Well it’s that time of year again! Amazing how quick the year seems to gain momentum from New Year celebrations to the following Christmas. is year has been very difficult for many people, so in addition to looking forward to Christmas celebrations and a welcome respite from economic woes, let us all hope – 2012 is going to be a better year for most people … So where do we begin?! In the UK, for children (and actually most of us adults who are children at heart!) it’s the presents! Santa Claus! Christmas tree! Sparking and glittering magic, sweets and endless excitement. And after the presents have been opened, the wrapping recycled and the games have begun, by lunchtime, tired and hungry, it’s time to rest and enjoy a sumptuous feast… is is primarily, turkey (or goose), stuffing, vegetables, gravy, roast potatoes, bread sauce, followed by mince pies with brandy butter, Christmas pudding and then in case, there is still some room for extra food to help you through to the evening … Christmas cake, chocolates, biscuits! … And then plans for a New Year’s Resolution which generally includes a diet and commitment to join a gym!

Every Christmas, the brave fire fighters at Loughton Fire Station, build a terrific Santa’s Grotto, so that Father Christmas, can drop by and see all the children having fun! e event is organised to support the Burned Children’s Club. Last year, the Christmas fundraiser, was very successful and fully supported by the local community. is year, Santa’s Grotto (and Christmas Market) will be for two days instead of the usual one. Activities will include: visiting Father Christmas in the Grotto (with photograph), face paints, raffle, cakes, teas and coffees, snow machine and especially, as within the Fire Station, all children can play on the fire engines! An incredible and exciting treat for children to pretend to be heroes plus every child, will receive a free gift/toy. Speaking to Tim Wright, about the event, he commented: “I really like it when we all pull together as a team and use some of our "other" skills to build the whole Santa Grotto. Alongside with our excellent Open Day in the summer, these dates are a real testament to this team’s ethic. Leading up to it we are all discussing the best ways to advertise or how best to get prizes for the raffle. We get a chance to be creative.” From all of us here at Fish Media Group, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and very healthy, happy and successful 2012. Until January 2012,

eflecting 2011 – Contemplating 2012… inking back on this last year and the features written for our loyal readership, so much has happened that it has certainly been busy and always exciting. Probably the biggest highlight was Prince William’s and Kate Middleton’s marriage on 29th April and as featured in the April 2011 magazine. Aside my column, we had a fabulous double page feature and some wonderful photographs to commemorate this historical and wonderful event. is wedding was a modern fairy-tale and watched by billions around the globe and

Also and closer to home, the opening of Westfield in Stratford. As more people are becoming more familiar with this new and exciting shopping centre, it certainly is taking a lot of locals away, from buying online. It’s now fun to go shopping. On a personal note, I have been back a few times, and each time, I like it more and it’s not even finished. So as it continues to evolve and looking forward to 2012, Westfield and the fruition of the Olympic and Paralympic Village within Olympic Park, plus the Olympic Games, our areas will certainly be a focal point, as the world watches us again. And as per usual, we will not disappoint… As many of you have noticed, we regularly include a promotion of a local charitable event. So, if you are looking for extra coverage which would be of interest to the readership, do please tell us more and wherever possible, send us photographs. We will always try and help worthy causes. Charities supported this year, have included Haven
House, Richard House, Dr. Barnardos, Jewish Care, Essex International Search and Rescue Team, Royal National Lifeboat Institution plus so many more. For me personally, I am always researching and learning new interesting facts relevant to the areas covered by the magazine’s circulation. e two highlights were the literary connections as covered in the July/August 2011 magazine entitled: ‘Wanstead Exhibition Celebrates the Literary Greats from Essex’. Also that Arnold Schwarzenegger trained in a gym, not too far away from our terra firma, when he first arrived to London from Austria. Despite his recent bad press, he’s still one of my favourite actors, and whether Kindergarten Cop, Harry Tasker in True Lies, or as Howard, in the brilliant Christmas film, Jingle All e Way, he’s entertaining and great fun. ank you for all the letters and emails received, your feedback is important to us and helps us, to keep the editorials ‘just right’ and which will continue to keep you interested and reading our magazines. Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET “if you don’t ask – you don’t get” should be the motto on your shield of battle.
END OF YEAR REPORT – THE MARKET COULD DO BETTER.
I
am sure that, like me, you are by now severely suffering from bad news fatigue with every piece of written and broadcast media spewing out and regurgitating the same doom and gloom regarding the economy and the euro crisis.
On the letting scene it is, as with sales, linked to affordability. e market is always hot at between £800 and £1200 per month, but cools progressively above these figures, with even the best homes out in the cold at figures above £4000 £5000 per month.
Just for once, estate agents are not being labelled as the villains of the piece, having just been relegated from the top of the public enemy number one position in the league of the devious, dishonest and dishonourable, to now just below Politicians, Bankers and Tabloid Journalists.
We have traditionally relied upon demands from our Premiership footballers for homes at these figures and above, and over the past year has seen several Spurs and West Ham players living in comfort and luxury. However, they have recently found stiff competition from some delightful young people who have gained stardom in the TV Show, e Only Way is Essex. e football transfer window opens again for the month of January, and we expect several new quality houses to come on our books in readiness.
It is certainly a difficult time for forecasters and soothsayers with each day bringing a new opinion or point of view. I am therefore only able to report on what has happened or what is happening today. Bearing in mind the views I express are only that of my own, and my first hand experience of local property, I can honestly say that there has not been any noticeable change in local property values during the past year. As I have said many times, there will always be the odd exception, but in the main it has been exceptionally difficult to engender much interest in property that has been marketed above £1.5 million. We have probably been more fortunate than most in tying up a few deals at £2 million and a

