have Yourself a stress-free

christmas t

he adverts are on TV, the lights are up, and yes the Christmas songs are playing – it’s that time again. e time for that child-like magical wonder and paradoxically, instantaneous stress. What to buy for that awkward teenage nephew, that fussy Great Aunt Floss, and your dad who just has everything... It’s a stress we all endure and dread, but luckily for you, Chorleywood Bookshop is here to help. Amazingly books are still one of the most popular gifts for under £20 and with friendly, well-informed staff who provide reliable recommendations, this is the perfect place to make your book purchases. From collector’s editions of timeless classics to fun new picture books and an amazing 24 hour order and collect service, your Christmas wish really is their command. ey are so much more than just a bookshop though, they also supply a wide range of gift ideas and are fully equipped to provide you with a present for every personality. Here is just a taste of their excellent selection of unique presents: A gift for…

the fashioNista

A beautiful range of jewellery, from striking watches to beautifully delicate bracelets. Add a bit of sparkle to that special someone’s Christmas;

the little oNes

the sportsmaN Brightly coloured, traditional wooden toys. Fight the trend of plastic dolls and electronics, and buy your little ones something they can cherish;

secret saNta Wonderfully unique golf club pens for the golfer in your family. One of those rare novelty gifts that is genuinely useful. (Why not get them a signed copy of Ian Poulter’s autobiography, No Limits to match!);

the writer

Luxurious paperblanks gold inlay notebook for the dedicated diary keeper or writer;

It’s the gift we all dread to buy… But don’t let it stress you out this year. ese comedy coasters are the perfect inexpensive present for your Secret Santa. e bookshop is also home to an impressive catalogue of signed copies for that extra personal gift. From Graham Norton’s memoir Life and Loves of a He Devil to Tanya Byron’s autobiographical insight into the life of a clinical psychologist, e Skeleton Cupboard to Jodi Picoult’s new novel, Leaving Time. ere really is something for everyone.

New Year Dates for Your DiarY Whilst it might be tempting to bury your head in wrapping paper and tinsel, and not even think about the New Year until the 1st of January, the Chorleywood Bookshop is (as always) one step ahead and is already filling up the New Year calendar with some fabulous events. is is the bookshop that brought you SJ Watson, author of internationally bestselling, Before I Go to Sleep, before it shot to success. ey are consistently firmly positioned at the forefront of new fiction and are proud to present you with two exciting authors and their brand new novels. e first event, on January 15th is with Harriet Lane, with her new psychological thriller, Her. e event is to be a book group style session and Harriet will be interviewed by local author Antonia Honeywell in a Q&A format. With compelling detail and brutal realism, Her tells the story of the two separate lives of Emma, a struggling mother who has put everything on hold, and Nina, sophisticated, independent and entirely in control. It is a fascinating portrayal of toxic friendship, the evils of envy, and simultaneously the boredom and seduction of wealth, likened strongly to Zoe Heller’s Notes

on a Scandal. Already widely praised by reviewers, Her is a tense, and gripping read filled with the sort of probing questions that makes for a great book group discussion. e second on January 26th is with debut author and Chorleywood Bookshop’s official one to watch, Anna Hope, with new World war One novel, Wake, which will also be set up as an informal book group style session. Anna Hope’s début novel, Wake is a poignant ode to the women who lived through World War One and a carefully crafted presentation of the emotional aftershock that consumed their lives. It is a portrait of three intertwining lives dealing with loss in their own way and caught at the faultline between empire and modernity, capturing the beginnings of a new era. It is uncomplicated in style whilst exploring the most complex of human emotion – a book that begs to be read and demands to be discussed. ■ For more details contact Chorleywood Bookshop on 01923 283 566

Wildlife Wonders The world-renowned Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition returns to the Natural History Museum at Tring.

