A funny and poignant autobiographical play by John Mortimer (creator of Rumpole of the Bailey) about growing up in the shadow of his blind and eccentric father. e Father's days are spent trouncing the opposition in Court; his evenings hiding from visitors and the ritual of drowning the earwigs that plague the garden he tends but cannot see. At teatime he regales his long-suffering family with his views on music-hall songs, adultery, evolution, the ridiculous inconvenience of sex, Shakespeare and the importance of avoiding the temptation to do anything heroic in wartime. e play introduces us to a gallery of memorable and often hilarious characters and offers a delicate exploration of the relationship between fathers and sons. First performed in 1971 with Alec Guinness and Jeremy Brett as the father and son, the play was also filmed with Laurence Olivier and Alan Bates, and revived by the Donmar in 2006 with Derek Jacobi. Buckhurst Hill to BAFTA INTERVIEW WITH JAMES LAMONT WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

J

ames Lamont is an internationally celebrated, award winning children’s writer. As a member of the Avon House alumni, he recently visited the school as part of Dyslexia Awareness Week. Also Avon House recently celebrated their 30th Anniversary. James met current pupils and in the process, received a Certificate of Excellence from the school! Writing credits include: e Amazing World of Gumball (Cartoon Network) – BAFTA award 10 0’Clock Live Armstrong and Miller Show - BAFTA award Creator of the spoof magician – David Zanthor. Michelle Harris: Why did you visit the Dyslexia Centre at Avon House? What’s your personal connection? James Lamont: I went to Avon House at the beginning of primary school when I was either 3 or 4 years old. I then transferred to St. Aubyns. Michelle Harris: What happened when you were diagnosed with dyslexia in 1989. James Lamont: I went to Avon House’s Dyslexia Centre on a weekly basis and worked with Fay Cookson, who was my 1-2-1 tutor. Michelle Harris:What happened after you left school? How did you get into comedy writing? James Lamont: I was always interested in creative writing and comedy, plus I have always been a bit of a joker… Aside being an incredibly nice guy, James has an endearing and infectious chuckle James continues: …I received a lot of support from Avon House who helped me to believe in myself and as I went on through school – I became better at writing. Originally I wanted to perform and did that for quite a long time. en I wrote a lot of sketch shows and performed at Edinburgh and London until offered a job with a production company. Originally video editing, I was able to support my writing. Michelle Harris: And then you met Jon Foster… James Lamont: As soon as I met Jon, we immediately hit it off. e company we were both working for were so constricting, that we decided to write on our own. It was frightening and certainly had its moments of terror. en we got an agent and it spiralled from there. Michelle Harris: It’s absolutely inspirational that despite dyslexia, you’ve launched a highly successful career as a writer. Where are you at the moment? James Lamont: I currently work as a professional writer for film and television and last year won a BAFTA in the 'best writer' category at the 2011 children's BAFTA awards for my work on a cartoon show: 'e Amazing World of Gumball' (Cartoon Network). I have also written for numerous TV shows (all comedy) including Armstrong and Miller for BBC1 and School of Comedy for C4. Michelle Harris:What’s current? James Lamont: Currently I am working on a film with Harry Hill which is scheduled for release some time next year.

Mrs. Sheila Ferrari (Headteacher of Avon House School) with James Lamont. Reproduced with kind permission of Avon House School.

Michelle Harris: Any words for Avon House’s Dyslexia Centre? James Lamont: A big thanks for setting me on the right path and making me feel like anything was possible, and especially that dyslexia is not a disability. I sometimes wonder if my career path would have even been possible… Michelle Harris: And do you have a personal message for any other children with dyslexia? James Lamont: e school gave me confidence to pursue a career on paper, which should have been very difficult. You should not have narrow horizons. Dyslexia gives you a certain freedom; a unique approach to creative enterprises. ere are a lot of dyslexics in the creative industries. Avon House is also very proud of their celebrated alumni. Mrs. Sheila Ferrari (headteacher of Avon House) commented: “My 44 years at Avon House has been a privilege and a joy, enabling me to express my passion to help children grow in so many ways. Watching them develop healthy self- esteem, respect, tolerance and a sense of humour (a very necessary attribute) continues to enrich my life every day.” So Good Luck to James – hopefully more BAFTAs on the mantelpiece, together with his Avon House - Certificate of Excellence. s charities struggle with reducing donations – Haven House was pleased to receive £6,000 from the congregation of South Woodford Mosque in Mulberry Way, South Woodford. Although the hospice is multi-faith, approximately 40% of the children are Muslim, hence the visit from the Imam and developing education about the faith, and how to help the children and their families. Haven House is based in Woodford Green and their work is to support children and young people from ages 0-19 with life-limiting conditions and who are unlikely to reach adulthood. Support is also given to their families by a range of professional and caring services. Quoting from their website: “A children's hospice is a place where a child comes to live life as fully as they are able and we are privileged to be a part of this experience.” Haven House was built in 1906 and is a beautiful and peaceful building within a quiet natural and woodland setting. e hospice also supports families when sadly, the children pass away and they need support and understanding. Regarding the donation, chief executive officer, Mike Palfreman stated: “We were delighted to welcome Dr Fahim, the Imam of South Woodford Mosque, to a recent staff event. It is important to us as a children’s hospice, to ensure that we are able to support children and families from all faiths in the most appropriate way and Dr Fahim was able to advise us. “I then had the pleasure of speaking to Dr Fahim’s congregation who were extraordinarily generous in contributing over £6,000 towards our charity – we typically receive about a third of the monies we need from government, and therefore have to raise well over £1m each year from fundraising. “e generosity of the congregation was wonderful and will make a significant difference to our work”.

local life

Remembrance Day and Epping’ s Fallen Heroes THE PERSONALITIES AND LIVES OF EPPING’S LOST HEROES HAVE BEEN CAREFULLY RESEARCHED THROUGH ARCHIVES AND NEWSPAPERS. JOHN DUFFELL HAS PUT TOGETHER, AN INTERESTING PROJECT ABOUT THE 150 EPPING SERVICE PERSONNEL WHO DIED IN ACTION, DURING WORLD WARS I AND II.

INTERVIEW BY MICHELLE HARRIS Michelle Harris: How did the project start? What was the inspiration? John Duffell: As secretary of the Royal British Legion branch, I had the responsibility, as part of Remembrance Day, to present a list of these heroes. I had the names but I wanted to know more, who they were and where they lived. I was fascinated by their stories. Michelle Harris: And what was your overall, initial impression? John Duffell: I was struck by their young ages. Although they should have been 18, the army would sometimes ignore as they needed the troops. e youngest to die was Horace Barker, aged just 15 and it’s this story that struck me the most. He drowned in 1918 when his ship was struck by a German torpedo. Michelle Harris: Any other poignant stories? John Duffell: Albert and Joseph Gould of Ivy Chimneys. Brothers who enlisted into different regiments but both died on the same day in May 1917. When John told me this story, I felt a painful surge of emotion. As a mother, I can only imagine the grief felt by the parents. Every death is a tragedy but two in the same family and on the same day, is truly horrendous. John Duffell: For me personally, there is also another emotional story. Edward Davis from the World War I list. He lived at 44 St. John’s Road. My grandparents lived in this house and had purchased it from the Davies family. Also, 23 year old Alf Turner and his friend Leslie Hammond aged 22. School friends together, they joined the Epping Fire Brigade and then signed up to the Royal Army Service Corps in 1939. ey both died together as part of the Dunkirk operation in 1940. Michelle Harris: Are there any families or local businesses that are linked to fallen soldiers? John Duffell: Yes. Stuart Poulton has two relatives on the memorial wall. In fact, for the service he’s making a contribution by taking responsibility for the printed material. David has also given me some letters from his relative in World War I.* Michelle Harris: Would you say the letters were a good indication of life on the battlefield? John Duffell: Definitely. e letters, especially in World War I from 1914-1915 are very enthusiastic; the boys were excited about their adventure. But letters dated from 1916 show a very different picture. e mood changed from the trench experience. Most of these boys had never been out of Epping and the reality of war is very evident in their letters home. Michelle Harris: Any last thoughts on the project? John Duffell: I suppose that it’s important these heroes are remembered and honoured… not forgotten. Especially as the last veteran died last year. ere’s nobody left so it’s important for

youngsters to be familiar with the names. In fact, St. John’s School asked me to be a speaker and they also named some of their houses, after fallen servicemen. I was so pleased they did that. LOCAL PROPERTY

Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET TIME TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE As the leaves fall fast from the trees and the Christmas decorations in streets and shops begin to appear. Property pundits such as I begin to reflect on the past ten months and prepare for our end of year report. In the case of our local property market, I may as well ask my publishers to save me the trouble of composing a diatribe and just reprint the page from last January’s issue, for failing the miracle of this present, albeit well meaning yet inept, inexperienced and some what incompetent Government, coming up with some imaginative plans that not only work but work quickly, confidence will not be restored to either the residential or commercial property market. As I write a truly damning report has been issued by my good friend e Lord Michael Heseltine, in response to the governments request for a review for strategy and growth. I have not yet had the chance to digest his comments but by all accounts it will make interesting reading. However, like all written commentaries whether bad or good, this like others before or after will end up as tomorrows Fish and Chip paper unless someone, somewhere picks up the baton and runs with it. Having got that off my chest, what of the local market? e good news is that Banks and Building societies are being far more understanding than they were in 1990, by finding imaginative ways of keeping families that are finding life difficult to hold onto their homes. I hope I am not being too ingenuous in saying that a measure of their generosity stems from the fact that foreclosures would only encourage property prices to

