Cliveden celebrates the birthday of one of Britain’s most illustrious women NANCY ASTOR’S BIRTHDAY PARTY, SUNDAY 19 MAY

T

he National Trust estate of Cliveden in Buckinghamshire invites you to join a glamorous garden party on Sunday 19 May in celebration of the birthday of one of its most remarkable owners – Nancy Astor. The event will take Cliveden back to the 1930s when Nancy Astor and her friends and family would have celebrated in the glorious grounds. The picturesque Water Garden will be transformed for the day, with live music, colourful bunting, a traditional Punch and Judy show and of course a very special birthday cake. Craft activities, including the chance to make a paper party hat, free face painting, big birthday party games as well as Cliveden’s giant maze and the storybook themed play area provide further fun for youngsters. Nancy Astor was born 134 years ago on 19 May 1879 in Virginia in the United States and made her first visit to England in 1903. She met her second husband, fellow 12

American Waldorf Astor, on an ocean liner bound for England a few years later and they married in May 1906. Unlike Nancy, Waldorf had grown up in England. His father purchased the Italianate villa of Cliveden in 1893 and gave it to the young couple as a wedding gift. Under Nancy and Waldorf Astor’s ownership in the early 20th-century, Cliveden became an elegant destination for the rich and powerful. Together, they transformed Cliveden into a centre of political and literary society and guests included Kings Edward VII and George VI, writers and film stars such as George Bernard Shaw and Charlie Chaplin, and important political figures, amongst them Winston Churchill. In 1919 Nancy Astor was elected to Parliament for Plymouth and she made history as the first woman to take up her seat in the House of Commons. On Sunday 19 May another attraction for visitors will be the opportunity to chat with some of the famous characters from Cliveden’s glittering past as

1930s ‘celebrities’ played by the National Trust’s volunteer actors join the birthday party. Adding to the traditional garden party feel, there will be live musical entertainment to ensure the day goes with a swing. Visitors are also encouraged to step back in time to the 1930s and come dresses in costumes from the period, from feather boas and straw boaters, to flapper dresses and flannels. Everyone is welcome to bring their own picnics to enjoy in the Water Garden; however, delicious refreshments are also on offer, with the National Trust cafes laying on a feast of cream teas and other sweet treats, some made from period recipes. Nancy was known to be very partial to a fruit cake called Tennis Cake, which she served for picnic teas during tennis afternoons, and this

cake will be recreated specially for her birthday. For those keen to learn more about Nancy Astor, a trip to the National Trust shop is a must as you’ll find a selection of books on her life for sale. On Sunday 19 May, biographer and historian Adrian Fort will be visiting Cliveden to sign copies of his latest book Nancy – A Story of Lady Astor. Nancy Astor’s birthday celebrations will run from11am to 4pm on Sunday 19 May. Normal Cliveden admission charges apply (adult £9.50, child £4.75, National Trust members free) but no advance booking is required. Location: Cliveden, Taplow, Maidenhead, Buckinghamshire SL6 0JA. CHILTERN TREASURES

T

he Chiltern Painters hope that as many Life Magazine readers as possible will visit their Spring Art Exhibition, which is again being held in the Market Hall, Old Amersham from Thursday 25th April until Sunday 28th April. Entry to the show is free and a warm welcome awaits all visitors. The Chiltern Painters group, which began life in 1969 with four members, has grown in number to eighteen, several honorary members including the well-known singer and entertainer Val Doonican, also a talented artist. Two of the group’s “founding four” Ann Way and Ron Evens - are still exhibiting as honorary members forty years on. One of the principles on which the Chiltern Painters was founded was that members should be friends as well as artists, and through the years this has remained true. Today’s members meet regularly in each other’s homes for talks, demonstrations and critiques by invited professional artists, and during the summer months (weather permitting!) the group paints together outside in various locations around the beautiful Chiltern countryside. There are also occasional joint outings to major exhibitions in London and elsewhere. Originally consisting only of amateur artists, the group now includes both professional and amateurs, and the scope of the work displayed has widened greatly to include sculpture, print-making and wood-carving. The painters in the group work in watercolour, pastels, oils and acrylics in a variety of styles and formats. The Chiltern Painters’ Chairman, Denis Pannett, is a Past President of the prestigious Wapping Group of Artists, an Honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Painter Stainers and a Fellow of the Guild of Aviation Artists, being seven times winner of the prize for the best watercolour in their show at the Mall Galleries. Among his numerous 14

APRIL2013

commissions are paintings for the official Christmas cards for Sandringham House, St George’s Chapel, Windsor and St. Paul’s and Salisbury Cathedrals. Other Chiltern Painters have also regularly exhibited their work at major shows in London and elsewhere. Paintings by Paulene Tunnicliffe have been hung by the R.O.I., the Pastel Society and the Ne English Art Club, and a pastel by her won the Annie Longley award. Robald Wilkinson, a print maker, engraver and designer of renown and formerly a part-time tutor at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, has exhibited at the Bankside Galleries in London, in Birmingham and at Brunell University. Distinguished architect, Ronald Weeks has had drawings and paintings shown at the Royal Academy’s Exhibition and in Bristol and France. Ann Hogben is a prominent sculptor working in clay, bronze and bronze resin, who’s work has been exhibited at the Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows, at R.H.S. Wisley and Country Living shows in London. A recent work by Ann was a commission for the Royal Marsden Hospital. The Chiltern Painters‘ 2013 exhibition will celebrate the artistes‘ love of the Chiltern scenery, so much of it now under threat from the construction of High-Speed railway. Other paintings, through, will range further afield in subject matter, reflecting members many interests and visits to other parts of the country and world. In addition to the paintings prints and sculptures, at prices and sizes to suit all wallets and walls, there will be a large and varied selection of greetings cards and sales at a very reasonable £1.00 each. Do come and have a look! CELEBRITY FOOTBALLERS GIVE A SPORTING HAND FOR PROSTATE CANCER

B

enny Mitchell, 62, resident of Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, is organizing a celebrity 6-a-side football tournament and family fun day on Sunday 12 May 2013 at the Berkhamsted football ground in aid of men’s cancer and, specifically, to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer. Both Benny and his brother Michael, an experienced marathon runner, were diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2009 and 2007 respectively. During Benny’s life and before his own illness, members of his family had many reasons to be thankful to the NHS. This event provides an opportunity to pay their thanks and raise funds at the same time.

