Henley Royal Regatta 2012 WEDNESDAY 27TH JUNE - SUNDAY 1ST JULY The Henley Royal Regatta is one of the premier sporting and social occasions in the British calendar. With its 160 year history, it is undoubtedly the best known regatta in the world and it holds a unique place in the respect and affection of all oarsmen - both active and retired. Founded in 1839, it is famous both as a great sporting occasion and as a social event. People come from all over the world to attend, either as competitors or as spectators. Winning an event at Henley has always been considered one of the greatest achievements of a rower’s career, even amongst those who have become world champions; and a rowing life is not complete if it does not include competing at Henley. Unlike multi-lane international regattas, Henley still operates a knock-out draw with only two boats racing in each heat. This entails the organisation of up to 90 races on some of the five days. The length of the Course is 1 mile 550 yards. It takes approximately seven minutes to cover, so there are often two races at once on the Course for much of the day. The number of races is, of course, reduced on each successive day, leaving only the Finals to be rowed on the last day. The first rounds of the Thames, Temple, Princess Elizabeth, Wyfold, Britannia, Prince Albert and Fawley Challenge Cups will begin racing on Wednesday 27th June 2012. The racing timetable for the Wednesday will be posted on the Regatta website on the afternoon of Sunday 24th June. The first rounds of all other events will begin racing on Thursday 28th or Friday 29th June. There are 20 events in total: 6 classes of race for Eights, 5 for Fours (3 coxless and 2 coxed), 5 for Quadruple Sculls, and races for Coxless Pairs and Double Sculls. In addition there are single sculling races for both men and women. A record number of 133 overseas crews have entered this year’s event, easily breaking the previous record of 126 overseas crews set in the 150th Anniversary year back in 1989. Twenty one overseas nations are represented, the second

highest number ever. There are 499 crews entered in total. THE STEWARDS’ ENCLOSURE
Only open to members and their guests. There are now 6,500 Members and the waiting list is nearly 1,000 - this means that it could take up to 10 years before an applicant is likely to be elected to membership. Please contact Henley Royal Regatta for a membership application form or for further information on the application process. Those attending the Regatta in the Stewards’ Enclosure must dress in accordance with long-established tradition. Gentlemen are required to wear lounge suits, or jackets or blazers with flannels, and a tie or cravat. Ladies are required to wear dresses or skirts with a hemline below the knee and will not be admitted wearing divided skirts, culottes or trousers of any kind. Similarly, no one will be admitted to the Stewards’ Enclosure wearing shorts or jeans. Whilst not a requirement, it is customary for ladies to wear hats. Members are particularly asked to bring the dress code to the attention of their Guests, to ensure that the standards are maintained and to avoid the possibility of embarrassment of a Guest being refused admission. Children under ten years of age are not admitted. The Regatta Enclosure This situated just downstream from the Stewards’ Enclosure and is open to the general public, competitors and supporters. The atmosphere is less formal than the Stewards’ Enclosure as there is no dress code, although many who attend do enter into the spirit of the Regatta, wearing club blazers and other rowing apparel. Children of all ages are welcome and admission is free to under 14s when accompanied by an adult who has purchased a Regatta Enclosure badge. To view the racing, the Regatta Enclosure offers seating alongside the river and in an open grandstand. There is also

an excellent covered restaurant, an outside dining area and a bar. The River Lounge by “rhubarb” Henley This most quintessential and unique of English institutions is a truly spectacular occasion and the perfect setting for entertaining. Situated opposite the world famous Temple Island, only yards from the racing action itself, The River Lounge by “rhubarb” Henley has the perfect vantage from which to take in this remarkable event. This exclusive venue has reinvented the hospitality experience from a traditional and conservative environment into a fresh and contemporary space. The enclosure continues to grow in popularity each year and regularly receives critical acclaim. Guests enter the stunning marquee and start the day with a delicious champagne and canapé breakfast. Afterwards they lounge in the private and beautifully sculptured gardens and can enjoy the very best in gourmet cuisine. Guests enjoy a complimentary bar throughout the day, live acoustic music, head and neck massages, a private river cruise and much more. Plus all of this is delivered with a level of personal friendly service synonymous with only the most elite of occasions. The River Lounge is an unrivalled experience, delivering the very best in hospitality and entertainment. They also offer hospitality outside of the Regatta for weddings or dinner parties on the river, as they are now partnered with Hobbs of Henley, who operate three stylish river boats along the Thames. Car parking spaces are available on the Regatta site and it is advisable to purchase daily parking labels in advance. Trains run frequently to Henley from London Paddington and a special timetable is implemented by First Great Western for the duration of the Regatta. The Garden Players
es !, The Garden Players are back in Beaconsfield, following their successful performances of A Midsummer Night’s Dream last year, with an exciting new production of Twelfth Night in June 2012, again using the facilities of the lovely garden at Storrington in Ledborough Wood, Beaconsfield. Shipwrecked off the coast of Illyria and believing her twin brother Sebastian to be dead, the destitute Viola dresses as a boy for self protection and joins the court of the lovesick Duke Orsino. Sent to court Lady Olivia on Orsino’s behalf, she finds herself at the apex of a love triangle: 'Whoe'er I woo, myself would be his wife.' The hilarious antics of Sir Toby Belch & Sir Andrew Aguecheek and the humiliation of Olivia's servant Malvolio are key additional elements of Shakespeare's much loved comedy of mistaken identity and sweeping romance. Director, Archie Wilson, a well known and respected local director and actor, has selected a strong cast of experienced local performers, many of whom were in the previous productions. The growing popularity and success of the The Garden Players has attracted a number of new, young cast members to Twelfth Night, among whom are :Lauren Brady a young, beautifully spoken trainee Actuary, fills the dual role of Viola and Cesario, one of the surviving twins, at the same time falling in love with her mentor Duke Orsino. Jan Edwards who will be playing Maria, and who has acted in and seen a lot Shakespeare, is enjoying rehearsing with her new friends enormously. “I love Twelfth Night” says Jan “and can’t resist any opportunity to become involved - it is interesting, beautiful and complicated”. Hugo Bostock plays the part of sea captain Antonio, who rescues Viola’s twin brother Sebastian and seems to have dark longings for him.

JUNE2012
The Garden Players are again being supported by Deloitte as sponsor and thanks to their continued invaluable contribution, things are off to a good start. The Charity itself is enthusiastically involved in the publicity for the show. Around 200 local businesses have been approached and invited either to donate to the charity or contribute a prize for the raffle. This will be the group’s fourth production and since their inaugural 2009 production of Much Ado About Nothing, they have raised in excess of £28,000 for their charities from the three productions so far in Beaconsfield and Bath, all of which sold out several weeks prior to opening night. The group’s aims are to stage a high quality production while maximising their charitable donations. This year’s performances will again be in aid of the Child Bereavement Charity http://www.childbereavement.org.uk/, a national charity based in Saunderton, Bucks which supports children and parents when there is a bereavement in their family. Twelfth Night is one of the most popular of Shakespeare’s plays, and there will be four performances on the evenings of 27th, 28th, 29th and 30th June 2012 in the garden of Storrington, 13 Ledborough Wood, Beaconsfield HP9 2DJ. Tickets are £15 ( £12 concession for the Wednesday performance ) which includes a programme and a glass of wine. The box office is doing brisk business and our box office manager Judith Timewell can be contacted on 01628 522854. We are looking forward once again to seeing and sharing a glass of wine with many friends both old and new on a balmy summer's evening. It’s all happening in Chalfont St Giles!
W
ith its hugely successful Jubilee Day celebration safely in the bag, the year’s biggest event looms in Chalfont St. Giles! Yes, it’s coming up to Show time once again and while all the Mums, Dads and kids are planting vegetables and scanning recipes for their competition entries, the Superheroes are on their way! It will all be happening on Saturday, September 8th – a week later this year than the traditional St Giles’ Day— when the village will once again host the Chalfont St Giles Show! The best, the biggest and the brightest day out for fifty miles in any direction, this perennial favourite event on the local calendar—now over 100 years old—will again take place on Stone & Silsden Meadows in the heart of this beautiful Chilterns village. Offering an amazing day out for all the family packed with top-class entertainment and maximum fun, it’s a steal at only £5 per adult (£3 in advance), Juniors (5-17), Senior Citizens £2 (in advance and on
18
JUNE2012
Show Day) and under 5’s free, with FREE PARKING in Mill Lane thrown in, we’re willing to bet no other event in the county—maybe even the country—can offer such a fantastic line up at such a reasonable price! And what a terrific roster of Superheroes will be on Show! Topping the bill this year are The Royal Signals White Helmets, the world-famous motorcycle display team who will be performing white-knuckle car leaps, high speed cross-overs and their trademark Fire Jump in which the whole team storms through a huge and seemingly impassable firestorm – all done at top speed with amazing control and unerring precision! Appearing alongside the White Helmets will be the nationally-acclaimed Sheep Show, a light-hearted look at the sheep and shearful world of wool. Directed by New Zealand high country shepherd-turned-showman Stuart Barnes, the nine stars of the show make sheep’s eyes at you
as one of them is shorn, and the Dancing Sheep sheepishly dance their way through the Sheep Show Hustle. As if that weren’t amazing enough, the big finale features the unmissable Sheep Racing, during which the stars of the show will race over a furlong. Stuart will give a brief introduction to each sheep’s current form and, of course, no bets are Baaa…d! For an adrenaline rush of sensational proportions come and experience the OMG thrills of Europe’s first Mobile Zip Line! And Keep your eyes peeled too for exciting new talent in the form of alternative magician Dee Riley, hailed by one local newspaper as ‘A Future Star To Be’, and who will be enthralling everyone with his Table Magic, Low Wire artiste Bernie Bennett, legendary Balloon Sculptor Billy Bubbles and Peter Leadbeater, the brilliant Chainsaw Carver and show favourites The Falconry Centre and their beautiful birds of prey and Premier Rides, back by

