With 700 years of fascinating history, there’s a palpable sense of heritage at the heart of Ashridge House. Originally a monastery, it became a royal residence for both Henry VIII and Elizabeth I in 1539. Later, as a private house, British and foreign royalty, prime ministers and the most famous writers and artists of the day were all entertained here.

During both World Wars, the house was a military hospital. Next came a ladies’ finishing school and world-class business school. Today, Ashridge House is an award-winning conference, events, and wedding venue, hosting some of the most opulent celebrations and high-profile business events seen outside of London.

When Clarendon Fine Art opened in Beaconsfield in 2021, it brought with it a new way of engaging with contemporary art. Anyone who has walked through the doors of the gallery will know that it is a bit different from other art venues. Offering a uniquely personal touch, its Art Advisers are not only knowledgeable, they are also passionate about their diverse portfolio and sharing the joy of art collecting. They will pack up their van with paintings and visit clients at their homes, offices or businesses for a bespoke consultation. This is a gallery that, quite literally, goes the extra mile.

Centenary Ale is a 4.4% golden ale, brewed with the finest British malts and hops. First Gold hops have been used to impart a gentle floral aroma, which complement a robust body that boasts deep golden hues.

Centenary Ale will go on sale from Friday August 12th, available from Watford FC’s ‘Hornets Shop’ and Tring Brewery’s brewery shop and website. Nationwide orders of single bottles, three bottle presentation packs and full cases of twelve can be ordered for courier through tringbrewery.co.uk.

This autumn Discover Bucks Museum in Aylesbury is celebrating the Buckinghamshire countryside with a new art exhibition called Beautiful Bucks which runs until the 5th November.

Beautiful Bucks features work by one of the county’s best-known landscape artists, Brian Bennett, who demonstrates an intimate knowledge of our local landscape. Brian Bennett, now in his 95th year, was born in Olney, Bucks and has devoted much of his life to painting scenes in the Chilterns.

Commercial property

In a changing commercial climate, should you negotiate a lease more suited to your business needs?

COVID

19 has accelerated the changes in businesses and how they operate as well as the shape and structure of our High Streets. These changes had already started but are now with us. The expectations of our employees and customers are so different to what they were three years ago. Flexible working and the growth of online retail has changed the way business owners think about their premises and has increased the necessity to “keep their options open”. It is more important than ever in this competitive world to minimise cost risks. My particular area is commercial property, and I am seeing more and more consideration by businesses of the following areas;

Break Clauses - The value of a business is often linked to its premises. A longer lease provides certainty on this point. But we are only too aware now that things can change quickly. Tenant only break clauses at regular intervals gives the business owner the ability to move or even renegotiate with their current landlord.

Repair- Tenants beware of large bills at the end of your lease. Take advice from your surveyor about a schedule of condition reflecting the state the property should be returned in. If it is an old property, consider paying a slightly increased rent with the landlord retaining the exterior and structural repair liability.

Service charge - If you are renting part of a building or premises on an estate, be wary of the service charge provisions in your lease. Think about having a cap on what you pay.

Assignment and sub-letting - You need to ensure that you can pass the premises onto another business easily and with minimal restrictions.

Rent suspension - With the potential risks of a lockdown think about a rent suspension clause if that happens.

Consider all the above to keep your business nimble in an ever-changing economic climate. Take advice from a good surveyor and solicitor before committing yourself. A bit of time and money spent this way could save you a great deal in the future.

Berkhamsted’s best kept secret OPENS ITS DOORS

Ashridge House. A Grade I neo-gothic country house hidden away in 190 acres of exquisite countryside in Berkhamsted.

Ashridge House is the perfect environment to learn, reflect and to be inspired. We invite you to step back into historical elegance, becoming part of the Ashridge House history.

New renovation and restoration

As the world closed borders in 2020, Ashridge House opened doors. Visitor numbers for the private grounds and gardens were increasing as people headed outdoors to socialise, and the team decided to design more open public spaces. The Bakehouse café opened in January 2022 in the sunny courtyard. Renovated in a warm, rustic style, the artisan coffee and delicious seasonal menu have made the Bakehouse a favourite with locals, day trippers and dog walkers alike.

ACRES restaurant was then opened in the original dining hall of the main house. Restored to its former glory, it offers a delicious dining experience focused on locally grown and heritage foods. ACRES is currently open for Sunday lunch bookings and will be opening daily with a new Christmas menu during the festive season.

Expanding offers to the community

Well known artisan florists Hanako Flowers have recently relocated from their home on Berkhamsted High Street. They are delighted to be offering their inspiring workshops and beautiful bouquets in the charming courtyard space of Ashridge House. With a warm and intimate atmosphere infused with history, The Vault bar is opening this winter featuring fine wines, hand-crafted spirits, elegant cocktails and local beers.

We now are offering Annual Passes to our private gardens. Humphry Repton, the greatest landscape architect of his day, was commissioned in 1813 to design the formal gardens, and they remain intact as the finest surviving example of his work. The Monks Garden and Rosary are among the most famous. The gardens are open daily, with passes available from the Bakehouse.

Our rooms and lodges offer a calm overnight escape just next to the main house. Whatever you choose, we have a room for every occasion, from romantic weekend getaway to celebrating life’s biggest moments with family and friends.

What visitors say

“It’s a beautiful place, inside and out in the gardens! They hold special events in the gardens and every year have the open-air cinema, where you can order a special hamper! With NT Ashridge Forest on its doorstep, it’s a beautiful place to walk the dog and get away from it all!” – Elaine

Each available exclusively through sole agents Hamptons, at 1.425 million, the first collection of 10 semi-detached 2,045 sq. ft. three/four-bedroom houses will provide exceptional living spaces, with high ceilings, contemporary kitchens fitted with high-grade integrated appliances, ensuite bathrooms, spacious landscaped front and rear gardens, as well as private driveways and ample visitor parking.

The first phase also includes the impressive Pankhurst Collection of two and three-bedroom ground floor and duplex apartments. Priced from £695,000 and ranging in size from 1,055 sq. ft. to 2,831 sq. ft., the heritage-style homes are wellproportioned and configured to meet modern lifestyle needs, with flexible spaces that can be freely arranged. The majority of homes include private terraces or balconies, as well as allocated parking with the option of electric vehicle charging points.

Setting a new standard of living in the area, the interior design of each home will reflect the prominent surroundings and refined history of the site, with bespoke handmade furniture specially curated to create the highest quality finishes.

A stunning health & wellness spa facility will be open to residents of Newland Park, as well as members of the local community. The state-ofthe-art spa centre will provide a swimming pool, tennis courts and Racquets Club, multi-sports pitches, Padel courts and tennis courts with an

There will also be a courtesy shuttle bus service in operation, exclusively for residents to local commuter stations and popular shopping destinations.