T

he acclaimed Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, showcasing the rich array of life on our planet, reflecting its beauty and also highlighting its fragility, returns to the Natural History Museum at Tring to celebrate its fiftieth year. is collection of more than 100 images uniquely combines the work of talented young photographers, gifted amateurs and leading professionals, all selected for their creativity, artistry and technical complexity. Head of the Natural History Museum at Tring, Paul Kitching says, ‘I'm delighted that we are able to show the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition again here in the Natural History Museum at Tring. is exhibition is a firm favourite with our visitors and staff alike and I'm always amazed by the quality and diversity of images on display.’ Winners of the grand titles in this year’s milestone competition were announced at a prestigious awards ceremony at the Natural History Museum in London. American photographer Michael ‘Nick’ Nichols was named Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014 by a panel of international judges for his serene black-and-white image of lions resting with their cubs in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. Following the pride for nearly six months, he photographed them in infra-red, which he explains, ‘transforms the light and turns the moment into something primal, biblical almost’. Jim Brandenburg, chair of the judging panel and acclaimed wildlife photographer, said, ‘Nick’s image encapsulated so many elements that demonstrated artistic and technical skill, the sort that takes many years

of professional work to hone and craft as he has done.’ Meanwhile eight-year-old Carlos Perez Naval was awarded Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2014 for his image of a scorpion soaking up the Sun, Stinger in the Sun. e image shows the scorpion flourishing its sting as a warning to the young photographer, who had found it basking on a flat stone in a rocky area near his home in Torralba de los Sisones, northeast Spain. e late afternoon light was casting such a lovely glow over the scene that Carlos decided to experiment with his first ever double exposure. To mark the fiftieth anniversary, a new category, the People’s Choice Award, was introduced and the winner was decided by an international public vote. e inaugural award went to Marsel van Oosten for his picture of a Japanese macaque examining his prize after snatching a tourist's mobile phone. Winning and highly commended images from the competition will be on show from 29 November until 8 March 2015 at the Natural History Museum at Tring, marking the beginning of the exhibition’s UK and international tour. ■

‘tiS the SeaSon to be jolly!

W

ith a New Year on the horizon, the festive season is a time for reflection and celebration. Could that be why, according to a recent survey, November and December account for 26% of marriage proposals, with Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Eve being sited as popular times to pop the question? So with that in mind, we thought we’d turn our attention to the benefits of hiring an event, party or wedding planner. Whether it’s an engagement, wedding or milestone birthday party, make sure to celebrate in style and with a big bang!

Why hire an event Planner? In the past, event planners were deemed to be an extravagance only meant for the elite. After all, why pay out for the extra cost of hiring an event planner when you could probably do it yourself? ankfully times have changed and there’s a huge benefit and value to hiring an expert, who can navigate and guide you through the process of planning a special event. Here are a few reasons why.

Save time & money With our ever-demanding work/life schedules, finding the time to plan an event can be overwhelming for some. Where do you start? How many hours will you have to spend scouring the internet to find suppliers? at’s where an event planner comes in. Not only can they save you time but in most cases they can also save you money too by approaching relevant suppliers who can work with your budget, whilst still delivering good quality and service. ey can also pass on discounts, which aren’t available to the general public, saving you the money you spent hiring them in the first place.

creative DeSign An event planner will understand what elements are essential to making an event look great and will be able to suggest areas that can be cut to allow for budget to be spent on more “show stopping” elements. ey will help you to refine your ideas for the event to create a memorable evening for you and your guests, which reflects your personality, style, budget and vision.

StreSS Free It will save you a lot of stress & anxiety, knowing that a safe pair of hands is guiding you along the process. ey will manage all the essential party ingredients from start to finish, leaving you to enjoy the party with friends and family without any of the worry of how its all running.

exPert aDvice An event planner will talk you through each element of your event, suggesting ideas and making recommendations to keep you on track and within budget. Most event planners offer a full planning service (from concept to completion), last minute preparations and on the day co-ordination so you can choose the level of service you feel most comfortable with. Whatever you choose, you can rest assured that they will be with you on the day/night to orchestrate every last detail. If you are planning a celebratory event next year and would like to explore the benefits of having your very own dedicated event planner, give Papillon Events a call. We understand that every client and event is unique and love nothing more than turning a clients dream event into reality. ■

little Black Book Good event planners will have a little black book of tried & tested suppliers at their fingertips, who have been chosen for their talent, creativity, reliability and level of service. So you can be assured that you’re hiring the best possible suppliers for the job in hand. Whether it be marquee hire, caterers, entertainment, DJ’s, florists, special effects etc. – you name it, they can provide it. 1 4 december 2014