MONTAGUE HOUSE

BROOK RISE

“WAKE UP TO THIS VIEW”

fall even further thereby dramatically crystallizing their book debt! Regrettably such generosity is not equally displayed in their willingness to splash the cash when it comes to handing out mortgages, or giving a decent rate of return on investments. Substantial deposits are demanded from all, save those purchasing property for their first time purchase and then only to those purchasing below the ridiculously low budget for this area of £250,000. Interest only loans are virtually non-existent, thereby

increasing monthly repayments substantially. e only meaningful loans available to borrowers over the age of fiftyfive are those of an equity release nature, and if you are one of the lucky few who are looking at property in excess of two million pounds you better have at least one million in your back pocket. (It may be as well to have it there with interest rates paid to normal investors being as low as they are) Needless to say such draconian measures will be considered by many (mainly those happily tucked up in bed each night in their fully paid up home) as necessary measures or at the much used word by the last Prime Minister that contributed to the mess we in as prudent. In my view however, it will continue to depress market values and more importantly deter activity which is in many ways the keynote to progress. Fewer and fewer people are contemplating moving up the property ladder and those fortunate to be able to do so

make up a very small portion of the market which according to our own local figures is only around 30% of the size it was pre 2007. Because the squeeze is now biting hard into the formally considered “well off ” families, they, when trying to trade down are looking for larger and larger differentials between their sales and purchase in order to bank this “nest egg” which was always considered as their pension. ereby overvaluing their current asset and ruling out any chance of moving. Regrettably weak and inexperienced agent’s driven by the fear of failure to get property onto the books of their hard-pressed Agency bosses, pander to their clients need for cash by saying whatever the owner wants to hear. ereby yet another home hits the market at an inflated figure and fails to find a buyer as well as encouraging the next owner wishing to sell to use this as a benchmark for their own opinion of value, and so it goes on. Regrettably, I do not have space in this edition to offer a solution to the problem right now, however, with four weeks to think about it I will try and come up with some suggestions for the next edition of this magazine. In the meantime should require help in buying, selling, renting or finance, please don’t hesitate to call. Phillip Leigh is principal of Phillip Leigh Associates of Chigwell. ibrant and full of exciting opportunities, either for a great evening out or a relaxing weekend – Brentwood offers a full assortment of possibilities and treats. anks to the talent of JK Rowling, children’s books are popular and revitalised. As kids are encouraged to read and take pleasure in a literary world, a new bookshop has opened near Brentwood’s High Street – e Chicken and Frog. Owned by Jim and Natasha Radford, their idea for an independent bookshop has been a dream for almost 22 years. Aside being a bookshop, they offer tuition, events and lots of reasons to just ‘pop in’ if in Brentwood. e High Street has a range of shops that suit all tastes and budgets and with a full range of shopping and eating varieties. A mix of restaurants and bars to choose from that offer a range of interesting, international 22

cuisine. You will find the Italian restaurant Zizzi, Slug and Lettuce, Nandos plus a mouth-watering selection of bakeries. ere is also an olde fashioned sweet shop, reminiscent of Willy Wonka and e Chocolate Factory. You can embrace your childlike spirit in this wonderfully, exciting, taste and tongue-teasing, sweet shop. For those interested in new menus, e Greyhound Pub is offering warm and exciting new menus. Especially as winter’s chill is now being felt and the nights are getting darker and earlier. For those counting down until Christmas lights illuminate the High Street - this year’s ‘Lighting Up Brentwood’ is Saturday 1 December between 12p.m. – 6 p.m. As part of the celebration, BBC Essex, Phoenix FM and local groups will be performing on the main stage near Wilson’s Corner. Activities include tap-dancing turkeys, snowball sprites and

street performers. Crown Street will have a reindeer and there will be a Christmas Window Competition. Children can participate in the Secret Santa Christmas Treasure Hunt by looking for hidden treasure in the High Street. is event will be supported by the local Federation of Small Businesses, Brentwood Chamber of Commerce, Brentwood Rotary Club, Sugar Hut, local Street Pastors and Churches Together, Baytree Centre and Crown Street retailers. For Christmas parties and festive fun, the Black Horse Pub (Brentwood) is preparing lively events to celebrate a ‘Sparking Festive Season’. For those interested in theatre, a top West End actor, Gary Tushaw, is offering a workshop on Sunday 18th November from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at Brentwood eatre. With experience working in London, his most famous role was as Marius, in Les Miserables

As We Enter November… WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

As we go into the last few months of 2012 it feels eerily fast, the speed at which we seem to have raced through the year. ree major events: Queen’s Jubilee, the Royal Wedding, the 2012 Olympics, now feels like history. As GB held the world’s centre stage, we put on three great shows which excited and enthralled billions of people. Yet now it’s over… It’s been one big party but now it’s metaphorical, sodden confetti on the floor. Olympic brochures either filed as souvenirs or already dumped. Memories now fading as to who won all the golds, the nights are getting darker and earlier, and there’s a wintery chill in the air. From the photographs of a beautiful bride to those illicit photographs of topless Kate on a balcony with Wills. Even Party-Happy-Harry in Vegas was not spared the world’s thirst for a naked royal. I personally, felt rather saddened by those images and felt it undermined the Royal Family’s achievements and celebrations, especially this year. As for Harry’s security, if compromising himself with strangers is a worthy consideration for Royal Family or national concern, if everybody was down to almost birthday suits, where could a weapon have been concealed? Perhaps that’s an idea that should not be explored! And let’s be honest, every young man’s dream would be beautiful women, almost naked, in a top Vegas hotel, dancing, laughing and enjoying fun-filled-frolics. So did he really do anything that bad and was this a situation that really merited worldwide press? Or was there a tad of jealousy for a privileged young man, enjoying the joys of this station? Or on the flip side of all our royal publicity, was an insatiable thirst for an opportunity to see them naked! If only everybody respected: ‘What happens in Vegas – stays in Vegas…’ We live in an age of voyeurism where everything is accessible via print, television and especially

internet, so selectively we choose the memories we want to keep and Michelle Harris reflect upon, and those best forgotten. So what’s the next step – how do we follow on from the year so far? I suppose not forgetting the year but making a point of reliving celebrations and highlights as part of the year’s climax and finale. is was truly a year to remember and next month, my column will summarise my preferred editorials this year. But certainly, as we prepare 2012 celebrations (assuming the world does not end on 21st December!) I must confess, I do not have a bunker in case of such a catastrophe, so if anybody would like to offer theirs to my nearest and dearest, contact details are at the bottom of this feature!! As for Essex and 2012 – it’s been an interesting year. We’ll never forget when the world came to town. e buzz in Westfield as international Olympians graced our locale…

New Breakfast Club IS TOAST OF PRIMARY SCHOOL WORDS: CHRISTINE BAKER. PICTURE BY STEPHEN POVER.

brand new breakfast club launched at Shelley Primary School in Ongar last month. Twenty five hungry young students celebrated the first Gracelands Breakfast Club in partnership with Greggs bakery which means there are no extra costs for parents. As a corporate partner of the BBC Children in Need Appeal, last year raising over £1 million, Greggs plc brought along cartoon characters Pudsey Bear and their own charity champion Hope to get the breakfast celebrations off to a great start. e Chipping Ongar school will host the breakfast club in the school hall with breakfast consisting of toast, cereal, yoghurt and fruit all served up by parents, grandparents and volunteers from the school. Local church St Martins is sending volunteers one day a week and a member of staff has volunteered to come in early each morning to help. e breakfast club is set to open five mornings each week from 08.15 to 08.50 and all bakery produce will be supplied by Greggs Brentwood branch. Lesley Lewis, Head teacher at Shelley School said “We are thrilled to be the first Primary School breakfast club in Epping Forest supported by Gracelands and Greggs. We know this is going to give our young people a great start to their day and the number signing up means they really want to have breakfast together.” Gracelands Complete Maintenance Services Ltd, based in the Loughton Seedbed Centre, has got together with the Greggs Foundation in a local community project that will benefit both hungry tums and busy Mums.

