What can you do if your spouse or civil partner dies without leaving enough for you to live on?

It is a difficult and emotional time when a spouse dies. This can be made harder if you then find out that you have not been left enough, or anything, in a Will, or you do not inherit enough via intestacy, i.e. when someone dies without a Will.

In situations such as this, there is a potential help by way of the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) 1975 Act (“the Inheritance Act”).

The Inheritance Act

In England and Wales, a person is entitled to leave their assets (or estate) to whoever they want. This is referred to a testamentary freedom; however, this freedom is not absolute. The Inheritance Act allows certain categories of applicants to bring a claim against an estate of a deceased person, who died domiciled in England and Wales, where they have not been provided with ‘reasonable financial provision’ either under the terms of the will or via the rules of intestacy.

Who can make a claim?

People who are covered by the Inheritance Act can include:

• A spouse or civil partner.

• Children (both minors or adults). This includes adopted children and those who have been treated as a child of the marriage e.g. step-children.

• A former spouse or civil partner – if they have not remarried.

• Someone who has lived continuously with the deceased for at least two years prior to their death.

• Any person who was financially maintained in some way by the deceased.

Claimants under the Inheritance Act

If you are able to show that you are an eligible applicant, the court will consider what amounts to ‘reasonable financial provision’. This depends on whether you were married or not. Spouse of civil partner: These applicants are entitled to receive such financial provision as is reasonable in all the

circumstances, whether it is required for their maintenance or not. This generally means that a spouse or civil partner would be entitled to a higher standard of maintenance than the other categories of applicants. Anyone other eligible claimant: These applicants are entitled to such reasonable financial provision as is necessary for their maintenance. This is subject to the size of the estate.

This article will consider spousal claims under the Inheritance Act.

Spouses: What can you expect to receive from an Inheritance Act claim?

The court has wide discretion to consider a number of factors when deciding whether reasonable financial provision has been made and, if it has not, what further financial provision should be provided.

The factors the Court will consider are in section 3 of the Inheritance Act and include the following:

(a) Your financial needs and resources both now and in the foreseeable future – this includes your income, means and resources and will involve a consideration of the lifestyle you had with your spouse;

(b) The financial needs and resources of any other person making a claim against the estate, both now and in the foreseeable future – if there are no other claims then this factor is not considered;

(c) The financial needs and resources of any beneficiary of the estate, both now and in the foreseeable future – these are the beneficiaries in the Will or via the intestacy rules;

(d) Any obligations and responsibilities that the deceased had towards any applicant or any beneficiary of the estate;

(e) The size and nature of the estate – the Court cannot order any more than the estate is worth and, normally, any debts or liabilities have to be paid first;

(f) Any physical or mental disability of any applicant or beneficiary; and

(g) Any other conduct.

There are also additional factors that are taken into account for married couples / those in a civil partnership:

• The applicant’s age and the duration of the marriage;

• The applicant’s contribution to the welfare of the family of the deceased person and the management of any businesses; and

• The provision an applicant might reasonably be expected to receive had the marriage been terminated by divorce rather than death. The Court normally considers that a marriage is an equal partnership and on divorce the starting point is 50/50. While this is often adopted in Inheritance Act claims, certain factors can lead to a change in that starting point as the Courts recognise that a divorce is a decision made by the parties to bring a relationship to an end, whereas the passing away of one party to the relationship is an involuntary ending of the relationship.

The aims we look to achieve are:

• Your accommodation security;

• Whether you will be able to meet future costs e.g. costs of care;

• Whether you can meet your everyday costs of living until retirement; and

• Whether you can maintain the lifestyle that you had during the marriage.

If your claim is successful, the Court can make a range of awards including a lump sum, periodic payments, the transfer of property or the right to reside in a property for the rest of the applicant’s life.

Time limit to bring a claim

Court proceedings should be issued within six months of the date of the Grant of Probate (or the Grant of Letters of Administration). As such, it is important to act quickly to obtain legal advice if you think you may have a claim.

If the deadline has passed, it may still be possible to bring a claim, but you will have to apply for the Court’s permission to bring a claim out of time.

“The original idea behind this show was based on the extreme journeys that I wanted to take in order to find an antidote to living a frazzled life. Along the way I wanted to find meaning, peace, happiness – the stuff we’re all chasing. However, after some transcendent experiences, I ended up in a mental institution. Obviously, I didn’t find what I was looking for.” ‘I’m Not As Well As I Thought I Was’ is Ruby’s first tour show in four years following her critically acclaimed, sell-out tour, ‘How To Be Human’.

MILTON JONES: HA!MILTON

This is not a musical. Milton Jones is tone deaf and has no sense of rhythm, but at least he doesn’t make a song and dance about it. He has more important things to discuss. Like giraffes…and there’s a bit about tomatoes. You might know him from Mock the Week, Live at the Apollo or Radio 4. Or that time he stood for the Scottish National Party, fought a hard campaign, but in the end had to respect the wishes of the people of Cardiff. A whole new show of daftness. You know it makes sense.

PADDINGTON BEAR TAKES A SEAT AT WESTFIELD LONDON & CONNAUGHT VILLAGE

Fans of all ages can take a pew next to Paddington as STUDIOCANAL unveils a series of cute statues of the marmalade loving bear. Launched as part of Paddington Visits – Westfield London and Connaught Village are just two of 23 locations across the UK and Ireland.

The statues are being unveiled in cities, towns, and beauty spots to celebrate the forthcoming release of PADDINGTON IN PERU, arriving in cinemas on 8th November.

This new adventure will see Paddington return home to the Peruvian jungle to visit his beloved Aunt Lucy, now a resident at the Home for Retired Bears. With The Brown Family and Mrs Bird in tow, a thrilling adventure ensues when a mysterious disappearance plunges them into an unexpected journey from the Amazon rainforest to the

mountain peaks of Peru.

With passers by stopping for selfies, everyone was buzzing with excitement as they gathered to welcome their new neighbour - a meticulously crafted and painted statue sporting the wise bear’s signature red hat, blue duffle coat, and a marmalade sandwich in paw.

Film creators STUDIOCANAL came up with the idea to spread the Paddington love, so has teamed up with the Ordnance Survey to help intrepid explorers discover Paddington near them. Families can embark on their own adventure, with locations ranging from John O’Groats to Land’s End, Westport Co. Mayo to London, and, of course, a very special stop in Newbury, the hometown of Paddington’s creator, Michael Bond.

Speaking on the launch of Paddington Visits, a spokesperson from STUDIOCANAL commented: “We are delighted to launch Paddington Visits, a trail which will see everyone’s favourite bear bringing fun, kindness and warmth to communities across the UK. We hope that everyone seeks out their local Paddington, whether that’s dropping by for a chat about your day or to enjoy a marmalade sandwich or two while enjoying the view! Paddington is ready to welcome everyone!”

