As the world watched as athletes from around the globe travelled to Stratford, the Olympic Stadium was just a minimum of 10 minutes from most of this magazine’s readership.(Brentwood and Epping being further away). As G4S buckled under Buckles, would the Olympics be a success or a fiasco? As media reported the necessity for police and armed services to fill the security void, excitement was thwarted with concern. But then it started… A fabulous opening ceremony which celebrated British history: the Industrial Revolution, success and recognition for the role of arts including music and literature, the NHS which also celebrated Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) and its links with J.J. Barrie. Picture perfect images of London’s key attractions; humour as featured with Mr. Bean as a fantasist and one note wonder, e Queen with James Bond, making a rather unusual entrance via a parachute! David Beckham, looking more like James Bond than Daniel Craig, the torch’s journey to the Stadium and the spectacular display as the torch was lit and fireworks illuminated the sky – we have a variety of Olympics articles to celebrate a wonderful games. A competition by the Jack Petchey Foundation is inviting young people aged 11-25 to create a design for one of its floats in the 2012 Lord Mayor’s Show taking place on Saturday 10th November which will be seen by over two million people. e Lord Mayor’s Show is like no other procession in the world. It’s three miles long, nearly 800 years old and the most prestigious annual event in London’s history. e charity wants entries for a dynamic design to be wrapped around an open top double decker bus as it parades through the streets of the City of London Over 6,000 participants will spend months preparing floats for the amazement of hundreds of thousands of people who line the streets of the City to watch them go by, as well as a live TV audience of millions. We hope you had a wonderful summer break and see you again in October.

What an Incredible ‘ Golden Summer ’ AND JUST AROUND THE CORNER… WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

A

s the world watched as athletes from around the globe travelled to Stratford, the Olympic Stadium was just a minimum of 10 minutes from most of this magazine’s readership.(Brentwood and Epping being further away). David Beckham, looking more like James Bond than Daniel Craig, the torch’s journey to the Stadium and the spectacular display as the torch was lit and fireworks illuminated the sky. e Brits certainly know how to put on a show and we’ve had a lot of practice this year: Diamond Jubilee, Royal Wedding and then the Olympics. ree great events which hopefully will enhance tourism and even more reasons to visit places of historical interest and of course, our patch: Stratford. Finally, the man himself - Lone Ranger and Lone Beatle, Paul McCartney doing his best, to belt out a familiar song. Acoustics slightly off and I’m sure there was a bit of an echo in the opening few lines, but like a true professional, he battled on. Let’s be honest, he must have sung that song – thirty-five billion times and is probably Hey Jude to the max. But he sang, everybody held hands and joined-in – heigh-ho! As opposed to Hey Jude - He’s a Beatle… A fabulous start which heralded a phenomenal amount of gold, silver and bronze medals. TEAM GB’S 2012 OLYMPIC SUCCESS Gold 29 Silver 17 Bronze 19 ird place after China and United States but looking at the statistics – I think we surpassed the top two winners. ACCORDING TO PUBLIC DATA – POPULATIONS AS FOLLOWS: China: 1,344,130,000 (Source: World Bank) United States: 311,591,917 (Source: US Census Bureau) Great Britain: 62,641,000 (Source: World Bank) SO JUST HOW GREAT WAS TEAM GB’S SUCCESS? INCREDIBLE! With all the interest, euphoria and enthusiasm for these wonderful results, UK Sport will now receive over £500 million over the next four years. Can Team GB 2016 improve those results in Rio? Part of the funding will be from the Treasury and most from the National Lottery. So as you buy your ticket (or tickets) and dream about spending £148 million on more than a celebratory Dominos Pizza – you will be fact be contributing. (Adrian and Gillian Bayford took

10

their children out for a pizza after learning of their incredible win). Which reminds me of an old joke: After a lottery winner settled down to enjoy his new and exciting wealth, he was asked what he would do about the begging letters? His reply – “I’ll still keep writing them.” For others celebrating good news – Congratulations to everybody who received great A’level and AS level results.