Newland Park will also offer residents direct access to expansive private grounds that have been restored to retain the design and layout created by eminent landscape designer Thomas Mawson in 1903.

Steeped in history, Newland Park has been home to or welcomed a wide range of eminent figures. One of the most notable to frequent the manor house is King George III, who used to enjoy hunting on the grounds with then owner Henry Gott.

Surrounded by thick woodland, Newland Park offers fantastic privacy, which once made the former estate the perfect safe haven for Emmeline Pankhurst and numerous Suffragette members. Under the ownership of politician and women’s rights advocate Henry Devenish Harben and his wife Agnes Harben (founder of the United Suffragists) the house and grounds became a refuge for suffragettes from 1910 to 1921.

The calm and peaceful setting has also attracted numerous famous authors, poets and playwrights, such as acclaimed author H.G. Wells and Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw.

Clarendon Fine Art

Bringing art to the people of Beaconsfield – personally.

Situated in Grove Court on Station Road, Clarendon has become an important part of Beaconsfield’s cultural and retail community. Specialising in modern and contemporary art, the gallery has curated a portfolio with collectors and investors in mind, commissioning and acquiring a superior range of original paintings to cross a wide spectrum of styles and genres. In addition they seek out the most exciting emerging talents from around the world and have an outstanding portfolio of rising stars.

The gallery is proud to feature highly-regarded artists, from Christian Hook and Jeffrey Pratt to Banksy and Mr. Brainwash. They have expertise in pop, street and experimental art from Europe and the US as well as 20th century masterworks from names such as Hockney, Warhol and Lowry. Clarendon is also the exclusive gallery partner for Salvador Dali’s bronze sculpture in the UK.

While the team makes no secret of the fact that many of these works are potential investment pieces, they view this as just one of the elements that makes art a valuable asset. As Gallery Director Kerrie-Ann Law points out, “Our intention is to connect collectors with the right piece for them, although the calibre of the artists we represent and the quality of the portfolio means that much of the work will appreciate in price.”

The team at Beaconsfield are always delighted to meet new faces and first time buyers. They offer a warm welcome to those who have never visited an art gallery but are curious to know more. As owner and CEO Helen Swaby says: “We value the experience of our customers above everything. Our art consultants believe passionately in the joy of collecting and we love nothing more than sharing that passion with others.”

WATFORD FC CENTENARY ALE

Tring Brewery have teamed up with Watford FC to brew a commemorative ale, marking 100 years of the Golden Boys at Vicarage Road Stadium.

Retired Premier League star and Watford FC legend Tommy Smith was in attendance on brew day and was much satisfied with the beer once it had been packaged following the fermentation period.

Jared Ward, PR at Tring Brewery said: “It has been a pleasure to collaborate with one of Hertfordshire’s most recognised institutes. As a local employer, the Tring Brewery team is made up of many Watford fans who have followed the club’s amazing story over the decades. The Vic is synonymous with Watford and we are thrilled to brew an ale for this momentous occasion!”

Kevin Newman, Head of Retail at Watford FC remarks: “When we were looking to create a beer to celebrate the centenary of Vicarage Road, Tring were the obvious choice, as a Hertfordshire based brewery with a reputation for great ales.

The team at Tring have been wonderful partners in the project, involving the club in every step of the process, from brewing and tasting, to bottle design and marketing.

As the first beer Watford Football Club have put their name to since the FA Cup Final Commemorative Ale in 1984, it was important that the beer not only looked great but tasted fantastic too.

Having now sampled a bottle or two I can safely say that this will not only serve to be a great piece of memorabilia but will be a beer that fans will keep coming back for.”

Centenary Ale is released as part of Watford FC’s celebrations to mark 100 years of football played at Vicarage Road Stadium, having taken to the pitch for the first time on August 30th 1922.

Buckinghamshire charities celebrate share of £1million fund

Three charities based in Buckinghamshire have received donations of £1,000 each as part of the Benefact Group’s Movement for Good Awards.

For the fourth year running, the Benefact Group is giving away £1million to charities through its Movement for Good awards. Members of the public were invited to nominate causes close to their hearts, with another 250 awards of £1,000 available now for donation.

Milton Keynes Bridgebuilder Trust, Animal Antiks and Lindengate are the local charities set to benefit from the money, following overwhelming public support in the county. More than 3,000 kind-hearted residents have voted for charities across the county so far.

In total, more than 202,000 people around the UK supported the Movement for Good awards, with over 3,900 charitable causes up and down the country receiving votes. The 250 winning charities were picked at random from those nominated, following 250 previous winners being selected in June.

It’s quick and easy to nominate, you can vote for your favourite charity online at: www.movementforgood.com

Thanking supporters in Buckinghamshire, Mark Hews, Group Chief Executive of Benefact Group, said: “We would like to thank every single person who took the time to nominate a good cause as part of our Movement for Good Awards. Benefact Group is the fourth largest corporate donor in the UK and has an ambition to be the biggest. Owned by a charity, all of its available profits go to good causes, and the more the group grows, the more the group can give. As a company whose purpose is to contribute to the greater good of society, charitable giving is at the heart of what we do. We know that £1,000 can make a huge difference to the incredible work that charities do and we’re looking forward to seeing how this financial boost will change lives for the better.”

A further 120 £1,000 grants will be given away in December and £500,000 will also be given in larger grants later this year. For more information about the awards visit www.movementforgood.com Movement for Good is funded by EIO plc, part of the Benefact Group.

Beautiful Bucks

This autumn Discover Bucks Museum in Aylesbury is celebrating the Buckinghamshire countryside with a new art exhibition called Beautiful Bucks which runs until the 5th November.

Beautiful Bucks features work by one of the county’s best-known landscape artists, Brian Bennett, who demonstrates an intimate knowledge of our local landscape. Brian Bennett, now in his 95th year, was born in Olney, Bucks and has devoted much of his life to painting scenes in the Chilterns. His oil paintings capture his love of the landscape through the changing seasons and the wildflowers and plants which make such a contribution to its beauty. He was Head of Art at Berkhamsted School for 30 years until, in 1987, he was elected President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Around 30 of Brian Bennett’s works will be on display and these will be for sale.

To accompany Brian Bennett’s paintings, there will be a selection of landscapes from the museum’s collection from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, including work by John Piper and John Nash.

Visitors to the exhibition will be able to share their own favourite ‘Beautiful Bucks’ places and also make a personal pledge to keep Bucks beautiful. This could be things like pledging to pick up litter, planting a tree, or cutting pollution by reducing car travel.

There will also be activities in the exhibition for children to enjoy whilst looking at the pictures.

