Welcome to our January issue. PUBLISHED BY THE FISH MEDIA GROUP LTD. THE RIDINGS, WOODFIELD LANE, ESSENDON, HERTS, AL9 6JJ

Happy New Year to all of our readers from the team here at Fish Media Group. is is certainly going to be a big and important year. Last year we enjoyed the fabulous royal wedding… Recreationally, a highlight was the opening of Westfield Shopping Centre. As for words, according to Peggy Noonan of the Wall Street Journal, the best words stated in 2011 were attributed to Steve Jobs, as he very sadly passed away last October – “Oh wow. Oh wow. Oh wow.” – Steve Jobs. We take a look at the exciting year ahead.

We certainly live amongst some truly great people… this year’s honours list again, highlights some outstanding, local resident. To elaborate on the background of the OBE, e Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, it was established on 4th June 1917 by the reigning monarch, George V. e Order comprises of five classes for two divisions: civil and military. We take a closer look at our local residents who became a member of the wonderful club. King Solomon’s Art Department is exceptional. As great talent is developed, nourished and nurtured, it is not surprising to learn that one of their ex-pupils is launching an exhibition at the London Jewish Cultural Museum (Golders Green) to mark National Holocaust Memorial Day. e London Jewish Cultural Centre’s (LJCC) FUSION department has been working closely with Ela Ward, 18. Ela was born in Israel and lived in both Tel Aviv and Eilat before arriving to Chigwell in 2004. She enrolled at King Solomon High School and from an experience as part of a school trip, felt inspired to develop the creativity needed for the series of canvases now being exhibited. e school had organised a visit to Auschwitz and the personal response, changed her life. Inspired by her emotions, she used this energy to enhance the creativity necessary to express how she felt. e trip was especially poignant because of her Jewish heritage and bond with Israel. e paintings were also used as part of her art A-level. Currently, she is studying for a fine art degree at Nottingham Trent University. Her phenomenal talent has certainly brought a great deal of attention which hopefully will be just the start, for such an aspiring and talented young artist.

Who doesn’t have an iPhone or iPod? How many of us non-Mac users, wish we had one (that includes me!) And the iPad too? So with whatever happened in those last few delicate moments, even on his deathbed, he offered enlightenment and total expression about his feelings and thoughts, as he left one world and ventured into another… But moving forward, this year it’s the Olympics and controversially, how many of us succeeded in obtaining some of those infamous tickets? I only know a handful of people who received an exciting confirmation.

As elusive as Willy Wonka’s golden tickets, only a few lucky locals will be going to the Games. e rest of us, like always, will only be able to watch via television, iPhone, iPad or laptop. Whether locally in Stratford or across the world in Beijing – we’ll still be sitting in our lounges, television rooms, or wherever we can access WIFI, perched and cheering for our own satisfaction and excitement, rather than being part of an unforgettable experience. If interested in details of the events, it would be worth checking out the Essex Legacy website: www.essexlegacy.org. Based at Essex County Council, their mission

statement (displayed on their website) is to help promote Essex and many other exciting initiatives relevant to our area. If you prefer reading books to watching athletic bodies – there’s the Essex Book Festival. “I find television to be very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go in the other room and read a book.” Groucho Marx Although one of my favourite quotes, Groucho didn’t have SKY+. e fantastic Essex Book Festival begins in March and will have, many exciting events all over Essex, particularly, Loughton and Brentwood. Tickets are now being sold, so if like Groucho, you prefer to curl up with a book, rather than to curl up with the

television remote, check out their website and download the brochure for more details: www.essexbookfestival.org.uk .

Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE)

CHIGWELL Gavin Davis. Formerly political officer, Helmand Provincial Reconstruction Team, Department for International Development.

Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE) Immediately upon release of the latest list, I eagerly scanned for local names

BRENTWOOD Paul Eskritt – Lately principal security and contingency planning adviser, City of London Corporation. For services to local government.

Another interesting local resident honoured with an OBE, is Ellis Rich of High Road, Chigwell. A music industry veteran, who now runs his own group of publishing companies, was awarded an OBE last year. However, he has another claim to fame? He employed Simon Cowell at the start of his career! It’s amazing what starts in Essex… Maybe the X Factor should be renamed – the EsseX Factor? So Essex continues to feature in the news and for a multiple of reasons. Essex is a great county and whether near the London borders or further out towards Brentwood, with so much history and so many interesting characters, it is not possible to ever tire of Essex! ith books stacked to the ceiling, my home and shelves are the physical testament to my many years of travelling, preferred authors, poets, playwrights or shelves of academia for ongoing research and education. I remind myself of favourite quotes, sentences, or in the infinite pursuit of an inspired, literary education by understanding and analysing the true and timeless great writers. As a result, my home is rather more like a library than a house, but every book has a place, they become old and trusted friends and my shelves, a familiar place of refuge when I prefer to dive into another world for pleasure or professional development. So I keep my books – I also keep a record of all the Essex magazines published by Fish Media and in this respect, this feature is a literary trek back to 2011 and with thoughts and reflections for some of my preferred features, and also from others, who regularly contribute to the magazines. 14

JANUARY2012

JANUARY 2011 EPPING’S HEROES AND TWO WORLD WARS It is always humbling to read about the commitment, courage and bravery of those who are prepared to offer their lives so that others can enjoy freedom and liberty. As part of my contribution to the magazine, I look to vary the topics in order to appeal to as wide an audience as possible. is feature was very interesting to research and helped me to understand even more, the exciting and incredible history of our local areas. Of all the quotes studied this last year, one of the most touching was a published letter, written by a soldier from Epping. “I cannot express my feelings in words … it helps us out here to know that people of the old town are thinking of us.” Excerpt from a letter by Trooper A. Juniper (died in October 1918) If passing the War Memorial, please take a few moments to reflect our local heroes.

FEBRUARY 2011 LAUNCH PARTY: SMILE DESIGN BY ASH Since Ash’s return to Chigwell in 2010, he has certainly made an impact with both his outstanding and talented dental skills together with the launch of his designer practice. With a 5 star hospitality ambiance and customer service, his surgery has been a great addition to the services offered in our areas. As a regular contributor to the magazine, Ash’s articles are always informative and well-written. ey help to educate us about teeth, dental services and preventative measures as part of our daily maintenance. I felt very privileged to be a guest at this fabulous party. e feature was a great introduction to Ash as both a leading dentist and family man. APRIL 2011 THE ROYAL WEDDING OF PRINCE WILLIAM AND KATE MIDDLETON A brilliantly written piece (not sure by whom) which made

this month’s edition of the magazine, a souvenir certainly worth keeping. Beautiful photographs, interesting historical facts and also an informative background of Westminster Abbey. MAY 2011 YOUNG URBAN ART AFICIONADO RAISES OVER £13,000 FOR LOCAL CHILDREN’S HOSPICE As a community that works and supports each other, coverage for good deeds is always well-covered in these magazines. With this particular feature, a 16 year old (Liam Patel from Wanstead) raised £13,320 at Dreweatts’ Auction House in London to raise funds for the very important, Haven House Children’s Hospice. I have met some of the children and during the tour, saw the facilities which support the children and also their families. Any initiative to help the crucial funding necessary to maintain the