AMERSHAM
MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA in aid of brain tumour charity A mersham A Cappella and Chalfont Concert Wind Band will perform for no fee at St Michael’s Church, Amersham on Saturday, 30 June, at 8pm to raise funds for the charity. Tickets cost £9 per person and include a glass of wine or juice. The concert is organised by the Chiltern Fundraisers, an official fundraising umbrella group of Brain Tumour UK. The small committee and several volunteers, many of whom have a personal connection with brain tumours, raised £10,000 for the charity last year. Committee member Kiki Connor said: ”We are hoping to attract music lovers of all ages to this special performance, combining two of the best musical groups in our area. We are very grateful to the groups for performing free, enabling us to raise money for a cause close to our hearts.” Kiki is a personal friend of Jenny Baker OBE, Brain Tumour UK Chief Executive, who lost her eldest son Stephen to the condition in 2004. “Having witnessed what Jenny and her family went through and how Jenny put her own grief to one side to offer support to other families coping with the devastating consequences of the disease, inspires me to raise funds for Brain Tumour UK,” she said. Despite 40 people being diagnosed every day in the UK with a primary brain tumour, only 2% of all cancer research funding in the UK goes to brain tumour research, she said. “In our own small way we are hoping to help Brain Tumour UK raise awareness and make a difference to the lives of people affected by the condition,” said Kiki. Amersham A Capella (http://www.amershamacappella.com/) is a highly successful ladies chorus with a long history of excellence. Helen Lappert, Musical Director of the chorus since 2005, said: “We have over 50 members from all walks of life, diverse careers and backgrounds – but united in an enjoyment of music making. Our wide repertoire extends from traditional barbershop style songs, classic and contemporary ballads and show-stoppers through to

up-beat jazzy and popular numbers.” In 2010 the choir won the Good Housekeeping Choir of the Year and the Gold Medal at the LABBS National Convention 2010. “Our main aim is to make beautiful harmonious music and most importantly, to have great fun!” said Helen. The Chalfont Concert Wind Band (http://www.chalfontwindband .co.uk/index.html) is a community band aimed at encouraging the interest of wind band (wind and percussion instruments) musicians of any age. Derek Wilson became President and Conductor Emeritus in 2004. He was awarded an MBE in 2007 for Services to Music and the Community. Dwight Pile-Gray is the Director of Music. “We pride ourselves on being a community band and we are always willing to support local (and national) charities,” said band secretary Mary Cadman. A TOUCH OF FROST IN SEPTEMBER
O
n September 15th Beaconsfield is commemorating the centenary of the arrival of America's most famous poet, Robert Frost. In September 1912 he came to Beaconsfield with his wife and four young children, and rented a cottage at number 26 Reynolds Road. The Bungalow, as it was called, no longer exists but a plaque on the brick wall now marks the spot where it stood. Frost was living here when he made his literary breakthrough with the publication, in London, of his first two volumes of poetry. This was before he was recognized as a poet in America. To commemorate the centenary there will be two performances at the Fitzwilliams Centre by Linda Hart and Gabriel Woolf of 'The English Years of Robert Frost'. Linda narrates the outlines of Frost's time over here, while Gabriel reads the poems and letters written by Frost that help to bring the story vividly
to life. Linda is an American who has lived in England for many years, and written and lectured on Robert Frost both here and in the States. Gabriel is a well-known and admired actor, literary performer and frequent reader on Radio 4. Together they will describe how Frost found his cottage in Beaconsfield, how he found a publisher in London, and how he befriended many writers such as W.B. Yeats, Edward Thomas and Rupert Brooke. This centenary event is being generously sponsored by The Frost Partnership. Indeed a special link exists as it was Alfred Cardain Frost, founder of the original business A. C. Frost Estate Agents, who rented the Bungalow to the Frost family. They were not related but became friends as
Local residents Jean Jackson, left and Kari Dorme, friends and fellow enthusiasts about Frost’s poetry, were instrumental in raising awareness of the poet in 2001 and putting the plaque in place. 24

they both had children the same age. Frost loved walking in the Chilterns. While living in Beaconsfield he wrote some of his most famous poems, including Mending Wall, Home Burial and After Apple Picking. One of Frost’s poems, The Road Not Taken, is regularly voted onto America's list of top ten poems. The family moved to Gloucestershire in 1914, and subsequently back to the US after the outbreak of the First World War. But Frost visited Beaconsfield when he came to England in 1957 to receive an
honorary degree from Oxford University. By the time of his death in 1963 he was read and admired around the world. Kari Dorme, retired Branch and Area Librarian for Beaconsfield, is an active Beaconsfield Society committee member and organiser of the event. Tickets for the two performances at The Fitzwilliams Centre, Beaconsfield HP9 2JW, will be on sale at The Frost Partnership Beaconsfield HP9 1NN and Beaconsfield Library HP9 2NJ For further information visit The Beaconsfield Society website: www.beaconsfieldsociety.org.uk and follow them on facebook.com/BeaconsfieldSociety.

JAMES BEIM
AUDI ROARS INTO THE POLO ARENA WITH ITS SPONSORSHIP OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY FORMAT, CREATING A MEMORABLE POLO DAY FOR BOTH PLAYER AND SPECTATOR
T
he biggest spectator polo day in the world is held at Guards Polo Club in the heart of the Royal Park at Windsor. From this year, this historic event will be sponsored by Audi, the leading luxury carmaker. This company is no stranger to polo though, as it has been the sponsor of the England polo team for several years. This makes it the perfect partner for the leading showcase event for the England Polo Team – the Coronation Cup on the Audi International Polo Day. Last year, the sport’s governing body, the Hurlingham Polo Association, in conjunction with Guards Polo Club, celebrated the centenary of the Coronation Cup, which has been played at this most famous of polo clubs for 40 of those past 100 years. Even today, the Coronation Cup is viewed by English polo players, and indeed some of the most famous international names in the sport, as
26

JUNE2012
the most coveted event to play for during the English polo season. The England team manager Andrew Hine, who has also captained the England team on this day many times too, believes International Day has a flavour that cannot be matched anywhere else in the world. “You can play in the Argentine Open in Palermo, Buenos Aires, which for many is the Mecca of the sport, with the noise and 5,000 people on top of you; but when you play at Guards Polo Club in The Coronation Cup, and you hear the roar of some 25,000 people, there is nothing like it anywhere in the world. No event can claim those sorts of numbers, and when you get a great, close match, and the crowd in those stands gets behind you, the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. It is the biggest game in the world. We love that as players. There’s no greater feeling.” The England team has dominated the Coronation Cup in the past couple of years, defeating both New Zealand and Brazil on the

