BLAZE

OF GLORY THE RIVER & ROWING MUSEUM IS SET ABLAZE WITH HISTORY WITH A NEW 200-YEAR SHOWCASE OF THE ROWING BLAZER

G

eorge Eddy visits Blaze of Glory - a new exhibition, running until May 2014, revealing the history of the rowing blazer at Henley on Thames’ River & Rowing Museum as part of its exciting summer programme. The rowing blazer – it does not spring to mind as the most interesting of topics. However, once you scratch the surface of the history of these colourful jackets, their everyday impracticalities fade away and their intrinsic symbolic legacies come to the fore. The River & Rowing Museum in Henley on Thames has revealed a forgotten story of the rowing blazer, and how it has transformed from being a glorified windcheater to a psychedelic and prestigious item of clothing, celebrating the prowess of sportsmen and their clubs, not just from Henley, but worldwide. The exhibition traces the origins of the word ‘blazer’. There are many different theories explored, but the most popular is a report in 1952 by The Times, describing the vivid scarlet-red flannel coats of the Lady Margaret Boat Club as setting the Thames ‘ablaze’. The Museum has a rare and original example of one of these fiery blazers on display, illustrating its importance as the genesis of this term, which subsequently entered Victorian popular culture in the heydays of British summers on the river. There are also rare and

12

AUGUST2013

unique images of blazers, as the height of summer fashion from the mid 1800s, tracing the development of these garments and provide a window into Thames life nearly 200 years ago. The exhibition also houses

one of only 10 blazers, loaned by 1992 gold medallist Jonny Searle, that was made from curtains at Hampton School to celebrate their record-breaking eight in The exhibition looks at how the rowing blazer evolved from the livery of royal watermen and the uniforms belonging to crews of ceremonial barges, to become the celebrated garments of competitive sportsman. It tells the story of the first Oxford and Cambridge boat race in 1829, and how the

coveted Oxbridge ‘Blue’ is the manifestation of the blazers both teams wore when they competed against each other. This exhibition is part of an exciting and extensive summer activity and events programme for both children and adults alike. ‘Blaze of Glory’ runs until May 2014 on The Rowing Wall

at the River & Rowing Museum in Henley on Thames, RG9 1BF. For more information go to: www.rrm.co.uk To find out more visit rrm.com and follow @River_Rowing on twitter for latest news and updates. The Museum, terrace café and shop are open every day from 10am - 5.30pm.

FROM

CHORLEYWOOD BOOKSHOP

Y

ou may have dined at one of his seafood restaurants, or followed his recent TV gastronomic adventures in India or Germany, or perhaps you’ve bought cakes from his patisserie, fish and chips from his chippie, cheese from his deli or had lessons at his cookery school. Or maybe you’ve just cooked a recipe from one of his 22 books. Rick Stein is everywhere. And now he is heading our way. On 16th September Rick Stein will be coming to Chorleywood to talk about his memoir, Under a Mackerel Sky Rick Stein first appeared on our TV screens in an episode of Floyd on Fish in 1985 and since then he has become a star both here and in Australia, where he co-owns yet another restaurant. In Padstow, Cornwall where he has lived since 1965, he has four acclaimed restaurants and a host of other businesses. He employs approximately 450 people and his impact on the local economy is such that it has been nicknamed Padstein. Stein’s autobiography should make for fascinating reading, as he has experienced tremendous personal highs and lows. At the age of 18 he suffered the trauma of losing his father- who tragically took his own life after suffering from bipolar disorder. Having flunked at school he decided to return to academia as a mature student and was awarded an English degree from

14

AUGUST2013

Oxford University in 1971. After graduating he returned to Padstow and opened a quayside nightclub with a friend. However, the club was closed down by the police, mainly due to frequent brawls with local fishermen. Facing bankruptcy Stein realised the premises still retained a restaurant licence so they opened a bistro in another part of the building. The rest, as they say, is history. Stein will be talking about his autobiography, Under a Mackerel Sky, (published on the 12th September), at the Memorial

Hall at 7.30. Hot on Stein’s heels is a visit from another fascinating personality, award winning novelist Maggie O Farrell. On the 18th September, O’ Farrell will take the floor at the Memorial Hall to talk about her brilliant new book, Instructions for a Heatwave. The story is set in London in July 1976, when Britain baked and water had to be drawn from standpipes. Robert Riordan tells his wife Gretta that he’s going round the corner to buy a newspaper. He doesn’t come back. The search for Robert brings Gretta’s children back home, each with a different idea as to where their father might have gone. Little do they know that their mother holds the secret. Instructions for a Heatwave is O’ Farrell sixth novel and her last book, The Hand that First Held Mine, won the 2010 Costa novel award. She was born in Northern Ireland but grew up in Wales and Scotland. At the age of eight she missed a year of school due to a

viral infection, an event that she subsequently wrote about in The Distance Between Us. A former journalist, O’ Farrell is married to the novelist William Sutcliffe whom she met at Cambridge They live in Edinburgh with their two children. Tickets for both Rick Stein and Maggie O Farrell are available from Chorleywood Bookshop. 01923283566.

local feature CENTURION CLUB 18TH HOLE

Setting New Standards Centurion Club near St Albans opened on July 1st and is already being lauded as one of the finest inland courses in the whole of England. BY COLIN CALLANDER, FORMER EDITOR OF GOLF MONTHLY he Club is owned by an Anglo-Dutch quartet comprising Chairman, Graham Wildish, Managing Director, Scott Evans along with Bert Pronk and André Hendriks and they have spared nothing in their desire to create a private members’ Club of unrivalled quality.

T

The Club’s 7,084-yard par-72 course is jointly designed by Scott Evans and Simon Gidman, a past president of the European Institute of Golf Course Architects. They have succeeded in crafting a modern masterpiece which is destined for a place near the top of the GB & I course ratings. There are a number of things which standout at The Centurion Club and the first is the majestic piece of land the course is built on. It is both picturesque and undulating and the mounds that separate many of the holes will make marvellous vantage points if ever the owners decide to host a top Tour event. The A1 creeping bent grass greens are already in immaculate condition and are sufficiently contoured to make pitching and putting challenging without becoming a chore. It is a course which provides options for the thinking man’s golfer and also enables a player to use every club in the bag. Most courses have a single signature hole but The Centurion Club is spoilt for choice in that department. It opens and closes with spectacular par-5s and in between there is as diverse and inviting a collection of par-3s, par-4s and par-5s as can be found anywhere in the country. The course at Centurion Club can be stretched to over 7,000-yards from the CENTURION CLUB 6TH HOLE

back tees but with five sets of tees it is eminently playable for all standards which is something Gidman is keen to ensure at all the courses he builds. “Our courses are designed to be enjoyed by all golfers and not just by players who can hit the ball 240-yards through the air,” he said. “We want golfers of all abilities to enjoy the experience which is why we have worked hard to provide a variety of different strategic options. “There are many grand holes at The Centurion Club,” he added. “My own favourite might well be the long par-4 6th but it is interesting to note different people often tell you they have a different favourite hole. “The 18th is probably the most spectacular but I’d like to think it’s the sort of course where you’re likely to remember most holes long after you’ve played.” A flexible and varied design is the key to the success of the golf course in Evans opinion. “We have looked to build a course that is fun for golfers of all abilities, but also one that is a good test for the top players from the back tees. The feedback we have received so far suggests that we have achieved that and as it matures over the next few years it’s only going to get better.” Centurion Club is currently offering guided tours for prospective members. There are three categories of membership available: Senate, Centurion and Corporate. Further information about membership is available from Richard Corbett on 01442 510520.

THAMES LANDSCAPES BY LYNDA MINTER

W

ater turned to colour – George Eddy talks to international artist, Lynda Minter, about her new exhibition, which opens on 7 September – 10 November at the River & Rowing Museum.

Over the years, The River & Rowing Museum has always been a great supporter of art – hosting exhibits and workshops both within its walls, as well as all along the banks of the river that surrounds it. Now, the Museum is delighted to welcome a new major selling exhibition, entitled ‘Lynda Minter - Thames Landscapes’, by London-based artist Lynda Minter. The public is invited to come and meet the artist in the Kirkham Gallery on 7, 8 and 21 September between 11am and 3pm. All the paintings, including charcoal, pen, ink and watercolour sketches, will be on sale with prices ranging from £260 to £6,000. Lynda learnt her craft at St. Martin’s School of Art, where she focused on sculpture. She does not limit herself, however, and has explored other artistic mediums, examples of which now make-up collections across the world, from London, Russia through to the USA. She initially moved into painting by experimenting with watercolours and then oils. She has honed her skill, and is now a prolific master of these disciplines. Her romantic, expressive and quintessentially English depictions highlight the essence of the River Thames through vibrant creativity and colours. Lynda is a natural artist and is justly recognised as such by her peers. Speaking to Professor Ken Howard, Royal Academy of Arts, he described Minter’s work: “Painting involves the artist in a long journey and Lynda’s work fills one with anticipation of where it will lead her next. What is sure that it will involve the heart, the head and the hand at a profound level” These qualities can certainly be seen in the selection at the Museum. With the exhibition highlighting what it is to experience 18

