ENJOY A CHAMPAGNE RECEPTION WITH

RORY BREMNER

R

ory Bremner, one of our best known comedians has kindly agreed to speak at the annual Autistica lunch at Cliveden on Thursday, 26th April. Rory, who is a Scottish impressionist, as well as playwright and comedian has most recently been in the spot light for his part in Strictly Come Dancing. The lunch will be held at the glittering former home of the Astor family, Cliveden, near Maidenhead on Thursday, 26th April 2012. Rory has been entertaining us for over 25 years, however, behind the comic persona of this much loved comedian is a man who has difficulty focussing, loses the thread and takes on too many tasks. Rory had always put his chaotic lifestyle down to personality, however he has recently publicly recognised that his behaviour bears many of the classic characteristics of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD. Autistica is the largest UK charity raising funds for medical research to improve diagnosis, advance new treatments and discover the causes of autism and associated disorders. The primary aim is always to bring real benefits to people with autism and their families. Autism is a life-long brain disorder that is normally diagnosed in early childhood and affects 1 in 100 people in the UK today. Lynn Hart, Head of Events for Autistica says: “We are absolutely thrilled and honoured that Rory has agreed to speak at our 7th anniversary lunch. We look forward to hearing more about his life, possibly be treated to some of his brilliant impersonations and learn what life was really like on Strictly Come Dancing! It will be a fabulous day and we are very grateful to Rory for agreeing to speak.” Guests can enjoy a champagne reception on the magnificent terrace with views over the River Thames, a delightful 3 course lunch, with wine and tea or coffee. The ticket price is £80 per person. After the lunch programme, a short Butlers Talk will take place and then guests can spend the day strolling around the stunning 400 acres of National Trust grounds or relaxing in the luxurious surroundings of Cliveden. To find out more details about the lunch and to purchase tickets, please go direct to the website www.autistica.org.uk or contact Lynn at lynn.hart@autistica.org.uk or ring 01491 411569

ith over 98% of British households buying cheese, and a staggering 700,000 tonnes (including cottage cheese and fromage frais) consumed on average each year, the UK is clearly a nation of Cheese Lovers. And so what better place to visit, than the UK’s top event for Cheese Lovers, which will take place on Saturday 14th April at The Market Place, Old Beaconsfield? Although Cheddar is the nation’s favourite cheese, this event will offer visitors so much more! An opportunity to taste, learn about, and buy new and unusual cheeses, as well as artisan and traditional favourites, the Cheese Makers Market will offer cheeses from over 70 different producers, showcasing both British and Continental varieties. In association with Premier Cheese (a specialist supplier to top restaurants around the UK including Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons and Tom Aikens) and La Cave à Fromage (a wonderful cheese retailer with shops in London and Brighton offering over 200 different varieties) this will mark the second year of the market. In 2011, the market was opened by Alain Roux, Chef Patron of the renowned Waterside Inn. With over 2,000 visitors, last year’s participants included noted producers such as Cooleeney from Ireland, Thornby Moor from Cumbria, Bath Soft Cheese, Cornish Blue Cheese, Errington from Scotland, Isle of

Mull Cheddar and Innes Cheese from Staffordshire. This year, Eric Charriaux and Amnon Paldi, Directors of both Premier Cheese and La Cave à Fromage, will be making The Cheese Makers Market even bigger and better, with more producers (hailing as far as Portugal, Spain, France and Italy), cheese and wine matching tutorials hosted by renowned wine journalist Tim Atkin, workshops and chef demonstrations. The Cheese Makers Market will also have a few carefully selected stands selling cheese macaroons, cheese ice cream, cheese making kits, cheese accessories, wine, cider, beer, bread and hot food made with

cheese. Look out for the pop-up restaurant sponsored by Premier Cheese and La Cave a Fromage, which will offer delicious fine cheese selections served with bread and wine, or a selection of fine cheese and charcuterie platters or raclette served with or without wine. Cold storage will be available for visitors wanting to purchase and keep their

shopping chilled while they continue to browse and enjoy their time at Old Beaconsfield. Amnon Paldi said: “Although Cheese is our business, it is also our passion and hobby! We want to give visitors the opportunity to not only taste cheeses that may be new to them, but also allow them to meet the Cheese Makers who may produce some of their favourites. The Cheese Makers Market will be a must visit for not only

die hard cheese lovers, but also for consumers looking for a one stop for everything relating to Cheese and Dairy.” The Cheese Makers Market will be on Saturday 14th April 2012, from 9.30am to 5.30pm. The location is The Market Place, Old Beaconsfield, HP9 2JN Car parking is available, and there is a fast train service from London Marylebone to Beaconsfield. The 2012 Xchanging

T

he 158th Boat Race on 7th April will see oarsmen of six different nationalities competing, as the older, more internationally experienced crew from Oxford take on the younger, heavier Cambridge eight. This year will be the first time for Cambridge and only the second time ever in Boat Race history that the crew will feature only one British oarsman, returning Blue undergraduate Mike Thorp. The only other time this has happened was in 2007 when Oxford President Robin Ejsmond-Frey was the sole Brit in the crew. The rest of the Light Blue crew this year is made up of three Americans, two Australians, and individuals from Germany and New Zealand,; and they will be coxed by British first year

20

MARCH2012

BOAT RACE undergraduate, Ed Bosson. The crew from Oxford will include three former Lightweight rowers, and is made up of five Brits, two Americans, and individuals from Germany and the Netherlands. The Dark Blues will be coxed by Brit Zoe De Toledo. She will be the first woman to cox Oxford since 2000. Four of the athletes competing this year learnt to row at their colleges at Oxford or Cambridge. Alex Woods and Dan Harvey for Oxford, and Alex Ross

and Moritz Schramm for Cambridge all noviced in their first years at the universities. The idea for a rowing race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge came from two friends Charles Merivale, a student at Cambridge, and his Harrow school friend Charles Wordsworth (nephew of the poet William Wordsworth), who was at Oxford. On 12 March 1829, Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford and thus the tradition was born which has continued to the present day,

where the loser of the previous year’s race challenges the opposition to a re-match. The first Boat Race took place at Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire and contemporary newspapers report crowds of twenty thousand travelled to watch. The race was stopped soon after the start and, following the restart, Oxford were clear winners. Cambridge wore pink, the colour of Lady Margaret Boat Club (of St. Johns College), who their captain and two other crew members rowed for. Oxford have always worn dark blue. The event was such a resounding success that the townspeople later decided to organise a regatta of their own which duly became Henley Royal Regatta. After the first year, the early Boat Races took place at Westminster in London, but by 1845, when

p20_BUCKS_BOATRACE__ 19/03/2012 16:50 Page 2

LO CAL EVENT S

Westminster had become too crowded, the Boat Race moved six miles up-stream to the then country village of Putney. In 1856 the race became an annual event (excepting only the war years). The Modern Boat Race still runs along the same lines but has now become a major international sporting occasion drawing millions of viewers from around the world. The Boat Race course is marked by three classic bends, two in favour of the Middlesex station, on the north bank of the Thames, while the third favours the crew drawn on the opposite Surrey station. In spite of these bends the course is theoretically fair - the start and finish lines are exactly parallel, and in the unlikely event of the crews staying level throughout the race, they will both have covered the magic Boat Race distance of exactly 4 miles 374 yards. The start of the race is marked by the University stone, a few hundred yards upstream from Putney Road Bridge and for the first quarter of a mile, as the crews pass the historic boathouses of Putney Embankment. The Finish Line is just a few yards downstream from Chiswick Road bridge and here the crowds on Race Day are as densely packed as those near the Start. What those crowds witness as the crews cross the Line is the ecstasy of the victors and the despair of the losing crew. On Race Day up to 250,000 spectators crowd the banks of the Thames from Putney to Mortlake to witness the action. Enjoy the festival atmosphere of the Boat Race by watching for free from one of the many vantage points along the course. You should be able to find a place to watch on either side of the river along the full length of the course, but particular areas to note are: Putney Bridge, Putney Embankment and Bishops Park (at the

How to get there... BUS

start); Hammersmith and Barnes (mid-course); Dukes Meadows and Chiswick Bridge (at the finish). Please do not drive to the race if you have a choice. Parking is limited and for non-residents on the day of The Boat race it is extremely hard to find. You risk listening to the race on the car radio instead of seeing it from the riverbank! There are large screens at Bishops Park, Fulham and Furnival Gardens, Hammersmith which mean you will be able to watch the whole Race before and after the crews have passed. The parks will also feature food outlets, beer stands and merchandising stalls. BBC1 will be showing the Boat Race live including build up from around 2pm, visit www.bbc.co.uk for more information

For the start in Putney, the number 14 bus from Tottenham Court Road and the 22 from Piccadilly Circus will both take you across Putney Bridge. For the middle part of the Race at the Surrey Bend, the number 9 bus from Charing Cross or the 10 from Euston and Oxford Circus or the 27 from Camden will take you to Hammersmith - close to the riverside at Chiswick Malls. For the Finish in Mortlake, take the 209 or 190 from Hammersmith. Bus routes are shown on all maps.

