LEGISLATIVE NEWS

Kentucky State Senator Ralph Alvarado is resigning his seat in the Kentucky senate to accept an appointment as Tennessee’s new health commissioner.

Per Kentucky law, vacancies in the General Assembly are filled with a special election. The date for a special election is set by the presiding officer or by the governor if the legislature is not in session.

Alvarado represented the 28th district which includes part of Fayette County and all of Bath, Clark, Menifee and Montgomery Counties.

FCPS Launches “Grow Your Own”

Fayette County Public Schools will offer “Grow Your Own” (GYO), an initiative that supports education-related career opportunities for FCPS

students, staff, and community members. The goal is to recruit, develop, and retain educators who are connected to the Lexington community and who share lived experiences with our students.

“FCPS is taking the next step through Grow Your Own to live out our mission and recruit the students, employees, and community members we need to build a workforce that truly represents Lexington and the students and families that we serve,” said Superintendent Demetrus Liggins. “We are excited to kick off what we believe will be a local solution to the national problem of recruiting and retaining talented educators,” he said.

The Grow Your Own program provides solutions for aspiring educators who face employment, financial, and other challenges, and it opens the way to a diversified workforce, stronger schools, and a connected community.

GYO pathways are available to four main groups:

• High school students exploring a career in education;

• FCPS employees interested in becoming certified to teach;

• Community members considering a teaching career; and

• FCPS educators and staff who want to grow into leadership roles.

“As we reimagine recruitment, support, and retention, the FCPS Grow Your Own program will advance the education profession to support student learning. This essential element will enhance our highly effective and culturally responsive workforce,” said Lori Bowen, director of educator development.

Vibrant partnerships with universities and organizations across the Commonwealth will empower GYO participants through scholarships, localized support and resources, and immediate practice in our schools.

LFD celebrates Fire Recognition

The Lexington Women’s Combat Challenge Team was recognized at the November 3rd Council meeting for their outstanding victory at the Firefighter Challenge World Championship in Sandy, Utah.

Mayor Gorton declared it “Lexington Fire Ladies’ Day” and recognized Firefighters Chelsie Brown, Erin Lucas, Sarah McGill, and Michelle Spanyer for winning the Female Relay Finals at the World Championship.

Brenda Cowan Fire Camp

Lexington Firefighters recently hosted the fourth annual Brenda Cowan Fire Camp. The camp was open to girls, ages 16-25, and focused on firefighting, EMS, and rescue skills.

“Historically, the fire service has not done a great job of marketing a career in firefighting to girls,” said Lexington Fire Chief Jason Wells. “This camp is

our way of bridging that gap and letting girls know they can pursue any career they want, including firefighting.”

Twenty-five girls are signed up to participate in the camp, designed to introduce them to a handson experience with the fire service, emphasizing sisterhood and empowerment. The day started with a meet and greet where the female campers got to know one another and asked questions about the unique challenges facing women pursuing a career in this male-dominated profession. Campers were also given the opportunity to advance hose lines, climb ladders, repel from ropes, and learn CPR and bleeding control basics. Wells reported the LFD has an authorized strength of 620, of which only 27 are female.

This free camp was named after fallen Lexington Fire Lieutenant Brenda Cowan, who was shot and killed in 2004 responding to an EMS call that turned out to be the scene of domestic violence. “Brenda was a role model for all, but especially young girls,” said Recruiting Battalion Chief Jordan Saas. “Naming this camp after Brenda was a fitting way to honor her memory and legacy.”

Soccer fields find a home in the neighborhood

The Governor’s Cup is always the talk of the town during Thanksgiving weekend in the bluegrass as UK takes on U of L in football. This year’s game saw the Wildcats taking their fourth straight win over the Cardinals in the annual matchup.

But Lexington was also consumed with another kind of football over the long holiday weekend when the U.S. fought England to a nail-biting draw on Black Friday in FIFA World Cup play. Local bars filled up with watch parties.