16

APRIL2013

The event on Sunday 12 May is for all the family, with fancy dress, kids entertainment and games, disco, bouncy castle, competition to win a brand new Ford Ranger, courtesy of Autorama UK Ltd in Tring, music, food, ladies football courtesy of Watford FC ladies team and, of course, the star attraction, the celebrity 6-a-side football tournament. Some prestigious names make up the list of celebrities, including the likes of Mick Harford, footballer turned Manager, Eddie Niedzwiecki from Chelsea FC, local man Tommy Smith, Nigel Winterburn of Arsenal, referee Graham Poll and commentator Peter Drury, to name just a few, with many more still to be confirmed. As a keen sportsman, Benny

decided to raise funds for The Lister Hospital in Stevenage, where his operation was performed in September 2010, through contacts and friends he had met through sport. Moreover, as a resident of Berkhamsted and friends with Steve Davis, Chairman of Berkhamsted Football Club, Benny’s idea of organising a charity football event for Prostate Cancer quickly gained support and grew into more than just an idea. Says Benny, “When I decided to arrange a football charity event for Prostate Cancer, Steve and Berkhamsted FC were more than supportive and agreed to become involved in what we are trying to achieve”. In conjunction with The Lister Hospital, Benny’s charity is called

‘A Sporting Hand’. “I and Michael have lived to tell the tale about Prostate Cancer, but many of our friends haven’t been so lucky, including Mark Osborne, a good pal of mine from Berkhamsted FC. If caught early, men have a very good chance of surviving Prostrate Cancer. Unfortunately, Mark was misdiagnosed and died at the age of 46, only two years ago. We hope this event will go some way to addressing that sad fact.” For further information to support, sponsor or participate in the day’s activities, please contact: Benny Mitchell on tel: 07973 863815 or send an email to: bennymitchell1@hotmail.co.uk or Steve Davis on tel: 07968 476314.

VENUE INTEREST SOARS AS HOFFMAN’S QUARTET IS RELEASED ON DVD

DREAM

hanks to Hedsor House’s starring role in Dustin Hoffman’s recent box office hit Quartet, the magnificent privately-owned Georgian country house in Taplow has been placed firmly on the map. And, interest is set to soar even higher, when the uplifting film is released on DVD, BLU-Ray and is available to download from 6 May. Quartet was filmed on the picturesque historic 85-acre country estate in autumn 2011 — making its all-star cast of Dame Maggie Smith, Sir Tom Courtenay, Billy Connolly, Pauline Collins, Sheridan Smith and Michael Gambon, regulars at the house for three months. Chosen by the film’s producers and location scouts for its sheer character and charm, the 18th Century home of Augusta the Princess of Wales, mother of King George III, was transformed into Quartet’s fictional Beecham House — a stately retirement home for opera singers. Hedsor House’s domed Grand Hall, majestic Ballroom, Central Staircase and Boudoir as well as the stunning grounds and landscaped

gardens were all transformed into key sets. Meanwhile, Hedsor House’s fascinating and diverse history shone through as a former American Airforce Communication building last used in the Cold War, became the Production Headquarters.

local life

While the house has welcomed royalty, film stars and governments dating back as far as 1166, today Hedsor House is privately run by the fourth generation of the Shephard family as a thriving venue for exclusive wedding, events and filming, benefitting from being just 35 minutes from central London. During the three month filming schedule, Hedsor House hosted 24 different events and weddings, providing logistical challenges for the film’s crew as the entire set had to be rigged and taken down eight times, from the curtains on the windows right down to every single prop! Given as a wedding gift to Phillip and Florence Shephard in 1932 by Phillip Shephard’s parents, Hedsor House has remained in the Shephard family for four generations. The family lived in Hedsor House until 1952 when they moved to another home on the estate where they still live today. After its time as an international computer company’s headquarters, in 2003 the main house once again came back to the Shephard family who renovated and transformed it into the magnificent venue it is today. Last year alone, Hedsor House hosted 65 weddings as well as many events, team building days and country pursuits. Nick Shephard believes the secret to the venue’s success is its flexibility and quintessentially English charm. He said: “It’s a dream setting for a wedding. Intimate 60-guest ceremonies can be hosted in the Grand Hall or a 140-guest wedding breakfast can be staged in the Ballroom with its French doors opening onto the garden.” He added: “For couples wanting to invite larger numbers, a marquee can be set up in the gardens for up to 1500 people. From the moment a bride leaves Hedsor House’s majestic Bridal Suite to descend the Grand Staircase past 12-foot high portraits of Hedsor House’s former royal

guests she will feel like a true princess!” Asian and Jewish weddings have become a speciality – from glittering gold Mandaps in the Grand Hall to brilliant white Chuppahs on the lawns, Hedsor House is an extremely versatile venue. Meanwhile, Hedsor House is also proving a hit with corporate companies. Take an event through its gates and the only limit is your imagination. Whether treasure-hunting through the Oaken Grove, medieval cannon firing on the sweeping lawns or orienteering down the historic Rhododendron walks, Hedsor House provides endless opportunities. It’s therefore no surprise it’s also achieved critical acclaim and various accolades. Only a few short months ago Hedsor House, which features other corporate facilities such as eight meeting rooms, was chosen as the nation’s best events venue for a non-residential location for up to 500 guests in the Eventia Awards. Chairman Eddie Hoare was presented the trophy at a glittering awards ceremony in London, where the team also secured a bronze in the corporate responsibility category for its continued charitable efforts and commitment to ensure the house plays its role in the local community. Due to overwhelming interest and demand thanks to its recent silver screen success, the team has decided to open its doors to the public for the first time to offer a number of Quartet-inspired events. So if you’d like to witness first-hand why the venue on your doorstep is proving so popular, a summer screening of Quartet in the house’s grounds will take place on Friday, 21 June. Alternatively, Les Miserables

THE FOUNTAIN… OF KNOWLEDGE A NEW STATE OF THE ART BUSINESS CENTRE HAS RECENTLY OPENED IN AMERSHAM, SPECIALISING IN PROVIDING PROFESSIONAL TRAINING AND MEETING VENUE FACILITIES FOR THE LOCAL BUSINESS COMMUNITY.

