Since the first event in 2007, Porsche Classics at the Castle has established itself as a unique event for enthusiasts and owners of all Porsche model types built 1948-1973. is year sees the fifth edition of an event, which is established as the foremost meeting of this kind in the UK with visitors attending from all over the world. ere will be exclusive parking for Pre 74 Porsches and dedicated parking for more modern Porsches but you don't have to come in a Porsche to be part of the experience. We gather to celebrate the philosophy that: "Not everyone's idea of a perfect Porsche is a new one and not everyone's idea of a "classic" Porsche is a perfect one." It’s for one day only so Porsche owner or Porsche enthusiast, the date to mark in your diary is Sunday 17th July. Do not miss the unique opportunity to see a rare appearance of a significant piece of VW and Porsche automotive history on wheels. e Porsche Design TYPE 64. ere will also be a number of rare and significant historic Porsche sports racing cars that have performed notably in international motorsport.

Building on water Some of the country’s foremost house builders, architects and surveyors throw caution to the wind, quite literally, when taking part in their exclusive industry event, the Little Britain Challenge Cup, Europe’s largest commercial sailing regatta, which takes place every September in Cowes, on the Isle of Wight. This year’s event, taking place 8th-11th September, received a record number of firm entries during the first week of opening their on-line booking service, something that particularly delighted the Little Britain Chairman, David Smith, from Surrey-based luxury house builders Octagon who comments,

“We see the LBCC as the perfect mix of a wonderful few days’ racing combined with some great networking opportunities. Anybody who is anybody, is here for the four day extravaganza, either bringing down company members to crew, or inviting clients who love to join in for both the racing and partying afterwards. We forsee this being a sell out year, so are urging regulars and newcomers alike, who have yet to register, not to delay, so they can be assured of place in September.” Both those wishing to actually compete, or simply join in from the quayside, there is a jam packed programme of events which will take 1500 guests through from sunrise to the early hours throughout the regatta period.

Everyone is invited to join in the evening parties held at Cowes Yacht Haven. This year, the Friday night extravaganza is Viva Las Vegas, giving guests the chance to dress up in theme, and take part in a fun filled programme of entertainment. This includes getting hitched in the Little White Wedding Chapel, and special guest appearances from ‘Elvis’, ‘Frank’, and the lovely ‘Vegas Show Girls’. The LBCC is more than just a jolly, as it continues to support a number of charities, which, more than ever, need help and support. Not least the GBR Paralympic Sailing Team. This is the LBCC’s last big chance to raise funds for these most magnificent of sailors, to ensure they enter the 2012 Olympics in winning style. Already well into serious training on the Olympic waters of Weymouth, the seven young individuals are determinedly gearing themselves towards victory, despite their varying degrees of disability which range from cerebral palsy through minus a right forearm to a double below the knee amputee.

The LBCC money really does make a huge difference, as these sailors, all professionals and regatta champions, get nothing in the way of handouts from government or councils. This is the time that costs start to soar, as the team require more boats, which come hand in hand with higher maintenance bills. As well as actively overturing sponsors themselves, to help keep their boats in prime condition and in the water, they rely on the generosity of people like the contestants and guests who attend the Little Britain Challenge Cup.

TO RAISE MONEY IN SUPPORT OF THE CHILDREN’S HOSPICE: RICHARD HOUSE.

e Jail Break initiative has already proven very successful. Groups of people are carefully compiling their complex itineraries and calling upon friends, businesses and supporters to help their mission. Merging a great cause whereby the local community, businesses and friends, can all be involved to support the charity and the families who rely upon the hospice.

e children’s hospice needs £3.1 million each year to provide services to children with life-limiting conditions and to also help support their families. Many of the children are not expected to reach adulthood, so the hospice provides a whole variety of experiences and facilities. Specialist amenities

Glen omas stated: “We see this as a great opportunity to make the most of the fantastic network of businesses and individuals we know. Jailbreak allows us to raise awareness of Richard House and related organisations working for children.” Asked whether assistance would be required…

