‘A GROUP OF CULTURALLY INDIGINOUS PEOPLES INHABITING IN THE ARCTIC REGIONS OF GREENLAND, CANADA AND ALASKA’

initial research

developed research

After researching into the inuit, I discovered a fond interest in the beliefs that they hold. the idea that every being has a spirit and these are passed on when that being dies, therefore they have to be appeased through rituals in order to maintain a good hunt and peaceful life.

The art is made out of natural materials hunted by the peoples like wood and stone therefore i decided to look into the natural patterns that are created by the trees in our modern society for fabric and print inspiration.

art and religion

The Goddess of the Sea, Sedna, is worshipped throughout the community and is the controller of all sea creatures. The illustrations of her took my eye, and I decided to develop my own illustration in a similar style with my own models for the face.

‘Sedna sank to the bottom of the ocean and there became a powerful spirit. her home is now on the ocean flo r. If you have seen here you know she has the head and torso of a woman and the tailof a fish.’ polarlife.ca

I took inspiration from the tail of Sedna, using the textures to collect metallic looking and sheer fabric samples. Also, the patterns from the photography of the trees gave me inspiration to create some thick textures by moulding plastic through burning, and ripping holes into mesh fabric to create rough shapes.

The prints also took inspiration from the Goddess of the Sea, with the use of aquatic creatures and a blue colour scheme. In addition, the natural textures of the trees gave me ideas to create organic prints by freely ripping up paper and layering, as well as bleaching some material for a more natural look.