T

he Fountain, the newest division of The Giles Group, officially opened its doors in January and boasts minimalist interior design, stylish décor and specially commissioned art, along with the very latest in meeting and training technology and beautifully ergonomic contemporary furniture. David Giles, Chairman of The Giles Group, said, “As well as providing a West End type environment to businesses looking to hire our facilities, The Fountain will also be home to The Giles Academy. A centre of

excellence in business travel education and vocational training. It’s equipped with fantastic audio visual technology and is the perfect place for meetings, conferences and corporate workshops.” The Boardroom offers a sumptuous environment for up to 12 delegates, with natural materials such as walnut and leather integrated seamlessly with hidden technology all controlled wirelessly via an Apple iPad. This device manages the various high-end AV inputs, from BluRay DVD, Apple TV and both resident and guest computers to the 22

broadcast quality HD video conferencing system; all of which are fed to the stunning 80” high definition display, meaning content from any source looks absolutely pristine. By contrast, the clean minimalism of The Training Room provides the perfect environment in which to learn and to teach. Nine independent work stations, each with widescreen display PCs, all enjoy a perfect view of the touch-controlled Trainer’s podium. This encourages direct engagement between teacher and student while the cinema style 120” HD display ensures even the most complex content is presented in stunning clarity and detail. For smaller gatherings of up to 8 delegates, then The Fountain’s Meeting Room is the ideal choice. Sharp lines and white décor are complimented by plenty of natural light to make this venue perfect for meetings and brain storming sessions alike. A 60” HD display is at the heart of the suite’s AV setup, displaying content from the resident PC, guest laptop or any iOS device, including iPads and iPhones, via the built-in WiFi Apple TV system. With its own dedicated breakout lobby, the Meeting Room provides a perfect and self contained environment. At the very heart of The Fountain you’ll find The Hub. This incredibly versatile space provides a place in which to meet, entertain, socialise and present. With three high-definition displays throughout The Hub, all capable of running independent content or synchronised from either client

supplied material or generated by The Giles Group’s own digital branding software, The Hub is a great place for more informal gatherings and product launches. A unique WonderWall, with fifteen differently sized and shaped display boxes, all fully lit, is not only a fascinating talking point, but also a great place for the Fountain’s clients to display their company collateral, truly making the place their own. But The Fountain isn’t just about style and technology, there’s a very human element at work here. Fountain helpers are on hand to

take care of delegates’ every business need, from printing a document to serving a sandwich. And whether it’s a working lunch that’s called for or full bespoke catering for an evening drinks reception or product launch, The Fountain staff deliver five star attention to detail. With nothing else quite like it in the Buckinghamshire area, The Fountain is certainly creating some waves among the local business community. Extra Curricular Activities words by Jill Bennett, Schools’ Marketing Specialist, Orchid Creative ll schools recognise the wider educational value of pupil involvement in activities beyond the classroom: it encourages them to learn new skills, to pursue special interests and to grow into well-rounded individuals. It also encourages pupils to meet other children with similar interests across a range of ages, provides opportunities for leadership and responsibility and can be enormous fun. Involvement in such activities broadens pupil horizons and experiences and gives them a more balanced perspective on their work inside the classroom.

A

Independent schools are in a strong position to put resources into this crucial area of school life and child development, offering an impressive range of extra curricular activities; this is undoubtedly one of the reasons many parents choose to educate their children privately.

DRAMA AT HABERDASHERS’ ASKE’S SCHOOL FOR GIRLS

CANOE POLO AT HABERDASHERS’ ASKE’S BOYS’ SCHOOL

There is such a vast wealth of opportunities available outside lessons, as well as creative outlets in subjects such as Music, Art, Design Technology and Drama. There are many other types of activity such as sport, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, academic clubs and societies and community service, Adventurous Training and, of course, the CCF (Combined Cadet Force). Pupils on expeditions quickly become aware that one person cannot successfully carry the rest of the team and if the role they assign themselves are not taken seriously by the designated member of the group, problems quickly emerge. Such schemes are extremely popular and widely promoted in independent schools as they combine service and self-development. Although these opportunities lie outside the normal curriculum, they still reflect the importance of school values: community, teamwork, balance, leadership and above all a sense of fun. With all of us so conscious of worries about childhood obesity, involvement in extra curricular sport, whether recreational or competitively, is something that parents and schools themselves are very keen to promote. Again, independent schools often are very well placed to provide the facilities and staffing time and expertise to support exciting and varied sporting opportunities beyond the curriculum. A school’s extra-curricular activities programme provides excitement not only through academic as well as physical and emotional challenge; there is something for everyone to experiment with until they find their own niche. The key point is that pupils should discover what they enjoy, and then participate; in doing so, the broader skills that they master during the course of these activities will contribute to building the rounded individuals that schools and parents hope children will become at the end of their school career. As Peter Hamilton, Headmaster of the Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School, notes: “The huge range of extra-curricular activities available at my school ensures that every boy finds something at which he excels, and as a result develops a self-assurance that will equip him for life.”

One of Hertfordshire’s best kept secrets idden in 23 acres of parkland, Lockers Park is one of Hertfordshire’s best kept secrets - a small and excellent day and boarding prep school for 145 boys. Educating boys since 1874, Lockers Park promotes academic excellence with an impressive range of scholarships attained each year and outstanding Common Entrance results. A closer examination reveals a school that delivers an environment of encouragement and support combined with well-loved customs and traditional values of respect, tolerance and fair play. Lockers Park boys are happy, energetic and well-motivated and, as a school for boys only, their particular needs are well catered for. The welfare and happiness of the boys is at the heart of all we do.

H

Academic excellence We are proud of our academic record. Experienced teachers expect and encourage the best from every pupil. Class sizes are small, with an average of 14 and a staff:pupil ratio of 1:8. Our recent ISI inspection noted that the boys are very thoroughly prepared for all external exams and, each year, the leavers pass onto their chosen senior schools, from the country’s best public schools to top independent day schools and prestigious grammar schools. Sport for all Boys at Lockers Park have the opportunity to take part in sports or physical activities every day either in teams games such as rugby, football, cricket and hockey or individual sports including squash, athletics and fencing. In addition to our fully equipped sports hall, we also have an astroturf pitch, heated swimming pool, croquet lawn and .22 shooting range. The standard of sports

performance is high as our record against other, often much larger schools, demonstrates. More importantly, every boy has the opportunity to represent the school and we work hard to allow the less confident sportsman to flourish. We also run regular sports tours and the 1st XI Cricket team has just returned from a hugely successful tour of South Africa Music and the arts Music is an important part of life at Lockers. Most boys learn a musical instrument and many learn several. The boys play in our orchestras and chamber groups or sing in one of our choirs, including the excellent Chapel Choir. Our musicians perform regularly, both in our beautiful Chapel and in prestigious venues in London or abroad. Lockers Park boys frequently win music scholarships to senior schools. Drama is also popular. Every year, we put on at least two plays or musicals and many boys enter LAMDA speech and drama examinations. There are also plenty of opportunities to perform at school assemblies, debates, inter-set competitions and traditional Christmas charades. Our ethos Nurturing boys as individuals is central to the ethos of the school. We value our small, family atmosphere, which means that every boy is well known to all staff, as well as to each other. Our parents often reward us with the greatest compliment and tell us that we not only understand their son’s character but also encourage his unique talents, commenting on our ability to find brilliance in every boy.

