HENLEY’S LOCAL MUSEUM BUCKS NATIONAL TREND AS IT ANNOUNCES RECORD VISITOR FIGURES AND IS RANKED IN THE TOP 50 MUSEUMS IN THE WORLD. JACK HICKMOTT LOOKS AT THIS SUCCESS AND SPEAKS TO PAUL MAINDS, THE MUSEUM’S CHIEF EXECUTIVE.
NATIONAL RECOGNITION E
arly last month, the River & Rowing Museum, Henley on Thames, announced record breaking visitor numbers for the past 12 months in the same week as it was ranked in the Top 50 museums in the world by The Times alongside global institutions like the British Museum and Acropolis Museum, Athens. The regional museum opened just 15 years ago in November 1998 and has bucked the trend for
privately funded cultural organisations by attracting more than 117,000 visitors from around the world in the last 12 months – a six percent rise on the previous year. Visitor numbers at the award-winning museum have increased year-on-year since the 14

museum’s opening with it becoming increasingly popular with international visitors thanks to a fascinating rolling temporary exhibition programme and highly comprehensive permanent collection of historical rowing artefacts. Paul Mainds, Chief Executive of the Museum, said that “The increase in visitor numbers is a wonderful reflection of our very special temporary exhibitions and, of course, our marketing initiatives” and there are clearly some exciting plans afoot; the museum is somewhat of a flag bearer for local museums in the area and will soon be launching a website promoting the Thames Valley Museum’s Group that will unite nearly 70 museums along the Thames Valley cultural belt – an area with more musuems per square mile than nearly anywhere else in Britain. Being ranked in the Top 50 museums in the world is also a significant achievement for Henley’s museum. From the Acropolis to the V&A, The Times’ top 50 list features some of the most highly regarded museums around the world, with the River
& Rowing Musuem one of only four independently funded musuems in the UK. A delighted Paul Mainds was also buzzing to tell me the news. “It’s also amazing for us, after only 15 years, to be ranked alongside such a high calibre of international museums and I am sure that all of Henley will take pride in this. This has only been possible through the enthusiasm and generosity of our trustees and supporters, and we are very grateful.” Henley on Thames has long been highly regarded for being the international home of rowing and increasingly so in recent years for its Musuem. Last year’s programme of exhibitons, centred around the London 2012 Olympic Games, received national and international recognition with a large amount of coverage in China. The news of record visitor numbers is also a reflection of the musuem’s ongoing education programme and their commitment to championing museum learning. Education work at the museum remains a priority and there were almost 22,000 users of the Arbib
Educational centre last year – also a new record. Late last month, the museum will open a fascinating exhibition that brings together the unique

objects and artworks from the historic tradition of Swan Upping, the annual census of swans that takes place on the Thames every July. To find out more visit rrm.com and follow @River_Rowing on twitter for latest news and updates.

veryone loves a cookery book – whether poring over recipes for inspiration or giving them as gifts –nothing quite sets a foodie’s heart alight like a new cookery book. At Chorleywood Bookshop, we know just how excited people get about food. Last year, in association with Random House, we decided to celebrate what brilliant food writers and chefs we have in the UK by bringing them under the same roof for a day. It appears Hertfordshire just can’t get enough of it so we’re back – bigger and better – with The Happy Foodie Festival on 28th September. This year, we’ve got something for everyone from Michelin stars to Masterchef stars, via a galaxy of global cuisine and fascinating characters from the world of food. We’re kicking off the day with stars of the small screen, Bake Off ’s most enthusiastic wearer of fair-isle, James Morton, and Lorraine Kelly’s very own Masterchef finalist, Dean Edwards. They will be demonstrating from their new books as well as talking about what popular television shows
16

have done for cooking in the UK. Times cook Lindsey Bareham will be in discussion with Michelin starred chef Alexis Gauthier about everything from recipe following to British and French cuisine. There will also be an opportunity to learn about spices from all around the world as we are introduced to streetfood entrepreneurs Van Tran and Anh Vu and their Vietnamese market, Stevie Parle from Channel 4’s Spice Trip and Comptoir Libanais’ owner Tony Kitous. With the ethics of getting food to our table, be that horse meat or GM crops, being a constant source of debate in the media. We’ll be hosting a
provocative ethical discussion with the modern peasant Jojo Tulloh, vegan baker Ms Cupcake and The Ethicurean. This will be followed by the inspiring Saturday Kitchen-regular Michael Caines, demonstrating the very best of his home cooking. Levi Roots and Shelina Permalloo will be bringing a little sunshine to our slightly disappointing summer, with tropical demonstrations. And finally, Cleo Rocos will be introducing us to tequila in just about the most entertaining way you could imagine. As if this wasn’t all enough, there will be local suppliers, plenty to taste and goody bags to
take home. What can you expect? Flavours from across the world, opportunities to taste new and exciting foods and witness some of Britain’s very best chefs in action. And the best bit is you can take a little bit of it all home with you with the delicious cookery books on offer. The Happy Foodie Festival, Saturday 28th September 2013 Royal Masonic School for Girls, Rickmansworth WD3 4HF Single event tickets are £10. Full day tickets are £25. Day tickets also entitle you to 50% off the price of any book by an author appearing at the festival. Tickets can be purchased instore or over the phone (01923 283 566).

swan UPPING ON THE THAMES
T
he River & Rowing Museum has created a major exhibition that celebrates and reveals the untold aspects of the ancient Thames tradition of Swan Upping. Through a comprehensive series of stories, artefacts and film footage, visitors to the Museum will learn about the intriguing lives of Swan Markers and the yearly swan count – an event steeped in Royal tradition. David Barber, The Queen’s Swan Marker, who leads the annual procession said: “There is a fantastic array of unseen items that have been loaned by The Queen. What carries the most impact for me are the old articles and newspaper clippings that illustrate the comparison between Swan Upping 100 years ago to how and why we do it today. The emphasis has entirely changed from a custom focused on the ownership and even the consumption of swans, to the sole purpose of conserving these beautiful and uniquely royal birds.” Swan Upping has become the annual monitoring of the swan population on stretches of the Thames in the counties of Middlesex, Surrey, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire. SWAN UPPING, THE 900 YEAR-OLD TRADITION OF COUNTING THE QUEEN’S SWANS, IS CELEBRATED AT HENLEY’S RIVER & ROWING MUSEUM IN A UNIQUE EXHIBITION WHICH IS OPEN NOW UNTIL MAY 2014. GEORGE EDDY TALKS TO THE QUEEN’S SWAN MARKER, DAVID BARBER, TO FIND OUT THE HISTORY OF THIS 900 YEAR-OLD TRADITION AND WHY IT IS RELEVANT TODAY. banquets and feasts. few exceptions to The Queen’s sole ownership of British swans. The Vinters and Dyers mark the mute swans with a stainless steel ring, whereas the royal swans are left unmarked. However, this is more due to ritual than ownership nowadays. This five-day event is visually striking, with all involved dressed in traditional attire. The annual Swan Upping ceremony takes place every year during the third week of July. The Queen's Swan Marker, the Royal Swan Uppers and the Swan Uppers of the Vintners' Company and the Worshipful Company of Dyers' use six traditional Thames rowing skiffs for their 79-mile journey
up-river. They cry “All up!” whenever a brood of cygnets is sighted and the birds are weighed, measured, checked and ringed. Today the primary purpose of the event is conservation. As part of the River & Rowing Museum’s Jubilee celebrations, the exhibition complements an on-going Museum Education project. David, who is at the spearhead of this education initiative, points out that: “With funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, and support from the Vintners’ Company, The Worshipful Company of Dyers and the River & Rowing Museum, we encourage schools to be part of this tradition so that children can learn about the river. We let children participate in the swan weighing process so that they can understand these beautiful birds first hand. We also talk to them about any questions they have on conservation. We are striving to protect the river by educating the next generation about the destructive impact of vandalism to swan nests, shooting swans with air rifles, and the dangers of the cygnets getting caught in fishing tackle.”
The Swan Uppers also work with the Oxford University Zoology Department to monitor the welfare of the birds. Since the 1980s, a Thames swan’s life expectancy has increased from 3 to 8 years, helped by improved awareness of the dangers of electrical cables, plastic waste and lead poisoning by fishermen. When asked about the new exhibition David said: “I am delighted to have been involved with the development of the educational project and the exhibition about Swan Upping with the River & Rowing Museum. The museum is a wonderful resource for people of all ages to learn about the river, particularly children, and it is vitally important to teach people about rivers and the wildlife they support. Rivers form part of our heritage and their conservation is of paramount importance not only to the creatures that live on or near them, but to the population at large. I am pleased that Swan Upping provides an opportunity to raise the profile of conservation on the river while bringing much pleasure and increasing the knowledge of the children we encounter during the week.” To find out more visit rrm.com and follow @River_Rowing on twitter for latest news and updates. The Museum, terrace café and shop are open every day from 10am - 5.30pm.