hospice is to be promoted. In this feature, a talented and entrepreneurial teenager spent a year and a half, organising donations by artists, for the auction. Am sure we will be hearing more from Liam Patel… JULY/AUGUST 2011 WANSTEAD EXHIBITION CELEBRATES THE LITERARY GREATS FROM ESSEX As part of my ongoing commitment to the magazines, I look for interesting facts about the areas. One of the year’s highlights was the realisation that Lt. Col. T. E. Lawrence, wrote Seven Pillars of Wisdom (Lawrence of Arabia) on Pole Hill from a hut… Also the influence of Essex upon Alfred Tennyson, John Clare and William Morris. is exhibition was entitled: Literary Footsteps in the Forest. “e simple joys of Epping Forest have inspired writers and poets for centuries…” Steven Denford – City of London, Researcher e City of London support some incredibly interesting exhibitions and it is always worth keeping an eye out, for their forthcoming events in our areas. OCTOBER 2011 PHILLIP LEIGH REGULAR CONTRIBUTOR FOR THE LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET I really enjoy Phillip’s features. His features are an insight into his character and also his expertise for the local property market. I believe he’s been in the area over 40 years so has certainly seen every aspect from highs to slumps. His advice is hard-hitting, insightful and his features always interesting with an expert’s views and knowledge

of the local areas. DECEMBER 2011 GET YOUR SKATES ON … Ice-skating has certainly become very popular and this carefully researched and well-written feature suggested some great venues for family fun and entertainment. e

Christmas break is a few weeks and after the initial excitement of Christmas itself and the parties, sometimes, we need more ideas to help us enjoy this time-off with family and friends. e ideas presented, together with all booking information was very good and although not relevant now, may help inspire

some thoughts for next Christmas… I do hope you enjoyed this feature and if you would like to write to me with your preferred features with a few words as to why – it would be good to hear from you. Please contact me direct: Michelle@starcopywriting.com

LOCAL LIFE

Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET How lovely it was to see all of the smiling faces returning from their long winter break in the Caribbean, the USA and Spain, the latter surprisingly this year apparently enjoying equal amounts of sunshine. All eager to beat down our door begging to have the opportunity of paying the full asking price for any property on our books. Don’t believe me ? I am surprised!! My latest saying being… “trust me I am an estate agent.” OK maybe it’s not quite like that yet, and it will possibly be a long while before it will turn into a reality. But trust me it will, and when it does, we will all be kicking ourselves for missing some of the fantastic opportunities that are around at the moment.

I have personally been retained to acquire small portfolios of apartments for clients with budgets of between five and ten million pounds. ese canny folk are looking to lock the stock away for ten years or so and hope to benefit from inflation over the period. If you have a property that you feel may be of interest please call me. We are fully retained and therefore no commission is required. MANOR HALL, NOW TO RENT

makes sense for them to stay put despite the fact that their current home is totally unsuitable for their present needs. BROOK HOUSE COTTAGE, EXECUTORS SALE, £550,000

My report this week is mainly to reprise where we left off prior to Christmas as it really is too early to forecast how 2012 will roll out. Interest is still good at the lower end of the local market, that is flats below £500,000 and houses below £600,000. Interest in flats above £500,000 is extremely weak and interest above £1 million pound is virtually non existent. Likewise with houses. Very few were offered for sale above £2 million in 2011 and of those only a handful found buyers. e reason for this phenomena is in many cases quite simple. In the main the majority of high end properties are owned by people who funded their purchase with the aid of self certified “interest only” mortgages, which in many cases were taken out at very low “tracker rates”. It therefore

DICKENS RISE, EXECUTORS SALE, £475,000

ey now represent a growing group of “locked-in” property owners who are asset rich yet cash poor. Unless the current economic climate ends soon, which is about as likely as the opening to this article, then I can’t envisage this situation changing. Unless, of course, interest rates start to rise which will put pressure on these owners who are highly geared to sell. is will, in my view. eventually have to happen but unlikely in 2012.

In short, it seems inevitable that the status quo is something we will have to learn to live with and it could be that in time we will accept it as the norm and adjust our lives and expectations accordingly. e lower end of the market is, I am delighted to say, extremely buoyant and I would recommend that you scan through our website if you are looking for an affordable home to live in, or as an investment. I mention the latter for surprise-surprise, the buy to let market is on the move again and probably represents 50% of the deals being agreed over the past two or three months. ere is some extremely competitive finance being offered by several Banks and Building Societies and I would recommend that as long as you require no more than 60% or 70% finance, you take advantage of the current situation. It would be wise to get your finance sorted before you start your search as this could help you to pick up a cheap property that has to be sold quickly. If you require any advice or help in this respect feel free to call.

Our letting division is extremely busy and have successfully let several apartments in new developments in Chigwell and Woodford. We have been retained as sole letting Agent for the fabulous Manor Hall, which is a development of spacious apartments and penthouses, which start at just under £2,500 per month. is represents excellent value for the tenant considering that the Landlords picks up all the Management and Maintenance charges. Call Craig now for viewing. We are now in the middle of the football transfer window and although at the time of writing few comings and goings have affected the Football Clubs to whom we are advisors. We expect by the time you read this piece we will have a good demand for quality homes in this area, A Happy and Healthy 2012 to you all. SLEEP 1 Caption by Ela Ward Oil on sheet on a board support

Reproduced in its entirety with kind permission from Ela Ward and LJCC.

This work was painted directly onto bed sheets and a pillow. The blue and white striped pattern is strongly associated with the uniforms of concentration camp victims. The colours, however, also represent the colours of Judaism, seen on the Tallit (prayer shawl) and the flag of Israel, thus symbolising potential freedom. Onto these bed sheets I have painted the words of the poem ‘The Witch’ by Auschwitz survivor Primo Levi. It speaks of a woman reluctant to let go of a loved one, as she moulds an image of him out of wax, and throws it into a fire ‘with leaves of grapevine, olive and oak’. A grapevine is regarded as an image of the Jewish people and the grapevine is also the Messiah’s tree. The olive is a symbol of peace as a dove brought back an olive branch to Noah to show that the flood was over. The oak is a symbol of strength and endurance. Layered above the subject in this painting are pairs of spectacles representing the piles of victim’s glasses that you see at Auschwitz. They act as a reminder of the horrors seen through the eyes of those who once wore them. The pillow is untouched, how hard it must have been to sleep amongst all of this sorrow. As well as using bed sheets and pillows, the painting is also built up of mud, that became the final resting place for so many and random feathers taken from the pillow, as symbols of peace, freedom and release. Again I have superimposed the painting onto parts of a map of Eastern Europe. Vienna can be seen over the girls face representing a population of 170,000 Jews who lived there in 1938 and Hungary, which once was home to 825,000 Jews, can be seen in the bottom right hand corner.

LOCAL CHIGWELL STUDENT LAUNCHES ART EXHIBITION CELEBRATING ELA WARD Words: Michelle Harris

K

ing Solomon’s Art Department is exceptional. Currently, she is studying for a fine art degree at Nottingham Trent

University. Her phenomenal talent has certainly brought a great deal of attention which hopefully will be just the start, for such an aspiring, young artist. Talking about her art and background, Ela commented, “e school has a fantastic art department which has really helped me. Also the trip to Poland was very emotional. Before going to Israel and other countries, all my family were originally from Eastern Europe, so this trip took me back to my roots, which is why it had such an impact.” Speaking about the exhibition, she added: “I’m so happy and couldn’t have asked for anything more. I am really grateful to the LJCC for this exhibition.” e LJCC are as equally excited by Ela. In an exclusive interview, Julia Weiner, Curator at the LJCC stated: “We don’t normally display students’ work but upon receipt of the images, they were so strong and powerful that I wanted to see more. “e works are 8’ by 4’ which is extraordinary for an 18 year old. She has also written texts to accompany her work which are so incisive and display how deeply, she has thought about the Holocaust, Israel and her Jewish roots.

