Thierry Guetta, aka Mr. Brainwash - colui che molti pensano essere Banksy in seguito al successo del documentario “Exit through the gift shop” candidato agli Oscar nel 2011 -, è un fiume in piena. Di una rara, autentica e vibrante energia che esprime a suon di sorrisi e tramite un’iconica poetica dei buoni sentimenti che non teme i superlativi assoluti.

Una di quelle persone “normali” - come più volte ci tiene a precisarmi con enfasi - in grado di trasmettere una potente quiete, la stessa che dice di percepire per le strade di Verona, alle cui porte realizza una delle sue prime opere europee: la facciata del Muraless Art HoteI. Il nostro incontro avviene proprio all’interno di questa struttura ricettiva che si presenta come un museo vivente di arte urbana grazie alle sue 94 stanze tematiche firmate da cinquanta street artist di fama internazionale. Ha appena concluso una visita della città ed è entusiasta.

Ti è piaciuta?

Decisamente! È la prima volta che vengo a Verona in tutta la mia vita ed è un grande onore per me essere qui. Conosco la storia di Romeo e Giulietta ma non avevo idea di dove fosse ambientata, così ho fatto un piccolo tour e mi è parso davvero incredibile. Non è neppure immaginabile che qualcosa del genere possa esistere. Tutto così tranquillo e piacevole che viene voglia di passarci più tempo. In realtà l’Italia intera mi trasmette questa sensazione, ci sono così tanti posti che non si conoscono nemmeno ma che avranno sicuramente qualcosa di bellissimo da offrire.

Thierry Guetta, aka Mr. Brainwash – tho one who many believe to be Banksy, after the success of the documentary “Exit through the gift shop”, Oscars candidate in 2011- is like a river in flood. Of a rare, authentic and vibrant energy that expresses, through smiles and an iconic poetic, good feelings that don’t fear the superlatives absolute.

One of those “normal” people - as he often points out to me with emphasis - able to convey a powerful tranquillity, the same that he says he perceives in the streets of Verona, at whose doors he realized one of his first European works: the facade of the Muraless Art Hotel. Our meeting takes place right inside this accommodation facility, that presents itself as a living museum of urban art thanks to its 94 thematic rooms, signed by fifty internationally renowned street artists. He has just finished visiting the city and he is thrilled.

Did you like it?

Definitely! It is the first time I have come to Verona in my life, and it is a great honor for me to be here. I know the story of Romeo and Juliet but I had no idea where it was set, so I did a little tour and it felt really amazing. It’s not even imaginable that something like this exists. All so quiet and pleasant, that you want to spend more time in here. Actually, Italy in general gives me this feeling. There are so many places that you don’t even know but that will certainly have something beautiful to offer you.

Come il muraless art hotel…potremmo reputarlo una vera e propria opera site specific?

Sì assolutamente e riunire così tanti artisti diversi ma tutti accomunati da un “unico amore” è già di per sé una grande opera d’arte. È questo il vero potere dell’arte, la connessione tra le persone, che diventa anche collaborazione. Quando ho saputo che sarebbero stati coinvolti circa 50 artisti italiani che avrebbero lavorato assieme per realizzare le stanze dell’hotel, ho pensato subito che fosse un’idea meravigliosa ed è proprio per questo che ho accettato di prenderne parte. Anche se tutti loro sono dentro e io, l’unico straniero, sono all’esterno. Mi hanno lasciato fuori! (ride). Ad ogni modo, mi piace essere coinvolto in progetti in cui le persone fanno quello che amano, portando la propria diversità in un lavoro collettivo, aiutandosi reciprocamente per rendere il mondo migliore. È un concetto grandioso!

La street art è un linguaggio universale che non conosce confini geografici, ma da los angeles, dove vivi e lavori da tempo, alla campagna di verona c’è una notevole differenza. Hai dovuto adattare la tua arte ad un contesto così diverso?