TRAIN For the start in Putney, Putney railway station is on Putney High Street at the Upper Richmond Road. Trains arrive from Clapham Junction, Waterloo or Victoria West of Putney, the line divides at the next stop Barnes Station - just over a mile away - going towards Barnes Bridge where the finishing stretch begins, or towards Mortlake for the Finish. Stations are shown in all maps.

LONDON UNDERGROUND For the Start, East Putney is south of the river and Putney Bridge is north Putney Bridge is the closest station. Ravenscourt Park and Hammersmith are closest to the viewing areas at Chiswick Mall. Stations are shown on all maps. Hammersmith station is accessible for wheelchairs but the Putney tube stations are not. For more information: www.theboatrace.org

O U T Charitable Trust has awarded more than £35 million in grants to develop sport and recreation facilities in the capital and other areas in the country where the London marathon stages events.

IL 2012 SUNDAY 22ND APR

S THE 2012

VIRGIN LONDON MARATHON

ince the first ever London Marathon on 29th March 1981, the race has grown in size, stature and popularity ever since. Now established among the major events in the sporting calendar, the London Marathon is shown on television in more that 150 countries around the world. As a fundraising event, there is no race in the world that comes close to the London Marathon. Runners in the 2011 Virgin London Marathon set yet another record figure for charity fund raising when they collected £51.8 million for good causes at last year’s race , confirming the London Marathon as the largest annual one-day fund raising event in the world. With a similar total expected from this year’s runners, the total raised over 30 years since the first race in 1981 will reach more than £500 million! An iconic image of the event is the thousands of runners traipsing the streets to raise money for charity, many in fancy dress, hoping to stand out as a rhino, football mascot, giant tree, or escaped convict. More than three quarters of competitors now run for a good cause and a third of all entry places are offered by charitable organisations. In addition, over the last three decades the London Marathon

28

MARCH2012

The elite races start at 9am for women and 9.45am for men, with the London Marathon wheelchair races beginning at 9.20am and the mass race at 9.45am. David Weir and Amanda McGrory will defend their Virgin London Marathon titles against the strongest fields ever assembled for the elite wheelchair races. Weir is aiming to match the six London Marathon titles won by British Paralympic legend Dame Tanni Grey -Thompson when he makes his 12th consecutive appearance in the race. Celebrities lined up to take part this year include: chefs Michel Roux, Gordon Ramsey, Tom Aiken and Tony Tobin, Will Young, DJ's Neil 'Doctor ' Fox, Mark Goodier and Charlie Hedges, Callum Best, Ben Fogle, Katie Price, Nadia Sawahla and EastEnders stars Danielle Harold and Neil McDermott. Some advice to those that wish to go along and support and cheer on the brave runners, many roads are closed on race day, so the best way to get around is using the London Underground, South Eastern and Docklands Light Railway (DLR), who lay on extra services especially. Remember, the trains will be busy all day – expect it to be like rush hour. You’ll probably have to queue at some stations and the tube lines may be forced to shut temporarily throughout the day to help ease the crowds.

T

he vibrant and internationally renowned London Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month's event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their latest collections. A constantly buzzing key event for those who haven't got the patience to wait until the latest fashion designs and stylish fashion trends make it into the fashion magazines. The magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers' and fashion stylists' cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. The allure of the show is exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe. It's a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. The world watches as fashion history is made. While we are all thinking about our autumn wardrobes and digging out our winter jumpers in an attempt to stay warm, designers were showcasing this year’s Autumn/Winter collections during last month's London Fashion Week. The first lady of British fashion today made her appearance at this season's London Fashion Week. Samantha Cameron graced the front row of the Christopher Kane catwalk show at central London's One New Change shopping centre. The Prime Minister's wife, who is ambassador to the British Fashion Council (BFC), was spotted wearing a Joseph trouser suit and a Jonathan Saunders green shirt. She also sported a pair of wedged black high shoes showing off a small blue tattoo on her right ankle. Mrs Cameron chatted with BFC executives before watching the autumn/winter collection. So who else was taking the front row seats at London Fashion Week? Celebrities from the worlds of sport, music and film watched the Burberry Prorsum show at Kensington Gardens in London. Rap star Will.i.am was there and Hollywood actress Kate Bosworth was over from her native Los Angeles for the event. Former 'Strictly Come Dancing' contestant

Holly Valance attended with her property tycoon fiancé Nick Candy. Singer Will Young wrapped up in a cosy cashmere knit.Boxer Amir Khan made up the sportspeople on the front row......along with former athlete Denise Lewis. Stella McCartney’s show proved her one of the most influential designers in the world. Not many had a guest list like this one: Rihanna, Kate Moss, Jamie Hince, Amber Valletta, Shalom Harlow – and that was just the seating plan of Stella’s own table. Much table hopping went on as Yasmin Le Bon chatted to Paul Whitehouse, Minnie Driver caught up with Mario Testino, Richard E Grant met Alison Mosshart, Jo Whiley caught up with British singing sensation Katy B – it was a case of who wasn’t there. Topshop Unique always draws a celebrity-packed front row. Alexa Chung looked casual but stylish in classic navy jeans and coat. Girls Aloud singer, make-up entrepreneur and dedicated follower of fashion Nicola Roberts also attended the Topshop Unique show. Actress and designer Sadie Frost also made an appearance at the Vivienne Westwood Red Label show looking summery in salmon pink. At Aquascutumn, singer Dionne Bromfield mingled with One Directon's Harry Styles , and comedian James Corden and his fiancé Julia Carey . Alexa Chung and Pixie Geldof supported their friend Henry Holland by sitting in on his House of Holland show. So what we will be wearing this Autumn and Winter? Here are just a selection of those names that hit the catwalk! BURBERRY Over 1500 guests attended in London's Hyde Park. On show included bellow pocket panelled trench coats, cropped tailored bomber jackets, oversize waxed field jackets, cinched riding jackets, down-filled dress coats, slouchy T-shirts, pocket pencil skirts and tiered fringed dresses. Fabrics included traditional British tweed wool, check silk and angora wool coating, plush velvet and floral print silk faille. And introducing the Burberry Orchard Bag and the Burberry Field Boot (suede lace-up ankle boots, brogue lace-up ankle boots, moccasin -inspired ankle boots) tweed peak caps, tubular waist belts and cuff length gloves. Colours were Trench, honey, dark camel, pebble, white, olive green, laurel green, pewter, granite blue, gingerwood, black olive, malachite, blackcurrant, chartreuse yellow, and black. Burberry created an immersive physical and digital British weather experience with

