After frenzied interest in the £100,000 competition during October and November the judges whittled down thousands of successful entrants to a shortlist of 26 people. As we enter into 2013, we plan for a bigger and better year. Make resolutions, strategise how we can ensure successes however, living amongst us, are men and women who had ideas, aspirations for something really quite outstanding and then made their dreams come true.

We have a list which is just a small sample of local great achievers, who not only made it happen but are recognised both in the UK and internationally as leaders in their respective fields or professions. Although Essex has an incredible list of footballers of international repute, sadly, I’m not really a football fan so wouldn’t know who to choose and why. Sorry!

Once again, Happy New Year to you all and make sure 2013 is your year.

Wednesday 16 Jan 2013, Wed 13 Feb, Wed 13 Mar ONE TOUCH OF VENUS Modern art collector Whitelaw Savory unearths a long-lost statue of Venus of Anatolia and is thrilled to display her in his New York museum. But when a naïve
young barber named Rodney unwittingly brings the statue to life, Venus fixes her affections on him and pursues him all over New York. Rodney’s shrewish fiancée doesn’t like this one bit, and Savory will do anything including framing Rodney for murder to recover his beloved statue. Rodney keeps trying to set things right, and poor Venus can’t understand why he doesn’t respond to her seductions. After a series of comic setups and mix ups involving a couple of thugs, a nagging mother, a wisecracking secretary, some ancient Anatolians and a good dose of Olympian magic, earthly order is restored and new love found. NEW YEAR
New‘ Personal’ You… WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS
N
ew Year – New Year’s Resolutions – and this year is going to be e Year, when resolutions are kept, ambitions are achieved and rather like a beautiful butterfly emerging from a chrysalis, New Happy You sheds the burden of perhaps excess weight or any other kind of emotional baggage that inhibits and holds you back. Agreed? Healthy eating, joining the local gym, and quitting smoking… Am sure that every year, there are less people smoking. It truly is passé to be a smoker… For readers venturing into a new fitness regime, there is a fabulous, Virgin Active health club in Repton Park. David Lloyd in Chigwell has an excellent gym, swimming pool and tennis facilities. For those who prefer to dance and whilst simultaneously getting fit is the fantastic Zumba. It has (justifiably) become incredibly popular and I too, am a secret Zumba fan. Having purchased the DVDs, shakers and booklet from a certain TV shopping channel, dancing whilst taking off inches and improving your curves, can be a great fitness work-out which is also really, good fun. Fun on your own, within a class or with a group of friends - Zumba is more like a party than exercise. And as you continue to be inspired, a little potter down Loughton High Road and a meander around Holland and Barrett for some healthy nosh, rather than calorific loaded chocolate bars. Nuts are healthy but there are ‘a lot’ of calories per ounce for cashews so ration. Healthy food isn’t always slimming… Dried berries or seeds are also a healthy alternative to sweets. Perhaps a switch to herbal tea or fruit juice, instead of coffee to reduce your caffeine intake. Whilst walking down the high roads, coffee shops

are irresistible but there is always an alternative. You could also switch the sandwiches at lunch for a soup from Marks and Spencer (Loughton and South Woodford) which now comes in smaller packs. I recommend the Butternut Squash soup as it is absolutely delicious. Marks and Spencer, also offer a fabulous range of different salads, or if making at home, use herbs and spices to season and be sparing with the olive oil! We’re all busy, shuffling unrelenting timelines, responsibilities and duties. Especially as a wife and mother, we’re always at the bottom of an endless list that looks after everybody else first. However, rather like in-flight safety information (put your own oxygen mask on first before putting on anybody else’s) we can only really helps others, if, we’re in a good place. Which brings me to ‘ME’ time. It sounds selfish and others around you with their desperate endless needs may not always appreciate the importance of your own agenda, taking preference over your loved ones – however – ME time is crucial. With whatever it might be; a sauna, health and beauty treatments (try Harmony Health at Virgin in Chigwell), a slow comfortable walk down one of our beautiful high roads, or a just enjoying the fresh air in Epping Forest, we all need to recharge. ink of your phone – unless recharged – goes flat! RICH AND FAMOUS MEN LINKED WITH ESSEX
A Personal Perspective… WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS
A
s we enter into 2013, we plan for a bigger and better year. Make resolutions, strategise how we can ensure successes however, living amongst us, are men who had ideas, aspirations for something really quite outstanding and then made their dreams come true. e following list is just a small sample of local great achievers, who not only made it happen but are recognised both in the UK and internationally as leaders in their respective fields or professions. Although Essex has an incredible list of footballers of international repute, sadly, I’m not really a football fan so wouldn’t know who to choose and why. Sorry! LORD SUGAR Probably one of Chigwell’s most famous residents. Elaboration of his international success, fame and fortune, are too well known for me to list. Why Lord Sugar? Because of my personal admiration for the fortune he gives to charities and good causes in local areas. CLINTON CARDS AND EPPING… Don Lewin OBE is chairman and founder of the famous Clinton Cards chain. In 2008, he and his family had an estimated worth of nearly £140 million. Why the connection with Epping? In 1968, he borrowed £500 to open a greeting card shop in Epping. By 1988 he 18

a handwritten card or note is always more personal and memorable. ALEX JENNINGS A talented actor born in Hornchurch near Brentwood. Why Alex Jennings? Personal reasons…I saw him at the National eatre (2007) where he played Gary Essendine in Present Laughter. His performance was outstanding and to this day, I have still kept the programme. e title of this Noel Coward play is taken from a song in Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night which recommends ‘carpe diem’ (“present mirth hath present laughter”) – or more commonly translated as meaning ‘seize the moment’. Carrpe diem is one of my favourite sayings and will be my inspiration for 2013…. What’s yours? If you have a special reason for choosing a particular rich and famous man from Essex (other than being married to one), please write in and let me know. If I receive enough replies, I will collate and publish a readers’ list. PROBABLY ONE OF CHIGWELL’S MOST FAMOUS RESIDENTS
had a chain of 87 shops and in 1989, he floated the company for £20 million. By 2004 the company was valued at £140 million. Why Clinton Cards? His son’s name was Clinton. As a writer and whenever pottering down one of our local high roads, I always pop into a Clintons Cards shop and read the cards. Sometimes the cards
are inspirational, at other times perhaps a tad twee. Either way, whenever I want something special and generally do prefer the Art Deco cards, there’s something rather charmingly old-fashioned about a card whether for a birthday or to thank somebody; it is more meaningful than an email. Perhaps not as environmentally friendly as a paperless note, but

FAMOUS WOMEN
Born in Essex WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

s we enter into 2013, we plan and hopefully anticipate, a better year. But who are the women born within our areas that truly made it? Not just in the UK but who are recognised internationally as great women. e following are just a few who have each received an OBE, CBE or DBE: RUTH RENDELL CBE Born in South Woodford on 17th February 1930. Internationally famous English crime writer. Rendell has received many awards for her writing: Crime Writers’ Association – Silver, Gold and Cartier Diamond Daggers