The Best Start he start of school is a big step in a child’s life and also in that of its parents. There is much debate about when is the right age to start being taught, but here at Westbrook Hay we feel that it is obvious; it is when the child is ready. Children can come to us in the term in which they turn 3, some will come from nurseries, other straight from home, while some will choose to remain at the local nursery and join us in Reception, when full time school begins. In our purpose-built Lower School, children benefit from a secure setting, with its own playgrounds, and advantageous teacher: pupil ratios. The aim is to provide a gentle start to life here, building on children’s existing skills. After two years or so in our Nursery, children move to Reception and this is the stage at which we see most children make the break through to literacy and numeracy. One of the aspects that most appeals

T

here is that the curriculum that underpins all the learning in the Nursery is delivered through children playing while they are learning. The subtlety involved requires skilled planning and delivery, but does mean that children largely remain blissfully unaware that they are being taught at this early stage. The setting has to be exciting for children, sustaining their interest and one that offers sufficient variety to make every day an enjoyable challenge. Give a child the opportunity to discover that the 10

coloured blocks they have can be sorted into a variety of groups and then built into a three-dimensional shape and the seeds of mathematical knowledge are sown in a practical manner, which has to be better than sitting there barking out the rote order of numbers in a robotic fashion that demonstrates little of value. The modern child expects to be engaged by what they are doing and here at Westbrook Hay we believe that we provide children with the best start to their learning journey. ■

Alarmed by graduate shortages in science, technology, engineering, and maths; by the dumbing-down of examination standards; and by the soft option trendiness it associates with arts, coursework, and media-related subjects, the government is signalling a return to “basics”. The EBacc is based on ‘Five Pillars’: English, Maths, Science, Modern Foreign Languages and Humanities (History and Geography), coincidentally the same subjects that the Russell Group of universities lists as ‘Facilitating Subjects’ - that supposedly give youngsters a better chance of gaining a place at a top university.

If the pressure is on state schools to become cultural wastelands, it will fall yet again to Britain’s independent sector to mitigate the consequences of government faddery. Only independent schools will nurture that exceptional breadth of interest and achievement that surpasses a narrowly academic curriculum and develops a culture of creativity – whether scientific, artistic, or a fusion of the two. Rishi Sodha’s huge canvases ‘Man-made apocalypse’, exhibited at MTS in 2006, were his gateway into the design profession. Independent schools must preserve the space and resources for creativity that put Riz Ahmed on the stage in ‘South Pacific’ aged 11, encouraged Joe Ray to experiment with keyboards as well as language, and allowed Rishi Sodha to work on large-scale projects.

Encouraging Curiosity in the Classroom words by Dr Mary Short, Headmistress, St. Helen’s School uriosity is something which lies at the heart of all education and is what drives us to seek answers to some of the most extraordinary questions that can be asked. It is something which should be encouraged and nurtured through education so that children retain their capacity to ask ‘why’ throughout their lives and develop into the people who will ask and answer questions of the greatest importance to human wellbeing and to the future of the planet.

C

Intellectual curiosity is evident in very young children when they start to ask ‘why’ and begin to show the great desire that human beings have for knowledge. Every time a child says ‘why’ they are opening themselves up to the vast resource of human understanding. As adults, we answer them with straightforward explanations and these explanations become the bookshelves in the child’s own mental library. They become the means of organising and cataloguing all future knowledge. Children thrive in an environment where they receive the stimulation of answers which enable them to start to become individuals with their own internal mental structures. This desire for knowledge and to ask ‘why’ remains with us as we grow older and move through formal education but we become more self-conscious about what we know and what we think we should know, but don’t. We start to become aware that other people appear to know than more than us and we become concerned that we will reveal ourselves as being stupid if we ask ‘why’ and we therefore start to ask it less often. If children are to thrive, we must overcome this self-consciousness and encourage intellectual curiosity and a willingness to continue to be inquisitive about the world we live in, and to develop an appetite for new knowledge and understanding. Education is the formal means through which we satisfy the human desire to know and to understand and a well-balanced, stimulating 42

APRIL2013

education should focus on the pursuit of academic excellence through the acquisition of intellectual curiosity and independent learning skills. It is these skills which will enable students to make the very best of all the opportunities that are available to them both at school and outside the school gates. The curriculum at St. Helen’s offers countless opportunities for the girls to do this through activities which start with the very youngest children in our pre-prep department, Little St. Helen’s, with, childinitiated learning days, for example. This continues throughout the school with a curriculum that encourages students not just to complete tasks but to research, present, debate, guess and prove, with classroom learning punctuated by independent learning tasks that encourage students to explore new ideas, to think outside the box and to discover the joys of learning. Girls in Junior School enjoy the opportunity to take part in active learning weeks whilst pupils further up the school participate in activities such as the Year 9 Enquiry project in which girls undertake individual student-led research on a topic of their choice. By becoming actively involved, having control of their own learning and being given the scope to follow their own lines of enquiry, pupils develop a real sense of curiosity and excitement, resulting in an education environment where students strive to do their best and to reach their intellectual potential. In the Sixth Form, students benefit from an academic programme that extends their intellectual understanding and that develops professional and life skills, critical thinking and creative and cultural interests. By creating an educational experience which ensures that pupils enjoy their learning experiences and discover their personal talents and interests, both academically and outside their studies, schools can foster children’s natural curiosity and develop lifelong learners who will be ready to shine at university and in the world beyond, with confidence, self-reliance and independence.

Maintained State or Independent to inspire a love of learning

– that is the question? words by Patrick Atkinson, Headmaster, Beechwood Park School nce the thrills and spills of having a new born babe have been adjusted to, many parents’ thoughts turn to their child’s education. This often begins with researching toddler and playgroups and then quickly becomes an investigation into local nursery schools and options for the next stage. It presents many with a real conundrum; should we spend our money on the child’s education when they are of primary school age or should we wait and spend it on sending the child to an independent secondary school?

O

The power of the argument seems to be in favour of the independent secondary school; after all it is these schools that are often able to demonstrate significantly better performance at GCSE, A Level and University Entrance and it would be naïve if we didn’t also accept that the flashy facilities many of them provide are a serious attraction. Parents are also influenced by the fact that independent education at any stage is a real financial commitment and it seems tempting to put it off until careers are underway, salaries are higher and the family is well established in its home. There are, however, more fundamental considerations for parents and they should not be embarrassed about the fact that part of this is a ‘value for money’ argument. The first point to note is that by and large a good preparatory school (nursery, infant and middle independent school all rolled into one) is often a great deal cheaper than an independent secondary school.

