Your heart is precious, and so are your memories ‘A long-awaited positive step.’ Make your legacy unforgettable as promising findings offer hope to thousands. Who could forget the choices, events, surprises and happenstances that brought you to this very moment in time? Those pivotal cogs that set the wheel of life in motion and often only make sense in retrospect. In truth, any of us could. So, news of, “a long-awaited positive step,” in keeping those precious memories alive, funded by the generosity of British Heart Foundation (BHF) supporters, is just as remarkable as it sounds. This promising research is only in its infancy and your legacy could be that one decision that helps change the course of scientific history – for countless people around the world.
Every five minutes, someone in the UK has a stroke. That’s as long as it takes to boil a kettle, to read these two pages, or to make a decision that could change the course of history. At British Heart Foundation we’re powering vital research to find new treatments for strokes including lacunar strokes – which are linked with nearly half of all dementias and account for more than one in five strokes in the UK.
Empty spaces Lacunar strokes affect the small blood vessels – less than a millimetre wide – deep inside the brain. They were first named in the 1950s, when ‘lacunae’, or empty spaces, were spotted in the brain of those affected from them. Sometimes described as ‘small’ strokes, they can happen without the patient noticing. The more they happen, the more likely you are to develop problems with thinking or even dementia. This can be combined with mood disorders, depression or balance issues.
“For a long time, people thought all strokes were due to blood clots or blood vessels bursting,” says Professor Joanna Wardlaw. “Only recently have we realised there is a set of strokes caused by problems with small blood vessels. These milder strokes have literally gone under the radar,” she explains.
Professor Wardlaw is an expert in brain scanning and her internationally recognised research focuses on trying to prevent, diagnose and treat stroke more effectively. This includes a recent trial, funded by British Heart Foundation, which found that lacunar strokes could be treated for the first time by repurposing two existing drugs that are already being used to treat other conditions. These findings are a vital step closer towards improving the lives of the more than 25,000 individuals a year affected by this form of stroke, in the UK alone. This invaluable research provides a ray of hope to not only them, but their nearest and dearest too – as it strives to keep precious thoughts and memories alive.
Slowing the tide is just the beginning The trial, led by the Universities of Edinburgh and Nottingham, involved 363 people who had experienced a lacunar stroke. As well as their standard stroke prevention treatment, for one year participants took either isosorbide mononitrate or cilostazol individually, both drugs together, or neither. A year after the trial, participants that took both drugs were nearly 20% less likely to have problems with their thinking and memory compared to the group that did not take either drug. If these findings aren’t powerful enough, it was also found that these participants were also more independent and reported a better quality of life. Researchers hope that if the results are confirmed in further trials, the two drugs could be available as a treatment for lacunar strokes within five years.
Let your legacy change the course of history for the better Gifts in Wills from our donors fund over half of the research supported by BHF, research that has helped lower UK death rates from heart and circulatory diseases by 75% since the charity’s inception in the 1960s. Your contribution can be a part of something huge, leaving a legacy that will be an essential cog in the wheel of fighting conditions like lacunar strokes and vascular dementia. Together, we can fuel visionary research that will bring hope to future generations and keep memories alive.* Once your loved ones are taken care of, you could leave a gift too. It’s a quiet act that makes the biggest difference. * The research referenced was also supported by the UK Dementia Research Institute.
If you’d like to leave a gift that could save lives, go to bhf.org.uk/mylegacy
These findings may help far beyond treatment, as Professor Wardlaw says there’s a chance that further research could indicate the drugs’ usefulness in prevention too.
“If it works in people who have had symptoms, it seems plausible it could work in people who haven’t had symptoms but are at high risk, perhaps due to family history,” says Professor Wardlaw. “It might be that you could use it as a treatment for people who haven’t had a stroke yet.” This major step forward is only the beginning and with your help – the best is yet to come.

