Reminiscent of the film ‘You’ve Got Mail’ with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, Epping has its own version: a small shop’s survival against a massive book retailer. Lorna Clark, owner of the Epping Bookshop for the last 33 years, is not happy: WH Smith has just opened a book shop in the same High Street. Feeling there isn’t enough business for two shops, she is determined to maintain her position. Epping Bookshop is already established, offers incredible discounts, extra benefits and more especially, caters to the local and loyal community – we visited a local business

owner.

It is Saturday night and you are thinking – where should you go for dinner? Should you buy a curry or maybe go out for a pizza? If these questions are swirling through your mind and you cannot decide where to eat, there is a hub of different restaurants that you can visit in Loughton High Street with a full and exciting range of international cuisine. A whole selection of different style culinary restaurants, cafes and coffee shops that serve food and beverages from around the world – we take a look at life on Loughton High Street. Enjoy your issue and let’s hope for some sun!

VIEWS ON WHAT’S HAPPENING Words: Michelle Harris

Michelle Harris

F

eels incredible that we are coming up to nearly half-way through 2012. Seems like only a few months ago since we were toasting in 2012 as a new year and THE year, for Olympics GB. Although there is a great deal of excitement about the Olympics, for most us within this magazine’s readership (living only 20 minutes away from Stratford) is simultaneous concern for the already struggling Central Line – how will it cope with the onslaught of all these visitors on our terra firma, on the already fragile underground? Allegedly the

14

M AY 2 0 1 2

service, should be capable of transporting us into the City and West End but frequently, there is trouble with the line if there is snow or leaves; signal problems/failure, dodgy trains and overcrowding resulting in multiple delays. Every time, I brace myself for West End meetings, I know that to be safe, is to allow a lot of extra time … so to travel regularly, must be difficult. e last time I trekked into London, there was a problem with a faulty door. Everybody kicked out at Leytonstone and onto an already, packed train. Trains which promise Hainault via Newbury Park, can turn into

Epping or Debden (by announcement) at Leytonstone. You may think you know where you’re going – but trains – like allegedly some women – can be known to change their minds! At worst and per usual, we can always watch the Olympics on the television. Hopefully as only a short distance from the action, we shouldn’t have any problems with signals! Other than if our satellite providers, let us down… So what other highlights in Essex? e Apprentice – ‘Flip It in Essex’ shown on 2nd May. As the apprentices, stock up on fake tan from a warehouse, comments abound about Essex and fake tans… sadly, the jokes were on us, as the fake tans sold incredibly well. Scenes of Romford market, Ilford shopping centre and Pitsea (personally, I thought a bit of a daft move) as market trader banter and selling technique, wowed the punters! Five minute wonder insects, were snapped up by kids, then the inevitable and edge of your seat stuff, as Lord Sugar makes his you're fired decision. Would it be Jade? Or would it be Azhar? Tom too was brought back to the boardroom but it was unanimous – he shouldn’t have been there. Jade, like moths in the spring, was somewhat

swatable – but it was Azhar that had the infamous finger pointed in his direction. So if Olympics don’t excite – brace yourself for the Eurovision contest – scheduled for 26th May. Have listened to some of the entries and to those who don’t know – Engelbert Humperdinck (remember him?) will be singing ‘Love Will Set You Free’. On the other hand, Norway’s entry, Tooji singing ‘Stay’ is much better. A catchy song, a fascinating dance routine and he certainly has my ‘douze points’ (12 points and maximum). e Germany entry (Roman Lob) is pretty good too. e French song ‘Echo’ has a rather strange video and I couldn’t quite match the lyrics with the visuals. Will I watch the programme? Only if I have absolutely nothing else to do and that includes alternative viewing from a choice of approximately 500 Sky channels… Here’s hoping flood warnings are replaced with sunshine!... Happy Reading! Michelle If you have any comments please contact: Michelle@starcopywriting.com www.starcopywriting.com ■

EPPING BOOKSHOP VS WH SMITH TWO BOOKSHOPS IN EPPING HIGH STREET

and working relationship with our clients. For instance, we order a lot of books that can’t be obtained – or are second-hand or out of print. Our business is about books – we love books – working with them – supplying our customers with books and more especially – developing a child’s interest and enthusiasm for reading. Plus free tea and coffee – we have a special coffee corner which is very popular and a lovely little respite. MH: You mention your loyal customers – what other incentives are there? LC: We have a Customer Card which is wonderful. All customers (who have this card) have it stamped with every £10 purchase. When there are six stamps, customers will receive a £5 discount off their next purchase. So far, we have given back between £5,000- £6,000! Our customers appreciate the value. Also we ensure that the parking is good so people are comfortable visiting the shop. We understand the importance of selling other things – this is essential to survive in today’s climate, so we offer other novelty items of interest to the local area.

Words: Michelle Harris

R

eminiscent of the film ‘You’ve Got Mail’ with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, Epping has its own version: a small shop’s survival against a massive book retailer. Lorna Clark, owner of the Epping Bookshop for the last 33 years, is not happy: WH Smith has just opened a book shop in the same High Street. Feeling there isn’t enough business for two shops, she is determined to maintain her position. Epping Bookshop is already established, offers incredible discounts, extra benefits and more especially, caters to the local and loyal community.

Epping Bookshop is a true gem in the High Street. With this much enthusiasm for the industry, it is always a pleasure to buy books, from people who care - have an opinion and can make recommendations. I wish Epping Bookshop lots of luck and hope they can retain their prized presence on the High Street. Independent Bookshop of the Year Award 2007, 2008 and 2009 South East region finalists.

MH: What are comments from customers about WH Smith opening in the same street? LC: at WH Smith is not an independent bookshop. MH: What else do you offer aside books? LC: We recently went to Birmingham Gift Fair to source new lines. Stocking gifts, jigsaws, we’ve commissioned pictures of Epping Forest, retro pictures on mugs which can ONLY be bought at our shop. WH Smith cannot offer these extra and exclusive lines. MH: And do you have special deals with major publishers? LC: Yes. Penguin deals such as 3 for 2 in the classics and new jacketed books. We have an agreement with Collins for GEMS, and as part of our incentive to retain our loyal clientele, we regularly discount hardbacks and for the last 10 years, we have had discount weekends where people can buy 20% off any book in stock. We have a database of over 1,000 customers and we regularly host author events. MH: Do you have a stock of classics? And how long does it take to order a book from you? LC: We have an excellent core stock of classics. When we order, the book is delivered the following day whereas with WHS – it may take longer. MH: What about customer service? As an independent book store, do you feel your customer service is better? LC: Yes and definitely. We have had staff for 20-30 years. We are experienced within the trade. We all feel a great affinity with books and go that extra mile to ensure a great customer service

AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH CARL BELLE A LOCAL MEMBER OF THE COMMUNITY - WHO HELPS TO INSPIRE OTHERS

CARL BELLE

Words: Michelle Harris

C

arl Belle owns the local franchise of Belvoir Lettings, based in Gants Hill. Modest, quiet and reserved, he is also highly approachable and widely respected within his professional capacity as a local, letting agent. Yet despite his relaxed demeanour, Carl, through his church and because of his conscience and sense of purpose, gives hope to those who need support, guidance and inspiration… MH: Having heard your 10 minutes session at Chigwell Business Group, I was fascinated to learn about your voluntary work as part of FCENS (Forest Churches Emergency Night Shelter). Tell me more about this work and how it started? CB: I was at church and they were looking for volunteers for the night shelter. Not enough men were getting involved because it necessitated staying the night. So I volunteered for the shifts that nobody else wanted to do. I felt as if I wanted to give something back. MH: And do you think there is a link between your professional work and the homeless? 18

M AY 2 0 1 2

CB: Absolutely. You meet people that you can help – and sometimes those you can’t. With this work, it enables me to extend myself to help those, I can’t help professionally. ere are people living out of black bags: they need real help, food, shelter, somewhere to sleep. ings we take for granted like keeping clean, a roof… (Carl pauses for thought) somewhere to feel safe and secure… Sadly, the shelter should be temporary, but sometimes you see the same people, year after year. In reality, it should be just a step, not a lifestyle. But nobody should judge – especially in this current, economic climate. MH: How is this work through the church? CB: Some of the most important fundamentals of Christianity are to be kind and understanding. We shouldn’t label somebody because of their situation – just help them if they need it. My business sphere gives me certain opportunities but my work through the church, helps me to embrace higher and more spiritual ideals which enrich my life, on a different level. MH: You also support the Prison Ministry. Can you tell me about this work? CB: ere are two ministries.

CARL BELLE AND BELVOIR

One is for young offenders – so for this one, we go to Rochester Prison. We will have a normal church service and we try to make a connection without preaching. We listen to the men talk – give hope… ey are young offenders aged 17-21. We shouldn’t write them off at such a young age. ere’s a lot of negativity in prison – we try and inspire them to want a better life – to learn from their mistakes and to hear something positive – that they should want more and better for their futures. MH: Who inspires you with this work? CB: Des Brown, the youth pastor who organises the

prison ministry. He was there as a young offender but was given hope and from this, he was able to turn his life around. He now helps others. He’s my inspiration and it is a privilege to work alongside him. FCENS is a collaboration of six local churches in Waltham Forest and the Christian Kitchen. To speak to Carl direct – he can be reached at this office: Belvoir Ilford 440 Cranbrook Road Gants Hill Ilford Essex IG2 6LL. Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET APPRECIATING THE MOMENT

H

aving been an enthusiastic golfer for the past 30 years and had the pleasure of playing with several Ryder Cup players, two of which were number one in the world rankings, the one thing golf has taught me is that nothing is forever. No matter how good things seem to be going there is always that bad shot or poor putt that can bring you back to earth. e main thing is to be grateful for the times things are going well and as I lecture constantly to my family – appreciate the moment. It was lovely to see our office favorite Ronnie O’Sullivan’s brilliance if not genius return last week when winning his 4th world championship and particularly warming to hear him repeat my very words of how he was ‘appreciating the moment’. Let’s hope it is a mantra that will remain with him for a long time. I apply this attitude in business too, which helps me enormously to adjust to disappointment. As you will appreciate in my business we have many disappointments but unlike some, we are not just disappointed when sales do not proceed to full fruition, we are disappointed in the reaction of some people in general. Bearing in mind, as with all agents, we are only paid in the event of success. ere is never any charge for our advice and thereby all who approach us for this receive the benefit of our experience free and totally without obligation. It is therefore most disappointing when certain people not only go back on their word or renege on their

CHIGWELL-£1,500,000

REPTON PARK-£1,295,000

CHIGWELL-£795,000

promises but fail to apologize for having done so or, in the case of several potential clients recently, blatantly ignore our calls and emails requesting some justification for their deceit or rudeness! It is extremely tempting for me to name and shame these individuals here and now or through Facebook and Twitter but in negative terms I will wait to savor that moment. Now with that little moan

out of the way let’s take a look at what’s going on in our little local property world. What we call stock, that is the numbers of properties for sale or to let at a given time, is far below our usual numbers for this time of year. I would say that we are down by a good 50% in both property registers. As the only local agents with a sole agency only policy for properties for sale, (even if it’s only for as little as four weeks) our property register is always fewer than that of our fellow agents. e benefit of this policy to us is that everyone looking for a local home must visit our website in order that they do not miss out a section of the market. e astute

sellers recognize this as they also understand that we have more time to devote to marketing their home and that we can continue to regularly advertise the property until a sale results. is only applies of course to sales. For with lettings our terms are the same as any other letting agents. Because all types of property are now in short supply prices are holding up and although many owners are sticking firm to their quoted prices, there are, however, several who are ‘taking a view’. ey are prepared to listen to realistic offers enabling them to complete their plans and move and get on with their lives. Which after all was the initial purpose of the exercise. Others, who are still quoting figures in line with their over optimistic opinions of value, are hoping that the next two months which have been historically known as prime selling time, will encourage those actively seeking a new home to take a more bullish view. Let’s hope that they are right. In this day and age, however, as a gambler I certainly would not bet on it. As a golfer however I would be happy to play them for money at any time. Here Comes summer at Coopersale Hall sCHool

