Todd White, Hollywood’s artist to the stars, is jetting in from LA to launch ‘Whispered Words and Pretty Lies’, his new collection of artwork, at Whitewall Galleries in Stratford City.

Faye Manning Editor’s Assistant Katie Miller Sub Editor Alexandra Lux

Since White’s work was launched in the UK at the end of 2011 he has gone straight into the Top 10 Bestsellers List. Investors are snapping up his ultra-stylish avant-garde images which have won him an army of celebrity collectors including P Diddy, Sharon Stone, Catherine Zeta Jones, Vin Diesel, Hugh Hefner, Abbey Clancy, David Dunn and many more.

Fashion Editor Hazel Englander Design & Production Claire Stone Art Editor

Amongst his many achievements Todd is the artist of choice for the world’s most high profile showbiz events. His appointment as Official Artist to the GRAMMY® Awards, as Warner Bros’s invitation to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of ‘e Wizard of Oz’ on canvas (later bought by Sylvester Stallone) have cemented his position as the world’s most glamorous artist.

BLUEBELLS OF EPPING FOREST, WANSTEAD AND LOUGHTON Words: Michelle Harris

A

s mentioned in my column, the bluebells in Epping Forest are absolutely beautiful. However the best places are Chalet Wood, Wanstead Park and Strawberry Hill, Loughton. If interested in bluebells, please note there are several types. e familiar flower is called Hyacinthoides non-scripta, and is normally found in woodlands and hedges. Also there is a Spanish variety called 10

APRIL2012

Hyacinthoides hispanica normally found in gardens and the countryside. A third bluebell is a hybrid: Hyacinthoides x massartiana. If ‘out and about’ looking for bluebells, the following tips will help you to identify the different types. POLLEN – BY LOOKING AT THE POLLEN. Creamy-white – Bluebell is native. Any other colour, such as light green or blue - non-native. It is important to look at

FOLKLORE ABOUT BLUEBELLS ere is a superstition that anyone who walks in a ring of bluebells would be subject to ‘fairy enchantment’. Also that bluebells rang to summon fairies. However it would be extremely unlucky for a human to hear a bluebell! On a more positive note, some believed that if you wore a wreath made of these flowers, you could only speak the truth. Or optimistically, if you could turn one of the flowers inside out without any break or tear, you would win the heart of the one you love! To help celebrate these beautiful flowers, the City of London corporation has organised several events at e Temple, Wanstead Park. EXHIBITION: “OUT OF THE BLUE” – UNTIL 27TH MAY 2012 is exhibition comprises of miscellaneous themes around bluebells: images, artwork, folklore and also fairies. All aspects are linked to Wanstead’s bluebell, Chalet Wood. Free: Drop-in event. Time: 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. An art afternoon with local artist, Barbara Sampson. For those interested in painting, she will demonstrate simple techniques to help painters ‘capture’ the bluebells. Date: Sunday, 15th April Time: 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Free: Drop in event. Photography around the Forest Date: Sunday, 29th April Robert Good - Epping Forest’s Volunteer Photographer, will be heading this course Time: 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. Note: Please bring your

camera so you can photograph buildings, bluebells and wildlife. is event is particularly aimed at amateur photographers looking to improve their skills. BOOKING IS REQUIRED Telephone: 020 8508 0028 Visitor Services Manager, Tony Fenwick, said: “We’re really proud of the beautiful display our bluebells offer visitors at this time of the year, and we’re delighted to be celebrating this native flora with these great events.” For those who prefer to purchase items with a bluebell theme, rather than paint or procure themselves, a range of themed merchandise will be available from the Epping Forest Centre at e Temple in Wanstead Park, Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge in Chingford and the Visitor Centre at High Beach. If looking for a great family day out, the Queen Elizabeth’s Hunting Lodge is strongly recommended. Interesting from a cultural and historical perspective and also if on a sunny day, there are great walks nearby and places to enjoy an outdoor picnic. For further information on the

LOCAL LIFE

Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PROPERTY MARKET

H

aving spent most of my working life advising on property, it is hardly surprising that property is the first subject on the lips of all that I meet up with. In fact after enquiring after my health the next question asked is either “why the hell are you still working? ” or “how is the property market? ” and without waiting for a reply or even taking a breath they continue “ I hear it’s going up!” “you hear it’s going up? “ I reply – “Who’s been saying that?” “I read recently” – “Oh you read it, well then it must be right” I reply with more than a hint of sarcasm. is usually leads on to either my excusing myself and walking away or delivering a fifteen minute diatribe depending on either my mood or my relationship with my inquisitor. Forgive me if you were the person who suffered the diatribe but for the few who are left who have missed it – Now hear this! Despite the title of my monthly column THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PROPERTY MARKET . What we have is a collection of micro markets, each being separate and distinct from one another, and each micro market made up of districts and even specific roads, property styles and values that distinguish them in value with even these differing wildly depending on fashion related circumstances and periods in time. Apart from scanning through the Wednesday edition of the Evening Standard, which features a fine property section, the only newspaper I read is the weekend Financial Times. In the Easter edition the knowledgeable Ed Hammond related the amazing

LOUGHTON £1,195,000

CHIGWELL, CALL TO DISCUSS PRICE

anomaly concerning the enormous difference between property within and outside of the “golden triangle” in Central London, bordering the South East Corner of Hyde Park, bounded by Mayfair, Belgravia and Knightsbridge. ese tiny “villages”, for that is what they were some 200 years ago, have since 2008 according to the stats recorded by the Agents Knight Frank increased the number of nationalities purchasing within them from 28 Nations to last year’s figures of 64 Nations. In the last eleven weeks alone transactions rose to £723 millions from £365million during the same period in 2011. Needless to say property values here have increased due to supply and demand and after losing a quarter of its value at the start of 2008 it has now increased by 42%. is by comparison to the overall National housing market value which fell by 18% and has only recovered 7% of its value. Bear in mind of course that the UK figures are based on National average prices which at present stand just over £250,000 in Suburbia.

Don’t you now wish you had purchased in these areas instead of Leafy Essex? – Don’t we all. However, before hocking everything to do so, be warned. Foreign buyers are buying for a safe haven for their money. Should anything happen to demonstrate any fragility in the safety of our Country, they have no emotional attachment and will be off like a shot. Dumping their property at any price they can get and thereby hugely depreciating these inflated values. I have previously attempted to relate the falls of our LOCAL MARKET which as we all know differs wildly in pockets of price and position. In the main the 2003 boom roughly doubled the value of the previous decade. is reduced slightly in 2004 and 2005 and then returned to 2003 prices in 2007 with certain homes which were in greatest demand doing considerably better. With the exception of some homes under £500,000 which have shown little change, prices have reduced proportionately in line with values from anything between 10% at the bottom end to as much as 25% at the very top end. Regrettably there are still many owners who are in denial of these facts and to be fair for those who have spent huge sums in enlargement and improvement, have good reason to believe that the “right buyer” fully appreciating the added features, may well wish to ignore the facts and pay the premium being asked. Quite rightly taking the

view that this could be their family home for a generation or so, and thereby as long as it is affordable, price should be of secondary importance We are now entering prime selling and letting time and there is little sign so far of much new stock entering the markets. It is my view that little is going to change throughout the year, so if you are seriously looking to move now is as good a time as any. ose of you seeking to acquire a “very special house” are advised to contact me personally for as always there are several families known to me personally that could be “tempted to move” but reluctant to advertise their homes generally for “personal reasons”

CHIGWELL, CALL TO DISCUSS PRICE

A thought to consider is that the present situation favours those trading up, as this is where the best value can be achieved.

