e simple to enter competition launched on 1st October 2012 and ran until the end of November. Dream Makeover Essex attracted 2,500 entries and captured the imagination of those seeking a new look or a revamp from a dream makeover worth £25,000 to each of the worthy winners. ese were reduced to a short list of 26. All the candidates were interviewed by Ash Parmar from Smile Design by Ash, Mr CT Pillai, founder of Advanced Vision Care and France Furlong from Perfect Skin. ree winners were chosen and treatments began. In an emotionally charged event, the audience of 200 gasped and tears fell when the winners were revealed at a stunning Gala event held at the Marriott Hotel in Waltham Abbey last month hosted by Jeff Brazier. eir stunning transformations where shared with the audience with pictures and video clips filmed along their transformation route – we bring you their emotion journeys… Most of us at some point, have visited Valentine’s Park and Mansion. e mansion reopened in February 2009 following extensive restoration works. Since then, the mansion has welcomed over 90,000 visitors. e mansion is on two floors: the old servants quarters are used as artists’ studios. Currently there are twelve artists who work in a range of media, from painting to fused glass and photography. Approximately three times a year, Open Studios are hosted which is also very popular. Visitors meet the artists and meander through their workshops. In addition, the artists have a yearly group show and sell unique handmade items in the mansion’s gift shop – we take a closer look at this hidden gem. Just five years ago a 10 acre derelict wasteland destined to become yet another building site until it was acquired by a “builder” who transformed it and created this bio-diverse, ecological park as part of an on-going nature conservation project. Now it’s simply nothing less than an Oasis for Wild life in the heart of Woodford. Redbridge Lakes has become a visiting spot for a number of rare species of birds. Almost 100 different species of birds have been spotted at the site and features have been put in place to help create the perfect environment for birds, mammals, insects and fish. In this article, we outline just a few of the many features that makes Redbridge Lakes one of the best kept secrets in Woodford. It is truly what we like to call a natural Oasis in the heart of suburbia. Enjoy your issue and we look forward to seeing you in May.

Valentine’ s Park and Mansion A WONDERFUL PLACE TO VISIT FOR SPRINGTIME FAMILY FUN WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

Most of us at some point, have visited Valentine’s Park and Mansion. In addition, the artists have a yearly group show and sell unique handmade items in the mansion’s gift shop. Valentine’s park is easily accessible from all our residences, is large, welcoming and extremely pretty in the summer. Whether to walk the dog, or for a picnic by the lake, there is so much to enjoy. Recently, the award winning park and mansion, hosted the ultimate guest: HRH e Queen as part of her diamond jubilee celebration, plus the opening of the brand new Dry Gardens and 4 day festival of art and design. e mansion is surrounded by historic, restored gardens and is operated by the charitable trust: Vision Redbridge Culture & Leisure. ere are hundreds of workshops and events throughout the year for all ages. is ranges from creative workshops for adults (flower arranging, painting, fused glass and embroidery workshops), to family events combining storytelling, crafts and trails. Also there is a schools education programme, with bespoke interactive sessions for primary schools (subjects include Victorians, mini beasts and bugs) e sessions are very popular as they provide a hands on/immersive approach to history, in a unique environment. For families, they can enjoy a fantastic day out at very low cost using the Free family backpacks, dressing up in Victorian costumes in the Family Room, using special computer interactives or strolling through the beautiful gardens. “Best thing for Redbridge! So glad the house is restored, much to learn about its history.“ Razwana W. 8

APRIL2013

ere are so many interesting ways in which we could all enhance our benefit of the park and mansion by looking even more closely, at what’s on offer… ■ Every year Valentines’ Day is celebrated in a unique way, with costumed interpreters, music, dancing, crafts and love potions! ■

e house is very popular with paranormal groups who have reported a high level of paranormal activity –they are able to hire the house for an entire night and conduct a range of investigations

e House is becoming a popular filming location, including the hosting of the BBC2’s Great British Bake Off on 3 occasions in 2011 and 2012

e Victorian Kitchen was also used for episodes of the BBC’s Charles Dickens Show in 2012.

Photo-shoots include a ballet and floral themed photo-shoot for the Daily Telegraph

Educational events to raise awareness of the house’s history, with guided talks and tours

In 2010, the mansion worked with Scottish designer makers Timorous Beasties; they created beautiful designs for mugs and cushions on sale in the gift shop.

“Working at Valentines Mansion is a privilege. We have a unique and inspiring historical environment where everyone is welcome. It’s a great day out for everyone, and the house and gardens are real delights. I hope people continue to enjoy visiting our site for many years to come. “ Nadia Brice – Valentine’s Mansion Manager. Spring Cleaning Your Home and Inbox! WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

W

ell the first day of spring has come and gone… and it’s still icy outside! Personally I feel very sorry for the flowers. ey erroneously think it’s spring; they pop up their beautiful heads, only to be chilled by winter’s frozen hand, their bravery thwarted in their desperate attempt to bloom in this unpredictable and rather depressing weather. Easter and Passover too have finished, so whether it’s runaway matzo crumbs on the floor, or pieces of Easter Egg, spring (when it happens!) is certainly a great time to spring clean the house. Clear away the cold bleak winter, revitalising your home with fresh air, open windows and perhaps a little decoration; brighter colours to reflect the eagerly awaited sunshine and warmer climate. Winter clothes packed away, the wardrobe now filled with a spring/summer collection. Yet despite this annual routine, there are other aspects of our lives that merit a spring clean and fresh approach too. My priority is going to be my email Inbox. I’m aware that by the day, hundreds (what feels like thousands) of emails are flying through cyber world into this willing portal which seems to accept all. ose unwanted emails appear and seem to defy me from the

10

APRIL2013

sanctuary of my computer. Like most of us, I have various email addresses, personal, professional, old and rarely used email addresses, yet all seem to be invaded. Even as I type this feature, my Microsoft Office is flashing messages received; it’s amazing at just how much is FREE TODAY, the discounts, offers, as my life flashes before me with every shop, website or networking group I’ve ever attended. is tsunami of information, builds up to a 100 ft wave of emails. Vistaprint, Atlantis Cruising, Dunelms, FREE coaching, discount vouchers, I really hate this unwanted information, competing with other emails from clients, customers and colleagues. ey blur the boundaries of what’s important and what merits my time to read and digest. I especially dislike TechWeekEurope UK. I don’t even remember signing up to them; in fact I’m sure I didn’t. Most people don’t realise but legally, there has to be an UNSUBSCRIBE link at the bottom of these emails but TechWeekEurope UK doesn’t have this facility. When I tried to contact them to beg them to stop emailing me, I then found I had instead signed up again to their newsletters! If anybody knows this website or how I can break this cyber umbilical cord – please help me! I try putting them in the Junk box and

generally unsubscribe, but it’s almost impossible to keep up with all the new invasions. Rather like dealing with ants, you think you’ve solved the problem by spreading ant powder. But then minutes later, the back-up cavalry are invading from every crevice imaginable. More annoyingly is when these unwanted diversions are on my Blackberry. e little red light flashes and I know I have a text or email. So I check, as most of us do – it could be urgent – it could be relevant to business – or some life-changing information. Instead, more often than not, it’s “IMPROVE YOUR SEO RANKINGS” from an unknown company in Timbuktu! Currently there are over 600 emails in my Junk Box but as soon as I’ve spring cleaned and culled, more float across my screen like shooting stars. So how do we spring clean our lives, in keeping with our home and Inboxes? Well by getting rid of ALL the rubbish as much as possible, so we can make way for what’s fresh, new, clean and preferably wanted… Do you suffer with unwanted emails? If you have a comment on this feature, please contact me: Michelle@starcopywriting.com / Mobile: 07949 556 294 www.starcopywriting.com ■

Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET WHAT DOES A PROPERTY MARKET MEAN? Having been brought up in the heart of London’s East End, I am most familiar with markets; Petticoat Lane, Roman Road, East Street, Ridley Road, Walthamstow, I could go on. ese vibrant places were the lifeblood of communities long before that of Equity Markets and Property Markets. It’s the latter that most concerns us these days and by the look of things our Government has finally woken up to the fact that nothing is going to go forward until the UK Property Market starts to pick up. By “picking up” I do not mean that prices need to accelerate. Far from it, they are still in my view far from affordability for too many people. It’s activity that’s required and this could easily be improved if money was easier to obtain, and the lending criteria were considerably relaxed. It was therefore most gratifying to hear the Chancellor make a big play in last week’s budget that he was unveiling a mortgage guarantee plan to assist 130 billion pounds of mortgages for people buying property to a maximum figure of £600,000. Now I cannot be certain that my efforts to encourage this initiative had anything to do with the decision. For as regular readers of this column may remember, I have written on more than one occasion of the mortgage Guarantee Schemes that existed some 25/30 years ago. I have also personally lobbied several conservative M.P’s on the subject and I would like to think that this may have contributed in some small way

Should it then fail to sell, it “can’t possibly be the price,” it must be “the wrong agent.” e market trader shouts as loud as you can, “pile them high and sell them cheap.” It’s all a matter of perception and realisation. e street trader’s goods were bought at today’s price and will only sell at a price that the customer thinks is good value. e home owner bought at “yesterdays” price and yet irrespective of the competition insists that if the home they are selling fails to achieve the figure that they require, they just won’t sell at all. in establishing what the Government describes as their “new initiative.” ey say that, “the devil is in the detail”, so let’s wait and see the whole plan after the Treasury bureaucrats get their hands on putting some flesh on the bones of the deal before we get too excited. WHAT’S GOING ON LOCALLY? Well, fresh entries on to the scene are extremely slow to come on line. Hopefully when winter decides to release its vice like grip on spring, more owners maybe tempted to consider bringing their home to the market. e rental market however, is extremely active. I began this piece by talking about markets and cannot help smiling inwardly when comparing the attitude of many people, who seriously want to attract a buyer for their home, to the stall holders seriously trying to sell their wares. e latter is well aware of the competition they face. e former is sometimes still totally in denial. e home

The Expertise Behind the Words and Strategies A CONVERSATION WITH MICHELLE HARRIS STAR COPYWRITING LIMITED

WHAT IS STAR COPYWRITING LIMITED? Michelle:We are a team of writers, graphic designers, photographers and web designers who help our clients to maximise their sales and profit potential. DO YOU THINK COPYWRITING IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF A MARKETING CAMPAIGN? Michelle:A copywriter is essential to any marketing campaign. If you are going to the expense of a website, brochure, press release or script for a video, you have to ensure that the language, message and approach to the target audience has been thoroughly researched and carefully written. I analyse my clients’ competitors and make absolutely sure that by comparison, our clients can trump their marketing and advertising material. Plus everything, words or images, are underpinned with marketing strategy and emotive language. Some of the prerequisites to being a senior copywriter/marketer are a clear understanding of human nature and of course, the ability to write. Whether using emotive language that helps to drive a sale or for images which make an immediate impact – understanding how and why people buy is a skill and an art form. ARE YOU INFLUENCED BY YOUR CLIENTS? Michelle:Absolutely. ey lead the campaigns. Delivering beyond their initial expectation is always an exciting buzz. ARE YOUR CLIENTS LOCALLY BASED AND WHAT’S THE PROCESS? Michelle:I would say 70% of the clients are local businesses, the remaining percentage are international. As a copywriter, in order to produce a piece of writing that is credible and accurate, it is important to understand the subject matter and how potential clients can benefit from either a product or service. ■ It's all about benefits and solutions ■ Converting ‘Want’ to ‘NEED’ Most clients require a marketing strategy, then a timeline for other services such as a website, promotional material, brochures and scripts for videos. So in this respect, I will put together the perfect team. Bringing a package together is very rewarding, especially when the clients benefit from an exciting ROI (Return on Investment). WHO ARE THE TEAM? Michelle:I work with a hand-picked team of top quality, creative professionals. I always ensure the most appropriate talent for each project. Together we form a think tank of expertise to help our clients maximise their visibility and sales.

M

arch has been a very eventful month in the life of Normanhurst School in North Chingford. With a whole school Open Morning, an ISI inspection of the Early Years, a Science Super Learning day to celebrate Science and Engineering week and the school production, a very entertaining version of Roald Dahl’s ‘Cinderella’. Headmistress, Claire Osborn, explained, ‘Normanhurst is a busy school! We are constantly looking for ways to broaden the children’s school life. Yes, it was a challenge to have an inspection in the midst of Open Morning, science days and rehearsals, but the inspection team were able to see first-hand the school in action and to see our pupils’ enjoyment of learning. Pupils here are encouraged to work hard but also to take part in all aspects of school life. For example, at the end of this term we have our Easter service where all pupils from 2 ½ to 16 years old will be contributing to our Easter celebration, either taking part in the Easter Bonnet parade, singing, performing or reading, a fitting finish to a busy term.’ Epping’s Coopersale Hall School finishes their Spring Term with an Easter Bonnet parade by pupils and concerts by their budding musicians and performers. is follows hard on the heels of a visit from famous athlete and ex-Olympian Phillips Idowu MBE, who brought the Red Nose fundraising effort to life with a fascinating talk on his recent Zambezi River challenge. On the

same day, Headmistress Kaye Lovejoy spent the morning talking to new parents visiting the school with their children, many looking for places in September 2013. A quick change into Red Nose outfits for all the staff and pupils meant that the fundraising could begin in earnest. Headmistress, Kaye Lovejoy commented, “We all enjoyed our special, fun Red Nose activities and being interviewed by the local press and the BBC. Phillips Idowu really emphasised the importance of helping others and we were delighted to raise over a £1,000.” At Oaklands School in Loughton, Headmistress Cheryl Macnair has been delighted for the Year 6 pupils and their successes at 11+ examinations. She explained, “is Spring term has seen our best ever results for our 11 year olds, with many getting multiple offers to a variety of selective local independent schools. e final week of term had visits from the Easter Bunny, our school swimming gala and a School Disco. Also in March, our boys and girls cross country teams ran well and the Dance Club performed to a high standard at the recent Epping Forest Festival. Lots of new parents visited us on Open Morning and our older pupils enjoyed acting as guides. A very busy term at Oaklands School.” More information on all the extra activities can be seen at www.oaktreeschools.co.uk – download the latest newsletters to read more ■

