Step up October is Lex on the Move By Kristina Rosen
T
his is the month to ‘Move It” thanks to Lex on the Move, the Lexington Area Metro Planning Organization’s October initiative to encourage local area businesses to engage in active commuting. The challenge asks participating companies and their staff members to “step up” to find healthier, greener ways to commute to work in October. Whether that’s to simply walk, share a ride with a coworker, hop a bus or a bike. 79 percent of Lexington Area Residents report driving to work alone as their primary means of commuting. This October initiative hopes to raise awareness about solo driving and the alternatives.
BUSINESS The more active a workforce is throughout the month, the better their chance of redeeming the benefits and good publicity while the most active individuals receive company perks or incentives provided by employers. But the bottom line benefits to businesses are worthwhile regardless of the rewards from the challenge. How so? Regular physical activity can lead to a healthier, happier, more engaged staff, increased employee retention, fewer sick days, more camaraderie, enhance workplace culture, attract millennials, reduce stress, increase productivity, and reduce parking demand. Did you know that 30% of trips are under 2 miles in Lexington? As of now, Lexington has over 100 miles of bike lanes and shared use trails with more than 218 miles on the way. Lex on the Move is an initiative sponsored by the Lexington Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.
Unfamiliar with an MPO? It is a transportation policy-making group of representatives from local, state and federal government, transit agencies, transportation providers and other local stakeholders. Urban cities with more than 50,000 people must designate an MPO to conduct transportation planning activities. The Lexington Area MPO works to ensure that transportation projects and programs are based on local priorities and mutually agreed upon goals. Mike Sewell, who serves as the Project Manager for the Town Branch Commons Project, was surprised with how well the Lexington Area MPO and LFUCG functions together. “From the get-go LFUCG exhibited a lot of coordination which is unusual for a municipality. They tied it to the overall vision of the community and worked well with the Lexington Area MPO. It was refreshing to see how well the city functions in a managerial capacity.”
Interested in joining the movement? Businesses and organizations can head to the Lexington Area MPO website to sign up. Offer your employees the plan and provide incentives to participate. (Results will be submitted at the end of November.)
We move people to serve their community.

Think Pink
A Têtê a Têtê with Dr. Andrea Colton, MD, MPH
A
t the forefront of a wide spectrum of women’s health matters, none are more ubiquitous during the fall as breast health and breast cancer. This is a subject Dr. Andrea Colton, MD, MPH of Lexington Clinic knows all about. Dr. Colton is the only fellowship trained breast surgical oncologist in the city and helps give women with this disease a fighting chance. We had the pleasure of sitting with Dr. Andrea Colton at Lexington Clinic Center for Breast Care, talking about breast health and Think Pink! Q: Tell us a little about yourself. A: I began my career by getting my Bachelor of Science at the University of Kentucky and completing my internship at Einstein Memorial Medical Center. I went to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Pennsylvania to complete my residency, and I finished my fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern in Breast Surgical Oncology, specializing in Breast Surgery. I care for both malignant and benign breast disease processes. I perform nipple sparing mastectomy, skin sparing mastectomy and partial mastectomies with oncoplastic techniques. Q: What brought you to the field of medicine? A: It was in third grade when my grandfather faced some serious health concerns and I became intrigued by the medical field. As I visited him in the hospital, that’s when I knew I wanted to be a surgeon. It was during my residency that I knew I wanted to become a Breast Surgeon. I rotated through various surgical programs, but gravitated towards breast surgery. Q: Talk to us about some of the cutting-edge procedures that you do? A: Sure. The first is Localization. When a malignant mass or calcification is detected, I go in and place a Radio Frequency Identification Tag (RFID Tags). This technology allows me to find exactly the precise location within the breast that I want to remove. So instead of using a wire to find the mass, a small object is placed in that area and is FDA-approved to stay in the body indefinitely. This device makes it easier for me to find that location in future exams and to know where to look for other possible masses. It can also reduce
10
