Jaipur: Four personalities from Rajasthan have been selected from Rajasthan for Padma Shri awards. Ahmad Hussain and Mohammdd Hussain (Art), Moolchand Lodha (social work) and Laxman Singh (social work) have been selected for the award. A list of the names was released on the eve of Republic Day.

Today, on 26th January 1950 was the day when our beloved motherland- India became a sovereign state, three years after we gained independence. The day dawned sunny and clear on that memorable Thursday and a thread of excitement ran through the people and joyous citizens of Free India took out impromptu processions beating drums, conch shells and singing patriotic songs across the nation. Dr Rajendra Prasad, the First President of India also began his tenure on this filled with wonder at the amazing feats by our special forces, soak up the amazing military strength of India bolstered by it’s brave soldiers – do all this and more as India celebrates its independence fiercely and commits itself again and again to its freedom!

On January 26, 1950, the Preamble to the Constitution of India -- a statement presenting the key principles of the Constitution -- came into effect. This completed the country’s transition to a sovereign republic. The Constitution establishes fundamental rights that should be enjoyed by all citizens of this country, regardless of their political beliefs. It also establishes some fundamental duties for all citizens of the country to abide by.

On this memorable day on 1950 it was at 10:18 am that C. Rajagopalachari, the outgoing Governor-General of the Dominion of India declared our nation a SOVEREIGN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC and at 10:24 am the First President of Independent India, Dr Rajendra Prasad was sworn in by Chief Justice of India Shri Harilal Kania. 31 guns boomed as the National anthem was sung. Close your eyes and imagine this moment… awards also including Param Vir Chakra to Major Somnath Sharma and Lance Naik Karam Singh (both posthumously) for their bravery and sacrifice in the war with Pakistan in 1948.

Today, you will see for the first (and last) time the Indian Navy’s spy plane IL 38 flying over the Kartavya Path and also the Garud Special Forces of the IAF will be marching the first time. The Republic Day fly-past will comprise 45 Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft, one from the Indian Navy and four helicopters from the Indian Army.