For 65 years, British-born writer Michael Bond has delighted readers all over the world with his stories about Paddington, the bear from Peru. The kindness and humour in the stories appeal to children and adults alike, ensuring Paddington’s enduring popularity from one generation to the next.

R.M.Williams chooses Marlow for its latest store opening

R.M.Williams, the heritage Australian footwear and apparel brand, has arrived on Marlow High Street with a brand new standalone store. It is the first store to open outside of Australia since 2017, and will be the first store in the UK to feature the full womenswear assortment alongside its menswear range.

It’s an exciting moment for the brand as it continues its expansion in the UK, and this latest opening is a firm nod to its future without forgetting its past. The Marlow store debuts a new store design layout, complete with traditional tools and fixtures in homage to the brand’s origins.

In keeping with its dedication to quality craftsmanship, R.M.Williams has drawn on the expertise of local British craftspeople to furnish the store, with pieces from Stroud-based handmade furniture and cabinet supplier, Timberwoolf; Hampshire furniture maker, Morgan; Sheffield joinery supplier, Eclipse Manufacturing; and Rush Matters, the Bedforshire-based creator of the Marlow store’s window plinths and in-store risers, all woven from British rush, harvested by hand by Rush Matters founder, Felicity Irons.

To mark the occasion, their most iconic menswear style has received the Marlow treatment, with an exclusive iteration of their Craftsman boot available in-store.

The ‘Marlow Edition’ Craftsman boot is a celebration of the Buckinghamshire town. Staying true to the style that has become R.M.Williams’

signature, it is crafted with their distinctive onepiece of leather design in a luscious shade of navy blue. This innovative method of bootmaking has been part of the brand’s story since its inception and helps to ensure the long life of your boots by reducing the number of areas where something can go wrong – a concern that dates back to R.M.Williams’ founding.

Each pair is made from responsibly sourced premium quality leather and features a durable Goodyear welt sole. The result is a sleek, luxurious day-to-day boot designed with longevity in mind.

This ethos of circularity has been ever present in R.M.Williams’ history, long before such phrases were commonplace. Founded 92 years ago by Reginald Murray Williams, the company has always stood for quality, durability, and timeless design. Originally created to endure the harsh Australian outback, R.M.Williams boots have evolved into a global symbol of style and craftsmanship. Each pair is still handmade in Australia using traditional techniques that embody the brand’s commitment to authenticity and endurance.

Each boot is the bringing together of over 80 time-honoured processes, completed using tools and techniques handed down through generations. And behind every boot are 80 pairs of hands, without whom it would not be possible to create these masterful pieces of footwear. From choosing the leather through to the crafting process, each step is owned by R.M.Williams’ highly skilled craftspeople in the brand’s Adelaide workshop.

Though known the world over for their footwear, the brand’s ever-growing apparel range embraces

“Though known the world over for their footwear, the brand’s evergrowing apparel range embraces the same dedication to quality Australian design that their boots do. ”
“Each pair is still handmade in Australia using traditional techniques that embody the brand’s commitment to authenticity and endurance. ”

the same dedication to quality Australian design that their boots do. Visitors to the store can expect to find elegant merino wool jumpers, crisp linen shirts, and breathable organic cotton.

A particular highlight are the exquisite hats on display, sourced from an icon of Australian culture – Akubra. Originally built to withstand the heat of the Aussie sun, the range available at R.M.Williams is a pleasing medley of contemporary and traditional.

Today, the brand is equally at home in the city as it is in the countryside. But it has refused to give up its rural charm, and that is why the Marlow store has joined its two London counterparts, with plans to open another new store in Cambridge later this year.

As R.M.Williams continues to expand, it’s set to become a go-to brand for UK customers seeking high-quality, timeless footwear and apparel. By staying true to its heritage while embracing innovation, the brand appeals to a new generation that values craftsmanship, sustainability, and authenticity.

With a rich history and a forward-thinking approach, R.M.Williams offers more than just boots—it offers a legacy that can be cherished for generations. The opening of the Marlow store, exclusive collections, and the brand’s commitment to sustainability mark an exciting new chapter for this iconic Australian brand in the UK.

The R.M.Williams store is now open at: 46 High St, Marlow SL7 1AT.

Meet a local charity which wants you to be part of their story

It is an all too familiar tale for tens of thousands of parents around the UK.

Children who become seriously ill as a baby, toddler or child can turn a family’s life upside down. Days become dominated by a tireless search for a diagnosis, and rounds of appointments to understand it - and what can be done. Then there are trips in and out of hospital navigating tests and treatments, scares and setbacks … all while managing work and the demands of caring for the rest of their family.

But there is another story, and it is being told right here in Buckinghamshire by an Amershambased charity which is transforming the life and experience of families caring for children living with the most complex, lifelong conditions.

Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity works in partnership with the NHS to provide Roald Dahl Nurses who are specialists in their field and who help families co-ordinate care while delivering a unique kind of emotional and practical support. And those families report feeling less isolated, stressed and confused as a result – their Roald Dahl Nurses quickly taking them to a place where they can not only have confidence in their healthcare, but feel more

Did you know…

…charity supporters have made a marvellous difference this year, raising vital funds as they’ve completed community challenges – everything from festive walks to full on marathons. In fact, just this month

Buckinghamshire’s own 1st Prestwood Brownies took their area by storm as they set out to raise £250 for Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity on a two-mile walk. By the end of the day they’d secured nearly £1,500 thanks to the businesses, community groups and residents who lined the way.

empowered to manage and enjoy their family life even with all its challenges. Even with all the fear they might feel about what might happen next.

“There are around 150 Roald Dahl nurses working in NHS Trusts across the UK,” says the charity’s Chief Executive Louise Griew. “They make such an amazing difference, not only enriching the lives of more than 36,000 children across the UK at any one time, but enriching the NHS Trusts where they are based with their innovative way of working, by sharing best practice and by reducing pressure on services as they co-ordinate care for the families they support.”

But Louise says with the increase in chronic lifelong conditions impacting children, so many more nurses are needed. That’s why the charity is setting out to raise funds to establish more Roald Dahl Nurses across the UK, and to share the difference you could make by supporting them.

If you’d like to be part of their story, visit www.roalddahlcharity.org/donate

Did you know…

…each year, the charity’s royal Patron, Her Majesty The Queen, invites Roald Dahl nurses and the families they care for to visit Clarence House to help decorate the royal Christmas Tree? Holly and Maisie (pictured below) have been nominated to attend by their nurse because of their brave journey following a diagnosis of Rett Syndrome. Watch this space and we’ll bring news of this year’s event.

