MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE! It is only a matter of weeks until Christmas and Chorleywood Bookshop is about to wave its festive wand and make a host of dreams come true. But this magic isn't just for the children, this time CW BS will be fulfilling the wishes of both young and old. So if you've ever dreamed (or still dream!) about becoming a sporting legend or a world famous astronaut now's your chance to meet two super heroes and pick up some tips! On Wednesday 26th November golfing superstar Ian Poulter will be at Merchant Taylors' School to talk about his very revealing autobiography No Limits. Then, at the same venue, on Sunday December 7th Canadian astronaut and star of YouTube, Chris Hadfield will be talking about his experiences in space and showing us some of the remarkable photos he took whilst orbiting the Earth. What a treat! For those who aren't up on golfing news: Ian Poulter has been ranked fifth in the world, he is a member of the world's two professional golf tours, the US based PGA Tour which he has won twice and the European Tour which he has won 12 times. He has one of the best Ryder Cup 10

OCTOBER2014

records and is currently ranked 25th in the world. Add to that a few fascinating facts: he was born in Hertfordshire but now lives in Florida, he is married with four children, has a collection of super cars, owns a very successful clothing line, is an avid Arsenal fan, and is known as a controversial tweeter. Sounds like all the ingredients for a very interesting evening with... Just like Ian Poulter, astronaut Chris Hadfield has also used Twitter to his advantage and has has more than a million followers. In fact he has been described as 'perhaps the most social media savvy astronaut ever to leave Earth'. Hadfield has had a remarkable 35 year career as a military pilot and astronaut. He was the first Canadian to walk in space, has flown two space shuttle missions and served as commander of the International Space Station. In March 2013 he was commander of Expedition 35, responsible for a crew of five astronauts, and helped run dozens of scientific experiments. He gained world wide popularity chronicling life aboard a space station and taking pictures of earth and posting them on Twitter. During his free time on the shuttle he played guitar and recorded music for an album and on 12th May 2013, just before returning home, he released a video of himself singing David Bowie's Space

Oddity. That video became a worldwide sensation and has had 22 million views on YouTube. Hadfield will be talking about An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth and his new book, You Are Here, which is a breathtaking collection of incredible images taken from space which reveals the wonders of science and shows views of cities like you've never seen before. Both Poulter's autobiography and Hadfield's photo album will make fabulous Christmas presents and will be available at the events and from Chorleywood Bookshop. The bookshop is your one stop shop for Christmas - they have all the latest titles, annuals, calendars and cards but also a wonderful range of gifts, candles, decorations and children's toys. The bookshop has also commissioned a unique set of Christmas cards which feature Christ church and they have some beautiful mugs, coasters and cards which have four different views of Chorleywood, these are available exclusively at the shop. So don't miss out, start your Christmas shopping NOW! Tickets for both events are £12 for adults and £6 for students and the books will be available for £10 on the night. ‘Tis The season To be jolly!

Hedsor House

With a New Year on the horizon, the festive season is a time for reflection and celebration. Could that be why, according to a recent survey, November and December account for 26% of marriage proposals, with Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Eve being sited as popular times to pop the question? So with that in mind, we thought we’d turn our attention to the benefits of hiring an event, party or wedding planner. Whether it’s an engagement, wedding or milestone birthday party, make sure to celebrate in style and with a big bang! WHY HIRE AN EVENT PLANNER?

In the past, event planners were deemed to be an extravagance only meant for the elite. After all, why pay out for the extra cost of hiring an event planner when you could probably do it yourself? Thankfully times have changed and there’s a huge benefit and value to hiring an expert, who can navigate and guide you through the process of planning a special event. Here are a few reasons why. SAVE TIME & MONEY

With our ever-demanding work/life schedules, finding the time to plan an event can be overwhelming for some. Where do you start? How many hours will you have to spend scouring the internet to find suppliers? That’s where an event planner comes in. Not only can they save you time but in most cases they can also save you money too by approaching relevant suppliers who can work with your

budget, whilst still delivering good quality and service. They can also pass on discounts, which aren’t available to the general public, saving you the money you spent hiring them in the first place.

along the process. They will manage all the essential party ingredients from start to finish, leaving you to enjoy the party with friends and family without any of the worry of how its all running.

LITTLE BLACK BOOK

Good event planners will have a little black book of tried & tested suppliers at their fingertips, who have been chosen for their talent, creativity, reliability and level of service. So you can be assured that you’re hiring the best possible suppliers for the job in hand. Whether it be marquee hire, caterers, entertainment, DJ’s, florists, special effects etc. – you name it, they can provide it. CREATIVE DESIGN

An event planner will understand what elements are essential to making an event look great and will be able to suggest areas that can be cut to allow for budget to be spent on more “show stopping” elements. They will help you to refine your ideas for the event to create a memorable evening for you and your guests, which reflects your personality, style, budget and vision. STRESS FREE

It will save you a lot of stress & anxiety, knowing that a safe pair of hands is guiding you

EXPERT ADVICE

An event planner will talk you through each element of your event, suggesting ideas and making recommendations to keep you on track and within budget. Most event planners offer a full planning service (from concept to completion), last minute preparations and on the day co-ordination so you can choose the level of service you feel most comfortable with. Whatever you choose, you can rest assured that they will be with you on the day/night to orchestrate every last detail. If you are planning a celebratory event next year and would like to explore the benefits of having your very own dedicated event planner, give Papillon Events a call. We understand that every client and event is unique and love nothing more than turning a clients dream event into reality. Get in touch today for a free consultation. TOWN FARM ART SHOW IN CHEDDINGTON ONE WEEKEND ONLY • FRIDAY 28 - SUNDAY 30 NOVEMBER On the last weekend of November Christine Bass will be hosting the Town Farm Art show again. Building on the success of previous years, there will be 12 artists at this popular event, displaying their work throughout Christine’s house and garden. The artists are: Christine Bass (painter), Sophie Bass (illustration), Louise Brainwood (textiles), Susan Day (porcelain), Jessica Ecott (glass), Kirsteen Holuj (ceramics), James Ort (sculpture),Anja Penger-Onyett (ceramics), Yannick Perichon (stonecarving), Mick Randall, (woodcraft), Mick Waterhouse (Woodcarving) and Kate Wilkinson ( Jewellery) New for this year are four artists showing in the garden, including Jessica Ecott and James Ort. Jessica Ecott works in glass, her glass work is all kiln-formed, and she uses fused glass to make sculptures for the garden and wall-mounted pieces for interiors. She also makes three dimensional sculptures in cast glass and mixed materials – mostly wood and metal. James Ort loves experimenting with different mediums but predominantly works in ceramic and wire. His latest creations often combine the two mediums using a technique that he has developed himself. His style of working in clay is loose and expressive and these qualities bring life and 18

energy to the pieces. Indoors, Louise Brainwood, a Berhamsted based textile artist

predominantly plant forms. These are then interpreted in a strong graphic style and printed

will show her contemporary textile designs. These are printed using a range of techniques onto natural fabrics and used to produce a vibrant collection of home and gift items, including cushions, purses and notebooks. Designs are inspired by Scandinavian and 50s design and imagery is taken from natural sources,

either by hand using screen or block printing techniques or digitally in a new collection of professionally printed fabrics. Christine Bass paints contemporary landscapes and

still lifes characterized by strong lines and shapes, flattened planes and the use of vibrant colour. She grew up in Trinidad and the bright light and vivid colours of the tropics still exert an influence in her paintings. She draws inspiration from the Buckinghamshire countryside: the gentle beauty of the Chiltern Hills, views from the Ridgeway, the patterns of fields scored by furrows and bounded by hedgerows, the bare trees of winter, the colours of crops and the seasons. Again, Susan Day’s porcelain lamps and tea light holders will be on display. New designs include those based on textures from found objects. Susan commented “I love taking part in the Town Farm Art Show. Christine makes all the artists and the visitors so welcome. I’m really looking forward to this year with even more artists and Belgian waffles!” Town Farm supports Rennie Grove Hospice Care collecting donations for refreshments. This festive art show has lots of exciting ideas for hand-crafted, high quality Christmas gifts. plus mulled wine, home baking and freshly made Belgian waffles!