Gracelands provides gas, heating and electrical maintenance services for local authorities, social housing associations, schools, commerical organisations and private domestic customers. It actively supports local schools and colleges by providing workplacement opportunities that can lead to offers of apprenticeships. Deniz Mustafa, Manager at the company and father of a young daughter said “We are a family business and our role within the local community is extremely important to us. We believe breakfast clubs are a great idea and we all know that quality food at the right time makes for better concentration throughout the day. We are delighted to pilot this new project in partnership with Greggs Foundation.” e partnership will provide funding, equipment and supplies for the new breakfast club for the next three years. is means Greggs and its partners currently support 196 Breakfast Clubs nationwide providing more than 9,000 children with a free breakfast every school day in areas of social deprivation. Greggs Foundation Manager Jackie Crombie said: “Greggs are delighted to be working in partnership with Gracelands to open the first breakfast club in Epping Forest. What makes this scheme unique is that we provide a free breakfast, it’s open to all, and parent volunteers help to run the clubs, keeping the costs down and bringing the school closer to the local community. utumn is the traditional season for school open days and the Oak-Tree Schools are no exception. eir pupils are always proud to show visitors around and give them the inside story on what it is like to be a pupil at Normanhurst, Coopersale Hall or Oaklands. Normanhurst School in North Chingford experienced extremely high numbers of prospective families looking for entry at Nursery, Junior and Senior levels. e 11+ entrance procedures and GCSE programmes were particularly popular given the results over recent years. About the school, firework night came early as chemistry students enjoyed demonstrating their explosive experiments in their brand new chemistry lab and many of the pupils showed off the new technology in the ICT Suite. e head boy and girl spoke movingly about their experiences at Normanhurst and with a combined 27 years – they are well qualified to speak. At Epping’s Coopersale Hall School, record numbers of new families came from Epping, eydon, Abridge and Chigwell, as well as surrounding villages, to see the school in action. Visitors were escorted around the 7 acre site by Year 6 pupils and heard about the school from the children’s perspective. New families

commented on the vast array of resources that include brand new purpose-built classrooms and the characterful, oak-panelled manor house steeped in history. Headmistress Kaye Lovejoy spoke to parents and children about the personalised education on offer at the school, and about the new-style Lower Kindergarten that has seen a boom in numbers with the introduction of afternoon sessions. At Oaklands in Loughton, following the recent 75th Anniversary Celebration, many old Oaklandians returned to register their own children for school. e older pupils acted as guides and were ideal ambassadors for the school with their exemplary manners, presentation and confidence. Headmistress Cheryl Macnair chatted with parents over coffee after their tours and commented, “It’s always so nice to meet new parents and their children to talk about the education we offer at Oaklands. We operate waiting lists to get into the school and even had registrations from expectant mothers yet to give birth!” If you missed the open events at the Oak-Tree Schools and can’t wait until the next events in March 2013, visit www.oaktreeschools.co.uk to arrange a personalised tour with your local school’s Headmistress ■

WHAT’S COOKING AT INTOTO?

A

state-of-the-art Neff cookery demonstration was held at Intoto Kitchens in Loughton High Road on Saturday 20th October to show customers how to get the best from their appliances. Owners Devyan and Alpa Joshi invited existing and potential customers into their Kitchen showroom to watch Neff Home Economist Ruth use the latest culinary technology to cook an assortment of recipes including quesadillas, pizzas, fruit tartlets and chocolate cookies. Visitors had the opportunity to ask questions, view the showroom and most importantly, sample the food! e store also decided to support the Chigwell Riding Trust to give the charity a helping hand throughout the next 12 months, to try to raise as much money as possible for the trust, which was the first riding school in the world set up for people with special needs and currently has about 160 riders each week. Devyan, whose store is part of the UK’s biggest kitchen retail franchise, said: “As a local

business, we feel strongly about giving something back to the community, and we’re really pleased to get our year of fundraising for the Chigwell Riding Trust off to a great start. e trust does such brilliant work for so many people in and around the community and we just decided to help them however we could. It was good to see so many people at our store for the event and hopefully we can build on it to raise as much money as possible throughout the year.” About 50 people attended and a total of £200 was raised for the Trust by a raffle held at the event. BOND IS BACK EVERYONE LOVES A BADDIE AND THEY DON'T COME MUCH BIGGER THAN A BOND VILLAIN. SPANISH ACTOR JAVIER BARDEM, WHO PLAYS JAMES BOND'S BLEACH-BLOND ADVERSARY IN SKYFALL, RECENTLY RELEASED, TALKS ABOUT HIS CHARACTER'S DISTINCTIVE LOOK, TAKING DANIEL CRAIG ON AND BEHIND-THE-SCENES ACTION. BY SUSAN GRIFFIN

Looking every inch the debonair spy, in a navy suit with gold pocket handkerchief, Daniel Craig seems as proud as punch. And no wonder - he is promoting the launch of the latest Bond movie Skyfall, the 23rd instalment in the longest-running film franchise of all time which is currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. e stakes could hardly be higher as Craig dons the iconic tuxedo once again. "I love playing Bond, it's an honour and I get a big kick out of doing it," says 44-year-old Craig. It's his third outing as the legendary secret agent, following Casino Royale in 2006, which saw the actor bring a dramatic depth to the MI6 man, and Quantum Of Solace two years later. "I had an opportunity when they gave me Casino Royale to sort of wipe the slate clean, because they said we were starting again," says Craig. "Bond's a soldier, a person who tries to hide his emotions and be in control all the time, and playing around with and pushing those boundaries is interesting." As a huge fan of the franchise, Craig insists he's always wanted to bring back certain elements that the films are famous for - and what better time than in its golden anniversary year? 34

NOVEMBER2012

e result is an epic movie, laden with glamour in the shape of the mysterious Severine (Berenice Marlohe) and field agent Eve (Naomie Harris), a brilliant villain in the bleach-blond vision of Silva ( Javier Bardem), a sprinkle of kitsch, plus gadgets galore thanks to the welcome return of Q, played by the king of geek chic, Ben Whishaw. And of course, Bond wouldn't be Bond without a streak of droll humour, something that's been missing in Craig's two former outings. "I love Mike Myers but he really ruined it for us [in the spoof spy Austin Powers movies] because he took the best Bond gags," says Craig. "But I always maintained that if we could get really good writing then the jokes would come, and they have in this." e laughs are never to the detriment of Bond's emotional journey though, in keeping with the visions of Sam Mendes, the Oscar and Olivier-winning director who helms this gargantuan movie. "I put everything that I ever wanted to put in a Bond movie into this movie," says grey-haired Mendes, 47, looking relaxed in jeans and a jumper.

"ere were times when I thought this is no way to make a living because the pressure never seemed to let up, but it's like childbirth. You get to the end of it and think, 'Oh, that wasn't so bad'!" ere is no bigger Bond fan than Mendes as far as Craig's concerned. It was at a party in New York in 2009 when the pair, who first worked together on the gangster movie e Road To Perdition, first talked about collaborating again. "I was picking his brains about the next Bond movie because I respect him as a director and I think he has great ideas," Craig recalls. "As the conversation went on, we said the things we loved about Bond and I ended up offering him the job, which isn't my job to do," he adds, laughing. e timing couldn't have been more perfect for Mendes. "I wanted to come back to England to make a movie. I wanted to make a big-scale movie, to work with Daniel again, and I needed a challenge," he says. But unlike the film's protagonist, the road to Skyfall has been far from smooth as financial problems at the MGM studio sparked doubt as to whether Bond

move, but those who've seen it are as thrilled by that as they are with an action sequence, and that for me was the great challenge of this movie," says Mendes. Bardem, 43, who won an Oscar for his dark role in No Country For Old Men, was surprised by the relaxed environment on set. "Sometimes it felt we were doing a very low-budget independent movie," he says. "We were messing with the scenes, playing around, getting it wrong, getting it right and it was a delight and that was all Sam." It was Craig who first approached Bardem about being part of Skyfall. "I've been a fan since I was a kid but that's not the right reason to do something. "It's really about the material and whether you can bring something to a role," says Bardem, wearing slacks, a shirt and brown corduroy jacket. e blond mop he sports in the film is long gone. On reading the script, the actor found there was a lot to play with. Describing Silva as "an angel of death", he says: "In this case, there is a man suffering, a man full of pain and frustration who simply wants to fix the situation. "Silva has a very personal objective; he's not trying to destroy the world. He's a man seeking revenge and within that journey there was room to be funny or aggressive." Bardem wasn't so keen to throw himself into the stunts. "I had a glimpse of it but I'm a great believer in stunt doubles," he reveals, laughing. "I saw Daniel doing it himself and it was crazy." But as Craig puts it: "I love the fact Bond takes a lot of battering, and so he should - he's an agent." Even when that agent's middle-aged, it seems. A running theme throughout Skyfall is that Bond's getting on a bit. "Well, he is," says Craig, smiling. So it begs the question, how old is too old? "I'm contracted for another two Bond films and that seems a fair number, but I'm not going to make predictions, because people need to go and see the movie and until they do we can't make another one. "But I'm not going to outstay my welcome. Someone else can have a crack at this."

would ever return. In hindsight, this proved advantageous as it gave the team more time to hone the script. "It's possible for a man to be on a personal journey and for there to be an awful lot of action at the same time," says Mendes. "In this movie Bond's pushed to the limit, it kills him in a sense, brings him back and he's a shadow of his former self. "He has to work himself back to who he is, and even the audience don't know what stage of rehab he's reached when Silva says to him, 'Look at you, you're barely held together by your pills and drink'." And so to the mysterious Silva, who's sure to be anointed one of the franchise's most memorable villains. "Javier brings this mischief and relish to the table," says Mendes of Spanish-born Bardem. "When I shot the first scene between Javier and Daniel, I could feel the fun they were having with it and wanted to encourage more." e scene he's referencing, laden with all sorts of tension, is already proving a talking point. "It's a seven-minute dialogue scene in which two people barely

Join The Country Style Alliance SEEK OUT SOME COUNTRY LIVING WITH THIS SEASON'S COSIEST TREND. LISA HAYNES REVEALS HOW TO WORK THE HERITAGE LOOK.

If summer was all about patriotic red, white and blue, then this winter is a celebration of British heritage style. Racing greens, muddy browns and burnt oranges are key tones for this look. e colour palette may be more subdued but it's a winning look for autumn 2012. Tartan, tweed, cosy knits, faux fur and riding boots also feature, making the countryside trend the perfect fashion formula for cosying up on Bonfire Night and seeing you through the colder months. Shake off the city slicker vibe and escape to the country in style.