If you are suffering from the frustration of not finding your dream home, why not consider building it from scratch. ere are several opportunities to do this at the very top of the market, and I would be delighted to recommend the best architects and builders who could help bring your dreams to reality. CELEBRATING THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE IN ESSEX Words: Michelle Harris

O

n 29th March 2012 and for the first time in 10 years, Redbridge paid host to e Queen and e Duke of Edinburgh, visiting the local area as part of the Diamond Jubilee tour. Walking from Gants Hill to Valentine’s Park, the atmosphere was electric. Flags in shop windows, crowds of people gathering to talk about the event; speculation on e Queen’s attire; wondering when to arrive and the best place to stand; how and where to have a glimpse of the Royal couple… A beautiful, sunny and

18

APRIL2012

bright day, as spectators gathered in Valentines Park. ousands of local residents from Redbridge and surrounding areas, formed an excited crowd as everybody awaited the arrival. e Queen looked stunning in a turquoise suit and matching hat. e Duke of Edinburgh by her side, it was magnificent to see the Royal couple, relaxed and enjoying themselves, in our beautiful park. London Mayor Boris Johnson stood with Redbridge Council Leader Keith Price as the crowds cheered and waved their commemorative flags. Cameras were clicking,

children jumping up and down, applause and jubilation as she appeared looking radiant and happy. Standing near the Dry garden, where e Queen would be unveiling the plaque, I observed the VIPs, congregated in the appropriate enclosure. is garden is significant as the first major planting in the park since the Rose Garden in the 1870s. As part of the celebrations, e Queen’s visit was also part of the launching of the four-day London Pride Festival, also in Valentines Park and to celebrate art and design during e Queen’s sixty years on the throne. e exhibits, inside Valentines Mansion, include artwork from internationally revered British artists such as Francis Bacon, Lucien Freud, Howard Hodgkin and David Hockney. Also some small sculptures, on loan, from the Tate Gallery. Sir Terence Conran was appointed by the council, as the special advisor. Pat Milsone, who attended with her husband and grandchild, commented: “I’m over the moon. It’s a once in a lifetime event to see e Queen in your location. I follow everything with the Royal Family, and because of my age, have enjoyed all the main events important to the Royal Family.” Looking at her grandchild, she added, “A wonderful opportunity to share an event with my grandchild.” She looked very happy to share with her extended family. Nearby another family were cheering excitedly when e Queen appeared. Mr. and Mrs. Hartt from Chadwell Heath said, “It’s absolutely fantastic. ere should be more of these things. It makes you proud.” By coincidence, Mrs. Hartt’s eldest daughter, Amelia Hartt was representing her school, Our Lady of Lourdes. “All the children had to write a letter to the headmistress. Two

children from each class were selected from a hat and Amelia was lucky enough to get picked. Although she wouldn’t be meeting e Queen, she would be part of the crowd that would witness her drive into the park.” Mr. Hartt’s mother, was also with them, originally from Madrid, she has lived in England for 43 years. She was thrilled to be witnessing the event and with her children and grandchildren. “Very memorable day” she said as she nodded and smiled. “Wonderful to share with my grandchild.” e whole family were clearly, very proud. Talking about the Silver Jubilee, Mrs. Hartt recollected: “We also celebrated in 1977 and therefore with the whole family. We follow the Royal Family who we feel, do a great deal for the country.” A great morning was enjoyed by all, visitors, participants, onlookers and those who just popped into the park to enjoy the revelry. A truly splendid day that ran to military precision; the whole event felt relaxed and almost like a Bank Holiday but with e Queen, as the regal highlight. On the way back, I picked up the local newspaper from a vendor and talked with a shop owner about the historic visit. Everybody felt part ‘of it’. Everything was perfect and even the weather was glorious. THE QUEEN’S LAST TRIP TO REDBRIDGE WAS IN 2002 e Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Allotment Project in Redbridge Lane West, Wanstead And Before that - Queen Elizabeth II first came to Redbridge when she visited a modern block of flats at an Ilford Housing Estate in 1949. On this occasion she was still Princess Elizabeth ■

uckhurst Hill and in particular, Queens Road has improved over the years due to the active involvement and participation of the Buckhurst Hill Residents Society. e Society has been in existence for nearly fifty years and their mission is to ensure that Buckhurst Hill retains its unique charm and character, so that Buckhurst Hill, is a pleasant and attractive place to live. e Society achieves its mission by regularly informing and lobbying on behalf of the local residents and also donates money to local charitable causes. e results of their good work are evident – a wonderful and beautiful area plus the outstanding main high road: Queens Road – a popular and very pleasant respite from the stresses and strains of daily life. Buckhurst Hill was first mentioned in 1135, when it was referred to as ‘La Bocherste’, then ‘Bucket Hill’. Originally, the area consisted of just a few houses from Woodford to Loughton, and it was a stage route before the railways. e Parish Church of St. John was built in 1838 (as a chapel of ease) but became an ecclesiastical parish in 1867. Today, Buckhurst Hill consists of beautiful properties, elegant roads, quiet, peaceful and a great area for families of all ages. Good schools and easy access to Holly House, private hospital – Buckhurst Hill’s amenities and position near to London, make it a prime choice for those wanting to be near London, but far away enough to feel like, life in the suburbs. ere is so much to enjoy in Queens Road which also has a full range of beauty facilities for hair and manicures. isitors to Epping’s Coopersale Hall School came from far and wide to the recent ‘School in Action’ Open Morning. Alongside more local families from areas such as Epping, North Weald and eydon Bois, were the slightly further-travelled families from Old Harlow, Woodford, Canary Wharf and Chigwell. Admissions Registrar Sally Potter commented, “ere’s been a real trend over the last few years of families travelling to us due to our outstanding reputation for excellence. Parents are choosing Coopersale Hall for our proven expertise in helping children get to their first choice of senior school at 11+ and they don’t seem to mind an extra 5 minutes journey time for this chance to provide their children with an excellent start to their education.” A number of parents who visited Coopersale Hall for the first time were surprised at how close the School is to Epping town centre just one mile from the station at the top of its 450m private road next to Epping Golf Course. Prospective parents were impressed by the extensive facilities that include the new classroom blocks, sports fields, large astroturf pitch and playgrounds, together with the specialist ICT Suite and Music/Dance Studio. Deputy Head Sarah Watson was full of praise for the Year 6 pupils who acted as guides for the morning. She said, “ey are so proud of Coopersale Hall and really look forward to showing people around. ese pupils have achieved a spectacular set of 11+ exam results as they all achieved their first choice senior schools and three awarded scholarships.” During the Open Morning one parent said, “I really enjoyed meeting your French teacher, who seems so enthusiastic!” Headmistress Kaye Lovejoy agreed, “We teach French from a very early age – it is one of the children’s favourite lessons. Monsieur Goodman is one of many specialist teachers who get fantastic results from his highly engaging teaching methods.” Group Principal Matthew Hagger stated, “Parents are quite right in choosing to budget for independent education for their children – there can be no better investment. With the widely-reported surge in birth rates in this area, places at all our schools are becoming more and more oversubscribed. As well as the families travelling from further afield, children are frequently joining us from the state sector. Working families are also especially pleased by extensive range of before and after school clubs that help to extend the school day.”

JACK IS PICTURED WITH YOUNG PEOPLE FROM THE PETCHEY ACADEMY, SCOUTS AND THE ACHIEVER’S NETWORK.

YOUNG PEOPLE’S CHAMPION RECEIVES CBE

E

ast End philanthropist Jack Petchey received his CBE at a special ceremony at the Great Hall, Kensington on Friday 16th March. Rather than the traditional presentation at Buckingham Palace, where he received his OBE in 2004, Jack chose to share this prestigious occasion with 150 young people also receiving awards for their achievements at one of the annual Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Award celebrations. Jack, aged 86, received his award from Sir David Brewer, Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London, in a rather unique investiture. Sir David Brewer said this is only the second CBE honour he has been asked to present on behalf of HM Queen Elizabeth.