C

oopersale Hall, Epping’s leading private prep school, can’t wait for the summer to finally arrive so that the children can make full use of the marvellous grounds. Set in some ten acres and surrounded by beautiful Green Belt land, the children are fortunate to have a range of play areas, including a large Astroturf area, multi-use playground complete with equipment, adventure playground, terraced lawns and a large sports field. Use of the outdoor spaces has become a key part of the curriculum in subjects such as Geography, Science, Ecology and Environmental Studies. Recently the five year olds have been growing seeds and watching them germinate. A full range of vegetables is grown in the garden and at the end of the Summer Term they are prepared by the catering team for children to eat with absolutely zero food miles! e nature trail and pond exploration areas are developing, with bug hunts and pond dipping favourites with the children. e School Hall has seen a new Fencing club, the ‘Mini Musketeers’ start this term, in addition to the already long list of over 40 different before and after school clubs and activities. Summer Terms are always busy, with many festivals to celebrate and important days in the calendar to mark. Not to mention the Olympics and the Queens Jubilee. Look out for the Coopersale Hall maypole dancers at the Epping Town Fair on Sunday 17 June - the ninth year the children will have shown off their skills to the town. e prestigious Celebration of the Year Prize Giving takes place in a large marquee in the grounds and will be attended by proud parents, grandparents and friends of the school. is event looks back over the year and celebrates the progress and many achievements of the children, and this year will mark the record level of offers to top senior schools by our Year 6 pupils as they near the end of their time at Coopersale Hall. e annual Summer Fayre, run by Coopersale Hall’s extremely supportive Parents Association, will take place on Sunday 8 July on the terrace lawn. All local residents are invited to what promises to be a fun summer’s afternoon. Further details will be appearing on the website in due course ■

eing at home is such an easy option. Television, Xbox, playing on computer, DVDs, SKPYE, so many reasons not to go out or be part of the community… It is a fact that children are getting obese through lack of exercise and that feeling of ‘community spirit’ is not the same as the 1950s, 1960s or even 1970s. Most people keep to themselves and unfortunately, a lot of us don’t even know our neighbours! Getting out, socialising (especially for youngsters) is so important and not just at school. For mothers with new babies too, despite the hassle of getting out of the house (and there is no denying, it’s a stressful procedure!) is essential. Both for the well-being of the mother, to give respite from being at home with a baby/child but to also spend time, sharing experiences with other women in a similar position.

ROYDON MARINA VILLAGE ONE YEAR ON THE 315 BERTH MARINA AT ROYDON MARINA VILLAGE HAS NOW BEEN OPEN FOR ITS FIRST YEAR. OVER THE PAST 12 MONTHS NEARLY HALF OF THE MOORINGS HAVE BEEN FILLED AND A VIBRANT COMMUNITY HAS DEVELOPED AMONGST THE BERTH HOLDERS.

T

he 315 berth marina at Roydon Marina Village has now been open for its first year. Over the past 12 months nearly half of the moorings have been filled and a vibrant community has developed amongst the berth holders. Impressed by the tranquil settings and excellent facilities many are still surprised to find they even exist in this part of rural Essex. Approached by a road that runs alongside the Stort Navigation, abundant with wildlife, the first glimpse of the park is an old mill house, now converted into flats, and a weir pool. Follow the road around to the car park and you will find their hotel and “Hendersons”, the on site bar and restaurant. Roydon Marina Village has undergone extensive development over the last couple of years which has cost in the region of £10M. e “Village” is part of a collection of holiday lodges, residential properties and inland marina berths. Owners are also invited to make full use of the onsite facilities such as laundrette, hotel, bar, restaurant and waterside cafe. e 315 berth marina is set in 65 acres of tranquil countryside and is accessed through the newest lock on the Stort Navigation in over 100 years. Set on a 32 acre lake amongst the stunning scenery of the Lee Valley Park on the Stort Navigation, Roydon Marina Village is fast becoming known as the Premier Marina for inland waterways users in the South East. Boasting a range of first class facilities and friendly, enthusiastic staff dedicated to ensuring that every berth holder enjoys their time at the marina it becomes plain to see why so many short term visitors decide to move their boats there full time. Moorings are available for Cruisers, Narrow Boats, Wide Beams and Dutch Barges and are available for overnight stays through to full time annual berths.

UNLIKE MANY OTHER HOLIDAY PARKS ROYDON MARINA VILLAGE IS OPEN ALL YEAR ROUND AND PROVIDES OWNERS WITH A HOLIDAY HOME THEY CAN USE 365 DAYS PER YEAR! OWNERS CAN ALSO ENJOY EXCLUSIVE FISHING RIGHTS ON THE 32 ACRE LAKE, BUSTLING WITH MANY HUGE FRESHWATER BEAUTIES LIKE CARP, TENCH AND PIKE. At the entrance to the park is Roydon station, only 30 minutes from London by train, so for many, with the tranquil settings and peaceful environment, abundant with wildlife, it is the perfect get away from the

32

hustle and bustle of modern living. e marina started life as farm land which was excavated in the 1970’s to provide stone for motorway construction in the surrounding areas. When the quarrying came to an end in the late 1980’s the quarry was flooded by cutting channels from the bottom end of the lake to join the nearby River Stort. For the next 20 years the lake was used for swimming, fishing, water skiing, leisure boat trips and clay pigeon shooting. At one time it also had an artificial beach and paddling pool. Construction of the marina started in October 2010 and was finished by the end of February 2011. As part of the extensive re-development a new holiday home village has been created with a range of show homes available to view seven days a week. Usually the plots are purchased off plan and the experienced staff at Roydon Marina Village are able to source your perfect holiday home from any of the major UK suppliers. All properties are bespoke built and supplied fully furnished including sofas, beds, wardrobes, white goods and dining furniture. All aspects of the home are fully customisable with respect to specification, layout, size and number of bedrooms. Prices suit a wide range of budgets and homes can be ready to move into in as little as 8 weeks from when you first place the order (depending on specification). e holiday properties provide owners with a great opportunity for a secure long term investment, offering an average return per week of £500 and even more at peak times. Roydon Marina Village sublet department can offer a superb full rental service meaning that a £160,000 home can return £11,200 per annum (amounts may vary dependant on whether or not you holiday in the home or rent it out all year round). “Hendersons” is the on site bar and restaurant serving food seven nights a week and lunch on Saturdays and Sunday roasts. Popular as a meeting place for everyone on park the relaxed but lively atmosphere attracts regular visitors from the local village of Roydon and further afield. Especially popular are the Friday night Fish and Chip specials and the weekend live entertainments featuring an array of talented singers, bands and comedy acts. Tanya Marshall ,”Hendersons” complex manager , says “e continuing rise in popularity of “Hendersons” as a venue is down to the atmosphere that has been created by having a menu that delivers high quality food at sensible prices and a team who are dedicated to creating a warm and welcoming environment whilst providing top levels of customer service.” “Hendersons” is also becoming well known as a wedding venue since being awarded a license for performing ceremonies last year. ere are a number of packages available to suit all budgets and some unique features that no other venue can offer. A favourite amongst brides to be is arriving on the park by boat and then having the wedding photos taken around the marina with the vibrant colours of the boats in the background. To bring a perfect end to your day Roydon Marina Village is also able to provide you with first class accommodation ranging from the bridal suite in the hotel to a luxury log cabin with hot tub and plenty of accommodation for your guests as well. A Wedding Venue Open Day is being held on Sunday 20th May from 10.00 am – 8.00pm where you will be able to see various displays of what is available for you special day. “Hendersons” is also available for many other functions including birthdays, christenings, engagement parties and wakes. e function suite at “Hendersons” is also available for corporate entertainment, training days and conferences. e hotel and holiday lodges on the park are available to book all year round with prices starting at £45 per night for a room, perfect for when you are visiting one of their functions or for when visiting London or the surrounding areas. Fancy having a look around; why not get in contact with them? Staff are always on hand to show you around the park and explain your different options. T THE MONACO GRANDPRIX