My reputation has been greatly enhanced since the assignment was widely reported in the national and local press. Since then a variety of different assignment have landed on my desk. liding has been established at Wycombe Air Park for over 70 years, starting with its use for training the Glider Pilot Regiment in 1942, when it was known as RAF Booker. No. 126 Gliding School operated at Booker from 1943 until 1955. e airfield was returned to civilian use in 1962 and three years later was renamed Wycombe Air Park. Nowadays it is home to Booker Gliding Club, which started life as ames Valley Gliding Club in the 1970s. Modern gliders are a far cry from the huge Horsas and Hamilcars of wartime fame, designed to carry troops and tanks. A sleek white single seater glider glimpsed from a traffic jam gives no clue as to the possibilities of unpowered flight. Glider pilots can and do travel long distances cross country, picking a path through the sky from thermal to thermal – Nature’s free power

share their passion, the club offers a range of courses to enable others to discover gliding. A Trial Lesson provides a taster of gliding flight, with the opportunity to handle the controls – safely under the supervision of an instructor in a dual controlled glider. For those who want more, there are short courses consisting of 3-4 flights, 5 day courses and a Get Your Solo option. All training - to the British Gliding Association (BGA) syllabus - is carried out in dual controlled gliders by members who are qualified instructors. Once solo, a pilot will continue to hone their skills by flying single seater gliders and working to attain the BGA’s Bronze, Silver and Gold badges, and eventually Diamonds. Gliders at Booker are towed into the air by light aircraft known as ‘tugs’, enabling the pilot to find that first thermal as quickly as possible and maximising time in the air for the student. e gliders and tugs are maintained by professional engineers in

It is also possible to make use of the ‘lift’ from the wind blowing against a ridge to maintain height. And in some conditions pilots seek out ‘lee waves’ downwind of hills to climb to dizzying heights – up to 6km, maybe more. Nowadays the pilot is assisted by an array of sophisticated electronics and GPS navigational aids but none of this is of any use without the skill and daring of the pilot flying the glider. Booker Gliding Club members enjoy all of these activities and more. Some specialise in graceful aerobatics – the club runs courses throughout the winter - others enjoy rebuilding and flying vintage gliders. e club also organises expeditions for members to fly at other clubs in the UK, Germany, France and Spain, for a holiday with like-minded friends and to experience and learn from flying at different sites – flat land, ridges or even mountains. And the club has a number of senior members who are still flying in their 70s and 80s. e club is open throughout the year, and also on weekday evenings throughout the summer. ■

ROSEWOOD LONDON

H

oused in the original headquarters of the Pearl Assurance Company, Rosewood London opened in October 2013 marking the ultra-luxury hotel group, Rosewood Hotel & Resorts presence in Europe. Within only a year, Rosewood London has made its name known by achieving six accolades, including ‘Best New Hotel in the World 2014’ by Telegraph’s Ultratravel and ‘Hotel of the Year London 2014/2015’ at the AA Hospitality Awards. Following a £85 million refurbishment which sensitively transformed the Edwardian Belle Époque building, the magnificent Grade II-listed features, including the grand Pavonazzo marble staircase which rises up through all seven storeys of the hotel beneath a 166-foot cupola, have been painstakingly restored. Tony Chi & Associates and Martin Brudinziki have exquisitely designed the stylish interior to resemble the grand traditions of a British manor house, making the hotel feel more akin to a private residence than a hotel. On arrival, guests are taken through impressive wrought-iron gates into the original Edwardian carriageway, which lead to the grand courtyard. Providing a unique arrival experience and making it the perfect start to a memorable stay. The hotel’s central location on High Holborn makes it the perfect choice for those coming to the capital for pleasure or business. The City is close by, while attractions such as Covent Garden, the British Museum, the Royal Opera House, West End theatres as well as world-class galleries are all just a short walk away. Lamb’s Conduit Street is also nearby and offers a colourful array of independent boutiques for shoppers. Rosewood London presents some of the capital’s most conversational cuisine. An ideal destination for romantic dinners or afternoon tea, there’s an assortment of culinary experiences to suit everyone. Whether you fancy a classic British dish with a twist in the bustling brasserie Holborn Dining Room. Moments from the West End, Holborn Dining Room offers a pre and post theatre menu, making it the perfect dinner destination to top off a special theatre outing. Another dining option is Scarfes Bar. Named after the renowned British artist and caricaturist Gerald Scarfe, Gerald’s