little over. However, as we must expect, the top of our market is receiving little attention. e bulk of business transacted has in fact been well below the one million pound mark which now represents a mental barrier to many. Gone is the insatiable appetite for large Bungalows and expensive Apartments. is traditionally was the choice of property for “empty nesters” who were trading down after receiving a premium price for their mini mansions in the prime roads of Chigwell and
its environs. With planning permission recently granted for almost sixty new apartments on four major sites in Chigwell alone, Developers would be advised to think very carefully when selecting the design specification and pricing of the proposed units, before even digging a hole in the ground. Hopefully they will be well advised. e days of 2003 when we sold out the entire development in Brook Parade for Fairclough Homes in just over one hour and twenty minutes, is now a distant memory, and probably never to be repeated in my lifetime. Out of interest we have just been instructed to sell one of the finest 3 bedroom apartments in this Showcase development at just under £600,000. As I stated in a recent column, buyers looking to acquire a quality home or one requiring work or enlargement, should see the coming Winter months as a golden opportunity to pick up a bargain by getting out there and making offers. e old adage of
What is my prediction for 2012 ? Well as I said earlier one can never be certain. I certainly would not stake a fortune on it, but would be happy to take anyone’s money who wanted to wager on local prices rising. Seasons Greetings to you all, and my best wishes if you are buying, selling, letting or renting. Phillip Leigh is principal of Phillip Leigh Associates of Chigwell. very Christmas, the brave fire fighters at Loughton Fire Station, build a terrific Santa’s Grotto, so that Father Christmas, can drop by and see all the children having fun! e event is organised to support the Burned Children’s Club. We get a chance to be creative.” Teamwork is crucial and as part of their professional day, the fire fighters are close-knit and work together to save lives, helping people involved in accidents and they also educate the local community. ey advise preventative measures, we should all be implementing in order to protect ourselves, such as the importance of safe driving. As Tim was speaking, I recalled the film Ladder 49 with Joaquin Phoenix and John Travolta. is terrific film certainly helped me to 16

understand the horrors and bravery necessary by fire fighters on a daily basis. Tim Wright added: “We work hard on the fireground, often dealing with some horrific stuff.
Car crashes tend to be the worst. In those environments it’s imperative that we work as a team, we help each other out and we look out for each other. Most of us go through some pretty extensive training and we
work hard at the station to maintain that level of professionalism. As an emergency service we are unique. We are there to cover everything that the police or ambulance cannot cover. at