No, ho seguito il mio istinto. Non si può mai sapere dove e cosa succederà. Dopo l’incontro con l’Art Advisor del progetto, Luigi Leardini, ho semplicemente pensato di realizzare qualcosa con il cuore, aprendolo per questo progetto e spero che questo venga percepito. In generale, cerco di fare tutto quello che posso per dare e trasmettere energia agli altri. Anche senza sapere di preciso come e perché, ma solo canalizzando questa forza attraverso l’arte. Venire qua di persona e vedere il risultato finale, scoprire cioè come questa energia si sia riversata sui muri, è incredibile, non trovi? L’arte è amore e libertà d’espressione ed è qualcosa di bellissimo. Proprio come è bellissima Verona.

Certo che no, anche Verona is beautiful. In realtà la bellezza è ovunque! Perché alla fine, la vita in sè è bellissima.

As the muraless art hotel… could we consider it a real sitespecific work of art?

Yes, absolutely. And bringing together so many different artists, but all united by “one love”, is already a great work of art itself. This is the true power of art, the connection between people, which also becomes collaboration. When I heard that about 50 Italian artists would be involved to work together to create the hotel rooms, I immediately thought it was a wonderful idea, and that’s why I agreed to be a part of it. Even though all of them are inside and I, the only stranger, am outside. They left me out! (laughs). Anyway, I like being involved in projects where people do what they love to do, bringing their diversity into a collective work, helping each other to make the world a better place. It’s a great concept!

Street art is an universal language that doesn’t know geographical boundaries. But from los angeles, where you live and work, to the countryside of verona there’s a big difference. Did you have to adapt your art to a context that is so different? No, I followed my instincts. You never know where and what will happen. After meeting with the Art Advisor of the project, Luigi Leardini, I simply thought of making something with my own heart, opening it for this project, and I hope that this will be perceived. In general, I try to do everything I can to give and transmit energy to other people. Even without knowing exactly how and why, but only channeling this force through art. Coming here in person and seeing the end result, finding out how this energy poured on the walls, it’s incredible, isn’t it? Art is love and freedom of expression, and it is something beautiful. Just like Verona.

SO, NOT ONLY “MILAN IS BEAUTIFUL”?

(first italian solo show, organized in 2019) Of course not, Verona is also beautiful. Being honest, beauty is everywhere! Because in the end, life itself is beautiful.

A proposito di “life is beautiful”, i buoni sentimenti sono il leitmotiv della tua arte…

Non si tratta solo di arte, è uno stile di vita. Focalizzandoci sull’amore e sulla positività non possiamo di certo sbagliare. Per me ogni nuovo giorno è come una nuova vita che inizia, ed è proprio questo che lo rende bellissimo. Anche dietro le cose negative si nasconde un lato positivo ed è quello che mi sforzo sempre di fare, guardare oltre per trovare il buono in ogni situazione. Sono un grande sognatore e faccio accadere nella mia mente tutto quello che desidero, ma più il tempo passa più mi rendo conto che tutti i miei sogni diventano reali per davvero. Dobbiamo continuare a sognare perché ciò che desideriamo può diventare realtà ed è proprio quello che sta succedendo a me! Bisogna crederci sul serio, perché tutto è possibile.

Quindi è un “lavaggio del cervello” in chiave positiva quello che vuoi proporci? In che modo il tuo pseudonimo si lega alle tue opere?

C’è stata un’epoca in cui l’arte era troppo seria e in quel momento poteva andare bene così, ma sento che ora le persone, i bambini, tutti quanti, necessitano di messaggi positivi. Di andare avanti e sapere che andrà tutto bene, di percepire buone vibrazioni proprio come quelle che trasmettono i colori o frasi quali “Never Give Up”, “Love Is The Answer”, “Life Is Beautiful”, “Follow Your Dreams”. Non mi reputo un filosofo dell’arte, sono una persona normale, faccio semplicemente quello che amo e amo quello che faccio. Ma voglio essere il vostro brainwash. Qualunque cosa possa “lavarvi il cervello” io la farò.