Ela Ward at Private View. Courtesy of Adrian Dell

“When you see the original she doesn’t just use paint, she uses other materials. Her self-portrait, dreaming about the Holocaust, is painted on bed linen including a pillow. e bed linen is striped to reflect the uniforms and the prisoners but also a prayer shawl and the Israeli flag. She has taken a feather out of the pillow as an image of hope and freedom. ere is so much depth to the paintings. You don’t normally see this in the work of someone so young.” e LJCC hopes to continue their relationship with King Solomon to further careers of other young artists, as part of the Art House Community.

We all wish Ela continued success and look forward to seeing her gain even more recognition and acclaim. Good Luck … Exhibition: My Jewish Roots / Paintings by Ela Ward London Jewish Cultural Centre, Ivy House, 94-96 North End Road, London NW11 7SX Dates: 10 January – 1 February 2012 (various times) For more details about the exhibition, please see the www.ljcc.org.uk.

Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR COMPREHENSIVE DENTAL ASSESSMENT I have seen many patients in the last year at Smile Design By Ash who were seeing another dentist and wanted to join our Practice as a new patient. I am amazed at the number of dental problems that remain undiagnosed. is means the patient has a false sense of security that everything is OK, and certain problems like gum disease carry on progressing painlessly. Why do British people seem to have so many dental problems? A: I think there are many reasons for this. About 50% of people do not go to a dentist regularly. Some people may have had a bad experience as a child, which puts them off having dental treatment. Education and lack of dental knowledge is also another important reason – it is the dentist’s responsibility to advise properly regarding how to prevent dental problems (e.g. visit http://www.smiledesignbyash.co. uk/general-dentistry/top-tips-toavoid-long-term-problems to find out great ways to have a healthy mouth and avoid dental treatment). rough neglect, teeth and gums get worse. e longer this is left, the more complex and expensive the treatment will be. Why is the Comprehensive Dental Assessment done by you unique and different to a dental examination carried out by most other dentists? We offer a normal dental examination and X-rays for patients with few or no dental problems – this is adequate. However, if someone is considering cosmetic dentistry, has missing or worn down & damaged teeth, then a detailed dental assessment is required.

34

JANUARY2012

Our signature 2-hour dental evaluation includes: • Digital Photographs – Photos of your face, smile and teeth for planning the treatment • Digital X-Rays - Assessment of the teeth and surrounding bone health • Study Models - Replica moulds for assessment of the teeth and bite • Smile Analysis - A detailed and unique survey of the smile • Oral Cancer Screen - Review of the soft tissues • Bite Assessment – We have the most sophisticated computer bite recording equipment in the world (called T Scan) which helps patients that suffer from headaches and bite related problems • Assessment of the teeth and dental restorations – A complete review of every tooth including the integrity and status of all fillings • Gum Health - orough analysis of the gum health including gum measurements, and a scoring system to measure plaque and bleeding levels (to confirm the level of gum disease) • Professional, personalized report – A detailed report with all your treatment options carefully explained, with all relevant estimates

But what is the benefit of having this thorough assessment? e main benefit is that the patient can feel very confident that nothing has been missed. An accurate diagnosis of the dental condition can be reached and therefore correct treatment recommendations can be made. It is, of course, down to the individual to then choose which of the recommended treatment should be done. By doing things properly and having a totally preventative approach to ensure optimum health will mean long lasting restorations and avoid repeat dentistry, saving a lot of money and problems in the long run. What if I need a lot of treatment, how can I make it more affordable? We offer interest free finance plans over 2 years. is means that you can assign an affordable monthly budget to spread your payments out. is allows you to immediately have the dental treatment to achieve the smile you want, or reach dental health without a large investment up front. In the current tough economic times, many of our clients have benefited from this increasingly popular concept! Can treatment be done in stages? A: Absolutely! We always start with the Comprehensive Dental Assessment. Initially, getting the

gums healthy is a priority. is involves seeing the Hygienist for one or more treatment sessions. If there are any loose or badly damaged teeth, these should be extracted. We then normally get all the fillings done so that all the teeth become healthy. Any cosmetic concerns are then addressed so that the patient has a naturally attractive smile that they love. If there are missing teeth, then implants or other options to replace missing teeth can be considered. SPECIAL OFFER FOR LIFE MAGAZINE READERS To celebrate our 1st anniversary as a dental practice in January this year, I would like to offer all Life magazine readers who wish to benefit from the Comprehensive Dental Assessment a special saving of £100 i.e. the fee will be £195 rather than the normal fee of £295. is offer will be valid for anyone who books the 2-hour dental assessment appointment by the end of February 2012. You are also welcome to visit our Practice for a FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION to meet my Team and I. Please phone Petya, ` our Patient Coordinator on 020 85000544, or visit our informative website www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk to find out more.

THE PROBLEM More and more people are becoming overweight as the calories they consume are not used up through exercise and everyday life. These unused calories are stored in our body as fat. Many overweight people will find it difficult to exercise or even to move around normally, and their everyday life will be affected by their weight. In the long term, being overweight can increase the chances of developing serious conditions such as type II diabetes, heart conditions and hypertension. It can also affect people’s self-confidence and self-esteem.

We offer a structured year-long programme to help patients safely lose the maximum amount of weight and cope with any problems along the way. BENEFITS OF WEIGHT LOSS There is increasing evidence that losing excess weight can offer long-term health benefits to seriously overweight people. These include Many overweight patients with diabetes find this improves after surgery and weight loss Improvements in conditions such as high blood pressure and sleep problems The majority of patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease who lost weight after surgery saw an improvement in their condition - or in some cases the condition disappeared A reduction in the chances of getting weight related health problems such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes

Many people are advised to lose weight by their GP but find this difficult, even if they diet or try to exercise more. Weight loss surgery may be an option for some of them. WHO CAN BENEFIT? Weight loss surgery - also known as bariatric surgery - can help many people but it is not recommended for every one. It is a lifelong - and often life-changing - decision. However, there is increasing evidence that it can lead to health benefits including improvements or even reversal of some conditions, such as type II diabetes.

RAMSAY HEALTHCARE’S PREMIUM CARE Patients who choose to have weight loss surgery with us receive the highest quality care in all aspects of their treatment. Rapid access to expert opinion and treatment Appointment times to suit No long wait for treatment Single bedded rooms with ensuite bathroom and flat screen TV Everything needed to make their stay as comfortable as possible such as a daily newspaper and welcome pack

The National Institute for Clinical Excellence recommends patients should be considered for bariatric surgery if their body mass index is 40kg/m2 or more or if it is over 35kg/m2 with a significant disease which could be improved by weight loss (body mass is calculated by looking at weight and height). They must have tried non-surgical methods to lose weight without much success for at least six months. Patients must also receive intensive specialist weight management, be fit for anaesthesia and surgery, and commit to the need for long-term follow up.

HOW TO ACCESS TREATMENT

Contact Rivers Hospital on 01279 602644 to book an appointment or for more information. Treatment may be covered by medical insurance and self pay packages are available on request.

