A “new normality”

have often wondered how to describe this new wave of homes with natural hues and balanced colours that blend with their surrounding environment. When the relationship between a garden and a home flows naturally, it is by no means an easy achievement and equally challenging to characterize. But when the desired balance is accomplished, one can be certain that the home in question will warm the hearts of all those it encounters. The more we integrate the environment into our home, the better it feels! In a recent interview with a great authority on fashion – Armani –he speaks of a “new normality”, a concept he defines as a global beauty, ageless and without make-up. I find this extremely interesting. Trends in fashion and art definitely and directly influence our personal expressions in our homes. More than any other place, it is our holiday homes that should beckon us to set new trends, live what we believe, in our very heart of hearts. Those of us with a particular love for design are privileged to see such worlds in their own right. These homes are the creations and reflections of special people who are brave enough, at a given point in time, to be the first to swim against the mainstream, constituting the beginning of new trends. What could no make-up mean for a property? I love this question and I shall leave it open for us to consider... it makes me think of age that frees us from convention. There comes a time when we no longer have to impress anyone and are free to create what our spirit allows us to imagine. Maybe the purest expression of what Armani means is reflected in a unique property we display on page 68. The face of Mallorcan real estate is changing quickly. There are many new thoughts and trends, many international brands respecting the very local simplicity of happiness. And was it not for this simplicity that we all set off for the Mediterranean in the first place?

A menudo me pregunto cómo se puede definir esta nueva tendencia de casas que adoptan los colores propios del medioambiente, incorporando el jardín dentro de la casa, mientras ésta, a la vez, fluye suavemente hacia el jardín. Un logro que llena al corazón de bienestar. Cuanto más integramos el medioambiente en casa, mejor nos sentimos. Hoy he leído una entrevista a ese gran icono de la moda, Armani, en la que habla de una “nueva normalidad”, un concepto que define como belleza global, atemporal y sin maquillaje. Considero esto muy interesante. Ciertamente, las tendencias en la moda y en el arte influyen en la visión de nuestra casa. Y es así que una casa vacacional, más que cualquier otro sitio, debería invitarnos a establecer nuevas tendencias, a vivir aquello que existe en lo más profundo de nuestro corazón. Para nosotros es un privilegio contemplar estos mundos, las creaciones y reflexiones de personas especiales que tienen el valor de ser los primeros en nadar a contracorriente, marcando nuevas tendencias. ¿Y qué podría significar “estar sin maquillaje” para una propiedad? Dejo esta pregunta abierta... Mi experiencia me dice que la edad nos libera de lo convencional. Llega un momento en que ya no tenemos la necesidad de impresionar a nadie, y nos sentimos libres para crear desde el espíritu. Tal vez la expresión más pura de lo que quiere decir el Sr. Armani se refleja en una propiedad como la de la página 68. La cara de las viviendas en Mallorca está cambiando, con nuevas ideas y tendencias, y marcas internacionales que respetan la felicidad sencilla tan propia de esta tierra. ¿O acaso no fue esta sencillez la que hizo que todos decidiéramos instalarnos en el Mediterráneo?

Eine Symbiose, die das Herz höher schlagen lässt. Je mehr wir die Umwelt in unser Zuhause integrieren, desto wohler fühlen wir uns! Heute habe ich ein Interview mit Herrn Armani gelesen, in dem der Modezar von einer neuen Normalität spricht, die er als globale, zeitlose Schönheit definiert, sozusagen ohne Make-up. Eine sehr interessante Interpretation! Mode- und Kunst beeinflussen unser Empfinden und unseren Sinn für Schönheit - auch in unseren eigenen 4 Wänden. Wie kein anderer Ort lädt eine Ferienimmobilie dazu ein neue Trends zu setzen, uns selbst so darzustellen wie wir tief in unseren Herzen fühlen. Es ist ein Privileg Zeuge dieses Zeitgeistes zu sein und auf Mallorca Einblick in diese individuellen Wohnwelten von speziellen Menschen zu erlangen. Die eigene Expression braucht immer auch Mut, um gegen den Strom zu schwimmen und so, noch unahnend, neue Trends zu setzen. Was bedeutet das Konzept „ohne Makeup“ für eine Immobilie? Wieder eine Frage und ich geniesse sie! Ich lasse sie hier offen... Aus Erfahrung weiß ich, dass uns das Alter zunehmend von Konventionen befreit. Es ist der Augenblick, an dem wir niemanden mehr beeindrucken müssen unseren Ideen freien Lauf zu lassen. Vielleicht ist der reinste Ausdruck dieser natürlichen, so harmonievollen Ungeschminktheit von Armani eine Immobilie, die wir Ihnen auf Seite 68 vorstellen. Der Immobilienmarkt auf Mallorca ist jetzt beschleunigt, legt eine unaufhaltsame Dynamik an den Tag. Internationale Investoren und Profesionelle und Marken unterschreiben die lokale Simplizität mit direktem Kurs aufs Glück und einen freien Kopf. ew destinations in the world can boast of a range of golf facilities like that of Mallorca, with a total of 24 courses to play on less than an hour’s drive away from each other. To start with, just 5 minutes from Palma are Son Vida, Son Muntaner and Son Quint, in the Arabella group, forming the largest golf resort in Spain and the second-largest in Europe. Ten minutes from the city, on the Manacor road, Son Gual is considered one of the best courses in the world by Golf World or the Rolex Guide. In the same area, other interesting courses are Son Antem, Golf Maioris and Golf Park Puntiró. There are six courses in the south-west of the island, in Calvià. Three in Santa Ponça, the Poniente which has views of the Tramuntana and was designed by the famous architect John Harris, and those of Andratx and Bendinat, which are highly prized by big international players. Golf de Son Termens, between Valldemossa and Bunyola, offers a demanding round. And this is where the most eagerly-awaited encounter of the golf industry will be taking place, the International Golf Travel Market, where representatives of all of the world’s tour operators will meet from 14th to 17th November. To the east, beside the beautiful tourist resort of Porto Colom, the Vall D´Or course regales evocative panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea. To the north, Pula, Canyamel, Capdepera, Son Servera, Pollença and Alcanada, a short distance away from one another, amaze with the beauty of the natural sites all along their courses.

