t

his year’s unmissable Henley Festival turned out to be a showstopper despite the wet weather. The five night, star studded, strictly black tie event on the banks of the River Thames celebrated 30 years at the heart of the English summer season with an exceptional line up. Sting opened the festival on Wednesday 4th July with a tremendous sold-out performance and cheeky born Essex X factor finalist Olly Murs ended the festival on a high with the catchy number one hit, Heart skips a beat, on Sunday 8th July. The glamorous opera sensation Katherine Jenkins hosted a jubilee concert with special guests American singer /songwriter Nathan Pacheco and Military Wives Choir on Thursday 5th July whilst acclaimed tenor Alfie Boe and funny man Tim Minchin headlined on Friday 6th July along with one of 2011’s biggest selling classical artists Laura Wright. On Saturday 7th July, Sixties icon and songstress Lulu was joined by street dance group Peridot and 00’s No.1 boy band heartthrobs Blue. As well as the headline acts, black tie revellers enjoyed candlelit dining at award winning chefs Albert and Michel Roux Jr’s riverside restaurant, or had more of a relaxed bite to eat at one of the Festival’s six other brassieres’ 12

and pavilions. The classy and luxurious black tie festival found women wearing elegant ball gown dresses teamed with stylish wellies and brollies whereas men were seen in suits sipping on the finest champagne and admiring the spectacular event. The headline festivities ended each night with a dazzling and spectacular firework display featuring Lumina the Laser Violinist before partygoers danced into the night at the Festival’s resident nightclub. Along the riverbank the Festival showcased world class acts consisting of jazz, opera, pop, theatre, comedy and cabaret to the public as well as pop up art boutiques and sculpture lawns that enticed major galleries and artists to the festival. The Festival’s Visual Arts Programme included FEAST displayed an exceptional range of selling exhibitions- including the Festival’s famous sculpture gardens- that showcased major international established artists and emerging talent. Festival organizer Stewart Collins complimented and praised on this years Festival success

summing up the highlights; “Overall I personally come out the other side of this year’s festival feeling massively content in many many ways, in general the 2012 festival was one that consistently delivered on both quality and the all-important surprise factor and I have rarely received so much positive comment both on the night and in the in-box. Clearly Sting’s concert was an utterly memorable curtain raiser – not forgetting the unplanned ‘Suggs’ moment – but throughout the week there were highlight after highlight. My personal joys? The firework and laser spectacular ‘Lumina’; the ‘power it yourself ’ installation

‘Power Dressing’; our roving and singing nun, Musical Ruth; the improvised musical gang, Showstoppers; the Purple Spider Dance Group from Australia; the live body art on our opening night by artist Emma Hack… I could go on. The weather? Well what a summer we’re having, but in a weird way we were actually lucky. We really only suffer from the rain if it pours during a Floating Stage concert, and happily it didn’t on any evening. Obviously the grounds ended up very wet, but even then the ground staff did a fantastic job in minimising the discomfort or our audiences however sad it is to put tracking all over that beautiful site. And I suppose the proof of the pudding is in the eating and we did break box office records. In a year – and summer – like this, that has to be a pretty remarkable statistic.”

A TOUCH OF FROST IN SEPTEMBER

O

n September 15th Beaconsfield is commemorating the centenary of the arrival of America's most famous poet, Robert Frost. In September 1912 he came to Beaconsfield with his wife and four young children, and rented a cottage at number 26 Reynolds Road. The Bungalow, as it was called, no longer exists but a plaque on the brick wall now marks the spot where it stood. Frost was living here when he made his literary breakthrough with the publication, in London, of his first two volumes of poetry. This was before he was recognized as a poet in America. To commemorate the centenary there will be two performances at the Fitzwilliams Centre by Linda Hart and Gabriel Woolf of 'The English Years of Robert Frost'. Linda narrates the outlines of Frost's time over here, while Gabriel reads the poems and letters written by Frost that help to bring the story vividly

to life. Linda is an American who has lived in England for many years, and written and lectured on Robert Frost both here and in the States. Gabriel is a well-known and admired actor, literary performer and frequent reader on Radio 4. Together they will describe how Frost found his cottage in Beaconsfield, how he found a publisher in London, and how he befriended many writers such as W.B. Yeats, Edward Thomas and Rupert Brooke. This centenary event is being generously sponsored by The Frost Partnership. Indeed a special link exists as it was Alfred Cardain Frost, founder of the original business A. C. Frost Estate Agents, who rented the Bungalow to the Frost family. They were not related but became friends as

Local residents Jean Jackson, left and Kari Dorme, friends and fellow enthusiasts about Frost’s poetry, were instrumental in raising awareness of the poet in 2001 and putting the plaque in place. 14

they both had children the same age. Frost loved walking in the Chilterns. While living in Beaconsfield he wrote some of his most famous poems, including Mending Wall, Home Burial and After Apple Picking. One of Frost’s poems, The Road Not Taken, is regularly voted onto America's list of top ten poems. The family moved to Gloucestershire in 1914, and subsequently back to the US after the outbreak of the First World War. But Frost visited Beaconsfield when he came to England in 1957 to receive an

honorary degree from Oxford University. By the time of his death in 1963 he was read and admired around the world. Kari Dorme, retired Branch and Area Librarian for Beaconsfield, is an active Beaconsfield Society committee member and organiser of the event. Tickets for the two performances at The Fitzwilliams Centre, Beaconsfield HP9 2JW, will be on sale at The Frost Partnership Beaconsfield HP9 1NN and Beaconsfield Library HP9 2NJ For further information visit The Beaconsfield Society website: www.beaconsfieldsociety.org.uk and follow them on facebook.com/BeaconsfieldSociety.

SATURDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER

SAturdAy Super h

he hog’s being fattened, the beer’s being brewed, the White Helmets are revving up, and it’s only 7 weeks to go before the biggest event of the summer hits town! Yes, it’s the Chalfont St Giles Show and advance tickets are now on sale on-line for what we reckon will be the hottest (in more ways than one – we hope!) place to be in South Bucks! It’s all going to happen on Saturday, September 8 when the Superheroes Show comes to Stone and Silsden Meadows in Chalfont St Giles and it’s a steal at only £5 per adult (£3 in advance), Juniors (5-17) and Senior Citizens £2 (in advance and on Show Day) and under 5’s free, with FREE PARKING in Mill Lane thrown in. From humble beginnings as a flower show way back in 1872, the Chalfont St Giles Show regularly

16

J U LY /A U G U S T 2 0 1 2

attracts over 6,000 visitors. Not only playing a key role in maintaining village traditions, it’s a major event on the social calendar, bringing together young and old to share a fun day out for the whole family. There is something for everyone and people return year after year. Topping the bill this year are The Royal Signals White Helmets, the world-famous motorcycle display team comprising 30 volunteer soldiers, every one of them qualified Tradesmen in the Corps and who tour Britain from April to September every year demonstrating all the personal qualities demanded of the modern

Royal Signals soldier. Regarded as the best motorcycle display team in the business, the White Helmets have been performing their combination of high speed action and feats of skill and bravery throughout the country and abroad for more than eighty years. So come on and see them go through their death-defying formations! Get down to the arena, grab a seat and be left breathless as men and machines pass within millimetres of each other at closing speeds of up to 80mph! Be amazed at the feats of skill and balance as the riders control their machines from the top of a ladder or in reverse – and sometimes both! Appearing alongside the White

Helmets will be the nationally-acclaimed Sheep Show, a light-hearted look at the sheep and shearful world of wool. Whatever happens, don’t miss the sheep dancing (honest!) not to mention the racing, as the nine stars of the show go through their paces directed by New Zealand high country shepherd-turned-showman Stuart Barnes. If you want to put your name down for an adrenaline rush of epic proportions keep your eyes peeled on the Show website for details of how to experience the OMG thrills of Europe’s first Mobile Zip Line – and it’s ABSOLUTELY FREE! And also keep your eyes peeled for an exciting new talent in the form of alternative magician Dee Riley, hailed by one local newspaper as ‘A Future Star To Be’, and who will be enthralling everyone with his Table Magic. r heroeS attractions are Low Wire artiste Bernie Bennett, legendary Balloon Sculptor Billy Bubbles and Peter Leadbeater, the brilliant Chainsaw Carver, as well as show favourites The Falconry Centre and their beautiful birds of prey and as always, Premier Rides, back by popular demand with their good old– and all the latest – fairground rides. Old Show friends and new will be happy to know that the traditional elements of the village show remain as popular as ever: the competition marquees are a long-standing feature of the show and it’s a treat to see visitors of all ages enjoy viewing the exhibits and reading the judges comments. Competition in every class, from the most beautiful flower arrangements to the funniest-looking string bean can be very fierce and standards for entries remain consistently high— for example, at last year’s Show, 19

judges had the difficult task of judging 339 junior entries and a staggering 931 entries in the adult classes. In the run-up to the show over the next few weeks rivalry will reach fever pitch, not least in the men-only baking competition when the spatula-wielding wannabe winners will be practising the art of baking that perfect cake, while the Back Lane Allotment Association’s members will continue battling the elements and keeping a keen eye on their prize fruit and veg! This year’s theme of Superheroes promises some great entries – watch out for the Superheroes outfits for Barbie or Ken in the junior classes and the Superheroes cape made out of recycled

materials in the adult classes. If you want to get involved and join in the fun, there’s still time — on-line registration is already open and won’t close until midnight on Saturday 1st September. Entry to the competition classes is free, and this year there are 240 of them – 80 junior and 160 adult, and you don’t have to live in Chalfont St Giles to be eligible as entry is open to anyone within a 20-mile radius of the village. There is something for everyone so why not give it a go? Once the judges have finished their work and the marquees are open to the public in the afternoon, the sight of a red first prize sticker on your exhibit (and a cash prize!) will make it all seem well worth while. Have a show-stopping canine companion who would like to be involved? No problem, they can wag their tails and show off to their heart’s content at the Companion Dog Show, where owners can enter pets of all shapes, sizes and breeds. So bring Bonzo along! With 4 Pedigree Classes plus Best In Show and 10 Novelty Classes (plus Best In Novelty Classes) ranging from Cross-Breed in Best Condition to Best Trick, you’re always in with a chance of winning one of those coveted rosettes or even a cup! Information on rules and entry fees can be found on the show website. No show would be complete, of course, without a procession and we’re hoping for a great turnout of Superheroes and Superheroines

this year! Perhaps you have a vehicle you can decorate with a Superhero theme, or how about digging out your wheelbarrow and getting the kids to decorate it and then hitching a ride down through the village to the showground? A TRANS-ATLANTIC LOVE FOR

THE RIVER & ROWING MUSEUM

T

he River & Rowing Museum is home to one of the finest collections of sporting memorabilia in the world. With priceless permanent exhibits ranging from Anglo-Saxon longboats to contemporary cutting edge racing technology along with some of Henley’s most treasured momentos it is not surprising that last year the Museum attracted over 114,000 visitors – a new record. The Museum’s collection has steadily expanded over the years and is constantly growing and evolving. As with many smaller museums this simply wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of private individuals who donate key pieces. This summer the Museum will be honouring one of its key patrons, rowing memorabilia enthusiast Thomas E. Weil with The Art of the Prize – Rowing prizes from the Thomas E Weil Collection - a year-long exhibition showcasing some of the important items he’s brought to the museum. Based in America, Weil has a long loving relationship with this “wonderful British Sport”. A 20

J U LY /A U G U S T 2 0 1 2

rower himself he has amassed an incredible collection of some 15,000 objects, several thousands of which he has donated to the Museum over the past ten years. Those on show from this summer include a huge variety of objects, together representing countless stories of struggle, triumph and glory, ranging from silver arm badges, wherrys and oars, to the array of chalices, goblets and tankards. The highlight of the group is an unmatched historic object of sporting history - what is thought to be the only remaining programme from the first ever Henley Regatta in 1839, which was previously in the collection of local Henley hero - Hart Perry, himself the first American to be elected a Steward of Henley Royal Regatta. This extremely rare programme describes the order of the day, the colours of the participating crews and outlines the rules. Capturing the of essence the early 1800s the document is an authentic product of the era – two-sided, printed by the local post office and advertising lithographic drawings of the

winning regatta cups at two shillings a pair. Weil has considered this to be “the holy grail” of Rowing memorabilia for many years and bought the progamme from Perry’s estate earlier this year, donating the programme to the Museum and the money paid for the item, an undisclosed sum, to the National Rowing Foundation – where Hart Perry was once Executive Director. This noble gesture illustrated his compassion for both the sport and the museum. Weil described his joy by stating that: “It was a delight to be able to acquire a copy of the first Henley Regatta program, especially with such a distinguished provenance. It was an even greater honor to bring it back to Henley, and place it in the River & Rowing Museum where this sheet celebrates the somewhat modest birth of what has become one of the most venerable events in the sport. Temple Island may mark the start of the famed Henley course, but the true temple, or shrine, to rowing's extraordinary legacy is to be found just above the course finish, in