Local Charities and Worthwhile Causes WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

I

British Heart Foundation - Wanstead 119C High Street Wanstead, Wanstead, London, E11 2RL

n another one of my features this month, I talk about spring cleaning and clearing out old stuff. Well if you’re in the mood to feng shui your home and rid yourself of all the old unwanted bits and pieces, which used to be treasures, rather than pile in a black bag and dump, perhaps some charities could benefit. I know that most of these shops are on High Streets and parking isn’t easy and the bag could be heavy but some charities do organise pick-ups. My own experience with the British Heart Foundation was a bit of a nightmare but then I received a letter confirming what happened to the furniture donated and the hassle was certainly worthwhile.

e British Heart Foundation has charity shops selling second hand clothes, books and bric-a-brac items. All money raised is put towards researching into heart disease. e heart information line can be found on 0845 070 8070. As mentioned, they do collect furniture however ensure that sofas, mattress etc have label confirming they’re fire resistant. Scarlet – Buckhurst Hill 46 Queens Road, Buckhurst Hill, Essex IG9 5BY Specialising in good quality, donated designer clothing, high street fashions and also new gifts, this is more of an upmarket charity shop. So for those of us with extremely high calibre wardrobe, Buckhurst Hill is the place to go. Also easy with parking as a drop off could coincide with a shopping trip to Waitrose. en a coffee afterwards at Costa Coffee! Raising money for St. Clare Hospice ■

First eydon Garnon Beavers – eydon Bois We can all help in so many ways and I wanted to particularly note the First eydon Garnon Beavers who raised £500 for Water Aid from a sponsored silence. As a result, more than 400 children in Africa will now have access to taps and clean water. e local heroes? 16 boys from the club aged between six and eight years old sat in silence for an hour. So by my calculations for each child that sat quietly, 25 African children will reap a wonderful reward. Well Done to the Beavers… Donating Blood – Epping The Church of Immaculate Conception – Church Hill, Epping, Essex CM16 4RA e Church of Immaculate Conception in Epping will be open on April 11th from 2 p.m. – 3.45 p.m. and 5 p.m. – 7.45 p.m. for blood donations. To find out if you’re eligible or donate, or to book an appointment, visit ttp://www.blood.co.uk/index.asp. Cancer Research – Brentwood 87 High Street, Brentwood, Essex CM14 4RR Cancer is still a frightening disease and

20

APRIL2013

affects so many of us, either directly or through a close relative’s suffering. Fortunately, governments are ploughing money into research but still, so much work needs to be done. If walking down Brentwood High Street and if you have some books, clothing or ornaments which have been cleared out as part of the spring cleaning process, or your children have outgrown some of their toys, it is certainly worth dropping into the Cancer Research shop. Everything helps…

REDBRIDGE LAKES SOMETHING FOR ALL THE FAMILY

THE KINGFISHER POOL What was once the silt pit, has now been converted into a pool specially designed with habitat to attract nesting Kingfishers. Complete with a hide to allow the enthusiast to photograph what’s going on in the pool. SAND MARTIN NESTS Again to encourage these fantastic birds, which have been spotted near our venue, we have created a natural habitat in a soil bank to allow these birds to nest and thrive at the lakes. DIPPING POOL AT TADPOLE BRIDGE I am sure that we all remember how much fun we had as children netting newts and other pond dwelling creatures. is facility is amazing fun for the kids and adults alike. Take along a net and a Jam Jar and see what you can find. BUG CITY!!! If you love creepy crawlies, you’ll love bug city. e bug haven is a purpose built natural habitat for all species of insects and spiders to dwell happily and undisturbed. Great care and attention has been put into the development of a suitable environment for these creatures to thrive in. Adjacent to Bug City, they have a neighbouring block for the solitary Bees called Gnat West Bee Bank, and soon to be introduced are some honey bee hives. Overlooking the busy bug City, you will see the spooky purpose built bat residence known as “Gotham Tower”, which is ready for occupation from the local bats that visit the lakes late every evening to catch insects. PATS’ CAFÉ Waiting for crumbs near the Café is the resident chicken that runs free, so if you have a dog, make sure it’s kept securely on a lead. e Lakeside café offers excellent reasonably priced breakfasts, lunches, light refreshments, speciality coffees and children’s meals. ere are comfortable seating areas both in the café and also outside on the covered patio next to the lake. e toilets are exceptionally clean and disabled toilets and baby change facilities are also available.

JUST FIVE YEARS AGO THE LAND PICTURED ADJACENT WAS A 10 ACRE DERELICT WASTELAND DESTINED TO BECOME YET ANOTHER BUILDING SITE UNTIL IT WAS ACQUIRED BY A “BUILDER” WHO TRANSFORMED IT AND CREATED THIS BIO-DIVERSE, ECOLOGICAL PARK AS PART OF AN ON-GOING NATURE CONSERVATION PROJECT. NOW IT’S SIMPLY NOTHING LESS THAN AN OASIS FOR WILD LIFE IN THE HEART OF WOODFORD.

R

edbridge Lakes has become a visiting spot for a number of rare species of birds. 22

INTERESTING FACTS… BEHIND THE BLUE PLAQUES WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

M

ost of us know the significance of the English Heritage Blue Plaque: essentially a building has a blue plaque to highlight a famous (or infamous) resident. However various other local historical societies are now erecting their own plaques and for many different reasons:

e Ilford Historical Society has erected five plaques to celebrate the 1951, Festival of Britain: ● Ilford Hospital Chapel – to celebrate the building. ● Valentines Mansion – Celebrating the vine planted in 1708. A cutting was taken for Hampton Court. ● Methodist Church Hall, Ilford. is plaque celebrates the discovery of a pre-historic mammoth skull. I recently saw the exhibition in the Natural History Museum entitled: e Redbridge Mammoth! (Not a local voluptuous lady!) ● Fairlop Oak pub in Barkingside High Street. A massive 1,000 year old tree, which had a trunk circumference of 36 feet. Originally part of Epping Forest, sadly the tree burnt down in 1820. e plaque celebrates this monumental tree and is also the origin of the pub’s name: Fairlop Oak. is tree was also significant in the 1700s for a scene of revelry during the Victorian era. Every first Friday in July (which led to a weekend event), Daniel Day (now buried in Barking Abbey churchyard) would go to Fairlop to collect his rents. e residents would then hold a picnic of bacon and beans, under the tree – which further led to the term ‘beanfeast’. ● As most of our areas (except Brentwood) are covered by the Central line, if interested to go only slightly out of our zones to Newbury Park, there is a blue plaque over the passenger entrance arch. Unfortunately same of the plaques have been stolen so don’t be too disappointed if by the time you read this feature, and go blue plaque trekking, that it’s not there. e Loughton Historical Society also have been erecting their own blue plaques. Chris Pond, chairman of the Loughton Historical Society paid £175 out of his own pocket to set up the first plaque on behalf of the society for Reverend Robert Hunter. Mr. Pond currently lives in the property in Staples Road where Reverend Hunter resided from 1823-1897.