LOCAL PROPERTY

Phillip Leigh PHILLIP LEIGH 'S LOCAL PROPERTY MARKET A HOT AUGUST NIGHT I write this piece, as I do each year, at our holiday hideaway in the “hustle and bustle” town of Juan les Pins. e town that, at this time of year, bursts at its seams with over 150 visitors. Returning, in mid-September, to a sleepy indigenous population of about the size of Chigwell. Being away in August seems to assuage my conscience as it’s traditionally

CHIGWELL CALL TO DISCUSS PRICE

the quietest market of the year, and this year has proven no exception. Having said that, should we have “shut-up” shop for these four weeks, as many French businesses do, we would have missed out in putting together excellent sales and lettings, and receiving a few top quality instructions, which we will bring to the market in mid-September. Both the sales and lettings markets are still extremely price sensitive, with good activity below £750,000 for houses, and £500,000 for apartments. Landlords seeking tenants above £4,000 per month are still finding life difficult, but even at this time of year, there is added competition for any property priced under £1200 per calendar month. ere are still a number of footballers,

CHIGWELL £950,000

CHIGWELL £1,999,995

however, who are interested in renting a big “all singing and all dancing” home. One of Spurs first team players is looking for a buyer for his lavish Chigwell home, as he plans to move to be near to Tottenham Hotspur’s new training ground. Having acted as official property advisers to Spurs for the past eight years, we have been extremely successful in putting together some outstanding deals in both sales and rentals. Back in the pre-recession days of 2007 we sold a fabulous house to a young French signing in a popular road just behind our Chigwell office. Being almost totally re-built by one of the best local builders it achieved an excellent price at that time. Sadly following the player’s transfer abroad sometime ago,

it is now crying out for some TLC. However, priced at just £950,000 it certainly represents excellent value and we expect that it will find a new caring owner very quickly. e owners of another fine detached house that we have confidentially marketed for some time, have now decided, as they are going to reside abroad for the majority of the year, they will take our advice to dramatically reduce the price to encourage a quick sale. You can be the proud owner of this excellent Chigwell property, which is set in a very generous plot, and has a great Conservatory looking out South West over the manicured third fairway of Chigwell Golf Course. All this for around the same price as a very modest house a few doors away which was

purchased last year, and has now been demolished to make way for an amazing mini-mansion. Talking of such, if you are looking for a fine house of around 8,000 sq.ft, having six bedroom suites, a fitness suite with wave pool and fine reception rooms and kitchen to die for, at a price not far short of what it would cost to re-build today, please call us now. We look forward to hearing from you following the holiday period should you require our help in either finding or selling a very special home. In the meantime I must saunter slowly back to the beach to enjoy yet another bowl of Soup de Poisson of lightly seared Tuna washed down with a glass or two of Chateau Maine Rose. Charity Donation Supports Appeal

CHARITY DONATION SUPPORTS APPEAL L2R BARRY DANIELS, LINDA LUSARDI, STEVE ARNOLD

WORDS: CHRISTINE BAKER PICTURE: STEPHEN POVER

A

ctress and TV celebrity Linda Lusardi took delivery of a photocopier/printer on behalf of charity the Rhys Daniels Trust donated by United Technologies Ltd (UTL) a local leading service provider of a wide range of office machinery

products. e Rhys Daniels Trust, based in Epping, was set up in 1994 by Barry Daniels to celebrate the young lives of his children Charly and Rhys Daniels which were cruelly cut short by Battens Disease. e charity provides unique ‘Home from Home’ facilities supporting specialist children’s hospitals. It provides accommodation and a safe haven of comfort and security for families whose children are being treated for a variety of conditions at hospitals a long way from home. is grew out of the harrowing times spent by the Daniels family while each of their children were receiving specialist medical attention far from home. Linda Lusardi, who lives in Cheshunt, said “When I first heard about what had happened to these two young children I was beside myself. As a mother I wanted to do all I could to help and I have been an Ambassador for the charity ever since. I know how hard Barry works to raise funds to help families just like his to cope with the demands of managing treatment for their children. Being able to offer a ‘home from home’ for all the family helps deal with much of the stress that surrounds being in a strange place.” 14