These old houses, known in Mallorca as possessions, have been restored so that visitors who appreciate good taste and culture, as well as the pleasure of life, can enjoy the distinctive spectacle of the sunset over the Serra de Tramuntana mountains (a World Heritage Site), watching the sun rise over the plains in the heart of the island, or dreaming on the clifftops with the Mediterranean Sea at their feet. Die Zungenstoffe sind eines der Markenzeichen mallorquinischen Designs. Sie basieren auf der tausende Jahre alten Hindu-Technik Ikat.

he great Mallorcan stately homes, and even the humblest, have for centuries sported tablecloths, cushions, curtains, chairs and rocking chairs made from or upholstered with these fabrics that are so distinctive for their colours and elongated patterns, known as llengües (‘tongues’) or flámulas (‘flames’) because of their similarity to the flames of log fires. Recognised today as Mallorcan, the fact is that the technique for applying the dyes to the fabrics is derived from an ancient practice from India, known as Ikat. Designers like Gucci, Marc Jacobs or Balenciaga have included them in some of their collections, promoting their globalisation. But the procedure for dyeing them is still extremely traditional, as great care is needed to ensure nothing goes wrong. The fabric is dyed in stretches, depending on the desired pattern, normally on cloth made of cotton or linen. Blue is the predominant colour, but this does not mean they cannot also be found in other equally striking colours, such as red or green. And the patterns may vary, too, being thinner or thicker depending on the shape the artisan gives them. Nowadays there are very few workshops left in Mallorca that still produce these fabrics, and perhaps the most notable is Teixits Vicens, which continues to produce them with the utmost quality as it has done since 1854. As well as tablecloths and cushions, this design is now applied to the most varied range of products, including dresses, shoes, bags or crockery, among others, with renewed success.

Pero el procedimiento para teñirlas sigue siendo muy artesanal, pues requiere un cuidado grande para que nada falle. El tejido se va tiñendo por tramos, en función del dibujo que se desee obtener, normalmente en telas de algodón o de lino. El color predominante es el azul, pero no quita que se encuentre también en otros colores llamativos como el rojo y el verde. También los dibujos pueden variar, más finos o más gruesos, según la forma que les de el artesano. En la actualidad quedan muy pocos talleres en Mallorca que continúen con la producción, destacando entre ellos Teixits Vicens, que desde 1854 sigue confeccionando los tejidos con la máxima calidad. Aparte de mantelerías o cojines, hoy se aplica este diseño a los productos más variopintos, vestidos, zapatos, bolsos o vajillas, entre otros, con renovado éxito.

Die vorherrschende Farbe ist Blau, es gibt die Stoffe jedoch auch in kräftigem Rot oder Grün. Die Muster sind ebenfalls unterschiedlich, mal sind die Zungen schmaler, mal breiter gezeichnet, je nach Design, das der Handwerker abbilden will. Nur noch wenige Manufakturen auf Mallorca stellen die Stoffe her. Am bekanntesten ist Teixits Vicens , die seit 1854 erstklassige Stoffe anfertigt. Heute finden sich die Zungenstoffe nicht nur bei Tischwäsche und Kissen, sondern, sehr erfolgreich übrigens, ebenso im Design von Kleidung, Schuhen, Taschen und Geschirr.

The ‘Círculo Mallorquín’ Palma’s aristocracy founded this select society, a cultural and recreational oasis in the midst of Mallorca’s isolation, in the 19th century. El Círculo Mallorquín. La aristocracia palmesana fundó en el siglo XIX esta selecta sociedad, que fue un oasis cultural y de ocio en medio del aislamiento de Mallorca. Der Círculo Mallorquín. Im XIX Jahrhundert gründete die Palmesaner Aristokratie den elitären Zirkel, eine Oase der Kultur und Freizeitvergnügen in einer Zeit der Abgeschiedenheit Mallorcas.

