From our various locations such as Buckhurst Hill, Loughton, Epping Forest, Wanstead, South Woodford and Chigwell, most of us, are just a handful of Central Line underground stops, to a new and exciting shopper’s paradise. Looking out for each other, caring about our local communities and working in teams to support our neighbourhoods is a win-win situation. Most people care about their local area and inhabitants, and often have great ideas to help either vulnerable people, or for services which may support the community or individuals. e problem is organising a group, having the confidence to develop a core team and the development of each member’s responsibility. In some cases, how to also approach correct institutions in order to receive funding. To help our local neighbourhoods, many UK councils are currently organising support groups for their areas with volunteers willing to offer their time and energy. In the Epping Forest area ‘CREATE … a better neighbourhood’ has been set up by Epping District Council to help groups of volunteers with the support training needed to make groups and teams successful. ey will look at projects, give advice and may even offer funding. is year, the Woodford Festival which runs from 8th until 16th October 2011, starts with an amazing 25 events on the Opening Day and will have a total of 119 events in over 40 different venues in and around Woodford. It has come a long way from its humble beginnings four years ago when Councillor Richard Hoskins came up with the idea of a Community Festival in Woodford and asked Ron and Anny Wortley-Millek to help in coordinating a festival that would showcase the enormous amount of local talent available. Word spread and an amazing amount of interested people turned up at the Redbridge Drama Centre, a staunch supporter from the beginning, for the inaugural meeting – we take a closer look at this wonderful local festival.

FAMILY HISTORY TALK A talk by Sarah Wise entitled "e Italian Boy": Murder and grave robbery in 1830s London. Halloween is just the time to hear tales of the dark and nasty side of London life, in the era of the bodysnatchers. Sarah Wise’s debut book, e Italian Boy: Murder and Grave Robbery in 1830s London, was shortlisted for the 2005 Samuel Johnson Prize for Non-Fiction and won the Crime Writers’ Association Gold Dagger for Non-Fiction. In this illustrated talk, she takes us on a tour of some of East London’s lesser-known graveyards, and surveys some of the highly unsentimental folk who profited from other people’s deaths and family bereavements. A
website also has a special section for children, interested to learn more about space: Astrokyd (for ages 6-14).
Films such as Star Wars, or Hollywood’s vision of aliens: either a friendly ET or more sinister and deadly creations, have inspired us all. Potential life millions of light years away and an endless fascination with planets; the history of the universe, and trying to understand what exactly happened, millions of years ago! We wonder if an asteroid hit the earth causing the dinosaur’s extinction – and could the same happen again? More recently, whether the NASA space junk would be seen over Epping Forest (expected 23rd September) and would this bus-sized satellite hit our terra firma? News in the press – we might see it fly overhead – a low risk of it landing in Epping! If so, not to touch it – not to take any remnants – alerts that the debris would be very hot. Again, we’re looking up at the sky… and wondering.
If you would like to attend one of the society’s meetings, these are held every ursday evening (from 8 p.m. – 10 p.m.) in the Scout Hall, (off Loughton Lane), eydon Bois. e hut is situated next to the cricket club. Directions to the venue are on the map page of the website and these meetings are open to the public. Whether an amateur or an experienced astronomer, all levels of expertise are welcome and even guest speakers are present to give talks and lectures. For Astrokyds – meetings are held on the second Friday of the month from 6.30 p.m. – 8 p.m. at St. Mary’s Hall, Coppice Row.
For those of us who like to do more than just gaze but to understand more, check out the research and regular bulletins posted by the Loughton Astronomical Society. ere are weekly events and the well-written and informative website is packed with useful information, opinions on current space and solar activity, and also links to especially selected websites in the Astro News section. ese include: NASA, New Scientist – Space, News Now – Space, News World (from the Institute of Physics). However even if just embarking on a new interest, do not be perturbed, there is something for everybody and at all levels. e

Loughton Astronomical Society also own both large and small telescopes including two Solar Scopes. However these are for members use only. If you already own a telescope and would like to share your images and photographs with other star gazers, it is worth meeting other members of the society to show your prized pictures, (the website’s gallery has an incredibly interesting selection of photographs), to discuss and exchange ideas, and to also develop areas of mutual interest with fellow enthusiasts. So whether you would like to look up and wonder, or look up, understand, appreciate and develop an interest as part of an organised group, wrap up warm and go to eydon on a ursday… For more information on Loughton Astronomical Society – visit the website: www.las-astro.org.uk

training needed to make groups and teams successful. ey will look at projects, give advice and may even offer funding. As a result of local interest, a recent free workshop was held in Waltham Abbey. e programme included information on: • Becoming a trustee of a group. • Chairing a meeting. is talk included effective tips. • Secretary. e important role of the secretary is to take minutes, follow up on ideas and administration. • Finance. In addition, every team should have a key member to take responsibility for managing the finances. e event helped potential volunteers, to understand this role and their contribution towards the group. Delegate packs were available during the day and the event even included lunch!
Speaking about the event, Epping Forest District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Wellbeing, Councillor Ricki Gadsby explained: “e aim of the `Create… a Better Neighbourhood` event was to encourage people to become actively involved in their community and to give them the confidence to put their ideas into action. e informal, friendly day was an opportunity for anyone interested in forming a new community group to find out how best to move forward, and it provided helpful information and tips on topics such as publicity, key roles, responsibilities and financial management. Participants took away simple, but highly effective, tools and techniques that could be put into place straight away to set up projects and achieve successful outcomes.”
Speaking about the benefits of volunteering within the local community, Councillor Gadsby added:
“VOLUNTEERING IS HUGELY REWARDING. PROFESSIONAL, WELL ORGANISED COMMUNITY GROUPS CAN BRING SIGNIFICANT BENEFITS TO THE COMMUNITY AND ALSO ATTRACT VARIOUS POTS OF FUNDING TO SUPPORT REALLY WORTHWHILE LOCAL INITIATIVES.”
If you would be interested in setting up a group or attending any future events, please contact the Council. For information on future events please contact Community Development Worker, Gemma Jones, on 01992 564556 or email: grjones@eppingforestdc.gov.uk.

