Healthy Feet, Healthy You! Q A
Foot Health Tips with Dr. Nicole Freels, FACFAOM
Why is foot health so important?
Think about it like this - just like the foundation of a house, your feet are the foundation of your body. It’s so important for your feet to be supported, sturdy and healthy so your body can function at its very best. Believe it or not, discomfort in your back, knees and even hips can often be traced back to your feet. Healthy feet are the first step to a healthier you!
Q A
What are some tips for maintaining good general foot health?
Check those toes! I always recommend frequent foot checks for any changes. Make sure to protect your feet by keeping them dry and clean. It’s also smart to wear shoes that suit your foot shape and your lifestyle - don’t wear loafers everyday if you are on your feet all day long. Finally, if you have reoccurring pain, make an appointment. We can help get you back on your feet.
Q
What are some things we can do at home before making an appointment?
A
Not every injury or roll of the ankle requires an appointment. In these cases, the RICE method has been proven most effective, and you can do it from home! If you have any sort of injury, you should rest, ice, compress and elevate. This may mean making a change in your daily routine or taking a break from activities that agitate your foot or ankle, but it can prevent long-term issues down the road.

Q A
At what point is it necessary to see a podiatrist?
If you have any pain in your feet or ankles or notice any changes in your feet that concern you, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. If there is an issue, come see us! We can work together to create a treatment plan that is best for you and your lifestyle. If there is nothing to be concerned about, you walk away with peace of mind and happy feet.
Q A
With Spring and Summer coming up, what are some tips to keep feet looking and feeling fresh?
As the weather gets warmer, people start walking around barefoot. Ick. I can’t stress this enough don’t do it! Especially when it comes to community pools and showers. Going barefoot risks developing toenail fungus or Athlete’s Foot. Walking barefoot in contaminated locker rooms or sharing shoes with someone who has Athlete’s foot is all it takes. Prevention is key and a pair of locker room shoes can be purchased for next to nothing!