Beautiful Bucks runs until the 5 November 2022. Entry is included in the admission price for the museum. For more information please visit discoverbucksmuseum.org

( UN) MARRIED WITH CHILDREN?

For the first time since records began, the number of babies born to mothers who are unmarried or not in a civil partnership, has overtaken the number born to mothers in such relationships.

While birth mothers automatically have parental responsibility of their child, their unmarried partners do not.  Parental responsibility involves the right to make decisions about matters such as their child’s education, religion, medical treatment and name.

B P Collins’ family and wills, trust and probate teams offer key advice around parental responsibility when you’re not married or in a civil partnership; and how to best protect your child should anything happen to you.

Obtaining parental responsibility

If you wish to obtain parental responsibility, you will have to either jointly register the birth with the birth mother and be named on the birth certificate; enter into a parental responsibility agreement with the mother or, where that cannot be agreed, obtain it by a court order.

We urge parents to reach an agreement without involving the courts, primarily because it is always in a child’s best interests to have parents who are in agreement about all issues involving their children, no matter what the status of their relationship might be.

If parents are unable to talk directly then we would suggest working with a mediator or relationship counsellor, who can facilitate that agreement.  If, however, this isn’t possible then a court application may need to be filed, the first stage of which would be an initial conciliation meeting aimed at helping parents reach an agreement. There is a presumption that a court should not impose a solution unless there really is no other choice.

Financial obligations for unmarried parents

Where children have lived with both parents who subsequently separate, they are likely to continue to have homes with both parents, although probably spending more time with one parent.

Both parents have responsibility for the provision of a home and to support their child, however one parent may need to make direct payments to the other for their child.  You may find mediation helpful or want to make use of the range of counselling services available to help you through what is often a very difficult time. Once you have reached an agreement, you could consider seeking a consent order from

the court confirming that. We can assist with this application which can help to ensure that both parties stick to the agreement in the future.

Inheritance rights for children born outside of marriage or a civil partnership

Under the English law of intestacy - where someone dies without leaving a Will - biological and adopted children are treated in the same way irrespective of their parents’ marital or civil partnership status.  However, making a Will enables you to control who your property and assets pass to and when, and appoint guardians for minor children of whom you have parental responsibility. You may also be able to minimise the inheritance tax due from your estate. We can discuss the options available to you.

Even if my name isn’t on the property deeds do I have any rights?

Where an individual is not named on the title register to a property but has paid towards the purchase price, mortgage or renovation costs together with their partner who is the registered owner, does that individual have any property rights? Sangita Manek, Property Litigation lawyer at Blaser Mills LLP, gives her expert opinion.

The short answer is yes, you may well have rights. Where property is held in the name of one party only, that person is known as the ‘legal owner’ and also presumed to be the owner of the entire “beneficial” interest as well. The difference between legal and beneficial owners is as follows:

Legal owners are those individuals named on the title deeds of the property. If the property is registered, this person will be the person named as the owner of the property at the Land Registry.

Beneficial owners are those individuals who are the true owners of the property and the persons entitled to the economic benefit in the property.

Usually, the legal owners are also the beneficial owners. However, sometimes, a person entitled to the economic

benefit of the property is not registered on the title deed. For example, one person may have difficulties gaining a mortgage or not have enough evidence of an income to allow them to get a mortgage.

Cohabitants and/or co-occupiers of a property often fail to formalise the extent of their respective beneficial interests in a shared home. This can create significant uncertainty for a non-owner, particularly if the relationship subsequently breaks down or a creditor is seeking to repossess a legal owner’s property either under bankruptcy or pursuant to a judgment obtained at court.

In order to establish a beneficial interest in a property, a cohabitant may be able to assert his or her interest by showing that there was some kind of implied trust in place. These trusts are often known as ‘resulting’ or ‘constructive’ trusts. There is also a concept known as “proprietary estoppel”

What are Resulting Trusts?

This is where a person contributes to the purchase price of a property without being a party to the Conveyance/transfer (unless, of course, that money was given by way of a gift). Ordinarily, the financial contribution would need to have been made at the time of purchase, but in some cases, a court will accept later contributions if they were contemplated at the time that the property was acquired. If a party can show that they contributed to the purchase price of a property and that payment was not a gift, it is assumed that they have a beneficial interest in the property by way of a resulting trust. These types of payments would normally be quite substantial.

What are Constructive Trusts?

A constructive trust can arise where there is some sort of express or implied agreement, arrangement or understanding (also known as a ‘common intention’) that the beneficial ownership of the property should be

shared, and there is some form of relevant conduct on the part of the non-owner to support this. Where the constructive trust is based on an express agreement, that agreement, however imperfectly remembered and however imprecise, must generally arise prior to the acquisition of the property (although in some cases a later date will be accepted) and relate to the shared ownership of the property as opposed to an agreement about the occupation of the property. These factors must be accompanied by some kind of detrimental reliance or significant alteration on the part of the non-owning party.

Where there is no express agreement, the court may infer an agreement from the way in which the parties conducted themselves during the course of their relationship, for example, direct contributions to the purchase price initially or subsequent contributions to mortgage instalments which are genuinely referable to a shared understanding that the paying party would have an equitable interest in the property.

Other contributions can include substantial renovations to the property, or capital improvements (such as a new kitchen, bathroom or extension works) that would not ordinarily be expected from a non-owner or someone who was simply occupying the property. Mere DIY or general housework will not be enough to establish a beneficial interest in a property.

What is Proprietary Estoppel?

“Proprietary estoppel” is another means by which property rights can be asserted. Proprietary estoppel arises where a court takes the value that the assertion of strict legal rights is found to be unconscionable. It arises most commonly where a property owner encourages another to act to their detriment in the belief that they will obtain an interest in the property. If you seek to rely on proprietary estoppel, you must establish the following:

• Assur ance. The proper ty owner induces, encourages or allows you to believe that you have or will have some right or benefit over the property.

• Detr imental reliance. In relying upon the assurance given, you act to your detriment to the knowledge of the property owner.

• Unconscionability The proper ty owner tries to take unconscionable advantage of you by denying you your rights in the property.

What if I am able to establish a beneficial trust?

If you can prove to the court that you have a beneficial interest in a property, the court will then consider the value of the beneficial interest. For Resulting Trusts, the size of the interest will be in proportion to the extent of the contribution made. For Constructive Trusts, if there was an express agreement, the size of the interest will be in line with that agreement or calculated on the basis of a ‘broad brush’ assessment having regard to all the circumstances. Where there wasn’t an express agreement, the size of the interest will be calculated following an assessment of the parties’ ‘whole course of dealing’. If you establish a claim based on proprietary estoppel, the court has a wide discretion on determining the extent of your claim.