two days this time. Hopefully we will raise twice the amount we did last year for the Burned Children’s Club and make twice as many children happy.” Last year, over £600 was raised for the charity. Fire fighter Ben Pullen, who lives locally and who is also based at Loughton Fire Station added: “'It’s great! We feel that Loughton Fire Station should play a part in providing these type of community based events. It’s something at the station we feel very strongly about. Our job isn’t just about putting out fires and rescuing people - we understand that we have an important role working within the community and helping those who are not as fortunate as ourselves.''
means almost everything. We are medically trained so we are often dealing with casualties, sometimes pretty gory stuff, often on our own waiting for the attendance of the ambulance service. We are trained and equipped to deal with terrorist attacks and water rescue for example.” Covered in this year’s March issue of the magazine, a feature was dedicated to the Essex International Search and Rescue Team. Len Cleary of Loughton Fire Station, was a team member who flew out to New Zealand, to help rescue survivors, trapped in the wreckage. Speaking about the event last year, fire fighter Sharon Blute (who had the idea for a fundraising exercise to raise money for the charity) said: “Last year was only meant to be, a one-off, but it seemed such a shame because the event was a huge success. All the mums and dads really encouraged us to do it again. I think everyone who attended had a fantastic time. Because of this we decided to run the event over
Speaking about last year’s event, sub officer Kevin Roland Leppard, who is the officer in charge at Loughton Fire Station commented: “'Last year It was a real pleasure to see just how happy all the kids were there was a real buzz! It was great, because it was a reflection of the attitude and hard work of everybody involved at Loughton Fire Station. is year the team has worked even harder, but I know how much the fire fighters enjoy the fruits of their labour - which for us means happy kids, happy mums and dads and plenty of money raised for the charity.” With respect to local community work, Tim added: “We liaise with schools and colleges, or cubs or brownies, delivering preventative messages such as the dangers of playing with matches. It’s this diversity that I really love, and sometimes this often gets lost on members of the public. It is not unrealistic to say that in the course of a day we might be saving the life of a member of the public in the morning, then go onto a visit to the local Rainbows of Cubs to show them how the hoses work!”

t seems everyone has heard of cosmetic dentist Ash Parmar. He certainly arrived on the scene with a bang earlier this year with the launch of his state-of-the-art dental practice in Chigwell. But what of the man himself and how he found his way in dentistry? Let’s find out. Ash was born in Kenya in 1969 and moved to the UK when aged 11. His family settled in Ilford and Ash attended local schools. All through his learning, Ash favoured the sciences and when it came to ‘A’ levels he thought about medicine, and training to be a doctor, or dentistry. His choice was confirmed when the Head of his 6th Form organised work experience at a nearby dental practice. “It was a new practice and I was so impressed with what I saw that even though I was only 15 at the time, I made up my mind to go for the subjects I needed to get a place at University.” Next stop was Guys Dental Hospital, one of the top dental institutions, and four and a half years learning his craft. He qualified in 1991 and followed that with Vocational Training for one year at a family dental practice in Chingford. Over the next ten years, Ash would build up a great portfolio as an associate and then a partnership with three flag ship practices in Hornchurch, Barnet and Hertford. It was during this time that he met Jyoti, also a dentist. “We were introduced at a wedding and we just clicked” said Ash. ey married in 1996 and now live in Buckhurst Hill with their two children. Jyoti works part time at the Chigwell Practice providing routine dentistry and also orthodontic treatment.

It was some years before Ash’s vision for dental health became crystal clear. at happened in early 2000 when he met Larry Rosenthal, one of the top cosmetic dentists from New York. “I attended a seminar in London and found him inspirational and life changing” said Ash, who decided cosmetic
dentistry was the way forward for him. “I am a great believer in learning from the very best and that is what I did.” Ash went to the United States to spend time with Larry Rosenthal, whose clientele included Donald Trump, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones. “I also recognized that whatever
cosmetic dentistry you are doing, understanding about the bite and function is fundamental, and if that is not done properly problems can occur.” So, in order to master and implement the techniques needed, Ash then sought out the best dentists in America. en another life changing moment occurred when he met Hilt Tatum, known as the