TARTAN TRADITIONALIST Take inspiration from Downton Abbey by opting for country classics. Look to Kate Middleton's off-duty outfits for ideas - she is right at home in riding boots, traditional knits and outdoorsy waistcoats. is trend is smart and practical, so think flats for country walks and leave stick-in-the-mud heels at home. Checks and plaids are also staples of this style. Hunt out earthy colours and accessorise with a sweeping coat to take to the moors in dramatic Wuthering Heights fashion. If you don't want to look like you're walking your dog, smarten up with some tailoring. A check pencil skirt will give you an instant air of manor house chic.

ENGLISH ECCENTRIC You may have no intention of actually venturing out into the sticks, but that doesn't matter - you can still adopt the country style in a playful way. ink Vivienne Westwood prints. Look to modern tweeds with a flash of bright colour, like teal or orange, that bring the look bang up to date. To really make a statement, try super-sizing your checks. Mixing fabrics and textures is another way to do country cool. Seek checked coats with leather sleeves or tweed jackets featuring velvet trim lapels. Don't be afraid to introduce clashing prints alongside checks, too. is season's dark winter florals will work particularly well for a double trend hit. For a stylish pairing of opposites, mix up countryside woolly knits with sparkly sequins for a look that works for day or night. HERITAGE HESITANT If a tartan overdose is too twee for you, merge town and country style for a much more subtle ensemble. Instead of the statement top-to-toe looks that trotted down the catwalks, adopt one accent piece, like a blanket winter coat or wax jacket. Country outerwear instantly pares down uber-girly dresses, a la Alexa Chung. Give a nod to heritage with the ultimate countryside staple - a hat. A farmer's flat cap might be too much so try a stylish felt fedora with feather trim detail. Accessories like scarves, bags and boots can transform a look for a country edge. Try stomping out in riding boots if you like knee-highs, or Chelsea boots if you find ankle length more flattering.

extra on a costume drama. Either work an outfit, or accessories. Both can be overkill. For authenticity, flat and chunky boots work best with this look so skip the stilettos. Beware of big checks. Stick to fine checks and tweeds if you're conscious of over-emphasising your curves. Heritage is more of a low-key daytime trend so steer clear if you're looking for full-on glamour. If your country get-up feels too dark, add one or two bright contrasting bright colours to make your outfit 'pop'.

HEALTH b EAuTy

Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR GUM DISEASE I had an interesting chat with a patient of mine recently. We were reviewing his X-rays and I explained to him that he had lost a lot of bone around his teeth i.e. he had moderate gum disease which he had not been aware of. is patient did not previously clean between his teeth and had accumulated a lot of tartar deposits beneath the gum levels. is harmful plaque and tartar is the main cause of gum disease, which is a slow and painless process. However, due to a lack of understanding, inappropriate gum treatment from a hygienist in the past, and an ineffective daily hygiene regime at home led to this person’s gum health suffering. Gum disease and bad breath Gum disease and bad breath are also linked. is can be a social problem, unpleasant for others and embarrassing for the person that has it. In 9 out of 10 cases the problem originates in the mouth and not the stomach, as many people believe. Even in the cleanest mouth there are both good and bad bacteria. ese bacteria live off food debris and dead skin cells and create odour-causing compounds called Volatile Sulphur Compounds (VSCs), which cause the bad breath. Gum disease and general health problems Scientific research has also shown that if someone has gum disease, then they have a higher risk of getting heart problems, as well as diabetes. Also, people that smoke have

40

NOVEMBER2012

a higher risk of gum problems and all that can follow.

What are the consequences of gum disease? e main effects of gum disease include bleeding gums, bad breath, loosening of teeth, and movement of the front teeth leading to gaps between the teeth (i.e. a poor appearance). As gum disease progresses, there is a higher chance of getting gum infections, ultimately leading to the loss of teeth. ere are a number of options to replace missing teeth. However, the treatment plan depends on the health and strength of the remaining teeth in the mouth. A removable denture is one option, but many people do not wish to wear a plastic device in the mouth for the rest of their life! It is possible to have a bridge done to replace a missing tooth or teeth. However, this option is only feasible if the anchor teeth are healthy and do not have gum problems themselves. Dental implants can be placed to give an excellent solution for the long term. But, ongoing gum disease destroys the very bone that is needed to support the dental implants! erefore, if teeth with a poor prognosis are removed early on, then there may NOT be a need to do a

bone graft before implants are placed. Also, once implants are placed, the bone tends to stabilize and not resorb away (especially if the person has excellent oral hygiene). How to prevent gum disease and have fresh breath e following are important tips to be aware of: l Brush your teeth at least twice a day l Clean between the teeth every day with floss or small brushes – this will remove the plaque and bacteria that build up. l Gently cleanse the tongue with a tongue cleanser, such as the OOLITT eXcel, which is designed to reach the back of the mouth. 80% of Bad Breath comes from the surface of the tongue. e tongue cleanser should go as far back as you can comfortably go, as the tongue is a major influence on bad breath. l Chew sugar-free gum in-between meals to increase the saliva flow, which helps to reduce the incidence of bad breath. l Avoid over-indulging in spicy foods, garlic and onion. l Reduce the consumption of coffee, tea and alcohol, all of which have a drying effect on the mouth. l Gargle with Ultradex mouthwash. is is an alcohol free mouthwash and suitable for vegetarians. It contains chlorine dioxide, which is scientifically proven to remove the VSCs.

Ultrardex is my number one recommended mouthwash for gum health and fresh breath. l Visit your Dentist and/or Hygienist regularly. Bad breath can be an indicator that there is a problem with the gums, such as gingivitis or periodontitis. At Smile Design By Ash, we have a fantastic hygienist called Jessica who works at our Practice on Mondays and ursdays. We also have our gum specialist (periodontist) called Sonia. She consults and helps patients with moderate to advanced gum disease on a part time basis. We also offer laser gum therapy – a modern way to disinfect the gum pockets around the teeth with gum disease. e special offer for LIFE magazine readers for November 2012 is a FREE scanning large X-ray worth £30 and a complimentary initial consultation for advice and guidance related to any gum problems you may be worried about. HEALTH B EAUTY

DRESS UP & WORK OUT!

Look and feel stylish as you exercise as good. Trainers with sweat-absorbing socks are a good idea, too. A decent sports bra, vest and Capri pants or shorts are all you need when you’re working this hard. Sweat-wicking materials will be your friend with all that bouncing about and good shoes with plenty of cushioning will help minimise impact on your joints. There are many designer labels offering gorgeous sportswear so have a look at what’s on offer. Fashionable fitness wear can provide such convenience by doubling up on glamour aswell as flexibility during high impact aerobic exercise. And don’t forget your water!

Running At this time of year you really need to invest in some full-length running leggings. However, if you keep the rest of your body warm three-quarter leggings will be fine too. You can team them up with layered tops, preferably thermal, to keep the chill out but with breathable under arm mesh panels to help wick away sweat and keep you cool and dry where you need it most. If you’re running in the evening, it is essential you have reflective strips to help you stay safe and be seen by drivers and cyclists.

Dance If you’re doing a dance class or the high energy Zumba, it’s a chance to have a little fun with your workout gear. Choose some bright colours and clothes with lots of stretch. As long as you’ve got the chest support with a good sports bra there are a host of pretty workout tops from which to choose. You can wear any type of fitness clothes…. jogging bottoms, shorts, t-shirts; anything comfortable and cool. As for shoes, wear cross-trainers or dance shoes - anything that will give you support. Also remember the importance of attending every session with plenty of bottled water. If you’re doing a class such as ballet or jazz you will want to invest in a pair of appropriate shoes rather than trainers. You can of course, try these activities at home first to see if they are for you, before you splash out.

The most important piece of kit for new runners are your running shoes. It’s not a good idea to dig out those old tennis shoes from the back of your wardrobe and assume you can run in them. You need fresh, wellcushioned shoes that are designed for running, fit well and match your foot type and running style. Running is high impact and you need to make sure your feet are getting the right support to prevent injury. Many sports shops now offer gait/foot analysis to help identify what type of running shoe will give you the best support. This is the most important purchase a runner would make. There are many reputable sports shops around and Sweaty Betty have a very comprehensive online guide to choosing a shoe that best fits with your body and training needs. Many well-known brands have an extensive selection for you to choose from. And don’t forget your water!

Pilates/Yoga For these classes you need super comfortable clothing that allows your body to move freely but also allows the class teacher to see the shape of your body to make sure you’re carrying out the moves correctly to prevent injury. Depending upon the style of yoga that you perform often dictates what feels most comfortable. So perhaps the word comfortable needs to be explored because in order to become immersed in yoga – you don’t what your yoga clothes to restrict you.

High impact aerobics You should wear clothes that allow your skin to breathe, and you to move freely. We’ve all seen Jane Fonda’s lycra body stockings but for us mere mortals, leggings, light tracksuit trousers and a t-shirt will be just

It is important to be able to breathe into the belly and to be able to stretch and explore new positions without feeling restriction in my yoga practice. Cotton and natural fibres allow the body to breathe and keep the body feeling comfortable when faced with more challenging workouts.