AUGUST2013

the Thames in its various guises. the paintings on show document the river’s journey as well as Lynda’s impressions of it - from the rural areas with scullers in the Chilterns, to the bustling Thames of London with images of the Jubilee Pageant and St. Paul’s Cathedral. Lynda has offered over 30 unique, vibrant and abstract river landscapes inspired by Turner, Constable, Soutine and de Stael which explore space, mood and light, and she explains that “[her] paintings are about space, sensation and light. I find the Thames to be a wonderful source of inspiration. I try and harness the energy that the river encompasses: the sun setting hitting the water; occasional boats and rowers making waves; or otherwise still with a little breeze. Perfect, beautiful. I am thrilled to be exhibiting a selection of these works at the River & Rowing Museum, and together we celebrate the River Thames.“ She manages to capture the ever-changing scenes on the Thames by cycling to the river with her sketchbook from her home in Fulham, and, using her bicycle as an easel, she has the freedom to note down changes in the weather, a passing boat or a rower. The awarding-winning River & Rowing Museum, recently ranked in the Top 50 Museums in the world by The Times, announced record visitor numbers last year and looks set for another exciting year of exhibitions, workshops and activities with a jam-packed summer programme for the whole family. ‘Lynda Minter - Thames Landscapes’ runs from 7 September – 10 November 2013, in the Kirkham Gallery at the River & Rowing Museum in Henley on Thames, RG9 1BF. For more information go to: www.rrm.co.uk To find out more visit rrm.com and follow @River_Rowing on twitter for latest news and updates. The Museum, terrace café and shop are open every day from 10am - 5.30pm.

he world recording breaking Napier-Railton one of the most famous names in motorsport history will be attending this year’s Kop Hill Climb courtesy of the Brooklands Museum. John Cobb commissioned the Napier-Railton to be built by Thomson and Taylor based at the Brooklands Track in 1933 to break world speed records and by 1935 it became the fastest vehicle to lap Brooklands Outer Circuit at 143.44 mph, a record never beaten. The Napier-Railton encapsulated the spirit of the era, an era when Speed was King and records fell in its wake. It took big engines to deliver the pace to take records and few come larger or more famous than the Napier-Railtons 24 litre, twelve cylinder Napier ‘Lion’ aero engine, 502 bhp behemoth. Static, the gleaming Napier-Railton is enough to captivate such is its pull, but Kop Hill seeks to enthral, so spectators will be treated to the sight and raucous sound of this legend in action as it takes to the famous hill over the weekend in a titanic legend vs. legend battle. The Kop Hill Climbs grassroots atmosphere mean spectators will be extremely close to the action and while the run will no doubt be quick the memories will last a lifetime! The Napier will be in very good company as many of motorsports most famous sporting marques and special cars will gather at his years Kop Hill Climb in Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire, including the legendary Blower Bentley, the brainchild of famous pre-war racer Sir Henry Birkin, courtesy of the Beaulieu Museum. W.O. Bentley built his first sports car, a 3 litre, in 1919. The successor to this early model was the 4½ Litre which was developed into the famous supercharged, or Blower, model. Bentley himself disapproved of supercharging and the blown cars were largely

developed by Bentley racing driver Sir Henry Birkin. The supercharged version did not have a particularly successful competition record, despite un-blown Bentleys having won the Le Mans 24 Hour Race in 1924, 1927, 1928 and 1929, but it did make one exceptionally fine road car. The supercharger used on the Bentley was the design of engineer Amherst Villiers a great personal friend of author Ian Fleming. Perhaps that is why in Fleming’s original novels Casino Royale, Live and Let Die and Moonraker James Bond drove a battleship grey 4½ Litre Blower Bentley! Next up is the famous ex-Lord Howe racing Talbot, GO 54, part of the legendary 1930’s ‘GO’ team now the only complete surviving pre-war race team. GO 54 will open each days hill climb proceedings waved off by none other than the current Lord Howe with Lady Howe, a Kop Hill Climb Patron, proudly taking the passenger seat. The Talbot team enjoyed huge success, at home on the Brooklands Track, in the Alpine Trials, and at Le Mans. The huge versatility of these four seater touring cars with their flexible 6 cylinder 3 litre cast iron engines was legendary, as was recognised by Fox and Nicholl, who reworking the Talbots each season, organised the semi-works team over this period, gradually improving the power and handling. In 1931 form, as an official Talbot factory entry, GO 54 had won the Glacier Cup in the Alpine Trial, not dropping a single point as

‘W.o. Bentley built his first sports car, a 3 litre, in 1919. the successor to this early model was the 4½ litre which was developed into the famous supercharged, or Blower, model.’ Humfrey Symons and Norman Garrad stormed the summits over seven gruelling days. In October, running GO 54 in stripped form, John Cobb drove the Talbot in the Brooklands 500 race. Lapping at 112 mph he secured 6th place and 2nd in class, despite having to pit, caused by his accidental closing of the radiator shutters. Remarkably, in November GO 54 raced against the Glasgow to Edinburgh train "The Flying Scotsman" as part of a wager; and won. Last Night of the Proms SATURDAY 7TH SEPTEMBER 2013- ROYAL ALBERT HALL, SW7 arin Alsop will make history at the Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall when she becomes the first woman to conduct the world famous final night of The Proms. Alsop conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra through a programme of both traditional and new music, threading together the many exciting themes of the 2013 Proms.

Park, alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra and conductor... An array of acclaimed artists, including, will also take part (more artists will be announced in due course). The Hyde Park event is broadcast live on BBC Radio 2. Highlights of the Last Night celebrations around the country will be included as part of the live coverage on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Radio 3, while digital TV viewers can choose to watch the Royal Albert Hall.

Stars of the classical world, Nigel Kennedy and Joyce DiDonato take to the stage to perform a wide range of popular pieces including Over the Rainbow, Danny Boy, and Williams’ Lark Ascending. Described by conductor Jiri Belohlavek as “the world’s largest and most democratic musical festival”, the much-loved classical celebration now encompasses more than 100 concerts each year.

Fancy dress is an optional extra: from dinner jackets to patriotic T-shirts. Many use the occasion for an exuberant display of Britishness. Union Flags are carried and waved by the Prommers, especially during Rule, Britannia!”. Flags, balloons and party poppers are all welcomed though John Drummond famously discouraged this ‘extraneous noise’ during his tenure as Director of the Proms. Sir Henry Wood’s bust is adorned with a laurel chaplet by representatives of the Promenaders, who often wipe an imaginary bead of sweat from his forehead or make some similar gentle visual joke.

Opening with the world premiere of Anna Clyne’s Masquerade, the Last Night programme includes music by some of the season’s Anniversary composers, including Wagner and Britten, as well as featured composers Williams and Bantock, before closing with the traditional Last Night pieces. The Last Night of the Proms celebrations spill out of the Royal Albert Hall into all four nations of the UK. Each BBC Proms in the Park event has its own popular line-up of artists and presenters, and culminates in a live link-up with the Royal Albert Hall for the second half of the concert, transmitted on BBC One. Nigel Kennedy and Joseph Calleja, both of whom will have featured earlier on in the festival, will perform at BBC Proms in the Park, Hyde 28

AUGUST2013

The Royal Albert Hall could be filled many times over with people wishing to attend the Last Night. Tickets are almost as hard to come by as Centre Court passes for the Wimbledon finals, but the whole thing is broadcast live on the BBC - and all round the world. The product mix is typified by its breadth, as some of the best-loved toys from everyone’s childhood – from My Little Pony to Thomas the Tank Engine and Scalectrix – will sit alongside the latest in learning toy innovation from V-Tech and the world’s first 3D printed dolls, Makies. Barbie & Friends Ascending the escalators from the third floor into the toy shop, visitors will discover a vibrant and magical space where the world’s no.1 doll, Barbie, takes up residence with a dedicated department where children can play and interact with the only brand that allows them to imagine themselves as a mermaid to a movie star, a fairy to a fashionista, and a princess to a president. In the past 50 years, Barbie has established herself as one of the world’s leading fashion icons, and has been dressed by leading design talents including: Alaïa, Burberry, Comme des Garçons, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Prada, Louise Gray and Roksanda Ilincic. More than 100 million metres of fabric have gone into making her fabulous wardrobe and she has had over one billion pairs of gravity-defying shoes, including ones created by Christian Louboutin.

Erin Moscow, Head of Childrenswear and Toys at Selfridges, explains the concept for the new department: “We so often hear that department store shopping can create really cherished memories for families – we’ve taken that to heart in creating this new concept, and have thought incredibly carefully about what unforgettable toy shopping means. This offer is an authoritative and incredibly vibrant edit of what we believe to be the most covetable and exciting toys in the industry. The project has been over a year in the making, and our team have worked hard to ensure that what our visitors will find at Selfridges is put together in a way that can’t be found anywhere else.” Life-size stuffed animals, a ceiling of balloons and screenings of much-loved movies are all part of the colourful and dynamic space, which will be animated by an amazing programme of special events, brand demonstrations and pop-up concepts all year round.

Plush All things soft and cuddly, from Jellycat’s adorable animal toys to the nostalgic collections from Sylvanian Families, can be found in the Plush destination. My Little Pony introduces new friends from the Equestria Girls range – six best friends with a flair for fashion and fun. Each doll in the collection comes stylishly dressed and features her signature ‘cutie splash,’ a unique design similar to the cutie marks on their pony alter egos. Poorly teddy bears in need of TLC are invited to pay a visit to a series of ‘Bear Surgeries’ by Alice Bear, whose range of enchanting soft toys created by illustrator Rikey Austin encourage children to believe in a world where if you talk to your teddy, he just might talk back. Everyone’s favourite interactive friend, and a sell-out for Selfridges last Christmas – Furby – is one of the most anticipated launches of the year.