24

APRIL2012

Jack, who received his award for charitable services, wanted to accept the honour on behalf of the many youth and youth leaders who work tirelessly to set an example to others. He also wanted to recognise the role that Scouting played in his own development and the influence on his life and the lives of thousands of others. Jack wanted the young people to be able to share in a part of British culture that many are unlikely to see and also to know that Achievement is a lifelong process! Richard Walker-Amot, Deputy Lieutenant for Kensington & Chelsea, read a citation in recognition of the impact the Foundation has had on young people throughout London and Essex since it was founded by Jack Petchey in 1999. ese included Jack’s OBE

in 2004; over 2,000 youth organisations share in the Achievement Awards scheme; 65,000 young people have received awards; the Petchey Academy, which opened in 2007; the Speak Out Challenge and Step Into Dance programmes; the annual Panathalon competition; Learn to Earn and Out of School Hours Learning initiatives; the TS Jack Petchey training ship for the Marine Society and Sea Cadets and £6 million funding support for uniformed organisations. ese were described as outstanding contributions by Jack Petchey in seeking to make a difference. After being made a Commander of the British Empire Jack Petchey said “ank you to everyone who has helped me on my way, particularly to the Scouts who

80 years ago taught me to do a good deed every day. It’s a marvellous organisation and I couldn’t have had a better training for life, but they are very short of adult volunteers. I believe we all need support. I think the Jack Petchey Foundation gives much more than money, it gives support, encouragement and inspiration to our youth. It’s nice to receive an honour and the acknowledgement that goes with it – I feel very proud indeed” Jack is clear that “it is not about the money, more importantly it is about inspiring young people, help them believe in themselves and know that if they think they can – they can!”

AFTER BEING MADE A COMMANDER OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE JACK PETCHEY SAID “THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HAS HELPED ME ON MY WAY, PARTICULARLY TO THE SCOUTS WHO 80 YEARS AGO TAUGHT ME TO DO A GOOD DEED EVERY DAY. Over the years Jack has become known by young people as their “champion” since he founded his Foundation to recognise the positive contributions young people make to society and to support them in achieving their potential. e Foundation has invested well over £70 million in a wide range of youth initiatives including grass roots youth clubs, youth organisations, secondary schools and uniformed organisations throughout London and Essex. SPRING, GARDENING AND BACKACHE A Words: Michelle Harris

s spring beckons and we prepare our homes and gardens for sunshine and outside entertainment, the first priority is… getting the garden ready! is feature is my own experience. Also covered this month, is an article on Epping Forest's, beautiful bluebells. Most of the properties in premier locations in Essex, benefit from either gardens or even significant land area. My own home has a garden, which affords me some personal, quiet, outside space where I can enjoy being outdoors, savour a coffee whilst contemplating creative ideas. But before this respite can be enjoyed… the preliminary preparation for spring and summer is essential.

26

APRIL2012

e garage is opened, aired and the old faithful tools are again shown daylight. A bit of last year’s grass tucked in the undercarriage of the mower. Slight damp from a leaking roof has caused the shears to rust. I vaguely recall, needing to sort out certain things before winter, which were promptly forgotten when the garage was locked for the last time. So out come those weary tools. Wearing garden clothes and bracing myself for that gladiatorial task of mowing the lawn, cutting back, raking, weeding etc., I feel threatened. Daunted by the physical exertion that could potentially, break my back. My garden feels very big as I contemplate all that is necessary. Looking

at the sad tools, I contemplate the arduous task and wonder… where’s the gardener’s telephone number? A delicious cup of tea would be a good start. So back in the kitchen, I put on the kettle and try to gain some incentive from this medicinal hot beverage. I take it in the garden, seat on a chair and look around. Despite my inclination to call a gardener, the memories return: the copious amounts of tea, preferably on an hourly basis. Also gardener’s teas are generally associated with a quick chat. As you hand over the mug there’s no quick getaway… you find yourself drawn into a conversation about your garden. is can take 10 minutes… So if I’m writing, the stream of consciousness has gone, my creative flow thwarted and it is impossible to return back to a plot, the writing of a feature, or strategy for a website. Plus of course, gardeners aren’t reliable time-keepers. You wait in – they don’t turn up. Looks like rain. Delay from last job. In one case, was told he’d need to bring his dog. So as I recall why I vowed to do the garden myself, with renewed enthusiasm and vigour, I take that lawn mower, empty out last year’s grass, mud and dirt, plug it in, and reluctantly it shakes and rattles, then miraculously comes alive. Together, we attempt straight lines, which

are actually quite wonky. Too much grass for the black box (don’t know what it’s called), so out comes the rake. With venomous resolve, I am determined to Rake at Garden. Back begins to twinge, need a cup of tea. Sit back on the garden chair. Contemplate a chapter in my new book, development of a character. Perhaps a bikkie or two to enhance the sugar levels – then Black and Decker and I make more wonky lines in the lawn. More raking, some weeding, some cutting here and there. A snip, a chop, another rake…. Another cup of tea and perhaps a chocolate biscuit… I note it’s harder to get out of the garden chair. Lower backaches, my neck feels stiff, I have broken fingernails and rose bush scratches on my arms … I throw the tools back in the garage as I can now, barely walk. Result: Anybody know a gardener? I’ve got an urn in case they need gallons of hot water for their tea! And perhaps (when I’m better!) a trip to Epping Forest where I can appreciate the beauty of flowers in a natural setting – that didn’t break MY back, to achieve! ince the first ever London Marathon on 29th March 1981, the race has grown in size, stature and popularity ever since. Now established among the major events in the sporting calendar, the London Marathon is shown on television in more that 150 countries around the world. As a fundraising event, there is no race in the world that comes close to the London Marathon. Runners in the 2011 Virgin London Marathon set yet another record figure for charity fund raising when they collected £51.8 million for good causes at last year’s race , confirming the London Marathon as the largest annual one-day fund raising event in the world. With a similar total expected from this year’s runners, the total raised over 30 years since the first race in 1981 will reach more than £500 million! An iconic image of the event is the thousands of runners traipsing the streets to raise money for charity, many in fancy dress, hoping to stand out as a rhino, football mascot, giant tree, or escaped convict. More than three quarters of competitors now run for a good cause and a third of all entry places are offered by charitable organisations. In addition, over the last three decades the London Marathon

Weir is aiming to match the six London Marathon titles won by British Paralympic legend Dame Tanni Grey -ompson when he makes his 12th consecutive appearance in the race. Celebrities lined up to take part this year include: chefs Michel Roux, Gordon Ramsey, Tom Aiken and Tony Tobin, Will Young, DJ's Neil 'Doctor ' Fox, Mark Goodier and Charlie Hedges, Callum Best, Ben Fogle, Katie Price, Nadia Sawahla and EastEnders stars Danielle Harold and Neil McDermott. Some advice to those that wish to go along and support and cheer on the brave runners, many roads are closed on race day, so the best way to get around is using the London Underground, South Eastern and Docklands Light Railway (DLR), who lay on extra services especially. Remember, the trains will be busy all day – expect it to be like rush hour. You’ll probably have to queue at some stations and the tube lines may be forced to shut temporarily throughout the day to help ease the crowds. For more details go to www.virginlondonmarathon.com