Now in its 18th year, it is Britain’s largest outdoor classical music event and a stirring finale to two months of the finest music-making at the BBC Proms.
M
The Roxy Music founder and solo artist is celebrating the 40th anniversary of his career and with three number one albums under his belt and worldwide record sales exceeding 30 million, he is firmly cemented as one of the giants of contemporary music. Bryan Ferry’s success as a singer and songwriter has become a benchmark in popular music and his live set featuring The Bryan Ferry Orchestra at Proms in the Park promises to provide a rousing close to the fun and festivities of the Last Night of the Proms celebrations.
The party gets under way with boy band Blue, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers and their signature ‘Bagrock’ sound, BBC 6 Music presenter Craig Charles and his Fantasy Funk Band, and Proms in the Park regulars, the Royal Choral Society performing alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra and conductor Richard Balcombe. Radio 2 DJ Tony Blackburn will host the early evening entertainment, whilst Sir Terry Wogan returns to present the main evening performance for the 17th year running.
Bryan Ferry says: “I am delighted to bring both my band and The Bryan Ferry Orchestra to Proms in the Park and am looking forward to performing in Hyde Park with the BBC Concert Orchestra.”

FILM4 SUMMER SCREEN AT SOMERSET HOUSE WITH AMERICAN EXPRESS ®
8TH – 21ST AUGUST 2013 omerset House stages London’s best-loved open-air cinema, Film4 Summer Screen this August with an extended programme of 14 nights of films, featuring classics, comedy, romance and thrillers, presented in the magnificent 18th century courtyard on a giant 17 x 8 metre screen with full surround sound. With early evening DJ sessions, food and drink and special live introductions to selected films, Film4 Summer Screen is the ultimate cinema experience and a highlight of the summer calendar.

Tina Fey, Marlon Brando and Robert de Niro are some of the names who will grace the big screen this year, with season highlights including: MEAN GIRLS A brash black-comedy written by Tina Fey that follows the teenage trials of Lindsay Lohan as she negotiates the clique-ridden world of the classroom. With bullying and backbiting making life a misery for those not amongst the chosen few, Lohan sets out to bring down the girls who think they rule the school. Swift and savage, with some of the sharpest gags in teen-movie history.
KES Director Ken Loach’s unforgettable debut from 1969 follows the story of a young Barnsley boy who secretly keeps and trains a kestrel, the bird’s flight providing an inspiring symbol of escape amidst oppressive surroundings. A beautiful film now routinely considered to be a British classic, this is an intimate, human-scale film that really soars on the big-screen.
GUYS AND DOLLS A bright and romantic musical classic, which splashes sensational Broadway style and swagger across the big-screen as it makes its way from a stylised New York to the swirling, seductive backdrop of Havana. Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando and Jean Simmons are the stars of this streetwise favourite, with the sing-along set-pieces ranging from show-stopping group numbers to intimate torch songs.
THE UNTOUCHABLES Thrilling action in a classical style – Brian De Palma’s tale of G-men versus gangsters in Prohibition-era Chicago reinvents the mobster movie for a modern 28

audience while retaining some old-school elegance. Robert DeNiro, Kevin Costner and an Oscar-winning Sean Connery provide the acting muscle, while Ennio Morricone’s score propels the viewer through to that memorable final showdown on the train station steps.
The full programme will be announced in May. For the third year running, American Express’ partnership with Film4 Summer Screen at Somerset House enables Cardmembers to benefit from presale and reserved tickets to all shows. Summer Screen Prints Exhibition To coincide with this year’s screenings, Somerset House and Film4 have teamed up with Dalston studios Print Club London to curate a one-off poster exhibition in the newly opened West Wing Galleries. Working with some of the biggest and best illustrators from the UK and USA, they will design and produce 17 new, original silk screen prints inspired by the roster of films screened at Film4 Summer Screen with American Express this year. Some of the illustrators include Kate Gibb (creator of Chemical Brothers album artwork), Anthony Burrill, Olly Moss (who recently designed a new set of Star Wars trilogy posters), James Joyce and Michael Gillette as well as newcomers Hattie Stewart and Serge Seidlitz. The prints will be editions of 200, each signed by the artist and for sale at £40. Somerset House is a spectacular neo-classical building in the heart of London, sitting between the Strand and the River Thames. Since opening to the public in 2000, Somerset House has produced a distinctive public programme that annually draws over 2.5 million visitors to the site, providing a stimulating environment for exploration and relaxation. The varied, year-round programme includes an open air film and concert season and ice rink, as well as temporary exhibitions focusing on contemporary fashion, design, art and architecture, family workshops and free guided tours. In September 2009, Somerset House became the new home of London Fashion Week. For more info visit somersethouse.org.uk

St James’s Concours of Elegance announces stellar line-up of cars 5TH - 7TH SEPTEMBER 2013 - ROYAL LAWNS OF ST JAMES’S, CENTRAL LONDON ast year the Royal lawns of Windsor Castle, this year the Royal gardens of St James’s. Sixty rare motor cars are being lined up for the historic garden party of the year. In just one year, the UK’s Concours of Elegance has become one of the most talked about events in the international historic car calendar.
L
Organisers of the UK’s 2013 Concours of Elegance have announced its line-up of spectacular cars which will be on display at Marlborough House, in London’s historic St James’s, a 300-year-old Royal Palace adjacent to St James’s Palace and The Mall. With over 20 cars coming from the UK, 16 from Europe, 13 from the States and the rest from as far afield as Argentina, Mexico and Russia, many of these cars have never before been seen in public. Included in the line-up is the 1928 Bugatti Type 35B, winner of the first Monaco Grand Prix in 1929; the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, the first super car of the post-war era, ordered by the “King of Hollywood” Clark Gable which he enjoyed until his death in 1960; and a 1954 Ferrari 375 MM Scaglietti once owned by Roberto Rossellini. Not to mention two World Speed Record holders and a number of other unique cars with notable histories both on and off the track. An extremely eclectic mix of rare cars, offering something for everyone. In keeping with the prestigious Central London address, the ambition is to ensure that the St James’s Concours of Elegance is a truly glamorous 32

occasion with the emphasis on style and elegance. Apart from being ‘the’ historic motoring social event of the year, it will have all the sophistication of a major social gathering. ‘A London happening’, a select group of guests from around the world. It is with great pleasure that Concours of Elegance can announce that HRH Prince Michael of Kent has agreed to become Patron of the Concours of Elegance. Prince Michael is a keen ‘hands on’ motoring enthusiast. As well as being President of The Royal Automobile Club and Patron of Benjafields Racing Club, His Royal Highness is also an Honorary Member of the Bentley Drivers’ Club and the British Racing Drivers’ Club, and will officially open the Concours as well as attending the event and meeting the owners and their guests. The very best in gourmet food and fine wine will be on offer in a specially constructed hospitality facility. The event aims to raise money for a number of charities working in the field of cancer care, support and research. Last year’s event raised in excess of £250,000 for charities, and for 2013, as part of the programme of Concours events, all Owners will be invited to a private gala dinner to celebrate our charity partnership and raise funds for our chosen cause. Any charitable donation will be gratefully received and will contribute significantly to the success of the St James’s Concours of Elegance. Provisions exist for making tax efficient donations both here and abroad.