He said: “Today we should all feel pride as we have raised £150,000, which in the current economic climate is not only an outstanding achievement, but also a credit to all who

have given to this charity.” He continued: “It is only through personal circumstances when someone has to rely upon the services of a charity like Jewish Care, that one can truly appreciate the benefits and the successful work that it does. I currently find myself in that position so can speak from the heart in saying thank you and asking those present from Jewish Care to share the pride I have standing here.” Jeff Witzenfeld was presented with the Monty Shafron Trophy, having won the overall tournament with 44 points. Captain of the day, Stanley Perry ran a diamond earring raffle, raising an additional £1,100 on the day. Jewish Care’s Deputy President Dame Gail Ronson DBE received the cheque on behalf of the charity and said: “e support we have received from RAGS has been remarkable, and will go a long way in helping us

realise our hopes for the future of Sinclair House. It goes without saying that Sinclair House is one of our most important and unique facilities. It continues to be a vital focal point for this community and it is not just the breadth of the work but also the scale which is impressive. Your support today will ensure we can continue to meet the needs of all those who rely on the centre.” Ariella Groman – Marks, a Doris and Sidney Gold RAGS Scholar, had just returned from a year in Israel while Gila Rome, also a Scholar, was preparing to leave for her gap year. Talking about her Israel experience, Miss Groman – Marks said, “I am honoured that I was given the opportunity to encounter such a wide and varied learning experience. From children to Holocaust survivors, I was humbled to be able to share their lives for a short period of time. e things I saw and the people I met have changed my outlook on life and I want to

elebrities, socialites and families gathered at Gaynes Park, Epping last weekend for the 6th annual Duke of Essex Polo Trophy, organised by Media 10. e Essex social event of the year did not disappoint as the stars flocked to enjoy the VIP hospitality including a 4 course lunch by Masterchef presenter Gregg Wallace. Celebrity guests included Peter Andre, Alex Reid, Chantelle Houghton, Dane Bowers, East 17, Gary Lucy, Gareth Gates, Nick Knowles, Pollyanna Woodward, as well as the cast of e Only Way is Essex, who arrived in style by helicopter. Rumours were flying as Lydia and Arg arrived together, once again sparking talk of a possible reconciliation? roughout the day the sun shone as thousands enjoyed a whole host of entertainment in both the VIP and family areas including the Dinky Derby, Aerostars aerobatic displays, show jumping, Jousting, live music and fashion shows as well as the Celebrity Shoot Out between Alex Reid and new girlfriend, Big Brother winner, Chantelle Houghton. After weeks of training the couple looked confident on their polo ponies as they competed in a penalty shoot out, which ended with victory for Chantelle Houghton representing the South American Team. A highlight in the VIP tent was the charity auction in aid of the Lord’s Taverners. With money can’t buy lots including Club Wembley Tickets, Land Rover Experiences, a weekend retreat for 12 to a mansion in Cornwall and a holiday to Bali, it is no wonder that thousands of pounds was raised for such a worthy cause.

ou never know where an act of kindness may lead. I’m not saying that people should be helpful in order to reap rewards, however life is interesting and you just never know where a good turn may lead...

we are not islands and in an emergency, the probabilities are that our neighbours would be more accessible and able to assist quicker than other family members, simply because they are just seconds away from where we live.

As the summer approaches and we go on holiday whether in the UK or abroad, we do hope our neighbours will keep an eye-out for our properties. As we try and cut off from the toil and grind of our daily routines, it is always reassuring to know that upon our return, everything is exactly, as we left it! Although our lives within a community are not at the 1950’s and 1960’s standards when most women were at home and knew everybody else’s business, in the 21st century, it is easy to become an island, living our own lives within our four walls. We are all busy with everything that is juggled with respect to family, home and work. However,

We can help in ways which are easy and not difficult or time-consuming. Whether just checking the post has been pushed through the letter-box properly, delivered parcels on the forecourt are taken in, plants and gardens watered (assuming no hose pipe ban!) and perhaps even using their forecourt to park our car. An empty forecourt and closed curtains can sometimes be an open invitation to those with more sinister occupations!

So with this in mind and the importance of those around us, living in the same locale and where kindness and assistance can make a very big difference,

I SEARCHED FOR AN INTERESTING STORY ON THE INTERNET. AT 2.30 A.M. I SPOTTED A GEM!*

Forty-five years ago, a young and impoverished Austrian boy, born just after the Second World War came to Britain aged 19. With determination and an eye on stardom and success, his plight was understood and he was offered help. Penniless and desperate, a kind husband and wife saw his potential and kindly, invited him to live with them and their family, which consisted of six children. e couple ‘Wag’ and Dianne Bennett, immediately realised his potential and invited him to work out, at their gym. Originally, their first gym was in Wanstead but two more had now been established and in particular, the famous

Forest Gate gym. And who was this young lad, what happened to him, and why is he noted in this feature as a prime example of a recipient who benefitted from local kindness? Well, his name was Arnold Schwarzenegger! … If you have any comments on this feature please email Michelle@starcopywriting.com. www.starcopywriting.com *Source: http://www.timesonline.co.u k/tol/comment/obituaries/arti cle4862637.ece