BEACONS ON OUR STREETS

T

hey say God works in mysterious ways. Late one night, six years ago, Rev Wayne Dulson got so fed up with the noisy music, the shouting crowd and the brawling from nearby pubs and bars in Loughton High Road, he opened his bedroom window and yelled at them to stop. None of them took any notice of course! But it did start a chain of events which years later has become Loughton Street Pastors. “I didn’t realise it at the time but I had already come across Street Pastors” said Rev Wayne Dulson who is Minister at Loughton Baptist Church. “It had embedded itself in my mind somewhere but once I read Rev Les Issack’s book, the founder of the idea, it quickly took hold even if it did take years to come to fruition.” Street Pastors is an inter-denominational Church response to urban problems, engaging with people on the streets to care, listen and chat. It was pioneered in London in January 2003 by Rev Les Isaac, Director of the Ascension Trust. e scheme has seen some remarkable results, including drops in crime in areas where teams have been working. ere are now some 9,000 trained volunteers and nearly 250 teams around the United Kingdom. In order to get started each

32

APRIL2012

city project must have commitment from at least four local churches, the Police, the local authority and other agencies and funding. Once it is sanctioned by the Ascension Trust, which also provides training, the call goes out to enlist interest from volunteers to make up teams our four people to patrol the streets offering practical help and support. ey are backed up with a prayer support team of at least three people. Rev Dulson had followed up his rant from the window with a proposal to local churches to come together but at the time it was not considered viable. Since then incidents and malicious attacks in Loughton High Road have become high on the local news agenda. “It’s like God planted the vision in my mind” he said. Last year Essex Police approached Epping Forest District Council because Street Pastors were working so successfully across Essex. Caroline Wiggins, Safer Communities Manager at EFDC said “I think it’s a brilliant idea. It’s quite distressing to have daughters on the street who have drunk too much. People do silly things and Street Pastors will offer support, water and flip flops, if they have fallen off their high heels, and put them in a cab to make sure they get home safely. e Colchester team which came to speak were

inspirational and I attended the training. It’s true that young people in a drugs or alcoholic state are much more inclined to respect older and retired people.” Funding of £5,000 has been put into the project made up of grants from Essex Police, EFDC and Epping Forest Safe Communities Partnership and has paid for uniforms and equipment. “We have a lovely community in Loughton and that’s what the Street Pastors team will help to reclaim.” THE CHURCH IN ACTION….. When an approach was made to Churches In Loughton it was felt to be the right time and the idea quickly found favour with six Churches. On April 20th Loughton Street Pastors will patrol the streets for the first time following a Commissioning Service at Loughton Baptist Church. Street Pastor volunteers will begin their work from 9.00pm until 2.30am backed up by a prayer team based at the Church. “I can’t wait for Loughton Street Pastors to be up and running” said volunteer Keith Hibberd. “is is an amazing outreach programme, very hands on and a valuable asset. Harlow Street Pastors has been running for a year and we joined to observe. We were made to feel at home immediately. Lots of bottles were collected; respect was shown and given to everyone,

bouncers, police and people out for the evening. “One of the most important things I feel we learned was to make a determined effort to engage with people at every opportunity. A simple hello! How's it going? It goes a long way. is can start amazing conversations about experiences including happiness, joy and sadness. e prayer team gave great back up. God's family seems to be working in so many places.” Rev Dulson clarified “It’s not about going out to preach at people. We hope to be the eyes and ears in Loughton. As there is no linked CCTV when drink and drug fuelled spats occur we can act quickly to diffuse situations or alert the Police if needed. We will get to know the bouncers and in time we hope to link up with a local taxi firm so people can get home safely. “ is new scheme supports the ‘Love Loughton’ initiative that started last year, also under the auspices of Churches Together in Loughton, .to unite the local community. So maybe that rant by Rev Dulson, out of his bedroom window, did get listened to after all.

“Street Pastors is about Christians rolling up their sleeves and getting involved in practically responding to the problems of crime and safety. ey are like beacons on our streets and I want to see them shining brightly in every constituency” David Burrowes MP

Todd White WHITEWALL GALLERIES WELCOMES “THE COOLEST ARTIST ON THE PLANET” WHITEWALL GALLERIES, STRATFORD CITY, SUNDAY 29TH APRIL, 1PM-3PM

T

odd White, Hollywood’s artist to the stars, is jetting in from LA to launch ‘Whispered Words and Pretty Lies’, his new collection of artwork, at Whitewall Galleries in Stratford City. Todd also has a serious side, and recently flew into the UK to

receive the Diana Princess of Wales award Gold Medal for services to the Diana Awards charity. Todd commented: “Princess Diana inspired so many people in her life, and it made perfect sense to help raise money that will go towards encouraging young people in their own endeavours, whether creative, charitable or entrepreneurial." Todd’s stylish new collection focuses exclusively on women, giving us his highly personal take on the machinations of the female mind. Somehow, his unerring eye recreates every nuance of body language and expressions - a sidelong glance, a come-hither stare – and draws us inexorably into his enticing world of intimate strangers. But as the title of the collection suggests, the words on their lips and the smiles on their faces do not always tell the truth… Todd is a compulsive observer of detail, always studying and absorbing figures, faces and features. He spends his life people-watching - scribbling down sketches whatever the situation to record an idea for his next work. While his subjects come from everyday life, his perspective is so unusual that he alters the way we

perceive people and the roles we play around each other. He studies body language, using its nuances to capture the subtleties of what we show and what we hide. Hands are a focal point as he has always been impressed by how powerfully and expressively tiny gestures can amplify an actor's performance. ''Everyone's hands are full of personality,"' says Todd, "ey reflect the subject's state of mind almost as much as facial expressions." Whitewall Galleries is delighted to be hosting this important exhibition from a major presence in the art world. Since it opened its doors in Stratford City last year in the Olympic Park, the gallery has staged a number of successful shows from award winning artists including Rolf Harris CBE, Royal Portrait Artist Darren Baker and ‘the UK’s most popular living artist (BBC TV National News) Doug Hyde. Whitewall Galleries made its debut in London’s Westbourne Grove at the end of 2006, and five years later this astonishing British success story has introduced their ‘new experience in fine art’ into 31 stylish gallery venues in London, across the UK and beyond. eir intention was to bring a new gallery concept to some of the country’s most vibrant areas - inspirational artwork from international award winners, household names and the freshest new talent presented in a warm and sociable atmosphere without the overtones of elitism that seem to dog the world of fine art. e response has been overwhelming and they have helped literally thousands of people to become art collectors or to expand an existing collection, often in unexpected new directions. Beautifully designed and with a definite aura of luxury about it, the cutting-edge gallery in the Olympic Park offers art lovers a place in which to relax and enjoy viewing an exceptional range of original paintings, collectable limited editions, sculptures and fine art books. Whitewall Galleries director Jonathan Kearns commented “Todd’s new collection shows why he is the darling of the L.A. elite. He captures the lifestyle of the starlets and socialites of his home town with the wit and insight and he has become one of the world’s most collectable and successful living artists. We look forward to celebrating some great international art in the heart of this fantastic international setting!” www.whitewallgalleries.com ■

Gok's TOP 10 TIPS FOR SPRING

TV stylist Gok Wan reveals the inspiration behind his third TU for Sainsbury's collection and the spring trends to invest in. By Lisa Haynes APRIL2012 37

f you're struggling to master this season's new trends then go against the grain like TV's friendliest stylist, Gok Wan. His mantra is: "Forget them and choose an era instead." at's exactly the thinking behind Gok's retro-inspired third collection for TU at Sainsbury's, which he describes as his best yet. With high-waisted pencil skirts, swing dresses, cigarette pants and peplum tops, Gok's aim is shape-enhancing staples that you'll want in your wardrobe season after season. "I'm obsessed with the Fifties," he says, beaming. "It's the era I love. e pieces are elegant with really simple, clean lines. I've pared it right down." With his army of 'Gokettes' and more than 750,000 followers on Twitter, Gok knows all about the tribulations a new season can bring. "Oh yes, spring/summer is by far trickier," he says. "You hear women saying, 'I'm so hot but I'm still going to wear this knit if it kills me!'" HERE, GOK REVEALS HIS 10 INSIDER HINTS AND TRICKS FOR MAKING THIS SPRING AN ALTOGETHER SUNNIER FASHION EXPERIENCE: 1. LIGHT LAYERS Take a rain check on the heavy winter coats and knits and dress for the weather forecast instead. Gok says: "If you feel more comfortable with layering, layer up but use finer materials like lightweight knits, jerseys and cottons so you'll have that autumn/winter feel but you're not going to overheat."

