Lexington Grocery Legend leaves memorable legacy

Walt Barbour, 73, died in October after battling cancer. Barbour was an iconic figure in Lexington’s grocery industry, having run Randall’s on Romany. He was affectionately known by many as the mayor of Romany. When it was purchased, his fans held Randall’s Rallies, and carried “Save Walt” signs outside the store.

He went on to run a popular pantry market and deli on Liberty, known for its famous fried chicken, which reportedly lives on across town.

An October graveside service was held at Camp Nelson, with full military honors, in recognition of his service in Army Intelligence during the Vietnam Era.

Million Dollar Investment Lands in Neighborhood

Vector Corrosion Technologies Inc., which provides corrosion mitigation products and services, cut the ribbon on a new operation in Lexington, creating 20 full-time jobs with a more than $1 million investment.

The Winchester Road location is the Canadabased company’s first U.S. manufacturing facility.

Vector located its first Kentucky operation in an existing 15,200-square-foot building at 800 Winchester Road in Lexington. In addition to acquiring the facility, the new-location project includes purchasing manufacturing equipment and other startup-related costs. Jobs created at the facility include supervisory, quality control, shipping and receiving and production line roles.

“The ceremonial ribbon cutting is an exciting event for Vector as we continue to gear up quickly to bring Kentucky-made corrosion solutions to extend the life of critical infrastructure throughout the country,” said Bob Spriggs, Vector CEO.

“The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and its engineering consultants have expressed their support for the expanded use of cathodic protection technologies in the commonwealth and

we are anxious to move forward quickly to support local jobs,” added Chris Ball, senior vice president at Vector. “In addition to supplying domestic projects, we have also manufactured some cathodic protection systems for export to Brazil.”

Vector has provided concrete repair and corrosion solutions to extend the life of infrastructure for the past 50 years.

Vector adds to Kentucky’s manufacturing sector, which employs 250,000 people across approximately 5,000 facilities.

Commerce Lexington Inc. President and CEO Bob Quick welcomed the opening of the new facility. “We are very pleased that Vector Corrosion Technologies calls Lexington home, and we appreciate their continued investment and confidence in Central Kentucky,” Quick said. “We are honored that this innovative company has opened its very first U.S. manufacturing facility right here in Central Kentucky. We look forward to many great things from Vector Corrosion Technologies in the future.”

Vector’s investment and planned job creation furthers recent economic momentum in the commonwealth, as the state builds back stronger from the effects of the pandemic.

Site preparation and construction is expected to begin soon for a luxury apartment community in its place.

The buyers, Hills Properties of Cincinnati, also developed Greyson on 27 in Nicholasville, which includes amenities like a Bark Park, a saltwater pool, and garage parking.

Hamburg Middle School on Track

Plans for a Hamburg area Middle School are back on track after a long delay. The middle school on Polo Club Boulevard was originally slated to open in 2023, but Covid-cost increases temporarily shelved the project.

The Polo Club Middle School is expected to welcome students in 2025, and the project is expected to cost approximately $82 million. According to FCPS, “The construction of a new middle school in the rapidly growing Hamburg area along the I-64 and I-75 corridor is the final remaining project from the 2017 District Facility Plan. ‘The Hamburg area continues to see rapid residential construction and expansion,’ said Chief Operating Officer Myron Thompson. ‘With the Baptist Health facility on Polo Club Boulevard already under construction, additional housing development is anticipated to follow.’”

ConGRADulations Firefighters!

Lexington’s newest firefighters graduated from Recruit Training in October. The 32-week academy prepares new firefighters for the challenges they will face as part of the Department. “I am very proud of these recruits and the effort they’ve given,” said Training Battalion Chief Jordan Saas. “They have trained hard, met the standard, and are ready to serve the community.” The training covered a wide variety of topics new firefighters will face in their

positions, including certifications as Emergency Medical Technicians, Firefighter 1 and 2, and Hazardous Material Awareness and Operations. There are 32 recruits graduating to the rank of Probationary Firefighter. Their probationary period will last for one year from the date of graduation, during which time they will be assigned to a truck, receive on-the-job training, and continue to study and pass tests related to their new position.

Located near Hamburg, the new Fountain Court Primary Care Clinic offers a full range of preventive and routine care and treatment for common illnesses for the entire family, from infants through adults.

“Making health care more accessible, especially for patients in Central and Eastern Kentucky, is our key goal,” said Mark F. “There is clearly a need for both primary care and urgent care in the area,” said Randy Jones, MD, medical director at UK HealthCare –Fountain Court. “This clinic will provide many patients and their families access to high quality, comprehensive medical care, delivered by some of the most trusted health care providers in the state.”

The clinics at Fountain Court will have their own on-site lab and pharmacy, opening soon.

New in Town!

If you love Lexington’s Miyako concepts (and who doesn’t?), there’s even more good news for Lexington’s Asian Cuisine Scene. Miyako owner Andy Chi has opened a ramen and donburi concept, Zundo Izakaya in the former Outback space on Tiverton, just off Nicholasville Road. (Outback left the space for new digs at Fayette Mall in 2019.)

One superfan reports that Zundo’s “sushi chef was an apprentice chef for two years at a two-star Michelin restaurant in NYC, and that explains so much.”

The menu includes ramen, Japanese BBQ skewers, sushi, and poke bowls.

Chrisman Mill Winery Closes

Chrisman Mill Winery hosted their final events in October, after sunsetting the business.

The owners announced they would be closing after 25 years of winemaking, adding, “We have decided to slow down a bit and move back to Texas, and although we have tried for the past year to find new owners to take our little experiment forward, we just have not been successful at doing so.”

Things wound down “just the way we started” at the Jessamine Fall Festival in downtown Nicholasville.

Remaining wines and spirits may be available for sale online for a limited time.

The Winery once operated a popular tasting room and shop in Hamburg on Sir Barton.

The promise Tammi made to Hank on the day she found him was to provide a lifetime of love, comfort and care for him and any other horses in need that found their way into her heart and barn. To date, Hank has inspired the rescue of more than 80 other horses. If he wins the America’s Favorite Pet contest, Hank and

his Mom Tammi, plan to reinvest the $10,000 honorarium into the communities they serve.

Do You Have the Tree?

Do you have a large evergreen tree that is nicely shaped that you want removed from your property? If so, consider donating it for the city to use for Lexington’s holiday season celebration.

City officials will evaluate all trees and select the two chosen for the city Christmas trees. If your tree is chosen, the City and Kentucky Utilities will coordinate with the property owner to remove it in early November. There’s no financial compensation, however removal of the tree and stump grinding is free.

The chosen trees will be placed in Triangle Park and in front of the KU building on Quality Street. They will be decorated and lit Sunday, Nov. 27, as part of the Holiday Lighting Festival. The trees should be Norway Spruce, Colorado Blue Spruce, or Douglas Fir, and be: 40 – 50 feet high 20 – 25 feet wide

Access must be provided with a clearance of at least 10 feet in width, with no power lines growing in the trees.

There should be no other obstacles, such as buildings that may prevent access Must be able to back a low-boy trailer up to the tree and place KU trucks on either side.

Property owners should call LexCall at 311 or Victoria Hamm at (859) 277-8703 if they want to donate a tree and will be contacted by the city if their tree is chosen.

Campaign sign collection is scheduled for November 9 thru Nov 20, 2022. Signs are reused for craft projects. Metal stakes that are unable to be used may be recycled as scrap metal.