local events Club’s most famous of grounds – The Queen’s Ground. This year the team, led by the talented Luke Tomlinson, will be hoping to retain its clean sheet against a talented team from South Africa. This will be the third time that these two countries have met in this competition and the tally currently stands at 2-0 to the home side. So no pressure for Luke and his team-mates then! But win or lose, Luke, who has worn the skipper’s armband since 2006 knows it will be a match to remember. “It’s always a great occasion to be involved in,” he says. “To play for your country, and to be captain, is a high honour in any sport. It’s always a great feeling to go out there and play in front of a huge home crowd. As players, it means so much to us.” The support of Audi at this International Polo at Guards Polo Club on Sunday 22 July not only guarantees to give the best English players the opportunity to shine on this most famous of days, but is also enabling the governing body, the Hurlingham Polo Association and Audi to create a platform of international events at other clubs around the country too. Audi has created an International Test Match Series – with England games at Cowdray Park in Sussex, Beaufort in Gloucestershire and, for the first time at Cheshire Racecourse too. This not only says much about the depth of talent and interest in the sport in the UK today, but also highlight’s Audi’s commitment to the oldest team sport in the world. The Audi International Day naturally becomes a late summer highlight of the British sporting calendar. However, to ensure that it does not clash with that other great sporting occasion in 2012, the London Olympics, the polo will be staged a week earlier than usual – on Sunday 22 July. Despite this date change, it remains framed around those other great sporting and social events - Henley, Wimbledon, Ascot and the Lord’s Test match and continues to offer two outstanding polo games – the Coronation Cup in the afternoon and a morning game – showcasing up-and-coming English talent. Of course this year, in honour of Her Majesty The Queen, the winners of the morning game, Young England v The Commonwealth, will receive a new cup this year – the Diamond Jubilee Trophy. Her Majesty, of course, is a huge supporter of the sport, having watched her husband and eldest son play and now two of her grandsons, HRH The Duke of Cambridge and HRH Prince Harry. Although there is a new name associated with this event, some things remain very much the same. Pomp, pageantry and elegance will be very much the order of the day, with plenty of opportunities for visitors to Guards Polo Club to enjoy some of the finest hospitality available at any sporting event. This may be courtesy of Pink Food in the Guards Members’ Marquee, with its delicious lunch and afternoon tea menu or seated within Keith’s Prowse’s Chukkas marquee. Here guests have the perfect environment from which to enjoy a wonderful, relaxing day of polo, including a wonderful Best of British menu in honour of the Diamond Jubilee. Meanwhile Chinawhite will be celebrating its 11th year at the International Polo. With hospitality options for both day and evening – or even a combination of the two, this fantastic, dramatic marquee can offer something for everyone. With leading DJ Calvin Harris headlining the decks in the evening, the marquee will become the polo party of the year – if not the decade. The Audi International Day has all the ingredients to create a polo day to remember. So whether you have an Audi invitation to its elegant lunch in the Clubhouse or planning a more informal affair with friends and family at the Club, there are plenty of opportunities to create your own lasting memories.

COMPETITION
N
o doubt you will all have heard of Henley Regatta and the Henley Festival which take place at the start of July, and also the world-famous “Edinburgh fringe”.....but you may not know that Henley also has a top-rated Fringe Festival, which this year takes place from 16th – 21st July. In just five years, the Henley version has established itself in the top echelon of “fringe festivals” in the country – it was voted in the top 3 in the country by a poll of the Fringe circuit performers last year, and is used as a preview by several shows that are Edinburgh bound in August!! The Fringe’s founder, Jo Southwell, lives near Henley and has been involved in acting pretty much since she took her first steps, and has had a successful and varied career which has taken in Ireland, Los Angeles and the West End, as well as several minor TV roles.....and she has lots of awards too numerous to mention here – but suffice it to say she really lives and breathes drama and comedy!! In her own words, Jo set up the Henley Fringe Trust as “a charity to provide professional performers with a unique theatre opportunity whilst giving young actors a taste of what is to come”. She felt that Henley was the perfect place to have professional theatre that is affordable, quality and accessible. The vast majority of the shows are priced between £6 and £9 – brilliant value!! And how right she was!! After only 5 years the fringe has grown to encompass a staggering 14 venues, 31 shows, 180 performances and around 250 actors and actresses.....and there are many more shows clamouring to get onto the Henley schedule. This year Jo and her team are hoping to hit the magic 10,000 total audience for the 1st time!! A major part of this remarkable success story is clearly that Jo has attracted many innovative and hilarious

THE FRINGE comedy acts to Henley, and this year is no exception with the return of the fabulous Mark Restuccia and the insightful Helen Keen, both nominees for a BBC Comedy Award, as well as the hugely successful Tom Rosenthal star of Friday Night Dinner and a Kelly’s Comedy regular. Add to that the three Edinburgh preview shows, plus the many returning regulars such as the Teak show and Direct Devitt (both of whom are Edinburgh regulars).....and you won’t stop laughing all week!! If you just fancy something different, there are several children’s shows in the afternoon, plus 6 drama productions and 3 innovative adaptions of Shakespeare’s classics to enjoy. Many of the
venues that are restaurants offer discounts to festival ticketholders – including a fantastic 50% off food at the Hotel du Vin and Bistro – almost worth the trip in itself!! And you really can make a week of it – many Henley locals attend events most days of the festival, and you can do 3 shows a day if you can stand the pace. Jo tells us that there are now several people who take a week’s annual holiday for the fringe – including one couple who travel 150 miles from the Solent by boat for the week!! So why not get down to Henley and discover another side of this beautiful town’s rich cultural and party scene!! For more information and to buy tickets online, visit www.henleyfringe.org
We have teamed up with the Henley Fringe to offer one lucky couple the chance to win 10 (that’s right 10!!) tickets to the fringe. You can use these tickets as one big group and go to one show, or go to up to 5 shows as a couple....or any combination in between!! You can of course take advantage of all the food and other discounts on offer – so why not go along for a couple of days or evenings!! All you need to do is answer the following question. How many performances will there be at this year’s Henley Fringe?? Email your answers to patrick@fishmediagroup.co.uk by midnight on Monday 2nd July. Winners will be notified by Wednesday 4th July and will then have the opportunity to book their tickets direct with the festival organisers. You can find out all you need to know about the Henley Fringe 2012 and book your tickets online at www.henleyfringe.org We hope our readers will take this opportunity to sample what promises to be a brilliant Henley Fringe 2012 – hope to see you there! Terms and conditions 1. The prize is available to readers of Life Magazines and is not transferable. 2. There is no cash alternative to this prize 3. Prize winning tickets must be booked by phone with the organisers on 01491 539885 4. Land of make believe
M
ake Believe Ideas is a children’s publisher based in the heart of Berkhamsted. Established in 2004, the innovative publishing house creates imaginative books that sell worldwide. The company has a dedicated team whose creative genius inspires many original ideas and take books from initial concept to final design. The result is a popular and very successful range appealing to children and adults alike! To cope with a growing international demand for beautiful series of baby, toddler, activity, learning and illustrated story books, the company has recently moved. This has provided the fantastic opportunity to set up a child-friendly café downstairs from the office. Seeing a need for somewhere that could cater to the many young families in the local area, the managing director of Make Believe Ideas developed a vision for a café that could complement her company and fill the gap felt by local parents, nannies and grandparents. The café was an immediate hit, boasting a delicious range of homemade food and locally-sourced drinks and selling at a discount the beautiful children’s books conceptualized and designed upstairs! There is a play area for young children, walls brightly decorated with MBI book characters and even a Hickory Dickory Dock clock full of books for sale! Every day at 4pm the café hosts “Storytime”, where kids are entertained with stories such as the ever-popular Camilla the Cupcake Fairy or one of Kate Toms’ charmingly adapted nursery rhymes, to give parents a few minutes of precious peace! Paramount to the café’s founding, though, is a focus on giving back to the community. There have been numerous fundraising activities held by the café, such as a team of employees taking part in local Fun 32