GOK FOR TU GREEN KNOT DRESS, £40 (ALSO AVAILABLE IN BLACK)

2. PRINT PERFECT Even the least body-confident woman can still embrace this spring's vibrant print trend. Gok says: "Print styling rules don't work for everybody - you have to see what works for your body shape. Generally, the bigger you are, the bolder the print you wear. Smaller prints can make you look bigger." 3. DO DARKS Yes, the uber-brights, pale pastels and bold prints are out there - but you don't have to lighten up. Gok says: "ere is a styling adjustment you've got to make because your wardrobe needs to be climate-controlled for spring/summer season but you don't have to steer away from darker tones like black." 4. ADD MOVEMENT Make it swing for spring. While fitted pieces can look chic, fluid pieces are more comfortable on balmier days. Gok says: "Try a piece with a circle skirt that has movement either a tea dress style or mid-length circle skirt." 5. TINKER TAILOR is is the season to find your perfect blazer that becomes your go-to spring cover-up. Gok says: "Opt for tailoring that isn't so fitted it feels formal but not so oversized it feels too casual. Try and find a blazer cut somewhere in-between the two." 6. LEG S.O.S. Prep those pins if skirts are on your agenda. ose pasty limbs can't stay hidden in 120 denier tights all summer long. Gok says: "Try a massage and spray tan for a body boost. If you can't bear the thought of baring your legs, chiffon wide-leg pleated trousers are a great alternative or go long with a maxi skirt or dress."

fashion 7. MONOCHROME MAGIC If in doubt, turn to black and white for effortless Chanel-inspired spring chic. Gok says: "Monochrome just always works. Black and white summer combos work best with sun-kissed skin so if you're milky white, top up with self-tan for a golden glow." 8. CLOTHING DETOX Organisation is key to an inviting spring/summer wardrobe. Clear out your closet and see what pieces will work for the new season. Gok says: "Don't confuse yourself. It's good to have a separate spring/summer and autumn/winter section either side of your wardrobe with crossover clothes in the middle." 9. BODY CONFIDENCE at dress that flaunts your muffin top? Avoid, avoid, avoid. Never wear something that you'll be checking and adjusting every five seconds. Gok says: "Make sure you feel your most confident this spring and only wear something you feel comfortable in rather than things you'll be fidgeting in." 10. DESIGN CHEATS Look for dropped hemlines, hidden support slips and tailored shoulders - some of the design tricks hidden within Gok's clothing to help showcase your shape. Gok says: "Make your wardrobe geared towards body solutions - it's why I tend to dip into eras more than current hyper-trends." GOK'S PRODUCT PICK Perfect your wiggle walk - if there's one piece Gok can't stop raving about in his TU collection, it's the classic black pencil skirt, £30. Gok says: "I like seeing a silhouette in a pencil skirt. One of the things I remember from being a stylist is trying to find a flattering mid-length pencil skirt on the high street. "I think this one is going to suit every body shape and it's one of those key pieces that any woman of any age can put on and instantly feel sexy."

HEALTH B EAUTY

Running ONE OF LIFE'S GREAT SIMPLICITIES IT'S EASY TO JUST BUY SOME RUNNING SHORTS AND TRAINERS, AND GET OUT OF THE DOOR WHENEVER YOU CAN. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE IS A LITTLE MORE TO IT THAN THAT! Running is one of the best forms of exercise, not only for getting fit but for weight control too. A 30-minute run, three to four times a week, trims your waistline, strengthens the cardiovascular system, improves muscle tone and definition, and installs a positive mental attitude. Running can also be a great social activity. Here is some essential running advice that you may need in the key areas of training, clothing, shoes and injury prevention. TRAINING STAGE ONE Make sure you warm up, stretch and cool down for every run. ● Don’t make the mistake of trying to do too much running too soon. Start off very gently and remember that if you cannot hold a conversation when you are running, you are pushing yourself too hard. 40

APRIL2012

Don’t worry about how hard you are running or whether you are doing enough, just get out and establish the routine first. After about a month of your training, your consistency should start to feel like a habit.

STAGE TWO At this point you might consider about involving a professional. Find a recommended personal trainer to progress your running training at the right rate for you. If you don’t belong to a gym then find a freelance trainer that will come out to your house. is doesn’t have to be incredibly expensive just a couple of visits and they will write you a plan and show you different running techniques. ● Set yourself a running goal! is will be great for your motivation. Beginners are advised to start off with a 5k race as their first goal. ● Alternatively, you could download a running training plan compiled by a professional coach to get you started.

HEALTH BEAUTY RUNNING SHOES Buying a pair of running shoes can be a daunting task. ere are hundreds of pairs on the market and unfortunately it’s not just a case of buying a pair that feel comfortable and look cool. Here are some top tips to help you get the right pair: ● Forget the colour of the running shoes. Prioritise with fit, function and feel. ● Don’t buy the running shoes your friends have always run in, they may not be right for you. ● Take advice from a knowledgeable expert. Only buy running shoes after you’ve tried them on. ● Keep your feet dry. Running-specific socks will help stop moist or sweaty feet from blistering. ● Gait analysis will show how you move. Use this to hone your footwear purchase, learn about where your technique can be more efficient, and understand what preventative maintenance is required to prevent injury. ● Footbed? is can be added to enhance the support that the shoe offers and help with knee, hip and back alignment when running. RUNNING CLOTHING As a new runner, the first words you should add to your running clothing vocabulary are ‘wick’ and ‘wicking’. is is how fabric deals with the moisture (i.e. the sweat) the body creates. A good piece of running clothing must transport moisture away from the body towards the outside environment, so even with intensive sweating you can feel comfortable and dry. e piece of clothing should also be able to regulate body temperature; this doesn’t mean it comes with a hot or cold switch that you can turn off and on at your leisure! You should try to layer your clothing so you’re able to adapt to the weather as it changes. NUTRITION FOR RUNNERS At first, you do not need to make radical changes to your diet. However, as your training increases, it will place additional nutritional demands on your body. You need to fuel your body with the right, nutritious and balanced diet to provide it with all the essential nutrients it requires to enable you to perform at your best. During running exercise the working muscles use stored energy, and the two main fuels the body has stored are carbohydrate and fat. e body’s reserves of carbohydrate (glycogen in the muscles) are limited, but the body’s reserves of fat are less limited. When you become tired it is usually to do with the depletion of the glycogen reserves in the muscles. Carbohydrate is the most important fuel for an active person, starting out running. It is stored in the muscles as glycogen. To maintain your energy stores you need to keep your glycogen stores topped up each day. e best way to do this is to have a low-fat, high-carbohydrate snack or light meal two to three hours before exercise, and then your stomach has time to empty before physical activity. Start refuelling your energy stores as soon as you have finished exercising - how much you need will depend on the length of time you have been exercising.

