BUSINESS

Lexington strengthens leadership in Logistics Longship, a third-party logistics provider, celebrated the opening of its new 29,000-plus square foot office in Hamburg. The new building represents a $4.3 million investment with a planned 155 new jobs. Longship’s leaders, including founder Kenny Ray Schomp, cut a ribbon at the company’s new 29,000-plus-square-foot office on Sir Barton Way. Relocated from its former operation on Newtown Pike, the larger office will accommodate additional staff to better serve the company’s growing customer base of transporters.

4 hamburgjournal.com | December 2021

“With its prime location at the crossroads of two major interstates, Lexington has had a logistics advantage for quite some time,” Commerce Lexington’s Bob Quick said. “The opening of Longship’s new expanded facility will not only add great-paying jobs for families across our region, but will also further strengthen Central Kentucky as a leader in logistics innovation. The pandemic showed just how important it was to continue delivering goods across the country, and that need has only increased since last year. Congratulations to Longship on this expansion, and we appreciate its investment in the regional economy.”

HSLC celebrated their Ruccio Way location with a November ribbon cutting. In June 2021, HSLC announced that it would acquire the two Lexington, Kentucky branches of German American Bank, a wholly-owned banking subsidiary of German American Bancorp, Inc. Hamburg is also home to a German American branch.

46 Solutions celebrated an anniversary with a ribbon cutting.

NEIGHBORHOOD

Lexington to allow ADUs

Councilmember David Kloiber

Mayor Linda Gorton

...And the Race is On: the Mayoral Race Hamburg Councilmember, David Kloiber, a firstterm councilmember for Lexington’s sixth district, has filed the paperwork to run for Lexington’s mayor in 2022. Kloiber is president of the Kloiber Foundation. He has helped fund projects for community improvement, primarily in areas that impact children including technology for area schools and construction of the Kloiber Pavilion at the YMCA in Hamburg.

6 hamburgjournal.com | December 2021

The 6th district is home to 17 neighborhood associations, nine public schools, Hamburg Pavilion, and seven city parks, including the Brighton Rail Trail, a shared use trail from Man O War Blvd, connecting to Pleasant Ridge Park and Polo Club Boulevard. The major corridors in the 6th District are Paris Pike, Winchester, Liberty and Bryan Station roads. Incumbent Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton has announced she will seek re-election.

Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) are smaller, secondary independent housekeeping establishments located on the same lot as a principal dwelling. ADUs are independently habitable and provide the basic requirements of shelter, heating, cooking, and sanitation. Imagine Lexington reports, “After a years-long process of research, development, and review — the ordinance allowing for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) has officially been passed by the Urban County Council! The Division of Planning conducted a large outreach and education campaign that focused on ADUs throughout 2019. The proposed ordinance, which was shaped significantly by public input collected during the outreach campaign, was unanimously passed by the Planning Commission in October 2019. From there, the ordinance was passed to the Planning and Public Safety Committee of the Urban County Council.” In September 2021, the ordinance was reviewed, with additional public input, and revised again. It was then approved by Council at the end of October 2021.

Car Seat Safety and the Lexington Fire Department

Councilmember Preston Worley

Seventh district councilmember Preston Worley has put together a video about car seat safety with the Lexington Fire Department. He says, “When my wife and I welcomed our first child into the world this fall, I knew I could call upon the Lexington Fire Department to make sure he got home safely and in a properly installed car seat through the LFD Car Seat Installation Program. The Lexington Fire Department offers free car seat installation and education to residents on how to correctly install car seats. As part of the process, the LFD also provides important information about child safety seat laws. You can schedule a tutorial with a car seat technician at several of our fire station locations throughout Lexington by calling (859) 455-SEAT (7328). There is so much to learn when becoming a parent and we are grateful for our village of supporters who have helped us navigate this new season of life. A special thanks to LFD for educating me on this important part of child safety.” You can watch the video here:

Hamburg Middle School delayed The Fayette County School Board of Education temporarily delayed their decision to award construction bids for Lexington’s forthcoming middle school on Polo Club Blvd in Hamburg. Fayette County purchased the 47-acre tract in 2020, with an anticipated open date of Fall 2023. The District reports that project estimates have soared 49 percent, to a new potential pricetag topping $70 million. Board members explained that the school build is suffering from the same escalating construction costs and supply chain issues that are plaguing all current construction projects nationwide. If delays and cost-increases persist, it’s possible the timeline projecting a Fall 2023 open date might have to be adjusted.