The new department is ranged into seven easy-to-shop ‘zones’, meaning parents and children alike can navigate the space to find their favourite collections:

Gordon Selfridge ran the store himself until he retired in 1940. After several ownerships the company was de-merged from the Sears Group in 1998, and in 2003 W. Galen Weston purchased Selfridges and under his ownership, Selfridges has become a unique UK destination for fashion, luxury and retail theatre known for its world-class yet egalitarian customer approach. Alistair Kirkwood, managing director of NFLUK, said: “We are really looking forward to giving visitors to Regent Street the opportunity to sample the excitement and razzmatazz of the NFL. The range of activities planned will offer something for everyone; whether a die-hard NFL fan or those who are simply looking for a fun day out or are curious to find out a little bit more about the sport.” The National Football League (NFL) is the most popular professional sport in the United States, with more people naming the NFL as their favourite than all the other professional sports combined. six Super Bowls, and on Sunday October 27 the Jacksonville Jaguars will be at home to the San Francisco 49ers. Since 2007, the NFL has played one competitive, regular-season game every year at Wembley Stadium, with sell-out crowds of around 83,000. The action on-field is supported by a range of activity around London during the week of the game - including public appearances by NFL players and cheerleaders, community events and an NFL Fan Rally, which attracts more than 40,000 people the day before the game. Following the success of Summer Streets, when Regent Street was traffic free for four consecutive Sundays in July, this exciting event will mark a new date in the calendar where shoppers will be able to enjoy a street free of traffic to make the most of their shopping day. London Design Festival 14TH -22ND SEPTEMBER 2013 This September sees one of the most important events on the global design calendar, the London Design Festival in its eleventh year. he London Design Festival is a key constituent of London’s Autumn creative season, alongside London Fashion Week, Frieze Art Fair and the London Film Festival. Established in 2003 its role is to celebrate and promote London as the world’s design capital and gateway to the international design community.

T

spotlight on the most exciting and innovative design talent from across the globe. From the drawing board to the prototype to the finished product, this important sector creates thousands of jobs and generates billions of pounds for our economy and underpins London’s reputation for creativity.” Boris Johnson, Mayor of London

The Festival expects more than 250 partners and over 300 events celebrating the best in design. As ever, the Festival also delivers its own varied programme of commissioned projects with highlights at Tate Modern and at its hub venue, the Victoria and Albert Museum, with a number of site-specific installations.

Following on from the sell-out inaugural event in 2012, the Global Design Forum returns with an enhanced programme in 2013. The event brings together some of the most revered names in the worlds of design, business, branding and innovation to explore how design can make the world a better place. Comprising keynote speeches, panel discussions, fast-paced presentations and Q&A sessions, the Forum creates a rich platform for open discussion and debate. Four main sessions will take place in the Purcell Rooms in the Southbank Centre, involving over 20 high-profile international speakers.

Last year there were 79 shows and events at the Festival’s central hub at the V&A, while the four Design Districts including Brompton Design District, Shoreditch Design Triangle and Fitzrovia Now, hosted over 100 events. The Festival attracted a dedicated – or direct – audience of over 350,000 people, from over 60 countries with a wider audience of over 2m people coming into contact with the major public commissions. The Festival works closely with, and receives financial support directly from, the Mayor’s Office – having transferred support from the London Development Agency. The Festival also receives support from Arts Council England, as a National Portfolio Organisation 2012-15. “This year’s Festival programme is a true reflection of our diverse and creatively dynamic city, with a vast array of events, installations and exhibitions showcasing the huge number of different design disciplines practiced in London.” Sir John Sorrell, Chairman, London Design Festival “I am delighted to back the London Design Festival, which puts the 36

the Xhibitionist Gray Design is pleased to announce the release of it’s latest yacht and car design, the Xhibitionist. Provisional price tag of around 100 million. culpted with the flowing lines of an Art Nouveau masterpiece and heavy tones of automotive styling, the Xhibitionist, with it’s deployable bow platform and reconfigurable interior space breaks new ground in yacht styling and indeed opens a new niche in corporate floating real estate.

S

Redefining Traditions You can be forgiven for thinking, at first glance, that you’re seeing a leaked still from a yet-to-be released, Fifth Element style sci-fi blockbuster. Far from being fiction, though, this yacht has been designed with very real, very modern and very useful applications in mind. It is, first and foremost, a cleverly engineered workhorse; a nautical tool designed to fulfil many different roles. As the name and unconventional appearance may suggest, this is no ordinary yacht. This is something completely different. This is the Xhibitionist. The brainchild of renowned Swedish-based designer, Eduard Gray, the Xhibitionist is partly inspired by traditions as old as seafaring itself. The desire to rekindle some of those traditions in an ultra-modern setting has resulted in, not only, the creation of a jaw-dropping super yacht, but the creation of a veritable entity 42

AUGUST2013

that has almost developed a personality of its own. As much thought has gone into the conception of this vessel in terms of its viability as has gone into the actual structural design itself. It is, quite simply, a masterful blend of style, purpose and efficiency. One of the most striking elements on this one-of-a-kind vessel is the hull. The inverted trimaran configuration has been employed for one overriding reason; stability. That, in itself, speaks volumes about the real reason the Xhibitionist has come about. Futureproof Stability in any line of business can quite often mean going with the flow: literally. The Xhibitionist is endowed with the capability to evolve with and adapt to the pace of change we see in today’s world alongside maintaining its enduring aesthetic appeal. It has been future-proofed in some respects; both in terms of its actual features and its potential ‘lives’, as it were. Unlike a ‘private’ yacht, this versatile yacht has been designed to do a job; or rather, jobs. What those jobs are could vary tremendously but one of them is probably abundantly obvious: this thing has been designed to wantonly, shamelessly, unabashedly and knowingly steal the show.

‘Show’ is, really, at the crux of what the Xhibitionist is all about. Aside from being a ‘show’ unto itself, it has been created in such a way that some of the real showing takes place on the inside. The shape of the outside may give some people a clue as to where we’re heading next. The undeniably automotive lines are testament to Eduard Grays achievements as a designer of supercars (one of which, the Xhibit-G, has been specially created to complement the Xhibitionist). A common first reaction, it has to be said, is just that; ..’it looks like a car’ (indeed, Batman has been mentioned a few times, too). Art-Nouveau Styling As far as investments go, the Xhibitionist resembles more of a real estate and marketing venture than a yacht. If so desired, it can effectively be used as an exclusive, floating showroom. A Steinway piano completes the scene beautifully while the vessel is in ‘guest mode’. The dual staircase by Cornish Stairways adds a homely familiarity to the main exhibition room in its full open glory and the Baccarat lighting perfectly complements the subtle Art-Nouveau styling throughout. In ‘Retail Mode’ the partitions are in place creating many individual spaces for a more private retail experience and the Nuance smart shading feature from Vision Systems provides yet more privacy at the swipe of a fingertip. Sun Lover At the stern is the sprawling beach club area providing space for events closer to the lapping water. It is, as with most yachts, also an access point and will likely be the first place one would set foot on board. Matching pontoon extensions are also an option, should they be required. Above all the fly deck is where the serious relaxation takes place. Two separate areas, one with a jacuzzi, provide guests with ample space to unwind in comfort and take in the views and sunshine.

Sunshine is something the Xhibitionist is particularly fond of, with massive solar panels in operation; a sight to behold in itself. Opening up out of what looks like the hood of a giant sports car, they serve two purposes. The solar panels themselves not only provide power to the vessel; they’re sturdy enough to act as a helipad, concert stage, or whatever else suits the need of the owner. The frontal section that drops down serves the same purpose as its counterpart on aircraft carriers; allowing for access and loading. It is not beyond the realms of imagination: seeing a celebrity DJ or a live band perched on the platform performing in front of ten thousand people in a marina. At the bow of the yacht is another fascinating addition; the viewing window, Jacques Cousteau himself would have approved. Although it’s above water, in this case, it provides a select group of guests with something of a secluded alcove; one with a spectacular view. Floating, Working Asset The Xhibitionist is an intelligently designed and finely tuned instrument that was made, quite simply, to turn heads. More than that, it poses a serious option for investors when comparing to the real estate market in terms of Dollars per square foot and as a key feature in a business model literally represents a floating, working asset. The size alone of the solar panels gives some indication of just how efficient the Xhibitionist can be (and how quietly it can glide into a marina). They also go to provide free energy for the final piece de resistance when talking eye candy..the night time illumination. As though the Xhibitionist weren’t spectacular enough, evening lighting by Ocean LED have ensured that it marks its territory and keeps it long after the sun has set.