24

APRIL2013

Some of the blue plaques erected by the English Heritage in Woodford Green: ● Labour Prime Minister Clement Attlee (1883-1976) ● James Hilton (1900-1954) – author of Goodbye Mr. Chips irty-four blue plaques have also been erected by Loughton Town Council in the last fifteen years. ere are also plaques for: ● Gladys Mills (1918-1978) – pianist Mrs. Mills. ● Jacob Epstein (1880-1959) – 20th century sculptor. Chairman of Ilford Historical Society, Jef Page commented: “History has always been very important to me and is more than just an interest. Promoting it to others and publicising its enjoyment to everyone through talks or at events such as guided tours or the Redbridge Mayfair is very important. “Ilford Historical Society has developed a new website to provide information and answer questions, gets involved in local conservation issues and doing the research and revealing the past adds to everyone’s quality of life.” For more details about the Loughton Historical Society and Ilford Historical Society, please see their websites: www.loughtonhistoricalsociety.org.uk Chairman: Dr. Chris Pond, OBE ilfordhistoricalsociety.weebly.com Chairman and programme secretary: Jef Page ■

“It was an honour for me to work with Mr Pillai of AVC. He has changed the lives of the three winners of Dream Makeover Essex forever. Before embarking on the Dream Makeover project we deployed a market research project, reviewing all the major laser eye clinics in the process. We had many clinics to choose from, but only one was able to provide the level of expertise, service and customer care our patients are used to. I strongly recommend any dentist who wishes to throw away their glasses or never wants to wear contact lenses again, to have a comprehensive consultation at AVC. THEIR DREAMS CAME TRUE DREAM MAKEOVER ESSEX STARTED LIFE AS A VISION OF ASH PARMAR, A LEADING COSMETIC DENTIST, SOON AFTER HE OPENED HIS STATE-OF-THE-ART DENTAL PRACTICE IN CHIGWELL – SMILE DESIGN BY ASH.

A

t the time much was made of his involvement in the three series of Living TV’s Extreme Makeover UK that radically changed peoples’ looks and their lives. As part of a top Team, Ash was responsible for many smile makeovers done on TV. Ash is proud of the many before and after pictures that highlight their journey from

down and dowdy to downright gorgeous. He was inspired by his contribution to their new found confidence as a result of their Extreme Makeovers. Ash has also treated members of the cast of e Only Way Is Essex. His celebrity stable of TOWIE members include James Argent, Georgina Dorsett, and Nanny Pat – the TV cameras came to the Chigwell practice twice. After twelve months of planning, Dream Makeover

Essex was finally launched on an unsuspecting public in October 2012 as a free to enter, on-line competition. It offered top-to-toe dream makeovers for men and women aged 20 – 65, worth up to £25,000 each! ONE BIG DIFFERENCE None of these treatments would be invasive! Ash believes the same life changing looks can be achieved without going under the knife. Ash set about finding a

“dream team” to produce the stunning results he was after. His strenuous search led him to six top local companies who would come together to offer the winners a fabulous look and feel that would send their confidence sky high. Smile Design by Ash would ensure perfect smiles plus dental hygiene care and teeth whitening. Advanced Vision Care, one of the UK’s leading independent corrective eye surgery clinics, would perform miracles for poor eye sight. Perfect Skin was chosen to provide facial aesthetics that would banish scar tissue and lines for younger looking skin. Body Perfect offered personal training sessions to strengthen and tone muscles and improve fitness with regular workouts. MODE Beauty Salon helped to work its magic on hair removal and body pampering. Award winning hair salon Zoology would provide the crowning glory. A personal stylist and perfect pictures made up the mix. Using his dental credentials Ash brought in Philips, leaders in the field of oral healthcare, to sponsor the competition. Philips completed the prize with a suite of oral health products as part of each of the winners’ treatments. Ash says “When we decided to put on Dream Makeover Essex, we were looking to find a dream team who could complete fantastic makeovers so our winners would be smiling from their hearts. Well we certainly achieved that! ese people have blossomed into beautiful butterflies. Following the spectacular Reveal Event we have all been uplifted and are humbled by the whole experience and the results.” www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk

he simple to enter competition launched on 1st October 2012 and ran until the end of November. Dream Makeover Essex attracted 2,500 entries and captured the imagination of those seeking a new look or a revamp from a dream makeover worth £25,000 to each of the worthy winners. ese were reduced to a short list of 26. All the candidates were interviewed by Ash Parmar from Smile Design by Ash, Mr CT Pillai, founder of Advanced Vision Care and Frances Furlong from Perfect Skin. ree winners were chosen and treatments began.

JOIN US ON THE JOURNEY... CAROLINE MCKENNA Aged 44 Lives in the Docklands Our Irish mother of two was shy and rather nervous. She also had low self esteem and felt dowdy after years of being a Mum and putting thoughts about her own looks on hold. Add to that an uneven smile, poor eyesight which made reading shopping labels a real

challenge and patchy skin. Caroline was ready for a life changing journey. Her daughter Lianne, aged 10, helped persuade Caroline to enter the competition as she decided Mum needed a lift. Her poor smile has been replaced with a Mini Smile Makeover which included cosmetic contouring, teeth whitening, crowns, veneers and white fillings. Although not suitable for laser treatment Implantable Contact Lens, miniature tailor made lens, were inserted into her eyes and are permanent and invisible.

Keith’s glasses, bought from the High Street, just made his eyesight worse and following simple laser treatment he was able to throw away his glasses and for the first time in many years see himself properly in the mirror.

BONHAMS CLASSIC CAR AUCTION 29TH APRIL 2013, RAF MUSEUM, HENDON, LONDON NW4 onhams, international auctioneers and valuers, return for their exclusive auction of Collectors’ Motor Cars and Automobilia at RAF Museum, Hendon, this April. The aircraft hangars and historic aviation displays provide a magnificent backdrop for the auction. There will be between 60 and 70 motor cars on show, with an expectation of approximately 1,000 registered bidders. And with the viewing audience, attendance will be high. The eager bidders and audience will be made up of a wide range of collectors and classic car enthusiasts, with a huge passion for motoring in style.

