Neighborhood Wages

The Wall Street Journal reports “Target said it plans to spend up to $300 million more this year on workers, which includes increasing pay and other benefits. Starting hourly wages at Target for store and supply-chain workers will range from $15 to $24, the company said. According to WSJ, “A spokeswoman declined to share how many workers are likely to start at the high end of the range. Many national retailers set

pay ranges for roles that adjust for the cost of living in certain markets, and warehouse workers tend to earn more than employees that work in physical stores. Over the past year, retail and warehouse worker wages have risen as competition for workers climbs in a tight labor market. Cited in the same article, Costco has also announced plans to raise its starting wage to $17.50 per hour, Wal-Mart said in September it would increase its starting wage to $12 per hour, and Home Depot reported that while “labor expenses are up, so are profits and sales. The company’s profit rose more than 17% to $3.4 billion in the quarter ended Jan. 30, compared with the same period last year.” There is no official word on wage increases for Target, Costco, Wal-Mart, and Home Depot in our neighborhood.

NEIGHBORHOOD

Make Your Neighborhood Better

Lexington residents are invited to help chart the future by hosting and joining citywide conversations during On the Table program, April 10 thru 16. The conversations will be held in homes, businesses, parks, schools, libraries, online, or in person, and Hamburg is host to several. Mayor Linda Gorton said, “During the pandemic Lexington has proved over and over again that by working together we can meet any challenge. On the Table is an opportunity to work together in a unique way.” This year, On the Table will focus on Lexington’s 2023 Comprehensive Plan, which helps gauge longrange city planning. The plan helps guide economic development opportunities, parks planning, transportation, arts and cultural opportunities, and other priorities over the next 20 years. On the Table Lexington is part of a national network of On the Table Conversations started by the Chicago Community Trust. In the past, Blue Grass Community Foundation led On the Table, and passed the project along to CivicLex in 2019.

Meet our Feathered Neighbor: Pelly

According to Nashville’s WKRN, “Here in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky, there is a lot of beauty to be seen on our area lakes, and in recent

years, American White Pelicans have increased their presence in our region during the fall and winter months during the migration south.” Our southeast Lexington neighbors have an excellent opportunity to observe an American white pelican at our very own neighborhood park. Nicknamed “Pelly” by area photographers, he (or she) has been living at Jacobson Park since around Fall of 2021. One neighbor has dubbed it a “pelicwan,” because “it looked like a swan with a pelican beak from afar.” Lake Linville in nearby Mt. Vernon has also been home to at least one Pelican this past winter. While American white pelicans typically stay in flocks, Pelly has so far remained the only one of his species here, content to hang out with Jacobson’s double-crested cormorants. Neighborhood photographer David Kravetz says, “I went this morning and watched him playing with the cormorants...actually mimicking them. He can be hilarious, trying to fit in.” Birdwatchers Digest reports, “Although American white pelicans were a rare transient through Kentucky in historical times, it’s only in the past 20 years that we have begun to see regularity to their occurrence and a great increase in their numbers.”

Anna Wiker, a park naturalist with Parks & Recreation, says, “I think this is a really great opportunity for folks to get out to a local park and see something that you’re not normally going to see in Kentucky.” According to Wiker, American white pelicans are generally associated with the coast and the Western United States. While no one is sure exactly how Pelly wound up at Jacobson Park, an injury to its right wing during migration likely knocked it off course. The pelican has since recovered from the injury but remains a fixture at Jacobson Park. Lexington Parks and Recs have important reminders for our neighbors who plan on visiting Pelly or any of our local parks in the future: • Do not feed any of the wildlife. • Do not chase wildlife! • Take care of wildlife that is in our parks. It’s common for water birds, including pelicans, ducks, cormorants, geese, etc. to be tangled in fishing line and cause lacerations that could lead to fatality. Be mindful. • Be responsible with cleaning up trash and disposing of it in proper locations.

Rev Up with Your Neighbors at the new Paul Miller Mazda Showroom

J

P Miller Jr., Owner and CEO of Paul Miller Motor Company, takes pride in a dealership “that takes the time and listens to the wants and needs of our clients,” with the goal of providing “100 percent client satisfaction.” He adds, “we also believe in supporting our local community, which is why we regularly give back to organizations and initiatives that assist those in our area who need help. Some of the organizations we support include God’s Pantry, Lexington Humane Society, Lexington Cancer Foundation, Kentucky Children’s Hospital, American Heart Association, Susan G. Komen Foundation, Lexington Fraternal Order of Firefighters and American Cancer Society. We’re proud to be part of the Lexington community.”

8 hamburgjournal.com | April 2022

Describing the history of the family business, he says, “We date the beginning of the dealership to the time my grandfather came to Lexington.” After serving in World War II, the senior Miller sold cars for a Charleston dealership, rising through the ranks quickly. In 1953, he got the nod to help open a Ford dealership in Lexington, becoming president and general manager. He later purchased six acres at 975 New Circle Road, near the intersection with Winchester Road. He hired Lexington architect Helm Roberts to design the building and its unusual roofline. The building itself soon became an attraction. Paul E. Miller, founder of Paul Miller Ford, died in June of 2014 at the age of 92.

