ere is something fascinating and endearing about old-fashioned travel. Whether ignited by the romanticism of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express, 4.50 From Paddington, or those infamous furtive glances in ‘Brief Encounter’. As a steam train blusters into the station, some grit falls into a woman's eye. is leads to a passionate encounter with a handsome stranger. (To understand the last sentence please see the film, Brief Encounter!) Father’s Day celebrates and honours fathers and is normally the third Sunday of June. is year, the date is Sunday 17th June. As you’re reading this article, you are probably anxiously wondering what to buy as a present or the best places to celebrate the occasion. Making these decisions needn’t be difficult and there are some really great places in Essex. If you are thinking of going out for a Sunday lunch, perhaps the King William IV pub in Chigwell? e pub is conveniently located near the station and the main parade of shops. In Wanstead High Street - e George pub on the corner, which also has a lively atmosphere. Stephen hosts ‘e Wine Factor’ in Station Road, Chingford, an independent wine shop. He has wine running through his veins having been in the business all his working life. It’s a family affair at the shop with wife Ayşegül and Mum and Dad running the shop while Stephen sources wines from around the globe. e Wine Factor celebrated its second birthday last month To compliment June celebrations, and hopefully warm weather, Stephen has selected two English wines of distinction.

nspired by a brave and tenacious little boy, who battles a gruesome fight to beat lymphoblastic leukaemia, the shop owners in Crown Street, Brentwood, held a fund-raising event to support Robert and also the charity, Children with Cancer* on ursday, May 24th. Speaking to the event organiser, Jeanette Cassar, owner of Mesh in Crown Street about the motive behind the event, she was clearly a woman driven by compassion and concern for Robert’s family. Rather than take the credit herself, she stated: “Everybody’s contributed.” And the aim? “If possible, we’d love to raise £5k.” Raising money was a collective event – a catwalk fashion show, opportunity to purchase clothes and accessories, auction and raffle. Donations for the raffle were generous and exciting: a free 1 month gym membership at Fitness First; a flower arrangement by Rooms for Bloom; a 3 course meal for 2 on any Sunday at De Rougemont Manor. Auction prizes included contributors from e Sugar Hut for a VIP table, FREE entry for 6 people, hostess service and magnum of Belvedere vodka. is prize alone was worth £750! Other donations for the auction were from Inula, Smith’s Brasserie, Shapez and Marygreen Manor Hotel, plus many others. Despite the evening being particularly warm and sultry, hundreds of locals eagerly gathered at the event. Positive and clearly in the mood to donate and be generous, enjoy themselves and to turn an important event into an atmosphere of fun and revelry; De Rougemont Manor in Warley Road, Brentwood, was absolutely packed. An atmosphere of camaraderie and purpose, as the crowds gathered into the crowded suite, as the talented and exuberant group, Re-Public, sang popular songs which

Running slightly later than planned as so many people were still arriving, the fashion show commenced. Although the models were ‘friends and family’ they were as professional as highly trained models. e clothes which would later be available to be sold (with 10% of all proceeds being donated to Children With Cancer), with focus and clear vision, they were able to quickly change clothes, then appear fresh and radiant as they walked up the catwalk, looked to their left – to their right, a return to the changing area but one last twirl before their descent down the stairs. However the event was not without humour. Obviously the models were all good-looking, with perfectly shaped and toned bodies, tanned, immaculate hair styles and impeccable make-up. Seemingly quite nervous at first, they overcome their personal anxieties as the crowd cheering them on, with as much accolade as if they were Naomi Campbell or David Beckham! So as they relaxed, some personalities begun to shine through. Popular songs to accompany the catwalk staging, then as one particularly attractive young man ‘strutted his stuff ’ – paused just long enough as the popular song ‘I’m Sexy and I know it’ – belted out from the sound system. A pause, a cheeky smile – and then those key words as he majestically owned the catwalk. Extending his arms, a sexy and cheeky grin as everybody laughed and cheered him on. Yes, he was ‘sexy and he knew it’ – and so did everybody else too! A successful event - A great evening which was enjoyed by all. More importantly, crucial donations raised by tickets, raffles and the auction, to support a worthwhile cause…

added to an ambiance of party fun. Popular disco songs from the 1980s or more current latest hits: whether Lionel Richie’s All Night Long or

Maroon 5’s – Moves Like Jagger, their talent and ability to change from one decade to another, certainly engaged the varying age groups of attendees.

here is something fascinating and endearing about old-fashioned travel. As a steam train blusters into the station, some grit falls into a woman's eye. is leads to a passionate encounter with a handsome stranger. (To understand the last sentence - please see the film, Brief Encounter!) Steam trains, their whistles, the carriages, the steam bellowing out of the chimneys, visions of 1930s Poirot or Miss Marple; trains going across America as part of the Wild West, with imagination and an understanding of history and literature, enhances the fantasy and desire for this unique form of travel, which seems to hold so many more possibilities, than simply taking the plane or any other form of transport. Alternatively, a day out on a steam or diesel engine locomotive is exciting, fun, especially as we venture into the summer and the promise of days filled with sunshine and opportunities for outdoor recreation and family activity. Well all this excitement is just around the corner to this magazine’s readership. Due to the efforts of over 100 volunteers aged from 18-82, who have given in excess of four years, to bring back to life, the Epping-Ongar Railway. “e volunteers have worked tirelessly to restore the tracks, signals, stations, locomotives and rolling stock to their former glory.” Simon Hanney – General Manager Epping-Ongar railway