TradiTional ChrisTmas fun aT ChilTern open air museum

Celebrate the traditions of Christmas past with a visit to Chiltern Open Air Museum in Chalfont St Giles, Bucks. This unique site, home to over thirty rescued historic buildings set in 45 acres of beautiful Chilterns landscape, aims to preserve not only the buildings but the traditions of our past. With the help of a team of dedicated local volunteers, each year the Museum hosts a festive Christmas event which helps bring a traditional chiltern Christmas to life. The Museum will be decorated for the festive season, with the older buildings decked with holly and ivy gathered from the Museum’s woods by a team of dedicated volunteers. Illuminated by candles and cosy firelight, these warm and welcoming buildings are wonderful to explore on a cold winter’s day. The more modern parts of the Museum 20

NOVEMBER2014

are not left out, with the 1940s Prefab (rescued from the Finch Lane Estate in Amersham; dismantled during November 1997 and rebuilt at the Museum in 1993) celebrating a restrained wartime Christmas enlivened by a simply-decorated tree and make-do-and-mend decorations. Local folk singers will be visiting the Museum and their traditional songs and music, accompanied by simple guitar, fiddle or accordion, are always enjoyed by visitors. Several of the buildings, including the picturesque Victorian Toll House and newly-rebuilt Haddenham Croft Cottage, will be brought to life by costumed re-enactors ‘The Mannered Mob’, who will be making their own Christmas preparations including cooking historic foods. You can even enjoy a nostalgic magic lantern

show! The children will be kept amused with simple Christmas crafts, making their own gift tags to take home, decorating pinecone Christmas trees and even helping to decorate the Museum’s own Christmas tree. They can write a letter to Father Christmas, and even the youngest visitors can drop in to thatched Leagrave Cottage to have a go at making their very own spiced Christmas biscuits, which will be baked in the restored 1920s cooking range for them to enjoy. And, of course, no Christmas event would be complete without a

visit to Father Christmas himself, so why not bring the children to meet him in person, give him their letter and collect a small traditional gift to take home? Bring the family and, well wrapped up against the cold, enjoy exploring Chiltern Open Air Museum’s beautiful buildings, woodland and meadows before treating yourself to a delicious slice of cake or a mince pie and a warming drink. Even the dog is welcome (as long as he’s kept on a short lead, to avoid disturbing the Museum’s horses, sheep, cows and chickens)!

Dying without a will is still a scary prospect If recent trick-or-treaters gave you a fright this Halloween, be prepared for an even more terrifying fact. Shockingly, recent statistics reveal that 61% of people in England and Wales die with no valid will, meaning the majority of families run the risk of their loved ones assets being distributed in a way that wasn’t what anyone intended and could lead to difficulties that could easily have been avoided. New inheritance laws that came into force on 1 October do, however, offer greater protection to married couples and civil partners where the spouse dies without making a will. Nevertheless, these rules are not an alternative to seeking expert advice on ensuring that those you want to benefit from your wealth do so. Under the reforms, if one half of a couple without any children dies intestate, then the remaining spouse will now inherit the entire estate. Previously, he or she would have received £450,000, plus half of the rest, with the remainder going to other family members, including parents and siblings. For those with children, the surviving spouse will now inherit the first £250,000 26

NOVEMBER2014

together with any chattels as before, but will also receive half of the remaining amount absolutely. Previously this would have gone into a life interest trust, with the spouse only being paid interest. The remainder will be inherited by any children, going into a separate trust if they are under 18. Sharon Heselton, probate executive at leading law firm B P Collins LLP, says the move is, on the face of it, a positive step forward. “The existing rules were very complex, so anything that simplifies them must be very welcome, alongside the improved provision to a spouse” she said. “Although when the consultation originally took place, the Government was considering including unmarried couples, provided they had lived together for a minimum period, such as two years, but the reforms haven’t delivered on this so making a will in these circumstances is essential." In addition, step-children still have no automatic right to inherit and the reforms also affect any adopted children, removing a rule which meant children lost their right to inherit from a parent’s estate when they turned 18, if they were adopted by another

family before that age. Although the reforms provide greater protection for couples, as a surviving spouse will now inherit all their late partners’ estate, Sharon makes the point that if an individual really wants to ensure all their wishes are met after death, there is no substitute for making a will. In some cases, the intestacy rules will not always be in line with what the deceased perhaps intended to do with their belongings. For example, if you die leaving a spouse/civil partner and a child from your marriage, your partner will take £250,000 plus half of the remainder. There is no guarantee that they will leave any of their money to your child upon their subsequent death or even that there will be any money left to leave. The previous rules ensured that your child would eventually receive the remaining funds upon the death of the surviving spouse/civil partner. Despite the new rules, failing to plan for the inevitable remains a risky strategy. To speak with a member of the private client team at B P Collins LLP about making a will, call 01753 279030 or email privateclient@bpcollins.co.uk

DiamonDs in the sky

Gliding has been established at Wycombe Air Park for over 70 years, starting with its use for training the Glider Pilot Regiment in 1942, when it was known as RAF Booker. No. 126 Gliding School operated at Booker from 1943 until 1955. The airfield was returned to civilian use in 1962 and three years later was renamed Wycombe Air Park. Nowadays it is home to Booker Gliding Club, which started life as Thames Valley Gliding Club in the 1970s. Modern gliders are a far cry from the huge Horsas and Hamilcars of wartime fame,

designed to carry troops and tanks. A sleek white single seater glider glimpsed from a traffic jam gives no clue as to the possibilities of unpowered flight. Glider pilots can and do travel long distances cross country, picking a path through the sky from thermal to thermal – Nature’s free power source. On a summer’s day flights of 500km or more are not unusual. It is also possible to make use of 28

NOVEMBER2014

the ‘lift’ from the wind blowing against a ridge to maintain height. And in some conditions pilots seek out ‘lee waves’ downwind of hills to climb to dizzying heights – up to 6km, maybe more. Nowadays the pilot is assisted by an array of sophisticated electronics and GPS navigational aids but none of this is of any use without the skill and daring of the pilot flying the glider. Booker Gliding Club members enjoy all of these activities and more. Some specialise in graceful aerobatics – the club runs courses throughout the winter - others enjoy rebuilding and flying vintage gliders. The club also organises expeditions for members to fly at other clubs in the UK, Germany, France and Spain, for a holiday with like-minded friends and to experience and learn from flying at different sites – flat land, ridges or even mountains. Glider pilots are passionate about their sport, and in order to share their passion, the club offers a range of courses to enable others to discover gliding. A Trial Lesson provides a taster of gliding flight, with the opportunity to handle the controls – safely under the supervision of an instructor in a dual controlled glider. For those who want more, there are short courses consisting of 3-4 flights, 5 day courses and a Get Your Solo option. All training - to the British Gliding Association (BGA) syllabus - is carried out in dual controlled gliders by members who are

qualified instructors. Once solo, a pilot will continue to hone their skills by flying single seater gliders and working to attain the BGA’s Bronze, Silver and Gold badges, and eventually Diamonds. Gliders at Booker are towed into the air by light aircraft known as ‘tugs’, enabling the pilot to find that first thermal as quickly as possible and maximising time in the air for the student. The gliders and tugs are maintained by professional engineers in the club’s own workshops. Gliding offers something for everyone to enjoy, any age – it is one of only a handful of sports where women can compete on equal terms with men. The club’s cadet scheme provides young people with subsidised training in return for duty days and helping with keeping the club running – the minimum age for solo flight is now 14 years. And the club has a number of senior members who are still flying in their 70s and 80s. The club is open throughout the year, and also on weekday evenings throughout the summer. This won’t be the London store’s only masterful display visible from the street…