he magic of Monaco will truly be in evidence from the 24th May when this beautiful Principality hosts formula One’s 70th Grand Prix. In the words of Graham Hill, it’s the only Grand Prix where you meet lamp-posts, trees, nightclubs, houses, hotels, curbs, gutters and boats. For one glorious weekend in May Monaco becomes a festival of style, colour and ear-splitting noise, blended with glamourous members of the ‘jet set’ and stars of screen and stage. Remember, Cannes Film Festival is in full swing just along the coast and is the perfect warm-up act for Monaco’s Grand Prix. We especially love Monaco during this week because it just doesn’t sleep and its vibrant atmosphere after the excitement of the racing keeps on going. Stunning cocktails, fabulous restaurants, dancing and people watching all come to the fore, but what has been missing until 2012 has been a beach party. Thankfully this year the secluded beach at Larvotto will play host to the exclusive Crazy Bear Beach Party. champagne will be flowing, along with great barbecue food,, and guests will be dancing to Boy George’s DJ set, Shuffler,The brilliant Fun lovin Criminals and Eddie Jordan on drums with his band the Robbers. All this in addition to fire, Vaudeville and burlesque dancers. What more could we ask for? Entry to this epitome of chic is on a strictly ticket only basis and numbers are limited. You need to be a part of this night to remember – I have seen what the guys at Crazy Bear are capable of and I really wouldn’t want to miss it.

mellow vibes heating up the dance floor until the late hours. e real excitement however comes Friday night at 10pm with a stunning world-first planned by Sandpolo Events and Airstar lighting. As the curtain of night drops across the waters of Poole bay the arena will be illuminated by giant ethereal balloons of glowing light, suspended in the air as if by magic. International polo players will then stage a stunning display of gladiatorial night polo set against a backdrop like no other. Of all the elements new to e Asahi Championships 2012 this is the one that promises to be the most breathtaking. Culminating in a dramatic climax to the championships, the final teams will go head to head on Saturday afternoon to win the coveted first place spot. anks to the award winning Mayfair club Amika, Saturday’s guests can then get down to partying the night away and rubbing shoulders with polo players, VIP’s and

celebrities at the ‘Beach Party e Polo’ with live music and International House DJ Colin “StarRocker” Pereira. is exhilarating two-day event promises to be a non-stop feast for the sensations. Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR TECHNOLOGY IN DENTISTRY At Smile Design By Ash, I have created one of the most technologically advanced dental practices possible. A lot of thought, effort and energy has gone in to achieving this for one simple reason – that any patient treated by us will have comfortable, high quality dentistry that will be long lasting. Let me review some of the key items of equipment we use to benefit patients. CT SCANNER & DIGITAL X-RAYS We have installed one of the latest and best large digital X-ray machines with a built in CT Scanner. A large X-ray is very useful in assessing the dental condition when you first visit us. We also have digital X-ray systems in the treatment rooms. is technology means that the radiation dose is at a minimum, and the X-ray results are instant. e accurate X-ray images are viewed and stored on our computers. ere are only a handful of UK practices that have a CT Scanner. We have a state-of-the-art CT Scanner that is very useful in planning for implant dentistry. e key is to measure your bone very accurately regarding the width and height available. ere are also delicate anatomical structures such as nerves (lower jaw at the back) and sinuses (upper jaws at the back), which are visualized in 3 dimensions on a CT Scan image. Because of this technology, we can accurately select the strongest implants for you, thereby allowing for a long lasting result and safe placement of the implants in more difficult areas.

STRAUMANN IMPLANT SYSTEM We only use the Straumann Implant System, which is one of the leading implant systems in the world. Straumann are supported by ITI, which has probably done more research and development than any other organization in the world in the field of dental implants. By using the best implants and related equipment allows us to deliver the optimum, long lasting results for our clients. So you can feel safe and confident in having teeth replaced with implants, and we assure you the actual treatment is comfortable. LASERS We are proud to be one of the very few Practices in the country that have two types of laser machines specifically for use in dentistry. I have been on some of the leading laser courses in the world, and I am a recognized laser trainer in the UK. Lasers are used in many ways - the treatment is safe, painless, and effective. Benefits of Laser Treatment ● Fillings without injections or drilling! ● Gummy Smile correction: A “gum lift” or reshaping of gum lines can be done non-surgically (i.e. no incisions or stitches) ● Modern approach to treating gum disease ● Fast, efficient and painless ● Excellent healing of tissues There are many other applications for laser dentistry including: ● Smile Makeovers: Lasers are perfect for creating even gum lines to create the most attractive smile possible. ● Treatment of painful ulcers.

Uncovering tissue above wisdom teeth for improved health and hygiene (avoids extraction of these teeth, and repeat wisdom teeth infections). Root canal treatment (the anti bacterial effect of laser energy ensures successful, longer lasting root canal fillings). Implant dentistry: After implants have healed up, the gum tissue above them can be quickly and painlessly removed at the restorative stage of treatment. Fraenectomy: Removal of the muscle fold for improved gum health, or in the treatment of “tongue-tie”.

JOINT VIBRATION ANALYSIS AND T SCAN Using sophisticated computer software called Joint Vibration Analysis ( JVA), we check the health of your jaw joints. is is often NOT checked by many dentists, and yet is the key to long-term success in dentistry. Your bite is also analyzed by advanced computer diagnostic equipment (T Scan). is gives us a precise understanding of how your teeth glide over each other and also if you have a harmful bite pattern. Very few UK dentists use this sophisticated technology. T Scan will ensure you have comfortable, long lasting dentistry and is great for patients who suffer from headaches and bite related problems.

specifically. ey are then inspected using a magnifying viewer. After this they go in to a washer/disinfector machine. e instruments are then placed in special sterilization pouches and sterilized in the latest autoclave machine. is time consuming and precise regime ensures 100% cleanliness and sterility – and peace of mind for you! THE DENTAL DRILLS e specialist drills we purchased are from one of the leading manufacturers in the world. e drills are the very latest technology with built in fiber-optic lights. is ensures excellent improved vision for the dentist by increased illumination in dark areas of the mouth, as well as smooth and comfortable drilling. Using our digital wireless headphones and the ability for you to select any music album in the world, will ensure the dental noise of drilling will no longer be a distraction for you! If you would like a Practice Tour, meet our Team or see me for a FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION, please phone Petya who is our Patient Coordinator on 020 85000544, or visit our informative website www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk.