Any claim for a beneficial interest in a property, whether by a resulting or a constructive trust (or proprietary estoppel) needs to be made under the Trust of Lands and Appointment of Trustees Act 1996.

If you would like specific advice, or would like to discuss a possible claim, please do not hesitate to contact Sangita Manek on sam@blasermills.co.uk or call on 01494 770980.

4. Himalayan salt aged beef

The Farm Shop Fulmer’s butcher’s counter boasts a Himalayan salt wall and is one of the only butchers in Buckinghamshire to have this feature. All of the red meat hangs and cures for up to 60 days, where the Himalayan salt is used to purify the air in the chill room. This creates the perfect environment to really bring the flavour out of the meat. Using the dry ageing process, the moisture is drawn out of the meat, creating an intensely deep and rich flavour. This also ensures that the texture is tender and succulent.

5. Shellfish specials at the fish counter

October recipe & kitchen news

October is a time to celebrate the English apple season. This year sees a bumper crop down to the warm ripening sunshine of our summer. We are fortunate in the UK to have an abundance of delicious variety’s with so many culinary uses. This month I have chosen a cake close to my own heart, my late mother always had a good store of this wonderful cake and myself and two brothers adored it, traditionally served warm with a healthy dollop of Dorset clotted cream You will often see it

as a tearoom staple in the West Country. We serve a refined version at the restaurant using apples from our friend’s orchard in nearby Sarratt, we use the dual-purpose Lord Lambourne apple and serve it with a purée of Tom Putt apples, but you can experiment with different varieties just ensure you make use of the best English apples you can find. Of course, warming custard or vanilla ice cream sit beautifully with this cake and nothing is better than curling up on the couch after a long lazy Sunday lunch with a bowl of this classic, enjoy.

At Minerva's Virtual Academy, we provide a world-class education for children aged 12 - 18 who thrive when things are done differently. We teach young athletes who can't attend physical school, children who prefer home instead of the classroom, those who want less distractions or need extra help, and those who are on the move. We're a diverse bunch and we love it. You can join us at any time of the year.

The Benefits of Online Schooling vs Traditional School

Minerva’s Virtual Academy is a unique, online independent school for pupils aged 12 - 18. Pupils study the British Curriculum from the comfort and safety of their own home, wherever they live in the world, receiving an affordable, world-class education to rival traditional school for the first time. The school enables its pupils to thrive academically, make friends online and off, and helps them develop the skills needed to succeed in the modern world. Pupils choose from 20 subjects at GCSE and A Level. Personal mentors support each child outside lesson hours. A dynamic weekly timetable includes live lessons, virtual assemblies, after school clubs, wellbeing sessions, and an exciting co-curricular learning programme called “World Changers” that tackles the most urgent issues of the day. Minerva’s Virtual Academy is run by Headmaster Lawrence Tubb, who taught at Wycombe Abbey for nine years, and is supported by a team of outstanding teachers and mentors who’ve come together to re-define what’s possible for school-age children in the 21st century.

•Pupils can receive a world class education at home, anywhere in the world

•Pupils can study at speeds that suit them - they are no longer held back or silenced by the class majority

•Anxious pupils can gain confidence by leaving the pressure of the traditional school behind them

•Pupils receive higher quality one-to-one attention via personal mentors

•Parents are closer to their children on a daily

basis, helping to create strong family bonds

‘We think the pandemic has been an opportunity for us to reflect on what is important and we are getting very comfortable with the fact that there are many paths to success for children and that traditional school does not always bring out the best in every child. Overall, Minerva has been a life-saver for all of us. It has been a great experience and it has brought out the best in our daughter.’

ESSENTIAL AUTUMN/ WINTER BEAUTY TRENDS

Katie Wright looks ahead to the hair and make-up looks that will rule the season.

As well as delivering high fashion looks that will become must-haves, every season the catwalk collections bring us a bounty of beauty inspiration.

There’s usually a mix of understated and avantgarde, and the AW22 runways were no exception – with retro-inspired hair, sparkling adornments and classic looks given a new lease of life.

As we head into autumn/winter and prepare to refresh our wardrobes, these are the backstage beauty trends set to dominate the season…

Red lips revamped

In recent years, make-up artists have moved away from onesize-fits-all trends to a more tailored approach, and this season it’s up to you how to rock a red lip.

Designers like Molly Goddard, Tory Burch and Feben made the case for cooltoned matte textures.

At Miu Miu and Sportmax, scarlet gloss was the order of the day, while models at Vivienne Westwood were somewhere in between with satinfinish pouts.

Hair bands

There’s only one way to top off your look this season, and that’s with a headband. From Nineties-style zigzag comb bands at David Koma and skinny, sporty styles at Roksanda, to thick, brightly coloured Alice bands at Eudon Choi and beaded crowns at Zimmerman, these accessories will elevate any outfit.

Party punk

Going-out glam was a major inspiration backstage, with sexy, smoky, dramatic black eye looks popular from New York to Paris.

There were XXL

272 OCTOBER 2022

FASHION, HEALTH & BEAUTY 68 OCTOBER 2022

feline flicks at Jason Wu and Roberto Cavalli, lashings of smudgy kohl at Bora Aksu and Saint Laurent, with a focus on a punky aesthetic rather than precision.

Nineties hair

While fashion can’t get enough of the Noughties, hair stylists are still obsessed with the 1990s – the decade of minimalism.

We saw Nineties inspiration in the slickedback locks at Nensi Dojaka, the damp bobs at Giambattista Valli and the spiky chignons at Preen.

Highlighter eyes

Splashes of colour came by way of acidic eyeshadows – highlighter yellow and lime green at Mark Fast, fuchsia wings at Valentino and vivid violet at Saint Laurent.

How can you make this look work for winter? Team cream eye colours with a clean, matte base and a nude lip –so the eyes really pop.

Bleached brows

Lila Moss (daughter of legendary catwalker Kate)

closed the Richard Quinn show in an all-white bridal look, her angelic appearance heightened with bleached brows.

One of the season’s more daring trends – also seen at Preen, Versace and Burberry – peroxide blonde brows aren’t for everyone, but they certainly help accentuate a smoky eye look.

Face jewellery

A sprinkling of sparkle isn’t uncommon on the autumn/winter catwalks (’tis the season, after all) but this time around we saw metallic makeup taken to the next level with full-on face jewellery.

Pairs of gems were dotted on cheeks at foreheads at Givenchy, eyes were encrusted with crystals at Simone Rocha and bespoke bejewelled designs at Burberry even included the brand’s logo.

To take the look from runway to real life, try a smattering of stick-on jewels for your party season eye look.

Solid to the core

In my practice, function is as important as form when it comes to the body. As we age many subtle changes occur which, overtime, can lead to quite dramatic differences in both appearance and lifestyle.