an interior and exterior special-effects rainstorm surrounding the entire show space, as part of the show finale. AQUASCUTUM AUTUMN/WINTER 2012 The Aquascutum woman is provocative, sexy and a touch dangerous. Joanna Sykes explores iconic British interiors and architectural profiles. Form, rich textures, detailed cornicing, chiselled angles and a play on light and shadow drive the story. A modern British palette of oxblood, racing green and winter white is accented with dolphin grey, champagne and olive. Tonality is key; the silhouette is sleek. The overall proposal and colour palette are underpinned with crisp geometric shirts in black and white. Luxurious bonded wools, new variations on English tweeds and technical jerseys sit well alongside contemporary leather combinations, ironed shearling and fluid silks. Taking inspiration from Aquascutum’s heritage, the traditional epaulette is made modern and the silhouette enhanced with bold cage-like elements. Sharp cutting defines a new sexy kick that features in signature outerwear and tailored separates. For eveningwear the architectural details are softened in pale and dark silks, flowing vertically down the form. Aquascutum was founded in 1851 by high quality tailor John Emary with the mission to provide stylish protection from the unpredictable British weather. Aquascutum has been part of London city life for nearly 160 years. JASPER CONRAN AUTUMN/WINTER 2012 Tailored precision enables a steely determination. Strict yet not uptight. Curves, pleats and gathers soften the line. A sinuous flow defines the bust, the waist, the hip. The leg smart in understated colour, the shoe with a meaningful point. Cashmere, tweed, flannel and faille give texture, a softened line and subtle sheen. Tones of tan, cocoa, stormy grey and uncompromising black injected with shots of molten metal. Half belts, tabs, bows and buttons set the standard. Silks in muted pinks and silvered greys reveal a glimpse of feathers, fringing and glittering gems for cut-to-the-knee finery. The final glance in matt black jersey – composed and cut to the floor. PAUL SMITH This season Paul Smith captures the heydays of highborn elegance and starry glamour. Embracing the tuxedo and smoking suit, the collection offers a sumptuous fusion of traditional tailoring with a rich melange of palettes and textures. Highlighting the contrasting feel and finish of heritage cloths and yarns, barley checks and luxurious Prince of Wales motifs are layered alongside two-tone flannels, mohair and merino wools. Silhouettes maintain a simple, contemporary ease with oversized outerwear shapes and heavily pleated trousers which enhance Paul Smith’s modern, masculine aesthetic for women. Sensual silk dresses, to the floor and heavy with crystals, add decadence. Sheer blouses with contrasting wing collars are worn with crushed velvet skinny pants and jackets. The result is a chic collection in luxurious knits and feminine colours, but with an undercurrent of defiance in the detailing. JOHN ROCHA Drawing inspiration from beloved memories of Hong Kong’s Happy Valley Race Track and the patterns and colours of Sean Scully’s canvasses, the Autumn/Winter 2012 Collection continues John Rocha’s exploration of surface and silhouette through the things he loves most. John’s palette is grounded in black in all it’s depths, through silk georgette, lace and devore, felted wools, cashmere, marabou and Mongolian lambskin. MENSWEAR DAY AUTUMN/WINTER 2012 Menswear Day autumn/winter 2012 captured the essence of the capital's menswear talent including the eight designers under the NEWGEN MEN umbrella, the dynamic NEWGEN MEN & Fashion East installations and the tailoring of the Savile Row presentations. Wednesday 22nd February was a highlight of London Fashion Week, with 9 on schedule catwalk shows and 3 presentations. The menswear showrooms returned for a second season, located on the first floor of Somerset House. Six menswear designers showcased in this dedicated space including Baartmanns & Siegel, Junky Styling, Mr Start, Omar Kashoura, Palmer // Harding and Serdar Uzuntas. NEWGEN MEN began in February 2009, building on TOPMAN and Fashion East’s successful MAN initiative. It has since become instrumental in raising the profile of emerging British designers using the dedicated Menswear Day at London Fashion Week as a showcasing platform. It isn't so different from the women's shows – there's the clothes, the models, the celebrities – but it is more relaxed.

Embracing the period’s architecture, Antonio was influenced by Sicilian sculptor, Giacomo Serpotta and the more recent British artist, Rachel Kneebone. s nail polish sales continue to rise, (surpassing lipsticks as our go-to beauty buy) find out what colours you need to be sporting this Spring/Summer to be bang on trend.

The new season nail colours are in, and nowadays they are as lusted after as the new season it-bag or the latest hemline. We ladies know that the best way to work a trend without having to pay a fortune is to fancy up our fingernails. Nail colours for the Spring/Summer 2012 seem to fall into two strict camps: neon or nude. First up, leading the trend in an ever brilliant mini boxset is Nails Inc. The New Neon & Nude Collection (£22, www.nailsinc.com) brings together three of their best selling nude classics paired with three brand new ultra-bright neons. From the muted mushroom of Porchester Square to the Coral neon of Portobello, this mini polish set is a great way to combine a nude base with neon tips for a colourful unique 'french manicure' look. With nude being the must have nail shade, there are an array of neutral colours popping up to tame our talons. Get a colour that is as close to your natural skin tone as possible for the chicest results. For an affordable take on the trend, Andrea Fullerton Nail Boutique has created 'Matthew' (£4.99, Superdrug stores nationwide). This is a nude baby pink shimmer following on from the desert island texture inspired nails she created at the namesake Matthew Williamson SS '11 show. And if the nude shade you're wearing doesn't excite you as much as the fresh brights, simply press Andrea's new Pearl Nail Studs (£5.99) into semi-wet varnish for timeless elegance. Celebrity favourite OPI also have a library of natural shades (£11, www.lenawhite.co.uk). Their latest softshades collection is inspired by the world renowned New York City Ballet featuring five pretty nude pastel shades to take you from office-chic to stylish evening glamour. 'Barre My Soul' is a beautiful sheer hint of light barely-there caramel and is extremely flattering on paler skin tones. If you want to channel Kate Middleton's subtle naked nail glamour like she did at her wedding day last April, chemical free nail brand Zoya (£11, 01753573423) have brought out ultra long-lasting ladylike muted shades, like the wearable milky lilac Kendal and a silver based soft grey called Carey.

To carry off the pastel colours that have been introduced to steer us seamlessly from winter to spring, Mavala Nail Ambassador Jenni Draper recommends the style be altogether more feminine. "The nail shape should be shorter, round and elegant", she says. I predict that the spearmint green sherbet shade of 'Pistachio' from Mavala's Delicious collection (£4.30 each, 01732459412) to be a huge hit to add a hint of playfulness to your look. ORLY's new 'Cool Romance' Collection (£9.25 each, www.orlybeauty.co.uk) consists of 6 delicate, sophisticated hues that bridge that gap between winter's deep berry lacquers and summer's bright fluoro's. 'Prelude to a Kiss' is a dainty yet dusky pink, which has great staying power and good opaque coverage. The neon trend is almost certainly the result of the big beauty houses. This season's Chanel Le Vernis Spring Collection (£17.50 each, Harrods) is comprised of a trilogy, whose names list the months associated with fine weather. April is a highly luminous wild berry shade, May instill's happiness with an intense pink and June offers us a foretaste of summer with a pastel apricot. Fresh fruit sorbet colours dominate at Yves Saint Laurent with the limited edition N°8 Manucure Couture Duo (£28, available nationwide) comprising of an iridescent pink and coral. Leighton Denny's vibrant and violet 'Maroon Me Knot' (£11, John Lewis) from the Castaway collection is reminiscent of the eye popping tropical colours inspired by the recent Diane von Furstenberg collections; whilst ciaté paint pot in 'pom pom' (£9, www.ciate.co.uk) provides the powerful orange seen on the SS12 Prada and Jonathan Saunders shows. The highly saturated bubblegum pink pigment of Pink Crush (£25, 08700342566) by Fashion designer Tom Ford, is one of my new covetable shades. The intense glossiness of Pink Crush is a definite style statement with Ford commenting that "Perfectly lacquered nails complete your look, whether you have one signature look or you love to transform yourself with color". New silicon-free balm textured Elemis Pro-Radiance Hand & Nail Cream (£22, www.timetospa.co.uk) formulated with Omega 7 and Virgin Plum oil, is the perfect final addition to your manicure routine. It will ensure that you can pull off either the neon or nude talon trend successfully with hydrated hands ■

Q&A

WITH THE AWARD WINNING DENTIST

DR SHAMEEK POPAT

Q

Recently I have heard about something called All-on-4™ Implant technique. I am aware what an Implant is, but what is this technique about?

