It's a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. e world watches as fashion history is made. While we are all thinking about our autumn wardrobes and digging out our winter jumpers in an attempt to stay warm, designers were showcasing this year’s Autumn/Winter collections during last month's London Fashion Week. e first lady of British fashion today made her appearance at this season's London Fashion Week. Samantha Cameron graced the front row of the Christopher Kane catwalk show at central London's One New Change shopping centre. e Prime Minister's wife, who is ambassador to the British Fashion Council (BFC), was spotted wearing a Joseph trouser suit and a Jonathan Saunders green shirt. She also sported a pair of wedged black high shoes showing off a small blue tattoo on her right ankle. Mrs Cameron chatted with BFC executives before watching the autumn/winter collection. So who else was taking the front row seats at London Fashion Week?
Until next month…..

Ash Card Night__ 08/03/2012 13:25 Page 1
local events e networking event proved extremely popular and Ash’s passion for the scheme was infectious. John Mannix who runs Able Power said “I want to thank you, your family and staff for a great night. I think everyone benefitted from your ideas and passion for the Privilege scheme, and I feel it will be a great asset for my business too.”
I
t was a Privilege. at’s the verdict of the people who attended a unique networking event at the Saravanaa Bhavan, a vegetarian restaurant in Ilford, on ursday 29th February. e brainchild of cosmetic dentist Ash Parmar, principal dentist at Smile Design by Ash in Chigwell, the Privilege Partners scheme brought together representatives of over 60 local businesses and trades within a radius of ten miles. Ash, who opened his state of the art dental practice a year ago, said “ere is an abundance of talent right here on our doorsteps. I came across some brilliant people who helped me plan, build and market the dental practice. As I was telling people about them, I was informed about even more people who would go on to provide me with their excellent services. So the idea was born. We could help each other in a direct and practical way by using a Privilege Card that acts as a personal recommendation.” e next stage was to attract members to the scheme which is almost totally exclusive to avoid competition between companies. In less than a year, Ash’s vision to get 50 companies signed up was exceeded. e first run of 2,000 Privilege cards were taken up and since then a further 3,000 have been produced. Companies involved offer a wide range of services. Card display holders are appearing in local shops and offices, and the website is currently attracting a lot of attention.

LOCAL EVENTS
WELL JEL W
e are launching the first ever independent UK number plate auction in direct competition to the DVLA on March 31st 2012 in Essex, visit: www.KAR7.com e idea came about from attending DVLA auctions in the past and setting up our own registration company to offer a resale service, however it came apparent that no one else in the UK was actively offering a real auction service like the DVLA for registrations on retentions or on current vehicles. erefore we had a contact in the auction business and one evening struck upon the idea to run this brand new service offering people the chance to buy and sell registrations through auctions and not agencies currently offered in the UK. e auction will also be live online covering the whole of the UK. A feature was run in the Daily Star a few months back and also on the front page of the Guardian newspaper for purchasing the number plate WE11 JEL "the famous household catchphrase from Amy Childs and the TOWIE show" We thought our auction would be of great interest to your readers as we know that people in Essex like to stand out. We have around 280 number plates which will go to auction with catchy phrases and names to suit all manner of people. Although it is going to be run from the world famous "ESSEX" area the whole country will get a chance to buy as customers will be able to come to our premises or bid live online Entrepreneur Jason Russell also runs a successful international mobile telecoms company located in the heart of Essex in Queens Road, Buckhurst Hill. e Auction will take place at: Hainault Business Park, which houses Plaistow Auctions again which has previously been seen on T.V. We have been bombarded with number plates to sell for this first coming auction from people wishing to sell their own plates and also from UK registration agencies looking to offer their support. KAR7 have over 30,000 followers on twitter which helps a great deal and has been an amazing tool for marketing, why not follow @WE11JEL As I say we will be the first company to compete directly against the DVLA and have had some great feedback from the industry. ere is no other company in the country offering this service and people cannot sell registrations privately with the DVLA as they only sell unregistered plates and do not offer a resale service, which is only carried by agencies. Last week the DVLA sold DH11 LON for £80,000 all in raising a whopping total of £2.8m in a 3 day auction - so it is a huge business to the government in terms of raising revenue. We will be auctioning number plates such as MR D1Y which was featured on Tommy Walsh's truck on the BBC programme ground force for a number of years.

MARCH2012

In the main it’s very good at the lower end, with property between £1,000 and £1300 per calendar month, in great demand and in very short supply. However, the high end property is suffering, with little interest being shown in properties priced in excess of £4,000 per calendar month. e shortage of new homes coming to the market for sale is supporting values at the lower end of the market, and this is likely to continue for a little while. We shall see what happens when the leaves come back on the trees. You may have seen the latest stats from Nationwide showing that UK house prices edged up by 0.6% in February. is is just about as useful as knowing that the average temperature in February was the highest ever recorded. One fact most concerning, however, is that the relation of earnings to rents being paid followed the same downward line from 2007 – 2009, after which rental values for the first time have exceeded the rise in income. I believe that this rise could continue for a period followed by a sharp readjustment towards the end of this year. Phillip Leigh is principal of Phillip Leigh Associates of Chigwell. THE EYES HAVE IT! WORDS BY CHRISTINE BAKER PICTURES STEPHEN POVEY
SUSAN BYSZEWSKI LOVES HER PERFECT EYE SIGHT
MR PILLAI AND AVC STAFF
“e only glasses I have to think about now are which sunglasses to wear.” So said Susan Byszewski speaking about how corrective laser eye treatment has changed her life. “I was a contact lens wearer for years and almost blind without them. e improvement in my sight after treatment was amazing.”
e procedure, Clear Lens Exchange, meant replacing Susan’s lenses inside her eyes giving perfect sight for the rest of her life. “I worked out that at 51, presuming I lived to around 85, the cost of lenses and solution over that time made this procedure a great saving. Best of all I can play tennis better than ever before!”
Susan talked about her life changing experience at a special information evening held on 1st March co-hosted by Loughton optician Scher & Ward and Advanced Vision Care, based in Harley Street.
David Galman spoke about his laser treatment. “I just wanted to play football without glasses. I was 40, hated contact lenses so wore old glasses. After the treatment, which took no time at all, it was amazing. I could have gone to the High Street where they advertise cheap treatments but I trusted Glen who sent me to AVC. Everyone should know more about it and not let finance get in the way.”
A presentation by AVC showed that laser eye surgery has been available for 20 years with over 22 million laser procedures performed. It gave details about the various treatments now available and the remarkable results achieved. Mr Pillai, founder of AVC, is one of the UK’s most experienced refractive surgeons with 19 years ophthalmic experience. He has carried out over 20,000 procedures including many complicated and unique surgeries involving cataract, glaucoma and corneal grafting. Optician Glen Ward has worked in optics since 1979 and always had a keen interest in contact lens fitting and refractive surgery. “I was personally trained by Mr Pillai to assess suitability and carry out post operative checks. I get a real buzz hearing patients talk about how their lives are changed after treatment.” Susan said she was so reliant on her contacts she got stressed particularly when flying and the changes to what can be carried on the plane. She described her experience at AVC as a one stop shop. e consultation was stress free, gave good advice, great value and most of all reassurance.