The funds raised through the St. James’s Concours of Elegance will be granted to Marie Curie Cancer Care, Pilotlight, Rosetrees Trust, and Action on Bladder Cancer. The 2012 event raised over £250,000 for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Cancer Research UK. The ambitious target for 2013 is £500,000. Concours d’Elégance date from 17th century France where the aristocracy paraded their highly ornate horse-drawn carriages through the parks of Paris. In time the carriages became horseless and the gatherings became a competitive ‘beauty pageant’ for automobile owners. The success of a concours ultimately comes down to the excellence of the cars entered. The rarer and more significant the examples on show, the better the concours. A car’s history and provenance will not only make it more collectable but also make it more exciting to see on show. In reality a concours is an exhibition of priceless art. Automotive sculptures that stand as a lasting testament to the brilliance of pioneering engineers, innovative designers and skilled coachbuilders. Uniquely, as this is a British event, we are calling it a ‘Concours of Elegance’. For details of the prestigious cars on display and to purchase tickets in advance, please visit www.concoursofelegance.co.uk or by calling The Ticket Factory on 0844 338 8000.
Leading automotive poster artist, Charles Avalon, has depicted The Mall, London’s principal processionary route, embellished with ceremonial flags, with Buckingham Palace visible in the distance. To the fore are some of the stunning motor cars that will participate in the event, including the sublime 1932 Bugatti Type 50T Coupe Profilée leading the way. Pullman Editions designs, commissions and publishes striking original posters which capture the enduring appeal of Art Deco. Their exclusive editions portray the very essence of glamour from a bygone era, and reflect the call for stylish, decorative yet affordable Art Deco posters. After training in graphic design, Charles Avalon spent several years as an advertising agency art director before becoming a freelance illustrator working mainly on national and international advertising campaigns. He has always had a strong interest in Art Deco graphics and industrial design. Later, Charles decided to concentrate more on fine art, which he has been able to combine with his love of cars. Unlike many modern artists who work digitally, all of Avalon’s work is hand drawn and painted, mainly in gouache and sometimes acrylic. He is the principal house artist at Pullman Editions. n these straightened times, adding to your watch collection may not seem to be a priority but the continued year-on-year growth of the UK watch market is evidence that many of us are doing just that. If we are to embrace this fascination with watches, there are still ways to save money y,, or maybe just to spend it more wisely y. The last two years has seen explosive growth in the pre-owned watch market. Following the pattern set by the ing that they automotive industry, more consumers are realising n’’t they have never bought a car as its first owner so why shouldn take the same attitude with watches. This way the buyer can avoid the initial hit of VAT and depreciation enabling them to save money on their intended purchase or move up to a brand that they would otherwise be unable to afford.

Once you stray from the watch brands’ official dealer network, there are risks of course. There are the watch equivalent of the backstreet car lot, selling pieces of dubious origin, put together from a y,, or may not, be what they t seem. Buying variety of parts which may a watch from an auction house such as Fellows gives you piece of mind on this point. The large number of specialists within the watch department creates a wind ranging pool of knowledge across many brands and eras of production. This ensures that fakes are rooted out and that the rest of the watches offered for sale are described fully disclosing any aftermarket additions or alterations accurately y, ful that may have been made. Fellows are famous for the depth and rigor of the condition reports that we produce for each watch. Eschewing a simple grading system which may be misleading, each watch is inspected under 10x magnification both inside and outside the case. Every mark, dent or scratch is noted to ensure that there are no unpleasant surprises. Bidders have such confidence in this approach that they are willing to bid from around the word on the 38

The Fellows Vintage and Modern Wristwatch Auction of 15th Ju uly 2013 provides three such examples, although many more may be found. The Omega Seamaster chronograph is rightly regarded as a quality prestige watch which holds its value well in the pre-owned market. Consider Lot 105 from Longines, Swatchgroup stable mate of Omega, who’s equally robust and wellmade Hydroconquest chronograph sells at auction for a quarter of the price. If you like the sparse Teutonic style of A. Lange & Söhne but don n’’t quite have the cash, take a look at Lot 60 by Glashütte Original, the Saxon neighbours have a verry y similar look but the Glashütte will relive you of a lot less cash. The Rolex Daytona is one of the most sought after sports chronographs in the world and their second hand values reflect this. If you want a Rolex-made case and bracelet but are happy with an ET TA movement then the Tudor Oystersdate Chronograph is the budget option. Wimbledon Highlights
Andy Murray wins the Championship in Historic Style Andy makes glorious history by winning Wimbledon 2013, nearly eight decades after Fred Perry won his last of three titles at The Championships in 1936. Andy Murray defeats Novak Djokovic 6-4, 7-5, 6-4 The frenzied scenes witnessed during the 2012 Olympics last year were a once in a lifetime….or so we thought. It took just 11 months and Britain made sporting history at Wimbledon.
a smile as wide as the sky. Murray celebrated with the crowds, so he could exchange high-fives. He moved to embrace Djokovic – and then sank to the turf, kneeling, his head on the ground as if in prayer. On this most public of stages, it was an intensely private moment.
An immense silence engulfed the Centre Court on Sunday 7th July. Three agonising Championship points had escaped Murray’s grasp, and now he had earned a fourth by rescuing a rally. He did not know it, but this was his time. No Briton had won the men’s Wimbledon title since Fred Perry in 1936. Destiny was at Murray’s shoulder, and this would be history.
15,000 people in the Centre Court were chanting his name. By now the presentation party was all but ready, only now could Murray summon the strength to reach the people he cares about the most. Making the time-honoured climb to the players’ box, he embraced them all, an acknowledgment of a debt repaid by all sides to all others. He did not stop shaking his head until his fingertips touched the golden trophy. If his eyes saw the inscription upon the ancient cup, he will have read the words: “All England Lawn Tennis Club Single Handed Championship of the World.” It is the very grail of tennis, and it belongs to Andy Murray.
Moments later the air was torn apart by a roar like no other. All his life Andy Murray would have thought of the moment he became Wimbledon champion. The racket flew from his hand and he turned to the crowd with

Say it again! Say it 77 more times. Murray’s win is the first by a British man at Wimbledon in singles since Fred Perry won the title here in 1936. Virginia Wade was the last Briton to win in singles before Murray, doing so in 1977. Murray mania has hit Britain! Andy Murray after his victory win said “I understand how much everyone else wanted to see a British winner. I hope you enjoyed it, I tried my best. Before the final game I was thinking where I was going to put my first serve, because often when you’re serving for matches the first point of that game is crucial. Then I won the first three points – and it was the hardest game ever, the hardest few points I ever played. At the end of the match I didn’t quite know what was going on. It’s been a blur from then to now. Winning Wimbledon is the pinnacle of tennis.” Then Andy Murray shook his head, just as he had in the first moments of his victory. “I can’t believe it,” he said. “I can’t believe it.” “I know how much this means to him, his team and to his country. That makes his success even bigger. There are a lot of expectations on him. After being in the finals, he comes up with a championship run. I gave it my all, but it wasn’t enough.” -Novak Djokovic after his loss As well as the cheering crowds, there was a jam-packed Royal Box, which included British Prime Minister David Cameron, Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic, the Duke of Kent, Greg Rusedski, Stan Smith as well as Victoria Beckham, actors Gerard Butler and Bradley Cooper, football star Wayne Rooney and golf champion Justin Rose. The Scotsman partied that evening at the Wimbledon Championships 2013 Winners Ball, held at the Intercontinental London Park Lane Hotel in Mayfair. He was joined by his girlfriend Kim Sears, his mother and father, Judy and William, as well as several of the VIPs who watched him defeat Serbian player Djokovic on Centre Court.

There were of course other successes at Wimbledon 2013, understandably overshadowed by Andy Murray’s Championship victory…. The Wimbledon 2013 Ladies Singles Title Marion Bartoli, the nearly girl of the 2007 Championships, finally realised the dream she first had as a six-year-old by winning the Ladies’ Singles title. Her 6-1, 6-4 victory over Sabine Lisicki, while thoroughly deserved, was considerably eased by a nervy performance by her opponent until late in the second set. At 6-1, 5-1 Bartoli had three match points, a crisis which finally stirred Lisicki into a late, but eventually vain, rally. As she hammered down an ace on her fourth match point at 5-4, the 28-year-old Frenchwoman dropped her racket, fell to her knees and then rose to embrace her opponent at the net before setting off on the climb to the box occupied by her team, which included the only other Frenchwoman to have won Wimbledon in the Open Era, Amelie Mauresmo. Even when she was 4-1 up in the first set Bartoli was seeking ways to do even better, and she sent two of her rackets to her coaching team’s box to have them restrung. They were returned at a crucial time, just as Lisicki got back to 4-5 in the second set, and Bartoli promptly used one to serve out to love, ending with only her second ace of the match. Bartoli wrapped up the first set in just half an hour and though she was made to fight harder in the second set she embarked on another irresistible surge of five successive games and was resilient enough to fight off the German counter-attack. She is £1.6 million richer, but what matters to this woman of unique and assorted talent is that her childhood dream finally came true. At her news conference, Bartoli was still struggling to come to terms with her achievement.

