exploring lagom living
The inital trend development began by creating mind maps, various mood boards of routes to take and drawing from secondary research imagery. By doing this it led me to develop what would be my three final trends.
The initial starting point of my research was ‘minimalism’. This led me to the development of ‘Lagom’ the Swedish term of not too little, not too much, just right. I then explored the Swedish way of living and this inspired my final three trends:
pre fab
proxemist
collective
Above are the final mood boards that represent the three chosen trends.
Pre fab: based on the textures of everyday life and how the contrast in materials are something more than simple architecture. Proxemist: this trend embodies the personal in personal space and celebrates the little things we leave behind that make us unique. Collective: Centered around the idea of communal living and the joining together of each and every individual that makes up a community. Interlinked & intertwined to create something new.

The initial stages of research for Pre Fab was about exploring craftsmanship and the hands on making of a home. This lead to photographing Community in a Cube . It was after taking these images that contrast in materials stood out to be one of the key factors that would lead my development of the Pre Fab trend. However, what was clear was that these textural differences were only prominent and noticeable when one is lookng and searching for the contrast in textures that come together to create something so everyday .

Upon developing the narrative for the trend from those Community in a Cube images this then moved on to actually photographing different textures, lines and materials that form everything from buildings and architecture to flooring
The images above are the key influences in t line up and the designs. Experimentation thr in the design process, as well as the placemen contrasting texture is something that is vital in th

what makes our we leave behind
The trend ‘Proxemist’ is based upon the idea of personal space and what it means to us, and the people around us. This idea was explored through sketching and representing closeness. Something that stood out as a representation to convey the trend was drawn and stitched lines (continuous and spaced).
This route lead to the investigation of what makes us, us. And how our personality is conveyed through collections of objects and how these can influence design and illustration. This exploration into what makes us unique inspired the thought of what –in everyday life- does everyone have or do, but what do we do to make it our own. What marks do we leave behind?
This idea of what marks do we leave behind really resonated and fit in perfect with the concept of the trend. This shows the development of how I portrayed this through photography, print and illustration. Each coffee stain is unique, each bite is unique- we have left those behind, however they are still personal.

Above is the developemnt for the typeface to use within the ‘Proxemist’ publicationI wanted to go for a hand written style without being curved and too stylised. I feel the text that is joined up flows better and suite the wording perfectly.

the notions of of communities
This trend- Collective is based on the notion of the sense of belonging felt when living and being part of a community. Inspired by the concept of Swedish cohousing. This trend is intentionally contrasting against the previous two, showing a light-hearted optimistic look at this way of life. The essence of ‘Collective’ is to join together and intertwine textures and fabrics to create a new being.
The interlinking theme that runs throughout ‘Collective’ stemmed from these images of the chainthis inspired the development of the overlapping almost spiral style experimentation. Moving onto the layering of fingerprints, symbolising individuality yet an intertwining sense of belonging with a common interest and investment in something new and uplifting
With a nod back to the Swedish Urbana way of living, the physical object, which linked each member of the community, was the staircase running centrally through the homes.

urbana collective collective u rbana Unlike the ‘proxemist’ trend, ‘collective’ is about linking together and flowing as one This is why the typeface must be something smooth and curved with a handrendered feel. Some of the fonts fit this but looked too simple. The fonts which work best for the trend are the bolder thicker style.