Meet the Legends
Neighborhood Church hosts popular leadership series
N
eighborhood churches are a big part of what makes east Lexington so special. Liberty Road Faith Fellowship is a relative newcomer to the area, and is a gathering of Christian believers from many different historic denominations. The church has quickly made a name for themselves in the neighborhood by hosting a popular monthly “Legends” breakfast series. The series also often provides an opportunity to get to know local elected officials and leaders. The April Legends Breakfast on Saturday April 27 will include guest speakers Mayor Linda Gorton and District 6 Councilmember Angela Evans.
T
he Legends Breakfasts at Liberty Road Faith Fellowship started soon after the union of Liberty Road Community Church and Faith Fellowship in May of 2016. It began as a Men’s Breakfast suggested by the late Dr. Bill Turner and organized by then-Administrative Board chairman Ron Reaguer. Originally there were no speakers until Mr. Reaguer asked church member Jim Host if he could arrange for speakers once monthly (usually on the third Saturday of the month).
Jim Host
When Mr. Host invited former UK great Jack “Goose” Givens to speak, everyone wanted to attend and thus the name changed to Legends Breakfast. Host’s contacts in the world of sports, particularly UK, allowed him to invite numerous well known figures. They all had a connection to athletics but, like Goose Givens talking about his role in securing wireless networks for all of Kentucky, they also had a message. For instance, Mitch Barnhart, UK athletic director, spoke of the department’s support of the University’s commitment to the academic progress of all its student athletes and its financial support of the University’s infrastructure. UK Hoops coach Matthew Mitchell and
Tom Leach
baseball coach Nick Mangione talked of their unconditional sponsorship of the spiritual growth of their teams. Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day brought his story of a faith journey that led his support of track chaplain’s at Keeneland and Churchill Downs. Derrick Ramsey, a UK and NFL great, spoke of the opportunity afforded him by athletics to make something of his life after sports. Former UK football coach Guy Morriss related his health struggles brought about by pro football and present UK coach Vince Morrow talked of the type of young men the program recruits. Tom Hammond, of NBC sports, and Larry Conley, one of “Rupp’s Runts,” as well as Voice of the Wildcats Tom Leach and UK great Cameron Mills gave the program a boost as did former “Voice” Ralph Hacker. Even Jim Host related his rise as the first scholarship baseball player at UK to leading the evolution of NCAA sports media networks and changing the face of college athletics’ media productions. When Host had to temporarily take a break from coordinating the series to rehab a total knee replacement, David Bondurant secured Dave Adkisson, president of the Kentucky Chamber of Commerce, as the speaker in March and persuaded Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton and Sixth
COVER STORY District Councilmember Angela Evans to address the group in April. (The Mayor was originally scheduled for February but the birth of a granddaughter led to a postponement.)
L
inda Gorton, the longest-serving member of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council, is serving her first term as Lexington Mayor. Mayor Gorton was elected in November 2018 with 63% of the vote. Mayor Gorton has started her term with an emphasis on developing a comprehensive action plan to help those who suffer from opioid addiction. Another early and ongoing priority is economic development … jobs, jobs, jobs. Mayor Gorton is focused on making Lexington a technological hub, including high tech agriculture. Councilmember Angela Evans serves the constituents of our sixth district — home to 17 neighborhood associations, nine public schools, and seven city parks, including the Brighton Rail Trail, a shared use trail from Man O War Blvd, connecting to Pleasant Ridge Park and Polo Club Boulevard — and Hamburg. She began her legal career as a public defender in Lexington—she served on the Ethics Commission from 2002-2009 and was the Chairperson from 2007-2009. One of her proud accomplishments for the community is her implementation of Lexington’s first Youth Citizens Academy which provides high school freshmen with handson introduction to local government. The May Legends series speakers will be announced soon, and the series will then be on summer hiatus, resuming in September. The April Legends Breakfast is on Saturday, April 27 at 9 am at Liberty Road Faith Fellowship. Breakfasts are held in Kearns Hall (behind the church) at 9:00 a.m. Please call (859) 277-0420 to make reservations if you plan to attend. Neighbors can also join Councilmember Angela Evans at the 6th District Wide Meeting on April 29 at 6:30 pm at Eastside Library. T
he rest of life is the best of life. Lexington — a thriving college town with a reasonable cost of living, a temperate climate, and access to world class healthcare — has long been a popular retirement destination for seniors and the elderly. With ample shopping and dining options alongside a vibrant healthcare hub,
Hamburg and the eastside, in particular, has proven particularly popular for senior living, with three new prospective communities currently under development. Lexington’s $13 million Senior Center, designed by EOP Architects, opened in 2016 in Idle Hour Park off Richmond Road. The popular site — with easy access and drive-up parking — will be the home of this year’s I Know Expo. Since 2013, Lexington has been home to this unique senior living expo that offers a one-stop-shop, one-day event that invites guests to address senior issues like financial planning, transportation, aging in place, housing, and more.
In prior years, it was held downtown at the Lexington Center — often at the same time as the Spring Home and Garden Show, which could make for challenging access and parking options.

FOOD
Easter Eggs BY TOM YATES
I
suppose I should feel somewhat embarrassed that I believed in the Easter bunny far far longer than I believed in St. Nicholas. Understanding those major holiday icons (the big guns) while living as a kid in Austria was a bit odd. The local folks took both holidays very seriously. In my book, it came down to St Nicholas and the Easter Bunny. While I loved the notion of St. Nicholas, he came with so much baggage, both literally and figuratively. Naughty. Nice. Good. Bad. Rules. On the other hand, the Easter bunny just showed up and dropped a few eggs. Done. No expectations. Pretty cool. It was no a brainer. I believed. Easter morning meant baskets of candy, chocolate bunnies, and Easter eggs littering our living room floor. When the hoopla settled down, Frau Olga would slip into the kitchen and quietly prepare soft boiled eggs with toasted soldiers. Perched atop white porcelain eggs cups, the warm runny yolks and jiggly soft whites oozed through the gently cracked shells and dripped into warm yellow puddles. I still dream about those Easter eggs. Soft Boiled Eggs With Toast For the soldiers, I could have gone all artisanal with the bread, but purposely kept it very simple, and made basic white bread (milk, water, butter, sugar, and yeast).
Eggs.