e railway offers three heritage transport experiences; from Ongar to North Weald by steam engine; North Weald and into/through to Epping Forest by diesel engine and a 1940s heritage bus. e RTs and Routemasters offer a fast and frequent service every half-an-hour, from just outside Epping underground. Imagine, going back in time, in the style of our forefathers, to experiences these three different transport journeys? e tickets are flexible, so people can shape the day as they require. Some may want to shop in Epping or Ongar’s historic high street with its exciting selection of little interest shops; another train, or bus, so passengers can go for a walk, then take a train in another direction. Romantic fun for couples, or a great outing for all the family. Bring a picnic, check the weather for sunshine and most importantly enjoy! I plan to experience the trains, so if you see me – please say ‘hello’. Standard tickets are £13 for adults. £7 for children / £11 for senior citizens / 2 Adults +3 children is £34. Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY.....THAT IS THE QUESTION Well, another month begins and it only seems like yesterday that we were all writing our Christmas Card List. I just cant believe we are now half way through the year and still waiting for the local property market to return to the heady days of 2007. e way things are developing in Europe, I believe it could only be a cockeyed optimistic who will be prepared to forecast any change in the local residential market until this century is out of its teens. When trying to answer the question of my sub-heading, I would say that it all depends on the questioners specific position and aspirations. For example,my advice to young singles, or those without a young family, is to rent and not to buy. Present rental returns on capital values in our area show very little more than 3% to 4% and the higher the capital value, the greater the reduction in the return on capital. When one looks at property at the very high end that have been let recently, these show little more than 2% after outgoings. At the very bottom of the market, however, things are a little brighter for the investor, with many small apartments and houses producing between 5% and 6% and it is in this area that I would recommend purchasing, rather than renting. Now turning to those with families, purchase seems the only way forward under the present legislation of Landlord & Tenant, due to the fact that there is minimal security of

are generally considered by us to be prime selling time preceding the period when the world and his wife leave these shores for sunnier climes. It is also the period of the football transfer window which closes at the end of August. Hopefully, we would expect an increase in quality homes to enter the market for both sale and rental, hoping to attract new players to both Spurs and West Ham, which I am sure you will be aware, continually seek our advice in finding fine homes for their new signings. Do call us to register your requirements and ask to be put on our high priority list if your search for a property to buy or rent is urgent and needless to say, we would be only too happy to advise those of you who are thinking of selling, without charge or obligation. Have a great summer, I have it on good authority that it will definitely start soon!!

Needless to say, the disruption caused to family lifestyle is immeasurable. With this in mind, buying must be Plan "A" for all families. Following my rant in last month's column regarding people who pick the brains of the most experienced agents without cost and follow this by instructing one of the new boys on the block to sell their home, because their valuations were ridiculously higher and their fees were far lower, several instances over the past week have restored my faith in human nature with owners now far more willing to accept

Alternatively, a special dinner with family? Sheesh in Chigwell is tastefully decorated and has some delicious kebabs. Other potential restaurants could be Pizza Express in South Woodford and Prezzo in Buckhurst Hill, for a taste of delicious and authentic Italian cuisine. For those of you that want to enjoy the sunshine (or lack of it!) there are some great parks, where you can sit back and admire the landscape - the scenic Epping Forest or Wanstead Park; both have a large children’s area for all the family to enjoy. Enjoy a picnic or a chilled cocktail whilst enjoying the countryside and the weather! ese are some ideas if you are not sure what gifts to buy and where to shop. Just consider what your father likes or enjoys and buy accordingly. A treat of an expensive meal (cooking the meal yourself is optional!) and fine wine from Waitrose supermarket

located in South Woodford and Buckhurst Hill. If your father likes reading there is a WH Smith and e Book Shop in Loughton. e Stieg Larsson books are a great read and for mature parents (or grandparents) there are the classics. For the readers that have parents who are interested in art and have a passion of painting: e Art Shop in Loughton has a great selection of notebooks, pencils and paints to choose from. If you are unsure what card to buy and want to get your father a humorous or original card, then make a journey to Clinton Cards in Loughton High Road and Epping High Street. Clintons are a favourite national chain and you are bound to find a card that you like! Alternatively, an incredible selection of free e-greetings cards – some even have tunes or songs. For readers looking to indulge their father, it’s never too late to be creative and by taking time to wander around the many local areas, exploring new horizons, new different high roads, whilst contemplating that special gift, for an important parent or grandparent. You are bound to find places that you have not seen before and I am sure, you will come up with some new and different ideas.

Happy Father’s Day…

onsidering the best education for our children, is certainly, one of the highest priorities in parents’ agendas. Living in Essex and especially in our core areas, affords our children access to some of the best schools in the country and most certainly, a privileged private/public school education. Although it is still only June, schools break up next month and for most parents, where their children attend in September, is a decision that was made many months, if not years before. Entrance examinations, analysis and research of all schools relevant to a particular child’s needs and educational potential, are carefully explored by caring parents and also with the assistance of teachers.

s the midway point of the packed Summer Term approaches, the Oak-Tree Group of Schools is starting to look forward to the new academic year in September 2012 and the many new children who are preparing to join the schools for the first time.