TIME TO PUT YOUR HEALTH FIRST TO HELP IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH IN THE NEW YEAR, DOCTORS, ACADEMICS AND HEALTH ORGANISATIONS OFFER UP THEIR TOP RESOLUTIONS BE A QUITTER BY LISA SALMON TV doctor Hilary Jones points out that quitting smoking is one of the most effective ways a person can improve their health. When people give up tobacco, their circulation and respiration improve within a month and, depending on how heavy a smoker they've been, the risk of heart disease and lung cancer become similar to that of a lifelong non-smoker within just a few years: "If you haven't already, this is the year to quit smoking. It's the greatest single step you can take to ensure future good health, and hundreds of thousands of other smokers have now successfully done this," he says. Visit www.nhs.uk/smokefree to find out more about the NHS Quit Kit. OUT FROM THE DESK It can be a struggle for office-bound workers to find time to exercise, say experts, and as a result, fitness levels can suffer. e National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) suggests both employees and employers resolve to make health in the workplace a priority in the New Year. Professor Mike Kelly, public health director at NICE, points out that physical activity is essential for good health, contributing to both physical and mental wellbeing. It also helps to prevent or manage conditions including heart disease, diabetes, some cancers and obesity. "Workers aren't always active enough to benefit their health, so we're recommending ways that employers can encourage staff to increase their levels of physical activity on their way to work, or during the day." ese include providing information about walking or cycling routes and encouraging employees to walk or cycle some or all of the way to and from work, and also putting up signs to encourage staff to use the stairs. Becoming more active is also recommended by Arthritis Research UK, who have funded research exploring the connection between healthy bodies and pain-free joints. "is year we're recommending that instead of relying on painkillers, people with back pain try yoga," says Professor Alan Silman, medical director at Arthritis Research UK, who points out that 80% of the population suffer from back pain at some point in their lives. "Yoga provides real, positive benefits for people with chronic low back pain, plus there are no side effects." For more information on the Yoga For Healthy Lower Backs 38

health beauty programme, visit www.yogaforbacks.co.uk FOOD FOR THOUGHT Feeding your body a nutritious diet goes hand in hand with maintaining physical fitness. But it can be easier said than done. One way to maintain healthy eating resolutions is by keeping a food diary, suggest MEND (Mind, Exercise, Nutrition... Do it!), who run family healthy eating and fitness programmes. ey suggest writing down everything you eat and drink after it's consumed, and then you can begin identifying your dietary strengths and weaknesses. For example, you might notice a tendency to snack at certain points in the day or recognise there's not enough nutritional variety in your diet. "Only once we identify the factors impacting on our food choices and patterns - and see when and why we're doing things the way we are - can we work on breaking any habits contributing to them," says Lucy Hannagan of MEND. "Whether you're trying to lose weight in the New Year, or just get healthier by increasing your five-a-day of fruit and vegetables, keeping a food diary can help." In addition, dehydration can be a reason people choose to snack, as they mistake thirst for hunger. Dr Roger Henderson points out that dehydration can also lead to more severe symptoms such as fatigue and headaches, and is a more common problem than many realise. "Drink more water," he stresses. "I'm aiming to make sure I always have a glass by me when working during 2012." CHECK IT OUT As well as taking steps to improve your health at the start of 2012, it may be an idea to check your current physical condition. Adults who have not seen their GP for three years are entitled to a general health check-up. is will usually include height and weight measurements, a blood pressure check, and cholesterol and blood sugar tests. In addition, the British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) suggest an oral examination. "ere's an increasing body of clinical evidence of the systemic links between poor oral health and some of the biggest causes of serious poor health and death in the UK," stresses chief executive Dr Nigel Carter. Gum disease, he explains, may contribute to a furring of the arteries, which can cause heart disease. Also, those with gum disease are nearly twice as likely to develop diabetes. A resolution to maintain good oral health, he suggests, should include brushing teeth with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes twice a day, cleaning in between your teeth using interdental brushes or floss, cutting down on sugary foods and drinks, and visiting the dentist regularly. Another area that people can overlook is their skin, say the British Association of Dermatologists (BAD). e organisation suggests people resolve to check their skin regularly (at least once a month) for any new moles, or a mole that's changing rapidly, as well as changes to patches of skin. Parents are also advised to send their children for regular eye tests by the Childhood Eye Cancer Trust. is will not only pick up any problems with vision, but also signs of more serious eye conditions. Finally, resolve to check your medicine cabinet, suggests Leyla Hannbeck of the National Pharmacy Association (NPA). A recent survey found many people never check their medicines are still in date, she points out. "e New Year can be a good time to have a clear out of your cabinet. Medicines can become increasingly less effective once they pass their expiry date," she says. Visit www.bad.org.uk/sunawareness for information on checking your skin.

HOW TO FIND YOUR COLOUR OF THE YEAR

2012 HAS BEEN DUBBED THE YEAR OF TANGERINE TANGO COLOUR BY PANTONE. LISA HAYNES REVEALS HOW TO FIND THE MOST FLATTERING SHADES FOR YOUR COLOURFUL YEAR AHEAD. BY LISA HAYNES JANUARY2012 47

elcome to the year of Tangerine Tango. e global authority on colour, Pantone, has designated the reddish orange as its colour of the year in succession to Honeysuckle pink. e vibrant shade is now being touted as a go-to in cosmetics because of its versatility. It's exotic but in a friendly, non-threatening way, according to the Pantone colour gurus. But whether you dance to the tune of Tangerine Tango for your lips, nails or even eyes, it's clear the 2012 tone won't be for everyone. When refreshing your make-up bag for January, the key to finding your own colour of the year lies in your hair and complexion. "Understanding your colouring is the next step in helping you to achieve a perfect make-up look," explains Pat Henshaw, co-author of new book Colour Me Beautiful Make-up Manual. "e aim is to create balance and harmony between your natural colouring and the colours of clothes and make-up you wear." By wearing your own bespoke brand of make-up shades, Henshaw believes you will not only feel good but look younger, healthier and fitter. Here's how to discover your colour palette for 2012 and beyond:

LIGHT Your overall look is pale and delicate. e undertone of your colouring can be warm, with golden tints to your hair and a few freckles on your skin, or cool, with ash tones to your hair and a slight pinkish tint to your skin. Light celebrities: Uma urman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Meryl Streep. Make-up mantra: It's all about adding subtle definition to your Light features. "Give a hint of colour to eyebrows and eyelashes - a warm brown mascara will be more flattering than black," Henshaw advises. "Try not to overpower your delicate colouring with strong shades of eye shadow or lipstick, even when it comes to more glamorous make-up. Instead, use the right colours from your palette and apply them in different ways." Palette: Medium grey, light navy, cocoa and taupe for neutrals. Pastel pink, geranium, sky blue and apple green for accents. DEEP Your skin can be porcelain to black but all your features - hair, eyebrows, eyes and lashes - are dark and defined so your make-up should be similarly deep and rich in tone. Deep celebrities: Halle Berry, Penelope Cruz, Audrey Tautou. Make-up mantra: Your features have a lot of depth to them and stand out on their own. "Accentuate your look by complementing it with dark, rich colours, even when it comes to more subtle daytime looks," Henshaw suggests. "Blushers will add some depth to balance your colouring. Lipsticks 48

in rich shades will look fantastic on you. However, if you prefer softer colours, you will need to ensure that your face is balanced with strong make-up." Palette: Black, aubergine, chocolate and pine for neutrals. Royal purple, scarlet, emerald green and true blue for accents.