January recipe & kitchen news
O
ne of the most frequently asked questions in the restaurant is, when do we change our menu? The answer is simple. We change our menu according to the produce available at that time in that season. and as we are in midwinter root vegetables and brassicas are at their best and with a little imagination, these simple ingredients can be transformed into something amazing and delicious. For this month’s recipe I have focused on one of our name sakes - the Jerusalem artichoke an ingredient little used but packed full of flavour and very versatile. These little winter tubers are great for a variation whether they be scrubbed and roasted in the oven or simply blended as a soup. They have a wonderful nutty flavour and
when blended, a rich creamy consistency. So since I am sure we have all been guilty of over indulging during the festive period I have chosen my Jerusalem artichoke soup recipe for this month, making a perfect lunch or light supper and for me has to be served piping hot with a good side of buttered crusty bread, of course feel free to dunk when no one is looking! To add a little theatre to you presentation, if serving to friends or loved ones why not sauté some seasonal mushrooms and place in the centre of your serving bowls then pour the hot soup around table side finishing with a generous sprinkle of lightly chopped toasted hazelnuts and even a few shavings of black winter truffle or pan fried scallops if the extravagant mood takes you!
RECIPE: JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE SOUP Ingredients - Serves 4 Soup • 1kg Jerusalem artichokes - washed • 1 clove of garlic chopped • 3 sticks of celery – medium chopped • 1 onion – peeled and medium chopped • 1 medium floury potato • 2 litres chicken or vegetable stock – warmed • 300 ml warmed double cream • 50 g salted butter • Salt and freshly ground pepper
Midwinter News at the Artichoke The rejuvenated Artichoke Team has returned with a wealth of fresh inspiration just as we move into midwinter with hopefully some chilly but crisp and sunny days, we have been making plans for an exhilarating upcoming year. As January unfolds, there is a bounty winter ingredient to be explored, highlights of the season include the earthy richness of celeriac, comforting roast chestnuts, the crisp allure of turnip pickled apple, swede and the fragrant sweetness of mead matched with cranberries. Tasting Menu Offer Bid farewell to the winter chill and indulge in our Tasting or Five Course Lunch Tasting Menu. As a token of our appreciation, relish a complimentary glass of our seasonal house made cocktail, a Spiced Pear Bellini with a touch of Poire William, upon arrival. It is our way to welcome you back and to add a warm and a delectable touch to your dining experience. This exclusive offer is available from Wednesday Dinner to Friday Lunch until Friday 9th February 2024 optional wine pairing £75/50 per person
To Garnish • Artichoke crisps • 25g toasted hazelnuts
** please mention ‘Tasting Offer’ when making your reservation** (‘offer’ available for up to four guests)
Method Soup 1. Scrub the artichokes and then chop into small pieces. 2. Sweat in a hot pan with a little butter and oil with the chopped onion garlic and celery. 3. Add stock and chopped potato, cook until just soft. 4. Liquidise in a blender with the warmed cream. Season to taste. 5. Pass through a sieve and then your soup is ready to serve – pour into warmed bowls. 6. Garnish with toasted hazelnuts and some very finely sliced and deep-fried artichoke crisps. Chefs Tips When selecting your artichokes try and go for the less gnarled ones as they will contain fewer pockets for dirt and grit to collect.

Finding the Balance in Boarding As a traditional prep school with a strong boarding heritage, making the decision to remove compulsory boarding at Years 7 and 8 was a big one.
O
ne of the advantages of being a small school, is that we can easily seek feedback from our stakeholders. What we were hearing from prospective parents who chose not to send their sons to Caldicott was that they weren’t ready to commit their son to weekly boarding a few years down the line. What we were hearing from some current parents was that their sons weren’t settling into boarding as quickly as they’d hoped. We’re happy to say that since the announcement, the majority of feedback we’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive. We are undeniably advocates of boarding; we regularly hear how impressively quickly Caldicott boys settle into life at Harrow, Eton and the wide range of other senior schools that our boys progress to. Obviously, this is thanks to the work
“We’ll still be encouraging parents to choose boarding for their sons, but it will be their decision to make as a family (made easier by the option of flexi boarding from Year 3”
of many teachers over several years at Caldicott, but one key part is the precisely designed path that starts in Years 3 and 4 and finishes in Year 8, when boys leave with two years of boarding under their belts. For this reason, we’ll still be encouraging parents to choose boarding for their sons, but it will be their decision to make as a family (made easier by the option of flexi boarding from Year 3). ‘Day Plus’ is the name of our new offering for Years 7 and 8. It includes two nights of optional boarding a week, which can be easily added to; despite these nights not being compulsory, they allow boys to still take part in our very popular evening activities programme. Our Day Plus offering is best described as striking a balance between ensuring boys are enriched and prepared in all the ways that we’re known for, yet it also allows flexibility for the individualised needs of each child. Our relationship with top boarding senior schools is well documented, but our strong relationship with many 13+ day schools is less widely known. Our Deputy Head (Academic), Ma’am Naidoo, regularly attends meetings and events at lots of day schools such as Merchant Taylors, St Paul’s, Westminster, and is thoroughly familiar with the application process to these schools. To dig a little deeper, come to one of our open mornings. Book now at: www.caldicott.com/welcome-to-caldicott.

