BUSINESS they’ve taken advantage of years of low interest rates to finance an expansion that is designed to make them a power across the Southeast.” Richmond approved 415 new business licenses in 2021. Buc-ee’s serves as an anchor for Richmond’s Duncannon and Industrial Park area.

Buc-ees Means Business

Exit 83, just a few miles down the road on I75, at Richmond was transformed in April when Kentucky’s first Buc-ees opened. Customers were already lined up at the door at 5 am when the store opened slightly ahead of schedule a little before 6. Richmond Mayor Robert Blythe, who’s served as mayor since 2018, characterized their recent job fair, filling hundreds of positions, as an economic development “phenomenon.”

A 2017 Forbes article says “The quiet success of Buc-ee’s—Forbes estimates that the privately held company had revenue last year of $275 million—is based on several shrewd decisions. Owners Arch Aplin III and Don Wasek have targeted an affluent market segment—they don’t discount, and they don’t allow commercial trucks at their gas pumps. They have nurtured the cult-like following that has grown around their brand. They’ve fattened their margins with lots of private-label merchandise. And

Remembering Bill Gatton

UK spokesperson Jay Blanton said of legendary businessman Bill Gatton, “I think Bill Gatton is one

of the most important people at the University of Kentucky perhaps in our history. He was an incredible philanthropist,” in addition to being a prominent UK alum. UK head basketball coach John Calipari said, “One of the best supporters of our university, Bill Gatton, has passed. A visionary who was so charitable to causes close to his heart, his name is on our student center and College of Business and Economics. He was a kind, generous man who did so much.”

WRIGLEY SNEAK PEEK Wrigley Media hosted a sneak peek event of Wrigley Woodhill Studios in April, with building completion expected to be early 2023. Wrigley Woodhill Studios will be a state-of-the-art studio

with facilities and capabilities to house feature film, television, and commercial productions in a way that Kentucky has never been able to — until now. At approximately 52,000 square feet, Wrigley Woodhill Studios will be the largest studio facility in Kentucky. It will house three soundstages, indoor/ outdoor control room and satellite hook ups, multiple star dressing rooms, wardrobe and prop storage, parking for nearly 100 cars, and ample production offices. Wrigley Miller has chosen the site of what was once the Woodhill Cinemas to build out this facility in an effort to breathe new life into a once abandoned building, and to bring renewed energy to the surrounding Woodhill neighborhood.

ummer is approaching, lightning bugs will soon fill our backyards, and that means camps for the kids. Two years into the pandemic, camp options have increased extensively for 2022. Whether your child wants to participate in a sport, academic, or art camp, Lexington has what you need. Here is a sampling of camp options for kids of all ages throughout the Lexington area.

experienced faculty and talented college students multiple times each day. Students will get a five-day, college-like experience that includes all food, lodging, supplies, evening activities and hands-on exploration of an academic area in the context of a Christian community. Tanner Fouts is serving as Camp Director at Asbury’s ImpactU 2022 this summer. He says, Growing up in Lexington, Kentucky, Asbury University had always been on the outskirts of my life. When my brothers chose Asbury for college, it became part of their story. Now it is my turn. Camp has always been a big part of my life. From attending camps in my younger years to creating new camp experiences today, I love camp! The opportunities for personal growth, life long friendships, and the best memories of your life are limitless. Fun fact, it was camp that led me to being a professional Chick-fil-A cow and the job I have today.”

accreditation with the American Camp Association, assuring guests of the highest levels of quality and safety for camp facilities and programs.

CAMP KESEM Camp Kesem is a child’s friend through and beyond a parent’s cancer. Throughout the school year, the Kesem team fundraises to send children ages 6-18 who are affected by a parent’s cancer to a free week-long summer camp. This is a student-run organization that welcomes members from all backgrounds. Camp Kesem holds a special place in HJ’s heart, as our late designer, Kellee Edwards, was fortunate to send her daughter Kate there to make special memories in the summer of 2017. Kellee wrote at the time, “Kate calls it cancer camp. It’s Camp Kesem for kids whose parents have cancer. After 10,021 hugs and 27 pep talks (some to Kate, some to me), she’s off, and I’m really gonna miss her. We’ve practiced taking showers and getting the

shampoo rinsed out of her hair for three weeks now, and I’ve been assured someone will help her comb it. I bought two of everything on the camp list (maybe three bug sprays if you count the one that rolls on). I bought her all new underwear and socks, and I have enough matching shorts and T-shirts for three weeks. I let her pick a twin comforter and sheets to be known as ‘camp bedding.’ It’s minty and navy, very Kate. No pink for miles; sequins approved. We have a shower organizer, product containers, new toothbrushes (in case one gets lost) and fresh strawberry kids’ toothpaste from Lucky’s. We’ve pulled out all the stops. The list said she could bring a musical instrument. Kate has three: a Mexican drum, a maraca and a recorder. She was allowed to bring a disposable camera. I sent two, plus one for underwater. I sent maze books and stickers and a journal and different colored pens. Thank God the camp prohibits taking snacks. I don’t know how John would’ve carried the mini-fridge up that hill. “But I offer no apologies for my overdone behavior. This could be my life’s equivalent of sending my daughter off to college, so it was a really big deal. We’ve never been away from each other for this long; we’ve barely ever been away from each other at all. I suspect she’ll come back older and wiser. I suspect

this is good for both of us. She was so excited. She will be just fine. After all, it’s only a week. Me? I suspect I’ll be chained to the front porch by Wednesday to curb my compulsion to go get her.”