HEALTH BEAUTY

Loose comfortable yoga clothing is important because it allows you to stretch freely in your practice, without feeling limited in your practice. Also sitting in meditation pose for any length of time requires the yoga clothing to give so that you feel free. Having the right length trousers is important too, you don’t want to spend the practice tripping over your hems, especially when working through a salutation. But as all women know you still want to feel good and the yoga clothes needs to flatter you too. One of the important principles of yoga is ‘AHIMSA’ - the principle suggests that we should respect ourselves and all other living beings. So it is important to feel good about yourself, but don’t torture yourself trying to wear the latest fashion – because that is not a principle of yoga. Swimming All we’ll say is string bikinis really aren’t appropriate for aquafit or swimming fast lengths, apart from the fact they are not particularly classy, either! Make sure you try on a few swimsuits as their comfort depends on your body shape. For example you may be short-waisted and long in the rise (that’s the bit from your crotch to your waist) if so, you might find swimsuits leave you hunched and your boobs uncomfortably squashed. The best remedy for this is a tankini. The joy of these are that you can often buy mix and match separates if you have differing size top and bottom halves. If you’re generously blessed in the boob department then an inbuilt bra support will be invaluable. We also find that a halter-neck style is especially flattering for those more shapely. And don’t forget your goggles or swim cap – especially if you have coloured hair. It‘s important that you wear the right gear for outdoor swimming aswell. That means a brightly-coloured swimming cap, swimming goggles and a good-fitting wetsuit. A bright swimming cap will improve your visibility in the water. Cycling So how do winter cyclists handle the cold when riding? Being prepared can be the best way to enjoy the winter weather when biking and stave off potential injuries or illness. So, when preparing for your next ride carefully consider what you’re wearing before you step outside. To best regulate your temperature and keep your performance from being compromised when cycling in winter conditions, follow these easy steps: 1. Layer your clothing so that you can adjust accordingly to the level of exertion and cold that you are feeling. Keep the core of your body warm and dry (from your chin to your

crotch.) by layering your clothing you allow yourself to add, remove or vent layers as your exertion or the temperature change. 2. Avoid cotton fabrics: While cotton may feel good when it’s dry, it also naturally absorbs moisture and prevent air circulation. 3. Use Polyester, Polypropylene, Silk or Wool for base layers. These natural and man made fabrics wick moisture, allow air circulation and dry quickly. 4. Don’t forget to cover your hands, feet, head and neck. These are major areas of heat loss. While you may want to start out without toe warmers or full finger gloves, carrying these small items folded in a jersey pocket can make a big difference in your total body temperature 5. Don’t underestimate wind chill. A good wind blocking exterior layer can keep you from having to dress too bulky. An inexpensive alternative that can give your more seasonal flexibility in your cycling closet can be a lightweight, packable shell or wind vest. These garments can make a substantial difference. The sports bra It doesn’t matter how large or small your breasts are wearing a sports bra while you exercise reduces breast movement preventing sagging and reducing pain. It’s important that you try on sports bras for fit and comfort, so try to do your shopping in person rather than online. Stay away from sports bras that are made of 100% cotton because once you start sweating, they’ll stay wet. If you have a large chest and need a lot of support, look for sports bras with wide shoulder straps and racer back straps. Make sure you try on several different size sports bras. The right size for you may not actually be the cup size that you normally wear. The bra is too big if the material wrinkles or bunches. It should fit snugly but not constrict your breathing. ANGELA'S MAKEOVER PART TWO ACNE AND ACNE SCARS ANGELA SAYS Well after getting over my nerves and having my gummed smile altered I was even more intrigued to find out what else I was missing, as a sufferer of PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) my skin has always played havoc with me. Some days I can look clear and my skins glowing and other days my skin has a major break out and can look greasy and very spotty which happens more often than I would like. Frances had mentioned to me about skin peels, derma rollers and her own selection of products but again like how I felt about the gummed smile I was nervous I had never found a product or face wash that I could use regularly without there being a problem further down the line. Frances has a range called Suisse Absolue which is the latest in must have skin care, stem cell plant technology, she explained how the products and the treatment plan would work, side effects and what to expect. I still wasn't convinced she was going to be able to stop my terrible break outs but I couldn't have been more wrong. We started the skin treatments back in April this year, and have only used the Suisse Absolue skin care range serum pure, cleanser pure, cream soft and daily SPF medium which is a mAke up and SPF in one. Don't get me wrong my skin had to go through a rough patch to get to the good side and boy o boy am I glad I embarked on this journey. As you can see after 6 months of skin treatments and using the products as directed by Frances. I have noticed a huge difference even my friends and family are noticing a huge difference. e spots have gone, the greasy feeling has disappeared and I am feeling happier and lot more confident........now frances has me hooked. I have changed from a non girlie girl to a very happy girlie girl.............thanks frances x FRANCES SAYS It has been a pleasure to help Angela through her gummy smile and skin makeover journey, I find a lot of clients who first come to see me at first are nervous about trying new treatments, let alone trying everything out at once. It is important clients feel comfortable with their practitioner and that they build up a relationship of mutual trust. By helping Angela's gummy smile initially, it gave her the confidence to discuss her skin concerns, I treat a lot of women who suffer with PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) and other hormone related skin conditions such as cystic acne, acne vulgaris, acne rosacea, and rosacea due to the menopause. A combination approach to these skin dilemmas is crucial to the success of the skin responding and being able to repair itself quickly when an out break occurs. As there are no cures for these skin diseases, I am able to use aesthetic treatments, conventional antibiotic therapy she needed and the fantastic Suisse Absolue skin care range which is at the forefront of plant stem cell technology to enable to treat and calm there skin on a daily basis. 44 NOVEMBER2012

TENSION HEADACHES

WHAT CAUSES TENSION HEADACHES? Tension headaches are caused by tension and “Trigger Points” in the muscles of the scalp, neck and shoulders. is may be due to stress, poor posture, repetitive strain from long hours at a computer, muscle spasm due to injury to the discs and joints in the upper spine, as well as some metabolic disorders.

WHAT ARE TRIGGER POINTS? Trigger points are essentially hyper-tight knots in taught bands of muscle that can cause referred pain. e mechanism behind referred pain is similar to a crossed line on the telephone, whereby a nerve ending from a muscle knot is so sensitised that it causes a cross over signal to a different nerve to another part of the body. Common trigger points involved in tension headaches occur at the top of the shoulders (trapezius muscles) and base of the skull, they cause characteristic patterns of referred pain over the side of the head often towards the eye, as illustrated in red in the diagram above.

HOW CAN MANUAL THERAPY HELP TENSION HEADACHES? Your therapist may show you stretching and strengthening exercises to do. However, whilst it is important to correct causal and maintaining factors such as poor posture, exercises alone are not usually enough to get rid of trigger points once they have formed. In the same way that it is necessary to repair a crack in the wall as well as the faulty foundations that may have caused it, direct hands on treatment is usually necessary to facilitated repair and relaxation in relevant Trigger Points. One of the best forms of manual therapy is “Trigger Point Massage”, this takes considerable skill and involves firm, slow, low amplitude, sustained massage strokes with very little or no oil. Massage strokes must be performed in a way that stretches the taught bands of muscles but without irritating the over-active stretch receptors present within Trigger Points. If massage is performed too fast or without firm contact on the muscle bands the result can be like flicking over a guitar string, resulting in increased activity of the stretch receptors, increase in trigger point tension and an increase in tension headaches. However when performed in the right way this method of treatment can be extremely effective not only at reducing chronic muscle tension but also at reducing the oversensitivity in the 46

nervous system present in those suffering from chronic Tension Headaches and associated disorders such as Fibromyalgia. is often allows patients to reduce or in some cases completely stop their muscle relaxant and (neuropathic) pain modulating medication. When combined with “Medical Acupuncture” the treatment effects are usually further enhanced.

WHAT IS MEDICAL ACUPUNCTURE? Medical Acupuncture involves the insertion of relatively few acupuncture needles into relevant trigger points determined from the patients description of their pain and the practitioners palpation. e approach of Medical Acupuncture is more scientific than Traditional Acupuncture. Needles can be used to reach deep bands of muscles that are difficult or impossible to isolate even with finger-tip deep massage. A distinctive “twitch response” is produced when successfully hitting a trigger point, increased blood flow to the area will usually follow, accompanied by relaxation of the trigger point and reduction in it’s referred pain. Pin-point accuracy when inserting needles is essential to achieve this twitch response, if not achieved initially then moving the needle(s) just a millimetre or two can make all the difference to a successful treatment outcome. All the Osteopaths and Physiotherapists at Chigwell Osteopapthy & Physiotherapy Practice are trained in Trigger Point Massage and Medical Acupuncture. FLORENCE AND HER SWEET TEETH WORDS CHRISTINE BAKER