AVC offers a full range of vision correction treatments including many non-laser procedures which can help people who have been turned away from other clinics. 100% of patients achieve driving standard eyesight after treatment and well over 95% of patients achieve 20/20 vision. Sue Sowerby, who attended the event, said “e presentation was excellent and provided myself and my friends with a real insight into what happens during laser vision correction. It also helped to allay any fears or concerns we may have had prior to the event. e two people who presented their personal stories convinced me that eye laser treatment is a viable option to glasses and contact lenses.” Vision correction treatment is a simple, pain free, non-intrusive procedure which changes lives forever. All procedures are affordable and money saving offers are available. For further information visit www.advancedvisioncare.co.uk or book an initial consultation with Glen Ward on 0208 508 5852 ■

50 YEARS OF SPRAY BAKERIES IN LOUGHTON, CHIGWELL AND BUCKHURST HILL WORDS: AMY HARRIS

pray’s Bakery is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. e bakery was founded by Peter Spray (Snr), and is now run by his sons Michael and Peter Spray.
Peter Spray (Snr) made the decision to establish a bakery after working in the catering corps in the army. He was fortunate to have the loving support and encouragement of his wife when developing the business. Peter Spray (Snr) is now retired but the bakery remains in the family. Michael Spray joined the business in the early 1980s and his younger brother Peter, joined 25 years ago. Michael and Peter split the running and demands of the business. Michael is responsible for making the goods at Lambourne End in Chigwell and Peter is responsible for all the administration. Spray’s Bakery has now

grown and evolved into a successful business where there are five bakeries across Essex. ere are bakeries in Loughton High Road, Queen’s Road in Buckhurst Hill, Lambourne End in Chigwell where all the cakes and breads are produced, a bakery in e Broadway in Loughton and the first bakery, established in Borders Lane, Loughton. Even though the business has grown, the company still uses the same traditional recipes for breads and cakes, that were first used 50 years ago. Spray’s Bakery first started selling doughnuts which are still their most popular and best-selling product. ey have also introduced cupcakes and wedding cakes to their selection. When I asked Peter Spray what makes them keep the tradition of using the same recipes, he answered confidently: “Because they work and they are good.” Spray’s Bakery takes great pride in their baking and all the breads and cakes are all hand-made and made fresh on the day. Peter stressed that all the cakes and goods that are sold use fresh ingredients and this is shown in the high quality and freshness of the goods. is is why they are able to retain a loyal customer base with 80% of their customers regularly buying their high quality sandwiches, breads and cakes. Peter added that after fifty years, the main thing that keeps the bakery alive is the passion and the craftsmanship that goes into making the products. When
I asked him about the secret to the bakeries success he added: “We have well-made breads and cakes that use good, wholesome recipes… Customers are attracted to buying the Bakery’s bread as eating a fresh loaf of bread tastes better and is healthier, for the body.”
He also takes pride that Spray’s Bakery is a traditional family business and hopes that this will continue, but he is uncertain about the future due to competition from large supermarkets, the economic climate and that people may prefer to make their sandwiches and cakes from home rather than buying from a bakery. However Spray’s Bakery is a great bakery, their cakes and breads are outstanding, so we wish them Congratulations for 50 Years – and hope they will still be on our High Streets in another 50 years. Spray’s Bakery can be found at 154 High Road, Loughton. If you would like more information - please visit: www.londonbaker.co.uk. ■

BRILLIANT NIGHT OUT IN BRENTWOOD Words: Michelle Harris
Meeting a friend for dinner, we parked around the back of the High Street (always allow plenty of time to park!) then wandered down the High Street. Hordes of good looking youngsters, wearing their best clothes and each looking like a contender for TOWIE! (e Only Way is Essex). Of course, I was walking past the Sugar Hut. Young girls wearing skimpy clothes, incredibly high shoes, mountains of preened hair, sparkling teeth and smiles, spider-like false eye-lashes and great tans! I was fascinated. e men/boys had clearly, spent as much time too, on their perfect appearances, style, stance, swagger and confident demeanour. But everyone did look great and it was youngsters doing – what youngsters should. Out and about – dressed in their best and having fun.

