Rob Heeney has established a reputation as one of the top comics working the UK circuit today. His style is a blend of bitterness, playfulness and cynicism wrapped up in a blanket of charm. Otiz Cannelloni combines the illusion of magic and the wit of stand up to produce a hybrid comic creation. With a mind more suited to testing crash helmets, his performance fluctuates between sheer genius and downright stupidity. £8 / £6 DC 9pm 01442 228 091 The Old Town Hall Theatre, High Street, Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire HP1 3AE Monday 25 Mar 2013 www.oldtownhall.co.uk DAY WALK - CHESS VALLEY, BUCKS.

FREEDOM OF THE RIVER

DON’T MISS The chance to try the incredible functional electrical stimulation (FES) rowing machine, and experience the revolutionary electrical stimulation that has allowed disabled athletes to triumph over spinal injuries to win Paralympic gold medals.

WORDS BY JACK HICKMOTT

T

here are many reasons why someone would want to visit the award-winning River & Rowing Museum, but during this spring and early summer you only need one. From seeing blind First World War soldiers racing against the students of Worcester College for the Blind in 1918 to Team GB triumphing at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, their latest exhibition captures the rich history of adaptive Rowing and celebrates some of the inspiring stories that have made the sport what it is today. It is little known that adaptive rowing has a history that spans more than 100 years, with the sport only making its Paralympic debut at Beijing 2008, but as Freedom of the River illustrates, adaptive rowing has been a life-changing part of thousands of people’s lives around the world for over a century. Visitors to Freedom of the River will be presented with an extensive insight into how technology has enabled those with a range of disabilities to compete on an international scale and see the astonishing rise in global 12

MARCH2013

popularity that disabled sport has seen in recent years. What makes this exhibition particularity interesting is that it offers the public the chance to see, and even experience, the state of the art technology that is normally locked away in training facilities. Working with the official governing body for the sport, British Rowing, the Museum has once again drawn from their extensive archive of rowing history to create a rich tapestry that captures adaptive rowing’s history through an intricate series of objects, technology and storyboards. State of the art FES (functional electrical stimulation) rowing ergos, which provide muscle stimulation to paralysed athletes, have opened up ever-growing opportunities to those with disabilities and are

now on show for the public to try. The many objects on display tell the stories of those who have triumphed over pain and adversity through both technological advances and human spirit. The exhibition explores the journey that has led to expeditions across both the Indian and Atlantic oceans as well as countless Paralympic gold medals. But it’s not just the objects and stories that take centre stage for the show, it also provides a unique insight into the incredible number of rowing clubs and organisations across the UK that enable people with a wide range of physical and mental disabilities to take part in indoor and outdoor rowing with the aid of equipment adapted to their needs and the support of coaches and volunteers. Gold medal winning

Paralympian and endorsee of the exhibition, Naomi Riches, said: 'With the success of the Paralympic Games last summer, the public interest in disabled sport has really grown. It is fantastic that the River and Rowing museum is creating this exhibition. It will educate people about where Paralympic rowing has come from, it is a pretty good story after all. I feel honoured to be involved.' The Museum is known worldwide for housing the most comprehensive collection of rowing history and attracts more than 115,000 visitors a year. It reported record visitor numbers last year and you can get admission for a whole year for the price of just one ticket (£8.50) so after visiting Freedom of the River keep an eye out for their upcoming shows. Visit www.rrm.co.uk and follow @River_Rowing on twitter for updates and more information.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG AT THE GROVE

Romantic escapes

T

he Grove, London’s Country Estate, is the perfect haven for a romantic escape this spring as its 300 acres of woodland and formal gardens burst into life and colour. Explore the woodland trails, picturesque lake, tranquil canal and stunning bluebell meadow by bike or on foot, or take in the beauty of the formal gardens in a quiet stroll hand in hand. Take time to relax and unwind over lunch or afternoon tea in The Library or one of the four elegant Lounges in the mansion, overlooking the enchanting formal gardens through floor-to- ceiling

French windows. With stunning original fireplaces and sumptuous sofas on which to recline, these historic rooms are just the place to while away time over a game of scrabble or the day’s newspaper; breakfast, light meals and snacks are served daily, while Afternoon Tea is served exclusively from 3.00pm-5.00pm. To dine is an experience in itself at The Grove, with three restaurants to choose from, each unique in style but bound by a common passion for quality, seasonality and simplicity. The hotel’s signature restaurant is Colette’s in the heart of the historic mansion, with rising star Head Chef

Russell Bateman at the helm. A protégé of Gordon Ramsay and Marcus Wareing, Russell has won 3 AA Rosettes and brings his own creativity and flair to the food on the menu at Colette’s, including Scottish Beef Tartare with Sour Cream, Water Cress, Sourdough and Horseradish; Cornish Day Boat Monkfish with Heritage Carrots and Cuttlefish Sauce and Cornish Brill with Wild Garlic, Pickled Shellfish and Salsify. Russell’s skill is to combine classic flavours with the more adventurous. His unique style of embracing diverse food and cultures while subtly mixing flavours and textures is highlighted through the use of the freshest and best ingredients, with many picked

daily from The Grove’s Walled Garden. The Glasshouse is the ideal choice for a more informal culinary experience. Known as The Grove’s international theatre of cooking with its open-plan kitchen and impressive buffet style dining, The Glasshouse features an extensive terrace overlooking the formal gardens. The Stables, situated in the original 18th century stable block, has a wholesome and rustic feel to it – perfect for the whole family. Head Chef Christopher Mouyassi uses the very best in seasonal ingredients to create informal yet gorgeous comfort food, which has been recently awarded an AA Rosette for innovation. look and feel, the restaurant opens onto a courtyard with views across to the golf course and the rolling hills beyond, providing an entirely different ambience from Colette’s and The Glasshouse.

Fun-filled family breaks

T

he Grove provides a fun-filled break for all the family, whether they are young at heart, or young in years. With the expansive parkland, woods, meadows and gardens at their feet, there is plenty of space for little ones to run off some energy. activities designed specifically for children this spring. With contemporary deluxe family rooms and facilities geared specifically for families, enjoy four nights for the price of three this Easter weekend, from £325 per room. Combine a visit to The Grove with a trip to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter. A home-from-home for many of the stars, including Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Tom Felton during the filming of the international blockbuster series, The Grove is just a short drive from the sensational Warner

Bros. Studio Tour and offers overnight breaks starting from £350 per night including studio tour tickets.

Easter weekend children’s activities

T

his spring, The Grove’s stunning Walled Garden opens once again for a season of enjoyment for all the family. Head over to the beach for a game of volleyball, croquet on the lawn, a drink or two in the Potting Shed or poolside gazebo and (weather permitting) an outdoor swim in the pool. The Grove also offers a structured range of events over Easter, specifically for children over 2 years of age. Children can take part in organised games of rounders, cricket, tennis, football and golf, or the Easter Arts and Crafts Workshop for budding creative types. They can also enjoy an

Easter Tea, face painting, story hour, giant Scalextic, Formula 1 games consoles, children’s cinema and a Circus Skills Workshop at designated times each day. AN ARTS FESTIVAL IS BORN!

B

e part of history this summer as Chiltern Arts Fest Live 2013 takes place for the very first time at Chiltern Open Air Museum in Chalfont St Giles. Whether you are an artist, an art collector, whether you love rummaging for handmade jewellery and gifts, or are looking for a highlight for half-term, don’t miss out … Run in association with Bucks Open Studios, Chiltern Arts Fest Live is a gem of an opportunity to meet and chat with a prestigious group of artists in action, in a stunning heritage setting on the edge of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Featuring several artists with royal connections, most appropriate for an event which takes place on the 60th anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation, a rich and diverse pool of talent and inspiration from Oxfordshire, Henley, across Marlow and Buckinghamshire, to Hertfordshire, Berkhamsted, Milton Keynes and beyond will come together in one great creative feast. Inspiration is intrinsic to the Museum itself. As you come through the Blythe Road Pavilion ticket office from Maidenhead, you are greeted by the informal climbing roses of a delightful Gertrude Jekyll style garden. Jekyll was, of course, a noted artist herself from the early 1900s as well as gardener/craftswoman of great note and her horticultural heritage sets the scene as you move towards the Village Green, passing the shire horses and rare variety cherry tree orchard en route. Wander round the quirky historic buildings, meet and greet the potters,