The Paul Miller Mazda Retail Evolution Experience Last Spring, Paul Miller Mazda broke ground on a new building and Mazda showroom, located just down the street from its previous dealership, and recently opened the doors to the new space. The new Paul Miller Mazda Retail Revolution plans to “transform your dealership experience.” Miller says “Mazda makes some of the most dynamic automobiles that you’ll find on the road today,” adding that Mazda is “in the middle of revolutionizing our line of vehicles that will compete against the best the automotive industry has to offer in terms of performance, style, technology and comfort. We have an energetic, differentiated facility to display our vehicles in the Retail Evolution Program. But it’s time to kick it up a notch. The Mazda Brand is growing up, it’s time to rev up retail again.” Customers arriving at the newly designed Paul Miller Mazda are greeted by a large bank of video screens drawing the customer into a bold open entryway where a concierge desk greets them and anchors the technology-enabled Customer Lounge. The Showrooms have been divided into Studios which celebrate the vehicles. The signature vehicle lift is still positioned inside the Jewel Box. The Customer Lounge remains centrally located and comfortable with quick access to the Showroom, Sales, and Service. Integrated technology keeps customers informed on service and wait times, along with providing entertainment. Additional amenities include snacks and beverage stations, comfortable chairs and access ports for personal electronics.

Miller adds, “It is important to make the connection between sales and service, so the function of Service Write-Up has been included. This acts to place the same emphasis on service as on sales which reinforces the fact that Mazda stands behind the products they sell and brings the customer back to the same space in which they bought their vehicle.”

School calendar changes 2022-23

Fayette County Public School students and staff will enjoy a weeklong fall break in October 2022 under the revised 2022-23 instructional calendar, which the Fayette County Board of Education approved on Feb. 28, 2022. The change extends the next school year through Friday, May 26, 2023. Last fall, many Fayette County Public School parents reached out to Superintendent Demetrus Liggins about the district’s established practice of having a two-day fall break, suggesting a weeklong Fall break instead. A calendar survey was conducted and more than 68% of the nearly 8,000 people who replied favored the extended break. Also, given the choice between a week off in October or a week off at Thanksgiving, the earlier fall break was the most popular option.

Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League returns this spring

The Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League (TBML) announced today it will resume play this spring after being suspended during the pandemic. Opening Day will be played on Saturday, April 9 at Shillito Park and hosted by the Rotary Club of Lexington. “We are overjoyed for our players, families, coaches, and volunteers,” said Jim Jordan, Toyota Bluegrass Miracle League Board President. “Our upcoming season gives us all something to be excited about and thankful for.” This adaptive baseball league provides players, regardless of their ability, the opportunity to play the game in a safe, fun atmosphere. Each player dresses in an official uniform, and plays the game just like their peers with the help of a volunteer buddy. The game is geared to the ability level of each player. There are no barriers at the field and games are played on a synthetic surface for easy mobility. Since 2006, the league has been managed by the YMCA of Central Kentucky in partnership with a board of directors and countless community

partners who ensure children and adults with disabilities get a chance to experience the joys and benefits that come from playing baseball. The league serves over 150 players from in and around Central Kentucky, providing them not only with an outlet for their athletic endeavors, but opportunities for camaraderie, sportsmanship, and friendship.

Patients are asked to wear a mask throughout the entirety of their visit. If patients do not have a mask of their own, one will be provided. “Wild Health is expanding its ability to increase access to COVID-19 testing by meeting our patients where they live,” said Nicole Merz, Director of Clinical Operations and Training. “As an organization, we are committed to breaking down barriers to testing to ensure anyone who would like to be tested is given that opportunity.”

Did you Spring Forward…and Change Your Batteries?

Fire safety officials recommend that the Spring and Fall time change is an excellent reminder to check or change the batteries in your smoke alarms/ carbon monoxide detectors. According to the U.S. Fire Safety Administration, “Older adults have an increased risk of dying in a fire.” Those “ages 85 and older were 3.8 times more likely to die in a fire than the total population.” AARP reports, “Poor eyesight, hearing loss, arthritis, dementia and the side effects of medication

are among the factors that can make it more difficult for a person to react to a fire, officials say. ‘We have about two minutes to escape our home after our smoke alarms sound. We need to consider how these physical changes may affect our ability to escape quickly,’ says the Fire Administration’s Teresa Neal, a fire program specialist.” In Lexington, Kentucky fire safety is a priority, and the Lexington Fire Department’s Community Services Division is happy to assist our aging population when it comes to preventative measures like updating smoke alarms and changing batteries. The Lexington Fire Department Community Services Division, in partnership with the American Red Cross, will install 10-year lithium battery smoke alarms in all homes in Fayette County. The smoke alarms are free and will be installed by the Lexington Fire Department at no cost to the occupant. As part of the installation, the LFD will also conduct a fire safety inspection. To schedule a smoke alarm installation Contact the Lexington Fire Department via email at LFD-communityservices@lexingtonky.gov or call 859.231-5662.

PETS

Meet Oscar From Trash to Treasure

Oscar was found by Lexington’s Animal Control officers living in a trash can, hence the name. When the officer arrived, this sweet but timid dog would come up to greet her but then dart right back to the trash can. It took some time and lots of treats, but the officer finally gained his trust and

he allowed her to take him to Animal Control for temporary foster care before being transferred to partner organization, Lexington Humane. After no one came forward to claim this missing dog, the officers decided his name should be “Oscar,” after Oscar the Grouch. Oscar quickly became a staff favorite and he camped out at Animal Control for a few days. Staff even took him for a “day out” to his favorite place... sanitation. There he met a sanitation worker named Larry who let him get into his truck for a few photos. Even after he was safe and being officefostered, Oscar still guarded and climbed into trash cans around the office.

His name came solely from his love of trash because this guy is definitely not a grouch. Oscar had a rough start to life. He was underweight and covered in scars when he came into the system. While he is now receiving the best care possible thanks to the staff at LHS, Oscar will still keep some of those scars — some visible and some invisible. Lexington Humane is committed to finding the perfect adoptive home for him so that he’ll never live in a trash can again. Whether he was seeking shelter from severe weather or abuse, or if someone really did discard him like he was trash, that part of his story is behind him. Oscar is an affectionate boy who loves attention and is eager to make new friends. Hopefully, a reader will take him home and treat him like the treasure he is.
