The Toyota Effect Driving
the Future in Fayette County
Toyota USA Foundation will provide grants of up to $5.7 million to prepare students in Fayette County, Scott County, and the Ignite Institute in Northern Kentucky for future science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) careers. The Driving Possibilities initiative focuses on PreK-12 education to ensure all students have access to rewarding careers, including opportunities in the auto industry.
In Lexington, the program will involve Arlington, Mary Todd, Northern, and Russell Cave elementaries, Winburn Middle, and Bryan Station High School.
“Driving Possibilities is a profound commitment to the holistic development of our students, schools, and
the vibrant communities that embrace them. With Toyota’s leadership, we are embarking on a grassroots initiative to dismantle economic and educational barriers,” said Demetrus Liggins, superintendent of Fayette County Public Schools (FCPS). “Our unwavering goal is to cultivate opportunities for every student and family by dismantling obstacles. We look forward to this partnership and the impact it will have for generations to come.”
The long-term initiative’s phased approach, which offers programming in specific schools based on input from district leaders, aims to close educational gaps through innovative, hands-on STEM programming while addressing the essential needs of students and families. Driving Possibilities in Kentucky centers on three key areas designed to expand literacy and language resources, build education and industry partnerships, and address transportation barriers.
“Our goal is to increase awareness of future STEM careers while helping build sustainable programs in the communities where our Toyota team members live and work,” said Tellis Bethel, group vice president of social innovation for Toyota, whose largest manufacturing plant is in Georgetown.
“With $1.2 million in its first year and more to come in the years ahead, we are excited to expand Driving Possibilities here in Kentucky.”
In 2022, the Toyota USA Foundation announced Driving Possibilities, a $110 million national, career readiness and community engagement initiative. With efforts across the PreK-12 education continuum, the program is the largest and most comprehensive in Toyota’s history. The initiative is funded by Toyota USA Foundation, Toyota Motor North America, and Toyota Financial Services.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Air Quality
Declining air quality has been a persistent issue in the bluegrass this summer, caused by drifting wildfire smoke from Canada. Your smartphone weather app will provide a daily measure of air quality. If you are having trouble breathing or have a pre-existing lung condition such as asthma or COPD, have heart disease or are an older adult, child or teen, stay indoors as much as possible when air quality declines.
Everyone else should choose less strenuous activities, shorten the amount of time being active outdoors or be active outside when air quality improves.
Back to School Immunizations
Lexington Fayette Health Department’s Public Health Clinic can help with back-to-school immunizations for all grade levels, as well as COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 6 months and older.
Call 859-288-2483 to make your same-day appointment and learn more at www.lfchd.org.
Participants must be 18 years or younger and be uninsured or underinsured. Medicaid is accepted.
Immunization records must be brought to the appointment, and physicals will not be provided. A legal guardian must be present.
When children are not vaccinated, they are at increased risk and can spread diseases to others in their classrooms and community – including babies who are too young to be fully vaccinated, and people with weakened immune systems due to cancer or other health conditions.
Fayette County students who are new to the school district or are entering kindergarten are required to bring a Kentucky immunization certificate in order to enroll. Sixth-grade students and 16-year-olds are also required to have certain boosters and must bring an up-to-date immunization certificate.

Solarize Lexington Progresses
Mayor Linda Gorton joined in a celebration of the City’s sustainability program, Solarize Lexington, which has helped dozens of Lexington homeowners install solar panels. “Solarize Lexington has provided an amazing opportunity for Lexington residents to safely have solar panels installed on their home, at a discounted rate,” Mayor Linda Gorton said. “This sustainability program is helping homeowners reduce their dependence on the electric grid.”
The program, which provides a discount of up to 23 percent on the cost of installation of a solar energy system, is open to all homeowners in Lexington. Other property owners (non-profits, small businesses, places of worship) can also apply.
Solarize Lexington helps address the main challenges homeowners face when looking to switch to solar energy — finding a trusted and proven installer, finding the lowest price, and having a guide to walk them through the process. “The launch of Solarize Lexington in 2023 has proven to be a major step forward in community solar growth in Kentucky,” said Steve Ricketts, chair of the Kentucky Solar Energy Society. “Building on last year’s nationally recognized Solar Over Louisville campaign, Lexington has put a very strong focus on providing low-and moderate-income households equitable grant-supported access to renewable energy options. As a result, 38 of 58 new solar homes in this program have been for low- and moderate-income households. This firmly establishes Lexington as the defining regional leader in growing solar access for all.”
Solar Energy Solutions was selected as the local solar installer for the program. Jeffrey Nazarko, Vice President of Solar Energy Solutions says, “We are a Lexington-based business that has been operating and serving the residents since 2006.”