appiness is central to the aims of Dair House School. We believe that when a child is happy and looks forward to coming to school every day, they will learn far more successfully. We pride ourselves in offering each pupil a unique education that gives pupils a wide variety of opportunities inside and outside the classroom, producing confident, independent pupils well prepared for the next steps in their journey. Both staff and pupils live by our core values, the three C’s: Courageous: encouraging pupils to be resilient; learn from their mistakes; and challenge themselves beyond their comfort zones. Committed: promoting persistence and dedication in the classroom, on the sports field and through the Arts. Dedicated to both academic and personal progress we believe there is no ceiling on any child’s potential.

EMPOWERMENT FOR EXCELLENCE
A Blueprint for Success at Gateway School In the dynamic landscape of Gateway School, our commitment to excellence is underscored by our unwavering focus on empowerment across three pivotal areas.
T
hese school priorities form the blueprint for an even more vibrant and successful learning environment, ensuring that every child thrives and excels in their educational journey. “Creativity in the Curriculum.” At Gateway School, we believe in nurturing the spark of creativity in every child. We create a dynamic and innovative learning environment that encourages curiosity, exploration, and critical thinking. We enrich the educational experience for every child by providing them with opportunities to take ownership of their learning. Through challenge days, real-life impact projects, digital skill development and inspiring guest speakers, we empower our pupils to think creatively, embrace mistakes as part of the learning process and become lifelong learners. “Developing Individuals.” We recognise that each child is unique, and our goal is to promote their holistic growth. We want our children to thrive not only academically, but also socially and emotionally. We believe that character growth and resilience are equally important as academic success. We do not only focus on our children, but also on our staff. We empower our educators to continuously develop themselves, ensuring that they can provide the best support and guidance for the children. Together, we foster an environment where every child reaches

their full potential and enjoys the journey of learning. “Purposeful Collaboration.” We understand that the school community extends beyond the classroom. It includes our dedicated staff, our wonderful children, and our parents. We cultivate a culture of collaboration to create a unified, vibrant and thriving school community. Together, we have the common goal of providing the best possible educational experience for our children. Our School Priorities are not just words in a document, but a commitment to our children’s future. We are proud to share that our recent ISI Inspection has affirmed our commitment, rating us as “Excellent” in all areas. This achievement reflects the consistent efforts we put into empowering our children and staff, nurturing their growth and strengthening our school community and the bonds that make Gateway School an exceptional place of learning and development. Empowering future-ready leaders Nestled in the heart of Berkshire, Queen Anne’s School offers academic excellence and outstanding pastoral care for girls aged 11-18. Proudly educating girls since 1894, the school has seamlessly blended tradition with innovative education, creating a supportive environment where girls flourish and are ready for the modern world.
P
arents of Queen Anne’s School students recognise the value of an environment where their daughters can thrive, free from gender biases, fostering a culture that champions girls’ achievements. The benefits of girls-only education are prominently showcased through outstanding ‘value added’ results at Queen Anne’s, with students achieving above their predicted grades in GCSE and A Levels. Making use of small class sizes and collaborative learning environments, the girls excel in their studies and are free to choose subjects free of gender bias. In addition to excellence in academics, there is emphasis on embracing leadership opportunities, high-level success in sports, student-led initiatives, a dedicated careers programme and an engaged alumnae network. Queen Anne’s leavers go on to achieve university places at Russell Group and Ivy League institutions, sports scholarships, and coveted degree apprenticeships. The broad and balanced curriculum at Queen Anne’s is complemented by an extensive range of co-curricular opportunities, housed in state-of-the-art facilities, including modern music recital halls, a fully equipped sports centre, a 250-seat theatre, and homely boarding houses. The emphasis on fostering holistic development is a hallmark of girls-only education, as they