SEPTEMBER2012

Barry Daniels said “Since meeting Steve Arnold and his wish to support our charity and give something back, it’s a great feeling to meet someone keen on helping our ‘Home from Home’ project. ese are services we need and in donating a state of the art machine we will save thousands of pounds which in turn will make a significant difference to our fundraising. We are most grateful.” UTL, run by Steve Arnold and his brother Tim, has generously donated a Canon colour multifunctional Copier/Printer/Scanner from the company’s wide range of photocopiers, fax machines, printers, telecoms and IT. Based in eydon Garnon, the company is celebrating 10 years in business. At a time of great austerity this is a magnificent gesture which the company is extending to all charities and not for profit organisations that would be interested in receiving the same support. Steve Arnold said “We pride ourselves on supporting the local community. Donating an office machine that will significantly reduce overheads and still provide vital practical support for fundraising makes sense. e Rhys Daniels Trust is typical of many charities that rely on office equipment only to find that the cost outweighs the benefits. COOPER PAUL CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS ACQUISITION OF B. W. HOLMAN & CO. from initial set-up, the accountant’s relationship with clients generally spans many years and the knowledge gained as the business develops, proves invaluable. “It is about the clients, existing, new or potential. How we can look after them in order to maintain their high levels of trust and confidence. It has been our formula so far and will continue to be our priority.” Brian Jones, Partner Cooper Paul

Partners: Colin Corrigan, Barry Conway and Brian Jones

E

stablished Loughton chartered accountants, Cooper Paul, recently announced their acquisition of B.W. Holman & Co. is professional arrangement is an exciting development, as the expansion offers more opportunities for business development and high-level customer care. “Local people know us and trust us. We have some clients who have been with us over 40 years. We know our clients’ business and how effective maintenance and management can turn small companies into valuable heirlooms; especially when children and even grandchildren are brought into the family business.”

Brian Jones, Partner Cooper Paul

When Barry Holman of B. W. Holman & Co. decided that it was time to retire, he analysed other local accountants with a SME (small and medium enterprises) client base and especially a practice that shared similar values. He focused on the professionals who would take comparable responsibility for his clients and their businesses. It was essential that the combined practice would maintain the same level of trust and professional integrity that he 16

SEPTEMBER2012

had established throughout his many years in practice. From a long-standing professional and personal friendship with Brian Jones and Barry Conway, he knew both instinctively and professionally, that his clients would fit most comfortably within Cooper Paul. In addition, both practices are based in Loughton and the partners are personally involved with all their clients. Barry Holman was confident and assured that his clients would benefit from a smooth and effective transition. “When you know the intricacies of a client’s business and have developed a relationship with the business owners, you feel responsible for their well-being and professional welfare. I had set my standards and the criteria necessary for the responsibility of my clients and Cooper Paul fulfilled my expectations.” Barry Holman, Partner Cooper Paul

Furthermore, Cooper Paul is retaining key members of B. W. Holman & Co.’s staff in order to ensure ongoing momentum and continuity. “Clients are emotionally involved with their businesses. From my own commercial and practical experience, I have a special edge in understanding

what it feels like on the other side of the table. It can be scary but not when you speak to a professional who sees your perspective and understands your genuine concerns.”

DURING SEPTEMBER AND OCTOBER, COOPER PAUL WILL BE HOLDING ACCOUNTANCY SURGERIES. VISITORS WILL BE OFFERED A COMPLIMENTARY 30 MINUTE CONSULTATION WITH A PARTNER.

Colin Corrigan, Partner – Cooper Paul

NO APPOINTMENT WILL BE NECESSARY.

Another key factor in Cooper Paul’s prominence is the tax expertise and advice given by Barry Conway. “Having worked in the City for many years, I am familiar with HNWI (high net worth individuals) and the importance of tax saving services and advice. At Cooper Paul, we offer our clients access to our prestigious business connections in this quagmire of rules and regulations. Nobody wants to pay more tax than they should – understanding the intricacies is essential for forward thinking companies and individuals, who value our advice and support network of West End tax specialists.”