A ONE STOP SHOP FOR CURD NERDS AND CHEESE LOVERS THE BEACONSFIELD CHEESE MAKER’S MARKET

W

ith over 98% of British household s buying cheese, and a staggering 700,000 tonnes (including cottage cheese and fromage frais) consumed on average each year, the UK is clearly a nation of Cheese Lovers. And so what better place to visit, than the UK’s top event for Cheese Lovers, which will take place on Saturday 13th April at The Market Place, Old Beaconsfield? Although Cheddar is the nation’s favourite cheese, this event will offer visitors so much more! An opportunity to taste, learn about, and buy new and unusual cheeses, as well as artisan and traditional favourites, the Cheese Makers Market will offer cheeses from 20

over 70 different producers, showcasing both British and Continental varieties. In association with Premier Cheese (a specialist supplier to top restaurants around the UK including Le Manoir aux Quat Saisons and Tom Aikens) and La Cave à Fromage (a wonderful cheese retailer with shops in London and Brighton offering over 200 different varieties) this will mark the third year of the market. Last year’s participants

included noted producers such as Cooleeney from Ireland, Thornby Moor from Cumbria, Bath Soft Cheese, Cornish Blue Cheese, Errington from Scotland, Isle of Mull Cheddar and Innes Cheese from Staffordshire. This year, Eric Charriaux and Amnon Paldi, Directors of both Premier Cheese and La Cave à Fromage, will be making The Cheese Makers Market even bigger and better, with more producers (hailing as far as

Portugal, Spain, France and Italy), cheese and wine matching tutorials hosted by renowned wine journalist Tim Atkin, workshops, and a Cheese & Wine bistro, offering generous platters of cheese, wine and bread for £14.50. Launching at the market will be the exclusive Baron Edmund de Rothschild Brie, which will be available to UK consumers for the first time. This is the only true Brie Fermier remaining in France, where the strict rules laid down by the AOC (L'Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) dictate that in order

to be classed as ‘Fermier’, a Brie must be produced with milk from a farm’s own herd of cows, or use milk that is sourced from a 5km surrounding radius. The Cheese Makers Market will also have a few carefully selected stands selling cheese macaroons, cheese ice cream, cheese making kits, cheese accessories, wine, cider, beer,

bread and hot food made with cheese. Cold storage will be available for visitors wanting to purchase and keep their shopping chilled while they continue to browse and enjoy their time at Old Beaconsfield. Amnon Paldi said, “Although Cheese is our business, it is also our passion and hobby! We want to give visitors the opportunity to not only taste cheeses that may be new to them, but also allow them to meet the Cheese Makers who may produce some of their favourites. The Cheese Makers Market will be a must visit for not only die hard cheese lovers, but also for consumers looking for a one

Cliveden celebrates the birthday of one of Britain’s most illustrious women NANCY ASTOR’S BIRTHDAY PARTY, SUNDAY 19 MAY

T

he National Trust estate of Cliveden in Buckinghamshire invites you to join a glamorous garden party on Sunday 19 May in celebration of the birthday of one of its most remarkable owners – Nancy Astor. The event will take Cliveden back to the 1930s when Nancy Astor and her friends and family would have celebrated in the glorious grounds. The picturesque Water Garden will be transformed for the day, with live music, colourful bunting, a traditional Punch and Judy show and of course a very special birthday cake. Craft activities, including the chance to make a paper party hat, free face painting, big birthday party games as well as Cliveden’s giant maze and the storybook themed play area provide further fun for youngsters. Nancy Astor was born 134 years ago on 19 May 1879 in Virginia in the United States and made her first visit to England in 1903. She met her second husband, fellow 24

American Waldorf Astor, on an ocean liner bound for England a few years later and they married in May 1906. Unlike Nancy, Waldorf had grown up in England. His father purchased the Italianate villa of Cliveden in 1893 and gave it to the young couple as a wedding gift. Under Nancy and Waldorf Astor’s ownership in the early 20th-century, Cliveden became an elegant destination for the rich and powerful. Together, they transformed Cliveden into a centre of political and literary society and guests included Kings Edward VII and George VI, writers and film stars such as George Bernard Shaw and Charlie Chaplin, and important political figures, amongst them Winston Churchill. In 1919 Nancy Astor was elected to Parliament for Plymouth and she made history as the first woman to take up her seat in the House of Commons. On Sunday 19 May another attraction for visitors will be the opportunity to chat with some of the famous characters from Cliveden’s glittering past as

1930s ‘celebrities’ played by the National Trust’s volunteer actors join the birthday party. Adding to the traditional garden party feel, there will be live musical entertainment to ensure the day goes with a swing. Visitors are also encouraged to step back in time to the 1930s and come dresses in costumes from the period, from feather boas and straw boaters, to flapper dresses and flannels. Everyone is welcome to bring their own picnics to enjoy in the Water Garden; however, delicious refreshments are also on offer, with the National Trust cafes laying on a feast of cream teas and other sweet treats, some made from period recipes. Nancy was known to be very partial to a fruit cake called Tennis Cake, which she served for picnic teas during tennis afternoons, and this

cake will be recreated specially for her birthday. For those keen to learn more about Nancy Astor, a trip to the National Trust shop is a must as you’ll find a selection of books on her life for sale. On Sunday 19 May, biographer and historian Adrian Fort will be visiting Cliveden to sign copies of his latest book Nancy – A Story of Lady Astor. Nancy Astor’s birthday celebrations will run from11am to 4pm on Sunday 19 May. Normal Cliveden admission charges apply (adult £9.50, child £4.75, National Trust members free) but no advance booking is required. Location: Cliveden, Taplow, Maidenhead, Buckinghamshire SL6 0JA. CHILTERN TREASURES

T

he Chiltern Painters hope that as many Life Magazine readers as possible will visit their Spring Art Exhibition, which is again being held in the Market Hall, Old Amersham from Thursday 25th April until Sunday 28th April. Entry to the show is free and a warm welcome awaits all visitors. The Chiltern Painters group, which began life in 1969 with four members, has grown in number to eighteen, several honorary members including the well-known singer and entertainer Val Doonican, also a talented artist. Two of the group’s “founding four” Ann Way and Ron Evens - are still exhibiting as honorary members forty years on. One of the principles on which the Chiltern Painters was founded was that members should be friends as well as artists, and through the years this has remained true. Today’s members meet regularly in each other’s homes for talks, demonstrations and critiques by invited professional artists, and during the summer months (weather permitting!) the group paints together outside in various locations around the beautiful Chiltern countryside. There are also occasional joint outings to major exhibitions in London and elsewhere. Originally consisting only of amateur artists, the group now includes both professional and amateurs, and the scope of the work displayed has widened greatly to include sculpture, print-making and wood-carving. The painters in the group work in watercolour, pastels, oils and acrylics in a variety of styles and formats. The Chiltern Painters’ Chairman, Denis Pannett, is a Past President of the prestigious Wapping Group of Artists, an Honorary Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Painter Stainers and a Fellow of the Guild of Aviation Artists, being seven times winner of the prize for the best watercolour in their show at the Mall Galleries. Among his numerous 26

MARCH2013

commissions are paintings for the official Christmas cards for Sandringham House, St George’s Chapel, Windsor and St. Paul’s and Salisbury Cathedrals. Other Chiltern Painters have also regularly exhibited their work at major shows in London and elsewhere. Paintings by Paulene Tunnicliffe have been hung by the R.O.I., the Pastel Society and the Ne English Art Club, and a pastel by her won the Annie Longley award. Robald Wilkinson, a print maker, engraver and designer of renown and formerly a part-time tutor at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, has exhibited at the Bankside Galleries in London, in Birmingham and at Brunell University. Distinguished architect, Ronald Weeks has had drawings and paintings shown at the Royal Academy’s Exhibition and in Bristol and France. Ann Hogben is a prominent sculptor working in clay, bronze and bronze resin, who’s work has been exhibited at the Chelsea and Hampton Court Flower Shows, at R.H.S. Wisley and Country Living shows in London. A recent work by Ann was a commission for the Royal Marsden Hospital. The Chiltern Painters‘ 2013 exhibition will celebrate the artistes‘ love of the Chiltern scenery, so much of it now under threat from the construction of High-Speed railway. Other paintings, through, will range further afield in subject matter, reflecting members many interests and visits to other parts of the country and world. In addition to the paintings prints and sculptures, at prices and sizes to suit all wallets and walls, there will be a large and varied selection of greetings cards and sales at a very reasonable £1.00 each. CELEBRITY FOOTBALLERS GIVE A SPORTING HAND FOR PROSTATE CANCER

B

enny Mitchell, 62, resident of Berkhamsted in Hertfordshire, is organizing a celebrity 6-a-side football tournament and family fun day on Sunday 12 May 2013 at the Berkhamsted football ground in aid of men’s cancer and, specifically, to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer. Both Benny and his brother Michael, an experienced marathon runner, were diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2009 and 2007 respectively. During Benny’s life and before his own illness, members of his family had many reasons to be thankful to the NHS. This event provides an opportunity to pay their thanks and raise funds at the same time.