Epping’s Coopersale Hall School is full in many areas and operates a system of waiting lists to ensure fairness when admitting new children. e purpose built four-classroom block opened in September 2011 has enabled the school to keep up with heavy demand for nursery and kindergarten places requested by many families from Epping and the surrounding areas. Families with older children keen to access the outstanding success rate in helping Year 6 children into their first choice senior schools at 11+ have been particularly interested recently. Normanhurst School in North Chingford has benefitted from a surge in demand from parents not only in its immediate area but also from Woodford, Chigwell, Buckhurst Hill and Loughton. With many year groups full, its families clearly realise the importance of choosing the right school for their children and are delighted by extensive broad education and excellent exam preparation for GCSEs.

Normanhurst, Oaklands and Coopersale Hall Schools

Oaklands School in Loughton is celebrating its 75 years of providing a first rate education to pupils with a summer party on 1 July 2012. With long waiting lists in operation for the next two school years, prospective parents are being advised to register quickly. So why are the Oak-Tree Schools in demand? Probably for many reasons; It is the philosophy that each child is treated as an individual and welcomed into the friendly, family atmosphere so evident at all three schools. Alongside the extensive before and after school care available to families, a host of exciting extra-curricular activities are available to complement the educational curricula. Private schooling remains a popular choice for parents keen to ensure their children have the best possible start in life, with small class sizes, strong academic standards and a calm, nurturing atmosphere. Just when state schools budget cuts are biting, the Oak-Tree Schools are enhancing their specialist provisions and adding to the already excellent teacher-pupil ratios. Children’s education is of paramount importance, and with so few chances to get it right the Oak-Tree Group is the market leader demonstrating a clear record of excellence and quality that instils confidence in its families ■

CELEBRATIONS AND JUBILATIONS Words: Michelle Harris

T

he month of June has certainly had a magnificent start. e Queen’s Diamond Jubilee has been celebrated with great pomp and style which has mesmerised the world with its splendour and dignity. When it comes to a great show – no other nation can beat the Brits! As for e Queen herself, she looked magnificent. e only regret was that Prince Philip was not by her side Monday evening. e fantastic 1000 boat flotilla in the ames Pageant, the Diamond Jubilee Concert celebrating 60 years of music and closer to home, all the local street party celebrations; houses proudly displaying the

26

JUNE2012

Union Jack, bunting swaying in the rain on Sunday but bright and breezy on a sunny Monday. Neighbourly good cheer and a terrific four day Bank Holiday weekend. With so much to make us all feel proud, the Diamond Jubilee was celebrated around the world, as beacons were lit, the national anthem sung with pride and a wonderful feeling of closeness as everybody joined in, this national party that is part of our culture and heritage. Closer to home, Debden near Loughton, pearly kings and queens celebrated with families in a wonderful atmosphere of camaraderie and party spirit. Stalls were set up, musical accompaniment and fairground rides. Street

parties and neighbours inviting locals into their homes for a drink e Queen’s good health and other parties too. Certainly from my home and especially after the Jubilee Concert, many gardens were alight with fireworks coinciding with the party just outside of Buckingham Palace. Another cause for celebration this month is Father’s Day on June 17th. With a feature in this magazine, dedicated to the pursuit of the perfect gift, we are spoilt for choice, from the great high streets in Wanstead, Loughton, Epping, South Woodford, Brentwood and Chigwell. All the outstanding restaurants, pubs for a celebratory lunch, tea or dinner, or even the local M&S or Waitrose, if choosing to make a special meal at home. Another local story, which certainly caught my attention and is worth noting in this column, is the story of a husband and wife, living in Loughton, talking on SKYPE. e wife popped out to see her son but whilst the husband was still live on the internet, some burglars broke into the property. He saw them in his home, told them to leave and called the police. A family hero, even though he was in Turkey at the time! is story was certainly an eye-opener as

to how we can protect our family and property, via a different medium other than the conventional alarm or a caring neighbourhood scheme. Especially now and in the summer, as we leave windows open and sometimes pop out to the local shops, letterbox or even to hang up washing in the garden, it is worth being vigilant and cautious wherever possible. Another tip is to ensure that bushes near the front doors are cut back, so nobody can hide if making a bogus call. However sunshine and warm days are always welcome so let us all enjoy. June has certainly been exciting so far – hopefully we will all enjoy more celebrations and jubilations! To all the fathers and grandfathers reading this magazine – wishing you ALL - a wonderful Father’s Day.

tephen hosts ‘e Wine Factor’ in Station Road, Chingford, an independent wine shop. He has wine running through his veins having been in the business all his working life. It’s a family affair at the shop with wife Ayşegül and Mum and Dad running the shop while Stephen sources wines from around the globe. e Wine Factor celebrated its second birthday last month. To compliment June celebrations, and hopefully warm weather, Stephen has selected two English wines of distinction.