iving east of London is certainly feeling like the In Place. Olympic Village, Docklands, close proximity to the Square Mile and City of London, now Westfield Stratford City.
From our various locations such as Buckhurst Hill, Loughton, Epping Forest, Wanstead, South Woodford and Chigwell, most of us, are just a handful of Central line underground stops, to a new and exciting shopper’s paradise. For those who prefer to drive, there is ample parking and the journey is just a quick jaunt from home. An exciting, vibrant selection of shops with large, artistically designed windows, to entice shoppers and spectators as they meander around the precinct in eager pursuit of goodies, luxuries, gifts, clothing, food essentials or simply, some retail therapy. Despite the economy and other doom and gloom forecasts, a potter around an interesting and exciting array of shops can always ensure a certain feel-good-factor. Alternatively, a fabulous VUE cinema for a great day or evening out despite the weather! For all ages and either parents, grandparents or children, absolutely everybody, will find exactly, what they’re looking for. A full range of fashion shops are on offer and excited teenagers were seen all around the mall, carrying Primark and Zara bags. For others who prefer designer brands: Hugo Boss, Tommy Hilfiger, Superdry, Hollister, Gant, Gap to name just a few. If looking for shoes to complement your clothing style: Aldo, Nine West, Russell & Bromley, plus so many more… Also a full selection of shops to accessorise your new style or addition to the wardrobe: Accessorize, Fossil, Sunglass Hut, and Claire’s Accessories. Plus of course, all the delights that John Lewis has to offer too if looking for cosmetics, handbags and top quality clothing. If

accessorising to a more elegant level, a very exciting list of jewellery shops: Tag Heuer, Pandora, and Links of London … Warning: Don’t leave home without your credit card! However, despite all this fabulous choice, and as I observed the spectators and shoppers, I noticed that the vast majority of those in their more mature years, all seemed to be carrying an M&S carrier bag! I was slightly confused about this, or perhaps the new shoppers were still finding their way around the mall… I was intrigued… But not for long… I noticed that Foyles too, would be opening a book store within the not, too distant future. I feel a shopping centre is as good as its book shop and Foyles is perfect! I’m sold and will be back. A great book shop, plenty of coffee shops and this Essex Bohemian has found a sanctuary. From a pampering perspective, an exciting and full selection of health and beauty shops, also hairdressing salons such as, Supercuts and Toni and Guy. So whether shopping, indulging, pampering or just enjoying a meander, there is ample choice. WHETHER SHOPPING, PARTICIPATING IN AN EVENT, ENJOYING A TREATMENT OR GOING TO CINEMA … WESTFIELD STRATFORD IS FABULOUS
Despite its size, there are great maps and even computer screens which will identify your exact location and show the quickest route to your chosen shop or destination. help you through the maze, twists and turns, or even to the al fresco areas if you prefer to sit outside. Whether dining before or afterwards, or as respite to a hard day shopping, the restaurant selection is phenomenal. Looking at the map, the A-Z of Food has the longest list! Whether delicacies in the Great Eastern Market on the lower ground level with a tastefully arranged and styled area for either in-house dining or take-away. L’Orchidee for Parisian style macaroons or Royal Indian Delicacies for Indian sweetmeats. Having looked at them all, I was very pleased to find zatar in the Lebanese alcove. Normally I pick up this spice on my Middle Eastern travels (although now sold in Waitrose). If you have a preference for hummus, a splash of good quality olive oil, chopped parsley and sprinkling of zatar will raise this humble dish into something quite exquisite and addictive. With warmed pitta and perhaps some falafel too, a taste of the exotic Middle East, can tantalise the most discerning of taste buds. But aside, shopping, cinema and the Great Eastern Market, there is also a fantastic selection of restaurants. If going out with fussy children, you could merge an international selection of delicious cuisine around one table - the first floor Café Court offers something for everybody and dependent upon mood or preference at the time. Tortillas, Rosa’s (ai), Chip + Fish, Banger Bros, Chicago Rib Shack, Caffe Concerto plus there are other areas within the mall which offer nourishment and refreshment. So for hours, I wandered – I wanted to buy everything. Inspired with fantastic ideas to brighten up the home; additions to the wardrobe, or just for the fun of it. Where to start? When to stop? … John Lewis fulfilled all expectations, M&S was terrific and I even nearly bought a new speaker system from Bose to liven up my lounge and to add some musical accompaniment to my daily chores. Feeling tired, it was almost 6 p.m. and I needed to return home in order to prepare dinner. My feet were beginning to ache and I was pleased that the station was so close. So as part of my exit strategy, I returned to M&S. Confused by choice and selection, slightly bemused by the many aisles and unfamiliar territory, I found an old faithful and picked up a tub of hummus. By chance, passed the wholemeal pitta whilst walking towards the tills… Slowly, I pottered back to the station and was pleased for a seat on the train. I put my handbag and carrier on my lap and then it suddenly dawned on me: I too had left with just an M&S bag! Umm… If you have any comments on this feature, please write to me at: Michelle@starcopywriting.com. ank you. OCTOBER2011 15

I
intended to begin this piece by saying I hoped you enjoyed the summer, or what there was of it. But as I put pen to paper, yes I still write my articles in longhand, old habits die hard, the outside temperature is hovering around 30 degrees and the sun blazes in a totally clear blue sky. Over the past years having advised my clients that the final prime selling time of each year runs from the 15th September to the beginning of November, I am now recalculating the period in the light of what seems to be
an “Indian Summer”. Out of interest the phrase emanates from the indigenous North American Indians, and has nothing to do with the Indian sub-continent. It will be interesting to see whether the bonus of what could be an extended Summer, will in fact expand the traditional window of time within the local residential property market. For with few exceptions fine
prices at a consistently high level, particularly in the traditionally sought after locations. While interest rates stay at the present level I do not expect things to change and feel that the current volume of sales are unlikely to be increased in the present climate. Lettings are likely to stay strong with many more “accidental landlords” (those that have been unable to achieve the over optimistic values expected) entering the market for the first time.
weather makes a big difference to us all, and in many cases can be the catalyst that encourages us to decide whether we should upgrade or extend our existing accommodation or move on to pastures green.
negotiated several deals between £1 - £2 million, the market in this area has not been easy and it has been increasingly noticeable that buyers have been extremely choosy, particularly if the property requires any form of improvement.
Despite the media’s preaching of “doom and gloom” our agency has in fact experienced greater activity in both the sales and lettings market through September, albeit at what we describe as our “lower end”, which is between £350,000 and one million pounds for sales and £1000 and £4000 per calendar month for lettings, the latter demonstrating a constant and insatiable demand at this level. Although we have
Although financing purchases is continuing to be far from easy, there is a greater feeling that lenders are becoming less discriminate and in many cases willing to relax the constricting criteria they were applying earlier in the year. Making life a little easier for buyers.
In this area we are experiencing a slight increase in rents for quality homes, those that have been kitted out in 5 star fashion, providing of course Landlords are willing to accommodate tenants’ ever increasing demands for a trouble free service. e professional landlord has always been aware of this, and realises that in order to keep a good tenant, at a “full” rent, they must offer value for money and provide attentive quality property management. ose looking to penny pinch and cut corners with a D.I.Y. service, or paying an Agent a pittance to manage their most valuable asset invariably ends up in tears.
roughout this year, it would seem that the shortness of supply of quality property has held