WARM You're the golden girl of complexions with skin tone ranging from porcelain with freckles to golden brown. Auburn hair tones go as light as strawberry blonde to dark rich red. Warm celebrities: Christina Hendricks, Susan Sarandon, Florence Welch. Make-up mantra: To enhance your warm and rich colouring, your make-up should always have yellow undertones. Henshaw advises: "Brown eye pencils and mascara flatter more than black for both day and night. "Choose a blush powder with a warm undertone and simply apply with a bit more depth depending on the time of day or occasion. Whether you want subtle lip colour or more dramatic lips, keep your lip colour warm with lovely, golden earthy tones." Palette: Bronze, olive, pewter and camel for neutrals. Apricot, primrose, terracotta and lime for accents.

COOL You have blue, grey or cool brown eyes and ash tones to your hair, be it blonde, white, grey, salt and pepper, dark brown or black. Your colouring may have become cooler as you've aged. Cool celebrities: Jamie Lee Curtis, Dame Helen Mirren, Dame Judi Dench. Make-up mantra: Make the most of your distinctive colouring by wearing make-up colours with a cool or blue undertone. "Most cools have a striking look, so don't be afraid to use brighter shades of lipstick and colours that will define your eyes," says Henshaw.

health beauty "Cool, blue-based tones of eye shadows, blush and lipstick will always look best on you regardless of what look you are trying to achieve. Take your barely-there make-up up a notch by defining the eye area and do so with grey, blue and lilac shades of eye shadows and eye pencils." Palette: Charcoal, dark navy, spruce and purple for neutrals. Light teal, rose pink, cornflower and blue red for accents.

CLEAR Your most outstanding features are your eyes, which are highlighted because of the contrast to your dark hair. ey will have a clear, jewel-like quality to them. Clear celebrities: Carla Bruni, Kate Middleton, Mila Kunis. Make-up mantra: Your eye make-up shades should always enhance and not detract from your eye colour. "As a Clear, you can have the choice of making a feature of your eye make-up or your lipstick but not both," warns Henshaw. "Forget the rules about matching your eye shadow to your eye colour - it will only make your eyes blend in with your look and you really should make them pop. Bright colours are great during the day, whereas an aubergine pencil with purple eye shadow will be more glamorous for evenings." Palette: Black, black brown, royal blue and soft white for neutrals. Blush pink, ruby, Chinese blue and evergreen for accents.

SOFT You may have found a little of yourself in each of the previous colouring types, but didn't fit exactly. You have medium depth of skin tone, blonde to dark brown eyebrows and mousy blonde to light brown hair - often with highlights. Soft celebrities: Scarlett Johansson, Beyonce, Kim Cattrall. Make-up mantra: e gentle combination of your hair, skin and eyes means that your make-up needs to be soft and subtle - but you still need colour and definition. Henshaw advises: "Your Soft colouring needs to be complemented with muted tones. Anything that is too bright or dark will detract from your face. "Your eyebrows should always be defined with a blonde eyebrow pencil, while your eyes need to be lined with soft browns or mossy shades, not black." Palette: Rose brown, charcoal, charcoal blue and stone for neutrals. Claret, sage, soft violet and lavender for accents. Henshaw's money saving tip: "Once you understand your colouring type and your best make-up shades, you can limit the cosmetics that you buy, investing only in those that will make you look fabulous." Colour Me Beautiful Make-up Manual by Pat Henshaw and Audrey Hanna is published by Hamlyn, priced £12.99. Available now

TRIED & TESTED Rodial Crash Diet Body Detox, from £50 for 45 mins, at e House of Rush, Piccadilly, London (020 7042 3200/www.rush.co.uk). At-home Rodial Crash Diet Kit, £99 (www.rodial.co.uk). It's the worst possible scenario: a bloated Santa belly and a bikini to squeeze into in less than a month. Seeking a shortcut, I let the professionals do the hard work with Rodial's Crash Diet Body Detox. e treatment is designed to reduce that turkey feast-induced fluid retention in the legs, abdomen and arms and improve digestion to ease bloating. Amidst the fragrant candles and starry-lit black ceiling at e House of Rush, my treatment begins with some firm but relaxing dry body brushing to my legs, buttocks and arms to stimulate the lymphatic system. Not everyone likes their stomach being touched, but I opt for the light brushing in a clockwise motion to get my sluggish system moving. Next I'm lathered in the Rodial Crash Diet treatment gel (£75) and then covered in cling film, so I resemble the Christmas ham. Snug towels cocoon me as I'm treated to a relaxing head and shoulder massage while the gel gets to work on my cellulite and water retention. After a series of manoeuvres, the film is removed and my skin is softened with a fragrant slimming body oil via vigorous massage. Unlike other detox and wrap treatments where you're often rudely interrupted by a shower, there's no reason to leave the bed - making for a more relaxing treatment. As a finishing touch, I'm offered a Rodial Crash Diet Stick drink (£48 for pack) with diuretic properties to wave goodbye to water retention. I wouldn't say I left the spa feeling miraculously honed and toned but, with tightened, glowing skin, this definitely gave me the kick-start to continue a January regime and allay those bikini fears.

HISTORY CAN REPEAT ITSELF…

“My parents never had fillings, if anything was wrong with the tooth it came out and I suppose I followed their lead. So I found myself with caps and missing teeth. I decided now was the time to get all that fixed.” First stop was a session with Jessica the hygienist where Pat, like so many other patients, learn much more about looking after teeth and gums and the importance of healthy procedures like cleaning, flossing and mouthwash use.

PAT'S TEETH BEFORE TREATMENT

Pat, who lives in Chigwell, was worried about the cap on her top front tooth which had developed a gap and a dark ring at the top. Pat said “I had a cap on that tooth years ago but was less and less happy with the look. I had seen adverts for Smile Design by Ash in the LIFE magazine and also visited the premises so by the time the

I think it’s the whole package, the staff are lovely and friendly, Ash feels like a friend and really understands what you think about your teeth and your look.”

clients. “Ash quickly picked up on that and I think that’s the reason the treatment went so well. I went in worried and nervous and eventually, after it was all done, I left feeling I had been in the best hands. I regularly recommend Ash to my friends and family and think he should feel very proud about his personal commitment to his patients.” Ash says “Pat was very nervous initially but coped really well with all the treatment. After Pat’s treatment was completed some months ago, our Team decided to celebrate by taking her out for a meal. We had a delightful evening at a local Italian restaurant to thank Pat for being our first special patient at the practice.” Pat tells me she is now seriously thinking of ditching the lower denture in favour of implants so we shall watch this space. Meanwhile, make over photos done by Capture Photographic

PAT’S PASSION FOR PERFECT TEETH Words by Christine Baker practice was launched, I had decided to start treatment.” A free consultation together with Ash’s expert advice mapped out a treatment plan which would put an end to Pat’s concerns and worries about her teeth and her smile. A rather nervous patient, Pat didn’t like the sensation of lying down but the ‘state of the art’ equipment at the practice meant she could be treated almost sitting upright. Ash’s consultation also identified other dental treatment needed if Pat was to enjoy her fabulous new smile.