Messaggi, o meglio, icone, che ricorrono anche sulla facciata di questo hotel…

Sì, perché sono parte della mia arte. Che caratterizzino la facciata di un hotel, i muri per la strada o altri luoghi non fa differenza. Sono soggetti noti a tutti voi, in tutto il mondo, iconici e rappresentativi di quello che faccio.

E se altri volessero “sporcarla”? Potremmo pensarla come un’opera “aperta”?

Non sono geloso del mio lavoro. L’opera è all’esterno, le persone possono fare quello che vogliono. Se qualcuno volesse disegnarci sopra qualcosa di intelligente, potrei trovarlo bello. D’altronde è una metafora di vita: le cose cambiano di continuo, a volte anche in meglio.

Street art fuori, uno stile piu’ luxury dentro: non è una contraddizione?

No, alla fine sempre di arte si tratta. C’è arte fuori e arte dentro, arte sul soffitto, arte sui muri, arte persino sul pavimento. È arte, punto. Non ci deve interessare dov’è o in quale veste si presenta. L’arte è arte, non possiamo inscatolarla. È libertà e la libertà può trovarsi ovunque. In un museo, nella casa di qualcuno, nella metro, in un bus, per strada. Non potremo mai dire che dovrebbe stare in un posto piuttosto che in un altro, o in che modo dovrebbe starci. L’arte, in tutte le sue forme, non conosce regole.

Speaking of “life is beautiful,” good feelings are the leitmotif of your art...

It’s not just about art, it’s more like a lifestyle. By focusing on love and positivity, we can’t go wrong. For me every new day is like a new life starting, and that’s what makes it beautiful. Even behind negative things hides a positive side, and that’s what I always aim to do, look beyond to find the good in every situation.

I am a great dreamer, and I make everything I want happen in my mind. But the more time passes, the more I realize that all my dreams become real. We have to keep dreaming, because what we desire can come true and that’s what is happening to me! You have to believe it, because anything is possible.

So, is it a “brain wash”, in a positive key, that you want to offer us?

There was a time when art was too serious, and at that time it could work, but I feel that now people, children, everyone, need positive messages to go on and know that everything will be fine, to perceive good vibrations, just like those that transmit colors or phrases such as “Never Give Up”, “Love Is The Answer”, “Life Is Beautiful”, “Follow Your Dreams”. I don’t consider myself an art philosopher, I’m a normal person, I just do what I love and I love what I’m doing. But I want to be your Brainwash. Anything that can “wash your brains”, I will do.

Messages, or rather, icons, that recur even on the facade of this hotel...

Yes, because they are part of my art. Whether they characterize the facade of a hotel, the walls on the street or other places, it makes no difference. They are subjects known to all of you, all over the world, iconic and representative of what I do.

And if others wanted to “dirty it”? Could we think of it as an “open” work?

I’m not jealous of my work. The piece is on the outside, and people can do whatever they want. If someone wanted to draw something clever on it, I might even find it beautiful. On the other hand, it is a metaphor for life: things are constantly changing, sometimes for the better.

Street art outside, a more luxury style inside: isn’t it a contradiction?

No, at the end of the day it’s always art we are talking abbout. There’s art outside and art inside, art on the ceiling, art on the walls, art even on the floors. It’s art, period. Art is art, we can’t box it. It’s freedom, and freedom can be anywhere: in a museum, in someone’s house, in the subway, in a bus, on the street. We can never say that it should be in one place rather than another, or how it should be there. Art, in all its forms, knows no rules.

Tanto da evolversi in continuazione…per la tua street art, ad esempio, quale futuro intravedi?