B

Rob Hubbard, Senior Specialist in the Bonhams Motor Car Department, said: “As a department we are very much looking forward to our annual sale at the RAF Museum in Hendon. It is an ideal location for a sale of collectors’ motor cars and it is always a sale that attracts a good crowd. It attracts worldwide bidding, and last year’s sale in particular recorded some very strong prices for a number of cars, particularly for those with a strong provenance or cultural significance. It has been an excellent 2013 so far for the global department, with a record sale total at our Scottsdale auction in the US in January, more than €13 million realised at our Paris auction at the Grand Palais at the start of the month, and a

fantastic $3.75 million inaugural auction at Boca Raton in Florida at the weekend. We hope to continue this success, and thus the growth of the classic car market, with our Hendon sale.” About Bonhams Bonhams, founded in 1793, is one of the world’s largest auctioneers of fine art and antiques. BRITISH BEACH POLO CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 saahighlight highlightofof the the S South Coast’s summer season, the AsahiBBritish Beach Polo Championship will return to Sandbanks, Poole for its sixth year on the 12/13thJuly 2013.SSupported by some of the best arena polo players the he hotly anticipated beach festiv val al promises more excitement and glamour both on and off the pitch. England, Ireland, Scotland (sponsored by our very own Sandbanks Life for the second consecutive year) and Wales will be competing with w Ireland keen to retain the title after a gripping final against Waless last year. There is floodlit night beach polo on the Friday evening, visiting international polo teams and of course the ‘bonkers’ beach polo after parties.

of the players and guests. The thorough bred ponies and high goal playe ers love playing on the beach in front of a large and enthusiastic crowd. Jack Kidd who is a regular for England at the Championships says ‘I hav ve e been lucky enough to play polo all round the world – Sandbanks is still one of my favourite weekends of the year. The polo is insanely competitive, the guests are always on great form and the beach party’s well – they are simply the best!’ Whether visitors are dining in the waterfront Sandpolo Hospitality marquee, enjoying the exclusive VIP experience, soaking up the atmosphere with General Admission Admission tickets, or just choosing to sit outside the fence on the purpose built beach viewing area it is a chance for polo and Sandbanks to show off its attributes to about 5000 seasoned and new supporters each year.

To complement the polo The Asahi British Beach Polo Championship offers a host of other activities such as ‘have e a go’ polo, the Oakley Ladies Beach Volleyball, olley fashion shows, the charity A Audi u udi V Polo Pony race and the vibrant retail village. The polo is an excus cuse to dress up (or strip off for a quick swim), stay up late and indulge. Founded by Johnny Wheeler and David Heaton-Ellis the publicity for the inaugural Championships in 2008 was kick started by Piers Morgan drawing people’s attention to Sandbanks as ‘Britain’s Monte Carlo’ . Despite the onset of the recession a growing number of businesses use this ‘boutique’ ev vent ent to entertain clients, reward their staff and promote their brands. Whilst sponsorship is still an important revenue stream new ideas such as camel polo (stand by for the elephants!), floodlit beach polo, equine displays and the appearance of the odd celebrity has kept people talking about the event and coming back y year ear on year. So why does the Championships keep returning to Poole. Johnny Wheeler says ‘a cooperative council and a large stunning easily

accessible beach are the vital ingredients for us as event organisers. Some good weather, the best polo players and an enthusiastic crowd is pretty important too’. The beach polo continues to add massive value to Sandbanks and continues to go from strength to strength. After Dark Polo players and supporters have something of a reputation for letting their hair down. The polo ‘beach after parties’ at Sandbanks provides seasoned and new comers to the sport with a very cool but exciting place to relax, socialise and dance until the small hours of the morning. On the Friday ev vening v ening liv ve e music will increase in tempo after the floodlit beach polo match with the most original DJs connecting with the mixed generation audience. The closing party on Saturday night brings an unmissable eclectic mix of sounds to rock the Jurassic coast. With the title sponsors Asahi beer providing a refreshing balance to the flowing champagne agne and exxcellent cellent food to fuel the dancing it is rare to see people leav ve e the beach before the 1am surviv vors or photo. www w.sandpolo.com

CHANNEL SPRING CHICKEN STYLE BRIGHTEN UP FOR SPRING WITH CITRUS SHADES. LISA HAYNES REVEALS HOW TO WORK ORANGE AND YELLOW HUES. BY LISA HAYNES

42

What better way to welcome spring than with hues inspired by blooming daffodils ? But don't get in a flap about eye-popping orange and yellow. ere's a multitude of ways to work these bright shades that makes them wearable right now. Traditionally high-summer colours, it pays to be an early bird this season. "ere is no better way to 'spring into spring' than injecting citrus shades into your outfit," says Veronique Henderson, creative director at Colour Me Beautiful (www.colourmebeautiful.co.uk). Get tweeting and chirping about these uplifting looks. SUNNY SIDE UP ere are few colours on the rainbow spectrum that freshen up your style like orange and yellow. Henderson says: "Lemons, primroses, daffodils, light gold, oranges, tangerines, pumpkins, orange red and corals all evoke the feeling that spring is in the air." Add some vitality to your new season look by going statement top-to-toe in your favourite shade. If you're feeling bold, try mixing up two different orange and yellow separates for an uplifting colour-clashing cocktail. "Before figuring out if yellows and oranges are great shades on you, you need to look at the fabric of the garment," Henderson advises. "Yellows and oranges on wool, cotton or linen fabrics will look flatter and matte, making them slightly easier to pull off."

CITRUS TWIST Not everyone wants to stand out like a New York taxi, so use these zesty shades more frugally as accents. "Personality comes into play when wearing brighter colours," says Henderson. "ose feeling cautious should avoid the head-to-toe look and wear as a print." If you prefer an unfussy look, try teaming your yellow or orange with neutral colours like white and beige, which will slice through the colour but still look spring-like. See Louis Vuitton's spring/summer 13 catwalk for a masterclass in a white-hot yellow look. A casual look is the easiest way to experiment with brights so swap your traditional blue denim for a pair of pastel lemon or tangerine skinny jeans. Still feeling colour-shy? Turn to bright accessories - those little 'eggstras' - for a nod to the spring chick look. A bag, shoes or jewellery in one of these hues will transform an everyday outfit with a shot of sunshine. CRACKING COLOURING Find the right uber-bright for you and it will see you right through to autumn. Follow Veronique Henderson's colouring advice to avoid unflattering clashes with your skin and hair. e colour types apply to all skin tones, from ivory pale to black and Asian colourings - the key lies in looking at the contrast between hair and eyes and the subtle tones that make up the overall feel of your colouring. Light Is this you? Light blonde hair, pale transparent skin, pale eyes: think Gwyneth Paltrow. Try and keep your yellows as pale as possible. Ivory with a hint of yellow or a light primrose will be best. Wearing two light colours together is the prerogative of the lights. Clear Is this you? Dark hair and bright eyes: think the Duchess of Cambridge. Dark and Asian skin tones with 'clear' colouring will have dark hair and eyes and jewelled-like sparkling eyes, with the whites of the eyes a brilliant white. A bright yellow or bright orange on a shiny fabric (silk, taffeta) will emphasise your bright eyes and show clarity in your look. Wear it in contrast with another shade to recreate the brightness exuded by your look.