A

The revolutionary and life changing All-on-4™ technique provides a major alternative to traditional dentures and implants. This very successful procedure allows patients to receive a fully fixed, non-removable arch of teeth all in one day. IT MEANS WE CAN;

Remove any failing teeth (if needed) Place the implants Make a fixed provisional bridge WE CAN TREAT:

Loose dentures Failing crown and bridgework Patients with severe bone loss Patients with severe gum disease The All-on-4™ procedure is the closest solution to natural teeth. The technique takes advantage of the dense bone at the front of the jaw, and uses just four implants, rather than the traditional six to ten. This technique allows patients to obtain fixed, non removable arches of teeth without the need for bone grafting. THE OTHER BENEFITS TO THE ALL-ON-4™ PROCEDURE:

Help prevent further bone loss Restores mouth functionality, drastically improving the ability to eat all sorts of food Is a complete replacement for dentures Improves facial structure by preventing sagging or hollow cheeks Minimal recovery time with very little discomfort or pain Aids the prevention of further bone loss Increases self confidence and quality of life It is very important to replace missing teeth to not only preserve

the functionality of your mouth, but also to allow you to chew food easily. If you are missing most or all of your teeth, there is a chance your cheeks may begin to sag inwards and make you appear older than you are. Implants like All-on-4™ are increasingly preferred over removable dentures because they are a permanent solution to tooth loss. The titanium implants fuse with the jaw bone for enduring stability so there is no need to worry about your dentures slipping or having to replace them. Once you have been determined as a suitable patient, you will have a CT scan of your mouth to test bone quality. If you have any teeth that have a bad level of decay or about to be lost, they will be removed. In order to place the four implants, the dentist will make small incisions in your gum while under local anaesthetic. The jaw bone will then be drilled into to create small hollows within which the implants sit. The implants are then places into the gum and the incisions stitched up. In time, osseointegration will occur, and the implants will fuse with your jaw bone. This provides maximum stability for the implants. Two implants are then placed in the front of mouth, in order to take advantage of the dense jaw bone existing there. The two implants that are placed at the posterior of the mouth are fitted at a 45 degree angles. This allows maximum stability and takes full advantage of the stronger bone that exists at the front of the jaw. The dental bridge, which is crowns that support an arch of replacement teeth, is then attached to the socket of the implants. Bridges can be attached on the same day that the implants are inserted, and the patient can leave the practice with a full set of teeth intact and ready to use. This technique is obviously very specialised and I would only recommend you consider this with a highly qualified and skilled Implant Surgeon who will then assess if this treatment option is suitable for you. Best Regards, Shameek

on the thickness, a wider removal of the skin around a malignant melanoma is usually recommended. Malignant melanomas that are less than 1mm thick have a greater than 95% chance of causing no further trouble. Another way of measuring the thickness of a malignant melanoma is the Clarke’s level. This relates to which layers of the skin the malignant melanoma has penetrated. This is less accurate that the Breslow thickness in predicting the likelihood of further problems. MELANOMA SPECIALISTS

As with other cancers, it is important that people

Skin Check WHAT’S IN A MOLE?

A mole (or naevus) is the term applied to any spot on the skin. Many moles are coloured (pigmented) but some have no colour. WHAT IS A MELANOMA?

A melanoma is the medical term for a mole. This simply means any pigmented or non pigmented lesion; it does not mean a cancer. Although most moles are brown, they can vary from flesh coloured through yellow and blue, to black. Moles can be many different shapes and can be single or multiple, on almost any part of the body. Everybody has moles; some people have more than others. Most moles have formed before the age of 20, but some people can get new moles well into their 30s or beyond. MELANOMA SYMPTOMS

The vast majority of moles remain benign (non cancerous) and never cause any trouble. However, a small number may change with time and have the potential to become a cancerous mole (malignant melanoma). If a mole changes in size or colour, if it itches, 50

MELANOMA TREATMENT

It is important that moles are removed properly so they can be thoroughly examined. It is usually recommended that moles are removed with an ellipse of normal skin around them, aiming for a 2mm margin of clearance. Most of the moles that are removed turn out to be fine. Pathologists (doctors who examine tissues under the microscope) use different terms for benign moles. They may be junctional, juvenile, blue, compound, dermal or intradermal. All these are descriptions for benign (non cancerous) moles. Some will be what are called dysplastic moles. These are thought to be precancerous moles that have the potential to become malignant melanomas

if they are left. Although many of them may not turn cancerous it is impossible to tell and so they should probably be removed. The next stage after the dysplastic mole is the malignant melanoma in situ. This has just turned cancerous, but does not have the ability to spread. Like the dysplastic mole, it is cured by removing it properly. Malignant melanomas proper have the ability to spread around the body, so the earlier they are caught the better. It seems that the most important factor in determining whether a malignant melanoma may have spread or not is its thickness. This is measured in mm and is called the Breslow thickness. Depending

who have had malignant melanomas are treated by a team of specialists. Melanoma specialists include a dermatologist, a surgeon and perhaps a plastic surgeon, an oncologist and a pathologist. Malignant melanoma risk factors Some groups of people should be regularly checked for abnormal moles. These include people who have had a malignant melanoma before, or there is a family history of it, fair skinned, fair haired or red haired people and those with a large number of moles, as well as those who have had considerable sun exposure in their lives, particularly with episodes of severe sunburn when they were young.  Be inspired by the model hair and make-up looks at London Fashion Week. Lisa Haynes goes backstage to discover the emerging beauty trends. Fashion Week isn't just about showcasing new clothing. Techniques for make-up, hair, nails and skin are all weaved seamlessly together to emphasise a designer's stylish vision. "Every aspect needs to be considered as even the final touches have a big impact," says fashion designer Roksanda Ilincic. Mix all those final touches together and next season's trends start to take shape. Yes, there were statement mohawks, blue face paint and cartoon character nail art but amidst the backstage craziness were also some beautiful looks to try at home.

Time to get a sneak preview for next season.

On faces, it was about bringing the outdoors indoors to the dressing table. There were ski girl-inspired looks at Margaret Howell, Tour de France cycle chic at House of Holland and Dr Zhivago-style glows at Temperley, achieved with a flush of colour to the cheekbones, where the elements would naturally hit the face. MAC's Lucia Pica says: "They're healthy and glowing girls sporty but in a more sophisticated way."

New season tip: Choose rouge for lips or cheeks.

"We created a shape that was masculine from the front, yet feminine at the back," explains Peter Gray, who created a definite side parting for Paul Smith's show. Moving on from the must-have show pony of spring/summer, ponytails have a new sideways twist. They can be low and elegant, nipped to the nape of the neck, as seen as Margaret Howell, or high and swinging a la Ashish, who wanted an urban, messy ponytail.

New season tip: Time for a one-sided view on hair.

NAIL ART Forget the pale and interesting look, backstage nail teams were feeling blue. The fashionable hue of choice backstage, one of Kate Middleton's designer favourites, Erdem, opted for a bright royal blue to co-ordinate with his modern tweeds and prints, while at Holly Fulton chalky cream teal was the shade of choice. Her ocean-inspired blue was mixed to appear as if models were emerging straight from the sea, with long 'ovaletto' shape and a glossy finish to match the models' dewy skin and wet-look hair. The House of Holland show used the collection's houndstooth for print nail art inspiration. Nail artist Sophy Robson created houndstooth transfers which were placed over electric blue using Leighton Denny Expert Nails colours.

New season tip: Stand by for a blue talon takeover.

SKIN CHIC The catwalks may have been showcasing autumn/winter collections but glowing limbs were still a must for the models. At Roksanda Ilincic, sepia-tone skin was the goal. St Tropez's skin finishing expert, Nichola Joss, took her inspiration from the collection, inspired by the Forties and sepia photographs, to create a soft focus glow on the skin. "The models skin is pale but with a real warmth to it - just like that of a sepia photograph. I wanted to give it a flushed terracotta tone," Joss said. At Erdem, the look was focused on matching skin colour to clothing - dubbed the 'Amethyst Tan'. Models limbs were drenched with a combination of St Tropez's Body Butter and Violet Skin Illuminator to complement the rich palette of navy, red and pink.