F

lorence Jemmott had plans for her 60th birthday in December last year. Instead of a new car or luxurious gift, Florence decided on a cosmetic dental makeover. “It’s the best thing I ever did” she smiles broadly as she makes plans to celebrate her birthday this year. “I had been thinking about it for some time and then I read in LIFE magazine about some of the people treated by Smile Design by Ash and how thrilled they were with their look - I decided this is for me.” Originally from Antigua Florence found herself in the UK in 1974 with two other students who had been sponsored by the government to come to London to study hotel management. But when the other two went home Florence stayed because by then she had met her future husband. ey set up home in South Woodford and in 1978 they bought a retail business in Hackney and turned it into a highly successful and established shop selling confectionery. e company, JJ Confectionery Ltd, is a local haunt for lovers of old fashions sweets. It also imports confectionery and distributes to wholesalers across the UK. “I didn’t realise I had some 48 NOVEMBER2012

real dental problems lurking in the background” said Florence. Her consultation with Ash included lots of photographs of her mouth, teeth and gums and digital x-rays. ey showed she would need root canal treatments, fillings replaced, three implants, and two bridges followed by some cosmetic contouring and composite work and teeth whitening. Most importantly though Florence decided that a gap between her top front teeth, which had been there all her life, had to go, despite her husband’s protests. Florence’s dental journey took eleven months during which Ash made a mock up of her teeth to show how she would look minus the infamous gap. She says “It made going to the dentist a positive and pleasant experience and you couldn’t be dealing with a nicer man. Ash and his team, including his charming Dad Bhikhu, really are the kindest and most professional people to deal with. I was treated like someone near and dear to him and in fact I was made to feel part of the practice family. I trusted Ash completely in that he was doing what needed to be done in a very caring way and not for financial gain.” Now Florence has a captivating smile which has

been instantly noticed by her customers in the shop. A great fan of listening to music by U2 and Bruce Springsteen during her dental treatments Florence says “I have no regrets. I did this for myself and now I know my mouth is completely healthy. at in itself makes me smile.” Florence will show off her new winning smile to her sisters back in Antigua when she visits this month. While they know nothing about her cosmetic dentistry makeover she laughs that they will instantly notice the gap is gone. No doubt a few sweet treats for them will ease her worries.

TURN UP THE HEAT GET THOSE JOBS DONE WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM DIY GURU JULIA GRAY. THIS MONTH: HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR HOME'S CENTRAL HEATING SYSTEM BY JULIA GRAY

R

eplacing an old boiler with an energy efficient model is one of the best home improvements you can do, but it's expensive and if you can't afford it, could you benefit from changing the radiators instead? If your home's radiators aren't as powerful as you'd like, the first thing to do is bleed them. Radiators containing trapped air are hot at the bottom but cold further up, so they're not giving off as much heat as they should. Bleeding them is easy - simply put a radiator key or small screwdriver (depending on the type of hole) into the bleed valve on the radiator and open the valve to let out the air. is can make a big difference to how hot the radiator gets. Another reason a radiator might be inadequate is if it's not powerful enough for the room, or you need more than one. Radiator output is measured in btus (British thermal units) and to work out the btus required to heat a room, ask a plumber or use an online btu calculator. Calculators vary, but they should factor in the dimensions of the room, the type of room (living rooms need to be warmer than bedrooms, for example) and things like the number of outside walls and the type of window glazing. Some btu calculators take account of more factors than others, so you may get different results. ey may also give a range of btus for the room, rather than one figure. When adding radiators or fitting more powerful ones, check the capacity of the boiler. If the boiler's a modern combi, you shouldn't have a problem, but ask a heating engineer if in doubt. Radiators were traditionally fitted under the window because this was the draughtiest spot and where most heat escaped. With more energy efficient windows, this is less of an issue, and it may not be the most convenient place. More of a consideration is where your furniture is. You don't, for example, want a radiator heating the back of the sofa, rather than the room. In this case, it's best to move the radiator or swap a horizontal radiator for a vertical one, which will take up less space at sofa level. While you can treat rust (use Hammerite Kurust, RRP £8.49 for 250ml, available from www.halfords.com, an easy-to-apply liquid that quickly turns rust black so it can be painted), once radiators start to rust, it's generally time to change them, certainly if the rust might cause them to leak. Replacing old radiators may be something you want to do anyway to get more powerful ones or ones that look nicer. You can often get smaller modern radiators with the same or a greater output than your old ones, 50

NOVEMBER2012

because the materials and technology used today are better. If you're changing the number or position of the radiators, this will be more expensive than swapping them like for like, as the plumber will have to alter the pipework. is is easy to do with exposed original floorboards, because they can be taken up, but other types of floorcovering make getting to the pipes harder. For this reason, it's sometimes better to change the radiators when doing other home improvements, but if this winter proves to be a cold one, you might not want to wait. PRODUCT OF THE MONTH e Really Big Roller Box by Harris (£29.99, Screwfix, www.screwfix.com) is great value and has everything you need to get rollering. You get two paint trays, a tray insert (dried paint can ruin the tray, so it's easier to use and then bin the insert), a useful tray cover, an extension pole for doing ceilings easily, two roller cleaners, three roller frames (a small, medium and large) and different types of roller sleeve to fit them, so you're not stuck if one's in use. e sleeves give a really good finish, but the frames are the stars of the show because not only are they rubberised, they also have finger and thumb grips so you don't get sore hands. If you have a lot of decorating to do, this kit is a brilliant buy. HOW-TO TIP Because radiators should be cold and turned off when you paint them, it's a really good idea to use quick-drying radiator paint at this time of year when you might want to put the heating on. e trouble with a lot of these paints is that the texture makes it hard to get a good finish, but not with Hammerite Quick Drying Radiator Paint in Satin White (RRP £9.95 for 500ml, available from www.wilkinsonplus.com), which is low odour and nice to use. For the fiddly bits, where it's not easy to use a paintbrush, or for column radiators, which are awkward to paint with a brush, use a specialist spray paint, such as Hammerite Radiator Enamel aerosol in Smooth Satin White (RRP £8.80 for 400ml, available from www.amazon.co.uk). is tough paint also dries quickly - do as many thin coats as you need, rather than one thick one, because the paint may sag and run. Both these paints are designed to resist yellowing - if you use normal white metal paint, the heat from the radiator will turn it yellow over time n

FERM LIVING MR & MRS CUSHIONS, £69.95, CLOUDBERRY LIVING (WWW.CLOUDBERRYLIVING.CO.UK).

Lounging in style Known as the living room for good reason; whether you're relaxing after work, watching a movie or entertaining friends, lounges are a vital part of the home. Susan Griffin looks at four key style trends. ere's a reason lounges are known as the 'living room', because they're exactly that. A lounge can really make a house a home - it's a place to relax with loved ones, snuggle on the sofa after a long day's work, or chat with friends, so it's no wonder that it's often the room people prioritise when it comes to decorating. "When picking a style for your lounge, quite often the answer lies in what fits best with what you have got already," says Roger Mears, who set up Roger Mears Architects in 1980 (www.mears.co.uk). "If the building is in a period style, for example, a classic approach could be best. If it's a country house, a traditional feel would sit naturally, rather than imposing these onto a new-build where these might look fake. It's always good to go with the flow, and express a style with honesty." ere are occasions when rules can be bent, though. "Even in the most traditional of settings, there can be a feature that's so outstanding (old floorboards, a period staircase, decorative ceilings) that a monochrome, contemporary minimalist look could really highlight." So treat the above only as a guide. As Roger says: "e final choice should be what resonates with your personality and lifestyle as well as your house, rather than a passing trend."

CONTEMPORARY e contemporary living room should be bright, ooze sophistication, maybe revel in current trends but more importantly provide comfort. "Create a lighter richness and contemporary feel by complementing sumptuous deep colours with clean white lines," suggests Jeremy Garrish, buyer for Carpetright. A striking carpet or a bold wall feature will help to create a particular mood without being overbearing and makes for a family-friendly option as muddy feet are harder to spot. Another option is to use furniture and accessories in similar shades but different textures throughout the room, from sofas and rugs to cushions. "A statement sofa can provide a striking focal point to the room and it's the perfect canvas from which to build a modern scheme," suggests Emma Rackley, upholstery buyer for Furniture Village. Accompany the sofa with sleek furniture (curved edges are popular at the moment) such as coffee and lamp tables, in a contemporary metallic or glass finish. "And use solid, industrial elements that can also be used to create an urban feel while mixing materials such as glass, wood and metal to make the modern scheme feel instantly lived in," says Emma. LOUNGE INSPIRATION: ■ is example from Ikea combines comfort with crisp contemporary lines. "Choosing the right combination of fabrics and colour schemes is key to achieving the right traditional look for your lounge," says Emma. "Muted tones and soft hues combined with classic wooden furniture and classic side lamps will help to bring a traditional feel together." Jeremy adds: "Or add rich, autumnal colours to your floor to create a cosy retreat you'll never want to leave. Match with dark leather furniture and wooden accessories for a traditional feel." Traditional upholstery designs with button back detailing, or a country-inspired fabric, can help complete the look if you're opting for an old-school feel. Or for a more masculine focal point, include a weathered leather armchair, a dark, statement lampshade or paint one of the walls a dusky colour to evoke a sense of depth to the room. F&f Home Ceramic Cable Knit Effect Vase Cream £8.94, Tesco (tesco.com) CLASSIC e key to creating a classic living room is to keep it simple, so forget the chintz. "Classic living rooms draw on many historic design periods but steer clear of the overtly traditional and heavy, by mixing in modern and contemporary designs to create a carefully balanced whole," says award-winning interior designer Katharine Pooley. Art Deco detailing, be it bevelled-edge mirrors, metal inlay joinery, polished marble or specialist geometric ironmongery, lends itself well to the clean lines of a classic interior. "Roccoco-esque precious stone and gilt detailing can also be added in small measure for richness," says Katherine. "e wonderful thing about a 'classical' living room interior is that it is all encompassing. All that it asks is a certain lightness of hand to ensure a balanced space." Carole Brown, director of marketing at Dunelm Mill, agrees: "A classic scheme is brought to life with boutique accessories so add crystal lighting, silk cushions, candles and vases of dried hydrangeas complete the look." A key statement piece, such as the Chesterfield-style Langham sofa, is the best way to bring together a classically styled lounge. "Compliment the trademark deep button back details and elegant roll top arms with a beautiful soft fabric and a combination of neutral classic colourways, to evoke a calming traditional style," says Emma. "Simple colour choices keep the look elegant and the use of glass accessories, simple shapes and soft lighting will all add to a sophisticated living area." HOUSE GARDEN