Loss of muscle tone, called muscle atrophy, starts from around age thirty and can lead to general muscle weakness as well as reduced mobility. Of particular importance is core strength which is needed for everyday acts like sitting, standing, or tying your shoes. A weak core can also affect your back causing pain and for which some opt for pain medication instead of addressing the underlying issue.

Preventing fall related injuries

Core strength is important for day-to-day movement, but also helps your balance and general stability which can lessen the risk of falling. A strong core is not only important for general wellbeing but will help to prevent injuries such as bruises, sprains, hip fractures, or head trauma.

Post-pregnancy issues

Around two thirds of women postpartum will suffer from some degree of diastasis recti which is a separation of the abdominal muscles. This is a completely natural and occurs during the gestational period of pregnancy and in response to a mother’s change in hormone levels. While for some women diastasis recti does resolve naturally, age at the time of becoming pregnant, as well as muscle tone prior to pregnancy, does have an impact on how well the body recovers.

Building your core

When it comes to muscle atrophy it is best to undertake regular exercise, including weight training with free weights, will help you to maintain muscle tone while also increasing bone density. If you have not been in the habit of exercising, then it is advisable to first check with your doctor.

In my clinic

For my patients looking to regain muscle tone and target certain muscle groups, I offer Emsculpt NEO. This device is designed specifically to build

muscles fast and can be used for injury recovery or alongside a programme of regular exercise for general wellbeing. In one 30-minute session the Emsculpt causes the muscles to contract as many as 20,000 times meaning the intensity of the workout is hard to replicate naturally. Emsculpt can be sued to target the abs to improve core strength but is also used on other major muscles such as the buttocks, calves, thighs, and arms. Emsculpt is delivered over a course of six sessions and the treatment is ideal for those looking to kickstart their fitness or for those who are wanting to address issues of core instability or diastasis recti.

HOW TO OVERCOME TRAUMA

Are you struggling to overcome a traumatic event?

Do you feel that trauma, past or present, is having a negative impact on you and your life? Kate Kirrane from Seed Wellness tells us more.

We asked 3 of our experts at Seed how they help their clients overcome trauma in mind, body and soul.

Clinical Psychology

Said Dr Anouk Houdijk, Seed’s Clinical Psychologist and specialist in Trauma Therapy, “Most of us go through life having experiences that we find traumatic. We could be dealing with one traumatic event or numerous events, that may be recent or as far back as childhood.”

1. If you are living in a traumatised state, you don’t have to live this way. This is treatable. Don’t try and manage it on your own. Seek professional help.

2. Work to regulate your nervous system to bring your body and mind back into balance. Go to a yoga class, try mindfulness, get out every day for a walk.

3. Begin to reclaim the things that trauma has removed from your life. Get support to help you start to see people you haven’t seen or go to places you haven’t been to as a result of the traumatic experience.

Craniosacral Therapy

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle bodywork that works deeply and profoundly with the whole person. People who seek out Craniosacral Therapy are often experiencing chronic pain, and / or stress and anxiety.

Said Sam Lowi, Seed’s Craniosacral Therapist, “During the treatment process it often becomes apparent that these are the result of a past trauma, accident, injury or surgery.

1. We all react to trauma in different ways - some people may find parts of themselves numb and

frozen where others have over-activated nervous systems. Craniosacral therapy works deeply and profoundly with the whole nervous system, enabling us to feel safe again within our own bodies.

2. As we navigate life’s challenges, tension builds up in the body. Trauma can also manifest as physical tension. Craniosacral Therapy enables our bodies to unwind and release this tension it is holding. 3. Craniosacral Therapy supports us to come into balance and to enhance our bodies’ natural and inherent healing processes.

Reiki

Reiki is based on a hands-on healing technique that uses energy to promote healing, reduce stress and boost relaxation. Said Seed’s Reiki Master, Bansree Takodra, “Reiki provides a great aid to alleviate the impact of trauma.”

1. Reiki eases the body and mind into a place of deep rest.

2. This helps to soothe anxiety, sadness and ‘wired’ thinking, which are often symptoms of the trauma response.

3. It also helps us to release attachment to the traumatic event.

TISKA Karate

THE ULTIMATE SELF DEFENCE NEW CLUB OPENING IN AMERSHAM

TISKA (Traditional International Shotokan Karate Association) heads up clubs both nationally and internationally and was established nearly 30 years ago by Gursharan Sahota, the Chief Instructor (8th Dan) and founder.

Karate is the ultimate in self-defence, promoting fitness, self-awareness, confidence, etiquette, respect and self-discipline. Students at TISKA start from the age of 4 years old and up. It is a very family based club and many families train together. Recently TISKA proudly announced their youngest Black belt – who has trained consistently with his family and attained his Black belt at the age of just 8. TISKA is delighted to now announce the opening of their new Amersham club based at The Chiltern Lifestyle Centre. A desire from students to have a club at Amersham led to Shihan Sahota now giving students the opportunity to train at the newly built facility.

Karate for children can help with bullying issues, exam stress and the building of self-esteem. It can also help children develop their concentration and focus. Many parents notice a marked improvement of concentration in their children once karate training has commenced.

Karate for adults can help with general fitness and wellbeing and, with regular training, strength and flexibility will improve.

For both children and adults alike, belonging to an association such as TISKA offers many fun moments and opens up new social avenues for all our students encouraging many new friendships. Students are

taught from the outset that Shotokan karate is primarily a defensive not offensive martial art meaning students learn how to be polite, respecting their fellow students, instructor and others.

Early lessons include the basis of karate. Everything begins and ends with a bow. From the moment you enter the Dojo students bow to Shihan and upon leaving the Dojo again bow as a sign of respect. You are taught how to correctly and safely form a fist, your first basis punches, correct stances, basic blocks and kicks. TISKA have also produced a free Beginners app available to download to support all beginners in a step by step format from complete beginner through to their first Blue belt grading.

HOUSE & GARDEN

– Keep it local for everything house and home –
IMAGE: CHAPLINS

The fitted furniture files

What the design world is coming to realise more than ever recently, is that what defines a home, is you. The people living in it. The modern home is focusing on expressing the personalities within it through decoration and design. This could be by displaying meaningful, memory-filled objects, by planning a room around a treasured work of art or by more actively placing the needs and preferences of a house’s occupants at the core of how it looks and functions. Houses are becoming as unique as the people within them, telling their stories and revealing their personalities.

That’s where fitted furniture comes in, pieces of practical storage created precisely for the space you need them in.

Think of fitted furniture and what first comes to mind may not be hugely inspiring. We’re here to prove you wrong. It’s an art form, not only designed to fit specifically into the space you need it in, but – yes – beautiful, creative, expressive as well as the very definition of useful.