JOIN THE BIGGEST FIGHT AGAINST CANCER THIS SUMMER WITH

RACE FOR LIFE 2012

C

ANCER Research UK is urging women and girls from across the UK to gather friends and family and join the biggest fight against cancer by taking part in Race for Life 2012. Everyone can help beat over 200 types of cancer and help more men and women to survive this awful disease that affects more than one in three people in the UK. Whatever age or fitness level, women can walk, jog or run 5k at over 235 Race for Life events across the UK. For those looking for a bit more of a challenge, there is also a 10k route available at 25 venues.

CANCER SURVIVAL RATES HAVE DOUBLED IN THE PAST 40 YEARS AND CANCER RESEARCH UK’S WORK HAS BEEN AT THE HEART OF THIS PROGRESS. Emma Gilbert, head of Race for Life, said: “Every two minutes someone in the UK is told they have cancer. It touches so many lives and the back signs worn by everyone taking part are a moving reminder that women are taking part to celebrate lives that have been saved, but also sadly lives that have been lost. We are asking women to unite, take part in the biggest fight against cancer, and raise money for Cancer Research UK’s life-saving work into all types of cancers, because it is ‘all of us v cancer’ and together we can help more people survive.” 40

M AY 2 0 1 2

Women get involved for many different reasons. Some are cancer survivors, while others want to celebrate or remember the lives of family, friends or loved ones. Others simply want to come together, have a great day and raise money. Family and friends play an important part in Race for Life - many volunteer at events, help with fundraising or simply cheer on their loved ones on the day. Since it began in 1994, an incredible six million participants have taken part in Race for Life raising a massive £457 million to fund Cancer Research UK’s vital work. In 2012, Cancer Research UK hopes to raise £55 million. Cancer survival rates have doubled in the past 40 years and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of this progress. But there’s still much to be done and the money raised through Race for Life, will help save even more lives. You can join in at the following venues taking place locally to youBRENTWOOD 26TH MAY EPPING 11TH JULY

SEVEN STEPS TO LOOKING YOUNGER AND ACHIEVING FACIAL BALANCE

cheek definition, there are 9 superficial fat compartments within the face, when we age we lose fat from these areas at different rates, for instance on the ‘apple of the cheek’ we tend to lose fat , but hold it well in-between the cheek and nose area, that is when we start you see nose to mouth lines appear. Fillers such as hyaluronic acid, calcium and poly lactic acid can all help to reshape and define the shelf of the face. ink of it as the area that keeps the lower face from sagging! STEP 2 eyebrow shape and curve in a woman is very important to project a youthful eye area, it helps to frame the face and lift the brow. Muscle relaxing injections can be given as a non surgical brow lift, and can take flat eyebrows and brow to a lifted more opened eye , more room to apply your make up, shaping your eyebrows with threading or waxing is important ad is semi permanent makeup for those who have lost the pigment or have over plucked their brows. STEP 3 forehead lifting, using muscle relaxing injections to lift the frontalis muscles and stop the brow from looking heavy, will give a younger smoother forehead, dermal fillers can be used instead of muscle relaxing injections or in conjunction, to give the brow and forehead a lift could the sunrise technique, which lifts and rejuvenates the forehead and brow area.

hen looking at a face and trying to make it balanced or more attractive to the eye, mathematics and artistry play an important part in this process. Leonardo da Vinci stated ‘man is proportionate’ when developing drawings on the human form. Furthermore

as an aesthetic consultant, taking into consideration actors such as ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ have to be taken into consideration to help achieve a person reach the goals they have set for themselves in the way they would like to look. STEP 1 looking at a person’s

STEP 4 opening and hydrating the eye area, again if crow’s feet are a problem, muscle relaxing injections can soften the area, furthermore the under eye area often looks tired and dark circles and rings under the eye are a problem. e new eye dermal roller with unique serums to combat the tired look, help to lift the eyes, soften crepey lines and drain fluid, fresher eyes are always more youthful! STEP 5 balance of the nose, in the centre of our face and a

prominent feature, noses that are crooked, too downturned all can spoil the facial balance, surgery is one option, but there are also some non surgical treatments that can help, for noses that look crooked fillers can help balance and disguise this problem, downturned noses can have muscle relaxing injections to lift the tip slightly as well as being able to treated flared nostrils. STEP 6 lips, as we age the outline of our lips called the vermillion border starts to break down, causing lipstick to bleed and making the mouth appear aged, using products to redefine this are without making them more volumised is possible, people e are often scared of having the trout pout look, most women only want their lips to appear fresher, more hydrated and defined, if people have a weak top lip, then slight volume can correct this in balance, furthermore lots more men are going for fresher lip fillers to hydrate only! STEP 7 youthful bright skin, let’s face it if you look at a baby or young Childs skin, it’s pretty amazing, plump, full and un flawed, even skin tone. So remember if you only have fillers and muscle relaxing injections the face is never going to look amazing until you help with problems such as fine lines, open pores, pigmentation, brown spots, red broken veins and uneven skin surface. Dermal rollers, skin peels, microdermabrasion and intense pulsed light all can help with these problems, furthermore using skin care and daily spf protector will prevent these problems from occurring and keep your skin glowing. N NICOLA’S FANGS DISAPPEAR Words: Christine Baker

o one would know that attractive and youthful looking Nicola Smith had battled with what she calls her ‘fangs’ all her life. Confident Nicola, a woman about town who runs a demanding insurance business, had been self conscious about her teeth since childhood. en she met cosmetic dentist Ash Parmar. “I think I always knew that I should have worn a brace for the two canines which stuck out from my top teeth but somehow they got overlooked by the dentists I visited. en, when I was 17, I was told I needed a brace. It was a bolt out of the blue. You can imagine my response at that age - not a chance in hell.” So for many years Nicola got on with her life, all the time hiding the deep resentment she felt about her wayward teeth. en along came Ash who attended the Chigwell Business Group, a local breakfast club, while work was being carried out on Smile Design by Ash, his state of the art cosmetic dental practice in Chigwell.

CONVENTIONAL ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT FOR ADULTS CAN TAKE TWO YEARS OR MORE BUT SMILE DESIGN BY ASH OFFERS THE REVOLUTIONARY 6 MONTH SMILES SYSTEM THAT ACHIEVES STRAIGHT TEETH MUCH FASTER.