GIVE BIRDS A BOOST OF BERRIES TIPS ON THE BEST PLANTS TO GROW FOR BERRIES WHICH WILL NOT ONLY ADD COLOUR TO YOUR GARDEN BUT ATTRACT BIRDS AS WELL - PLUS, FIND OUT WHAT ELSE NEEDS DOING IN THE GARDEN THIS MONTH. BY HANNAH STEPHENSON

Gardeners should be continuing to refill their bird-feeders and baths during the cooler months, when the birds really need them, but it's worth looking at some berried treasures to plant in borders as well. Indeed, with some plants, such as pernettya and snowberry, the berries are the main attraction as their flowers are small and insignificant. Don't just think of red when you consider adding a shrub with berries to your garden. eir colours range from white to black and most colours in between. As they contain the reproductive part of the plant, berries are perfect for increasing your stock of plants. e birds have a habit of helping with propagation, by spreading seeds all over the garden. And there are quite a few trees which will provide them with food throughout the autumn and winter months. e rowan tree, mountain ash and whitebeam, which all belong to the genus Sorbus, carry abundant crops of berries from autumn onwards and provide some fantastic autumn leaf colour as well. e golden-berried rowan, Sorbus 'Joseph Rock', provides both colour for gardeners and food for blackbirds with its abundant berry crop. For the best of both worlds, plant a Sorbus sargentiana, which has pinnate leaves which turn brilliant red in autumn, large sticky red buds in winter and huge clusters of white flowers, followed by bright red berries for the birds. Another good garden stalwart that provides masses of fruit is the herringbone cotoneaster, with its dense tapestry of branches and small, glossy leaves also providing good nesting sites for small birds and homes to many of the insects on which they feed. It's a compact, deciduous species bearing pinkish white flowers followed by bright red berries and reaches a maximum height of around 1.5m (5ft) and is particularly suitable for training against

NOVEMBER2012

a sunny wall. If you prefer orange berries, go for the semi-evergreen C. simonsii, which grows a little taller and produces a new set of leaves in mid-autumn which may last until spring. Of course, no berry-rich garden should be without at least two varieties of holly, as they need a male and a female to pollinate. An abundant crop of scarlet or yellow autumn berries should appear as long as a male form of holly is planted near to every three to five female plants. Often persisting through most of the winter, the fruits provide vital cold-weather food for many types of songbird, while deciduous forms with persistent bright red fruits include 'Sparkleberry' and Ilex verticillata 'Winter Red', with its dark green, toothed foliage. Birds aren't interested in all berries, which is just as well, because if you only plant their favourites, you may have little colour left by Christmas. So plant some specimens which the birds will leave alone, such as Skimmia, Aucuba and the guelder rose (Viburnum opulus), which tend to be their least favourites. Ivy berries, which usually ripen later in the winter when food is scarce, are extremely valuable to bids, while crab apples are also appreciated in winter. When considering your food supply for the birds, remember that fruiting wall shrubs including pyracantha and flowering quince will need to be pruned after flowering each year to keep them close to the wall. You may lose a few young berries, but the rest will ripen better and the shrub will look neater if it doesn't outgrow its space. BEST OF THE BUNCH HEDGEHOG ROSE (ROSA RUGOSA) is is another stalwart for wildlife, as the red hips which appear in autumn provide much-needed food for birds. And it's a great survivor, withstanding neglect and harsh treatment and coming back year after year. Derived from the Japanese rose, it has upright, thorny stems and repeat-flowers, producing fragrant magenta or white blooms with a centre of yellow stamens, followed by large, tomato-like hips. Hedgehog roses will grow in any fertile, moist but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Every three to four years, cut out one or two old shoots to the ground in winter. If the shape is becoming untidy, wayward shoots can be shortened at any time. GOOD ENOUGH TO EAT... TIDYING THE ASPARAGUS BED Your tasty asparagus spears harvested from April to June may seem many moons away now, but if you want a better crop for next year, it's time to tidy up the bed and it should only take a few minutes. e asparagus ferns turn yellow as they die down and need to be cut off at ground level to make space for next year's crop. Also remove weeds from the bed as asparagus does not like competition and mulch the soil generously with well-rotted organic matter. Anyone growing asparagus will understand how much space it needs. It's a shallow-rooted perennial crop which doesn't like disturbance and occupies the ground full-time, and it takes a couple of years to settle in. But despite the fact that you can't pick much for the first three years, once established it won't often let you down. If you do get thin spears, it's generally down to weak plants that have been harvested too early, cut too heavily in previous years or not fed sufficiently n

o mark the 75th Anniversary of the historic site of the Pinewood Studios in September 2011 the massive 35ft high Elizabethan fire surround which forms the main entrance was painstakingly restored by students from the Buckinghamshire New University. is was a tricky and prestigious job and the MA. Furniture Conservation, Restoration & Decorative Arts students spent nine days restoring colour and finish to the vast 16th century solid oak structure, bought to Pinewood from Ilam Hall in Derbyshire in 1930. e university has been acknowledged as a source for talent in the various aspects of care and restoration for more than twenty years with many worthy patrons to their credit, but there is traditionally a problem exposing such skills to the commercial world. ank fully that has been addressed by a new enterprise called Bucks Conservation, the aims of which are to channel commercial conservation and restoration projects to BA (Hons) and MA Furniture Conservation, Restoration and Decorative Arts recent alumni. I know about this because I was invited to attend its official launch at Fernandez & Wells, Somerset House, London on Monday 8 October 2012. is was followed by a guided and private tour of e Courtauld Gallery, which if you haven’t visited is well worth the time as it is, as it rightfully claims to be, one of the finest small art museums in the world. So access to educated restoration of our heritage will be more readily available than ever and by no means restricted to furniture. Indeed the massive chandelier in Halton House in Buckinghamshire has just received some tender loving care from some recent alumni and wonderful it now looks indeed. To compliment the growth of interest and talent in restoration and conservation one of the most reassuring things in the last decade has

been the establishment of young artisans creating truly beautiful work in all areas of the decorative arts. At the risk of sounding as if my life revolves around going to launch parties and visiting shows – which I can assure you it does not – I was invited to the opening of PAD. Set within a vast fabric structure in Berkley Square, London, this is without question London’s leading fair for 20th Century art, design and decorative arts. Inspiring a unique spirit of collecting, PAD epitomises how modern art, photography, design, decorative and tribal arts interact to reveal astonishing combinations and create the most individual and staggering interiors. Prominent international galleries from major cities across Europe, North America and Asia come together to offer an exceptional panorama of the most coveted and iconic works available on the market today. Anyone receiving this magazine for more than twelve months may remember that I reported on this last year and was absolutely entranced by the furniture made by the Irish phenomenon Joseph Walsh. He astounded again this year with a ‘shelf ’ sculptured from a multitude of laminates to form as if made of petrified fabric blowing in the wind. is recent fair was by far the best I’ve seen with such innovations that gladden the heart, and a leading gallery in this respect is Pearl Lam Design. At PAD they were

presenting six international artists and designers from very different design scenes, one of whom, André Dubreuil, produced the most amazing fusion of ancient and modern chinoiserie. A major piece entitled Mr Big was a version of the traditional cabinet on stand but what a cabinet and what a stand! Using steel, copper, stone and enamel it’s a ferocious yet beautiful and functional work of Art. In contrast Christian Elwes of Entwistle was showing, from their tyribal inventory a stylized and most elegant ceremonial bird head club, or Poro Wa Ramaru, from the Kanak peoples of New Caledonia. Visually it stops you in your tracks, as no doubt it would if you were hit by it, but it is of such compelling sculptural form that it symbolises wealth and high rank rather than being a combat weapon. Nevertheless stunning in every sense of the word. At PAD there is lighting the intricacies of which defy understanding, décor that makes you want to go home and start again and furniture and accessories that make you smile and covet. Overall it is the imagination and the ingenuity of the young designers and artisans that make for such a great show. I especially like the way so many are taking tradition and twisting it around with new ideas, materials and techniques. Zoe Ouvrier is a name to watch if you are thinking about antiques of the

future. She creates unique pieces from carved wood as well as paintings and lace-adorned decorative screens. Using plywood that has first been painted and then intricately and painstakingly engraved, Ouvrier’s works display the motifs of plant stems and the roots, nodes, and shoots often concealed underground. e resulting artworks are a beautiful tribute to nature and expert craftsmanship. Speaking of which, names and craftsmanship that is, I have recently been reminded of one of the great names in the world of Art Nouveau bronzes, Bruno Zach. Zach was born in the town of Schitomir, Ukrainein in 1891, the year my grandfather formerly established his antiques business in Tring, and died in 1945. He studied at the Vienna Academy and subsequently worked for various foundries in Vienna producing the finest quality bronze works including western, oriental, sporting, animalier, art deco and erotic subjects, sometimes incorporating ivory carved to replicate the unclothed parts of the model. One of his most desirable figures is entitled ‘e Riding Crop’ of which there were two versions. One stands 32 inches high, of which there were more than ninety produced and the other, at just a third of that height, of which no more than six are recorded. Asked to find an example of the latter I went to the one person I know who might help, David Hickmet. David’s Gallery 85 is at that number in Portobello Road and sure enough, and as luck would have it one of his ‘finders’ – David has people all over the world sourcing his speciality – had just located the one illustrated. A perfect example with a patina that guarantees authenticity, just like a piece of my 18th century furniture. So horizons are broadened all the time and with pieces from Elizabeth I to Elizabeth II it’s been a busy month ■

