Welcome to the Sullivan Catskills Situated in the foothills of the Catskill Mountains just 90 miles northwest of New York City, we are a rural county with 968 square miles of rolling hills, flowing rivers, crystal-clear lakes, and unparalleled beauty. FACTS: Sullivan County lies in the southern part of New York State, southeast of Binghamton and southwest of Albany. It is separated from Pennsylvania by the Delaware River. Just 90 miles northwest of NYC, Sullivan County offers the best of both worlds— convenient access to major metropolitan areas and a relaxed, rural lifestyle. Sullivan County is made up of 21 municipalities. That includes 15 townships, six villages which are divided into eight school districts. The county’s name is in honor of Major General John Sullivan, who was a hero in the American Revolutionary War. From the 1920s through the ’70s, hundreds of resort hotels dotted our landscape. TOWN OF BETHEL The Town of Bethel, which includes the hamlets of Bethel, Briscoe, Kauneonga Lake, Smallwood, White Lake and parts of Mongaup Valley, is the geographic center of Sullivan County encompassing 93 square miles of rolling hills, farmland and natural landscapes. We’re home to Bethel Woods Center for the Arts at the historic site of the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival which drew nearly half a million people in 1969. Today, Bethel Woods offers a diverse selection of culturally-rich performances, popular artists, and community and educational programming. The 800-acre campus includes an 15,000-seat amphitheater, an intimate 440-seat indoor Event Gallery, the awardwinning Museum at Bethel Woods, and a Conservatory for arts education programming.

The hamlets of Kauneonga Lake and White Lake are on a 286-acre motorboat and fishing lake and a hub for lakeside dining and community events. The Forest Reserve at Smallwood, a 120-acre park, is protected by an agreement between the Bethel Local Development Corporation and the Delaware Highlands Conservancy. You can enjoy hiking, birding, snowshoeing and outdoor exercise, Lake Superior State Park offers swimming, fishing, kayaking and opportunities for winter recreation. The town also operates a park with playground, walking trails and picnic areas. Bethel has an active volunteer base including three volunteer fire departments, a volunteer ambulance corps, Lions Club; Girl Scouts, 4-H, and VFW. Bethel Parks and Recreation offers year round programming and activities along with an enriched summer camp and community garden. The beautification group Bethel First, a vibrant Council of the Arts, an active Business Association, and a healthy community steering committee are all engaged with promoting opportunities for community wellness.

TOWN OF CALLICOON
The Town of Callicoon is rolling hills, rich history, creative people, farm fresh and includes the hamlets of Callicoon Center, Jeffersonville, North Branch, Youngsville and the Village of Jeffersonville that collectively encompass just under 50 square miles in the western portion of Sullivan County.
We’re rich in active community groups including four volunteer fire departments and an ambulance corps; Lions Club; Chamber of Commerce and the volunteer beautification group the Jeffersonville JEMS. Our interests and attractions are as diverse as the people. Every Wednesday in the summer the historic Callicoon Center Band entertains with “polkas, waltzes, and hits of fifty years ago that
come blaring and bouncing out of the thirty member band.” On the other side of town, in the Village of Jeffersonville, is the year round sound of WJFF radio – hydro powered and run almost exclusively by volunteers. The Village of Jeffersonville serves as a crossroad to several hamlets and main streets; connecting a vibrant agricultural community offering an abundance of fresh food.

TOWN OF COCHECTON The Town of Cochecton is a small, quiet, scenic part of Sullivan County. Cochecton’s fertile flats (“Cushetunk” as it was called by the Indians meaning “low lands”) abounding with fish, fur and game and its proximity to the Delaware River, which led to Philadelphia, made it a natural for a permanent settlement. Our Town is comprised of 38.06 square miles making it the second smallest town in Sullivan County. It includes the hamlets of Cochecton, Cochecton Center, Fosterdale, Lake Huntington, and Skinners Falls. The Town of Delaware consists of the hamlets of Callicoon, Hortonville, Kenoza Lake and Kohlertown. We’re is a diversified area ranging from flat valleys with pristine views of the Delaware River, to rolling hills offering panoramic vistas. Delaware features many amenities including a range of dining, shopping, the Villa Roma Resort and access to the Delaware River. The Scenic Byway Route 97 passes through the hamlet of Callicoon. The people of the Town of Delaware are what make the town unique. The human spirit and level of caring and concern people have for each other, their neighborhood and their community is extraordinary. There is a strong volunteer
base in the fire department, Business Association, Kiwanis, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. The Delaware Youth Center is a community space that offers educational programming and recreational activities for all ages throughout the year. It also houses a year round farmers market that moves indoors from the Callicoon Creek with the change of season.