It is really important to drink before, during and after a run waiting until you are thirsty is not advisable, as you will be dehydrated by then. For most active people, selecting a wide variety of foods from each of the five major foods groups will ensure an adequate consumption of all the essential nutrients required by the body.

INJURY PREVENTION FOR RUNNERS Many people start running with the greatest of intentions, only to be struck down by injury a few weeks into their training regime. is is an unfortunate and unnecessary setback, which can be prevented or at least the risk reduced, by taking a few simple precautionary steps: ● Ensure you are running in the correct running shoes for your running style and bodyweight. ● Always carry out a thorough warm up before exercise, which should leave you slightly sweaty and your body prepared for the upcoming activity. ● Ensure correct and adequate stretching is incorporated into your training regime, including at least one session of stretching away from your running sessions. Avoid the temptation to run too far and too fast before your body is ready for it; overloading the tissues, can lead to injury. ● Seek advice with regards to your correct running posture and any muscle imbalances. It’s easier to prevent an injury than it is to treat one once it has occurred. ● is also means that you don’t have to take time out of your fitness regime to recover, and spares you all that pain! Be sensible, literally taking one step at a time. If you are aiming to race, start with a 5k, then you can progress to a 10 mile race, Half Marathon and if you are aiming for the top? WHY RUN THE VIRGIN LONDON MARATHON? e London Marathon has grown into one of the world's truly iconic races, whether running on behalf of a charity, or trying to beat a personal best, running the Virgin London Marathon is a sensational and life-changing experience. For many people, running a marathon is a lifetime ambition with months of hard training going into an immense 26.2 mile race. Offering wonderful scenery, supportive crowds, and even the possibility of appearing on national television, the Virgin London Marathon boasts the best possible backdrop to an inspiring and life-affirming event that will stay with runners forever. Each year the London Marathon creates thousands of inspiring charity stories, as runners in fancy dress costumes fight against the odds to complete the epic race and meet their fundraising promises. With large crowds cheering them on to glory, it can be an emotional experience for all. With its perfect combination of inspirational charity stories, inclusivity and ever-enthusiastic spectators, there has never been a better time to run the Virgin London Marathon. In offering a breathtaking experience for running beginners and professionals alike, the marathon certainly provides a day out that you won't want to forget in a hurry!

Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR FIBRE-REINFORCED COMPOSITE DENTISTRY Fibre technology is used in many areas of our lives. Because of its high strength and lightness, fibres are used in making aeroplanes, Formula 1 cars, bicycles, golf clubs, etc. is superior technology is now available in dentistry (in conjunction with white filling, or composite materials) for stronger and longer lasting results. We are proud to use everStick fibres in many ways to offer clients cosmetic and cost-effective solutions. By using these techniques, ensures minimal invasive dentistry where the clients’ own healthy tooth substance is saved for as long as clinically possible. is also means that other treatment options remain available should the patient ever need them in the future. TREATMENT OPTIONS WITH FIBRE REINFORCED COMPOSITES Splinting of loose teeth Gum disease can cause loosening of teeth. If this problem is not treated, teeth may need to be extracted. Potentially expensive treatment options such as bridges and implants are then required. erefore, a procedure calling splinting using fibre material and composite (white filling) is a great way to secure loose teeth for many years. Excellent oral hygiene and regular professional gum maintenance with the hygienist is required for successful, long lasting results. Replacing a missing tooth A laboratory made fixed bridge or a dental implant are two recognized and successful treatment options to replace a missing tooth or teeth. However, using scientifically proven

42

techniques with fiber material and cosmetic composites (white fillings), we can now offer an alternative solution to replace a missing tooth and save you a lot of money. e fibre is used to bond a custom created tooth to the adjacent teeth. By removing old fillings and incorporating white fillings in the bridge design ensures added strength for long lasting results (these bridges can last for 10 years or more if there is excellent homecare and hygiene). ADVANTAGES OF A FIXED BRIDGE WITH FIBREGLASS/COSMETIC COMPOSITE (WHITE FILLING) ● 1 visit procedure ● Cost effective ● Strong and long lasting ● Highly aesthetic (improved appearance) ● Smooth and comfortable ● Fixed option (no need for a denture) ● Improved function and chewing

porcelain crown depending on the budget and the amount of remaining tooth structure that is present. Cosmetic fixed retainer (after braces) e traditional way of “retaining” teeth in the straightened position is via a fixed retainer using a thin metal wire and white filling material. However, a more cosmetic and potentially stronger option is to use a precision made, thin fibre strand bonded to the inside of the front teeth using white filling material. Because no metal is used, this is the most aesthetic option available.

Stronger white fillings For a medium to large cavity, there are two options available: a laboratory made porcelain inlay or crown, or fibre reinforced white filling. A white filling can be made much stronger (and therefore last longer) by placing fibre material between layers of composite (white filling) during the build-up procedure. Fibre – reinforced posts A tooth that has had root canal treatment is weaker. e tooth can be significantly strengthened by using fibre material in the root canal (“a post”). is strengthens and reinforces the tooth, and also acts as anchorage for a white filling to be bonded to. e final result can then either be a cosmetic white filling or a

VARICOSE VEIN TREATMENTS AVAILABLE AT RIVERS HOSPITAL

W

ith warmer weather on its way, many of us are looking forward to swapping our winter layers for shorter summer clothes, and even getting into shape for the beach. However, many people may dread baring their legs in summer because of a very common problem – varicose veins. Approximately 30% of women and 15% of men develop varicose veins in their lifetime, and while the condition can be unsightly, it does not usually pose any serious health problems. Removal of varicose veins used to be a fairly standard treatment available on the NHS, but unfortunately, this is no longer the case. For most people who want their varicose veins treated for cosmetic reasons, the only option is to be treated privately. However, this does open up a lot more options to the patient. For those who wish to get their varicose veins treated privately, there are a number of different options, depending on the severity of the case. SURGICAL METHOD e surgical method usually involves a procedure to strip the non-functional vein from the affected area. e main disadvantages of conventional surgery for varicose veins have been the need for hospital admission, general anaesthesia and the extent of bruising and discomfort post operatively requiring time off work as well as restricted activities. Most surgeons recommend at least 1-2 weeks off work depending on the type of work. NON –SURGICAL METHOD Endovenous laser treatment’ (EVLT) involves passing a laser fibre along the abnormal vein. Using ultrasound to guide the fibre, the surgeon is able to treat the vein without stripping it from the body. e technique means that no overnight hospital stay is needed or

46

APRIL2012

general anaesthetic used. is revolutionary procedure minimises the pain and bruising associated with conventional saphenous vein stripping and means that the usual 1-2 weeks off work can be avoided, as the operation is often performed under local anaesthetic. Rivers Hospital also provides Sclerotherapy treatment for thread veins. read Veins (also known as Spider veins or broken veins) are a common problem, particularly affecting women. Small red or purple veins can form anywhere on the leg and while they do not pose any major health risk, they may cause discomfort. Sclerotherapy works by injecting the thread veins with a small amount of solution, making them fade. As with all Rivers services, these consultations and treatments are carried out by fully trained and registered healthcare professionals in a clean, professional and friendly environment clinic, with strict measures for the control of infection For more information on the above treatments or to book an appointment, please contact 01279 602644 or email rivers.enquiries@ramsayhealth.co.uk ■