Mill Meadows, at the River & Rowing Museum.” But the Thomas E Weil Collection is not the only show dedicated to the art of rowing this summer. Enthusiasts (and patriots) will be amazed by some of the revelations uncovered during the making of The Perfect Rower – 100 Years of Racing for Glory a special exhibition that celebrates Olympic Rowing successes through fascinating artefacts and inspiring human stories. For art lovers there’s also John Piper: the Gyselynk Collection which presents a previously unseen collection of one of Britain’s most influential modernist painters. Entrance to the River & Rowing Museum is free for the whole year after purchasing a ticket once. A thank you from

THE GARDEN PLAYERS

A

fter the feverish build up to the week of the play, The Garden Players’ June 2012 production of Twelfth Night held again in Storrington garden in Beaconsfield, proved a smash hit with critics and audiences alike and the company was blessed with good weather and not a drop of rain during the performances. Started in 2008 the group’s productions have become a much anticipated annual social and fund raising event in the area. This new production of the play, directed by Archie Wilson, has raised £8,306 for the Child Bereavement Charity. There was a late donation from the Attorney General, the Rt Hon Dominic Grieve QC MP for Beaconsfield which was much appreciated. The Child Bereavement Charity’s patron Prince William had kindly sent his best wishes for the production. One of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies, Twelfth Night is a tale of mistaken identity and sweeping romance. Shipwrecked off the coast of Illyria and believing her twin brother Sebastian to be dead, the destitute Viola dresses as a boy for self protection and joins the court of the lovesick Duke Orsino. Sent to

court Lady Olivia on his behalf, she finds herself at the apex of a love triangle: ‘Whoe’er I woo, myself would be his wife.’ The hilarious antics of Sir Toby Belch & Sir Andrew Aguecheek and the humiliation of Olivia’s servant Malvolio are key additional elements of Shakespeare’s much loved comedy of mistaken identity and sweeping romance. This year’s performances played to full houses on each night. Appreciative comments from the audiences were fulsome, and it is always a pleasure to repeat them. “THE Garden Players reignited my love for William Shakespeare” “it was a real pleasure to see one of Shakespeare’s best plays performed by such a competent cast.” “All the cast were excellent” “Gerard Nolan as the slightly effeminate Sir Andre Aguecheek was extremely funny —- Sir Toby played by Rob Aldington was also line perfect and together they made a brilliant duo, add to this the talented Jan Edwards as Maria and you have the perfect mix” “Graham Weeks was superb as the pompous Malvolio”

“an excellent production in every sense - the play made me want to rush home and read more of Shakespeare’s plays as the cast made his work so accessible” “Starting in 2008 the Garden Players’ productions have become a much anticipated annual event in the area, so it was with great excitement that I looked forward to their latest performance” “While the setting was stunning, and a star in itself, the cast really shone.” “Comedic jewels were Gerard Nolan’s Sir Andrew Aguecheek, the overly effeminate knight, and Graham Weeks as the pompous Malvolio.” “Brimming with jokes, songs and twists, this tale of mistaken identity was deftly delivered by the amateur group. Bring on next year.” Above is a photo following the handover of our donations from Twelfth Night to the Child Bereavement Charity. In the photo on the left are Gerard & Bernadette Nolan representing The Garden Players and on the right, Stephanie Sears and Jill Adams representing The Child Bereavement Charity. Also attached are some photos from

the play. Our stated objectives are to : stage high quality productions raise the awareness of the charity we are supporting maximise our donation to that charity. These have been achieved and the total raised since 2009 exceeds £36,000. We are grateful to the readers of Beaconsfield Life who supported the production and we look forward to seeing you all again in the near future. Further photos of Twelfth Night together with news on future productions will be posted on our website at http://www.thegardenplayersweb. co.uk/ over the next few weeks. Thank you once again for your support. The Child Bereavement Charity is the UK’s leading charity that supports families and educates professionals both when a child dies and when a child is bereaved. THE GROVE

Ever since it opened in 2003, The Grove in Hertfordshire has been known as ‘London’s Country Estate’. This is an apt name for this contemporary five star resort that is truly a destination in itself. There is Sequoia, the to-die-for spa, a championship golf course, tennis courts, three swimming pools, an OFSTED registered kids’ club and three very different restaurants.

uests can escape into romantic formal gardens, wander through meadowlands, stroll along lakes and the Grand Union Canal or bask on the urban beach set within a 3.5 acre Walled Garden. They might even discover the beehives and the much-loved topiary giraffe who watches the world go by, peering engagingly over the wall of the original Walled Garden. All this is just 10 minutes from Watford, 20 minutes by train from central London and moments from the M25. The Grove is set on a 300 acre estate, the former seat of the Earls of Clarendon. There has been a house on this site since 1400, although the present Grove is an 18th century mansion, which is now the heart of the hotel. The spirit of hospitality has been alive and well here for centuries – in its time, The Grove was one of the most fashionable homes in the country. With the introduction of the railways in the 19th century, its closeness to London made it a 36

popular destination for the newly fashionable ‘week-end’ house parties - much as it is today. Visitors included Vita Sackville-West, HM King Edward VII, Prime Minister Lord Palmerston and the artist George Stubbs – who frequently walked from his home in Edgeware to sketch and paint on the Estate. Today, The Grove’s rich heritage is clear to see in its award-winning ‘groovy grand’ interiors by acclaimed interior designer, Martin Hulbert. Original art and antiques complement the rich silks and velvets of the suites in the original mansion. Step outside and the celebration of art continues with The Grove’s summer sculpture exhibition, Expressions of Movement, which has transformed the formal gardens into an outdoor gallery, continuing until 30 September 2012. The curator, Virginia Grub invited 24 sculptors and artists to create pieces which are loosely inspired by 2012’s two great