us to do more.” It was so successful he went on to film three series. Ash was suddenly catapulted into a media world, which came with exceptional national media and press coverage, and he was high on adrenaline as he changed peoples’ lives.
But more was to come. At a dental conference in 2004 at the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Ash met William Dorfman who was the main dentist on Extreme Makeover in USA. Dorfman gave a seminar to 1,000 dentists who in turn gave him a standing ovation because as a result of the TV programme, he had put cosmetic dentistry on the map and significantly increased the profile of dentistry in a positive way. On the plane on the way home, Ash made his decision to contact a TV company in the UK to get interest in a home grown version of the show.
“It was a fabulous experience and one I will remember for the rest of my life” said Ash. “e people we helped, how it changed their lives, and the before and after pictures tell fascinating storylines. I had so many positive testimonials and in many ways I was blessed to be part of it all.”
EXTREME MAKEOVER COMPELS A UK AUDIENCE….. Was it a coincidence then to be approached by a British production company and given the option to be the lead cosmetic dentist on the very first series of Extreme Makeover? “ey gave us the option to film the first series and it went so well they wanted
Ash’s next vision was to open his own practice. e whole of 2010 was spent researching, planning and finding the right property which then needed extensive refurbishment. Word of mouth referrals are increasing all the time and the buzz I get from the emotional reaction when people see the difference not just to their teeth, but their smile and confidence, is so rewarding.” Many people have experienced a “nightmare” at the dentist at some time in their lives. It’s a barrier that is slowly coming down. Ash provides a free initial consultation and offers a unique and comprehensive dental assessment; the best modern technology; digital pictures; and comfortable, pain free treatment.
What of the man when he is off duty? Ash loves golf, swimming, the gym and going to the theatre. His spiritual development is also very important and he wants to put more of his energies into his favourite charity in India: Food for Life Vrindavan -www.fflvrindavan.org. “It’s fantastic the work they do in giving free clothing, education and meals to the poorest of the poor. I have seen the “rough stones” - children off the streets - transformed into “polished jewels” as a result of this work. ” Over and above all else, Ash is a family man. ose family values are all encompassing and help to make him an engaging man who is thoroughly likeable and trustworthy. Dad Bhikhu is also a partner in the business and much valued and respected. “e only reason I have come this far is the total support of my family.” said Ash. “We may have been new to Chigwell, but we feel very much at home here and wanted.” www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk 020 85000544

Rivers Hospital takes the cutting out of Varicose Veins
Rivers Hospital has become one of the select centres in the UK to provide laser varicose vein treatment. This procedure allows varicose veins to be treated without the need for surgeons to cut into the groin. ‘Endovenous laser treatment’ (EVLT) involves passing a laser fibre along the abnormal vein. Using ultrasound to guide the fibre, the surgeon is able to treat the vein without stripping it from the body. The technique means that no overnight hospital stay is needed or general anaesthetic used. This revolutionary procedure minimises the pain and bruising associated with conventional saphenous vein stripping and means that the usual 1-2 weeks off work can be avoided, as the operation is often performed under local anaesthetic. Rivers Hospital also provides 38

Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR DECAY AND FILLINGS As we approach Christmas and will no doubt be eating a lot more, I thought I would write a feature on what causes cavities in teeth, and give advice on the type of restorations available to rebuild damaged teeth. What is decay? Tooth decay is the commonest dental problem that requires treatment. ere are bacteria in the plaque that use the sugar in food and drinks to produce ACID, which dissolves tooth surfaces. is causes cavities i.e. decay. What is the treatment for decay? First and foremost, education and prevention is the key. In children, we offer fissure sealants – these are tooth coloured sealants that help protect the vulnerable fissures on the biting surfaces of the molars and thus avoid decay. In adults, if there is a small or medium sized cavity, then fillings can be done with a laser without the need for injections or drilling. If there is a larger cavity, then a large white filling or a porcelain inlay should be considered. Gold and amalgam fillings are also available. Finally, if the decay is really deep and has reached the nerve, then root canal treatment is required. is intricate treatment is comfortable once the area has been numbed up, but requires increased time and can be expensive. It is ideal to place a crown over a root filled tooth to protect it in the long-term. What are the advantages of tooth coloured (white) fillings? White fillings are bonded to the tooth substance. ey are strong and long lasting. e fillings also
44
DECEMBER2011
AMALGAM FILLING
Chewing sugar free gum following a sweet meal will wash away the acid quicker by increasing the amount of saliva produced in your mouth. 6. Avoid sugary food/drinks last thing at night. A cup of hot chocolate just before bed is not a good idea because whilst sleeping there is no saliva flow. erefore the acid will linger on the teeth longer causing more decay. Summary At Smile Design By Ash, we provide comfortable dental care in a relaxed and unique atmosphere.
TOOTH COLOURED FILLING
look very natural, and there is no mercury content (compared to the silver amalgam fillings). What are the two types of tooth coloured filling? Porcelain inlays or overlays are precision made porcelain fillings that are securely bonded to the teeth. ey are the most cosmetic and strongest white fillings available. is is because porcelain is made from ceramic material, as opposed to conventional white fillings (composites) that are resin based. ey are indicated for large cavities or badly broken down teeth. For small to medium sized cavities, composite fillings are ideal. We have many shades of filling materials to match your teeth perfectly. ese fillings are bonded to the teeth using a special bonding resin. We use a blue light to set the filling hard instantly so you can eat immediately. Careful attention is paid to shaping and polishing the restorations to produce an ideal and smooth finish.
What are the best ways of preventing decay? 1. An annual clinical examination and regular X-rays are essential to detect and monitor decay. 2. Good oral hygiene. Patients who clean their teeth well (i.e. good tooth brushing and daily flossing) should have less decay because more of the plaque (containing bacteria) is removed. 3. Reduce the frequency of sugar intake. It is important to avoid sugary things in between meals. Each time you have something sweet to eat, the acid that is produced causes damage to the teeth for up to one hour. erefore, the more often you have something sweet, the more decay will occur. A packet of polo mints eaten at regular intervals throughout the day can do far more damage than a bar of chocolate eaten in one go! 4. A patient who is at risk from decay should use a fluoride mouthwash (e.g. Colgate Fluoriguard) regularly. Fluoride strengthens the tooth surface (enamel) and helps resist decay. 5. Sugar free chewing gum.
Our Team members are highly professional, friendly and caring. Using the latest and best technologies and dental materials, our goal is to provide healthy, strong and long-lasting restorations. is will avoid repeat dentistry and save you money in the long-term. For further information, visit www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk or phone 020 85000544 for a FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION. We also welcome emergency patients – for an appointment on the same day as your dental emergency, look no further.

