Urban Myth have been designing and supplying kitchens to some of the UK’s most forward thinking home builders for the last 30 years and it’s very rare that a development comes along with the kind of impact that stops us in our tracks.

Gaynes Park mansions is one such development. Nestled away amongst the trees at the end of a half mile long driveway, the gothic Victorian mansion sits. When I say it sits, what I really mean is it stands, imposingly, on the top of the hill looking out over the city of London. e penthouse is in fact, the highest residence in the whole of Essex. So impressive is the building and surrounding grounds that the developers didn’t really need to do all that much to create the seven magnificent apartments. ey could have simply thrown some paint around, tidied the grounds and people would have still rushed to buy. Fact is though, they spent over three years planning, designing and considering every tiny detail to create seven homes with a specification that would make an oligarch weep – we take a closer look at the wonderful history and modern living of Gaynes Park Mansions. If wondering where to go, somewhere different and interesting and also for enlightenment about our local areas and in particular, key people who have added a personal touch to significant periods in history - then absolutely - you must visit the ‘30th Anniversary of the Epping Forest District Museum’. Escorted around the museum by Carly Hearne, assistant exhibitions and collections officer, she commented: “For 30 years, Epping Forest District Museum has provided a service of exhibitions, talks and education visits for visitors to learn and enjoy the history of our district. e exhibition celebrates the history of this service, looking back at the last 30 years and looking forward to the next 30.” – we look at a hidden Epping gem. ose of us, of a certain age, will certainly remember Suzi Quatro. e feisty blonde, five-footer… husky voiced, skin-tight black leather outfits and little white boots. is sexy little rocker, fascinated us all with her Devil Gate Drive, Can e Can (never did understand what that song was about) and 48 Crash. e captivating little dances that we all tried to mimic, rocking from left to right, the nodding head, foot-stomping kicks, boundless energy and her manipulation of the bass guitar. is is the woman who allegedly, shot Alice Cooper between the eyes with a rubber-tipped arrow was and probably still is, the ultimate rock chick – we take a look at celebrities, past and present from Brentwood. Wrap up warm and embrace the Autumn. Until next month.

REVD TONY MORLING, GILL WEBSTER, KASTA DIP
PALS FOR DALITS
THE VISIT WORDS BY CHRISTINE BAKER
W
hen Kasta Dip, Desk Officer for JustIce, Peace & Reconciliation at the Church of North India, was welcomed to Loughton Methodist Church by Rev Tony Morling on Sunday 11th September, he could hardly believe the journey that had guided him to spend a month living with members of the Church congregation and spreading the word about life as a Dalit. Kasta is the inspiration behind LMC’s PALS for Dalits fundraising venture that has enabled computers and IT skills to be provided for young Dalits in India. As part of the two year project the group has raised enough money to send 25 computers to Kasta who has set up computer classes for young Dalits in two centres. Kasta told the congregation at the Racial Justice Sunday service that he grew up in a hugely discriminatory environment and suffered daily physical and mental abuse because he is a Dalit. However, with the support of his family and having confidence in the absolute love of God, Kasta has, on a personal level, broken those chains of casteism. He is an educated man, respected and now known worldwide. Yet millions of Dalits still 10
remain uneducated, abused and forced to carry out degrading menial tasks just to survive. ey are trapped by casteism, a 3,000 year old system of oppression. Kasta has a passion to free these Dalits and works tirelessly for the Church of North India to make this a reality. His message is that discrimination is wrong and the way to overcome it is to educate Dalits to give themselves more equal chances. WORK GOES ON – AWARENESS IS RAISED PALS organiser Gill Webster said “We have gained new insight into what it means to be a Dalit particularly in the rural areas and also the challenges facing Dalit Christians and Dalit women. e importance of education and the value of learning computer skills will empower young Dalits to escape from poverty and discrimination. As most of them do not have access to English classes, the next step is to provide these as well. e main aim of the visit was to raise awareness of the Dalit issue however, since his visit we are delighted to have increased our fund raising total from 5,500 to £16,000.” During his time in Loughton PALS had set up meetings for
Kasta to talk to local schools and community groups about life as a Dalit and the difference the PALS computers are making to young Dalits back in India. Kasta also spoke at Westminster Central Hall to a newly formed group ‘Methodist Women in Britain’ talking particularly about issues for Dalit women. He also visited key groups in Oxford, Derby and Southall addressing the World Mission Forum, the Central Finance Board’s Advisory Committee on Ethical Investment and Friends of Churches in India. Tom Donoghue, aged 25, from Loughton who leads the Church’s Sunday Night Youth Fellowship group said “Kasta’s visit provided lots of opportunities to talk about the PALS for Dalit’s project with people outside LMC including my colleagues in the City. Chatting to a young Christian graduate, new to the City this September, I told him about Kasta’s visit and explained the status of a Dalit and that as a Christian Dalit they are not afforded the same rights by Indian law as a Dalit who is Hindu, Buddhist or Sikh. We discussed how it is incomprehensible here in the UK to really imagine what this is like for these people who truly are at the bottom of the pile in this world. I think the hope for our Dalit Christian brothers and sisters is amazing. I am so pleased to have been a part of this visit and the project.” e last words come from Kasta Dip “Memories of being at Loughton Methodist Church are still fresh - lovely people, wonderful hospitality, and a common concern for Dalits. Before coming I was anxious about how the people would react to my presentations when I talk about caste based discrimination and the practice of untouchables in Indian society. Maybe it was a spontaneous thought as I am
myself a Dalit. But my friends at Loughton have surprised me. e warmth of friendship I have received from them is everlasting. I am deeply moved by the way LMC is fundraising to support out project for the benefits of Dalit youth. By supporting the projects you are creating ripples in the lives of many in my country and making a difference.
I BELIEVE THAT MY VISIT TO LMC HAS STRENGTHENED OUR PARTNERSHIP. GOD BLESS YOU ALL!”