Cold days in autumn and spooky Halloween evenings in Brentwood WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS
T
he weather has certainly turned cold. Coats have been removed from wardrobes to hooks by our front doors. Handy brooms in hallways, to facilitate the endless sweeping away of tawny and golden leaves from nearby trees. Welcome to autumn! ... Hopefully most of our readership would have enjoyed some form of summer respite before the onslaught of a colder climate, rain, sleet and probably some snow too. Winter in England is only beautiful from the comfort of a warm room. Or if suitably attired in snug warm clothing, which keeps out the cold biting wind and rain. At best, the weather could be described as crisp!
So what is there to look forward to? Well imminently, there’s Halloween which can be incredibly good fun. Dressing up, decorating the home or inviting friends or family to enjoy in some Halloween fayre with pumpkin pie, and some creative slants for familiar treats. Perhaps Black Cat Cup Cakes, Deathly Spiced Roasted Pumpkin or Frightening Feta Fajitas with tooth shaped red peppers to add to the fun! With a little imagination and sense- of humour, parties can potentially be even more quirky than usual and in keeping with the spirit of the occasion. However if spirits or ghosts excite your Halloween, I have read there are spooky encounters at the Kelvedon Hatch Secret Nuclear Bunker in Brentwood … Originally built as a secret bunker to protect senior
governmental ministers (including the prime minister) from a nuclear attack, it was originally constructed to house 600 military and civilians who would take responsibility after this frightening aftermath. However, despite its façade as an ordinary looking cottage, once inside, tunnels lead to 100 ft below the earth’s surface. So why is this relevant to Halloween? Because of paranormal reports, sightings, alleged evidence of ghosts, spirits and things that really do go bump in the night! Haunted Happenings have organised a Ghost Hunt on 23rd October 2011 which is unfortunately already sold out. However, due to the popularity of this event, they are repeating the ghost hunt on 17th December again, at Kelvedon Hatch, Brentwood. So if you are not scared and enjoy, the sound of unexplained footsteps, creaks, shadows in the dark, paranormal activity and things which cannot be explained… book early to avoid disappointment. Alternatively and also in Brentwood – there is the Mayor's Halloween Disco on 28 October 2011. If you enjoy dressing up and like to boogie – the disco promises to be a great deal of fun for those who prefer to dance the night away rather than quivering in cold, dark shadows. Personally, when it comes to ghosts, spirits or even Harry Potter and scary stuff in Hogwarts, I prefer a logical

explanation and no surprises. So you won’t find me in an eerie tunnel with a shaky hand holding a camera for evidence. I prefer the parties and shortly after Halloween, am eagerly preparing for a firework infused, Guy Fawkes Night (one week later on November 5th). I opt for fun and festivities to maintain the momentum of social gatherings and light-hearted revelry. his year, the Woodford Festival which runs from 8th until 16th October 2011, starts with an amazing 25 events on the Opening Day and will have a total of 119 events in over 40 different venues in and around Woodford. It has come a long way from its humble beginnings four years ago when Councillor Richard Hoskins came up with the idea of a Community Festival in Woodford and asked Ron and Anny Wortley-Millek to help in coordinating a festival that would showcase the enormous amount of local talent available. Word spread and an amazing amount of interested people turned up at the Redbridge Drama Centre, a staunch supporter from the beginning, for the inaugural meeting. Local artists, clubs, groups, associations, churches and other places of worship and schools were all eager to participate. Since then the Festival has gone from strength to strength thanks to the continuing interest of local people and a great band of volunteers who all
help to make this festival possible. anks must also go to our appreciative audiences who attend the events and make it all worthwhile. Over the 9 day Festival, people can expect to find a lot of variety to suit all tastes. ere will be art-drama music -dance-theatre-poetry and more to choose from. Also on offer will be: walks, talks, an arts trail, cultural events, theatre productions, art and craft exhibitions, beer festivals, food tastings, sporting events and much, much more. Local schools will once again take part with a variety of events.
IT IS AMAZING THE AMOUNT OF TALENT WHICH IS PRESENT IN WOODFORD AND ENVIRONS: YOU DO NOT NEED TO SEEK OUT THE BRIGHT LIGHTS OF LONDON FOR SOME GOOD ENTERTAINMENT OR CLASSY ART: IT’S ALL AVAILABLE LOCALLY!
Helmet - open day at Woodford Fire Station
Mawkin - one of the bands who played at the folk event in the Redbridge Drama Centre Walkers meet up
Amongst the new entries this year are: a Cider Pressing demonstration by a small group of people who encouraged their neighbours to donate apples from their garden in return for some bottled cider, a Caribbean Harvest Sunday serving up mouth watering exotic food, a Magic Night with close up tricks by members of the Magic Circle, a Concert version of the opera Aida by Vision Voices proving that opera is not boring but can be a moving and exciting experience for everyone concerned and an Interactive Movie Making event involving everything from script to screen. Woodfordians and visitors will be totally spoilt for choice and will certainly find something to their liking. Once again, the Festival’s organisers are amazed by the community spirit in Woodford: so many individuals, clubs, organisations and associations are eager to participate and give their time and talents freely for this important community event. Also, local businesses are sponsoring the printed programme and the website.
30,000 programme leaflets have been printed; circa 24,000 of these will be delivered to local residents. It is heart warming to see that in these times of cutbacks and austerity, funding could still be found and this year the Woodford Festival Association is very grateful to its major sponsors: the London Borough of Redbridge Area 2 Committee; the Redbridge Strategic Partnership; the Redbridge Arts Council and Waitrose for their generous grants which will go a long way to cover the costs of this ever growing, popular community Festival which has truly become a remarkable showcase of local talent and attracts more visitors every year. Printed colour programmes are now available from Woodford and South Woodford libraries, churches, pubs and participating venues. Many of the festival events will be free or low cost, making it accessible to everyone. See website: www.woodfordfestival.org.uk for information on the programme and venues.