Deep Is this you? Dark hair, dark eyes: think Victoria Beckham. Dark skin tones with 'deep' colouring will have dark hair with the whites of the eyes yellow-tinged. Wear lemon yellow and tangerine in contrast with stark black for a great look, or on its own for greater impact. If you have darker skin, dark citrus shades like marigold and sunflower will be flattering. Warm Is this you? Strawberry blonde to auburn hair, or dark hair with red undertones or highlights: think Tilda Swinton if you're pale or Tyra Banks if you're darker. You are born to wear yellow and orange. Whether you have freckles or not, don't be shy. Embrace those colours and make them your own. Cool Is this you? Ash tone hair, grey/blue/green/brown clear eyes, skin may have slight bluish tinge: think Dame Judi Dench. Japanese women with clear, translucent skin often have 'cool' colouring. Steer clear of all yellow and oranges. If you simply love those colours, you are best to inject them in a print mixed with your best colours (blues and pinks), or in an accessory that's away from your face. Soft/Muted Is this you? Highlighted hair and little definition between hair, eye and skin tone: think Beyonce. Keep your citrus shades as light as possible, unless you have greenish eyes when you can wear the stronger shades. GET THE LOOK Finding a dress like Oscar-winning Jennifer Lawrence's voluminous Christian Dior number (that she tripped over in!) may be a challenge too far, so try to emulate her SAG Awards strapless number instead. Get an award-worthy look with Coast's Portobello maxi dress, £180 (www.coast-stores.com). It's so versatile the straps can be worn up or down. NON-SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION (IDD) THERAPY VS TRADITIONAL TRACTION BY ROBERT SHANKS CO-FOUNDING DIRECTOR OF SPINE PLUS CLINICS Spinal Decompression (IDD) erapy is a revolutionary non-surgical treatment, new to the UK, for people with spinal degeneration due to damaged discs. e MRI scan opposite shows the typical sort of patient we would use IDD erapy on at Spine Plus Clinics. e gentleman in question had been suffering with constant back pain and recurrent back spasms for many years accompanied more recently by numbness in his left leg. Previous physiotherapy had only managed to stabilise his symptoms slightly. After suffering a severe back spasm and after realising his numbness was getting progressively worse, he contacted Spine Plus looking for an alternative to spinal injections and surgery. We sent him for an MRI scan of his back which clearly revealed damaged discs in his spine pressing on the spinal nerves to his left leg, one of his discs (L45) was about half the thickness it should be. We suggested our IDD erapy programme. Although he is currently less than a quarter of the way through he is already showing significant signs of progress. e IDD erapy machine uses advanced computer technology to precisely target, then gently and rhythmically distract specific segments of the spine. is creates a vacuum effect which over a 6 to 8 week course of treatment can help decompress damaged discs and reduce disc bulging, thereby reducing pressure on pinched nerves and improving mobility of stiff ligaments and spinal joints. Since using this ground breaking treatment over the last 2 years we have been able to help many more patients than we previous could with manual therapy alone. HOW SIMILAR IS IDD TO TRADITIONAL TRACTION? Medical trials show traction to be effective for around only 50% of patients which has led to it going out of favour in recent years. Trials with IDD however show 70 – 90% success rate. IDD has a number of features which address some of the failings of traditional traction. Firstly, the use of precise pulling angles and secure harnessing allows individual segments of the spine to be precisely targeted. Secondly, the IDD machine applies distraction at a varying speed during each cycle of low tension to high tension. is is known as a “sinusoidal” form of distraction which is much less likely to cause counterproductive tension and spasm in the spinal muscles (as can occur with the traditional linear traction.) Finally IDD features a patented oscillatory form of distraction producing a better pumping effect for the intervertebral discs. ROUND UP OF CURRENT PATIENTS! Here is a brief résumé of some of our other current patients receiving IDD therapy: Mr N (a pilot) is already seeing a benefit after just 3 sessions with the pins and needles in his fingers subsiding. Mr G, who had a very large disc herniation, is making good progressl and dropping down to one treatment a week. 44

Mrs M, who suffers with facet joint arthrosis secondary to disc thinning, is responding well after just two sessions, reporting feeling looser and more mobile than before. Mr P (from Malta) is doing well, his back pain has resolved and he has booked for a consultation with the surgeon we recommended him to regarding possible keyhole surgery for his hip. Mrs A, who was booked for spinal surgery before she came to us, is continuing to do well, with her symptoms improving after each session, she is now off all pain killers (she was taking 8 codeine tablets a day!) To view IDD patient video testimonials search “IDD erapy” on You Tube or see our IDD web video at www.spineplus.co.uk/iddtherapy. Spine Plus currently have six clinics in the London area including Chigwell, Waterloo and Harley Street. ey offer specialist treatment services for Back Pain, Neck Pain (and all other musculoskeletal disorders), including one of the latest therapies to the UK – IDD Computerised Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression erapy. SPRING'S BRIGHT NEW MOOD DITCH THE DARK MAKE-UP FOR A LIGHTER LOOK FOR SPRING. LISA HAYNES UNVEILS THE NEW SEASON NUANCES. BY LISA HAYNES

If winter has felt a little black, white and grey, inject some colour back into your life via your vanity case. is season brands have gone to town with light and bright hues to put a spring in our step and revamp uninspiring make-up bags. "Colour is back and making a statement for spring/summer 13," says Kirstin Piggott, Rimmel London's make-up artist. "Whether you wear beautiful soft powdery pastels or bold pigments, a focal bright shade either on the eyes or lips is a key trend in make-up looks. is season it's all about being fun and experimental." EMBRACE THE NEW SEASON WITH BEAUTY'S SEA OF FRESH COLOUR. EYES - GO BLUE In the words of Frank Sinatra, Ol' Blue Eyes Is Back - but there's nothing old-fashioned about this look. Banish visions of an Eighties throwback. Fashion-forward aquamarines are the favoured colour family gracing eye sockets this season. Blue is officially the new spring black, whether it's a pretty cornflower pastel wash or turquoise lined eye. "A directional bold eyeliner is an amazing way to add a mega flash of colour without having to brave coloured eyeshadow," advises make-up artist Liz Beckett. Keep mascara to a minimum to really make your true blue liner stand out. LIPS - MAKE THEM POP Pouts are anything but hidden in the background this season. Achieve a loud mouth with a statement spring bright that does all the talking for you. Choose from tones of red-hot scarlet, magenta, fuchsia or coral, or get creative and mix two bold shades together to create your own signature lip hit. L'OREAL PARIS ROUGE CARESSE IN CHEEKY MAGENTA 46

APRIL2013

"Pops of velvet brights are this season's nude lip," says L'Oreal Paris make-up artist Val Garland. "When creating a a powdery lip, dust a powder over the chin to catch any excess pigment then sweep the powder away with a soft brush." NOSE - JUST ADD FRECKLES e signature of youth, freckles are the instant way to anti-age your face - with no pricey skin cream involved. Embrace the faux freckled look for perfectly preppy skin that's been magically sunkissed. It's an easy effect to achieve but think subtle scattering rather than oversized dots that look OTT. e look should say athletic glamour rather than fancy dress gone wrong. Revlon global artistic director Gucci Westman says: "Adding freckles to the face feels youthful and sweet. Create a thin point using brown eyeliner and add sporadically for authenticity." COLOUR PALETTE - PASTEL PRETTY Every spring has a dominant colour theme for make-up and nails, whether it's subdued nudes or flashy neons. For 2013, sugary sorbet hues are sweetening up beauty counters with limited editions aplenty. Estee Lauder's Pure Colour Nail Lacquer fanciful collection of mouthwatering pastels has been christened 'Heavy Petals'. Creative make-up director Tom Pecheux says: "I thought of amazing bouquets from the flower markets, the pretty pastels of children's carousels and the pops of colour from macaroons for inspiration." Simply choose your intensity, ranging from wishy-washy watercolours to power pastels that pack a dramatic punch. FACE - THINK MANNEQUIN SKIN A season awash with uplifting spring colour requires the perfect base to pull everything off. Aim for mannequin-like skin with a