Runs; a coffee-tasting evening with local company, Smiths Coffee; even a regular “Fancy a Cuppa?” coffee morning, which is proving popular with older members of the community as well as the young. An employee of the publisher even entered Berkhamsted’s “Biggest Loser” campaign, which ran from January to mid May. The café takes holidays seriously, providing activities such as craft mornings and colouring competitions. Parents are overjoyed to have somewhere to take children while schools are closed. Throughout the summer, customers can buy take-away picnics for the whole family, and come rain or shine, the café is ready to help celebrate a special birthday – for under £10 each, kids can take part in a fun-filled afternoon with tasty activities and a special present for the birthday child. Even during term-time the café encourages children to enjoy books. On World Book Day the staff worked hard to promote books made by MBI, even dressing up as favourite book characters! A free book was given out with every order and all patrons received an exclusive MBI bookmark. The café has enjoyed a constant stream of parents, children, employees from nearby businesses and visitors to the area, but if you haven’t yet visited, do come and give it a try. Events to watch out for during this year’s London 60s week include: Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 classic “The Birds” screening at the BFI Southbank; Roger Daltrey live at Indigo; The Bootleg Beatles at Dingwalls, Camden Sunday Best Scooterfest 2 - Capel Manor Gardens 20th Century Icons’ exhibition at Proud, Chelsea The “Drifters” live at Fairfield Halls; And as always they end with “The Eel Pie All Stars” live at the Barmy Arms on Sunday 31st July, drawing the best vintage scooters and sharpest dressed Mods. Supporters of London 60s Week make this possible by getting back to the basics and creating their own grass roots happenings. We are a not for profit organisation and no one gets paid, people get involved because they are passionate about the 60s and celebrating that with London’s new generation of bands, designers and fashion leaders. All London 60s Week partners pledge there support to affordable groovy fun. INTERNATIONAL ORCHESTRAS, ANIMATED ARTISTS AND AN ICONIC BARENBOIM BEETHOVEN 13TH JULY – 8TH SEPTEMBER 2012
T
he 2012 BBC Proms has revealed details of the broad-ranging programme of events planned for its 118th season. Opening at the Royal Albert Hall on 13th July 2012, the festival promises two months of the world’s greatest artists, composers, orchestras and ensembles across 92 concerts, including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, this summer promises to be unlike any other, and as such, the Proms is delighted to be part of the London 2012 Festival. Throughout the season there is music to reflect these major events, and on the opening night of the Proms, four British conductors take to the Royal Albert Hall stage to ‘pass the baton’: Martyn Brabbins, Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner and Sir Roger Norrington. Daniel Barenboim and his celebrated West-Eastern Divan Orchestra make Proms history by performing all nine Beethoven symphonies - the first time the entire cycle has featured at the Proms in over 60 years - whilst also becoming the Proms’ first ever non-BBC orchestra-in-residence. English National Opera and the Royal Opera House both perform complete operas in the same season for the first time; the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra becomes the first Brazilian orchestra to appear at the festival and in an exciting collaboration with Aardman Animations, the much-loved Wallace & Gromit characters are transported to the Royal Albert Hall stage for the world premiere of Wallace’s new work, a BBC commission! The season celebrates some of the world’s most eminent living composers including Pierre Boulez. British composers celebrating significant birthdays include Oliver Knussen and Simon Bainbridge at 60, and Hugh Wood and Alexander Goehr at 80. There are also 150th birthday tributes to Debussy and Delius. As ever the Proms remains firmly committed to new music, with 17 BBC commissions - a further five world premieres and 14 other UK and London premieres, including versions of music by Mendelssohn and Gabrieli, previously unheard in the UK. top of this are 10 short BBC commissions which make up the Music Walk around South Kensington, part of the centenary celebrations of John Cage. Youth is a major focus of the festival. From 4th – 6th August four youth orchestras from around the UK, as well as the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and Wales, perform at the Proms. Other UK and international youth ensembles include the Juilliard Orchestra and the Aldeburgh World Orchestra, created to bring together the best young performers from around the globe. The BBC Proms Youth Choir gives its inaugural performance, part of an on-going four-year project. In addition to the six BBC performing groups who once again provide the backbone to the season, there is a stellar line up of international orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker with Sir Simon Rattle and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Bernard Haitink, who for the first time give two performances each in one season. The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly also gives two concerts. In the spirit of the Proms enduring mission to make the best classical music available to everyone, every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 with many televised on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Four. For the seventh year in a row, Promming tickets remain just £5 and for the first time this season, seats are half-price for under-18s. Roger Wright, Director BBC Proms and Controller BBC Radio 3, says: "From Daniel Barenboim to Wallace & Gromit, we once again look forward to welcoming the world’s greatest artists to a festival where there is something for everyone to enjoy. Promming tickets remain just £5 and there are plenty of ways for people to enjoy the events in person, on radio, television and online. The BBC’s on-going commitment in running the festival allows the Proms to be one of the best value-for-money experiences anywhere." Tickets are now on sale via www.bbc.co.uk/proms or 0844 209 7353 and in person at the Royal Albert Hall ■

run by Amika London, offering an eclectic mix of international opera, jazz and swing sounds. The tempo increases throughout the evening as organisers encourage the guests to party the night away. After the prize giving on Saturday evening, ‘Beach Party the Polo’ will kick off, infusing the chic surroundings with a festival atmosphere as live bands will perform, followed by the beats of international House DJ Colin ‘StarRocker’ Pereira. The competition is being sponsored by a range of companies, including Asahi, Sunseeker, Pommery Champagne and Amika London, and even us here at Sandbanks Life; who are set to sponsor the Scottish boys. Captain of Scotland, Jamie le Hardy said of the event: “It’s a very social weekend and it’s a lot of fun – there’s a real buzz! It’s a great spectacle. You’re right next to the action so it’s a great way of showing polo to the public.” Jamie Le Hardy is widely considered to be one of the best British players the game has seen over the last decade and has been decorated with a host of prestigious awards. Born in Dorset, into an Army family, whose parents travelled extensively throughout Jamie’s early years, his first recollection of polo was watching his father play in Hong Kong. On returning to the UK, Jamie became involved in pony club polo where his passion for the sport started to flourish and his talent clearly showed. He began his career fresh out of school; within three years he had won ‘Young Player of the Year’ award and the British Open Gold Cup: “Those two events really launched my career and since then I’ve been one of the highest rated players in England... I’m half Scottish, half English; my Mum’s Scottish. I played for England a lot in my career and now I’ve taken up the Scottish mantel and am captaining the team.” His other accolades include numerous ‘Most Valuable Player’ awards; he was the first England captain to beat Argentina since World War II and he has won the Golden Jubilee Trophy with Prince Harry. As well as being a world-class talent on the pitch, le Hardy is also a professional A Grade Umpire, and an HPA qualified coach; he owns and runs the le Hardy Polo Academy (based in Surrey) which caters for all ages and abilities: “I spend quite a bit of time coaching, developing horses and
putting a bit back into the sport... If you want to get into polo, have a look at our website and speak to me.” www.lehardypolo.com World renowned English polo-player Jack Kidd is also one of the fantastic sportsman playing during the tournament. Among his numerous achievements which include tournament victories around the world, Kidd has achieved two European gold medals in the Federation of International Polo Championships on grass and an Arena Gold Cup win in 2006. In addition to his success as an outdoor player on grass, Kidd is also perhaps one of the best known players on the Snowpolo circuit; claiming victory at numerous tournaments, perhaps most notably Cartier in St Morita. He is also a pivotal promoter in the recent launch of the Berenberg Snowpolo tournament in January. Influenced by his father who show-jumped for Great Britain at the Olympics and played polo for England, Kidd’s love of the game began at the tender age of 14, “By the time I was 17 I was a professional and twenty years later I’m still a pro”, he said. A truly passionate player, Kidd said of the game: “It’s completely addictive; the most amazing sport you could ever play; to gallop on horses and score goals... its a great, great sport!” I spoke to Kidd, who having spent the last five consecutive days on the pitch, was cooling down and getting some well earned respite. For a man who plays polo consistently throughout the year, his praise of the British Beach Polo Championships was illustrative of the fabulous weekend spectators can expect, “It’s one of the best weekends of the English polo season. I look forward to it immensely and I look forward to playing against all the other countries” Spectators can expect some exciting games, watching these world-class talents stretched to their best, as the sand surface does for a fast paced and technically demanding game: “Sand is probably the most difficult surface to play on out of them all; snow or grass. You have to be very skilled with the horse and very good at hitting the ball in the air.” When I asked him what visitors to the championships can expect, Kidd simply said, “Big parties and big polo matches. It should be a stonker!” Visit www.sandpolo.com for more information on how to book ■ JUNE2012 41

Justin Rose said: “Seve has been a hero to me all my life. Seve’s style of play continues to inspire me, and golfers all over the world, but there will never be another Seve. Since the first Championships in 1877, Wimbledon has grown from its roots as a garden-party tournament to a Grand Slam tournament with a following of millions around the world. The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, responsible for staging the world’s leading tennis tournament, is a private Club founded in 1868, originally as ‘The All England Croquet Club’. Its first ground was situated off Worple Road, Wimbledon. In 1875 lawn tennis, a game introduced by major Walter Clopton Wingfield a year or so earlier and originally called Sphairistike, was added to the activities of the Club. In the spring of 1877 the Club was re-titled ‘The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club’ and signalled its change of name by instituting the first Lawn Tennis Championship. The only event held in 1877 was the Gentlemen’s Singles which was won by Spencer Gore, an old Harrovian rackets player, from a field of 22. About 200 spectators paid one shilling each to watch the final. 47
JUNE2012
The lawns at the Ground were arranged in such a way that the principal court was situated in the middle with the others arranged around it; hence the title ‘Centre Court’, which was retained when the Club moved in 1922 to the present site in Church Road opened by King George V. The foresight of building the present stadium, designed to hold 14,000 people, did more to popularise the game worldwide than anything that has happened to date. However, in 1980 four new courts were brought into commission on the north side of the ground, which meant the Centre Court was once more at the centre of the tournament. The opening of the new No. 1 Court in 1997 emphasised the description. By 1882 activity at the Club was almost exclusively confined to lawn tennis and that year the word ‘croquet’ was dropped from the title. However, for sentimental reasons, it was restored in 1899 and the club has been known as ‘The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club’ ever since.