Grandmother of three, Pat is the first to say that she is perfectionist and that it runs through her life, referring to 18 years running a decorating and interior design business with her partner where everything had to be flawless for her

A ROOM FOR ALL SEASONS Y You want to move.! You need to move! You need more space for living, relaxing, entertaining. But moving is expensive and uncertain, and you have lavished a lot of time and money on your house and garden. Fortunately there are many ways to extend your property, from creating rooms in your loft, building a conservatory, to adding a garden room. All of these options create space and add value. Much has been written about loft conversions and conservatories, but garden rooms are still a largely undiscovered way of providing flexibility and fun. When most people think of outside structures in the garden they think of gazebos and summerhouses. But these days the range of options is staggering. Given our British climate, rooms open to the elements might seem a risk. 52

all, the garden room should be a sanctuary that reflects your house and enhances your garden. The lighting and heating are also important, especially if you want to entertain in the evening. We take care of all that too. We make sure that all parts of the structure work together in harmony, whether you are just relaxing or whether you are entertaining guests.” Of course, these days we also have to be especially careful about our green credentials. The beauty of a garden room created by a company such as Crown Pavilions, is that you can be sure that the timber is ethically sourced as well as deigned for easy maintenance with a quality and natural finish. The possibilities are endless. Whether your garden is large or small, or merely a paved courtyard you will find a garden room to suit your taste. Fuman comments “People want to enhance their homes and gardens and create spaces which are flexible for family life and entertaining friends. Garden rooms extend the scope of how you use your house and garden, create exciting and beautiful focal points, potentially increase the value of your property, and they are fun”.

N

ot for the first time we have a crazy situation wherein some types of antique silverware are worth more money for their scrap metal value than they are for their historic and functional qualities. Currently this applies to those large Victorian tea services, trays, memorial centre-pieces and presentation cups. ankfully most people today are resisting the temptation to scurry along to the nearest collection point and cash in, unlike the similar temptation of late 1970’s. is was when a demand for the scrap metal saw even fine Georgian coffee pots, candle sticks, teapots and tankards being melted down for cash. is is of course a tragedy because antique silver from the UK and C.I. is one of the few classes of antiques that by means of the finest guarantee system in the world, it is possible to tell from the hall marks stamped upon it when a piece was made, where it was made, where it was tested for quality, who tested it, what the quality is, when it was made, whether duty was paid, and most fascinating of all, the life story of the person who made it. It all began way back in the 12th century when King John 1167 – 1216 recognized that some semblance of order and uniformity needed to be introduced to the manufacture of coin of the realm and functional and commemorative silverware, correctly termed ‘wrought plate’. is is because pure silver is too soft to be durable and so is mixed or ‘alloyed’ with a hardening agent. At first copper alone was used but over the centuries many other ingredients have been introduced. e problem was that copper does not alter the colour of the silver and so it was not beyond the temptation of a silversmith to dilute the quality of the costly primary metal by adding any amount of

54

JANUARY2012

John Bly

copper before starting to make coin or object. At the time of King John the leading silversmiths in the Western world were Germans, and so a party of them were invited to come to England and advise on a ‘fineness’, that is a maximum percentage of silver to copper to make a metal pure enough to have maximum intrinsic value while being soft enough to ‘work’ or make with, yet be hard enough to withstand handling and use. e Germans settled on a ratio of 92.5% fine (pure) silver to 7.5% copper, which standard has remained the same (officially) from the 12th century to the present day with the exception of a short break between 1697 – 1720. Legend has it that the Germans were not overly welcome and were given the nickname ‘Easterlings’. e silver they produced was labeled the same and over the years the first two letters were dropped – we were as lazy with our language then as we are today – and the word ‘sterling’ became used to describe fine silverware and anything else of guaranteed quality. As coin and wrought plate were the same material it was

possible and much practiced to melt coin to make wrought plate when you got rich and melt wrought plate to make coin when things got tough. It was on such an occasion that any substandard silver was discovered but to date there was no true means of tracing the perpetrator. So in 1300 a statute of King Edward I provided that no ware of gold or silver should be sold until it had been taken to the headquarters of the guardians of the craft of silversmiths correctly referred to as goldsmiths- later to become known as an Assay Office. ere it was to be tested, the details of which we shall look at later, and if approved be stamped with a mark as a guarantee of quality. e mark, known at first as ‘the King’s mark, depicted the head of a lion, but as it was symbolic, and the then popular French language term for a lion in heraldry was ‘leopart’ it soon became known as the Leopard’s Head mark. At this time the headquarters of the Guild of Goldsmiths, already established earlier in the 13th century, was in London and it was not long before the Leopart’s Head mark in turn became known as the London town mark. Now this was all very well but there was still no definitive method of tracing an unethical goldsmith who had cheated in his material structure by putting too much copper into his mix. So to protect the honest smith and his clients as well as to trace the crooks a second mark was added in 1363 through a statute of King Edward III which provided that every goldsmith “should have a mark by himself ” to be struck next to the King’s (London town) mark. en, before any wrought plate was melted down a note was made of the maker’s name and if the silver was found to be substandard, he could be traced

and held responsible. Now this is taking longer to cover than I had imagined, and we haven’t even begun to talk about Channel Isles silver, so I’m going to make this the first of at least three episodes in the coming months, and I hope you will stick with it. Just briefly back to that crazy situation I mentioned at the beginning in the early 1970s. It was when the American oil billionaire Nelson Bunker Hunt and his brother William Herbert began accumulating large amounts of silver in an attempt to corner the market in this raw material. ey nearly succeeded for by 1997 they had acquired estimated silver holdings of 100 million Troy ozs. Between 1979 and 1980 the scrap price rose from around £6.50 an ounce in September 1979 to just over £30 an ounce in January 1980. Such a value was unsustainable and silver prices ultimately collapsed to below £6 an ounce two months later. It was estimated that the brothers benefitted by between $2billion and $4 billion before Nelson filed for bankruptcy in 1988. But such a phenomenal rise meant that old and new wrought plate was worth more for its material content than it was as an object, whatever it was. So antique silverware was worth more for melt than it was as a tangible piece of history, and I hope to show you in the ensuing chapters just how extraordinarily detailed that tangible history is. Incidentally apart from his failed attempt to control the world’s silver supply and his spectacular bankruptcy, N. Bunker Hunt is accredited as saying - words to the affect that - “A billion dollars isn't what it used to be” and “People who know how much they're worth aren't usually worth that much”. Read that with a rueful smile.

HOUSE GARDEN

A

s the ideal gardens ambassador for this year's Ideal Home Show, TV gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh needs to stay ahead of the times. Keeping a keen eye on gardening trends, landscaping designs and what the public will be growing in 2012 and beyond, he predicts that the 'grow your own' campaign will be as strong as ever this year. "Growing your own will still be popular," he says, "and veg can be fitted into pockets on the flower border as well as on a dedicated veg patch. "Climbers on house walls are set to make a resurgence - who needs to look at boring brickwork? Just make sure that adequate wire or trellis supports are provided. "And repeat-flowering roses should be in every garden - in and among border perennials and shrubs - dedicated rose beds are now out," he says. Despite heavy TV commitments, Titchmarsh will be out in his Hampshire garden this winter, preparing it for spring and beyond. "Getting my garden ready for spring is something that, like everybody else, I try to fit in around work. But it's vital and my garden is my safety valve as well as my canvas. "My garden has good lines. Perspective, proportion and form are every bit as important to me as colour. ere is lots of evergreen topiary clipped box and yew but within the borders there are billowing banks of perennials, shrubs and roses. "I also have a wild flower meadow and a wildlife pond, providing great entertainment and a really good way of doing my bit for conservation. My garden is my sanctuary." Winter offers time for planning new borders and allows gardeners time to do jobs little