His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge T Born George Alexander Louis on 22nd July 2013 at 4.24pm - 8lbs 6oz

he Duchess of Cambridge, formally Kate Middleton, gave birth to the couple’s first child, a son, in the hospital’s private Lindo Wing at St Mary’s Hospital, London... where Princess Diana gave birth to William in 1982 and Harry in 1984. The baby is third in the line of Succession after His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge. He is styled His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge. The baby moves ahead of Prince Harry, who’s now fourth in line. The birth was announced via a formal press release issued by Kensington Palace, which stated that the duchess “was safely delivered of a son” at 4:24 p.m., local time, weighing 8lbs 6oz. News of the royal birth - which came after an 11 hour labour - was not made public by Kensington Palace until 8.29pm, four hours

after the baby was born. Sources said the couple ‘just wanted to spend a little time together to bond as a family’ and inform members of both families privately before the news was announced to the world. William made those calls personally. A bulletin containing details of the birth was taken by car to Buckingham Palace and placed on an easel at the palace gates for the public to see. The framed sheet of paper became the target of a thousand camera flashes as people thrust their smartphones through the railings. The news was greeted with shrieks of “It’s a boy!” and strains of “For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow” Hundreds of Britons and tourists broke into song and dance outside the palace. Champagne bottles popped and shouts of “Hip! Hip! Hooray!” erupted outside Buckingham Palace as Britain welcomed the birth of Prince William and his wife

Kate’s first child, a boy who is now third in line to the British throne. Outside the hospital, a man dressed as a town crier in traditional robes and an extravagant feathered hat shouted the news and rang a bell. London’s landmarks, including the London Eye, lit up in the national colours of red, white and blue, and the city had a party atmosphere unmatched since last summer’s Olympics. Right across the country and indeed right across the Commonwealth people celebrated and wished the royal couple well. Prime Minister David Cameron told waiting reporters in front of 10 Downing Street. “It is an important moment in the life of our nation but I suppose above all it’s a wonderful moment for a warm and loving couple who got a brand new baby boy. It’s been a remarkable few years for our royal family -- a royal wedding that captured people’s hearts, that extraordinary and magnificent Jubilee and now this royal birth, all from a family that have given this nation so much incredible service, and they can know that a proud nation is celebrating with a very proud and happy couple.”

Before mounting the St Mary’s Hospital steps, the smiling Prince of Wales asked journalists who have been stood outside for almost three weeks: ‘Have you been there long?’ When he left around 10 minutes later, Charles said the baby was ‘marvellous’ and told journalists: ‘You’ll see in a minute’ Prince Charles spoke of his joy and pride in becoming a grandparent for the first time. “It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy,” Prince Charles said in a statement. “Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time, and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.” The Queen told guests at a Buckingham Palace reception she was ‘thrilled’ at the birth of her great-grandson. On the eve of the baby’s birth, the Queen famously told a ten-year-old schoolgirl that she didn’t mind if it was a boy or a girl, adding: ‘I would very much like it to arrive. I’m going on holiday’.

The Duke of Cambridge was present for the birth after he and his wife were brought by car from Kensington Palace to St. Mary’s Hospital in London before 6am in the early stages of labour. William joked his new son ‘has a good pair of lungs’ and tells the crowd his child has Kate’s looks and more hair than him. The medical staff present were Mr Marcus Setchell, Surgeon-Gynaecologist, Mr Guy Thorpe-Beeston, Obstetrician and Dr Sunit Godambe, Consultant Neonatologist at St Mary’s Hospital.

Gun salutes sounded across London marked the birth of the royal baby as the armed forces join in the celebrations. The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery and the Honourable Artillery Company carried out the ceremonial royal salutes in honour of the new addition to the Royal Family. Gun salutes are fired for the birth of every prince or princess, no matter where their place is in the line of succession, the Ministry of Defence said. The last royal salute for a birth was for Princess Eugenie in 1990. The King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, wearing full dress uniform, paraded past Buckingham Palace to Green Park where they staged a 41-gun royal salute. They went from their forward mounting base in Wellington Barracks into Green Park, where 71 horses pulled six First World War-era 13-pounder field guns into position for the royal salute. Each of the six guns fired blank artillery rounds at 10-second intervals until 41 shots were fired. The horses and riders then collected the guns and escorted them back to Wellington Barracks.

Carole and Michael Middleton were the first visitors to arrive the following day, with Prince Charles and his wife Camilla following them at 5.30pm after being rushed to London by helicopter after two-days carrying out official duties in Yorkshire.

Major Mark Edward, commanding officer of the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery, said: ‘The opportunity to mark the birth of the child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge by firing a 41-gun royal salute, comes as a huge honour for the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery.’

The Archbishop of Canterbury, meanwhile, said he was “delighted to congratulate the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge on the arrival of their baby boy”.” Along with millions here and around the world, I share in their joy at this special time,” he added. May God bless this family with love, health and happiness in their shared life ahead”

Whilst a royal gun salute normally comprises 21 guns, this is increased to 41 if fired from a royal park or residence. Uniquely, at the Tower of London, which is a royal residence, 62 rounds are fired as this also includes an additional 21 guns for the citizens of the City of London to show their loyalty to the monarch. As soon as William returned to work following his two weeks’ statutory paternity leave, Kate plans to depart the palace for her parents’ mansion in Berkshire. She will reside there - on and off - for a few weeks, while her husband completes his present tour of duty with the RAF in Anglesey, North Wales. The prince will finish his posting as a Search and Rescue pilot at RAF Valley in early September, relocating to London while waiting for his next assignment, meaning the couple can enjoy some quality time together as a new family. Within weeks, by October at the latest, it is hoped that they will finally be able to move into their new official London residence, Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace. Apartment 1A is actually a spacious four-storey, 20room property with its own large south-facing walled garden, which takes up half the Clock Tower wing originally designed by Sir Christopher Wren for King William and Queen Mary. The couple have drafted in a key servant to help them look after Prince George: their housekeeper, Antonella Fresolone, hired as the couple’s “righthand woman” in May, was spotted decamping to Bucklebury, Berkshire, with the new family of three. William, Kate and their son are staying with Michael and Carole Middleton at their £4.7million Georgian Grade II listed mansion while the renovations at their new home at Kensington Palace near completion. Although the couple have so far shunned a large entourage, it seems they could not do without their Italian multitasker, who was poached from Buckingham Palace, where she worked for 13 years as one of the Queen’s three top housemaids. Palace officials confirmed for the first time last night that the couple will not have a nanny and rely upon their families help instead, saying: ‘They have both got families that will care hugely for this baby’ Royal officials say Kate and William will try to give their child as normal an upbringing as possible, a challenging goal in an age when the British royals are treated as major world celebrities. Buckingham Palace held celebratory drinks parties at the end of the one of the most exciting Royal weeks, also held at Windsor Castle and Holyrood Palace, Her Majesty’s official Scottish residence in Edinburgh. The Palace invitation said staff could enjoy a “glass of champagne” to celebrate the “royal birth” in the dining room between 11.30am and 1.30pm. At Windsor Castle they were told to gather in The Undercroft between noon and 2pm 48

AUGUST2013

and staff at Holyrood in the coffee shop and Abbey Strand. One courtier said: “The Queen is on Cloud Nine at the moment and wanted to share her happiness with her hard-working staff, so the obvious thing to do was to get out the champagne” The Queen, 87, is thrilled to have seen her great-grandson, George Alexander Louis, at Kensington Palace, the day after he was born. She then completed her duties before travelling up to Scotland to spend the summer at Balmoral. , Prince Philip has been convalescing at Sandringham following abdominal surgery in June. This means the 92-year-old Duke could not meet his great-grandson until he and the Queen return from Royal Deeside at the beginning of October. The Royal Baby’s title follows the dukedom bestowed on William by his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, on his wedding day in 2011. Earlier this year, the queen issued a royal decree allowing this royal baby -- and all of William and Kate’s children -- to be titled prince or princess. The decree said “that all the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales should have and enjoy the style, title and attribute of royal highness with the titular dignity of Prince or Princess prefixed to their Christian names or with such other titles of honour.” The baby’s gender had been of particular interest because the prospect of Kate’s pregnancy had prompted a change in the laws of succession to ensure that a daughter would not be passed over for the crown by a younger brother. No one can tell what political and personal changes the intervening years will bring, but the baby can be expected to become the head of state of 16 countries, including Britain, Australia and Canada. The child will also eventually become Supreme Governor of the Church of England. The little prince represents a living link to Britain’s imperial history as the great-greatgreat-great-great-grandchild of Queen Victoria, who ruled at the peak of British power. No date has yet been set for when the baby will be christened, but it is likely to be some time in the autumn, when the Royal family return from their summer break at Balmoral. The Duke of Cambridge, for example, was christened six weeks after his birth, in the Music Room of Buckingham Palace, using water drawn from the River Jordan in the Holy Land, in keeping with a tradition dating back to the Crusades. Another royal tradition is for babies to wear a lace and satin christening robe made in 1841 and worn by all of Queen Victoria’s children and every generation of royal babies since, including Prince William.

Why George Alexander Louis? It is a partial victory for the old maxim, “the bookmakers are never wrong”. George was the rock-solid favourite for boys’ names for a while, backed all the way down to 2/1. Alexander and Louis were both not far behind. Of the three names, it is the significance of the third that is most obvious. Louis immediately makes one think of Louis Mountbatten, uncle of Prince Philip and last viceroy of India, who was killed by the IRA in a bomb attack on his yacht. His father Prince Louis of Battenberg was Prince William’s great-great-grandfather. Louis is also one of William’s middle names. And, of course, the name of 17 kings of France (or 18 or 19, depending how you count). If Louis honours one side of the Royal Family, George clearly resonates with the other.

It was his son George VI whose struggles with his stutter are so movingly depicted in The King’s Speech. Christened Albert and known to his family as Bertie, but crowned as George, he’s a reminder that the monarch has the final say on their regal name.

Despite St George being the patron saint of England, it took the arrival of a German king, George I, to cement the name’s place in England. Long a popular name in Germany, it has Greek roots.

Prince Harry has said he is determined to make sure his nephew has fun in life - and joked about his babysitting fees. The proud uncle was one of the first family members to meet the Royal baby and said: “When I saw him he was crying his eyes out like all babies do I suppose.”