he Círculo Mallorquín, or ‘Mallorcan Circle’, came into being on 25th August 1851 in Palma, in the context of a culturally impoverished society. The geographically isolated nature of Mallorca, which was even more pronounced in the mid-19th century, was no obstacle for the emergence, between 1840 and 1850, of new meeting places, salons and recreational spaces for members of Mallorca’s aristocracy, as was the case of the Casino Palmesano, the Casino Balear and the Liceo Mallorquín. The union of the latter two produced the Círculo Mallorquín, which was located in the palace in Calle Conquistador that is now the seat of the parliament of the Balearic Islands. Members paid a monthly fee to belong to the select Circle, money that was used to maintain the establishment and pay the expenses incurred by the cultural and recreational activities. For this purpose there was a library, games rooms, balls were held, theatre... And people talked politics there, too, and consulted the national and foreign press, played billiards or cards, and also listened to chamber music, danced or talked. Many famous parties were organised within the walls of the Círculo Mallorquín, like the great ball in honour of Queen Isabel II in 1860, or the reception for King Alfonso XII and Victoria Eugenia, in 1923. The arrival of the Spanish Republic in 1931 brought decadence to this society, and with the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, the situation got worse. The space was turned into the workshop of the Women’s Section of the Falange and the J.O.N.S. In spite of the will of its present-day members, the Mallorcan Circle has never again been what it was in its origins.

A pesar de la voluntad de sus socios actuales, el Círculo Mallorquín nunca ha vuelto a ser lo que fue en sus principios.

Ungeachtet der geographischen Abgeschiedenheit der Insel im XIX Jahrhundert entstanden zwischen 1840 und 1850 neue Treffpunkte, Gesprächskreise und Freizeitlokale für die Noblen Mallorcas, u.a. das Casino Palmesano, das Casino Balear und das Liceo Mallorquín. Durch die Vereinigung der beiden letztgenannten wurde der Círculo Mallorquín aus der Taufe gehoben, dessen Sitz sich im Palast der calle Conquistador befand. Heute beherbergt der Palast das balearische Parlament. Die Mitglieder des erlesenen Zirkels zahlten eine Monatsgebühr für die Erhaltung der Räumlichkeiten und die Veranstaltung kultureller und Freizeitaktivitäten. Es gab eine Bibliothek und Spielsäle, Tanzveranstaltungen und Theateraufführungen fanden statt. Natürrlich wurde auch über Politik diskutiert, in- und ausländische Presseerzeugnisse gelesen, man spielte Billard oder Karten, hörte Kammermusik, schwang das Tanzbein und führte Gespräche. In den Wänden des Círculo Mallorquín fanden rauschende Bälle statt, u.a, der große Ball zu Ehren von Königin Isabel II (1860) oder der Empfang des Königspaares Alfonso XII und Victoria Eugenia (1923). Die Ausrufung der Spanischen Republik 1931 läutete den Niedergang des noblen Zirkels ein und im Bürgerkrieg verschlechterte sich die Situation nochmals. Im Gebäude war jetzt eine Werkstatt der Frauenabteilung der Falange und der J.O.N.S untergebracht. Trotz des Engagements der heutigen Mitglieder ist der Círculo Mallorquín nie wieder zu dem geworden, was er einst war.

Balearic slingers Feared throughout the Mediterranean, these master stone slingers made up one of the most famous militias of Ancient Times. Honderos baleares. ost historians maintain that the first Balearic slingers were fugitives from the Trojan War who reached what were then known as the Gymnesic Islands. Few people know that the words Gymnesic (of Greek origin) and Balearic (of Punic origin) mean the same: literally, ‘men who throw stones and wear no armour’. That is to say, slingers. Balearic slingers took part in important battles and were mercenaries of the Carthaginian army, where they demonstrated their excellent attack technique by destroying shields and armour with the art of the slingshot. Their skill and resistance at defending their territory meant the Romans took two years to conquer the islands. From an early age, the mothers of these slingers would try to develop their skill with the slingshot, forcing them to use their slings to take down the fruit from the trees to eat it. In this way, they had no choice but to improve their aim if they wanted to survive. This exigency turned them into veritable fighting machines. Balearic slingers went into battle half naked. They were accompanied only by their slingshots, of which they usually carried up to three, adapted to the different requirements of distance, weight or precision of a given moment in time. They could shoot up to distances of 100 metres with the force of a catapult. Every time the enemy tried to reach the coast, they met with a shower of stones. The slingshots could be made of different materials: flax, esparto, other vegetable fibres, horse hair or goat gut which were plaited.

Solamente les acompañaban sus hondas, normalmente hasta tres y todas ellas diferentes y adaptadas a distintas necesidades de distancia, peso o precisión de cada momento. Con el lanzamiento podían alcanzar hasta 100 metros de distancia con la fuerza de una catapulta. Cada vez que los enemigos intentaban alcanzar la costa eran recibidos con una lluvia de piedras. Las hondas estaban hechas con distintos materiales: lino, esparto, otras fibras vegetales, crin de caballo o tripas de cabra que se trenzaban.