and viscous quality stand up to almost anything that is thrown at it. Loves Tarragon chicken. As it is textural it also shows lots of fruit that makes it suitable on its own. BODEGA CASTANO MONASTRELL ROSADO 2011- £8.49 I have recently tasted this with the winemaker (unfortunately in the shop and not in-situ) but this Spanish rosé was surprisingly good. Yelca in South- Eastern Spain has a very warm climate which means the Monastrell grape thrives here. e grapes are only picked when they are ripe which heightens the potential alcohol level but clever blending with local grape varietals (about 10%) allay any fears that this will happen. Amazingly vivid in colour the aroma of fresh strawberries jumps out of the glass with the subtlest hint of liquorice. Fresh red berries on the palate and a medium finish make this the perfect wine for hot weather and drinking with friends. Get rid of your preconceptions of rosés. e newly designed labels are based on the old bull fighting signs that were popular in this part of Spain. at should put you in the party mood – see you next month for some more top tipples! CHAPEL DOWN PINOT BLANC 2010- £14.49 e grapes for this wine are grown in Hampshire and Kent and cleverly blended. You find the typical pear notes of this variety, whilst the underlying citrus and greengage characters bring this wine to life. A little bit of smokiness and honey suckle on the finish will develop with bottle age, but hey it’s a celebration so drink now while it’s young. NYETIMBER CLASSIC CUVEE 2006- £29.99 For those with slightly deeper pockets this Britayne (English champagne pronounced Brit-an-ye) is amazing. It is produced in West Sussex from the traditional grape varietals of Champagne that is Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Munier. e palate has a sweet fruity start that tingle from the very small bubbles. ey only release this vintage in good years and the toasted almonds and peach on the finish are synonymous with this. Britagne is one of the suggested names for English sparkling wine but Merret has also been mooted. is is in recognition of Dr Christopher Merret, who in the 17th Century was the first to deliberately add sugar to wine and create champagne as we know it today. Yes even before the French did it. Winner of about 60 awards since it’s inception 20 years ago Nyetimber has enjoyed success throughout the years and has beaten the French as best sparkling against champagne. oyal Ascot is one of the pinnacle events of the summer social season and the racecourse will be playing its part, in this historic year, in celebration of Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The Royal Meeting will certainly be one of the mustattend events of the year to enjoy all of the pageantry and history of a quintessentially British day out. The quality of the racing at Royal Ascot is simply outstanding, with nearly £4 million in prize money on offer and a total of eighteen ‘Group’ races (racing’s term for the most prestigious races) over the five days. The celebrations will commence at 2pm each day as Her Majesty The Queen arrives in her horse drawn landaus, with superb racing action from 2.30pm onwards, including seven Group One races over the five days. After racing, traditional singing around the Bandstand commences in Grandstand Admission at approximately 6pm.. Silver Ring customers can help celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee too, by joining in with the 1950s style ‘Street Party’ with everything from brass bands to bunting.

TUESDAY 19TH JUNE

The opening day of what is sure to be a spectacular Royal Meeting gets off to a flying start with three Group 1 races (i.e. the very best in the world); the Queen Anne Stakes, the King’s Stand Stakes - the first British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge - and the St James’s Palace Stakes. As the first day of Royal Ascot, the fashion stakes are high but the atmosphere is relaxed which allows racegoers the chance to enjoy a glass of Champagne between races or explore the racecourse at their leisure. Royal Ascot experience at a slightly more gentle pace.

The highlight of the second day is the Group 1 Prince of Wales’s Stakes, arguably the most important race at the Royal Meeting in the modern era with £400,000 prize money on offer. Also on the card are the Group 2 Windsor Forest Stakes, for older female milers and the Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes, for the best up and coming two year old fillies (females). Thursday’s highlight is the Group 1 Gold Cup, a battle of stamina and determination over two miles and four furlongs - this undisputed long distance world championship is not for the faint hearted! Style, elegance and the height of the summer social calendar all combine on Gold Cup Day, colloquially known as ‘Ladies’ Day. Although the whole week of Royal Ascot is a fashion show like no other, it is Thursday when the designer creations and millinery masterpieces reach new heights. To commemorate 300 years of racing, the Hampton Court Stakes has been renamed the Tercentenary Stakes. FRIDAY 22ND JUNE

The feature race on Friday is the Coronation Stakes, which traditionally brings together the leading threeyear-old fillies in Europe. Also on the card is the King Edward VII Stakes, colloquially called

The final day of the Royal Meeting always provides a dramatic climax and features one of the world’s most important and international races, the Golden Jubilee Stakes, renamed as the Diamond Jubilee Stakes in 2012 to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s important milestone. The race is also the second British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge. Saturday is a relatively new addition to the Royal Meeting, having been introduced as recently as 2002. Although the fashions are as elaborate as they are during the week, there is a pronounced, relaxed family feel as many people who are unable to attend until the weekend come to enjoy the experience of the greatest race meeting in the world. Royal Ascot is without doubt the greatest race meeting in the world and a celebration of everything that is uniquely British.

INTERNATIONAL ORCHESTRAS, ANIMATED ARTISTS AND AN ICONIC BARENBOIM BEETHOVEN 13TH JULY – 8TH SEPTEMBER 2012

T

he 2012 BBC Proms has revealed details of the broad-ranging programme of events planned for its 118th season. Opening at the Royal Albert Hall on 13th July 2012, the festival promises two months of the world’s greatest artists, composers, orchestras and ensembles across 92 concerts, including four Last Night celebrations around the UK. With the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics, this summer promises to be unlike any other, and as such, the Proms is delighted to be part of the London 2012 Festival. roughout the season there is music to reflect these major events, and on the opening night of the Proms, four British conductors take to the Royal Albert Hall stage to ‘pass the baton’: Martyn Brabbins, Sir Mark Elder, Edward Gardner and Sir Roger Norrington. Daniel Barenboim and his celebrated West-Eastern Divan Orchestra make Proms history by performing all nine Beethoven symphonies - the first time the entire cycle has featured at the Proms in over 60 years - whilst also becoming the Proms’ first ever non-BBC orchestra-in-residence. English National Opera and the Royal Opera House both perform complete operas in the same season for the first time; the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra becomes the first Brazilian orchestra to appear at the festival and in an exciting collaboration with Aardman Animations, the much-loved Wallace & Gromit characters are transported to the Royal Albert Hall stage for the world premiere of Wallace’s new work, a BBC commission! e season celebrates some of the world’s most eminent living composers including Pierre Boulez. British composers celebrating significant birthdays include Oliver Knussen and Simon Bainbridge at 60, and Hugh Wood and Alexander Goehr at 80. ere are also 150th birthday tributes to Debussy and Delius. As ever the Proms remains firmly committed to new music, with 17 BBC commissions - a further five world premieres and 14 other UK and London premieres, including versions of music by Mendelssohn and Gabrieli, previously unheard in the UK. On

