Family Law

Family situations can be complicated. So too are the legal issues and solutions when they break down. Family solicitors are specialists in family law and the varied issues which arise on a breakdown – to include financial, children and protective Orders. All of these are legally distinct, complex and interconnecting. Good family solicitors are at home with these issues and guiding you through what is often a daunting and confusing maze of applications and options.

However, just as all families are different, so are all solutions and often we find that other areas of law become relevant when trying to give the best advice. These areas could include company law, property law, employment law and trusts, to name but a few. You also need to be considering practical issues like amending your Will when your family arrangements are going to change.

Families rarely make arrangements with a view to separating. Informal arrangements or subsequent attempts to mislead (for example, hiding assets) need to be understood for us to advise clients how best to protect and pursue their interests. In particular, the financial landscape needs to be clear and this can be difficult, by design or not. That is where the advice of other specialists often becomes paramount.

At Kidd Rapinet we have specialists in almost every area of law and are able to draw upon informal or formal advice of other specialists without having to seek external assistance, although in the most complex of cases this may be necessary. The benefit of having a firm instructed with both family specialists and other experts under the same roof is that an early assessment of the issues can be made, saving time and money. We can also almost always deal with implementing Orders (such as transferring property) so you do not need to go elsewhere and explain your case to another firm. We can see your case through from start to finish.

As a multi-service firm, we have access to specialist solicitors covering many areas of law. You will always have a specialist family

solicitor who will be your main point of contact. They will take ownership of your case throughout. Before you instruct any firm, we also encourage you to balance the expertise you will be receiving against the costs. While junior members of staff can undertake work with supervision (usually charged for) it can often be a false economy. Experienced solicitors will get to the key issues and complexities quicker. You should feel confident in the advice which you are being given, however complex that advice might be. We would suggest that a multi-disciplinary firm with experienced experts can give you that assurance.

A Winter Warmer

2nd-4th March & Festival Week 13th-20th May

For centuries, humans have used art forms as a vehicle for communicating in a way that words alone can’t quite manage.

In 2023, Chiltern Arts brings us the theme of Love, Loss and the Passage of Time, exploring these themes through music, visual art and literature with the usual array of events and topquality artists coming to venues across the area.

The season opens in early March with a Winter Warmer: three days of events in Berkhamsted, Great Missenden and Henley. In Berkhamsted, meet Rainer Maria Rilke through the eyes of the celebrated translator and poet Mark Burrows — and afterwards pop across the road to The Gatsby to join Kathryn Tickell and Amy Thatcher for an evening of Northumbrian folk music at the popular annual Concert & Dinner event.

Head to Great Missenden to journey with the Carducci String Quartet and Endeavour and Game of Thrones star Anton Lesser through Beethoven’s String Quartets, heard interwoven with readings of the composer’s own letters to friends, lovers and family.

On Saturday 4th March Somerville College Choir, Oxford bring a programme of music exploring the British composer Herbert Howells, those he influenced and those who influenced him to Henley. The centrepiece of this glorious choral programme is Howells’ moving Requiem.

Later in the season towns and villages in the Chilterns once again become home to artists of the highest calibre with the Festival week 13th–20th May. Critically-acclaimed tenor James Gilchrist and BBC Young Musician of the Year 2022 finalist Jaren Ziegler join musicians from The Purcell School for an evening that features Britten’s Serenade for Tenor, Horn and Strings and culminates in Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nacht Musik. Wycombe Abbey hosts a Shakespeare Day, with concerts from musicians including tenor Ed Lyon, soprano Rowan Pierce countertenor Robin Blaze and lutenist Elizabeth Kenny.

Other events during the festival week include a film screening of The Red Violin at The Elgiva Theatre in Chesham, dinner on the Thames with guitarist Craig Ogden (Henley), an evening exploring 500 years of musical legacies with The King’s Singers (Marlow), a musical snapshot of the time that Brahms spent with the Schumanns from Echor Music (Berkhamsted), Rachmaninov’s All Night Vigil (Vespers) from the Choir of King’s College, London in Dorchester Abbey and a night of music and words from the City of London Sinfonia in Beaconsfield to close the season.

Money worries when going through a divorce?

Almost everyone is concerned about their finances at the moment, and if you are thinking about divorce or separation, apprehension about your financial future is likely to be uppermost in your mind.  B P Collins’ family team provides some key thoughts about how your finances may be affected and what actions you should consider:

• Whatever the reasons for the breakdown of the marriage, they rarely have an impact on the financial settlement.

• A variety of factors are considered in a financial settlement. These include income, earning capacity, standard of living during the marriage, duration of the marriage, contributions, age, but the most important consideration is usually the needs of you, your spouse and your children. This includes capital as well as income needs, so thought should be given as to whether there should be maintenance from one former spouse to another and if so, for how long.

and other investments; all properties; pensions; life insurance policies and any business interests.

• If your spouse refuses to make adequate provision during the divorce process, an application can be made to the court for interim support, so that your financial needs are met, pending the final settlement. However, before making that application, full regard needs to be given to whether your spouse can afford the same and also the costs of making that application.  Resolution by agreement is always preferable.