And let’s not forget about the carols for the audience to join in with. “We’re hoping lots of people will come and we want them all to be in good voice,” says Danielle. “We’re lucky to have such a strong following in North East London and South East Essex. Back in February, it was great to see so many Life Series readers at our Shakespeare-inspired concert, e Food of Love. It looks like we’re getting more and more Life Series regulars attending our concerts, so we hope they’ll all come and join us for our seasonal celebration. On behalf of the choir, thank you readers (and the Life Series) for all of your support!”
“Time flies when you’re having fun,” laughs Danielle John, Meljon’s Publicity Manager. “In less than a month it’ll be time for our final concert in the 2011 Season.”
e Meljon Singers will be joined by organist Simon Harvey and the Harlow Chorus Academy, adult singers ‘in training’, who are also directed by Janette Ruocco. ey will be performing their own ‘set’ at the concert, as well as boosting the ranks for the audience carols. “Meljon always enjoys working with other groups, especially when they’re as full of enthusiasm as the Academy,” says Danielle.
t seems only weeks ago that we were writing about e Meljon Singers’ 20th anniversary celebrations. Now over a year has flown by, so we’ve been catching up with this acclaimed and innovative chamber choir to see what they’ve been up to during 2011.
e Meljon Singers is one of London’s most accomplished and enterprising chamber choirs, based more or less on your doorstep in the London Borough of Redbridge. e choir performs regularly in the local area and in various central London venues.
‘It Came Upon the Midnight Clear’, on Saturday 3 December at St Mary’s, South Woodford, will be a varied programme of gorgeous Advent and Christmas music, from the 16th century composer omas Tallis to the modern minimalist Arvo Pärt. e centrepiece is Cecilia McDowall’s Christmas cantata Christus Natus Est. Not many choirs are daring enough to hold a concert so early on in the Christmas calendar - but then, not many choirs have e Meljon Singers’ ambitious streak, or a conductor like Janette Ruocco, with a real flair for adventurous programming. With plenty of new seasonal songs and arrangements of Christmas classics like Jingle Bells, the concert promises to be a feast of music for choral enthusiasts and choral music virgins alike.

NOVEMBER2011
It’s been a year of collaborations for Meljon. In the summer, they joined forces with Janette Ruocco’s central London choir Illumination for a concert tour of Liguria and Tuscany. It was Meljon’s fifth Italian tour, and their third visit based in Levanto, on the spectacular Cinque Terre coast. “It’s one of the most beautiful areas in the country,” says Janette Ruocco, who has Italian parentage. “We’ve established a real rapport with the people there, through our concert tours. So you can imagine how we’ve been feeling, watching the news coverage of the

catastrophic flash floods.” But no amount of water can wash away the joyful memories of the singers, and the warm reception they received in the summer for their performances. Arranging a concert tour can be a logistical nightmare, but fortunately e Meljon Singers have an experienced administrator to keep things in hand, as well as plenty of support from Italian contacts and friends. Not that it was all plain sailing. “Our ‘tourists’ like to keep me on my toes,” says Janette. “We had a tenor who lost his passport, a soprano with violent toothache, an alto who missed her train connection in Paris, and a suitcase full of tour music which we couldn’t unlock. And that was all before we’d sung a note!” It must seem like only yesterday that they were sipping glasses of prosecco on the sunlit Ligurian coast. But in no time the singers were back rehearsing in London, and in October they brought a taste of Italy to the Woodford Festival with their concert Viva Italia, featuring Rossini’s good-humoured romp, the Petite Messe Solenelle – not ‘petite (it lasts for 80 minutes) nor at all ‘solemn’. Rossini hoped it would earn him a place in Heaven, and the Meljon Singers certainly gave it a heavenly performance. All choirs need financing to continue promoting their concerts, and while e Meljon Singers have a devoted following of Patrons and Friends – and they’re always keen to welcome more – they also organise fund-raising events to help replenish their coffers. Eating and drinking are always popular with the singers, so a couple of weeks ago, they held a wine-tasting with a buffet supper. A Master of Wine guided them and their guests through a selection of wines from south western France. He explained how the professionals remained sober through tastings, by discreetly spitting the samples into appropriate containers. e Meljon Singers and friends were content to remain amateurs, and relied on designated drivers! e Meljon Singers are amateurs in the truest meaning of the word: people who sing for the love of it. Some of them also sing

Some singers had been asked to help out with a concert at Southwark Cathedral performed by the Financial Times Choir. When a soloist dropped out at two hours’ notice, Mandy, who was then the FT’s Musical Director, put some music into their hands and told them they’d be doing a ‘set’! ey were, understandably, gobsmacked – which is what a bocca aperta means in Italian! If you like the sound of e Meljon Singers – and producing beautiful sound is what the group is all about – you can get involved in a number of ways. John Buckmaster on 01992 611711 will be happy to tell you more about supporting the group as a Meljon Friend. If you’re a keen and committed singer with choral experience and good sight-reading ability, Janette Ruocco on 07739 864 242 would be delighted to talk to you about becoming a Meljon Singer. You can receive regular information about Meljon concerts and events by contacting Danielle John on 07752 042 311 and joining their free e-mailing list. Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET
D
espite spending almost all of my working life in this business, I am still at a loss to understand the reaction I get from property owners who seek my advice regarding the value of their home. I truly believe that if I accused them of having body odour I would receive a less hostile reception should my opinion not equal their own, or another agent’s opinion of the value of their property. It is because it is their home. What is in reality a “business transaction” tends to be taken personally, and in most cases causes offence. ereby lies the problem. e buyer sees the intended purchase as a business transaction, the seller sees it as parting with their most treasured and valuable possession. Believe it or not this even applies to developers of new property. For having put much money, blood, sweat and tears into a new development, they see criticism of their projected sales values as an affront to their perceived business acumen. Now don’t think for one minute that I consider that we get things right every time. ere are occasions when a buyer will, totally against the run of play, choose to ignore good sense and the best advice, and knowingly pay over the odds for a property. Only last week a long standing and respected client agreed to purchase an apartment at what