throw themselves into clubs such as lacrosse, STEM club, beekeeping, football and more. Collaboration is also important, and girls have termly events with other local schools such as Reading School, Moulsford Prep School and Eton College including socials, academic societies and symposiums. For day students an extensive transport network is available plus the added bonus of flexibility in boarding options. Many girls choose to flexi-board for a few nights a week to foster independence and to form lasting friendships with their peers. In the pursuit of academic excellence and well-rounded learners, families are finding that girls-only boarding schools offer a unique and enriching educational journey for their daughters. By focusing on girls-only education, Queen Anne’s is not only shaping empowered and future-ready leaders but also creating a community where young women can truly embrace their individuality and potential without the constraints of gender stereotypes. If you are interested in learning more about girls-only education, Queen Anne’s are holding an Open Morning on Friday 1 March. To find out more visit www.qas.org.uk

Pupils at RMS are challenged daily and the learning style inspires pupils to dig deeper, often resulting in futures they had not imagined. As experts in girls’ education, RMS understand how girls prefer to learn. The school ably guides, supports and nurtures and provides the opportunity to expand horizons. Dispelling the myths around nuptial agreements For anyone getting married this year and thinking about nuptial agreements, B P Collins’ family team dispels their myths and why they can be extremely useful.
D
espite nuptial agreements growing in popularity after a landmark case in the Supreme Court in 2010, which resulted in prenuptials being given increased weight by the English courts, there is still a commonly held belief that nuptial agreements are one-sided, unromantic and only for the wealthy. However, they can be a practical, just, and transparent way to discuss your financial situation on marriage and agree what should happen if it comes to an end.
48 JANUARY 2024
Myth 1: They are not recognised in this country In 2010, the Supreme Court decided that if a prenup is freely entered into and both parties understand the implications of what they are signing, then the agreement will be upheld, subject to it being fair at the time of the divorce. However, although prenups are not currently automatically binding, experienced family lawyers will keep in mind both case law and draft legislation involving prenups, to best ensure yours will be upheld. Prenups remain the best form of wealth protection on
divorce, and are particularly helpful to keep intact hereditary wealth (such as farms and estates) and company assets. Myth 2: They are only for the rich and famous Prenups are increasingly common, and not just amongst the super-rich, because they offer protection and certainty. However, it is worth bearing in mind that when deciding if it is fair to uphold a prenup, one of the key factors is whether it meets both of your needs. If the effect of the prenup would be to leave one of you unable to meet your reasonable needs for housing and income, then it might only be partially upheld (if at all). Myth 3: They can’t be changed Prenups can always be changed, as long as you both approve. In fact, a well drafted prenup will include a review clause, encouraging you and your spouse to make appropriate changes to the agreement when significant changes occur, such as the birth of a child or if one of you is out of work for several years, to ensure the agreement remains fair. Myth 4: They show a lack of trust between couples Entering into a prenup is more likely to show that the opposite is true. Having an open discussion, at a time when you love and respect each other most, about your expectations on divorce such as what will be ring fenced and what will be shared; how the financially stronger party is going to help meet the needs of the other; or how the spouse that is most likely to make career sacrifices for the family will be compensated, can build a very strong and healthy relationship. A prenup is really no different to putting in place a will or an insurance policy.
Myth 5: They can only be signed before a marriage A pre-nup is a nuptial agreement signed before the wedding. To ensure there is no inference of duress, a pre-nup should be signed at least one month beforehand. If it is signed less than one month before, or you’re already married and want to have a nuptial agreement, you and your spouse can sign one any time after the wedding and it will have just as much weight. This is known as a post-nuptial agreement. For further advice and information on nuptial agreements, please contact B P Collins’ family team at enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk or call 01753 889995.