ENTER THE LADIES In 1884 the Ladies’ Singles was inaugurated and, from an entry of 13 players, Maud Watson became the first champion. That same year, the Gentlemen’s Doubles was started, with the trophy donated by the Oxford University Lawn Tennis Club after the end of their doubles championship, played from 1879 to 1883. OVERSEAS CHAMPIONS By the turn of the century Wimbledon had assumed an international character and in 1905 May Sutton of the United States became the first Champion from overseas when she won the Ladies’ Singles. She repeated her success in 1907, the year when Norman Brookes of Australia became the first Gentlemen’s Singles champion from overseas. Since that year, only two players from Great Britain, Arthur Gore and Fred Perry, have managed to win the Men’s Singles while there have been five British Ladies’ Champions since Wimbledon moved to Church Road — Kitty McKane Godfree, Dorothy Round, Angela Mortimer, Ann Jones and Virginia Wade. WARTIME WIMBLEDON During the Second World War the Club managed to remain open despite a severe curtailment of staff. The premises were used for a variety of civil defence and military functions such as fire and ambulance services, Home Guard and a decontamination unit. Troops stationed within the vicinity were allowed to use the main concourse for drilling. Another familiar sight around the ground was a small farmyard consisting of pigs, hens, geese, rabbits, etc. In October 1940 a ‘stick’ of five 500lb bombs struck Centre Court, resulting in the loss of 1,200 seats.
48
JUNE2012
With the war in Europe over, signs of normality began to return to Wimbledon during June and July 1945, when a series of matches between Allied servicemen took place on the old No. 1 Court, which had escaped enemy action. Early in 1946 the decision was taken to resume The Championships that summer. In more recent years long-standing records have been broken. In 1980 Bjorn Borg of Sweden became the first player to win the Gentlemen’s Singles five times in the post-challenge round era; a feat replicated by Roger Federer between 2003 and 2007. In 1985 Boris Becker, aged 17, became the youngest player, the first unseeded player and the first German to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. In 1987 Martina Navratilova of the United States became the first player to win the Ladies’ Singles six times in succession and in 1990 she attained the all-time record of nine victories in the event. Pete Sampras of the United States registered his seventh win in 2000 and in 2001, Goran Ivanisevic became the first wildcard to win the Gentlemen’s Singles. Over the years the Club has constantly been aware of the need to provide facilities and ground improvements compatible with the pace and demand of modern day sport. Seldom has a year gone by without alteration to the ground or some organisational change taking place. In recent years the momentum has increased and major works programmes have provided improved facilities for the players, spectators, officials and media. WIMBLEDON 2012 Wimbledon 2012 will see the finest players from over 60 countries compete in the five main Championships events. In the second week

of the Tournament, these players will be joined by Juniors, Veteran and Wheelchair competitors, playing in their own events on the Championships’ lawns. The All England Club, Wimbledon has announced that the total prize money at this year’s 126th Championships, will be £16.1million, an increase of 10% on 2011. Grounds open at 10:30am each day. On Courts No.2–19, play is provisionally scheduled to start at 11:30am for main draw matches on at least the first eight days and at 11:00am for the Junior matches on the middle Saturday and during the second week. Centre Court play scheduled to start at 1pm, except the last two days when 2pm. No.1 Court play scheduled to start at 1pm for all 13 days. CHANGES TO THE ORDER OF PLAY The Club tries to play all matches on the courts and days published. However, occasionally it is necessary to switch a match from one court to another. This can be for a number of reasons. Some players remain involved in several events towards the end of The Championships and it may be necessary to move a match to avoid a clash. The Club tries to give similar rest periods between matches for players due to play each other. The majority of tickets for The Championships are allocated through the Public Ballot. Applications for the 2012 Ballot are now closed. The Ticket Office is open for all ticketing queries, normal opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9am – 5pm (excl. Bank Holidays). Tel: 020 8971 2473. Please Note: The Ticket Office is available for all ticket and ballot enquiries but is NOT a Box Office.

SMELLS LIKE SUMMER
R
eplace your signature fragrance with a summer scent. Lisa Haynes reveals this season's hottest limited editions. After non-stop April showers and floods, we've never needed a taste of summer like we do now. Thankfully a spritz of fragrance can be evocative of blue skies, white beaches and frothy oceans, whatever the weather outside. So take full advantage of the scent-switching season. Just as our clothing layers become lighter, so too should our fragrance - think eau de toilette or eau fraiche. Even long-established classic scents like Jean Paul Gaultier, Calvin Klein and Issey Miyake lighten up for the sunshine season with refreshing alternatives. "Wintery perfumes tend to be spicier, heavier and more complex than summer fragrances so by the time the sunshine hits, people are usually ready for a change," explains 52

JUNE’S BEEN AN EXCITING MONTH WITH THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE AND THE EUROPEAN FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP. ALL THE STREET PARTIES DURING THE BANK HOLIDAY WERE GREAT FUN IN SPITE OF THE WEATHER, AND LET’S HOPE ENGLAND DO WELL IN THE EUROS. THIS MONTH WE TALK TO DR KAPLESH BAVISHA WHO IS A SPECIALIST PERIODONTIST AT ROSEBANK DENTAL PRACTICE IN CHORLEYWOOD.
Q&A WHAT IS A PERIODONTIST AND WHY WOULD I GET REFERRED TO ONE? Periodontists are dentists who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of gum (periodontal) disease. They are also known as gum specialists. Your dentist has decided that your gums require this special care. By referring you to a periodontist, your dentist is showing a strong commitment to ensuring the best possible dental care for you. To help you understand why specialist treatment might be needed, and how your teeth can be saved, this question & answers will tell you about some of the most frequently asked questions about gum treatment. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF GUM DISEASE? The signs of gum disease are bleeding, swollen gums, bad breath, gum recession, loose teeth, and gaps appearing between teeth, pus and eventual tooth loss. Gum disease is not always painful and therefore often goes unnoticed and undiagnosed. It may only become evident at an advanced stage, after loss of bone and gum. WHAT CAUSES GUM DISEASE? Bacteria (plaque), growing under the gums around your teeth, lead to gum disease. If left long enough, the plaque may solidify and form hard infected deposits on the tooth called calculus (tartar). If the infection persists then the gums detach from the tooth to form a

pocket, with loss of jawbone and the ligaments that anchor the tooth to the jawbone. Unless treated, the tooth will become loose; you may end up losing the tooth. WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF GUM TREATMENT? CAN GUM DISEASE BE CURED? The main purpose of treating your gums is to remove infection and prevent further gum and bone damage. Techniques are available to regenerate lost gum and bone around diseased teeth. WHAT DOES GUM TREATMENT INVOLVE? HOW IMPORTANT IS IT TO TREAT NOW OR CAN I WAIT? Most treatment first involves scaling & deep cleaning of infected roots (placing a thin instrument between the gum and tooth). This is commonly referred to as non-surgical treatment. Your gums can be numbed for this, if necessary for your comfort. Many areas in your mouth can be expected to respond favourably. It is best to stop the disease process with treatment sooner rather than later. This helps to prevent further irreversible loss of your gums & bone. The number of visits needed depends on how much disease you have. It is also essential to help you with your plaque control. DOES GUM TREATMENT HURT? WILL I NEED TO TAKE TIME OFF WORK AFTER I HAVE HAD TREATMENT? No, modern techniques and equipment make gum treatment more comfortable now than ever before.
Effective medications are available if needed to give you comfort after treatment without the need to take time off work. Our priority is to make your treatment a positive experience and as comfortable as possible. HOW MUCH WILL TREATMENT COST AND WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS? The cost of treatment will vary depending upon your needs. After the periodontist has examined you and decided on the best recommendation for treatment, or whether you may benefit from something like dental implants, he will provide you with a treatment plan and an estimate of the cost. As you consider this health investment, keep in mind that treating gum disease is less costly and better for your health than replacing teeth lost because of gum disease. Treating gum problems will help achieve a healthy mouth and help prevent tooth loss. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER MY TREATMENT? WILL I BE FREE FROM MORE GUM DISEASE Good plaque control at home and regular gum checkups are essential to keep gum health. Once you have demonstrated good plaque control and your tissues have responded favourably, you should return to your dentist for continued general dental health care maintenance. WHAT CAN BE DONE IF I HAVE ADVANCED GUM DISEASE? Sometimes periodontal surgery is needed to get the best tissue response
(i.e. no bleeding, gum reattachment). This is particularly the case where there has been advanced bone loss. Periodontal surgery involves numbing your gums and gently lifting them a bit so that we can reach the deeper parts of the roots to clean and remove toxins. Before we can proceed with this type of treatment, a high standard of plaque control is essential. WHAT CAN BE DONE IF I HAVE GUM DISEASE AROUND A DENTAL IMPLANT? (ALSO CALLED PERI-IMPLANTITIS) If you have gum disease around a dental implant you need to get specialist help quickly, as bones can dissolve rapidly. Gum disease can occur around a dental implant for a variety of reasons. The Periodontist carefully assesses each situation and will discuss with you the best way to treat the infection. WHAT CAN BE DONE FOR GUM RECESSION, GUMMY SMILES OR UNEVEN GUM LINES? Some types of gum recession can be treated by taking gum tissue, usually from the roof of your mouth and placing it over the recession. Special techniques ensure that the healing period is not painful. This, and other cosmetic concerns such as gummy smiles and gum lines, can be discussed in detail at your consultation. It will be important to be clear about the causes of the condition (which may include gum disease) before deciding on any action. Thank you Dr Bavisha for taking the time to talk to our readers.