NICOLA SMITH AND THE 'FANGS'

Nicola, a regular at the Business Breakfast Club, was delighted when she heard Ash talk about 6 month smiles and how the process is easy and comfortable. “I switched on straight away. At last I had found a way to get these blasted teeth fixed.” Nicola visited the practice where Ash talked her through the process explaining that crooked teeth make many people feel self-conscious, reserved, or even ashamed of their appearance. Conventional orthodontic treatment for adults can take two years or more but Smile Design by Ash offers the revolutionary 6 Month Smiles system that achieves straight teeth much faster. e 6 Month Smile process utilises tooth coloured wires and clear brackets to gently straighten teeth in an average time of only six months. e key feature of the treatment is the special nickel titanium wires used. Using gentle forces, teeth are aligned smoothly just like magic! 6 Months Smiles treatments use tooth-coloured braces that are barely visible. e wires are usually tooth-coloured as well. ese are nothing like the classic ‘train-track” metal braces. Some amazing before and after pictures sealed the deal and after checking the health of Nicola’s teeth the treatment started. “e brace was fitted so during that time I used a manual toothbrush and brush sticks. ere really wasn’t much discomfort but I did become obsessed with looking in the mirror every day. I could see how much in line my teeth were becoming. I had monthly checks - no teeth were taken out and at the end some cosmetic contouring on one of the canine teeth which had become slightly smaller than we wanted. I had teeth whitening too.” By January Nicola was ready for her make over pictures which are provided as part of the service. “e pictures were great and I am really pleased with the whole experience. I used to hold back whenever a camera was around and never keen to smile. Now I am more relaxed and can enjoy myself. What’s six months of my life to look and feel this good? Ash is my hero!” ■

I

have just been asked to take part in a television programme concerning the life and work of omas Chippendale. Organised by a team of charming young people I was at first dismayed at the banality of the questions I had to answer but soon realised that research was needed for me to answer them concisely and to provide the information they knew the audience would want to receive. Rather like the Delia Smith situation when she brilliantly recognised that there was a large group of people who did not know how to boil an egg. So research I had to do and in the course of that a couple of extraordinary events or more accurately discoveries were made. About a year ago I sat with a colleague and watched with interest how he surfed the internet searching through catalogues of auction sales. I don’t remember the last time I bought anything at auction – my supply of fine antiques comes directly from private ownership – and I certainly wouldn’t buy anything without seeing it. However, my chum pointed out a sale in the North of England where there were several quite good-looking pieces. One was a pole screen with a needlework banner. It was described as mid-18th century and indeed it looked to be so. Catching the infectious enthusiasm as he was busily phoning through his bid prices to the auction house I ventured that I would gamble the auctioneer’s upper estimate because I like pole screens, although they are the devil to sell. It was with mixed feelings that learned later that my bid had been successful and I was the proud owner of the said screen and had to drive north for three hours to collect it. Worse still, when I saw it I was disappointed. e needlework looked patched, the stand was plain and the only redeeming feature in my eyes was a panel of early 18th c. Chinese wallpaper used as a backing. When I took it apart the needlework was in fact not patched and the colours were

46

M AY 2 0 1 2

John Bly CONRAN BOOK CHAIR

good, and the stand responded well to a wax. So out it went on display. Now back to my research. ere are many reference books on Chippendale but the ones acknowledged as the most reliable are those by Christopher Gilbert. Flicking through the illustrated part of his e Life and Work of omas Chippendale I happened upon ‘Screens’ and there, believe it or not, was my screen. I actually owned a piece of furniture by the great man. Imagine the elation. Not so much a financial gain as more an academic ‘find’; a missing piece of history which hopefully soon now will be appropriately housed, curated and on display for all to see. I was actually looking for images of chairs, of a sort frequently associated with Chippendale and so much illustrated in his Gentleman & Cabinet Maker’s Director. I have long been associated with such a chair – illustrated – and always considered it to be c. 1755 and after Chippendale.

(However precisely the same in design and execution to a proven Chippendale piece, unless there is documentation such as invoices or delivery receipts as evidence of provenance, one can never claim definite origins of a piece of furniture being Chippendale’s workshop.) is chair has one distinctive feature at the back of each front foot, a curious little crest created by the swept back scroll from the front and to date by repute known as peculiar to one designer, Matthias Lock but I had never put time into checking all available material. In the further course of my searches, I was scanning some images from the collection in the Victoria & Albert Museum when I saw a drawing of a chair, not by Chippendale but Lock, and there clearly shown is that same little crest. Lock was a prominent designer and maker and his drawings pre-date the publication of Chippendale’s Director. His designs are considered stronger than Chippendale but he was certainly a disciple by the 1750’s, subsequently working successfully in the classical style of Robert Adam in contrast to the high-style rococo for which

he is better known. Now happy that I have convincing evidence of an earlier date for the chair than originally thought I remembered that it is also illustrated in Judith Miller’s latest definitive volume entitled Chairs. is is a highly recommendable book containing lavish illustrations and notes on over 100 of Judith’s favourite chairs from 1640 – 2007. e trouble with research is that you get sidetracked and I started to reflect on one of the questions I had to answer for the TV programme which was “ How did seat furniture affect us socially?” Well of course it didn’t. We affected it. Chairs, settees, sofas and couches were designed to fit our body shapes but more importantly to accommodate the clothes we wore and so, chairs in particular, mirrored our fashion, style and deportment more accurately than any other item in the course of our modern history. A mid-18th century chair with its wide seat, broad back and scrolling legs reflects the wide frock coats or hooped dresses and general ‘look’ of the period whereas a chair of the 1790’s with its delicate narrow seat and back and slender legs were properly suited to the gentler behaviour and thinner clothes of the neo-classical era. And so we get diverted to climate change, for the wearing by women of diaphanous ‘Empire line’ dresses could only have been practical in a warmer climate than we had had in England until the 1780’s. But it did warm up, and for a decade we saw such heat waves as enabled classical poses to be adopted, such as reclining on a sofa, a position quite impossible as well as undignified, in a hooped skirt. And so a table was designed to pull over the end of the sofa, and the sofa table was born, thanks to climate change. Now you know that if you are offered a George II sofa table – it cannot be. So I remain most grateful to the young people who put those seemingly banal questions to me, I’ve learnt a lot ■

t Leisure Plan’s showroom in Stansted Mountfitchet, you will find the greatest selection of contemporary outdoor furniture imaginable. The stunning display is a surprising contrast to the converted old chapel (1836) which houses the complete Leisure Plan organisation. Back in the early 80’s Leisure Plan’s founder and owner Chris McCormack set up his company with the express intention of bringing the very best of European outdoor furniture design to the UK. Since then Leisure Plan’s portfolio of high quality, distinctively designed collections have established the company at the very top of the market for outdoor living. Leisure Plan is the exclusive partner to the three most highly rated luxury outdoor furniture brands and market leaders in Europe and many other world markets. DEDON – the originator and undisputed world leader in hand-woven fibre. EGOparis- French design flair with the largest colour range of any outdoor furniture manufacturer. FISCHER MOBEL – German precision using the highest grade modern materials. All three brands are winners of the prestigious Red Dot Award, worldwide recognition from a panel of independent judges with a knowledge and passion for contemporary design and quality. The strongest endorsement of Leisure Plan’s skill in identifying good design with product reliability, offering complete comfort and satisfaction. From Dedon comes the latest introductions of Mu, an imaginative and versatile modular system, adaptable to a variety of configurations and layouts. This offers a hugely versatile combination through the range of