New season tip: Match your tan to your wardrobe.

TRIED & TESTED Forget matte, give your nails the wet look treatment. Our testers try three super-shiny polish top coats: 17 Nail Xtras Double Gloss Top Coat, £3.99 (Boots) With a slim brush I felt like I needed quite a lot of polish to cover each nail but the end result is hard-wearing with a reflective gloss. 3/5 Rimmel London Pro Super Wear Ultra Shine Topcoat, £4.59 (www.rimmellondon.com) The wide 'maxi' brush makes for a quick application. The 10-day chip resistance is impressive but I was underwhelmed by the 3D shine once it had fully dried. 3/5 Save the Nail Wet Look Top Coat, £6.95 (Boots) This polish packs a shiny punch with diamond powder particles, which makes for a wet finish, even when dry. It also looked fab on natural nails for a speedy gloss look. 4/5

njoying good health now and in the future comes from good habits and food choices. Therefore, healthy eating for kids is essential. Children who are trained to eat healthy foods at an early age are more likely to choose healthy food for a lifetime.

As parents we provide the role model for our children. Therefore, if we want our children to develop healthy eating habits we need to start with ourselves. If both parents enjoy eating nutritious foods, the chances are that their children will copy their good food habits. Educating ourselves regarding good nutrition is a major part of good parenting. We can help children to have more control over their own health and to lead healthier, happier and more productive lives. They need to know about the effects that food has on their health, they need to know that they have the power to make wise choices and that they can contribute to the prevention of disease.

56

Creating a nutritional home is the first step to ensure the wellbeing of children. Kids will eventually see that consistent daily food choices mean healthy bodies and a happy life. As children grow up they will develop an attitude of wellbeing. Children seem to be the target group for the promotion of junk foods. Processed foods, promoted to children via TV advertising, offer free toys or use cartoon characters to ensure kids pester their parents to buy these foods and food companies continually use these tactics to promote sales of their products. These processed foods include baked foods, snacks, chocolate, burgers, pizzas, cookies and carbonated drinks. Processed foods contain high levels of saturated fat, refined flour, sugar and salt which contribute to an unhealthy diet and are detrimental to a child’s health.

Modern foods are produced with artificial fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and other chemicals. Filling up on processed and overcooked foods that provide little nutritional benefits can lead to discomfort, depression and ultimately diseases that affect our society today.

nutrients. For good health and optimum mind power a child needs a variety of foods. The body needs carbohydrates, protein and fat, as well as vitamins, minerals, enzymes and water. Nature has given us a wide variety of plant foods that are rich in nutritional content. Unprocessed food is the key to health and longevity.

PROCESSED FOODS AND CHEMICAL ADDITIVES have upset our entire chemistry, resulting in health complications, food intolerances, sensitivities and allergies, for example:

TOP TIPS TO INSPIRE YOUR CHILDREN TO BECOME HEALTHIER Take kids shopping and let them select nutritious foods. Let your children help out in the kitchen and let them wash fruits and vegetables. Use simple recipes and allow them to follow instructions alongside you. Encourage children to make simple fruit and vegetable dishes (for example: raw vegetable sticks, fruit kebabs, fruit salads, healthy dips, juices, dairy-free milkshakes and desserts). Demonstrate the positive value of antioxidants in fruits, vegetables, beans, seeds and nuts and how they contribute to good health — energy boosters and mood elevators. Introduce new food every week; have taste-test samples. Discuss with them how you are going to eliminate junk foods and substitute with nutritious dishes. Praise your children for their contribution — children will learn to develop confidence in their abilities.

SATURATED FAT Obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, fatigue and learning disturbances. SALT High blood pressure, water retention and kidney stones. REFINED FLOUR Immune deficiency, low energy, chronic fatigue and parasites. ARTIFICIAL FLAVOURINGS AND COLOURINGS Allergies, skin reactions, eczema and asthma. SUGAR AND SWEETENERS: Dental cavities, diabetes, hyperactivity, mood swings, tantrums and aggression. When we begin to realise the health risks associated with these processed foods and food additives we start to eliminate them and opt for more wholesome alternatives that taste delicious and do not put our health at risk. Body and brain functions are influenced by a wide range of

Raising healthy children does not need to be time-consuming. Daily smoothies and juices are a fantastic source of nutrients when you have little time to prepare food. Juicing at home is the key to giving the entire family a radiant and energetic life ■

ell what an interesting month since I last addressed these pages. I’ve had more enquiries from readers than the previous three months put together, which reminded me of the writing load I used to have when I was the ‘Silver Editor’ of an American newspaper called “The Antiques Monthly” and questions with photographs poured in from all over the States. Anyway the recent batch of enquiries was so diverse that thought I would print just a couple for you to illustrate the range of items that people have. The first is one of a pair of vases, each bearing the stamp of Carlton Ware, but the owner could find no further information. The vases are extremely - what is known in the trade as - ‘showy’; lots of shape and lots of colour with big classical scenes on the front and back. This was because the Victorians of the late 19th century loved mirrors over their fireplaces, at the back of sideboards and anywhere else they could stand ornaments, and so they had to be decorated on the reverse side as well as the front. This practice did not cease with the end of the century and continued well into the next, when in fact these vases were made. Carlton Ware was one of many products from the company formed by the partnership of Laurence Arthur Birks and Adolphus Joseph Rawlins in the 1890’s, which continued until1932 at the Vine Pottery at Stoke. The company was still in production in 1957. They made china in addition to their earthenware products the latter of which these vases are a fine example. For something so decorative it is surprising that these wares do not have great commercial value. They were made in vast number and, being available to the masses of middle class families were considered ‘old fashioned’ by the following two generations, and are only just being collected. The name of the country of

58

origin marked on any item will indicate that it was made after 1891 when the ‘McKinley Tariff ’ as it was known was brought in by the future President of The United States of America as an import protectionist measure. The addition of the words ‘Made In’ will indicate after 1904. There are very few rules in the antiques business but that is certainly one of them. Dates inscribed, engraved or carved on antiques can be very difficult to authenticate; the typeface and quality of writing are key factors. It is too complicated to put briefly but a guide rather than a rule is to visit and take note in a cemetery of the dates and lettering on gravestones. It was rarely if ever done to put old-fashioned lettering on a headstone, and of course a date before the lettering was invented would be equally wrong. The forms of decorative borders and frames, particularly around crests, coats of arms and presentation inscriptions are also indicative of age. The Victorians

loved to mix designs and periods when they tried to create revival pieces of an earlier period. But sometimes even this can defeat an old hand like me. A case in point is the slope-top box illustrated. These boxes are often referred to as bible boxes but that more correctly describes a straightforward box with no slope. This is actually a desk, of a type not much referred to before the Tudor period but universally popular by the end of the 17th century when more people could read and write. One early record is in an inventory of Sir William More of Loseley who owned ‘a deske (sic) of chestnut tree’ and ‘another little deske to wryte (sic) on. The latter was valued at 3d by the valuer. Now part of the carving on this desk is a mystery to me. The scrolling designs is common enough and typical of the mid to late 17th century which would tie up nicely with the construction and the iron work and it is good Baltic oak, the stable timber for good solid furniture at the time. But to my knowledge the diagonal lines do not fit to any known pattern in the UK, nor am I sure if they are contemporary. It could be Scandinavian or even more romantically, it could have been done by a sailor on board ship after he had visited some exotic island and picked up some native designs. So I’m stuck on this one and ask if anyone recognises this pattern, and has the sort of ”Oh I know where that came from” reaction please write

and tell me. One of the most interesting pieces of American silver I have ever dealt with came to light after an enquiry from an English reader of ‘The Antiques Monthly’. It was a large bowl with two cast side handles and a presentation inscription over a coat of arms. It read ”Valentine and Louisa D. Mott”. Back in the 1970’s this meant nothing to me and there was no Google, but the lettering of the inscription was typical of the 1850’s, so we had an approximate date. Underneath were the stamps ‘Jones,Ball & Co’ ‘Boston’ and most interestingly ‘Pure Silver Coin’. Armed with this I flew to my copy of Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers by the delightfully named Dorothy T. Rainwater. Here I discovered that Jones and Ball registered their mark in 1852 as part of a huge conglomerate with the equally engaging name of ‘Shreve, Crump and Low, Co. Inc. They certainly know how to come up with catchy titles. So now we have date, maker and material. But who were Valentine and Louisa Mott? The shield of the coat of arms was divided in three; in one third was a hand with a scalpel, another was a ribbon around a tube and the last was a crescent. The latter is a device with many meanings but the scalpel was a clue. By now I’m sure the suspense is almost too much to bear so I will cut to the chase and tell you that via The New York Historical Society, Rosary College Library, Chicago and the Milwaukee Museum of Fine Art I found that Valentine Mott was a hugely important American surgeon (1785 – 1865) who performed over one thousand ground-breaking operations including the first successful amputation at the hip. The bowl went on tour from New York to the places just mentioned and now rests on display In the Milwaukee museum. So you never know what might happen when you write to me. I hope someone will re the Desk.