28

MARCH2013

The event on Sunday 12 May is for all the family, with fancy dress, kids entertainment and games, disco, bouncy castle, competition to win a brand new Ford Ranger, courtesy of Autorama UK Ltd in Tring, music, food, ladies football courtesy of Watford FC ladies team and, of course, the star attraction, the celebrity 6-a-side football tournament. Some prestigious names make up the list of celebrities, including the likes of Mick Harford, footballer turned Manager, Eddie Niedzwiecki from Chelsea FC, local man Tommy Smith, Nigel Winterburn of Arsenal, referee Graham Poll and commentator Peter Drury, to name just a few, with many more still to be confirmed. As a keen sportsman, Benny

decided to raise funds for The Lister Hospital in Stevenage, where his operation was performed in September 2010, through contacts and friends he had met through sport. Moreover, as a resident of Berkhamsted and friends with Steve Davis, Chairman of Berkhamsted Football Club, Benny’s idea of organising a charity football event for Prostate Cancer quickly gained support and grew into more than just an idea. Says Benny, “When I decided to arrange a football charity event for Prostate Cancer, Steve and Berkhamsted FC were more than supportive and agreed to become involved in what we are trying to achieve”. In conjunction with The Lister Hospital, Benny’s charity is called

‘A Sporting Hand’. “I and Michael have lived to tell the tale about Prostate Cancer, but many of our friends haven’t been so lucky, including Mark Osborne, a good pal of mine from Berkhamsted FC. If caught early, men have a very good chance of surviving Prostrate Cancer. Unfortunately, Mark was misdiagnosed and died at the age of 46, only two years ago. We hope this event will go some way to addressing that sad fact.” For further information to support, sponsor or participate in the day’s activities, please contact: Benny Mitchell on tel: 07973 863815 or send an email to: bennymitchell1@hotmail.co.uk or Steve Davis on tel: 07968 476314.

ARMANI’S

ADMIRALTY ARCH Armani plans to convert iconic Admiralty Arch into a luxury hotel in London he name is a byword for style and sophistication. And having made their name in sharp Italian tailoring, it has been revealed that Armani now plans to open a £100million luxury hotel in the heart of London.

T

The fashion house is close to snapping up Admiralty Arch, the majestic gatehouse leading from Trafalgar Square to Buckingham Palace, and plans to offer rooms from December 2015. The landmark Admiralty Arch, which lies between The Mall and Trafalgar Square in memory of Queen Victoria, will now transform into a multi-million luxury hotel. The iconic hotel will house 80 to 100 guestrooms, including royal and presidential suites. It will also include a restaurant and bar for public with official Armani shops selling the luxury label’s goods Armani’s bid has not been made public, but a well-placed source has revealed the deal is at an advanced stage. It was already known that the Government has leased the landmark to developers led by Spanish entrepreneur Rafael Serrano who was behind the glitzy Bulgari Hotel in Knightsbridge. Mr Serrano stressed that the 100-yearold building’s period features would be painstakingly preserved. Giorgio Armani is one of the most iconic designers alive today. Armani’s involvement follows the success of its hotels in Dubai and Milan. It is looking at sleek marble fittings for between 80 to 100 32

guestrooms, royal and presidential suites, with initial estimates suggesting the bedrooms will each cost £600,000 to kit out. A restaurant and bar will be open to the public. There will be shops too, selling the luxury label’s goods. It is understood Giorgio Armani himself would design every aspect of the hotel from the bespoke furnishings to the menus. A source said: ‘Armani has been looking for the ideal London base for some time, and this is the result of a long search. It is a closely guarded secret but the plans are at an advanced stage.’ The developers, a London-based consortium called Prime Investors Capital, are liaising with the Government on the security implications, due to the arch’s position overlooking Whitehall. Buckingham Palace has been consulted. The deal depends on Westminster council granting planning permission, which will take at least six months as the proposals must be scrutinised by conservation experts. Prime Investors Capital denied they had chosen an operator for the hotel. An Armani spokesman said its involvement was ‘unfounded rumours’. A Cabinet Office spokesman said: ‘The restoration project that will see Admiralty Arch turned into a publicly accessible landmark hotel is still in the early planning stage. ‘No decisions on the hotel operator have been made. Prime Investors Capital are consulting their in-house advisers on hotel operations.’

THE BNY MELLON

2013 BOAT RACE SATURDAY 31ST MARCH 2013, 4.30PM he 159th Boat Race on 7th April will see oarsmen of six different nationalities competing, as the older, more internationally experienced crew from Oxford take on the younger, heavier Cambridge eight. The idea for a rowing race between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge came from two friends - Charles Merivale, a student at Cambridge, and his Harrow school friend Charles Wordsworth (nephew of the poet William Wordsworth), who was at Oxford.

T

46

MARCH2013

On 12 March 1829, Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford and thus the tradition was born which has continued to the present day, where the loser of the previous year’s race challenges the opposition to a re-match. The first Boat Race took place at Henley-onThames in Oxfordshire and contemporary newspapers report crowds of twenty thousand travelled to watch. The race was stopped soon after the start and, following the restart, Oxford were

clear winners. Cambridge wore pink, the colour of Lady Margaret Boat Club (of St. Johns College), who their captain and two other crew members rowed for. Oxford have always worn dark blue. The event was such a resounding success that the townspeople later decided to organise a regatta of their own which duly became Henley Royal Regatta. After the first year, the early Boat Races took place at Westminster in London, but by 1845, when Westminster had become too crowded, the Boat Race moved

six miles up-stream to the then country village of Putney. In 1856 the race became an annual event (excepting only the war years). The Modern Boat Race still runs along the same lines but has now become a major international sporting occasion drawing millions of viewers from around the world. The Boat Race course is marked by three classic bends, two in favour of the Middlesex station, on the north bank of the Thames, while the third favours the crew drawn on the opposite Surrey station. In spite of these bends the course is theoretically fair - the start and finish lines are exactly parallel, and in the unlikely event of the crews staying level throughout the race, they will both have covered the magic Boat Race distance of exactly 4 miles 374 yards.

yards downstream from Chiswick Road bridge and here the crowds on Race Day are as densely packed as those near the Start. What those crowds witness as the crews cross the Line is the ecstasy of the victors and the despair of the losing crew. On Race Day up to 250,000 spectators crowd the banks of the Thames from Putney to Mortlake to witness the action.

The start of the race is marked by the University stone, a few hundred yards upstream from Putney Road Bridge and for the first quarter of a mile, as the crews pass the historic boathouses of Putney Embankment. The Finish Line is just a few

Enjoy the festival atmosphere of the Boat Race by watching for free from one of the many vantage points along the course. You should be able to find a place to watch on either side of the river along the full length of the course, but particular areas to note are: Putney Bridge, Putney Embankment and Bishops Park (at the start); Hammersmith and Barnes (mid-course); Dukes Meadows and Chiswick Bridge (at the finish). Please do not drive to the race if you have a choice. Parking is limited and for non-residents on the day of The Boat race it is extremely hard to find. You risk listening to the race on the car radio instead of seeing it from the riverbank! There are large screens at Bishops Park, Fulham and Furnival Gardens, Hammersmith which mean you will be able to watch the whole Race before and after the crews have passed. The parks will also feature food outlets, beer stands and merchandising stalls. BBC1 will be showing the Boat Race live including build up from around 2pm, visit www.bbc.co.uk for more information For more information www.theboatrace.org

How to get there... BUS For the start in Putney, the number 14 bus from Tottenham Court Road and the 22 from Piccadilly Circus will both take you across Putney Bridge. For the middle part of the Race at the Surrey Bend, the number 9 bus from Charing Cross or the 10 from Euston and Oxford Circus or the 27 from Camden will take you to Hammersmith - close to the riverside at Chiswick Malls. For the Finish in Mortlake, take the 209 or 190 from Hammersmith. Bus routes are shown on all maps. TRAIN For the start in Putney, Putney railway station is on Putney High Street at the

Upper Richmond Road. Trains arrive from Clapham Junction, Waterloo or Victoria. West of Putney, the line divides at the next stop Barnes Station - just over a mile away - going towards Barnes Bridge where the finishing stretch begins, or towards Mortlake for the Finish. Stations are shown in all maps. LONDON UNDERGROUND For the Start, East Putney is south of the river and Putney Bridge is north Putney Bridge is the closest station. Ravenscourt Park and Hammersmith are closest to the viewing areas at Chiswick Mall. Stations are shown on all maps. M

icklefield Hall – the name on everyone’s lips at the moment! Well, it is if you’re thinking of getting married! A unique venue set in 350 acres of Hertfordshire’s rolling countryside, Micklefield Hall is a family home that opens its doors wide to give both brides and grooms the day of their dreams. The venue is only ever hired out on an exclusive use basis, has absolutely stunning views and is easily accessible which is surprising, given its rural setting. Micklefield is situated just 1½ miles from J18 of the M25. Weddings are run by Anna and Jamie Rankin who actually live in the house, together with their four children. They have been running weddings for the past 14 years with an enthusiasm and expertise that has continued to grow year by year. With an increasing knowledge of both religious and cultural 48