CAMP SHALOM A typical camp day at Camp Shalom could include arts and crafts, music and movement, martial arts or yoga, swimming or park visits, field trips or a special guest, games and more.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Happy Anniversary

The Center for Weight Loss Surgery at Saint Joseph East is celebrating two decades of patient service. The program began on April 16, 2002, on the Saint Joseph East campus. “Gastric surgery is a treatment that gives new life to those who have experienced ineffective weight loss through diet and exercise alone,” said Kathy Love, president, Saint Joseph East. “Anyone who has participated in weight loss surgery can attest that it isn’t just about losing weight, but also about eliminating the related, and often chronic, health problems that come with a higher body mass. We’re proud to have provided this resource to the community and look forward to serving many more patients for years to come.” Karen Hillenmeyer, BS, PA-C, director, Bariatrics, CHI Saint Joseph Heath, has been with the center since it opened in 2002. “When we began the program 20 years ago, I never imagined that we would have changed the lives of such a vast

number of patients,” she said. “The years of increased life expectancy in these individuals is immeasurable.”

Baptist Recognized

Aaron Thompson, PhD, chair of the Baptist Health system board of directors, is among the class of Modern Healthcare’s Excellence in Governance award. Each of these outstanding directors exemplifies the qualities of excellence in governance: loyalty and service; strategic and innovative

vision; and commitment to fostering the values of accountability, diversity, equity and sustainability,” said Fawn Lopez, publisher of Modern Healthcare. “They are invaluable assets to the organizations and communities they serve and to the advancement of healthcare. We congratulate and thank them for their leadership and dedication.” “Dr. Thompson’s extensive background in education, advocacy and diversity has made him an invaluable leader for Baptist Health during a very challenging time,” said Gerard Colman, PhD, Baptist Health president. “He has been an advocate for health equity and quality healthcare across the Commonwealth who has helped to shape Baptist Health’s strategic focus on access, quality and growth to meet the needs of patients. “During his system board tenure, Baptist Health has successfully navigated a pandemic, improved access to high quality care and shown strong financial performance.” Aaron Thompson, PhD

Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls is an oddball, romantic comedy taking the audience from the heart of Times Square to the cafes of Havana, Cuba, and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

PETS

The KenPuppy Derby Run for the Roses at the Woodford Waddle

B

egin Derby Day this year with the most exciting race of all: Woodford Humane’s Waddle for the Roses! Eight adoptable puppies will don their silks and hit the turf for their shot at glory. Place bets, play games, compete for fanciest hat, and of course take in the race! The best part? You’ll still have plenty of time to get ready for that *other* derby, so you can enjoy both! The Kenpuppy Derby is a family-friendly affair with fun and games for both puppy lovers AND horse lovers! Don’t miss the Puppy Hot Walks. Meet your adoptable racers! Check out their style, feistiness, and energy level for important betting purposes; pet and snuggle them for joy purposes. Puppies will be hot walking with their Animal Care Provider buddies from the Adoption Center up until the 11:00 post time. OK, it’s not really a high-stakes affair. But you can still win a little something! Place your trifecta bet for just $2; if you correctly guess the first three finishers in the right order, you’ll win a gift card to your choice of Starbucks, Target, or Amazon!

Break out your finest Derby Day headwear. Is it stylish? Elaborate? Classy? Silly? Insane? Wear it. The winner will receive a comically large ribbon and a photo op with the fastest puppy in the Winners’ Circle.

For the Kids (and Childish Adults), there will be Stick Horse Races. Choose your pool noodle pony and satisfy your need for speed! Run as many races as you like - they’ll be available throughout the event, except for during the Derby itself. Forgot your derby hat? There will be a make-andtake arts and crafts Derby hat option. Sparkles, ribbons, glitter, feathers, and more await. Go nuts! Mint juleps aren’t allowed on county property but Katie’s Happy Hot Dogs will be there, and Spotz Gelato will serve their special Kentucky Pride flavor that’s sure to remind you of a certain derby-season favorite dessert. Follow Woodford Humane on facebook and insta right up until race time for late breaking news and workouts. Hopefully, no one scratches.
