Foodies Festival – the UK’s biggest touring celebrity food and music festival series – is coming to St Albans for the very first time, serving up a star-studded lineup of celebrity chefs and chart-topping music stars, including Natalie Imbruglia and Scouting For Girls.

Known as Gastro-Glastonbury, Foodies will visit Oaklands, St Albans, from 2nd – 4th June. Featuring live cooking demonstrations from top chefs drawn from the ranks of MasterChef, Great British Bake Off and Great British Menu, plus top-rated Michelin-starred and award-winning chefs.

For centuries, humans have used artforms as a vehicle for communicating in a way that words alone can’t quite manage. In 2023, Chiltern Arts brings us the theme of Love, Loss and the Passage of Time, exploring these concepts through music, visual art and literature with the usual array of events and top-quality artists coming to venues across the area.

Chiltern Arts opened their 2023 programme in early March with a Winter Warmer: three days of events in Berkhamsted, Great Missenden and Henley, featuring the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke, Beethoven’s String Quartets and choral music that traced the life of Herbert Howells.

In 2015, being the inquisitive type, Oliver decided to replace the dead battery in his fairly pricey, branded watch. When he opened

it up however, he discovered a disappointing reality. Staring back at him was a hollow case with an underwhelming, plastic quartz movement inside.

The watch felt heartless and Oliver was sure he could make something better.

The season culminates with a week of outstanding concerts as the Chilterns once again become home to

artists of the highest calibre with the Festival taking place 13th–20th May. Critically-acclaimed tenor James Gilchrist and BBC Young Musician of the Year 2022 finalist Jaren Ziegler join musicians from The Purcell School for an evening that features Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings and Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. Wycombe Abbey hosts a Shakespeare Day, with concerts from musicians including tenor Ed Lyon, soprano Rowan Pierce, countertenor Robin Blaze and lutenist Elizabeth Kenny

A continuing partnership with the Worshipful Company of Musicians sees two lunchtime concerts from young ensembles: lively dances and stories from the fantastic Endelienta Baroque, and glorious brass arrangements from Matilda Lloyd’s outstanding quintet, the Solus Trumpet Ensemble.

Other events during the festival week include a film screening of The Red Violin at The Elgiva Theatre in Chesham, dinner on the Thames with guitarist Craig Ogden (Henley), an evening exploring 500 years of musical legacies with The King’s Singers (Marlow), a musical snapshot of the time that Brahms spent with the Schumanns from Echor Music (Berkhamsted), Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil (Vespers) from the Choir of King’s College, London in Dorchester Abbey and a night of music and words from the City of London Sinfonia and actor Barnaby Taylor in Beaconsfield to close the season.

Menopause in the workplaceis change coming?

Jo Davis, B P Collins’ employment partner and founder of the firm’s HR consultancy, HR2Help, warns that the level of knowledge surrounding the effect of the menopause on women’s careers remains limited, despite menopausal women being the fastest growing workforce demographic.

Menopause and discrimination

Discrimination in the workplace can take many forms, ranging from office banter to uniformly applying a policy across the whole workforce, which affects a menopausal person more acutely. One of the major safeguards against employee discrimination lies within the Equality Act which has a variety of “protected characteristics.”

Menopause, however, is not a protected characteristic and seems unlikely to become one. In January 2023, the government said it would not launch a consultation on amending the Equality Act to introduce a new protected characteristic of menopause, nor would it legislate for “a duty to provide reasonable adjustments for menopausal employees”. It said that such a move could have, “unintended consequences which may inadvertently create…discrimination risks towards men.”

Employees who are treated less favourably than their colleagues because of menopausal symptoms, may instead be able to rely on the protected characteristics of sex, age and/or disability. For disability in particular, it is important to note that while many menopausal employees living with menopause might not think of themselves as disabled, a disability can be any condition which has a substantial, long-term, adverse effect on someone’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities. So, although menopause doesn’t come with a standard list of symptoms, the cumulative effect of those symptoms can nonetheless amount to a disability.

Change in the workplace

According to a British Menopause Society survey, 45% of women felt their menopause symptoms had

a negative impact on their work. If there is a lack of support for menopausal women, it can mean that highly experienced and skilled employees are being pushed out of the workforce.

More widespread change may be coming though. The first ever national NHS guidance on the menopause issued last year says that menopausal women working in the health service can do their jobs from home if their symptoms require it. Flexible working patterns – including lighter duties, flexible breaks or remote working – will also be considered for those struggling with symptoms. Perhaps the private sector will follow suit and enable employees to manage their symptoms in this way too. But in the meantime, employers should have a duty to create an inclusive work environment and to prevent menopausal women from leaving, so a menopause policy is definitely worth considering.

CHEF LAURIE GEAR April recipe & kitchen news

April really is the time of year that every chef loves as exciting new fresh and vibrant produce starts to flow into the kitchen and finally we are beginning to be spoiled for choice after the long winter. Popularity of asparagus has surged over the years and this recipe also incorporates some wild garlic leaf which is to be found adorning our hedgerows but can be replaced with young spinach to equal effect.