“Dear Anna and Jamie, It’s a month ago already but we are still on a high after our wedding day. We have had so many people come back and say how wonderful the venue was – there were so many fans of your lovely dogs and, of course, the chicken! Apparently one of the guests has a photo of your chicken drinking a glass of champagne which I can’t wait to see – seriously ‘classy bird’! It was undoubtedly the perfect day and I would not of wanted to change a thing. And the sun even shone – amazing. So a massive thank you to you both for all your help and patience in the lead up. You made everything so easy and your endless support was unbeatable. We want to do it all again – perhaps we will come back to Micklefield for our joint 40th! Thank you for making our day the best time of our lives!” Lots of love, Caroline and Paul, Bride & Groom requirements, they feel that they really can understand exactly what the brides and grooms want - and need - to make their day incredibly special. And, from the moment that you make your very first telephone call to the venue, Anna and Jamie will look after you personally. The Summer Marquee at Micklefield, which seats up to x 320 guests, goes up in April and comes down at the beginning of October. Brides are offered a special room in which to get

ready and the venue is licensed for both Civil Ceremonies and Civil Partnership Ceremonies. On arrival, guests are invited to walk through the hall, designed by Sir John Soane and, weather permitting, on into the stunning gardens for the Civil Ceremony and or the drinks reception. If the sun is shining, the wedding can take place at the end of the herbaceous border. The bride and groom are married in the small Temple whilst guests are seated around

the pond, in the shade of a 450yr old oak tree. Following the Ceremony, guests walk back to the house via the Rose Garden for the drinks reception before making their way down to the marquee for dinner and dancing to either a disco or a band of the Bride and Groom’s choice. Caterers can be selected from the Approved Supplier List (be it English, Asian, Kosher, Greek) and the couple are able to select their wines following tastings held at Micklefield in the Spring. Anna and Jamie take the stress out of planning your wedding. “We will hold your hand as much, or as little, as you want. We have brides who want to make their own arrangements and those who simply don’t know where to start. The really important thing for us is that their day is everything that they dreamed it would be …. and more!” More information at www.micklefieldhall.com

To complement the the polo poloThe Asahi BBritish Beach Polo Championship offers a host of other activities such as ‘hav ‘have e a go’ polo, the Oakley Ladies Beach Volleyball, fashion shows, the charity Audi Audi V Polo Pony race and the vibrant retail village. The polo is an excuse excuse to dress up (or strip off for a quick swim), stay up late and indulge. Founded by Johnny Wheeler and David Heaton-Ellis the publicity for the inaugural Championships in 2008 was kick started by Piers Morgan drawing people’s attention to Sandbanks as ‘Britain’s Monte Carlo’ . Despite the onset of the recession a growing number of businesses use this ‘boutique’ event event to entertain clients, reward their staff and promote their brands. Whilst sponsorship is still an important revenue stream new ideas such as camel polo (stand by for the elephants!), floodlit beach polo, equine displays and the appearance of the odd celebrity has kept people talking about the event and coming back year year on year year. So why does the Championships keep returning to Poole. Johnny Wheeler says ‘a cooperative council and a large stunning easily

accessible beach are the vital ingredients for us as event organisers. Some good weather, the best polo players players and an enthusiastic crowd is pretty important too’. The beach polo continues to add massive value to Sandbanks and continues to go from strength to strength. After Dark Polo players and supporters have something of a reputation for letting their hair down. down. The polo ‘beach after parties’ at Sandbanks provides seasoned and new comers to the sport with a very cool but exciting place to relax, socialise and dance until the small hours of the morning. On the Friday evening evening live live music will increase in tempo after the floodlit beach polo match with the most original DJs connecting with the mixed generation audience. 2004 FERRARI ENZO BERLINETTA COACHWORK BY PININFARINA ESTIMATE £800,000-900,000

BONHAMS CLASSIC CAR AUCTION 29TH APRIL 2013, RAF MUSEUM, HENDON, LONDON NW4 onhams, international auctioneers and valuers, return for their exclusive auction of Collectors’ Motor Cars and Automobilia at RAF Museum, Hendon, this April. The aircraft hangars and historic aviation displays provide a magnificent backdrop for the auction. There will be between 60 and 70 motor cars on show, with an expectation of approximately 1,000 registered bidders. And with the viewing audience, attendance will be high. The eager bidders and audience will be made up of a wide range of collectors and classic car enthusiasts, with a huge passion for motoring in style.

B

Rob Hubbard, Senior Specialist in the Bonhams Motor Car Department, said: “As a department we are very much looking forward to our annual sale at the RAF Museum in Hendon. It is an ideal location for a sale of collectors’ motor cars and it is always a sale that attracts a good crowd. It attracts worldwide bidding, and last year’s sale in particular recorded some very strong prices for a number of cars, particularly for those with a strong provenance or cultural significance. It has been an excellent 2013 so far for the global department, with a record sale total at our Scottsdale auction in the US in January, more than €13 million realised at our Paris auction at the Grand Palais at the start of the month, and a

fantastic $3.75 million inaugural auction at Boca Raton in Florida at the weekend. We hope to continue this success, and thus the growth of the classic car market, with our Hendon sale.” About Bonhams Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world’s largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. The present company was formed by the merger in November 2001 of Bonhams & Brooks and Phillips Son & Neale. In August 2002, the company acquired Butterfields, the principal firm of auctioneers on the West Coast of America. ACTOR FREDDIE FOX LAUNCHES

THE DEFINITIVE WHITE SHIRT IN ST JAMES’S, LONDON orld-renowned actor Freddie Fox celebrates The Definitive White Shirt in St James’s. Freddie, currently starring opposite Rupert Everett in Neil Armfield’s production of The Judas Kiss appeared in a crisp white Jermyn Street shirt with an elegant backdrop of window displays designed by the shirt makers of St James’s to celebrate the definitive white shirt.

W

St James’s is home to the famous Jermyn Street, which boasts the highest number of world renowned shirt makers on one luxury shopping street, offering the best quality shirts worldwide. According to Richard Harvie, owner of Harvie & Hudson, “The white shirt remains the best seller in St James’s”. At Turnbull & Asser nearly half of all shirts sold, both ready to wear and bespoke, are white. Popularised by the likes of award winning films James Bond, The Great Gatsby and television series Downton Abbey, the St James’s shirt makers offer a huge variety of white shirts, in the highest quality of cloths. Every design element of the shirt including collar, cuffs, buttons, shape and fit can be created to the specification of the most discerning gentleman. The secrets to many celebrated icons’ stylish looks come from their visits to the area from all over the world to have their shirts personally crafted. A white shirt is synonymous with a message of virtue, precision and power; a bespoke white shirt from Jermyn Street can enhance and define the physique, allowing the shirt to fit all proportions perfectly, even taking into account the size of your watch. Customers often discover that after experiencing a made to measure shirt for the first time, they continue to invest in bespoke. Damien Whitmore the Director of Public Affairs and Programming, Victoria and Albert Museum says, “The white shirt represents the foundations of a man’s wardrobe 54