Ihre Fähigkeiten und Widerstandskraft bei der Verteidigung ihres Territoriums sind legendär; die Römer brauchten ganze zwei Jahre, um die Balearen zu erobern. Schon von Kindesbeinen an wurden die Steinschleuderer im Umgang mit der Steinschleuder geschult. Und zwar von ihren Müttern, die die Söhne dazu anhielten, mit der Steinschleuder Früchte vom Baum zu holen. Treffsicherheit war also für die Nahrungsaufnahme und das eigene Überleben unerlässlich und so wurden aus Kindern wahre Kampfmaschinen, die nur mit Lendenschurz bekleidet, in den Kampf zogen. Dabei hatten sie meist drei verschiedene Steinschleudern, die je nach Abstand, Gewicht und gewünschter Präzision des Schusses eingesetzt wurden. Mit einer Wurfweite von 100 Metern hatte die Steinschleuder die Kraft eines Katapults. Jedes Mal, wenn Feinde die Küsten der Balearen erobern wollten, wurden sie mit einem wahren Steinhagel empfangen. Die Steinschleudern wurden aus Leinen, Espartogras oder anderen Pflanzenfasern, geflochtener Pferdemähne oder den Eingeweiden von Ziegen angefertigt.

The Huaorani live in the Amazon jungle in Ecuador, and see themselves as the bravest group in the region. They had no contact whatsoever with the outside world until 1956. The Nenets are reindeer herders who migrate across the Yamal peninsula in Siberia every year, at temperatures of - 50º in winter. The journey is over 1,000 km long and includes 48 km over the frozen waters of the River Ob. Vor mehr als 45.000 Jahren kamen die Huli nach Papua Neuguinea. Sie bemalen ihre Gesichter mit gelber, roter und weißer Farbe und tragen Perücken, die sie aus Eigenhaar anfertigen. Die Samburu leben seit mehr als 500 Jahren im Norden Kenias. Sie sind Nomaden, die alle vier bis fünf Wochen weiterwandern, damit ihr Vieh genügend Futter findet. Im ecuadorianischen Amazonasgebiet siedeln die Huaorani, die sich als das mutigste Volk der Region verstehen und bis 1956 keinen Kontakt mit der Außenwelt hatten. Die Jamal Nenzen sind Rentierzüchter, die jedes Jahr bei Temperaturen um die minus 50ºC im Winter mehr als tausend Kilometer über die Halbinsel Jamal in Sibirien wandern. Dabei müssen sie eine 48 Kilometer lange Strecke über die eisigen Wasser des Ob zurücklegen. Bis 1991 durfte kein Außenstehender das verbotene Reich besuchen. Seit dem XIX Jahrhundert treiben die Kasachen ihre Herden durch die Täler der Mongolei - weitab der westlichen Welt, wie so viele Indigenenvölker.

Mysteries of Greenland In the least-densely populated country on the planet, lakes appear and disappear and sharks live for more than 400 years. Misterios de Groenlandia. reenland is the second-largest island in the world, after Australia. Because of the thick layer of ice that covers it, humans are forced to live in the coastal areas. There are no roads, or trains. They can only travel by plane, helicopter, snowmobile or dog sled. This huge island was discovered by the Vikings, but it had already been inhabited by other Arctic peoples previously. In the year 1200 the Inuit arrived, and survived there for centuries under extreme conditions. Denmark colonised Greenland in the 18th century and did not become self-governing until 1979. Today it has 57,000 inhabitants who are witnesses to the astonishing natural events that occur there. Last year, in a matter of weeks, two lakes disappeared that had existed for around 40 years. Shortly afterwards, this phenomenon recurred around the island. Lakes appeared and disappeared and nobody could understand where the water was relocating. Scientists believed that it could only be explained as an impact of climate change. In 2014, below the mantle of ice that covers 84% of the surface of Greenland, NASA found a 2.7-million-year-old frozen organic soil. Specifically, it was a tundra landscape under 3 kilometres of ice. This fact took down the theory many scientists maintained, as this vegetation had been maintained through several different periods of global warming. But the surprises of Greenland do not end here. Curiously enough, the longest-living animal on the planet lives in the waters of this country. It is the Greenland shark, which is 5 metres long, and can live for over 400 years.