There have since been five other Georges to sit on the throne. George III, king during the loss of the American colonies, is perhaps now best known for his mental illness thanks to Alan Bennett’s play and the subsequent film adaptation. The most recent Georges reigned through two world wars. It was George V who declared war on Germany in 1914, pitting him against his first cousin, Kaiser Wilhelm II. George V recognised the strength of anti-German feeling and changed the Royal Family’s name from the House of SaxeCoburg and Gotha to the more English sounding Windsor.

On the other hand, Alexander has never been the name of a king of England or the UK, but was borne by three kings of Scotland. Prince Harry planning a party for the arrival of his nephew, Prince George. Prince Harry gave his first reaction to becoming an uncle, saying he will keep the newest member of the family out of harm’s way.

The 28-year-old is reportedly organising a party for the royal baby with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s blessing. Prince Harry is already taking his new role of uncle very seriously, reportedly organising a huge party to celebrate the birth of his nephew Prince George. The Prince is putting his reputation as the wildest member of the royal family to good use as he plans to wet the baby’s head and Kate and William have given him their blessing. “”He has had calls made already and William has agreed to it. Kate is fine - it’s tradition.”

the essence of our skills and our vision in a bottle,” says Silvio Denz, CEO of Lalique. The collaboration between Bentley and Art & Fragrance, owner of Lalique, creates the bespoke ‘Lalique for Bentley Crystal Edition’, an impressive crystal flacon with the legendary ‘Flying B’ Bentley mascot. Finely wrought in gleaming crystal, the dynamic styling of its wings epitomises timeless beauty.

same importance with the preciousness of the crystal artwork and the uniqueness of the essence treasured by its delicate flacon”. The eau de parfum itself, composed by Mylène Alran, from the French perfume house Robertet, is a fitting elixir of fine woody notes and exquisite leather to complement the epicentres of excellence within Bentley’s craftsmanship. Further, precious orris butter accord enriches the scent to create a sensual and charismatic character. The ‘Lalique for Bentley Crystal Edition’ showcases the finest glassmaking expertise and is limited to only 999 pieces, available at a number of carefully selected retailers from April 2013. ‘Bentley for Men’ and ‘Intense’ range The ‘Bentley for Men’ and the high-impact ‘Bentley for Men Intense’ fragrances are created by top French perfumer Nathalie Lorson, from the perfume house Firmenich. She has skilfully transformed the quintessence of the luxury automotive brand Bentley into a superb and unmistakeable fragrance experience. To do so, the finest perfume raw ingredients have been used, including those must-haves for Bentley’s debut fragrance, fine wood and leather notes. “I chose cedar because of its powerful unadulterated scent and patchouli for its sensual depth and natural elegance,” explains Nathalie.

The ‘Intense’ version will take these notes to another level by infusing the rich scent with aromatic African geranium. The bottle design echoes the luxury of the cars with an elegant symmetrical shape, striking appeal and a knurled ring around the top. Both captivating Bentley fragrances will be available at selected perfumeries and department stores from April 2013.

I’ I’ve ve hear heard d that hypnotherapy hypnotherap py can help help,, is this tr true ue and what w would ould itt inv involve? volv olv ve? Hypnotherapy is a ver very effective way to address phobias and fears. Phobias bias dev velop elop when the part of our brain that is responsible for our responses to danger gets confused, causing extreme reactions to situations that represent only moderate danger. This usually happens early in life, and if you are aware of the original cause of your phobia, this is a big help when seeking treatment; however even if you are not aware of the cause then hypnotherapy can still help. You are correct that phobias can be passed on to children,, so if y you ou can address this then there is less likelihood that your son will develop the same fear. A clinical hypnotherapist will help you - using hypnosis and related techniques - to ‘reprogramme’ your automatic responses to the situations that trigger y your our phobic reactions. Hypnotherapy is a safe and painless process, which most people find to be ver very relaxing. The trouble with dieting, as you mention, is that it tends to focus on what we can’t have, when the real success comes from finding enjoyable foods that you want to eat and that fill you up. Base se yo our meal plans on foods with a low gly ycaemic y caemic load (GL) - those that release their sugars slowly and keep you fuller for longer. Focus on managing portion sizes of starchy carbohydrates; include good quality protein from animal or vegetarian sources, good fats such as avocado, oily fish, nuts & oliv ve e oil and dramatically increase vegetable intake. Fruit is encouraged but limited according to its glycaemic effect (i.e. berries = lots! Bananas = go slow). This is not really a diet, more of an eating plan, which is great news as it satisfies hunger, moderates glucose lev vels els, improves cardiac risk factors such as cholesterol levels, and is highly sustainable. GLOW ON A DETOX WITH BIKINI SEASON LOOMING, HOLLYWOOD NUTRITIONIST KIMBERLY SNYDER TELLS LISA HAYNES HOW TO GET GLOWING ON A BEAUTY DETOX.

I

t might feel as though we've only just ditched our winter coats, but bikini season is just around the corner. If the late onset of summer means you're still sporting dull, pasty skin and winter excess baggage on your body, look to your larder for a seasonal change of gear. As a Hollywood nutritionist and author of Beauty Detox Solution, Kimberly Snyder's philosophy is that you can eat your way to radiant skin and an enviable body - no faddy diets or silly fasts required. Having helped countless high-profile celebrities prepare for the red carpet, her quick fixes could transform you into a summer star too. "What we eat affects not only our weight and our overall health, but also our hair, skin and nails - all the features that make us beautiful. To unlock that beauty, one needs to cleanse from within," Snyder says. So head to the supermarket and stock up on ingredients for a beautiful summer. FOOD PHILOSOPHY Forget calorie and carb counting and look to the foods that affect how you look and feel. "The skin is our largest organ and functions like a mirror of what's going on inside the body," Snyder explains. "Fruits and vegetables have powerful minerals and enzymes that promote beauty from the inside out." The fibre-packed glowing green smoothie (see recipe below) is one of Snyder's beauty detox foundations. It's an easy way to incorporate a large amount of greens into your diet - just one serving contains more than three cups of dark leafy green vegetables, which is more than most people eat in a week. Snyder says: "All the nutrients and vitamins and minerals get into your system and the fibre cleans you out. Even if you don't change the rest of your diet and have this smoothie instead of your usual breakfast, this can make a real difference." A beauty detox is about making progress, not perfection, according to Snyder. She suggests starting off by drinking hot lemon and water in the mornings, swapping dairy cheese for goat's cheese, and if you can't resist chocolate, switch to good quality dark stuff. QUICK FIXES You won't wake up looking like a supermodel after a day of healthy eating but there are quick fixes to help kick-start your body beautiful mission. Snyder says: "If you're gearing up for summer there are speedy tricks to give you a boost but often people start to feel and look good and want to continue." She suggests aiming to consume the juice of two lemons a day, whether it's with water or squeezed onto salads or spinach: "Lemon supports your liver and has lots of vitamin C so it will assist with your beach body goals." Aim to order your meals light to heavy, throughout the day, avoiding a big lunch you will struggle to digest. If you're feeling bloated, drink natural cranberry concentrate an hour before bedtime, diluted with water. "A lot of people hold 'water weight', which makes you look puffy, especially if you consume a lot of salt," Snyder explains. "Cranberry concentrate makes your kidney push out the excess salts and water." Just a few tweaks to your daily diet and you should see results in as little as three days, according to Snyder: "The combination of losing the water weight and getting the energy from the glowing green smoothie - your skin starts to glow, your eyes look brighter, and extra weight starts to fall off."

fashion beauty BEAUTY BOOSTERS Certain foods and ingredients have beautifying properties that you can incorporate into your everyday diet. Snyder recommends: ● Pumpkin seeds are a major beautifying food, as they are loaded with our beauty minerals zinc, calcium, potassium and magnesium, as well as B vitamins and collagen-repairing vitamin C and vitamin E. ● Lemon is an amazing cleanser with more than 200 enzymes. It is one of the most restorative foods for the liver. ● Parsley is rich in beauty vitamins A and C, folic acid and has flavonoids that act as antioxidants to help stop free radicals that can damage cells and speed up ageing. ● Turmeric is an ayurvedic spice that has amazing antioxidant properties. It inhibits oxidation and protects from free radical damage, and also helps clean up metabolic waste and supports the liver. ● Red peppers are bursting with vitamins A, C and K. The important antioxidant vitamins A and C help prevent cell damage and premature ageing, and reduce inflammation. They can also help strengthen collagen, helping to reduce cellulite. GLOWING GREEN SMOOTHIE Snyder swears by the GGS (Glowing Green Smoothie) to really make a difference to your diet. "It's an amazing thing to do for summer and bikini season. You get a lot of energy and your skin starts to glow," she says. Here's how to make one using a blender: 500ml water ½ head of organic spinach 1 head organic romaine Juice of ½ organic lemon 3-4 sticks organic celery 1 organic banana 1 organic pear 1 organic apple Method Fill the blender with the water, spinach and romaine and blend until smooth. Add the celery, apple and pear and blend until smooth. Add the lemon juice and banana for the final blend and enjoy!