THE ‘HOLE’ TRUTH

AND NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH ABOUT

LETTERBOXES T

he very idea of an “optimum” location is for a letterbox in a UK property may not seem that important initially, but where the “hole” goes can be one of those quirky decisions that has a genuine impact on how well a residential composite, hardwood, metal or UPVC front door performs energy efficiency wise, plus the position of a letterplate can genuinely affect just how secure any particular home is. The favoured height of a letterbox “hole” for a postman is on or above the mid-rail of a front door or side panel. A letterbox positioned at the right height means no postman can claim “health and safety” reasons for not being able to deliver through a very low letterbox set for example in the bottom rail of a door, “forcing” them to bend their backs in order to deliver the post. If one takes a moment to consider the implications for thermal efficiency, cutting a door sash to make a hole for a letterbox is rather a counter-productive operation to an otherwise well insulated 60

MARCH2012

double glazed or triple glazed door, especially if the intention of fitting a replacement double glazed door in the first place is to exclude draughts and the cold. Even with a nylon brush draught “excluder” fitted in the internal space between the inside and outside opening letterbox flaps, this device is not sufficient insulation in itself to keep out some of the extreme Winter weather the UK has experienced in recent times. The thing to remember about a letterbox hole is that it is a two way street, which is the “hole” idea, but not so great if a prankster (or worse) decides to deliver unwanted substances. Criminals also have “devices” that they shove through letterbox holes onto the internal door handle which opens doors that have a split spindle. It is vital then, as well as closing your front door behind you to also lock your front door to prevent this happening. Consequently, some UK house owners, who have security concerns will choose to position their letterbox in a side panel to

the left or right of their front door, well away from the front door handle and locking mechanism. Also, not putting the hole for a letterbox in a front door is much better for the aesthetics of any main entrance, and means the doorway cannot then be cluttered up with holiday post that can prevent the door from opening inwards properly on ones return to the property. Security wise is it not sensible to position the letterbox hole in such a way so when you are away from home for a period of time any “build up” of post is visually obscured from unwanted external prying eyes? This can be achieved by having solid panels in your doors and side panels or very obscure glass, as double glazed and triple glazed glass comes with a choice of obscure glass patterns and designs, many of which have different levels of obscurity. Positioning a letterbox away from an entrance door still does not address the two fundamental things that let a letterbox down, namely i) that they let in the cold and draughts even when closed and ii) that

unwanted items or liquids can be pushed through them by undesirables. Inventive home owners can alleviate cold and draughts by stuffing a length of foam or a tea towel or two into the gap between the flaps, but this is not something your postman will probably appreciate! One does however need to remember to remove these layers of home-made temporary insulation early each morning so as not to put off the postman from delivering the mail! The most sensible place for a letterbox is therefore either an exterior letter box, or if one is worried about others getting hold of the mail, a letterbox hole positioned in a panel or wall that goes directly into a secure locked area such as a garage, porch or secure pillar box (i.e. somewhere that cannot be viewed externally). It is surely a bit bananas to invest hard earned cash on on a high quality thermally efficient replacement double glazed aluminium, composite or UPVC front door (or even a hardwood

one!) and then “violate it” by cutting a letterbox hole in it. Well, as the old saying goes “There is none so queer as folk.” For free professional advice on replacement residential doors from an experienced Hazlemere Windows & Doors expert, telephone 01494 854266 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk MARCH2012 61

insulated your home is, the more money you're likely to save, especially if it has an open-plan layout or you keep the internal doors open so the stove does more than just heat the room it's in. Wood burners can give out a lot of heat and you should need your heating on less when yours is lit. When it comes to the wood you burn, it's not as simple as you might think. Freshly cut wood contains up to 90% water, so you have to dry it out (season it) before you can burn it. This can take as long as three years. You can buy wood that's already seasoned, or you can season it yourself using a log store. The important thing is to allow air to circulate all around the logs so they dry out. The installation of a wood-burning stove must comply with building regulations. Rather than involving your local council's building control department (which can check and sign off the work for a fee), it's often easier to get a qualified fitter to do the job. HETAS-registered installers deal with wood, solid-fuel and biomass domestic heating appliances and can self-certify that their work complies with building regulations. Another consideration is whether the chimney needs to be lined before the stove is installed. Homes dating from the mid-1960s onwards should have had a concrete/clay chimney liner fitted when they were built, but older properties won't necessarily have an adequate liner. Get your installer to smoke-test your chimney to see if it leaks if necessary, they should be able to line it. There are lots of benefits to having a chimney lined, including better energy efficiency - and who doesn't want that?

A WOOD-BURNING STOVE

PRODUCT OF THE WEEK Cuprinol has launched a new Garden Shades Colour Mixing service, thought to be a first for woodcare. The service offers 26 new colours, including everything from traditional, earthy garden greens to bolder and brighter pinks and purples.

FIRE IT UP G et those jobs done with a little help from DIY guru Julia Gray. This week: how to get all the benefits of a real fire by using a wood-burning stove. The weather may be warming up, but it's still nice to snuggle up in front of a real fire. The problem with open fires is that they're not very energy efficient, at only around 20%. The majority of wood-burning stoves, on the other hand, are 70-90% efficient, so you get all the benefits of a real fire without most of your money going up in smoke. With prices for wood burners starting at less than ÂŁ200, they can be a really good investment. And wood, as long as it's sustainably sourced, is a more environmentally friendly fuel than oil or gas - and subject to fewer price hikes. But if you don't want to burn just wood, you don't have to - get a multi-fuel stove, and you should be able to burn coal, smokeless fuel, turf and peat, too. While the stoves themselves can be relatively inexpensive, you need to add on the cost of the accessories, installation and any associated building working. The good news is that your stove should start saving you money straightaway. The more powerful it is and the smaller and better

They're available at Dulux paint-mixing machines in DIY stores. For more information, go to www.cuprinol.co.uk where you can buy tester pots and will find great ideas about how to jazz up your garden wood this spring/summer. HOW-TO TIP If your radiators are hot at the bottom and cold at the top, this usually means there's trapped air inside, which stops them from filling with water and working properly. The bleed valve is generally at the top of the radiator, and the shape of the hole in it will determine whether you use a radiator key or a small screwdriver to bleed it. Only bleed your radiators when the central heating is turned off and the radiators are cold. If you don't, you could get scalded, and more air could get into the radiators. Before you open the bleed valve, cover the floor underneath to protect it, and hold a cloth underneath the valve to catch any drips. Insert the key or screwdriver into the valve and turn it slowly to open it. You'll hear a hissing sound, which is the air escaping. Once water starts coming out, close the valve, clean up and move on to the next radiator â–

Bring the outdoors in...

WHY CONFINE YOUR LIVING AREA TO INDOORS WHEN WITH A BIT OF SAVVY PLANNING YOU CAN BRING THE OUTDOORS IN?