aturday night – the evenings are getting warmer and we’re all feeling more inclined to get dressed up to go out. With so many areas to enjoy evening entertainment, it must not be forgotten that one of the highlights of our areas, is Brentwood.
SAM FROM THE ONLY WAY ESSEX
As I walked past, I was tempted to put my head, around the door but clearly old enough to be parent, it was probably not appropriate so I restrained myself. Plus of course, my skimpy clothes days are long gone – and I was absolutely too over-dressed to be part of the revelry and the thought of being turned away by a bouncer, is a scenario that I would prefer not to re-visit! So my friend and I continued down the High Street to our destination, a reservation at the Red Frog restaurant. Relatively new as it opened in January 2009, it is owned by Leo Ghabi and Sam Hessam.
Leo is a dentist and has been living in Brentwood for more than 10 years. He felt there were too many chain Italian restaurants and that perhaps another food concept might be of interest. e Red Frog serves Modern European and British cuisine using the best locally sourced and sustainable produce. Lawrence Clifford, Head Chef, is passionate about food and regularly changes the main menu and specials to ensure the customers have a variety and extensive choice of fresh food. His background includes training at e Ritz, London. I enjoyed a wonderful meal that was cooked to perfection and certainly would hold its head high amongst some of the best restaurants in town. ey regular have themed evenings such as an upcoming Persian night (March 14th). Sam and his partner Fariba, will be cooking traditional Persian cuisine. A Spanish night in April and also regular evenings where local singing sensation Jessi Cooper joins the guests and serenades the customers. Speaking about the restaurant Sam stated: “Our aim was to present customers with a great quality dining experience in a relaxed and informal surrounding. We are very proud that not only we kept that promise but, I feel we have become the best restaurant in Brentwood.” Red Frog is perfect for business lunches, romantic dinners or a leisurely catch up with friends, providing fantastic food at a very affordable price. It has invested £70 million in a wide range of 2,000 youth initiatives including grass roots youth clubs, youth organisations and secondary schools throughout London and Essex. Founder, Jack Petchey CBE, aged 86 said “I am very proud of our awards scheme because it sums up exactly what the Foundation seeks to do - raise aspirations, reward achievement and make a difference to young people whatever their circumstances.” For more information please visit www.jackpetcheyfoundation.org.uk

GETTING NOTICED… BEING REMEMBERED – WE’RE TALKING BUSINESS
How do YOU get noticed? What makes you different? Easy questions but the answers are complicated and merit thought and analysis… ● Who is your TARGET AUDIENCE? ● Analysing their requirements – not what YOU want to sell them! ● Speaking THEIR language ● Understanding why YOU’RE better and different to your competitors ● Promoting your USP (Unique Selling Proposition) and mission statement WHERE DO YOU BEGIN? Do you need to be talked about? Yes How important is reputation? Everything – NETWORK! Should you ever cut back on marketing/advertising? Absolutely not! “She (Michelle Harris) is a highly talented copywriter whom I have had the privilege of working with on a number of business projects… the end results are inevitably outstanding…” Ash Parmar – Founder of Smile Design by Ash (Used Star Copywriting Limited for the copywriting of three brochures, website, scripts for promotional videos, advertorials and marketing advice) Most business owners believe that by reducing their allocated budget for marketing and advertising is to make savings! WRONG. If people don’t hear about you or see you, they will go straight to your competitors… Tell your target audience why THEY should be using YOU…
AFRAID OF SPENDING TOO MUCH AND NOT GETTING ENOUGH RETURN ON YOUR INVESTMENT? e short answer is to plan and have a marketing strategy. Research and understand the results. Be realistic about what you are trying to achieve and have a long-term vision. An aspiration for a certain level of success after six months – one year – three years… Know where you want to go … Plan the focused campaign that will deliver the right results… Outstanding website, a strategic brochure, a script for your website - so you can personally, deliver your message. And of course, powerful advertisements. ● Marketing Strategies ● Websites ● Brochures ● Advertorials ● Press Releases ● Advertisements ● TV/Radio/Website Scripts ● Sales Letters PERFECT WORDS STRIKING MESSAGE BETTER BUSINESS Call Michelle Harris for a free initial consultation Mobile: 07949 556 294 Email: Michelle@starcopywriting.com www.starcopywriting.com ■

Group Principal, Matthew Hagger states “Our two prep schools, Epping’s Coopersale Hall and Loughton’s Oaklands do a fine job of preparing our pupils for the challenges of 11+ exams. is year has seen an outstanding set of results for most children with some gaining scholarships. At Normanhurst in North Chingford, the small class sizes provide a personalised education for each child, which is how children exceed expectations at GCSE. Our March Open Days are always popular with parents seeking places for September 2012 and beyond.”

ince the first ever London Marathon on 29th March 1981, the race has grown in size, stature and popularity ever since. Now established among the major events in the sporting calendar, the London Marathon is shown on television in more that 150 countries around the world. As a fundraising event, there is no race in the world that comes close to the London Marathon. Runners in the 2011 Virgin London Marathon set yet another record figure for charity fund raising when they collected £51.8 million for good causes at last year’s race , confirming the London Marathon as the largest annual one-day fund raising event in the world. With a similar total expected from this year’s runners, the total raised over 30 years since the first race in 1981 will reach more than £500 million! An iconic image of the event is the thousands of runners traipsing the streets to raise money for charity, many in fancy dress, hoping to stand out as a rhino, football mascot, giant tree, or escaped convict. More than three quarters of competitors now run for a good cause and a third of all entry places are offered by charitable organisations. In addition, over the last three decades the London Marathon

David Weir and Amanda McGrory will defend their Virgin London Marathon titles against the strongest fields ever assembled for the elite wheelchair races. Weir is aiming to match the six London Marathon titles won by British Paralympic legend Dame Tanni Grey -ompson when he makes his 12th consecutive appearance in the race. Celebrities lined up to take part this year include: chefs Michel Roux, Gordon Ramsey, Tom Aiken and Tony Tobin, Will Young, DJ's Neil 'Doctor ' Fox, Mark Goodier and Charlie Hedges, Callum Best, Ben Fogle, Katie Price, Nadia Sawahla and EastEnders stars Danielle Harold and Neil McDermott. Some advice to those that wish to go along and support and cheer on the brave runners, many roads are closed on race day, so the best way to get around is using the London Underground, South Eastern and Docklands Light Railway (DLR), who lay on extra services especially. Remember, the trains will be busy all day – expect it to be like rush hour. You’ll probably have to queue at some stations and the tube lines may be forced to shut temporarily throughout the day to help ease the crowds. For more details go to www.virginlondonmarathon.com