MYTH: Hair extensions Damage your Hair FACT: When hair extensions are applied correctly there is virtually no reason why they would damage your hair, thousands of women have used hair extensions to grow their own hair to a desired length with no adverse effects whatsoever. However, that is not to say everybody's hair is suitable for hair extensions. At Rapunzel the safety of your hair is taken very seriously hence a free consultation is offered along with a complimentary check up appointment. MYTH: You can't have hair extensions if your hair is fine FACT: In fact, many women with fine hair choose to use hair extensions to add extra volume. Extensions can be done in very tiny size to be virtually undetectable . MYTH: You have to dye your hair to the same colour as the extensions. FACT: This would not happen at Rapunzel as every hair colour is kept in stock all of the time. MYTH: People can tell when you are wearing hair extensions FACT: When they are done properly by a skilled Technician, placed in the right places with the correct amount of extensions used & expertly cut in, hair extensions look completely like your own hair and undetectable. MYTH: You can't keep up your highlights & root colour when the hair extensions are in FACT: Actually you can still do highlights, you just work around the extensions. When dying roots the colour can be applied as it normally would. At Rapunzel once you have our extensions in we can look after all your hairdressing needs if you would like us to. MYTH: You can't brush & style easily with hair extensions FACT: As long as the right brush is used (supplied by Rapunzel Ltd), then you can brush right into and through the roots with no damage to your own hair or the extensions. You can also use straightening irons, curling tongs & heated rollers as long as you are careful to avoid the bonds. APRIL2012 49

MY STORY BY JYOTI PARMAR When young thoughts turn to careers, becoming a dentist isn’t one of the most popular pursuits. But for Jyoti Parmar it was at the top of her list. This is Jyoti’s story… Jyoti, one of four sisters, was born and brought up in Birmingham after her father became the first of his family to emigrate from East Africa in 1969. Throughout her schooling, it was Jyoti’s ambition to become a doctor, but right at the last minute before choosing her University options, her aunt got her thinking about dentistry. Once the idea took hold, she signed up to a four and half year dentistry course at Manchester University. Focused and determined to succeed, Jyoti qualified in December 1993. Thereafter, she found herself taking up a Vocational Training (VT) place in Southend, which could have felt a long way from home had it not been for a close friend from university joining her. After completing her VT year, she moved on to an Associate position at the same practice for another two years. It was then she met and married Ash Parmar, already an established dentist, which turned out to be a match made in heaven. “I feel very fortunate,” says Jyoti. “I always dreamed I would marry a dentist and set up my own practice. After I met Ash, I realised how hard it was to run your own business. When we were dating, we decided to work in separate practices (distance makes the heart grow fonder!). Hence I found a job in Brentwood, while Ash ran his own practice in nearby Hornchurch.” But some years later, Jyoti joined Ash as his business was expanding. Jyoti continued to work there for many years, taking time out to bring up their two children. In 2011, their vision of creating a state of the art dental practice was realised when Smile Design By Ash opened in Chigwell. “We worked hard on every detail and most importantly created a great team. Now the practice is established, many of our clients come to us through recommendation.” As well as a complete range of cosmetic dentistry and access to dental specialists, clients also benefit from a comprehensive range of facial treatments and permanent make up. “We were keen on offering our clients the opportunity of having younger and healthier looking skin with top professionals to compliment the beautiful smiles we create,” explains Jyoti. In many respects, it is the dream practice, providing something for everyone. The practice also prides itself on the high quality of its general dentistry. Jyoti says, “Dentistry has changed. In the past, because people had bad experiences, this affects them for many years. But with specialised training, better facilities and vastly improved resources, the perception of the public is now slowly changing. We are lucky to be living in an age where dental problems can be resolved comfortably rather than taking teeth out.”

APRIL2012

Jyoti believes that general dentistry is just as important as having a good-looking smile. “It’s about addressing the health needs of the client, regular examinations, and maintaining a clean and healthy mouth. Many people are nervous, but Ash and I build up their confidence from the very first visit to our practice. I like to take my time and make my patients feel totally at ease. I also find taking pictures during certain dental treatments is very useful, as my patients can actually see and therefore have a better understanding of what is happening in their mouth.“ Increasingly popular is the 6 Months Smiles (6MS) braces system. Conventional orthodontic treatment can take anything up to two years, whereas 6MS takes between four and nine months to achieve a straight and attractive smile. With tooth coloured braces and wires, this is the most popular braces system for adult patients. “I really enjoy providing orthodontic treatment. Due to my previous experience doing braces, I find achieving the end result for the patient really rewarding, as it truly improves the individual’s confidence.” Just like her husband, Jyoti’s high standards are clearly evident. She radiates a calm and serene composure at all times, whether it’s with her patients at the practice two days a week, or with family life as a busy mother of two. Jyoti and Ash are providing a service based on trust and integrity. Their family values mean that they welcome patients of all ages to their practice for dental care. Smile Design By Ash is a dental practice with a difference, that’s for sure ■

ome years ago I had a large oil-on-canvas portrait of a lady, obviously of noble background and, in her day – that is of the later 17century – of considerable beauty. It was a fine example of a typical set piece of time; she is holding, rather dramatically, a scantily clad child who clearly wants to play with a small dog, and all are within swathes of luxurious drapes. In a well-preserved condition and in its original carved wood and gilt frame, it was not long before it caught the eye of someone who recognises a good picture. A deal was struck and the picture was delivered and hung in a place just made for it. And so began one of those great friendships that grow from common interests, although this buyer had enjoyed a few more interests than I, and I thought mine were varied enough. e customer and later to become friend was Laszlo Grof, a beguiling Hungarian who arrived in England in 1956 and without any English found employment first as a cook and then as a steel worker in an iron foundry, then into the mine as an explosives expert. Next came a spell as a furniture maker for Messrs Gomme in High Wycombe working on their famous ‘G Plan’ range, before turning his hand to running his own chicken farm. Settling down to become a qualified accountant Laszlo then went to Oxford to receive a degree with honours in history and has just completed his 8th tour of Transylvania lecturing on his favourite subject, the history of cartography. In this field Laszlo is one of the leading authorities on ancient maps with a collection envied by museums and connoisseurs all over the world. In the field of music he is a keen jazz buff and has been in the audience on several occasions

John Bly ZOLTAN'S

remarked on two contemporary paintings hanging in the same room as the lady with the child and dog. ey had an instant appeal in the colourful and atmospheric representation of rural Hungary, full of light and shadows. Zoltan explained that the Impressionist movement had and still has an important influence in Hungary and a leading exponent is the artist Zoltan Grof – no relation – who painted the two I was admiring.

ZOLTAN'S SUNDAY AFTERNOON

when I’ve been playing, both with a small group and with the Sticky Wicket Big Band Drum Spectacular which we put on at e Stables in Wavenden, the jazz Mecca established by the

late and much lamented John Dankworth and his still-singing wife the fabulous Cleo Lane. So time spent with Laszlo is never silent and while visiting him last year I noticed and

Zoltan’s technique of using enamel-oil, give his paintings the power of colour achieved by traditional oils, with the luminescence of light and shade created by the modern medium of lacenamel. Zolton developed his skills and love of the medium as a student. e impressionist traditions of the famous Hungarian Nagybanya School which was founded as an artist’s colony in 1896 by Simon Hollosy, was the spark from which Zoltan developed his passion and skills to produce the vibrant and atmospheric paintings. In 2001 Zoltan was commissioned to create 24 large scale pictures for UNESCO, each commemorating the cities, towns and villages given World UNESCO status. His paintings are in numerous private collections in Hungary and abroad. At the time of writing we are holding an exhibition of Zoltan’s work in the grand Bedford Room at Woburn Abbey, the first we hope of many. We all meet fascinating people from time to time but there can be few occupations like mine where you have the opportunity to learn just how fascinating they really are and how they act as catalysts for other people with varying talents in such disparate fields.

ARE YOU READY FOR DIGITIAL?