“I still can’t realise I’m a Wimbledon champion, it’s just so overwhelming,” she said. As a pro your dream is to win a Grand Slam, you dream about it every single day, you think about it every single day. So when it actually happens you have achieved something you have dreamed about for millions of hours. You went through pain, you went through tears, you went through low moments. Then, once it happens, in those five, 10 seconds before you shake the hand of your opponent, you feel you’re almost not walking any more on earth. You’re really flying. Even in my perfect dream I couldn’t have dreamed a moment like that. That is beyond perfection. “I felt I played probably my best match of the Championships. It’s really amazing to win Wimbledon and to do it playing well, it’s just unbelievable. And to finish on an ace.” The Wimbledon 2013 Mixed Doubles Championship Was won by Daniel Nestor and Kristina Mladenovic. The No. 8 seeds in the mixed event, Nestor and Mladenovic overcame the top seeds Lisa Raymond and Bruno Soares 5-7, 6-2, 8-6. “It’s an amazing result,” said Mladenovic. “We just played twice and made both final and winning today. Daniel is such a good player. He has lot of experience. “I try to do my job, and he’s helping me a lot at the net. I think we play good at important moment. Many matches we manage to get through tough ones. You know, it’s just great. It’s going really well.” Raymond and Nestor could have just as easily been champions themselves, having two match points of their own when leading 6-5 in the third set. But 20-year old Mladenovic, the youngest player on court, showed composure beyond her years to hold her nerve and eventually her serve and tie the deciding set at six games apiece. “First was a good first serve, and then... he had the right decision going down the line but just didn’t make it, so we were happy for that,” explained Mladenovic.
Two crucial errors in the next game cost Raymond and Soares as first Raymond missed a volley then Soares sent a backhand careering into the net. With the vital final set break in hand, Nestor, who has 80 career doubles titles in his keeping, coolly served the match out. It was an especially difficult loss for Raymond who was hoping to defend the title she won with Mike Bryan last year. In the first set it was the top seeds who broke in the 12th game, off the back of a brilliant Soares backhand volley down the line, to take the set 7-5. Nestor and Mladenovic fought back in the second set as they brushed off the cobwebs to take control. Clean hitting and some sharp volleying from the Canadian-French duo saw them take the second set 6-2, sending the match to a deciding third set. The final set was a much tighter affair as Raymond and Soares raised their game. Both teams had their chances to break, first the top seeds in the fourth game, then Nestor and Mladenovic in the seventh game before the top seeds had two match points that they were unable to convert late in the match. After the match, Nestor was full of praise for rising star Mladenovic. “She’s going to be one of the top singles players eventually. Right now I’m catching her while she’s maybe not winning four or five matches in singles. She’s winning two or three, so hopefully that will change for her. “Right now, you know, she’s focusing on doubles and mixed. I think that will change one day. Deckchair Dreams Returns for Royal Parks Foundation’s 10th Anniversary The Royal Parks Foundation is celebrating 10 years of helping support the magic of London’s amazing Royal Parks with a stunning new collection of limited edition deckchairs. Ronnie Wood, Michael Craig Martin, Julia Bradbury and Miranda Richardson are among the luminaries supplying designs for the Bloomberg-sponsored Deckchair Dreams project, which has previously showcased work by Tracey Emin, Damien Hirst, Joanna Lumley and Alexander McQueen. This year’s collection, the fifth since 2006, will see 550 designer chairs grace the green spaces of five of London’s central Royal Parks. Almost 40 million Londoners and visitors enjoy exploring the eight Royal Parks each year. The Royal Parks are: Bushy Park, The Green Park, Greenwich Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, The Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill, Richmond Park and St James’s ParkBased on the theme of Nature’s Grand Designs, it features specially commissioned deckchairs by celebrities from the worlds of visual art, music, performing arts and design, who have drawn inspiration from the natural world. Bloomberg staff and local community groups have also had the opportunity to submit designs via a competition. Work from two local schools, an arts group and Age UK residents will all feature in the collection. This innovative public art adventure aims to bring art and design to the Parks’ visitors, and to raise awareness and funding for cultural, heritage, education and conservation projects across London’s eight Royal Parks. Since 2006, more than £250,000 has been raised via the sale of the designer deckchairs, helping to support a range of work from a fungus survey in Richmond Park to new swings for the Diana Playground in Kensington Gardens. Funds raised this year are intended to support the restoration of five children’s playgrounds and assist with smaller 46

projects, such as bulb planting and habitat management. This year’s collection, which also includes designs by Harry Enfield, Martha Freud and Take That’s Howard Donald, will be out in Hyde Park, The Green Park, St James’s Park, Kensington Gardens and The Regent’s Park from July 4th until the end of October. Sara Lom, Chief Executive of the Royal Parks Foundation, said: “Deckchairs are such a wonderful British icon and a real feature of summer in the Royal Parks. We’ve received some wonderful interpretations of the theme - Nature’s Grand Designs - from this year’s artists, which will hopefully encourage visitors to think about the value of nature – as well as give them somewhere stylish to sit! We can’t wait to see the new designs out in the Parks.” This year’s designs are now available to view following the official launch earlier this month. Christian Louboutin Opens men’s boutique in Selfridges Luxury French designer Christian Louboutin is pleased to announce the opening of a boutique within landmark London department store, Selfridges. he 51 metres square space sits within the Men’s Shoes department - the largest retail space dedicated to men’s footwear in the world - on the store’s first floor, and offers a wide selection from the shoe collection alongside bags and small leather goods. The boutique is the second dedicated Men’s retail space for Christian Louboutin within the UK.
A wooden panelled wall in the signature Louboutin red welcomes visitors to the boutique and offers an enticing glimpse of the space inside via an internal window feature which also acts as display area for key seasonal styles. Marble, sourced in Morocco by Christian Louboutin, marks the threshold of the entrance – its high gloss finish contrasting with the soft leather and woven wilton carpet floor finishes throughout the boutique in signature red and deep grey tones.
Designer William Russell of Pentagram Design was commissioned to create a store concept which would deliver an immersive, masculine environment which also captured the spirit of the Christian Louboutin brand and celebrated the sense of theatricality seen in Louboutin’s designs.
The theme of contrast continues throughout the boutique with a combination of textures and materials employed to create a luxurious environment. At the rear of the space wood veneer walls and velvet upholstered seating soften and offer balance to the marble detailing found throughout and spiked metal detailing within display cases.

