Editor’s Letter If you can live anywhere in the world …. Why live in Mallorca? I am observing two sorts of decision makers in this regard: those who never leave their home town (dying species) and are convinced they have all they wish for and those who keep looking for the nonplus ultra, the dream you never reach. The latter will have to settle one day. I consider myself the third variety of habitat searchers as I have lived in many countries, each time as if I would stay there forever and yet in need to know that I can choose a new destination whenever I wish. With this open mind I have now completed 23 years in Mallorca and as time is the most precious asset in our lives, this shows how dear Mallorca has become to me. If years ago the cultural life in Mallorca was virtually hardly existing, times have changed. Although an island, Mallorca´s youth is curious, impatient to take it all in and multi-lingual, prepared to greet the millions of travellers and ex-patriots. rom Hollywood superstar to political activist, Richard Gere is not your typical actor. Recognised around the world for roles in many iconic films from Pretty Women to Internal Affairs and the box office smash Chicago he is not afraid of taking a political stance on topics both home in the US and abroad. Gere is also not afraid of taking gambles with his acting and career. Take a look over his movie credits and his very public support for various political and humanitarian causes and its obvious that he has not simply used his good looks and charisma to sell cinema foyer popcorn and earn studios huge box office receipts. Through the media of film and theatre and his sheer aesthetic allure, he has used the power of story telling to provoke debate about contentious issues and effect social change when dealing with issues such as homelessness. A well-known online encyclopaedia describes a movie star as being someone (also known as a film star and cinema star) who ‘is an actor who is famous for their starring, or leading, roles in motion pictures. The term is used for actors who are marketable stars and whose names are used to promote movies, for example in trailers and posters’. Well, Gere certainly fits all those criteria. His long, distinguished career is defined by box office hits, taking risks on independent films and occasionally dipping into unfamiliar territory, such as musicals as seen in his roles on stage in Grease and on screen in Chicago. Today he is well known as an activist and humanitarian, but remains busy acting although in independent films rather than the Hollywood blockbusters of his early career. He is known for bringing a method-style intensity to his work, often preparing for months to fulfil a role. He might, for example, spend times in homeless shelters and begging on the street of New York or spend in Rajasthan, India for his performance in the lighthearted comedy The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Gere will be 70 years of age in 2019 and is blessed with fit, healthy, trim look that years of quiet time provided through his adherence to Buddhism and his vegetarian diet have given him. There is no sign of him slowing down his acting career. His trademark sweeping mop of black hair is now white, alongside his almond-shaped eyes and rimless glasses ensures he cuts a distinguished, thoughtful figure amidst the more brash, blockbuster offerings and actors that emanate from Hollywood. Softly spoken, he has somewhat of a reputation of playing sophisticated, confident archetypes, excelling in moves such as the musical Chicago or Primal Fear. Watch one of his early movies, say film critics, and you’ll begin to see him enjoy his intoxicating relationship with the camera evolve. In the Richard Brooks’ Looking For Mr Goodbar (1977) movie, Gere demonstrates such an electrifying screen presence as co-star Diane Keaton’s charismatic but abusive lover that audiences find it difficult to take their eyes of him. He’s a restless, prowling figure full of pent up energy, and Gere has commented in the past that it was his best performance in an illustrious career. Born in 1949, Gere began appearing in films in the 1970s, playing a supporting role in Looking for Mr. Goodbar and a starring role in Days of Heaven (1978). He came to international public notice with a leading role in the film American Gigolo

(1980), shifting him up the career adder to leading man and a sex symbol. He quickly went on to star in many well-received films, including An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), The Cotton Club (1984), Pretty Woman (1990), Primal Fear (1996), Runaway Bride (1999), Arbitrage (2012) and most recently Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer and The Dinner. The two latter films were released independently and involved Gere playing the titular antihero in Sony Pictures Classics’ Norman and as a congressman preparing for the impact of being involved in a scandal in The Dinner.