• All assets and resources need to be considered.  This includes liquid savings such as bank accounts

• Children should be supported until they are at least 16 or complete their secondary education.  When determining the amount payable, regard is first given to the Child Maintenance Service (CMS) assessment figures, which among other factors, takes into account the income of the parent and the number of nights spent with that parent. This should enable an agreement to be reached, but if not, an assessment can be sought from the CMS.  Provision is usually also sought for their tertiary education until completion of a first degree, an apprenticeship or other form of unpaid or low paid training and can include a gap year.

• Speak to a lawyer early on, in order to understand the likely parameters of a settlement.  This can help minimise any anxiety and feelings of uncertainty, and so could enable you and your spouse to have constructive discussions.

• It can also be helpful to discuss your situation with a financial advisor, who can help assess what you need to achieve financial security for your future.

CHEF LAURIE GEAR February recipe & kitchen news

At the end of last year, we celebrated 20 years of when we first opened our doors at the Artichoke. As you can imagine many recipes created over the years and many more plates served! The inspiration for this recipe went right back to my childhood of when I would walk to school and gaze in at the local bakery window and amongst the shelves of freshly baked breads would sit jam tarts , cake based chocolate truffles , long piped doughnut splits and my favourite a puff pastry iced custard slice the top heavily glazed in white fondant with

chocolate feathering finishing off the presentation. I simply lightened the original I saw all those years ago putting the delicious combination of poached pear and caramelised white chocolate together with a crisp filo pastry and smooth rich crème patisserie a scoop of Poire William sorbet completed the dish. We then later went on to customise this idea to suit other fruits such as fresh English strawberries and peaches when in season. A quality made vanilla ice cream would also fit the bill with this recipe to treat the Valentines in your life to a delicious dessert perfect for a special romantic occasion!

Can I remove the Executor of a Will?

The loss of a loved one is devastating and may raise questions as to what will happen to the deceased’s estate and ‘who has to do what’. If the deceased made a Will, they will have appointed an executor to manage the distribution of their estate following their passing. If you are an executor looking to remove yourself from the role or you believe that the executor of the Will is mismanaging the estate, it is useful to know under what circumstances an executor can be removed.

What is an Executor?

When an individual makes a Will, they will appoint one or more executors who have the responsibility and duty of administering/distributing the deceased’s estate in accordance with the Will. The size of the deceased’s estate which naturally differ from person to person; however, it will typically include the deceased’s property, money (wheresoever that money is located i.e. in the bank or cash at home) and personal items.

The executor’s duties are defined at section 25 of the Administration of Estates Act 1925. An executor is required to remain independent in their role and have a fiduciary duty to act in the best interest of the deceased’s estate.

Can I remove myself as the Executor of a Will?

In you are an executor of the deceased’s Will and want to remove yourself from the role, you may be curious as to whether this is even possible. As an individual does not need

your permission to appoint you as the executor of their Will, it is often the case that executors who have not been previously consulted by the deceased will not wish to take on the, often time-consuming, responsibility of being an executor.

If you do not wish to be the executor of a Will, you can “renounce” yourself from the position. You will need to do this before you have “intermeddled” in the estate and carried out activities which would imply that you have accepted the role of executor. Equally, you will ordinarily no longer be able to renounce yourself as the executor if you have proceeded to obtain a grant of probate for the deceased’s estate.

In circumstances where you have “intermeddled” or obtained a grant of probate for the deceased’s estate, you will need a Court Order to remove yourself as the executor.

If you have been appointed as an executor and are considering renouncing yourself from the position, you should seek legal advice to understand the do’s and don’ts before you make your decision.

When can I remove the Executor of a Will?

If you are concerned about the distribution of the deceased’s estate and believe that it is being mishandled by the executor you will of course want to know whether there is anything you can do to remove the executor. It is worth noting that you cannot seek to remove an executor, at least not through formal Court procedures, due to the fact that you and the executor do not have a general good relationship or because you do not like the executor.

As mentioned above, an executor can only be removed in certain circumstances and the courts will not make the decision of removing and substituting an executor lightly. To remove an executor, you will need to demonstrate that they have failed to properly carry out their duties as an executor and/or have not carried out the deceased’s wishes in accordance with their Will.

Common grounds where it may be appropriate to remove an executor include:

• The executor refusing to take out a grant of probate.

• The executor distributing the estate against the deceased’s wishes as stated in the Will.

• Inappropriately handling the assets of the deceased’s estate e.g. making purchased using money from the deceased’s estate for personal reasons.

• Disqualification. If an executor has been convicted of a crime and sentenced to jail, they will be disqualified as an executor.

• It would be inappropriate for the individual to remain as an executor due to severe incompetence (either physically or mentally).

How can I remove an executor?

If you have concerns about the executor, there are two main methods of having the executor removed. The best practice is to write to the executor at first instance and ask for him/her to explain their actions if they have done something which you consider to be untoward. Subject to their response you will need to consider how best to proceed.

You should try to ask the executor to renounce himself/ herself as the executor of the estate. This method is significantly cheaper than proceeding with a court application, however, will only be successful if the executor is prepared to step-down as an executor. Unfortunately, this will not always be possible.

In circumstances where the executor does not agree to renounce himself/herself as the executor, you will need to make an application to the court for an Order removing the executor and the appointment of an alternative executor. The Court has a discretionary power under section 50 of the Administration of Justice Act 1985 to remove an executor and appoint a substitute executor, however, they will only do this in certain circumstances as outlined above. Who the Court appoint as the substitute executor is at the Court’s discretion, however, it will usually be an independent professional executor to limit the risk of future conflict.