Outdoor Luxury sofas, daybeds ,benches , coffee and side tables. Less formal but equally distinctive is the new SeaX foldable director style chair from the French designer Jean-Marie Massaud. Distinguished by the attention to detail, the combination of materials, textures and colours gives this collection an air of sophistication, whilst maintaining the simplicity of function. Colour has an individual language. EGOparis has an extensive colour palette with over 20 choices of powdercoated aluminium frames, combined with 16 colours of high-tensile polyester mesh slings. Manufactured entirely in France, the designs are based around conviviality, informality and the chance to create an individual outdoor ‘look’. From the new innovative KUBE – (each single piece converts into either a sunlounger, chair or coffee table) – through the TANDEM range including a sunlounger that is now a design classic, to the highly versatile KAMA which can change function simply by moving the cushions One of the most highly respected German outdoor furniture manufacturers of the past 50years, Fischer Mobel’s reputation for minimalist design in the highest grade materials – stainless steel- aluminium- ceramic/granite/glass has given this brand an enviable reputation for long lasting, highly durable collections. LODGE is a modular lounge system designed around the simplest of concepts - a square base unit with easily interchangeable backs and armrests according to individual preference. The rounded stainless steel frames of the TAKU collection gives the stackable chairs a real practicality, and when combined with the single catch flip-top table, makes this elegant style suitable for any location where space is at a premium. PROFESSIONAL DRY ORGANIC CARPET CLEANING & UPHOLSTERY CLEANING BONE-DRY THE ULTIMATE IN DRY CARPET CLEANING Have you ever worried about cleaning your expensive wool carpets? Worried about your carpets shrinking or loosing its sparkle and left wet for hours or even days? Bone-dry carpet cleaning has been successfully dry cleaning around your area over the last seven years with outstanding customer satisfaction and very high repeat rates and recommendations. We take care of your expensive carpets. Our DRY ORGANIC system his one of the safest cleaning method available in the carpet cleaning industry. Your carpet will stay looking at its best for much longer than using the conventional water based cleaning method. WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT e Bone-Dry organic carpet cleaning system was designed to overcome the problems with steam cleaning or hot water extraction. e first is over wetting. Steam cleaners are notorious for leaving carpets wet for days, even when professionally done. is can create a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, which can cause unpleasant odours. e second is the soapy, sticky residue that is left behind which causes your carpets to re-soil almost immediately. ese products contain detergents that not only have poor performance, but are harder to remove than the dirt itself. e dirt in any carpet is 85% dry soil which can be removed with vacuuming. We have championed this vacuum stage, as we believe it to be absolutely essential. SOME OF OUR CLIENTS TESTIMONIAL You rarely hear reviews from anyone who has just had their carpets wet cleaned, but our Bone-dry, dry organic system gets rave review over and over again "some of our client’s testimonial" My carpets look beautiful again! thank you so much for a really grate job, I will recommend you to friends and family. floorboards exposed, especially if you have neighbours underneath. See what the lease says because it may have clauses about wooden floors or causing a noise nuisance, which, of course, wooden floors can. One way to get round this is to propose installing special sound-absorbing underlay, which may be acceptable to the freeholder. In this situation, getting the wooden floor of your dreams could be a bit of a battle, but the end result will be worth it.

WALK ON WOOD G

et those jobs done with a little help from DIY guru Julia Gray. is month: how to install a wooden floor to add to the value of your home. Wooden floors are practical, look fantastic and help to sell homes because they have universal appeal. If you're lucky enough to have period floorboards in your home, you've got a head start, but if not, installing a wooden floor is easier than ever. Laminate flooring, which has a picture of wood printed on to the boards, used to be the easiest way to get the look, but laminate isn't as fashionable as it once was. If you want the real deal, the good news is that other types of wooden flooring are now as easy to install as laminate. Fitting real wooden flooring used to be tricky, but not any more. Boards that just click and fit together, with no nails, screws or glue required, are widely available. is applies to both engineered wood and solid wood flooring. Engineered wood has a layer of wood on top of the boards, but it doesn't go all the way through - there's a cheaper middle and

54

M AY 2 0 1 2

bottom layer. e thickness of the wood varies (usually between 0.6mm and 6mm), so make sure you know how thick it is and how many times, if any, it can be sanded. A floor that can be sanded a few times is a good investment because it can take more wear and tear. As lovely as solid wood is - and for some people, nothing else will do - engineered wood can be a more practical choice (both start from around the same price). Because engineered wood consists of layers, it has more strength and durability than a solid wood floor. It shouldn't shrink and expand when exposed to moisture and changes in temperature and humidity, unlike a solid wood floor. Most wooden flooring comes finished, sealed and ready to fit, but you can also get bare wood if you want to stain, wax, varnish or paint it yourself, either conventional floorboards (new, or reclaimed period ones) or, again, boards that click together for easy fitting. If your home's leasehold, you may have to get the freeholder's permission to fit wooden floors or have the original

PRODUCT OF THE MONTH DIYing can be dangerous - drilling through a cable or pipe can have catastrophic consequences. e new PMD 10 multi-detector, £79.99, Bosch (see www.bosch-do-it.co.uk), minimises the risk because it locates metal, cables and also wooden studs. A traffic-light system (and different modes) makes the PMD 10 really simple to use: green means 'nothing found', yellow means 'object nearby', and red means 'object found'. A ring around a hole on the detector lights up and when it's safe, you simply put your pencil through the hole and mark the wall - very clever. For extra safety, it makes a noise when it finds something, and also displays the information on its screen. e detector is extremely lightweight and has a big, comfy handle so you can glide it across the wall with ease. A must-have piece of kit. HOW-TO TIP Before sanding wooden floorboards, it's essential to bang down all the protruding nails. Use a nail punch or a hammer and offcut of wood, so you don't damage the boards. If you leave any nails sticking up, they'll break the sanding sheets on the industrial floor sander, which is annoying, time-consuming and expensive because you have to pay for each sheet you use. To start sanding, lift the sander drum off the floor and turn the machine on. is avoids damaging the boards and letting the sander get away with you - it's powerful, so be careful. Walk the sander steadily across the floor in a diagonal direction, but don't linger in one spot because you'll create ridges in the boards. When you turn the sander off, ensure that the drum has stopped before putting it down ■

Adding value & fun to your home A GARDEN ROOM CAN ADD VALUE TO YOUR PROPERTY AND MORE ENJOYMENT FROM OUTSIDE SPACE.