K

nocking down walls to create an open-plan space is more popular than ever. It brings friends and family together and can extend your living area into the garden for the warmer months. “Kitchens and living spaces need flexibility for different times of the year and different styles of entertaining” says Martin Postle, design manager at Teddy Edwards. “While you may want guests dining near an open fireplace during the winter months, summer dining may be near glazed door that slide or fold back to bring the garden into your living space. Consider the different ways you dine, live and use furniture at different

times of the year. I question clients on their living habits throughout the year to help get this balance right”. With garden living in mind, the key to kitchen planning is a sociable layout. Use islands and peninsulas for hob cooking and preparation areas. This allows the cook to look out into the living and outdoor areas, be involved when entertaining, or keep an eye on children playing outside. An island also minimises the need for wall storage space, freeing up the walls for glazing. Flooring is another important consideration. If you are barbecuing or entertaining outside a great deal you may

need a durable floor that is resistant to staining, scratching and is easy to clean. Choose tiles in matt tones of warm greys, beiges and browns with plenty of character and warmth. For kitchens that are a joy

not only to look at, but to work in as well, a visit to the Teddy Edwards showroom should be top of list. Teddy Edwards, 67 Woodstock Road, Oxford, OX2 6HJ. Tel: 01865 404 960 www.teddy-edwards.co.uk n

he right bed is extremely important to our health and wellbeing because our sleeping environment will affect the quality of our sleep – which in turn has a big effect on how well we feel, both physically and psychologically.

A bed with the correct support, comfort and space will ensure you wake less, move about less, are less disturbed by your partner and are less likely to wake up feeling tired or aching. So, what is the right bed? It’s not easy to make specific recommendations. There’s such a huge choice on the market place and the key deciding factor – is it comfortable – is such a subjective measure. “All we can do is give people an overview of the different types of bed available and tips on how to go about the process of choosing the right bed for them,” explains Sleep Council spokesperson Jessica Alexander. The Sleep Council was set up to provide an independent source of advice on bed buying – as well as to raise awareness of the importance of getting a good night’s sleep to health and wellbeing. According to The Sleep Council, Goldilocks had the right idea: the right bed’s neither too soft nor too hard – but it suits everyone’s very individual needs. First and foremost it must give you correct support and comfort – but individuals might also have to consider factors such as back pain, allergies, breathing problems, available budget, whether a type of mattress makes you too hot, storage or space requirements: not to mention style preferences. Size is important. The most common British double bed size of 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in (135cm x 190cm) really isn’t big enough for two to sleep well without disturbing each other: studies have shown that more space – even a slight move up to a 5ft x 6ft 6in (150cm x 200cm) King size bed – can make a lot of difference to night-time comfort. Always consider both the mattress and its support, whether divan base or bedstead. They work together to create the overall feel and performance of a bed, with different combinations producing differing results. If you are not buying a base and mattress from the same supplier, make sure the mattress is suitable for use with the type of support you are considering: if you don’t, lack of durability could be a problem, with no comeback to the supplier. There are many types – and prices of beds – from which to choose, each offering their own features and benefits. Mattresses come with various types of internal spring unit – open coil, pocket sprung or continuous springing – in ordinary foam, visco-elastic or latex foam, filled with cotton or other fibres (futons!). You should spend as much as you can afford on a new bed – it’s probably one of the most important investments you’ll make, not just for your home but also for your own wellbeing! Remember, every £100 you spend represents just 2.7p a night over 10 years.

Once you’ve got your new bed, do remember that it won’t stay wonderful forever – beds get a lot of wear and tear! Over time, your comfort and support needs change, too. Do the Bed MOT test once a year – National Bed Month, which runs throughout March, is a good time to consider the state of your bed and your sleep and comfort quality. Visit www.sleepcouncil.com to take the Bed MOT, New Bed Profile, reach bed-buying and sleep tips, and watch videos that help people sleep better or select the right bed for them. The Sleep Council is a generic organisation which seeks to promote the importance of a good night’s sleep to health and wellbeing and the advantages associated with a comfortable bed, regularly replaced. In addition to advice on how to get a good night’s sleep, the Sleep Council provides tips on choosing the right bed. The Sleep Council is funded by the bed industry www.sleepcouncil.org.uk ■

DIG DEEP

Get those jobs done with a little help from DIY guru Julia Gray. This week: how to convert a cellar into living space. If your home has a cellar - as many in towns and cities do you're probably using it as storage, but it could be much more useful - and valuable - as living space. When you're starting to outgrow your home, a cellar conversion can be a great way to make it bigger, without having to go to the hassle and expense of moving. There are a couple of obvious problems with cellar conversions lack of light and head height. These can be improved, but cellars are never going to be the lightest, tallest spaces. For this reason, cellar conversions tend to make better bedrooms, bathrooms and playrooms than living rooms and kitchens, because the latter work best when they're light and bright. Few cellars have enough head height as they are, as the ceiling should be at least 2.4m (8ft) from the floor. This usually means digging down below the existing floor level and removing a lot of earth - an expensive and laborious task that can reveal hidden problems. Converting a cellar is difficult if the house's foundations prove to be shallow. If this is the case with yours, you'll have to get the house underpinned, which isn't cheap, although some cellar-conversion companies do this as a matter of course. There may also be pipes in the way, but these can usually be moved. Rather than digging down, you may find it easier to have the floors raised in the rooms above the cellar, providing the ceilings in those rooms are high enough. Another problem with cellar conversions is making them watertight, so it's really important to get a reputable company or companies to do the work. You can either employ an architect to draw up plans for the conversion (in consultation with a structural engineer) and a builder to do the work, or you can get a cellar-conversion company to do everything. If you do use a builder, it's a good idea to use a specialist damp-proofing company, too, because you don't want to risk the conversion springing a leak. Planning permission is usually required for cellar conversions ask your local council's planning department about this - not least because they usually involve a light well being dug in the front garden. Your architect or cellar-conversion company should be able to help you apply for planning.

THE BOSCH PRIO SANDER, £50.98, B&Q

A CONVERTED CELLAR

Like all major building projects, conversions must comply with building regulations. The council's building control department will want to check on the work as it progresses to ensure it complies and will have to sign it off at the end to make it legal. You may also require permission from the freeholder (if you live in a leasehold property), and from your neighbours (if the cellar conversion involves a wall or boundary you share with them) so that you comply with the Party Wall Act. A cellar below your home's footprint will take around 12 to 24 weeks to convert, plus a few months for the planning stages. The cost should be from around £3,300 per sqm, depending on what's involved. PRODUCT OF THE WEEK The Bosch Prio sander, £50.98, B&Q, is a rarity because it's cordless. The Prio has a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and, unlike a lot of sanders, is light and manoeuvrable. It also has a rubberised, ergonomically designed top, so it's a pleasure to use, even for long periods. A handy indicator light shows you when the battery is running low and when it's fully charged. It charges in no time, and the charger doubles as a holder for sanding sheets. You don't even have to change the battery - just slot the Prio into the charger and plug the charger into the wall. A brilliant little sander. HOW-TO TIP The easiest way to paint around light sockets and switches is to undo the screws fixing the front plate to the box buried in the wall, then ease the plate away from the wall slightly (turn off the switch/socket and don't touch the wires inside), so you can paint right up to the box without getting paint on the plate. Screw the plate back on when the final coat of paint is dry ■

TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS!