events: The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics. The result is an engaging and surprising collection of 57 pieces including Lucy Unwin's steel depiction of Ussain Bolt in his famous lightning bolt stance; a brightly coloured elephant covered with motifs of dancing gymnasts by Jill Berelowitz and a set of regal thrones by Frances Segelman who has previously made busts of Her Majesty The Queen and H.R.H The Duke of Edinburgh. Just a short drive from The Grove’s is Warner Bros. Studios where all the Harry Potter films were shot. As the nearest 5* hotel to the studios, The Grove became a home-from-home for many of the stars of during the filming of the blockbuster series , with visits from Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, Tom Felton and the Phelps twins. So where better to stay if you are visiting the sensational new Warner Bros. Studio Tour? The Grove has cast its own spell to create a magical Harry Potter

getaway, A Magical Tour for Muggles, which starts from £350 per room per night and includes overnight accommodation with breakfast, and two tickets to Warner Bros. Studio Tour. The Grove’s much-lauded spa, Sequoia, has been at the forefront of the UK spa scene since the moment it opened. This is a serious retreat, where guests can sink into a superb ESPA treatment, swim in the decadent black mosaic tiled pool, work out in the Technogym or invest in some well-deserved me-time in one of the heat experiences. New at Sequoia are the delicious Signature Rose Ritual treatment and The English Rose Spa Day. Inspired by the delicate blooms in The Grove’s enchanting Walled Garden and Rose Gardens, the new treatments have been designed to restore the body and provide complete rejuvenation of the mind. The Rose Ritual Signature Treatment is 1 hour and 50 minutes of heaven, priced from £165 and The English Rose Spa Day is 4

For guests wanting to hone their golf swing, The Grove’s championship golf course is unique in that it has no members, being ‘Pay & Play’ and is open to players of varied levels of skill. The extensive facilities include a large landscaped practice range playing off natural turf, a large putting green as well as a chipping and bunker area. A team of PGA professionals is available with unparalleled experience in coaching all standards of player. And where better to play or even learn than on the course where Tiger Woods won a World Golf Championship title in 2006. After working up an appetite on the putting green, it’s time to discover the delights of one of The Grove’s three excellent restaurants. Leading the way is Colette’s, the elegant à la carte restaurant, with rising star Chef Russell Bateman at the helm. A protégé of Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing, Russell has already won 3 AA Rosettes in the 2011 AA

For a lively and buzzing atmosphere, book a table at The Glasshouse with its large terraces overlooking the formal gardens. For younger guests, there is Anouska’s, The Grove’s kids’ club which is rated outstanding by OFSTED. Older kids will enjoy hanging out in the hotel’s Games Room and Teen Zone, complete with a next generation X-Box, cinema, Playstation and Wii, and can enjoy a game of tennis, croquet or round of golf. Over 16’s can also enjoy a relaxing treatment in the Sequoia Spa and have full use of the spa facilities. The Grove’s guests are welcomed to a unique environment, which brings together the very best of 21st century living, with everything that makes a country estate so attractive: the peace of the countryside, a personal welcome, a sense of peace. A destination in itself, there is no need to leave The Grove – here you will find the perfect balance between city and country; classic and contemporary; formality and fun – a country estate with a modern twist, that has it all. olympic guide

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games are here! Starting 27th July, and running until 12th August 2012 he Olympic Games is the biggest sporting event on the planet. With 26 sports, 10,500 athletes and millions of spectators, it’s going to be a busy summer. Giant Olympic Rings have been unveiled at Heathrow, the Host Airport of the Games, to help provide a spectacular visual welcome to athletes and visitors during London 2012.

T

Along with plenty of excitement and an incredible atmosphere, the Olympic Games will bring thousands of visitors to London and the UK. This means the transport system will be extremely busy – so if you’re going to a London 2012 sports event or ceremony, it’s important to plan and book your journey well in advance. There is no spectator parking at London 2012 venues, except for a limited number of Blue badge spaces that must be booked in advance – so we recommend you go by public transport, or in many cases, walking to a London 2012 venue is much quicker and easier than you may think. As well as being a healthy, sustainable way to travel, it gives you the chance to see many sights on the way and soak up the atmosphere of being in a Host City. J U LY 2 0 1 2 3 9

SUMMER AT THE BANK OF ENGLAND MUSEUM A warm welcome awaits visitors at the Bank of England Museum. Interactive displays, exhibits and special events reveal the Bank’s history from its foundation in 1694 to its modern roles to keep inflation low, issuing banknotes and working to keep the financial system stable. The Museum houses the world’s finest collection of Bank of England banknotes alongside items from the Bank’s collections of silver, paintings, photographs, coins, books and documents. Until 10 November, the special exhibition Gold and the Bank of England will examine the part gold has played during the Bank’s long history and the Bank’s role in relation to gold today. Under its founding 1694 charter the Bank of England was given the statutory right to trade in gold and silver and has participated in the London bullion market since then. Today the Bank is the second largest gold repository in the world and 56

AS THE SCHOOL YEAR COMES TO AN END, WE HOPE THE RELENTLESS RAIN THAT HAS BEEN BESTOWED UPON US CEASES, AND THE CHILDREN ONCE AGAIN CAN PLAY OUTSIDE. ALSO AS I AM STAYING IN THE UK THIS YEAR FOR MY ANNUAL FAMILY HOLIDAY – I AM PRAYING THAT I DO NOT HAVE TO WEAR MY WATERPROOFS ALL WEEK LONG! HOWEVER, WE CAN LOOK FORWARD TO LONDON HOSTING THE OLYMPICS AND I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO VISITING THE OLYMPIC VILLAGE WITH MY FAMILY. SO ON TO THIS MONTH’S Q&A

Q&A

WITH THE AWARD WINNING DENTIST

DR SHAMEEK POPAT

IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN DO ABOUT MY PARTNERS SNORING? Traditionally, Orthodontists have successfully used “functional appliances”. However, there are Mandibular Advancement Appliance, (MAA), which are a simple, non-invasive complementary treatment for snoring. They can also help with the management of tooth grinding and as a treatment for jaw pain, also known as TMJ or TMJD. SO, WHAT CAUSES SNORING EXACTLY?

During sleep, the lower jaw and tongue can fall back, reducing the size of the airway in the throat. The throat muscles also relax during sleep, reducing efficiency at maintaining an open airway. This narrowed airway means the lungs need to draw air at a higher velocity in order to get the required amount of oxygen into the lungs. The increased airflow causes soft tissues in

the throat and behind the tongue to vibrate – snoring! SO, HOW DOES THE MAA WORK?