Mystery Writers of America – ree Edgars (the highest accolade) e Arts Council National Book Awards e Sunday Times Literary Award. Plus all of us have either read a book or seen one of the film adaptations. DAME MARGARET ‘MAGGIE’ SMITH DBE Actress - Born in Ilford, Essex on 28 December 1934. Probably her birthday (or near about) as you read this feature! Nominated for six Oscars but won two - e Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and California Suite (1978). Ranked no. 10 in the 2001 Orange Film Survey of the greatest British film actresses. Appointed a CBE in 1970 and a DBE (Dame Commander of the Most
Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 1990. She has also bravely survived breast cancer. Maggie Smith’s presence in a film, guarantees an outstanding cinematic experience. Maggie really is a home-grown star. JILLY COOPER OBE Born in Hornchurch (near Brentwood) – now an internationally famous and celebrated author. I think most women have read a Jilly Cooper novel; especially those of us, of a ‘certain’ age! She was awarded the OBE for services to literature in e Queen's Birthday Honours list in 2004 However from a world of horse-riding and jolly hockey sticks – a real sportswoman and Olympian…
SALLY GUNNELL OBE Born in Chigwell on 29th July 1966. Gold Medal Olympian. A true ‘golden’ star of Chigwell. Sally’s skills were supposedly nurtured by making hurdles out of piles of hay. Albeit I’m sure there was phenomenal talent in her genes. Internationally respected for her contribution to sport, she was awarded the OBE in 1998. If you have a special reason for choosing a famous woman from Essex, please write in and let me know. If I receive enough replies, I will collate and publish a readers’ list. Tease or Treason? WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS
P
robably the most talked about prank of the year, involved two Australian DJs (Mel Greig and Michael Christian) calling the King Edward VII Hospital, impersonating e Queen and Prince Charles, for a medical update on the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton’s morning sickness. is prank resulted in a nurse allegedly, committing suicide. Was it funny? In hindsight, not really…
e debate continues as to whether two rather silly pranksters could have foreseen the sad outcome of their actions. e radio station (2Day FM) gave the green light the DJ’s actions were not illegal and the call was broadcast around the planet; the station’s executives, rubbed their greedy hands in glee as their front line puppets danced about in self-satisfied, juvenile euphoria. So despite personal opinion, outcome or should they or shouldn’t they – should this telephone call have been publicised? e Australian press are now accusing the UK of blame game tactics but who should take responsibility? My own opinion – ridiculing e Queen and Prince Charles is offensive. (We’ll exclude the corgis!) In history, you would have been hung, drawn and quartered for less! I therefore sought some local, legal advice from Sukhjit Ahluwalia 22
JANUARY2013
of Avery Emerson Solicitors. “e media are entrusted to abide by a clearly defined code of ethics which have been breached. Impersonating e Queen and the heir apparent in order to obtain confidential information is unethical and illegal; it breaches Section 55 of the Data Protection Act with respect to the Michelle Harris unlawful obtaining and disclosing of personal information.” e radio station stated they tried to obtain permission from the data controller (King Edward VII Hospital) for permission to broadcast. Perhaps they should have tried harder before broadcasting. Elaborating on this Act, there is a semblance of an argument, only if, it is in the public interest! Always fascinated with history, my own thoughts were of possible treason. However only the Attorney General has jurisdiction to consider possible prosecution, which realistically, is unlikely to be pursued. is crime (since the reign of Henry IV) extends to citizens of Commonwealth countries which includes Australia. To impersonate the monarch is to suggest that you are the monarch and the true monarch doesn’t exist. So the two DJs are in hiding but have expressed their sorrow… “…. Innocent on our behalf…… funny and light-hearted…” If they were prosecuted in the UK, they could be fined £5,000 each, under section 60 of the Data Protection Act. What happens now? Hopefully the Duchess of Cambridge will see her pregnancy through to fruition without further media upset. For Prince William, this is probably just too personal and painful; first the media circus around his mother, now focused around his wife and unborn child. For 2Day FM – personally, I hope they lose their media licence and thereby stop a potential floodgate of pranksters looking for their five minutes of feeble fame. THE PROSPECTS FOR FUTURE INVESTMENT 9.0%. at is the return achieved by the FTSE 100 Index during 2010. e index started the year at 5,413 and closed at 5,900 but if you’d asked a hundred different people for their predictions on where the index would finish at the end of the year, the chances are you would’ve had a hundred different answers. e media regularly seek the views and opinions of leading economists, analysts and market commentators on where equity markets are heading next. Unsurprisingly, the only consistency in their response is the lack of consistency. So what are the real prospects for equity markets for the next three months, twelve months or three years? e short answer is that we don’t really know – and in reality, nor does anyone else. What we do know is that, historically, taking a medium to long term view of investment is a proven route to success for the future. e philosophy of ‘buy and hold’ has held good over many years and remains a sensible strategy for investors to adopt. e longer people stay invested, the better the chance that they will make money. Sir Mark Weinberg, the President and founder of St. James’s Place, says history and experience have taught him that forecasting is ‘futile’. “However uncomfortable it may feel from time to time, we continue to advise our clients to adopt the buy and hold approach over the longer term,” he said. Investors should always try to avoid concerns over short term market fluctuations – no matter how volatile the past few years have been – and stay focussed on long term goals, allowing investments sufficient time to realise their potential. When it comes to both capital growth and income, equities have historically outperformed all other asset classes over the
longer term. And while this cannot be guaranteed to happen again in the future, the prevailing investment climate provides opportunities for those willing to take a long term view. Clearly, the performance of investments can make a critical difference to your future financial well-being, so reliable financial advice, investment products and fund managers you can trust are important. SUCCESSFUL INVESTMENT CAN BE ACHIEVED BY ADHERING TO FIVE GUIDING PRINCIPLES: 1. Invest for the longer term, because the shorter term is so unpredictable. 2. Keep enough money aside in liquid assets to meet shorter term needs and any emergencies. 3. Never ignore the risk of having to face a period of significant inflation and place longer term investments into real assets that stand the best chance of outpacing it. 4. Diversify investments as widely as possible by spreading money between a number of investment managers with different styles of investing. 5.Find the very best managers you can. e most important consideration for the long term investor is a clear understanding of their financial objectives and a clear plan to achieve those goals within an acceptable level of risk. Attitude to risk is a key factor in successful investment and a skilled adviser will be able to determine how cautious or adventurous an investor is likely to be in their approach. A balanced portfolio of investments across a range of companies and sectors, further diversified through exposure to non-correlated asset classes, can help to reduce risk. e turbulence of stock markets since the near collapse of the global banking system in 2008 and, more recently, the European sovereign debt crisis have tested the resolve of the most experienced investors. However, the only market prices that ever matter are those an investor buys at and sells for – not what happens in between. e key to successful investing is to invest with proven investment managers who have the skills, knowledge and ability to deliver strong performance. Investing can be a rewarding experience if it is done properly, wisely and consistently. By following these simple rules - and seeking specialist advice from an experienced and trusted adviser - a substantial portfolio of investments can be built up that can provide real rewards over the long term. ST JAMES__ 24/08/2012 12:45 Page 1
GENDER PRICING ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE, WAR AND INSURANCE PREMIUMS Have you ever wondered why women tend to pay less for car insurance than men, or why men get more bang for their buck when they convert their pension into an annuity? It is all to do with the practice of gender-based pricing used by insurers to calculate the premiums we pay. But it is a practice that is about to be outlawed thanks to a landmark ruling – a ruling that will soon affect how much you pay for insurance or get from your pension fund. e European Court of Justice in Luxembourg has ruled that using differences between men and women as a risk factor in setting premiums for car and medical insurance and pension schemes breaches EU rules on equality. "Taking the gender of the insured individual into account as a risk factor in insurance contracts constitutes discrimination," the court said in a statement. How it will affect you will depend on your age, medical condition and gender, although it is anticipated that more men than women will be better off as a result. If you have a teenage son you will be all too aware of the sky-high cost of insurance. If you have a daughter of a similar age, you’ll be relieved to learn that although it is still expensive, premiums are lower for young female drivers. Younger female drivers pay significantly less than their male counterparts because they are less likely to be involved in accidents and therefore, less likely to make a claim. But while the equalisation of motor premiums will make all the headlines because of its mass-market need, all insurance policies from life cover to private medical insurance will be impacted. With private medical insurance (PMI), for example, gender differences in medical conditions can explain why premiums tend to be higher for females aged 35 to 55, but they are lower for females than for males from the age of 60 onwards (ABI Research Paper 24 – e Use of Gender in Insurance Pricing). . With life insurance and pension annuities, the difference in premiums or benefits can be explained by differences in the life expectancy of men and women. Owing to their lower mortality risk, women benefit from lower premiums on life insurance, but because they will live longer they will get a lower annuity income from their pension.
e deadline may be around six months away, but people need to reassess their situation as soon as possible. Policies that are up and running before December 21 will not be affected by the ruling and so it may pay to review your situation now. e savings could be considerable, particularly once you factor in the length of the policy. Experts suggest that the cost of life cover and critical illness rates for both men and women could rise by around 25 per cent (ABI News Release, 1 March 2011). If this is the case, you could save yourself £6,000 by paying £200 a month on a 10-year policy rather than paying £250 a month. And while the beginning of Christmas week might seem a long way off people who want to revisit their critical illness, PMI or life insurance policies ought to get a move on because it is not just a case of signing on the dotted line. Medicals will have to be arranged and processed before an application is approved – and this could take up to three months. In short, an application submitted in September could struggle to beat the deadline. THERE IS ANOTHER REASON FOR NOT RESTING ON YOUR LAURELS. Insurers may start to change their pricing ahead of the deadline. Indeed, it would appear that motor insurers are doing just that. According to the latest AA Index, motor premiums for young male drivers fell by almost 1 per cent over the first three months of this year, while the cost of cover for young women increased by 4.8 per cent. e inability for insurers to use gender will not necessarily make pricing fairer, but it will make insurance more expensive for many and reduce pension income for many too. It’s why you should act sooner rather than later. NEW YEAR
New‘ Business’ You… WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS
L
ooking to develop and grow your business? Is 2013 going to be the great year that sees your business reach new heights with increased customers/clients, sales and profit margins?
Whether a new business or SME - where do you begin to review or improve your business? ● Are there opportunities in other market areas or target segments? ● What is your overall market positioning and how do you compare to your competition? ● Are you (and your team) promoting your USP (Unique Selling Point)? ● Is your message out there? ● How effective is your corporate branding? Companies happy to plod along would have addressed at least, some of these points. Very successful companies would have addressed them ALL. Being brutal with honest answers is not always pleasant, however knowing where and when you’re going off-track or missing potential business is a positive way forward. So what are the key areas to focus on with respect to marketing? Website. Great – most of us have one. But as your 24/7 shop window to the world … are you generating enough traffic to the website? Is it easy to navigate and ‘sticky’? e average web user has an attention span of just three seconds. Does your web copy have an arresting opening to attract attention, enough information (and not too much) to maintain interest and to drive that all important, strategic call to action? Media/PR. Is your potential, target audience, reading about you? How strategic is your corporate visibility campaign? More importantly, if a potential client were to ask ‘What’s in it for me?’ would there be enough answers in your advertising campaign for them to feel they wanted, or more importantly - needed to call you for more information? Advertisements. More people will read every word of an advertisement rather than your website, an editorial or advertorial. Why? Because there are fewer words: it’s quicker and easier. Your advertisement needs a great heading, emotive language to engage your target audience and a brilliant memory hook. Next time you watch a 30-second advertisement on television – are you being sold by the product? Or how your lifestyle/family/business/home would benefit or at least be enhanced by buying/using the advertised product or service? It’s all about solutions and customer benefits. People are interested in themselves. Also are you advertising in the right journal/newspaper/magazine? If you are looking for a particular type of client, have presence in the newspapers/magazines that they would read. Social Media. (Twitter/LinkedIn/Facebook) One of the biggest advantages of social media is that aside the expense of time,
26
JANUARY2013
financially, it’s the most economically viable. How much time you invest in all these opportunities is of personal choice. But if looking to professionally ‘tweet’ - it takes quite a lot of experience and technique to deliver an interesting message in 140 characters. Worth practising and developing a style that will bring your followers back to check you out on a regular basis. Networking, Referrals and Building Relationships. So far all the marketing areas described are from a distance. Actually meeting people on a regular basis, getting to know them and vice-versa, making initial physical contact with a handshake and exchange of business cards (and never underestimate the importance of an eye-catching and informative card – and please - use both sides) may appear old-fashioned. But despite internet and cyber-everything – most of us still like to meet the people with whom we might develop, potential business opportunities. It takes time so it is important to be patient. Before business is discussed, there is the necessary time to develop the important relationships. Plus of course, existing happy customers will be talking about you which will lead to referrals. After ascertaining your appropriate strategy, it is absolutely crucial that your message has the right calibre of language for its medium and is in keeping with the necessary strategies regarding content, visuals and overall aesthetics I hope these few ideas and suggestions will help your campaigns, sales and profits. 2013 is probably going to be another tough year as the media warns of ‘triple dip recession’. It is important to remind everybody you’re still around and ready to take on more business… If you have any comments about this feature or would like more information - please contact me: Michelle@starcopywriting.com / Mobile: 07949 556 294 www.starcopywriting.com ■