The space includes a central ceiling lighting feature, a bespoke design by Pentagram. Here, light travels directly down cut glass tubes to illuminate central display areas, whilst additional lighting is given from the back lit display shelves, featuring alabaster sourced from Spain. The collection is presented on a dynamic central display which utilises hand turned and carved wooden plinths of varying heights with integral red pony skin seats and houses both shoes and bags. A dedicated area was conceived for small leather goods with a glass display case framing a selection of wallets and electronic goods holders. The launch collection in store will include Spring Summer pieces taking inspiration from this season’s brights theme, including the brogue-inspired Golfito and the popular Louis Spiked high top trainer alongside exclusive styles. Highlights for Autumn Winter in store include updates on classic styles such as the Rollerboy, found in rich velvet for the new season and for the more adventurous dresser; a glittering toe cap on the Bruno Orlato dress shoe or all out statement wear in the glitter encrusted Dandy. Christian Louboutin Christian Louboutin was created in 1992 when Louboutin opened his first store at 19 Jean-Jacques Rousseau in Paris. The brand currently has 73 stores worldwide including a number of dedicated Men’s boutiques. A seminal volume entitled ‘Christian Louboutin’ charts the success of the company over the last two decades and is available now, published by Rizzoli. Recent special collaborations with legendary Parisian Cabaret, Crazy Horse and Walt Disney Studios along with
special projects with those from the worlds of music, art and film typify the creative dexterity of the designer. A retrospective exhibition of his inventive designs was held last year at London’s prestigious Design Museum and begins its global tour from Summer 2013. www.christianlouboutin.com Selfridges The business was founded by American entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge in 1909 and was widely regarded as the first and best example of a modern department store. Gordon Selfridge ran the store himself until he retired in 1940. After several ownerships the company was demerged from the Sears Group in 1998 and floated on the London Stock Exchange. In 2003 W. Galen Weston purchased Selfridges and under his ownership Selfridges has become a unique UK destination for fashion, luxury and retail theatre known for its world-class yet egalitarian customer approach. In June 2010 Selfridges was named Best Department Store in the World by the IGDS (Intercontinental Group of Department Stores). The title, which Selfridges held until June 2012, is the industry’s highest accolade. Selfridges won the title again in June 2012, for an unprecedented two times consecutively. Q&A
WITH THE AWARD WINNING DENTIST
DR SHAMEEK POPAT
WOW! FINALLY WE GOT A SUMMER AND I FOR ONE HAVE THOROUGHLY ENJOYED THE DAYS OF SUNSHINE. IT’S BEEN A GREAT SUMMER IN TERMS OF SPORT WITH THE LIONS WINNING AND ANDY MURRAY WINNING WIMBLEDON. WE JUST NEED THE CRICKET TEAM TO WIN THE ASHES AND THE TRILOGY WILL BE COMPLETE. IT WAS GREAT TO SEE ANDY MURRAY’S MOTHER JUDY SMILING AND SHOWING OFF HER LOVELY CROWNS AND VENEERS BUT I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE SEEN SOME MORE CHARACTER AND DEPTH IN THEM TO REFLECT HER FACE SHAPE AND PERSONALITY! I DO BELIEVE TEETH SHOULD HAVE CHARACTER AND PERSONALITY TO ENHANCE THE SMILE AND BELONG TO THE PERSON. WHICH LEADS US NICELY INTO OUR Q&A THIS MONTH.
Q
. Dear Dr Popat, could you please explain the difference between a Crown, Cap and a Veneer? .Those of us working in the Dental profession often assume everybody knows everything we are talking about. Therefore I would like to thank you for asking this question, as it is one of the things that so many people get mixed up with. A crown is an artificial cover that is used to restore, protect, and strengthen your tooth and keep it healthy. The crown fits right over the remaining part of the tooth, making it strong and giving it the shape and contour of a natural tooth. Crowns are sometimes also known as ‘caps’. You only need one if;
A
• You have a tooth that has been worn down by teeth grinding, an improper bite, or decay, a crown restoration could save it. • Crowns will give cracked or broken teeth much-needed support. • A tooth that has loosened due to gum disease can be stabilised by crowning it and connecting it to the neighbouring teeth within reason. • Gaps in your smile can be
replaced by incorporating a single crown onto the root of a dental implant placed into your jawbone. • You may have discoloured fillings and would like to improve the appearance of the tooth. • It may hold a bridge or denture firmly in place. • You may have had an accident and damaged the tooth. There are a few options you have. Some of which are; 1. Ceramic Crowns are the most natural-looking and can be translucent as your own enamel. They are the perfect choice for those with metal allergies, but people usually choose them because of how they look. 2. Ceramic-fused-to-metal-crowns combine this natural look with the strength of metal underneath, but they are not as translucent as ceramic alone. 3. Precious metal (Gold and Palladium). These crowns are very strong and hard-wearing, but are usually used at the back of the mouth, where they are not visible. Once a choice of crown has been made, the dentist will prepare the tooth to the ideal shape for the crown. This will involve removing
most of the outer surface, and leaving a strong inner ‘core’. The amount of the tooth removed will be the same thickness of the crown to be fitted. Once the tooth is shaped, the dentist will take an impression of the prepared tooth, one of the opposite jaw and possibly another to mark the way you bite together. The impressions will be given to a Dental Technician, along with any other information need to make the crown. This will ensure that the crown will be constructed to fit your mouth perfectly. The procedure of a crown placement takes at least two visits. The first, for the preparation, impression, shade taking and fitting a temporary crown. The second to fit the permanent crown. A Veneer on the other hand is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth, very much as a false fingernail fits over a nail. Sometimes a natural colour ‘composite’ material is used instead of porcelain. Veneers make teeth look natural and healthy, and because they are very thin and are held in place by a special strong bond (rather like super-glue!) very little preparation of the tooth is necessary. Veneers
can improve the colour, shape and position of teeth. A precise shade of porcelain can be chosen to give the required colour, to improve a single discoloured or stained tooth or to lighten front teeth (usually the upper ones) generally. Veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics (braces) is not suitable. If one tooth is slightly out of position, a veneer can sometimes be fitted to bring it in line with the others. Veneers should last for many years, but they can chip or break, just as your own teeth can. Your dentist will advise you how long each individual veneer should last. Small chips can be repaired or a new veneer fitted if necessary. A veneer takes at least two visits. The first to prepare the tooth, take impressions and to match the shade and the second to fit it. I recommend visiting the Dental Technician, to have the shade done for better results. Before bonding in place, your dentist will show you your veneer on your tooth to make sure you are happy with it. Bonding a veneer in place is done with a special adhesive, which holds it firmly on the tooth. This is how a thin porcelain veneer gets its strength much like a porcelain tile on your bathroom wall with adhesive. Veneers are quite often used to make teeth look better cosmetically, whilst crowns are better used for teeth which need to be strengthened – either because they have broken, have been weakened by a very large filling, or have had root canal treatment.

f there’s one thing that will stop you puckering up with your other half, it’s a nasty cold sore on your lip. They may be small and often barely noticeable to others - but to the sufferer they can seem huge, and very obvious. The reality is, however, that if sufferers were brave enough to go on their dates, their partners would probably sympathise, as the Herpes Viruses Association (HVA) estimate that by the age of 25, 60% of people will have become infected with the herpes simplex (HSV) type 1 virus that most commonly causes cold sores. HOW DO YOU CATCH THEM?
The virus is very much a kissing disease, passed on by mouth-to-mouth from someone who has a cold sore on their face. “It’s skin contact with friction, so you’re more likely to catch a cold sore off somebody if it’s a long kiss, rather than just a peck on the lips,” says Nigel Scott of the HVA. However, as the virus is fragile and dies very quickly when it’s off the skin, it’s only caught by direct skin contact. So there’s no need to worry about sharing cups or towels with sufferers. It can also be killed by water, or getting too hot or cold. Not all people infected with HSV will develop cold sores as a result, say experts. In fact, only around a quarter of carriers will ever experience symptoms. “You can catch it and never get symptoms,” says Scott. “Or there could be a trigger at any stage of your life and you get a cold sore.” WHAT ARE THE TRIGGERS?
Once you’ve caught HSV, it hides in nerve sheaths and can be reactivated by various situations, including tiredness, illness, stress, being run-down, menstruation, too much alcohol or the ultraviolet rays from sunbeds or sunlight. Some people can have recurrent outbreaks as often as once a month. Scott says: “If your mouth and lips get very sore if you do something like eat a very scratchy French loaf, if you get very run-down, or something upsets 56

KISS THOSE COLD SORES
GOODBYE AFTER 80% OF COLD SORE SUFFERERS ADMITTED THEY’VE CANCELLED DATES DUE TO OUTBREAKS, EXPERTS EXPLAIN WHY THE NASTY MOUTH SORES OCCUR AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM. BY LISA SALMON your immune system - any of these things can act as triggers. “The immune system would normally keep this virus suppressed, but if it’s really stretched with something else, sometimes it doesn’t quite manage.” HOW DOES IT FEEL?
There will be an itchy, tingly feeling on or near the lip when a cold sore is developing, and perhaps a feeling of pressure. This is the time to treat the area, as at this stage it’s possible to stop the cold sore developing, says Scott.
If left untreated, the itchy feeling develops into a small red patch, then a blister, which bursts and heals into the classic cold sore scab, normally lasting around a week. Sores tend to appear where you’ve been kissed, although they can occasionally recur anywhere on the face. In general, the virus prefers the moist skin that lines the lips, mouth and nose. TREATMENT
The HVA says the best way to avoid cold sores is to look after
yourself, and those who are prone to them should steer clear of any potential triggers. GP Dr Phil Hammond, a patron of the HVA, warns that exposure to bright sunlight, which can trigger a cold sore outbreak, is a particular risk for skiers at this time of year, and advises them to use a good sun block. “A few unlucky people seem to get frequent repeat outbreaks sometimes triggered by stress, poor diet, lack of sleep or exposure to bright sunlight,” he says. “A long-term course of antiviral tablets can deal with this.” Aciclovir, a medication used to treat a variety of viral infections including cold sores, shingles and chickenpox, is commonly prescribed to sufferers, and some aciclovir creams can be bought over the counter at pharmacies. Other cold sore treatments include using a herbal cream made with lemon balm, or a liquorice balm, which can help reduce the severity and duration of outbreaks. Medical nutritionist and former GP Dr Sarah Brewer says liquorice extracts stimulate immunity by increasing production of the antiviral substance ‘interferon’. “When applied to the lips, it suppresses the production of viral proteins needed to keep the herpes virus in its latent state, so they’re less likely to cause an eruption,” she says. “When applied to a sore, it promotes more rapid destruction of infected cells.” FIGHT THOSE COLD SORES
The Herpes Viruses Association has these suggestions for sufferers... • Start treatment as soon the characteristic tingling starts. • Apply well-wrapped ice for 90 minutes to cool the area. • Use over-the-counter creams. • Apply cold, used teabags to the sore every hour. • Use tea tree oil or geranium oil to help speed healing. • Keep the sore moist so it doesn’t crack with a dab of Vaseline. • See your doctor for antiviral tablets if you have recurrent outbreaks.