Wanstead exhibition Celebrates the literary Greats from essex WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

here is an exciting new exhibition in Wanstead, which will showcase an interesting link between Essex and literature. e exciting literary figures who either lived, or had a base in Essex and the great works penned in the Epping Forest area. e exhibition, Literary Footsteps in the Forest, will be held at e Temple, Wanstead. History and background of authors will include some of the nation’s greatest writers: John Clare, Alfred Tennyson, T.E. Lawrence and William Morris. Alfred Tennyson. Revered poet laureate who lived in High Beech between 1837-1840. During this time, he wrote e Talking Oak and Locksley Hall. He developed a friendship with Dr. Matthew Allen and also visited his mental asylum, where he supposedly, developed a friendship with John Clare. John Clare. Famous English poet who loved the English countryside. Clare is now

considered one of the most popular and important 19th-century poets in Britain. His literary career began after reading James ompson’s Seasons which inspired him to begin to write poetry. In 1820 he published his first book of poems under the name - “John Clare, a Northampton Peasant.” He had an unusual literary connection with Essex as a patient at the asylum, (High Beech) in 1837! John Clare was often encouraged to take walks in the Forest and write poetry. During his time at the asylum he suffered from delusions and pretended to be Lord Byron. Clare later escaped in 1841 and died in 1864. William Morris. During his life he wrote and published many works of fiction and poetry. As a child he would frequently ride about Epping Forest where he would often observe animal nature and the countryside. is became the inspiration for his writing. He wanted to protect the natural world from the dangers of

pollution and industrialism where he would write passionately about preserving the natural wonder and beauty of Epping Forest. T.E. Lawrence – (Lt. Col. omas Edward Lawrence) Having established a friendship with Vyvyan Richards (local school master at Bancrofts) he set up a hut on Pole hill (the hut has been re-erected on the grounds of e Warren but not accessible to the public) from which he wrote Seven Pillars of Wisdom (1992) which was turned into the epic film: Lawrence of Arabia (1962). Speaking exclusively to Fish Media about the exhibition, City of London researcher Steven Denford, commented:

TALENT: ELIZABETHAN COURTIERS, FAMOUS VICTORIANS; WORLD WAR ONE POETS AND MANY MORE. COME AND FIND OUT WHERE THEY LIVED AND LEARN THEIR STORIES.”

Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET

A

re you always looking for a bargain, or would you ignore value and pay “over the odds?” I have probably said it before, but at my age I find that I do regularly repeat myself. So if you have heard it, please forgive me, valuation is not a Science. e pound per square foot equation is the roughest of guides, but in the main it still boils down to a “like for like” evaluation when a professional gives an opinion. However as there can never be a true “like for like” valuation, one has to take a view when expressing such opinion. One must remember that professional opinions are given totally devoid of any emotion and it is that word “emotion” which can in many cases throw the professional rule book out of the window. If you ask anyone, as I have done, why they decided to buy their home, they will in almost every case say they were not encouraged to buy because it was ridiculously cheap. Usually it was because of something quite small, like the colour of the woodwork, the windows, the style of the roof, the garden or just the feeling which they experienced when walking through the front door. In short, it was an emotional decision, the sight of something that triggered a subconscious thought which produced a feeling of well being, or maybe calmness or joy.

If I really knew what it was I would not, at my age, still be sitting behind a desk trying to convince the “undecided” to “decide”. I would have bottled it and sold it to the army of property developers who still believe that by installing a posh sound, vision and lighting system, and throwing in a plethora of flat screen T.V.’s encourages the ever unconfident and undecided buyer to part with their hard earned cash, at prices beyond those achieved at the top of the last peak, 4 years ago. I can remember the times when I first ventured into what was then known as “big time Estate Agency”. I would go along to the local auction rooms, which in those days were held on the first floor of the now derelict Bald Hind Pub in Hainault Road. e Auctions were held by one of the profession’s ultimate gentleman, the late William Worthy. I would listen in awe to Bill and others, many times my senior, discuss the market. A common quote proffered concerned the very few Agents that practiced in the area at that time. Among the most experienced were the late Tony Cheke and John Bairstow, Leslie Stolkin, Randalls and Douglas Allen (prior to their metamorphosis) and their ridiculous current practice of offering property at choice of prices. It reminds me of Sir Bruce’s Game Show with the “higher and lower” options. Sorry, I digress. e talk around the rostrum at every

auction would always include comments describing a certain Agent as one to buy from, but not to sell through, and then to describe another Agent in reverse terms.

these cases. Particularly during the last few weeks when a competitors SOLD subject to contract board appears on a house that I pitched for.

Being very young and quite naïve I could not justify this distinction. It is only recently, and I mean within the last two to three weeks, that I have actually seen evidence which would support such pigeon holing.