These are custom made dental appliances that are worn during sleep. The Appliance is inserted in the mouth just before sleeping. The MAA appliances work by posturing the lower jaw forward. As the jaw comes forward so the tongue follows the inner surface of the lower teeth drawing the tongue forward. The muscles and soft tissues below the jaw are also stretched. This jaw and tongue advancement places the patient in the “recovery position” and gives a widened airway at the back of the throat. Since the muscles are stretched and the jaw is forward, it is impossible to snore. The appliances only work when they are worn! Try making yourself snore with your lips together and the jaw

held forward. As a patient, you will need a well cared for mouth with teeth in both jaws. It is advisable to have a check up with your dentist before treatment is commenced and to continue regular maintenance once the appliances are fitted. Scrupulous attention to mouth care is essential to maintain the teeth as these support the appliances. Changes in tooth anatomy following dental treatment may cause the appliance not to fit and require a remake of the MAA appliance. You must always take the MAA to any dental visit. WHAT WILL THE APPLIANCE FEEL LIKE?

The appliances are like mouth jewellery. The jaw can be opened and moved from side to side but cannot drop forward. The lips can usually

be closed. The appliance may feel tight against the teeth at the start. It takes 2-3 nights of consistent wear to get used to the appliance. In the morning the teeth may feel a little different to begin with and the jaw joints may also feel stretched. Occasionally the bite will feel altered but usually settles within minutes of the appliance removal. HOW QUICKLY DO THEY WORK?

Usually a change will be noticed as soon as the appliance is worn. In some patients a gradual jaw advancement or slight altering of the jaw balance is required. If you have any further question, please speak to your dentist or you can contact myself. Thanks, Dr S Popat

It’s time for a brow re-model. “Semi-permanent make-up has taken a complete turn, gone are the days of the half moon shape slapped above the eye, we have so many different types of fantastic and natural looking ways to enhance your eyebrow shape from fine hair line strokes to simply filling in patchy eyebrows with a shadow effect. I can create a totally realistic and natural arched brow for both men and women!” As you get older the shape of your face changes and it is very important to move with the times, it’s amazing how many women still over pluck their eyebrows into the shape they had in the nineties or even eighties. The area becomes over traumatised therefore making it impossible to achieve that full lush look you had in your 20’s. As the brows are such

Aesthetic medicine is a rapidly growing area, with non-surgical treatments such as muscle relaxant injections, Dermal fillers,, light ther t apy, mesotherapy and face peels to name a ffeew, available to help replace what has been taken awaay through ageing and the environment. These procedures are no longer sought by just women,, with increasing numbers of men also looking for a fr f resher, younger look. Recent media coverage via the documentar y Botox Britain (BBC 3, Thursday 7th April) highlighted the growing trend for injectab ble treatments and dermal fillers, including the worr ying ease of obtaining DIY kits over the inter net, and the so-c al led teen-toxin phenomenon. The documentar y quite rightly reinfforced the need for those considering nonsurgical cosmetic treatments to seek a reputable provider. This article looks at what regulations are in place for non-surgical cosmetic procedures and what questions you should be askkiing the healthcare proffessional beffor ore undertaking such procedures. In the UK,, only Doctors, Dentists and Nurses registered with the Nursing and midwif er y council can administer injectable muscle relaxants and dermal fillers, although there are many reports of individuals without the correct medical training, such as beauticians, running such ser vices. If you find that you are never feeling satisfied after a meal or just an hour or so later you are reaching for a snack to pick you up? Well, we're here to help with some feel-full strategies. Granted there are foods that can boost your feelings of fullness but how, when and where you eat your meals can also have a bearing on your full factor too. Here are 10 ways to keep your dining habits in check to maximise your feelings of satiety and satisfaction. SOMETIMES GO IT ALONE

People can eat more when they dine in company or with the television on because they become distracted as to what exactly is going into their mouth. Make sure mealtimes are all about the food, focus on it entirely and you'll feel full sooner. Avoid fast-paced music too, this can increase the speed you eat, resulting in a clean plate before your body is able to recognise it is full.

64

so allow time for the feeling of fullness from the fat to kick in. GET ENOUGH SLEEP

hormones needed to send the satiety signals to the brain are released by your chomping. GO FOR BULKY AND MOIST

The rationale behind the bulky and moist rule is pretty straightforward, simply the more air and water in food the quicker it will fill you up, calorie for calorie. So, in terms of food swaps have a vegetable soup rather than a pasty, plain air-popped popcorn instead of crisps and grapes in place of raisins.

SMELL AND CHEW

WAIT AFTER FAT

When you eat make sure you give your meal a good sni as concentrating on the smell of your food as well as the taste also switches on satiety signals. Secondly, chew, chew, chew, and chew some more, some of the

If you do have a meal with a high-fat content then make sure you allow time for that feeling of fullness to come. It can take longer for sense of satiety to come from a fatty meal compared to meal high in protein for example,

J U LY /A U G U S T 2 0 1 2

When your body is deprived of sleep it produces more ghrelin and less leptin. These are the hormones that are involved in the regulation of appetite; ghrelin is produced largely in the stomach and accelerates your appetite, while leptin decreases appetite as it's the hormone that signals satiety. GET HYDRATED

CHOOSE FIDDLY FOODS

If you eat foods that take a little time and eort to eat, this will allow time for your body to recognise the fullness feeling. Good examples of fiddly foods are corn on the cob, a crunchy salad or fish with bones, these types of foods force you to eat more slowly and help you to feel full quicker. EAT AN APPLE BEFORE EACH MEAL

The daily recommended amount of water to drink is around the eight glasses mark, but many of us don't get anywhere near that amount and as a result when we feel hungry, it is often because we're actually thirsty. Drink a glass or two of water before a meal, and when you do eat, the food will feel more filling.

Apples help to promote a feeling of fullness and research has shown that eating an apple 20 minutes prior to eating a meal reduced the amount of food that was consumed at that meal. So, including an apple for your daily snack will not only contribute to one of your daily recommended fruit or veggie portions but the fibre will fill up your stomach too.

GET A SMALLER PLATE

BE NATURAL

People tend to fill their plate however big it is, and most of us eat until it is empty. And the aim of getting a 'clean plate' makes us more likely to override the satiety signals that stop us eating. So, swap your normal plate for a slightly smaller one, and you'll find your 'full' switch will flip a little faster.