INDEPENDENT MOVIE MAKERS ARE NOW CALLING UPON RICHARD GERE’S LIFETIME OF ACTING EXPERIENCE TO CREATE MEMORABLE PERFORMANCES Richard was chosen by the influential and hugely popular People magazine in the US as one of the 50 Most Beautiful People in the World in 1991. The celebrity magazine then named him as their Sexiest Man Alive in 1999 bringing a successful decade to a close for Richard. But it was the acting work that he did over the two decades between 1982 and 2002 that have defined him in the public’s eye and cemented his name as one of the Hollywood greats. In 1982 the box-office smashing ‘An Officer and a Gentlemen’ announced this acting talent to a wider audience, while 20 years later he starred in the spectacular musical adaptation of the Broadway musical ‘Chicago’. Surprisingly, with a long list of successful films made throughout a long career, he has never been nominated for an Oscar award. He has though been a familiar sight on the red carpet from Hollywood to Cannes and many European film festivals and awards - most surprisingly perhaps, not even for 2002’s Chicago, for which he was awarded a Golden Globe. For portraying Billy Flynn in the Academy Award-winning musical Chicago (2002), he won a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of the cast. His portrayal of Flynn, a duplicitous, smooth-talking lawyer who turns his clients into celebrities to gain them public support won him many new fans. Directors and casting agents began offering him roles where his could make to most of well written scripts, using his natural acting gifts and talent for playing roles of men on the margins of society, often not fully part of the lives of people around him but rather looking in from the sidelines. Perhaps he is known best for the onscreen chemistry he shared with Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman’ and then in the box office smash hit sequel, Runaway Bride. Indeed, such is the strength of his feelings towards Tibet that he was banned from appearing in world’s most prestigious awards, the Oscars after an appearance on stage in 1993,

In 1994 Gere visited London to open Harrods’ sale, donating his £50,000 appearance fee to Survival. He also supports the charity’s fundraising advertising campaigns. Early in 2017, Gere gave a much publicised interview (Hollywood-based Variety Magazine) in which he mused on the fact that a lack of work offers from studios for big box office movies was in due to pressure from China, now the second largest movie grossing country in the world and a significant

funder of US-made films. While he rues not being contacted by the Hollywood establishment, he is carving out a critically successful career in independent movies such as Norman, Time Out of Mind and The Dinner. Throughout his career Gere has been linked romantically with beautiful, glamorous women, keeping his name in the gossip columns and celebrity magazine for decades. Married to supermodel Cindy Crawford for four years from 1991 to 1995. In November 2002, he married model and actress Carey Lowell. They have a son, born when Gere was 53 years of age, named Homer James Jigme Gere. Homer was born in February 2000

GERE’S WORK ETHIC HAS KEPT HIM IN DEMAND FROM DIRECTORS AND BUSY ON BOTH STAGE AND SCREEN and is named after both parents fathers, as well as holding the Tibetan name Jigme, which roughly translates as Fearless! After graduating from high school, he won gymnastics scholarship to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where he studied philosophy. Although he did not complete the course, dropping out after two years, his interest and study of philosophy stayed with him throughout his life, not least in his interest in Tibetan culture, meditation and Buddhism. An accomplished piano-player and guitarist, who also writes songs in his spare time, Gere’s primary focus has always been music, he says. Raised on a farm in Syracuse, in upstate New York, he first satisfied his creative urges by writing music for high-school productions. The second of five children, he credits his Methodist parents, Homer, an insurance salesman, and Doris, a housewife, for fostering in him a passion for acting. Learning his acting craft on the theatre stage in New York and London, Gere returned to London in 2016 to take on the role of a homeless man named George Hammond in a play named Time out of Mind. Critics described his performance and one played with compelling intensity. Gere is a long time supporter of homeless charities, particularly in his adopted city of New York and often spends time in homeless shelters, or lobbying city and national politicians, pressing the case for better services for homeless families and adults. His first major role was a lead in the original London stage production of the musical Grease in 1973. He played Danny Zuko - the role John Travolta made his own in the film version of 1978 - in a London production at the New London Theatre and then in a Shakespeare production of Taming of the Shrew at the Young Vic theatre. Gere was already making a name himself as a young stage actor of some ability at Provincetown Playhouse, Seattle Repertory Theatre and on Broadway, New York. While Hollywood might not be knocking on his door so frequently now, Gere continues to evolve as an actor in a stream of critically acclaimed independent movies and his work in humanitarian issues has come to define his life, the biggest role of his career.

He won a GOLDEN GLOB for his portrayal of hardboiled lawyer Billy Flynn in the smash hit musical CHICAGO. In 2007 the jury at the SAN SEBASTIAN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL presented him with a LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD. He is a PERSONAL FRIEND of Tibet’s spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. based engineer, car designer and winning racing driver who set up his eponymous car company Shelby American Inc in 1962. US-born race car champion Shelby was such a pioneer. Before turning to car designing and manufacturing Shelby had