Callicoon hosts several signature events including the annual Tractor Parade, the Callicoon Country Fair, an 5K in Summer, the Art Walk in Autumn and Dickens on the Delaware in December.

TOWN OF FALLSBURG Fallsburg offers a balanced quality of life, recreational opportunities and municipal services to a vibrant year round, seasonal and second home community. We encompass 79 square miles and include the hamlets of Fallsburg, Glen Wild, Hurleyville, Loch Sheldrake, Mountaindale, South Fallsburg, Woodbourne, Village of Woodridge. The Neversink River runs through the Town of Fallsburg and played an important part in its early development. The Town has just over 4 miles of trails for walking and bicycling. The section of the O & W Rail Trail includes segments from Mountaindale to Woodridge and from Woodridge to the Neversink River. The trail is well-maintained and on level terrain with flowerbeds, a variety of views, and wetlands with excellent areas for bird-watching. Highlights include a
Visitor’s Center in Mountaindale with a display of historical railway photographs, artifacts, a new scale train sculpture, rest areas and stretching equipment. Our sense of community is exemplified through local participation in action committees, 6 volunteer fire departments, an ambulance squad, senior clubs, Kiwanis Club and several beautification groups that have worked to create vibrant public spaces and community events. Fallsburg is home to SUNY Sullivan, two lakeside parks and two PGA golf courses. Morningside Park features a 125 acre lake allowing electric motor boats, fishing and birding opportunities. The hamlet of Hurleyville is a developing walkable community and is home to the Hurleyville Makers Lab as well as the Hurleyville Arts Centre, galleries and artist spaces.

FORESTBURGH PLAYHOUSE
TOWN OF FORESTBURGH Forestburgh, the smallest of the Sullivan County towns, is set amidst abundant forests and peaceful lakes and includes the nine mile Swinging Bridge Reservoir. The beautiful and natural surroundings offer hiking, bald eagle viewing, cross country skiing and other opportunities to connect with nature. We are home to the Forestburgh Playhouse. Founded in 1947, the Forestburgh Playhouse is the oldest continuously operating professional summer theatre in New York State. Under an agreement with the Actors’ Equity Association, the union of professional actors and stage managers, the Playhouse employs professional actors, often with Broadway or other major credits, as well as a company of non-union professionals who earn credit toward their own eventual membership in the Actors’ Equity Association. The Forestburgh Playhouse operates from mid-June through Labor Day. The Forestburgh Tavern hosts a Fall Series during weekends from September through the end of October. The Fall
Series features, bands, cabarets, comedy, special events and caps off the year with our annual live performance of the Rocky Horror Show! Other unique aspects of Forestburgh include Merriewold Park, famous for residences of playwriters; stage and screen actors and actresses and Sho Fu Den, the Japanese palace brought here from the 1939 New York’s World Fair by Dr. Takamine, chemist and inventor. There are 15 historical markers throughout our town denoting its past along with a 150th Sesquicentennial depicting their path as well as other interesting historical and town facts.