In 2021, the United Soccer League (USL) awarded the city of Lexington a League One expansion franchise. The Lexington Sporting Club is majorityowned by Tower Hill Sports and is slated to kick off its inaugural season in 2023.

Plans for an initial stadium home downtown, and later between Newtown Pike and Russell Cave Road, were revised.

LSC announced in the Spring that youth soccer programs currently associated with Lexington F.C. and Commonwealth Soccer Club would join and become Lexington S. C. Youth Soccer Club. Coaching assignments were released for Lexington Sporting Youth Soccer Club in the fall.

LSC sporting director Sam Stockley said at the time, “The youth program is the foundation of our club…There is so much excitement around the city and we are humbled by all the support shown by our community. Our goal is to win championships with our professional teams with up to 70 percent home-grown players, and every coach in our club has a part to play in that. We also understand that not all players will reach the professional team, which is why our program reflects the same level of coaching commitment through all four phases of the player pathway model. We are fully committed to providing a pathway for all players.”

Construction on Lexington Sporting Club’s recreational soccer fields has begun near the I-75 Athens-Boonesborough exit.

In October, LSC announced that Stockley had been selected as the first ever head coach for its inaugural United Soccer League (USL) League One season.

Stockley has served as Sporting Director since the Club’s inception, and says, “I’m extremely humbled by this opportunity, and very fortunate I’ve been able to be here at the start of this football club,” Stockley said. “To now have this opportunity to be able to be the head coach really allows the culture we have created to stay true to the alignment of what the vision was from the very start.”

In one calendar year, LSC has built a youth program featuring 1,400 players and nearly 100 coaches, which includes competition in elite leagues such as the Girls Academy and USL Academy. Each player trains under the same curriculum, regardless of age, allowing player movement throughout the Club and the opportunity for homegrown professionals.

This “academy” approach is utilized by the most successful soccer clubs around the world and will

change the access and opportunities granted to athletes in the area. With Stockley serving as head coach of the senior team, the LSC model will have unified leadership from the top down.

Vince Gabbert, President of LSC says. “Sam has already devoted countless hours building our program from top to bottom and has truly brought a holistic approach to Lexington where each player has a chance for success. [Sam] has been here to welcome new families in our youngest age groups; he’s helped players of former clubs adapt to their new home; and he’s introduced a pre-professional platform for male and female footballers that we haven’t had in this area before. The dedication he has exhibited toward the success of the club at every level makes him the perfect fit to oversee our first ever senior team.”

A native of Tiverton, England, Stockley enjoyed a professional playing career for nearly 20 years. Following his time on the pitch, Stockley gained experience as a coach and technical director throughout various levels in the United States and England. Stockley will remain the Sporting Director for Lexington.

Lexington will kick off its inaugural USL League One campaign next spring.

COLD AND FLU SEASON

Cold, flu, and RSV season is official here and this year, and cases are on the rise as holiday travel increases and mask use decreases.

“As we are going into the holiday season, several schools in the state have closed down because of these viral illnesses,” said Dr. Carl Seger, Vice President of Clinical Operations for Wild Labs. “We know that people are going to be around their families. Some of these family members could be at risk if they develop any of these illnesses.” Dr. Seger recommends before going to visit family and friends this holiday season, especially with young children or older adults, to get tested if you are feeling any respiratory symptoms.

Annual flu vaccines are available for those six months and older.

Dr. Seger added that “after being with family and friends this holiday season, before going back to school or work, we recommend getting tested if you have any symptoms. If we all work together, we can help decrease the spread of these three viral illnesses”.

Be Prepared

• Stock up on supplies. Load up on tissues, hand soap, hand sanitizer, and paper towels. Have extra masks on hand, as they’re proven to protect against the spread of viruses. Consider picking up a few distractions in case your kids get sick, like puzzles, coloring books, or DVDs.

• Check your medicine cabinet. Make sure it contains pain relievers, fever reducers, and any other medications you use when your family is fighting colds or the flu, like decongestants or cough syrups.