To celebrate, Selfridges has nominated what it considers to be the 25 most enchanted stories ever ever told, stretching across different eras as well as themes - they are not all about Christmas, but they all have have enchantment in their tale and have have been selected to be at least one generation old - so no Harry Potter in sight. The oldest story featuring within the top 25 is ov over 300 yyears ears old (Sleeping Beauty by the pioneer of the modern fairy tale genre, Charles Perrault) and the most recent to make the cut is Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman first published in 1978.

A dazzling centrepiece installation will vie for attention atop the historic neo-classical Oxford Street canopy. Expressing storytelling in a 3D exhibit, it is made of a mix of polystyrene and aluminium and decorated with 1,000 metres of neon lights and over 10,000 LED lights. The installation is the biggest neon sign to be seen in London this Christmas.

T

The hugely successful sub-zero experience - The Magical Ice Kingdom will increase in size with even more fantastical snow and ice sculptures. This year children and adults are invited to walk through the frozen forest and catch sight of the ice fairies, explore the world of frozen princesses, unicorns and the Snow Queen and discover Merlin. Visitors are invited to sit with the Knights of the Round Table and see the spectacular dragon and back by popular demand will be the castle’s ice slide and the ice thrones.

from the comfort of your own private box with a bottle of champagne and delicious chocolates, all included in the price. Always quick to sell out, this year Zippos Christmas Circus will be a Caribbean Christmas celebration, all the fun of Christmas but with sunshine! A perfect treat for all the family, the show will feature an amazing springboard act, clowns, aerialist, high-speed juggler and a thrilling high wire act. For the evening crowd Zippos returns with, Cirque Berserk – Mechanika a very contemporary circus thrill show for the older thrill seekers. This fast paced thrill show will feature the most dangerous circus acts in the world, including the Globe of Death - the beyond-thrilling spectacle featuring three motorbikes riding together at up to 60mph in an unbelievably small steel globe and much much more! Cirque Berserk goes where no circus has gone before.

The UK’s largest outdoor Ice Rink stretching over 1,600m2 will once again be located around the picturesque Victorian Bandstand, on which there will be live music played throughout the day and night as skaters take to the ice for a spin. For those who want to gaze at the action from above, the iconic Giant Observation Wheel will illuminate the skyline.

The ever-popular Bavarian Village will be ready to serve even more bratwurst and mulled wine whilst hosting live music throughout the day and evening. In addition to the many restaurants and bars there will be delicious food available throughout the attraction to help you warm up on a cold crisp winter’s day. And for those thrill-seekers, there will be an array traditional and high energy rides.

Other favourite attractions making a welcome return include Santa Land, a haven for young visitors where Father Christmas will be every day with his Elves and a sack of free gifts. For those Christmas shoppers, there will also be over 200 chalets in the beautiful Angels Christmas & Yuletide Markets offering unusual and handmade gifts and crafts, including ceramics, candles, jewellery, wooden toys, nativity scenes and Christmas decorations.

Hyde Park Winter Wonderland is a huge hit with the celebrity crowds, those who have been spotted enjoying the festive treats have included: Prince Harry, Cara Delevingne, Kate Moss, One Direction, Elle Macpherson, Damien Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Amanda Holden, Uma Thurman, Rod Stewart & Penny Lancaster, Claudia Schiffer & Matthew Vaughn, Chris Martin, Tom Cruise, Liam Gallagher and Liz Hurley.

Following their sell-out run last year, the UK’s favourite circus, Zippos Circus returns with two shows - their ever-popular daytime show for all the family, Zippos Christmas Circus and an evening show for older thrill seekers, Cirque Berserk.

So book early for the Ice Skating, The Magical Ice Kingdom, Giant Observation Wheel and Zippos Circus to avoid disappointment and discover what 15 million visitors have already enjoyed.

Back by popular demand, the Zippos VIP boxes will be available to hire for Cirque Berserk, where you receive fast-track entry, and watch the show 40

reflect the spirit of the time in their very own way. It is the kind of fashion which always makes a difference but never betrays its principles. Distinctive and unmistakable. The idea of ‘Coordinates’, in other words the ability to variously combine pieces of clothing, serves as a guideline. With this idea Marc Cain does not simply mean the perfectly harmonized outfit but the subtle meeting of apparently different components. Opposites are finding each other and thus result in a picture and thereby a new definition of the term ‘look’ – the Marc Cain look.

leading light ANGELA RIPPON INSPIRES RESIDENTS AND GUESTS AT TWO LEADING CARE HOMES.

Broadcaster, Journalist and Alzheimer’s Society Ambassador Angela Rippon made two presentations in one day at two local care homes. Angela, a long-time friend of Porthaven, the company that runs the two homes – Avondale, in Aylesbury and Chiltern Grange in Stokenchurch – provided an inspirational talk for residents, family and friends, and invited guests. A firm favourite with fans of the BBC One's Nine O'Clock News, Angela was the first female journalist to present the BBC national television news on a permanent basis. Here work has taken her all over the globe reporting some of the world’s most important events, for both the BBC and other networks. Latterly, she has developed a high profile for her hard work in educating and helping wider society in understanding memory loss in older age and dementia. During her talks at the homes in the morning at Chiltern Grange and in the afternoon at Avondale, Angela also shared her intimate knowledge of elderly care during some moving moments, which captured the imaginations of everyone attending both events. Her own mother 54

died with dementia in 2009 and it was evident to all that she spoke from the heart. “We need to change the mindset of a generation to accept dementia and not be afraid of it, to take away the stigma associated with it,” she commented. This visit is one of a number of scheduled activities that are fundamental to the approach Porthaven takes to senior care. The company is a national award winner for its varied programme of activity and entertainment. The homes continue with a full calendar of events, whilst excelling in providing the best possible resident experience through stylish, homely accommodation and exceptional care. Sean Kime, a director of Porthaven was present at both events: “These were milestone events for both homes which were organised to show what passion we put into our schedule of entertainment and activity for the residents we serve. As you would expect, Angela Rippon was on tip top form and charmed everyone, whilst at the same time putting a spotlight on the importance of respect, care and understanding for older people that are becoming frail.”

zap that fat! WEIGHT THAT WON'T SHIFT THROUGH TRADITIONAL DIET AND EXERCISE CAN BE ZAPPED INTO SUBMISSION WITH STRAWBERRY, A FAT-CELL-BUSTING MACHINE FROM STRAWBERRY LASER LIPO.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

• Up to 60 diode laser paddles are attached to a strap and placed on the fatty areas. • Two smaller Probe lasers are placed over lymphatic glands and held in place by underwear. • The Laser Lipo will then be switched on for 10 minutes and then relocated to another area if required. • The treated area will be measured to assess inch loss achieved and depending on the client, results are expected to be between 0.5 and 3 inches. • Follow our recommended Nutrition plan for better results. CELL BREAKDOWN

The breaking down of the fat cells starts when the laser penetrates the skin and makes contact with the fat cells. Pores form on the cells causing them to 'sweat'. The water, Glycerol and free fatty acids emerge from the cells and then occupy the space beneath the fatty layer in the skin. The fat cell is therefore reduced in size.