Howevverr, you can enjoy Indian head massage. As well well as the scalp, this could be adapted to include the face, palms, and soles of your o feet in the treatment as well. Reflexology would be another excellent option for you as it is only performed on the soles of your feet and can be incredibly relaxing. Naturopathic treatment might be worth pursuing too, so that any lifestyle factors that may be exaggerating the problem can be addressed. Do make sure you keep your GP informed of any complementary treatment you are thinking of having so that they can check it is safe to work alongside your medication.

HEALTH BEAUTY LONGER LOCKS Mermaids aren't known for their bobs or crops. Hair grows roughly an inch every two months, and if you're craving longer hair you need to review your maintenance. "The key to hair growth is scalp health and condition," says hair stylist Errol Douglas MBE. "It should be clean and neither too dry or oily. There are lots of treatments available to correct and regulate the scalp." Trims are still essential but Douglas advises asking your stylist for a 'dusting' instead of a trim or cut. He explains: "It's literally a method where just the tiniest particles are removed from the ends. Foods rich in amino acids help the production of keratin, hair's natural protein, which will assist in it growing fuller and stronger." Hydrate the hair regularly to avoid breakage and use heat protectants every time styling tools are used. Length can be ageing as you get older but it's often the change in texture that's the giveaway. "If my clients are reluctant to let go of length, I advise face-framing layers that soften the face and break up the coarser texture of hair as we grow older," Douglas suggests.
TRIED & TESTED Create instant beachy hair texture with a salt spray. Our testers spritz with three products: TRESemme Texture Style Tousled Wave Spray, £5.50 The spray action felt untargeted and not a lot seemed to reach my hair. I liked the boosted beach texture, but my ends felt slightly sticky afterwards. 2/5
label.m Sea Salt Spray, £12.95 (labelm.com/uk) My hair felt bouncier and beachier immediately after a spritz of this and I loved the natural texture that didn't look or feel like I had used any product. Also comes in a handy travel-size to recreate the effect on an actual beach. 5/5 Catwalk by TIGI Session Series Salt Spray, £14.25 (www.tigihaircare.com) I loved the perfumed smell of this product. The spray was super-light and non-sticky in texture and resulted in instant loose waves after scrunching loosely with fingers. 4/5
TEXTURE TONICS Look to beach, salt or texturising sprays to help you achieve beachy waves in an instant. They may have different names but they all do the same hair-boosting job as though you've been tumbling in waves. "These sprays give a matte, earthy texture to the hair," explains Gill Berry, of Structure hair. "It's excellent on short, choppy styles, but also long, wavy and curly hair as it gives excellent volume, while adding strength and definition." The more spray you use, the more the hold factor increases. For a lighter finish, spray onto your hands and scrunch the product into your hair. For greater hold and texture, spray directly onto the hair. If your hair is uber-straight, promote a wavier look with curling tongs. Spritz a beach spray onto clean, damp hair and rough dry, then use a curling wand to wave random sections from the mid-lengths to the ends. Berry says: "You're not after a neat finish, more of a messy, slightly dishevelled look." BRAIDY BUNCH Look to plaits for practical beach style. They scrape your hair off the face in the heat and unravel to reveal beachy kinks once they're undone. Go for braids if you also want to hide a multitude of hair sins, like greasy roots or frizziness once you've taken a dip. Norris Ogario, founder of Ogario London salon, says: "Braids and pretty plaits always make an appearance at this time of year but this season there's a shift towards multiple braids. "Very cute and easy to do, simply plait your hair when wet and leave until nearly dry. At this stage, loosen your locks to reveal soft casual waves and add in some plaits around the side of the face." To avoid looking too neat and 'done', mess up the plaits a little to give them a fluffy feel, leaving some of them looser than others. The tighter the plait, the tighter the wave. If you prefer a relaxed look, stick to one or two loose plaits.

Light up your home B Lighting can make a huge difference to a room, affecting how we use a space and whether it feels roomy or cosy. Here’s how to get it right…
efore installing or updating lights, think about how you use each room during the day. A lounge may double-up as an office, the children might need to do their homework on the dining table in the evening or you might use the guest bedroom as a hobby space at night. Multi-functional rooms need to offer ambient as well as task lighting, while open plan living areas may even use pools of light as ‘zones’ in the absence of walls. A flexible scheme where the focus and light levels can be adjusted throughout the day is key - dimmers are ideal as they create mood and allow the room to work from day to night.
Kitchen lighting While a central pendant will provide general lighting, a kitchen requires good task lighting in work areas, especially where you’ll be cooking. Task lighting should be positioned to the side or behind where you’re working – not in front. Many modern kitchen cabinets and cooker hoods come with built-in lights but adding them to existing ones is relatively easy and needn’t be expensive. Mini fluorescent lights can be picked up at most DIY stores (an eight-watt bulb in warm white should work well) and look great when fitted underneath wall units. If you have a central pendant over a dining table, choose one with a flexible cord, which can be pulled down for task lighting when required. To avoid re-wiring, consider fitting a track system with directional lights to highlight the work surface and the sink. While they might take more work to install, ceiling downlights can be placed where needed and because they recessed won’t get covered in grease and dirt. Bathroom lighting In a bathroom, task lighting is important where you need to see clearly, but think about adding feature lighting to create atmosphere. Consider adding recessed LED 1w Lucca spotlights into alcoves or back-lighting an opaque bath panel. Light behind the bath with waterproof LED 1w Lucca Exterior uplights or use an LED Contour strip under a basin so that it appears to float or use it to backlight shelves. Just take care that any fittings used are completely encased and never be tempted to use a conventional light fitting that’s not intended for bathroom use. With a little imagination, the right lighting really can transform every room in the house. Living room lighting Background or ambient lighting plays the part of daylight and is most 62
J U LY 2 0 1 3
often provided by a central pendant light – but if used alone, can create a very flat effect. Think about layering the light. One ceiling light will cast shadows, whereas having lamps dotted around will highlight all areas and make the room more welcoming.” How to make a hallway warm. The lounge is where we’re most likely to use accent lighting - to show off an artwork, ornaments, or even a plant. Think carefully when positioning lights - don’t place downlighters at either end of a sofa if you may change the room layout. Similarly, wall lights are best positioned either side of a fixed feature, like a fireplace. A standing lamp can look good behind the sofa or next to an armchair. For reading, the light should be placed to one side, behind and above the chair and take a 60 watt bulb at least – remembering that a 60-year-old requires 15 times more light for reading than a teenager. Watching TV in total darkness can cause eye strain, so place a light behind or beside the television, avoiding anything too bright which could cause glare on the screen. To make a room appear larger, light all four corners with spotlights or table lamps, in addition to a main pendant light. Wall washers, which flood light on to the wall and ceiling, will make the room seem taller. To make a room feel longer place lights at one end, to attract the eye along it.”
Hallway Halls are often dark and lighting can be used to make a warm and welcoming entrance, as well as ensuring safety on the stairs. Create drama by over-scaling a decorative pendant and dimming this for mood, used in conjunction with Polespring LED downlights. Try lighting the stairs themselves using recessed spotlights and ensure the main overhead light is at the top of the stairs rather than the bottom to reduce the risk of accidents. Bedroom lighting Most people like bedrooms to be bright in the morning and atmospheric in the evening. Use a High CRI Contour Strip to uplight above a wardrobe for a fresh bright effect that can be dimmed in the evening or use a run of Polespring LEDs to light the front of wardrobes or highlight the headboard. Don’t forget to have downlights on a separate control so you can turn them off from bed. Bedside table or wall lights are ideal for reading – choose shades that are white on the inside and a warm colour outside, and fit with a clear bulb to provide a warm glow.