Heute leben auf Grönland 57.000 Einwohner, die die sich derzeit ereignenden überraschenden Naturphänomene aus nächster Nähe erleben können. Im vergangenen Jahr verschwanden innerhalb von wenigen Wochen zwei Gletscherseen, die seit 40 Jahren existiert hatten. Kurze Zeit später wiederholte sich das Phänomen: Seen entstanden und verschwanden und niemand verstand, wohin das Wasser abfloss. Wissenschaftler sehen die Ursache im Klimawandel. Unter dem Packeis, das 84 Prozent der Fläche Grönlands bedeckt, entdeckte die NASA 2014 eine 2,7 Millionen Jahre alte Erdschicht, eine urzeitliche Tundralandschaft, die an der Unterseite des mehr als drei Kilometer dicken Eisschildes festgefroren war. Bis dato waren zahlreiche Wissenschaftler davon ausgegangen, dass die Erdschichten während verschiedener Kalt- und Warmzeiten intakt geblieben waren. Diese Theorie wurde nun hinfällig. hen the Hubble telescope points to outer space, it is capable of taking snapshots of stars and galaxies located 13,000 million light years away from us, nebula explosions, the atmosphere of other planets, the remains of a supernova or striking photos like those of the Eagle Nebula. The earth’s atmosphere changes light conditions and poses an obstacle to taking photographs of the cosmos as clearly as those on these pages. Which is why Hubble was designed: to circulate outside the atmosphere. Its name is a tribute to astronomer Edwin Hubble, who classified the shapes of galaxies in the 1930s. Of the huge variety of structures, the most frequent are the elliptical and the spiral ones. The former have many old stars, little gas and some stars that are beginning to form. Spiral galaxies, like the Milky Way where we are situated, are remarkable in that they have younger stars, a lot of gas and dust and molecular clouds, where stars are born. Less symmetrical and harmonious are the so-called irregular galaxies, but they are equally beautiful, although infrequent and much smaller than the rest. eady to go on one of the most beautiful ‘slow’ journeys on the planet?... Well we start by exploring Marseille and its colourful alleys. We stop off at the Notre-Dame Basilica, visit the port, ‘Le Panier’ and try the best hot chocolate in the area of La Vieille Charité in order to regain strength and discover the pottery workshop Sardine d’Argile. Near Marseille is the town of Cassis, renowned for its crème liqueur. We lose ourselves cycling around the outskirts, to see the Calanques National Park, with coves and cliffs and turquoise waters. Later on, we stop at the important medieval market of Hyères. Our goal today is the luxurious coastal town of Saint Tropez. After an hour’s drive, we visit its old quarter, La Ponche, with the Portalet and ‘old’ towers and the beach of Bouillabaisse. The best seafood in the area is served up on this beach, complete with sea views and sunsets. To spend the night, we choose the Château Hôtel de la Messardière and its 400-square-metre spa. Next morning, we are in Cannes, a town best known for its film festival, but also for its Castle of Le Suquet with views of the bay or the medieval fortress, Fort Royal, which we reach by boat, passing by the island of Sainte Marguerite, where the restaurant La Guérite offers delicious dishes with live French music. Half an hour away from Cannes is Antibes, and its Picasso Museum, located in the Grimaldi family castle. The ‘Sun King’, Louis XIV of France, also left a legacy here in the form of the Vauvan walls. After visiting the city’s monuments, we relax for a few hours at the Royal Spa****, a wellness centre that only uses natural products, before heading off to Nice. This coastal town, constructed in the 14th century BC, receives thousands of tourists for its carnival and the Battle of Flowers in Place Masséna and Promenade des Anglais. As well as its museum of fine arts, the Albert I gardens and the Hôtel de Ville building dating from 1730, Nice is where the Corniche roads start, the same ones Grace Kelly and Cary Grant travelled along in To Catch a Thief. We follow Grace Kelly to Monaco, a little paradise of cliffs cared for by the royal house of Grimaldi since 1297, where the Red Cross charity gala is held every year, created by its Oscar-winning princess. The best place to stay here nowadays is the Hôtel Hermitage***** in Monte Carlo. After a deep slumber lasting eight hours, we set off towards Menton, 15 minutes from Nice. This ‘garden city’ has been

winning awards since 1995, thanks to a team of gardeners who tend the 46 hectares of green zones like Fontana Rosa. And now the time has come to cross over into Italy and San Remo, its song festival and the country’s biggest flower market. At the Hotel Royal***** we find three restaurants that fuse modernity with the traditional cuisine of this region of Liguria. Upon reaching Porto Maurizzio, a boat ride awaits us so that we can contemplate the colourful houses around the basilica from the sea. Later, we go to Savona to see the baptistery and the palaces, and to rest at the Hotel NH Savona Darsena*****, with its modern guest rooms and sea views. And on the last day of our trip, we reach Genoa, ‘the lady of the sea’ according to the humanist, Petrarch. Its symbol is the lighthouse tower. The end of the road is Portofino, set amidst transparent waters and little boats. Its narrow streets lead us to the Piazzeta and the bay of San Fruttuoso, in the depths of which lies the famous bronze statue of the Christ of the Abyss.

efore pronouncing his assertion ‘less is more’ and becoming the representative of architectural sobriety, Mies Van der Rohe (Aachen, Germany, 1886 – Chicago, USA 1969) did not have to study architecture. He did not even have a high school diploma, but at the age of 14 he began working in his father’s stone carving shop. Shortly afterwards, he was foreman on a building site and an ornamentation drawer in a stucco-plasterer’s workshop. In 1905 he moved to Berlin to work as a furniture designer in the workshop of Bruno Paul. Less than a decade had passed since he started out professionally when he culminated his first work, the Riehl House. He then opened his own studio in Berlin, but still did not have many commissions. World War I sent him to Romania, far from his family. Upon his return, he joined an avant-garde group, the ‘Novembergruppe’, executing revolutionary projects like the Friedrichstrasse office building in Berlin, two twenty-storey skyscrapers joined by a central part with stairs and lifts. Around the same time he also edited the magazine ‘G’. In 1926 he executed some large projects such as the Wolf house in Gubin, or the Hermann Lange house, in Krefeld. In 1929 he designed the German pavilion for the Universal Exposition in Barcelona, his best-known work. From 1930 to 1933 he directed the Bauhaus, and he later emigrated to the United States where he became director of the architecture faculty in Chicago. In the 1950s he built the famous glass skyscraper, the Seagram Building, in New York, one of his last relevant creations.