56

NOVEMBER2014

AFTER CARE

After Care advice encourages clients to follow a sensible health and exercise routine. The Strawberry Laser procedure does not harm the body in any way and will still maintain its ability to store fat in the areas where the work has been carried out. This is an important health factor as it prevents the fat being stored in different parts such as around the heart or other vital organs. If clients eat sensibly and regularly, combined with exercise, the body shape will retain the effects of the treatment. The reason behind the

Movember Movement O

ctober is known as Breast awareness month throughout the world and therefore highlights womens’ health issues. November has now become seen as men’s health month because of Movember. It’s been 11 years since Movember first burst onto the scene in Melbourne, Australia and in that time it’s grown to become one of the largest men’s health charities in the world. A mere 30 people first participated in 2003, a vast contrast to the 4 million who have fundraised since, the 20 countries taking part each year and the £346 million raised. But with November now upon us and with our moustaches primed and ready to blossom, can you actually explain who and what Movember supports or even some of the signs and symptoms to look out for in your adult life? Here is an overview of four of the more common men’s health problems.

Prostate Cancer The prostate is a small gland in the pelvis and is generally about the size of a walnut. It is located between the penis and bladder and its main function is to help in the production of semen. Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer in men. Each year in the UK men diagnosed with prostate cancer are estimated at 36,000. On most occasions the cancer usually causes no symptoms until it has grown to a size large enough to start pressuring the urethra. Some of the more common symptoms include... Frequent urination, most often during the night A constant need to rush to the toilet Difficulty urinating or taking a long time or weak flow Feeling of a full bladder after urinating While these symptoms may not suggest you have prostate cancer, it’s important to always visit your Doctor for investigation.

Testicular Cancer Testicular cancer remains an uncommon type of cancer that primarily affects younger men. The most common symptom is a painless lump or swelling in one of your testicles. Other symptoms can include... A dull ache or sharp pain in your testicles or scrotum A feeling of heaviness in your scrotum A dull ache in your lower stomach area A general feeling of being unwell and fatigued

58

NOVEMBER2014

Research has shown that less than 4% of testicular lumps are cancerous but that doesn’t mean you should ignore a lump or swelling in your testicle, therefore it’s crucial to visit your Doctor as soon as possible.

Bowel Cancer The incidence of bowel cancer is on the increase however if caught early and the troublesome polyps are removed during colonoscopy it is easily treatable avoiding major surgery and with a very good survival rate. The common signs or symptoms that require investigation by a Specialist are... 1. Rectal bleed – especially dark stool and blood mixed in the stool 2. Black tar like stool 3. Change in bowel habit lasting more than 4 weeks ie diarrhoea / constipation 4. Mass / Lump protruding at anal verge 5. Symptoms and signs of anaemia eg blood test shows iron deficiency / anaemia 6. Positive faecal occult blood test 7. Faecal urgency - urge to defecate without relief 8. Faecal incontinence 9. Pain at / or discharge from anus 10. Pain at / or discharge / or lump in natal cleft

Skin Cancer (melanoma) Melanoma is one of the most common forms of skin cancer and refers to a mole that may change with time and have the potential to become cancerous (malignant melanoma). The vast majority of moles remain benign (non-cancerous) but a small number may change size, colour, become itchy, bleed or hurt and should be examined immediately by a Doctor if this is the case. Once the mole is observed it should be removed properly so it can be thoroughly examined for cancer. Most moles removed turn out to be fine, but please visit your Doctor if you have a mole that’s causing any sign of problems. DR SHAMEEK POPAT

What is Mouth CanCer aCtion Month? Mouth Cancer Action Month is a charity campaign which aims to raise awareness of mouth cancer and make a difference by saving thousands of lives through early detection and prevention. Throughout November we will be aiming to get more mouth cancers diagnosed at an early stage by increasing education of the risk factors and signs and symptoms while encouraging everybody to discuss them with their dental professional. Most cases of mouth cancer are linked to tobacco and alcohol. Cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking are the main forms of tobacco use in the UK. However, the traditional ethnic habits of chewing tobacco, betel quid, gutkha and paan are particularly dangerous. Alcohol increases the risk of mouth cancer, and if tobacco and alcohol are consumed together the risk is even greater. Over-exposure to sunlight can also increase the risk of cancer of the lips. Many recent reports have linked mouth cancer to the human papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is the major cause of cervical cancer and affects the skin that lines the moist areas of the body. HPV can be spread through oral sex, and research now suggests that it could soon rival smoking and drinking as one of the main causes of mouth cancer. Practicing safe sex and limiting the number of partners you have may help reduce your chances of contracting HPV. Mouth cancer can appear in different forms and can affect all parts of the mouth, tongue and lips. Mouth cancer can appear as a painless

mouth ulcer that does not heal normally. A white or red patch in the mouth can also develop into a cancer. It is important to visit your dentist if these areas do not heal within three weeks. Mouth cancer can often be spotted in its early stages by your dentist during a thorough mouth examination. If mouth cancer is recognised early, then the chances of a cure are good. Many people with mouth cancer go to their dentist or doctor too late. The dentist examines the inside of your mouth and your tongue with the help of a small mirror. Remember, your dentist is able to see parts of your mouth that you cannot see easily yourself. If your dentist finds something unusual they will refer you to a consultant at the local hospital, who will carry out a thorough examination of your mouth and throat. A small sample of the cells may be gathered from the area (a biopsy), and these cells will be examined under the microscope to see what is wrong.

If the cells are cancerous, more tests will be carried out. These may include overall health checks, blood tests, x-rays or scans. These tests will decide what course of treatment is needed. If mouth cancer is spotted early, the chances of a complete cure are good, and the smaller the area or ulcer the better the chance of a cure. However, too many people come forward too late, because they do not visit their dentist for regular examinations. So Please visit your Dentist regularly so that they can check for signs for Mouth Cancer. It is important to visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend, even if you wear dentures. This is especially important if you smoke and drink alcohol. When brushing your teeth, look out for any changes in your mouth, and report any red or white patches, or ulcers, that have not cleared up within three weeks. When exposed to the sun, be sure to use a good protective sun cream, and put the correct type of barrier cream on your lips. A good diet, rich in vitamins A, C and E, provides protection against the development of mouth cancer. Plenty of fruit and vegetables help the body to protect itself, in general, from most cancers. Cut down on your smoking and drinking Have a Good November and looking forward to next month.

Beat the winter blues... Boost your happiness this winter any people experience feelings of sadness, depression and lethargy once the winter months kick in, often due to the change in weather, the shorter days and long periods of being cooped up indoors. If the winter blues are starting to set in, check out these ways to boost your happiness this winter.

