Peter Hansen, Head of School

“Many of our alumni stay in contact with their teachers for years, resulting in life-long friendships.”

More than three decades ago, a handful of members of Tates Creek Presbyterian Church (TCPC) had a vision to open a school for their children that provided an alternative, more rigorous curriculum than what was being presented to them through the public school system. These visionaries would open Tates Creek Academy (now Trinity Christian Academy) one year later in August of 1988 with a faculty of two, and 31 enrolled students. The school continued to grow year by year, adding a new grade each fall until the first graduating class was produced in 2000. For the last 35 years, “God has blessed the founders’ dreams by making Trinity Christian Academy one of the strongest classical schools in the state. Trinity has graduated hundreds of students who have gone on to do great things for the glory of Christ and the good of the Bluegrass.”

Trinity Triumphs

Growth and expansion are the order of the day at Lexington’s Trinity Christian Academy, which prides itself on “core values of faith, scholarship, virtue, and community.”Whentheenrollment in the lower grades at the private day school began to surge in recent years, staff and leadership realized that the upper grades would soon be bursting with students — and that they “would outgrow the current facilities (and soon).”They began the search in the Lexington area for land that could be home to the new campus and discovered the perfect spot when they found 45 acres of land on East Brannon Road. It was there that they encountered the first challenge: purchasing the land. As a non-profit organization, the school had to depend on the generous donations of people from the Trinity and Lexington community to help bring the vision to life. Through the generous donations of the Cowen Family, they were able to purchase the land that they needed, debt-free. Since then, the Trinity team has been busy “developing what the new campus will look like to best serve our students and the kingdom of God.”

Maintaining a low student-toteacher ratio has been key, allowing students “to have more undivided attention from their teachers, which not only allows them to be more successful academically, but more importantly, as a person. Especially in high school, our teachers don’t just teach, they disciple and mentor their students. As a result, many of our alumni stay in contact with their teachers for years, resulting in lifelong friendships with older, wiser, experienced people of faith all because of the time and energy their teachers were able to pour into them.”

Faith, Scholarship, Virtue, and Community

For parents who may not be familiar with an academic focus on classical education, staff explain, “At Trinity, we believe classical Christian education

LEGO Robotics team (grades 4-6) learns how to build and program a LEGO robot and must compete with other students across the state and country by programming their robot to carry out a specific set of tasks. The Trinity team had the opportunity to compete at the National level in May 2022. Trinity offers 9 different sports for students: basketball, volleyball, soccer, cheer, golf, cross country, track, and archery. Trinity is a member of the KHSAA. History is an important component of the curriculum especially for the elementary students. Each grade has one or more dedicated days where they get to bring history to life. These days entail the students and teachers dressing up in that time period, eating food from the era, and presenting on something from the time period.

“In the classical education method, nothing is ever studied in isolation. We believe that students learn best when they are able to draw connections across different subjects. For example, while studying a unit on the Westward Expansion, students will learn about the major events in history while discussing important scientific discoveries of that era and how the historical events influenced these discoveries. In literature, students will read books based on early American history and will study and create art that was popular at the time. Students are able to find what interests them and they can further expand on that subject through research papers and presentations in Kindergarten and continue through Grade 12 when they present their Senior Thesis based on a topic of their choice.”

“The main philosophy of the classical Christian education (CCE) model is the Trivium. This concept was developed centuries ago to represent the three stages of childhood development. We believe that tailoring education to these stages produces a well-rounded individual with a heart for service and a love of Jesus. The Trivium is made up of three stages: The Grammar Stage (grades 1-5), Logic Stage (grades 6-8), and Rhetoric Stage (grades 9-12).

A 2015 graduate, Libby Rockaway is the founder of a non-profit called MDdog.org which provides resources for Medical Alert Dog training standards and research; she has also written a book to instruct people how to train their dogs. When asked about her experience at Trinity, Libby noted that her foundational presentation and writing skills helped her receive the Thouron Award, a scholarship that has allowed her to pursue a Master’s of Science degree in the United Kingdom.

“The open topic theses during high school allowed me to delve into the specific subjects I was passionate about, furthering my knowledge and learning how to create an argument, develop it, and defend it—something which was required in almost every college class, whether it was participating in discussions or presenting an assigned side of an argument.”

The alumni ranks at Trinity swell with success stories like these. The leadership says, “At Trinity, we believe the foundational principles a student learns during these formative years are carried with them to college and beyond. We are proud that our students have found success in an array of different callings, from CEOs, to community leaders, to doctors, to military officers, and everything in Fine Arts is a big part of Trinity’s curricular and extracurricular activities. Students learn art appreciation beginning in preschool where they learn about works and techniques from great artists throughout time.

q Cure KY Kids Saving lives, one license

Cure KY Kids is a non-profit organization developed to raise funds for childhood cancer research and services in Kentucky. The organization is best known for the distinctive Cure KY Kids license plates. Executive Director Joy Minner says, “After years of work with the KY Department of Transportation by CURE KY Kids board members, families battling cancer and numerous others passionate about this cause, the Curing Childhood Cancer specialty license plate is now an official license plate in the state of Kentucky and can be seen on vehicles on the roads from Bowling Green to Florence and Ashland to Paducah, raising awareness and funds for Childhood Cancer.”

Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease among children. Over the last 20 years, survival rates are increasing due almost exclusively to advancements in treatments through research.

“It has been our privilege to serve families that receive treatment at the University of Kentucky Children’s Hospital by providing resources for these families. Many of these families need assistance with transportation, lodging, meals and even groceries and we have been able to support families in this capacity. With the funds raised from the license plate, it is our hope that we will be able to make a lasting impact on the lives of those families who are fighting childhood cancer across the Commonwealth.”Forthosewhowant to help, Joy says, “We would love for everyone to head down to their local tag office and purchase a Curing Childhood Cancer license plate today! It’s super easy and anyone can get one, whether it’s time to renew their license plate or not. This will help us not only raise funds to support those families that are fighting the battle against childhood cancer but will also help raise awareness about childhood cancer. We all know someone who has been touched by cancer and we want to let all the kids in Kentucky know that they are not alone in this battle.” plate at a time

Joy has been involved in philanthropic pursuits for over 20 years. While serving for several years as a pet therapy volunteer to pediatric cancer patients, her eyes were opened to the gaps in pediatric cancer support. That experience and her passion for children provided the seeds of inspiration to co-found CURE KY Kids, Inc. with husband Matt Minner. Having spent his career as an attorney often representing children and their families in the most difficult of times, he also felt called to serve. The two recognized there was a significant need for improvement in facilities, services and research in the fight against pediatric cancer.Joysays,

LexingtonFamilies.com | Lexington Families Guide 2022 29 Minimalism and simplicity have become such popular movements, it’s no longer just the baby boomers who are looking to downsize, declutter, simplify, and organize.

3. If an item doesn’t “spark joy,” say “thanks for the memories” and send it on to its next adventure.

2. Break down a category into manageable bites.

Deciding what stays and what goes is a vital and meaningful part of the downsizing process. Many items will be mementos, but the bottom line is you can keep the memories without the clutter. If you can live without it, you can do without it. Items that are no longer needed can go on to a new home, or a new use, and can often be repurposed or recycled — whether that involves donating them to a good cause like your local Habitat ReStore, or using a yard sale, or marketplace to generate extra funds.

The LA Times found that the average American home contains around 300,000 items. And according to The Wall Street Journal, Americans spend $1.2 trillion each year on nonessential goods — meaning things they don’t need. Most of us could do more with less.

Downsizing looks different for everyone, and it is best to first decide what it looks like for you. Perhaps you’re moving from a large single-family home to a condo? Perhaps you’ve suddenly found yourself with an empty nest. You might be considering moving in with family members?

Although Marie Kondo’s bestseller has been a little too trendy in recent years, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up offered concrete, useful strategies:1.Discard by category, not by room.

There is no “right” age to begin the process, just as there is no “right” age to begin a “diet” — instead, just like with proper nutrition, consider it a lifestyle choice — a way of living.

Less is More Downsize, Declutter, and De-Stress Banish the guilt. Every generation is going to pass on its fair share of Pelotons.

4. After you’ve discarded and decluttered, then you can Makeorganize.theprocess fun. Put on your favorite music. Or turn on your favorite TV show and just work during the length of each commercial. Invite friends and family and send them home with a few treasures you no longer need or want. (Banish the guilt. Every generation is going to pass on its fair share of Pelotons.)

HOME & GARDEN

And never hesitate to call in a professional if the process seems too overwhelming. There are dozens of local organizers and movingconcierges who offer an array of services to fit a variety of budgets. q

E arlier in the year, the University of Kentucky announced that a historic $5 million gift from the University’s largest single donor would help thousands of young Kentuckians from underserved areas obtain a degree from UK. The scholarship program will also target students from medically underserved areas who want to attend medical school at UK. Gatton set a standard for philanthropy for more than 25 years. The college of business and economics at UK bears his name as does the university’s student center. He provided the foundational gifts for both the Gatton College facility and the Gatton Student Center. The total impact of his gifts at UK now total more than $70 million.

“Bill Gatton appreciates what education meant for him and for his family,” he said. “He spent a lifetime giving back and paying it forward, knowing that the seeds he plants today will yield a much brighter tomorrow for our state.”

K spokesperson Jay Blanton said of legendary businessman Bill Gatton who died in 2022, “I think Bill Gatton is one of the most important people at the University of Kentucky perhaps in our history. He was an incredible philanthropist,” in addition to being a prominent UK alum. UK head basketball coach John Calipari said, “One of the best supporters of our university, Bill Gatton, has passed. A visionary who was so charitable to causes close to his heart, his name is on our student center and College of Business and Economics. He was a kind, generous man who did so much.”

President Eli Capilouto said at the time, “He believes that it is Kentucky’s children — this generation of young people and those who will follow — who will secure a future for a state that is healthier, wealthier and wiser.”

Mike Richey, who recently retired as UK’s vice president for Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement, worked closely with Gatton and his foundation.