There’s something incredibly satisfying about a bespoke piece that slides perfectly into place. Perhaps there’s an element of ASMR to it: look at how it lines up so perfectly with the ceiling. See how it fits so smoothly into that alcove. Watch how it skirts around the bumps in the wall. Feel how smoothly those doors glide open. Oooo.

Fitted furniture is about making the most of every centimetre. About stretching up high, adding an extra shelf, making room for more pairs of shoes or finally creating somewhere to house

that LP collection. It makes life easier and rooms smarter.

Chaplins’ range of beautiful, designer fitted furniture is ready and waiting to be crafted into shape around you, your home and those objects that you most care about, whatever they may be. The in-house fitted furniture expert Denis Barclay knows every trick in the fitted furniture book: here he talks through everything you need to know to ready your room for a bespoke storage piece.

How can Chaplins help with fitted furniture?

We offer a complete design and installation service. In the first instance, you are invited into our showroom to browse the options – during this initial meeting, we discuss the space you are considering and how you want to use the area, as well as any ideas you have and designs you like so we can make suggestions to better meet your brief. We then work from your plans or visit your home, depending on the stage of the project. It’s also important to establish the budget.

What falls under the category of ‘fitted furniture’? It’s more than wardrobes, right?

Over the 35 years, I have been involved with the furniture business, there are not many spaces that I have not planned fitted furniture for, inside or outside, be it under the stairs, boot rooms, TV rooms, studies, libraries, bedrooms, dressing rooms and craft workshops. Modular furniture is very

HOUSE & GARDEN 80 OCTOBER 2022

adaptable. It’s only limited by the imagination, and of course the budget.

Which designer brands offer fitted furniture?

We work with premium Italian brands Lema, Molteni&C and Porro, and heritage German company Interlübke. They are modern and sleek, with finishes ranging from matt and high gloss lacquers to glass, metals, ceramics and veneers. There’s a lot to choose from.

Our Lema wardrobe studio showcases different styles of wardrobe in a range of finishes. We also have a door bar showing a small format selection of doors options.

What do I need to know before my fitted furniture consultation? Do I need to get out the tape measure?

The more information you can bring, then the more meaningful the initial meeting will be. Generally, we ask customers to have photos of the space, or architect’s plans if it’s under construction. It’s also helpful to really consider your storage requirements so that we can make best use of the space available.

What’s the timeline between consultation to installation?

After the first discussion, we’ll produce an initial plan and costing, then the process develops from there. In some instances, it can be very quick, while larger projects can take months. Then of course it takes 10-12 weeks for the furniture to be made and

delivered from the factory. Installation is quick – it usually takes a day for a conventional room, to a week or more on a larger project.

WHAT’S THE FIRST STEP?

DO I NEED TO COME INTO THE SHOWROOM? WHO DO I TALK TO?

Call us or email us at sales@chaplins.co.uk and we’ll discuss the best way to get started.

For more ideas on bespoke designer storage, see chaplins.co.uk, or book an appointment to visit the 25,000 sq ft luxury lifestyle showroom in Hatch End where you’ll find the latest shelves, doors and finishes under one roof.

Making Homes Feel As They Should

Based in Chalfont St Peter village, Floors At Fourteen is home to some of the most beautiful and luxurious flooring textures, offering a slightly different concept versus an original flooring retailer

Owner and Entrepreneur Jessica provides design and colour led assistance from small to larger scale projects. Working with her clients on their themes, selected paint colours, fabrics and other interior ideas, she amalgamates the requirements of the customer as well as considering practical points of view for the areas to be considered. Jessica understands the need for longevity and quality to be at the top of the list when purchasing flooring for your home, and as an independent flooring retailer, they are members of a large buying group benefiting from competitive prices whilst still providing a bespoke and luxury service.

Discussing the latest 2022 trends, Jessica explains her thoughts on the most popular colour choices for 2022, “Over the last year or so, I’m finding that the new go-to shade is what I like to call ‘greige’. A combination of cool and warm, somewhere that sits in the middle between grey and beige to become the new standard of neutral. A great colour that can be achieved in most flooring qualities across LVT, carpets and wood. Most people want a versatile colour that works across a variety of rooms, and over the years you can adapt these areas with furnishings, picture frames, quirky ornaments, even when seasonal holiday decorations come out.”

This year Jessica won Business Woman of the Year Silver award as well as Young Business Entrepreneur of the Year at the SME Bucks/Milton Keynes Business Awards 2022, and alongside her fabulous fitting teams and in-showroom Assistant, they have completed some of the most beautiful projects since establishing in 2019. Looking forward to the next stage in development for Floors At Fourteen, Jessica is moving to sustainability in her industry, “There are many ways the flooring industry can be more considerate of the environment and adopt sustainable practices. We are striving to reduce our carbon footprint and the impact our role has on the ecosystem, this is our goal for the next few years”

Origin Indoor Pools - Top Considerations

So, you’ve decided on an indoor swimming pool, what now? There are many decisions to be made along the way, attention to detail and precise planning are crucial when designing a successful swimming pool and pool house.

For anyone wanting to begin the process, here are the answers to key questions to help with the decision-making:

Are you interested in a stand-alone indoor pool house or a pool house extension to your home?

This is the biggest decision you’ll need to make when it comes to your indoor swimming pool as placement and location play a crucial role in the

success of a project. There are advantages and disadvantages to both options. You’ll need to think about the main use for the swimming pool, do you want a place to escape away from the home or do you want it attached to your home? Will it play a big part in your daily routine? Do you have a budget you’re working towards?

Will you need planning permission?

For a stand-alone pool house, one that is freestanding and complies with the permitted development design criteria, it’s likely you won’t need planning permission. However, a pool house extension to your home will need planning permission. Origin has a wealth of experience in gaining planning approval for indoor pools and

they also manage the whole process for you so, no need to panic!

Do you start with an architect?

No, Origin does it all. They provide initial design sketches and budgetary proposals free of charge in their feasibility studies. Architects are extremely well versed with domestic construction details, but unfortunately, an indoor pool is very different. An architect can provide an outline design for an indoor pool but this may be an unnecessary expense as many don’t have the knowledge or insurance needed to take that design further.

Which features have the biggest impact on cost?

The most popular size for an indoor pool is between 8m to 12m as the bigger the pool, the bigger the cost. For avid swimmers, there are some

excellent counter current swim devices available making the size of the pool less important. Buying a pool cover is one of the bigger investments you’ll make throughout the process but they’re worth it as an important part of the pool design. They retain heat, reduce running costs and provide a level of safety, making them a necessity rather than an option. When adding different features to your indoor swimming pool, it’s important to remember your original motivation. Did you want to create a place of relaxation? Your own fitness centre? A social hub for friends and family?