Mothers ’ Day THANK YOU TO
18TH MARCH 2012
Words: Michelle Harris “At work, you think of the children you have left at home. At home, you think of the work you've left unfinished. Such a struggle is unleashed within yourself. Your heart is rent.” Golda Meir Most mothers look forward to Mother’s Day. Although most children show their appreciation throughout the year, Mothering Sunday (Mother’s Day) formalises the unbreakable bond in an international and united act of celebration. From child to adult, each relationship with a mother is special and the positive energy that ignites the home with love, comfort and security. So, where do you begin to say ‘ank You’ to somebody who has given so much in the name of motherhood and unconditional love. Probably the first step is some serious 36

pampering…. Breakfast in bed. Mothers are normally the first one up in the morning, orchestrating the day’s events, thinking ahead for everybody else’s needs and keeping the wheels of the home machine, well-oiled, functional and efficient! So on this special day, allow the mother to STOP Brekky in bed! Consider the technicalities necessary: croissants, jam, hot tea preferably in china cup, napkin and with a little thought and preparation, a small flower in a vase. Most supermarkets are open late, so if the task feels daunting the night before, help and supplies, are always available. ere is a lot to be said for ‘the thought’ but deliverance – is even better. e ultimate is to have breakfast served as room service. ere’s no better sound, (whilst you’re curled up
in bed, warm, snug and very cosy) then the clink-clink promise of breakfast on a tray. Slow, careful footsteps, coming up the stairs. A pregnant pause outside the bedroom. e whiff of cooked eggs and hot toast in close proximity… “The heart of a mother is a deep abyss at the bottom of which you will always find forgiveness.” Honore de Balzac But not necessarily if you forgot Mother’s Day and can only offer embarrassed apologies and no tray laden with sumptuous delights! For those looking to offer their mother, more than hot tea and toast for Mother’s Day A QUICK OVERVIEW OF OTHER TREATS IN THE AREA INCLUDE: LOUGHTON - Loch Fyne have a special Mother’s Day 3

THE GAUCHO INTERNATIONAL POLO
O
n 21st March 2012 Gaucho will host The Gaucho International Polo at London’s O2 arena, uniting high-octane polo interspersed with live world famous music to produce a unique event never seen before in Britain. Following the triumphant inaugural year in 2011, Gaucho International Polo has now evolved into the ultimate celebration of Argentina’s sporting and cultural heritage at the O2 arena. The 2012 event will consist of two international arena polo matches merged with exclusive performances from Grammy award winning band, Bajofondo. Bajofondo, who have put ‘electrotango’ firmly on the world music map will open and play throughout the tournament, creating a thrilling blend of polo and performances. The matches will see Scotland taking on Ireland and culminate in the titanic clash between IG Index’s England and Argentina, pitting Britain’s finest player, Jamie Morrison 38
against the Royals’ favourite star, Nacho Figueras. The Gaucho International Polo will be a true Argentine festival, with tastings from some of the country’s finest wine producers, brought to the event by leading authority, Wines of Argentina. There will also be a fun and charitable twist to the event in the form of “The White Jeans Party’. What to wear to polo matches has often been hotly debated amongst the style conscious, but white jeans are winning in the fashion stakes with enthusiasts such as Prince Harry donning them at matches around the world. In keeping with this, every guest who arrives at the event wearing a pair, a pound will be donated to the BFF (British Forces Foundation). Arena polo is an emerging trend in the polo world and takes place on a smaller pitch with only three players per team rather than the usual four, creating a fast-paced and spectator friendly game. With simpler rules and tickets starting at just £20, it is an accessible way of introducing

he vibrant and internationally renowned London Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month's event proved to be just that. London Fashion Week presented another unrivalled opportunity for both established designers and newcomers to present their latest collections. A constantly buzzing key event for those who haven't got the patience to wait until the latest fashion designs and stylish fashion trends make it into the fashion magazines. e magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers' and fashion stylists' cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. e allure of the show is exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe. Celebrities from the worlds of sport, music and film watched the Burberry Prorsum show at Kensington Gardens in London. Rap star Will.i.am was there and Hollywood actress Kate Bosworth was over from her native Los Angeles for the event. Former 'Strictly Come Dancing' contestant
Holly Valance attended with her property tycoon fiancé Nick Candy. Singer Will Young wrapped up in a cosy cashmere knit.Boxer Amir Khan made up the sportspeople on the front row......along with former athlete Denise Lewis. Stella McCartney’s show proved her one of the most influential designers in the world. Not many had a guest list like this one: Rihanna, Kate Moss, Jamie Hince, Amber Valletta, Shalom Harlow – and that was just the seating plan of Stella’s own table. Much table hopping went on as Yasmin Le Bon chatted to Paul Whitehouse, Minnie Driver caught up with Mario Testino, Richard E Grant met Alison Mosshart, Jo Whiley caught up with British singing sensation Katy B – it was a case of who wasn’t there. Topshop Unique always draws a celebrity-packed front row. Alexa Chung looked casual but stylish in classic navy jeans and coat. Girls Aloud singer, make-up entrepreneur and dedicated follower of fashion Nicola Roberts also attended the Topshop Unique show. Actress and designer Sadie Frost also made an appearance at the Vivienne Westwood Red Label show looking summery in salmon pink. At Aquascutumn, singer Dionne Bromfield mingled with One Directon's Harry Styles , and comedian James Corden and his fiancé Julia Carey . Alexa Chung and Pixie Geldof supported their friend Henry Holland by sitting in on his House of Holland show. So what we will be wearing this Autumn and Winter? Here are just a selection of those names that hit the catwalk! BURBERRY Over 1500 guests attended in London's Hyde Park. MENSWEAR DAY AUTUMN/WINTER 2012 Menswear Day autumn/winter 2012 captured the essence of the capital's menswear talent including the eight designers under the NEWGEN MEN umbrella, the dynamic NEWGEN MEN & Fashion East installations and the tailoring of the Savile Row presentations. Wednesday 22nd February was a highlight of London Fashion Week, with 9 on schedule catwalk shows and 3 presentations. e menswear showrooms returned for a second season, located on the first floor of Somerset House. Six menswear designers showcased in this dedicated space including Baartmanns & Siegel, Junky Styling, Mr Start, Omar Kashoura, Palmer // Harding and Serdar Uzuntas. NEWGEN MEN began in February 2009, building on TOPMAN and Fashion East’s successful MAN initiative. It has since become instrumental in raising the profile of emerging British designers using the dedicated Menswear Day at London Fashion Week as a showcasing platform. It isn't so different from the women's shows – there's the clothes, the models, the celebrities – but it is more relaxed.

Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR BRACES: INMAN ALIGNER AND 6 MONTH SMILES Are you one of the millions of adults who are unhappy, self-conscious or even embarrassed of your smile? Many adults spend their entire lives covering their mouths when they laugh, smile or talk. ey feel stuck because they do not want to wear metal braces for years or they are concerned that other corrective procedures could be too invasive or too expensive. Now, there is an effective, safe and affordable cosmetic solution that fits your lifestyle. We offer two amazing and revolutionary braces systems for adults. One is the removable brace called e Inman Aligner, and the other is called the Six Month Smiles system, which is very popular in the USA, and increasingly in the UK. It is important to have a decay free, healthy mouth and excellent oral hygiene before braces are considered. What is the range of orthodontic treatment available? For crooked teeth, or if there are gaps between teeth, it is possible to do orthodontic treatment. My wife Jyoti and I are trained to offer the Six Months Smiles (tooth coloured brackets, tooth coloured wires and a fixed brace) and the Inman Aligner (removable plastic brace). ese techniques can correct mild to moderate crowding, as well as if there are gaps between teeth. ese special braces are for adults only (i.e. anyone over 16 years old). If one of our clients requires more complex orthodontic treatment, we will refer to an orthodontist. ere are a number of other orthodontic treatment approaches e.g. conventional fixed
46
MARCH2012
orthodontics, lingual orthodontics (brace brackets fixed to the inside of teeth), Invisalign, etc. What is the Six Month Smiles (6MS) system? is is a revolutionary fixed braces technique from the USA. e treatment starts by taking some very accurate impressions of your teeth. ese are then sent to the specialist 6MS laboratory in America. ree weeks later, we can see the patient to actually fit the braces. e brackets are clear, and the thin nickel- titanium wire is also tooth coloured, making this a very aesthetic system. If teeth are crowded, then there is need to do some polishing/gentle removal of small amounts of enamel between the teeth. In this way, space is gained to re-align crooked teeth. Additional space is also achieved by teeth that are “in standing” moving outwards (to a slightly wider arc). is approach is very standard in orthodontic treatment. How frequent are the dental visits? e review visits are normally every 4 weeks or so, when the wire is removed, the teeth and mouth checked, and some further gentle, selective enamel adjustments between teeth carried out. e wire is then reaffixed. e treatment time is normally 4-9 months, with an average of 6 months for many cases. e big advantages of this system are the speed of treatment and the aesthetics. How are Six Month Smiles braces more comfortable than regular braces? Six Month Smiles braces use low force to move teeth more comfortably. Many people think that the accelerated treatment means simply “tightening” regular braces to get the teeth moving,
but that is not true. Six Month Smiles utilizes standard orthodontic mechanics, but with an emphasis on the cosmetic appearance of your teeth rather than the position of your bite. What is the Inman Aligner? is is a special removable brace that is also useful and effective to correct crowding of teeth and closing small gaps. Only one arch at a time can usually be treated. e treatment time is normally shorter (e.g. 4 months). Enamel adjustments between teeth are required as with 6MS. e brace needs to be worn for 20 hours a day, and can be taken out for eating. Initially it feels a bit alien, and the speech is altered, but patients soon get used to it. ere may also be increased salivation initially.
e following categories are best treated by an orthodontist to achieve an optimum end result: ● Children ● A large overjet (i.e. the upper teeth are sticking out excessively) ● Severe crowding ● Teeth in a cross bite (i.e. if the upper jaw is narrow and requires “arch expansion”) ● Previous asymmetric extractions (which may have resulted in undesired movements of the teeth) What can be done after braces to achieve the winning smile? In summary, orthodontic treatment is a great treatment option if the teeth are crooked to begin with. Once the teeth have been straightened, there may be a requirement for further cosmetic treatment such as teeth whitening, white fillings or porcelain veneers. Whiter teeth will always make a person look younger and more attractive. e use of white fillings or porcelain can help close certain small gaps, lengthen shorter teeth and make a smile appear fuller (if required).
Do I need a retainer at the end of the braces treatment? Research has shown that teeth will move again in 70% of cases if a retainer is not made and fitted. erefore, at the end of any braces treatment, it is normal to have a fixed retainer i.e. a thin wire (either a metal wire or a tooth coloured fibre) and white filling material used to splint or join up the front teeth (normally the front six teeth only) from the inside. is will keep the teeth in the new position. e alternative is to wear a removable retainer at night time indefinitely. Which cases are better treated by an orthodontist?