You should make an application to the court as a last resort as it is often expensive and instead, where possible, try to come to an agreement with the existing executor.

If you would like to discuss a possible claim, please do not hesitate to contact Sangita Manek on sam@blasermills. co.uk or call on 01494 770980.

VIP PROTECTION

Westminster Security is a private security company headquartered in its namesake - Westminster, central London. They were established at the turn of the millennium after recognising a niche and under-catered sector within the private security industry. That was high-end security services for UHNW individuals, private households, company owners, and executives alike.

The private security sector was awash with ‘security companies’ providing basic and lowstandard security guarding services, many being rogue and unlicensed companies run by criminals and protection rackets. Thankfully, those days are long behind us now due in part to the regulation of the Industry by the Home Office and the creation of the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

These days, you will likely find more security companies trying to crack the lucrative ‘highend’ market with their service offerings, yet one name remains consistent at the pinnacle of their

trade and the chosen provider to many securityconscious individuals, families, and businesses.

Having built an excellent reputation and enviable brand image through their high standards, exceptional attention to detail, and excellence. Westminster Security has established itself as the industry leader and the ‘go-to’ company for ‘luxury’ high-end security services.

Their services are based around their core service of close protection, what is that? We hear you say. Well, essentially, its bodyguards, but not as you might envisage them. When we think of bodyguards, we all naturally think of Hulk-like burly men or gun-toting Hollywood hearth-throbs. But the reality is very different.

John Moore, Managing Director of Westminster Security Ltd said “Close protection operatives (bodyguards) come in all shapes and sizes, non are armed in the UK, and female bodyguards are ever more popular with our clients”. John is a veteran of the British Army where he served in the Royal Military Police and specialised in close protection within the Close Protection Unit. So, we believe him.

Other services they provide in support of their close protection operations include highly trained security chauffeurs, residential security guards, surveillance, and VIP event security.

Staycation city breaks to take this year

New museums, exhibitions and concert halls make for an attractive weekend break in the UK, says Sarah Marshall.

Art exhibitions, historic museums and lively music concerts are all a lure for spending time in cities. But you don’t have to hop over into Europe to enjoy a cultural, action-packed weekend. These urban centres in the UK have an excellent programme of events and openings planned for the year ahead.

BRISTOL

Celebrating its 650th birthday in 2023, this hip, offbeat city in the southwest has a programme of events planned throughout the year. During the annual Inter national Balloon Fiesta (August 10-13), 100 hot air balloons will fill the sky, while back at sea level, the Harbour Festival (July 14-16) is a maritime spectacle with family-friendly on-water activities. Later in the year, the newly-refurbished Bristol Beacon (formerly known as Colston Hall) will open as a state-of-the-art concert hall, with two international standard performance venues, a restaurant, and its cellars in use for the first time as education and performance spaces.

Stay: Hotel du Vin has rooms from £89 per night (hotelduvin.com). Go to v isitbristol.co.uk.

ABERDEEN

Not all city breaks feature a backdrop of concrete high rises. Few people realise Scotland’s mini metropolis is one of the few urban spaces with a golden sandy beach on its doorstep. Washed by the North Sea, this is also one of the best places in the UK to spot bottlenose dolphins from land. Built using shipping containers and powered by alternative energies, a new not-for-profit eco

facility, Greyhope Bay, opened last year overlooking Torry Battery.

If you are hankering after a bit of grit, check out the Nuart street art festival in June (dates still TBC), when walls are transformed into an outdoor gallery.

Stay: The Sandman Signature (sandmansignature.co.uk) has rooms from £60 per night. Go to visitabdn.com.

Mindfulness at Maltman’s

February 6th to 12th is Children’s Mental Health Week, and a great time to consider the emotional wellbeing of children. Opening up conversations about mental wellbeing as part of life helps create healthy attitudes towards mental health long into adulthood.

Maltman’s Green School is committed to equipping girls to cope with the demands of their future, not only academically, but also physically and mentally. The Pastoral care of our girls is at the heart of everything we do.

Mindfulness can be especially helpful for children to learn how to reduce stress. Our Year 5 girls are trained on Mindfulness to be able to share techniques with their peers. The girls practice mindfulness with other students on ‘Wellbeing Wednesdays’; leading relaxation sessions, regulating breathing, finding calmness and quietening their minds.  Our Year 6 girls train to be Wellbeing Warriors. Learning about empathy, gratitude, the power of compliments, pride and self esteem; helping to support children who would like to talk or need cheering up. We empower all our girls to be able to care for themselves and others.

Maltman’s Green is proud to be a “Tooled Up School” providing practical support to staff and families. Resilience is key to helping children deal with challenging situations more effectively and build skills for dealing with problems. We are committed not just to our girls but to their families and our team of dedicated staff too, the wellbeing of our community is paramount.

Teaching our girls about the natural world and how plants grow despite hard weather or seasons, can help

them to understand that they too will be able to survive any situation. We make use of our beautiful grounds and woodland daily for outdoor play. This year we open our Wellbeing Garden, a dedicated space for mindfulness, relaxation and kindness. Exercising is another great way for children to develop healthy habits. Understanding how exercise affects mental health is a wonderful life lesson.