the incidence of patients needing to return to the O.R. Having identified the target area, we can then direct the chemotherapy to a specific spot in hopes of killing all cells. If the cancer cells are eliminated, the need for additional surgeries is significantly reduced. The second procedure is Biozorb. This allows radiologists to see precisely where the cancer once was and allows the radiation oncologist to give patients more precise radiation whenever they undergo whole breast radiation with the boost. Another cutting-edge process employed at Lexington Clinic’s Center for Breast Care is Kubtec technology. It’s a 3-D mammogram machine that essentially does tomosynthesis and provides a scan of the breast tissue, similar to a CT Scan. The picture slices it from top to bottom with one-millimeter slices, which allows me to look at each slice individually. This allows me to identify things more easily and be more precise in patient procedures. Q. What do you like about your job? A: The best part of my job is when patients come to me after their surgery and I can tell them that ‘You are a SURVIVOR’….that’s the best feeling. I’m also a hugger….I love getting to know my patients personally and being there for them through their journey. Q: How important are mammograms for women? A: Mammograms are extremely important. Breast cancer does not always appear as a lump, and the cancers that are found on routine screening are much smaller on average than cancers that are discovered in women who do not participate in regular screening, and only see their doctor once they have developed a breast lump. Q: What is the one myth about mammograms that you’d like to dispel? A: One common misconception I hear often is that mammograms aren’t necessary unless there is an issue or you discover a lump. We need all women to do their mammograms by the age of 40 and for mammograms to become part of their regular screenings thereafter. While the majority of Center for Breast Care patients are those with breast cancer, patients here are also treated for a variety of breast health concerns, including benign lumps, breastfeeding issues, skin changes, and more.
I
n talking with Dr. Colton about the pioneering technologies and procedures underway at Lexington Clinic Center for Breast Care, now more than ever, Central Kentucky is poised to bring awareness to the disease and in the fight against breast cancer – and to pack a serious punch.
SUPPORT
The Center for Breast Care hosts a regular support group once a month for those with breast cancer. They meet on the second Tuesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. For more information, call 859.258.4932

Living well starts with diet By Bret Anderson

hamburgjournal.com | October 2019
just turned 50 years old. By 50, most of us have been punched in the face by a myriad of life’s issues: Parent issues. Kid issues. Career and financial issues. Relationship issues. And certainly, health issues. We’ve earned quite a perspective with the first fifty. I’m passionate about making my next fifty super high quality. To do that, I must start with health because we all know the variation on , “if you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything.” Passionate about health I’ve been racked with autoimmune and degenerative issues. Allergies to many foods (and related digestive issues), dust, mold, trees, and grass. Diagnosed with hypothyroidism 15 years ago, sciatica ten years ago, Bell’s Palsy five years ago, knee surgery early this year, and tennis elbow last week … and I don’t even play tennis. But I feel I’ve gotten off lucky so far. My parents, not so much. Last month marked the seventh anniversary of my mom’s passing. She died at 68 from congestive heart failure. For years before she passed, she suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis. My Dad has had multiple sclerosis since 1966. He’s struggled through a series of other challenges the last few years including a left leg amputation, a heart attack resulting in seven stents, and right leg bypass surgery (which became infected, and he nearly lost it too). Just brutal. All said, he’s doing “good” today. What have I learned? Good health starts with a good diet. I’ve found three keys:
1. Intermittent Fasting: eat in an eight-hour time frame (noon to 8pm) 2. Don’t exceed 50 grams of “net carbs” per day (total carbs minus fiber) 3. Target 5 cups of vegetables and 25 – 38 grams of fiber per day Sound hard? This is harder… “Punch you in the face” stats: · 79,535 deaths occur EACH YEAR caused by diabetes · 30+ million diabetics in USA today Seeing loved ones unable to enjoy the basics of life has led me to a passion fighting for health. I’m on a mission to help those around me to be healthy, live with vitality, and slow the aging process. Rage Against the Machine We all need to quit eating empty calories like high fructose corn syrup, sugar, and refined flour. We all need to stop eating chemicals like pesticides, herbicides, and Yellow #5. Drink Your Vegetables For me, I’ve found one of the easiest (and tastiest) ways to get full nutrition in a convenient method is a healthy smoothie. The challenge is that it can take a while to learn how to make it and sometimes even more time to clean up. Once you get the rhythm down, it’s like clockwork. My favorite super dense, smart nutritious smoothie is made with kale, blueberries, chia seeds, protein powder, and coconut milk. If I can’t make them myself, I’m careful when I order them out, because so many smoothies contain a ton of sugar. The good people at Jump Start Smoothies have agreed to feature this smoothie for the month of October. Try one. Bret Anderson is a husband, father of three, and compete health nut. Her name means “remembrance.” Lastly is Sampson, a male Yellow Labrador. His name means “service” and “sun.”