He cheerfully admitted was at least £300,000 over his opinion of market value. (My opinion was that it was at least twice that of his estimate). Now that client is most intelligent and extremely experienced in property, yet he was influenced to buy at this figure because, it was a unique home which defied comparison in size, features and location. ere is always an exception to every rule, but one must keep in mind that these are very rare, in a boom, and as rare as hens teeth in current economic conditions. ere are still very few homes coming into the
market, and many of the buyers registered with us, who originally seemed worthy of being in our “hot buyers box” are now suffering from “buyer fatigue” and have been relegated to our “intensive care” department. ere are far less buyers willing to take on major works to any property, but there are still a few keen to do so providing they can be convinced that the purchase price would, without doubt, make it worth their while. Amongst others, we have in this regard slashed the price of a major home in the heart of Chigwell by some £300,000 from the opening figure. With a little enlargement and improvement this will prove to be a great opportunity for someone. We are also offering a number of vacant properties that must be sold, all of which are open to substantial offers. With several new routes for finance making mortgages more easily available, the oncoming winter period could
prove a golden opportunity to pick up a bargain. So my advice to buyers is not to rely on website descriptions, or be put off by overly optimistic asking prices, and get out there now and pick up a bargain. Don’t be afraid to make offers, particularly if you are in a position to complete quickly. Remember though, that a house is not “just for Christmas”, and what seems a high price now, will (particularly if inflation continues to rise) come to look cheap over time. My advice to sellers of over valued property is that the price you feel too low to expect today, could be the price you had wished you had accepted tomorrow. SO WHAT’S HAPPENING IN
NOVEMBER? WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS
S
o what is exciting about November? Summer has certainly retired and winter’s hand is preparing her chilly sweep across the country. e two main events in November are Guy Fawkes Night and also Remembrance Sunday, “to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.”* Having explored the origin of the symbolic poppy, for those who do not know, it is from a poem written by an army doctor, Colonel John McCray who was present during the Flanders battle. Disturbed by the carnage he witnessed, he felt moved to write poetry and was inspired by the vibrant red (and bloody coloured) on the battlefield. His poem is entitled ‘In Flanders Fields’. is poem in turn, inspired Moira Michael (an American woman) to purchase 25 red poppies which she passed to some ex-servicemen. A French secretary (Madam Guerin) then explored the possibility of artificial poppies being used to raise money for service personnel and their families. Subsequent to a meeting between Sir Herbert Brown (chairman of the Legion’s appeals department) and Madam Guerin, poppies were imported for the first time ever and Poppy Day was born on November 1921. Ever since, the red poppy has been symbolic for Remembrance Sunday.

NOVEMBER2011
After a solemn start to the month and towards the second-half of November, we should be preparing for Christmas! Whether planning parties, great menus and/or family events, a great day is the result of great planning! And by the end of November, most of it should, in theory, be part of the process. If making your own Christmas cake, it is important to allow time for the cake to mature and become moist. A tip is to soak fruit in whisky (preferably overnight) before adding to the mix. So whilst it may be cold outside, this is again the perfect weather, if you’re warm, snug and cosy – indoors and with family and friends! However as I always state in my features, if per chance, you know of somebody who might be on their own at Christmas and you have a spare place at your table, please remember those less fortunate and invite them to share your fun and celebration. For business owners looking to enjoy a Christmas party with their team and professional colleagues, I have written another feature to help promote local restaurants offering Christmas deals, especially if booked in advance. GAYNES PARK
MANSIONS
U
rban Myth have been designing and supplying kitchens to some of the UK’s most forward thinking home builders for the last 30 years and it’s very rare that a development comes along with the kind of impact that stops us in our tracks. Fact is though, they spent over three years planning, designing and considering every tiny detail to create seven homes with a specification that would make an oligarch weep. Each apartment boasts huge windows, vast ceilings and such herculean amounts of space (between 2000 and 4000 square feet) that you could be forgiven for thinking that a single apartment covered the whole mansion. Take apartment 3 for example; arranged over two levels with stunning French limestone floors, the ground floor features an entrance hall to rival the footprint of

many houses and is accessed via huge gothic doors, a huge drawing room and beautifully equipped Urban Myth kitchen. An attractive turning staircase leads to the three ‘suites’ with the master featuring a sunken bath set below two corner windows. It’s fair to say that the developers have treated each apartment as if it were their own, nothing has been left to chance, no detail was too small to be overlooked and just OK was simply not acceptable. As if all that wasn’t enough, an extensively equipped self contained gymnasium has been built adjacent to the garage block along with an outside tennis court for the exclusive use of the owners of the apartments. Over ten acres of historic woodland and meticulously cultivated grounds are more than large enough to get your fix of jogging in and the decking areas around the lake make the perfect spot to relax and think about just how good life is. Each apartment also benefits from expansive views of the grounds. What the developers have in fact created is the best of country manor house living with none of the maintenance issues normally associated with such an old building and grounds. at particular headache is taken care of by the live-in staff who will occupy a self-contained apartment adjacent to the leisure facilities and be responsible for the day to day maintenance of the building and grounds. e location, with Epping underground station less than two miles away, Stansted airport less than twenty miles and the

heart of London’s financial district a little over twenty three miles away gives you the best of all worlds. e building and grounds aren’t without their own unique history either. e manor of Gaynes Park can be traced all the way back to the 13th century when the original house of the manor was sited within a deer park and known as Gaines with the House. So steeped in history is this site, one of the houses was actually used by Queen Elizabeth I as a venue to hold council. e current mansion, built around 1777 after one of the originals was destroyed by fire, was acquired by the Chisenhale-Marsh family in 1792, modified in 1818 and enlarged in 1870. e resulting building is what the current developers AWC used as their blueprint to create the Gaynes Park Mansions for the 21st century. Maybe it’s this history, maybe it’s the setting, maybe it’s the developers time, effort and attention to detail or maybe it’s simply a combination of all of this which makes Gaynes Park mansions so very special. f wondering where to go, somewhere different and interesting and also for enlightenment about our local areas and in particular, key people who have added a personal touch to significant periods in history - then absolutely - you must visit the ‘30th Anniversary of the Epping Forest District Museum’. Escorted around the museum by Carly Hearne, assistant exhibitions and collections officer, she commented: “For 30 years, Epping Forest District Museum has provided a service of exhibitions, talks and education visits for visitors to learn and enjoy the history of our district. e exhibition celebrates the history of this service, looking back at the last 30 years and looking forward to the next 30.” I was amazed by what I saw, the exhibits and interesting facts and the sensitivity of the exhibition, its presentation and the poignancy of the collection. With so many gems, a visit to his museum is an incredibly, worthwhile trip and a rewarding