SMELLS LIKE SUMMER

R

eplace your signature fragrance with a summer scent. Lisa Haynes reveals this season's hottest limited editions. After non-stop April showers and floods, we've never needed a taste of summer like we do now. Thankfully a spritz of fragrance can be evocative of blue skies, white beaches and frothy oceans, whatever the weather outside. So take full advantage of the scent-switching season. Just as our clothing layers become lighter, so too should our fragrance - think eau de toilette or eau fraiche. Even long-established classic scents like Jean Paul Gaultier, Calvin Klein and Issey Miyake lighten up for the sunshine season with refreshing alternatives. "Wintery perfumes tend to be spicier, heavier and more complex than summer fragrances so by the time the sunshine hits, people are usually ready for a change," explains 58

have just been asked to take part in a television programme concerning the life and work of Thomas Chippendale. Organised by a team of charming young people I was at first dismayed at the banality of the questions I had to answer but soon realised that research was needed for me to answer them concisely and to provide the information they knew the audience would want to receive. Rather like the Delia Smith situation when she brilliantly recognised that there was a large group of people who did not know how to boil an egg. So research I had to do and in the course of that a couple of extraordinary events or more accurately discoveries were made. About a year ago I sat with a colleague and watched with interest how he surfed the internet searching through catalogues of auction sales. I don’t remember the last time I bought anything at auction – my supply of fine antiques comes directly from private ownership – and I certainly wouldn’t buy anything without seeing it. However, my chum pointed out a sale in the North of England where there were several quite good-looking pieces. One was a pole screen with a needlework banner. It was described as mid-18th century and indeed it looked to be so. Catching the infectious enthusiasm as he was busily phoning through his bid prices to the auction house I ventured that I would gamble the auctioneer’s upper estimate because I like pole screens, although they are the devil to sell. It was with mixed feelings that learned later that my bid had been successful and I was the proud owner of the said screen and had to drive north for three hours to collect it. Worse still, when I saw it I was disappointed. The needlework looked patched, the stand was plain and the only redeeming feature in my eyes was a panel of early 18th c. Chinese wallpaper used as a backing. When I took it apart the needlework was in fact not patched and the colours were 60

CONRAN BOOK CHAIR

good, and the stand responded well to a wax. So out it went on display. Now back to my research. There are many reference books on Chippendale but the ones acknowledged as the most reliable are those by Christopher Gilbert. Flicking through the illustrated part of his The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale I happened upon ‘Screens’ and there, believe it or not, was my screen. I actually owned a piece of furniture by the great man. Imagine the elation. Not so much a financial gain as more an academic ‘find’; a missing piece of history which hopefully soon now will be appropriately housed, curated and on display for all to see. I was actually looking for images of chairs, of a sort frequently associated with Chippendale and so much illustrated in his Gentleman & Cabinet Maker’s Director. I have long been associated with such a chair – illustrated – and always considered it to be c. 1755 and after Chippendale.

(However precisely the same in design and execution to a proven Chippendale piece, unless there is documentation such as invoices or delivery receipts as evidence of provenance, one can never claim definite origins of a piece of furniture being Chippendale’s workshop.) This chair has one distinctive feature at the back of each front foot, a curious little crest created by the swept back scroll from the front and to date by repute known as peculiar to one designer, Matthias Lock but I had never put time into checking all available material. In the further course of my searches, I was scanning some images from the collection in the Victoria & Albert Museum when I saw a drawing of a chair, not by Chippendale but Lock, and there clearly shown is that same little crest. Lock was a prominent designer and maker and his drawings pre-date the publication of Chippendale’s Director. His designs are considered stronger than Chippendale but he was certainly a disciple by the 1750’s, subsequently working successfully in the classical style of Robert Adam in contrast to the high-style rococo for which

he is better known. Now happy that I have convincing evidence of an earlier date for the chair than originally thought I remembered that it is also illustrated in Judith Miller’s latest definitive volume entitled Chairs. This is a highly recommendable book containing lavish illustrations and notes on over 100 of Judith’s favourite chairs from 1640 – 2007. The trouble with research is that you get sidetracked and I started to reflect on one of the questions I had to answer for the TV programme which was “ How did seat furniture affect us socially?” Well of course it didn’t. We affected it. Chairs, settees, sofas and couches were designed to fit our body shapes but more importantly to accommodate the clothes we wore and so, chairs in particular, mirrored our fashion, style and deportment more accurately than any other item in the course of our modern history. A mid-18th century chair with its wide seat, broad back and scrolling legs reflects the wide frock coats or hooped dresses and general ‘look’ of the period whereas a chair of the 1790’s with its delicate narrow seat and back and slender legs were properly suited to the gentler behaviour and thinner clothes of the neo-classical era. And so we get diverted to climate change, for the wearing by women of diaphanous ‘Empire line’ dresses could only have been practical in a warmer climate than we had had in England until the 1780’s. But it did warm up, and for a decade we saw such heat waves as enabled classical poses to be adopted, such as reclining on a sofa, a position quite impossible as well as undignified, in a hooped skirt. And so a table was designed to pull over the end of the sofa, and the sofa table was born, thanks to climate change. Now you know that if you are offered a George II sofa table – it cannot be. So I remain most grateful to the young people who put those seemingly banal questions to me, I’ve learnt a lot ■

AGAPANTHUS

ECHINACEA PURPUREA

SAVE YOUR GARDEN FROM A DROUGHT TIPS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR GARDEN MORE DROUGHT RESISTANT - PLUS, FIND OUT WHAT ELSE NEEDS DOING IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH. BY HANNAH STEPHENSON

ur sweltering July probably prompted many gardeners to reach for the hosepipe. In fact, according to The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), less than 3% of the annual water consumption of an average household is estimated to be from garden use, but at peak demand times as much as 70% of water supplied may be used in gardens. This doesn't have to be the case though. Rainwater collected in water butts, waste water from the kitchen and grey water from the bathroom can all be used to water plants. Or, maybe, the ultimate solution is simply to create a garden that doesn't need much watering in the first place. This doesn't mean creating a desert garden devoid of colour. Dramatic flowerbeds can easily be achieved from plants that have very low moisture and maintenance demands. Many drought-resistant plants naturally form communities of plants which all thrive in the same conditions and come from similar Mediterranean habitats. At the front of the border you could have dwarf lavender, Sedum spectabile, lamb's ears and ornamental grass such as stipa tenuissima, while middle-sized drought-resistant plants include Echinacea purpurea 'Magnus', Erysimum 'Bowles's Mauve' (wallflower), Russian sage and Nepeta 'Six Hills Giant' (catmint). At the back of the border you could use species more than 1.8m tall, including Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple', Choisya ternata (Mexican orange blossom) and Trachelospermum jasminoides. Most drought-tolerant plants will have either aromatic leaves, fleshy and succulent leaves (which store moisture for dry spells), grey leaves, hairy leaves (which shade themselves with their own hairs), long narrow leaves (which are good at shedding heat without water), or spikes (which act as 'fins' to cool the plant). The RHS offers these extra tips to create a more drought-resistant, but still attractive, garden: Cultivate the soil deeply and dig in large quantities of organic matter to improve soil structure, water retention and water availability for plants. Well-rotted garden compost, mushroom compost, composted bark and well-rotted farmyard manure are all suitable forms of organic matter. Heavy manuring can add nearly a month's worth of water storage capacity to the soil. Loam-based potting compost doesn't dry out as quickly as peat-free composts. If using peat-free, water-retaining gels might have some benefit. Apply sufficient fertiliser as plants use water most efficiently where nutrient levels are adequate. But do not apply too much fertiliser to the soil, as this can encourage too much lush growth which can flop in summer, requiring extra watering and becoming frost-damaged in winter. Choose plants with grey-green or silver leaves as they reflect the sun's rays, helping to conserve moisture within the plant tissues. Try to choose plants which suit the site's soil type and aspect. They will be more tolerant of varying climatic conditions as well as of pest and disease problems. Plant things while they are still small. They will develop much greater resilience as they adapt to their conditions from a young age. Ideally plant in autumn so they can do some growing before dry weather arrives. If planting Mediterranean plants, do so in spring when the soil is warming up. Many of these plants will suffer from root-rot if planted in autumn and become cold and damp over winter. Before planting, thoroughly soak the plants in their pots in a bucket of water until the bubbles stop rising to the surface. Thoroughly water in all new plants (and keep them watered in the first season after planting to ensure they establish well). Once established, they will become much more drought tolerant. After planting, mulch the bed with 5-7.5cm (2-3in) of gravel or, even better, a layer of compost or straw covered with gravel, to help retain moisture while the plants establish. You may decide to go without a lawn in your drought-friendly garden, but if not, you'll be pleased to know that lawns are surprisingly drought tolerant and usually recover well in the autumn rains even if they have been brown and parched most of the summer. Lawn irrigation should rarely be required, if at all, to keep the grass healthy. For more information, visit www.rhs.org.uk BEST OF THE BUNCH - AGAPANTHUS While we're on the subject of dry conditions, think about featuring some agapanthus in your garden. Producing stems bearing stunning blue or white lollipop flowers, these South African herbaceous perennials give a very welcome burst of colour in midsummer. All have strap-like leaves and generally the deciduous types are the hardier hybrids as opposed to the species, which are evergreen but often tender. They are regularly offered for sale by colour rather than variety and grow from 60-120cm (24-48in). Those labelled blue or white are usually Agapanthus campanulatus, with large heads of flowers on 90cm stems. They need a hot, sunny situation to flower and a reasonable amount of moisture during the growing season. They make excellent single subjects in containers. Use a loam-based compost with added grit in a large terracotta pot and don't repot them too frequently as they produce more flowers when pot-bound. If you're planting them in a border, they combine well with soft yellow, apricot, silver or grey plants. Good varieties include the 'Headbourne Hybrids' as they are among the hardiest. Recommended named varieties include 'Bressingham Blue'.