36

JUNE2012

top of this are 10 short BBC commissions which make up the Music Walk around South Kensington, part of the centenary celebrations of John Cage. Youth is a major focus of the festival. From 4th – 6th August four youth orchestras from around the UK, as well as the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and Wales, perform at the Proms. Other UK and international youth ensembles include the Juilliard Orchestra and the Aldeburgh World Orchestra, created to bring together the best young performers from around the globe. e BBC Proms Youth Choir gives its inaugural performance, part of an on-going four-year project. In addition to the six BBC performing groups who once again provide the backbone to the season, there is a stellar line up of international orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker with Sir Simon Rattle and the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with Bernard Haitink, who for the first time give two performances each in one season. e Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under Riccardo Chailly also gives two concerts. In the spirit of the Proms enduring mission to make the best classical music available to everyone, every Prom is broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 with many televised on BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Four. For the seventh year in a row, Promming tickets remain just £5 and for the first time this season, seats are half-price for under-18s. Roger Wright, Director BBC Proms and Controller BBC Radio 3, says: "From Daniel Barenboim to Wallace & Gromit, we once again look forward to welcoming the world’s greatest artists to a festival where there is something for everyone to enjoy. Promming tickets remain just £5 and there are plenty of ways for people to enjoy the events in person, on radio, television and online. e BBC’s on-going commitment in running the festival allows the Proms to be one of the best value-for-money experiences anywhere." run by Amika London, offering an eclectic mix of international opera, jazz and swing sounds. e tempo increases throughout the evening as organisers encourage the guests to party the night away. After the prize giving on Saturday evening, ‘Beach Party the Polo’ will kick off, infusing the chic surroundings with a festival atmosphere as live bands will perform, followed by the beats of international House DJ Colin ‘StarRocker’ Pereira. e competition is being sponsored by a range of companies, including Asahi, Sunseeker, Pommery Champagne and Amika London, and even us here at Fish Media Group with our Sandbanks Life group of magazines; who are set to sponsor the Scottish boys. Captain of Scotland, Jamie le Hardy said of the event: “It’s a very social weekend and it’s a lot of fun – there’s a real buzz! It’s a great spectacle. You’re right next to the action so it’s a great way of showing polo to the public.” Jamie Le Hardy is widely considered to be one of the best British players the game has seen over the last decade and has been decorated with a host of prestigious awards. Born in Dorset, into an Army family, whose parents travelled extensively throughout Jamie’s early years, his first recollection of polo was watching his father play in Hong Kong. On returning to the UK, Jamie became involved in pony club polo where his passion for the sport started to flourish and his talent clearly showed. He began his career fresh out of school; within three years he had won ‘Young Player of the Year’ award and the British Open Gold Cup: “ose two events really launched my career and since then I’ve been one of the highest rated players in England... I’m half Scottish, half English; my Mum’s Scottish. I played for England a lot in my career and now I’ve taken up the Scottish mantel and am captaining the team.” His other accolades include numerous ‘Most Valuable Player’ awards; he was the first England captain to beat Argentina since World War II and he has won the Golden Jubilee Trophy with Prince Harry. As well as being a world-class talent on the pitch, le Hardy is also a professional A Grade Umpire, and an HPA qualified coach; he owns and runs the le Hardy Polo Academy (based in Surrey) which caters for all ages and abilities:

“I spend quite a bit of time coaching, developing horses and putting a bit back into the sport... If you want to get into polo, have a look at our website and speak to me.” www.lehardypolo.com World renowned English polo-player Jack Kidd is also one of the fantastic sportsman playing during the tournament. Among his numerous achievements which include tournament victories around the world, Kidd has achieved two European gold medals in the Federation of International Polo Championships on grass and an Arena Gold Cup win in 2006. In addition to his success as an outdoor player on grass, Kidd is also perhaps one of the best known players on the Snowpolo circuit; claiming victory at numerous tournaments, perhaps most notably Cartier in St Morita. He is also a pivotal promoter in the recent launch of the Berenberg Snowpolo tournament in January. Influenced by his father who show-jumped for Great Britain at the Olympics and played polo for England, Kidd’s love of the game began at the tender age of 14, “By the time I was 17 I was a professional and twenty years later I’m still a pro”, he said. A truly passionate player, Kidd said of the game: “It’s completely addictive; the most amazing sport you could ever play; to gallop on horses and score goals... its a great, great sport!” I spoke to Kidd, who having spent the last five consecutive days on the pitch, was cooling down and getting some well earned respite. For a man who plays polo consistently throughout the year, his praise of the British Beach Polo Championships was illustrative of the fabulous weekend spectators can expect, “It’s one of the best weekends of the English polo season. I look forward to it immensely and I look forward to playing against all the other countries” Spectators can expect some exciting games, watching these world-class talents stretched to their best, as the sand surface does for a fast paced and technically demanding game: “Sand is probably the most difficult surface to play on out of them all; snow or grass. You have to be very skilled with the horse and very good at hitting the ball in the air.” When I asked him what visitors to the championships can expect, Kidd simply said, “Big parties and big polo matches. It should be a stonker!” Visit www.sandpolo.com for more information on how to book ■ JUNE2012 39