Q: HAVE YOU SEEN ANY EFFECTS OF THE CURRENT ECONOMIC CLIMATE? Our recent Open Days were very busy with many new families attending. We haven’t really seen a downturn in demand – more that parents have been looking for other ways to manage the financial commitment of fees, such as spreading payments or looking to grandparents for support. Prospective parents are generally well-informed about private schooling and the many opportunities that we offer. Q: WHERE ARE YOUR NEW PUPILS TRAVELLING FROM? We’ve seen many new families move into Epping recently who have been looking for excellent local independent schools such as Coopersale Hall. We’re only 15 minutes from Chigwell via Abridge and eydon Bois, and the same distance from Woodford, Loughton and North Chingford. ere’s been a marked rise in interest from families coming from areas such as Stapleford Abbots, North Weald, Roydon and Ongar. Q: HOW SUCCESSFUL ARE COOPERSALE HALL CHILDREN AT 11+? Our pupils are extremely well-prepared for a wide choice of senior schools at age 11 and we work with families to guide them towards the schools that best suit their children. We have an outstanding track record of helping children into their first choice senior schools and preparing them for life beyond Coopersale Hall. Our older children have lots of opportunities to try new things via our extensive range of extra-curricular activities – over 40 clubs and societies to choose from. Q: HOW DOES BEING PART OF THE OAK-TREE GROUP HELP? Being part of a family-owned and managed group gives us the

strength and expertise to develop whilst maintaining the high level of attention we give to our pupils’ individual progression. We participate in group activities, such as academic or sporting fixtures and the bi-annual Music and Dance Festival that showcases the wide range of talents from pupils at all three schools. e staff have joint training sessions and meet at regular intervals to share ideas and discuss the latest educational trends. Q: HOW DO YOU SEE THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SCHOOL AND PARENTS? One of the strengths of Coopersale Hall School is that we know our pupils and their families very well. Our smaller class sizes help our many specialist teachers to support and extend whenever possible. Our recent series of parent coffee mornings with Matthew Hagger, Group Principal, and myself, have been useful to discuss all aspects of the education we provide. Parent Workshops on Maths skills, French, Science and Early Years reading have enabled parents to help their children more at home. Q: YOUR PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION SEEMS TO BE VERY PROACTIVE – HOW INVOLVED DOES IT GET IN SCHOOL LIFE? We are very fortunate to have a team of very active parents who work hard together to raise funds to provide extra resources for the children such as playground equipment, classroom luxuries and even a minibus! ey also fund trips to places like the Tower of London and have a direct line to Santa and the Easter Bunny! Q:WHAT DOES SPRING TERM BRING? We have our next Open Morning on Friday 15 March, where we open our doors on a regular school day so that new parents can see Coopersale Hall School in action. www.oaktreeschools.co.uk ■

Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET THE SMART LANDLORD - or are they just penny wise and pound foolish.
We really did not need the census to confirm the news that residential properties are now well below the numbers of those owned twelve years ago down to 64%, and that those in rented accommodation are at a post war high up from 6% to 15%. All agents active in sales and lettings could have confirmed this fact years ago. In Central London however, the percentage now renting exceeds the number who have mortgages 29.2%. I have written previously regarding the ‘Accidental Landlord’ and how by letting their family home that they originally wanted to sell, have now resorted to renting it, because after trying everything except the unmentionable (giving the agent the correct incentive by way of remuneration, or heaven forbid reducing the price, but preferably both) have failed to find a buyer. is accidental landlord being inexperienced, regrettably does not always act correctly, and tries to make both ends meet the middle by economising on expenditure as much as they can. ey will begin by instructing the agent that quotes the cheapest fee to find a tenant. In order to save a few more pennies, they insist on handling the management and rent collection themselves. When, at the end of their rope through aggravation, or totally fed up being at the tenants beck and call, they will then, albeit reluctantly,
WOODFORD. LET AGREED.
seek out the cheapest agent to take on the management, without questioning how they can possibly do a proper job by charging as little as 4% of the rental or as in some cases as little as 1 or 2 weeks rent as a fee. Never concerned regarding the ‘unknown’ qualifications: experience, expertise or even bothering to enquire if they have a Professional Indemnity Policy or an audited and secure Clients Account. Believe it or not it would seem from the census that this particular type of landlord accounts for almost 50% of the private sector rented accommodation in the market. Little wonder that tenants are demanding that the property they rent are professionally managed and are avoiding the cheapo bucket shop agents and penny pinching self management like the plague. Good for them, I say. Regrettably, the selection of property for sale and rent is getting smaller and smaller by the day. Most agents will be blaming the time of year and the weather as the culprit. My own view is that
CHIGWELL £1,500,000

there are far deeper reasons for the dearth of property in either market, and it will get a lot worse before the current situation begins to improve. From our company’s view our major successes have been between £400,000 and approaching £1 Million, as this is where the major demand to purchase is, and between £800 PCM and £2000 PCM for rentals. Despite this, being the eternal optimist, we are at present preparing a portfolio of property to Rent and For Sale to be launched in the New Year. Should you be interested in us including

Please remember the next window of opportunity to let or to sell is now, should you wish to take advantage of the Football transfer window which closes at the end of this month. Bored of traditional smoky eyes or classic red talons? Try this season's purple beauty obsession for an instant colour update. It's regal, opulent and oh-so on-trend right now, whether you want a plush deep purple or eye-popping bright indigo. THOU SHALT NOT... OVERSPEND ON SEASONAL TRENDS Catwalk fads come and go but staples just keep delivering, no matter what the season. Seek out timeless classics that will enhance your wardrobe for years to come. "e high street will be stocking vertical striped blazers, which are flattering and just scream spring/summer 2013, however, it's a classic that will see you through," suggests Mark Heyes, stylist on ITV's Lorraine. "You can be wearing an old T-shirt and weekend jeans and instantly look smart with one of these. If you're a cardigan wearer, replace it with a striped blazer and it can take 10 years off."

efore you go making those life-changing resolutions, slow down - and think 'mini makeover' instead. More than three-quarters (78%) of people who give up on their resolutions are doomed to fail because they try to make over-ambitious changes, according to research by the University of Hertfordshire. But if you plan smaller, specific changes - to say, your closet or bathroom cabinet you're likely to achieve a much higher success rate. Undo the damage of a festive fashion and beauty hangover. Whether it's one, two or all 13, tick off these commandments for a stylish 2013. THOU SHALT NOT... COVET TOO MANY CLOTHES Give the January sales a wide berth if you have a penchant for false economy wardrobe 'bargains'. Calculate potential cost-per-wear when you're about to splurge on yet another fashion fad with a limited shelf life. Dressipi stylist Natalie eo says: "It's all about versatility and making that hard-earned cash go further at this time of the year. "A little black dress, particularly a shift, is both a wardrobe investment piece and a great fashion blank canvas. It can easily be re-styled to create completely different looks." 36
JANUARY2013
THOU SHALT NOT... IGNORE YOUR BODY SHAPE Love handles, muffin tops and bingo wings... all wobbly bits that can be minimised with clever styling. Do away with unflattering fashions for 2013 by paying special attention to your reflection. "We all come in different shapes and sizes so it's about finding clothes to flatter your physique and accentuate your assets," says Julie Donnelly, head of womenswear buying for Isme.com. "Something as simple as the right cut and fit can give women that ultimate body confidence to dress how they really want in the New Year." THOU SHALT NOT... BE A WALLFLOWER Special occasions sometimes call for a statement dress that you can just throw on and go. Seek out a one-piece wonder for 2013; something that doesn't require lashings of accessories or fuss so you can be ready in record time. Bobbie Malpass, editor of MyCelebrityFashion.co.uk, says: "Our fashion advice is don't start the New Year without a LRD - that's Little Red Dress. "It's a stand-out colour and one that will get you noticed with minimum effort."

