Maxwell Griffin
Graduate Surveyor
I joined Fisher German in August 2021, working as part of the Infrastructure Planning Team, based in the Ashby office. Life at FG has been an excellent start to my career as I am continually involved in significant infrastructure projects which constantly provide new challenges and learning opportunities. In addition, there is a fantastic people culture with lots of social opportunities and events.
My day-to-day work is highly varied and involves highlighting constraints and the planning requirements at the start of projects, preparing and submitting planning applications and going on site visits across the country. This requires me to liaise with numerous stakeholders including Local Authorities, Design Engineers and Ecologists to achieve planning permission for a wide range of infrastructure projects on behalf of a variety of utility clients.
I am now halfway through completing a part-time MSc in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Birmingham. This is a crucial step to becoming a chartered member of the RTPI. On completion of my MSc I look forward to making use of the graduate team who will provide specialist guidance and support leading up to my APC submission.
After completely my first year at Harper Adams University where I was studying an RICS Accredited degree, I joined Fisher German in Summer 2018 to carry out a summer placement in the Rural team in the Stafford office. Since then, I have also undertaken a year’s sandwich placement in the infrastructure department and now work within the minerals department as a Graduate. Fisher German providing me with the flexibility to gain experience in a range of departments has allowed me to gain an insight into the wider surveying industry, helping me decide on the direction I wanted to go with my career after graduating.
My day-to-day role comprises of both the management of private estates across Derbyshire and corporate estates including companies such as Biffa and the Harworth Group, this role provides me with the opportunity to regularly visit a range of sites ranging from quarries to farm holdings. The range of properties I am involved with means that no one day is like another. During my placements and my current graduate job, I have consistently had a network of support around me, with individuals always willing to give up their time to help with both my APC and my day-to-day job. A structured training programme is in place, including regular meetings to check on your progress, this structure provides you with the best possible chance of success allowing you to progress within the firm.

Placement Student
I started my placement with Fisher German in July 2021, and I have absolutely loved my experience so far. Everyone has made me feel so welcome and a part of the team. I joined Fisher German because of their excellent professional reputation, the support, and the high level of expertise that they offer to their APC candidates. I feel that my placement has really helped me put what I have learned in a classroom at university in to practice, an experience I think is going to really benefit me going into the final year of my degree. Day-to-day I work besides the building consultancy team, assisting them in a wide range of projects from dilapidation disputes, contract administration, party wall awards and condition surveys on a range of residential and commercial properties.
I am particularly enjoying the balance between being on site and in the office, working with various clients such as The Duchy of Lancaster, The Environment Agency and Tarmac and seeing projects which I have assisted on in the office come to life. I would recommend any placement student to select Fisher German as their level of support and varied experience opportunities make working at Fisher German an enjoyment and also a great opportunity to expand on knowledge and confidence.
I joined the Canterbury office in March 2022, specialising in Infrastructure Services and I was pleasantly surprised with how welcoming everyone was. They made me feel very comfortable despite having no previous experience in this industry as I graduated University with a degree in Business and Marketing Management.
Fisher German’s graduate programme is crucial to its success as a business. This was evident even in the interview process, as it was conducted by Senior Partners, including the Managing Partner. I have been very impressed by Fisher German’s commitment to developing members from the graduate programme as well as providing us with an abundance of resources and training events.
I enjoy that this role is diverse, flexible, people-driven and regularly allows you to be out and about on a range of rural properties.