our years ago, just days after her tenth birthday, Buckhurst Hill teenager, Grace Boxall, was diagnosed with a high grade malignant brain tumour. Within days Grace underwent emergency nine hour surgery at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH). is partially removed the tumour. Over the months that followed Grace had to attend 33 sessions of Radio erapy coupled with Chemotherapy. Both her hair and her voice were lost and many blood and platelet transfusions were endured. Devastatingly in the spring of 2008 a MRI scan revealed that the tumour was re-growing. It was feared that it may be incurable and palliative care was offered. Neither was accepted and Dominic ompson, Grace’s Neurosurgeon, was approached to operate once again. He agreed to this. On 12th May 2008 Grace went under the knife for a second time. Ten hours later Dominic emerged and declared himself as ‘chuffed’ as the operation was a success; the tumour removed. Frequent MRI scans continue to report that Grace is disease free and in remission. Remarkably healthy considering what she has been through Grace

is determined to help those less fortunate. For the past two years GRACE HAS TAKEN PART IN CANCER RESEARCH’S RACE FOR LIFE, RAISING IN EXCESS OF £5,000. THIS WAS NOT ENOUGH FOR GRACE THOUGH, AND THIS SUMMER THE PUPIL AT CHIGWELL SCHOOL FORMED HER OWN CHARITY; ‘SMILES WITH GRACE’ (REG NO. 1142330). e aim of the charity is to help with research, education and the support of all sick young people, particularly with regard to cancer. A coffee morning held by Grace’s Nanny in the Isle of Wight got the charity off and running, raising £215. en on Saturday 3rd September the first main event took place; a poignant 18km walk from her home in Buckhurst Hill to Great Ormond Street. e journey Grace completed four years ago when the tumour was first detected and one that has been repeated many times since. e sun shone and an exceptional 80 people walked and over £11,000 has been raised.
is year’s beneficiaries will be Grace’s Neurosurgeon’s research fund for the ongoing development of brain surgery; Parrot Ward at GOSH, where Grace underwent her two operations and Dream Factory, a local charity that answers the dream of sick, often terminally ill, children (they arranged for Grace to meet with the author Jacqueline Wilson when she was sick). With its success so evident the 18km walk is destined to become an annual event,
with everyone welcome. In addition, in 2012 Grace is planning to produce a non-medical media pack for families who are unfortunate enough to experience what Grace and her family have had to endure. Aquascutum’s rich British heritage continues through the use of innovative technical fabrics, featuring an exclusively commissioned, laminated,British tweed and a playful exploration of coating silk georgette with a waterproof gloss finish. he vibrant and internationally renowned London Fashion Week is always exciting and inspirational, and last month's event proved to be just that.
e magic of London Fashion Week is not merely thanks to the fashion designers' and fashion stylists' cutting-edge collections but the media excitement that accompanies them. e allure of the show is exceptional and London Fashion Week continues to be the top fashion event pulling visitors from every corner of the globe. It's a week where designers are free to create at will and experiment with new trends for clothing. e world watches as fashion history is made. While we are all thinking about our autumn wardrobes and digging out our winter jumpers in an attempt to stay warm, designers were showcasing next year’s spring/summer collections during this month’s London Fashion Week. So what we will be wearing next Spring & Summer? Here are just a selection of those names that hit the catwalk! BURBERRY PRORSUM Over 1500 guests attended the Burberry Prorsum Spring Summer 2012 Womenswear show in London’s Hyde Park. Pippa Middleton, Kanye West, Samantha Cameron, Sienna Miller, Paul Weller were among the well-groomed crowd of celebrities packing London Fashion Week's glossiest event to catch a glimpse of Burberry's spring/summer 2012 collection. Burberry Prorsum's design chief Christopher Bailey wowed the star-studded crowd with dozens of variations on the luxury brand's signature trench coat.Bailey, who has been at the helm of the historic British brand's designs for a decade, has been credited with revitalising it and lifting its revenues. For the spring and summer 2012 season, he showed off a commercially-savvy collection that ensured the clothes suited all tastes. Neutrals were ditched for rich autumnal hues which dominated alongside colourful abstract prints - and raffia was prominently used on tops, coats, belts and bags.Bailey said he wanted to celebrate traditional craftsmanship that is being forgotten and to juxtapose that with the digital technology that the brand is embracing. 36

Chic shoes combine attitude with supreme comfort and we introduce a unique new style, both slipper and loafer - welcome to the Aquascutum ‘Sloafer’. Contemporary classics for the modern woman. Aquascutum was founded in 1851 by high quality tailor John Emary with the mission to provide stylish protection from the unpredictable British weather. e name Aquascutum originates from the two Latin words ‘aqua’ (water) and ‘scutum’ (shield). Aquascutum has been part of London city life for nearly 160 years. JASPER CONRAN As always the front row of Jasper’s catwalk show was packed with members of the fashion press and his family and friends who turned out in force for a look at what Jasper has in store for next season. Laced-trimmed georgette dresses add a touch of femininity, casually wrapping around the waist to create a sensual silhouette. Pretty, soft-washed powder tones of blush, lavender and mauve sit next to a more masculine range of chambray blues and steely greys whilst vibrant shots of bright buttercup, jade and bordeaux bring optimistic block colour highlights to the palette. Hazy florals add depth, their petals inked with dark tones. JAEGER For Spring/Summer 2012, Jaeger London is inspired by the glamour of the late 60s /early 70s jet set and their hideaways in far-flung, exotic destinations. is season sees the Jaeger London woman landing on the isle of Mustique, the exclusive playground of British rock stars and royalty. Imagine the back of a villa open onto the ocean, the billowing curtains blowing gently in the sea breeze. Her wardrobe epitomises the laid-back elegance of the island, blended with British colonial references, rich colours and textures and inspired by Jaeger’s iconic early 1970s advertising campaigns shot against backdrops of famous locations. John’s palette is, as ever, simply beautiful - essentially monochrome - black in all its depths, honey and soft gold, rose and broken white. Tints and hues are realised in fluid silk georgette, crepes and linen, crisp in silk organza, cottons, and extraordinary surfaces. e modern silhouette is sculpted in structured volume, surfaces densely worked in patchwork crochets, leathers and hand tucked raffia, or slender draping the body in softly pleated asymmetry, easy tailoring and elongated skirts and trousers John’s Spring Summer 2012 collection is informed by his enduring love of structure, texture and form, and his particular view of strength and tenderness. freestanding freestanding stores, including the Jaeger London branded stores in prime London locations, and significant shop-in-shop presence in Harrods, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, Fenwick, House of Fraser and John Lewis. HOUSE OF HOLLAND e trend for 70s fashion continued at House of Holland where their spring/summer 2012 collection had a pastel punk edge. Inspirations were Skins and Punks, SKA revival and South Beach & Miami palette. Highlights included Oversized mobre leopard, lurex string knits, laser-cut fishnet leather, hand painted python belts and cuffs and Reworked House of Holland signature tartan. House of Holland’s collection is nothing shy of colour with mint, lilac, apricot and French Navy being featured – the clothes were fun and, as always, Henry isn’t taking fashion too seriously. JOHN ROCHA Drawing inspiration from notions as diverse as mythical warriors, fishing on the Amazon, his ongoing fascination with the black lit paintings of Pierre Soulages, and the languid tones of Hank Williams. e Spring/Summer 2012 collection continues John Rocha’s exploration of textures and structures and the stories they can tell. Blurring the senses between fragile and bold, wild and gentle, there is a certain duality in the collection, John creates an atmosphere of tough romanticism, his women appearing at once fierce and serene.