M

Make a plan The winter months can often seem quite dull, with many of us spending the majority of our time stuck indoors. A good way to alleviate this feeling of ennui is to break out of your routine and create something to look forward to. This could be a night out or weekend away, or something ongoing like a new fitness challenge. Whatever your plan, make sure it is something you feel excited about and that you can focus on and look forward to. Get creative about fitness Exercise is a great way to beat the blues as it releases mood-boosting endorphins and will also leave you looking great. However, many of us find our workout routine takes a hit when the cold weather sets in. To stay inspired to exercise through the winter months, try searching for something new such as an unusual exercise class or sport. If you can’t face heading out into the cold, find fun ways to exercise at home such as dance fitness DVDs. Get an indoor hobby We often give up or postpone many of the activities we love when it gets cold. However, just because you are spending more time indoors, that doesn’t mean your interests and activities have to be reduced to browsing the TV guide for what’s on next. To keep your mind occupied and add some fun to your evenings, try taking up an indoor hobby for the winter. There are many to choose from, such as reading, writing, painting, growing indoor plants, baking or learning a new language. Eat mood-boosting foods It is tempting to reach for comforting, stodgy foods during the winter; however, research reveals that regular consumers of fast food are 51% more likely to develop depression. Instead, try to fill your diet with nutritious healthy foods; particularly those rich in B vitamins, which help the brain produce serotonin; Omega-3 fatty acids, which can help lift depression; and vitamin D, which you may be short of in the winter months. Perk up your social life As some people retreat more indoors to the warmth of their homes, it can feel as though your social life has gone into hibernation, expect it is Christmas! Spending time with others can be one of the greatest mood boosters. You can’t always rely on other people to make plans, so if your social life could do with a boost, it’s time to get pro-active. Pick up the phone and make plans to spend time with friends and family. Alternatively, take up 62

NOVEMBER2014

a hobby or join a club to find some new people to spend time with. Laugh more often Laughter is an extremely effective mood booster, and studies have found that even the anticipation of laughter can help to lift our spirits and reduce stress. However, many of us don’t laugh nearly enough. While it may seem like a regimented approach to such a laid back and seemingly frivolous activity, try to make sure you dedicate at least 20 minutes a day to something that makes you laugh, such as chatting to a friend, reading a funny book or watching a funny DVD. Lighten up For many people, the lack of sunlight over the winter months can bring on strong feelings of depression and lethargy. To help improve these symptoms, try to make sure you spend as much time exposed to natural light as you can, leaving your curtains or blinds open, sitting close to windows where possible, and spending some time outdoors each day. It may also be worth investing in a SAD light box which can help to reduce the negative effects caused by the lack of natural light. Make someone smile It is easy to get bogged down in our problems and fixated on our own bad mood, so it is good every once in a while to put our own issues to one side and focus on making someone else happy instead. Whether you want to take on some volunteer work, make a one off donation (of time or money) to charity or make someone you know smile with a thoughtful gift or gesture, dedicating time and effort to the happiness of others is a great way to get take your mind off your own problems and also increase your sense of purpose and fulfillment. Become a problem solver Many of us fall into the trap of spending a lot of time moaning over or rehashing our problems, but very little time trying to think of ways to solve them. If there is something more than the weather getting you down, try to think about what that is and what you can do about it. Make a list of all the things you would like to change about your life right now and jot down some solutions, then make a plan to tackle each thing one by one, starting with the thing most integral to your happiness. Treat yourself To boost your happiness over the winter, it is important to make time for those little things that boost your mood. Make a list of the day-to-day things that make you happy – such as having a catch-up with a friend, having a scented bubble bath, or listening to your favourite song – and make sure you schedule one of these treats into every day. Planning regular treats not only gives you something to look forward to, it can also subtly improve each day.

f there’s one thing that will stop you puckering up with your other half, it’s a nasty cold sore on your lip. They may be small and often barely noticeable to others - but to the sufferer they can seem huge, and very obvious. The reality is, however, that if sufferers were brave enough to go on their dates, their partners would probably sympathise, as the Herpes Viruses Association (HVA) estimate that by the age of 25, 60% of people will have become infected with the herpes simplex (HSV) type 1 virus that most commonly causes cold sores. HOW DO YOU CATCH THEM?

The virus is very much a kissing disease, passed on by mouth-to-mouth from someone who has a cold sore on their face. “It’s skin contact with friction, so you’re more likely to catch a cold sore off somebody if it’s a long kiss, rather than just a peck on the lips,” says Nigel Scott of the HVA. However, as the virus is fragile and dies very quickly when it’s off the skin, it’s only caught by direct skin contact. So there’s no need to worry about sharing cups or towels with sufferers. It can also be killed by water, or getting too hot or cold. Not all people infected with HSV will develop cold sores as a result, say experts. In fact, only around a quarter of carriers will ever experience symptoms. “You can catch it and never get symptoms,” says Scott. “Or there could be a trigger at any stage of your life and you get a cold sore.” WHAT ARE THE TRIGGERS?

Once you’ve caught HSV, it hides in nerve sheaths and can be reactivated by various situations, including tiredness, illness, stress, being run-down, menstruation, too much alcohol or the ultraviolet rays from sunbeds or sunlight. Some people can have recurrent outbreaks as often as once a month. Scott says: “If your mouth and lips get very sore if you do something like eat a very scratchy French loaf, if you get very run-down, or something upsets 64

KISS THOSE COLD SORES

GOODBYE AFTER 80% OF COLD SORE SUFFERERS ADMITTED THEY’VE CANCELLED DATES DUE TO OUTBREAKS, EXPERTS EXPLAIN WHY THE NASTY MOUTH SORES OCCUR AND HOW TO DEAL WITH THEM. BY LISA SALMON your immune system - any of these things can act as triggers. “The immune system would normally keep this virus suppressed, but if it’s really stretched with something else, sometimes it doesn’t quite manage.” HOW DOES IT FEEL?

There will be an itchy, tingly feeling on or near the lip when a cold sore is developing, and perhaps a feeling of pressure. This is the time to treat the area, as at this stage it’s possible to stop the cold sore developing, says Scott.

If left untreated, the itchy feeling develops into a small red patch, then a blister, which bursts and heals into the classic cold sore scab, normally lasting around a week. Sores tend to appear where you’ve been kissed, although they can occasionally recur anywhere on the face. In general, the virus prefers the moist skin that lines the lips, mouth and nose. TREATMENT

The HVA says the best way to avoid cold sores is to look after

yourself, and those who are prone to them should steer clear of any potential triggers. GP Dr Phil Hammond, a patron of the HVA, warns that exposure to bright sunlight, which can trigger a cold sore outbreak, is a particular risk for skiers at this time of year, and advises them to use a good sun block. “A few unlucky people seem to get frequent repeat outbreaks sometimes triggered by stress, poor diet, lack of sleep or exposure to bright sunlight,” he says. “A long-term course of antiviral tablets can deal with this.” Aciclovir, a medication used to treat a variety of viral infections including cold sores, shingles and chickenpox, is commonly prescribed to sufferers, and some aciclovir creams can be bought over the counter at pharmacies. Other cold sore treatments include using a herbal cream made with lemon balm, or a liquorice balm, which can help reduce the severity and duration of outbreaks. Medical nutritionist and former GP Dr Sarah Brewer says liquorice extracts stimulate immunity by increasing production of the antiviral substance ‘interferon’. “When applied to the lips, it suppresses the production of viral proteins needed to keep the herpes virus in its latent state, so they’re less likely to cause an eruption,” she says. “When applied to a sore, it promotes more rapid destruction of infected cells.” FIGHT THOSE COLD SORES

The Herpes Viruses Association has these suggestions for sufferers... • Start treatment as soon the characteristic tingling starts. • Apply well-wrapped ice for 90 minutes to cool the area. • Use over-the-counter creams. • Apply cold, used teabags to the sore every hour. • Use tea tree oil or geranium oil to help speed healing. • Keep the sore moist so it doesn’t crack with a dab of Vaseline. • See your doctor for antiviral tablets if you have recurrent outbreaks.