Healthy for the Holidays Getting to know our GFS neighbors

A

manda Goldman was a recent guest on Lexington’s Food News and Chews radio show, discussing health and nutrition. She is also a Hamburg Journal reader and neighbor, living near one of our favorite neighborhood treasures, Jacobson Park. Her current title is Healthcare Industry Sales Strategist for the corporation, Gordon Food Service (she doesn’t actually work at the Hamburg store). She’s a Registered Dietitian and a foodservice operator by background. “I attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio for my undergraduate degree, and then earned my Master’s Degree in Clinical Nutrition from the University of Kentucky. I also completed my dietetic internship at UK Hospital. Go Cats!” She explains, “I started in my role as the Healthcare Industry Sales Strategist (and yes, that is a lot of words) with GFS in the fall of 2019. Even though I live right here in Lexington, I am officially based out of our home office located in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In my position, I support our national healthcare team, and work with both our hospital and senior living customers. I help with developing strategies related to their food and nutrition services programs, as well as conduct evaluations of their departments to help improve their operations. I also have the opportunity to represent GFS in the foodservice industry, and attend and present at a number of national healthcare conferences. It truly is a lot of fun, and keeps me busy which I really enjoy.” She describes the local store “as an awesome place to shop! It is not a membership store, and anyone is able to purchase products there. We feature fresh meat and produce, delicious prepared foods, and many items that are helpful for when you are planning your next (holiday) party. We offer easy ordering and store pick-up too.” There is “no typical workday” for her, and she says, that’s “one reason why I love my job. I am never bored, and those that know me well, know that I like to stay active. I’m able to use many of the skill-sets I learned from when I worked at CHI Saint Joseph Health. Prior to my current job, I served in the role of the Director of Food and Nutrition Services, as well as the Director of Diabetes and Nutrition Care for many years.” Of course her current role — which typically involves a lot of travel — shifted to accommodate the pandemic. She says, “Within the healthcare field, there were and are continuing to be many changes and shifts that have occurred secondary to the pandemic. Knowing that, it is extremely important for us to stay up-to-date with current regulatory guidelines and food safety procedures. We have developed several resources that are available to our customers, and we communicate with them frequently. We share information regarding the supply chain, ideas to help with labor challenges, and can even provide educational presentations to help our customers run successful foodservice operations. I truly believe that one of the best services we offer to our customers is the vast array of resources we provide.”

Amanda’s Advice for Staying Healthy Through the Holidays Here are a few quick tips for staying healthy during the holiday eating season:

1. Plan before you eat – Scope out your menu options in order to make a healthy decision

2. Monitor your portion sizes 3. Avoid mindless eating – Be intentional about what you eat 4. Fill your plate with colorful foods including plenty of vegetables & fruits

5. Let children be part of the process – Encourage them to make healthy choices too

“I support our national healthcare team, and work with both our hospital and senior living customers. I help with developing strategies related to their food and nutrition services programs.” —Amanda Goldman, GFS

sked to name Hamburg’s biggest asset, she doesn’t hesitate, “Wonderful retail stores, delicious restaurants and great people. It really is a fabulous community!” For fun, she says, “I love to spend time with our family & friends. We have two children – our son is in eighth grade and our daughter is in fifth grade. He plays ice hockey and she is in gymnastics. I also love shopping, dining out, and traveling.” This is the most wonderful time of the year in the neighborhood. She says, “I really enjoy shopping in the Hamburg area during the holiday season. It is so festive, a little hectic, and fun all at the same time! Plus, so many local restaurants offer seasonal dishes, and I always like to sample those… with an occasional holiday cocktail of course. Cheers!” adding, “My favorite traditions are spending time with friends and family. It will be especially great this year as there are so many people we haven’t seen in a long time secondary to the pandemic. It will be wonderful to reconnect with them… in person.”

Holiday Light Collection Drive

From November 26, 2021 through January 16, 2022, residents can drop off broken or unwanted holiday lights, including string lights, rope lights and electric candles at partner collection sites throughout the city. Other items that can be dropped off include extension cords, timers, light sensors, power strips and other small electronics. Electronics, including holiday lights, should never go in recycling carts or recycling dumpsters. They cause damage to equipment at the Recycle Center and put employees at risk. The business drop off locations for this year’s holiday light collection drive will be announced in mid-November. Lights and other electronics can be taken directly to the Electronics Recycling Center year-round. The center is located at 1306 Versailles Road. Visit LexingtonKY.gov/eWaste for hours of operation.

Prevent Frozen Pipes Frozen water lines typically occur in areas such as crawl spaces or along the outside walls where unprotected plumbing tends to be more vulnerable to the elements. Here’s a few simple steps, from Kentucky American Water, to prevent your home’s water pipes from freezing this winter: • Disconnect garden hoses from your home. If you have an irrigation system, make sure it is turned off and drained. • Search your house for un-insulated water pipes, especially in unheated areas. Check attics, crawl spaces, and outside walls. Consider wrapping pipes with insulation sleeves. Another option is electric heating tape but follow manufacturers’ instructions carefully to avoid a fire hazard. • Seal cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations with caulking to keep cold air away from pipes • Drain and shut off entirely the water to any unoccupied residence such as a summer or vacation home. A loss of power during a winter storm could cause pipes to freeze.

• Set the thermostat no lower than 55 degrees if you’re going out of town. Although you may be able to get away with a lower temperature, this setting is safe for pipes. • When below-freezing temperatures occur, keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets supplied by pipes that run through unheated or unprotected spaces. This will help prevent the water in pipes from freezing. • Keep kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes. • Make sure you know where your main water shut-off valve is located inside your home so that you can shut off your water quickly in the event of a water pipe leak. This valve is often located in a utility room, closet or in the basement or crawlspace.