Cool Earth has a plan to save the Rainforest. If we don’t save the Rainforest- Forget it! First we saved the Rainforest. Will they ever know we saved the planet? Most of you know that I’ve always used my fashion shows as a platform for my belief in the importance of social justice and the urgent need to fight climate change. I introduce the Rainforest charity, Cool Earth, and a campaign that is very close to my heart- a plan to save the most vulnerable Rainforest areas by 2020. We must begin today- tomorrow is too late. Governments have been talking about saving the Rainforest for 40 years. Now, only half of it is left. Since launching in 2007, Cool Earth has worked with indigenous Rainforest people to protect 2.5 million acres in the Western Amazon and block the advance of illegal logging- the first stage in most Rainforest destruction. We plan to extend this effective community-lead model along the most critical arcs of deforestation in the Amazon, the Congo Basin and Borneo- the groundwork has already been laid. We need your help to continue. I am personally supporting Cool Earth and investing in our future. is show marked the start of our fundraising campaign for Cool Earth- we will have the official launch in November. I’m inviting my friends, celebrities and everyone interested in saving our beautiful world to join me. ink about getting involved. Find out more about playing your part at www.coolearth.org. Remember: No Rainforest, No Planet. We have less than 10 years to keep what is left!

DAVID KOMA
DAVID KOMA Inspired by tribal body paint and the work of contemporary artist Kim Joon, David Koma’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection focuses on the body as a canvas. Kim Joon decorates intertwining bodies with fluid painting; David re-interprets this concept by using devore to act as a delicate second skin that conceals yet reveals the female form. Imitating the masterful artistry of Polynesian tribal tattoos, combinations of devore prints from small and intricate to large, abstract blocks reference the ‘Pe’a’, the traditional male tattoo covering the body from the waist to the knees. e bold ‘Pe’a’ symbolizes men respected for courage; David similarly designs for a strong and powerful female muse. e African zulu skirt and Dinka men’s corset are interpreted as handcrafted leather belts with fringing and pleats, that enclose a tailored and body conscious silhouette in light wools and silks. Combining the traditional Scottish kilt with tribal layering creates feminine, high waisted skirts with pleated panel effects. is season sees a continuation of David Koma’s third collaboration with Alain Quilici who has designed exclusive footwear for the collection. MARIA GRACHVOGEL e Maria Grachvogel Spring/Summer 2012 collection is a feast of colour, print and texture. e palette is vibrant and fresh with bold shots of raspberry, apple and pristine white that sit alongside languid tones of blossom, clay and ash. Signature Maria Grachvogel pieces such as the beautifully cut magic trousers are given an innovative twist this season with the introduction of a skinny leg pant with a cool ankle drape and a wrap palazzo with a wide, fluid leg. Maria’s iconic catsuit appears in fresh white crepe, blossom and snake print wool. is season sees the launch of Atalanta Weller for Maria Grachvogel; an exclusive footwear line and design collaboration featuring a statement, cut-away shoe boot in snakeskin, ash and blossom suede, and a sculpted spiked court. Maria Grachvogel also celebrates the opening of her new London flagship store at 18 Culford Gardens, SW3. e store has been designed by Russell Sage, the designer behind the interiors at the Savoy Grill, the restaurant at Claridges, the Zetter Townhouse and Stapleford Park. Maria on the store: ‘is is such a wonderful and unique space that is absolutely perfect for us. I fell in love with it instantly after a long search for the right ‘home’. My vision was to create an intimate space that would not only inspire me creatively but would provide a retreat for everyone who comes to visit us"

MENSWEAR DAY - SPRING/SUMMER 2012 It isn't so different from the women's shows – there's the clothes, the models, the celebrities – but it is more relaxed. London Fashion Week was brought to a stylish close as the men took to the catwalk for spring/summer 2012. e main attractions covered Mexican influences, dapper suits, and exotic and paisley prints. is season, the Topman boy would not look out of place leaving a smoking Parisian jazz club during the early hours of the early 1950s. Time travel decadence aside, there were silk paisley shirts, tweed suits, lurex fisherman jumpers and fake fur. It went down a treat. Topman delivered a fine show and the very heart of menswear day. SPG, that's Sir Philip Green, not Sarah Jessica Parker - the billionaire was THE VIP at the Topman show. Christopher Shannon showed us that tassels could bring a whole new lease of life to the humble shirt, while James Small drew quite s celebrity crowd including Kate Moss and Jamie Hince - to see his floral shirts and shorts and Oliver Spencer made coral the colour of the season. "Menswear fashion in London is alive and kicking and I'm always proud to wear British designers," said actor Luke Evans, also seen at Pringle of Scotland earlier in the week, too. "Very interesting to see Alistair Carr's new vision. His designs are strong and fresh. is has been my first London Fashion Week and it was great to have the opportunity to see two very British designers and their work," he told us. Fashion Week is one of the highest profile fashion events in the world and one of the ‘big four’ international catwalk influencers. e event is organised by the British Fashion Council (BFC) and funded by a number of sponsors (including Canon Europe current headline sponsor for seven consecutive seasons). London Fashion Week puts London and British Fashion firmly on the global stage, generating orders in the region of £100m; the event itself contributes £20 million to the London economy in terms of direct spend and attracts visitors from over 25 countries including US, France, Italy, Russia, Middle East, China and UAE.

Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR DENTAL IMPLANTS In this issue, I would like to discuss about dental implants. Implants offer one of the best ways of replacing missing teeth for improved appearance and function. How long have implants been around? Since the 1950s, but only in the last 20 years or so has implant treatment become more popular. Modern implants are scientifically proven to be safe, long lasting and strong. e treatment has a success rate of over 95% over 15 years! What are they? A wonderful way to replace one or more missing teeth. An implant is a titanium rod or screw that is fixed into the jawbone. is acts as the foundation (just like the root of a natural tooth) for a crown to be fixed onto. e treatment results in natural looking teeth that have a very good long-term success rate, often far better than fillings and dentures. Implants allow you to eat better and enjoy the foods you like. ey really help to improve your lifestyle and self-confidence if you have unsightly gaps or dentures.
Will I need time off ? Not necessarily. Depending on how many implants are placed, you may be able to go back to work in a day or two. Will I be without teeth? No, we carefully adjust your denture to go over the implants. Sometimes we make a transitional bridge to replace a missing tooth. What are the stages of implant treatment? Implants can be placed painlessly under local anaesthetic. Dissolvable stitches are used after the surgical placement of implants. After 2-4 months, the implants become well and truly integrated into the bone. e next stage is to create a custom fitting post or anchor that is securely screwed into the implant. Finally, a crown can be placed above this to replace the missing tooth, or teeth. Does treatment hurt? No, the treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic. Special painkillers and antibiotics after the treatment ensure that the healing is comfortable. Most patients feel fine afterwards and in fact say that the treatment was much better than they thought it would be. ere can sometimes be some swelling and pain afterwards. Am I put to sleep? No, this is not necessary. Treatment is often straightforward and is done under local anaesthetic. Sometimes we use a special drug to relax you. is technique is called intra-venous sedation. One of the fantastic benefits of this technique is that you don’t even remember anything the next day!
Bone loss is irreversible and lifelong. After a tooth is lost, bone continues to shrink away. is is made worse by the pressure from a removable denture, which continually presses on the gums. By placing implants, the bone loss stops and it is possible to literally have your own teeth back. How much does it cost? is depends on each particular case. e dentist has to assess how much bone is available. e dentist also carefully assesses your general medical history and the state of your dental condition. It is then important to plan which implant system and implant shapes best suit your mouth. e fees include the surgical placement, connection of the post(s) and the fabrication of the crown or bridge that goes over the post(s). It is important to check if the dentist offers interest free finance options (e.g. 0% interest over 2 years) to make the treatment affordable. Sometimes, it is necessary to carry out a bone graft or add some bone around the implant – there is an additional fee for this. How do I choose the Practice for my implant dentistry? ere are many factors to consider: • e skill and experience of
the implantologist • A practice that has the latest equipment e.g. a CT Scanner (to assess the bone volume in 3D for the safe and accurate placement of implants) • e implant system used (there are many implant systems available – is the dentist using a system that is scientifically proven, rather than one that simply costs less?) • Is treatment done under sterile conditions (i.e. procedures like in an operating theatre in a hospital). is will greatly reduce the risk of infection and improve the success rates • e professionalism and care of the entire dental Team • Flexible finance options – to allow you to pay for the treatment in small installments over a longer period of time For more information on implant dentistry, visit www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk/impl ants-cosmetic-dentures/what-are-i mplants or phone 020 85000544 to arrange a complimentary initial consultation with myself.

elcome back to another month and more about walking as well as the chance to thank everyone who has been in touch about their favourite walks, many of which were walks on the coast in Essex, Suffolk, Kent and Sussex. anks also to John and Amanda who contacted me about a great walk they did on the Fife Coast path, now that one’s been on my list for a while so you’ve now inspired me to research it further and perhaps add it to the list for 2012. If any of you dear readers are interested, then check it out at http://www.fifecoastalpath.co.uk/ Talking of 2012’s list, my plan, of course is to walk more of the Camino and we might actually make it to the Spanish border this year but Hadrian’s Wall is also on my radar. I just came along some rather nice guided walks on it last week, well we’ll see who wins out. Last month, I wrote - “At this time of the year we can experience a range of different temperatures so layers allow us to take off and put on as we need and always keep us comfortable.” And as I write this it’s actually too hot to walk unless you live in hot climates and are used to it. Who would have thought it would be this hot as we entered October. It meant that those on the the Glowalk in aid of Haven House Hospice www.havenhouse.org.uk/glowalk/ in Woodford, had a great evening walk doing 10kms or 6 miles in and around their local area and raising well needed money. I was driving my daughter to a youth club on the evening of the walk and we made sure we tooted the horn in support. I had, in fact, thought seriously about signing up and pulling in the Athena Angels but as many of us members were still raising money for our walk in aid of Maggie’s centres http://www.maggiescentres.org on September 16th, it had to be missed - there’s a limit to how often you can ask your friends and family to support you. However, it looked great fun so perhaps you’ll be inspired by my words and find yourselves walking with me in 2013. Maggie’s Night Hike was an amazing experience and having trained the team since March, we’d gotten to know each other pretty well and shared the aches, pains and the blisters. In fact all 12 of those wonderful women are now much wiser about how to prevent certain debilitating conditions and many are wanting to continue with their new found hobby. As I mentioned the money is still coming in and in next month’s article I’ll hopefully be able to let you know how much we raised. Walking 10 or 20 miles around London through the night was really fun and as Maggies do the walk in co-operation with Open House, we were able to access buildings like the Royal Geographical Society, RIBA and City Hall from where the views were stunning. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and there will be many events happening, some I’m sure involving walking. It may interest you to know that according to a Japanese study of over 30,000 women, women who walk for an hour a day can more than 42

half the risk of developing breast cancer. It’s a statistic worth thinking about and it’s an exercise that’s so easy to build into your everyday life. In fact walking is the most natural form of exercise; is part of most people’s everyday life and often described by health experts as “almost perfect exercise”. It offers an amazing number of benefits, find some of them listed below:• Helps to improve your health and fitness, therefore reducing the risk of ill health later in life. • Improves self esteem • Relieves symptoms of depression • Reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke • Lowers blood pressure • Reduces high cholesterol and improve blood lipid profile • Reduces body fat • Enhances mental well being • Increases bone density, hence helping to prevent osteoporosis • Reduces the risk of colon and breast cancer. • Reduces the risk of non-insulin dependent diabetes • Helps to control body weight • Helps osteoarthritis • Helps flexibility and co-ordination hence reducing the risk of falls • Alters fat metabolism so fat is burnt up instead of sugars, helping to reduce weight • Increases energy • Improves your circulation giving you a fresher, healthier look • Helps build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints • Reduces stress • Boosts your immune system

It can also: • Help clear your head • Stimulate creativity • Help the environment • Introduce you to new places • Be part of your social life • Work as a team builder • Increase or give you confidence • Help you feel more in control. • Be started slowly and built up gently. As 70% of adults don’t take enough exercise to benefit their health, walking would seem to be the place to start and as a low- impact, aerobic exercise it’s suitable for just about everyone regardless of age or size.
OVERLOOKING THE CANAL IN REGENT'S PARK
Just think about how flexible it is. You can do it where you want, when you want and for as long as you want and it goes with you everywhere. Apart from a pair of flat comfortable shoes which are a necessity, you have your kit with you when traveling on business or on holidays, so no excuses. How good is that for your stress relief and wellbeing? Exercise should be about enjoyment so make sure your walking is. In our area we have many pleasant places to walk such as canal towpaths, parks and river sides. Look around as you walk and get to know your own area. If you don’t like walking alone, take your dog for a walk or borrow someone else’s. Better still find a buddy to walk with and as make it a social occasion too. More and more people are joining walkers groups such as the Ramblers and also looking at planning walking holidays and challenges such as those mentioned.
THE 20 MILE TEAM AT THE END OF THE NIGHT HIKE
When I started walking regularly, I quickly experienced benefits I did not expect. My walks gave me ’me time’, allowed me to plan my day and work through issues. I was more creative and I always returned in a better mood with a clear head and a real positive attitude. I toned up, lost weight and my back problems disappeared - all the things I did it for but I also sleep better, am calmer and want to eat more healthily. Very quickly others noticed too and I had compliments about my glowing skin, my increased energy and my streamlined body. Walking helps you feel more of a member of your community as you are physically out and about in it more. You can walk to shops and get to know people, you are supporting your local economy and not adding to the traffic problems. Since I have started walking I have seen the number of times that I‘ve been ill reduce dramatically. I can’t remember the last time I had a really bad cold. I know it’s my walking and there’s no way I intend to stop. Now is a good time to start to build that immunity for the winter weather ahead.