I console myself by saying “you can’t win them all.” I should be saying lucky agent. Was it – Lucky? Lucky that they found a party who ignored the fact that we are in a recession, ignored the fact that their Bank or Building would undoubtedly down value their purchase and lucky that they also chose to ignore the fact it may take many a long year before they would have any chance on seeing any capital growth in their investment.

It is rare that any major local property comes to market without the owner consulting me, but it is only in about three cases in ten that I actually receive instructions to sell. Probably overall in 30% of the cases, the owner wants to instruct more than one agent, which rules our Agency out, for as most of you know, we insist on having Sole Agency even if it only for five to six weeks. In the other four or so cases out of ten the owner has received a higher valuation than our own opinion. I have spent many an hour berating myself that I should perhaps have been more bullish in

Perhaps it was just that they purchased from the agent to sell through not the agent to buy from? Or was it the magic emotional enigma which pushed them into paying, which in my opinion was “over the odds”. Have a great Summer until my next missive after the holidays. Summer Holiday PreParationS on lougHton HigH road WORDS: JOSHUA HARRIS

T

o those of you who have been afforded the opportunity of embarking on a trip across the globe this summer, vacating the volatile British weather in search for new culture, adventure or tranquillity, then this feature may be of use to you. e purpose of this editorial is to browse over some aspects of holiday preparation which may enrich your vacation experience. Additionally, with all products and consumables being available on Loughton High Road, this may also afford you more time for last-minute errands before take-off.

1. Dining abroad… Consumption of unhygienic food and beverages accounts for a large segment of traveller’s illness. is generally divulges from drinking tap water in some areas, due to differing regulatory authorities and water sources. erefore, before departing, find out if it is advisable to consume the foreign water supply – and if not, elect bottled mineral water to avoid digestive distress. Similarly, this includes avoiding ice in beverages, and using bottled water for oral care. With respect to food choices, it is commonly inferred that, if prepared correctly, hot foods carry less risk of bacteria. Raw vegetables such as those in a fresh, cold salad may have been soaked in tap water – however, if boiled or steamed, the associated health risks diminish. A recommended supplement for travellers, which allegedly strengthens your immune and digestive systems, are probiotics, available in capsule form at Holland and Barrett, 212 High Road, Loughton. For example, Quest Vitamins’ Acidophilus Plus - £17.19 for 120 capsules, contains 2 billion probiotic bacteria per capsule, however if more potency is required, probiotic supplements from this store generally reach approximately 20 billion viable organisms per capsule. e general recommendation is to begin taking the probiotic supplement a few days before travel and to continue this regime over the course of the trip (please ask in-store for details).

2. Tanning Tips… For holiday destinations abundant with clear blue skies and a glimmering sun, take into account the associated health risks to your skin. To stay protected, avoid sun exposure between 12-3pm as this is where it is most potent and remember to apply sunscreen every few Joshua Harris hours, with SPF 15-30 (such as Clinique Sun Protection Face and Body Cream SPF 15/30 150ml, £17.50/£17.36) depending on the fairness of your skin. For highly sensitive skin, opt for a sun block with SPF 50 such as Avène Total Sun Block Spray 50ml, £13.50, to minimise skin damage. For babies and children, it may be more appropriate to purchase sunscreen exhibiting greater protection for young, sensitive skin, such as those containing zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (for example, the Clarins Sun Care Cream High Protection For Children UVB 30 125ml, £17). After sun care is just as necessary in order to retain moisture and repair your skin from potential damage. Popular choices of after sun are those containing aloe vera, as this has soothing properties which may calm your skin, such as the Clinique After Sun Rescue with Aloe 150ml, £17.50. Boots, 230 High Road, Loughton, offer a variety of sun-care products to choose from, including these recommendations.

3. Beachwear… Swimming trunks and flip-flops may be redundant locally, but if your holiday destination encompasses a plethora of sandy beaches and cool waters, then you may opt for some casual beachwear purchases. A

personal recommendation is that of Superdry Store, 244 High Road, Loughton, with a ladies range including the flamboyant and retro Logo Boardie, £34.99 and GT2 Flip Flops, £14.99, and a gentleman’s product-range including the Superdry Swim Shorts, £34.99 and GT Flip Flops, £14.99. A key feature of these goods is the multifarious colour-array, affording you with customisation and co-ordination of your desired look. For prescription sunglasses, Scher and Ward Opticians, 278 High Road, Loughton, offer an assortment of brands such as one of the fashion frontrunners, Tom Ford.

4. Technoliday… Possessing the latest gadgets and technology may further enrich your holiday experience. Most Fifties-style costumes come equipped with underwiring and straps - perfect for supporting a fuller bust.