SNOW IN THE FOREST
WINTER WALKING
A
happy Christmas to all those who read this column and a big thank you to those who have commented, answered questions etc. It’s been so lovely getting the feedback. As we all approach the festive season, I wish you a great one and a happy and healthy 2012. I love this time of the year and the opportunity to look ahead and plan. I think we all feared that we’d have similar weather this year to last but so far, so good. It’s meant that I’ve enjoyed some amazing autumn walks with my East End Girls and it’s been really warm. Layers have been invaluable and as you know I recommend them for all walking at this time of the year especially. It’s horrible to be too warm or too cold. Over the last couple of months, we’ve walked from Paddington back to Mile End along the canal and also from Mile End to the O2. e latter one has a bit of canal walking first, then along the ames to Island Gardens, through the tunnel where we bought lunch and then walked up to Blackheath through the park and had a picnic there. From our vantage points we could see our destination but the best laid plans meant that we didn’t quite get there in the way we expected so it was the less picturesque route most of the way. One thing you need to be aware of when you go out is the need to 46
DECEMBER2011
have a plan B or at least be able to go off on another track. I often carry an A-Z to find nearest tube stops or alternative routes. I love maps hence the A-Z but of course a GPS on your mobile phone will work just as well. On the walks I’ve mentioned, they are fairly straight forward and there are so many opt out points so you can end at a number of places depending on how far you want to walk, how you feel, what others in your group are capable of etc. ere are also a number of places ‘en route’ to eat or have coffee so all needs catered for. So great to have these options in your locality. I love the way London is so easily accessible as it gives such a range of places to walk. Actually as part of my thank you’s, I need to thank all the wonderful women I walk with whose photos end up emblazoned on the pages of this great publication and which elicit responses from their friends, colleagues and loved ones. ey never know when their happy faces and antics will appear. As you may have gathered I more often than not have my camera with me and more and more I use my phone. I was looking for some photos earlier today to illustrate a blog and I had so much joy looking back through all the memories I’ve captured. I just need to look at photos and all the feelings and happenings of the day come back to me. Having mentioned a blog, I wanted to steer you in the direction of a couple of my blogs. e first is my walking group http://eastendgirls.blogspot.com/. is one get’s updated sometimes before and definitely after a monthly walk. when I take others out they often comment on places they didn’t know. At times when I know I should walk but time is tight, I really think about fitting it into the other things I have to do. Recently a walk has often ended at the bank, dry cleaners, post office or at the supermarket and if the supermarket, I get my weight training too. At the weekend, instead of getting into the car, I walked to deliver some goods and killed two birds with one stone. If you are a convert to walking, you will know the benefits for yourself so please do tell me of your favourite walks, I’m sure I could learn of new places for me. If you’re an arm chair walker as I discussed last month, then keep doing as you were doing but if there is an interest then try it out, have a go.e best way to start is slowly with your goal being to build up the pace to one that is comfortable FROSTY MORNINGS
and I started this in 2008 and hope to cover two sections in 2012 to take us to the French/Spanish border. http://teresaandheatherwalkthecamino.blogspot.com/ I’ve been told that this blog is very inspirational and as well as capturing the stories for us, I’m delighted if it motivates others to walk this too. Let me know what you think. I also made it back to France at the start of November to plan for some breaks including walking in Burgundy and it was glorious. So many great walks to take there so if you’re into walking it’s an area worth exploring and very quiet so no major crowds. It has started to get a little cooler now and earlier this week, I had to up the layers as there was frost first thing. Also added the gloves and scarf and they were really important even though I was able to take them off again later. When it gets colder they’ll stay intact. WALKING ALONG FRENCH LANES I do realise that for some of you, when winter comes, exercise might be the last thing on your mind but what if you could find something that could become part of your life and had an ease to it? Well, that’s walking, often described by health experts as “almost perfect exercise” and, it offers an amazing number of benefits. Would you believe me if I told you that a walk first thing in the morning will set you up for the day ahead? Or that a walk in the cold after a heavy lunch will help your digestion and make you feel wonderful when you return to a warm home and a hot cuppa? My current list has 43 health benefits on it, of which 13 are physical health related and 6 benefits to our mental health so it’s not a bad pedigree. And as 70% of adults don’t take enough exercise to benefit their health, walking would seem to be a great place to start. It’s a low-impact, aerobic exercise suitable for just about everyone regardless of age or size and you can do it where you want, when you want and for as long as you want. Apart from a pair of flat comfortable shoes which are a necessity, you even have your kit with you when traveling. How good is that for your stress relief and wellbeing? Only 30 minutes a day is what is generally prescribed and that’s not too difficult to fit in. Once you get that really built into your schedule you may find that you want to take it further and explore farther afield. Walking really helped me get to know my locality and
for you and where you are able to hold a conversation while you are walking. And remember that although 10,000 steps is what the world’s health experts maintain we need to do a day to keep us healthy, as I said just 30 minutes of brisk walking daily can help prevent disease, maintain weight and improve your mental wellbeing. Even better is the fact that this 30 minutes can be broken down into smaller chunks helping to fit it into your lifestyle. So a walk to the post box and back; up and down stairs instead of using lifts – you know the kind of thing. You will find that walking also improves your self- esteem, relieves symptoms of depression and anxiety, and improves your mood. ose 'feel good' endorphins that give you a healthy natural high, makes your skin glow and helps reduce stress. It relaxes us, burns up the subcutaneous fat layer under the skin giving us better muscle definition and making our skin look less dimpled and tauter and as we tend to eat more healthily, we lose weight and through drinking more water the toxins are removed from our skin as well as the rest of our bodies. Phew! It’s a great protector from winter ills and this is the 6th year in a row now that I have not fallen foul of colds, flu etc. I know it’s my walking and there’s no way I intend to stop. If you fear the sniffles that this time of year brings, invest in building your immune system, get those shoes on and get walking. irstie Allsopp's rushing around thinking about robins, baubles, tinsel and all sorts of Christmas things. While the rest of us probably end up in a last-minute rush untangling decorations and checking the fairy lights, the property and home expert has impressively already chosen her colour theme and even produced a hand-made Robin decoration. "It's really early I know, and not like me," she says with an apologetic smile. "Normally, it's well into December before I get myself organised, but I've been able to 'cheat' this year as I've done bits and pieces over the last few months as part of my work." Allsopp's been able to steal a march on the rest of us as some of her projects for her latest Channel Four TV series, Kirstie's Handmade Britain, have been Christmas-focused. "I've always had the children's home-made decorations and now I'm going to have my own - I'm hoping to make a few more robins if I have time. It gives the tree a lovely personal feel," she says. It will be a getaway Christmas for the presenter, who's leaving London and spending the festive season in her family holiday home in Devon, with her partner, Ben Andersen, their two sons, Bay, five, and Oscar, three, and Andersen's sons from his previous marriage, Orion 11, and Hal, eight. "We can have an enormous real tree there, which Ben staggers home with and then puts up with me shouting instructions. "e boys and I have a great time choosing what to go on it," she says with a beam. "I absolutely love decorations and put a lot of time into making the whole house look really festive. I'm certainly not a puritan about the 'look' honestly, you can't have too much colour and sparkle," she says. Allsopp says there's no need to stress about seasonal decor. "It's a time of year when you 52