Why Origin?

It’s simple, Origin does it all. Building pools is a specialised field, it’s unlike any other building project and requires a holistic approach with all the key elements working together from the beginning. Origin has all the design and engineering expertise necessary and manages the whole building process for you, from initial concept, planning and design to completion and beyond, eliminating the need for you to employ separate companies. Access to a pool right on your doorstep means it’s easy to swim every day in the privacy of your own home, either to maintain a healthy lifestyle or simply as a space to relax. Origin has been building award-winning swimming pools for over 40 years and in that time has successfully completed thousands of pools and pool houses to a wide range of specifications. Whether you’re looking for indoor or outdoor, wellness or fun, Origin has experienced it all and is available to help you create your home pool managing every stage from start to finish, giving you the confidence and freedom to enjoy finally swimming in your own home.

A place for everything, and everything in it’s place!

Requiring an open plan kitchen, dining and sitting area to include a bar and separate breakfast cabinet to be hidden from view - could be seen as an unreasonable request when approaching a kitchen company, but that’s just what this client asked for … and just what they got!

Silver Ash as well as Champagne Aluminium +Segmento door fronts and Quartz ‘Blanco Zeus’ polished counter-tops were used in the main kitchen space, creating a light and modern aesthetic. As with all Poggenpohl kitchens, the room is finished to an exacting standard. Here, a combination of toughened Bronze mirror glass and book-matched stone splashbacks in Calacatta Neolith were used. SubZero & Wolf appliances complete the design - offering a professional look and ensuring that any budding chefs have the facilities they need to create gastronomic masterpieces.

The client, having already purchased the kitchen, opted to allow Poggenpohl to design their games room and bar area. Taking inspiration from a previous Poggenpohl project with a similar end use, the client requested a darker colour scheme and undercounter cooling appliances – and left the rest to us.  The lighting is all operated via remote, for complete control over the brightness and colour warmth of the shelves as well as overhead. Poggenpohl also helped to specify the bar optics ensuring that everything works together.

THE DETAILS

Poggenpohl

Studios can be found at 75 High St, Marlow, and 100 London Rd, St Albans.

There are 17 showrooms selling Poggenpohl in the UK. To find your nearest, visit www.poggenpohl.com

Overall, the client had a strong vision of the appliance brands and functions they wanted, but then allowed much of the design work and colour specification to be created by the design team.  As a result, they - and the team at Poggenpohl - are really pleased with the result.

This kitchen also included +Stage cabinetry (pocket doors) to hide the breakfast area during gatherings, as well as the use of book-matching to the Neolith ceramic splashbacks.  The warming drawers were required under the hob as the client often uses these throughout the cooking process.  Many of the drawer accessories were custom designed for the clients’ specific utensils and spice jars – they planned every last detail with us, down to where the gravy jars would be stored - A place for everything, and everything in it’s place!

Not shown in these images was the bespoke utility area, which featured laundry appliances, a large sink with spray rinse tap and even a bespoke drying cupboard! It was a pleasure to work for such lovely clients, and we all hope they enjoy their dream kitchen.

STARTING AN INTERIOR DESIGN PROJECT THE RIGHT WAY

Starting an interior design project can be incredibly daunting!

If you’ve never done any significant redecorating before, it may be hard to know where to start, plus with interior design, there’s often a fine line between nailing it and failing it. Here’s how to avoid a décor disaster and make sure that you come in on budget.

Create a Mood Board

A great place to start is by collecting tear sheets from magazines or by using an online app such as Pinterest or Houzz. Whether it’s digital on your iPad or on a pin board in the study, it’s really helpful to collate ideas to help to visualize how your ideas will come together, and if you’re considering using a professional to help you, this is a great way to communicate your brief.

Consider Hiring an Interior Designer

Not all Interior Designers are frighteningly expensive. A good interior designer can help you with everything from choosing colour schemes and sourcing materials and furniture saving you hours trawling around and often source the best items for your space and budget. Having done endless

projects like yours, their expertise on space layout and lighting design can be invaluable to tap into. They will not only help you to visualise the end result but they can often help to make it happen for you handling the tradespeople and coordinating deliveries for you too.

Located on Berkhamsted’s High Street, Rebecca Clark Interiors take a uniquely personal approach to Interior Design. Offering an entirely free of charge Interior Design service, there are no fees for the design work or for tapping into the teams extensive expertise. Their priority is to use the clients’ budget on beautiful furnishings and finishes they curate for you from their portfolio of luxury suppliers, rather than spending the budget on expensive design fees.

Rebecca works closely and collaboratively with clients to create a home that feels like the best version of their taste and way of living. Updating a home is a deeply personal project and one that she always feels honoured to be a part of.

Beautiful birds

North Yorkshire, UK - North & Nether’s newest wallpaper collection, Caged Bird, has been unveiled today. The sixth collection in the brand’s catalogue, Caged Bird features vintage bird illustrations with a trademark North & Nether twist.

According to Megan Slack at Homes & Gardens, bird motifs are trending because they represent freedom, optimism, and the ability to escape.

In addition to bird motifs, biophilic designs have featured on Real Homes roundup of wallpaper trends - and of course maximalist patterns are everywhere. The Caged Bird collection takes inspiration from these trends and reimagines them with birds in captivity, including elements both vintage and modern.

Four of the designs in the collection feature a different species of bird in a cage - either real or metaphorical. Magpie and Pigeon are more traditional patterns, while Rifle and Roller have more modern lines.

Magpie has the namesake bird flying amid irises, seemingly aware of the mesh cage which surrounds them. Look closely in Pigeon, and you will see leg bands on a few of the birds.

Rifle has a vibrant teal background with a modern gate illustration - with other flora and fauna around, the birds look to find freedom.

Roller is a linear barbed wire print with the bird guarding its eggs.

Feather, a supporting pattern, is a dense motif

of abstract feathers in the collection’s signature teal colour.

Teal is the focal point of the collection - a timeless colour which, according to colour psychology expert Karen Haller on The Design Sheppard, evokes feelings of tranquillity, calm, peace, and balance - a direct contrast to the feelings of being held captive.

Mara Nieuwsma, Managing Director, comments on her colour choices: “I was drawn to the vivid teal feathers of the rifle and roller, and wanted to carry this hue through the collection, balanced with black, greys and beiges to make the designs more versatile. The cages arrived naturally through the creative process, in a desire to add something unexpected to a familiar motif.” northandnether.com

Ideas to create a naturally cosy home this winter

The cost of living crisis is looming large, and with energy bills set to soar, this winter rare-breed and natural sheepskin specialists Jord Home are here to help savvy homeowners reduce their energy bills by using warming textures to create a naturally cosy home this winter.