The upper sections and tips of asparagus are best

eaten in its simplified form cooked in boiling salted water and served with a little English butter or hollandaise sauce , with this recipe you can use the lower part of the asparagus, a swift bend and snap 3/4 of the way up is a good way to separate the two parts. To embellish further, the addition of a lightly poached free range hens egg to each bowl of soup adds depth of flavour and if you can find some English pecorino cheese grate a generous amount on top to make the perfect lunch or supper dish!

RECIPE: ASPARAGUS AND WILD GARLIC SOUP

Ingredients - Serves 6

• 400g trimmed and diced English

asparagus

• 1 clove garlic peeled and diced

• 2 banana shallots peeled and diced

• 60 g washed wild garlic leaves or baby spinach

• Juice of 1 lemon 500ml chicken or vegetable stock

• 100 ml double cream

• 200g butter cooked in a pan till nut brown in colour

• Salt to season

Method

1. Sweat the garlic and shallot then add the stock bring to a simmer

2. Add the asparagus and cook for 4 minutes

3. Add the cream and brown butter and lemon juice

4. Bring back to a simmer adding your torn garlic leaves or young spinach

5. Cook for a further 3 minutes

6. Blend until smooth

7. Pass through a fine sieve and season to taste

To Serve

You can either serve immediately into warm bowls or chill immediately to enjoy as a chilled soup or simply re heat when ready adding the poached egg and grated cheese on top if you wish and a crisp lightly chilled Riesling wine matches well to this dish.

He went in search of a partner and soon met Gordon, an industrial designer who shared his passion for doing things properly. Oliver and Gordon agreed on a plan to create a well-designed, beautifully engineered watch, with a mechanical

beating heart, for the price of a high street fashion watch.

Within 12 months, the first mechanical Marloe watch was sold and Marloe Watch Company was born. In the years since they’ve grown and evolved and are proud of the reputation they’ve built in the flourishing British watch industry.

Their name is inspired by Oliver’s hometown of Marlow on the banks of the River Thames.

What is a Declaration of Trust, and do I need one?

When is a Declaration of Trust required?

A declaration of trust can be required in various circumstances, for example:

• If you’ve bought a property with someone else: For couples that buy a property together, a declaration of trust can clearly set out everyone’s financial contribution. In the event of the property being sold, a relationship breaking down, or the death of one of the parties, the entitlement and share of equity is clearly defined.

• If you’ve received financial help: If the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’ or any other individual has supported the purchase of the property, they may eventually want their investment back. This can be clearly recorded.

With house prices and interest rates at an ultimate high, individuals and couples are looking for alternative arrangements when it comes to purchasing a property. For many, this will include buying with partners or friends, whilst others may seek financial support from parents and relatives.

What is a Declaration of Trust?

A declaration of trust is a legally binding document that records the financial arrangements between joint property owners and anyone else with financial interest in the property.

A declaration of trust is usually made at the time of buying the property. Once this document is in place, all parties will know exactly where they stand if the property is sold, or if one person wants to be bought out in the future.

If there is no declaration of trust in place, it becomes difficult to tell who is entitled to what and can often cause stressful situations, damage to relationships and potentially costly litigation.

What should be included?

As every situation is different, a qualified solicitor will help to tailor the declaration of trust to your requirements.

The document should include the following details:

• How much each party has financially contributed to the deposit.

• If there is a mortgage, how much each party will be contributing to the monthly payments and other outgoings.

• If the property is rented out, how the rent should be divided.

• If the property is sold, how the net proceeds should be divided.

• An agreed way of valuing the property.

Can I change the Declaration of Trust once it’s in place?

As your situation changes you may need to update your declaration of trust. This could be done via a deed of variation which refers to the existing declaration and adds the new clauses you need.

Note: Consent will be required from all parties involved.

What happens if you get married?

Many cohabiting couples will get married. Whilst your declaration of trust will usually still stand, in the event of a divorce the provisions of the Matrimonial Causes Act 1973 will apply. We would recommend considering a pre-nuptial or postnuptial agreement to capture the details of what should happen if you were to separate or divorce. You should also review your Will.

This incredible new collection is made using a highly durable, premium kilim weave. Traditionally crafted for nomadic tents, the weaving of kilim rugs requires huge skill, which is passed down through the generations.

The new Anatolia, Cyrus and Faro Sky Blue Rugs showcase a vibrant, yet serene, light blue in a choice of contemporary patterns. These flatwoven rugs are so durable, they are perfect for use in kitchens, under dining tables or on garden patios. Made entirely from recycled plastic bottles,

they are machine washable as well as being UV stable, stain and water-resistant.

The Anatolia Sky Blue Rug comes in six different sizes, from 150cm x 90cm up to 450cm x 300cm. Taking inspiration from Anatolia, one of the most important junctions on the Silk Road, and considered the birthplace of kilim weaving, it features traditional Bukagi and Kurt Agzi motifs.