“Our family life is so different because of our Roald Dahl Nurse Teresa,” says Holly, whose five-year-old daughter Maisie (pictured with her mum and dad and brother Harry) lives with Rett Syndrome. “Teresa is so hard working, so caring, and so supportive. Before we had her, we felt lost, and we don’t anymore. If Maisie is admitted to hospital – as she was last week when she was having epileptic seizures – I call Teresa and she appears, looking for us, asking if I’m alright. You are seeing so many doctors each time and they don’t know Maisie. But with Teresa, we have an expert in the room who cares so much for her, who knows her history, and who I know will fight for what is best for Maisie. That makes a difference that is hard to describe….”

CHEF LAURIE GEAR

November Recipe & Kitchen News

Now the clocks have gone back the evenings are drawing in and a chill is in the air our thoughts turn to warming stews casseroles and pot roasts. November is the time when wild game is in full season. At the restaurant we have venison wild duck and partridge all on our menu to reflect the wonderful local game we have around us in the Chiltern Hills. For this month I have chosen to champion pheasant; it is low in fat, readily available, cost effective and above all delicious, the puy lentils

help add an element of richness and soak up all those wonderful winter flavours. As an alternative chicken works extremely well and for a vegetarian option the meat & stock can be replaced using  vegetable stock and vegetarian suet dumplings can crown your dish all sprinkled with a generous handful of your favourite herbs. Whichever you decide to go with this month’s recipe let’s celebrate the new season with slow cooking and hearty warming dishes, it’s certainly one of my favourite times of year !.

The World of Tim Burton

Until

21

April 2025 at the Design Museum. In partnership with Harvey Nichols

The Design Museum has revealed for the first time the highlights of its major autumn exhibition on the exceptional career of director Tim Burton.

Visitors to the museum in west London are invited to step into The World of Tim Burton and to journey through five remarkable decades of creativity. Today the famed and fascinating objects which will be seen are announced — from Tim Burton’s earliest unrealised projects to his most recent film, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024).

Over 600 incredible items will be brought together in the exhibition to chart the evolution of Burton’s unique design aesthetic. Objects are loaned from Tim Burton’s extensive personal archives, key film studio archives including Paramount, Amazon MGM Studios, and Warner Bros., and the private collections of Burton’s collaborators. Many items have never been on public display in the UK before.

Highlights include hundreds of Burton’s expressionistic sketches and drawings that he has created prolifically since childhood. These will be seen alongside props, set designs, and costumes from his iconic films, including Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman costume from 1992’s Batman Returns, and the black and white striped dress from 1999’s Sleepy Hollow, worn by Christina Ricci.

The World of Tim Burton will showcase Burton’s remarkable output, with over 18 of his films individually spotlighted in the exhibition. It will celebrate the creative processes behind some of the most significant movies of the past five decades, including Beetlejuice (1988), Batman (1989), Edward Scissorhands (1990), and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).

The exhibition comes to London after a hugely successful decade-long world tour that has seen it visit 14 cities in 11 countries since 2014. Yet not only will this be the first and only time it will be

seen in the UK, it will also be the very final time the exhibition will be staged. For this very special homecoming – to Tim Burton’s adopted home city – it has been specially adapted, expanded, and physically reimagined for the Design Museum. Visitors will for the first time be able to take a deeper look at the director’s work by seeing it through a design lens. With the addition of over 90 new objects to the exhibition, this iteration of the show will examine Burton’s hands-on and design-led approach to filmmaking.

A major aspect will also be the spotlighting of his long-term collaborations with designers working across costume, set and production design. This includes the renowned costume designer Colleen Atwood, production designer Rick Heinrichs, architect and designer Anton Furst, and the award-winning puppet makers and stop-motion animators Mackinnon and Saunders.

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH HARVEY NICHOLS

The World of Tim Burton is presented in partnership with Harvey Nichols. To celebrate the exhibition and its new partnership with the Design Museum, Harvey Nichols will unveil a Burtonesque Christmas window display later this year. It will feature five unique objects from Tim Burton’s private collection, previously showcased in his exhibitions around the globe. designmuseum.org @designmuseum

Opening the door to your child’s future

A guide to School Open Days

As we approach the new term, it is now when thoughts turn to Independent School Open Days - allowing you to get a genuine feel for the school and whether on first impressions it is right for your child.

TOP TIPS FOR GETTING THE MOST OUT OF A SCHOOL OPEN DAY…

•Check on the school website if you need to make an appointment prior to visiting

•It is vital that you are prepared so read their school brochures thoroughly

•Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important. Children will get an idea whether they feel comfortable there.

•Talk to as many people as you can: pupils, teachers and the headmaster ideally

•Take an independent walk around with your child and chat about any reservations you might both have.

QUESTIONS TO ASK AT A SCHOOL OPEN DAY….

Some questions will differ according to your child’s age and whether you are visiting a day or boarding school.

•How selective is the school academically and what is the current pass rate for the common entrance exam?

•Are there high expectations and high academic achievements?

•Is the curriculum broad and well balanced? (you want your child to be successful but not too

“Take your child with you – their opinion is the most important”

compelled in pressure)

•What are the classroom sizes?

•What is expected of my child with regard to homework?

•Is there a healthy balance of fun and academia?

•Is there a bullying policy?

•What lunchtime meals are available?

•What sports and music facilities are available?

•What after school clubs and trips are available?

•How many pupils branch out into further education?

After the tour, you may have the opportunity to meet other parents and children on a more informal footing whereby the teachers and the head can answer queries over coffee and biscuits.

It's Your future It's Our guidance

Thorpe House School’s co-educational Sixth Form, in the heart of Gerrards Cross, offers young men and women first class teaching with an emphasis on academic achievement, the development of key life skills, leadership and exploration, extended pastoral care, and bespoke university and careers guidance.

Discover more at our Open Evening Thursday 21st November 2024, 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

The Last Noel Navigating Your Final Christmas Together Before Divorce

Christmas, whilst typically a time filled with joy, can also be a time of great difficulty and sadness. The pressures of striving to achieve the “perfect” holiday can leave many relationships at boiling point whilst uncovering differences which cannot be resolved. For others who have already decided that separation is inevitable, the desire to spend one last Christmas together as a family for the benefit of the children can be daunting and exhausting as you try to maintain a façade that all is well.

Many parents agree to “get through” Christmas, knowing that in the new year they will seek advice about the divorce process. Delaying the start of a divorce until after the school holidays is one of the reasons that divorce enquiries typically rise in January.

If you have decided that there is no prospect of reconciliation, the festive period provides space and time for reflection about what Christmas going forward might look like. There will no doubt be changes in arrangements and consideration will need to be given to what might logistically work for your children.