DENTAL TREATMENT THAT MADE MY SMILE Words by Christine baker
I
t was a very big decision and one I had been thinking about for some years but always shied away from. Was it because of the pain and discomfort, or was it the cost? Probably a combination of the two. But earlier this year after meeting Ash Parmar of “Smile Design By Ash”, I decided to take the plunge and looked into getting some functionality in my mouth with dental implants to replace the missing teeth on my upper jaw. I have been without any back teeth at the top for years, so can only eat on one side of my mouth – even that’s hard work as I have just one molar in the bottom set of teeth. It’s been a dodgy situation for years and each time I asked my National Health dentist about it, he would always say the same “you need to hang on to that tooth Mrs Baker.” Now that’s fine if it’s rock solid, but sometime ago this vital tooth started to wobble. My stomach felt sick as I thought of what would happen next and that if I didn’t take action, I would be sucking my food through a straw by the time I was in my seventies! en I met Ash. e timing was right and immediately once I met him at the new practice in Chigwell, I knew I was in good hands. Ash is the best in the business and offers an amazing range of treatments. e practice is definitely state of the art with equipment of the highest specification. e staff are professional, warm and friendly and do everything to put patients at ease. It would be true to say that visiting the dentist is daunting and we have all heard of nightmare stories. Well my experience has been completely the reverse throughout the whole journey, which continues as I write. Also, when Ash says the treatment is painless, it is. On every occasion after my visit, I may have suffered slight discomfort, but definitely no pain. THE PROCESS BEGINS…… Ash carried out a very comprehensive dental assessment – unlike I had ever had before. Photographs, impressions for models, gum measurements and detailed analysis of my smile were done. Ash then explained to me in very clear and easy to understand terms all my options, which included a removable denture or a bone graft followed by implants. As I was keen on improving my smile, he also explained the modern cosmetic options available. When I saw the

photographs of my teeth and smile before any dental treatment, I was amazed to see the shape and colour of them – I had never really imagined how they had changed over the years! After digesting my professional and personalized typed report with all my treatment options and estimates, another big question I had was “did I have the necessary bottle to go forward?” YES! I FIRST MET WITH JESSICA THE HYGIENIST. THIS EXPERIENCE DOES MAKE YOU REALISE THE IMPORTANCE OF WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR YOURSELF TO KEEP YOUR TEETH AND GUMS HEALTHY. THE NEED FOR REGULAR AND CORRECT TECHNIQUES OF ORAL HYGIENE IS VITAL TO AVOID GUM DISEASE IN THE LONG RUN.
is was followed by root canal treatment for one of my teeth which I gather had a dormant infection in it. I met Ash’s colleague Dr Firas Daoudi who specialises in this treatment. Once again, having heard all the horror stories, I can honestly say the treatment was comfortable and successful. After the foundation was healthy, Ash built the tooth up with the latest techniques using fibre-reinforced composite to make the core of the tooth, followed by a porcelain crown to protect the tooth and make it look natural. On Friday 8th April I met Dr Andreas Weigt, the oral maxillofacial surgeon and implantologist that works with Ash. He carried out the bone augmentation procedure, which was required in the upper jaw to increase the height and width of the available bone for future implants. I was scared but positive about the outcome. I was surprised how the whole procedure went, and this is testament to the skill and experience of Andreas who I understand has placed over 5000 implants and carried out over 2000 bone grafts. e gums healed well, and I had the stitches out within a week or so. e process to get my fixed teeth had finally begun!

health beauty PERFECTING MY SMILE How can I describe the next stage? I entrusted myself and my mouth to Ash who would re-master my top front teeth. After extensive discussion on the best way forward, and respecting my budget, Ash recommended a process which would rebuild my front teeth using composite, tooth coloured filling material. In literally one long visit, he artistically sculpted and bonded the material in layers on all my upper front teeth. When I smiled, I did not show my upper teeth at all. Ash said he could fix that by making them longer so that when I smiled, I would look younger. It was the deal decider as far as I was concerned. Who wouldn’t want to look younger…!
A new smile for Christine
Of course all this treatment has required lengthy time in the ergonomically designed dentist chair, but with digital headphones and all the music I could possibly want, I lost myself in enjoying the sounds, which took me away from what was going on. e relaxing aromatherapy, calming and professional approach of the dentist and staff, the special Tempur cushion to support my neck, and holding the hand held buzzer to stop Ash at any time are just some of the things that made me feel at ease.
When I was sent to have my “smile design” pictures taken, I enjoyed my time at Capture Photo Studio where I was given a make up makeover and hair style for my new pictures. at was a lovely experience with great pictures. www.capturephotostudio.com Teeth before treatment
Ash was one of the principle dentists on the three series of the TV programme Extreme Makeover UK. He has a phenomenal selection of patients he has treated with amazing before and after photos to help clients understand how they will look and feel after treatment. Despite his “celebrity status”, I have found him to have great humility and to be genuinely caring. In my opinion dentistry has reached new heights and no longer holds the trauma of days gone by. I might even be tempted to look into the facial aesthetics also on offer at the practice to enhance the look and feel of my face. Watch this space! Teeth after treatment
I was able to enjoy my new front teeth immediately after the treatment. I feel so reassured that all my old, discoloured fillings have been changed and there is no more decay in my top teeth! Ash assured me that my main goal now is maintenance, and I am so much more motivated to look after my new smile!
To book a complimentary initial consultation to meet Extreme Makeover cosmetic dentist Ash Parmar, phone 020 8500 0544 and visit the informative website www.smiledesignbyash.co.uk ALSO, ALL READERS SHOULD VISIT WWW.SMILEDESIGNBYASH.CO.UK/PRIVILEGE FOR SPECIAL OFFERS VIA THE PRIVILEGE CARD
To complement the colour of my new upper composite veneers, Ash suggested the latest and best in teeth whitening – ZOOM. is consisted of a mould into which tiny amounts of whitening gel was inserted daily and then placed onto the teeth. I had to take this on holiday with me – it’s funny, whilst I was getting a tan, my teeth were going whiter! Friends joined us and as they are very close, I was keen to get a reaction. What a reaction it was – “oh wow” they said, in unison. Every aspect of the change was commented on and I went to bed that night feeling very happy indeed. It’s been a few weeks now since I last visited the practice. I will soon have some old metal amalgam fillings replaced with white ones, and will then be ready for the implant placement which takes six months for the bone graft to heal properly.