THOU SHALT NOT... OVERPACK When it comes to holiday packing, two thirds (67%) of UK women not only fill up their own suitcases but hog a third of their partner's too, according to research by Sunshine.co.uk. Don't succumb to another year of panic at the excess baggage counter. "Check the weather forecast before you go to minimise all those 'just in case' items," advises Emily O'Brien, editor of Styloko.com. "Wear your bulkiest BOOTS
items to the airport - if you're taking a jumper and jacket, this is the time to

that will work for you now. ink about the image you want to portray and whether your style matches that - or ask someone else if you want an honest opinion."
wear them. To avoid carrying excess clothes that don't go with anything, try and pack outfits rather than throwing in random items." THOU SHALT NOT... HOARD A REDUNDANT WARDROBE No excuses for keeping clothes that are collecting mothballs in the back of your wardrobe. A clearout could even boost your bank balance for a new purchase. Mark Pearson, chairman of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, says: "Selling items online can be a great way of getting rid of unsuitable clothes, particularly if you've nabbed yourself an item that's in high demand - often a bidding war will mean you get a higher return than you paid in the first place. "Be aware that selling online often incurs additional selling fees, particularly with eBay, so you need to be careful it's not costing you more than you realise." THOU SHALT NOT... BE STUCK IN A STYLE RUT Almost half of women (46%) admit they've never tried changing their appearance, according to Groupon research. It's WWW.CLOTHINGATTESCO.COM easy to go on autopilot and throw on the same clothes and make-up, so ensure you bring your 2013 look up to date. "New Year is a great opportunity to think about what's in our wardrobe and make-up bag," says Seven Suphi, life coach and behavioural change specialist. "You need to wear clothes and make-up
THOU SHALT NOT... YO-YO DIET Maintaining a healthy weight isn't just essential for squeezing into your favourite dress but for your face too. Avoid a rollercoaster ride on the weighing scales. "Repeatedly gaining and losing weight can take its toll on the skin's elasticity, leaving behind stretch marks and jowls," warns dermatologist Dr Tess Mauricio. "Yo-yo dieting also causes premature ageing - the repeated weight gain and loss stretches your skin and makes it loose and saggy. A loss of facial fat causes sagging and a gaunt, aged appearance so aim to keep your weight in the normal BMI range." If you do need to slim down, aim to lose weight sensibly and slowly, rather than crash dieting, as this is more likely to be sustainable. THOU SHALT NOT... MAKE UNREALISTIC DETOX RESOLUTIONS Extreme January 1 plans for wheatgrass shots combined with twice-daily gym visits means that you're likely to fall off the detox wagon in no time. Aim for a skin-transforming resolution that doesn't inflict any suffering. "ree minutes a day body-brushing will change your skin," says Newby Hands, FeelUnique.com's editorial director. "Work from the feet upwards, always brushing towards the heart, and work gently to target the lymphatic system for smoother limbs and softer skin. Do this daily and you'll see the difference in just two weeks." THOU SHALT NOT... COLLECT POINTLESS POTIONS If 2012 was the year of the BB (beauty balm) cream, get set for CC (colour corrector) creams in 2013. Downsize your product haul with multi-tasking products for a simpler skincare routine. "Nowadays, with all the hybrid make-up that combines skincare and colour, you don't have to layer your skin with numerous products," says Jemma Kidd, make-up artist. "If you make addressing redness and uneven skin tone your
main aim, you can't go far wrong." THOU SHALT NOT... BE UNKIND TO YOUR SKIN Give your skin back its sparkle for the New Year. Make a clean start by always ensuring that your head hits the pillow with a freshly-scrubbed face. Celebrity facialist Nichola Joss says: "Cleansing the skin is super-important to clear away impurities such as dead skin cells and dirt from the day, which can dull the complexion - imagine the dull surface of a mirror and then the sparkle of one that's been polished. "Use a deep cleansing product to remove debris from the skin, and massage in using fingertips in a circular motion. Spritz with a facial mist to re-balance your skin." THOU SHALT NOT... DISMISS 'ME' TIME Never underestimate the power of re-charging your batteries. Aim to set aside one evening per week when you lock the bathroom door for a well-deserved pamper. "Sunday nights can work well and it's a great time to prepare yourself for the week ahead," recommends Geraldine Howard, co-founder of Aromatherapy Associates. "A bath with essential oils can be wonderfully relaxing to the body and restorative to the mind. Use this time to take some deep breaths and just focus on yourself with no distractions." THOU SHALT NOT... NEGLECT YOUR EYES e skin surrounding your eyes is the thinnest and most delicate on your face, meaning wrinkles appear faster than anywhere else. Eliminate tell-tale signs by vowing to use an anti-ageing eye cream daily. "Use your ring finger for applying eye creams, as this has the lightest touch and is least likely to pull the skin," advises Josephine Fairley, co-author of the Anti-Ageing Beauty Bible. "Starting at the inner corner, dot the cream from just below your lashes to the outer corner of your orbital bone, patting it onto the skin. Do the same above the eye."

Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR it whitens the coloured substances within the teeth (and not just superficially). Only the teeth colour is made lighter, while the structure of the teeth remains unchanged.
IMPROVE YOUR CONFIDENCE WITH A WHITER SMILE: FOCUS ON TEETH WHITENING ere are a lot of “grey” areas when it comes to teeth whitening. Many people are worried about whitening their teeth. In this edition, I would like to make it very clear why professional teeth whitening supervised by a dentist is safe, effective and does not damage teeth in any way. Q: What is teeth whitening? A whitening process that lightens discoloration of the enamel and dentine; it is also the most popular dental cosmetic treatment. Q: What causes teeth discoloration? ere are many causes. e most common include ageing, consumption of staining substances (coffee, tea, tobacco), trauma to a tooth or discoloured, old restorations. Q: Who may benefit from teeth whitening? Almost anyone. Having a whiter, brighter, younger-looking smile can boost your self-confidence. Existing porcelain crowns, veneers and fillings are not responsive to the whitening process i.e. will not change colour. At our Practice, the dentist carries out a preliminary oral examination of your teeth to determine suitability and show you what results you can expect to achieve from teeth whitening. Because we use the best predictable whitening

Q: Is teeth whitening safe? Yes. Extensive research and clinical studies indicate that whitening teeth with oxygen releasing gel under supervision is safe for teeth and gums. It will not affect teeth structure, enamel, fillings or restorations.
techniques, satisfaction is almost always guaranteed. Q: What is better – home whitening or that offered by the dentist (in the dental chair)? In my professional opinion, the easiest, safest and most cost effective way is definitely home whitening. Impressions are taken to make accurately fitting whitening trays. Very tiny amount of the whitening gel is applied to the teeth via the trays for 1-2 hours per day. e teeth gradually whiten over 2-3 weeks in most cases. We would have recorded the colour of your teeth before you start, and also at the end of the whitening process to see if you had reached the desired goal. Q: How does whitening of teeth work? A: We believe that oxygen is released from the whitening gel placed against the surfaces of your teeth. As oxygen enters the enamel and dentine,
Q: Are there any side effects? Some people may experience temporary sensitivity of the teeth during the treatment. ese symptoms always disappear within 1-2 days of interruption or completion of the treatment. at is why we recommend use of a sensitive toothpaste (e.g. Sensodyne) during the teeth whitening. Q: How long do the results last? Your teeth will be noticeably whiter than they were, and the effect can last up to 2 years. However, exposure to tobacco,
certain foods and drinks such as red wine, tea and coffee will gradually stain teeth again over time. We recommend “top up whitening” for 1-2 hours every 4-6 months to maintain the whiter colour. is is the other advantage of home whitening as you can keep your trays and use these with the gels for future top up whitening. SPECIAL OFFER FOR LIFE MAGAZINE READERS Valentines Day is coming up soon! I would like to offer Life magazine readers £95 off Home Teeth whitening with ZOOM (our normal price is £295). THE GOOD LIFE
SMALL THINGS CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE WHEN IT COMES TO KEEPING CALM, SOOTHING STRESS, OR RE-ENERGISING. BY GABRIELLE FAGAN THE 10-STEP GUIDE TO HEALTH AND WELLBEING. MINDFUL BREATHING is is one of the most successful tools for switching off tension as it naturally calms our body. Find somewhere quiet to sit for a few minutes. Get comfortable, shut your eyes and focus on your breathing, which should be slow and regular. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth, focussing on the sensation as the air enters and leaves the nostrils. As distractions occur, refocus on your breathing. Stay like this for up to 10 minutes. TIGHT NECK MUSCLES Tensing our shoulder and neck muscles as we work on a keyboard, drive or rush around in the cold weather is common but can make us tired and inhibit circulation, says Nikki Page, author of e Little Book Of Wellbeing (Cico Books, £8.99). Carry out your own therapy, she suggests. Gently massage your own shoulders using your three forefingers on either side of your neck. Use your right hand on the left shoulder and vice versa. Next, stand with your feet slightly apart and drop your body gently down from the waist, allowing your hands to fall freely in front of you until your palms are on floor, or you're stretched as far as is comfortable. en gently unfold your body, almost feeling each disc in your spine as you stand straight again. Put your arms behind your back and link your fingers together: now hunch your shoulders forward and back to release the tension in the muscles. 40
JANUARY2013
Finally, keeping your fingers linked, straighten your arms and raise them away from your body. en let your arms fall by your sides and relax. POWER OFF Turning off mobiles or tablets a few hours before going to bed could be one way of ensuring you get a good night's sleep - essential if you're going to maintain sufficient energy levels. Researchers at the Lighting Research Centre, New York, discovered that two or more hours of exposure to backlit devices, such as a smartphone or a tablet, suppresses melatonin. "Our study shows that a two-hour exposure to light from self-luminous electronic displays can suppress melatonin by about 22%," says programme director Mariana Figueiro. Returning to an old-fashioned alarm clock and having the self-control to ignore those mobile devices overnight or leaving them in another room could help your body and mind relax faster and easier at night. KEEP-FIT MEMORIES Sticking to a fitness routine is hard when the cold bites outside, but wrapping up warm and playing music which makes you feel nostalgic could beat the chills and keep you motivated, according to a study by researchers at the University of Southampton. Nostalgic music increased the perception of physical warmth, and also increased tolerance to painful cold, the research found, so heading down memory lane could give you a warm glow as well as keeping you on track and healthy.