by little, he says. "e great thing about winter is that things move slowly in the garden and we have a chance to catch up. It's not all about tidying, though there is some of that to do border perennials to cut back (I like to leave some old foliage on in winter to help insects and birds), the last of the leaves to clear up and compost. "I lightly fork over the earth between plants in early spring, working in a sprinkling of blood, fish and bone and then, among shrubs in particular, I mulch with chipped bark to seal in moisture and keep down weeds." Winter is a great time to take a long, hard look at the garden and work out where there are gaps in terms of interest, he reflects. Deciduous trees and shrubs are best planted now (provided the soil is not waterlogged or frozen) to give them a head start in spring, while perennials should be ordered now for planting in early spring so that the year can get off to a flying start. If the ground's too hard or wet to work on, curl up on a winter's evening with some seed catalogues and work out what you want to grow this year, making your order quickly for the best selection, he suggests. If you're creating a new veg plot, decide what you like eating and how much space such crops will take up. en work out sowing and harvesting times so that the best use is made of your veg patch. "Order your seeds early and store them in a shoe-box in order of sowing times," he advises. "Don't sow too much of quick-maturing crops such as lettuce and radish at the same time, but make smaller sowings every few weeks to ensure a succession of tender young crops." Indoors in January and February, you can sow geranium (pelargonium) seeds early - they take a long while to grow and will flower sooner if they are raised on a warm windowsill. Sprout seed potatoes so that they get off to a flying start when they are planted out later.

At the Ideal Home Show 2012, Titchmarsh will be judging the Ideal Young Gardeners of the Year competition in which six colleges go head to head to create sustainable show gardens. "We need to do much more to promote horticulture as a career and to pass on our gardening skills. It is the most rewarding of jobs, tough at times, yes, but one which allows us to do our bit for the future of the planet." e Ideal Home Show at London's Earls Court runs from March 16 to April 1. To book tickets, visit www.idealhomeshow.co.uk or call 0844 858 6763. Best of the bunch - Mahonia is winter shrub provides interest in both colour and form, with its deep green, glossy, holly-like leaves and clusters of fragrant yellow flowers, followed by purple or black berries. Mahonia will grow happily in shade, providing not only scent but good architectural value and some of the upright varieties, such as M. x media 'Charity', which bears vivid yellow flower spikes in winter, make good barriers against intruders. Others, such as M. japonica, which grows to 2m (6ft), make useful plants for a woodland edge or shrub border in shade. For a later-flowering variety, try M. aquifolium 'Apollo', which bears clusters of scented, acid-yellow flowers in spring. All of the popular varieties are easy to grow and are not fussy about soil type. Good enough to eat Horseradish If you've loved horseradish with your roast beef this winter, why not try growing your own for an eye-poppingly hot accompaniment? Be warned, though, it's an invasive perennial with deep roots that regrow when they're broken off and, once established, can be as difficult to get rid of as ground elder. Grow it in a bottomless

bucket sunk into the ground with its rim about an inch above the surface so that the roots don't spread up there and to keep clumps in check. Only the root of horseradish (Armoracia rusticana) is used. Buy plants from specialist herb nurseries, or some seed companies offer roots in their autumn catalogues for planting up in late winter or early spring. Make a hole in the soil with a dibber and push a single root into it, thickest end uppermost, leaving the tip at ground level. Plant three roots about 60cm apart for a good clump. Let the plants grow for two years before harvesting. Dig up one plant in September or October, using the biggest roots for the kitchen and cutting off one of the thinner roots to replant. What to do this week ● Continue to take root cuttings of acanthus, Oriental poppy, phlox and verbascums. ● Continue to keep bird feeders and troughs topped up with bird food and water. ● Keep the strong, whippy shoots of apple tree prunings to support bulbs later in the season. ● Bring container-grown shrubs such as viburnum, rose and deutzia into the greenhouse for forcing, maintaining a minimum temperature of 13C (55F). ● Sow sweet peas in deep pots under glass. ● Protect hairy-leaved alpines from winter wet with an open-ended cloche. ● Plant bare-rooted roses as soon as they are delivered. ● Firm down plants which have been lifted by frost. ● Bring pots of herbs indoors for use in the kitchen. ● Continue to harvest parsnips, kale and winter cabbages. ● Protect shrubs of borderline hardiness with layers of fleece or netting if frost threatens. ● Plant shallots and Jerusalem artichokes. ● Sow celery in a heated propagator.

pproached by Mr & Mrs Lamb, owners of a traditional ‘farmhouse’ styled building in rural Essex, Westbury Conservatories Ltd, specialists in providing bespoke timber garden rooms to the Home Counties, were initially requested to create a fully glazed “conservatory” on the rear of the property where a rarely used patio area sat. Architectural Designer, Ian Harrington of Westbury needed to understand the home-owners ideal use and function for the building in order to best design and specify the most functional and aesthetically pleasing design. In conversations with Mrs Lamb, she expressed a desire for a room that was multi-functional; a place for informal relaxation or formal entertaining, a room that can be used by their young children to play and enjoy television under her watchful eye. Mr Lamb wanted a design that was both in-keeping with the architecture of the building, but also made a considerable improvement to the properties look, function and add to the overall value of their property investment.

During the initial site visit Ian Harrington was able to quickly ascertain that an “Orangery” style of building could be integrated into the space using brick and timber construction, allowing connection of both the kitchen and living room areas. is would be a much more substantial extension to the home than a conservatory, as well as being far more functional due to a more steady temperature provided by a lesser glazed building. Ian’s recommendations would allow, what was the exterior wall to be knocked through to the kitchen, providing an open plan living area with a continual ceiling level, conducive to the modern style of living embraced by many families. is met the ideal scenario of Mrs Lamb, allowing her to watch over her children during meal preparation time. e living room was proposed to be connected with a partially walled expanse with bi-folding doors, allowing the home-owners either open access to, or privacy from the new room. Ian Harrington proceeded to design the building using his brief,

creating planning drawings and a watercolour illustration in order to gain Mr & Mrs Lamb’s approval. Approval granted, the project began and upon gaining planning permission; working drawings were created, scheduling planned and building commenced. e timber Orangery is sympathetically designed to nestle within the traditional exterior of the farmhouse style but with a contemporary twist. e roof lantern, a stunning architectural feature, provides masses of natural light, as well as ventilation via automated windows featuring rain and temperature sensors that open and closes according to conditions. e Orangery structure is made up of both brick and timber elements connecting to the building. e specialist timber joinery of tall double-glazed casement windows and large bi-folding double-glazed doors, open the room out into the garden. Both windows and doors feature a contemporary four pane glazing bar design. Tasteful lighting integrated into the ceiling and internal shelf of

the roof lantern brightens the room at night and creates an amazing illumination when viewed from the garden. e roof lantern design provides a beautiful view of a starry sky on clear nights, whilst sunlight brightens, without dazzling, in the day due to the tinted solar protective glazing requested as an option. An additional storage room was incorporated which has become the ideal “toy cupboard”. Finally, the Orangery is connected to the garden via three deep set brick and slab steps to the new stone slab patio. A large light and contemporary family room has been created by this extension, giving the owners and their young family a functional room that has become the hub of the home. e architectural design has improved and given more interest to the rear of the house. NEW YEAR NEW BORDER TIPS ON HOW TO BEAUTIFY YOUR FRONT GARDEN - PLUS SOME IDEAS ON BORDER DESIGN AND TIPS ON HOW TO MINIMISE MAINTENANCE By Hannah Stephenson