Fostering a love for sport is an important part of life at Maltman’s Green. We have a gorgeous 25m swimming complex, gym, tennis courts and fields. Our girls get outdoors daily and our extensive range of extracurricular clubs helps to keep their minds and bodies active.

Practicing kindness and reflecting on the people in our lives who provide support and love helps us cope during difficult times. At Maltman’s we celebrate kindness with Kindness Boxes in every classroom. Thumbs-Up badges and Kindness Cups are awarded termly.

Let’s all commit to promoting kindness and mental health throughout February and every day of the year!

Celebrating 100 Years of Excellence

Thorpe House School, your local independent boys school

Thorpe House School is a hidden gem in the heart of Gerrards Cross, providing education to boys from Reception right through to GCSE age. This year sees Thorpe’s Centenary year, which is a momentous milestone.

Thorpe House School has strongly emphasised individualised learning and outstanding pastoral care throughout its history. At Thorpe House, every boy is a valued member of a nurturing community dedicated to helping them succeed academically and personally.

One of the key reasons Thorpe is such an excellent school is its small class sizes. With fewer pupils in each class, every boy receives personalised attention from their teachers, who will know their strengths

and weaknesses and be able to provide the support they need to excel.

In addition to its focus on individualised learning, Thorpe House also boasts a wide range of excellent facilities. Over the past few years, the school has made significant investments in its facilities to provide its pupils with the best possible environment for learning and growth.

At Thorpe House, we understand that each boy is an individual with his own unique needs and interests. That’s why we encourage our pupils to explore and succeed in every area of the curriculum, from academics to sport and beyond. By educating the whole boy, we can help him achieve his full potential and lead a happy, fulfilling life.

Thorpe House School is pleased to announce that Mr Jake Burnett will join us as our new Headteacher this April. Mr Burnett brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role and is committed to continuing our school’s ethos, and family feel. We are confident that Mr Burnett will be a valuable addition to our community, and we look forward to working with him to provide our pupils with the best possible education and support. As it celebrates its centenary year, it is a time to reflect on the past, celebrate the present, and look towards the future.

More Than The Academics

What to call a programme designed to stimulate curiosity, collaboration, creativity, resilience, innovation and problem solving? The surname of the first woman to receive a Nobel prize for medicine, Gerti Cori, and an inspirational female of our time, of course!

Using outcome-based teamwork projects, our innovative CORI enrichment programme, at St Mary’s School Gerrards Cross, aims to build key life skills so that our girls leave us with both the knowledge and skills to make them stand out against their peers as they go through life. In an everchanging world, this unique programme develops skills that employers will look for in years to come. At St Mary’s, our focus is on more than the academics.

In our mission to prepare our girls for future success and to exceed their potential, CORI uses experiential learning to build academic achievement and personal development skills. Our programme of 6-week modules offers opportunities for girls to become independent thinkers and problem solvers, leaders, innovators and trailblazers whilst also ensuring that they discover their passions, personal strengths and an

understanding that a positive attitude and hard work are key ingredients to achieving excellence. Projects are varied and aim to build a wide range of skills using different technologies and techniques. Vertical groupings mean that students mix with peers from across our Prep department – building relationships and leadership qualities. Projects involve designing and coding with Lego, developing and experimenting with K’nex to create fairground rides, product manufacture and marketing using sewing machines to create sellable products, risk taking at Forest School, stop motion film making, producing a news bulletin using a green screen, First Aid and Community Championsbuilding active links with our local community - are all part of our Friday afternoon activities.

And the result? Our girls are letting their St Mary’s spirit shine through! Confidence and resilience, ‘I can do this’, is becoming a mantra and failure is seen as a stepping stone to greater innovation and success. What employer of the future would not want such skills?

Don’t take our word for it, we warmly invite you to see CORI in action at our School in Action Event on Friday 10th March. Sign up on our website – we would be delighted to welcome you.

MERCHANT TAYLORS’ PREP

Merchant Taylors’ Prep School was created in 2015 as part of the alliance that was forged between Northwood Prep and Merchant Taylors’ School to provide a through school for boys aged 3 to 18. This has enabled us to continue to provide excellent education whilst developing our partnership with Merchant Taylors’ School. Our school is vibrant and dynamic and our pupils are educated by professional staff that provide a nurturing environment. We aim to instil values, such as compassion and respect, and learning dispositions, such as perseverance and independence, at the same time as ensuring the highest standards of academic achievements. We are proud that our school contains happy and confident pupils who are excited by the stimulating curriculum that we provide. Through these aims, we believe that education is about promoting intellectual curiosity in which pupils are motivated by and fully involved in their own learning. mtpn.org.uk

LOCKERS PARK SCHOOL

Lockers Park School celebrates its 150th anniversary next year and our archives are simply bulging with stories and fond memories of our long, proud history of boys’ only education. Founded in 1874, Lockers Park is one of the earliest purpose-built prep schools and has established itself as one of the top schools in the country. We send boys to a range of leading senior schools including Eton, Harrow, Winchester, Rugby and Haileybury. This is a tradition and honour we are proud to maintain.

We are an academically-focused prep school with a tailored approach to education that enables our boys to achieve superb outcomes alongside celebrating an enthusiasm for life. Being a school where classes are 16 or less, creates a thriving community where each member of staff knows each pupil and helps him to make the most of his full and active school life. This is a place where excellent results are achieved, abundant opportunities enjoyed and where pastoral care excellence, family spirit, camaraderie and kindness thrive.