Use organic vegetables including onions, parsnips, leeks, carrots, lots of garlic and lentils, and cook on a low heat in a covered pan to seal in the goodness, she says. "Stay off everything else, but if you need a bit of bulk with the soup, have some yeast and gluten-free toasted bread to dunk, or gluten-free crackers with organic unsalted butter," says Page. "Have the soup every couple of hours, or as often as you want. It helps clear the system and will make you feel better." Boost your system by also taking a vitamin C supplement, having fresh fruit and drinking herbal teas or hot water with fresh ginger and lemon. While you have a viral infection, keep off dairy products, she advises. FIGHT FATIGUE If you feel constantly tired, and you're not just suffering seasonal fatigue, it's worth visiting a GP to discover if there's a simple underlying cause for the problem, such as
iron-deficiency anaemia. "is can be revealed in a blood test, and it's also worth asking to have a serum ferritin blood test to detect low iron stores," says GP Dr Chris Steele. ose who have low iron levels are often recommended an iron supplement, such as Spatone, £8.25 for 28 sachets (www.boots.com), and there is also Spatone Apple, £10.75 for 28 sachets (www.boots.com), which is Spatone spa water with an apple taste and added vitamin C to aid the iron absorption. Nutritionist Shona Wilkinson says: "It ensures that the levels of healthy 'good' bacteria in your gut are maintained, keeping the bad bacteria at bay. "I'd advise taking the supplement at least a week before you travel and then continue to take one a day while you are away." e capsules ingredients include: clove, cinnamon and oregano oils, which may help prevent spoilage of food by contaminants, and other ingredients such as probiotics and garlic may help maintain the balance of friendly bacteria in the intestinal tract. It also includes BioCare's unique LAB4 complex, consisting of two specific proprietary strains of Lactobacillus acidophilus, along with Bifidobacteria bidifum and Bifidobacterium lactis. INJURY FREE LIFTING BY ROBERT SHANKS, DIRECTOR OF SPINE PLUS CLINICS
W
hether you’re about to hit the gym as part of a New Year fitness campaign or whether you’re feeling the pinch from regularly picking up the washing basket, learning how and why to lift properly is very important, particularly when it comes to managing and preventing lower back injuries. Low back pain significantly affects over 80% of the population at some point in their lives and much of this statistic can arguably be put down to the fact that most people lift incorrectly. e spine or more specifically the intervertebral discs are unlike other parts of the body in the sense that they have a limited nerve supply. is means that very often one is not aware of the discs being under strain until the accumulation of months or years of lifting (even quite light objects) incorrectly has reached a point where small tears form in the outer disc wall, this can be the source of several months of nagging discomfort. e body will often react to this situation with muscle spasm or at the very least muscle guarding meaning the long muscles of the spine tighten up. is then causes further compression and lack of mobility of the spine. If this situation prolongs the tears can very often become worse and allow the inner jelly like part of the disc (the “nucleus”) to herniated outwards, this is commonly known as a “slipped disc” capable of causing disabling sciatic pain as the “nerve root” next to the disc is squashed by the bulging portion of the disc. As the saying goes “prevention is better than cure” and personally I believe correct lifting techniques should be taught to children when at school. One of the most important aspects to correct lifting is maintaining a “neutral lumbar curve”, this means keeping a shallow arch in the lower back. Lifting with a rounded lower spine GREATLY increases the pressure on the discs. One of the most common mistakes is attempting to lift with a completely vertical spine as the tendency then is to tip the pelvis posteriorly which flattens or rounds the lower back. Another important feature of correct lifting is a good functioning “Transversus” muscle, deep in the abdomen. is muscle provides a corset of strength around the trunk and attaches onto the spine. When working properly this muscle helps

stabilise the spine preventing shearing forces on the discs which can lead to the formation of discs tears. Unfortunately the function of this muscle is impaired after pregnancy (by virtue of being stretched) and rather unhelpfully it is often automatically “switched off ” by the body’s neurological system when experiencing back pain. is is why it is so important to retrain this muscle with clinical Pilates exercises after pregnancy and after suffering a back injury. Spine Plus currently have six clinics in the London area including Chigwell, Waterloo and Harley Street. ey offer specialist treatment services for Back Pain, Neck Pain (and all other musculoskeletal disorders), including one of the latest therapies to the UK – IDD Computerised Non-Surgical Spinal Decompression erapy. LIFE IS (TOO) SWEET!
O
wn up. New Year, another diet plan? Got the book, signed up to classes and spent a small fortune on an array of horrid looking meals and supplements? How about asking yourself why you and half the population are back, yet again, on the dieting start line. e problem is that losing weight isn’t the main challenge - keeping it off is the struggle. Adopting a few radical longer term changes to our eating habits can solve that problem. As a nation, we have an alarming number of obese adults and children. e population is now over two stones heavier than 50 years ago. Where has it all gone wrong? One answer is the amount of sugar that is being consumed, which is in line with our ever expanding waistlines and a massive increase in illnesses such as diabetes and heart disease. It’s not just the sugars in sweet treats but a whole host of hidden sugars that have invaded our supermarket aisles. We have become a nation of sugar junkies and on average consume over 150 teaspoons every week. It’s amazing how much the manufacturers have quietly managed to cram into our shopping baskets and our taste buds have become so accustomed to it, we hardly notice. Once you start to read food labels though you’ll find it in the least obvious foods, far too often in the top three ingredients, stuffed into ready meals and added in scary quantities to plump up many low-fat foods. So how do we combat this? To start with our taste buds need re-educating by sugar detoxing. Quit sugars and sweeteners - good and bad - from your diet. ere’s no weighing, portion control, calorie counting or diet clubs but you will lose weight and feel more energised. It may sound extreme, but you’ll be amazed at how many tasty and healthy foods you can eat while detoxing. Plus the great news is that unlike many other diets it is easy to eat out and have a few glasses of wine! After that, good sugars can be reintroduced. Your sweet tooth will disappear and you will have gained an invaluable tool for weight control forever. Does this mean you are
46 JANUARY2013
condemned to a life without dessert or chocolate? Definitely not! However treats need to be seen as a luxury - even if they are made with sweeteners or so called ‘healthy’ sugars. An army of devotees have now adopted low sugar living and are reaping the benefits. Clare lost over two stone and dropped from a size 14 to a 10, Mark lost a whopping three stone and can now wear normal clothes and keep up with his kids - the benefits are real and lasting. If you are serious about being in control of your weight and improving your lifestyle, get on board and try a sugar detox. For more information about the benefits of cutting back on sugar, sugar detox programmes and lifestyle workshops visit www.ScrummyLife.co.uk or email info@scrummylife.co.uk ■