FASHION b eAuty

Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR at the following www.nucalm.com/for-patients/ what-is-nucalm.cfm

FEELING CONFIDENT GOING TO THE DENTIST is month, I will focus on overcoming the fear of going to the dentist. About 50% of the population do not go to a dentist regularly. Of these, many people have had a bad experience at some point in their life (often as a child), which puts them off going to a dentist. Over the years, teeth start to break and decay, gum disease progresses and sooner or later, the individual is caught out by a real and painful dental emergency. Treatment is then often more extensive and potentially expensive. COMMON CONCERNS PATIENTS HAVE e common concerns that people have include the noise of the drill, injections, and pain during treatment. Some people also find that the dentist may not communicate really well, or spend enough time explaining things clearly. e fees for dental treatment can also be a concern to some, but flexible finance plans with 0% interest over an extended period of up to 2 years are available. FEAR OF DENTAL DRILLING We offer the use of high quality wireless digital headphones using which you can listen to music of your choice. is will take away most of the “dental noise”. Also, using a laser can mean you can now have small to medium sized fillings without the need for any injections or drilling! PAINLESS DENTISTRY

42

JUNE2012

e first important thing is that the dentist should use a powerful topical anesthetic for a few minutes to make the gum feel numb. en, by using warm anesthetic solution, and introducing this in to the gum slowly will result in a very comfortable experience every time. You should almost never feel pain during any treatment including procedures like root canal treatment or even implant placement. It is really down to the skill of the individual dentist to choose from about 4 different strengths of anesthetic and ensure the area being treated is 100% numb. A caring dental practice will ensure the use of aromatherapy candles that are easily available to ensure a very relaxing, calming and pleasant aroma when you walk in to the practice. I have found that a calming atmosphere, as well as a gentle approach from the dentist is the best solution initially for nervous clients.

FEELING YOU CANT SWALLOW AND BE IN CONTROL For many procedures we can use something called rubber dam. is involves placing a clamp on the tooth to be worked on and isolating this tooth with a sheet of rubber. is means that NOTHING will go in your mouth, giving you added comfort and safety. I also personally give my patient a hand held buzzer so that they can stop me at any time; this allows the patient to confidently feel in control. People find this very reassuring.

In summary, many people have had a bad experience as a child. Either the treatment was painful, or the dentist was not very empathetic. ese concerns live with people many years later. It is important to understand that dentistry has moved on tremendously and there is so much we can do as a profession to help people. You will either require “need” dentistry i.e. things that need to be done (such as fillings for dealing with decay), or “want” dentistry i.e. things that people want to improve their smile or lifestyle (e.g. implants to replace missing teeth). e first step is always to book a FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION to meet the dentist and the Team to ensure you have selected the right Practice for you and your family. Also, to discover how to actually have an enjoyable dental experience, visit www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk or telephone 020 85000544.

SEDATION AND FEELING AT EASE Smile Design By Ash offers relaxation sedation techniques (oral sedation or intravenous sedation) where you will be conscious and “semi-asleep”. Hypnosis is also an effective way to help many people accept dental treatment. We also offer Nucalm, a revolutionary set of products that will get you 7 BESPOKE OFFERS FOR ALL LIFE MAGAZINE READERS - VISIT totally relaxed – have a look

JOIN THE BIGGEST FIGHT AGAINST CANCER THIS SUMMER WITH

RACE FOR LIFE 2012

C

ANCER Research UK is urging women and girls from across the UK to gather friends and family and join the biggest fight against cancer by taking part in Race for Life 2012. Everyone can help beat over 200 types of cancer and help more men and women to survive this awful disease that affects more than one in three people in the UK. Whatever age or fitness level, women can walk, jog or run 5k at over 235 Race for Life events across the UK. For those looking for a bit more of a challenge, there is also a 10k route available at 25 venues.

Women get involved for many different reasons. Some are cancer survivors, while others want to celebrate or remember the lives of family, friends or loved ones. Others simply want to come together, have a great day and raise money. Family and friends play an important part in Race for Life - many volunteer at events, help with fundraising or simply cheer on their loved ones on the day. Since it began in 1994, an incredible six million participants have taken part in Race for Life raising a massive £457 million to fund Cancer Research UK’s vital work. In 2012, Cancer Research UK hopes to raise £55 million. Cancer survival rates have doubled in the past 40 years and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of this progress. But there’s still much to be done and the money raised through Race for Life, will help save even more lives. You can join in at the following venues taking place locally to youEPPING 11TH JULY

CANCER SURVIVAL RATES HAVE DOUBLED IN THE PAST 40 YEARS AND CANCER RESEARCH UK’S WORK HAS BEEN AT THE HEART OF THIS PROGRESS. Emma Gilbert, head of Race for Life, said: “Every two minutes someone in the UK is told they have cancer. It touches so many lives and the back signs worn by everyone taking part are a moving reminder that women are taking part to celebrate lives that have been saved, but also sadly lives that have been lost. We are asking women to unite, take part in the biggest fight against cancer, and raise money for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work into all types of cancers, because it is ‘all of us v cancer’ and together we can help more people survive.” 44

THE PERFECT

Body Sculpture

INTERVIEW WITH SHARON ELLIOTT HARMONY, HEALTH & BEAUTY WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

A

s the summer approaches and skimpy clothes and bikinis are brought to the front of our wardrobes – how do we feel about our bodies? Could we look better and should we look better? And what can we done to help our shapes, when diet and exercise is simply, just not enough…

MH: I have heard that Lipomassage™ is revolutionary for sculpting the body. Please explain why it’s so good? SE: I have been in the beauty industry for many years and I was personally amazed with the results. e treatments sculpt and firm the body and especially, address the problem areas. It sets a new and exciting standard in beauty face and body sculpting.