This weekend we celebrated 25 years of trading in Chalfont St Giles, along with the opening of our brand new refurbished showroom. We have also been exhibiting some outstanding work from second year students studying Furniture Design at Bucks New University. As a small family business we wanted to support young people learning traditional skills as part of British furniture making. We felt very strongly that we wanted to share our knowledge and passion for furniture making with up and coming new talent in this field. In last months column we talked about our involvement with local students as part of our association with the National School of Furniture - a joint initiative between Bucks New University and Oxford and Cherwell Valley College. Second year BA (Hons) Furniture: Design and Craft students were tasked with a project set by St Giles Furniture to “design a home office with elegance to incorporate modern technology.” St Giles Furniture provided grants of between £60 and £200 to help students design and 78

build the desks which were showcased this weekend with their ideas boards and drawings behind them. Andrew Shenton, course leader, said the University appreciated the ‘prestigious backing’ from St Giles Furniture and added that “The students have had to work from a brief which stated they had to make writing tables which fitted in to a ‘working at home’ theme. They also had to complete the work by a deadline and produce it to a standard suitable for sale. It has been a valuable and worthwhile experience.” Harry Williams graduated in 2011 and won first prize in the inaugural St Giles Furniture competition, which was judged at Bucks New University’s end-of-year art and design show, Bucks EYeS. He produced a high-quality chair, which is also on sale. Fellow student Lewis Blackedge made a designer lightbox table, which he said would be ideal for illustrators. The solid walnut structure was made with an ash stand and with Indian ink and solid copper inlay in a formed copper tube, with glass on top. Lewis said the table had 'an antique

feel in a contemporary style'. Lewis added: "It is amazing to be able to sell one of my pieces in such a fantastic showroom so I am very grateful to Toby Smith for his support. I have felt a real incentive to get the table made to a high standard and a level suitable to exhibit." Faye Murphy made a free-form laminated sculpture, which could be used to rest items like an iPad or book on, or used as decoration. Faye said: "It is really good to have something like this to work for. I am excited about displaying my work at St Giles Furniture and hopefully making some contacts." Over one hundred customers helped to make our celebrations a really special event. The icing on the cake was our charity auction which boosted funds for the three charities we are helping this year: The Outward Bound Trust, NACC and Breakthrough Breast Cancer. A huge thank you to everyone who donated prizes and to all of our customers who participated in the auction! £100,000 whisky

TO CELEBRATE THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE

J

ust 60 bottles of a Diamond Jubilee scotch, made by Johnnie Walker distiller Diageo, have been produced for sale, and are being offered to known collectors of rare and expensive whiskies. Another single bottle will be given to the Queen herself. The whisky is a blend of grain and malt whiskies dating back from 1952, and finished in casks made of oak from the Queen’s Sandringham estate. If you don’t have £100,000 to spend and are wondering what it tastes like, the master blender for all Johnnie Walker whiskies, Jim Beveridge, said he is “surprised and delighted” by the way the Jubilee whisky has turned out. “With whisky as old as 60 years, sometimes it can be a bit crusty and the flavours can be a bit subdued. But this one is very vibrant,” he said. “It has a fresh fruity flavour, and a finish which is smoky and also has an exotic fruit taste.” He added that Diageo has whisky stocks dating back 50 years, but for anything older than that there are far fewer to choose from. “1952 was an interesting year for distillers, as the whisky industry started to get back on its feet after the Second World War “ said Mr Beveridge. The whisky was bottled on 7th February in Baccarat crystal decanters, at the Royal Lochnagar Distillery on the edges of the Queen’s Balmoral estate. David Gates, the head of Diageo’s whisky business, said the company originally planned to offer the Diamond Jubilee whisky to wealthy afficionados in Asia Pacific and Latin America, but has now had requests from the US and Europe as well. All profits from the sale of the bottles will go to the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust (QEST).

FOR THE BUTCHER’S WIFE, TURKEY REALLY DOES HAVE ALL THE TRIMMINGS!

WHEN IT COMES TO HOLIDAYS, IRENE LINE AND HER HUSBAND - THE OWNER OF A THRIVING BUTCHER’S BUSINESS FOR NEARLY FIFTY YEARS – COULD BE DESCRIBED AS DISCERNING CUSTOMERS. HAVING STAYED AT SOME OF THE WORLD’S VERY FINEST HOTELS, SUCH AS LE SAINT GERAN AND LE TOUESSROK IN MAURITIUS, AS WELL AS KANUHURA IN THE MALDIVES, THE COUPLE EXPECT HIGH STANDARDS.

S

o when Ronnie Findlay, the Managing Director of their trusted local travel agent, enjoyholidays, suggested Turkey as an alternative, Irene took a bit of persuading. But now she’s been twice, she and her husband have no regrets. “We just like a nice standard of accommodation and good weather” says Irene, who lives in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire, describing their admirably simple holiday requirements. So, why those exotic holiday destinations in the past? “With my husband working then, we really liked to ‘kick-back and relax’” explains Irene. But long-haul flights can really take the gloss off a relaxing holiday, and recent years have seen significant price rises in some exotic destinations, so Ronnie suggested Turkey as an alternative. Irene took Ronnie’s suggestion… and loved it. 84

MARCH2012

“The hotels were outstanding…and the weather was good. We went to Belek, once in June and once in September. The first time we stayed at the Rixos Premium Hotel, the second at the Maxx Royal Hotel, which was faultless.” recalls Irene. “Belek has beautiful beaches and the hotel staff members were very obliging, very helpful.” And Irene was a particularly welcome guest, due to her willingness to help the hotel staff with their English! “There was so much to do in the hotels, you had everything you wanted there. The entertainment at both hotels was first-class, they have everything from A to Z: at the Maxx, we even had the Moscow Children’s Circus, which I didn’t know existed!” And Irene has plenty of good things to say about the food, too. “Both hotels had very good food, both had silver-service

restaurants as well as the big self-service restaurants. You had everything from Turkish food, which meant you could try different things, as well as English cuisine. The salads were out-of this-world and the fresh fish was amazing.” Having been to Mauritius and the Maldives, Irene was used to fantastic weather on her holidays. But Turkey didn’t let her down in that respect. “It was just nice to get up in the morning, open up the curtains and …wow! Blue skies and sunshine – again! Yes!” she remembers with a smile. Irene had gone looking for value-for-money, so how did Turkey match up to the promises that Ronnie Findlay had made? “Absolutely superb! We could go to Turkey for four weeks for what we were paying for ten days in the Maldives,” says Irene, without hesitation. So, great hotels, friendly and

helpful staff, superb weather, marvellous food and real value-for-money. And there was another big advantage, one that had persuaded them to choose Turkey in the first place – no more tiring, long-haul flights to find the sunshine. Irene says: “The four-hour flight was easy – four hours, and you’re there.” Irene is planning another Turkey holiday for 2012 and would recommend it to anyone “I would say to anyone who thinks ‘Turkey? That sounds a bit third-world’, well, it isn’t, just go and give it a try! The value is amazing, the food is good…and the service is great.” Chalfont St Peter-based travel agent enjoyholidays prides itself in its expertise Turkish holidays. FLY FROM OXFORD AIRPORT TO JERSEY AND THE ISLE OF MAN

THIS SUMMER

C

ood news for those in the Thames Valley catchment areas. London Oxford Airport is welcoming daily, year round, scheduled flights to the Islands of Jersey and the Isle of Man from May 8. Isle of Man-based Manx2.com (www.manx2.com) is making its debut at the expanding airport, offering single fares from £49.95. Flights depart Oxford for Jersey at 12:25 and for the Isle of Man at 15:15. (Sunday times depart 15:30 for Jersey, 18:20 for IoM). More than five million people reside within an hour’s drive of Oxford Airport and as Jersey and the Isle of Man no longer have air services to London Heathrow, this service will be a viable alternative for Islanders heading west of London too. The Isle of Man route will be ideal for short breaks with its stunning scenery and unspoilt beaches, as well as appealing to business travellers with interests in offshore banking, aircraft and shipping management, finance and tourism. Jersey is one of Europe’s top holiday destinations, offering accommodation to suit all tastes from camping to five star luxury hotels. New commercial services follow a successful growth in business aviation News of these new commercial services comes hard on the heels of what has been a very successful year. In 2011 Oxford Airport, 86

MARCH2012

independently owned by the Reuben Brothers, outpaced its immediate peer airports in Europe with a 13.3% year on year, calendar year end growth in its business aviation movements, some 6000 flights last year. The airport continues to invest in new hangars and office space and in a significant step forward with infrastructure development, it committed a £4.5 million investment in the latest generation radar system last year. The surveillance radar system is currently undergoing testing and will be fully operational by the end of May. It is amongst the most modern and sophisticated radar systems available today and will enable more efficient transits through local airspace. In February, The Reuben Brothers purchased The London Heliport in Battersea, which will now be run as a sister airport to Oxford Airport. With an established client base and a newly developed terminal it also benefits from an exemption to the no-fly zone during the 2012 Olympics, meaning a large number of dignitaries and other VIPs will be able to use the London Heliport as an easy access route to the 2012 Games.