artwork adorns the marble walls and the collection of cosy velvet armchairs, 1,000 antique books and roaring fire create the atmosphere of a drawing room with the sophistication of a gentleman’s club. The lunch menu is served between noon and 3:30pm. Culinary delights include the Scarfes Club Sandwich and Lobster Macaroni and Cheese to name a few. In the evening a range of bar snacks and light dishes are served. The creative menu of cocktails, complimentary live jazz and the recently launched, bi-weekly cabaret evenings on Sundays offering a heady cocktail of dance, acrobatics, singing and close-up magic, bringing a touch of mayhem to ‘Midtown’ makes Scarfes Bar a must-visit. The stunning Mirror Room, tucked away in the heart of Rosewood London is the social hub of the hotel, offering innovative, elegant dining and afternoon tea. The tradition of British tea is taken to new heights with the opulent jewel box design and floor to ceiling mirrors. The Mirror Room has recently launched a new series of afternoon tea events, in collaboration with the West End’s brightest stars, where you can indulge in a spot of afternoon tea whilst learning more about life on stage. For those looking for a pampering, Rosewood London’s Sense Spa is available to hotel and non-hotel guests. Featuring bamboo walls, soft lighting and wooden walkways over rippling water and pebble stones, Sense Spa is the epitome of style and tranquillity. Facials, massages and many other indulgent treatments using chemical free skincare range Sodashi products are on offer. Exclusive to Rosewood London, Sense Spa is the only spa in London to use the luxurious Sodashi products. The 262 rooms and 44 suites including 8 signature suites, referred to as ‘houses’, have been crafted from the finest materials and appointed to the highest standard. The Grand Manor House Wing, one of London’s most exclusive residences, welcomes guests with its own private entrance and lift and is the only suite in the world to possess its very own postcode!

Get a license to thrill with our stylish seasonal collection.

here are moments in life when a man simply needs to look nothing less than his best. If you do want to keep things traditional with a classic tuxedo, white pleated or marcella fronted shirt and black bow to match, the best way to stand out is to do it better than everyone else. Just because the invitation says black tie it doesn’t mean you cant have some fun with it. A flattering, razor-sharp tuxedo that will give you the confidence that says, “I look this good all the time.” Even if that’s not necessarily the truth. If you feel like really making a statement a printed silk or coloured velvet jacket would have the desired ‘WOW’ effect that would turn heads when you walk into the room. Alternately change the colour of the shirt and try a black shirt with a stunning mid-night blue front that will make people step back in awe. If that’s a little extreme for your taste you could always change bow tie and try something bold and punchy. When the occasion comes calling you cannot beat feeling that you are James Bond, whether it’s Daniel Craig’s peak lapelled tuxedo in Casino Royal or the white dinner jacket worn by Sean Connery in Glodfinger. As iconic as his Aston Martin a tuxedo should always leave you with a license to thrill. Available in store now at Andrew Gardner, Wendover. Telephone. 01296 625 488 email. men@andrewgardner.co.uk

ince opening 15 years ago, Amulet remains an ever popular independent retailer in the ever changing face of Berkhamsted. Today an established haunt on the town’s shopping trail, Amulet has come a long way since it was a mere reverie for founder and director Liz Barroeta – where the shop now stands was nothing more than a brick wall. Nestled on Lower Kings Road, just a stone’s throw from the High Street, this was knocked down to create the shop window that today glints invitingly. Oering an extensive and eclectic range of products, Amulet is quite the treasure trove. Much of the shop is comprised of unique silver jewellery hand sourced worldwide by Liz, in addition to countless pieces featuring semi-precious stones ranging from labradorite to druzy, from moonstone to Derbyshire blue john, including pieces from the rare ‘lost’ stone vein from Treak Cli Cavern. Complimenting these pieces, Amulet also stocks a range of designers. î “ese include Ortak, Oak and Chris Lewis whose work is inspired by the natural landscape surrounding his home in Scotland, while his distinctive craftsmanship and penchant for asymmetrical tessellation makes for a striking range of jewellery.