and has been for centuries. It seems like such a simple item, but the details are what make it the very epitome of style and elegance.” Each St James’s shirt maker has their own signature design, for which they are known. A shirt exhibiting a three-button cuff is a trademark look of Turnbull & Asser; a ready to wear version of this shirt costs £145. Mother of Pearl buttons complement Emma Willis’ signature look for £290. Emmett’s signature shirt, at £95, is made using Baby Twill White, a weave known for its soft texture that becomes even more supple over time. In contrast, Budd’s distinctive shirt, £115, is made of white poplin two fold cotton with a classic Budd forward collar. New & Lingwood’s signature style involves a curved collar ending in a point, allowing the collar to lay properly on the upper breast bone, and costs £95. Harvie & Hudson’s iconic shirt is the plush and luxurious white Herringbone and a white ready to wear version costs £64.50. Favourbrook’s 1850’s Victorian Morning Wing Collar Dress Shirt at £90 has an accentuated high collar and emphasised wing lapels that create a stunning effect when paired with a silk cravat. Along with the medium weight white cotton poplin, covered buttons and French-cuffs, the straight cut tailoring creates an elegant profile. Hilditch & Key’s bestseller is the Carlton with their classic collar and double cuff, made with the finest two-fold cotton poplin and real shell buttons. Royal Warrant holder Stephen Quin from Turnbull & Asser believes that “Every man should have at least three white shirts in their wardrobe”, with the best accessory to complement the white shirt being a silk tie. WINDOW DRESSING o Two Days is a Rickmansworth-based window dressing and visual merchandising business offering freelance window design and dressing services ranging from local fashion boutiques to fabric shops in London's famous Berwick Street. Abbey Booth, owner of No Two Days, took plenty of time considering her next career move after having her two children, "My background is in advertising and marketing for a national newspaper and I wanted to utilise my skills in a more creative way and looked at all my options before deciding to study with the British Display Society to get a recognised qualification in visual merchandising. I have always loved fashion and style and as a child was very creative, so I looked at ways I could incorporate my skills and passion in to a career and more importantly my own business and so No Two Days evolved. It was important for me to create a business which was flexible and as I am freelance this was a perfect solution - plus I absolutely love what I do!" As someone with a successful commercial background Abbey understands that creating a window display is more than just making something look attractive "...although obviously that's important, ultimately what you are trying to achieve as a shop owner is more sales, whether it's attracting new clients, maintaining existing clients or increasing sales then I understand that. A shop's window is the best daily advertisement for a business and it has to work hard by creating interest and drawing people in to the shop - the hard part of making a sale once a customer is in the shop is then down to the staff, although the internal layout can also have an effect on how consumers spend once in store. However as I have a commercial background I can offer advice and marketing solutions to compliment the visual merchandising services and I have found this to be a useful add on for my business, especially in this climate where you need something extra special to make people sit up and take notice of your business!". Abbey specialise in working with independent retailers where she can best utilise her creative and commercial skills and enjoys working with

people who's passion for what they do matches hers, "In this area we are really fortunate to have some excellent independent retailers, offering unique brands and great customer service and I am fascinated by what encourages people to spend their money once in store. It's very competitive for independent businesses what with the mainstream high street shops and online discount stores, however consumers want a point of difference and although are more careful how they are spending I think people are leaning towards buying better quality, unique pieces which you don't always get on the high street. It's all down to maximising what you have and a window display is a stores greatest daily advertisement." Some of the comments Abbey regularly hears after completing a window display are "I never noticed this shop before" and "I only came in because of the window display" so it just shows that refreshing a window display can have a positive impact on your business and she finishes "I am very passionate about creating window displays which communicates to an audience, enhances the voice of the brand and increases footfall and awareness of that retailer. It’s hugely rewarding knowing something I have created has the potential to have a direct impact on the success of a retailer and whether I am dressing a minimalist boutique window or designing and creating a dress made from fabric off-cuts, I am completely enthralled by the task in hand and feel extremely fortunate to have found a career which I love!". reference is ‘Catherine Deneuve in Belle de Jour, shot by Helmut Newton ewton’’. The creative look is achieved using bright products like M.A.C’s Pro Chromalines in red, yello ellow w and cyan. “It’s been a sea of grey and monochromes so far this season so it’s great to see colour and have some fun,” Garland enthuses. “I love working with Vivienne Westwood because as a make-up artist it’s all about ideas and I can go in there and really open up the toybox, throw all the toys in the air and see what sticks!” The show is due to start at 2pm and two late-running models sprint in at 2.05pm but Garland isn’ isn’t fazed. Four hairdressers, two make-up artists and two nail artists on each model and they’re ready in five minutes flat.

Mar ary y Katrantz Katrantzou US Vogue editor Anna Wintour is on the front row so the pressure is on for “beautiful superskin” that complements the clothes. The late-running Westwood show means Garland doesn’’t arrive until 3pm and it’s a 4pm show doesn but her proficient team has everything in hand and Garland greets the crowd of beauty press waiting to jot the show inspiration in their notepads, Tweet the looks and take videos of make-up artists in action. As well as overseeing the final make-up looks, Garland is story-teller of the designer’s vision. “I deal with the press, ensuring journalists get what they need for the story and talk about the products we’ve used to create the look,” she explains. “I’ve worked with M.A.C for so many years, they will make me a product if I need something specific.” Katrantzou’s busy designs are all about architecture and landscapes so Garland explains she’s keeping the make-up very pure. There’s an intriguing ‘ghostliness to models’ faces, created with a cellophanelook gloss on eyes and by highlighting bone structure to reflect under the high beam of the catwalk lights.

Marios Schwab It’s Garland’s last show of the day and her energy hasn’t waned in the slightest. The call-time is 5.30pm and she’s flaunting a glossy manicure to beauty journalists that she’s managed to squeeze in between shows. “We’ve got a bit of a skin eruption going at Fashion Week so we’re bringing out the M.A.C Mineralize Concealer,” Garland teases, referring to the models’ skin that’s already feeling the strain of Fashion Week. She pulls out an iPhone from her Celine bag of essentials to reveal a snapshot of a beautiful medieval woman, the inspiration for the show. “It’s all about skin sculpture but in a much more modern way, way,” she reveals. “It’s medieval futurism!” The show time may be 8.30pm but it’s running 40 minutes late and Garland never packs up her make-up kit until the finale when the models take their final catwalk. But the show isn’t over for Garland. A quick recharge and then the action continues at Paris Fashion Week, but she shows no sign of backstage fatigue, saying: “I’m alongside make-up artists that have worked with me for years. They know what the Val-ism is - ‘Give me your magic!’”

Q&A

WITH THE AWARD WINNING DENTIST

DR SHAMEEK POPAT

WE CONTINUE OUR SERIES OF READER’S QUESTIONS WITH OUR AWARD WINNING DENTIST DR SHAMEEK POPAT. I FOR ONE AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE HOUR GOING FORWARD AND HAVING MORE DAYLIGHT AND HOPING THAT WE GET SOME RELIEF FROM THIS RAIN! I AM ALSO JUDGING THE AESTHETIC AWARDS ON THE 22ND MARCH IN LONDON SO SHOULD BE GREAT TO SEE SOME BEAUTIFUL DENTAL WORK BY MY PEERS. NOW TO THE CLINICAL SIDE OF THE Q&A Q. What are dental implants, are they screwed into your jaw or your tooth roots? A. I am going to concentrate this month’s edition on Dental Implants and try and give you basic understanding on dentistry’s exciting field. I have touched on the subject in previous editorials but am happy to go over it again as it’s an exciting field. Q. Can implants always be used to replace missing teeth? A. Regardless of the cause of tooth loss, dental implants can be a simple, proven lasting solution for restoring teeth. After a thorough examination of your medical history, your dentist can advise you whether dental implants may be the right solution for you. There is no upper age limit. Nevertheless, it does depend on the condition of the bone in your jaw. Your dentist will arrange for a number of special tests to find

out the amount of bone still there. If there is not enough, it may be possible for the bone to be built up by grafting bone into the area first. This will be an extra procedure prior to placing the implant. Also, heavy alcohol consumption, smoking, diabetes or other clinical conditions may interfere with an implants integration process and its ultimate long term success. Patients who grind their teeth at night must also undertake a careful evaluation with their dentist. Q. Do Implants hurt? A.The big question! Placing the implant means a small operation and can be performed using a simple local anaesthetic, and sometimes with sedation if you are nervous. Sometimes the dentist may need to use general anaesthetic for complex cases. You will not feel any pain during the procedure but you may feel discomfort during the

week after the surgery. Q. How long does the treatment take? A. Your dentist will be able to give you a rough timetable before the treatment starts but usually the permanent teeth are fitted 3-6 months after the implants are put in. In a minority of cases, it may take up to a year for the implant to fully integrate with the bone. Q. How long do they last? A. How long implants and the new teeth last depends primarily on how well your teeth are cared for. If you have good oral hygiene, including good home care and regular dental re care visits, your implants can lasts for many years, possibly up to an entire lifetime. Q. Is there any complication or risk? A. Careful preparation and

implementation of implant treatment reduces risk to a minimum. However, Implant treatment is a surgical procedure and as such it is associated with certain risks. Under normal circumstances, the swelling and mild pain which may occur often disappear after a few days. Periodontitis (gum disease), poor oral hygiene, inadequate wound healing, smoking,or serious general disease (e.g. diabetes) may be a contraindication for dental implants. Your dentist will be glad to provide you with information about potential complications and risks. Q. Is the treatment expensive? A. Unfortunately, yes. However, in many situations the cost is only a little more than the cost of more conventional treatment with crowns and bridges. Over the longer term, implants are usually a more cost effective and satisfactory option. There are advantages to having an implant. An implant to replace a single tooth avoids the need to cut down teeth either side for crowns to support a bridge. Implants can also help anchor a denture better so they do not move around. However, it is best to discuss the different treatment options with your dentist and decide on what suits you best and fits with your budget.