W

e have all seen the adverts on TV about digital switch over but what does it really mean? On the 18th April 2012 London is going digital. e existing analogue TV signal will be switched off and replaced with a new, stronger digital TV signal. It will mean that almost everyone will be able to receive digital TV through an aerial (Freeview). Digital TV also uses less broadcast space which means that after switchover, there will be more room for new services such as wireless broadband, local TV and High Definition Television (HDTV). To keep your TV service, you will need to convert your TVs to digital before your area’s switchover date however this will mean you will have a separate box plugged into your existing TV set and you would require another remote control. At RGB they pride themselves on service and helping our customers every step of the way towards purchasing there new TV.

56

APRIL2012

Majority of people like things simple and don’t like the idea of two separate remote controls for their Television. is is why all sets at RGB are fully digital Ready and only require one remote control. On selected TV sets you can also receive High Definition Channels through your aerial free of charge. is allows the user to view a crystal clear High Definition pictures all through their normal aerial. e Multi award winning RGB stores have a great range on display ready for demonstration. Ranging from the frameless Samsung LED TV’s to the Sony built in Wifi TV which allows you to access internet services such as You Tube, BBC IPlayer, Music TV, and Love film. With the digital switch over only around the corner RGB have an amazing “Digital Switch Over Sale”, which includes the Samsung 22” LED TV for an unbelievable £164.00. If you are unsure about you current TV why not visit one of RGB’s stores and ask the experts for some free and impartial advice. e RGB

Team are fully trained and committed to make sure you are satisfied with choosing the right TV for you. “Many people do not fully understand what Digital Switch over is and are not sure if their TV is compatible? Having two remote controls can also be very confusing for many people. is is why I would recommend to a visit a RGB store to confirm your decision”. Director Dennis Digwa. A PASSION FOR WORKING WITH WOOD Woodthorpe Joinery specialises in the fitting of quality wooden shutters, blinds and awnings. is local business is run by two brothers: Gareth and Justin 58

APRIL2012

Woodthorpe Browne who both have a passion for working with wood and are the fourth generation in the industry. e office is based in Chingford with a workshop in

Woodford, serving residential and commercial clients locally in Essex and north east London. Plantation shutters are the core of the business and are an incredibly versatile home improvement, looking stylish and blending with a range of decors, both modern and traditional. ey provide shade to keep your home cool in summer, and insulate for added warmth in winter. ese shutters are produced from solid wood and are also available in customised colours and stains to match existing décor. Several options are available to consider, including Tier on Tier style, Cafe style and Classic full-height style. Bay windows, patio doors and gothic arches are easily catered for and all look great when fitted with these shutters. e Woodthorpe Browne brothers provide other types of window shading as well, including made-to-measure wooden Venetian blinds, and also Fabric Roman and Roller blinds that are manufactured

from a range of fabulous fabrics. Blackout blinds are in demand at this time of year due to the early dawn sunshine and remote control systems for awnings and blinds are becoming more popular. Justin says, “Many of our customers purchase the shutters for privacy and the added security that they provide and not just their great aesthetic qualities. It is our goal to find the right type of shading and that suits our clients’ needs, at the right price with great service.” Garden awnings installations are more seasonal, with requests for installations peaking for Woodthorpe Joinery in early summer. When mounted with lighting and heaters they provide an additional room for all seasons ■ Tel: 0203 589 4879 www.wjoinery.co.uk

THE OLYMPIC RANGE A NEW BREED OF INDOOR POOL FROM ORIGIN Origin has been in the indoor and outdoor swimming pool business for over thirty years. In that time they have built literally thousands of pool installations - most of which are still in daily use today. Along the way the company has listened to, and in many cases benefited from, ideas and styles that their customers have suggested and the new Olympic range has included many of these suggestions. In fact it is not an exaggeration to say that their wide network of customers has helped to make this the benchmark Origin design collection. More pool space and greater consideration of internal layout. Extra ideas that their customers find important - such as more daylight, better changing facilities, and importantly, more room for gym equipment. Another subject they mentioned was cost! So the company has brought these state of the art packages in at some record-breaking prices. And to help out even further, the Chancellor didn't alter the VAT rate but they

60

APRIL2012

did! For a limited time Origin are prepared to pay half the VAT on all the Olympic pool buildings. Typically this could mean a saving of up to £20,000. But how has Origin managed to produce what is probably their most advanced range at such competitive rates? rough the use of cutting edge technology and the finest new materials they can offer some very exciting advances to today's pool buyer. For example, fully temperature controlled pool and surroundings. An exterior finish engineered timber construction. A wide choice of exterior and interior finishes and colours, so the Olympic pool house will match in with the colour, texture and surroundings of your home. To complete this comprehensive package, Origin has commissioned ten big canvas prints in a wide range of subjects (from flowers, to palm trees to penguins!) to complete the picture. e company will offer you any two of these with their compliments. Artwork can really maximise the interior

look, and these big bold subjects will forever be talking points to all your guest swimmers. e Olympic range features four models - the Arena, the Marathon, the Challenger and the top of the range Olympiad. e Arena is a compact well appointed design, with all the features of its bigger counterparts apart from the Origin trademark roof lantern design. e pool size is a generous 5.7 x 2.75 metres, and has a powerful swim jet to really try your stamina. e other models even include gym equipment recommended by Origin - and the whole range boasts shower facilities and sliding patio doors. If you chose the mid-range Marathon the standard price for the complete package would be £189,000. Take off half the VAT as long as this offer lasts, and you would pay £173,250 - a saving of £15,750. * A great incentive for you to be first in the Olympic race.

ABOUT ORIGIN Origin is Britain’s biggest indoor pool company. From small beginnings in the 1970s the company has grown, and its product ranges become more sophisticated, ever since. e directors and their team of key people are largely the same, some of the team being able to boast over twenty five years of service. And of course the expertise has grown to new heights, resulting in the superb architect designed buildings of today. Origin are responsible for every element of the process from early scribbled designs that include many of the customers' thoughts, through the architectural design, planning, ground works and construction. All is within the remit of this privately owned British company - from the first sketch to the last lick of paint, controlled and overseen by the Origin team. And that's a promise.

Origin is proud to sponsor Olympic swimmer Fran Halsall. Her constant and remarkable progress includes world records, and qualifying for the Olympics fastest in the world in 50m and 100m freestyle events this year. Apparently she wishes she had an Origin pool house!

One of the big canvas pictures that Origin will present their customers, as part of the Olympic package. You can choose any two from the range.

MOTORS

M

arch saw the European launch of the all new Audi A3 at the Geneva Motor Show. Destined for a September launch in Essex Audi showrooms throughout the region, the new A3 offers new engines, new chassis, cutting edge infotainment and reduced running costs - putting it right at the front of the compact hatchback sector. From the outside, the evolutionary new design, with its classic Audi “tornado line” and exemplary finish puts it way ahead of the competition in the new model’s visual appeal. And beneath its elegant skin, the new A3 has raised the bar in every area – despite its modest circa £19,000 starting price. Emissions of as little as 99g/Km have been made possible thanks to ultra lightweight technology, which makes the new model a full 80 kg lighter than its predecessor. Add to this the introduction of three heavily reworked engines which deliver average efficiency gains of 12% and the new A3 becomes one of the most tax and fuel efficient cars of its type. Inside, the completely redesigned interior of the Audi A3 breaks new ground in terms of quality with standards of materials and workmanship that are very much in keeping with a significantly more expensive range of cars. And from a design perspective, the minimalist “floating” dashboard, and optional 3D colour display for the driver information system make the cockpit of the new A3 a truly inspirational place to be. e new model will initially be available in 3 door guise in 1.4 and 1.8 TFSI petrol versions plus a highly fuel efficient 2.0TDI diesel version. Essex Audi customers will be amongst the first to have the opportunity to experience the car first hand when it arrives in the showrooms from late summer onwards.