For busy parents, we offer wraparound care that is second to none. Boys can arrive from 7.30am and stay until 7.30pm, receiving three high quality meals at school and enjoying the abundant range of teacher-run afterschool activities. Offering an optional Saturday School academic programme, for Years 3 to 8, gives pupils access to lessons that will stretch their interests, or allow them to build a greater understanding in areas where they may need more support.

This fully flexible offer is included within the school fees at no extra cost.

We believe that adopting a practical, hands-on approach to learning allows boys to be boys and helps increase concentration in the classroom. School days are deliberately longer than normal as this allows the pupils the time they need to recharge their batteries through well-considered breaks throughout the day. Sport for all and on a daily basis is a cornerstone of what is on offer, as is a wide range of academic subjects and cocurricular activities.

Boys study with us from Reception to Year 8 but carry the positive legacy of Lockers Park with them for life.

The Rise Of Health Testing

With our healthcare system continuing to struggle under increasing pressure, more people than ever are exploring new ways they can better manage and maintain their own health. Kate Kirrane from Seed Wellness tells us more.

Subsequently, the demand for health testing has never been higher. But with so many options to choose from, the process can be mindboggling. So, we asked our experts to help demystify the health test minefield, and share their expert knowledge on which they recommend and why.

What are the benefits of health testing?

Said Jenny McGuckian, Nutritional Therapist in Marlow, “My clients test for a variety of reasons. Most are experiencing ongoing health issues so testing is a really useful tool to help remove the guess work and get to the root cause of what’s actually going on. Other reasons people test include:

• Seeking reassurance of a health MOT

• Suspect something isn’t right and wish to delve deeper

• Have complex health needs and come with previous test results from their GP/specialist

• Want more thorough testing than what is available on the NHS

Which health tests?

Said Caroline Barton, Nutritional Therapist in Beaconsfield, “It’s important to define exactly what you are testing for and why. I recommend:

• The Dutch test – a urine test which is very accurate and useful for looking at female hormones and stress

• Baseline health marker – a blood test that highlights any nutritional, thyroid or hormone issues

• Vitamin D – simple finger prick test to assess levels

• Genetic Variability – the effective genes for your health so we can find the correct dietary approach going forward

Richa Puri, Pharmacist & Fertility Specialist, says, “My view is always ‘test – don’t guess’. Unfortunately a lot of tests are not available on the NHS. However, if you are struggling to conceive, have recurrent miscarriage or are having IVF (or failed IVF attempts in the past), testing helps give a more accurate picture of what is going on.

Can I do the tests myself?

Said Jenny, “While some tests are simple to use and can be done at home, most are more complex and you will need a practitioner or nurse to help. Also, interpreting the results can be tricky so it is better to work with a professional who knows how to read them, what they may mean and the best route forward from there to improve health outcomes.”

How much do they cost?

Costs of tests vary extensively, from £100 upwards. Your practitioner will help you choose what test is right for you within your budget.

10 DESIGNS THAT MAKE TIME STAND STILL

There are some furniture designs that seem to belong to both the past and the future, that wouldn’t look out of place in the home of your grandparent or grandchild, that give no clue to when they were designed by the way they look –are they a recent Barber and Osgerby triumph, or a classic Gio Ponti number?

Really, it’s thanks to the Modernist movement which began its climb to dominance in the early 1900s, properly getting going post World War II when contemporary designers turned their backs on the ornate classical furniture of their forbears, instead looking to tone things down and shake things up. As Le Corbusier put it; ‘A great epoch has begun. There exists a new spirit.’

Out went Art Deco, Neoclassical and Victorian styles – no more dark carved woods, gilded carpentry or rich patterns – and in came the shiny and new. Pared-back forms, a focus on function over style and visual lightness, all gloriously massproduced with gleaming new technologies, were

“Designed between 1927-31 for Louis Poulsen, when the first prototype of the PH Septima light was presented at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art, the crowd broke into spontaneous applause”

finally available and affordable(ish) to all.

Design icons rained down. Furniture took on sculptural, minimal forms as hallowed architects began producing smaller objects to fill their projects, and names such as Eames, Wegner, Castiglioni and Breuer were sanctified in the furniture hall of fame.

Jump forward to the present day, and the tubular steel is gleaming just as brightly as it did 70, 80, 90, 100 years ago, and those alluring curves look like they just fell out of the pages of a contemporary design magazine. Traversing the decades is no easy feat, yet several key 20th-century pieces of furniture have made the leap with ease, their utter minimalism protecting them from the ravages of time and blending them in so well with the present-day, it’s hard to tell what new and what’s a revered design icon.

We all know the bonafide classics – the Wishbone chairs, the Tulip tables, the Eames loungers – so let’s discover those (slightly) more under-the-radar pieces that have made it through the years thanks to their brilliantly time-proof aesthetic.

Wassily lounge chair by Marcel Breuer, 1925

Designed by Hungarian modernist architect Marcel Breuer in 1925, it’s hard to believe the gleaming shapely form of the Wassily lounge chair, now produced by Knoll, is hovering around its hundredth birthday!

PH Septima pendant light by Poul Henningsen, 1927

Designed between 1927-31 for Louis Poulsen, when the first prototype of the PH Septima light was presented at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art, the crowd broke into spontaneous applause.