YOU MAY HAVE NOTED MORE HAIRY FACED MEN WANDERING AROUND THAN USUAL THIS MONTH! THEY ARE MO BROS, MEN WHO ARE GROWING ALL SORTS OF SCULPTED MOUSTACHES DURING THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER TO RAISE FUNDS AND AWARENESS REGARDING THE PERILS OF TESTICULAR CANCER. IT IS AN INTERNATIONAL EVENT WHICH HAS BEEN GOING FOR THE LAST FEW YEARS SUCCESSFULLY RAISING SUBSTANTIAL FUNDS FOR A VERY WORTHY CAUSE AROUND THE WORLD. Testicular Cancer is most common in younger men with over half of cases being in the under 35's. It is the most common cancer in men aged between 15-44. There are over 2,000 new cases a year in this country. The good news however is that 95 percent of people are cured, even if men present once the cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Treatment involves removing the testicle and then chemotherapy. This chemotherapy has transformed the survival rate for this form of cancer in recent years. Factors that make testicular cancer more likely is if there is a family history of it. It is more common in people from Northern Europe and can be related to having undescended testicles as a child. It is not correct that having a Vasectomy increases the risks. So gentleman get checking! 66

NOVEMBER2014

Start examining yourselves and become familiar with your own body so that you can identify anything new. It can be confusing as there is a swelling at the back of the testicle called the Epidymis which is quite normal. There are also many common innocent swellings around the testicle such as cysts, varicose veins and Hernia's. So remember not every swelling is serious. However if in any doubt get it checked. Here at Doctornow we would rather check fifty normal testes if it means we pick up one that is abnormal. If we have any doubts we can arrange an ultrasound test which is simple and not painful and there are specific bloods tests available at Doctornow if any doubts persist.

How to avoid being forced to replace replacement windows

avoid any nasty surprises in the future, it is “ Totherefore important before ordering replacement

Sadly, many UK property owners are not conversant with the Building Regulations, which come into force the moment any homeowner decides to replace any door or window, or indeed if creating a new builders opening or adding an extension. To avoid any nasty surprises in the future, it is therefore important before ordering replacement windows or doors that property owners get clued up on what they can and cannot do if and when replacing doors or windows. Nowadays, trying to sell a property without proof that new products added to a dwelling fully comply with the Building Regulations, can not only slow down the sale, but potentially jeopardize it and certainly will reduce what a purchaser is willing to pay. Proof that a new window or door complies with the current Building Regulations is provided either by your local council’s Building Control Department (i.e. when having an extension or creating a new builders opening after having obtained Building Regulatory Approval from your local authority ) or by obtaining a FENSA certificate if replacing 68

NOVEMBER2014

windows or doors that property owners get clued up on what they can and cannot do if and when replacing doors or windows.

windows or doors using a FENSA registered installer. FENSA is the Government authorised Competent Persons Scheme for the replacement of windows, doors and roof lights in England and Wales. So, to avoid the unnecessary expense of being forced to replace new replacement windows and doors by your local authority’s Building Control Officer, it makes sense to ensure that both the products you have fitted, and your installer comply with the FENSA regulations. To avoid having the wool pulled over your eyes by a replacement double glazing installer looking to cut corners, here are some of the key facts you need to know before ordering new doors or windows.

p68-BUCKS-HAZLEMERE__ 14/11/2014 09:20 Page 2

&

h ouse ga rd en

• You/your installer are not permitted to lesson ventilation. For example, if your existing windows and doors have trickle vents, your replacement products must also have these fitted. • You/your installer are not permitted to reduce the overall amount of opening vents in any window. For example, you are not allowed to replace an opening window with a fixed one, nor replace a full height side opening casement window with for example an opening fanlight over a fixed pane. • You/your installer MUST ensure that all replacement windows in all habitable rooms are fitted with emergency egress with “an unobstructed openable area that is at least 0.33 square metres and at least 450mm high and 450mm wide.” • Emergency egress “windows should be designed such that they will remain in the open position without needing to be held in position by the person during their escape.” • You/your installer MUST be able to prove that the replacement

windows you fit can achieve a minimum of an energy rating of “C” or have a maximum combined U-Value of 1/6 W/m2K. • You/your installer MUST fit toughened safety glass in all windows that are within 800mm of the internal floor level or within 300mm of any external door. • You/your installer MUST fit toughened safety glass in all replacement doors and in all bathroom windows that are adjacent to a bath or shower. • You/your installer MUST fit a door to the principle entrance to a dwelling with a clear opening width of 775mm to any extension or new build home. “The clear opening width is taken from the edge of the frame on the latch side to the face of the door leaf when open at 90 degrees.” • You/your installer MUST fit a low threshold to the principle entrance door of an new home or extension. And if replacing a door “when the outgoing door is compliant with new build requirements the replacement shall also be complaint.” • Except for kitchens all habitable rooms in the ground storey should either: a) open directly onto a hall leading to the entrance or other suitable exit, or b) be provided with a window (or door) which complies with the Fire Safety requirements.set out in the Building Regulations. It is therefore wise to select an experienced FENSA registered installer to assist you in designing your replacements doors and windows to ensure that they fully comply with the current Building Regulations. The cost of having to replace brand new replacement windows and doors that do not comply will be far higher and disruptive than paying a bit more to install compliant products well fitted by tried and trusted FENSA registered double glazing suppliers.

If you would like free expert help and advice on replacement windows or doors, or a free no obligation quotation, contact independent double glazing designers, manufacturers and installers Hazlemere Window Company (FENSA registered No. 10589) 01494 854266 or visit www.hazlemere.co.uk for more information. The Café owners, Carly and Ian, decided to carry out a complete makeover to their original design and all of the refurbishment was carried out to their specific strict deadlines over a period of approximately 8 days; all of the work was done at night. The result was a superb refit and the local residents didn’t miss out on the wonderful selection of beverages and quality food prepared by their Jamie Oliver-trained chef, so there was Tiffin by day and Tiffin by night. EcoTiffin were able to keep Carly and Ian happy by producing a professional refurbishment during the small hours, allowing the Café to open every morning, so 74

that there was no interruption to service and not a single latte was missed. Few families can boast such a long and colourful history, as Tiffin records show that “Tiffin” was established in 1695 after a member of the Tiffin family invented a compound to eliminate bed bugs that was so successful a thriving business soon developed. The company enjoyed royal patronage as “Insect Destroyer to Their Majesties” George II, III and IV and to Queen Victoria. More recently, in the 1930s, timber treatment was added to Tiffin’s services and in the 1940-50s the treatment of dry and wet rot and further developments in damp-proofing skills. In 1965 and 1974 Tiffin’s acquired two long-established building companies and with these acquisitions the Tiffin Group was able to offer a complete building and general property care service as well as its traditional preservation skills. Later in the 1980s and 2000, Tiffin added their cellar seal service, providing waterproofing to underground cellars and vaults, a Corporate Care Service to international companies with their own property portfolios and

programmed Term Maintenance Service. Tiffin is a long-established company and a recognisable brand in the field of quality building refurbishment and modernisation for the domestic client. With an unparalleled 320 years of experience behind them, their focus today is on professionalism and their specialisation in: • Refurbishment and Modernisation • Extensions and conversions • Maintenance and repair • Painting and decorating THEY ARE ALSO EXPERTS IN THE FIELDS OF:

7I N TOF THE BEST E R I O R D E S I G N T R E N DS ny proud homeowner knows that keeping your home looking its best is just as important as keeping yourself wellgroomed. Redecorating your entire property can be costly in both time and funds, but subtle nods to the latest trends in interior design keep things looking and feeling fresh.