experience for all members of the family. Reflecting back on past exhibitions, Carly added: “One of the highlights of the exhibition is the ‘exhibition warehouse’ which captures some of the museum’s best-loved exhibitions. We hope that visitors will be able to reflect back on their favourite exhibition and maybe even suggest some new ideas. From Narnia and the Borrowers to Ancient Egypt and the WWI trench, this 3-D interactive room is not to be missed.” Also worth noting is that the exhibits will be changing throughout the next few months. Definitely worth taking time to view, are the eydon Towers Albums. During World War I, eydon Towers (Epping) served as a hospital for wounded soldiers. One of the nurses, Miss Rosina Spruzen, collected letters, notes and sketches from soldiers to the nursing staff who cared for them. For those more interested in fashion, the museum’s Victorian era is particularly well represented and includes other accessories such

HOLLYWOOD MEETS BRENTWOOD FOR TOWIE STAR’S TEETH

higwell dental practice Smile Design by Ash was seen giving expert advice to James ‘Arg’ Argent, star of hit TV show ‘e Only Way Is Essex’. e programme aired at the end of last month. James, who’s had an off/on relationship with girlfriend Lydia, is thinking about a Smile Makeover and wants his girlfriend to like his teeth. Although they got back together before the filming of series 3 Lydia, herself a stunner, is trying to influence his lifestyle despite James being a self confessed ‘yo yo’ dieter. He thinks a Smile Makeover will
work wonders but the colour of his teeth is all important to him. In the programme Ash offers James some colour choices from regular to bright Hollywood which provokes James to quip “How about something between Hollywood and Brentwood?” Further episodes of the show will reveal the outcome. “It was a privilege and an honour to be selected to look at the teeth of one of the lead cast members in the programme” said Ash. “Smiles are important to all of us but even more so on screen. James will have to tame his love of fizzy drinks first though.”
Ash, himself a TV veteran from the Extreme Makeover Series in which he was the lead dentist, is pleased to be playing a part in TOWIE. “It’s a first for me so I want to make sure James gets the best advice to help him make decisions.”

f the winter fashion trends feel daunting, put all the focus on your feet instead.
Every major style paraded on the international catwalks came with boots included. So if the top-to-toe dominatrix look is a step too far, then just try the over-knee boots on their own. Worried by the thought of faux fur? Pull on a cuff bootie for a nod to the texture trend instead. Wedge, flat or heel, you can easily put your own stamp on a top trend via your footwear. Here's our easy guide... MOD SQUAD Burberry and Prada championed a Sixties comeback and boots have followed in their footsteps. Choose ankle styles with a mid-height block heel for a retro take that's both versatile and walkable. Go the whole hog and team with a Sixties shift. Boot buy: Next black '60s ankle boots, £48 (0844 844 8000/www.next.co.uk) COLOUR BLOCK Jewel colours dazzled on the catwalks but it's juicy berry tones that have really got mouths watering. Look for ruby, garnet or crimson. If you're trying out top-to-toe colour, then match your legwear tights or trousers - to your boots for legs that go on and on. Boot buy: Russell & Bromley Victoria red platform boots, £375 (020 7629 6903/www.russellandbromley.co.uk) GLITTER BUG Roberto Cavalli and Dolce & Gabbana set the tone for catwalk shimmer and shine with razzle-dazzle aplenty. If sequin dresses aren't your thing, bling up your boots instead with Miu Miu-inspired glitter numbers. Beware of magpies! Boot buy: ASOS Astrid glitter ankle boots, £50 (www.asos.com) KINKY BOOTS Fetish is the risqué trend of the season and bad girl heels are the easiest way to surrender. Always black with a mean heel and plenty of lace-up or strappy detailing, these boots will have fashionistas cowering in style submission. Go above the knee if you dare but avoid the Pretty Woman patent references and stick to slick leather. Boot buy: Dune Paramount black lace-up boots, £199 (0116 284 7800/www.dune.co.uk) ANIMAL INSTINCT Big cat spots, Dalmatian dots and snake/animal skins are the print of the season. Go wild with leopard print boots in the classic black and beige colourway or try something less conventional such as monochrome spots or coloured snakeskin a la Prada. Boot buy: Topshop Anika leopard print boots, £65 (www.topshop.com) HERITAGE HOUND Who knows if the Royal Wedding sparked the heritage obsession but countryside chic reigned on the catwalks at Yves Saint Laurent and Chanel. If Highland weaves, plaid and check aren't your thing, stick to traditional riding boots to mount the trend. Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR TOOTH WEAR In this issue, I would like to discuss about TOOTH WEAR. Teeth can be damaged and worn down for a number of reasons, many of which can actually be prevented.
advanced bite checking technologies in the world of dentistry. We can accurately measure the bite forces between the teeth electronically. is valuable information then helps us to sort out bite problems definitively. Once the bite is balanced, then the damaged teeth can be repaired or treated to achieve a healthy situation again.
Why do teeth wear away? Teeth are covered by a very strong, protective outer layer called enamel. is enamel can be damaged in one of two ways: attrition (which is when teeth grind and wear away) or erosion (which is when acid damages or erodes the enamel away). Once the inner layer called dentine is exposed, the teeth wear away much faster as dentine is a lot softer than enamel. How common is this? Acid damage is very common in teenagers and young adults. is is mainly due to the consumption of fizzy drinks and juices. e damage is irreversible, and so a preventative approach is vital for younger people. Teeth will also naturally wear down slightly with age in most adults. What about grinding habits? Some people have a “strong bite”. is means that there are higher forces on the teeth when chewing. Also, some people grind or clench their teeth as a habit – often during the night. is can lead to extra stresses being placed on the teeth as well as on the fillings. is can lead to cracks in the teeth and also actual chipping away of the outer enamel layer. is has a net result of shortening the teeth, which makes them less attractive and be more sensitive. How does acid damage teeth? Acid can either come via the diet, or from within the body. Foods and drinks that cause
DAMAGE OF TEETH CAUSED BY GRINDING AND ACID EROSION
damage to the enamel are citric fruits, fruit juices, fizzy drinks, and excessive alcohol. Conditions such as anorexia, gastro-oesophageal reflux and pregnancy vomiting can also take their toll on teeth! What is the treatment? For people that grind their teeth, it is important to provide a protective mouth guard made in plastic. is is worn at night-time and prevents teeth grinding against the opposing teeth. In this way, no damage can occur. For acid erosion, it is vital to identify the causes and alter the diet accordingly, or get professional help and advice from the medical practitioner for a truly medical cause of acid from the stomach. Can a “wrong bite” cause teeth to wear away?
Yes. If someone has “bite interferences” on one of the back teeth i.e. the teeth don’t fit properly and slide into an abnormal biting pattern, then this can lead to an altered functional pattern of chewing. is will cause the edges of the enamel on the front teeth to wear away. Also, if there are some back teeth missing, then the chewing pressure is far greater on the front teeth and this will also cause damage. e solution for these problems is to make minor bite adjustments to get harmonious movement of teeth over each other when chewing, and to replace missing teeth at the back with implants or bridges to improve the function.
What happens when teeth are worn down a lot? A detailed dental examination is required including photographs, X-rays, impressions for making duplicate models of your teeth, etc. e dentist can then improve the bite and the appearance by providing naturally looking porcelain veneers or crowns. By wearing a mouth guard and also looking after the teeth better will avoid any further problems in many cases. It is also important to choose a very skilled and experienced dentist that has had a lot of advanced training in these difficult types of treatment. e goal is to achieve a healthy, attractive and long lasting smile. For more information, visit www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk, or phone 020 85000544 to arrange a complimentary initial consultation.