The festive period affords you the opportunity to take stock and consider whether divorce is the right path to pursue and to deal with the process at a point in time that is less stressful to you both. Avoiding acrimony is better for everybody’s sake but especially for your children.

The arena of divorce and separation may already be familiar to you if you’re in the midst of your journey. This comes with its own challenges such as trying to agree when the children will spend time with you or your former partner over the Christmas period and who will have them for Christmas Day. There is never an easy solution to these difficulties but creating new traditions within the separate family units can create excitement for children in what might be very different circumstances.

If you are struggling to agree child arrangements for the Christmas period and may already be embroiled within Children Act proceedings and experiencing huge court delays, the Family Mediation Voucher Scheme may assist. This scheme is designed to support families in reaching an amicable settlement out of court and if you are eligible, which you can check by visiting the relevant links on the government website, a contribution of £500 will be provided towards the costs of mediation.

Wherever you are in your separation or divorce journey we are here to help. If you’d like to speak to a family lawyer in confidence, please email B P Collins’ family team at enquiries@bpcollins.co.uk or call 01753 889995. www.bpcollins.co.uk

Family mediation at Christmas

The holiday season is a time of celebration and family gatherings. However, for separated or divorced parents, it can also be a period of stress and conflict, particularly when there is no clear plan for child arrangements over the festive break. Although there are many legal avenues to resolve such disputes, mediation is often the most preferred route by many. Lucinda Holliday, Partner and Head of Family & Divorce at Blaser Mills Law, explains how mediation can help to relieve some stress this Christmas.

What is mediation?

Mediation is a voluntary process where a neutral third party, known as a mediator, helps the disputing parents to reach an agreement. In the context of family law, mediation can be used to resolve a wide range of issues, including child arrangements during the holidays. The mediator does not make decisions for the parties but facilitates communication and negotiation between them to help them reach a mutually acceptable solution.

The benefits

Mediation offers several advantages over litigation. It is generally quicker, less stressful, and less expensive than going to court. It also allows the parties to maintain control over the decision-making process, which can be particularly beneficial when dealing with sensitive issues such as child arrangements. Additionally, mediation encourages cooperation and communication, which can help to improve the long-term relationship between the parents, ultimately benefiting the children. The process

The mediation process typically begins with an initial meeting, known as a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAM). During this meeting, the mediator will explain the process, assess whether mediation is suitable for your situation, and answer any questions you may have.

If both parties agree to proceed with mediation, the mediator will arrange a series of sessions where you and the other parent can discuss your issues. These sessions are confidential, and the mediator will ensure that both parties have an equal opportunity to express their views and concerns.

During the mediation sessions, the mediator will help you and the other parent to explore different options and negotiate an agreement. If an agreement is reached, the mediator will draft a Memorandum of Understanding, which outlines the terms of the agreement. This document is not legally binding, but it can be converted into a legally binding court order if necessary.

What can I do if I don’t have a plan?

If you and the other parent have not yet agreed on where the children will spend Christmas, mediation can be an effective way to resolve this issue. Below are some steps you can take:

1. Contact a mediator: Lucinda Holliday can facilitate mediation at Blaser Mills Law, she also offers child inclusive mediation.

2. Attend a MIAM: This meeting will help you understand what mediation involves and whether it’s the right approach for your situation.

3. Prepare: Ahead of the sessions, think about what you want to achieve and any potential compromises you might be willing to make. It can also be helpful to seek legal advice so that you understand your rights and responsibilities.

4. Participate: Try to stay open-minded, listen to the other parent’s perspective, and focus on the best interests of the children. Remember, the goal is not to ‘win’ but to reach a solution that works for everyone.

5. Implement: If an agreement is reached, make sure you understand the terms and how they will be implemented. If necessary, you can ask the mediator to draft a court order to make the agreement legally binding.

In conclusion, while disputes about child arrangements during Christmas can be challenging, mediation offers a constructive and cooperative way to resolve these issues. By focusing on the best interests of the children and working towards a mutually acceptable solution, parents can ensure that the festive season is a time of joy and celebration for everyone.

Lets Talk Implants

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is titanium, cylindrical, threaded fixture that is inserted into the jawbone to replace a missing root. The implant is then used as the foundation for the new crown. Dental implants can be used to replace a single tooth or a full mouth with no teeth. Titanium is a unique material in that new bone will grow onto the surface of the implant therefore “fusing” the implant to bone, a process known as osseointegration.

What are the benefits of implants?

Implant secured or stabilised replacement teeth are more comfortable than conventional dentures because there is no slipping or movement. This eliminates some of the key worries of dentures and improves self confidence.

Dental implants are the alternative to bridgework for permanently replacing missing teeth, eliminating the need to grind down healthy teeth. When teeth are missing the surrounding bone begins to shrink. Dental implants can help maintain the shape and structure of the jaw bone.

How long does it take?

It depends on the complexity of the treatment plan. Work may need to be carried out prior to commencing implant therapy. This may include improving oral hygiene, fillings, crowns and extractions. Also in certain situations, pre-operative bone grafts may be required in order to provide sufficient bone for implants.

For routine cases osseointegration takes 5 to 6 months in the upper jaw and 3 to 4 months in the lower jaw. Further tissue healing, impressions and fitting of the crown can take another month or so. The availability of better bone can be used to decrease treatment time, whilst more time and care must be taken with poorer bone, which can therefore extend treatment times. If there is no reason to shorten the duration of your treatment then be prepared to wait- nobody loses an implant from being patient and allowing nature to take its course.

Are they successful?

Dental implants produce predictable long term results and well maintained implants can be expected to last for many years and probably for your lifetime. Just like your own natural teeth, implants require regular follow up and professional cleaning by an implant hygienist as well as maintenance.

Currently failure rates are much less than 5%

Is it uncomfortable?

Implant surgery is a minor operation. Most patients would say it is less painful than an extraction. But it is wise to avoid significant social engagements for 5 days postoperatively as some minor swelling and bruising can occur. For most patients simple painkillers are required, but we may also prescribe stronger painkillers if necessary. Antibiotics may also be prescribed. Although most implant operations are straightforward and can be carried out under local anaesthetic, some patients are understandably anxious. For this reason many patients choose to have the first stage (implant placement) carried out under oral or intravenous sedation.

Are implants expensive?

Implants may seem expensive initially, but in the long term they are more cost effective without damaging the adjacent teeth and are placed by surgeons who have undergone post-graduate training.

Will I be without teeth?

It is normally necessary, particularly towards the front of the mouth, to construct some form of temporary teeth. These may be temporary crowns, bridges, or dentures. It is also possible to use immediate temporary implants to give rigid fixation while the final implants osseointegrate.