• Be strict about washing hands. Germy hands spread colds and the flu. Tell your family to scrub

their hands well with soap for 20 seconds. Tell kids to wash for as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice. Make sure you do it, too!

• Disinfect. You don’t need to spend all day spraying every surface with disinfectant. You may just want to disinfect some heavily touched items — like doorknobs, remote controls, and phones — each day.

• Switch to paper goods. If everyone’s sick, use paper towels instead of hand towels in the bathroom. Switch out glasses for paper cups and toss them after one use. You’ll be less likely to swap germs.

• Fill the fridge and pantry. Stock up on some easyto-make foods for lunches and dinners, in case you need a few days to rest and recover without cooking. Have some favorite drinks and snacks on hand for your kids. Include some (healthy) comfort foods like chicken soup and PB&J.

• Rest. Whether you’re trying to recover from a cold or flu, or trying to avoid it, get plenty of sleep. Get your kids to bed on time, too.

• Get your flu and COVID shots. One of the best ways to help keep the flu away from your home is to make sure your whole family gets vaccinated.

LOCAL AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

Saint Joseph Hospital and Saint Joseph East have received national recognition for several service lines, ranking among America’s 100 Best Hospitals in a number of areas and receiving top honors in others. The two facilities have received Five-Star ratings, according to new research released by Healthgrades, the leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients.

Saint Joseph East was named a Five-Star Recipient for its cardiac, pulmonary, gastrointestinal and critical care services. For the first time, the facility has also been named one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary InterventionTM in 2023 by Healthgrades. The facility is also among the top 10% in the Nation for Cardiology Services and Coronary Interventional Procedures.

“This recognition by Healthgrades is a testament to the dedication to quality care at Saint Joseph East,” said Kathy Love, president, Saint Joseph East. “Our providers and staff work every day with a goal of excellence in mind. We are pleased that their work is recognized once again by Healthgrades.”

Baptist Health Lexington and Baptist Health Richmond have earned the top rating of “A” for hospital safety for fall 2022 from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization.

The national distinction recognizes achievements in protecting patients from harm and error in the hospital. The two hospitals are part of the East Region of Baptist Health’s statewide family of hospitals.

“This recognition is a reflection of our continuing commitment to quality care,” said Chris Roty, president of Baptist Health Lexington. “The safety of our patients is the highest priority for our physicians and staff.” This is the 10th grade “A” in a row for the hospital.

“This is now our fifth consecutive “A” and I could not be more proud of our team at Baptist Health Richmond,” said Greg D. Gerard, president of Baptist Health Richmond.

Dementia-Friendly Designations

Bluegrass PACE Care opened in July of 2022 as the first Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly in Kentucky, and was recently awarded Dementia-Friendly Designation. The PACE program assisted aging Kentuckians to remain independent at home, by coordinating all aspects of participants’ care through a comprehensive team of clinicians and services provided in the home and at the PACE center.

“The designation of Dementia Friendly aligns with our goal of providing personalized care to PACE participants in our community, with the goal of being able to age in place at home. Our PACE team

is proud to have partnered with Dementia Friendly Lexington as we provide this specialized care,” Kathy Yates, PACE Center Director, said.

Donna Wilcock, PhD, of the UK’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging (SBCoA) was awarded a $1.7 million National Institutes of Health grant for her lab’s exploration of adverse effects of two new Alzheimer’s disease drugs. “The goal ultimately is to show data that will hopefully support a potential

adjunct therapy that could be used with these antibodies, that would make them safer for more of the population,” said Wilcock.

Wilcock is joined on this grant by colleagues affiliated with UK’s Sanders-Brown Center on Aging: David Fardo, PhD, and Yuriko Katsumata, PhD, both from the College of Public Health; and Joseph Morganti, PhD, from the College of Medicine.

There currently is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Wilcock says drugs like aducanumab and lecanemab that slow disease progression are critically important as they help to provide some hope for those living with dementia and their families.