WALKING DREAMS... H
i everyone, how’s your walking going? I’ve realised from the feedback that I get that some of you are very active and getting more so, but that others of you love to read about the walks and even to watch people doing them too but are not that keen on putting it all into practice yourselves. You tell me that watching Julia Bradbury on Wainwright’s Walks and exploring canals and rivers feature highly in your weekly TV priorities. And why not. You may stay that way or if I bombard you enough, you may get out there sometime and enjoy it. It’s a great way of getting exercise.... Well with this pattern in mind, whether you are an armchair walker or one that actually gets out there, you may want to think about buying some of the great walking books that are out there as Christmas pressies. Yes, I’ve said that word but you know it is getting to the time to think about it. I have a library of walking books, some detailing walks that I use when I’m out there to make sure I don’t get lost. I have many of the National Trail Guides that are well worn due to having used them on the ames Path, the Capital Ring and London Loop, all of which pass through the area we all live in. I have walking guide books of various cities like Bruges and Rome, some that tell me about hillwalking and other glorious full colour ‘coffee table’ books that are a joy to leaf through and are of many of the ‘Great

Walks of the World’ including walks like the Inca Trail which I have had the privilege to undertake. Some of them have dictated my walks as in the Inca Trail and the Penne Way which I hope to do some day and others are still in the planning or even fantasy part of my mind.
I LOVE NOTHING MORE THAN TO SIT DOWN WITH A WALKING BOOK, A GLASS OF WINE AND A MAP, I CAN GET QUITE CARRIED AWAY. AM I MAKING YOU THINK? Amazon is a great place to browse books if you can’t get to a bookshop, even WH Smith to be found on practically all high streets has a section on walking books and has walking magazines, a subscription to which is also a great present. However, can I recommend that many of you reading this should venture into Covent Garden and visit Stamfords on Long Lane to whet your appetite. is is a travel bookshop and has all kinds of books including walking and travel writing books as well as maps, bags, pedometers and other related products. It also has a coffee shop so a great place to browse the books etc that you’re thinking of buying. It’s a great place to buy those Christmas pressies and who knows you may be able to satisfy many people in one fell swoop. Good luck.

On the first day we did a walk that was very local and took us first to the top of the highest hill in the area at 771 metres. e walk was through woodland and was a fairly gentle climb and at the very top, on a gloriously clear day, we could see for miles. We even managed to get a group of 9 women to maintain a silence for a full 3 minutes, what a wonderful sound. at gave me an idea for running meditative walks but that is another story.
THE EEG ON THE BREAKTHROUGH WALK IN 2006
From there we came down through a village and if people had wanted to this was a place where they could opt out and take a short cut back to where we were staying. Where possible on many of my walks I make sure that there is at least one opt out point. is is especially useful when people are just starting to walk with a group of more experienced walkers and it’s also often used by those who don’t have the time to do a full day’s walk. Continuing on that first day walk though we did a large circle on a mix of roads and paths, some through other small villages and in woodland too. On the following day there was a choice with some of us heading off on a full days walk and the rest a much lighter walk to the next village to have coffee and then walk back. On the final full day we did a short 2 hour walk on fairly level ground in the morning which much of the group did and then we had massages and relaxed by the pool in the afternoon. is choice was very much appreciated and if you are thinking of including walking in a holiday or weekend break it’s worth looking at choice if you have a mixed ability or mixed interest group. WALKING ALONG FRENCH LANES
Finally on the topic of presents, shops like Blacks, Field and Trek, Nomad, Ellie Bingham and North Face to name but a few have a wide range of clothing from wonderful waterproof and windproof jackets, to boots, socks, flasks, head torches, gloves and just about anything else you might need that might enable you to tick things off your list. e Athena Angels who I trained to do the Night Hike gave me a wonderful £50 voucher to spend in Nomad which I’m looking forward to doing some time soon. As I write I’m planning a trip to Burgundy in France, back to the place that I took the East End Girls to celebrate 5 years of walking together. We went out there to do some walking but also to relax and it was a great all round experience with everyone having a fabulous time and coming back feeling really relaxed. Some of the girls were carrying injuries and I was able to plan a number of walks of differing lengths and also over a mix of terrain so all needs could be met and no-one would have to miss out. If you’re planning walking yourself, this is important to think about. We also had other activities that we were committed to so we couldn’t be on full day walks on all occasions.
After the Maggie’s Night Hike, one of the women for whom walking was a new pastime, asked me for some recommendations for walking with children. I did tell her of places I’ve mentioned in my articles here especially around Epping Forest and in fact sent her a copy of the article about walking with children but as she wasn’t sure where she was going, I just suggested that when she found a place she googled suitable walks for children in X. ere will always be suitable walks and these will probably suit adults who are not into walking either or who enjoy it but are unable to go too far. In a situation like this when you might be away for a few days there’s always the chance to mix up groups and for some members to go off on a longer and more difficult walk while others stay with the kids etc and do a shorter walk or two spaced by hot chocolate or a visit to some attraction. It’s just some planning and imagination that’s needed. Have fun thinking this all through, browsing, shopping and planning. Heather Waring heather@waringwell.com 020 8220 6919 n