BEECHWOOD PARK SCHOOL’S HEADMASTER, PATRICK ATKINSON, ADDRESSING A SEMINAR ON ADVISING PARENTS HOW TO CHOOSE THEIR CHILD’S SCHOOL

The potential for learning and establishing all the necessary attitudes for maximising learning decreases the older a child gets. It is not uncommon to hear parents and teachers of 16 year olds saying that the progress of their adolescent charges has come to a halt. Therefore it seems sensible to consider how a good preparatory school can utilise this very important time to the maximum benefit of the child, inspiring a love of learning, enhancing development and stimulating the child, well beyond what might be expected. Small classes, generally no more than 20, and fewer in setted subjects, are the norm in preparatory schools. It is usual to find classes of 24 or APRIL2013

At good prep schools children are taught by subject specialists from a young age, not just in English and Mathematics but also in science, languages and the performing arts. Children are also being taught IT skills throughout their lessons and more and more preparatory schools are offering Computer Science lessons (this is where the future lies). At my school, in common with many other prep schools, the Sports facilities are superb with visiting coaches who offer a tempting variety of sports to ensure there really is something for everyone and every child enjoys physical activity. Some prep schools are able to offer children the opportunity to board, maybe on a flexi basis, and this can have a positive impact on a child’s development with significant benefits when they go on to their next school, particularly if it is a maintained school.

The other relevant, and probably the most important fact, is that children develop more in the first three years of their education than at any other time of their lives.

44

so in the senior independent schools and many more in the maintained sector. The prep schools are therefore able to offer children a much more individualised programme. The sooner positive attitudes to learning are established, as well as understanding that it requires focus and effort, as well as a real joy and interest in acquiring knowledge and skills, the better. These attributes can be instilled by the time a child leaves their prep school and are rarely forgotten. Indeed should that child then move on to a maintained school, perhaps because the money has run out, then these well-established habits will be useful for life.

So parents have a really profound choice to make and if they get it right then actually the cost of providing their child with the benefits of an independent education might be less expensive than they expect. More and more families are seeing the value of this and move their children from the independent sector into the maintained sector once their child has established a love of learning, great self-esteem and social skills, a really good moral code and a deep interest in active involvement in cultural and physical activities. All of which will be useful for life and form the basis of an impressive CV. WELCOME DANCE AND SINGING

Visiting a different school world t the end of 2005, Herne Hill School, an independent nursery and pre-prep school in South-East London, formed an allegiance with Khanya Primary School, a state school in a township in Cape Town. The aim has been to form lasting links which not only support this desperately poor South African school but also provide benefits to Herne Hill’s children such as making them more appreciative of the material comfort they enjoy and aware of the world they live in.

The children often share seats and have to take turns to do the activities. The children proudly demonstrated their singing and dancing skills. This is an area in which they excel. Their natural rhythm and movement is amazing! The teachers also love to sing, even punctuating staff meetings with a song and dancing to it.

Across the pond: Study in the US

pplying to ‘college’ (university) in the USA used to be rare amongst British students – perhaps the preserve of students with sports scholarships or parents with deep pockets. However, the recent rise of tuition fees in the UK, combined with the financial aid packages available at some US colleges, mean that the difference in cost between studying in the UK and USA is becoming much smaller. In some cases, crossing the pond will enable a student to emerge after four years with a good Bachelors degree, an international CV and little or no debt.

A

While tuition fees in the USA can be even higher than the UK – £9,000 per year is about average – tuition and living costs can be offset by grants provided by many colleges, some of which are available to British students. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Dartmouth and Amherst are the most generous to international students. In practice, families with incomes of less than £40,000 per annum will often get all costs paid by these colleges, including tuition, food, accommodation, books and a travel allowance for two trips home a year. Families with higher incomes also receive means-tested grants, and even a salary of £110,000 will attract aid. In addition, about 60 other US colleges also provide at least some financial aid to international applicants. As the aid is usually in the form of grants, not loans, the money does not have to be paid back in most cases. But there are many other good reasons to study in the USA besides finance. By far the most important factor to UK students is the broad ‘liberal arts’ curriculum that is followed in most US colleges. Unlike in the UK, there is no need to commit to one or two subjects to study when you apply. In the USA, apart from a small core curriculum, you can study whatever you like for the first 18 months. This is ideal for those students who are keen to explore new interests before choosing which subjects to study in more depth. American universities also seek to educate the ‘whole person’. As such, extracurricular activities are considered an integral part of a student’s experience, rather than ancillary to the main business of education, as they are often viewed in the UK. A large US college will have around 400 recognised student clubs, including sports teams, performing arts groups, international groups, religious groups, community service groups, and newspaper and magazine publications. The emphasis on holistic education is reflected in the application process, where extracurricular achievement is valued

just as much as academic ability and you will be asked to explain how you intend to contribute to college life. Finally, an important reason to study in the USA is that you will acquire a more global outlook. Students from all over the world study in the USA and your multicultural experience will be valued by future employers. Global companies look to hire graduates who can communicate in a variety of contexts and with different people. What better way to demonstrate an understanding that the world really is getting smaller than by studying abroad? You will also build up a global network of contacts, useful in anything you go on to do later in your career. Natalie is the founder of MyUniApplication.com. She can guide you with all aspects of both US and UK university applications and give you expert guidance on your application essays and personal statement. She also offers interview preparation and SAT/ACT preparation classes.

MyUniApplication.com Top tips for applying to US colleges: 1. Research the US colleges thoroughly and create a shortlist. 2. Allow plenty of time to draft and redraft your application essays and show it to your family, your teachers, and, if possible, a specialist. 3. Practise taking the standardised tests (SATs or ACTs), an important part of your application. 4. Calculate the net cost of your education, taking account of tuition fees, living costs and financial aid. 5. Investigate if there are any scholarships for which you can apply, for example, in music or sport. 6. Talk to a professional adviser such as Natalie Lancer, for guidance in putting together a successful application

LOOKING AFTER YOUR CHILD’S

EMOTIONAL WELLBEING

ow in its’ 7th year, The Olive Branch Group is continuing its work providing Cognitive Behaviour Therapy to individuals, couples and groups. Founder of The Olive Branch Group, Karen Thomas highlights the importance of providing emotional support for children, how this can lead to a better education and the benefits of family therapy.

N

“In addition to working with adults, The Olive Branch Group works alongside children and young people. Like adults, sometimes our children need some additional support, a little bit of emotional TLC. Exams, sporting pressures, relationship issues – be it with their parents, peers or siblings – can all take their toll on our children leading to emotions such as anger, stress, anxiety and depression; and deterioration in behaviour. We all want the best for our children and for them to get the most from their education and I’m sure it is no surprise to hear that learning is best achieved when emotionally stable children are introduced to supportive educational environments. However, even with the best resources and the most highly qualified and experienced teachers, children will not achieve their best if they are anxious, unsettled or find themselves isolated from their peer group. The Olive Branch Group specialises in providing Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to children with emotional [and/ or behavioural] difficulties. We have a track record of working with schools and supporting families to help children tackle problems that might otherwise prevent them from making the most of their education. We work either directly in conjunction with schools or privately outside of the school environment. In addition to offering CBT on a one to one basis, we have come to