"Highlights are about pulling your face back from the foundation," says M.A.C's director of make-up artistry, Terry Barber, who dubs it 3D spa skin. "It's the idea of nude skin that's slightly high-tech for a well-conditioned look that's balmy and beautified." BROWS - SUPERSIZE THEM Blame Cara Delevingne. e supermodel-of-the-moment admits she never tweezes or threads her caterpillar shape and the power brow look has well and truly caught on... Dominant boyish brows automatically give eyes a tough, modern edge. ink of them as the new mascara for framing your eyes. If you're not the proud owner of a bushy pair, step away from the tweezers and use an eyebrow pencil to create the illusion of couture brows. Make-up artist Bobbi Brown says: "Use a brow pencil in the shade that matches your natural hair colour to define brows. Begin at the inner corner of the brow and follow its natural shape using light, feathery strokes."

HO USE GARDEN

Go wild for flowers TIPS TO GARDENERS ON HOW TO SOW THEIR OWN MINI-WILDFLOWER MEADOW, PERFECT FOR ATTRACTING BIRDS AND BUGS OF ALL TYPES BY HANNAH STEPHENSON

Wildflowers are back in fashion, according to reports on their sales. In the past year, sales of UK wildflower seeds have increased by 60%, thanks partly to renewed interest fuelled by the stunning wildflower meadows at the Olympic Park in 2012. e combined elements of eye-catching visual impact, ecological awareness and wildlife value have fuelled sales of wildflower seeds among many of the main seed companies, including ompson & Morgan, Suttons and Mr Fothergill's. With this in mind, the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) is playing its part during National Gardening Week (April 15-21) as its gardens across the country host talks, demonstrations and events to get gardeners growing wildflowers. Young gardeners will be encouraged to get their hands dirty and learn how to sow their own mini-wildflower meadow, perfect for attracting birds, bugs and creepy crawlies of all types. More experienced gardeners can find out how to support the wildlife in their gardens through a range of talks and interactive workshops on beekeeping, managing meadows and more. Ian LeGros, curator at RHS Garden Hyde Hall in Essex, explains: "Wildflowers are currently going through a massive boom in popularity and are set to be one of the big trends for amateur gardening in 2013.

52

APRIL2013

"ey are easy to plant and maintain, provide much needed habitats for wildlife and are valuable sources of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators. "Encouraging wildlife and pollinators is particularly important in urban areas, so if you've a sunny patch of dry ground that won't support much else in your front garden, it's time to convert it into a wildflower meadow." He offers the following tips to those who want to follow the wildflower fashion: ● Choose seed carefully. Wildflowers are easy to grow but, like all plants, need the right conditions if they are going to thrive. Check your soil type and find a mix that will work for it. ● Poor soil? Look to perennials. If you have poor soil perennial wildflowers will do very well as there will be fewer grasses for them to compete with. Buy seed mixes that contain ox-eye daisies, yarrow, harebells, birdsfoot trefoil, cowslips, lady's bedstraw, betony, yellow rattle and others for waving drifts of colour. ● Go mad with colour. If you have well-cultivated soil, annuals such as cornflowers, corn poppies, corn marigolds and corncockles will do well. Toss in a few barley and wheat seeds for an authentic feel. Annuals are a good choice if you are converting an existing border. ● Time of sowing a meadow is important. An annual seed mix

&

HOUSE GARDEN containing cornflowers and poppies will do better if sown in the autumn, while corn marigolds prefer a spring sowing. If you have sandy or well-drained soils, wildflowers can be sown during the autumn, but if you have wetter, colder soils, you're better off sowing in the spring to avoid seed rotting off. ● Prepare your ground. Wildflowers are easy but do take a bit more work than just opening a packet of seeds over the ground. Prepare your soil first, making sure it is weed free and has been well dug or rotovated. If you are growing wildflowers, keep fertility low in most cases, so avoid using manures or fertilisers as this will just give grasses and weeds the advantage they need to crowd out your wildflowers. ● For full details of the events at RHS Gardens during National Gardening Week, visit www.nationalgardeningweek.org.uk Best of the bunch - Lily of the Valley (Convallaria majalis) ey may seem a fairly insignificant sight in a border but their fragrance is unparalleled, wafting through the air on a warm spring day. I have them in drifts in a shady spot around a garden seat, to enable visitors to experience the sweet scent first hand. You can also cut the stems of the small, neat, white bell-shaped flowers to put in a small vase and bring inside. Planted singly, they only span 10cm x 5cm (4in x 2in) but they soon spread sideways to make a loose carpet, and be careful if you're planting them in a border among other plants because they can become invasive. ey prefer rich, fertile soil with lots of added organic matter, in a shady spot. ey are great ground cover plants for shady, damp situations, spreading by means of creeping roots. Other varieties include 'Albostriata', which has gold striped leaves, and 'Fortin's Giant', a slightly taller type, growing to a height of 30cm (12in). Good enough to eat - Hosta greens If you think that only slugs can eat your hostas, think again, because if you like sushi, you'll probably like to add a few hosta leaves to it. e growing tips are slightly salty and succulent and are better known in Japan as urui, a springtime addition to your kitchen table, and can be blanched and served with goat's cheese and crispy fried onions, or simmered in stock and rolled to make vegetable sushi, or even fried as tempura. Hostas like moist, fertile soil in shade, but when you plant them, put eggshells or sharp grit around the plants to seal in the moisture and deter the slugs and snails. ey can be planted at any time of year, while overgrown clumps can be lifted, separated with a sharp knife and then replanted into smaller offsets. e best flavour comes from the newly emerging shoot tips, when they reach around 20cm and are still closed. You can snip around a third of them off without damaging the plant's health. Suitable varieties include H. sieboldii and H. montana.

ree ways to... Disguise a boundary 1. Create a mixed border directly in front of the back fence, making sure some of the plants are as tall as, or taller than, the fence, to blur the edges of your plot. 2. If you have a short garden, make your borders running down the sides of the plot taper outwards so that they are wider at the far end, making the garden appear longer. 3. Divide the garden using plant screens to shift emphasis away from the boundaries. Even a small plot can be divided, using trellis or woven willow as supports for climbing plants ■ HOSTA

BE A BRIGHT SPARK

GET THOSE JOBS DONE WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM DIY GURU JULIA GRAY. THIS MONTH: HOW TO DO THE ELECTRICAL WORK BY THE RULES AND KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE. BY JULIA GRAY