WHAT HAVE JAM DOUGHNUTS GOT TO DO WITH BACK PAIN & SCIATICA?
I
was treating myself to a “naughty but nice” moment last week as I took a hearty bite from a jam doughnut. With strawberry jam leaking from the doughnut and dribbling onto my chin, it suddenly struck me how this doughnut was rather like a herniated intervertebral disc in the spine. I made a mental note to myself to use more jam doughnuts when demonstrating to my patients how their backs work! HERE ARE SOME DISC FACTS: ● e discs act as shock absorbers for the spine and act as spacers between the vertebrae and the “nerve roots” emerging between the vertebrae. In the lower back these nerve roots join to form the Sciatic Nerve. ● Each disc is numbered depending on it’s location (e.g. the L4/5 disc is the disc separating the L4 & L5 vertebrae). ● e centre of a healthy disc is called the Nucleus Pulposus. is has a jelly like consistency contributing to the discs springy shock absorption qualities. ● e outer wall of the disc is called the Annulus Fibrosis and is made of layers of collagen fibres orientated in a criss-cross pattern at 30 degrees to one another. ● Discs have hardly any direct nerve supply which is why damage often accumulates unnoticed. ey also have hardly any blood supply and rely on changes in pressure to exchange nutrients and waste products in order to stay healthy.
50
MARCH2012
In the same way as jam leaked out of the doughnut onto my chin when my bite increased the pressure within the doughnut, damage and pressure accumulation on the discs can cause the nucleus to bulge or leak out as in the case of a slipped, protruded, or “herniated” disc. When the bulge is large enough it can pinch the neighbouring nerve root and very often cause severe sciatic pain down one leg, as well as pins and needles or even weakness. Alternatively if the nucleus dries out (shown as a completely “black disc” on an MRI scan) the disc may loose it shock absorption qualities or become so squashed and thin that excess wear and tear is placed on other parts of the vertebra such as the knuckle sized “facet joints” on either side of the vertebra. is can be a source of intense localized back pain.
Robert Shanks is co-founder of e National Back Pain Helpline and was recently a speakers at e Back Show, held at Olympia last month, where he spoke on “Modern Treatment Options For Disc Problems” (including therapy, injections, surgery and IDD). Robert is also the founding company Director of the Multidisciplinary Spine Plus Clinics which include Chigwell Osteopathy and Physiotherapy Practice. e clinic specialises in physical therapy for disc problems. Recently the clinic became the first in Essex and one of only six in the country to feature an “IDD Computerized Spinal Decompression Machine”. ell what an interesting month since I last addressed these pages. I’ve had more enquiries from readers than the previous three months put together, which reminded me of the writing load I used to have when I was the ‘Silver Editor’ of an American newspaper called “e Antiques Monthly” and questions with photographs poured in from all over the States. Anyway the recent batch of enquiries was so diverse that thought I would print just a couple for you to illustrate the range of items that people have. e first is one of a pair of vases, each bearing the stamp of Carlton Ware, but the owner could find no further information. e vases are extremely - what is known in the trade as ‘showy’; lots of shape and lots of colour with big classical scenes on the front and back. is was because the Victorians of the late 19th century loved mirrors over their fireplaces, at the back of sideboards and anywhere else they could stand ornaments, and so they had to be decorated on the reverse side as well as the front. is practice did not cease with the end of the century and continued well into the next, when in fact these vases were made. Carlton Ware was one of many products from the company formed by the partnership of Laurence Arthur Birks and Adolphus Joseph Rawlins in the 1890's, which continued until1932 at the Vine Pottery at Stoke. e company was still in production in 1957. ey made china in addition to their earthenware products the latter of which these vases are a fine example. For something so decorative it is surprising that these wares do not have great commercial value. ey were made in vast number and, being available to the masses of

middle class families were considered ‘old fashioned’ by the following two generations, and are only just being collected.
create revival pieces of an earlier period. But sometimes even this can defeat an old hand like me. A case in point is the slope-top box illustrated. ese boxes are often referred to as bible boxes but that more correctly describes a straightforward box with no slope. is is actually a desk, of a type not much referred to before the Tudor period but universally popular by the end of the 17th century when more people could read and write. One early record is in an inventory of Sir William More of Loseley who owned ‘a deske (sic) of chestnut tree’ and ‘another little deske to wryte (sic) on. e latter was valued at 3d by the valuer.
e name of the country of origin marked on any item will indicate that it was made after 1891 when the ‘McKinley Tariff ’ as it was known was brought in by the future President of e United States of America as an import protectionist measure. e addition of the words ‘Made In’ will indicate after 1904. ere are very few rules in the antiques business but that is certainly one of them. Dates inscribed, engraved or carved on antiques can be very difficult to authenticate; the typeface and quality of writing are key factors. It is too complicated to put briefly but a guide rather than a rule is to visit and take note in a cemetery of the dates and lettering on gravestones. It was rarely if ever done to put old-fashioned lettering on a headstone, and of course a date before the lettering was invented would be equally wrong. e forms of decorative borders and frames, particularly around crests, coats of arms and presentation inscriptions are also indicative of age. e Victorians loved to mix designs and periods when they tried to
Now part of the carving on this desk is a mystery to me. e scrolling designs is common enough and typical of the mid to late 17th century which would tie up nicely with the construction and the iron work and it is good Baltic oak, the stable timber for good solid furniture at the time. But to my knowledge the diagonal lines do not fit to any known pattern in the UK, nor am I sure if they are contemporary. It could be Scandinavian or even more romantically, it could have been done by a sailor on board ship after he had visited some exotic island and picked up some native designs. So I’m stuck on this one and ask if anyone recognises this pattern, and has the sort of ”Oh I know where that came from” reaction please write and tell me. One of the most interesting pieces of American silver I have ever dealt with came to light after an enquiry from an English reader of ‘e Antiques Monthly’. It was a large bowl with two cast side handles and a presentation inscription over a coat of arms. It read ”Valentine and Louisa D.
Mott”. Back in the 1970’s this meant nothing to me and there was no Google, but the lettering of the inscription was typical of the 1850’s, so we had an approximate date. Underneath were the stamps ‘Jones,Ball & Co’ ‘Boston’ and most interestingly ‘Pure Silver Coin’. Armed with this I flew to my copy of Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers by the delightfully named Dorothy T. Rainwater. Here I discovered that Jones and Ball registered their mark in 1852 as part of a huge conglomerate with the equally engaging name of ‘Shreve, Crump and Low, Co. Inc. ey certainly know how to come up with catchy titles. So now we have date, maker and material. But who were Valentine and Louisa Mott? e shield of the coat of arms was divided in three; in one third was a hand with a scalpel, another was a ribbon around a tube and the last was a crescent. e latter is a device with many meanings but the scalpel was a clue. By now I’m sure the suspense is almost too much to bear so I will cut to the chase and tell you that via e New York Historical Society, Rosary College Library, Chicago and the Milwaukee Museum of Fine Art I found that Valentine Mott was a hugely important American surgeon (1785 – 1865) who performed over one thousand ground-breaking operations including the first successful amputation at the hip. e bowl went on tour from New York to the places just mentioned and now rests on display In the Milwaukee museum. So you never know what might happen when you write to me. I hope someone will re the Desk.