MANE ATTRACTION IF YOU HAVE FINE OR THINNING HAIR BUT WANT IT THICKER, OR SHORT HAIR AND WOULD LOVE IT TO BE LONGER, REVOLUTIONARY HAIR EXTENSIONS & HAIR LOSS SOLUTIONS FROM RAPUNZEL IN MARLOW COULD BE THE ANSWER!

G

one are the knotted and twisted roots and obviously fake, over-long styles that have given hair extensions a bad name in the past. Rapunzel's extension technology means you can totally transform your hair in as little as an hour, with no damage. At Rapunzel in Marlow they only use beautiful silkey genuine European human hair, and keep every hair colour you can imagine in stock, so your hair is perfectly matched. So how can you spot good hair extensions? The truth is, like good cosmetic surgery - you can't. There a lot of ways to attach extensions, many of which can cause terrible damage especially when done by an un-skilled technician. Rapunzel Ltd pride themselves in only having highly skilled professionals in the team, and only using systems that don't cause damage to your own hair. One of the latest systems being a small flat keratin sleeve that folds around your hair to form a flat totally undetactable bond that won't break or put any strain on your own hair.. The end result is perfect for adding volume and length and for experimenting with highlights or lowlights without the commitment of permanent colour. Rapunzel Ltd in Marlow quote 'we can totally transform a head of hair in an hour, turning limp locks into a mane of glossy hair.' So its not surprising the demand for these luscious locks is growing. BRING ON

SPRING

SKIN TIME TO BARE YOUR SPRING SKIN WITH PRIDE. LISA HAYNES REVEALS HOW TO GET YOUR GLOW BACK.

he recent mini-heatwave caught us all off guard. But along with the ice creams and sunbathing sessions came the annual horror of baring skin for the first time. Sales of SOS fake tan at Debenhams rocketed by 105% in reaction to the freakish warm weather. So next time the sun rears its head, be prepared with a spring skin routine. Transform those frosty, pasty arms and legs into glowing summer-ready limbs that don’t look like they’ve been hidden away in opaque tights and woolly cardigans for months. It’s time to glow and go with our foolproof skincare guide.

T

REVIVE SKIN

If your skin has been in hibernation under snuggly duvets and winter layers, it’s time for a spring wake-up call. Kick-start your morning with a dry body brushing session prior to your shower. Brushing in circular motions will also remove redundant dry, dead skin cells. “Dry body brushing increases circulation and brings nutrients to the skin’s surface for healthy-looking skin,” explains Jane Calderwood, beauty therapist at Champneys. “It also gives an uplifting feeling, helps to shake off sleep and prepares you for the day ahead.” Ditch any aromas that make you feel drowsy and use an invigorating shower gel with uplifting fragrances to start your day on a high. “Choose fresh, light spring smells,” Calderwood advises. “Tangy products like Champneys’ Citrus Blush range are perfect for this time of year as they’re uplifting and energising, with notes of ginger, grapefruit, lemon and vanilla.” SILKY SMOOTH

Radiant skin requires more than just a hero moisturising product. “The first step towards silky soft skin is to exfoliate once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells from the skin’s surface,” explains Dr Sue Mayou, cosmetic dermatologist and Aveeno consultant. “This helps to leave the skin smooth and improves light reflection off the surface which gives a healthy glow and a good base on which to apply a moisturiser.” If you want silky skin, it’s important to adopt a religiously regular moisturising regime to maximise hydration - random and slapdash applications just won’t do. Mayou recommends choosing a light moisturiser or even a spritz lotion that will sink in easily with 66

MARCH2013

minimum effort. “If you have dry or sensitive skin, certain areas like elbows, knees and ankles are likely to be drier than others, so pay particular attention to them when moisturising,” she suggests. During the skin-baring season, hair removal methods like shaving go up a notch. For perfect pins, avoid irritated skin by using lukewarm water and moisturising afterwards. GET THE GLOW

You don’t need to dash out for an uber-dark spray tan whenever sunshine’s on the way. A light self-tan is all you need to look like a naturally more golden delicious version of yourself. For super-subtle try a gradual tan, but you may need to take extra care with the application, warns Sienna X spray tan guru James Harknett. “The results look great but the lotion is often colourless, so be wary of those without a guide colour take time and make sure you cover everywhere.” If your self-tan lotion looks too dark, Harknett recommends mixing with a moisturiser to ease yourself into spring, and always use a tanning mitt for an even application. Dry body mists are another speedy way to achieve a spring glow. Moisturise first avoiding anything too oily or thick - and then spray evenly. For a finishing touch, give your skin an enviable spring sheen with a shimmer. Harknett says: “Look for products that contain subtle shimmer particles so you end up looking more spring goddess than Christmas decoration.”

''When I finished Alizonne my confidence went through the roof. I feel more accepted. My health has really improved, I'm even walking to work which is 5 miles away! Since finishing the program I have found that I can maintain my weight loss with the tools that I have learnt on the program. Before treatment

Jane Mason a 43-year-old mother,

weighed 15st and 2lbs when she approached Alizonne after initially seeking advice on Bariatric weight loss surgery. She had a BMI of 42.8 and was advised by Alizonne that they could help her lose weight but that, in order to do so, she would have to be prepared to rigidly follow the Alizonne diet programme. Following the treatment and after care guidance from the group, she went from a size 22 to a size 8 in 32 weeks, dropping 7st and 7lbs giving her a final BMI of 24.

I'm enjoying life much more being slimmer" Jane says, ''I tried to lose weight many times before, but without success. What I needed was someone to be strict with me and so signed up to the doctor supervised, clinic-led Alizonne weight loss programme. Working through the phases, I started on five sachets a day plus veg or salad at lunch and dinner. Each week I also had two treatments: an ultrasound that directly targets loose skin, and a connective tissue treatment that helps to flush the fat from your cells and tone your skin. I lost 9lbs the first week, a stone and a half in four weeks, and in just over seven months I'd lost over seven stone! Now I feel so healthy and I've avoided surgery."

hen the Victorians first dreamt of growing exotic plants in glass houses they could hardly have imagined that they were starting a lifestyle trend that continues to this day. Today, the immensely elegant glass buildings of yesteryear are designed from state of the art materials to create living spaces that are used for everything from dining rooms to kitchens, from playrooms to gyms and kitchens to offices. Homeowners have conservatories that are separated by doors from the rest of the house whilst others create vast openings that allow the conservatory extension to blend seamlessly with the home’s interior. Replica Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian models finished with detailed architectural features compete for popularity with stunningly contemporary glass rooms where the emphasis is on creating impact from clean, simple forms. But how exactly do you make the leap from the building of your

dreams to the reality you can live in every day? Speak to any homeowner that has embarked on a building project and they will almost certainly be able to regale you with enough horror stories of when things have gone wrong to put you off for good. Certainly building a conservatory is a major building project which is why you need to find a company that has a proven track record, shares your vision, your enthusiasm and, most importantly, appreciates your budget and is prepared to work with you to minimise any possible disruption. Hazlemere Conservatories is a High Wycombe based conservatory specialist with a penchant for helping their customers create distinctive conservatories and so know that the dream doesn’t always match

the reality. “During the 80’s and a large part of the 90’s conservatories were being stuck on to what seemed like just about everyone’s houses. Looking at many of the conservatories that were built during this era, you could perhaps be forgiven for thinking they’ve been there far longer. However building materials evolve and in the last 10 years there has been a considerable step-change in the quality of conservatories that are available. Today’s buildings should look good well into the future as long as they are designed and built with modern materials as an integral part of your home.” According to Hazlemere, one of the crucial keys to a successful conservatory or orangery build is about determining from the outset if you expect to use the

room all year round. If you do then heating it needs to be as big a consideration as keeping it cool in the summer. With advances in glass and framing technology it is indeed possible for your conservatory or orangery to provide a snug retreat in the winter and a cool haven in the summer but the specification has to be right. The only way for a company to determine what your conservatory’s exact specification needs to be is to conduct a detailed site survey which will take into account the position of the conservatory in relation to both your home and the direction of the sun upon it. Nowadays, specialised glazing is available that reflects the sun’s heat and is particularly useful in South facing conservatories or orangeries. Tinted glass is also an important consideration if you want to use your conservatory to watch television or use a computer. Effective opening vents in the ceiling of the conservatory will allow hot air in the summer months to escape quickly. These essential vents can be manually or electrically operated and some

p70-BUCKS-HAZLEMERE__ 18/03/2013 13:37 Page 2

&

house garden

companies offer automatic rain detectors to ensure vents close as soon as it begins to rain. Installing electrics for a fan will help to disperse warm air upwards in the summer but can also be reversed in the winter to keep the warm air down rather than letting it escape upwards. Heat extractors are a highly effective way of removing warm air at the hottest times of the year and help to control humidity. Air exchange systems work in a similar way but with the added benefit of bringing warm air back into the building as well. Opting for air conditioning is always an option although it can be expensive to run and will require more on-going maintenance. The professionals at Hazlemere Conservatories advise that with