TOWN OF FREMONT The Town of Fremont is nestled in the western corner of Sullivan County, alongside the Delaware River, and offers beautiful scenery—rolling hills, grassy meadows, pure mountain streams, towering woodlands and abundant wildlife. The hamlets of Long Eddy, Fremont Center, Hankins and Obernburg make up the which is served by both the Roscoe and Sullivan West School Districts. Tennanah Lake Golf and Tennis Club sits on over 1,000 acres on the highest point in Sullivan County. The par 72 layout has three sets of tees and will play almost 6,800 yards from the back tees. In addition to the wondrous and bountiful natural resources in Fremont, our town also provides excellent opportunities for entrepreneurship and business ventures. THE ROEBLING BRIDGE
TOWN OF HIGHLAND The Town of Highland was first inhabited by the Lenape, who enjoyed the bounty of the Delaware River. Others were drawn to Highland because of its streams, lakes, dense hardwood and conifer forests and wild game. Today, the town is comprised of Barryville, Eldred, Highland Lake, Minisink Ford and Yulan. Situated along the Delaware River, Barryville, offers eagle watching, outdoor and waterfront activities, and many dining options. Several liveries offer camping, a zip line, rafting, kayaking, and canoeing. The Barryville Area Arts Association, and the Greater Barryville Chamber of Commerce are active throughout the year and include Plein Air painting and the Pumpkin Fest.

Eldred hosts the Town Hall, Senior Center, Sunshine Hall Free Library, Peck’s Supermarket, churches, restaurants, and several businesses all within walking distance. Nearby is the Hickok Brook Multiple Use Area, featuring rugged hiking, and other outdoor activities on its 1,064 acres. Located beside its namesake, Highland Lake offers residential and natural beauty with public lake access. The North American Cultural Lab (NACL) Theatre is a performing arts focal point and provides many opportunities for diverse entertainment. The Upper Delaware’s only major Revolutionary War battle was fought at Minisink in 1779. The Minisink Ford Battle Ground hosts a Visitor Interpretive Center with 57 acres, offering hiking, a picnic area and restrooms. The Roebling Bridge is a short drive away– designed and built by John A. Roebling, who later engineered the Brooklyn Bridge. Yulan offers a quaint residential community, with Konrads Restaurant just a short walk from the post office. Community gardens dot the entrance into Yulan, and are a source of pride for the Town’s beautification efforts. TOWN OF LIBERTY The Town of Liberty offers excellent schools, outdoor recreation and an escalating business climate. We’re a great place to live, play and do business. The Town encompasses the Village of Liberty and the hamlets of Parksville, Swan Lake, White Sulphur Springs Our housing options and available land, along with a walkable downtown of shops, restaurants, groceries and an award winning school district, make Liberty an attractive option for families. We offer an active Parks and Recreation Department with yearlong family friendly events, lakes and public swimming pool. There is plentiful open space and parkland for outdoor recreation including Walnut Mountain which features state ranked mountain biking trails. There are 2.5 miles of rail trail in downtown Liberty and just over 3 miles in Parksville which is also home to Beaverkill Studio—inspired by nature, and fueled by state of the art technology to shoot, edit and screen.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County is located in our Town. It combines local experience and research, developed with community input, and based on the most current information available from Cornell and other Land Grant universities from across the nation. The Liberty campus features a hiking trail, greenhouse, hoop house and commercial kitchen. Lumberland has a rich history, including the Delaware and Hudson Canal, the summer mansion of Singer Sewing Machine President George McKenzie, and the scenic Delaware River paralleled by the RT 97 Scenic Byway, all within commuting distance to the Tri-State and Delaware Valley region. One of the best ways to enjoy Lumberland is to canoe the Delaware River from the various bases on the banks. Hiking and biking abound with fun restaurants and bed and breakfasts for short or long rests. On the way stop at the many historical markers and the Lumberland Town Hall and Museum Room-ask for our brochure. We have a series of quality Cultural Concerts at the Town Hall (call 845856-8600 #1222 for details) and the Summer Youth Program is available in July (contact the Youth Director at the Municipal Building)
Our community is proud to support the Lumberland Fire Department and Auxiliary, the Lumberland Cultural Series Board, The Lumberland Branch of Sullivan First, our Parks and Recreation Department, Senior Citizens and churches. TOWN OF MAMAKATING The Town of Mamakating–Gateway to Sullivan County. Mamakating is where history meets adventure. We embrace and enjoy our rural heritage and take responsibility for environmental stewardship. The Town of Neversink partially located in the Catskill Park, features one of the county’s most beautiful landscapes, offering natural beauty and a multitude of recreational activities within the Neversink and Rondout Reservoir areas, including fishing, hunting, non-motorized boating, and hiking. Volunteerism abounds and has been an integral part of the building of the Daniel Pierce Library and Time and the Valleys Museum, the creation of a local farmers’ market, and The Townsman newspaper, which has been in existence for over 60 years. We have two fire departments and two volunteer ambulance squads, along with a Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Neversink Renaissance beautification group, Antique Tractor Club, and Neversink Agricultural Society. The Town of Neversink Chamber of Commerce was recently organized to advance the general welfare and prosperity of the Tri-Valley area. The beautification efforts of Neversink Renaissance have brought many resources to the municipality making the town a more
beautiful place. Barn Quilts of Neversink offers a self-guided tour to view over 75 barn quilts. An Old time Fair takes place every July, followed by the Little World’s Fair in August, Tractor Show and Sportsmen’s Flea Market in September, and the Giant Pumpkin Party in October. Youth activities in the community are plentiful. Seasonal sports are open to children ranging from Pee Wee to Varsity age. Civic clubs such as 4-H, Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts are available as well, while many programs are presented by the library. The Parks and Recreation Department plans trips and community events for residents of all ages. A newly built Town Park continues to expand, offering a walking trail and pavilion, with more to come.