ome long ttime ago, when w there were no more than a dozen di eerent isssues of Fishmedia magazines, I wrote an article i luding inc l di m mentio ti n of my f riend of m fr many years,, Kenneth Sears,, whose h family comes f rom Marsworth,, one of a cluster of charming villages and hamlets not far ffrrom Tring. The Sears were Sires to the Fr French knights who came over in the late 15th centur y, and settled in the area. But as few people could spell in those daays,, by the time names were written down we had offtten adopted phonetic spelling, and so as Sear was the sound of the Fr French word Sire, that ’s how it was written. In Marsworth Church there are several hatchments recording the lives and deaths of various members of the Sears family including one which confuses many people by stating:- Mrs Henrietta Sears,, Spinster. In the 18th and 19th centuries it was customar y to give the title of Mrs to any unmarried woman who was involved in a proffessio e n or in trade. Miss or rather Mrs Sears was in fact a teacher. Two other points of interest arise ffrrom this and ial other hatchments,, memor me testaments,, gravestones and the like. One is that any memorial tribute was and alwaays will be made to conffor o m to the latest fashionable shape in the decorative arts,, so once you become acquainted and familiar with their chronological changes it is easyy,, with no more than a glance, to discern ffrrom which era or period one will date ffrrom. For example the rather delicate classical vase shape entablature which bears Henrietta ta’’s details, and that of her mother and father adjacent,, is ttyypical of the last quarter of the 18th and early 19th centuries,, their inscribed dates of death are f rom 1792,, 1798 and 1807. The inuence of this shape

Historical Mediterranean suddenly enraptured middle England. W hereas the late 17th and most of the 18th centur y memorials show great amboyance in theirr ffrrames – correctly called cartouches – as if made of sti curled paper or stylised draper y in the baroque and rococo manner, as is clearly evident in the earlier Sears memorial dated 1773. Secondly the ttyypeface will also conffoorm to the latest fashionable script,, seen se in any published works of the time. This helps us todaayy to t establish
nyy the authenticity of an engraved or car ved dates and initials on furniture, metalware or glass.,, particularly when an early date will enhance the commercial value. Such simple guides rather than rules,, ffor or ten exceptions there are so offten just when you don’t expect them,, can add enormously to the sheer fun of just looking around. All the above was brought to mind when I was visiting Marsworth Church Festival of F lowers at the end of August. W hile there and by coincidence I spotted a really lovely 17th centur y joint – or more correctly joined – stool. I picked it up as one would naturally do, ffor or me it ’s a reex action,, and assuring the rest of the visitors that I was not practising ffor or a TV appearance, found to my delight another easy-to-spot guide. Early joined furniture was constructed by the ffrrames being held together with mortice and tenon joints secured with long split willow pegs which ffor or some reason were rarely if ever cut o when they protruded inside or underneath,, as sho sh wn in the illustration. This possible idleness was corrected in the manufacture of V ictorian and later copies. So seeing the extended peg ends coupled with the general crustiness of the oak timbers’ sur s face I had in my hands a stool made around soon affter ter 1660, 1660,, during the Restoration of Charles II. You have to wonder how ever many bottoms had sat on that stool in the inter vening years or indeed how many
coďŹƒns had been rested thereon. These stools are sometimes called coďŹƒn stools ffor or that reason,, they were considered a convenient height and were sturdyy, but it was not n their original purpose; they were essentially secular, domestic bits of furniture. Another totally functional piece is the chair illustrated. A reader sent in the photograph curious as to its histor y. Stylistically it is early to mid-18th centur y and almost certainly could be catalogued as Weelsh. The gently cur ved fr f rame to the back,, around a deeply ďŹ elded, or bevelled,, panel ar a e typical feeatures. The drawer to the f ront rail – which appears to be missing - was a popular feeature, sometime being made to draw out to the side. Even without the drawer it is a ďŹ ne example of its type with great character and good rich colour throughout. I am pleased to saay having read in full the reader’s email I see that the chair was found found in a cottage in Wales. a There are other pieces of interest in Marsworth Church but my vision was obscured by the quite wonderful ower arrangements. Imagination, by air and abilittyy enhanced enh glorious colours were on show in abundance and I have to agree with the committee that this yyear ear of this bibi-annual event was better than ever. One last good reason for for o visiting the Marsworth Church is that like ever y village church it has a village pub within a few steps walking distance, and here, at The Red Lion is where we all gather her ffor or a congratulator y pint, int,, and discuss the merits of all we have seen,, and learned a little something on the waayy. n these difficult economic times, and ever increasing pressure on household budgets, saving has now taken precedent over spending, unless it is for the absolute essentials. e nicer things in life, like a new kitchen or bedroom maybe, are being put on hold because of the ‘shall I shan’t I, will I won’t I attitude’, evolving out of genuine concern for what the future might hold. MOTORS
THE STORY
OF Q
THE AUDI Q SERIES SUV RANGE IS ABOUT TO WELCOME ITS THIRD MODEL When the Audi Q7 burst onto the market in 2006 the world of SUVs had changed forever. Entering a market dominated by quasi-agricultural vehicles, the Q7 immediately demonstrated its unique credentials as an up to the minute luxury performance vehicle that could do it all. With its purposeful and muscular coupe styling and class-beating driving dynamics, the new model combined the poise and comfort of a luxury performance car, with the practicality and space of a large estate vehicle – and all with a genuine off-road capability in even the toughest terrain. Add to this a choice of powerful yet highly efficient petrol and diesel engines, class-leading Quattro four wheel drive plus classic Audi design values, and the Q7 was suddenly very much in demand and leading the field in the rapidly expanding 4x4 market. Four years later and the by then highly successful Audi Q7 was joined by a mid- sized stablemate, the Audi Q5. Designed to deliver exceptional performance both on and off road, plus provide copious passenger and luggage space, this eminently practical model was also an instant hit, generating a waiting list for the first 18 months until production could catch up with demand. In common with the Audi Q7, the Q5 is available in a choice of equipment levels, rising from a far from basic “standard trim” to levels of luxury that would not look out of place in a limousine. Now discerning SUV drivers can look forward to a third model to complete the Audi range in the form of the brand new Audi Q3. Featuring a choice of Quattro four wheel drive or an efficiency-focused front wheel drive variant which promises 54.3 mpg combined, the new model will offer a lower cost entry to the world of the Audi Q Series. Despite its relatively compact 4.4 metre length, the Q3 provides a deceptively spacious cabin and a 1,365 litre load capacity, making the new model as versatile as it is appealing. e new Audi Q3 is priced from £24,560 and Essex Audi Centres are taking orders now for the first models, which will be available from November onwards. For more information on any aspect of Audi cars or to arrange a test drive in the model of your choice, please contact your nearest Essex Audi Centre, details of which can be found at www.essex-audi.co.uk 58