A

Here are the key interior trends for 2014 that you may want to think about incorporating: TREND 1 TURQUOISE The pastels and beiges of previous seasons are being firmly placed to one side as 2014 sees us embracing richer jewel tones. Turquoise is undoubtedly the must-have colour of the year; if you don’t want to commit to a full feature wall in the colour, then consider adding some accessories such as cushions, throws or rugs to bring in the trend. Be sure to choose shades that are rich as opposed to more subtle tones this look is all about opulence. TREND 2 MIXING TEXTURES The fashion world saw an explosion of texture in 2013 as quilted fabrics and leather became big news. In 2014, this trend seeps into the world of interior design. Leather cushions can be mixed with corduroy throws to add interest to your sofa, or add some excitement to the bedroom with blends of fur and satin. The key is to mix your textures to create an eclectic feel. TREND 3 SHEER DRAPES If you have read our blog post on how to make apartments look bigger, then you will know that light is an essential to making the most of your space. Luckily, in 2014 one of the most fashionable things you can do for your dwelling is to open up the space around your window by replacing heavy curtains with light, sheer fabrics. Choose sheer curtains 76

NOVEMBER2014

or simply pick up some fabric from a local market to drape over your curtain pole for a casual, bohemian look. TREND 4 OPULENT KITCHENS Minimalist kitchens were the height of interior fashion a few years ago, but simplicity takes a back seat in 2014 as glamour arrives on the menu. Don’t get glamour confused with gaudiness, however; this look is all about decorative, Eastern-inspired lighting, sparkling metals such as brass, and richly painted wood. Some quirky accessories such as ornate kettles and teapots add the perfect finishing touches for this trend. TREND 5 VINTAGE PIECES Tying in with the luxury that the other trends encompass, this season your home accessories should all have flair and originality. The best way to do this is by picking up vintage, one-off pieces that nobody else is likely to have A vintage armoire or chaise longue are the ultimate statement pieces, but you can also achieve the look with smaller items such as a vintage clock on the mantelpiece or some vintage movie posters. TREND 6 TRANSPARENT FURNITURE Certainly not a trend for the faint-hearted, in 2014 acrylic furniture is going to become big news in interiors. Fans of minimalism will adore the added space and light that transparent chairs and tables allows for in a room, while fashionistas will love the retro feel that it creates. If you’re not quite brave enough to go for full acrylic, then transparent legs on sofas or tables will create the same effect, though more subtly. TREND 7 HEXAGONS In 2014, things get very edgy. In fact, the more edges the better. Things that were traditionally square in shape – think tiles, tabletops and mirrors – are given a modern twist by appearing in hexagonal form.

to the glowing recommendations of our customers. We understand the importance of complete customer satisfaction and pride ourselves on our excellent customer services. “On the recommendation of our plumber, we asked Ebberns to help us with producing a drawing and list of materials for our two bathrooms to be refurbished. Ian came round to the house to measure and came up with a scaled computer image of each bathroom which he subsequently filled with the units we chose. It was so

helpful to see such a wide selection of baths, showers, toilets, and heated towel rails in the show room. A trip to Ebberns tile centre with a sample of our furniture made choosing tiles so much easier, their suggestion to have under floor heating was perfect. The overall result exceeded our expectations and we really enjoy our bathrooms especially now the weather is getting colder. The timing on the underfloor heating thermostat works a treat.” Chris & Jennifer Ponting

fine quality tiles CAVERSHAM TILES Caversham Tiles is a family owned and run retailer of Ceramic and Porcelain Wall and Floor Tiles, with over 30 years experience in the industry. Two further showrooms Wokingham Tiles and Altwood Tiles in Maidenhead have been successfully opened in recent years. Altwood Tiles also has a special order showroom, showcasing many individual and exclusive ranges which have proved very popular with the public and interior designers alike. Caversham Tiles imports porcelain and ceramic tiles from the world’s finest manufacturers in Spain and Italy, and has a well stocked warehouse and distribution centre with most products available on a next day basis. Once confined to just bathrooms and kitchens, glazed ceramic and porcelain tiles are now versatile and safe enough for a whole host of uses inside and outside the home, including floors, walls, splash backs, worktops, porches and pathways. Modern porcelain and ceramics are robust enough to stand up to all the challenges of modern living, whether it’s messy kids, muddy pets or even careless adults. Innovative production techniques mean that porcelain tiles can now imitate stone, limestone, marble and even wood flooring with none of the costly and time-consuming maintenance that natural products demand. Porcelain is also extremely hardwearing, so cannot easily be damaged, and will stay beautiful for many years with very little effort. Water spills, dirt, bleach and strong cleaners are all easily wiped away with absolutely no risk of damage. Another very popular range is the 80

traditional style Victorian Tiles, which have been very popular with customers living in period properties. The intricate designs are surprisingly made up from the basic shapes of square, rectangle, triangle, hexagon, octagon and trapezium. By using a mixture of plain colours and decorated tiles the combinations are endless. They can be used inside and out with stunning results. The displays in all three showrooms are all grouted and clearly lit to demonstrate exactly how the tiles will look once installed. Free loan of samples is available, to allow you to see how they would work in your home. Also available are high quality cleaning, sealing and maintenance products to keep your tiles in perfect condition, whether you have ceramics, porcelain or natural stone. There is even a range of anti-bacterial grouts for extra peace of mind! Caversham Tiles can cater for all budgets and styles, be it a simple splash back to a fully tiled wetroom, with heated floors and mirrors and touch control lighting systems to add a touch of luxury. The highly experienced staff at all three showrooms have been with the company for many years, and are all experts in the trade. They will be delighted to guide you every step of the way, assisting with calculating areas and planning your designs. Each showroom can recommend high quality local tradesmen to see your project through to completion. Beaconsfield’s hot shot I am sitting here today talking to the new hot shot in Beaconsfield, Photographer Jacqueline Ferguson. Jacqueline told me a little about why she opened Penn Road Studio, a bright, fresh, modern space adjacent to Waitrose in Beaconsfield New Town. “I was inspired to open my own photographic studio after many years of taking great images that were beautifully exposed, well composed and caught people in their most expressive moments. Turning something I am great at into a business seems like a sensible idea”. I asked her to tell me a little bit about when she first had the idea of opening up her studio. “I was walking my Shih-tzu, Monte, one afternoon and I spotted some space that I thought would be ideal for my studio. When I viewed the rooms I was easily able to visualise how I was going to make it. I did not employ a team of builders or an architect. I rolled up my sleeves and did it all myself. I got on my knees, pulled up the horrible carpets, stripped and painted the walls, floor and ceilings and have turned this area into a creative, modern environment. When you walk through the door all of the elements of the experience will be different to what you expect. That’s my aim.” “The studio is close to where I live in Beaconsfield yet well connected to London and this is important to me because I want my clients to be secure in the knowledge that I am up to date, that the environments and styles that I create are contemporary and fresh, offering new ideas to and old art form.” She continued “Rather than go to London for that current look my clients can enjoy the attention of someone who is actually from London and that has travelled extensively, but 82