Al volver se hace miembro de un grupo de vanguardia “Novembergruppe”, realizando proyectos revolucionarios como el edificio de oficinas de la Friedchstrasse en Berlín, dos torres de veinte pisos unidas por una parte central de escaleras y ascensores. Por aquél entonces también editó la revista “G”. En 1926 llevó a cabo grandes proyectos, como la casa de ladrillos Wolf en Guben, o la casa Hermann Lange, en Krefeld. En 1929 realizó el pabellón de Alemania para la Exposición Internacional de Barcelona, su obra más conocida. De 1930 a 1933 dirigió la Bauhaus, y posteriormente emigró a Estados Unidos donde fue director de la facultad de arquitectura en Chicago. En los años 50 construyó el famoso rascacielos de vidrio Seagram Building, en Nueva York, una de sus últimas creaciones relevantes.

Drei Jahre später entwirft er mit dem deutschen Pavillon für die Weltausstellung in Barcelona sein wohl bekanntestes Werk. Von 1930 bis 1933 leitet er das Bauhaus, später emigriert er in die USA, wo er am Institute of Technology, Chicago, die Abteilung für Architektur leitet. In den 50er Jahren entwirft er den berühmten gläsernen Wolkenkratzer Seagram Building (New York), eines seiner letzten bedeutenden Werke.

t the age of 18 Patricia Urquiola (Oviedo, 1961) left home: she wanted to see the world. She began studying architecture in Madrid and completed her studies at the Politecnico di Milano. A year later, after writing a thesis with Achille Castiglioni, considered a master of design in Italy, she started to work for the firm De Padova. In 2001, at the age of 40, she managed to set up her own studio in Milan. This was when her career really took off. In 2003, she won Elle magazine’s ‘designer of the year’ award. Later, in 2005, she was named ‘furniture designer of the year’, a distinction awarded by the prestigious Wallpaper. She was awarded the Gold Medal for merit in the Fine Arts from the Spanish Ministry of Culture in 2010. Her creative talent and intense personality are translated into each of her ideas, furniture items, product designs, interiors or installations, meaning international brands such as Alessi, Flos, Kartell, Mutina, Axor, or important hotel chains like Mandarin or W Hotels rely on her season after season. With regard to furniture and decoration design, names like the Lowland Sofa, the One Container or the Flower Chair have travelled around the world. Her works are currently on display in iconic spaces, such as the New York MoMA.

He founded his studio in 2002 and ever since then, he has accumulated many awards for his work on products, installations and architecture. Dror’s ideas work as a vehicle for change with the goal of improving each individual’s wellbeing. For Dror, one of the most sustainable activities people can engage in is ‘creating connections between people and objects, ambiences, other people and even towns’. This holistic practice, which is seen as one of the most innovative in the sector, works on each scale of the creative process, questioning every step in the creation of anything from a vase to an entire city. Magical monuments In the second millennium BC on Mallorca and Menorca societies co-existed which left some unique constructions for posterity, known as talayots. Monumentos mágicos. En el segundo milenio a.C., en Mallorca y Menorca convivieron sociedades que dejaron para la posteridad los talaiots, unas construcciones únicas. Bauwerke voller Magie. Im zweiten Jahrtausend vor Christus lebten auf Mallorca und Menorca Volksgruppen, die der Nachwelt einzigartige Bauwerke hinterließen: die Talayots.

oth islands, Mallorca and Menorca, are openair museums that reflect the echo of ancient Mediterranean peoples through the emblematic monuments of the Talayotic culture, the most-studied period of prehistory of the Balearics. Whereas in Mallorca, we can distinguish two types of talayots, square-based and round-based ones, Menorca can boast of having one that is unique in the world, the Taula (meaning ‘table’ in Catalan). Even today archaeologists still argue over the true function of this T-shaped construction, of it has even been said that it was a table for giants. In spite of the mystery surrounding these constructions which now co-exist perfectly integrated into the natural landscape of the islands and attract numerous tourists and archaeology enthusiasts, we do however know the true function of some talayotic constructions. This is the case of the defence and watchtowers, the houses of the heads of the tribes in the Bronze Age, or the cemeteries like the Son Real necropolis in Mallorca, which is located next to the sea, or the boat-shaped funerary mound of ‘Naveta des Tudons’ in Menorca, which is also the oldest building in all of Europe. Entire villages have also been discovered, like Ses Païsses in Mallorca, or Torre d’en Galmés in Menorca. It is thought that this latter one was more important given its high location and because it contains three talayots, one taula, several houses, a hall with columns inside it and even a water collection system.

Es gibt sogar die These, dass es sich um einen Tisch für Riesen handeln könne. Die Talayots sind perfekt in die Natur der Inseln integriert und eine Attraktion für Touristen und Hobby-Archäologen. Während sich einige Bauwerke ob ihres Ursprungs weiter in Schweigen hüllen, ist bei anderen deren Funktion bekannt. Zum Beispiel bei Wachtürmen, den Häusern der Stammeshäuptlinge aus der Bronzezeit oder den Friedhöfen, wie die Totenstadt Son Real, die unmittelbar am Meer auf Mallorca liegt. Oder die Grabanlage Naveta des Tudons auf Menorca, übrigens das älteste Bauwerk Europas. Darüber hinaus hat man ganze Siedlungen entdeckt, wie Ses Païsses (Mallorca) oder Torre d’en Galmés (Menorca). Letztere scheint große Bedeutung gehabt zu haben; die Siedlung liegt erhöht und besteht aus drei Talayots, einem Tisch, einigen Häusern, einem Säulensaal im Innern und einem Wasserauffangsbecken.