I

f your borders lack colour, texture and depth, then it's an ideal time to plan a new one to give you all-year-round colour, beautifully matched plants and a few surprises along the way. Don't be afraid to copy other's ideas. You may need to visit a National Trust garden or simply look for inspiration closer to home, seeking out ideas by peeking into neighbouring gardens or simply asking keen gardening friends how they achieved a particular effect which you want to replicate. Take a camera and notebook with you so that you can take pictures of particular scenes, so you don't just rely on your memory. Alternatively, cut out pictures from magazines and cover them with tracing paper, drawing on the key plant shapes you like. You may not be able to use exactly the same plants that you have admired in a magazine, but it will give you an idea of what works shape and height-wise. When planning, ensure that the border provides year-round interest, not just a mass of

62

JANUARY2012

blooms in summer which leaves the area looking dull and boring in winter. Brighten up spring with bulbs and make use of evergreens and shrubs with coloured bark or berries in autumn and winter to prolong interest and keep a shape to the border. While summer can be a riot of colour, trees and shrubs provide a framework to the border, some structure on which to build seasonal displays. ey can also be used individually to create a particular effect such as a focal point. Of course, the first consideration is your soil - is it acid or alkaline, is your aspect light or shady, is the ground dry or moist? Again, consider plants which have done well in your neighbours' gardens because they are also likely to do well in yours. If you want a tree or shrub to add height to a border, use a tripod of canes which can be moved around to give you an idea of where the new addition will fit in best and when choosing a tree, consider its rate of growth and ultimate size. You

HOUSE GARDEN

don't want it dominating the border and casting shade over some of your more colourful sun-lovers later in the season. Try to keep the planting design simple, choosing perhaps large interlocking drifts of plants rather than a mismatched smorgasbord of a lot of little plants which you've bought on a whim but which don't really complement each other. Consider a themed border for compatible plants, such as a Mediterranean border, or a border with one type of plant such as herbs, which can be intermingled successfully. ink about repetition in your border as using a particular plant repeatedly makes a particularly showy plant stand out and also helps merge a diverse display. Alliums, with their stunning lollipop-shaped clusters of flowers can provide a showy display repeated at points along a border, but any repetition will help give the border more visual uniformity. If you haven't particularly thought about colour, do so now, and use a colour wheel to judge which colours go best together. Do you want a sizzling clash for a dramatic, hot effect, or a softer palette of colours closer in shades such as pinks and mauves, which will merge together beautifully in the border? Use a few large, architectural plants such as phormiums or fatsias, to create a dramatic effect, rather than lots of fussy, small plants. Position plants, still in their pots, so you can stand back and view the effect from several angles and move them if you need to. BEST OF THE BUNCH POINSETTIA If your poinsettia has made it happily through Christmas, you may be able to make it bloom again for the next festive season. Keep it moist, but not sodden, and out of draughts for the time being. From April, gradually decrease watering, then when the leaves have fallen,

cut back the stem to leave 4in stumps. At this point, the pot can be placed in a mild, shady position and the compost should be kept almost dry. In early May, water and repot the plant, replacing some of the old compost, and place it on the brightest windowsill you have. By the end of the month you should see vigorous new growth. Feed regularly and remove some of the new growth to leave four or five strong new stems. In June, move the plant outside in its pot and place it in a semi-shaded spot and in July pinch out each stem by about an inch to keep the plant bushy. Bring the plant back indoors in August and continue the watering and feeding regime. By the end of September light control is essential, so you'll need to cover the plant with a black plastic bag in the evening and remove it the next morning so the plant is kept in total darkness for 14 hours. In November you can stop the darkness treatment and hopefully your poinsettia will again be in bloom at Christmas time. GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT TURNIPS No haggis feast would be the same without 'neeps and tatties', which may prompt you to try to grow some in the new year. Maincrop varieties are the easiest to grow and can be sown in July and August, for a first crop from October. Good varieties include 'Manchester Market', which is recommended for long storage, 'Golden Ball' and 'Champion Green-top Yellow'. Turnips do well in non-acid soil with reasonable drainage. Sow them thinly in a non-shady spot and thin them out as soon as the seeds are big enough to handle, until the plants are 25cm apart. Water them regularly to make sure you don't end up with small and woody roots and hoe regularly to keep weeds under control. Start lifting them as soon as they are large enough to use, as they deteriorate with age.

However, in most areas you can leave them in the ground and lift them when you want them. THREE WAYS TO... SECURE YOUR GARDEN 1. Replace external shed hinges (those with screws on the outside) with internal ones. 2. Use wall and ground anchors to secure heavy furniture left out over winter and bolt down valuable containers and statues. 3. Use prickly shrubs such as berberis to make hedges around your boundary which should help deter opportunist thieves. WHAT TO DO THIS WEEK ● Clean up your pots if you haven't already, brushing off dirt with a hard-bristled brush and discarding those which have broken, which can then be used as crocks. ● Sprinkle a thin layer of compost over the ground to enrich the soil and set off the flowers of early spring bulbs when they come through. ● Order seeds to be sown in January or February. ● Protect vulnerable plants from frost and wind damage. ● Check on bulbs being forced for indoor display every week so you don't miss flowering. ● If the soil is not waterlogged or frozen, continue winter digging. ● Clear borders of weeds and debris to keep them neat and prevent a build-up of garden pests and diseases. ● Order new summer-flowering bulbs in good time from a reputable supplier. ● Replace plant ties which have rotted before plants start growing actively. ● Examine stored dahlia tubers every few weeks and discard ones which are showing signs of rotting. ● In the greenhouse, if you want to force lilies to produce early flowers, pot them up now. ● Protect early-flowering winter bulbous irises by covering them with a cloche. ● Cut back suckers of rhododendrons at their point of origin.

2012 AUDI A4 OFFERS MORE THAN EVER BEFORE

T

he world’s most accomplished Compact Executive range of cars has just got significantly better with the arrival of the 2012 Audi A4 range. One glance is all it takes to recognize that Saloon, Avant and Allroad quattro models have sharpened up their looks with exterior and interior design revisions that brings the range bang up to date. But however good a car may look parked in the driveway, in these difficult times, the hard-pressed motorist demands efficiency savings as a first priority. So to prove beyond any doubt that the A4 enhancements are far more than skin deep, the talented Audi engine design team have managed to increase fuel efficiency by up to 21% and by over 11% across the entire A4 range. is of course means that there are benefits to be enjoyed in terms of road fund license and benefit in kind tax payments for company car drivers – which over an ownership period of a few years, can add up to a great deal of money. e class-leading 2.0TDIe

variant will now achieve a combined economy figure of 65.7 mpg making visits to the filling station more infrequent than ever. Even the petrol variants have astonishing statistics with the 1.8 litre TFSI delivering a sizeable 49.6 mpg and a mere 134g/km CO2! Four specification levels are available across the range, beginning with the comfort-oriented SE designation, now also available as a slightly more sophisticated SE Technik edition with added Milano leather upholstery plus a host of electronic upgrades. S line provides a more sporting oriented option featuring larger alloy wheels and lowered sports suspension and the new “Black Edition” takes the A4 to the very top of the options tree. An exciting new option available across the board is a high specification mobile phone interface offering online services, which not only brings search and navigation using Google Earth images, but also enables occupants to connect phones and computers to the internet wirelessly. But perhaps most impressive of all is the fact that the A4 range is still accessible for under £24,000, making it astonishing value for money compared to any other model in the sector.