I

t has been an unseasonally warm March, and we are all hoping that summer is just around the corner and we can start looking forward to outside living. But if you are lucky enough to have a garden room or a gazebo you can enjoy garden living all year round. Not only that, but a garden room can add value to your home and increase your quality of life. Crown Pavilions manufacture a whole range of garden rooms which can feature outdoor kitchens or barbecues, sitting rooms with plasma screens, studies with storage and internet connection, screens or fold-back doors to protect you from the weather, mood lighting for evening entertainment, heating, hot tubs, home gyms. Crown Pavilions can create a wide range of buildings for a variety of requirements, all of which will enhance your use of outside space, whether it be leisurely breakfasts with the family early evening drinks with friends, lunches and dinners, or just a private, quiet sanctuary. One of the questions that often arises is whether planning permission is required. Luke explains, “A garden room should

be an extension of your home and you can put it wherever you want. In most cases our buildings would fall under permitted development. However in certain circumstances planning may be required. We always advise that you either contact your local planning officer, or why not let us do it for you. We provide a seamless hassle-free product and service from order to completion. “When we install a garden room we are especially mindful of the landscaping around it. Our sister company Crown Gardens, will look after every aspect of planting and creating a beautiful setting which fits in with your existing garden. The lighting and heating are also important, especially if you want to entertain in the evening. We take care of all that too. “ In an exciting development, for Chelsea Flower Show, Crown Pavilions is launching The Crown Duchess, a new garden room designed in partnership with the Duchess of Rutland. Working closely with the Duchess on every aspect of design and finish, Crown Pavilions has created a versatile, handcrafted garden room with elegant interiors that echo Belvoir Castle, the beautiful home of the Duchess of Rutland.

Evoque RANGE ROVER

SPECIAL EDITION WITH

Victoria Beckham MAKES GLOBAL DEBUT

L

and Rover and Victoria Beckham have unveiled a new bespoke luxurious, hand-finished Range Rover Evoque Special Edition. The exclusively design is the result of a collaboration between Land Rover Design, led by Gerry McGovern with Victoria Beckham, winner of the coveted Designer Brand of the Year award at the 2011 British Fashion Awards. Victoria was appointed Creative Design Executive in July 2010 and has worked with the Land Rover design team over the past 18 months to create her Special Edition. Victoria Beckham said: “I am very excited to be working with Land Rover as I have an enormous amount of respect for the brand. I’ve always driven a Range Rover, for me they are the epitome of quality and luxury. When I first started working with the team I did a lot of research, and created mood boards to show the team my love of timeless and classic design. I looked at yachts, luxury jets and classic cars. It’s the small detail that makes all the difference. I want everyone who gets into this car to feel special and empowered by its quality and craftsmanship. I like that it feels luxurious but also has quite a classic edge to it as well as a contemporary feel.” 3 M AY 2 0 1 2 5 9

Land Rover Design Director Gerry McGovern said: “The design of Evoque has truly captured the hearts of customers worldwide. Working with Victoria the intention was to create a Special Edition that extends its character in a new direction through understated, restrained colour and detail changes. Both Land Rover and Victoria Beckham are British luxury brands with credibility and global appeal, this dual ‘Britishness’ makes the collaboration even more exciting especially when considering the huge audience for bespoke products around the world. Working with Victoria we quickly recognised our similar design tastes and ambition for this car. For example at the first meeting, Victoria herself inspired the use of rose gold. She was wearing dark clothes and no jewellery apart from a rose gold,

60

man’s watch. I was struck by the juxtaposition of the masculine watch on a very elegant, feminine wrist. We both agreed it was the ideal way to introduce a softer touch to the bold, assertive exterior colour scheme.Throughout the process we were keen to ensure that the vehicle would appeal equally to both men and women, in fact Victoria always maintained that she wanted her husband David to be proud to drive this car. We fully enjoyed working with Victoria and I am confident this special edition will appeal to discerning luxury consumers globally.” Quintessential British luxury is a hallmark of both the Land Rover and Victoria Beckham brands. This Special Edition allows that impression to be further heightened through the use of the finest quality materials and

craftsmanship. Powered by the lightweight, all-aluminium 240PS 2.0-litre petrol engine the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition will be hand-finished by Land Rover’s Engineering to Order division (ETO) in Warwickshire. Essential to the design is the high quality hand-finished matt grey paint, unique 20” gloss black forged alloy wheels and luxurious rose-gold details, limited solely to this Special Edition. Complimenting the ultra-modern, stealth-like exterior is an elegant and luxurious interior. The sport design four-seats are finished in a semi-aniline Vintage Tan leather, with a bold ‘baseball’ stitch detail chosen by Victoria as a tongue-in-cheek reference to her sporting husband David. The same leather is also used to cover the door inserts, arm rests and central storage box lid. Another personal touch are the exclusive and ultra-luxurious floor mats. The designer explained that when she was a young girl, her father owned a Rolls-Royce and she would enjoy taking her shoes off to sink her bare feet into the thick carpeting. Land Rover’s designers replicated this for her by using mohair, usually reserved for luxury clothing, to make the mats. Bespoke luggage completes the holistic design package that is the Range Rover Evoque Special Edition with Victoria Beckham. This four-piece set is based on the designer’s own luggage range, using the same high-quality internal structure and clothed in hand stitched black leather. The set comprises two his and her’s wheeled suitcases and wash bags, all of which are lined in the same microsuede used for the roof lining, and as a finishing touch the zip pulls are finished in the same matt grey as the exterior. A beautiful hand stitched leather wallet, with rose-gold detail containing a guide to the exclusive features of the car is cobranded Range Rover Evoque and signed by Victoria Beckham. Victoria Beckham is a joint venture between Victoria Beckham and Simon Fuller’s XIX Entertainment Ltd. ABOUT LAND ROVER

he Audi TT has received a significant performance boost with the imminent launch of the TT RS plus Coupé and Roadster models at all Essex Audi Centres.