S 533 by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, 1927

With sculptural curves slotting it into modernday sensibilities and the ongoing trend for all things round, the S 533 chair by leading GermanAmerican modernist architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe defies the rules of time.

Snoopy lamp by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, 1967

A 1960s child in more ways than one, the Snoopy lamp by Italian architect and designer brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni was created in 1967, taking its shape from the loveable illustrative dog from the cartoon strip Peanuts which was at its peak at the time.

La Chaise by Charles & Ray Eames, 1948

STARTING AN INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT THE RIGHT WAY

Starting an interior design project can be incredibly daunting!

If you’ve never done any significant redecorating before, it may be hard to know where to start, plus with interior design, there’s often a fine line between nailing it and failing it. Here’s how to avoid a décor disaster and make sure that you come in on budget.

Create a Mood Board

A great place to start is by collecting tear sheets from magazines or by using an online app such as Pinterest or Houzz. Whether it’s digital on your iPad or on a pin board in the study, it’s really helpful to collate ideas to help to visualize how your ideas will come together, and if you’re considering using a professional to help you, this is a great way to communicate your brief.

Consider Hiring an Interior Designer

Not all Interior Designers are frighteningly expensive. A good interior designer can help you with everything from choosing colour schemes and sourcing materials and furniture saving you hours trawling around and often source the best items for your space and budget. Having done endless

projects like yours, their expertise on space layout and lighting design can be invaluable to tap into. They will not only help you to visualise the end result but they can often help to make it happen for you handling the tradespeople and coordinating deliveries for you too.

Located on Berkhamsted’s High Street, Rebecca Clark Interiors take a uniquely personal approach to Interior Design. Offering an entirely free of charge Interior Design service, there are no fees for the design work or for tapping into the teams extensive expertise. Their priority is to use the clients’ budget on beautiful furnishings and finishes they curate for you from their portfolio of luxury suppliers, rather than spending the budget on expensive design fees.

Rebecca works closely and collaboratively with clients to create a home that feels like the best version of their taste and way of living. Updating a home is a deeply personal project and one that she always feels honoured to be a part of.

Slumber with Chatsworth

Chatsworth Collection by Woolroom, a stunning range of bedding using wool from the Chatsworth Estate, home of the Devonshire family.

Going back through the ages’ wool was once the hero fibre for the bedding and mattresses of our ancestors. Foam and synthetic mattresses and bedding only became main stream through the late 1950s to 1970, however the waste created by the modern man-made bedding is having a negative impact on the environment throughout the life-cycle of the product and beyond.

For many years selected manufacturers have been offering customers natural bedding alternatives, but the stand out is the Woolroom. They are stepping out and making it their mission to not only make natural bedding available to everyone, they are shining the light to make the ancient fibre of wool, the hero once again.

Woolroom, the UK’s leading wool bedding retailer, in partnership with the Chatsworth Estate, home to the Devonshire family, have an exclusive range of wool bedding, the ‘Chatsworth Collection by Woolroom’. This stunning bedding range exclusively uses wool sourced from the Chatsworth Estate, to offer customers a selection of wool duvets, pillows, mattress protectors and toppers.

The Chatsworth wool is part of Woolroom’s Wool ID® traceable wool programme and supports

the retailer’s aim to obtain the very best wool from the very best farms across the UK and provide full transparency of sourcing.

Traceability isn’t the only environmental benefit of the flocks that have been a firm feature of the English countryside for centuries. Sheep grow their fleece annually like the human hair, providing a sustainable fibre that is temperature regulating and helps you get a great night’s sleep, 25% deeper, more regenerative sleep to be exact.

Prices of the ‘Chatsworth Collection by Woolroom’ start from £82.99 and there’s a wide selection of weights and sizes to suit your bed and sleep style. You can also purchase extra wool for the pillows, enabling you to extend the life of an existing pillow or to add further filling to a new pillow, making the support customisable to your needs.

The collection is machine washable, naturally hypoallergenic (holder of Allergy UK Seal of Approval) and proven to deliver the very best, natural night’s clean sleep. So whether you’re a hot sleeper, conscious of your carbon footprint or want to sleep like a Duke and Duchess, the ‘Chatsworth Collection by Woolroom’ can help you get 25% deeper, more regenerative sleep.

Adding value to your home: WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

Any homeowner about to embark on building work wants to achieve the highest return on investment. But how do you measure value?

To add financial value, estate agents recommend a large kitchen/dining/ family space. Boosting kerb appeal is also important - eg an attractive porch or gable. Improving flow within the house can help, at modest outlay, as can updating flooring or a fresh lick of paint. Successful workspaces and exercise areas are popular but avoid overspending on fancy sound or lighting systems, as they will date and may not be appreciated by a future buyer.

However, the difference between investment cost and selling price only tells part of the story. If you’re going to live there for several years, 2Lockwood Architects can help you create living value as well; enriching your everyday life by designing your home for you, not just for ‘most people’, whatever that means. What’s it worth for your living space to be bathed in sunshine, offering calm sanctuary in your busy life, functioning superbly for your needs, and providing the backdrop for a lifetime of happy gatherings with friends and family? You invest in holidays to create lifelong memories; designing your home well can do the same for everyday life.

Many property developers agree that starting your home upgrade with an architect pays bigger dividends than asking a builder to add an extension or change the kitchen. One expert says, “the minute you enter a house you either love it or hate it. In that moment you don’t know why – but good architects do!”.