La strada è il naturale percorso di questa corrente artistica. È aperta a tutti ed è questo il suo bello. Non c’è una galleria o qualcuno che dovrà approvare quello che fai ogni volta che ti svegli, puoi fare quello che vuoi. Ma per quanto mi riguarda, la mia arte evolve, appunto, e va ovunque. Ho aperto un museo a Los Angeles, precisamente a Beverly Hills. Sono uno dei primi artisti ad aprirne uno proprio. Non voglio più essere soltanto e necessariamente “sulla strada” ma anche in altri luoghi. La “street”, comunque, rimarrà sempre una parte del mio amore.

Con il mercato dell’arte che rapporto hai?

Non mi interessa. È vero, esiste un mercato come esiste un business, ma non mi importa. Nel corso degli anni ho raccolto molti fondi, milioni di dollari, che sono serviti per aiutare circa cinquanta o sessanta associazioni. Ciò che trovo veramente importante è continuare a fare quello che amo e raccogliere altrettanto per aiutare ancora. È la motivazione che mi fa alzare la mattina, quella che mi fa proseguire. Non intendo smettere di crescere, proprio perché più aiuto e più vorrei aiutare. Non mi fermerò mai.

C’è un’opera a cui sei particolarmente affezionato? Quella che non ho ancora realizzato. È senza dubbio la mia preferita. In generale, non mi sento affezionato a qualche opera in particolare, penso che facciano tutte parte del puzzle della mia vita. Probabilmente se mi rifacessi questa domanda in futuro, all’età di 95 anni, potrei essere in grado di risponderti ma per il momento penso ai miei lavori come un genitore pensa ai propri figli: li amo tutti.

Da obama al papa, che peraltro consideri un tuo grande amico, cosa ti piace o trovi d’ispirazione in questi personaggi? Che sono persone normali. Persone che riescono a vederti dentro, capire chi sei veramente. Persone con cui si instaura immediatamente un contatto visivo, una sintonia. Proprio come è accaduto con il Papa già durante il nostro primo incontro. In quella occasione gli consegnai una scultura “Life is beautiful” tenendo in mano una bomboletta spray con su scritto “Pope” e scattai una foto: c’era l’arte e c’era il Papa…insomma una vera Pope Art! Prima di incontrarlo per la seconda volta, dissi che a quel punto avrei voluto dipingere assieme a lui. Mi hanno tutti chiesto se fossi matto, ma nella vita non otterrai mai nulla se non chiedi, e infatti il Papa accettò. Comprammo tutto l’occorrente ma alla fine lui preferì dipingere direttamente sul retro della mia giacca, fece una sorta di croce antica. La terza volta mi sono presentato con un plexiglass e gli ho chiesto se potesse disegnarmi un corazón. Gli ho dato il pennello ed è stato divertente, mi ha stupito perché di solito quando realizzo un cuore lo faccio in due tratti distinti, mentre lui partendo da un lato lo ha disegnato in un unico tratto. In un colpo solo ha fatto uno splendido Pope-heart! Ma negli anni mi è capitato di collaborare con tantissime personalità, da Madonna al Dalai Lama, da Jay-Z a Rihanna, arrivando ad un punto in cui ho compreso che sono semplicemente persone, proprio come tutti noi. Mi sono anche chiesto come abbia fatto ad incontrare così tanti personaggi e coinvolgere così tanta gente con il mio lavoro. Credo che la spiegazione stia nel fatto che rimango sempre me stesso.

E banksy, cosa rappresenta per te?

Chi? Chi? Cosa?

BANKSY…

La banca? Ah, la banca, sì. La banca applaude!

Ma non so chi sia. Francesco lo sa, devi chiedere al Papa. Lui lo conosce.

So Much That It’s Constantly Evolving... For Your Street Art, For Example, What Future Do You See?

The road is the natural path of this artistic current. It is open to everyone, and this is its beauty. There is no gallery or someone who will have to approve what you do every time you wake up. You can do whatever you want. But as for me, my art evolves, and goes everywhere. I opened a museum in Los Angeles, precisely in Beverly Hills. I am one of the first artists to open one of their own. I don’t want to be alone and necessarily “on the streets” anymore, but also in other places. The “street”, however, will always remain a part of my essence.