"I like the tree and the table to have the same colours, and find that lots of greenery - holly and ivy - is a calming, natural contrast to the fussy detail of decorations. sparkle. You can wrap it along stair rails, or use it to tie a name label to each chair," she adds. She dresses her table with a garland of holly and ivy down the centre, entwined around large silver and glass candlesticks, and intersperses tubs of red poinsettias. Tesco & Sainsbury's have a glorious selection of red and white decorations, too. Kirstie Allsopp's guide to making Christmas decorations and garlands are on Youtube. Search for 'Kirstie Allsopp' and 'B&Q'. WHITE WONDERLAND "White and silver, with green foliage, is my favourite theme this year," says Chrissie Rucker, founder of e White Company. "I like the home to look magical and use trails of greenery intertwined with baubles and fairy lights for the mantelpiece, the stair bannisters and on the hall table. "As well as decorating the tree, this year I'm using burnished silver and vintage style glass decorations. I thread two or three baubles on to a
pretty ribbon and hang it in front of windows, mirrors and pictures, and from door and cupboard handles. "Wreaths are so versatile and I often hang one over the dining table, or lay one flat and fill it with three big white pillar candles." SWITCH ON TO THE LIGHT FANTASTIC

TRIP THE LIGHT FANTASTIC WITH A SELECTION OF LIGHTS, FROM CHANDELIERS TO LAMPS, TO SUIT EVERY SETTING. GABRIELLE FAGAN FINDS OUT HOW TO BANISH THE GLOOM.
By Gabrielle Fagan
L
ights, camera, action - the new focus for interiors is on winter lighting which transforms rooms into stunning settings. In recent years, designers have turned the spotlight on everything from pendants to the humble table lamp - and the effects are magical. Myriad influences have inspired designs, including flights of fancy featuring pets and jungle creatures, the equipment used on film sets and in photographers' studios, and, naturally, glamour with crystal and bling adorning even simple shades. While designers set the trend, it comes at a price. But these days the high street is quick to follow with affordable replicas so there's no need to feel left in the dark if your budget's tight. Follow the lighting lead of the Prime Minister's wife, Samantha Cameron, who recently paid only a couple of hundred pounds for a reproduction of a classic Arco floor lamp, shunning the £1,600 price tag for an original. "Samantha Cameron's not alone in choosing a reproduction of a classic," says David Gutfreund, managing director of Iconic Lights which sells the reproduction version.

"Many interior designers and architects specify reproduction products, particularly during the current challenging economic times. "Only people with more money than sense would pay as much as six times more for the same thing. I believe if the designer Castiglioni was alive today, he would approve of our reproduction, and find it hard to tell the difference." Here's my guide to the best designer buys and their money-saving equivalents on the high street. TAKE THE FLOOR Floor lamps languished in the shade for years, but they're
enjoying huge popularity again because they're so versatile and decorative. LET IT BLING For full-on glamour, nothing beats a chandelier as a focal point in a room. Splurge: e Helena large ceiling spiral pendant, £850 (currently on offer at £595), is a stunner from Laura Ashley. Save: Mimic the sparkle with a mini Astoria easy-fit pendant, £39.99, from Homebase. Alternatively, the new kid on the block is the Shadelier: a shade incorporating delicate hanging crystals. It could suit any setting. Splurge: A Leo Black Easy-fit ceiling beaded pendant, with frosted glass droplets and a metallic gold lining, available in black or white, £80 from Laura Ashley (currently on offer from £56). Save: A Cover floor lamp, £289, is a more pared-down version but still does the business, from BoConcept.