bad hair days
D
o you constantly have bad hair days or spend hours worrying about your hair or lack of it! Many women have freed themselves from these overwhelming feelings by visiting Rapunzel Ltd in Marlow. Rapunzel say their aim is to let every woman experience the joy of having beautiful hair – not just the lucky few! Whether your problem is hair loss, general thinning, damage, limp locks or you just don't have the hairstyle you want. Hair extensions or a hair loss solution could be the answer for you. Using only the finest European human hair with a choice of over 50 colours their highly trained technicians & stylists can add amazing volume and/or up to 24” in length in only a couple of hours, they can also transform your hair colour and give you a stylish new hair cut. They seem to be able to work miracles. There is often a belief that hair extensions can cause terrible damage to your own hair due to the weight of the extra hair, this is UNTRUE! The facts are that a single scalp hair can support a weight of 100g and an average head of hair twisted together can support 23 tons. Hair extensions applied incorrectly with a lack of experience/care/or training cause this industry a bad name. Hairdressers that have been on a single days training in hair extensions are not giving the same service or experience as experts like Rapunzel whom are specialists in their field and have been for over 20 years now. At Rapunzel they have an honest and ethical approach and take the time to listen to their clients needs and wants. No other hair extension company in the UK has the advantage of not only the vast years of experience but also their medical and tricology knowledge all rolled into one. The team at Rapunzel truly understand the relationship between our hair and our happiness. Our hair is a very public symbol of our health and a crucial factor of our overall well being. We use it to draw attention to ourselves, to express our personalities and to attract a mate – there is a known link between sexuality and hair. Hair is a secondary sexual characteristic, obviously you can't flaunt your primary ones in public. You can flaunt your hair, if your hair looks good you feel more attractive – Fact. Rapunzel specialise in all areas of hair loss from progressive thinning, often seen after the menopause to total hair loss they will have a system to help you. Ashley and Julie-anne (the directors of Rapunzel) have strived to ensure you get the best solution there is, using only the highest quality human hair and great skilled gained with over 20 years experience in the industry along with a background in pharmacology and tricology. FACTS ABOUT HAIR EXTENSIONS MYTH: Hair extensions Damage your Hair FACT: When hair extensions are applied correctly there is virtually no reason why they would damage your hair, thousands of women have used hair extensions to grow their own hair to a desired length with no adverse effects whatsoever. However, that is not to say everybody's hair is suitable for hair extensions. At Rapunzel the safety of your hair is taken very seriously hence a free consultation is offered along with a complimentary check up appointment. MYTH: You can't have hair extensions if your hair is fine FACT: In fact, many women with fine hair choose to use hair extensions to add extra volume. Extensions can be done in very tiny size to be virtually undetectable . MYTH: You have to dye your hair to the same colour as the extensions. FACT: This would not happen at Rapunzel as every hair colour is kept in stock all of the time. MYTH: People can tell when you are wearing hair extensions FACT: When they are done properly by a skilled Technician, placed in the right places with the correct amount of extensions used & expertly cut in, hair extensions look completely like your own hair and undetectable. MYTH: You can't keep up your highlights & root colour when the hair extensions are in FACT: Actually you can still do highlights, you just work around the extensions. When dying roots the colour can be applied as it normally would. At Rapunzel once you have our extensions in we can look after all your hairdressing needs if you would like us to. MYTH: You can't brush & style easily with hair extensions FACT: As long as the right brush is used (supplied by Rapunzel Ltd), then you can brush right into and through the roots with no damage to your own hair or the extensions. You can also use straightening irons, curling tongs & heated rollers as long as you are careful to avoid the bonds. JUNE2011 59

A COMPANY WITH A SOUND VISION…
FOUNDED IN 1972, SEVENOAKS SOUND & VISION IS THE UK’S LEADING SPECIALIST RETAILER OF HI-FI AND HOME CINEMA SYSTEMS, WITH OVER 40 STORES NATIONWIDE.
S
evenoaks Sound & Vision in Chorleywood is a privately owned franchise outlet of the organisation and, after 20 years in St Albans Road, Watford, moved to Chorleywood 18 months ago. “We chose to move away from Watford at the end of our old lease and looked high and low for a suitable premises that met the special demands of our product display and demonstration facilities.” said Helen Gilbert, one of the franchisees; “The old Barclays premises in the village presented us with the perfect solution in terms of location, size and layout.” Following a period of internal refurbishment, some major technology and cable installation and minor structural improvements, the business moved in and opened its doors on the 1st of November 2010. “We are delighted with our new store”, Helen continued; “the combination of a busy shopping thoroughfare and wide catchment area, large showroom floor and two state-of-the-art, fully equipped permanent AV demonstration suites gives us the ideal blend of a light and airy retail environment plus interchangeable demonstration facilities that present customers with all the very best that modern home entertainment technology has to offer.” The business prides itself on delivering excellent customer service, backed up by offering a wide range of products from some of the world’s leading brands. “From a simple mini Hi-Fi stereo system to a custom designed and installed multi-room home

The whole world of home entertainment is evolving and changing at a rapid pace and we try to stay one step ahead of developments and trends to ensure that the solutions we deliver are the very best there is and that they will continue to deliver for years to come.” And it’s not all about the new digital age either - they still have analogue stereo systems on display so customers can relive the golden age of Vinyl - a format that is experiencing something of a resurgence. “There’s something for everyone here at Sevenoaks Sound & Vision Chorleywood - for all ages, tastes and budgets. WHEN IS A DOOR NOT A DOOR? …WHEN IT’S A-JAR
W
hy do we seem to be able to remember some of the old jokes our school friends and parents told us… particularly the bad ones! That said, in this energy conservation age, thermally efficiency wise, a door in practical terms is not actually a door (in the energy saving sense) when it is a-jar, as obviously when open a door lets out all the energy that has been generated by the property’s heating system. A door is also not a door when it is a-jar in the security sense either, as it is designed to provide access and egress for the property’s owner(s), visitors and guests. You don’t find many UK households today who leave their front and/or back doors unlocked at night! I do know a few who do risk leaving them open during the day, but if they were to be burgled their insurance company would not pay them anything, in the same way if an unlocked car is stolen. Nowadays, most insurance companies insist on multi-point locking for front and back doors,
and sometimes require an additional deadlock, and unless when you leave your property you do lock both locks (i.e. the yale lock and the mortice lock) its contents simply will not be insured, despite the fact you have paid a premium! Doors are a common cause of draughts and leaks in most homes, so fitting replacement double glazed or even triple glazed residential doors is a sure way to reduce the amount of heat your property is losing as a result of retaining old inefficient doors. The added bonus is that multi-locking comes as standard on virtually every aluminium, composite and UPVC double glazed front door in the UK marketplace. By raising the door handles vertically on these high security doors, one not only activates the locking mechanisms, but also engages the gaskets around the door frame, creating a seal, keeping out the cold, reducing draughts and keeping expensive heat inside. A door is neither a container (i.e. a jar!) when it is open or shut,
but when open it does let the cold outside in and the warmth stored inside out. Thermally efficiency wise, your property will greatly benefit by fitting it with double glazed doors, and obviously benefit even more if you install a triple glazed UPVC front door, back door or a set of triple glazed French doors. Aluminium double glazed residential doors are excellent replacement doors in terms of added energy efficiency and security, however the most thermally efficient and secure doors are the top of the range composite front doors, and composite French doors that are available in the UK. The downside is that high quality double glazed composite front doors, do cost more than UPVC or aluminium replacement doors, but when it comes to saving energy, the security of your home and fantastic aesthetic appearance, do you really want to compromise and settle for second or third best? Even though Hazlemere’s composite door range is the most expensive type of
replacement doors in their High Wycombe doors showroom (although less than the cost of double glazed solid hardwood front doors), they are still Hazlemere’s best selling front doors, which tells its own story. That said, when it comes to replacement back doors, kitchen doors or French doors opening into the garden or onto the patio, most owners in the South of England are more than happy to install UPVC or aluminium doors as their back door or kitchen door, given these areas are usually more secure in the first place, and the double glazed replacement aluminium or UPVC doors are a dramatic improvement both security wise and thermally wise on the old leaky and draughty doors. So when is a door not a door? When it is not double or triple glazed… and securely shut! If you would like more information on Hazlemere Windows thermally efficient insulated bespoke residential doors telephone 01494 854266 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk JUNE2012 67