Try to eat food that is as natural as possible as most manufactured foods tend to be very energy-dense which means they contain more calories bite-for-bite. However raw fruit and vegetables take a lot of chewing and occupy a lot of room in your stomach so they fill you up much more per bite.

f there’s one thing that will stop you puckering up with your other half, it’s a nasty cold sore on your lip. They may be small and often barely noticeable to others - but to the sufferer they can seem huge, and very obvious. The reality is, however, that if sufferers were brave enough to go on their dates, their partners would probably sympathise, as the Herpes Viruses Association (HVA) estimate that by the age of 25, 60% of people will have become infected with the herpes simplex (HSV) type 1 virus that most commonly causes cold sores. HOW DO YOU CATCH THEM?

The virus is very much a kissing disease, passed on by mouth-to-mouth from someone who has a cold sore on their face. “It’s skin contact with friction, so you’re more likely to catch a cold sore off somebody if it’s a long kiss, rather than just a peck on the lips,” says Nigel Scott of the HVA. However, as the virus is fragile and dies very quickly when it’s off the skin, it’s only caught by direct skin contact. So there’s no need to worry about sharing cups or towels with sufferers. It can also be killed by water, or getting too hot or cold. Not all people infected with HSV will develop cold sores as a result, say experts. In fact, only around a quarter of carriers will ever experience symptoms. “You can catch it and never get symptoms,” says Scott. “Or there could be a trigger at any stage of your life and you get a cold sore.” WHAT ARE THE TRIGGERS?

Once you’ve caught HSV, it hides in nerve sheaths and can be reactivated by various situations, including tiredness, illness, stress, being run-down, menstruation, too much alcohol or the ultraviolet rays from sunbeds or sunlight. Some people can have recurrent outbreaks as often as once a month. Scott says: “If your mouth and lips get very sore if you do something like eat a very scratchy French loaf, if you get very run-down, or something upsets 66

KISS THOSE COLD SORES

GOODBYE AFTER 80% OF COLD SORE SUFFERERS ADMITTED THEY’VE CANCELLED DATES DUE TO OUTBREAKS, EXPERTS EXPLAIN WHY THE NASTY MOUTH SORES OCCUR AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM. BY LISA SALMON your immune system - any of these things can act as triggers. “The immune system would normally keep this virus suppressed, but if it’s really stretched with something else, sometimes it doesn’t quite manage.” HOW DOES IT FEEL?

There will be an itchy, tingly feeling on or near the lip when a cold sore is developing, and perhaps a feeling of pressure. This is the time to treat the area, as at this stage it’s possible to stop the cold sore developing, says Scott.

If left untreated, the itchy feeling develops into a small red patch, then a blister, which bursts and heals into the classic cold sore scab, normally lasting around a week. Sores tend to appear where you’ve been kissed, although they can occasionally recur anywhere on the face. In general, the virus prefers the moist skin that lines the lips, mouth and nose. TREATMENT

The HVA says the best way to avoid cold sores is to look after

yourself, and those who are prone to them should steer clear of any potential triggers. GP Dr Phil Hammond, a patron of the HVA, warns that exposure to bright sunlight, which can trigger a cold sore outbreak, is a particular risk for skiers at this time of year, and advises them to use a good sun block. “A few unlucky people seem to get frequent repeat outbreaks sometimes triggered by stress, poor diet, lack of sleep or exposure to bright sunlight,” he says. “A long-term course of antiviral tablets can deal with this.” Aciclovir, a medication used to treat a variety of viral infections including cold sores, shingles and chickenpox, is commonly prescribed to sufferers, and some aciclovir creams can be bought over the counter at pharmacies. Other cold sore treatments include using a herbal cream made with lemon balm, or a liquorice balm, which can help reduce the severity and duration of outbreaks. Medical nutritionist and former GP Dr Sarah Brewer says liquorice extracts stimulate immunity by increasing production of the antiviral substance ‘interferon’. “When applied to the lips, it suppresses the production of viral proteins needed to keep the herpes virus in its latent state, so they’re less likely to cause an eruption,” she says. “When applied to a sore, it promotes more rapid destruction of infected cells.” FIGHT THOSE COLD SORES

The Herpes Viruses Association has these suggestions for sufferers... • Start treatment as soon the characteristic tingling starts. • Apply well-wrapped ice for 90 minutes to cool the area. • Use over-the-counter creams. • Apply cold, used teabags to the sore every hour. • Use tea tree oil or geranium oil to help speed healing. • Keep the sore moist so it doesn’t crack with a dab of Vaseline. • See your doctor for antiviral tablets if you have recurrent outbreaks.

TINTIN’S ADVENTURES IN CHALFONT ST GILES

I

t is almost 80 years since the world of Tintin and his dog Snowy were first created by the Belgian cartoonist Georges Remi who wrote under the pen name of Hergé. Today Tintin and his adventures are nothing short of cultural phenomena, and have survived the test of time re-surfacing in popularity again and again. Last years’ release of the hit movie from Steven Spielberg saw a new surge in popularity. The first of a trilogy, this film was produced by Spielberg with help from Peter Jackson, most well known for his production of “Lord of the Rings”. The second in the series will be produced by Jackson with help from Spielberg and promises to generate just as much interest. At St Giles Furniture we have a personal interest since one of these well known producers has been a customer of ours in the past! Tintin first appeared in 1929 but Remi’s active imagination had been conjuring up stories of international intrigue long before this as he scribbled stories in his school books about the war. After leaving school Remi developed his original character into Tintin the reporter turned detective whose pursuit of villains, criminals and treasure took him all over the world aided in his adventures by his faithful dog Snowy along with assorted friends. The very first Tintin adventure (Tintin in the Land of the Soviets) was an instant hit with children and adults alike. Characters were often based on famous people such as Bianca Castafiore, who was inspired by the opera singer Maria Callas. Later additions to the cast included Captain Haddock and Professor Calculus. Hergé himself featured in several of the comic strips as a background character along with some of his assistants from time to time. Further stories were all based on real-world events and cultures that caught the imagination of