U

nless something goes wrong with your home's electrics (or you get them checked by an electrician, which you should do every 10 years), it's hard to know if they're safe or not, but this is something you don't want to take any chances with. Not only should old-fashioned fuse boxes, sockets, switches and wiring be replaced, but you may need to do electrical work as part of big home improvements, such as fitting a new kitchen, converting the loft, or changing the use of a room. While it may be necessary, changing the electrics can be very dirty and disruptive. If often involves gouging out plaster to create channels for the cables and taking up the floors, making it hard to continue living there while the work's being done. You can legally do some minor electrical work yourself (see www.planningportal.gov.uk or ask your local council's building control department if in doubt), but it's generally a good idea to get a qualified electrician in. e easiest option is to employ an electrician who belongs to a 'competent person scheme', such as NICEIC (you can search for registered electricians at www.niceic.com). ey can self-certify that their work complies with building regulations (Part P covers electrical work and applies in England and Wales). If your electrician doesn't belong to a competent person scheme and the work they've done must comply with building regulations, you'll have to pay a building control officer from the council to inspect it. In Scotland, the process is slightly different. You apply for a building warrant from your local council to do building work

54

APRIL2013

and any electrical work done under the warrant must be checked by the council or an 'approved certifier' (a registered installer). If you're unsure about the rules and regulations that apply to your part of the country, ask the council. You may want to draw up a contract with your chosen electrician, especially for big jobs. is should cover things like the work they'll be doing, the price they've agreed to do it for and how long it should take, so you have some form of redress if things go wrong. While you may need to pay the electrician upfront for materials (check the receipts), it's not advisable to pay them upfront for labour. If they want payment before the job's finished, the best option is to pay them in instalments when they meet agreed targets, so you're not paying them for work they haven't done. When they've finished, ask them for a certificate to prove that the work is safe and legal (building control can also issue this), which you may need when you sell your home. You shouldn't need planning permission to do electrical work, but you may have to apply for listed building consent from your local council if your home's listed. And if it's leasehold, you may need the permission of the freeholder, depending on the terms of the lease. PRODUCT OF THE MONTH Mixing your own paint colours is a great way to create a unique look, use up leftover paint or get the perfect colour if you can't find it in the shops. But using a paint stirrer is time-consuming and hard work, plus it's easy to leave unmixed paint at the bottom of the tin. Instead, use the Titan Power Paint Mixer (£2.99, Screwfix, www.screwfix.com) drill attachment, a very useful and inexpensive addition to your toolbox. You simply pour the paint into a big tub, attach the Titan to your drill, turn it on and mix away - the paint's mixed in minutes and with a lot less arm ache than with a stirrer. HOW-TO TIP Mould and mildew on walls and ceilings is unsightly and unhealthy, but it's common in kitchens, bathrooms and around windows that suffer from condensation. If it's a problem in your home, scrub the area with a specialist cleaning product (try Polycell 3 In 1 Mould Killer, £6.98 for 500ml, B&Q) to get the worst of it off, then use a specialist paint to cover any marks that remain. Ronseal Anti Mould Paint in White (from £18.98 for 750ml, B&Q) works really well and unlike a lot of specialist paints, it's water based, so it's nice to use and dries quickly. As well as covering mould marks, it prevents regrowth for up to six years and is ideal for kitchens and bathrooms because it's moisture and steam resistant ■

60 MPG PETROL MODELS ARRIVE AT ESSEX AUDI

O

ne of the most significant engine technology advances is now available in A1 and A3 models at Essex Audi. Audi’s Cylinder on Demand (CoD) systems can now be specified on 1.4 litre petrol powered models, offering drivers up to 60.1 mpg. is puts Audi’s petrol engines hot on the heels of their diesel counterparts in terms of fuel economy. More impressive still is the efficiency that the unit will provide. For example in the A1 1.4 variant, this astonishing engine will deliver 140PS, a thumping 250Nm of torque, a 132 mph top speed and just 109g/km of emissions! In short, this is an engine that is able to deliver in every area without compromise. e system works by cutting down on unnecessary mechanical effort through switching from four cylinder to two cylinder operation as required. is allows the CoD engines to cruise ultra-frugally yet immediately draw upon the full power and torque when the driver demands. In addition to less frequent refueling and the benefit of cheaper fuel when compared to diesel, business drivers will appreciate the saving of up to £919 per annum in benefit in kind tax payments that the new CoD models offer. 58

APRIL2013

e new system is currently available in A1 and A1 Sportback models in Sport, S line and Black Edition trim plus in A3 and A3 Sportback models in SE, Sport and S line trim. To find out more about this radical new boost to Audi petrol power, please contact your nearest Essex Audi Centre, details of which can be found at www.essex-audi.co.uk ■

BEAUTIFUL PROPERTIES AND

Design Awards in Essex WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

COPPED HALL.

Big Congratulations to Lord Alan Sugar and Redrow Homes Eastern for their 2013 Building Design Awards by Loughton Town Council last week. ■ Amshold have recently renovated Amshold House in Goldings Hill. ■ Redrow Homes Eastern for the terrace at Borders Crescent. As mentioned in one of my features last month about Blue Plaques in the area, the above two buildings will also be receiving their Blue Plaques. ere are so many beautiful properties in Essex and the following are just a few outstanding examples. EPPING – COPPED HALL Copped Hall is the jewel of the Essex countryside. e ambiance, scenery, atmosphere and overwhelming sense of place leaves you almost breathless with excitement for all the romantic possibilities. Despite fantasy and fiction, the realities are infinitely more interesting and intriguing. To briefly summarise the incredibly rich history, the original medieval building of Copped Hall belonged to the Fitzauchers from 1150 to 1337. Sir John Shardlow conveyed Copped hall to the Abbots of Waltham in 1350 where it was held until 1537 then surrendered to Henry VIII. BRENTWOOD PROPERTIES Brentwood’s best residential area has to be Hutton Mount. Epitomising the most elegant of Essex mansions, detached homes worth in excess of £1 million, sit regally in the property’s surrounding land and exquisite gardens. Quiet roads, meander into sumptuous turnings, where each street offers aesthetic beauty and fabulous, individually styled grand homes. Most of the properties have the perfect gardens to enjoy a relaxing summer’s day or party: or for a nocturnal soiree with friends and/or family.

COPPED HALL.

Brentwood is only 18 miles from London so convenient for commuters using rail links, the motorway or main roads. Also for those travelling abroad for recreation or business, Brentwood is strategically located within an hour of main and local airports. Yet despite its close proximity to the city and a bustling town centre and industrial parks, residents can also enjoy the benefits of living within an area, which has many beautiful villages, parks and farmlands. Culturally and with respect to other beautifully design buildings, there is Brentwood Cathedral and the ruins of St. omas a Becket Chapel. CHIGWELL PROPERTIES Chigwell has many properties to suit all tastes; however a prerequisite is a generous budget! For those looking for captivating and old-fashioned character style homes, there are exquisite and elegant cottages on pretty lanes. Alternatively and for those with larger families or who need more space or room for the fleet of cars, the outdoor/indoor swimming pool and/or tennis court, are the palatial, rambling, unique mansions which are the area’s hallmark. Famed for the quality of the property and the famed owners, Chigwell’s residents are a core group of successful media executives, entrepreneurs and sporting celebrities. So whether you live in Brentwood, Epping, Loughton, Wanstead, South Woodford, Chigwell or Buckhurst Hill, each of these areas are outstanding and beautiful places to live, to bring up a family, or simply to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle ■