SUMMER
LIVING S
ummer-time and the living is easy – lyrics made famous by George Gershwin many years ago and with Summer finally here we should all feel a sense of relaxation and easy living - easy to achieve if you actually live by the sea, but also achievable if you don’t! It IS possible to have a little bit of summer all year round! We all have rooms which can potentially be transformed into tranquil, peaceful living spaces by using light and colour as natural ingredients with nautical blues and whites creating comfortable sophisticated luxury. Coastal retreats, summer houses and conservatories all beg for their doors to be pushed open once the sun shines and nothing achieves a fresh modern feel in a clean uncluttered space better than Lloyd Loom furniture. The Lloyd Loom of Spalding range works perfectly in fresh, light filled interiors which blend into outdoor areas - the company recently supplied a large quantity of furniture to the South Sands hotel in Devon. The elegant yet relaxed style of Lloyd Loom perfectly reflects the hotel’s signature “comfortable luxury”, and blends effortlessly with the refined sophistication of South Sands’ beachside terrace and restaurant. At St Giles Furniture we have a wide range of Lloyd Loom of Spalding furniture on display. This individual, handmade furniture, crafted in Spalding works well in so many areas of the home and is easy to clean, move and store. More importantly the furniture is enduring and just perfect for relaxing on open sea-facing terraces, river launches or the back garden! As a bespoke furniture manufacturer ourselves we really appreciate the time and effort that goes into making Lloyd Loom with skilled craftsmen employing traditional methods of working, just as we do in our own workshop in Lincolnshire. We make many beautiful bespoke tables using woods such as Oak and Walnut, and often recommend Lloyd Loom chairs to accompany this furniture. Lloyd Loom adds colour and texture to what can often be flat, plain surfaces. Our workshop also uses the Farrow and Ball paint range which ties in beautifully with Lloyd Loom of Spalding who also offer their products in these shades along with many beautiful standard colours. With Summer finally here it’s a great time to consider home improvements. If you have been thinking about a new kitchen, take a look above. This image is a great example of a recent design we did for a client. Working together we were able to create a beautiful light airy kitchen space incorporating one of our lovely Oak tables. Lloyd Loom of Spalding dining chairs were added for real impact with colours bravely chosen by our client! The room looks absolutely 64

stunning and showcases perfectly what we do best at St Giles Furniture! Why fitting double glazing to larger than average homes is a no brainer
W
ith energy prices at an all-time high and set to constantly rise ever higher, even one bed flat owners in the UK will benefit from having “A” rated energy efficient windows installed, especially when done in conjunction with draught proof, thermally efficient doors. Consequently the larger the property, the greater the energy savings are going to be by having double glazing fitted, given it costs exponentially more to heat a premises the larger it gets Many UK homes were fitted with “first generation” double glazing over 20 years ago, which whilst revolutionary then, is now (in today’s terms) dreadfully old hat and not very energy efficient. Many home owners have improved their older larger properties by having cavity wall insulation and loft insulation fitted, but have not yet fitted modern thermally broken double glazing. There is a range of genuinely “A” rated fenestration products 72
J U LY 2 0 1 3
available, be they made using aluminium, UPVC or wooden frames. It is difficult to explain how much more energy efficient these energy saving products are when compared to single glazed windows and even the first generations of double glazing. For example, many UK homes were fitted years ago with silver anodised aluminium double glazing within hardwood frames, with some home owners subsequently reporting occasional condensation on the inside frames on cold winter mornings. This condensation can be caused by various factors, firstly often insufficient ventilation within a room and secondly by the fact the product does not have a “thermal break”. Nowadays most high quality aluminium windows have a polyamide thermal break between the inner and outer frames which prevents the external cold surface of the outer window pane meeting the warm surface of the inner window pane, hence why today you can purchase “A” rated thermally broken aluminium double glazing as well as “A” rated UPVC double glazing.

&
house garden
Whatever material double glazing frames are made of, the other crucial element of an energy efficient double glazing system is the sealed unit. Most energy saving windows need a sealed unit with a centre-pane U-Value (a measure of thermal efficiency) of about 1.2 W/m2K to enable it to achieve an overall energy rating of “A” when combined with the gaskets and window frames. Consequently the glass sealed unit specification is critical to the overall energy performance of double glazed windows. In between the two panes of glass (usually each 4mm thick) is an air gap of 16mm to 20mm. These two panes are separated by a “Warm-Edge” spacer bar to prevent thermal transference. This vacuum gap is then usually filled with 90% Argon or Krypton which basically helps retain warmth generated by the property’s heating system on cold winter days and helps keep out excess heat on hot summer days. For example, double glazing firms and Pilkington EnergiKare partners like independent manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Window Company of High Wycombe use a high specification of glass as standard in their sealed units for their replacement windows. On the external pane they use Pilkington’s OptiWhite E, a very clear low iron glass with no “green” colouring, which allows more light and heat into a room (Solar Gain). This clear glass reduces the amount of artificial light required, thereby saving on electricity bills. On the internal pane they use Pilkington’s high performance low emissivity softcoat “K” glass, a product which has a special “softcoat” coating on the internal side of the inside pane, which helps retains heat that has been generated by the central heating system or by solar gain, or both! Pilkington K softcoat glass has a highly neutral appearance with optimal solar heat gain, thermal insulation and light transmission to
provide the highest Window Energy Rating (WER) performance. The WER scheme is the UK Government backed method of assessing and ranking the energy efficiency of a complete window. Taking into account its U-Value, solar gain and air infiltration, the scheme allows straight forward comparison of the energy efficiency of different windows, with an “A” rating being the best and “C” rating being the minimum replacement windows must achieve. This new minimum standard of energy efficiency came in on 1st October 2010 when revised Building Regulations make it a requirement that any property owner replacing one or more windows must comply with. The reality is that “C” rated windows are exceptionally thermally efficient when compared to first generation double glazing and single glazed windows, and provide a level of thermal efficiency that most UK house holders would give their right arm for, given the amount of energy they will save the property owners. Those with larger homes that have thermally inefficient windows and doors who want to future proof their homes against rising energy bills therefore need to replace their old draughty windows with modern energy rated double glazing. Given the additional costs of heating larger homes fitting technologically advanced replacement double glazing is an absolute no brainer.

ROAST CHICKEN CAESAR SALAD WITH QUAILS' EGGS,
SALAD DAYS ARE
HERE TO STAY
A
lmost 500 million bags of leafy salad were snapped up in the UK last year. And with more than 60 varieties of the green stu readily available, now is the perfect time to refresh your salad repertoire, says Keeley Bolger. Juicy burgers and succulent chicken drumsticks are often the main attraction at summer barbecues - and who can blame us for shunning the salads when the scent of mouth-watering grilled meat ďŹ lls the air? But don't let your nose do your bidding. Done properly, summer salads can be just as exciting as a sizzling quarter-pounder. And what's more, they're becoming easier and easier to create at home. Back in 1985, Marks & Spencer welcomed UK customers to the convenient world of pre-packaged salads. Since then, other shops have followed suit, with a whopping
466,938,000 bags of salads sold in supermarkets during 2012, according to the British Leafy Salads Association (BLSA). One person who's keen to encourage us to put salad in the spotlight is Harry Eastwood, who appeared on Channel 4's Cook Yourself Thin. She's so enthusiastic about leaves, she's devoted an entire book to them. "I've been eating a salad a day for years. So long in fact that I can't remember when it started!" laughs Eastwood. "Salads are healthy and easy, I honestly just love eating colourful food. I feel good if I eat food that I know is fresh, seasonal, delicious and full of nutrients." But with more than 60 varieties of homegrown leaves now widely available to make a meal within minutes, now is the ideal time to start making the most out of our salads. Here are three of Eastwood's recipes to get you started... J U LY 2 0 1 3 8 1