Or Venezuelan born Ana Verdun whose designs encapsulate the rainforest with a feminine charm and elegance using a variety of materials including pearls. Also stocked is Suolk designer Alex Monroe who takes inspiration from British eccentricity, seen through the charmingly whimsical haberdashery range or the quintessential bumble bee pendant. Not to be forgotten, Amulet has an ever growing range of men’s jewellery including plaited and woven leather bracelets in a variety of lengths and colours by Tribal Steel and a range of bold, utilitarian designs by contemporary designer Fred Bennett, such as stainless steel dog tags or timeless cuinks. With only four people making up the team, it is safe to say that the customer service in Amulet is highly personal and attentive. Liz is a geologist by degree and the team collectively has a wide breadth of knowledge – utilise their expertise of the historical and geological properties of stones to plump for the perfect present or their experience to help cherry-pick an item to eortlessly compliment an outfit. With sta trained in the iconic jewellery quarter in Hatton Garden, and the only jewellers in Berkhamsted with a workshop on site, they are the ideal port of call for one o commissions, personal engravings or any curious repairs.

Amulet also oers a bespoke service for engagement ring design. With a choice of 9 carat or 18 carat, white or yellow gold, or platinum to order, every ring is crafted to cater to the distinct needs of the customer. As for the name of the shop, an amulet is an object with the power to protect its owner from harm or dangerâ€Śî “ere’s still time to pop into Amulet and unearth a lucky trinket or two before Christmas.

Telomeres are an essential part of human cells that aect how our cells age. Telomeres are the caps at the end of each DNA strand that protect our chromosomes. Imagine your shoelaces. Without the plastic coating around the end of each lace they become frayed until they can no longer do their job properly. Similarly, without telomeres our DNA strands become damaged and our cells can’t do their job. î “e new test has been researched by two Nobel prize winners; to date there have been over 16,000 peer reviewed studies of telomeres. î “e findings report that telomeres give a good indication of your true biological age and therefore assess the impact of life factors upon your body. In the US telomeres are used as a guide to assess the need for statins. î “ey are a good indicator of how your heart is ageing and

therefore the need to be proactive in terms of treatment. Telomeres are also used to assess how you are ageing more generally and therefore give a guideline for life expectancy. î “e results come with a report on the impact of your diet, exercise, food supplements and response to stress on your life expectancy together with suggested improvements. With this knowledge, lifestyle changes can be made to reverse the eects on the telomeres and help to slow the ageing process. Perhaps you should persuade your loved one to check how they are ageing by having their telomeres checked for one of those important birthdays while they can still make major life changes. For further information on the research and how to get this blood test please call us on 01494 410888.

In Contrast to Liposuction, LaserLipo drains fat cells rather than removing them. e fat is drained by the person’s lymphatic system, reducing a few inches each week. e LaserLipo treatment works by using a cold red laser to penetrate and break down fat cells, causing them to release their fat stores in a painless, safe and completely non- invasive procedure. LaserLipo can treat problematic areas including the mummy tummy, love handles, bulging back or anywhere the body stores fat. e number of treatments will depend on your body type and desired results, combined with a healthy diet and cardio vascular activities to speed up the process you can achieve a new you in a few weeks. Looking for a way to tone up and reduce her waist line, Louise came to me for a course of Strawberry Laser Lipo, despite attending slimming and exercise classes on and off over the years, which had some limited success, her weight would drop but that dreaded muffin top would still remain. With two treatments per week over a four week period and following a healthy eating and exercise routine she has lost an amazing 12.6 inches around her mid-section. e pictures above show how the treatments have not only reduced the inches from her waist line but tightened and toned the area reducing the muffin top look. Treatments can be carried out at home at a time to suit you.