GET FIT 2013 STYLE
GRAVITY TRAINING
IN 2012 ZUMBA AND MILITARY-STYLE BOOT CAMPS WERE BIG NEWS - BUT A WHOLE HOST OF NEW EXERCISE CRAZES ARE SET TO HIT THE UK IN 2013. HERE'S A ROUND-UP OF SOME OF THE KEY FITNESS TRENDS COMING TO GYMS NEAR YOU.
BY THEA BABINGTON-STITT BODYWEIGHT TRAINING What is it? Replace the dumbbells with your body's own weight. Bodyweight exercises are easier on joints and allow for a wider range of movement than traditional weights do. Benefits: You'll get everything you would from using weighted equipment, but with less risk of injury, leaving you with a strong and toned body. Doubtful? Just look at the lean and muscular upper bodies of gymnasts, bodyweight training is their secret weapon. Get involved: With no paraphernalia involved, bodyweight training can be done anywhere you have enough room to lie down. To get started, ask a trainer at your local gym to show you a few techniques. THE LITHE METHOD What is it? Combine disciplines together and your body will work in ways it's never done before. Pilates and boxing (Piloxing) has already made its debut, but the new craze from across the pond is the Lithe Method - a blend of aerobics and strength training exercises created by an ex-cheerleader. Benefits: Mixing up workouts pushes your
48
JANUARY2013
body to work all key components. e Lithe Method burns fat and sculpts muscle all over by focusing on a different body part in each session. Get involved: e Lithe Method has yet to hit our shores, but if the popularity of the classes in New York has anything to do with it, classes should start popping up later in 2013. HIIT What is it? Don't let the name put you off HIIT, or high intensity interval training, involves short bursts of intense exercise with breaks in between. ink circuit training, but with less memories of PE classes and more chances to catch your breath. Benefits: HIIT burns calories and kicks your body's repair cycle into action, meaning you keep burning fat and calories for 24 hours after the session. Get involved: Any gym or personal trainer should be able to create a routine for you, but while biking, rope jumping and rowing are all great for HIIT, you don't actually need any equipment - anything that gets your heart rate going works. TRX SUSPENSION What is it? TRX is (rather tenuously) an
acronym for Total body Resistance eXercise and involves a nylon strap and a metal frame which is used to move your body into different positions for working various muscle groups. Benefits: With more than 300 different exercises possible with the TRX - think pull-ups, bicep curls and deltoid raises you're getting a low-impact workout with plenty of toning. Get involved: UK gyms are still picking up on this trend, but for those with cash to flash, the TRX system can be purchased for at-home use. Otherwise, try Soho gyms or Virgin Active. KRANKING What is it? Imagine a spinning class where the pedalling is done with your arms - and you've got your head around Kranking. Moving your arms for 30 minutes might not sound like an exercise class, but this is a serious workout. Benefits: Proven to burn as many calories in half an hour as a run at a 10 minute mile pace (270), Kranking will burn fat and banish those bingo wings. Get involved: Most UK gyms have a Kranking machine alongside the treadmills

and cross-trainers. Ask for a demo, or for when they have classes - music and company makes this training much easier. THE JACOBS LADDER What is it? Invented for those recovering from injury (back, knee, hip), this is a revolving ladder set at a 40 degree incline, similar to a StairMaster. Benefits: Each climbing stroke forces you into a long, dynamic move ensuring a full range of motion, working multiple muscle groups at one time. Get involved: Soho gyms and selected Fitness First locations are trialling the classes this year. VIPR What is it? It crept in last year, but now the ViPR is ready for a UK takeover. A cylindrical rubber tube which comes in seven weights ranging from 4-20kg, the ViPR has the same functionality as a combination of barbells, dumbbells, kettlebells, a stability ball and a medicine ball. Benefits: e ViPR focuses on conditioning the whole body, eradicating the uneven muscle tone that can come from sticking to one exercise. e results include increased flexibility, balance and strength while burning fat and calories. Get involved: Classes available in

nationwide gyms including Fitness First, Virgin Active and David Lloyd. GRAVITY TRAINING SYSTEM What is it? e GRAVITY Training System is a piece of equipment similar in appearance to a Pilates reformer, which can be set to different incline levels meaning you work against gravity for a tougher workout. Benefits: A low-impact, intense exercise, you'll wake up aching as your muscles adjust, and strengthen. GRAVITY Training will tone your core, and upper and lower body. Get involved: Available in gyms and personal training facilities nationwide, call 01494 769 222 to find the nearest centre with the equipment. MIND/BODY What is it? e yoga-loving US has gone bonkers for combining their favourite relaxing pastime with strength and aerobic exercise. One American hit is Cy-Yo, a one-hour workout combining 10 minutes of yoga, 40 minutes of speed cycling on a stationary bike, then 10 more minutes of yoga. Benefits: You get benefits of both exercises, so a cardio workout from the cycling and a lean, toning element from yoga, as well as refocusing the mind and calming down.
Get involved: Still relatively new in the UK, it's worth asking fitness instructors to look into starting a programme. Otherwise, learn a few basic yoga moves and practise them around your more strenuous workouts. SH'BAM What is it? Move over Zumba, Sh'Bam is on the way. e classes involve modern dance choreographed to chart-toppers and club hits, and are redeveloped every three months with the latest music and moves. Benefits: Provides excellent cardio work, fat and calorie burning (an average of 510 calories in a 50-minute class), without the boredom of plodding along solo on a treadmill. Get involved: Currently being trialled by selected UK gyms, we have yet to see which chains will take it on. DVDs are available online if you want to get started in your own home ■

CREATING A BEAUTIFUL EUROPEAN SMILE WORDS BY DEE BROWN
P
etya has the prestigious position of being our Patient Coordinator at Smile Design by Ash and is doing a great job in this important role since the practice opened in January 2011. Petya is very proud to show off her glamorous smile to our patients. After years of treatment she finally has the whiter, stronger teeth she always wanted. At 11 years old, Petya suffered trauma causing one of her front teeth to die. is caused a painful abscess which required a lengthy treatment to solve, as her teeth were not yet fully formed.
PETYA AFTER
PETYA BEFORE
After a few other root canal treatments, Petya became conscious of her smile and lost some of her confidence. At the age of 22, Petya had six metal bonded to porcelain crowns placed on her top front six teeth to make them stronger and improve the appearance. Her dentist in Bulgaria at that time made the crowns darker to match her natural tooth colour. Fast forward to 2012 and Petya is now smiling with confidence! Amazed by transformations Ash was providing for his patients, Petya decided it was her turn to take centre stage. “I must confess I was a bit worried something may go wrong as I’ve had lots of work done on my teeth in the past”. is fear didn’t last long as Petya relaxed in the dental chair listening to the classical sounds of Bond and being cared for by her colleagues. Petya worked together with Ash to create the smile she dreamed of, adamant that she didn’t want a full American smile. Petya and Ash designed a glamorous European look that is set to be the newest in Essex fashion! is was achieved by having beautiful temporary crowns that Ash hand crafted and custom finished. Once Petya was delighted with the shape of the new crowns, it was easy for 50 JANUARY2013
our master Ceramist technician, Rob Storrar of Amdecc Dental Laboratory to create the new, whiter (but natural looking) all porcelain crowns. Deciding on the colour of her new teeth was another concern for Petya. “I was afraid they would be too white. I trusted Ash’s experience and decided to go whiter like he suggested.” Compliments are a regular occurrence from her friends, family and our patients. Petya is now much more confident and hasn’t looked back since. is is clearly evident in her makeover photograph! For a FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION (and to meet Petya and Ash), telephone 0208 500 0544. EAT AWAY THE BLUES A RECENT STUDY REVEALED THAT TOMATOES HAVE WONDER-POWERS FOR REDUCING DEPRESSION. AS THE NEW YEAR APPROACHES, HERE'S A ROUND-UP OF OTHER FOODS THAT COULD HELP BANISH THE BLUES. BY THEA BABINGTON-STITT
T
hey've been livening up salads and pasta sauces for decades. But the humble tomato has far more going for it than just its bold colour and flavour. A recent study led by Dr Kaijun Niu from China's Tianjin Medical University found that tomatoes can have a significant impact on beating depression. ey're packed full of lycopene, which can reduce stress while also protecting against a number of major diseases including heart attacks and cancer. ough the exact reason can't be pinpointed, researchers studying the diets and mental health of 1,000 people aged over 70 in Japan found that those who ate at least two tomatoes a week were happier than those who didn't. Dieticians and nutritionists have long advocated the importance of what we eat on our mental wellbeing. "Tomatoes are packed with folate, which is involved in a reaction in the brain that has been proved to increase your sense of

wellbeing," says dietician Priya Tew (www.dietitianuk.co.uk). We've rounded up 10 of the top blues-beating foods to help kickstart a happy and healthy 2013. SALMON Whether you prefer yours Japanese-style as sashimi, smoked and in a bagel or baked with herbs, salmon is a tasty way to improve your mood. is healthy fish is packed full of Omega-3 fatty acids. "ese are associated with your brain and helping your cognitive functions," says Tew. Memory function is one area for which Omega-3s are believed to be vital. ere's also evidence that they can help reduce depression. Plus, salmon is an excellent source of vitamin B12 which aids the production of 'happy hormone' serotonin. SPINACH Popeye was definitely onto something with his love of these leafy greens. Spinach is bursting with folic acid, magnesium and
vitamins A and C, all of which are connected with improving your mood. "Lack of iron and folate can make you feel weak and lethargic," says Tew. "A lack of folates in your diet increases your risk of feeling depressed, so eating green vegetables like spinach would help improve your mood." Magnesium has a wealth of health benefits, too, including being a natural sleep aid and helping to control stress. EGGS Don't worry, we're not about to tell you that the way to happiness is by drinking raw eggs! But make sure you include eggs in your diet one way or another. eir high protein content keeps you feeling full and alert, and eggs also contain Omega-3, zinc, B vitamins and iodide, which is useful for maintaining healthy teeth, hair, nails and thyroid function. e previously shunned yolk is in for a comeback, too, as it's packed with vitamins D and B12, perfect for getting those serotonin levels up. "D vitamins definitely have an impact on your

