BUSINESS
Business is Booming
Beginning a new fiscal year offers an excellent opportunity to reflect on the last one, and despite national headlines, business is surging in Kentucky. S&P Global Ratings and Fitch Ratings has upgraded Kentucky’s financial outlook to positive in recognition of the commonwealth’s surging economy. Site Selection Magazine placed Kentucky at 6th in its annual Prosperity Cup rankings for 2022, which recognizes state-level economic success based on capital investments.
TECH Funai Lexington Technology Corp.’s (FLTC) planned expansion in Fayette County includes an investment of over $3.8 million. Additionally, the company plans to hire skilled workers in the areas of sales and marketing, chemical engineering, life science engineering, materials engineering and semiconductor process operators.
4 hamburgjournal.com | July 2022
Commerce Lexington Inc. President and CEO Bob Quick is appreciative of the company’s continued commitment to Lexington, saying, “The Commerce Lexington economic development team enjoyed working with Funai in 2013 to help find a home for their R&D facility in Lexington, and it’s been wonderful to see the transformation of the company since that time.” He adds, “Today, Funai Lexington Technology Corp. has grown to 47 full-time employees with plans to increase that number over the next year. The additional capital investment and jobs will not only help the company expand its capability, but also demonstrates Funai’s confidence in Lexington as a great place to do business. Lexington’s Orb Technology was one of seven Kentucky companies selected to receive nearly $900,000 in state matching grants to support highpaying jobs and further grow the state’s technology industry. The $899,070 in grants are part of Kentucky’s nationally recognized Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Matching Funds Program. The funds, in part, will match $8.71 million in federal grants the businesses will collectively receive.
ORB Technologies is developing a panelized construction system for passive and zero-carbon buildings. The system is designed to simplify the process of building high-performance building envelopes, reduce builder risk, reduce building ownership costs and has the potential to draw down atmospheric carbon dioxide by storing it in the building materials. The system is made of rapidly renewable biomass crops that can be grown on marginal land, including reclaimed strip mines. ORB Technologies plans to manufacture the building materials in Kentucky.

NEIGHBORHOOD
Grow Smart In June, the city broke ground on a new East Sector Roll Call station, the first roll call station outside of New Circle Road and Man O’ War. Councilmember Kathy Plomin says, “I am proud to have the East Sector Roll Call Center located now in the 12th District. The new site will be surrounded by vibrant neighborhoods and, of course, Veterans Park. It will be a welcome addition to the area.” “Keeping public safety in mind is paramount in planning for our City’s future,” Police Chief Lawrence Weathers said. “This new facility improves accessibility for our growing East Sector, and provides updated features to our offices and our citizens.”
Grow Smart Academy is a free, four-week program designed to educate Lexingtonians on land-use planning and its relationship to our community’s economic development, environment, and quality-of-life. Want to learn more about how land-use impacts your daily life from public transit, walkability, housing affordability, greenspaces, our climate impact, and where you live, work, and play? Join Grow Smart Academy to hear about these local issues with experts. Alumni are encouraged to register. In order to receive a completion certificate, you must attend all four sessions in their entirety. Dinner is provided at each session. Register at Fayette Alliance.

VisitLEX is thrilled that this stunning piece of property on the banks of the Kentucky River will become a park open for all to enjoy.” Councilmember Kathy Plomin, who represents the riverfront area, said, “My husband and I have a kayak and can’t wait for our inaugural voyage down this beautiful venue of the Kentucky River. To Lexington, Kentucky, another feather in our cap!”
Take Me to the River
In late May, the city announced plans to purchase 30 acres on the Kentucky River, the only public access to the river in Fayette County. The city has signed an agreement of sale for the property with John Kelley, whose family has owned the property for decades. The property is located off Old Richmond Road, near the I-75 bridge into Madison County. Mary Quinn Ramer, President of VisitLex, Lexington’s Convention and Visitors Bureau, said the new park will be an opportunity to establish a new kind of regional tourism with other river counties. “The growth in outdoor recreation and adventure

SAFETY FIRST In the U.S. each summer, more than 200 injuries a day and millions of dollars in property damage occur due to the misuse of fireworks. The Lexington Fire Department and Lexington Police Department urge citizens to use caution and follow the law when celebrating with fireworks.
Anyone found in violation of the local fireworks ordinance will be cited by the Lexington Police Department.
• Spectators should keep a safe distance from individuals lighting fireworks. • Do not carry fireworks in pockets. • Do not drink alcohol and handle fireworks. • For emergencies, always call 9-1-1