ENSURING YOUR GLASS EXTENSION COMPLIES WITH THE BUILDING REGULATIONS

When it comes to adding a conservatory or orangery to a dwelling or changing a glass roof for a solid one, many UK home owners have been badly advised by misinformed neighbours, double glazing suppliers and double glazing salesmen looking for a quick sale without advising you of the consequences

S

ome glass extensions do need both planning permission and Building Regulatory Approval, whilst some need full planning permission only, or to apply for and comply with the Building Regulations. When it comes to replacing a translucent conservatory roof with a solid roof, many conservatory owners don’t realise that they can only do so by first obtaining Building Regulatory Approval. It may be helpful to first know what the “official” definition of a conservatory or glass extension is. Conservatories, porches and other such glass extensions share a common description with Regulation 9(1), 21(4) stating to meet the exemption status in Schedule 2 Class 7 of the Building Regulations. % # than 30 square metres. % # # ! # walls, windows or doors which meet the energy efficiency requirements. % ! & # " the conservatory, orangery or porch. Consequently by adding a solid rood the structure then becomes a de facto extension with all that entails, and Building Regulations Application needs to be made. In addition planning permission may be needed. In some cases property owners may unwittingly be exceeding any intact Permitted Development Rights if the floor area of the conservatory is greater than PD rights allow. If since the conservatory was built the Permitted Development Rights have been withdrawn by the local authority, then it will not be possible to add a solid roof without first obtaining planning permission.

SHADES OF GREY

F

ifty Shades Of Grey is a best-seller with its tale of seduction, and just as irresistible is the trend for shades of grey in interiors. Gabrielle Fagan explores the sophisticated power of grey and how it transforms rooms. Grey is so sexy and sophisticated - not the masterful hero of the best-selling novel, but the decor colour. Once an overlooked ‘wallflower’ section on the colour chart, grey has shed it’s cold, institutional image, and is proving it’s power to transform any setting. Flirting with its subtle, versatile tones, from crisp charcoal and French grey to shimmering silver and mysterious smoke-grey could be just the way to turn up the heat at home. “Grey is a surprisingly calming and harmonious colour to live with, but you must choose the right tone, advises Mark Upstone, head of global visual display at The Conran Shop. “Greys with more brown in the mix will feel warm - white based greys will feel colder. “Be bold. Don’t restrict yourself to a feature wall, grey looks better en masse, and use different finishes of the same tone to create intriguing interest and depth. “Give grey a starring role by using it on walls and paintwork, he suggests, and a matching gloss paint finish for woodwork. If that feels too overpowering, tone it down with pastels, white or a zingy kick of sharp citrus, which will ensure it has less of a masculine edge. FACE THE WALL If you’re committing to a new relationship with this colour, the best place to start is with the walls. To find the one grey you love - experiment! Try colours in different tones by using sample pots, but ensure you see how they

change with the light in your home throughout the day. It also works well to simply paint one wall in your chosen grey and use it as a backdrop to a focus piece of furniture such as a striking sofa or piece of furniture. FURNISHING AFFAIR Texture, shape and symmetry are vital ingredients for successful grey sanctuaries. This season, splashes of colour are an antidote to our winter gloom and almost anything goes with greys. Pinks always sit well, or you could be a little adventurous and choose a vibrant raspberry, deep purple or burnt orange and soft yellows for a lovely contrast. Grey works in modern and older properties, and will look as beautiful in a minimalist setting matched with sleek white shelving as it will with period wood panelling and mahogany furniture.

SEDUCTIVE SETTING Transform a bedroom palette with greys in decor or silky fabrics to bring an air of relaxation to an uptight setting. Hang drapery panels which puddle on the floor to frame your windows with a layer of textured sheers behind them for the ultimate in privacy. Grey tones in fabrics and wallpapers create a glamorous and striking effect, especially paired with pattern and texture. It’s a chic, streamlined look which also taps into the five-star ‘hotel’ trend which will be very evident in interiors this autumn. If passion for the look is running high, dress a bed appropriately in shades of grey bedlinen. Simple luxury touches are essential such as rugs and lighting.

Grey is full of surprises and wonÂ’t fail to seduce any setting, so follow the guide to taking advantage of its charms.

7 BEST OF THE

A

ny proud homeowner knows that keeping your home looking its best is just as important as keeping yourself well-groomed. Redecorating your entire property can be costly in both time and funds, but subtle nods to the latest trends in interior design keep things looking and feeling fresh. TREND 1 TURQUOISE The pastels and beiges of previous seasons are being firmly placed to one side as we embracing richer jewel tones. Turquoise is undoubtedly the must-have colour of the year; if you don’t want to commit to a full feature wall in the colour, then consider adding some accessories such as cushions, throws or rugs to bring in the trend. Be sure to choose shades that are rich as opposed to more subtle tones - this look is all about opulence. TREND 2 MIXING TEXTURES The fashion world saw an explosion of texture, as

INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS

over your curtain pole for a casual, bohemian look. TREND 4 OPULENT KITCHENS Minimalist kitchens were the height of interior fashion a few years ago, but simplicity takes a back seat in 2014 as glamour arrives on the menu. Don’t get glamour confused with gaudiness, however; this look is all about decorative, Easterninspired lighting, sparkling metals such as brass, and richly painted wood. Some quirky accessories such as ornate kettles and teapots add the perfect finishing touches for this trend. TREND 5 VINTAGE PIECES Tying in with the luxury that the other trends encompass, this season your home accessories should all have flair and originality. The best way to do this is by picking up vintage, oneoff pieces that nobody else is likely to have A vintage armoire or chaise longue are the ultimate statement pieces, but you can also achieve the look with smaller items such as a vintage clock on the mantelpiece or some vintage movie posters.

Here are the key interior trends that you may want to think about incorporating quilted fabrics and leather became big news. This trend seeps into the world of interior design. Leather cushions can be mixed with corduroy throws to add interest to your sofa, or add some excitement to the bedroom with blends of fur and satin. The key is to mix your textures to create an eclectic feel. TREND 3 SHEER DRAPES If you have read our blog post on how to make apartments look bigger, then you will know that light is an essential to making the most of your space. Luckily one of the most fashionable things you can do for your dwelling is to open up the space around your window by replacing heavy curtains with light, sheer fabrics. Choose sheer curtains or simply pick up some fabric from a local market to drape 6 8 december 2014

TREND 6 TRANSPARENT FURNITURE Certainly not a trend for the faint-hearted acrylic furniture is going to become big news in interiors. Fans of minimalism will adore the added space and light that transparent chairs and tables allows for in a room, while fashionistas will love the retro feel that it creates. If you’re not quite brave enough to go for full acrylic, then transparent legs on sofas or tables will create the same effect, though more subtly. TREND 7 HEXAGONS Things get very edgy. In fact, the more edges the better. Things that were traditionally square in shape – think tiles, tabletops and mirrors – are given a modern twist by appearing in hexagonal form.

7 0 december 2014

Taking pride of place at Quinta do Lago this autumn, the North Course was officially unveiled by victorious European Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley alongside renowned American golf architect tect Beau Welling Welling in October. One of the most talked-about design projects in Europe in 2014 – it was named as ‘Europe’s Best New Golf Course’ at last month’s 1st World World Go Golf olf A Awards wards – the new-look layout has been redeveloped at a considerable cost and is a perfect illustration of Quinta do Lago’s philosophy and desire to adapt and change to meet the needs of the modern-day golfer. In line to become the new number one course at the resort and part of a significant investment programme that has been undertaken since 2009, the North Course has been revamped with the emphasis firmly on precision and strategy. While many modern-day developments tend to focus on length, Welling Welling and McGinley M have been keen to create a

ith the festive season now in full swing and celebrations well under way it is time to get ready for the big day. My favourite choice for the main event is a roast goose. Traditionally cooked on Michaelmas during late autumn to mark the end of the harvests and the settling of debt between farmer and land owner, it has over the years become popular as a Christmas roast. e flesh is quite lean, dark and dense, and covered in a thick layer of fatty skin that bastes the meat well while it cooks. Duck fat makes the most incredible roast potatoes and is an added bonus. Served with prune onion and thyme stuffing, apple sauce and braised red cabbage makes for a fantastic alternative to roast turkey. Moving to a sweeter note it is the time of year to indulge in warming puddings, and as an adaption of the classical Austrian layered pastry , strudel, we are serving this modern version with spiced apple and sultanas finished with a wintery salted porter caramel and vanilla ice cream to sample as part of our festive lunch menus – delicious!