Meet Cathy Davis Your Neighbor to Know in Real Estate By Claire Ramsay
W
ith Lexington being the Horse Capital of the World, it’s no wonder there’s a whole niche of bluegrass real estate dedicated to selling farms. Our neighbor, Cathy Davis with Kirkpatrick & Co, knows all about selling farms in the central Kentucky area. Cathy grew up in Ashland, Kentucky and spent her childhood surrounded by farmland. She would ride horses and get into mischief with her two older brothers. She would later make Lexington her home when she moved from Ashland to attend the University of Kentucky. Cathy would try many adventures throughout her life — she raised thoroughbreds, owned a women’s clothing boutique and a Bed & Breakfast — but it wasn’t until 1996 when she decided to try real estate and get her license. She grew up in a family filled with salespeople and that particular brand of hard work was instilled in her. Cathy enjoys getting to know her clients and trying to find that perfect place for them to call home. Why specialize? She says, “I think my niche is the farms. I know land, grasses, I know the areas in central Kentucky.” She’s earned that niche. One time she and a fellow realtor were out in a field and noticed something headed their way. It was a bull. The area they ran to for their escape unfortunately had no cell service. They were pinned down in that spot for three hours. There are always memorable moments when it comes to working in real estate. One of her favorite real estate memories is of selling a farm in Cynthiana. A 200-year-old log home sat on the property, but it was the history of this property that really sticks with Cathy all these years later. The story goes that a tribe came onto the property and
took two young boys from their family. The mother gathered all her possessions and set out to try to find her two sons. She was able to find the tribe who took them, but could only bring back one son. “This just reminds me how strong women
are...a fascinating story about her going to find the tribe and get her sons back.” Some of her real estate memories hit a lighter note. She tells us about the time she was supposed to pick up a client she’d never met on the way to show a property. Somewhere along the drive, she found out she picked up the wrong person. On a personal level, Cathy is most proud of her family, particularly her three children. Zach owns Kirkpatrick & Co, Olivia is an interior designer, and Mercedes is a school teacher at Mary Queen. For anyone interested in getting into the real estate business, Cathy has two words for you, hard work. “A lot of people don’t realize it, but it is a lot of hard work.” She recommends that anyone starting out in real estate should be prepared to work 24/7 and be on-call for clients 7 days a week.
“I love when I sell a home to a first-time home buyer.” As much as she loves the sprawling horse farms and estates, one of her most rewarding experiences is when she helps a first-time home buyer find their perfect starter home. “They are the most grateful, appreciative, they are so excited.” Also, after being in the real estate business for over 20 years, the children of her clients are coming to her to help them buy their own home. Moments like these remind her of why she began this career in the first place. She loves to show and list properties in the Hamburg area/east side of Lexington, and never finds it a hard sell for her clients. The reason? “It has everything. You’ve got the interstate, great restaurants, great shopping, just the accessibility of having everything in one location.” Prospective buyers and sellers can reach Cathy at Cathy@movetolex.com or by phone at 859.806.9444. hamburgjournal.com | October 2019