The great boiled egg debate. Boiled and rested, boiled, simmered, or steamed? Pick your poison. It seems everyone has the perfect solution for perfectly boiled eggs. Of course, many factors come into play with the ultimate outcome depending on the size of the eggs, the freshness of the eggs, the degree of heat, and the desired doneness (soft, medium, or hard). I love hard boiled eggs. While they’re great for salads, deviled eggs, and snacks, I was shooting for the warm goo of soft boiled eggs. After filling the bottom of a small sauce pan with 3/4 cold water, I brought the water to a boil, lowered large Elmwood Stock Farm organic eggs into the water, cover the pan, and let the eggs steam/poach for exactly 5 1/2 minutes before pulling them from the heat and running them under cold water. I tucked the soft boiled eggs into egg cups, used an egg-topper to snap open the eggs, sprinkled the yolks with cracked black pepper, and finished with delicate sprigs of fresh dill. Easter eggs. Toast the yolks. hamburgjournal.com | April 2019

Tails and Ales 2019 The Lexington Humane Society hosted their annual Tails and Ales event on Saturday, March 2 to benefit the animals living at the shelter. During the evening, there was a silent auction, kissing booth (with an adorable puppy), and local vendors sampling their beers and foods. LHS was able to raise over $50,000 through tickets and silent auction purchases and every penny went to the animals. To date, this is the most money ever raised at this particular event. Mirror Twin Brewing, Ethereal, Country Boy, Jarfly, Pivot Brewing, and West Sixth Brewing were just a couple vendors at the event. Chuy’s Tex-Mex was there handing out delicious cakes and gearing up for their opening in Hamburg.

New Additions to the Lexington Mounted Police Unit
Remington is going to be 5 years old this year,” said Stephanie Keeley, Equine Instructor.
The Mounted Police Unit in Lexington has added two new horses to the mix, a couple of beautiful Clydesdales named Winchester and Remington. Surprisingly, they have never been ridden before.
It takes a long time for horses to mature mentally and physically, so the process to get these two Clydesdales out in the field will take some time. The equine instructors goal is to have these horses ready for work within a year.
“Everyone loves the Clydesdales. They are beautiful, they are very impressive looking horses. Winchester is slightly older. He is turning 6 years old this year.
Keeley says “The focus is on what’s best for the horse and preparing the horse to the best of our ability before we put them out on the street.”

It was a fun atmosphere to experience because you could feel the pride the artists have through them showcasing their craft and passion. Local artistry is a fun thing to participate in and support.
HOME & GARDEN Lexington’s 2045 Metropolitan Transportation Plan Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization has revealed the 2045 Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP) — a long range plan that outlines goals and strategies, guiding the expenditure of federal transportation funds in Fayette and Jessamine counties for the next 26 years. The MPO’s proposed long-range plan outlines a multi-modal approach to transportation investment with goals to improve access and safety for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and motorists. “Everyone who lives and travels through Fayette and Jessamine counties is affected by transportation, so public feedback is a vital part of the process of long-term planning, “said Kenzie Gleason with the Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). “We want residents and commuters to voice their priorities and concerns so that we can take that into account when making regional transportation decisions.”
Many Americans live in inadequate housing conditions creating barriers to opportunity, success and health.
Unlock a family’s future by shopping at the store that builds strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter. The draft 2045 plan is available online at lexarempo.org until April 13, 2019 for the public to review and offer comments on. Additionally, people can direct questions and offer comments about the plan to the MPO by contacting Kenzie Gleason at kgleason@lexingtonky.gov or at 859258-3605. Pending public comment, the plan is scheduled for adoption by the MPO on April 24, 2019.