WHY TRIPLE GLAZING IS BETTER THAN DOUBLE GLAZING
M
ore importantly, which is the better product for you and your property? Nowadays, although they do cost more, triple glazed UPVC windows, residential doors and French doors are not that much more expensive than double glazed products. Properly installed UPVC triple glazing offers unrivalled value for money when household energy savings and consequent financial savings are taken into account (i.e. painting and decorating). However, as triple glazing has an extra pane of glass, each sealed unit is thicker and more heavy duty. So not only does the extra glass cost at least 50% more, each window and/or door costs more to transport as is much heavier. Top quality UPVC triple glazing, with a U-value of 1.0 W/m²k, is around 40% more thermally efficient that standard “A” rated double glazing and 60% more thermally efficient than standard "C" rated double glazing. This is a massive potential beneficial energy saving
for home owners, bearing in mind that between 2003-2009 gas prices (i.e. heating bills) rose by an average of 14% each year. Triple glazing is worth the added investment for five reasons: 1) Triple glazing is approximately 40% more thermally efficient than "A" rated UPVC double glazing so energy savings are far higher. 2) Triple glazed windows and doors will further reduce draughts and cold spots in a room that currently has less thermally efficient windows and doors. 3) Triple glazed windows and doors can reduce the impact of exterior noise. They do reduce noise, and if the middle pane of glass is a different type of glass to two external panes, this also helps toward acoustic insulation. 4) Triple glazed windows and doors could save each UK home owner over £10,000 during the next 20 years, which is not inconsiderable when the rising costs of fuel are taken
into consideration. 5) A 3rd pane of glass, by definition, makes a triple glazed sealed unit much harder to break than a double glazed sealed unit – especially when the middle pane is made of toughened glass. What’s more, all Hazlemere's “A” rated UPVC triple glazed windows are internally beaded and the glass unit can only be removed from the frame by a person who is inside the premises. Double glazed windows are usually made up of two panes of float glass, unless the sealed units are in a door, within 300mm of a door or in windows that start less than 800mm from floor level, in which case Building Regulations stipulate all glazing must then be toughened glass. It is important that triple glazed windows have a toughened middle pane even if the two outside panes are float glass, as this helps prevent thermal breakage of the middle pane. Thermal breakage of the middle pane can occur when
there is a considerable difference in the indoor and outdoor temperature of a property. Because the thermally efficient triple glazed sealed unit keeps more heat in, the internal pane will remain at roughly room temperature. Similarly, because less heat is escaping, the external pane will remain cold when it is cold outdoors. Therefore the middle pane of glass is subject to very contrasting temperatures i.e. warmth from the internal pane/cavity and cold from the external pane/cavity, and thermal breakage could occur if standard annealed glass was used. By using toughened glass, the possibility of thermal breakage is all but eliminated. A GREAT british YEAR
n
obody can doubt that 2012 is going to be a great year for Great Britain. The recent Jubilee celebrations saw around 1.3 million people alone watching the Jubilee flotilla from the banks and bridges of the Thames, with hundreds of thousands gathering on the Mall for a concert the following day. The nation was gripped by Jubilee Fever as communities all across the country celebrated with street parties. Added to that, we are now on a countdown to the 2012 London Olympics with everyone in the country feeling very patriotic. We can feel confident as a country having already proved we can put on a great show for the world to watch. Statistics are staggering - the entire Olympic project has involved more than 46,000 workers and the Olympic village will house 23,000 workers and officials during the games. It seems only natural with such patriotism in the air, that British furniture is acknowledged since so many factors contribute to make our furniture truly great in the eyes of the consumer, the retailer and the wider international audience. At St Giles Furniture we are proud to manufacture high quality bespoke furniture in our own workshop in Lincolnshire using skilled craftsmen and quality materials. As a
74
JUNE2012
manufacturer and retailer we are part of an amazingly diverse industry producing both traditional and contemporary furniture and everything in-between. The Association for British Furniture Manufacturers recently helped coordinate a special campaign “It Is Great British Furniture” – an initiative designed to increase awareness of all the key factors which make British furniture truly great such as quality and comfort, whether the piece is designed specifically for your home using the finest materials and finally that the manufacturer is proud to say his furniture is “British Made”! The campaign has been hugely successful in raising awareness and encouraging retailers and consumers to “fly the flag”! The Far East had a tight hold on the furniture industry over the last few years with its’ cheap labour and materials but they are also facing increased costs these days and the industry generally is going through a period of great change. The UK has manufactured high quality products for generations and has a strong history in manufacturing, textiles and furniture. High Wycombe was an important centre for the furniture industry for many years so it feels right to continue that legacy by providing high quality British product for our customers to enjoy. Apart from anything else this is a much “greener” choice than any imported goods and will also help to boost our economy. British furniture is great! Its’ furniture for all generations and can be exactly what you want it to be! So, if you are thinking of furniture for any part of your home please come and talk to us, fly the flag in this iconic year and let’s all be proud to be British!! www.stgilesfurniture.com info@stgilesfurniture.com 01494 873031

then strain through a conical strainer. For Panna cotta 3. Place the honey in a saucepan and reduce by two thirds. 4. Leave to cool 5. Soak your gelatine in the milk until soft. 6. Pour 400ml of your cream into a heavy bottomed pan and add the seeds of vanilla pod and infuse with the pod. 7. Reduce by a third – take off the heat. Remove the vanilla pod. 8. Take the gelatine out of milk, then whisk into the reduced cream until dissolved. 9. Leave the cream mixture to cool for 5 minutes and then place in the fridge for approx 1 hour until the mixture thickens to a lightly whipped cream consistency. 10. Add the reduced honey and whisk in. 11. Lightly whip the remaining cream with the icing sugar and fold in to the mixture 12. Spoon into six pretty glass dishes and place in the fridge to set.
14. Place the pan on medium heat and let the mixture first melt, then turn to goo and then to a bubbling mass the colour of maple syrup - this will take 3 minutes or so. 15. Take off the heat, whisk in the bicarbonate of soda and watch the syrup turn into a bubbling cloud of aerated pale gold. Turn this immediately onto a piece of reusable baking parchment or greased foil. 16. Leave until set ant then chop roughly into little nuggets saving the dust with a large knife.
For the Honeycomb 13. Place the sugar and syrup into a saucepan and stir together to mix.
The reducing of the honey makes the flavour more intense and gives the pannacotta a luscious pale golden colour.
To serve Place five plump raspberries in a circle on top of each set pannacotta. Drizzle with the raspberry puree sprinkle with the nuggets and crushed honeycomb Finish with a scoop of crème fraiche or crème fraiche ice cream.

£100,000 whisky
TO CELEBRATE THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE
80
JUNE2012
J
ust 60 bottles of a Diamond Jubilee scotch, made by Johnnie Walker distiller Diageo, have been produced for sale, and are being offered to known collectors of rare and expensive whiskies. Another single bottle will be given to the Queen herself. The whisky is a blend of grain and malt whiskies dating back from 1952, and finished in casks made of oak from the Queen’s Sandringham estate. If you don’t have £100,000 to spend and are wondering what it tastes like, the master blender for all Johnnie Walker whiskies, Jim Beveridge, said he is “surprised and delighted” by the way the Jubilee whisky has turned out. “With whisky as old as 60 years, sometimes it can be a bit crusty and the flavours can be a bit subdued. But this one is very vibrant,” he said. “It has a fresh fruity flavour, and a finish which is smoky and also has an exotic fruit taste.” He added that Diageo has whisky stocks dating back 50 years, but for anything older than that there are far fewer to choose from. “1952 was an interesting year for distillers, as the whisky industry started to get back on its feet after the Second World War “ said Mr Beveridge. The whisky was bottled on 7th February in Baccarat crystal decanters, at the Royal Lochnagar Distillery on the edges of the Queen’s Balmoral estate. David Gates, the head of Diageo’s whisky business, said the company originally planned to offer the Diamond Jubilee whisky to wealthy afficionados in Asia Pacific and Latin America, but has now had requests from the US and Europe as well. All profits from the sale of the bottles will go to the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST).