50

APRIL2013

realise that sometimes a more holistic approach is needed. As such we have just launched our ‘Family Consultancy’ option. This allows us to make an assessment not just of the child but also of the family and school environment. It is simply not always enough to offer therapy to a child without looking at the broader picture. The ‘Family Consultancy’ option allows us to have a more in depth look at issues like; parenting difficulties such as eating, sleeping, homework and behaviour management, interpersonal problems with peers, siblings, parents or other adults, issues at school be it academic, social or the provision of additional support, whilst also using CBT to help adjust any emotional difficulties. At The Olive Branch Group we know what a positive role CBT can have in empowering the most vulnerable of children and have witnessed first-hand the impact this can have on their ability to learn and enjoy their time at home and school. We also know that fixing one part of the puzzle isn’t always enough. If you feel that your child would benefit from our input, whether on a one to one basis or if you feel that need additional support as a family, please do not hesitate to contact me.” Karen Thomas olivebranchgroup@yahoo.co.uk www.olivebranchgroup.co.uk 07738713545

LONDON’S MILLIONAIRE PROPERTY BOOM Sales of multi-million pound properties offering home comforts such as private spas and wine cellars rose a “staggering” 71% in the final three months of 2012, according to Land Registry figures. ritain may have taken one step towards a possible triple-dip recession during that period, but the market for properties priced between £2m and £5m in England and Wales boomed. A total of 448 properties with a £2m-£5m price tag were sold during the fourth quarter of 2012, compared with 262 during the same period in 2011, according to analysis of Land Registry data by residential property specialist London Central Portfolio.

B

Sales of “super prime” homes in Central London, costing in excess of £10m, proved similarly robust, rising tenfold as wealthy European, Russian, Chinese and Arab buyers continued to view the capital’s property market as a “safe haven” for their money. The most expensive property to change hands during the final three months of last year was a home in Farm Street, Mayfair, which fetched more than £28.1million. Wealthy buyers also snapped up properties in exclusive developments such as One Hyde Park, the residential project launched in 2011 by the colourful Candy brothers, offering homeowners with deep pockets features such as eel-skin decorated walls, a panic room and homecooked meals from a team of award-winning chefs. One half of the property development duo, Nick Candy, has retained a penthouse at One Hyde Park with his celebrity wife, the singer and actress Holly Valance.

Average prices in prime areas of Central London, including Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea, rose 14.1% to end 2012 at £1,359,739, according to the LCP research. However, Naomi Heaton, chief executive of LCP, said average prices reported by the Land Registry may have been inflated by the number of buyers now using their own names to purchase properties, rather than using a taxefficient corporate vehicle. Using a corporate structure to buy a property has become less attractive following a crackdown by George Osborne, the Chancellor, during last year’s Budget. The Chancellor introduced a 15% stamp duty for individuals buying through a corporate vehicle. Ms Heaton pointed out that properties wrapped in a corporate vehicle and sold as a company do not appear on the Land Registry. Therefore, an increase in the number of people who have chosen to buy in their own names has had an inflationary effect on average prices, according to Land Registry data. The boom in £2m-£5m properties comes despite an increase in stamp duty, from 5% to 7%, in last year’s Budget. The rise initially sparked a fall in the number of transactions in this price category, with sales in the third quarter dropping by almost 30% year-on-year, before recovering.

A friend friend suggested that it could be rrelated elated to something he eats. eats. Is Is this tr true? ue?

There are several factors contributing to the he difficulties with yyour our sleep. From m a physical point of view w,, pain from a shoulder problem will nearly always affect sleep when lying on the injured side. Managing yyour our pain is important to make yyou ou as comfor c table as possible and a GP can advise yyou ou on this. As the shoulder hasn’t improved d in 6 w weeks eeks, I would advise treatment with a physiotherapist or osteopath.

Hi Anna, childhood eczema can feel hot and itchy and can be caused by many different factors. It can get worse in hot or cold weather, when a child is unwell, or may hav ve e an environmental trigger including dust, pet furr, woollen clothing or perfumes... diet can be another important factor. If y you ou ar a e going to exxclude clude foods from the diet, this should be done in a structured way and preferably with the help of a dietitian. Your GP can refer y you ou to an NHS dietitian. Try and keep a food and eczema diary to help identify if the eczema might be triggered by a food (or foods). If food is making eczema worse and foods are exxcluded cluded from the diet it may become unbalanced; this is why replacement foods should be used and recipes for family foods adapted; it is easier than you o think to do this especially with the right help and supervision.

Recent events will be contributing to yyour our anxiety and directly affecting ecting yyour our sleep. You could look to explore this with a cognitive behavioural approach giving yyou ou some useful tools for reducing anxietyy. H Hypnother ypnot ypnotherapy would be exxcellent cellent too as it would enable ble yyou ou to get into a relaxed state where sleep will occur naturally and easilyy.. If yyou ou are struggling gling to manage yyour our father and his physical needs please contact his GP and social services for further community care. I’ I’ve ve had an MRI confirming that I have hav ve e a slipped disc in my back. Is Is it safe to hav have ve e osteopathic treatment treatment for my back pain?

‘Slipped disc’ is a colloquial term for a prolapsed or herniating intervertebral disc. Discs are the cushioning betw ween een the 24 mo oving vi ving vertebrae (bones) in the spine. Damage happens when the soft squidgy centre of the disc pushes through a weakened portion of its own outside fibrous layyer er and this can lead to nerves being compressed. This can be very serious and in certain circumstances can lead to a condition called cauda equina syndrome which requires immediate surgery. Pain from a prolapsed disc can be debilitating and yyour our body will try to compensate to avoid o it. Whilst joints do need to move to get betterr,, this altered movement can result in additional problems. It is commonly understood that keeping active is better than bed rest for this condition. Howevverr, it is important that this condition is managed properlyy. An osteopath can go through with you in detail, which mo ovements and activities ties yyou ou must avvoid oid to stop the problem getting any worse with the aim of maximising the mobility of the rest of the spine in order to minimise the forces occurring at the damaged levvel. el. & THE BODY BY VI 90-DAY CHALLENGE

health b eauty

What is the 90-Day Challenge? It’s a fun and exciting new Challenge to help you reach your personal health goal.

Well, you remember when your Mum or Grandma would let you lick the bowl after she’d made a cake?

weight loss I’d recommend the Boost Kit but for different Challenge goals you need to select your kit accordingly.

What do you mean by a personal health goal? I mean whatever goal you choose for improving your physical health and wellbeing.

Oh yes! Well that’s what it tastes like, cake mixture. It’s known as “the shake mix that tastes like cake mix”.

Okay, so how do you order a Challenge Kit? It’s simple, you order on line. The product launch in the UK is 15th of April but you can pre-order your Challenge Kit now.