NEW smilE FOR TEssA Words by Christine baker
TESSA'S NEW SMILE
I
t was the right time, the right person and the right TESSA'S TEETH BEFORE TREATMENT place as far as Tessa was concerned. “I felt like I had done all the research, been to see people and sought advice but it was only when I sat down with Ash that I truly believed at last someone was listening to me and what I wanted. We just clicked.” Tessa, who lives in Loughton with her husband and son, currently at university, said adverts for Smile Design by Ash in the Life magazine caught her attention. “I had spent two years doing research, googled the web and visited four or five dentists but I never felt confident. ey were too busy telling me what they thought. It was so different with Ash and he seemed to take a personal interest in my treatment and came up with several options to address the problem.” A CRACKED TOOTH AGED 9 Tessa was concerned with her top front teeth and in particular one that broke when she was aged just 9 years old. “e broken tooth was crowned more than once but after 30 years I could see that it was dull in colour and had come to the end of its life. Not only that, I also had ridges on my crown up by the gum which made it sharp and uncomfortable plus the back of my front teeth were badly eroded and worn down.

NOVEMBER2011
“I already knew this but when I spoke to other dental surgeons I got differing opinions. ese included a view that there was nothing to be done and one said my teeth would eventually crumble away. ere was an offer to apply filling material to the eroded area and all would be fine and another recommended four extractions and 15 months of orthodontic work. All said I should try whitening them but you can’t do that with a crown.” Tessa had never been that happy with her teeth and had felt rather self-conscious about them for years. “Getting older doesn’t help either “she said “I knew I was only going to do this once – it’s not like buying a new dress which you can stop wearing if you don’t like it.” TESSA HAS BEEN NERVOUS OF DENTISTS… After all the research and attracted by an initial free consultation, Tessa visited the practice which she found to be ‘state of the art’. She said “I have never liked dentists, in fact felt quite nervous of them, but Ash was very different. I thought now here’s someone who really wants to do a good job for me. Once I saw the various before and after pictures of his cases, I felt I could trust him. It’s a very personal experience.” Work started in May and included a visit to Jessica, the hygienist. “I found her charming” said Tessa. “ere is so much more to looking after your teeth and gums. I learnt a lot about my mouth, flossing and using the correct mouthwash for the first time. Everything feels much cleaner. Ash explained all my options carefully and in detail and helped me to make the correct decision for the investment I was making in my new smile.” Treatment included replacement of an old amalgam filling with a tooth coloured filling which was followed by whitening of the teeth to enhance the colour. By very careful, precise and minimal preparation of Tessa’s front six teeth, Ash was able to provide six all porcelain crowns or veneers to protect the eroded teeth and improve the appearance. Colour was all important to the new look and Ash arranged for Tessa to visit Rob Storrar, master ceramist technician at Amdecc Dental Laboratory in Basildon, where the teeth are made. “It was fascinating being in the lab that makes the porcelain veneers” she said. “I was pleasantly surprised to find that treatment was pain free and as soon as it was all finished, they felt like my own teeth straight away. I am really pleased with them and now I can drink hot and cold liquid without any soreness or aching. I think I am more confident about them now too.” e session with Capture Photographic Studio in Chigwell which followed treatment was a lovely bonus said Tessa. “I have pictures of my mother and grandmother that I treasure and although we have lots of snaps I had always wanted a professional picture taken and it was great fun.” FOR GREAT SPECIAL OFFERS, READERS SHOULD VISIT WWW.SMILEDESIGNBYASH.CO.UK/PRIVILEGE OR PHONE 020 85000544 FOR A FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION WITH ASH