CARE AS AND WHEN YOU NEED IT

The benefits of respite, or a short stay, in a care home

Taking a break is essential, especially when caring for a loved one. Providing care can be both rewarding and demanding, and a short stay in a care home—known as respite care— can provide much needed relief, while your loved one enjoys a safe, comfortable environment with personalised care.

The Fremantle Trust is a not-for-profit charity that has care and people at the heart of everything it does. Their experienced teams provide compassionate, professional care and is here to help you explore the best options for you or your loved one.

What is respite care?

Respite care is a short-term stay, typically lasting one to six weeks, in a care home. The Fremantle Trust offers this type of care to support both caregivers, and those receiving care. It’s a chance for caregivers to rest, knowing their loved one is receiving compassionate care in a home from home setting.

When to arrange respite care

Respite care is flexible and can suit a range of needs. It might be right for you if you are planning a holiday, in need of extra help during a busy period like the Christmas season, or if your loved one needs support recovering after an illness or operation. It might benefit your loved one to have a change of scenery or time amongst other people.

Respite care is also an opportunity to try a care home as a potential longer-term care solution.

The benefits of respite care

A short stay allows you, the caregiver, to step away from caregiving duties and focus on your own well-being, confident that your loved one is in a safe, nurturing environment. During a respite stay at the Fremantle Trust, your loved one will enjoy the same level of care and attention as long-term residents, with access to amenities, daily social activities, new experiences and nutritious meals. The Fremantle Trust encourages each person to maintain independence and enjoy life fully, whether through recovery support or joining in daily activities. Our short stays can be booked up to 12 months in advance, providing you the option to plan ahead.

A short stay with the Fremantle Trust is more than a break—it’s a chance for your loved one to experience caring, personalised support in a warm, welcoming setting.

To learn more about our short stays, visit: www.fremantletrust.org to find a care home near you or speak to our team by calling 0333 222 0920.

Let’s talk about sex

Let’s face it we all do it, we all think about it and we all need it…. Be it in different forms and different ways. We all need sex. Whether on your own or as part of a couple (or more!) it’s an important part of human connection and expression.

Except when we can’t or there’s a problem. Then it becomes very difficult to talk about it and perhaps to seek help or to even know where to go. There can be many reasons why sex may not work. There can be pain, dryness or for men a lack of function making penetration difficult. For either men or women libido can drop and this can happen for many reasons. Stress, kids,

lack of sleep or exercise can contribute to the sex hormones being diverted to form cortisol and this can impact your desire. For women the post-natal or perimenopause phase can be a very challenging time.

In our clinic we are used to asking patients about any sexual issues they have. Once the acknowledgment is there that this is a safe space to discuss it can open up an honest conversation about the issues and how we can help. Technology has come a long way when it comes to helping sexual dysfunction. From the advent of medications such as Viagra to now using the latest machines which use high frequency waves to treat pelvic conditions, there is a myriad of solutions we can offer to solve all sorts of issues.

We use the Afrodite wand machine to help treat vaginal disorders such as dryness, weak pelvic floor, prolapse or urinary incontinence. This is a safe, well tolerated treatment which lasts 20 minutes and has no down time. It works by electromagnetic waves to help stimulate vaginal tissue which can also tighten and lift.

Hopefully you can take the next step if you feel you need help and reach out to your doctor to strike up a conversation. Chiltern Private has clinics in South Bucks and also in central London in the Harley Street area.

The Transformative Power of Breathwork

Until recently, breathwork in the West has generally been experienced as part of an activity such as yoga or meditation. However, with increasing research proving its incredible healing benefits, this ancient practice is currently enjoying a rise in popularity in mainstream wellness as a stand-alone discipline.

As a yoga teacher, I understand the power of the breath to help rebalance a dysregulated nervous system and thus improve both health and wellbeing. So, when I met Caroline Boyle, Seed’s Breath Guide, and learned about her breathwork classes, I was intrigued to find out more.

So, what is breathwork?

Breathwork means taking conscious control of your breathing pattern to improve your physical, mental and emotional state. It encompasses a variety of breathing techniques, from simple breathing patterns such as box breathing though to fully guided sessions.

Caroline’s journey to becoming a breath guide began during her treatment for breast cancer.  Said Caroline. “Following my diagnosis and faced with a treatment plan which included 16 rounds of chemotherapy and surgery, I felt totally out of

control.  I knew I needed to do something to support myself through this challenging period. I began to practice breathwork each morning and the change I felt was incredible, I began to feel calm, connected and positive.

“When my treatment was finished I booked myself into a breathwork retreat in Sweden, where the full transformational breathwork experience blew me away.  I decided to return there to train as a qualified breath guide so I could bring this incredible healing tool to others.”

Caroline offers 6 different breathwork sessions for beginners through to advanced breathers.  These include: Introduction, Base, Heal, Elixir, Power and Resilience. Each session delivers a unique experience using different breathing techniques such as deep circular breathing, breath retention and breath holds.

Said Caroline, “Through conscious breathing techniques, we can begin to move stuck energy in the body. The physical act of breathing deeply signals to our nervous systems that it is safe to let go, encouraging the release of tension in both body and mind. It creates a safe non-judgemental space for tears, memories and even anger to be expressed.”

Physical benefits of breathwork include:

• Reduced stress / anxiety

• Improved respiratory function

• Enhanced immune function

• Lower blood pressure

• Improved cardiovascular function

• Enhanced athletic performance and endurance

• Improved pain management

• Improved digestion

• Improved sleep

DESIGNING FITNESS

7 Steps to Design & Plan a Home Gym

Designing a home fitness set-up can be daunting, especially for those with limited knowledge of health and fitness. Creating an efficient and appealing home gym requires thoughtful planning and strategic equipment selection.

Russell Dale, lead design consultant at WATERROWER | NOHRD, has over 15 years of experience working with clients in Buckinghamshire and the surrounding areas to incorporate exercise equipment into their living spaces—whether it’s creating dedicated gym rooms or integrating equipment into open-plan living areas.

We caught up with Russell to get his insights on planning your home fitness space.

1. Define Your Goals

Consider your fitness preferences—whether strength, cardio, flexibility, or a combination. Defining your goals early ensures the gym design and equipment align with your intended workouts. For instance, prioritise space for weightlifting if strength training is your focus, or create a functional area for yoga and stretching if flexibility is key. When setting your goals, it’s important to identify both what you enjoy and the areas of fitness you need to improve to optimise overall health and well-being.