You mean The Challenge is all about losing weight? No, the 90-Day Challenge is not just for losing weight, it has been designed and adapted to help you lose weight, improve your health or gain lean muscle mass. Okay, so how do I know that it works? Because it’s a proven system and has grown to become the No.1 Weight Loss and Fitness Challenge Platform in North America. So what is the “system” that The Challenge is based upon? It’s a health-improvement programme based around the delicious Vi Shape Nutritional Shake. Is it expensive? Not at all, it works out at around £1.24 per shake. I bet you couldn’t buy lunch for £1.24? And better still, you could even get it free. Free? Yes free. What if it doesn’t work? Believe me it does work, there are literally thousands of people who have had life-changing transformations on The Challenge but if you’re not satisfied with your Challenge results, then ViSalus are so confident that they provide a money-back guarantee. It also contains 23 vitamins and minerals. Did you say lower carb? Yes and if you’re used to using a weight-watching calculator, a normal serving of 2 scoops of shake mix is equal to 2 points. So what’s Tri-sorb™ protein, I’ve never heard of it before? It’s a unique blend of high-quality proteins made up of non-GM soy protein and two forms of whey protein. Okay but what does the shake taste like? 70

BRING YOUR HOLIDAY HOME

H

olidays may be short but the memories can last for decades. Keep them alive at home with reminders of those far-away places in displays and decor touches. Gabrielle Fagan explores high street travelogue style. Let's be honest, a holiday isn't just about relaxing and getting away from it all, it also has status value. Exotic destinations - the farther flung or more unusual the better - give us instant holiday cred and most of us will have boasted about a break. But now our homes can do the talking because travelogue style is hot, whether it's walls and accessories displaying maps, or small touches which give the impression you're always on the move. So introduce a little wanderlust into your home - or satisfy the armchair traveller within - with a trunk full of travel treats for rooms. ● Wonder wall: Be bold and paper a wall with a Vintage Wall map mural, from £99 from bespoke textile and wallpaper printers Digetex (0161 873 8891/www.digetex.com). ● Armchair adventure: Lounge on a Maps cushion, showing a map of the world. £28 from John Lewis (www.johnlewis.com). ● Tray chic: Offer tea and sympathy to those who haven't had a break and serve it on a Photo Tray, on which you can mount nine photographs (holiday or otherwise!). £35 from Cox & Cox (0844 858 0734/www.coxandcox.co.uk). ● All packed up: Have trunk will travel! But even if you don't go anywhere, a hand-made vintage-inspired traveller's trunk is still decorative. From £35-£45 from John Lewis (www.johnlewis.com). ● Picture perfect: A photographic print, featuring your own photographs and personalised with your own title and captions, could be a brilliant way to display a collection of holiday memories. Personalised Polaroid Album Print from £80, by The Drifting Bear, from Not On The High Street (0845 259 1359/www.notonthehighstreet.com). Or list all your favourite places with a Classic Personalised Destination print, from £38, by Betsy Benn, also from Not On The High Street. ● Memory board: Pop tickets and trip 'to do' lists on to a Home Comforts pin board, decorated with a variety of destination stamps. £35 from John Lewis, available from August 31 (www.johnlewis.com). ● Postcard pretty: Text and tweeting may be the fashionable way of communicating that 'wish you were here' message nowadays, but postcards still have traditional charm. Paper a feature wall in Postcard wallpaper, featuring either a collage of the back of old postcards with messages, stamps and addresses; or one depicting vintage style destination photos. Postcard wallpapers available to order from around £54 a square metre from Purldeco (0203 110 0643/www.purldeco.com). ● Name drop trend: Mimic a transatlantic vibe without leaving home. A red New York cushion, £20 from Kenneth Cole's New York Home collection at House of Fraser (available August 31). Add pieces from his New York To China collection, featuring landmarks: Mug, £6, bowl, £6 (0870 160 7270/www.houseoffraser.co.uk). 74

THE GREEN DEAL CASHBACK SCHEME

IS THERE CATCH?

MANY UK HOME OWNERS LOOKING AT REPLACEMENT DOUBLE GLAZING USING THE GREEN DEAL CASHBACK SCHEME MIGHT WELL CONSIDER ITS RULES TO BE VERY MUCH ‘A CATCH’.

W

hilst any home improvement scheme that assists UK householders improve their properties, whilst at the same time enabling them to save money on their energy bills, is to be welcomed. However, as with past Government schemes the actual devil is in the detail of the Green Deal cashback scheme, if replacement windows and doors is what a property is crying out for, as the benefits to the home owner are minor at best. The scheme might genuinely assist those only replacing two small single pane windows with "A" rated UPVC windows, and who don't mind filling in lots of forms, paying 100% of the costs of the windows upon installation (on a "first come. first served basis") will get a maximum of £320 back if the two small windows cost as much as £640 including VAT. It is not only UK consumers who have to deal with all the red tape associated with the Green Deal, as suppliers who want to join the scheme have to do a vast amount of work to for very little return, which is really the same boat UK home owners are in, given the strict limits placed on the scheme for replacement windows. There are some issues surrounding the "Green Deal cashback scheme" that householders really should be made fully aware of before they apply for the scheme: i) Consumers are only allowed ONE Green Deal cashback application, so home owners wanting to do other energy saving projects, such as insulation or upgrading their heating or boiler,

80

APRIL2013

must apply for these at same time as say replacement windows and doors, with a maximum amount of £1,000 available assuming that they spend a minimum of £2,000 on improvements that qualify. ii) Any Cashback from the Green Deal cashback scheme is capped at a maximum of 50% of the cost. iii) The Green Deal cashback scheme is only available through official Green Deal suppliers, with consumers having to pay the entire amount upfront. iv) The cashback scheme for all household improvements at the current rates is capped at £40m for entire UK (i.e. not a lot!), on a first come, first served basis, plus consumers cannot claim until after all the work is done and paid for in full, and only after each supplier latterly registers that all the work that has been done all complies with all the Green Deal cashback rules. v) There is another £85m set aside for the scheme, but at unconfirmed rates. These rates will probably depend on amount and speed of take up of the first £40m, and are likely to be less than the first wave (a bit like the Feed in Tariff re solar panels is being continually reduced). vi) The maximum UK homeowners can claim in total towards replacement windows is only £320, and even to get this they must spend at least £640 to be able to claim this, plus they can only apply if a) changing existing SINGLE GLAZING and b) fitting “A” rated double/triple glazing. Given the average cost of an average sized genuinely "A" rated UPVC double glazed casement window with a couple of opening vents and a fixed pane is around £600 supplied and fitted, this cashback scheme in effect might fund half a window? vii) When it comes to a replacement external door, the maximum UK home owners can get back on a high performance replacement door is £40, conditional on a high performance, highly thermally efficient door being installed. viii) The Green Deal also offers the prospect of home owners being able to claim a maximum of £230 secondary glazing. ix) The real question is the amount of red tape involved for both supplier and home owner worth the gain, given the pot of cash is extremely small, plus as the DECC's own leaflet states “These rates are guaranteed for the first £40m after which the rates are likely to reduce. Act early to get the best rates” x) THE CATCH - if the primary reason consumers are interested in the Green Deal is so that they get a contribution towards a replacement window and/or door, beware, as if the Green Deal Assessment recommends that a UK home owners loft and/or cavity wall insulation needs doing, these Green Deal improvements will take priority over replacement windows and doors. Consequently, customers with homes needing loft insulation and cavity wall insulation, will have to spend money on one or both of these home improvements first, BEFORE being allowed to claim any cashback whatsoever towards a double glazed window etc. Whilst it is be welcomed as a very small step in the right direction, the Green Deal scheme in my opinion is a token limited scheme, that once consumers find out all the catches, red tape, strict rules and amount of hassle involved, may well not want to spend the all the time that is required to fill out the application forms, and/or outlay the entire amount for the replacement windows upfront. To find out more about the benefits of fitting “A” rated aluminium or UPVC replacement double or triple glazing, ask the experts at Hazlemere Windows on 01494 854266 who will carry out a no obligation free consultation at your property and provide a written quotation to consider in your own time and space. LLOYD LOOM OF SPALDING