Divorce and Separation Helping you find the right outcome
I
t is difficult to know where to turn when faced with divorce. Dealing with the emotional aspects of the process and having to consider financial matters as well as arrangements for children, can be overwhelming. In these circumstances, it is essential to seek legal advice at the earliest opportunity. It is important to find a specialist family lawyer, with whom you feel comfortable and can strike up a good rapport. A number of legal issues can arise in a divorce. It may be that the family home has to be sold, and separate properties purchased. Or it may be necessary to update your will, in order to ensure that upon death, your estate is divided up in accordance with your wishes. It could be that there is a dispute in relation to the family business, and specialist advice is needed in relation to the operation of the company. There may also be immigration and employment issues
to consider, following the breakdown of the relationship. It is therefore sensible to seek advice and assistance from a full- service law firm. At Machins Solicitors, all our expert teams are on hand to assist with the various issues that can arise upon divorce. This ensures consistency throughout the process, having your legal advisors under one roof and regularly consulting with each other about your case. You can feel safe in the knowledge that you will not be unsettled by having to be referred elsewhere to deal with the sale or purchase of a property, the making of a will or for company and commercial advice, as your case progresses. Our private family team is consistently recognised in the Legal 500 and Chambers directories for the quality of the work we deliver and the service we provide to all our clients. The range of experience across the team ensures that our lawyers are expertly placed to advise on the full range of legal solutions when it comes to relationship and family breakdown. Benefits of instructing a local conveyancer to handle your move We often find ourselves turning to the internet for various aspects of our daily lives, including tasks like banking, shopping, and ordering takeaways. However, this might not be the best choice when it comes to property transactions which are a significant financial commitment for most individuals. Many people assume that the conveyancing process is straightforward, this is far from the truth and difficulties can often arise as matters progress. Challenges often surface as matters progress, and it is essential to have a skilled professional who can handle these situations, ensuring a smoother and less stressful experience for you. Lisa Harris, Partner in the Residential Property team at Blaser Mills Law, outlines the key benefits of instructing a local solicitor as opposed to an online e-conveyancer. 1.Local knowledge and expertise: A local solicitor will have personal knowledge of the area and will be aware of developments with specific issues. 2.Face to face communication: You can book in a faceto-face meeting with your local solicitor at any point during the transaction. 3.Witnessing documents: Many documents will need to be witnessed by someone independent and not related to you. These can be signed and witnessed at the office of a local law firm. 4.Time sensitive matters: On some occasions, matters can become time sensitive which means you can visit your solicitor directly and hand over the hard copy of the documents rather than worry about postal arrangements.
5.No hidden costs: Many local law firms pride themselves on transparency when it comes to costs. E-conveyancing firms are often known to add on hidden costs throughout the process. 6.Reputation: Local law firms are usually recommended based on their reputation and expertise. The recommendations can come from the likes of estate agents, financial advisors or even friends and family.
7.Local connections: A local law firm will have relationships with other professionals that can assist you with your property transaction, such as mortgage brokers and surveyors. 8.A personal touch: E-conveyancing firms often handle a large volume of cases and lack personal contact with the client, often leaving you to deal with multiple agents. Using a local law firm, like Blaser Mills Law, means you will have a designated lawyer representing you and taking care of your requirements. 9.Property transactions and beyond: Your local law firm will be able to service all your legal needs, becoming your go to legal partner throughout various stages of your life. Why choose Balser Mills Law Blaser Mills Law is regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority meaning we are accountable. We have also been awarded the Conveyancing Quality Scheme accreditation by the Law Society which is a recognised quality standard regulated law firms dealing with residential conveyancing and is a symbol of certain standards of competence and client service levels being met.

P
rioritising and improving our health are at the forefront of public consciousness in the post-pandemic world and with an increased awareness of the fragility of our health, individuals are now more than ever committed to finding a balance between their personal health, family duties and professional commitments. Doctor Now’s bespoke health screening services deliver customised insights that cater to the unique demands of our bodies and lifestyles, ensuring that health maintenance is not just a routine task, but a personalised journey towards well-being.
68 JANUARY 2024
“Doctor Now’s bespoke health screening services deliver customised insights that cater to the unique demands of our bodies and lifestyles”
Personalisation & early detection By incorporating advanced, customised screening modules, Doctor Now considers an individual’s health profile, providing a detailed analysis that is unique and personalised. This allows the screening doctor to consider current medical conditions and identify potential future health risks along with family health history risk factors, as well as consider lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, stress levels, alcohol consumption and sleep patterns. By tailoring screening processes to an individual’s unique characteristics, The Doctor Now team can
offer more targeted advice and interventions at an early stage. This personalised approach enhances the accuracy of diagnoses and promotes proactive health management, leading to better outcomes for patients. Early detection of health risks Early detection is vital in preventing the progression of diseases, and tailored screening empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their health. Catching conditions in their infancy enables more effective and less invasive treatment options at a later stage, ultimately improving the chances of successful outcomes. Cost-effective & peace of mind Whilst health screening will involve an initial investment, it proves to be cost-effective in the long run. By identifying health risks early on, individuals can avoid more extensive and expensive treatments that may be required if conditions are left undetected. Personalised health screenings guide individuals in making lifestyle choices that can prevent the onset of diseases. ometimes it takes a super chilly cold snap to spark snuggle season – and remind you how winter woollies are a wardrobe essential. And with so many brights on our radar, not to mention the ease of a pull-on with a pop of colour for an instant style update, or a flourish of fingerless gloves to show off your nail art, it’s time to dial up your daywear of fleecy extras…
SUPERSIZED SCARVES The blanket scarf is the runaway hit, which will make you look every inch a fashionista. Essentially, the bigger, the brighter, the better! Cited by Vogue as the biggest accessory trend across the autumn/ winter 2023 collections, this is not a comforter to keep under wraps – wear it long and loose, then drape it over the back of your neck when the temperature plummets. 27860 J JA AN NU UA ARRYY 2 20 20 42 4