2. Assess Available Space

Start by assessing the area where your gym will be set up, as this will guide equipment and layout decisions. A well-planned home gym should allow ample space for movement without feeling cramped. Measure the available space, considering both the floor area and ceiling height, to ensure it can accommodate larger machines like a treadmill. Keep in mind that some equipment may need to be attached to a load-bearing or reinforced wall. For smaller spaces, opt for space-saving equipment that maximises available area. Versatile machines, such as the SlimBeam cable machine by NOHRD, are compact yet multifunctional, making them ideal for limited spaces. Alternatively, a WaterRower rowing machine offers a more comprehensive workout compared to a treadmill or stationary bike.

“A well-planned home gym should allow ample space for movement without feeling cramped”

3. Plan the Layout

A well-organised layout enhances usability. Depending on your goals, divide the area into zones based on workout types: cardio machines, strength training, and stretching or bodyweight exercises. When positioning equipment, consider mains power requirements, safety, and convenience, ensuring there is ample clearance for movement. Mirrors can create an open feel and help with formchecking during exercises.

4. Prioritise Aesthetics

To seamlessly integrate a home gym into your living space, aim for an aesthetic that complements your home’s design. Choose equipment in materials and finishes that suit your décor and create a space where you’ll enjoy spending time. This approach ensures the gym becomes a cohesive part of your home rather than a separate or disruptive space.

1. Invest in Quality

Investing in high-quality fitness equipment ensures durability, safety, and long-term value. Well-made equipment is built to last, withstanding frequent use without breaking down. It also offers superior ergonomics and features, enhancing your workout experience and reducing the risk of injury. Over time, reliable machines deliver better performance, making the investment cost-effective. High-quality equipment also tends to include advanced features, allowing for a wider range of exercises and progress tracking, ultimately improving your fitness journey.

2. Integrating Technology

Fitness apps and technology can enhance home workouts with guided sessions, progress tracking, and real-time feedback. Brands like Peloton offer virtual trainers but require monthly subscriptions and limit versatility. In contrast, equipment like the WaterRower offers Bluetooth connectivity, compatible with various apps, providing more freedom of choice. However, technology isn’t essential for everyone. Some users may prefer a tech-free approach, focusing on the basics for a more mindful, distraction-free workout. Ultimately, it’s about creating a space that matches your fitness style and helps you stay consistent with your goals.

“High-quality equipment also tends to include advanced features, allowing for a wider range of exercises and progress tracking, ultimately improving your fitness journey”

3. Flooring Focus

Flooring is often overlooked. While some equipment can be used on regular domestic flooring, high-impact exercises, heavy weights, or machines can damage standard floors. Rubber tiles provide shock absorption and protect the subfloor but can be unsightly. WATERROWER | NOHRD has developed a range of rubber-backed gym flooring in materials such as cork, offering both durability and aesthetic appeal.

WATERROWER | NOHRD is renowned for premium, design-led fitness equipment, handcrafted in the USA and Germany. Connect with Russell and his team of gym design specialists for a complimentary, no-obligation consultation at their Brand Stores in Central London or High Wycombe.

Holiday legs

Are you planning a holiday but are anxious about your visible leg veins?

Varicose veins can be uncomfortable and unsightly, draining your self-confidence.

Don’t shy away from varicose vein treatment, help is on hand to find a procedure that is tailored to you and your lifestyle.

Do you suffer with:

Raised bulging veins on skin

Swollen feet and ankles

Aching, heavy legs

Leg cramps and twitching

Blue veins under the skin surface

Visible thread veins

What’s the best varicose vein treatment for me?

Book a private consultation with Michael Gaunt for an in-depth review of your varicose veins and vascular health.

He will personally answer your concerns, examine your legs and perform a Duplex ultrasound scan to determine the best treatment options for you.

Treatments include the Endovenous Laser technique, ClariVein™, ultrasound-guided foam sclerotherapy and saline injection microsclerotherapy, as well as VeinWave for facial thread veins.

Michael will ensure you fully understand the procedure, aftercare and costs allowing you to select any of his hospital-based clinics in London or Cambridge for treatment.

Can I fly with varicose veins?

Yes, but hours of sitting, coupled with dehydration and changes in altitude, can exacerbate vascular issues. Prolonged inactivity can increase the risks of developing blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Swelling, discomfort, cramps and leg pain are symptoms of poor circulation due to varicose veins.

Follow Michael’s top-tips for travelling comfortably:

1. Stay Active: Take breaks during long journeys to walk and stretch your legs.

2.  Hydrate: Proper hydration is vital for maintaining healthy blood circulation. Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of blood clots.

3.  Wear Compression Socks: Compression socks can help improve circulation and alleviate symptoms associated with varicose veins. Wear them before and during travel to minimize discomfort and swelling in your legs.

4.  Elevate Your Legs:  When you can, lift your legs to reduce swelling and improve blood flow.

5.  Choose comfortable clothes and shoes: Avoid tight fitting clothes and shoes as they can exacerbate circulation issues.

“If you have varicose veins or any other risk factors, I recommend a thorough venous assessment before a long flight or coach trip”

Regents Park Aesthetics

The cutting edge of skincare

How pioneering regenerative aesthetics can help restore your skin the natural way

If you’re a beauty connoisseur, you’ll already know that the future of cosmetic treatments is more than skin deep. Regenerative aesthetics offers a game-changing approach to maintaining a youthful appearance by harnessing the body’s own ability to restore itself – giving nature a nudge, if you will.

An offshoot of regenerative medicine such as stem cell therapy, it can help with everything from fine lines and wrinkles, to hyperpigmentation, acne, stretch marks and uneven skin tone. Here comes the science: These innovative therapies integrate principles from biology, engineering and clinical medicine to repair, replace or regenerate skin tissue and restore its normal function.

Regents Park Aesthetics has been at the cutting edge of the beauty industry since 2012, with clinics in Central London, Berkamsted and the Caribbean island of Antigua, each with a medically-trained team at the fore. Its owner and key practitioner - awardwinning nurse Kay Greveson - says the real beauty of regenerative aesthetics is that it offers a natural and enduring solution for ageing skin.

Well, this sounds exciting. Is it too good to be true?

“Not at all. Regenerative treatments offer great results and use natural, purified ingredients so the risk of complications is extremely low, making

them a safe and popular choice among patients.

“There are multiple options available; some have been around for a while, such as stem cell therapy, epidermal growth factors which help skin regenerate, and platelet-rich plasma, while newer options include the use of polynucleotides and exosomes.

“These techniques address the cellular causes of ageing, rather than just fixing the signs of it.”

Tell us more about polynucleotides.

“This is a pioneering, injectable treatment that is actually derived from salmon DNA. It naturally stimulates collagen production to enhance skin elasticity and facilitate cellular repair. It’s an exceptional choice for people wishing to mitigate signs of ageing, like fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots and crepiness, as well as just improving the overall quality of their skin.