70

J U LY /A U G U S T 2 0 1 2

Belgians at the time and ranged from space exploration to oil wars. Hergés “clear line” style has proved to be one of the most influential styles of drawings used by comic artists today. His story telling skills have also influenced some of the top writers and film makers dominating the industry in recent years. The well researched plots included exciting adventures, fantasy, mystery, political issues and science fiction delivered with real slapstick humour and glimpses of satire and political commentary and opened the market for serialised comic strips. Hergés early adventures fighting communism as he reported from behind the Iron Curtain made for compelling reading in a post-war era. Having started as a children’s supplement to a popular Belgian newspaper, the success of the series meant that it was quickly serialised in the leading Belgian newspaper of the time and then spun out into its own magazine. The Adventures of Tintin have since been adapted for radio, television, theatre and film with translations published in more than 50 languages. At St Giles Furniture we have stocked Tintin memorabilia for many years with customers regularly visiting us to add to their collection of the comic strip characters who have become so well known. As an official Tintin stockist we have recently added to our collection with several framed Tintin prints for sale such as “Le Lotus Bleu” and “Tintin au Tibet” – well known titles from The Adventures of Tintin to avid followers! Do come and visit our newly refurbished showroom in Chalfont St Giles and discover what adventures Tintin has been up to in South Bucks! www.stgilesfurniture.com info@stgilesfurniture.com 01494 873031

MORSO FOR YOUR MONEY M

orstoves is an exciting new business in the beautiful town of Old Amersham. They sell the most established and well known stoves on the market from Danish producer Morso stoves. Formed earlier this year by Neil Sillett and two of his highest profile football clients, Rory Delap of Stoke City and Newcastle United’s Ryan Taylor, the sleek products are already being sourced by residents from all Home Counties and London. Neil and Rory have had an interest in the brand for some time and having seen what a wide range Morso offer, there was an instant belief that the brand could offer what most people are looking for in terms 72

of solutions to high energy bills and the need for future generations to obtain renewable fuels to provide their heating energy. Morso have been established since 1853 and that experience with top level development has seen the company refine its product to the highest standards. The fact that 99% of the cast iron used in producing a Morso stove is recycled scrap is further evidence of Morstoves emphasise on making a green friendly impact. The stoves don’t just act as a heat source, it is an attractive and functional piece of furniture that creates a lovely feeling of warmth and cosiness, whether it is radiated heat or more evenly distributed throughout your

home. Many of Morstoves products are approved by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs) allowing them to be used in built up areas do to their lack of emissions. On display in Old Amersham are models from the top selling Morso Squirrels range which are traditional in look, unlike the futuristic Morso S80-90, which are beautiful inset stoves with a similar feel to the image of a flat screen TV! The summer, or lack of it, has seen Morstoves hit the ground running, and if the past two years in the trade are anything to go by, it’s going to be a busy winter with UK sales figures increasing from 90,000 in 2006 to well over 170,000 in 2011.

Morstoves provide a structured survey, fully explained quotation and advice on making sure the stove is right for the size for the chosen room. Once the client chooses from the extensive range, the installation is booked at the customers convenience and a supply of kiln dried wood is provided to get them going. With another harsh winter on the way, don’t wait for the rush, visit the new showroom and discover what attractive offers are available now. FIGURING OUT THE BEST CONFIGURATION FOR REPLACEMENT

BI-FOLDING DOORS I

f you are thinking about replacement bi-folding and sliding doors for an existing “opening” to replace French doors, sliding patio doors or casement windows, or indeed looking at fitting folding and sliding doors into an extension - getting the configuration just right is vital to ensure their long-term practical operation. When it comes to “Bi-Fold” doors the clue is in the name, yet, despite this, many double glazing customers still get into hot water when having bi-folding doors fitted, as they did not take the time to think through the ramifications of certain configurations. The key thing with bi-folding doors is to remember that each “pair” of bi-folds, opens and closes in tandem, so cannot operate as individual sections, they are in-effect one. As these two folding door sections are inextricably linked, no pair of bi-folding doors can therefore accommodate a normal door handle, nor can one of these two sections operate as a travel door without the other opening or closing at the same time. Consequently, if you want to

76

J U LY /A U G U S T 2 0 1 2

have a single travel door as part of your bi-folding door configuration, you need to have an odd number of sections, namely 3, 5 or 7 panes etc. Only high quality bi-folding doors will last regular use, as they are highly technical pieces of kit (and yes, they are consequently expensive!), so it is vital when purchasing double glazed bi-folding doors, to invest wisely in robust enough products that will still be operational in 10 years’ time when the guarantee runs out and the homeowner is left to foot the bills for all the call-out charges, parts and labour to get the folding doors operational and secure again. To avoid such issues, don’t buy a cheap set of folding and sliding doors, or indeed bi-folding doors without a cast iron warranty from a firm you are 100% certain will be around to service the guarantee. It is worth asking yourself why some established UK independent double glazing manufacturers and installers who supply and fit aluminium and UPVC front doors, back doors, French doors and sliding patio doors in both aluminium and UPVC, refuse to

touch UPVC bi-folding doors. Could it be they are not fit for purpose? As a material UPVC flexes, so is not the ideal product to use for bi-folding doors that need to operate rigidly, as one, and not be in any danger of popping out of alignment. High quality double glazed aluminium bi-folding doors not only offer better security than plastic dual folding doors, but tend to have slimmer profiles, so are aesthetically more pleasing and deliver more glass and daylight. Yes UPVC folding doors are much cheaper to buy, but it is up to you if you want to take on the risks involved and are prepared to have less glass and light in the room in question. The optimum number of sections for a bi-folding door for each particular property is really determined by the size of the aperture and how often these folding and sliding double glazed doors will be used. If you are looking for all the sections to slide in one direction, then a 3, 5 or 7 section door will deliver a travel door with a normal door handle. The problem with 2, 4 or 6 section

bi-folds doors is they cannot have a normal door handle, so are unable to fold up together properly, and therefore are more limited in their operation. Make sure that the doors you have fitted, come with “D handles to assist with the opening and closing of the doors, as dragging them from one end can pull and stretch the gasket, leading to unnecessary time consuming service calls. All bi-folding doors systems, whether made of aluminium, steel, UPVC or wood have their limitations in terms of both overall height and overall width, and indeed maximum and minimum achievable pane section sizes. So before creating an opening for bi-folding doors, do make sure that the product you are considering having installed will actually be able to fit it! It is better to make the opening to the optimum size of the bi-folding door system you have chosen, rather than the other way round. One top tip to remember is that these systems are highly technical bits of kits, so make sure they are fitted by professional installers with experience fitting the actual system you are having fitted. Many reputable firms will not supply bi-folding doors on a supply only basis for this very reason. Finally, it is worth knowing that some bespoke aluminium bi-folding door systems allow for one single section at one end to swing open, allowing say a 3

section sliding and folding door to butt up to this, enabling the property to have a travel door, pair of French door and bi-folding doors all in one configuration of 3 linked sections, plus one independent swinging open section. Think carefully whether you want your bi-folding doors to a) open to the left or to the right, b) fold inwardly or outwardly and c) have a standard or low threshold. Take your time and ask an expert for a demonstration of whichever bi-folding double glazed product you are considering before committing to a purchase, as not getting it right first time could be a very costly mistake. TRANSFORM YOUR WINDOWS FOR SUMMER, BY SARAH QUILLIAM, HEAD OF PRODUCT DESIGN AT HILLARYS.