he right bed is extremely important to our health and wellbeing because our sleeping environment will affect the quality of our sleep – which in turn has a big effect on how well we feel, both physically and psychologically.
A bed with the correct support, comfort and space will ensure you wake less, move about less, are less disturbed by your partner and are less likely to wake up feeling tired or aching. So, what is the right bed? It’s not easy to make specific recommendations. ere’s such a huge choice on the market place and the key deciding factor – is it comfortable – is such a subjective measure. “All we can do is give people an overview of the different types of bed available and tips on how to go about the process of choosing the right bed for them,” explains Sleep Council spokesperson Jessica Alexander. e Sleep Council was set up to provide an independent source of advice on bed buying – as well as to raise awareness of the importance of getting a good night’s sleep to health and wellbeing. According to e Sleep Council, Goldilocks had the right idea: the right bed’s neither too soft nor too hard – but it suits everyone’s very individual needs. First and foremost it must give you correct support and comfort – but individuals might also have to consider factors such as back pain, allergies, breathing problems, available budget, whether a type of mattress makes you too hot, storage or space requirements: not to mention style preferences. Size is important. e most common British double bed size of 4ft 6in x 6ft 3in (135cm x 190cm) really isn’t big enough for two to sleep well without disturbing each other: studies have shown that more space – even a slight move up to a 5ft x 6ft 6in (150cm x 200cm) King size bed – can make a lot of difference to night-time comfort. Always consider both the mattress and its support, whether divan base or bedstead. ey work together to create the overall feel and performance of a bed, with different combinations producing differing results. If you are not buying a base and mattress from the same supplier, make sure the mattress is suitable for use with the type of support you are considering: if you don’t, lack of durability could be a problem, with no comeback to the supplier. ere are many types – and prices of beds – from which to choose, each offering their own features and benefits. Mattresses come with various types of internal spring unit – open coil, pocket sprung or continuous springing – in ordinary foam, visco-elastic or latex foam, filled with cotton or other fibres (futons!). You should spend as much as you can afford on a new bed – it’s probably one of the most important investments you’ll make, not just for your home but also for your own wellbeing! Remember, every £100 you spend represents just 2.7p a night over 10 years.
Once you’ve got your new bed, do remember that it won’t stay wonderful forever – beds get a lot of wear and tear! Over time, your comfort and support needs change, too. Do the Bed MOT test once a year – National Bed Month, which runs throughout March, is a good time to consider the state of your bed and your sleep and comfort quality. Visit www.sleepcouncil.com to take the Bed MOT, New Bed Profile, reach bed-buying and sleep tips, and watch videos that help people sleep better or select the right bed for them. e Sleep Council is a generic organisation which seeks to promote the importance of a good night’s sleep to health and wellbeing and the advantages associated with a comfortable bed, regularly replaced. In addition to advice on how to get a good night’s sleep, the Sleep Council provides tips on choosing the right bed. e Sleep Council is funded by the bed industry www.sleepcouncil.org.uk ■

THE WORLD’S CLEANEST GARAGE BY GARAGETEK “In many cases the garage is over 10% of the space in a house and yet owners have not had a sensible proposition to do anything with it. ey will happily leave their £50,000 Mercedes on the drive in all weather whilst there is probably £1,000 of odds and ends lying all over the garage floor. is really doesn’t make a lot of sense and I was determined to find a solution,” says Alastair Broom. “Added to that in a house with a value today of, say £750,000, 10% equates to the garage having a potential value of £75,000. Does it feel like that value to most owners? Why not increase its value and therefore the value of the house as well as making maximum use of the space?” THE BENEFITS OF GARAGETEK GarageTek will design and install a storage solution that gets everything off the floor and onto the walls in specially designed cabinets, baskets,
racks and hooks. e main benefits are that it is: n
Easy to keep clean and tidy
n
Gives a bright glossy look thereby increasing light
n
Easy to move and re-organise everything whenever you want
n
Weather-proof and bug-proof
n
Professionally designed and installed
n
Covered by a 10 year warranty
With options for the walls, floor, ceiling and over 80 different units there is clearly something for everyone. And there is no need to have the whole garage fitted: the system is so flexible that it is possible to have just one wall fitted, maybe with a new floor and the rest can be done at a later stage if that fits the budget better.
THE VALUE OF VERSATILITY e foundation of the GarageTek system is the patented TekPanel, a strong, attractive wall panel on which other system elements are attached. TekPanel is bright, strong and covers the walls of the garage and then a modular system of high performance cabinets, shelves, baskets and activity racks are added to the slotted walls with clip-on brackets. e GarageTek system can easily accommodate storage of various items. For example: n Sports enthusiasts can select activity racks specifically designed for stowing bicycles, fishing rods and tackle, sailing equipment, canoes, golf clubs and shoes, ski equipment or tennis equipment n Kids will love to have their own private lockers and racks for sports gear n Gardeners can organise their tools handily

