“In the early 1970s, leaders CALL TODAY TO of the City ADVERTISE Commission and Fayette ads@hamburgjournal.com County Fiscal 859.268.0945 Court chose to take the innovative path forward to merge,” Mayor Linda Gorton said. “The work of these leaders has helped prevent duplication of services, and promoted efficient local government. I am excited to celebrate, 50 years later, the continued progress of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government.” In Kentucky, most residents live in areas where there is a local county government and one or more separate city governments.

Listen to your

HEART It could save your life

H

eart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The term “heart disease” refers to several types of heart conditions. In the United States, the most common type of heart disease is coronary artery disease (CAD), which can lead to heart attack. You can greatly reduce your risk for heart disease through lifestyle changes and, in some cases, medicine. February is American Heart Month, a time when all people—especially women—are encouraged to focus on their cardiovascular health. In 2024, we get 29 days to celebrate awareness — it’s a leap year!

This Heart Month, the Division for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention (DHDSP) is encouraging women to listen to their hearts and speak up for their health. Women in the United States are experiencing unacceptable and avoidable heart-related illness and death, and nearly half of U.S. women do not recognize that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women. Help the women in your life listen to their hearts and raise their voices. When we encourage women to protect their own hearts, they can help others in their communities protect theirs.

Know the Risks

Heart Attack Symptoms

High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. About half of people in the United States (47%) have at least one of these three risk factors. Several other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at a higher risk for heart disease, including • Diabetes • Obesity • Unhealthy Diet • Physical inactivity • Excessive alcohol use

If you notice the symptoms of a heart attack in yourself or someone else, call 9-1-1 immediately. The sooner you get to an emergency room, the sooner you can get treatment to reduce the amount of damage to the heart muscle. At the hospital, health care professionals can run tests to find out if a heart attack is happening and decide the best treatment.

The major symptoms of a heart attack are • Chest pain or discomfort. Most heart attacks involve discomfort in the center or left side of the chest that lasts for more than a few minutes or that goes away and comes back. The discomfort can feel like uncomfortable pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain. • Feeling weak, light-headed, or faint. You may also break out into a cold sweat. • Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, or back. • Pain or discomfort in one or both arms or shoulders. • Shortness of breath. This often comes along with chest discomfort, but shortness of breath also can happen before chest discomfort. Other symptoms of a heart attack could include unusual or unexplained tiredness and nausea or vomiting. Women are more likely to have these other symptoms.

KIDS AND FAMILIES

Snow Complaints

Lexington Councilmembers received multiple complaints in January regarding Fayette Co. Public Schools calling a post-storm NTI Day for students, due in part to area road conditions. Every fall, the City meets with area partners in preparation for snow season. FCPS is invited to that meeting along with Lextran and several divisions within LFUCG that have a role in snow and ice removal. Those partners also receive a copy of the snow plan in advance of the presentation to Council. At that time partners are asked if they think the city needs to make changes to the plan including how the roads are ranked. Councilmembers reported that the City did not receive a response from FCPS for this school year on proposed changes to the plan so the plan moved forward as it was presented. If there were gaps in the road rankings concerning the bus routes, the city did not have a way to determine those gaps other than to ask FCPS to review and comment. In addition, FCPS noted the following regarding their need to have NTI days and expressed that some of the challenges stem from factors beyond the immediate control of both FCPS and LFUCG.

10 hamburgjournal.com | February 2024

e

FCPS bus routes extend to areas where there are private roads, parking lots in mobile home parks, and apartment complexes, which are not cleared and fall outside the city’s responsibility. Many neighborhood streets were only partially cleared due to parked cars, making it difficult for their large buses to navigate. Commissioner Albright expressed, “We can do better.”

HOME AND GARDEN

Avoid the Freeze January’s polar vortex led to extra headaches for homeowners in the form of frozen water pipes. Since winter is far from over, a few tips may help avoid future damage:

• Disconnect garden hoses from your home. If you have an irrigation system, make sure it is turned off and drained. • Search your house for uninsulated water pipes, especially in unheated areas. Check attics, crawl spaces, and outside walls. Consider

wrapping pipes with insulation sleeves. Another option is electric heating tape, but follow manufacturers’ instructions carefully to avoid a fire hazard.

HG CALENDAR

• Seal cracks and holes in outside walls and foundations with caulking to keep cold air away from pipes. • Drain and shut off the water to any unoccupied residence, such as a summer or vacation home. A loss of power during a winter storm could cause pipes to freeze. When frigid temps hit, follow these tips: • Set the thermostat no lower than 55 degrees if you’re going out of town. Although you may be able to get away with a lower temperature, this setting is safe for pipes. • When below-freezing temperatures occur, keep a slow trickle of water flowing through faucets supplied by pipes that run through unheated or unprotected spaces. This will help prevent the water in pipes from freezing. • Keep kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes. • Make sure you know where your main water shut-off valve is located inside your home so that you can shut off your water quickly in the event of a water pipe leak. This valve is often located in a utility room, closet or in the basement or crawlspace.

FEB 24 Cincinnati Home & Garden Show extends for two weekends this year — the last weekend in February and the first in March.

FRI FEB 23 Property Taxes: The Sequel

In December 2023, many Fayette County residents received a second property tax bill in addition to the one they received in the fall. This bill is identifiable by a red notice on the front of the envelope and was mailed by the Office of Sheriff Kathy Witt, who collects property taxes. The bill represents an additional balance due for 2023 on property taxes approved for residents who have streetlights and garbage collection provided by the City. The City increased these taxes to cover the rising cost of providing these services while slightly decreasing other property tax rates. The bill includes an insert specifying how to pay, where, and when to pay to earn a discount or avoid penalties.
