e was always destined to be a champion. Royally bred, with English and American classic winners in his pedigree, Sir Barton shone from birth, dubbed the “king of them all.” But after a winless two-year-old season and a near-fatal illness, uncertainty clouded the start of Sir Barton’s threeyear-old season. “Sir Barton and the Making of the Triple Crown” by Jennifer S. Kelly, a new book from University Press of Kentucky, chronicles this history-making thoroughbred’s ride to the top. Sir Barton’s surprise victory in America’s signature race, the Kentucky Derby, started him on that road to history, where he would go on to dominate the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, completing America’s first Triple Crown. His wins inspired the ultimate chase for greatness in American horse racing and established an elite group that would grow to include legends like Citation, Secretariat and American Pharoah. After a series of dynamic wins in 1920, popular opinion tapped Sir Barton as the best challenger for the wonder horse Man o’ War and demanded a match race to

settle once and for all which horse was the greatest. That duel would cement the reputation of one horse for all time and diminish the reputation of the other for the next century — until now. “Sir Barton and the Making of the Triple Crown” is the first book to focus on Sir Barton, his career and his historic impact on horse racing. Kelly uses extensive research and historical sources to examine this champion’s life and achievements. She charts how Sir Barton broke track records, scored victories over other champions, and sparked the yearly pursuit of Triple Crown glory. This book reveals the legacy of Sir Barton and his seminal contributions to thoroughbred racing 100 years after his pioneering achievement. Kelly is a lifelong horse racing fan using her experience as a writing instructor and technical writer to chronicle and preserve the history of her favorite sport, especially the Triple Crown. “Sir Barton and the Making of the Triple Crown” is her first book. Local readers can learn more about this new book from Kelly at this month’s Kentucky Proud Evenings, presented by the Fayette County office of the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. The free monthly series celebrates the state’s rich literary culture with author discussions and samples from Plate It Up! Kentucky Proud recipes. “No preparation or prior reading is required. This is the perfect way to kick off Derby season. Jennifer Kelly is passionate about thoroughbred racing and promises to be an interesting speaker,” said Liz Kingsland, Fayette County family and consumer sciences extension agent.

Kitchen Letter from Principal Williams of Brenda Cowan Elementary School Dear BCE Family, I wanted to take a moment to update you on our building’s progress. With more than half of the building already complete, Brenda Cowan Elementary School will be ready to welcome students, families and staff on the first day of school on August 14, 2019. But since 2018 was Lexington’s all-time wettest year since 1870, there still may be some construction happening on campus. Although contractors have been hard at work, it rained roughly six out of every 10 days last year, which had an impact on their progress. By the end of 2018, Fayette County had received at least 26 inches of rain more than usual over the course of the year. When school starts in August, roughly 80% of the building will be ready for occupancy. The good news is we don’t need those other rooms to serve the number of students we’ll have our first

April 2019

year. (Remember that Brenda Cowan Elementary is being built for 750 students to accommodate future growth, but we only anticipate having 500 students our first year.) In the picture to the right, you can see what areas will be complete. These spaces include the classrooms, resource rooms, kitchen, cafeteria, gymnasium,

media center, support spaces and administration areas. The exterior parking lot will be ready, as will the bus and car-rider drop off and pick-up areas. The remaining classroom wing will be finished in September. Contractors will be working in areas D and E after school starts, but the wing is divided by doors, which will make it easy to separate the construction area from the students and staff. The work win not be noisy or impact instruction. We’ll continue to Keep you updated on the progress of our building and look forward to hosting open houses this summer! The next Community meeting is 5 to 8 p.m. at Crossroads Church in Andover, 4128 Todds Road on May 21. Thank you for your continued support, Joshua A. Williams Principal Brenda Cowan Elementary

This aerial view of the building shows where construction may still be taking place for about a month after2019 the first day of school. April The areas of the building marked A, B, and C — including the classrooms needed for the projected student enrollment, resource rooms, kitchen, cafeteria, gymnasium, media center, support spaces and administration areas — will be complete before the school year begins. The exterior parking lot will be ready, as will the bus and car-rider drop off and pick-up areas .

May many celebrate Bike to Work Week and Bike to Work Day being that Friday. Lexington has become a bike friendly environment and has created trails, clubs, and establishments where like-minded people can go.