46

JUNE2012

MH: What are the benefits of coming here to Virgin Active to have treatments? SE: People know the gym and sometimes include a treatment with a work-out. So if you’re here, you can get warmed up, then have a comfortable relaxing treatment. It’s lovely, so warm and gentle, like a soft massage. People know and trust us, we’ve been here years. MH: Tell me about the machine? It looks very 21st century and ultra-modern. What’s the process? SE: ere are three important steps: Step 1 – An assessment, understanding the clients’ objectives, analysis of the fatty areas (lipo-isolation), then based upon the results, our trained staff can assist the client to select the most appropriate treatment.

Harmony__ 11/06/2012 11:16 Page 2

&

FASHION BEAUTY

Step 2 – e treatment. Clients wear the Endermowear (which can be purchased from the salon) then settle down, relax and some even go to sleep! Step 3 – Monitoring the results. MH: What are the results? And what needs to be done to maintain? SE: ey’re FANTASTIC. I’ve never seen anything work as effectively and with such incredible results. Cellular stimulation firms skin, resculptures the figure and can tackle those problem areas which are difficult to address; it smoothes cellulite and also slims down fat cells. Maintenance is a monthly treatment to keep up the great results. MH: Do you have to be specifically trained to use the machine. SE: Oh yes! Our girls are specialists and some have attended many beauty courses. For this process, they have the necessary beauty qualifications and experience, then the manufacturer, offers a diploma course for correct application to maximise the results. e treatments are totally non-invasive and holistic. Also the gels used as part of the treatment are all natural collagen products. MH: What are the different Lipomassage™ treatments? SE: e Android Lipmassage™ treatment tackles the stomach, back and arms. Gynoid Lipomassage™ address the hips, buttocks and legs; Lipomassage™ total care is more of a slimming down process. It targets areas which are normally more resistant such as upper and lower body. In addition it smoothes cellulite and gives the body a more defined look. ere are other treatments, so it’s best to pop down to the salon and read the literature, have a look and an assessment, then see for yourself… MH: Who else uses this machine and technology? SE: It’s highly respected within the medical industry, as it promotes the stimulation and regeneration of collagen and elastic production. It is also used for people who have injuries which have resulted in scars and burns. So it’s medically acknowledged too and is therefore more, than just a cosmetic process. MH: What about men? SE: Oh yes, we have men making appointments too. Men have their problem areas and a Lipomassage™ treatment addresses those tricky areas. We have definitely received an increase in men attending the salon – why shouldn’t men care about the shape of their bodies too? If they’re here at the gym, working out and toning, these treatments help to accelerate the process of achieving the ideal shape. So yes, for both men and women… Who doesn’t want to look great?

SO AS YOU PREPARE FOR SUMMER – WHAT BETTER PREPARATION THAN TO HAVE A SCULPTURED, TONED AND FIRM BODY?… To make an appointment, please call Harmony Health & Beauty Telephone: 020 8502 7179 ■

DINA'S WINNING SMILE

DINA BEFORE TREATMENT

ina Fitzgerald lives in Romford and last year celebrated her 50th birthday. All had gone well and everyone had a great time. e pictures would tell the story. Only one picture told a very different story as Dina looked in horror when she saw it pasted on facebook. “I mostly smiled with my mouth closed, partly because my smile didn’t show much of my teeth, so I sort of got used to it. I’d had problems in the past and had crowns in the front which had discoloured but that picture absolutely finished me. Here I was celebrating being 50 and feeling like 80, all because of that picture.” Feeling that if there was anything she could change about herself her teeth were it, Dina set about the task of finding a cosmetic dentist. She went to a local practice where she was told much could be done. “I was horrified when he told me the cost because it was so high and made me feel like a freak. en he offered a lower priced budget option.” e affect on Dina was traumatic. If her self-esteem was already low, it now fell through the floor. “I went home and cried. He dealt with me like a salesman. I felt under so much pressure I had booked an appointment but later cancelled it.” Oddly it didn’t put Dina off getting her teeth fixed so she took to Google. “Lots of dentists came up, but for some reason the Smile Design by Ash website took my interest. I phoned and immediately felt better talking to Petya explaining my situation and my feelings. It almost felt like a counselling session. Petya suggested I send a picture, absolutely no hard sell, and I must say there has been none of that all through my treatment.” e picture told a story to Ash and his staff and after a consultation and full assessment last September, Ash’s treatment plan included