HOUSE GARDEN

A COSY WINTER

RETREAT You don’t always think of retreating to the garden during the long winter months, but a garden room can make this a real possibility old, rain, frost, snow – usually we leave the garden to hibernate during the winter and stay curled up in our centrally heated houses. But often our winter gardens offer stunning views, and we can get a bit fed up with being indoors all the time. With a garden room from Crown Pavilions you can enjoy garden living all year round. Luke Dejahong, Managing Director of Crown Pavilions, explains, “Outdoor living is an all-year possibility with our garden rooms. We manufacture in the UK using Canadian Western Red Cedar as the main basis of our structures. It is one of the best natural insulating

materials and one of the most durable timbers for the outdoors. It is perfect for the UK climate. And we now offer fully insulated, doubleglazed argon gas-filled windows and doors, and solid oak rustic flooring”. Crown Pavilions manufacture a whole range of garden rooms which can feature sitting rooms with plasma screens, studies with storage and internet connection, screens and fold back doors, mood lighting for evening entertainment, heating, hot tubs, home gyms, and outdoor kitchens or barbecues for when the weather warms up.

Even in the winter you can enhance your use of outside space. One of the very important details is the landscaping. “When we install a garden room we are especially mindful of how it fits into your garden design,” says Luke. “Our sister company, Crown Gardens, will look after every aspect of planting and creating a beautiful setting. We advise and design the planting around the garden room to fit in with the style of your existing garden. You can landscape around the structure to create an integral part of your garden, at every season of the year.” Crown Pavilions have created some wonderful garden rooms for many UK and international clients. They specialize in providing a tailored, bespoke service. All the products are manufactured in the UK. A garden room should be an extension of your home, and you can put it wherever you want. Planning permission is not usually required but you should always contact your local planning officer, or let Crown Pavilions do that for you. They provide a seamless hassle-free product and service from order to completion.

All that is left is for you to turn up the heat, light some candles, decorate with some winter foliage, and you have a warm winter garden retreat for whiling away the long winter afternoons.

COSY HIBERNATE IN STYLE

T

urn up the temperature in your home (without counting the cost in heating bills) by indulging in cosy buys. Gabrielle Fagan sources homeware guaranteed to make you feel stylish and stop you shivering as winter strikes. Winter's arrived, bringing with it dull, dark days and cold winds - and sending us all into hibernation mode. But to do that we need to ensure our homes are nurturing sanctuaries where we can snuggle up and shelter from the elements. Adding warmth to your nest isn't just a case of cranking up the central heating. A few clever tweaks and well-chosen accessories will transform your rooms into toasty winter havens. First, banish any lingering summer touches such as pale, floaty fabrics and lightweight throws. Just as we dress ourselves appropriately to ward off the chills when the season changes, so we should dress up our living spaces. Choose a decor theme, rather than randomly adding furniture and accessories which catch your eye. ree of the current most popular looks which are ideal for conjuring a snug sanctuary are 'Urban Country', 'Modern Luxury' and 'Easy Elegance'. Now's the time to gather the homeware harvest. We've sourced a selection of 'nesting' essentials, from luxury items to those with more purse-friendly price tags, so you can look forward to snuggling up at home. URBAN COUNTRY Pared-back comfort epitomises this look, which works well with exposed brick or panelled walls and chunky wood furniture. e emphasis is on craftsmanship, authenticity and simplicity, but it's essential to bring warmth, texture and interest with natural tweeds, plaids and wool knits. If you favour a rural feel, the essential 'country' touch is a decorative stag or deer head, either hung on a wall or - if that's a step too far - featured in an accessory. Snuggle in style: Check and plaid patterns have been embraced by stores such as John Lewis, which has a Penn armchair, £899, in a homely blue or raspberry wool check. Heal's Discovers Bisley sofa, by Plant & Moss, from £3,495, would be perfect for evenings spent indoors in front of a blazing fire. Plum and purple shades are still popular and Laura Ashley's Lynden sofa, from £1,150, can be upholstered in a choice of 60

fabrics including a soft damson and Highland grape. Cosy touches: New cushions instantly give a lift to a room and Dunelm Mill's selection is superb, with price tags which belie their quality. A Woven Stag cushion, £14.99, a Westie dog cushion, £12.99 and a Tweed Woven cushion, £12.99. Add comfort with a woollen throw. A Vicuna Caramel throw, £44.95, from Velvet Brown, or a Vintage Knitted throw, £30, in a selection of suitably autumn shades including cranberry, Bhs. Soft candlelight is essential for a romantic rustic atmosphere and Laura Ashley has beautiful Rose detail Hurricane lamps, from £12.60 online, and a metal and glass oversized lantern, £55. MODERN LUXURY Monochrome schemes are a classic style statement and, complemented by carefully chosen quality pieces and luxury finishes, this look will be oh-so-cool rather than chilly. ink calm, rather than clutter, and incorporate subtle tones of grey and cream to the key black and white palette, and blend contemporary and classic decor touches, so the effect is cocooning rather than intimidating. Snuggle in style: For kick-off-your-shoes comfort it's hard to beat a Luxury Sheepskin beanbag, £950, and a Luxury Sheepskin rug, £500, e White Company. If that's too pricey, warm those toes on an ivory Sheepskin rug, £34.99, from Dunelm Mill. Cosy touches: e White Company's selection of throws includes a Princeton check throw, £100, in a subtle alabaster grey shade.

THE WHITE COMPANY

Fur throws are in a comfort league all of their own. A Faux-Fur leopard print throw, £149, Oka Direct, is beautiful. Alternatively, a Faux Fur Fox throw, currently £71.20 online at Marks & Spencer, is a snip. Give yourself an after-bath treat with blissfully soft towels. John Lewis's Supima towels start from £4, while Dunelm Mill's So Soft towels start from £3.99 for a hand towel. EASY ELEGANCE Soft, unobtrusive colours - shades of gold, biscuit, honey and cream - calm the senses and are perfect for a relaxing space with a touch of soul. Curved, generously-sized sofas, mirrored furniture and sensual textures are vital ingredients for a look which is grown-up, glamorous and seductively comfortable. Snuggle in style: Laura Ashley's Astoria large curved sofa, from £3,500, combines comfort and style. Echo its decadence with pieces from its range of mirrored furniture such as a Capri coffee table, £450. Warm gold or deep yellow walls are an effective antidote to dark skies outdoors, and the effect can be achieved with paint or wallpaper. A Chinese peony 212135 paper, £52 per metre, from Sanderson, would be striking for a feature wall. Cosy touches: Lamps are the equivalent of jewellery for rooms and if they're gilded they'll add glamour and warmth. A Lilliana table lamp, £80, with a golden leaf base, or a stunning 24 -carat -gold-plated Kartell Bourgie table lamp, £350, both John Lewis. ree round side tables with metallic tops, Content by Conran Accents, £250 a set from John Lewis, are not only useful but decorative, as are the Maple Leaf candle lanterns, from £6 to £25 each n

AUDI LEADS THE WAY IN CAR SECURITY A

udi has won no less than six highly coveted prizes in the 2012 British Insurance Vehicle Security Awards (BIVSA) presented by the atcham Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre. is means that Essex Audi customers can now buy their favourite cars safe in the knowledge that they are the most secure models on the market today. And along with the peace of mind that this latest spate of awards engenders, Audi owners are also likely to benefit from lower annual car insurance premiums as insurers reassess risk. Judges used the New Vehicle Security Assessment (NVSA) process to assign NVSR star ratings to vehicles based on ‘theft of ’ and ‘theft from’ protection. e new Q3 compact SUV has undergone the process for the first time this year, and has come through with flying colours, achieving the top rating in the compact SUV category. e four other winners were already members of the atcham

hall of fame and have remained at the top of their game – they include the A1 premium subcompact, the A4 compact executive, the A5 Cabriolet, the Q5 mid-size SUV and the A8 L W12 high performance luxury saloon. Since the awards began in 2006, the Vorsprung durch Technik brand has secured no less than 26 BIVSA category wins, bearing testament to its absolute commitment to security. Essex Audi Group Operations Director Garry Dench commented: “It’s great to see so many of our models achieving top scores in this really important but often ignored area of car ownership. Anyone who has suffered from car crime will know just how distressing, time-consuming and expensive it can be and will therefore appreciate the significance of these awards.” More information on Audi security or any aspect of Audi cars, including test drives by appointment, are available from all Essex Audi centres. www.Essex-Audi.co.uk n