TOWN OF ROCKLAND
The Town of Rockland blends easy access from Rt. 17 with small town charm and a big backyard. Its hamlets, Livingston Manor and Roscoe, are rich in natural assets and outdoor recreation in all four seasons. Located at the southwestern gateway to the Catskill Park, we boast two world class trout fishing streams, the Beaverkill and Willowemoc Creek, and public lands with fishing, hiking, hunting, waterfalls, lakes and ponds. Winter activities include snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. There are golf courses and a dozen public and private campgrounds. Rockland is home to the Catskill Fly Fishing Center, the world’s largest fly fishing museum, and three covered bridges dating back to 1865, one of which is a county park. Other historic treasures include the O & W Railroad Museum and the Roscoe-Rockland Fire Dept’s display of bucket brigade memorabilia. The arts are alive at the Catskill Art Center, several galleries and performance spaces. We have unique annual events: the Two-headed Trout dinner in Roscoe when the fishing season opens, the zany, creative Trout Parade in Livingston Manor in June, plus many smaller events. Farm stands, food stores, and a farmer’s market provide local products in season. We have cozy main streets and great personal vibes from the owner-operated businesses, two craft breweries–the Catskill Brewery and Roscoe Brewery, the Prohibition Distillery, and the Arnold House. The Town of Thompson, one of Sullivan County’s largest and most populated towns, also has the lowest property tax rate. We’re a haven for full-time residents as well as seasonal guests who call us their second home. The Town includes the Village of Monticello and the hamlets of Rock Hill, Harris, Kiamesha Lake, Thompsonville, Glen Wild, and Sackett Lake.
The Montreign Casino and the Adelaar resort complex are both located in the Town, just outside Monticello. The new “Veria Nature Cure & Ayurvedic Wellness Center” is also located in Thompson. Veria will be based upon five ancient sciences: Nature Cure, Ayurveda, yogic sciences, nutrition and acupuncture, and will include treatments such as hydrotherapy and physiotherapy.

