A bench of Justices BR Gavai and Sanjay Karol noted that these deaths had occurred within two months of their relocation from South Africa and Namibia to Kuno National Park.

The apex court told Center that it appears from the reports and articles of experts that the KNP is not adequate for such a large number of cheetahs and the Central govt may con- sider shifting them to other sanctuaries.

“Three deaths (of cheetahs) in less than two months is a matter of grave concern. There are expert opinions and articles in the media. It appears that kuno is not enough for so many cheetahs. The concentration of cheetahs at one place is very high. Why don’t you look for a suitable location in Rajasthan? Just because Rajasthan is ruled by an opposition party, doesn’t mean you won’t consider it.” —with PTI inputs