Every room feels cosier with a sheepskin. Jord Home hand-pick only the finest rare breed and sheepskins which are irresistibly soft and naturally warming.

Carefully selected neutral tones these special sheepskins create a relaxed, scandi-style that will make a home feel warmer this winter.

The choice of Instagram influencers and boutique hoteliers, not only are Jord Home’s natural sheepskins stunning to look at, placed over benches, chairs and sofas they instantly add comfort and warmth to seating and for a look that feels relaxed, cosy and welcoming.

Sheepskins layered over carpets or flooring add softness underfoot and keep the cold from creeping in. And there’s no need to just have one, mixing textures and colours creates interest and extra warmth.

And unlike synthetic sheepskins found on the

high street, Jord Home’s sheepskins are strokeably soft, naturally warm and ethically sourced.

Available in various sizes and natural shades

Thick, lustrous and naturally warm, Jord Home’s sustainable sourced Reindeer hides are the ultimate in cosy interior decor. Snuggle up to them on the sofa or lay them over bed linen for a timeless Nordic aesthetic that will keep the cold at bay.

Used for centuries to keep homes warm, a well chosen rug will instantly transform the feel of a room from cool to cosy.

Jord Home’s natural rugs are handwoven on a traditional wooden loom, using a centuries-old weaving practice and because they are a flat weave, they are double-sided so you can turn the rugs for longevity - making them a great investment for keeping homes cosier.

Versatile and ideal for extra layering when the temperatures fall, a home can never have too many blankets. Jord Home’s pure merino wool blankets are woven in one of the UK’s last remaining heritage mills. Woven in British wool they are naturally warm to the touch and long-lasting. Snuggle up under them now for warmth, then use them for picnics come summer.

A Harvest Festival

Celebrating the start of autumn

shift from summer to autumn in your living room.

Pile on a plush selection of cosy cushions, throw a sheepskin over your favourite chair and opt for accents in tones of burnt orange, rusty reds and soothing oatmeals. It’s time to get your hygge on!

A TIME OF THANKSGIVING

Nothing spells the changing of the seasons like a festive feast and the dining table is a perfect place to conjure this unique atmosphere. Take a leaf out of the book of our American friends and host your own Thanksgiving supper. A relaxed linen tablecloth sets the scene, while tall tapered candles bring that all-important glimmer. Choose rustic earthenware, brass cutlery and raffia table mats for a rustic effect.

FLOWER POWER

Time to pick your posy? Go for seasonal blooms like dahlias, hydrangeas and maple leaves in fiery tones. A few sprigs of greenery will also add a little freshness.

Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor, Nadia McCowan Hill, shares how to get set for the new season

Crisp morning air and the crackling of russet leaves underfoot signals that autumn is upon us and it’s time to get our ‘cosy’ on! By truly embracing seasonal changes, you can offset any feelings of flatness as summer days come to an end, and surround yourself in everything uplifting that the colder months have to offer. Think warming hues and cocooning textiles.

AMBIENT ENTRYWAY

Your wardrobe isn’t the only place to ring the changes and signal that A/W‘22 is, at last, here. Why not make over your doorway, with a seasonal wreath in russet tones, or a basket of dried foliage? Trail your seasonal picks along your garden path, leading to your door with a difference for a welcoming look.

In Ten Years. Eight Houses In Just One Small Road For Castle Glass

Many neighbours in just one small road were so impressed with our manufacturing and installation service that they referred Castle Glass to each other in a word of mouth cascade.

The referral flow started with Malcolm Clark of Aran Heights, Chalfont St Giles in August 2011. Malcolm asked Castle Glass to install our continuous Mustang gutter system together with new upvc soffits and fascias.

He was so impressed with our way of doing business and our workmanship - and his wife with the installation team’s singing - “They carried out a first class job with friendliness and humour” that he referred us to neighbour Tony O’Neill a few doors away.

Tony asked Castle Glass to install our full range of windows, doors, gutters, soffits and fascias to his house in April 2012 and was equally delighted.

“They not only checked we were completely satisfied with their work but stressed we should let them know immediately of any post-installation problems,” he said.

Tony then recommended Castle to Paul Golding, also of Aran Heights. Paul also installed a full range of doors, windows and guttering in October 2013 and praised Castle Glass to the heavens, “Castle’s work was completely faultless, the workmen were friendly and courteous”. A fourth resident of Aran Heights, David Gregory, has now also placed an order with Castle Glass having heard of us from his neighbours.

The sequence of referrals eventually came to the attention of Buckinghamshire Business First (BBF), Buckinghamshire’s biggest business organisation which campaigns on behalf of Bucks businesses to politicians and local government. Heather Martin of BBF commented “Castle Glass’s achievement in obtaining three word of mouth referrals in one small road due to their excellent service is truly impressive.”

Castle Glass has more than 38 years glazing experience so word of mouth referrals are nothing new to the firm. But, says Gerry Castle, it’s the relationships that matter.

A Natural Escape

Imagine spending your days outside enjoying the fresh air. Now picture being in a bespoke hut, built and clad in warm and characterful reclaimed timber.

The wood is 100-years-old and each batten has a unique story to tell. Instead of creating a barrier to the elements, the hut works in harmony to connect you with nature. There’s a wood-burning stove keeping you warm. Looking around you see ample room for comfortable seating, a desk, gym equipment, a drum kit or even a bar. The space can be enclosed by canvas windows, you roll them up, you stop, breathe, and take in your surroundings. You’re home and this is the Firehut experience.

Firehut was born from our love and passion for outdoor living. We built the first ever Firehut at our family home and it has become a real haven for us. We’ve used it more than we could ever have imagined. If you need a multifunctional space, but

don’t have the time or budget to expand your home, then consider installing a luxury outdoor Firehut. You won’t require planning permission and its versatile nature means the space can be used 365 days of the year. Take it from a home office during the day, to a yoga space in the afternoon, then an outdoor cinema room in the evening. Even as the temperature cools and the seasons change, you can draw down the canvas windows, light the stove and escape. Handcrafted in the UK, the Firehut features distinctive reclaimed timber on the exterior. Internally it is clad in prime salvaged century-old wood, further enhancing the characterful design. The materials are sourced from old barns we have bought and dismantled, stately homes, period properties, docks and pontoons, mooring posts, various marinas and sea fronts, lock gates, church flooring and even a disused submarine base.

Firehut can be a base to launch your start-up, or a space to practise your hobbies and hone new skills. Ideal for young families that require room for their children to safely play outside; when they grow older it becomes a den where they can be with their friends. The Firehut is perfect for big or intimate outdoor gatherings. Designed to meet the needs of all, uniquely tailored to you.