TOWN OF TUSTEN Narrowsburg ranks as one of America in Bloom’s 2016 top three “Coolest Downtowns.” Although small (pop. 1,515), we don’t go unnoticed. Historic Main Street dates back to the 1800’s and has continued through the centuries to be the commercial hub of the Town of Tusten Main Street backs up to the deepest and the narrowest part of the Delaware River– perfect for canoeing, rafting, kayaking and fishing. Fishermen can cast their fly’s into the water, while high above their heads soaring bald eagles dip down to scoop up a fish of their own. We’ve been declared the Eagle Capitol of New York State. Our rich history, preserved by the Tusten Historical Society, includes four churches, the Tusten Theater, a circa 1920’s Art Deco theater which serves as the performance venue for the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA). place here. The DVAA which hosts over 12 annual juried art exhibits is housed in the former Hotel Arlington on Main Street, a Registered Historic building. Annual celebrations include Riverfest, a street fair celebrating Art, Music and the Environment, Honey Bee Fest, and a July 4th parade and fireworks, attracting residents and visitors alike. As a small town, we work together, through volunteerism, to make Tusten rich with activities, events and hands on work to keep Narrowsburg looking beautiful as a destination for Sullivan County residents and tourists alike. Other amenities not found in many rural towns include a library, grocery store, gas station, pharmacy and a lumberyard. We boast fine restaurants and fine shops. The Village of Bloomingburg was the first county seat of Sullivan County and is located in the Town of Mamakating. We prospered first as a center on the NewburghCochecton Turnpike and later as a railway town with many guest cottages and homes for those seeking fresh air a beautiful scenery. We are the southernmost village in Sullivan County. We are also the only Sullivan County Community entirely within the Hudson River watershed. Jeffersonville is rich in community groups. We have a Volunteer Fire Department, Volunteer Ambulance Corp, a Lion’s club, a beautification group called JEMS, a Chamber of Commerce and a Community Outreach Group organized by our Village government. We also have several churches, a synagogue and a beautiful community park. We have many annual and several one-time events each year. Our ongoing annual events include A St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Maple Fest, Outdoor Movies in the Park, a full moon drum circle, Women’s Wellness, Jeff Jamboree, Ocktoberfest, Trunk or Treat, and the James Dworetsky Holiday Parade. Proximity is everything here. Our community is very walkable and the abundance of farms makes for easy access to fresh produce, dairy products, eggs and more. We work with realtors to distribute welcome packages containing information about the village and coupons for area businesses to recent sales and newcomers.
The Village Liberty is centrally located in Sullivan County, within the Town of Liberty. It was a major stop on the O&W railroad for summer visitors, especially those visiting world-famous Grossinger’s Hotel. Today, it is conveniently located off of Route 17/86 with easy access to shopping and services. The Village is a great place to live because it is so walkable. It is also an easy commute to many employment locations. Housing is readily available and attractively priced whether you’re looking for a starter home, second home or permanent residence. Nearby Walnut Mountain is rate as one of the Top 25 trails in New York State and Hanofee Park offers a variety of recreation activities.

VILLAGE OF MONTICELLO Monticello, named after the residence of Thomas Jefferson, is Sullivan County’s largest community and the county seat. It was built by Samuel and John Jones to service their interests in natural resources and connect with the NewburghCochecton Turnpike. Tourism has played an important part in the Village. Downtown was active almost 24 hours a day during the historic era of the great hotels. The Sullivan County Government Center and Sullivan County Courthouse are located in the Village Monticello with other public offices are conveniently located within our walkable downtown. Woodridge is friendly and welcoming A 1947 newspaper article dubbed us “Utopia in the Catskills” and focused on the cooperatives in the Village and our slogan “The Friendly Village”. We were and are home to a diversified group of religions and nationalities. Two cooperatives still exist– Associated Mutual Insurance Cooperative founded in 1913 and Cooperative Federal Credit Union founded in 1936. The Village boasts its own police department, court, office, sanitation and highway departments, planning board, zoning board and executive board. We are part of the Rails to Trails and healthy communities initiatives. The entire Village is pedestrian and bike friendly and with the trail running through the Village, connecting two parks and a seating area. Krieger Park has a lake, ballfield, basketball court and picnic area; Centreville Station Park pays homage to the New York, Ontario and Western train days and the original name of the Village; and Veterans Memorial Park honors our
vets. A mural painted on the side of a large building on Broadway memorializes the O & W Railway. The Village boasts a volunteer fire department, Kiwanis club and a group of volunteers who work on our Sullivan Renaissance projects every year and help our Village staff maintain them.