GOAT'S CHEESE AND HONEY PARCELS WITH GREEN BEANS (Serves 6, making 18 parcels in total) 400g fine green beans, topped and tailed 9 sheets filo pastry (two packs of ready-made pastry should be ample) 4tbsp vegetable oil 350g mild goat's cheese (such as goat log), cut into 18 round slices 18 x 1/2tsp set honey (preferably floral honey) 2tbsp thyme leaves, torn from the stem 200g bacon lardons, chopped into very small dice (or 120g of lightly toasted walnuts for vegetarians) 4 large handfuls mixed baby leaf lettuce or oak leaf lettuce washed and dried 1 shallot (preferably a banana shallot), finely diced For the dressing: 1tbsp red wine vinegar 1tbsp walnut oil 1tsp Dijon mustard Blanch the green beans in boiling water and once the water boils again, drain and rinse them in very cold water until they are cold to the touch. They should be a little crunchy. Set aside. To make the parcels, cut the filo sheets in half lengthways so you have 18 sheets of pastry, then brush a little of the oil over each sheet of filo on both sides. Next, place a cheese round somewhere in the middle of each sheet and top it with half a teaspoon of honey and a pinch of thyme. Fold the sheet up like a present, tucking in the ends as you go so you don't wind up with any 'open ends'. Don't worry that it's not glued tightly shut at this point, as the melted cheese and honey will seal it later. Once you've made up all the parcels, set them aside. Fry the lardons in a large, dry frying pan. Once golden and cooked, remove them from the pan with a slotted spoon and drip-dry them on kitchen paper. Without tipping the excess fat out of the pan, fry the filo cheese parcels in the lardon pan for four minutes on each side, or until they turn golden. Blend the dressing ingredients together in a clean jam jar and give a good shake. Assemble the salad leaves, shallot, lardons and beans in a large mixing bowl and toss with the dressing. Taste and season before adding the hot parcels and serving. SUMMER RATATOUILLE WITH ANCHOVIES AND LEMON (Serves 4) 1 large aubergine, cut into small dice 2 medium courgettes, topped, tailed and cut into very small dice 4tbsp olive oil 1 large (preferably Spanish) onion, peeled and cut into fine dice 1 medium yellow pepper, cored and chopped into small cubes 1 medium orange pepper, cored and chopped into small cubes 2 cloves garlic, crushed to a paste 3 anchovies, very finely chopped (you could substitute these for 82

pine nuts or feta) 10 medium, ripe tomatoes on the vine Freshly squeezed juice of 1/2 lemon A handful basil leaves, torn from the stem Heat a large frying pan until very hot. Toss the aubergine and courgette cubes in the olive oil until evenly coated. Add them to the hot frying pan and cook over a high heat for five minutes, until the edges have turned a golden colour. You may find that you need to do this stage in two batches. Tip the hot vegetables into a large bowl with the diced onion, prepared peppers, garlic and anchovies. Season generously with salt and pepper, then cover with cling film. Set aside for 10 minutes. In the meantime, chop the tomatoes in half and scoop out the seeds and centre with the help of a spoon. Finely chop the flesh, then add to the bowl with the rest of the ingredients. Finally, squeeze the lemon juice over the salad. Set aside (wrapped in cling film) for an hour in the ambient temperature of your kitchen, to let the flavours mingle and develop. Scatter the basil leaves over just before serving and adjust the seasoning one last time. Serve with crusty bread. ROAST CHICKEN CAESAR SALAD WITH QUAILS' EGGS (Serves 6) 50g butter 2 cloves garlic, minced 1tbsp thyme leaves Freshly cracked black pepper

1 large (2.5kg) free-range chicken (use avocado for a meat-free version) 12 quails' eggs (if you can't find quails' eggs, try using 6 free-range eggs) 1 ciabatta roll, cut into slices 1cm wide, brushed with 2tbsp olive oil A pinch of celery salt 4 Little Gem lettuces, leaves torn from the heart and washed 120g pitted black olives 3 celery stalks, washed and finely chopped 30g Parmesan, shaved into thin strips Light Caesar dressing: (Makes 400ml) 120g mayonnaise 8 drained and finely chopped anchovies, 4 cloves garlic, minced 120ml freshly squeezed lemon juice 60g plain full-fat yoghurt 4tsp Dijon mustard 4tbsp olive oil 2tsp Worcestershire Sauce A pinch of celery salt Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/gas mark 5. Beat the butter with a wooden spoon and add the garlic and thyme. It's ready when the mixture looks like a paste. Season well with pepper. Rub the paste under the skin of the chicken, concentrating on

the breast section and the top of the thighs. Place the prepared chicken in the middle of the hot oven and cook for one hour, basting occasionally. Cook the quails' eggs in boiling water for two minutes. Once cooked, run them under cold water until they are cold to the touch. Drain them, then peel. There is a knack to peeling quails' eggs: roll them on a board first and you'll find that the shell comes off easier (and sometimes in one long, satisfying strip). Adjust your cooking time accordingly if you're using free-range eggs. Once the chicken has had 40 minutes' cooking, pop the ciabatta on an oven tray and into the hot oven for the final 20 minutes of cooking. Once the chicken is cooked, let it rest for 10 minutes. Cut all the meat from the carcass and toss it in the cooking juices. Season with celery salt. To make the dressing, put the mayonnaise, anchovies, garlic and lemon juice in a clean jar and shake until loose and combined. Add the yoghurt, Dijon mustard, olive oil, Worcestershire sauce and a pinch celery of salt and shake again. Keeps for three to five days in a jar in the fridge. Dress the prepared lettuce leaves with half the dressing. Next, add the prepared eggs, olives, celery and ciabatta to the lettuce. Add the Parmesan and a good crunch of black pepper. Drizzle the remaining dressing over before serving. A Salad For All Seasons by Harry Eastwood is published by Bantam Press, priced £20. Available now ■

S
andbanks Yacht Co. is fast becoming the most anticipated marine lifestyle development of its kind on the South Coast. Luxury residential properties will sit alongside bespoke dining, boating and fitness amenities, resulting in this development having huge appeal to both property hunters and local residents alike. Nine architect designed coastal properties form the centrepiece of the development, which will also encompass a Restaurant, Café, Gym, Boatyard and 155 swinging moorings. Developer, Roundset Westingly explains the vision for the development. “The brief for the scheme was to create nine contemporary coastal homes, taking inspiration from the surroundings, offering high end specification, modern contemporary design and incorporating lifestyle amenities to compliment them. Gemma Martin, interior designer and owner of GM Designs explains the interior design concept, “The design ethos behind this project was to be sympathetic to the environment, serene and calm, without drawing away from the show stopping view. The space is light, airy and bright so that when the sun is shining, the design compliments the view and yet when the sea is rough and stormy, you feel warm and sheltered. It was really important to show a lifestyle rather than a show home”. The development is not only about luxury living, it also boasts a restaurant, café with decked sun terrace, members’ lounge, state of the art gym offering personal training expertise, a therapy room and a dry berth boatyard with 155 deep and shallow swinging moorings. Sandbanks Yacht Co. will be offering membership packages, which

will include gym membership and discounts at the restaurant and café. “The focus of the club will be on family and getting out on the water” says Ellie Taylor, Membership Manager, “we offer plenty of opportunities for people to relax at SYC and unwind and look forward to inviting boaters and non-boaters alike. Whether your idea of enjoyment is getting out on the water by boat, kayak or paddleboard or enjoying a relaxing drink and taking in the view, Sandbanks Yacht Co has something to offer everyone. In the coming months members will be invited to a range of activities and events, and we look forward to making the club an all year round destination.” Jem Mills, Boatyard Manager, points out that SYC is not only for the experienced boater. “Don’t be afraid to come and ask for help, whether it be assisting you in buying the right boat, gaining more confidence with the boat you own or broadening your knowledge on the fabulous sailing waters in the area. Sometimes joining a new yacht club can be intimidating, but we pride ourselves on being friendly, helpful and professional.” Nigel Still, from Stephen Noble, sole agent for SYC says “This development is hugely exciting for Sandbanks. Never before has there been a development of this magnitude offering such a superb facility to the local community. It is a truly unique development combining residential with leisure facilities, all in one stunning location.” He goes on to say “A five year club membership and
access to an annual swinging mooring is being included in the property sale, which makes it an attractive option for both home owners and second home owners alike. We can also offer bespoke concierge services, arranging everything from housekeeping, laundry and key holding to private dining, airport pick ups and personal assistant services.” The first waterfront show home, Newport House is open for viewings every weekend from 11-4pm and weekdays by appointment. The shore side show home, No.2 The Peninsula will also be available for viewings from Saturday 6th July.