already carved an international reputation as a racing driver, including a victory in the Le Mans 24-hour race of 1959. Working through the golden age of the American automobile from the late 1950s and though into the early 197os, Shelbyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s streamlined sports car, epitomised by the models 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 Super Snake, represented the aspirations of millions of people seeking the American Dream. In 1962 he introduced the Shelby Cobra, then the worldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fastest production car and later delivered the iconic Mustang GT for the Ford Motor Company, the car that continues to define the hopes and dreams of 1960s America. He focussed on creating, beautiful, sporty, performance sports cars that are immediately identified as possessing American heritage. Ultimately, the philosophy behind his Shelby Cobras was to fit a powerful engine into relatively small, lightweight body and push road performance to the limit. The range was produced as both street and race car versions, with numerous variations developed including a range of around 50 specially adapted 1967 AC Cobra 427s, which were originally designed for track racing but with some technical adjustments become road legal. AC Cobra, a British-based sports car maker, supplied the classic aluminium roadster bodies to Shelby who then squeezed in a throbbing Ford V8 engine under the bonnet. The Anglo-British car, sold as the Shelby Cobra in the US, was manufactured between 1962 and 1967. For many car aficionados the 1967 Shelby Cobra 427 design is the epitome

However, despite critical success and victories on the racetrack, the Shelby Cobra company was not a commercial success and production halted in 1967, although the marque is now sporadically revisited with new models. Unveiled to an admiring public in 1962, and updated throughout the years, the legendary Shelby Cobras are a timeless design classic. The cars are regularly named in lists showing the top ten cars of all time, for example those listing the top ten sports cars of the 1960s and 70s. Indeed, a 1967 Shelby Cobra took a starring role in the 1960s comedy movie The Gumball Rally in which actor Michael Sarrazin

Shelby’s brilliant idea was to take a light weight European sports car body and chassis, pack it with a powerful Ford V8 engine and race touring car classes across North America and Europe. drove the car to victory, beating a Ferrari Daytona in a chaotic road race from New York to Los Angeles. For many people, the Shelby Cobra is linked closely with Hollywood movie legend Steve McQueen and star of petrolhead films including Bullitt (1968) and Le Mans (1971). Although he never actually owned a model, the marquee remains closely associated with the actor. In 2016, international auction house RM Sotheby’s set a world record for the most expensive American car ever sold at auction. Going under the hammer for £11.3m, the 1962 Shelby 260 Cobra was owned by Shelby himself before he passed away in 2012. Original AC Shelby Cobra 427s are a car

collectors dream, and when auctioned generally fetch in excess of $1million. With leather interiors and door panel and wood steering wheels the model is popular among amateur car enthusiasts who can now buy kits to recreate the sensuous, lithe lines of this classic car. The car has also inspired manufacturers to imitate the look, performance and design of the 427. In the late 1960s, the giant US-based luxury car builder Chrysler drew inspiration from the 427 to imagine and create the Viper, a longrunning success for the company. Now marketed under Chrysler’s Dodge brand and designed with the Viper still owes much of it look and inspiration to the 427, developed over 20 years previously.

Such is the enduring legacy of this design and the spirit of speed and adventure it conjures up, that toy maker LEGO is considering launching a model of the car, at 1:14 scale. A decision on whether LEGO goes into production with this concept will be made in 2018. An innovative engineer Carroll Shelby created a car in the Cobra and particularly in the 1967, 427-edition, that sets that heart racing of any car enthusiast. Rarely coming up for auction, the models built between 1962 and 1967 continue to set pulses racing, attracting record prices under the auctioneer’s hammer. More than 50 years later, Carroll Shelby atomotive vision and design genius continues to win admiring glances.

Play areas allow visitors to bounce on trampolines strung high in the treetops, swing in hammocks or get lost in a maze-like sculpture trail. Finally, visitors can stand in a cube-shaped fountain with water flowing down its four sides.Dror wants visitors to write their own experience, by enjoying pathways, like calligraphy, weaving through the existing woodland, surprising people with unexpected discoveries along their journey. The design team’s light touch concept on the landscape preserves the lush forest, leaving every tree in place.

PEACOCK CHAIR Designed for Italian furniture brand Cappellini, the Peacock Chair is constructed of crumpled sheets of felt, made without sewing or upholstery. The intricate folding paired with an innovative method of structure creates a luxurious chair that is both elegant and modern.

Studio Dror created a concept designed an artificial island near Istanbul, Turkey using one billion cubic metres of soil excavated from a proposed construction of a new canal connecting the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara. HavvAda would offer homes and workspaces for 300,000 people spread over six hills supported by geodesic domes where neighbourhoods and businesses intermingle with parks and valleys.

PLUS MINUS CABINET With its +/- Cabinet, Studio Dror reimagined the humble bathroom cabinet with Italian kitchen and bathroom manufacturer Boffi. The award winning cabinet consists of a horizontal storage space that minimizes mess. To open, rotate the mirrored door 90 degrees, forming a crossshaped cabinet allowing easy access to the objects inside.