At 2Lockwood, Julian and Dina Lockwood are highly qualified, and each have over 26 years of experience, designing award-winning developments of multiple homes and bespoke individual projects. They understand long and short-term lifestyle trends, how residential design is evolving and they also know about innovative construction techniques to save you money without compromising on quality.

Based in Great Missenden 2Lockwood Architects are local to you and know the area. If you’d like to discuss how they can add financial and living value to your home, please visit www.2lockwood.com to book a call.

WATER FEATURES

Water features can add visual interest, help create a relaxing ambience, and provide therapeutic benefits. Even from a purely aesthetic point of view, water features are a simple yet guaranteed way to add style and individuality to any swimming pool. Water features can come in many shapes and forms; waterfalls, fountains, massage jets or spas and can be customised to fit any taste and budget. They can easily be controlled by a variety of methods and with the help of Origin’s experts, you can create an environment that provides a unique and personalised swimming experience, which is not only beautiful but functional too.

‘BEST OF BOTH WORLDS’

This is an increasingly popular trend in home swimming pool design. These pools are designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding outdoor environment, allowing you to enjoy the benefits of an indoor pool while still feeling connected to the outdoors. ‘Best of both worlds’ pools typically feature large windows or bi-folding doors that can be opened to their full extent, letting natural light and fresh air flood the pool house. This simple design allows you to bring the outside in and swim in the comfort of your own home while still enjoying the natural beauty of your surroundings.

SWIM JETS

Swim jets are a great way to maximise the functionality of an indoor swimming pool, particularly in smaller spaces. They can be installed in the pool and their powerful jets of water create a current for you to swim against, allowing for a

more intense workout and providing an innovative way to swim ‘virtual laps’ in a smaller space. The strength of the swim jets can also generate a massaging effect, adding to the relaxing sensation of being in the water, releasing endorphins and combating stress.

SCANDI STYLE

When it comes to indoor swimming pool design, muted colour palettes are taking over. The neutral or subdued shades help create a serene and peaceful atmosphere, making the pool area a relaxing and inviting space. The minimalistic, ‘scandi’ design choice is great for indoor swimming pools as it can be easily paired with contemporary or traditional style, and create a sophisticated and elegant look. Creating a cohesive design in any space can be tough, however, muted colours can be the perfect backdrop for a pool house, allowing the pool itself to be the focal point.

HOLIDAY INSPIRATION

Do you have a favourite holiday destination? If neutral shades aren’t your style, perhaps you’d prefer to incorporate some exotic and holidayinspired elements into your indoor swimming pool design. Elements such as mosaics, lush greenery and natural stone can be used to create a fun and inviting atmosphere taking inspiration from all over the globe. Design components like lighting and water features can also showcase your exotic inspiration and lend themselves to the overall feel of your swimming pool design. Looking abroad for your design influence is a great way to create a unique and personalised swimming experience for the whole family and ensure you never have the holiday blues again.

Colour Crush: Warm Taupe

New neutrals for modern living. Taupe, greige and mushroom have replaced grey as a neutral base and are skyrocketing in popularity. These warm shades are perfectly placed for any space and can be dressed up or down but stay ever-classy.

The days of optimism are pushing us towards warmer colour schemes; with off-whites and taupes as the foundation colours of the new aesthetic. Once considered as boring and uninspiring, the taupe interior trend is rapidly gaining traction and becoming a chic alternative for design enthusiasts. If you are looking to create a sophisticated space that oozes relaxation and wellness; to escape from the overwhelming hustle of the outside world, warm neutral hues are the way to go. They create a calm, resting environment, allowing us to unwind and regroup

our thoughts and feelings.

It’s all about layering to create an interesting cosy feel. Style layers of textured fabrics for a show stopping interior. Think taupe velvet, the Viola Dining chair is a great option, boucle for snuggly texture like the Marie Storage Pouffe, and pair with jute style rugs such at the Etta and organic shaped ceramics. Light the way with sculptural lighting such as the Verona marble table lamp and a dried Wildflower Bouquet to finish off the look.

Beige and off-whites go hand in hand with our desire to surround ourselves with natural materials. We are going back to basics and focusing on tactility rather than visual excitement so our homes take on a more earthy, organic feel.

Create a unique headboard with iD Upholstery

Bedrooms are our haven. A place to relax, rest and sleep.

Some people choose to decorate them in light, calming colours whilst others prefer darker more nurturing shades. Some of the most important elements comfort wise are a good quality bed and a comfortable mattress, but from a design perspective, choosing an amazing headboard is key!

The definition of a headboard in the Oxford dictionary is “the board at the end of a bed you rest your head on when you are sitting up”, however if you were to quote this to a designer they will gasp with dismay – a headboard is so much more than that! Yes of course it has its function, but from a design aspect it’s potentially the main feature of your bedroom. It brings in the opportunity to add a luxurious soft padded element to absorb sound and increase the vibe of cosy comfort compared to a cold plain wall or hardwood frame. A headboard also provides the opportunity to play with fabric designs: texture, size, shape and scale are all important factors to think about.

When you begin to design your bedroom it’s a good idea to put all the elements together to see what you’re working with: paint colours, wallpapers, wood finishes, carpet, curtain and blind fabrics etc.