Bikini season is upon us, and as skimpy swimwear is the underwear equivalent of your staple wardrobe while on holiday, it's best to choose with caution.

Feel at your most feminine with the new skirted bottoms - ideal for those with big booty paranoia. Beware: retro high-waisted styles can make your bottom appear bigger but are perfect for concealing lumps and bumps.

ou can try oversized sunglasses and huge floppy hats, but there's really no place to hide on the beach.

Along with sprouting body hair, ill-fitting costumes topped the list of holiday beach crimes, according to a recent survey by Australian swimwear specialist Trixan Body. "For many of us, daring to bare on the beach is an annual event, so it's a great chance to push change in your style," suggests Rob Phillips, creative director of London College of Fashion.

Natty nautical Stripes are your best friend when it comes to boosting barely-there curves. Opt for seaside chic and use slim horizontal stripes to accentuate width where you want it, be it bust, bottom or both.

"e more you experiment and explore your swimwear choices, as with all fashion choices, the better you will wear them.

Ruffles and frills will add serious va-va-voom curves if you're self-conscious about a barely-there chest.

"Swimwear doesn't leave much room to hide, so it's crucial to wear styles that flatter your figure."

A halter-neck triangle top with extra padding will also create cleavage oomph.

e good news is that this summer the shops are full of more tummy-controlling, bust-supporting and confidence-boosting styles than ever before. RETRO REVIVAL Mad Men comes to the beach with this season's retro swimwear shapes. ink kitsch fruity prints, polka dots, gingham and frills to be a pool-side pin-up.

BEST FOR: ROUND TUMMIES Swimwear style tips Fashion guru Rob Phillips has these top tips for effortless swimwear style: ●

Know your body shape, proportion and, especially, fit. Make sure that you try on items before you hit the beach - use underwear sizes as a guide.

Posture is everything. You don't need a Baywatch body to look good poolside! e biggest killer to all fashion is bad posture, lazy shoulders, slouching and dragging feet. Instead, hold your head high, pull shoulders back, tuck that tummy in and walk tall.

Be brave with colour, print and texture. Hold pieces/colours against your skin in daylight and see if the colour works with your skin tone. A bold colour statement on the right skin tone will deflect people from looking at the bits you dislike.

It's all about the detail. All-in-ones with cut-out detailing in specific areas of the body look sexy in a demure, teasing way. Racer backs show off great shoulder lines, high hip cuts show proud thighs and a tie or clasp halter neck with plummeting neckline will draw frontal attention to any chest size.

Support is essential. Remember swimwear needs to hold you in and up. Find out what's good for you, what suits you and which areas you want to flatter. BLACK LOW-PLUNGE SWIMSUIT £12, F&F AT TESCO 0800 505555 WWW.TESCO.COM/CLOTHING

Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR LASERS IN DENTISTRY Lasers have revolutionized hundreds of industries throughout the world, and clinical dentistry is no different. ey have fundamentally changed the way dentists can practise. Dentists who have lasers can offer more procedures, in less time, and with better results than some traditional methods. Does laser treatment hurt? Definitely not. Laser energy is very gentle. It can be used to make changes in soft tissues or even prepare a cavity without local anaesthetic! If we do need to make it numb, then only a fraction of the anaesthetic normally required is indicated. So wherever possible, always opt for comfortable, state-of-the-art laser dentistry. What about after the treatment, is there any discomfort then? Rarely. e reason for that is that lasers are very precise and only remove a few cell layers at a time. ere is no bleeding or swelling after the tissue has been altered. Also, laser energy is bactericidal – this means that any area that is treated is effectively sterilized making healing fast and comfortable.

What are lasers used for in dentistry? A really great use of lasers in cosmetic dentistry is gum line contouring. e laser can be used to create even gum lines by artistically sculpting the gum tissue. is gum lift procedure can be done in a matter of minutes. After the treatment, people who have a “gummy smile” enjoy a great improvement to their image and self-confidence. A special type of laser can also prepare cavities (i.e. do small to medium sized fillings) without the need for drilling or injections. is is perfect for patients who have a phobia of injections or drilling!