EAGLE LOW DRAG GT

GENTLEMEN:

START YOUR ENGINE London Classic Car Show roars into town. Organised by the team behind CarFest and Top Gear Live

L

ondon will resonate to the sounds of powerful V8 and V12 engines next month as the capital plays host to a new vibrant and exciting classic car show. The first ever London Classic Car Show will highlight examples of the most evocative classic and collectors’ cars ever made. But these are no mere static exhibits. A unique centrepiece will be a special ‘street’ feature – called the Grand Avenue – up and down which the show’s 100 top cars will be driven. It will give visitors the chance not just to gaze at some of the most desirable and valuable classic cars in the world while at rest, but also to see and, importantly, to hear them in action. “The Grand Avenue will add an extra dimension to the new London Classic Car Show,” says Bas Bungish, Event Director, Brand Events. “Part of the appeal of a classic Ferrari is the snarl of its V12 engine while the V8 rumble from an American muscle car is music to the ears of every enthusiast. In bringing some of the world’s greatest cars to life, the London Classic Car Show will ensure that ExCeL will echo to these aural treats.” The London Classic Car is expected to attract not just existing classic car enthusiasts as well as serious collectors but will also infuse newcomers with a passion for the pastime. Among the myriad of other attractions at the show will be displays from premium marque owners clubs and heritage showcases from leading manufacturers. Historic racing and competition cars will be featured while leading collectors will be invited to present a special car from their collection. Classic dealers will be on hand with desirable cars

for sale, while other stands will highlight the skills of restorers and specialist suppliers. There will also be a large autojumble offering quality memorabilia for sale. The investment side of the thriving classic car movement will come under scrutiny in the Investors Forum at the show, and experts will put their necks on the line by identifying ‘ones to watch’, those future classics that are considered bargains today. The aim is for the London Classic Car Show to become an annual ‘must do’ fixture on the international classic car calendar.

MOST LUXURIOUS SUV EVER T he Holland & Holland Range Rover builds upon the strengths of the two iconic British brands to provide the perfect vehicle for the sporting gun manufacturer’s customers. Thanks to the skill and craftsmanship of the team, the new car is able to combine the unrivalled off-road capability of the Range Rover with an extensive range of bespoke features. Both Land Rover and Holland & Holland hold Royal Warrants and the collaboration between them has resulted in the most luxurious, and most expensive, Range Rover ever. Both SVO and Holland & Holland represent the very pinnacle of craftsmanship

Based on the Range Rover Autobiography Black, the summit of the Land Rover model portfolio, the Holland & Holland Range Rover is available with a choice of powertrains: the diesel-powered 4.4-litre SDV8, which delivers 339PS and the 510PS petrol-powered 5.0-litre V8 Supercharged. It is instantly discernable from a distance, even among other Range Rovers, thanks to the unique Holland & Holland Green of the full bodywork, mirrors and bonnet vent. the lower accent door badges of both long and standard wheelbase versions, as well as on the tailgate. On the inside, the Range Rover Autobiography Black has been tailored to accommodate the lifestyle pursuits of Holland & Holland’s customers. The Executive Class seating package in the long wheelbase car makes the most of the additional 7.3 inches of legroom and 17 degrees recline available to the rear seat passengers. Two individual fully adjustable seats are complemented by an extended and re-designed centre console with electrically deployable walnut tables, integrated USB charging sockets, enhanced stowage and bespoke lighting. In the Holland & Holland car, the interior is upholstered with the softest tan and espresso leather hides, with precision leather detailing including Holland & Holland embroidery on the front seats. This is perfectly complemented by the sustainablysourced French walnut veneer, subtly polished to resemble the oil-finished gunstocks for which Holland & Holland’s craftsmen have been famous since the company’s foundation in 1835. To mark this, their logo is inlaid into the front centre console. The engraver’s art is well represented too, with Holland & Holland’s branddefining acanthus scroll turning the

internal door handles into works of art. The fascia letterbox panels are decorated with gunstock checkering and the exquisite engraving of the centre console panel has been inspired by Holland & Holland’s distinctive forend diamonds. What really sets the new Holland & Holland Range Rover apart is located in the boot. A stunning leathertrimmed aluminium loadspace cabinet - debossed with the Holland & Holland logo – especially designed for this car. Its espresso Alcantara-trimmed interior can be precisely fitted to safely transport the owner of the car’s pair of Holland & Hollands - although it is also removable when maximum luggage capacity is required. It sits on a deployable loadspace floor and finished with leather and wood veneer. The sliding floor is also designed so that it can still be sat upon when owners wish to change their footwear or stop for a brief picnic. When floor and box are in their travel position, they sit low and well back in the boot to ensure that there is still plenty of room for luggage or sports equipment.