ith millions of photos taken all over the world to his name, Trevor Clark is one of the most prolific photographers of the last six decades. His photographs have occupied the front pages of different magazines in several countries. But without a doubt his most famous images are the portraits in which, out of his London studio in the early 1960s, he immortalised those emerging pop groups that in time became legends, most outstandingly of them all The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. At his home in Portals Nous, where he has lived for nearly fifty years, and where he keeps the iconic images in frames, Clark remembers ‘the rush The Beatles were always in, it was crazy how busy they were’. And how he personally had to accompany Mick Jagger and his band ‘to buy them proper clothes for the promotional photos’ that he would take of them later in the studio. In 1968 Clark, by then much in demand with advertising agencies in his home country, decided to settle in Mallorca to facilitate the task of art directors and the agencies themselves when photographing for their campaigns, which for the most part called for a Mediterranean atmosphere. Since then and up until the present day, at 83, the photographer has not stopped working, accumulating a valuable stock of photographs over the years which has fed the communications media all over the world from Mallorca. Travel photographs and images of superyachts are also outstanding works of his.

Seine Bilder waren regelmäßig auf den Magazin-Titelseiten in vielen Ländern zu sehen. Zu seinen berühmtesten Aufnahmen gehören zweifelsohne die Porträts, die er Anfang der 60er Jahre von damals noch aufstrebenden Gruppen, wie The Beatles und The Rolling Stones machte, die später zu lebenden Legenden wurden. Clark lebt seit knapp 50 Jahren in Portals Nous, in seinem Haus hängen die Bilder der Ikonen an den Wänden. „Die Beatles hatten es immer eilig, waren stets total beschäftigt, es war verrückt“, erinnert sich der Fotograf. Einmal war er mit den Rolling Stones sogar noch geeignete Klamotten kaufen, ehe die Werbefotosession in Clarks Studio beginnen konnte. 1968, auf dem Höhepunkt seiner Karriere, verlegte Clark seinen Wohnsitz nach Mallorca. Die Werbeagenturen standen Schlange und da die meisten von ihnen Aufnahmen vor mediterraner Kulisse wünschten, erleichterte Clarks Umzug die Arbeit für die Agenturen und deren Art Directors. Bis heute hat der nunmehr 83-Jährige nicht mit dem Arbeiten aufgehört. Im Laufe der Jahre hat er ein riesiges wertvolles Fotoarchiv angelegt, dessen Bilder in den Medien rund um den Globus zu sehen sind. Außer den Porträts der Stars widmete sich Clark auch der Reisefotografie und dem Ablichten von Superyachten.

Photographs of Buddhas from Burma, furniture from Bali, baskets from Vietnam, lamps from London, vases from Marrakesh, milk jugs from Sri Lanka, Indian linen sheets, a football table salvaged from a boat in Tanzania, a collection of Mallorcan siphons... Because Gabriela and her husband Roland are tireless travellers who have been all around the world. Affording beautiful views of the sea, the sky and the woods, and architecture by Pino Giuseppe Violante with a prevalence of iron, glass and fine materials, the style of the house is extremely sober and industrial, highlighting the large spaces and the height of the ceilings. All of the photographs hanging on the walls of the house (of wild animals, the streets of New York, oriental figures) were taken by Gabriela herself, who counts photography amongst her many skills. One day the light, the colours, the aroma of the orange trees and the flowers of Mallorca captivated the Mauchers, making them settle on the island. At the same time, they enjoy the city of Palma and feel very fortunate to be able to live in a land where they find ‘every reason to be happy’. When they met in New York in 1981, Andy Warhol was already the brightest star in the firmament of living artists, and Jean-Michel Basquiat managed to attract his attention. ‘Jean-Michel got me into painting differently, and that’s a good thing’, Warhol wrote in his diary. The poems of Ricardo Eliecer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto, universally known as Pablo Neruda (Parral, Chile, 1904 – Santiago de Chile, 1973) have accompanied several generations of dreamers from all over the world, and still do today. When he was a teenager, poetess Gabriela Mistral gave him some books by Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and Chekov, establishing his literary vocation forever. His father was against him becoming a writer, so the young poet began signing his poems with a pseudonym, designed to confuse his parent. He found the name he chose – Neruda – by accident in a magazine. It was of Czech origin. In 1923 he himself paid to publish his first book of poems, Crepusculario. Just one year later, in 1924, he created his most famous work, Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair. For several years he was a diplomate in Asian countries, (Burma, Sri Lanka). In 1934, after meeting Federico García Lorca in Buenos Aires, he moved to Spain to take over the Chilean consulate in Barcelona. On his return to Chile, his active defence of socialism led him to go into exile for many years, forging his facet as a tireless traveller even more. In 1958, another of his most notable works was published: Estravagario. In 1971, Pablo Neruda became the third Latin American writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. In 1973, on 11th September, he was surprised by the military coup against president Salvador Allende. Deeply affected by the new political situation in his country, he was unable to withstand the tragedy. He died in Santiago on 23rd September.