J U LY/A U G U S T 2 0 1 1

What else can lasers do? ere are dozens of other uses. Some of the other main indications are: • Fraenectomy (removal of the fibrous fold of tissue just below the lip) • Tongue-tie correction (sometimes a fold of tissue “ties the tongue” down. e laser can remove this quickly and painlessly to improve the mobility and comfort for the tongue) • Gum treatment (more advanced gum disease can be treated by laser therapy) • Root canal treatment (because laser energy kills bacteria, it is perfect for cleaning out infection inside a tooth during root canal treatment) • Ulcers (painful ulcers in the mouth can be removed within a few minutes) • Sensitivity (lasers are proven to help fight sensitivity of teeth which is a common problem) What percentage of dentists use lasers? Very few indeed (I am guessing about 1-2%). It is a real shame that dentists do not make the investment in this amazing technology to help patients have the best available in modern dentistry. At Smile design By Ash, we have two special and totally different lasers to offer the complete range of treatment options using lasers. I am also a laser trainer for two

world-class companies and have trained dentists from all over UK and Europe. Next month, I will be presenting a case study showing how we carry out a “Mini Makeover”. is is a cost effective cosmetic solution for many people. By having a beautiful, natural looking and whiter smile will dramatically increase your confidence and all the benefits this has in personal relationships and other areas of life! If you have any further questions on laser dentistry or how to improve your smile, please email them to me at ash@smiledesignbyash.co.uk. walking with children

A

re you in summer and holiday mode? Even if your planned holidays have been and gone or are due to happen later in the year, allow yourselves to get caught up in the holiday mood and recall the summers of your childhood. As a child walking and playing in the woods near my home was fun and also educational - that's where I learned the names of the wild flowers and the trees and I've never forgotten them. Ladybird books have gone by the wayside but there'll be others to take their place and kids love being set tasks to go and find flowers, leaves, stones, feathers etc. By walking with your children you are setting a good example of doing regular exercise and this can be critical in preventing your child from becoming a lifelong couch potato. So in this edition I will be looking at how we can get our children, friend's children and grandchildren involved in the great outdoors. ey may not respond enthusiastically to 'who's coming for a walk?' but announcing an adventure, exploration or 'treasure hunt' and the result can be very different. At a time when around 27 per cent of children are considered overweight and research suggests that the continual reduction in the amount of exercise children take is the cause, making an effort to get our children outside could be a benefit to us all on many levels. It allows us to get to know our local area, to spend time together as a family, to encourage socialisation and to make that link between fun/enjoyment and exercise. In East London and Essex we are all lucky to have wonderful scenery so use walking as the vehicle to discover parts of your local area you haven't seen before and remember it's cheap and anyone can do it. Children love places with lots to look at and things to climb over and hide behind so take them to the wonderful Epping Forest where information on walks and maps can be found at the Forest Centre in High Beech and where my daughter and I found Eeyore's house or go walk along the beaches and climb the sand dunes, many within an hour's drive. What about Lee Valley Park where you can walk along the canal and spot birds and brightly coloured canal boats. ey also love landmarks and places linked to things that interest them so who has the Olympic site on their doorstep? How about a walking tour of the site? What a great way to introduce our children about what's to come? Details of walks can be found at - http://www.toursof2012sites.com/ When walking with children do be mindful of short legs so keep the pace down and allow them time for exploring and looking at what they may come across. e aim it to get our young people to associate joy with walking and then they are more likely to do more of it. As adults, we need to realise that children don't want to walk for the same reasons we do, scenery is not a tempting goal but flying a kite, exploring a castle, finding a waterfall etc could be. Play 'hide and seek', 'follow my leader' or organise a treasure hunt; give

them a book to write in or stick things into, go on your own 'Bear Hunt', have a 'teddy bears picnic' or if by the sea, a 'Pirate's of the Caribbean' feast. Get creative and see what you can come up with. As a modern parent, embrace modern technology and encourage them to capture their adventure on film, this will appeal to the older ones and going on location, definitely has a more exciting ring to it. Here are some further tips to bear in mind - . ●

Take nice things to eat and drink on the way. Chocolate can provide a good burst of energy so carry a couple of small bars in your backpack. You don't need to eat it all; just a little gives you a boost. Also bananas but get a banana guard s it doesn't end up mushy and dried fruit is also excellent. We all like treats and these can be rewards too. Take plenty of water all drink regularly - even if you do not feel thirsty. You need to keep hydrated. Don't make it too long and hard as even children need to build up their fitness gradually just like adults do. Make sure the route and length of time spent walking is appropriate to their age. Approximately 1km per birthday so a four year old can be expected to walk up to 4km, with plenty of rest breaks. Consult sites such as the Ramblers website http://www.ramblers.org.uk for route suggestions. Be flexible as children can go from having loads of energy one minute to hardly any the next so you may have to change plans at short notice. Set goals such as climbing to the top of a hill, collecting a number of items etc and don't forget to recognise the achievement. Teach your child how to read maps, get them to talk about the route and follow it. Remember the sunscreen and apply regularly as well as cream for insect bites and stings. Remember to protect young children from all weather when carrying or pushing them on long walks. ey need to be protected them from the sun. and other elements so make sure they are appropriately dressed. E.g. you may be feeling warm as you are expending energy but the