experience all combine for a very pleasant to the practice. He has practiced quality dentistry care in the present location since 1981 and the practice is well known to young and old alike. Michael told us, that some of his great moments is totreat the grandchildren of patients he originally treated. In addition to cosmetic dentistry care, the dentists can provide general family dental treatment plans, dental x-rays, comprehensive exams, dental cleanings, root canal therapy, bridge-work, plus full and partial dentures. COMPREHENSIVE DENTAL CARE Local families depend upon their years of experience and careful evaluation of each family member's exact needs to provide them with quality, lifelong dental care. Individual patient treatment is determined after a comprehensive dental examination. Missing teeth can usually be replaced by either an implant or a bridge, and one of the dentists will present options available for your care. is could include: n Teeth Cleaning and Whitening n Comprehensive Dental Exam n X-rays n Tooth Extractions n Fixed Bridges n Metal-Free, White Fillings n Porcelain (tooth-coloured) Veneers n Root Canals n Full & Partial Dentures n Regular & Extended Treatment Plans ….. so there’s not much else we could ask for! While we were visiting we met the happy staff, a team of trained professionals with many years of experience taking a great pride in giving the patients the special care and attention they deserve. Whether its Samantha who makes sure you feel comfortably from the moment you arrive, or Jennine who is one of the most relaxed hygienists we’ve met, your visit to e Dental Health Centre will be a relaxing as possible. While we were there we asked Michael to give us a few tips on taking care of our teeth And he recommended….. PLAQUE POINTERS Plaque is probably the biggest cause of tooth decay and eventual loss. It's the major cause of tooth loss in adults and must be removed daily by "proper" brushing and the use of dental floss. Have your dentist or hygienist show you how to brush properly. e best way, if not the only way, to remove tartar and long established plaque is to have a professional cleaning. But remember, plaque will start to reform the very next day. e only one who can remove plaque regularly is you. PROFESSIONAL CLEANING - HOW OFTEN? is depends on your own personal thoroughness with daily
brushing, the foods you eat, medications you may take, and of course, smoking. orough cleaning is much more than simply cosmetic, although that is very important too. Usually twice a year is sufficient. However, if you accumulate a lot, it must be more frequent or the irritation will cause pocket formation, bone loss, and eventually possible loss of your teeth. PERIODONTAL DISEASE - EARLY DIAGNOSIS e sad fact is that more teeth are lost because of periodontal disease (gum disease) than any other cause, including cavities. Fortunately, gum disease can be treated successfully if diagnosed early. Unfortunately, you have no way of knowing of its onset other than by dental examination because there is normally no pain or other symptoms in its early stages. To insure healthy gums and teeth, you must combine regular dental examinations with effective brushing and flossing. Since the mouth is so often an indicator of what is happening to the rest of the body, it is important to check out anything in the mouth that is not normal. Your physician and your dentist want to work together to keep you fit and healthy. A medical examination is more than taking your temperature and blood pressure, and a dental checkup is much more than a twice-a-year glance for cavities. HOW'S YOUR SMILE? Have you ever noticed how a happy, smiling face makes you want to smile too? e person smiling doesn't have to be beautiful or in the full bloom of youth ...just an attractive smile in itself can be appealing. Some people who would like to smile broadly when the occasion calls for it, are reluctant to do so. eir smile is guarded, most of their teeth are covered up because they don't want them to show. Maybe there are gaps caused by missing teeth, perhaps their teeth are badly discolored or protrude too much. However, no one has to feel inhibited. With today's dental techniques, anyone's smile can be improved. Primarily, you used to visit a dentist to find out if your teeth were in trouble. If there was any decay, or if you had infected gums, you wanted the problem taken care of so you could save your teeth. But there are other reasons for seeing your dentist, and one of them is to help keep your smile attractive. ere's no need to hide your smile today when there are so many ways it can be improved. …. And with that sound advice we thanked the team for a great visit and promised that we would be back! e Dental Health Centre is situated at 128 Woodford Avenue, Gants Hill, Ilford, Essex IG2 6XA. Her uber-luxurious sanctuary is a homage to her renowned ‘East Meets West’ style with its uncluttered, opulent rooms; a distinctive use of balance and symmetry, and trademark colour palette of neutrals, including her signature ‘taupe’ shade. “Each of the homes I have designed and lived in myself has been an on-going exercise - an experiment if you like - where I have tried to understand how we see things, what gives us contentment and what we are really trying to achieve,â€? she explains. Hallways are often, wrongly, neglected areas in the home, says Hoppen, and can ag up personal style. Kitchens are now as popular as dining and entertaining areas, and Hoppen has devised her own streamlined recipe for the space. In her home this area extends over the majority of the ground oor and incorporates a dining area leading on to the garden. “It’s deďŹ nitely the theatre at the heart of my home,â€? she says. “To cook and entertain at home is now cool and I have a ďŹ replace up on the wall like a painting, which is a focal point, and cosy in winter. “As I’m always hosting dinners and love having guests drinking and chatting while I cook, I wanted this to be an open and alluring space for friends to relax. “The island bar is where everyone gravitates - it’s not only a ‘chill and chat’ zone, it’s a place to work, read and have breakfast and so upholstered comfortable chairs are an essential.â€?
The dining area has its own character deďŹ ned by a large oak farmhouse-style table which Hoppen designed. DeďŹ ne how a bedroom will be used and consider
whether it will also function as a dressing room and extra private lounging area, she says. In Hoppen’s compact bedroom, a low, wide headboard and integrated bedside units help give an illusion of more space. “A bedroom is a treasured place, the ultimate comfort zone, and should be designed to please all your senses,â€? says Hoppen. “It’s your sanctuary and must be warm and inviting with lots of texture. My own bedroom is my hiding place and I’ve used a calm, taupe palette and concealed lighting to give the room a warm, seductive glow.â€? Hoppen loves: Adjustable lighting which gives you the freedom to alter the atmosphere to suit mood, shutters that ďŹ lter daylight softly and allow privacy, and fabrics such as linen, velvet and satin for a luxury look, plus a dressing table for jewellery and treasured possessions. S
some years ago I had a large oil-on-canvas portrait of a lady, obviously of noble background and, in her day – that is of the later 17century – of considerable beauty. It was a fine example of a typical set piece of time; she is holding, rather dramatically, a scantily clad child who clearly wants to play with a small dog, and all are within swathes of luxurious drapes. In a well-preserved condition and in its original carved wood and gilt frame, it was not long before it caught the eye of someone who recognises a good picture. A deal was struck and the picture was delivered and hung in a place just made for it. And so began one of those great friendships that grow from common interests, although this buyer had enjoyed a few more interests than I, and I thought mine were varied enough. e customer and later to become friend was Laszlo Grof, a beguiling Hungarian who arrived in England in 1956 and without any English found employment first as a cook and then as a steel worker in an iron foundry, then into the mine as an explosives expert. Next came a spell as a furniture maker for Messrs Gomme in High Wycombe working on their famous ‘G Plan’ range, before turning his hand to running his own chicken farm. Settling down to become a qualified accountant Laszlo then went to Oxford to receive a degree with honours in history and has just completed his 8th tour of Transylvania lecturing on his favourite subject, the history of cartography. In this field Laszlo is one of the leading authorities on ancient maps with a collection envied by museums and connoisseurs all over the world. In the field of music he is a keen jazz buff and has been in the audience on several occasions