VOLUME MGX Working with innovative Belgian 3D printer Materialise, Studio Dror designed a beautiful, collapsible table lamp that stretches open to fit over a light bulb, which illuminates the fixtureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s intricate shape, giving subtle glow at the lampâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s centre that fades as it reaches toward the edges.

Leszek Bujnowski is an illusionist. No, wait, he is much more, he is a photographic illusionist. Even more: he is the photographer that returns to his roots, not the roots of photography, unleashed forever from the daguerreotype process and the wait. He revisits the source of the art itself, the magic of an emotion that brings the watcher to tears because of its beauty. Photography plays with infancy, it brings it back; it provokes an intense feeling that is not found anywhere else; images that snatch breaths in the moment in which the eyes, our entire lives - the past and what we’ve lived, what we thought and dreamed, what we cried over and laughed at - pose on the art, art in capital letters, of this young Polish photographer. Fantasy,

illusion, memory, love, tenderness, surprise, smiles. Photographs that are closer to the style of illustrations: timid colours, slightly dimmed, that generate a powerful image. Images that create fantasies; an immense sweetness that intertwines, strings together and rivets these dreams. Leszek Bujnowski was born in 1977 in Poland. Since he was a kid his biggest passion has always been photography. Five years in the design and making, the fashion house Chanel’s first in-house designed men’s watch was released with great excitement to the collectors and enthusiasts. The Le Monsieur men’s wristwatch is a distinctive, highly stylised timepiece powered by a movement wholly developed by the company’s designers and specialists. Beneath a deceptively classic appearance, the Monsieur de Chanel watch is daringly innovative, making a distinctive impression of elegant engineering and design. The Monsieur model hosts an instant jumping hour, retrograde minute hand and a small second hand all powered by the Calibre 1 movement, and visible through a transparent case back. A technically advanced model, it is both a beautiful piece of jewellery and highly desirable timepiece. It is a watch to read the time, not simply to know the time. Aficionados and collectors from the watch and jewellery world were thrilled to hear that iconic fashion house Chanel was releasing a limited edition series of men’s watches, with movements manufactured by in-house craftsmen. The Monsieur de Chanel wristwatch was designed and developed over a five-year period by the company’s specialist Fine Watch making team, which ultimately produced a premier men’s timepiece; elegant and uncompromisingly masculine. The hours are displayed in Arabic numerals, with a nod to a digital font, within an octagonal window. This subtle design references architecture at the company’s spiritual home at the Place Vendôme, Paris and the bottle stopper of Chanel’s iconic No. 5 perfume. Designed in Paris and manufactured in La Chauxde-Fonds, the Monsieur watch openly displays its architectural, highly finished and almost entirely skeletonised movement through a transparent back case. The model nods to the fashion house founder Coco Chanel’s belief that ‘less is more’, giving it a strong visual profile and timeless appeal. Chanel Horology has put its name to watches with movements supplied by third party companies since 1987 when it launched the ‘Premiere’ watch,

and later its ceramic J12 model. Housed in an octagonal case, and similarly referencing the architecture of Place Vendôme, the company launched the ceramic J12 in 2000. Eight years later it worked with leading watchmaker Audermars Piguet on an updated version of the J12, and then with Swiss watchmakers Renaud et Papi. However, today, the Le Monsieur is the first made entirely by Chanel specialists, supported by highly regarded Swiss-based watchmaker Romain Gauthier, in whose company Chanel has a stake. An Haute Horlogerie watch, the first limited edition models of Le Monsieur were released in 2016 and featured beige gold bodies, ivory dial with jumping hour, retrograde minute indication at 240° and small second counter. The front glass, or crystal, is made of sapphire and is slightly domed offering the wearer subtle lighting effects. A transparent back case has been crafted to reveal the watch’s intricate mechanics of wheels, bridges and jewels. Using black matt and glossy textures, the movement is extremely architectural. The lion image signifies the movement’s status as having been built by Chanel’s in-house Haute Horlogerie team and is an iconic emblem for the company. Since the 2016 launch more models have been released, with a similar palette including a black dialled version with a platinum face and a blue platinum version. The 18k gold on the original Calibre 1 model gold is alloyed to create Chanel’s distinctive beige gold colour, a more subtle, understated look than yellow or rose, even when polished. It’s an understated signifier of luxury. These timepieces are all worthy of a place in a watch connoisseur’s collection, and we expect more innovative watch making from the house of Chanel.