2023: The Year of the
ECLECTIC INTERIOR J
ust where has the time gone... One moment we’re still basking in the glow of Salone del Mobile and now, the year is over and it still feels like we’re still waiting for The Big 2023 Interiors Movement to emerge – this isn’t how it’s supposed to be! Or is it? Sure, there have been some growing themes throughout the year, but unlike before they exist either happily merging into each other, the dividing lines broken down, or completely contradicting each other. And that’s what 2023 has all been about, the throwing away of the rule book, and the uninhibited celebrating of good design, whatever it may be, and whatever it may sit next to in the home. Eclecticism, doing whatever we like in our interiors, was the decorating motto of 2023. We’ve seen the rise of ‘The home as the sanctuary’ in recent years – this year it’s more like ‘My home is just for me’. Like that chair? Take it. Like that table? Take it. They don’t go together? That’s ok, it’s all about how they make us feel – if they summon that warm, fuzzy feeling in your chest, they belong in your dining room. It’s historic. It’s hyper-contemporary. It’s highgloss smooth. It’s heavy texture. It’s colourful. It’s maximalist. It’s iconic Scandi. It’s luxe. It’s laid back. Put all of the interior pieces you love into a big pot, mix them all together, and that’s 2023. Spaces became dynamic, personalised and free.
Interiors became about self-expression, each area a visual representation of who you are, design objects becoming strokes on an artist’s canvas. Beautiful objects stood in the home to be admired standalone or as part of the fuller exhibition. Colours danced, textures soared and materials intermingled. Styles, influences and ages fused. It’s wild, it’s calm, and yet it really makes sense. 2023 was the year of the Me Interior, the Do Whatever You Like Interior, the Embrace It All Interior. But there were a few signals along the way as to where we’re headed. Surfaces spanned got tactile, from the highlytextured to the mega smooth, with colours similarly extreme and high-definition, pigmentrich tones taking over. Scandi design took an unexpected twist, sofas went exploring and metallics got involved with it all. It was quite the year. In the closing moments of 2023, the echoes of such eclectic design resonate, leaving a lasting impression for the new interiors era, one where diversity and the celebration of unique aesthetics define the way we curate our spaces. Let us present the key materials and finishes from the mix that will guide us into the coming year...
COLOURFUL EXPLOSION: Dig out your kaleidoscopes and pop on your sunglasses because the pigment party isn’t over. 8862 J JAANN UU AR 2 0 2240 2 4 AYR Y
“It’s historic. It’s hypercontemporary. It’s high-gloss smooth. It’s heavy texture. It’s colourful. It’s maximalist. It’s iconic Scandi”
Powerful, impactful colours have reigned this year and there’s no sign of a slowdown. Lead by the primary tones of vivid scarlet, rich ultramarine and radiant yellow with support from fiery orange, intense magenta and in-the-jungle green, the modern furniture designs of 2023 were soaked in saturation.
THE NEW NORDIC:
SUPER TEXTURES:
If you’re an aficionado of Scandi style, you always knew what you were going to get when adding to your collection – the highest quality materials, illustrious design names and classic, pass-down-the-generations-worthy design. OK – nothing’s changed in that regard, but this year Nordic furniture had a different feel, many pieces completely shaking off the past and creating brand new, original and innovative designs rather than the quiet subtleties we may be used to.
ADVENTUROUS SOFAS:
From exaggerated upholstery to extravagant finishes, this year we honed in on touch. Ridged markings were carved into solid materials and tailored into the soft to highlight their threedimensionality form a layer of shadows. Glass took a U-turn and went from the definition of smooth to hazy, distorted and uneven, taking on the look of frozen water and casting shadows that transform a room into something ethereal. Materials got loose, relaxing their yarns to become more tactile, plush or soft for a cosy cocooning feel as well as creating experimental juxtapositions alongside other textures.
The modern sofa has moved into the realms of indescribability – it’s something curved, something angled, something long, something compact, something with gaps in, something a bit hard... Furniture-wise, the sofa is the centre of the home. It’s the comfiest place to be, where everyone wants to sit, its where we unwind, its where we relax, it’s where we catch up, it’s where life happens. Our seating needs are growing – to engage with each other, to fit around corners beauty, to fit the extended family, to double as a work space, to create sculptural – and sofas have heard us.
Disco-ball-worthy spaces entered the contemporary design sphere this year with metallic accents edging indoors. It was a year that glittered, glistened and shone as playful and exuberant metallics graced platforms of all kinds: from the most up-to-date of living rooms to the catwalks of Dior, Chanel and Tory Burch, as well as stages stormed by Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles. From golden glints to silvery sheens, metallic accents in the home are enthralling and magical.
DAZZLING METALLICS:

Top things to consider when designing a bathroom space fittings are the perfect choice. By hiding the pipes within the wall cavity, the fittings sit flush to the wall, reducing the possibility of bumping into them when showering and creating a sleek finished look. You can create additional in-shower storage by utilising the void in a stud or false wall to build alcoves for storing shower products, in turn maximising space on the floor. These alcoves can easily become a real design feature, by adding lighting and/or contrasting tiles to inject personality into the space.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT GLASS Shower glass comes in many shapes and sizes but there’s always an option to suit your space. Firstly, think about whether you want a shower enclosure or a more open space with a shower screen. If you’re opting for an enclosure, consider which shape will work best, such as pentagonal to utilise the corner of a room or three-sided if you have a bit more space available. If you go for shower glass, think about which style you like, whether that be Crittall-style, fluted or the emerging trend, etched.
W

GO ECO Sustainability within bathrooms has never been more important than it is right now and with the cost of living also rising exponentially, it’s important to consider the ways in which you can minimise excess energy and water consumption within the bathroom. One way to reduce water usage is to choose a shower head fitted with a flow restrictor. Luckily, this option doesn’t mean you end up with a substandard shower as each flow restrictor shower has been carefully designed to reduce water consumption but still offer a pleasurable showering experience. Alternatively, you can opt for a technology-led shower which enriches shower water with air droplets, making for an invigorating shower experience.

Pantone Colour of the Year 2024:
PEACH FUZZ

Create a mindful space with peach
A
velvety gentle peach tone, Peach Fuzz calls for connection and compassion as we look to the year ahead. Rebecca Snowden, Interior Style Advisor at Furniture And Choice shares 3 ways to style this cosy and playful colour at home.
Evoke the summer sunshine with peach Described as a ‘perfect balance between pink and orange’, embrace peach’s warm and cosy qualities by choosing it as the primary colour in the bedroom. “Use peach to evoke the fresh summer sunshine on a sunny day,” Rebecca says. Choose a lighter peach tone alongside Peach Fuzz for two tone walls and balance with relaxing neutrals. Ground the room with a comfy grey fabric bed and white linen as well as wooden textures such as a rattan bedside table. Layer with pops of sky blue and peach accessories to complete the soft, feminine look.
Contrast peach with bold, vibrant green “With peach’s gentle and nurturing elements fostering a close connection with nature, create a chic contrast with a bold and vibrant green in an open plan kitchen diner,” Rebecca says. “Pantone recommends pairing peach with blue-green hues like 16-5123 Baltic or 14-5416 Bermuda for a harmonious and peaceful feel.” Bring out peach’s soft and relaxing qualities by complementing it with a wooden dining table and oak flooring. ‘’Bring peach’s cosy sensibilities to the forefront with two tone peach walls in the living room,” Rebecca says. “Anchor the room with a grey faux leather sofa and layer with colourful cushions.” Tie the look together with mindful accents throughout the room to create a soothing ambience. Set the scene with natural textures that inspire the senses like a jute rug, rattan accessories and indoor greenery. Add personal touches such as artwork or personal photographs to inspire cheerfulness and prioritise wellbeing. furniturechoice.co.uk