HEALTH BEAUTY
mood, and are involved in energy release," says Tew. "Getting a steady release of energy will improve your sense of wellbeing and happiness." RED MEAT Good news for everyone tired of hearing bad things about red meat - the high iron levels found in meats like beef and lamb encourage production of the mood-regulating brain chemical dopamine. Studies suggest that the iron-deficient among us (a common problem for women) could be more likely to suffer with depression. Red meat is also a great source of B vitamins and protein. But vegetarians shouldn't worry: good old spinach is a strong source of iron, too. GARLIC is cheap and popular herb doesn't just add flavour to your cooking - it has a long list of health-enhancing qualities too. For starters, it increases blood flow around your body, boosting both energy and mood. Eaten raw, whether whole or chopped up into a salad, garlic boosts serotonin levels and overall wellbeing. Just be sure to pocket some minty chewing gum if you do make a habit of chomping on raw garlic... DARK CHOCOLATE It's true what they say about eating
chocolate making you feel better - the combination of its smooth texture and sweet flavour releases mood-elevating endorphins. Not that we needed an excuse! "ere hasn't been any hard evidence of this," says Tew. "But they do release serotonin into your brain, which can improve your feelings of happiness." e health benefits only really apply to dark chocolate, with at least 60% cocoa content. Unlike the sugary milk version, dark chocolate is lower in fat and sugar and also contains antioxidants. MUSSELS Moules frites, anyone? Mussels have some of the highest levels of vitamin B12 in any known food. is wonder vitamin has been found to help reduce depression, stress levels and brain shrinkage. e shellfish also contains a calming cocktail of iodine, zinc and selenium which are vital for keeping your body's mood master - the thyroid working properly. Plus, mussels taste great with a glass of white wine which (in moderation of course!) will give you an additional dose of antioxidants. BANANAS Long heralded as the ultimate hangover cure, and a fantastic low-calorie snack, bananas truly are one of nature's candies. eir natural sugars make them deliciously
sweet (yet without the fat and cholesterol found in many sweet treats) and also help the body produce serotonin. Like spinach, the high levels of magnesium found in bananas are credited with aiding sleep and reducing anxiety. Plus, they're a strong source of potassium which, as well as being important for nerve and muscle function, can also help reduce anxiety and stress. ORANGES Even if you don't pretend you're in Florida every time you eat an orange, their vitamin C levels are great at putting a sunny smile on your face. Your body reacts to the smell and taste of oranges to encourage serotonin production. As well as boosting your immune system and helping keep bugs at bay, vitamin C lowers blood pressure and stress levels. Kiwis are another fruit packed with that all-important C vitamin. WHOLEGRAINS rough their iron and folate levels, fruits and vegetables are very important for overall physical and mental wellbeing, but carbohydrates are also important - and wholegrains are especially beneficial for maintaining stable moods. "Wholegrain foods such as wholemeal bread and brown rice contain B vitamins," says Tew. "ese are definitely shown to be linked to mental wellbeing and decreased risks of depression."

o mark the 75th Anniversary of the historic site of the Pinewood Studios in September 2011 the massive 35ft high Elizabethan fire surround which forms the main entrance was painstakingly restored by students from the Buckinghamshire New University. is was a tricky and prestigious job and the MA. Furniture Conservation, Restoration & Decorative Arts students spent nine days restoring colour and finish to the vast 16th century solid oak structure, bought to Pinewood from Ilam Hall in Derbyshire in 1930. e university has been acknowledged as a source for talent in the various aspects of care and restoration for more than twenty years with many worthy patrons to their credit, but there is traditionally a problem exposing such skills to the commercial world. ank fully that has been addressed by a new enterprise called Bucks Conservation, the aims of which are to channel commercial conservation and restoration projects to BA (Hons) and MA Furniture Conservation, Restoration and Decorative Arts recent alumni. I know about this because I was invited to attend its official launch at Fernandez & Wells, Somerset House, London on Monday 8 October 2012. is was followed by a guided and private tour of e Courtauld Gallery, which if you haven’t visited is well worth the time as it is, as it rightfully claims to be, one of the finest small art museums in the world. So access to educated restoration of our heritage will be more readily available than ever and by no means restricted to furniture. Indeed the massive chandelier in Halton House in Buckinghamshire has just received some tender loving care from some recent alumni and wonderful it now looks indeed. To compliment the growth of interest and talent in restoration and conservation one of the most reassuring things in the last decade has

been the establishment of young artisans creating truly beautiful work in all areas of the decorative arts. At the risk of sounding as if my life revolves around going to launch parties and visiting shows – which I can assure you it does not – I was invited to the opening of PAD. Set within a vast fabric structure in Berkley Square, London, this is without question London’s leading fair for 20th Century art, design and decorative arts. Inspiring a unique spirit of collecting, PAD epitomises how modern art, photography, design, decorative and tribal arts interact to reveal astonishing combinations and create the most individual and staggering interiors. Prominent international galleries from major cities across Europe, North America and Asia come together to offer an exceptional panorama of the most coveted and iconic works available on the market today. Anyone receiving this magazine for more than twelve months may remember that I reported on this last year and was absolutely entranced by the furniture made by the Irish phenomenon Joseph Walsh. He astounded again this year with a ‘shelf ’ sculptured from a multitude of laminates to form as if made of petrified fabric blowing in the wind. is recent fair was by far the best I’ve seen with such innovations that gladden the heart, and a leading gallery in this respect is Pearl Lam Design. At PAD they were
presenting six international artists and designers from very different design scenes, one of whom, André Dubreuil, produced the most amazing fusion of ancient and modern chinoiserie. A major piece entitled Mr Big was a version of the traditional cabinet on stand but what a cabinet and what a stand! Using steel, copper, stone and enamel it’s a ferocious yet beautiful and functional work of Art. In contrast Christian Elwes of Entwistle was showing, from their tyribal inventory a stylized and most elegant ceremonial bird head club, or Poro Wa Ramaru, from the Kanak peoples of New Caledonia. Visually it stops you in your tracks, as no doubt it would if you were hit by it, but it is of such compelling sculptural form that it symbolises wealth and high rank rather than being a combat weapon. Nevertheless stunning in every sense of the word. At PAD there is lighting the intricacies of which defy understanding, décor that makes you want to go home and start again and furniture and accessories that make you smile and covet. Overall it is the imagination and the ingenuity of the young designers and artisans that make for such a great show. I especially like the way so many are taking tradition and twisting it around with new ideas, materials and techniques. Zoe Ouvrier is a name to watch if you are thinking about antiques of the
future. She creates unique pieces from carved wood as well as paintings and lace-adorned decorative screens. Using plywood that has first been painted and then intricately and painstakingly engraved, Ouvrier’s works display the motifs of plant stems and the roots, nodes, and shoots often concealed underground. e resulting artworks are a beautiful tribute to nature and expert craftsmanship. Speaking of which, names and craftsmanship that is, I have recently been reminded of one of the great names in the world of Art Nouveau bronzes, Bruno Zach. Zach was born in the town of Schitomir, Ukrainein in 1891, the year my grandfather formerly established his antiques business in Tring, and died in 1945. He studied at the Vienna Academy and subsequently worked for various foundries in Vienna producing the finest quality bronze works including western, oriental, sporting, animalier, art deco and erotic subjects, sometimes incorporating ivory carved to replicate the unclothed parts of the model. One of his most desirable figures is entitled ‘e Riding Crop’ of which there were two versions. One stands 32 inches high, of which there were more than ninety produced and the other, at just a third of that height, of which no more than six are recorded. Asked to find an example of the latter I went to the one person I know who might help, David Hickmet. David’s Gallery 85 is at that number in Portobello Road and sure enough, and as luck would have it one of his ‘finders’ – David has people all over the world sourcing his speciality – had just located the one illustrated. A perfect example with a patina that guarantees authenticity, just like a piece of my 18th century furniture. So horizons are broadened all the time and with pieces from Elizabeth I to Elizabeth II it’s been a busy month ■

WELCOME TO AN AGE OF ELEGANCE A NEW YEAR BRINGS NEW DECOR TRENDS. GABRIELLE FAGAN TAKES AN EARLY LOOK AT THE INTERIORS THEMES THAT WILL BE MAKING AN IMPACT IN 2013. BY GABRIELLE FAGAN

ag a butterfly, splash out on blues, whip up some wallpaper and show a well-turned leg if you want your home to be bang on trend this year. While that might sound like a surprising recipe for dazzling decor, they're just a few of the ingredients from themes which will feature in the homes collections over the coming months. e good news is that embracing a look shouldn't mean a complete revamp, unless you have the budget and desire to do just that, because the trends are, in the main, fresh and interesting developments of existing decor interpretations. So French-style furniture with pretty, carved legs; florals; botanical designs featuring birds and butterflies; colour and wallpapers will continue to star. If they're already to your taste you may only need to add a few more accessories or a new statement piece to refresh a room and show off your style credentials "French elegance is a key trend for spring," predicts Caroline Hodgson, home accessories buying manager for Barker & Stonehouse. "To create this sophisticated look, combine understated wood with pale linens. Try adding neutral table lamps and multi-panelled mirrors to create a cool ambience." Our love affair with florals endures, she says, and the new collections will range from vintage-style faded blooms through to watercolour effects and small prints with dainty daisies or camellias. "Whatever you do, don't miss out on the blues," she advises. "Denim, cobalt and sky blue all blend well and will create a cool and calming atmosphere. "In general, whatever your taste, the aim should be to conjure an atmosphere of tranquillity, serenity and sophistication so rooms are a sanctuary and retreat from the pressures and stresses of the outside world." Follow the experts' guide to key looks for 2013.