&

child is sitting still and can quickly get cold ●

● ●

Give them a small rucksack where and store things they find, it's just more involvement. ey could take photos and make scrap books, montages etc. Joining forces with another family is often a good idea as children walk better in small groups. e children have fun walking together and if appropriate let them take a friend, this may make a big difference to the older ones. Schedule a regular family walk, great for all the family and an opportunity to talk. Walking and talking doesn't require eye contact which often makes things easier for teenagers. Look for the self-guided nature walks, which have been set up in many parks. Younger children enjoy looking for the next numbered post; older ones can learn about the plants and animals of the park, and perhaps take photos or record their experience in other ways.

CANAL WALKING

Consider getting your child a dog and get them involved through caring for it and taking it on regular walks. Encourage your child's interest in nature through books and websites, then plan walks so they can see those plants and animals Start good habits early. Take young babies and toddlers for walks in their pram. As they get older, encourage them to walk part of the way. In the hotter weather try to plan your walk in a way that allows you to stay out of the heat. If possible don't go out during the hottest part of the day and consider shady forest routes rather than wide open spaces. Use a damp cloth or scarf on the back of the neck to keep you cool or carry a cooling water spray.

SPOTTING THE WILDLIFE IN WANSTEAD PARK

PICNIC REWARD

Give your child a pedometer to count their steps. You can make games from this such as guessing how many steps it will be to the large oak tree, top of the hill etc and perhaps they can see if they can beat their step total next walk. Try geocaching - http://www.geocaching.com/

As with adults, you do not need to spend a fortune on walking gear for children. It is important though that their shoes fit comfortably and their clothes aren't too tight, hot or cold and they are protected against sun and rain. Trainers, layers and a waterproof are all that's needed for short walks. Having some over trousers and wellies are useful as these can allow children to get muddy and splash in puddles and it's good to get into the habit of carrying a spare set of clothes. If you are going to be near streams, waterfalls or the beach, you may want to have a towel or even swimwear so children can paddle, splash around, build dams, skim stones etc.

FILM SET IN GREENWICH

Lots of food for thought and ideas for you to develop further and a book recommendation for you. See if your local library has a copy of 'Adventure Walks for Families' by Becky Jones and Clara Lewis, browse it in a bookshop and perhaps add it to your collection. Would love to hear of your experience with your children in terms of getting them out there and if you try any of these tips out over the next couple of months, please tell us of your experience. Enjoy your summer. Heather Waring heather@waringwell.com 020 8220 6919

I remember hearing from my ancient grandmother that the older you get the quicker the time goes. She was the same grandma at whose knee I would sit, night after night during those austere and disciplined days of WWII, listening to her relate the difference between porcelain and pottery, base and precious metals, soda and lead glass and so on in my father’s antique shop while he was away in the army. She actually posted a notice on the shop door saying that business was restricted because “My son has been called to His Majesty’s Colours”. I don’t think my dad saw his situation in such a noble light as he battled with the enemy and rough weather on troop ships in the North Atlantic. Anyway my grandma seemed to make sense with most of what she said so how could time go more quickly? A day is a day after all. But now I have learnt two things; one is that everybody’s grandma said the same and two is that it’s true. I blame it today on the television and radio, advertising future programmes a week ahead. It’s only Tuesday and the weekend looms. But what did previous generations base it on? Whatever, this summer is just whizzing by and a funny old time it’s been so far. Weather, business, world affairs, economies all very mixed. And the antiques trade is no different. But there have been some interesting moments and opportunities. Most recently we had the Olympia Fine Art and Antiques Fair, where I was filming for my new DVD ‘John Bly’s Beginners’ Guide to Collecting Antiques’. e Fair has been running consistently for 38 years and this one in mid-June was as glamorous as any. (If you missed it there is a winter version in November.) e standard of exhibit was high throughout and the organisers showed an innovative blend of ancient and modern. Recently it has become fashionable to mix

John Bly Global Partnership Family Offices. is is a private networking company for private banks – Family Offices. If you are sufficiently wealthy to have your own exclusive banking facility or share one with a few other families you will know that their managers are constantly seeking information on goods and services for the benefit of their clients. John Lidster’s company supplies these contacts and also holds a series of seminars for such people to meet. the two – interestingly just as most people did in the 18th and 19th centuries – and the organisers have done exactly the right thing to go with the flow of market trends. When times are difficult far-sighted people see the alternative, and the current series of Antique Shows at Olympia is not the first example in our trade. Back in 1928, when things were far from easy e Daily Telegraph held an Exhibition of Antiques and Works of Art in that magnificent building. It was a massive affair with 160 Stands, 36 different categories and numerous committees under 38 Vice Presidents. And the Catalogue – shown here – cost Two Shillings and Sixpence or Half a Crown. at’s 30 old pence when beer was 2 pence a pint. While we are talking about money I think I have said in the past that I work as a consultant with a Wealth Manager, Richard Broughton, a member of the St. James’s Place Partnership. A couple of months ago Richard introduced me to Jonathan Lidster whose company is