A

at St Giles

s a small family run bespoke furniture specialist with a strong heritage, St Giles Furniture is proud to be associated with Lloyd Loom of Spalding. This innovative furniture manufacturer, employing skilled British craftsmen to make genuine Lloyd Loom weave using traditional techniques, has much in common with our own philosophy and manufacturing techniques which gives us huge confidence in the service we are able to offer our customers at St Giles Furniture. Last year we extended our showroom in Chalfont St Giles enabling us to dedicate an entire room to the Lloyd Loom of Spalding brand with an extensive range of product on display. Having our own bespoke product running alongside the Lloyd Loom portfolio is a successful combination for a number of reasons, not least because both companies firmly believe in “Buying British” and supporting traditional British brands which reflect outstanding craftsmanship. Our association with Lloyd Loom of Spalding is unique in many ways. Both companies have workshops based in Lincolnshire where each has been making high quality furniture for many years. Each piece of furniture made in both workshops is handmade and individually tailored to each customer’s requirements. Keeping to traditional materials and techniques, Lloyd Loom of Spalding have a real passion for their work, which is reflected in the superb quality and timeless elegance of their furniture. It is a pleasure to see traditional methods still being used today in the production of this hand crafted furniture which we hope will inspire a new generation of furniture makers and designers! Whilst St Giles Furniture is rightly proud of our heritage, there are few other companies who can boast such an illustrious identity as Lloyd Loom of Spalding, however both companies enjoy a real “workshop” feel at their Lincolnshire bases, with groups of workers often discussing various aspects of their work in progress since each element of production is highly labour intensive. Lloyd Loom of Spalding has developed close links with local universities enabling design students to experiment with research prototypes to extend the existing range. Similarly, at St Giles Furniture we are actively involved with the National School of Furniture at Bucks New University in a bid to encourage and support up and coming young designers. For the second year running we will be exhibiting designs in our St Giles showroom from students taking the BA (Hons) course in Furniture Design and Craft. If you haven’t been to our showroom recently please do come along and visit us to see all the changes that have taken place and 82

FITTING ‘A’ RATED DOUBLE GLAZING NOW A NECESSITY FOR HOMEOWNERS

W

ith ever increasing energy bills, it really is now more important than ever that UK homeowners replace all inefficient windows and doors in their property with thermally efficient ones. Having said that, to ensure a property gets the full benefit from an investment in double or triple glazing property owners must also insulate the loft properly and install cavity wall insulation or solid wall insulation dependent on the type of house and manner of construction. The seemingly never ending increases in the cost of energy, climate change, when combined with environmental and sustainability reasons, makes the need to insulate dwellings essential, although there is no getting away from the fact that there is an initial investment required to achieve this vital goal. For home owners planning on moving rather than improving, there is still the need to sell their particular premises, as houses that still have single glazed windows are not only expensive to heat, but also unattractive to modern day buyers. Shrewd prospective purchasers will demand that the asking price is reduced by at least the cost of carrying out replacement double glazing and fitting insulation throughout, along with no doubt a premium off the asking price for being the ones “being made” to carry out this essential work. When it comes to selling up, poorly insulated homes are inevitably shown up by the Energy Performance Certificate that all UK house owners are legally obligated to provide to prospective purchasers. Genuine high quality energy rated replacement windows and doors help a property benefit from solar gain, retaining heat whilst massively reducing the amount of energy lost. They do this by not only have thermally broken frames (be they aluminium, composite or UPVC), but also by being professionally fitted in the first place, and by having a high double glazing specification involving Low E Argon filled sealed units with warm edge spacers (which help prevent transference of temperature) and specially coated low iron 84

APRIL2013

glass that maximizes solar gain whilst stops the heat escaping. The energy savings over time from fitting “A” rated replacement double or triple glazing is significant and will eventually pay for the cost of installation, assuming the home owner continues to live in the property. The sheer choice of bespoke replacement windows can be baffling, but as long as an independently certified “A” rated window system is selected from installers with a good reputation, one cannot go far wrong. There are different types of window and finishes available to suit any type of UK property. These include aluminium, timber and UPVC casement windows and tilt and turn windows (both available in double glazing and triple glazing), sliding sash windows, Georgian windows and coloured aluminium windows, the latter of course available in any RAL colour (i.e. any colour you like!). Modern thermally broken “A” rated UPVC triple glazed replacement windows are naturally incredibly thermally efficient, highly secure and available in the same profile as some double glazed UPVC windows, so aesthetically very attractive as well. Alternatively “A” rated aluminium double glazed windows and doors have a slimmer profile, therefore do offer more glass and light, as well as better views, and of course more attractive sight lines. Whichever energy rated fenestration product a property owner chooses, fitting replacement “A” rated double glazed windows or triple glazed windows and doors is a real must for any property owner determined to reduce heating bills, improve home security, add value to their home and improve their day to day living environment. For free professional advice and no obligation quotation on replacement “A” rated double glazed or triple glazed windows, along with double glazed aluminium, composite and UPVC residential doors, telephone 01494 854266 to speak to an experienced Hazlemere Windows home improvement expert, or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk

Not to mention the frantic search for that last exotic ingredient and hours of preparation over a hot oven… But there is a solution. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have all the work done for you within your own home, so you can ensure the personal touch without the stress? Hiring your own Private Chef or Cook is a great way to impress and leaves you absolutely free to devote yourself fully to your guests. Greycoat Lumleys Catering & Hospitality has been matching clients and Chefs successfully for years. Greycoat Lumleys is a dynamic company which prides itself on doing the job quickly and doing the job well.