extractions of two upper teeth; work on her gum health; root canal treatment; bridges, crowns and veneers to the upper teeth; and cosmetic contouring/whitening on the lower teeth. “What impressed me most was Ash’s attitude to the treatment. He prides himself on being a dentist first and talked me through a treatment plan that would give priority to correcting my dental problems.” “I was with the right person and in the right hands. e staff are wonderful, I can’t speak highly enough, and I feel I have made friends.” Dina now has a glowing smile which shows her teeth, all as a result of Ash’s unique smile design. By April 2012, Dina was ready for her make over pictures, provided as part of the service. ese pictures are a testimony to how much happier and confident she now feels. Dina’s growing confidence also helped her to start a new business. As a thank you to Ash, she made a pretty and unusual door wreath for the practice, using skills learnt from attending a flower school as a youth. Ash was so impressed that he recommended she make more for all occasions and sell them. e business has taken off and www.wreathsrus.co.uk is born. “I owe so much to Ash and his team. I consider the whole process to be a journey and I have gained so much. It’s not just that I look and smile much better, it’s also the confidence I have gained as a result of it all, the change in me and how I feel about myself.” ese days pictures of Dina make her smile particularly as she remembers her 50th birthday last year. By her own admission, she has come a long way. For more information please call 020 85000544 www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk ■

THE NEW BMW 6 SERIES GRAN COUPE AT COOPER CHELMSFORD. ECLIPSING THE COMPETITION. Like a rare solar eclipse, every now and then we see something so spectacular we gaze at it in wonder. When the new BMW 6 Series Gran Coupé - the first ever four-door BMW coupé - launches in the UK on 2 June 2012, people will be amazed by its beauty and impressed by its practicality. INHERENT SPORTINESS

From the first glimpse, there is no denying the car’s sporting performance with its wide, athletic stance; low, prominent kidney grille; LED foglights and 18” alloy wheels as standard (19” for 650i models). What’s more, it delivers BMW’s trademark exhilarating driving dynamics thanks to a responsive and agile chassis, and signature BMW rear-wheel drive with near perfect 50:50 weight distribution.

POWER AND PERFORMANCE From launch, two enviable 640i and 640d engines will be available, in both SE and M Sport variants. All models feature a host of EfficientDynamics technologies as standard, including an eight-speed Sport automatic transmission and Auto Start-Stop, ensuring both power and efficiency.

To put this into perspective, the 640d delivers 313hp and 630Nm torque, yet still achieves 50.4mpg (combined) and just 148g/km of CO2 emissions. From July 2012, a brand new 650i engine will be available, taking the new Gran Coupé into performance car territory and delivering 0-62mph in just 4.6 seconds.

DESIRABLE DRIVERASSISTANCE OPTIONS

LUXURIOUS INTERIOR

While this high level of comfort and individuality is only to be expected from this pinnacle 6 Series model, the surprising element is that the Gran Coupé is as practical as it is beautiful. This is the first BMW Coupé to feature four doors for ease of access and a cleverly designed 60:40 split-folding rear seat configuration allows items, such as skis and other sports equipment to be easily transported.

Inside, the lavishly-appointed and spacious cabin is totally orientated around the driver, with the sweeping dashboard angled towards thedriver. The standard specification has been carefully matched to customers’ needs with desirable features, including Dakota leather upholstery, Bluetooth telephone preparation, Xenon headlights and Professional Multimedia Navigation with highresolution 10.2” display screen.

In keeping with BMW’s reputation for innovation, you’ll find a long list of technological driver-assistance options available, including a full colour Head-Up Display, Surround-View cameras, Adaptive Drive and Park Assist.

UNIQUE PRACTICALITY

B

oatfinder Brokerage Services is a family run brokerage business celebrating their 10th anniversary of successful boat sales. Whilst the company is actually based in Sandbach in Cheshire they are unique in that they specialize in selling boats from their home moorings throughout the country or even when the owners are out cruising. ey use a range of high quality marketing material to achieve this including DVD video tours which are sent out free of charge to interested buyers. Videos of all the boats for sale are also now available on their website. A recent development in Boatfinder’s anniversary year is a new partnership with Roydon Mill Marina Village near Harlow. Opened just over twelve months ago, Roydon Mill Marina in the beautiful Lee Valley in Essex is home for over three hundred river and canal craft. Boatfinder have joined forces with Roydon to broker boats exclusively from their marina using a sales display area with website access in the marina’s waterside café. Boatfinder focus on selling canal boats in all shapes and sizes from used narrowboats starting at around £25,000 all the way up to brand new Dutch barges at £250,000. ey currently have a selection of fabulous and unique boats available to view at Roydon and highlights include a glamorous two bedroom wide beam boat called Purple Haze, fitted out in a sparkling purple theme, ideal to use as an alternative holiday home that can be taken out and cruised on the county’s canals and rivers (perhaps even down the

For the business looking for an alternative venue to entertain clients there is a luxurious 70 foot by 12 foot wide beam boat called Belladonna, with a substantial saloon area fitted out in the finest quality materials including a bespoke open plan galley area, just perfect for hosting informal gatherings afloat, or simply use it as the ultimate floating one bed apartment. For the small business seeking distinctive premises to operate from there is a unique architect designed sixty foot by twelve foot barge called Nessie, offering two separate office areas and a large meeting room with innovative fold out galley, fitted out in a avant-garde style. e boat’s location at Roydon is ideal with its nearby rail link making central London just a thirty minute journey away. And if you can’t bring your clients to the office you could always cruise your office to the clients! ese are just a small selection of the boats for sale and all these boats are available with moorings at Roydon marina, so why not call in to have a look at them and have a drink at the waterside cafe. Alternatively you can find out more information about these boats and watch video footage of them at Boatfinder’s website at www.boatfinderbrokerage.co.uk 01270 760 799 ■