Curtains featured are Richmond Lime with eyelet heading. Prices start at £159 (127cm w x 137cm d) measured, made and fitted.

indows are the eyes to the world so it makes sense to dress them well,” says Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys. She believes that putting up a new blind, curtain or shutter can be a great start to adding or changing the style of a room. And with the promise of longer, lighter days ahead it’s important that your window dressings also make the most of the light while controlling its flow when shade is needed. “If you’re a fan of opening up your home during the warmer months and letting the light flood in then curtains are a great option, “says Sarah. And you can maintain a feeling of summer all year round by choosing fabrics in light, fresh colours. It’s a good idea to make sure the curtains reach all the way to the floor and are fully lined, this way when the cooler months arrive, you can pull them closed and keep the chill out – it may even save you a few pennies on the heating bill too. “Shutters are also steaming ahead in the style stakes, “continues Sarah. “Once all it took was the twitch of a net curtain, but now the UK’s nosey neighbours are more likely to be peering through

the slats of a shutter! “With their sleek good looks and practicality they have many plus points giving privacy, light control, sound and draught proofing. And like a key piece of furniture, shutters stand the test of time as more homeowners opt to buy once and buy well rather than going for an off-the-shelf fashion fix.” Pleats are a massive trend in fashion this season and where the High Street leads, interior design invariably follows. Many pleated blind fabrics feature a solar reflective backing so the blind can reflect heat and light from the sun to help keep you cool in the summer whilst retaining heat in the chillier months. “It’s also worth noting that tab pleated blinds which have no cords or loops are completely child safe and therefore the ideal choice for a nursery or child’s bedroom.”

Salad of Pickled artichokeS

watercress, toasted hazelnuts, hazelnut mayonnaise

AT THIS TIME OF YEAR THE KITCHEN IS OVERFLOWING WITH PRODUCE FROM THE KITCHEN GARDEN. HERE WE HAVE TAKEN THE VIOLET ARTICHOKE AS A BASE FOR A DELICIOUS STARTER OR A LIGHT LUNCH. THE VIOLET ARTICHOKE IS MORE TENDER AND FORGIVING IN ITS PREPARATION TO THAT OF ITS LARGER BROTHER THE GLOBE ARTICHOKE

Ingredients

Pickled Artichokes 150 g blanched shelled hazelnuts 1 small bag young watercress 1 tables coriander seeds Pinch salt 8 violet artichokes 50 g girolle mushrooms 1 granny smith apple peeled and cut into thin strips – add lemon juice to stop discolouration Juice of four lemons Mayonnaise 2 yolks 270 ml groundnut oil 20 ml hazelnut oil 1 tsp mustard powder 1 tsp white wine vinegar

Pickled Artichoke 1. Start by bringing a large pan of salted water to the boil with the lemon juice and coriander seeds 2. Firstly tear down on the largest leaves of the violet artichoke back to just above the edible base. 3. Finish with a sharp knife to cut in half lengthwise, trim the edge and a little of the stem, cut in half lengthways and cook for approx half an hour until tender. Remove from heat and allow to cool in the liquor. 4. Meanwhile toast the hazelnuts either in a hot pan or hot oven until golden brown. 5. Leave to cool and then roughly chop with a knife.

Whisk in the hazelnut oil to finish, add the white wine vinegar to thin the mayonnaise a little and salt to taste Hazelnut Dressing 9. Mix the ground nut oil with the hazelnut oil and white wine vinegar, add a pinch of salt and a squeeze of lemon juice. To serve Dress four plates with a teaspoon of the hazelnut mayonnaise and then arrange the pickled artichokes, add a scattering of the watercress leaves and the toasted hazelnuts and garnish with the thin strips of granny smith apple.

Chef ’s tip

Artichokes oxidise and discolour extremely quickly so rub each prepared artichoke with the squeezed out husk of the lemon.

THE MOST EXPENSIVE WINE IN THE WORLD AT FIRST GLANCE IT MAY NOT SEEM LIKE A WINE BOTTLE BUT THIS GLASS AND METAL CONE CONTAINS THE MOST EXPENSIVE WINE. The world’s most expensive bottle of wine has gone on sale for a staggering £109,000 - making the cost of just one small 150ml glass of this rare tipple a bank-breaking £21,000, enough for 5,250 glasses of wine in a pub. Australian winery Penfolds has released 12 special bottles of the 2004 Block 42’ Cabernet Sauvignon - a rare single-vineyard wine which is only released in stellar vintages. The red wine, comes in an Ampoule which is hand-blown by Nick Mount, a famous glass artist from Adelaide. The ampoule has no cork or screw cap, and can only be opened by a trained wine expert. The ampoule is designed to provide the ideal environment for the wine - and even the most cavalier of millionaires cannot just whip the top off the bottle and quaff the contents. The Block 42 vines were 88

J U LY /A U G U S T 2 0 1 2

transported from France to Australia in the 1830s and are now located in South Australia’s Barossa Valley, northeast of Adelaide. Penfolds said the vines are thought to be the oldest continuously producing Cabernet Sauvignon vines in the world. Penfolds chief winemaker Peter Gago said: ‘There is something really magical about the 2004 Block 42 Kalimna Cabernet. ‘It has an ethereal dimension and a saturated blackness on the palate, it’s extraordinarily perfumed with layer upon layer of flavour.’ Penfolds’ chief winemaker Peter Gago said that if any buyer wished to drink the exclusive wine, a Penfolds winemaker would travel to wherever the buyer was in the world and open and decant the ampoule using bespoke equipment in a special ceremony. He said: ‘The Ampoule Project is typical of the pioneering philosophy behind Penfolds’ winemaking evolution. ‘The collaboration with South Australia’s finest artists has been a fitting tribute for one of South Australia’s finest wines.’