“It improves the texture and tone of

the skin for a smoother, more radiant complexion. PN therapy can also diminish the appearance of blemishes including acne scars.

“It’s also popular because it’s quick, virtually painless and has minimal downtime.

“Polynucleotides are typically injected under the eyes, along with the neck, cheeks, jawline and forehead. A course of three is recommended, with the results lasting for several months.”

Ok, so what about exosomes?

“Exosome therapy is a fairly new, professional-level skin treatment often used in sync with laser therapy, or microneedling which involves pricking

the skin with tiny sterilised needles to prompt the skin to make more collagen and elastin. After having such a treatment, an exosome serum is layered onto the skin.

“Exosomes are essentially tiny particles released by cells that carry messages and materials, helping cells communicate and share resources with each other in the body. They transfer proteins, lipids and other molecules between cells to regulate various biological processes, including healing and tissue regeneration.

“They work by stimulating collagen and elastin production to make the skin firmer and smoother. Exosomes also have anti-inflammatory properties which can reduce redness and irritation, making them suitable for sensitive or damaged skin.

“In the UK, only non-human exosomes are used, often from plant cells.”

What’s the difference between polynucleotides and exosomes?

“The main difference is that polynucleotides are injected into the skin while exosomes are not.

“Both treatments can be used alongside other therapies such as injectables, microneedling and

radiofrequency to boost the results and offer a 3D holistic approach to skin rejuvenation.

“What they also have in common is that, in addition to being used on the skin to improve elasticity and overall skin health, they can also be applied to the scalp to stimulate hair growth.”

Why choose Regents Park Aesthetics?

“We only use the highest quality products for all of our treatments, such as PLINEST polynucleotides which are one of the best on the market, and ExoCoBio exosome treatment derived from rose plants.

“We offer a very personal service, catering to each patient’s individuality, as evidenced in our hundreds of excellent Google reviews. Our entire team is trained to the very highest standards, and we are certified by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), just like a medical clinic, to offer our clients an extra layer of confidence.”

Joyful later living without the wait Rent with Pegasus Homes

Whether downsizing, moving closer to family and friends, or simply seeking something new, at Pegasus Homes we believe retirement signifies a new beginning. However, we understand that the process of moving home at any age can be a big undertaking, with many of our customers moving on from the large, family homes that they have lived in for many years.

In the heart of the scenic and historic village of Wooburn Green, Pegasus Wooburn Bales is a contemporary collection of one, two and threebedroom homes for those looking to make the most out of life. Designed specifically for the oversixties, life at Wooburn Bales is not just about the home, but offers an independent lifestyle, as part of a sociable and welcoming community.

Renting in retirement

Pegasus Homes’ latest data showed over a third of over 55s (35%) cited high costs of moving, like stamp duty, as barriers to downsizing to a more suitable home. Whilst owning one’s home has always been seen to offer stability, choosing to rent in later life can provide both flexibility and financial liquidity when paired with downsizing, whilst removing the responsibility of costly home repairs and maintenance.

For local retired GP, Dr. Andrew Weber, looking for a home for his mother-in-law, the option to rent gave them the flexibility and equity to be able to do as she wished without home ownership holding her back.

“Home is more than just bricks and mortar, and it is the personal touch paired with discretion that sets our communities apart”

Andrew explained: “Investing in a property didn’t feel like the right option with the additional costs such as stamp Duty fees. Renting appealed to us precisely for its flexibility, allowing us to adapt to changing circumstances and needs.”

Home is more than just bricks and mortar, and it is the personal touch paired with discretion that sets our communities apart. Wooburn Bales has a dedicated on-site host charged with making life a little easier, bringing residents together for social events and acting as a first port of call for queries and local knowledge.

Andrew commented: “Wooburn Bales is the perfect community for my mother-in-law – it is a great place for rebuilding social connections and making retirement life as rewarding as possible. She wouldn’t have moved if it wasn’t for Pegasus.”

LIGHTING REPORT

As darkness draws in, and with a renewed focus on the ambiance and feel of our homes, lighting design is under the spotlight, shaping the atmosphere in ways that go far beyond pure illumination. As technology, craft and imagination intersect, lights are now so much more than just functional – they have become statement pieces that reflect individual style and set the tone of a space. From sculptural forms that demand attention and create drama to calming designs that draw on the home’s ever-increasing connection to nature, lighting is evolving to enhance not just how we see a room, but how we experience it.

For 2024, lighting trends are pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation, with an emphasis on unique forms, expressive design and a contemporary connection to nature. Whether it’s bold, futuristic structures or a spectrum of colours from dramatic to calm, lighting has become an art form in its own right. As the design world increasingly moves towards curating spaces that feel personal and meaningful, lighting has evolved into an essential tool to transform a space from

every day to exceptional – and not only with luminescence. Here’s where contemporary pendant lights, table lights, floor lights, wall lights and more are heading.

TIMBER TOUCH:

Sleek materials like glass and metal often define lighting design, but the introduction of timber brings a soothing warmth, infusing nature into the modern home. Juxtaposing the soft pattern of grain and timber’s alluring organic texture with modern technology creates a captivating balance between nature and innovation. One element feels artisanal and ancient, the other, precise and industrial. Together, they form a fusion that feels both timeless and forward-thinking, inviting us to bask in the tactile beauty of the natural world alongside the precision of contemporary design.

OPAQUE DIFFUSION:

“The introduction of timber brings a soothing warmth, infusing nature into the modern home”

Clear bulbs? Not anymore. Modern designs favor opaque, misty, white-toned glass, emitting soft, diffused light that transforms a room into a serene, tranquil haven. The subtle white-ness adds understated elegance while offering space for

experimentation. Oversized and artistic, these glass bulbs, often perched on minimalist bases, seem to defy gravity, creating focal points that elevate a room’s ambiance. It’s all about the mood they set, rather than their understated aesthetic appeal.

THE ART OF LIGHTING:

Is it a bird? A plane? No, it’s a sculptural designer floor lamp. Lighting is evolving beyond function, prioritizing bold, artistic statements over pure illumination. Gone are the days of task lights—now, freestanding lamps embrace originality and creative form. From gravity-defying designs to totem-like structures, lighting pushes boundaries, transforming into art pieces rather than mere light sources. Expect ever-bolder designs as our perceptions of what a lamp should be continue to shift.

SOFT ROSE:

The pastel lighting colour of the moment? A delicate rose pink takes the spotlight, adding subtle, sugary charm to interiors. This nearlyneutral tone brings playful sweetness without overwhelming, blending effortlessly with white or clear glass. Often featured in pared-back shapes or on smaller accents, this soft hue shines with understated whimsy, transforming lighting into both functional pieces and artful statements that sprinkle spaces with joy.