VILLAGE OF WURTSBORO The Village of Wurtsboro is nestled at the base of the Shawangunk Ridge, bordered by the largest fresh water wetland in southeastern NY, and just a few quick miles over the southeast border of Sullivan County off Rt. 17 1/ 86. Famous for our role in the days of the D&H Canal, we’re now home to eateries, eclectic shopping, and professional services on our walkable main street. Our neighborhood public elementary school and new library are in the village. We’re at the intersection of five trails which have recently received a grant of over $1 million for upgrading. DELAWARE VALLEY JOB CORPS The Delaware Valley Job Corps Center is one of 127 Job Corps Centers providing a no-cost education and vocational training programs administered by the U.S. Department of Labor. The program serves young people aged 16 through 24, helping them get a better job, make more money and take control of their lives. At Job Corps, students enroll to learn a trade, earn a high school diploma or TASC and get help finding a good job. Students are paid a monthly allowance which increases with the length of stay. We support our students for up to 21 months after graduation. Students also have the option for Advanced Training offered at various Job Corps, or if accepted into our Advanced College Training program, attend SUNY Sullivan and earn an Associates Degree–all at no extra cost. Life at a Job Corps Center is an exciting and an educational experience. Sullivan County Head Start is a non-profit, single purpose, grantee agency, governed by a Board of Directors. Our classes run a full day from 8 am to 4 pm. Children receive free medical and dental screenings and therapy services, if identified as a need. They also receive healthy meals and snacks, and enjoy playing inside and outdoors in a safe environment. The Head Start program runs from September to June and Early Head Start serves families year round. We currently service 243 pre-school children ages 3-5, 85 infant/toddlers and 21 pregnant moms. The program has 96 employees, 4 buildings-one in Monticello and 3 in Woodbourne and 9 vehicles. We bus our children to and from school and our staff are trained and certified to meet the needs of the children.

The Homestead School derives its uniqueness from the number of enrichment opportunities that it offers. A national evaluation team from the American Montessori Society recognized the school for its “total” environment in which children experience the living lessons of a traditional working barn, complete with livestock and poultry and of a mile-long natural and historical trail. In addition to its emphasis on outdoor education, The Homestead School offers in-depth specialty subjects such as foreign language, computer training, music, drama, and physical education. Commonly viewed as “frills” in education, such specialties are embraced by the Homestead staff as the essence of a program, which helps the child to see constant applications for the regular classroom lessons, while firing the creative imagination and stimulating interests to last a lifetime. We are infusing technology into the learning environment. All buildings have wireless access, with iPads selected as the standard student device and Google classroom adopted to manage student work, and staff receiving professional development for implementation. We are preparing to have a full 1:1 program in place K-12 for the 2017-18 school year. In 2011, we completed a $35.8-million-dollar capital construction project. This included eight new classrooms, renovation of key areas such as bathrooms, a new library/media center and new cafeteria for the elementary school; and a new library/media center, six renovated science labs, a new roof and new main entrance and offices at the high school. A second renovation phase costing $9.6 million, will replace the high school’s windows and repair the brick facade, renovate all classrooms, replace outdated sound and lighting systems in the auditorium, and renovate the art, choral and guidance suites. Work will be completed in 2017.

Sullivan West Central School District enrolls 1200 students with a student-teacher ratio of 15-1 in grades K-3, in a district spread over 250 square miles of Western Sullivan County.
Sullivan West students excel in academics, inter-scholastic athletics, drama, art and music. They’re model student citizens, participating actively in school and civic affairs and volunteering within the community. Of the 99 students in the Class of 2015, 42% earned college credits during their junior and senior years and 85% went on to post-secondary education at institutions such as Siena, New York University, Harvard, Boston College, Hofstra, Lehigh, Villanova, Elmira, American University, and two year and four year SUNY colleges and universities. Our athletic teams are very competitive–often divisional and sometimes sectional champions. Over 40 clubs and activities are available for students in elementary, middle and senior high. We offer eight Advanced Placement courses, five Dual Credit courses with SUNY Sullivan, and both the Syracuse University Chemistry and the Rochester Institute of Technology pre-engineering programs. Many students prepare for careers or for technical post-secondary education by studying Career and Technical Education at the Sullivan County BOCES. Our faculty and staff work with students in small and personal classes. Students who need extra help or special programs are served by guidance counselors in grades 7-12, social workers, psychologists and special education teachers in each school. We enroll approximately 10% of our K-12 students in summer school, providing them opportunities to strengthen reading skills that may have been “lost” during the regular school year. The Sullivan West Central School District provides an excellent education for its students within a small-town, rural community setting. Our schools are great places for students, faculty and staff.