HOUSE GARDEN
n Brackets, baskets and shelving handle household supplies, while lockable cabinets can keep paints and chemicals safe from young hands. n Woodworkers or hobby enthusiasts can create a well-organised workshop area with benchs, cabinets, part bins, tip-out bins, tool holders and hooks
If storage needs or hobbies change, the beauty of GarageTek is its adaptability. Any layout changes are easy: the owner simply lifts and
of colours and patterns to choose from. CUSTOM DESIGN AND INSTALLATION When a homeowner is interested in a GarageTek system, the first step is a no strings attached free consultation where a GarageTek designer will create a custom rendering of the proposed garage organisation system using the Company’s own GarageVision software. e garage will be measured and designed to the owner’s needs and requirements and a comprehensive colour layout
GarageTek system which will create or enhance a lot of space in their home.” ENJOY THE GARAGE e final piece in the jigsaw is the enjoyment. It is the most important step. A GarageTek system gives so much more flexibility. Owners can re-configure the accessories anywhere on the walls at any time without the need for tools. If you need more accessories – no problem. GarageTek have them in stock and they can easily be added to the system at any time.

slides the item to a new location. GarageTek also offers a choice of flooring system: an extraordinarily strong, stain resistant and easy to keep clean interlocking tile or a very popular seamless Resin coating that gives the garage a car showroom look. Like the entire GarageTek system, the flooring is custom designed and versatile with a wide range
and price structure is given to homeowners so that they can see exactly how their garage will look. “Whilst the do-it-yourself on a budget is not our core market we have sold a number of our systems and the owners will do the installation themselves” says Broom. “Our market is the homeowner who understands value and wants the convenience and style of a
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY CUSTOMERS GENUINELY ENJOY USING THEIR GARAGE BECAUSE THEY ARE SUDDENLY A PLEASURE TO BE IN!
Alastair Broom’s vision is for the garage to be considered on the same level of thinking as the rest of the home. “ In a few years I expect to see the GarageTek brand as a part of Estate Agents’ details in much the same way as the quality brands for kitchens are today.” One thing is clear: homeowners now have a serious and quality option for upgrading their garage to make it a highly usable space be it for storage, recreation or keeping that car in throughout the year. insulated your home is, the more money you're likely to save, especially if it has an open-plan layout or you keep the internal doors open so the stove does more than just heat the room it's in. Wood burners can give out a lot of heat and you should need your heating on less when yours is lit. When it comes to the wood you burn, it's not as simple as you might think. Freshly cut wood contains up to 90% water, so you have to dry it out (season it) before you can burn it. is can take as long as three years. You can buy wood that's already seasoned, or you can season it yourself using a log store. e important thing is to allow air to circulate all around the logs so they dry out. e installation of a wood-burning stove must comply with building regulations. Rather than involving your local council's building control department (which can check and sign off the work for a fee), it's often easier to get a qualified fitter to do the job. HETAS-registered installers deal with wood, solid-fuel and biomass domestic heating appliances and can self-certify that their work complies with building regulations. Another consideration is whether the chimney needs to be lined before the stove is installed. Homes dating from the mid-1960s onwards should have had a concrete/clay chimney liner fitted when they were built, but older properties won't necessarily have an adequate liner. Get your installer to smoke-test your chimney to see if it leaks if necessary, they should be able to line it. ere are lots of benefits to having a chimney lined, including better energy efficiency - and who doesn't want that?
A WOOD-BURNING STOVE
PRODUCT OF THE WEEK Cuprinol has launched a new Garden Shades Colour Mixing service, thought to be a first for woodcare. e service offers 26 new colours, including everything from traditional, earthy garden greens to bolder and brighter pinks and purples.
FIRE IT UP G et those jobs done with a little help from DIY guru Julia Gray. is week: how to get all the benefits of a real fire by using a wood-burning stove. e weather may be warming up, but it's still nice to snuggle up in front of a real fire. e problem with open fires is that they're not very energy efficient, at only around 20%. e majority of wood-burning stoves, on the other hand, are 70-90% efficient, so you get all the benefits of a real fire without most of your money going up in smoke. With prices for wood burners starting at less than £200, they can be a really good investment. And wood, as long as it's sustainably sourced, is a more environmentally friendly fuel than oil or gas - and subject to fewer price hikes. But if you don't want to burn just wood, you don't have to - get a multi-fuel stove, and you should be able to burn coal, smokeless fuel, turf and peat, too. While the stoves themselves can be relatively inexpensive, you need to add on the cost of the accessories, installation and any associated building working. e good news is that your stove should start saving you money straightaway. e more powerful it is and the smaller and better

For more information, go to www.cuprinol.co.uk where you can buy tester pots and will find great ideas about how to jazz up your garden wood this spring/summer. HOW-TO TIP If your radiators are hot at the bottom and cold at the top, this usually means there's trapped air inside, which stops them from filling with water and working properly. e bleed valve is generally at the top of the radiator, and the shape of the hole in it will determine whether you use a radiator key or a small screwdriver to bleed it. Only bleed your radiators when the central heating is turned off and the radiators are cold. If you don't, you could get scalded, and more air could get into the radiators. Before you open the bleed valve, cover the floor underneath to protect it, and hold a cloth underneath the valve to catch any drips. Insert the key or screwdriver into the valve and turn it slowly to open it. You'll hear a hissing sound, which is the air escaping. Once water starts coming out, close the valve, clean up and move on to the next radiator ■