I am delighted to say that I have been asked to speak at one entitled e Alternative Investment Club in October, although I have always believed that antiques and works of art are the original asset investment, rather than an alternative, being at least of some intrinsic value unlike nutmeg, tulips and other people’s companies. ere is a not too tenuous link from this to Richard’s latest introduction. e company is called Family Business Place whose Manager and Creative Director is Anita Brightley-Hodges. is is a company that brings together family businesses. e house magazine makes fascinating reading for anyone in that situation, for you realise that you are not alone in coping with family life within a working environment. Furthermore, family businesses large and small, and covering a vast spectrum of trade, are brought together with one thing in common with a benefit to all. Family Business Place holds an annual conference called Family Ties where selected representatives from family businesses are invited to speak. As this year’s speakers are described as superb it is with deep embarrassment that I report that I am one of them, also in October, at the Royal College of Surgeons, the day after I talk for Jonathan Lidster.

Now the real reason for my telling you all this is because two most interesting enquiries have just come to my desk, one from Anita Brightley-Hodges. When we met she described an old china pot, a gift from her mother. I imagined a chamber pot of the sort commonly used in the dining rooms of the 18th century. (Rather than leave the warmth and company of a jolly dinner, the calls of nature were attended to behind the big leather screen around one end of the sideboard in which the potty was kept. It had its own little compartment for the sake of hygiene.) However, Anita’s pot was of greater interest. It is a Chinese hard paste ‘blue and white’ porcelain censer and, according to my friend David Battie, it dates from the mid to late 17th century. Vessels for burning incense have been used in China since c.770 BC and in Western religious ceremonies since the 13th century. is is a particularly good and decorative example but not of great value, for although of considerable age in our scale it is not ancient in Chinese terms. Next came something I had not seen before which, considering it is for cooling a glass containing alcohol, is a real surprise. Its proper name is an Ehl-i Keyif. is one is Turkish and is used traditionally for drinking Raki, an anise-flavoured spirit taken as an aperitif. It is not very antique but it is made in the traditional manner of etched tinned copper, a centuries old technique. I learned all this from another good friend Okan Koseoglu who has just opened a most wonderful Turkish restaurant in Tring. Not only is the food superb, he makes a great martini cocktail ‘on the rocks’ or ‘straight up’, which he will now serve for me in my own Ehl-I Keyif. Well, as time is going so quickly like grandma said, we need to enjoy every minute. Serefe. www.sjpp.co.uk/richardbroughton www.familybusinessplace.com

AUDI A4 LEADS THE PACK No market segment is as hotly contested as the Premium Executive sector – the sector where the Audi A4 has since 2008 been the undisputed king. Although models bearing the A4 brand have been with us since 1994, it was in Spring 2008 when the current model first wore the crown and the A4 has reigned supreme ever since. anks to a combination of leading edge technology and a new chassis with longest in-class wheelbase, the A4 offers enormous driver appeal and a particularly spacious

cabin space among its long list of advantages. And with a range that offers a choice of five body styles, eight engine variants and literally hundreds of specification options, there really is a model to suit every taste. Drivers can chose from the Saloon, Avant and allroad, plus S4 Saloon and S4 Avant, which means there are A4s suitable for on-road, off-road and even on-track. e choice of engines is no less remarkable. Petrol engines

in 1.8, 2.0 and 3.2 litre variants offer silky smooth power and the 2.0, 2.7 and 3.0 litre TDI options offer up to 61.4 mpg and performance that is equally impressive. At the top of the range the Audi S4 quattro is powered by a muscular V6 3.0 litre supercharged petrol unit that delivers 0-62 mph in just 5.2 seconds and a peak torque of 440 NM for instant throttle response in any gear. Essex Audi has always championed the A4 as a drivers car first and

consequently runs the largest fleet of A4 demonstrators in the country because, as Group Director of Marketing Claire Carey commented: “Once a prospective customer test drives the Audi A4 of their choice, they nearly always go on to buy one – which says an awful lot about the sheer quality of this car.” And what does Claire drive herself – an Audi A4 Avant… To find out more about any model in the A4 range or to book a test drive, please contact your nearest Essex Audi Centre.