Once you have seen all of these together you will be able to work out how to make your headboard centre stage! In our opinion, the most important elements to consider are the following:

Size

Firstly, you need to consider the width of your bed and whether you’re looking for a headboard to match the width, overhang or sit wall to wall.

“A headboard also provides the opportunity to play with fabric designs”

Scale

What size room do you have? A small room doesn’t necessarily require a small headboard; wall to wall headboards can work very well in a small room. If you have a large room I would recommend a larger size headboard, otherwise it won’t work with the scale and this also means you have so many options to make a real feature out of it. You can then also tie the fabric in with perhaps an end of bed chaise or chair.

Plain or pattern fabric?

This choice really depends on the shape you are going for. Fluted and deep buttoned headboards generally work better in a plain fabric, whereas patterned fabric works a dream on shaped and square headboards. Velvets are very popular as they are luxurious and have a depth of colour that works beautifully. Remember to be bold and brave – don’t be afraid to make your headboard a work of art!

Details

You can add some amazing details to headboard: contrast piping, buttons, edges and even decorative nails. Incredibly you can use all of these finishes together and create a real statement!

Easy clean

If you wear a lot of hair products or you opt for a very light fabric you may want to consider an easy clean fabric or one with a stain repellent finish. There are so many fabrics now both plain and patterned with this finish so you don’t need to cramp your creativity.

This is where we can help. We offer a headboard templating service which really helps if you are going for a very large or shaped headboard and especially if you are planning to insert bedside reading lights in it. We offer a site visit and measure where we can discuss ideas and make templates to put on your wall so you can fully adjust and agree to the exact scale and shape before you go ahead and order!

Charley Chau’s Faroe

The Best and Most Practical Fabric For a Dog to Go to Bed with This Winter

With all the warmth and depth of wool, but without the maintenance headache, the brilliant Faroe fabric was an instant hit with customers of luxury dog bedding company Charley Chau when it debuted on the brand’s Bliss Bolster Bed in 2020. Three years on, Faroe has now spun its way onto even more Charley Chau Beds, meaning there’s a snuggly bedfellow to keep every dog warm and cosy this winter.

Available across Charley Chau’s signature pocket-style Snuggle Dog Bed in Classic and Winter Warmer styles, the Bliss Bolster Bed, Day Bed Mattress and Anti-Microbial Memory Foam Dog Bed Mattress, it is now freshly launched as Bed Bumper Sets for Crates and Rattan Baskets. In its latest presentation, Faroe is now bringing all the snugly feels to turn a cold, unwelcoming dog crate into a cosy little den, and giving the enduringly timeless rattan dog basket a luxe makeover.

But why is Faroe so utterly fabulous for dogs and their dwellings, and especially in winter? Despite being soft, warm and inviting touch, Faroe is a tough canine cookie that is more than capable of withstanding the paces of daily dog use. Tough enough for heavy commercial upholstery use, with a Martindale Rub Test Score of 100,000, Faroe surpasses the entry level rub score of 30,000 for

‘commercial grade’ fabrics.

As well as being hardy, the fibres used to weave Faroe have also been treated with a permanent stainguard treatment, which means surface dirt never gets the chance to get a proper hold in the fabric. In the winter months when weather is inclement and muddy paws frequent, the stainguard feature becomes extremely beneficial, as it means the fabric can be easily spot cleaned in between washes. Additionally, Faroe’s moisturewicking and quick drying properties means moisture is wicked away from wet dog’s coat and the fabric dries out quickly, so a dog is less likely to suffer a consistently damp bed.

Handling dog hair is a breeze for Faroe too. Thanks to its tight weave, the amount of hair that works its way into the fabric itself is reduced and what remains is easily removed with a quick shake or a light hoover over.

For a clean and pristine dog bed and hygiene in the home, all of Charley Chau’s Faroe range features fully removeable covers that can go into the washing machine on a 30° to 40° cycle, dependent on the style of bed, with the fabric washing beautifully time after time.

With prices from £85 cosy up a four-legged friend’s bed with Faroe this winter at Charleychau.com and see dogs sleeping in sublime comfort @Charleychau on socials.

2023 Interior Trends with OLIVIA CROSHER

Olivia Crosher, Interior Designer at Naturewall introduces the emerging trends of 2023. This year is all about unique homes with personal touches, find your style and creative confidence!

MIXING OLD & NEW

Creating a unique home is all about mixing different styles and design periods.

Olivia’s top tip for a living room design is to mix old with new, take a vintage wooden chest as a side table, styled next to a large bouclé sofa and modern wall panelling.

Celebrate those period features in your property. Keep the original wood floors or heritage statement tiles. These are what make your home unique!

EARTHY TONES

Earthy colours are here to stay in 2023, with golden hues and ocean blues set to be popular.

Both have very calming aspects to them, with a huge focus next year being on feel-good spaces.

Olivia suggests elevating your home with colourful furniture styled alongside wood panelling to compliment the look.

TEXTURES AND CRAFTMANSHIP

There will be a huge emphasis and shift to hand-

crafted furniture, textiles, and accessories. The 2023 wall covering trend is celebrating handmade, long-lasting, hand-woven fabrics as well as painted prints and bespoke textiles.

2023 is the year to slightly move away from a completely minimalist style, introduce personal touches to elevate the tone and feel of your space. naturewall.com