the complex
world of
family law
v
Q. After 25 difficult years, I now want a divorce – but I’m frightened about the future. My husband will get a big pension, but I won’t as I’ve been bringing up the children. He says the pension is his as he worked for it. What can I do? A. If the pension was built up during the marriage, it’s usually regarded as a family asset which can be shared just like savings. The divorce court can order that you each get a ‘pension pot’ – expressed as a percentage of the whole. A lawyer will usually seek specialist advice from a pensions expert. Q. I pay my ex-wife child support, assessed by the Child Support Agency. She now wants to send our son to a private school, and says I must pay the fees. Is she right? A. Child support is not intended to cover education fees. However, your ex-wife can apply to the court to obtain an order for you to pay the private school fees – if this education is considered appropriate and if you can afford it. Q. I have three children and my ex-husband pays maintenance for me plus the child support. I want to let a room to a man-friend who needs a home. Now my ex-husband says he 84
JUNE2012
The world of family law is a complex one, and when a family unit has broken down there are so many questions about financial matters and the children. Family Lawyer and Mediator, LAURENCE SINGER, answers some of those questions…
only has to pay child support and not maintenance (because we are ‘co-habiting’) which will make me even worse off. Is this true? A. The court says that this is not necessarily true, whether or not you are really co-habiting, and will consider it more from an economic rather than a ‘moral’ perspective. The first duty is to protect the welfare of the children – and such a reduction
in your income may adversely affect them. Q. Does divorce revoke my Will, regarding my ex-wife? A. If you have willed anything to your ex-wife, then that gift will not happen – but the rest of the Will still remains valid. However, if you do want your ex-wife to benefit, you must say this specifically in a new Will.
Q. My ex-husband is from the Middle East, and wants to take our children to his home country for a ‘holiday’. I’m frightened he may not return with them. What can I do? A. If you have time, this is an opportunity for you to both go to family mediation and talk through your concerns, for reassurance. There are complicated laws about international child abduction – as some countries will automatically return children to the UK, but others won’t. A Family Lawyer with experience in international child cases can advise on this. The court can act quickly to provide safeguards against such abduction. Laurence Singer is a Matrimonial & Family Law specialist in Amersham. There are no frills and fancy offices – just plain, good advice. Some clients are eligible for legal aid, and he also provides fixed fee options for private clients. Visit www.singerlaw.co.uk or call him on 01494 431400.

Focus on: Equity Release In the third of our ‘Focus on:’ topics, Cliff Cooper dispels the myths surrounding equity release and how unlocking the equity tied up in your home may be the right solution for you. Since March 2009, UK interest rates have been at their lowest level in the Bank of England’s history. Whilst this has been positive for borrowers, it is the retired who have been most affected as they are often reliant on fixed pensions and savings income. Combined with low interest rates, we have also experienced relatively high inflation. This has led to more enquiries from retired people seeking to raise capital from their home. Enquiries have ranged from homeowners wishing to receive a regular income from their property value to help maintain their standard of living or releasing larger lump sums to help their children get on the property ladder. Whatever ‘your’ reason for needing capital, equity release could offer a solution. In the past there has been negative press surrounding equity release, mainly concerned with the loan becoming larger than the value of the property. However, Equity Release products available today have ‘no negative equity’
guarantees built in to provide reassurance to both the home owners and their families. The amount you can borrow depends on your age and the value of your home. A typical 65 year old could borrow 25% of the value of their home. This rises to around 40% for an 80 year old. Some providers will allow you to take lump sums in stages, as and when needed, which means less interest to pay. Products and terms vary depending on the provider. Rates can either be fixed or variable. There are no repayments on an equity release loan. Interest is added to the loan and the loan is usually repayable once the property is sold. Many companies advertise equity release schemes. However, as this is usually a lifelong form of borrowing, we would recommend that you meet our specialist equity release adviser who will review the market for you and discuss the options available to help you find the most competitive loan. We also have access to special rates, not normally available directly to the public. If you or someone you know is considering equity release, contact our equity release specialist Anthony Collins for a free initial discussion at our Gerrards Cross office on (01753) 889090. We will visit you at home if preferred.

THE WINNING FORMULA FOR CREATING DREAM HOMES… FEW SKILLS ARE ACQUIRED OVERNIGHT, AND THE COMPLEX BLEND OF SKILLS AND TRADES REQUIRED TO CREATE HOMES BEFITTING OF THE PRESTIGIOUS LOCATIONS WITHIN SOUTH BUCKS AND SURREY, ARE NO EXCEPTION. LOCAL FAMILY OWNED EAB CONSTRUCTION, HAVE BEEN BUILDING THEIR TEAM AND HONING THOSE SKILLS FOR OVER 26 YEARS, AND THE RESULTS ARE THERE TO SEE.
W
hether you are planning an extension, a long overdue refurbishment, or looking to build your dream home, you are certain to need the right team with a proven experience for the whole project. Established in 1986 by Paul and Julia Berridge, EAB remains a family owned and run Beaconsfield based business. With many of their original team still on board and a second generation of the family now helping to grow the business, EAB remains true to the principles, which have earned it a reputation for constructing homes of exceptional quality, to the most exacting standards. There are now more than 50 examples of EAB homes throughout South Bucks and Surrey, and although no two are the same, they all share the quality of build, high class materials, design flair and attention to detail, which has become the hallmark of the brand. However, reputations depend not only on the quality of the product, but also on the integrity of the company

and EAB have demonstrated over the years, that they can be trusted to deliver projects on time and to budget, relying on the dedication, experience and commitment of the whole team from the Directors down. Paul and Julia take an active personal interest in each stage of every development, from the acquisition of that perfect building plot, right through the planning and design process, to the polishing of the door knobs on the way out. As a mark of quality, EAB holds one of the highest NHBC ratings available to any home builder. Creating a modern dream home, requires a unique blend of skills; ranging from the integration of the latest state of the art and environmentally green technologies, to the latest luxury kitchen and bathroom designs, all brought together within the graceful interior styling and traditional architectural elegance deserving of the area. It is the recognition of this talent, not unlike that of a conductor, bringing together an orchestra to produce a masterpiece, which has
led to so many commissions for EAB. There are two sides to the EAB new build business, including spec. building for private clients and developers, alongside the construction of their own developments, of which several are already planned for the next year. However, EAB has also remained true to the extensions and refurbishment business, on which they first built their reputation, now strengthened by countless recommendations from their clients. In this market, EAB has remained the contractor of choice for many home owners, some of which have used them on several occasions, impressed not only by the quality of work and high level of reliable personal service, but knowing they will always be on hand when needed. Completed in February this year, a project in Camp Road, Gerrards Cross, is a spectacular example of an EAB home. The new property, which incorporates 7 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms spread over 10,000 sq.ft. of stunning living accommodation,
sold off plan when the home was but a few inches out of the ground; a true testament to EAB’s reputation for design and build quality. The new property is built to an ultra luxurious specification, featuring air conditioning and fresh air ventilation, a fully integrated computer controlled lighting and sound system, and a basement with a fully fitted cinema and wine cellar, all sited within over 1.3 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds. A truly exceptional example of what this home builder is all about. So when you are driving around the area, look out for the EAB boards, you are sure to see many more of them in the future. Or, if you would like to know more about the company and what they can offer you, from a small extension to a new 15,000 sq.ft. mansion, give Paul or Julia a call, their door is always open, and they will always be around to discuss your very own dream home. www.eabconstruction.co.uk Tel: 01494

JUNE2012
New Homes Office often sells off-plan for developers. “It gives the buyer a brilliant chance to choose the items that are really expensive to change like kitchens, bathrooms and tiling to floors and walls, so we always encourage buyers to get in early” says Lance Trendall MD of the New Homes Office. He goes on to explain that it is not just the buyer who benefits “As banks have tightened up their lending criteria the sooner a builder can sign a contract on a sale, the sooner he can get funding to buy more land, which might help him build more homes each year and add significantly to his profits”. This insight is no surprise because The Land Office which sells land to developers is a sister company to New Homes Office. Lance showed examples of the homes recently sold off-plan and they ranged from new semis to a mansion in
excess of £4M, evidence to show this is happening across the whole market. If you are watching a new home being built, are interested and waiting for it to come on the market, the New Homes Office wants to help you. “Contact us and we can contact the developer and see if we can help you buy off-plan”. Fore more information about the delights of new homes and energy saving features like ‘ground source heating’ and how some NASA developments have been incorporated in insulating materials – give New Homes Office a ring on 01582 461581 or visit them at www.newhomesoffice.co.uk and register for the new homes they have got in the pipeline.