late and much lamented John Dankworth and his still-singing wife the fabulous Cleo Lane. So time spent with Laszlo is never silent and while visiting him last year I noticed and
Zoltan’s technique of using enamel-oil, give his paintings the power of colour achieved by traditional oils, with the luminescence of light and shade created by the modern medium of lacenamel. Zolton developed his skills and love of the medium as a student. e impressionist traditions of the famous Hungarian Nagybanya School which was founded as an artist’s colony in 1896 by Simon Hollosy, was the spark from which Zoltan developed his passion and skills to produce the vibrant and atmospheric paintings. In 2001 Zoltan was commissioned to create 24 large scale pictures for UNESCO, each commemorating the cities, towns and villages given World UNESCO status. His paintings are in numerous private collections in Hungary and abroad. At the time of writing we are holding an exhibition of Zoltan’s work in the grand Bedford Room at Woburn Abbey, the first we hope of many. We all meet fascinating people from time to time but there can be few occupations like mine where you have the opportunity to learn just how fascinating they really are and how they act as catalysts for other people with varying talents in such disparate fields.

utumn chills can easily be banished by the popular new trends in homeware emerging on the high street. ere's something for every taste from modern to vintage and, even if a complete makeover is beyond your budget, it's perfectly possible to echo styles in key, affordable pieces or accessories with impact. "Blame it on TV's Mad Men, but our appetite for all things Fifties and Sixties is insatiable," says Isobel McKenzie-Price, editorial director of Ideal Home magazine. "at's one of the key trends and at the other end of the scale, but equally strong, is the New Victorian decor, inspired by our yearning for the security and stability of past eras and a certain nostalgia." An eclectic country style, celebrating the beauty of one-off treasures, rustic wood and natural materials will also continue to charm, she predicts, while glamour, sparkle and shine is guaranteed to star in fashionable homes next year. "I think all these styles have real staying power - not just for the season but right through 2012," she predicts. Follow her guide to the four top trends for home decor.

MAKE IT MODERN Cool design classics from the Fifties and Sixties are enjoying a revival and are must-have pieces for contemporary rooms. "Mid-Century Modern is the perfect look for our time - simple, pared-back, elegant, and seriously stylish in an unassuming way," says McKenzie-Price. "It's a look that really is timeless, and perfectly suited to our smaller living spaces too, which is probably why it's such a winner." is time around, she says, it's interpreted in a pared-back Scandi-style, so avoid wacky graphics and kitsch colours, and simply allow statement furniture pieces to star, and team with a chalky neutrals colour scheme, subtle patterned wallpapers, and injections of moody ochre colours. Follow the trend: "You can always tell if a trend has staying power when the big retailers commit to it," says McKenzie-Price. O
rigin has been in the business of constructing indoor and outdoor swimming pools for over thirty years. In that time they have progressed from simple timber buildings to the impressive architect design schemes of today. To celebrate this anniversary Origin has commissioned a total redesign of their visual identity. This includes a bright new logo, excitingly updated publicity material and van fleet, and an interactive user-friendly website. To accompany this flurry of activity the company has produced an all new colour brochure, showing as never before the breadth of Origin's capability. Covering all the styles that this unique British company has become known for, from classic original styles to custom designed extensions that are a true product of yours and Origin's combined thinking, the brochure is economical with words, letting the beautiful pictures tell the story. Origin has also committed to an occasional newsletter, NewsWave, to announce the latest and greatest improvements the company has been working 54

on, and of course show the pick of the recent triumphs. Add a monthly emailing, Origin eNews, and the new publicity thrust is complete ready to take on the next thirty years! But the caring attention to detail, the meticulous, design work and the insistence of only using the finest materials available hasn't changed. The company still handles every element of the process, without bringing in any outside experts whatsoever. From the first meeting, to the sketch ideas produced as a result, to the architectural drawings and finished visuals, to the guidance through the planning process, to the earthworks, the building and completing. Origin takes the process from beginning to end -
and all you have to do is jump into the state-of-the-art heated pool at the end of it all. Origin has become Britain's longest established, best known pool company because they have accepted every challenge, crossed every hurdle, and with great experience and ingenuity created a product that is considered second to none, by customers and the pool industry alike. The architects and designers are seasoned players in their fields, and bring a wealth of experience to every aspect of this complex and demanding business. Even the teams who build the final pool houses are eminently professional, many having been involved since the very early days of the company. Building an indoor pool house is a complex business, so many of Origin's buildings are based on the company's established styles. For example,
The Panorama has a light, airy construction with a bright hipped glazed lantern roof – and is built from solid timber with an optional brick or rendered facing, to co-ordinate with the style of your home. The Barn has all the appearance and appeal of a country barn conversion, but built to state-of-the-art standards to be the home for a superb heated pool. The Sirius has exceptional designer looks and a wide expanse of glass bringing a real indoor/outdoor feel to your swimming. These established style-inspired pool houses come in a wide range of standard sizes, and the heated pool will be in a style of your choice. Origin is recognised as the foremost designers of one-off buildings and extensions, designed and developed to co-ordinate with their surroundings perfectly. Materials and finishes are carefully matched with the existing structure – so the finished result is a handsome extension to the property, hiding a luxurious heated pool. To do full justice to Origin's expertise they include outdoor pools as part of their remit. The company is famous for creating pool houses, but they are all too aware that many people prefer to swim in the sun (or under the stars) and an outdoor pool can be one of the most aspirational features a home can have. The level of skill and understanding of pool technology has helped Origin to become one of the country's foremost outdoor pool providers. Origin's new logo has a strapline "The original indoor & outdoor pool company." Get in touch, and find out just why the original is usually the best. Origin Leisure Harefield Middlesex UB9 6TH Telephone 01895 823366 or email info@originleisure.com for the new brochure, or to be included in future distribution of NewsWave and Origin eNews.