MINT

GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT - FREEZING HERBS Soft-leaved plants such as chervil, chives, coriander, dill, fennel, mint and parsley keep well when frozen. Cut small sprigs from the plants and wash the leaves. Put the herbs in a colander and immerse in salt water for 15-30 minutes to clean them thoroughly. Rinse under running water and shake well. Pat dry with kitchen paper. Chives should be chopped up before sprinkling on a tray or plate to open freeze, then packed into small cartons. Other herbs can be frozen in freezer bags, removed while still frozen and crunched up, then stored in containers. Crunch them up as quickly as possible, as herbs defrost rapidly.

LAVENDAR

Alternatively add herbs to water in ice-cube trays so you can extract a couple of herb ice cubes when you want to add flavour to soups and casseroles. THREE WAYS TO... BOOST YOUR LETTUCES 1. Site summer lettuces in light shade. During other seasons they can be planted in an open, sunny spot. 2. As seeds become dormant in hot weather, make summer sowings in the afternoon and cover them with damp newspaper for 24 hours to keep cool. 3. Mulch plants on dry soils to prevent them from bolting too early.

WHAT TO DO THIS MONTH Check watering requirements daily. In hot, dry weather, container plants may need watering more than once a day If you are saving seed from plants, check to make sure you harvest when the seeds are ripe but before they begin to shed Take the last crop of cuttings this year from pinks Pinch out the growing tips of fuchsias to increase the number of shoots available for cuttings Top up your pond with fresh water CORIANDER

Feed tomato plants regularly Make sure leafy vegetables such as lettuces and spinach, fruiting crops such as tomatoes and marrows, and beans and peas get enough water. Start preparing ground for a new lawn, so that sowing or turfing can take place in September Give evergreen hedges a trim to allow new growth to harden before the advent of frost Unless required for aesthetic purposes, shorten stems of Jerusalem artichokes to about 30cm (12in) to reduce the risk of them blowing over Sow Brompton stocks now for flowering under glass in late spring Sow maincrop turnips for lifting in mid October Stop outdoor tomatoes when they have set four trusses. Leave at least two leaves above the top truss to draw sap

For home owners planning on moving rather than improving, there is still the basic requirement of actually being able to sell their particular premises, as houses that still have single glazed windows are not only expensive to heat, but also unattractive to modern day buyers. Shrewd prospective purchasers will demand to reduce the asking price by at least the cost of carrying out replacement double glazing and fitting insulation throughout, along with no doubt a heavy extra discount off the asking price for being the ones “being made” to carry out this essential work. When it comes to selling up, poorly insulated homes are inevitably shown up by the Energy Performance Certificate that all UK house owners are legally obligated to provide to prospective purchasers. The energy savings over time from fitting replacement double or triple glazing are significant and will eventually pay for the cost of installation. High quality energy rated replacement windows and doors help a property benefit from solar gain, retaining heat whilst massively reducing the amount of energy lost. They do this by not only have thermally broken frames (be they aluminium, composite or UPVC), but also by being properly fitted in the first place and by having a high double glazing specification involving Low emissivity Argon or Krypton filled sealed units with warm edge spacers (which help prevent transference of temperature) and specially coated glass that maximizes solar gain whilst stops the heat escaping.

The sheer choice of bespoke replacement windows can be baffling, but as long as an independently certified “A”, “B” or “C” rated window system is selected one cannot go far wrong. There are different types of window and finishes available to suit any type of UK property. These include aluminium, timber and UPVC casement windows and tilt and turn windows (both available in double glazing and triple glazing), sliding sash windows, Georgian windows and coloured aluminium windows, the latter of course usually available in any highly durable RAL powder coated finish (i.e. any colour you like!). Modern thermally broken “A” rated UPVC triple glazed replacement windows are naturally incredibly thermally efficient, highly secure and available in some cases in the same slimmer profiles as double glazed UPVC windows, so aesthetically very attractive as well. Alternatively “A” rated aluminium double glazed windows and doors have a slimmer profile, therefore do offer more glass and light, as well as better views and of course more attractive sight lines. Whichever energy rated fenestration product a property owner chooses, fitting replacement “A” rated double glazed windows or triple glazed windows and doors is a real must for any property owner determined to reduce heating bills, improve home security, add value to their home and improve their day to day living environment. For free professional advice on replacement “A” rated double glazed or triple glazed windows, along with double glazed aluminium, composite and UPVC residential doors, telephone 01494 854266 to speak to an experienced Hazlemere Windows home improvement expert, or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk AU GU ST2013 71

MAKE THE WALLS YOUR OWN

78

AUGUST2013

T

reasured photos and fabrics can easily and affordably be transformed into striking wallcoverings which tell a story about your life and style, says Abi Jackson. Choosing wallpaper was once a case of flicking through samples, or browsing row after row of patterned rolls in a homeware or DIY store. With wallpaper enjoying a revival, the choice of classic or new designs is certainly vast but there's another option that could make your walls special - choosing your own images to create unique papers. It's affordable and easy because one of the most notable wallpaper trends right now is for bespoke designs, with companies using cutting-edge technology to create high-quality wallpaper based on a picture or item you've fallen in love with, a compilation of beloved family photos or just one striking holiday snap for a mural. What better use for those beautiful photos which in most cases never graduate to an album and instead spend an eternity stored on a computer or mobile? "Having your photos made into wallpaper is an innovative and lovely way of using them," says Victoria Wayland-Smith of Life On A Wall, which turns photo collections into collage-style wallpaper. A choice of three design formats (classic, random and grid) are currently available, starting from £80 per square metre. Creating the paper takes around two to three weeks. Customers simply submit their hi-res photos via the website, and will be sent a proof of the design to approve before it's printed. "People are taking more photos than they used to and my job is organising people's photographs for them - primarily into photo-books. The wallpaper concept was a natural extension of this," says Wayland-Smith. "Photographs are so precious and evoke so special many memories that people are looking at different ways to get them off of their computer and display them, and digital printing gives us so many more opportunities and flexibility than we've had in the past." Swedish company Photowall also produces unique wallpaper and wall murals. Customers can either upload their own image to the site, or choose from the website's catalogue, which includes iconic skylines, tropical paradise scenes, maps and much more. Prices vary from £26 to £37 per square metre, and completed wallpaper will usually be shipped to the customer within a week of their order being placed. "The interest in interior design is steadily growing bigger, and so is the desire to have a unique and personal home," says Ida Gustafsson, marketing spokesperson at Photowall. "We have always wanted to frame our favourite pictures from holidays or of family and pets, and now we can take it a step further and cover a whole wall." Travel and holiday snaps are among the most popular photos customers choose to have transformed, as well as treasured photos of their children and family. Creatively Different takes the service a step further. As well as

p74-BUCKS-WALLS__ 21/08/2013 11:51 Page 2

bespoke wall coverings, clients can have a matching design printed onto blinds. Again, homeowners can select a design from the company's catalogue, submit their own images, or request a unique design be created for them. Price per paper roll is around £52.80 for customers' own images, and around £66 when catalogue designs are used. Bespoke wallpaper isn't all about the modern age of digital photography, though. In fact, for some it's an opportunity to revisit bygone eras. UK design and print specialist Space Innovation offers a range of bespoke print and wallpaper/murals services, which includes bringing vintage designs back to life. This could be a vintage wallpaper design no longer in production, or the cover of a book, or even the print on a fabric - the possibilities are endless. "'Vintage Jigsaw' and 'Favourite Frock' were both bespoke commissions from a client's own vintage collection," says the company's Georges Icke. "For 'Kids' Bathroom', the client bought a roll of 1950s discontinued wallpaper from a flea market in New York which we digitally reproduced and tidied up before printing five rolls for her own use." It also has access to a fabric archive from Warner Fabrics which it can use to create wallcoverings ranging from space odysseys with rockets to classic toile de jouy. Costing from £60 per roll for repeating patterns, and £30 per square metre for print-to-fit single images, the whole process takes around 15-20 working days, and customers can submit requests and specifications entirely online. Being digital design experts, Space Innovation can work with a wide range of design 'sources', and spruce up worn and faded images if required. "Our wallpaper is 'paste-the-wall' quality, making for quick, easy and clean installation by any competent DIY-er or decorator," says Icke. "As the market becomes increasingly digital-savvy and people are looking for something individual and unique, so the inquiries we receive become more creatively varied and interesting. "These have included vintage book covers and pages, blueprints and sporting memorabilia." Another supplier, Mr Perswall, has a Nostalgia collection designed to trigger memories as well as a pop design range featuring 20th century style icons including Bridget Bardot, Sean Connery, Bob Dylan and Jackie Onassis. Alternatively, the company can transform old letters, beautiful lace, favourite record sleeves, photos or children's drawings into a memorable wall covering. It costs from £27 a square metre for paper that you've designed with a motif of your own. The company charges extra to scan in a motif. It can also create customised patterns. If you're looking for inspiration for designs, prints or quirky ideas, a new book, Wallpaper: A Collection of Modern Prints by Charlotte Abrahams (Quadrille, £14.99, available September 12) is bursting with them. It features reproductions of more than 150 papers by established designers and new talents. oasting a mild climate, The Channel Islands are a haven for local produce, rich in natural ingredients from both the sea and the land. Today, the islands still produce an amazing variety of high quality fruit and vegetables with local varieties from grapes and melons to beans and potatoes. Hedge Veg stalls have become an iconic symbol of island life. The small handmade wooden boxes that perch on the island's hedgerows are filled with fruit and veg, flowers and eggs, jams and chutneys, all for sale. the Islands' more rural roads and it won't be long before you come across one. As well as the popular Hedge Veg stalls, a number of farmer's markets have sprung up. Far from dying out, many islanders have even gone one step further and are now rearing a smallholding of chickens, goats, pigs and even bees. It is hard to match the quality of the seafood found around the Bailiwick’s coastline. The often unforgiving waters have been fished for hundreds of years and are home to a staggering variety of seafood. arah Murray, proprietor of Beechwood Fine Foods in Tring, Hertfordshire, has recently received three Gold awards at the Guild of Fine Foods 'Great Taste Awards 2013'. The Guild is nationally recognised for promoting excellence in speciality foods in the independent retail