What is your relationship with the art market?

I don’t care. Truth is that there is a market, as there is a business, but I don’t care. Over the years, I have raised many funds, millions of dollars, which have served to help about fifty or sixty associations. What I really find important, is to keep doing what I love and collect as much to help again. It’s the motivation that wakes me up in the morning, that keeps me going. I’m not going to stop growing, because more I help the more I want to keep doing it. I’ll never stop. I don’t care.

Is there a work you are particularly fond of?

The one I haven’t realized yet. It’s definitely my favorite. In general, I don’t feel attached to any particular work, I think they are all part of the puzzle of my life. Probably if you ask me this question in the future, at the age of 95, I might be able to answer you, but for now I think about my jobs as a parent thinks about their children: I love them all.

From obama to the pope, who, moreover, you consider a great friend of yours, what do you like or do you find inspiration in these characters?

That they are normal people. People who can see inside you, understand who you really are. People with whom you can immediately establish a visual contact, a harmony. Just as it happened with the Pope already during our first encounter. On that occasion, I gave him a sculpture “Life is beautiful”, holding a spray can with “Pope” wrote on it, and I took a photo: there was art and there was the Pope... In short, a real Pope Art! Before meeting him for the second time, I said that at that point I wanted to paint with him. They all asked me if I was insane, but in life you will never get anything if you do not ask, and in fact the Pope accepted. We bought everything we needed, but in the end he preferred to paint directly on the back of my jacket, making a kind of ancient cross. The third time, I showed up with a plexiglass and asked him if he could draw me a corazón. I gave him the brush and it was fun. It amazed me, because usually, when I make a heart, I do it in two distinct strokes, while he drew it starting from one side in only one stroke. In one fell swoop, he made a gorgeous Pope-heart!

But, over the years I’ve been collaborating with a lot of people, from Madonna to the Dalai Lama, from Jay-Z to Rihanna, getting to a point where I realized that they’re just normal people, just like all of us.

I also wondered how did I magaged to meet so many characters and involve so many people with my work. I guess the reason is that I’m still myself.

And banksy, what does he mean to you? What did you say? Who? What?

BANKSY...

The bank? Ah, the bank, yes. The bank applauds! But I don’t know who he is. Francis knows, you have to ask the Pope. He’s the one who knows him.

Attraverso 94 stanze tematiche Muraless Art Hotel celebra il genio e l’eccellenza italiana in ogni settore: vino, opera lirica, cinema, motori, arte, architettura, design, storia, scienza, cibo, moda e musica. Una nuova struttura ricettiva nata nel circondario di Verona dal sogno di Gianmaria Villa di ridare vita all’ex Hotel Cristallo. Un intervento che ha avviato una radicale riqualificazione nel segno del linguaggio e dei caratteri espressivi dell’Arte, per esaltare l’eccellenza italiana. Grazie all’amicizia con l’Art Advisor Luigi Leardini si è intrapreso un percorso che ha portato allo studio e allo sviluppo del nuovo concept hotel. Un viaggio tra strumenti e tecniche creative (dall’areosol art allo stencil, dal paste up alla pittura a mano libera), tra stili e forme espressive (dal lettering al modelling 3D, dalla grafica alla fotografia digitale, dal fumetto all’illustrazione), tra linguaggi e codici moderni (dal figurativo all’astratto, dall’iperrealismo fino all’anamorfosi). Protagonisti di questa genesi, sono writer di fama internazionale, chiamati a interpretare con il loro estro creativo, le eccellenze che il Bel Paese vanta nei settori più svariati. Con questo approccio l’hotel, il cui nome evidenzia l’assenza di confini nel linguaggio dell’arte, punta ad essere un quadro senza cornici, un contenitore leggero e trasparente e al contempo potente ed esplosivo del genio italiano a più livelli.