so much glass in a conservatory (how energy efficient the specification), some heat loss is inevitable, however by selecting the best type of sealed units available, this can be minimised to ensure that you can use your orangery or conservatory all year round. Just as glass can be specified to reflect the sun’s heat, there are also reflective coatings that keep the heat inside a conservatory which is invaluable in colder north facing buildings. You need to consider how you will heat your conservatory before you begin to ensure relevant works are carried out as the building work progresses. To heat your conservatory you can opt to extend your existing central heating system or you can install an independent heating system

just for the new area. If you do plan to extend your existing central heating then you should install individual room thermostats to ensure that you can increase the heat in the cooler conservatory area when you need it without affecting the heating in the rest of the house. If you opt for an independent heating source then consider low level wall mounted radiators or underfloor heating for the best aesthetic effect, both of which are easily installed as part of the main build programme. Whilst the choices to be made are undoubtedly complex, an experienced conservatory company will be able to guide you through the best combination of options for your particular conservatory and

ensure that the cost of making it useable all year round is built in to your quote from outset and thus avoid adding ‘extras’ in at a later stage. By taking the time to ensure that you have considered all of the available options you stand a good chance of having your dream conservatory and enjoying the glass house legacy the Victorians left us. Hazlemere Conservatories is a specialist division of the Hazlemere Group in High Wycombe and specialise in designing, manufacturing and installing high quality, custom-built double glazed conservatories, glass extensions, orangeries and Loggia in both aluminium and PVCu. FARROW & BALL ANNOUNCES THE KEY COLOURS FOR 2013 COLOUR IN 2013 WILL CREATE A FEELING OF FLOW AND CONTINUITY TRANSFORMING HOMES INTO A NURTURING REFUGE. ALTHOUGH STRIKINGLY DIFFERENT SHADES, FARROW & BALL’S CORNFORTH WHITE, FRENCH GRAY, STONE BLUE AND BLACK BLUE CAN ALL BE USED TO CREATE THESE HARMONIOUS, SLIGHTLY NOSTALGIC, DECORATING SCHEMES. BLACK BLUE

Black Blue is full of poise and drama; when used in place of whites it becomes the neutral creating a wistful romantic vision. Layer shades of black – use Black Blue on the walls and Pitch Black on the woodwork, but ensure accent colours are hugely contrasting. Pretty Middleton Pink and ethereal Blackened work perfectly on furniture or ceilings. This slightly distorted use of colour feels very modern, but by layering and accenting continues to create a velvety fl ow in the home. FRENCH GRAY

With its underlying organic quality, multi-faceted green-grey, French Gray, contains all the nuances of the natural world. Particularly elegant when used on panelling, French Gray can be effective in both traditional and more contemporary settings. French Gray should be combined with green based neutrals like Lime White and Old White for a comforting feel; or contrasted with Hound Lemon and Hardwick White for a more edgy look. French Gray has a magical, timeless character perfect for decoration in 2013. STONE BLUE

For a more sentimental, homely feel combine rich Stone Blue, with Radicchio and Cooking Apple Green to create a cheerful look. Stone Blue is also a fantastic accent colour to a neutral backdrop like Wimborne White. This strong, uncomplicated colour is particularly effective when used on a screen or room divider. Stone Blue is bright and optimistic with a slight rural charm. CORNFORTH WHITE

Pair Cornforth White, a light grey, with Strong White and All White to create a tonal look within a home. The use of subtly different whites, off-whites and greys will create really fl exible spaces in the home, with light and fl ow throughout. This simple idea of laying one tone upon another is easy to achieve, and creates a hushed, soothing environment illuminating the space. Well, not quite, but like Victor Kiam - the US businessman who was so impressed by a shaver he bought Remington and famously used it as his advertising slogan- Simon bought a stake in Cyrus because he was wowed by the CD player he bought second hand from an advert in Loot. “I’ve always loved music, and used to try out different bits of hi fi to see what best brought my CD collection to life. The Cyrus CD player had been my favourite. When I found out that Cyrus was being sold back in 2004, I put myself forward to advise the management team on how to buy it. I had

My aim as MD is to turn Cyrus from one of music’s best kept secrets, into a brand that is a standard bearer for music around the globe”. ome years ago I had a large oil-on-canvas portrait of a lady, obviously of noble background and, in her day – that is of the later 17century – of considerable beauty. It was a fine example of a typical set piece of time; she is holding, rather dramatically, a scantily clad child who clearly wants to play with a small dog, and all are within swathes of luxurious drapes. In a well-preserved condition and in its original carved wood and gilt frame, it was not long before it caught the eye of someone who recognises a good picture. A deal was struck and the picture was delivered and hung in a place just made for it. And so began one of those great friendships that grow from common interests, although this buyer had enjoyed a few more interests than I, and I thought mine were varied enough. The customer and later to become friend was Laszlo Grof, a beguiling Hungarian who arrived in England in 1956 and without any English found employment first as a cook and then as a steel worker in an iron foundry, then into the mine as an explosives expert. Next came a spell as a furniture maker for Messrs Gomme in High Wycombe working on their famous ‘G Plan’ range, before turning his hand to running his own chicken farm. Settling down to become a qualified accountant Laszlo then went to Oxford to receive a degree with honours in history and has just completed his 8th tour of Transylvania lecturing on his favourite subject, the history of cartography. In this field Laszlo is one of the leading authorities on ancient maps with a collection envied by museums and connoisseurs all over the world. In the field of music he is a keen jazz buff and has been in the audience on several occasions 76

remarked on two contemporary paintings hanging in the same room as the lady with the child and dog. They had an instant appeal in the colourful and atmospheric representation of rural Hungary, full of light and shadows. Zoltan explained that the Impressionist movement had and still has an important influence in Hungary and a leading exponent is the artist Zoltan Grof – no relation – who painted the two I was admiring.

when I’ve been playing, both with a small group and with the Sticky Wicket Big Band Drum Spectacular which we put on at The Stables in Wavenden, the jazz Mecca established by the

late and much lamented John Dankworth and his still-singing wife the fabulous Cleo Lane. So time spent with Laszlo is never silent and while visiting him last year I noticed and

Zoltan’s technique of using enamel-oil, give his paintings the power of colour achieved by traditional oils, with the luminescence of light and shade created by the modern medium of lacenamel. Zolton developed his skills and love of the medium as a student. The impressionist traditions of the famous Hungarian Nagybanya School which was founded as an artist’s colony in 1896 by Simon Hollosy, was the spark from which Zoltan developed his passion and skills to produce the vibrant and atmospheric paintings. In 2001 Zoltan was commissioned to create 24 large scale pictures for UNESCO, each commemorating the cities, towns and villages given World UNESCO status. His paintings are in numerous private collections in Hungary and abroad. At the time of writing we are holding an exhibition of Zoltan’s work in the grand Bedford Room at Woburn Abbey, the first we hope of many. We all meet fascinating people from time to time but there can be few occupations like mine where you have the opportunity to learn just how fascinating they really are and how they act as catalysts for other people with varying talents in such disparate fields.

CRAFTSMEN IN PAINT AND PAPER

A

t Farrow & Ball we are devoted to producing unparalleled paints and wallpapers that transform homes around the world. We are paint perfectionists, creating unmatched paint colours using only the finest ingredients and age-old methods which have withstood the test of time and the passage of many a fickle fad. Our painted wallpapers are unique, created using our own paints traditionally trough or block printed onto ground papers to give them an extraordinary texture and appearance. Our meticulous approach to producing paint and wallpaper is rooted in our past. Farrow & Ball paints are born and bred in Dorset, England, in the same small town we’ve resided in since John Farrow, and fellow paint pioneer Richard Ball first founded the company. From small beginnings their reputation for quality quickly spread until the pair were supplying paint to the Admiralty and the War Office. The company bucked the trend towards cheaper, acrylic paints with high levels of plastic, in favour of the original formulations and natural ingredients that had fared so well. Over the years Farrow & Ball has been loved and appreciated by a dedicated and growing group of loyal customers all over the world who recognised the difference that attention to detail, quality ingredients and craftsmanship made. Today, our quest to create unmatchable products continues. Over the years we have grown our range of paint finishes, and we’ve added wallpapers to our portfolio, but we’ve never forgotten our past. We may have over fourty showrooms as far and wide as New York, Paris and London, but every batch of paint or wallpaper, however large or small, is still made in our factory in Dorset, England. There is true alchemy to our paints. It’s the high levels of pigment, rich resin binders, and the high refractory nature of our key ingredients that produces that signature 80

immersive depth of colour. To ensure our paint meets our obsessively high requirements we scrupulously test every batch before it even reaches the tin. We believe paint is more than a veneer. There’s a reason Borrowed Light® is the precise colour of sunlight across shade. With interior and exterior, modern and traditional finishes available, our paints are created to shape homes. They’re water based and kind to the environment too, proving that beauty doesn’t have to cost the earth. Wallpapers are generally made using ink. Not ours. We use our own traditionally created waterbased paint to create the perfect print. Our dedicated team of wallpaper craftsmen work tirelessly to produce unique papers using our paint, and traditional block and trough methods. With florals, damasks, stripes and geometric patterns, each design is inspired from archives of timeless and evocative wallpaper, fabric and pattern from around the world. Farrow & Ball is unmatched. Taking great pride in focusing on what we do best: producing unparalleled paints and wallpapers to grace the walls of homes around the world. ARE YOU SLEEPING ON THE RIGHT BED? he right bed is extremely important to our health and wellbeing because our sleeping environment will affect the quality of our sleep – which in turn has a big effect on how well we feel, both physically and psychologically. A bed with the correct support, comfort and space will ensure you wake less, move about less, are less disturbed by your partner and are less likely to wake up feeling tired or aching.