uhammad Ali, who was born Cassius Clay in 1942 in Louisville, Kentucky, USA, is probably the greatest sportsman of all time, and one of the great popular figures of the 20th century. Three-time world heavyweight boxing champion (his 1974 fight in Kinshasa, Zaire, again George Foreman is one of the greatest watersheds in the history of the sport), his influence outside the ring was on a par of that of activists such as Martin Luther King or Malcom X. Ali, a black man who was humiliated on a daily basis due to the colour of his skin in the racist US of the mid-fifties, struggled to bring down not only other boxers with his fists, but also the injustices that governed a country he disowned for a long time. ‘No vietcong ever called me nigger’ he said, to illustrate his rejection and refusal to go and fight in the Vietnam War. He was sentenced to five years in prison. He avoided gaol, but forfeited the right to box for a long time. Loved by some and hated by others, his triumphs in the ring led him to unashamedly proclaim himself ‘the greatest, the king of the world’. His refusal to go to Vietnam and his conversion to Islam were political gestures that had an impact not only in his own country, but all over the world. He retired in the early ‘eighties and shortly afterwards he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He went on humanitarian missions Lebanon, Cuba, Afghanistan and South Africa. Over the years, he became a consensus man, celebrated by whites and blacks, left and right, and decorated by his country.

An indomitable adventurer On 14th December 1911 the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen led the expedition that was to leave the mark of humankind in the coldest, most frozen part of the planet for the very first time. un aventurero indomable. Roald Amundsen (Borge, Norway, 1872) managed to bring his group of explorers home safe and sound after conquering the South Pole, a titanic feat for his day and age. His dogs were less fortunate, as only 18 of them were able to accompany them on the return journey. The success of the South Pole heroes was tinged with tragedy just a week later, when all of the members of an English expedition that was trying to achieve the same goal froze to death. Amundsen’s team waited for spring to begin the expedition. But even then, the weather got worse as the days passed. Days when they covered 24 kilometres on the snow and ice. It took them two months to reach the southernmost point of the world and arrive at what Roald Amundsen named the Axel Heiberg glacier. Before and after conquering the South Pole, Roald Amundsen played a prominent part in other extreme adventures, like spending a winter in the Antarctic after his boat was trapped in the ice; flying over the north pole; integrating into the life and culture of the Inuit on King William Island (Canada), and making a four-year crossing through the Northeast Passage. Roald Amundsen was taking part in the rescue of the crew of the airship Italia in the North Pole on 18th June 1928, when his plane disappeared in the ocean. His remains were never found.

Vor und nach der Eroberung des Südpols war Roald Amundsen bei mehreren abenteuerlichen Entdeckungsreisen dabei. So überwinterte er in der Antarktis, als sein Schiff in einem Eisberg feststeckte. Er überflog mit einem Zepellin den Nordpol, lebte bei den Inuits auf der kanadischen Insel King William Island und entdeckte nach vier Jahren die Nordostpassage. Roald Amundsen nahm am 18. Juni 1928 an der Rettung der Mannschaft des Luftschiffs Italia am Nordpol teil. Dabei ging sein Wasserflugzeug im Meer verloren, die Wrackteile sind bis heute verschwunden.

he realisation of a dream’ is how this Italian couple define the experience of living for years in this place that is much more than a house, in complete harmony with nature. ‘It is a space for thought, a place for the soul, a kind of happiness energy machine’, explains Fabrizio Plessi, one of the most important multidisciplinary artists in the world over the last half-century. All of Plessi’s creations and ideas over recent years have come from his workshop in ’Sa Pedra’, which is the name of the house. Fabrizio and Carla carried out the full renovation of the house themselves, using the stones that were already on the property. The whole time with the aim of integrating the nature of the place inside the house itself, simply, naturally, without any kind of ostentation whatsoever, and employing infinite taste. ‘After all of the travelling we do to places like New York, London, Paris, coming back to this house was like regaining equilibrium, or inner peace, for us’, admits Carla. ‘Everybody feels at peace when they come to visit us; the vibrations of the house give everybody a good reception’. Kurze Zeit später wurde in Manacor ein Bioladen eröffnet, wo man Brot, Sobrassada, Käse, Marmelade, Joghurt, Obst und Gemüse kaufen konnte. Dann folgte der erste Ökoladen in der Markthalle von Palmas Stadtviertel Santa Catalina. Heute macht ökologische Produktion zehn Prozent des Anteils der Agrarwirtschaft der Insel aus und immer mehr Menschen begeistern sich dafür. Es ist richtig, dass die Preise für Bioprodukte noch immer etwas hoch sind, aber der Anbau dieser Produkte ist mit höheren Kosten und höherem Arbeitsaufwand verbunden. Wer keine Herbizide einsetzt, benötigt mehr Hände zum Arbeiten. Joan lebt die tägliche Routine des Landlebens. Er steht jeden Tag um 5.30 Uhr auf und meditiert im schönen Yoga-Saal auf Sa Teulera. In dem Raum, für Joan die „Seele der Finca“, finden auch Kurse statt. Danach geht er ein bisschen spazieren und fängt mit der Arbeit an. Obwohl seine Aufgabe hauptsächtlich im Überwachen besteht, ist er am glücklichsten, wenn er auf den Feldern sein kann.