The number one thing to remember about fireworks law is if it goes up or blows up, it is illegal in Fayette County. • The only fireworks allowed to be sold or used in Fayette County are ground and hand-held sparkling devices, such as sparklers, ground spinners and fountains.
PROHIBITED • All aerial and audible ground devices, such as bottle rockets and firecrackers, are prohibited in Fayette County. LFUCG’s fireworks ordinance provides complete information on local fireworks law. State law KRS 227.702 provides detailed definitions on all types of consumer fireworks.
Fireworks safety tips
• Only buy fireworks from a licensed store or stand. • Follow directions on firework packaging. DO NOT combine different types or light multiple fireworks at a time. • Never allow young children to handle fireworks. • Only use fireworks outdoors and away from buildings and vehicles. • Never re-ignite malfunctioning fireworks. • Do not throw sparklers or fireworks at people. In keeping with the trend of expanding healthcare in Hamburg, UK HealthCare announced plans to enter a purchase agreement to initially acquire about 27 acres of property for approximately $20.3 million in the Hamburg development along I-75. “Our mission is to advance Kentucky in everything that we do. Fight the Bite
This summer, the LexingtonFayette County Health Department plans to control mosquito populations in the community by bringing increased focus to eliminating standing water and preventing mosquito larvae from hatching. This includes free mosquito larvicide, available by visiting the
Environmental Health office on the second floor of the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department, 650 Newtown Pike, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday. Supplies are limited. Educational materials will be provided. The department will also use mosquito trapping to identify areas where spraying for adult mosquitos would be most useful. The health department has surveyed Lexington neighborhoods to identify and treat large areas of standing water that can serve as prime locations for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. Elimination of standing water is the ultimate goal, but in places where puddles exist, the water can be treated to kill mosquito larvae with a chemical called a larvicide. The health department will no longer conduct routine mosquito spraying for adult mosquitoes throughout the city on a regular cycle. Instead, mosquito traps will be placed in potential problem areas. If a certain threshold of mosquito activity is reached, the department will conduct targeted spraying in the appropriate areas. Those areas will be announced via the health department’s website, www.lfchd.org, and social media pages. For spraying, the health department uses Duet, an EPA-approved agent that features a component that stimulates resting mosquitoes in trees and foliage,
causing them to fly into the air and come into contact with the spray’s mosquito-killing agent, sumithrin. Duet has been rigorously tested for human and animal safety and is registered for outdoor residential and recreational areas. Lexington residents can also take steps at home to fight mosquitoes: • Mosquito-proof your home and yard. Fix or install window and door screens. Mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water. Cover or eliminate empty containers with standing water. Limit the number of places around your home for mosquitoes to breed by getting rid of items such as tires, buckets, barrels and cans. Refresh the water in your pet’s water dishes and birdbaths at least every five to seven days. • Be aware of peak mosquito activity times. The twilight hours around dusk and dawn are times of peak mosquito activity. Use insect repellent when outdoors especially during peak activity times, including early morning hours. Look for EPAlabeled repellents containing active ingredients, such as DEET, Picaridin (KBR3023) or oil of lemon eucalyptus (p-menthane 3,8-diol). Apply repellent according to label instructions. When weather permits, wear long sleeves, long pants
and socks outdoors. Mosquitoes can bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with repellent containing permethrin or another EPA-registered repellent helps prevent bites. To report a standing water problem in your neighborhood, please call the health department’s Environmental Health section at (859) 231-9791.

Art in the Yard
Lexington is seeking submissions for Art by Nature: Front Yard Friends, a celebration of our local environment. This exhibit brings attention to front yard landscaping. Eight sites from across Fayette County are featured. Visual artists of all types — painters, photographers, fiber artists, jewelry makers, sculptors and more — are encouraged to participate. The deadline for artists to declare their intent to exhibit is Saturday, July 30. The Art by Nature program is in its fifth year. The initiative showcases local native landscapes as represented by local artists. The inaugural year focused on local greenways and streamside restoration projects. were created by EARTHeim Landscape Design, and are available for free from the City, LexingtonKY.gov/ PlantByNumbers. The exhibit is Friday, August 26 through Saturday, September 24, at the Loudoun House. Artists of all levels are welcome to participate by submitting up to three pieces. Participants are guaranteed only one spot in the show. Works are for sale, though an artist may choose to opt-out of that aspect of the program. Ten percent of proceeds will benefit Celebrate Lexington, formerly known as America in Bloom Lexington. Artists keep the remainder.
“Front yards can be one of the most underappreciated spaces in urban environments, yet they provide a number of benefits,” says Nancy Albright, the Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Quality and Public Works. “The Art by Nature series always results in an amazing array of art, and I’m looking forward to seeing this year’s exhibit.” The City is planning a series of art and nature events in conjunction with the exhibit. Details on those events will be announced in early August. The artist’s intent to participate form, map of featured locations and other information can be found atLexingtonKY.gov/ArtByNature.
The City of Lexington offers Fayette County residents a free trash disposal day for nonhazardous household waste.