sector. As Sarah explained, “The Gold Awards are rated 1, 2 or 3 stars and 1 star products are described as 'perfect', 2 stars are 'faultless' and three stars ‘wow you must taste this product’!” 50 days of judging 9,700 food and drink products from 2,100 producers saw these fabulous awards for Sarah’s own-brand jams, preserves and chutneys, namely: • Beechwood Fine Foods Victoria Plum Jam – Gold 2 star award • Beechwood Fine Foods Boozy Berry Jam - Gold 1 star award • Beechwood Fine Foods Old Doverhouse Chutney - Gold 1 star award The judge’s comments identified Sarah’s Plum Jam as “beautifully made with great texture,” and an “excellent balance of acidity and sweetness“. The Berry Jam was regarded “a glorious deep berry colour and wonderful depth of berry flavour, well balanced with the hint of sloe gin,” whilst the Chutney was “well balanced with sweetness and vinegar.” Fine praise indeed! An extensive promotional campaign in support of Great Taste Award winning foods will commence in September; Taste Gold, the Guild of Fine Food’s annual guide to award winning foods will participate in more than 80 major food exhibitions and festivals

around the country, directing consumers to stores which signify a food or drink really has been independently proven to be the finest. “I’m absolutely delighted with the results!” continued Sarah. “Great Taste is completely independent and uncompromisingly rigorous. It’s trusted by retailers, buyers and consumers. This year I entered only a limited range of products to see the feedback. With this positive news I will certainly be entering more next year; either seasonal specials such as Raspberry and Redcurrant or one or more of our regular range, including my renowned Piccalilli!” For further information, visit www.beechwoodfinefoods.com or contact Toby and Sarah Murray on tel: 01442 828812.

Posh picnics A pretty rug, a basket of mouth-watering foods and wines, and voilà, you’re good to go for some stylish al fresco eating. he French may lay claim to the origins of the picnic, or at least the word: the first record of pique nique is found in the 1692 edition of Origines de la Langue Française de Ménage. But no one does picnics better than the British. Once only reserved for wealthy hunters and country people out on their estates, it was the Victorians who popularised the picnic and made it commonplace, with writers like Dickens, Trollop and Jane Austen all adopting the convention in their books.

T

Ideally taking place in a beautiful landscape such as a park, beside a lake, with an interesting view or a public event such as before an open air theatre performance, there are many opportunities for you to enjoy a lazy afternoon in the outdoor sun and enjoy a delicious feast at your ideal picnic spot. 82

AUGUST2013

Will you be having a family picnic or a romantic al fresco day out for two? For a slice of romance, pick the most secluded spot you can find. A real romantic hideaway. Do your research, and find somewhere with stunning views, just in case you tire of gazing into each other’s eyes! Go the whole hog and dress up in full evening wear (minus the high heels), nominate a butler and raise a toast to the great outdoors. Plan the menu with care and love. Strawberries are important, as they are romantic foods for a picnic. Have dainty sandwiches, delicate fruits, small cuts of meats and vegetables, some pickles and sauces, and some fine gourmet treats like caviar or truffles. Use real champagne (sparkling wine) glasses. This will mean careful

carrying but glass is far more romantic than perspex. And be sure to bring the champagne or sparkling wine to fill those glasses. And don’t forget the bottle opener! Bring along music. Music is crucial to create a romantic atmosphere, if your venue allows it and doesn’t disturb others that prefer a quiet picnic.

number of high-profile stores in London, with a choice of luxury ready-to-go fine foods. Hampers ranging from £25 through to several hundred pounds are a big business for retailers, celebrity chefs and restaurants, who market them for weekends in the park, at outdoor movies, the races, or any number of summer outdoor events.

And for a full-scale Kids Picnic, try the forest for fairy parties and treasure hunts, the park for a mini sports day or the seaside for a picnic and a paddle.. Remember, wear them out and empty plates are guaranteed. No real glasses here! Perspex is certainly the order of the day when planning a children’s picnic. Easy but nutritional foods are a must, with a selection of different nibbles to keep the children interested in the food that you are presenting. Kids love to dip stuff, so this picnic is really easy. Simply buy a selection of dips and things to dip such as fruits and vegetables , bread, pretzels, cookies, and crackers. Don’t forget the wet wipes depending on the ages of your younger guests! Party and outdoor games are essential to keep them amused!

That’s perhaps not as much fun as picking and choosing your own temptations from your local deli or farmers market: fill your hamper full of artisan breads, hand-made cheeses, hams, patés and salads, so you can rip, tear and share the food and hold your head high at the Proms in the Park.

You do need to decide whether you would like to create your own charming mix of delicious foods in a pretty basket, or save yourself some time and go with a traditional Fortnum & Mason type hamper. Your personalised hamper can be sourced, packed and delivered to you by a

As for wines, they should be light, pink and preferably sparkling, and champagne for pure luxury! Or go with British tradition and have a tasty cool Pimms….just don’t forget the cool bag and the fruits! If you do have children in tow, a cool fresh lemonade or fruit juices are ideal. You and your guests will need to have something comfy to sit on, and this is dependent on the scale of your picnic – although you can’t beat the traditional picnic blanket, and a couple of fold-up stylish chairs. A parasol may be handy if you like a bit of shade. Bon appetite! AU GU ST2013 8 3

THE CAR’S THE STAR PHOTO OF FAMOUS ROLLS-ROYCE RESTORED IN BEACONSFIELD TO STAR IN LONDON EXHIBITION OF NIGERIA MONARCHS

George Osodi's image of the Emir of Kano in ‘ALW 11’

A

highly evocative image of a unique Rolls-Royce restored for the Emir of Kano by Chris Lee’s Ltd, Beaconsfield, Bucks, is to star in an exhibition of photos by the celebrated photographer George Osodi. Entitled Nigeria Monarchs, it is being held at the Bermondsey Project, London, October 11-November 3. ROYAL PATRONAGE

‘ALW 11’ started life in 1952 as a long wheelbase Silver Wraith. Its flamboyant lines were inspired by American oil tycoon and renowned Rolls-Royce aficionado Nubar Gulbenkian and committed to metal by the British coachbuilder Hooper. Ownership of the car then passed to the Emir of Kano, Abdullahi Bayero, and its second claim to fame was its role as transport for Her Majesty the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh during their 1956 visit to Nigeria, when they rode open-topped through the city of Kano to the cheering of the admiring crowds. RESTORATION BY CHRIS LEE’S LTD, BEACONSFIELD, BUCKS

By 2009 this most striking of Rolls-Royces had been handed down to the current Emir of Kano, Alhaji Dr. Ado Abdullahi Bayero and, though still much loved by the family, was in dire need of restoration. This exacting task was entrusted to long-standing independent Rolls-Royce specialist Chris Lee’s of Beaconsfield, Bucks. Recalls Chris: “The instruction was to do anything that was 88

AUGUST2013

required, irrespective of cost, and we ultimately rebuilt pretty well everything, starting with a new ash frame for the alloy body. Along the way we created replacement Perspex covers for the unique front lights, and persuaded the speedometer in the rear compartment back into life, where we also fitted a genuine Rolls-Royce badge bar to serve as a handrail for the emir when he needed to stand and acknowledge his people. The much-treasured bonnet mascot is one of the rare Rolls-Royce ‘kneeling lady’ type. “Seeing George’s splendid photo of the emir driving ‘ALW 11’ brought back many memories, as did the garages in the background, in which we first saw this famous car together with a Rolls-Royce Silver Could III that we also restored for the emir; the relationship with whom obviously means a great deal to us.” OTHER REGAL AND CELEBRITY CUSTOMERS

Eighty per cent of Chris Lee’s Ltd’s business is focused on Rolls-Royce and Bentley models of all ages, but the company also operates a first class bodyshop specialising in the repair of

Lotus, Jaguar and other up-market brands. Says top quality fabricator Martin Hawes: “All our customers require the highest quality and the personal touch, and I think it is these virtues in particular that help us win and retain business from our competitors. Among Chris’s prized keepsakes is a personal letter from Princess Margaret, thanking us for looking after her cars for no less than 12 years. More recently we carried out a project for the King of Malaysia, while the list of celebrities we have served over the years reads like the Who’s Who of the entertainment industry.” ATTENTION TO DETAIL

Whether it’s seeking mechanical perfection or an above-average paint finish, the staff at Chris Lee’s Ltd is used to going the extra mile. Says painter of perfection Dave Redrup: “Our bodyshop projects benefit from a couple more processes than most of our competitors provide. Such attention to detail features in all our work and is certainly appreciated by the customers.” Further details of George Osodi’s work and the upcoming exhibition can be found at www.zphotographic.com. Information on Chris Lee’s Ltd is viewable at www.chrislees.co.uk.