NOVEMBER2014

living right here in Beaconsfield!” She assured me of the seriousness of this point to her creative influences. She wasn’t finished there though. “At Penn Road Studio you will sense new fragrances as you climb the stairs, great sounds to your ears, subtle flavours across your tongue as we share tea and the creative vision and look at some of my previous assignments. Finally your sense of touch can be satisfied as you handle the products that I make using your images. My experience as an holistic therapist helped me enormously with that aspect of my business.” “There are four different backdrops creating a very different and unique space. I am not trying to compete with what has gone before. So far we have had lots of families, people with their dogs have shown real interest. I have recently been asked to photograph horses but am not sure how I’m going to get them up the stairs!” After everyone has stopped laughing Jacqueline continued to tell us about this exciting time in her life: “There is some big news regarding my most recent commission which was with Her Majesty the Queen. My Mayfair connections led me to the opportunity of assisting one of the most eminent photographers in London and circumstances developed to such an extent that soon I was appointed the lead photographer rather than the second shooter. Five regiments of the Queens Royal Lancers were being amalgamated into one single battalion and this was the last chance for the Queen to meet with five Colonels of the Royal Lancers at one time, so it is an historic image that will not be repeated and the photograph will be presented to Her Majesty in due course and reproduced extensively

within the military world.” “Penn Road Studio was packaged up and transported en-mass to the Cavalry and Guards Club on Piccadilly. I was cool, calm and collected. I had prepared beforehand and when I arrived I set up the studio, knew how I wanted to take the shot, did all of the things a photographer needs to do and it was all plain sailing. The photos are amazing and she will in due course get to see them when she is presented with her framed copy by the attending Colonels.” “My unique selling point and one which was especially important to the client on the Royal assignment was that all of the images that I create and post produce are the property of the client and this is included within the cost of the arrangement” I asked her what that meant in day-to-day terms. “It gives the client the freedom to use the images in any way they wish, using first generation high resolution images on their social media, web sites, the prints for their walls and the mouse mat on their desk. The images are truly theirs to be used and enjoyed. This makes me quite unique as most other studios retain the rights to the images, they include perhaps just one single photograph and oblige their customers to buy the rest of the pictures, often at an inflated cost. My prices are affordable and full of value. I think that people will employ me because they want something that is a little different from the standard.” 1st Floor, 2b Penn Road, Beaconsfield HP9 2PD. With autumn moving swiftly towards winter with blustery days and darker nights, the menus at the Artichoke are full of wintry promise featuring wonderful game - partridge and venison in preparation for the arrival of pheasant. New autumnal flavours include salsify, curly kale, pearl barley, spelt and baby turnips. This time of year is a real joy for food lovers with ingredients overflowing. Fantastic root vegetables - carrots, swede and parsnips, always at their best after a cold frost, beetroot and our favourite the Jerusalem artichoke are now for the taking. It is time to prepare those winter pickles and preserves for the larder - pickled red cabbage and boozy homemade mincemeat

and to start using those comfort recipes braising, making warming soups and using winter spices and of course to make preparations for the festive season. Then there is the enjoyment to be had of seasonal citrus: Kumquats are like small oranges, only they are oval-shaped and the peel and seeds are edible these fruits are one of the bright spots during the darkest, chilliest time of the year. They are bit bitter but when they are cooked in a sweet syrup they are transformed into something pretty heavenly. Candied kumquats can be eaten alone, spooned into champagne, used to top Greek yogurt, vanilla ice cream or cheesecake. This recipe would also make a fabulous personable festive gift ladled in small jars tied with ribbon.

f Monaco and St Tropez are indeed among the world’s capitals of luxury, then this was to be the ultimate press trip exposé into lavish lavish liliving ving and indulgence. Arri riving ving from Gatwick with Monarch airlines (www.monarc (www.monarch.co.uk), we swooped down onto the sun-baked tar mac of Nice airport to be welcomed by Rumble Romagnoli, our host and director of luxury web marketing fir m Relevance (www.relev (www.relevanceweb.com).

We were instantly escorted to Monaco for the final day of the 24th edition of the Monaco Yac Yacht Show (www.monaco (www .monacoyachtshow.com). Bottles of champagne and expensivve entrées were liberally supplied and everywhere expensi visitors were cordially met with open ar ms. In particular Lisa Peck, the global marketing manager of Fraser Y Yac achts (www.fraser (www .fraseryachts.com), who welcomed us aboard four of their superyachts. We firstly visited the frankly outrageous 54m M/Y Sea Force One. Its sleek silver and black exterior did little to betray what lay on the inside: beyond a decadent lounge area with sumptuous décor, a neon lit living living area designed for lavish lavish parties that no pen can describe in writing writing.. Head humming from the giddy combination of Mediterranean heat and sparkling wine, we were fortunately offered a seat in the shaded terraces of the highly exclusi clusivve Yacht Club de Monaco for an exquisite buffet of gour met food ser ved in regal quantities (www.yac (www.yacht-club-monaco. mc). Not a moment was spared as we were soon once again upon the bustling ports of the Mediterranean principality and aboard the supreme 46.7m M/Y Lady Petra with its modern living living areas shared between a Jacuzzi and expansiv expansive lounge and dining decks. We We were also introduced to the high-perfor mance chase boat M/Y

YXT One and finally M/Y Ulysses, an altogether more traditional vessel with a neo-classical interior design across all the floors floors of its 56m body. body. Departing to the deafening roar of 150 superyacht horns ceremoniously signalling the exhibition’s end, we returned to Nice to dine on chef Jean Michel’s regional delicacies at the classy HANgoût restaurant, including an expertly rendered tender cut of beef beef.. Seven contented journalists, stomachs full, stumbled back to the comforts of luxury four star Hotel Aston La Scala, to enjoy drinks and spectacular views over the Place Masséna from the rooftop terrace and bar (www.hotel-aston.com). (www.hotel-aston.com). The following morning, a chauffeured driv drive along the Cote d’Azur lay ahead, finally ending at the enchanting gulf of St Tropez’s natural ter minus: the illustrious port of St Tropez. 28th September marked the second day of the famous ‘Les Voiles Voiles de St T Tropez’ ropez’ regatta

The host port is aliv alivee with the hum of celebrities mingling with billionaires in luxury beac beachside hside restaurants (www.lesvoilesdesaint-tropez.fr/en). Indeed everything is excess in the small port town, never more so itself. than on the day of the regatta itself. Steeped in history, we crossed the port’s ancient ramparts to soak in the view of the rows of moored racing yachts, before heading to Relais Chateaux’s ‘Pan Deï Palais’ (www.pandei.com). (www .pandei.com). The luxury hotel, a historic building itself,, was originally constr ucted by a French general in itself homage to the beautiful Princess Bannu Pan Deï, and provided pro vided a fittingly romantic and extrav extravagant setting for the final meal of our press trip. There was little antiquity to be admired in the fine four course meal we enjoyed there however. All of the dishes were irresistibly light and demonstrated the cunning of modern cuisine, with interesting and original fla lavvour combinations in the Sea Bream wrapped in banana leaf, leaf, the Tiger tear steak with sweet potato and ‘jus’, and the sublime blackberry soufflé soufflé accompanied by pear sorbet for dessert. There was scarcely time to sav savour the Pro Provvençal cuisine however as we were quickly whisked aboard a Grand Banks boat with the nautical equiv equivalent of front row seats for the thrilling regatta race. Chasing behind some of the

perfor mance sailing yachts in action, the unadulterated excitement of Les Voiles Voiles de Saint Tropez was almost tangible. The heady heights of spectating the race from the top deck’s sun drenched seats were soon to become heightened further still, as we shortly found ourselves looking down upon the famed ports of the French Riviera Riviera through the window of our return flight home. Thus concluding a wonderful weekend of luxury on the magical Cote d’Azur.