LINEAR LIGHTING:

Today’s pendant lights shed utilitarian vibes,

favouring elongated, eye-level designs that illuminate entire surfaces—ideal for dining tables or islands. These streamlined pieces replace rows of matching pendants, cutting back on ceiling support and wiring. Designs range from minimal, thin lines to thicker tubes, with options for ornamental bulbs and shades. Efficient-yetbold, they balance simplicity with unexpected details, playfully breaking from uniformity to add personality and brightness to interiors.

HONEY HUED:

This season, honeyed tones take the spotlight in lighting design, casting a soothing glow even when switched off. These rich, golden hues evoke sunset warmth, autumn leaves, and candlelight, infusing spaces with natural comfort. Modern pieces feature all-over golden finishes, often in smooth, rounded shapes reminiscent of honey dips. Large or subtle, honey-hued lights bring an organic, nature-inspired touch indoors, exuding a golden warmth that feels timeless and serene.

PRIMARY BRIGHTS:

Seeking colourful, modern lighting with punch? Primary tones – pillar-box red, sunshine yellow, Yves Klein blue – are ideal. These bold brights demand attention, each adding drama and energy; combine all three for a dynamic, lively atmosphere to invigorate any room. Designs range from chunky, commanding forms to sleek, understated shapes that showcase colour in subtler ways. Primary-coloured lights add personality and flair, serving as eye-catching, conversation-starting focal points and practical sources of illumination for a vibrant, audacious mood. chaplins.co.uk

Wine Bar with a Difference

What’s the concept behind Nellie’s Fine Wine Bar by

Nellies is a concept store where you can enjoy a glass of wine in a decadently designed bar setting, with all of the interiors available to purchase. The ground floor bar features furnishings, flooring, wallpapers, lighting and accessories that are all available to order and clients can sit on and experience our furniture while enjoying a glass of wine, and shop for the home in a really fun way. Upstairs is an interiors boutique & showroom so you can pick up a gift or order a bespoke sofa and everything in between, and on the top floor is our Interior Design studio and client lounge & dining room. As we specialise in bespoke kitchens too, we decided our ‘Bar’ would be a stunningly made bespoke kitchen.

What can clients expect?

We are a really approachable team and our showrooms and wine bar are the perfect welcoming environment to pop into for an informal chat or just to be inspired. We’ve got an extensive fabric and wallpaper library and a lot of beautiful things on display so clients can get to see the quality of our pieces in the flesh.

Designed to be a cosy, decadent bar, Nellies has warm earthy tones and natural textures. Our fixtures and fittings are all available to purchase, the lighting and our wall covering lines are really special.

How does the Interior Design service work?

Although we have a signature style, we love to get to know our clients and what it is that they want to achieve with their space in terms of relaxation and practicality to deliver them a design that is highly personal to them that they’ll love for years to come.

We don’t charge for our time, we just take a design deposit which is fully redeemable on the items purchased, so our design process is entirely free of charge, and one hundred percent of the clients budget goes on the products that they keep. Great design doesn’t have to cost the earth.

Why ‘Nellie’s’?

Nellie is my 6 month old chocolate brown Working Cocker Spaniel, so it’s her bar really! She’s often around for a cuddle and to welcome other dogs too.

Transforming Your Bathroom: How Tiles Can Make a Big Difference

Setting the Style

Tiles are a versatile design element that can set the tone for your bathroom’s aesthetics. Whether you’re aiming for a sleek modern look or a classic vintage charm, tiles offer endless possibilities.

•Modern Appeal: Large-format tiles in neutral tones create a clean, contemporary appearance, making the space feel open and airy.

•Timeless Elegance: Classic subway tiles or intricate mosaic patterns provide a sophisticated and enduring style.

•Bold Statements: Vibrant colors and patterns can serve as focal points, adding character and a personal touch to the space.

Enhancing Visual Appeal

The aesthetic appeal of your bathroom can be significantly improved with tiles. Their diversity in style promotes artistic expression and can support the development of a unified aesthetic. There are several approaches to integrating them into your bathroom. Using feature walls composed of textured or patterned tiles is one way to create a beautiful focal point. The second is to select floor tiles that are strong, low maintenance, and visually striking. The third is to concentrate on tiling the

area behind the washbasin or bathtub to add visual appeal and shield the walls from dampness.

Creating a Sense of Space

Tiles can also influence how spacious or cozy a bathroom feels. Light-colored tiles and large formats can make smaller bathrooms appear larger, while darker or patterned tiles can add warmth and intimacy to more expansive spaces.

•Small Bathrooms: Light and neutral tiles can visually expand the space, making it feel more open and inviting.

•Large Bathrooms: Rich textures and bold designs can make large bathrooms feel more intimate and comfortable

Adding Luxury and Comfort

Tiles can elevate the luxury and comfort of your bathroom. Features like heated floors or natural stone tiles can transform a standard bathroom into a spa-like retreat.

Tiles are more than just a functional element; they’re a transformative design feature that can elevate the style, functionality, and comfort of your bathroom. By choosing the right tiles, you can create a space that not only meets your needs but also reflects your personal style and adds a touch of luxury to your daily routine.

Enjoy nature’s time to plant this Autumn

As the summer flowers fade, Autumn is the perfect time to refresh your garden. Autumn is nature’s planting season so there is plenty you can do to create stunning late-season colour. The warm and moist soil conditions provide the perfect planting environment to help roots establish, resulting in healthier, stronger plants. It is a time to tidy, rake, deadhead and clear beds of any debris. Stubbings Garden Centre, just outside Maidenhead, is a hidden gem with its well-stocked quality plants and a cosy glasshouse Café. Their knowledgeable and friendly staff will give you advice on what is in bloom this time of year to brighten up your outdoor space.

You can add splashes of colour to patios, balconies, beds and even around your front door with Autumn-flowering bedding plants. Plant spring flowering bulbs now for a garden bursting with beautiful flowers early next year. It is a great idea to select bulbs that flower at different times to give you colour throughout the season (early spring: daffodils, late-flowering: tulips and alliums).

Improve your soil with organic matter such as compost or manure to retain moisture, supress weeds and help your plants thrive. Stubbings

Garden Centre have a great range of peat free options to help your garden thrive and can even deliver locally.

Now is also the perfect time for planting fruit, both soft fruit (including raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries and rhubarb) and fruit trees (such as apples, pears, plums and cherries).

For inspiration and ideas, visit Stubbings Garden Centre to make the most of your garden this season. It is located just to the west side of Maidenhead off the A404M, 5-10 minutes from both the M4 and M40.