TURN BACK TIME Nostalgia is always heightened when times are tough and continues to inspire present-day designs whether it's vintage style or the fashion for mid-century modern furniture. "Spring is all about reviving eras, from the 1920s through to the 1940s but with fresh interpretations," says Alice Duggan, head of home buying at Debenhams. "Designer Matthew Williamson creates a bright and eccentric take on a Forties country manor house style, whilst Julien Macdonald has keyed into 1920s art deco style and teamed it with vivid colour." Debenhams' own Heirloom collection is an eclectic spin on English style mixing floral, paisley and embroidered fabrics with quirky patterned metal chairs, botanical cushions and eye-catching accessories such as stags' heads and bookends. Spot the trend: Butterfly Home by Matthew Williamson peach Georgette bed linen set, from £55 for a double; set of three storage boxes, £30, all from Debenhams. John Lewis echoes mid-century style in its Pioneer collection with retro MissPrint mountains wallpaper, £59.95 a roll, and sleek Livingstone sideboard, £799. FLOWER POWER Florals feature in all the major interiors collections, but in tune with our growing enthusiasm for colour and pattern they will be even bolder and brighter in 2013. "is season, the trend for floral vintage pattern will be strong," predicts Josephine Bennett, senior design manager at Laura Ashley. "Our Palace Garden collection features an unapologetically glamorous design of lush red blooms and teams well with black cabinet furniture, luxuriously upholstered sofas and chairs, and crystal chandeliers and mirrored accessories. "ere's a strong trend for opulence and sophistication and layering of textures in interior."
AE__ 07/01/2013 13:31 Page 2
Spot the trend: Palace Garden Chiswick wallpaper, from £28 a roll, and Chiswick Printed cushion, £40, from Laura Ashley. Marks & Spencer's Colourfield collection features a rug from £75 and flower cushion, £19.50. NATURAL WORLD Decor fluttering with birds, bees and butterflies and designs featuring leaf prints reflect our passion to bring the great outdoors into our rooms, as well as a desire to blur the boundary between home and garden. "Our Botanist collection draws on our national obsession with gardening and it has a nostalgic element, as well as a feeling of nurture," says eo Williams, head of the design studio at John Lewis. "It's about rediscovering the pleasures of life's simple things and reconnecting with nature in the digital age. "Natural motifs feature with ladybirds, bees and butterflies on pretty pressed glass and enamelware. Blocks of pale colour are accented by pretty florals." Bed linen in the range is printed with hand-drawn birds, and knitted throws have a hand-crafted feel with layered patterns and textures. "is look has a casual and informal feel with a mix of vintage-inspired pieces and more contemporary shapes which are unfussy and practical," says Williams. Spot the trend: Cow Parsley mineral wallpaper, £22 a roll, Wild Herb rug, from £225, and Garden coasters with butterfly design, set of four, £15, all from John Lewis. House of Fraser's delightful upholstered Garda chair, printed with butterflies, £599. DARE TO BARE A pared-back, more masculine style featuring earthy tones and contrasts in textures is one of the strongest and most versatile trends for this year. Interpretations can include industrial style, with a rough hewn unfinished look, or a more streamlined, contemporary approach using wood, stone and distressed leather but softened and warmed by touches of colour from blues to lemon yellows. "One of our key themes is Naturals, a furniture and accessories story of muted tones," says Sue Roberts, head of design for House of Fraser. "Simple and sophisticated, this trend of earthy browns and stony grey accessories mixed with walnut and oak furniture has a slight retro feel." Spot the trend: Linea Naturals collection at House of Fraser includes a handsome dark wood Dean sideboard, £869, and accessories, a Graduated wooden vase, £33, and Ribbed vase, £20. Littlewoods has a colonial interpretation with a Winchester 3-seater sofa, £949, and African masks, £35. CRAZY FOR COLOUR While a neutral palette always appeals as it's easy on the eye and compatible with most decor choices, colour is increasingly making an impression on our homes. Blues (think denim, cobalt and sky blue), deep greens, muddy
pastels and lemony yellows are the top choices from the colour wheel for 2013, with colour specialists Pantone pronouncing that Emerald green will be the star shade. "I think 2013 will be a brave and colourful year in terms of interior decor," says Julie Hassan, senior buying manager for home at Liberty. "Our travels inspire us and exotic landscapes allow for colour clashing and exciting patterns and these will emerge in playful and magical schemes with real impact. "Amazon greens, fiery oranges, lagoon blues and sensual reds can be picked and paired according to how far an individual wants to go to embrace the dramatic trend." Spot the trend: Liberty's beautiful printed fabrics start from around £65 a metre. Make a statement with an eye-catching emerald Florence sofa upholstered in vogue teal, currently on sale at £1,139 from Sofa Workshop. Check out House of Fraser's Urban Tribe bed linen, double duvet set, £60, featuring zigzag pattern in yellow, green and purple, and its Linea Nautical 'Pretty Denim' double duvet cover set, £80. CHIC ELEGANCE Delicate detail, elegant period style and a muted colour palette all combine for a feminine-friendly style which is an enduring classic. "One of our new collections is a range of French-inspired occasional furniture and chairs called Aurelie," says Emma Mann, home and lifestyle design manager at Sainsbury's. "It features upholstered toile de jouy patterns in calming shades, grey and pale blue. is beautifully elegant furniture collection ushers in a classic French style which we think will be hugely popular this year." Spot the trend: Aurelie French occasional chair, £498, Wingback bed, £889, from Sainsbury's. House of Fraser's Shabby Chic range includes the Primrose double bedstead, currently on sale at £999. WORK THE WALLS Wallpaper has made a huge comeback over the last couple of years and the choice of designs is greater than ever, ranging from patterns, retro-designs echoing the Fifties or those brilliantly mimicking effects such as stone, brick and wood. "ere's a definite light and dark side to the wallpaper story for spring 2013," says Paula Taylor, colour specialist for Graham & Brown. "e lighter side is cosy and fresh with country-inspired prints. Patterns are soft, feminine and flowers will once again feature heavily with classical trellis and scroll designs. Colours will be soft and inspired by nature, ranging from duck egg and pale green hedgerow to wisteria and crocus." at trend contrasts sharply with one which walks on the dark side, featuring warm, dense shades, particularly grey through to midnight black, that may be brightened by flashes of blue or red. "For the darker side, our designs are inspired by folklore and fairy tales and woodland and forest settings," says Taylor. Spot the trend: Graham & Brown's Spellbound wallpaper collection, from £44 to £69 per roll ■ JANAUARY2013 57

AUDI A6 IS NUMBER 1 LUXURY USED CAR
Audi has scooped the What Car? Used Car of the Year 2012 award in the hotly contested Executive and Luxury sector. Knocking rivals BMW and Jaguar squarely into second and third places respectively, the Audi A6 was the model that most impressed the judges across all aspects of ownership and driving pleasure. Central to Audi’s success was the strength of the Audi diesel engines, which enjoy an enviable reputation for their impressive combination of power, economy and refinement. Commenting on the winning model, the judges reported: “e Audi A6 has all you need in a saloon at a sensible price. It manages to blend refinement with a sporty, grippy driving experience. Wind and road noise are kept at bay, even at motorway speeds, and you rarely hear the refined 2.0 TDI diesel engine.” Essex Audi supplies literally thousands of Audi Approved Used Cars every year, through its Essex and London-based network of six Audi centres. Every model is subject to a comprehensive 145–point vehicle check and then supplied with a minimum of 12 months unlimited mileage warranty and roadside assistance, which means that customers can buy with absolute confidence. Prospective buyers can choose from over 400 used Audi cars, many of which are featured on the group website www.essex-audi.co.uk and all are also accessible through the individual Audi centres. 64

amilies on Repton Park came together for an early Christmas party, the main beneficiaries of which were patients in Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, as well as needy children in the local community. Organised by the Repton Park events team, the invitation only event marked the turning on of the Christmas lights on the gated development, located on Manor Road, close to the Chigwell and Woodford border. And in return for their exclusive invitations, guests were asked to bring a wrapped gift, which the events team donated on Repton Park’s behalf, to children less fortunate than their own. Presents were shared with the Incognito gospel choir, who performed at the event and who are raising money for nine year-old Nathan Francis, who has spent most of his life attending Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital and who needs treatment currently only available in the United States. e remainder of the gifts were donated by the Repton Park events team to a local charity or church.

“is is the second time that the team has staged an event aimed at reinforcing the real sense of community on Repton Park, while the toy drive ensured that it would also benefit two really worthwhile causes,” said Hayley Hunt, one of the organisers and director of Hunt Property Services. “Our summer spectacular raised more than £20,000 for Haven House Children’s Hospice, but this time the emphasis was on collecting toys, rather than cash,” she added. “Unlike the summer function, this time it was Repton Park families only for a fun, but intimate event.” Father Christmas led a parade that included Miss Clause, Santa’s little helper elves and a white pony and sleigh. Children were given lichen with which to feed the reindeer and a special crafts table was provided, as well as a dedicated Christmas letter box, allowing them to post their wish lists in good time for Christmas n With thanks to Capture Photography