T

So, what is the right bed? It’s not easy to make specific recommendations. There’s such a huge choice on the market place and the key deciding factor – is it comfortable – is such a subjective measure. “All we can do is give people an overview of the different types of bed available and tips on how to go about the process of choosing the right bed for them,” explains Sleep Council spokesperson Jessica Alexander. The Sleep Council was set up to provide an independent source of advice on bed buying – as well as to raise awareness of the importance of getting a good night’s sleep to health and wellbeing. According to The Sleep Council, Goldilocks had the right idea: the right bed’s neither too soft nor too hard – but it suits everyone’s very individual needs. First and foremost it must give you correct support and comfort – but individuals might also have to consider factors such as back pain, allergies, breathing problems, available budget, whether a type of mattress makes you too hot, storage or space requirements: not to mention style preferences. Size is important. The most common British double bed size of 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in (135cm x 190cm) really isn’t big enough for two to sleep well without disturbing each other: studies have shown that more space – even a slight move up to a 5ft x 6ft 6in (150cm x 200cm) King size bed – can make a lot of difference to night-time comfort. Always consider both the mattress and its support, whether divan base or

82

MARCH2013

bedstead. They work together to create the overall feel and performance of a bed, with different combinations producing differing results. If you are not buying a base and mattress from the same supplier, make sure the mattress is suitable for use with the type of support you are considering: if you don’t, lack of durability could be a problem, with no comeback to the supplier. There are many types – and prices of beds – from which to choose, each offering their own features and benefits. Mattresses come with various types of internal spring unit – open coil, pocket sprung or continuous springing – in ordinary foam, visco-elastic or latex foam, filled with cotton or other fibres (futons!). You should spend as much as you can afford on a new bed – it’s probably one of the most important investments you’ll make, not just for your home but also for your own wellbeing! Remember, every £100 you spend represents just 2.7p a night over 10 years. Once you’ve got your new bed, do remember that it won’t stay wonderful forever – beds get a lot of wear and tear! Over time, your comfort and support needs change, too. Do the Bed MOT test once a year – National Bed Month, which runs throughout March, is a good time to consider the state of your bed and your sleep and comfort quality. Visit www.sleepcouncil.com to take the Bed MOT, New Bed Profile, reach bed-buying and sleep tips, and watch videos that help people sleep better or select the right bed for them. The Sleep Council is a generic organisation which seeks to promote the importance of a good night’s sleep to health and wellbeing and the advantages associated with a comfortable bed, regularly replaced. In addition to advice on how to get a good night’s sleep, the Sleep Council provides tips on choosing the right bed. The Sleep Council is funded by the bed industry.

CRAIG VAN DER MEER AT THE

GARDEN

ROOM C

raig has been behind the stoves at Stoke Place for almost 5 years having originally joined as Sous Chef. Previously Craig spent some time at the then 3 Rosette Langshott Manor and the Frimley Hall Hotel and Spa both in Surrey. Craig is not a local (yet) and originally hails from South Africa and before coming to our shores was Sous Chef at the world famous, 5 star Arabella Hotel and Spa set within the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve, near Cape Town. After twelve months as Sous Chef and having joined Stoke Place during an extremely diďŹƒcult recession it was naturally time for Craig to assume full command of the Kitchens. Stoke Place had benefited from an extensive refurbishment over the past few years and whilst the development of the property was on-going, Craig was tasked with implementing a first class food and beverage product as well as establishing trade to support this. Craig has received 3 AA Rosettes within 18 months of joining the AA restaurant guide as well as featuring within The Good Food Guide and The Michelin Guide for Great Britain and Ireland. Craig has developed a superb food oering, befitting a grand country house however (like the design of the hotel) this is tempered with a modern and inventive twist. Stoke Place goes from strength to strength playing host to Residential Meetings, Weddings, Private Events and Afternoon Teas however his real set and showcase is his awarding winning Garden Room Restaurant. Craig's food is modern British, inventive and seasonal. Service is relaxed, friendly and pitched at putting guests at ease. Craig's take on the traditional country house menu is served with an artful twist. Seasonal and locally sourced ingredients are used to create interesting versions of traditional fare. When Craig is not at the Stoves (which is not very often) you are very likely to find him at the local Golf course. Stoke Green Stoke Poges, Buckinghamshire SL2 4HT 01753 534790

THE ULTIMATE LUXURY CHOCOLATE GIFT FOR EASTER What do you do if you really want something special and just can’t find it? When all you yearn for is just the best of its kind in the world - and no-one seems to have produced it; at least not to the standard you desire? f you are Roy and Tracey Jones you initially scour the earth for a key ingredient and, when you have finally tracked it down, you create what you were looking for in the first place - the world’s finest luxury chocolate experience. “I wanted to buy a very special present for a very special person on a very special day - her 40th birthday,” explains Tracey. “Like me she is a chocoholic! I went to the top-end departments stores and even some of the little luxury chocolate boutiques but just could not find what I wanted. There is a lot of nice chocolate about, of course, but, I don’t know, there was always something missing. It was very frustrating and in the end I bought her something else entirely. ”That was the beginning but by no means the end of a two year journey which has reached a triumphant conclusion with the launch of ‘the Chocolate’ Roy and Tracey’s new business dedicated to producing ‘the best luxury chocolate experience in the world.’

I

What is it ? In its simplest form we are talking about an amazing ‘experience’. Handmade truffles using an award winning, secret recipe Italian chocolate, filled with champagne, flaked with edible 24-carat gold all enclosed within a bespoke handcrafted boutique box encrusted with more than 450 Swarovski Crystals inside and out. Also made by hand no two of these boxes will ever be the same. The chocolate itself is 63% Toscano Black sourced from a tiny artisan chocolate maker based just outside historic Pisa. The cocoa beans are refined using a traditional granite stone mill and the result has been judged by the Academy of Chocolate as officially the best in the world. What experts call the ganache - basically the mixture of cocoa, cream and a variety of other ingredients to form what consumers think of as, well, the chocolate – that forms ‘the Chocolate’ is a closely guarded secret but Roy and Tracey are happy to confirm that there are several glasses of champagne added to the normal recipe. “As we make everything ourselves we can, of course, 90

produce ‘the Chocolate’ without alcohol if required,” commented Tracey. You Eat the Gold? It’s the world’s most expensive foodstuff and has been eaten for millennia. Although the Ancient Egyptians believed it gave them immortality no such claims are made for ‘the Chocolate.’ (yet). However other authorities do claim that gold has many attributes when eaten, including generating a higher IQ, managing rheumatoid arthritis, developing mystic power and contributing to a long and healthy life. More seriously it is authorised for use in food products in both Europe and the USA. High quality chocolate also has its enthusiasts. They claim that chocolate with over 60% cocoa content (‘the Chocolate’ has 63%) reduces blood pressure, decreases the chance of both diabetes and heart attack, improves the memory and even eases a persistent cough amongst a plethora of other attributes. Be that as it may the fact remains that ‘the Chocolate’ has a fantastic taste that will exceed the expectations of the wildest choccie enthusiast. And the memory of the experience will last and last. The Products Available online at www.the-chocolate.com and and seasonally at Harrods, the Boutique Box contains 15 chocolates minimum and a weight of 200 grammes (shown above). It retails at £190 including postage and packing. Delivery of this unique hand-made product is within five days or can be expressed for specific delivery date. Various box designs starting from £20 delivered. Available online and seasonally at Harrods For more information on the Chocolate visit: www.the-chocolate.com