THESE WILL TAKE PLACE ON THE FOLLOWING MONDAYS BETWEEN 6.30 P.M. - 8 P.M. 10TH AND 24TH SEPTEMBER AND 1ST AND 15TH OCTOBER

Barry Conway, Partner – Cooper Paul

As two Loughton practices combine to offer their clients top levels of advice and service, all the partners and team are excited by this new development. Research shows that the most trusted ally on the side of business decision makers is the accountant. Normally involved

BEING PREPARED FOR

School or University WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

A

s the end of August beckons, holidays are drawing to a close, relaxed timetables and schedules are put back on the fridge, and it’s not just the children or students who have to make the necessary changes. Parents too are always involved to ensure everything is in place and the new, stricter regimes and promises are honoured. It’s Back to School… For most parents, we’re all familiar with the routine. Checking the uniform still fits the obligatory purchase of a new school bag to add a certain excitement to a date which most children dread. For some children, the onslaught of homework, teachers, detentions and examinations are not a new routine to get excited about! (Assuming all these things still happen!) But for others, it’s about seeing friends, camaraderie and just catching-up on all the news. Assuming these children don’t have access to a mobile phone or a computer and therefore social media such as Facebook! Personally, I can’t think of any child who doesn’t have access to either of these. Most have both anyway… Oh how things have changed since I went to school. I had a wooden desk, inkwell and groove for the pencil! An uncomfortable wooden chair, teachers that used the cane or ruler on your knuckles and running around the school playground in the rain. Mathematics without a calculator, writing without a computer and endless trips to the library if needing to research. If only I had known about Human Rights. SO WHAT’S NEEDED FOR THE RETURN?

University Always worth checking vaccinations are up-to-date – especially for students going to university. Ensure that the MMR booster has 18

SEPTEMBER2012

been administered – every few years there are dangerous outbreaks of mumps and measles. A big shop at Sainsbury’s or Tesco for a range of Basics or Economy: kettle, toaster, iron – and why do they always add a sandwich maker as part of the pack? What student makes toasted sandwiches? Especially good are the Sainsbury’s in Loughton, Epping and South Woodford. A very good friend of mine (Sharon) found a portable cylinder warm Air Blower. Great for students in digs. ey can dry their clothes in a few hours which is practical and healthier. Worth checking online for this incredible device. Computer ink, paper, pens, perhaps a new battery for the computer, a laptop cooler as computers can be on for hours when studying. Plenty of money in parents’ bank account to make regular transfers!

School A lot of children get ill in the first few weeks at school. e odd cough or cold here or there becomes a widespread problem when 20-40 (dependent upon the school) are crammed together in a warm classroom. Uniforms and shoes that fit! Shoe shops are very busy at this point and your child’s shoes may need to be ordered. Always harder to cram this essential visit in after school. A selection of children’s presents for the imminent birthday parties. So when you’re in the high street and passing a supermarket or pharmacy, it may be worth picking up all these essentials before you need them ■

Making Special Dreams Come True SUPPORTING ‘KIDS IN NEED’ WORDS: MICHELLE HARRIS

S

ummer holidays are a great time to indulge our children. Birthdays, Christmas and Chanukah too! We give these gifts with love whilst savouring the wonderful moment when anticipation turns into animated excitement. Going beyond what we do for our own children, is an important role for a group of local volunteers, predominantly based in Epping, Brentwood, Chigwell and Barkingside. Although juggling careers and other responsibilities, they devote some of their spare time to help turn wishes into realities for young people aged 3 to 19, who are terminally/seriously ill, or who suffer from multiple disabilities. e volunteers aspire to grant as many wishes as possible. All money received, either from fund raising or donations, is used to grant wishes. A WISH ENHANCES THE QUALITY OF A CHILD’S LIFE

…or can be a necessity, like a child’s car seat; perhaps a shared experience with the family, for instance a special holiday. Very sadly, many children do not reach adulthood and it’s important that the family as a unit, can also share a wonderful experience… Speaking to Gemma Scoines, Chair of Kids in Need, she stated: “I joined KIN (Kids in Need) as my mother was one of the founding members. I saw my mother’s amazing work and was allowed, as a child, to help as a volunteer. As an adult, I joined the committee and am now the Chair person. I am truly very proud to be associated with this charity. It’s our 30th anniversary this year.” Speaking about the current economic climate and whether they were experiencing problems, she commented that: “Times were tough for all charities – but Kids In Need would never give-up or stop.” An example of an important wish was for a little girl who needed a page turner so she could read a book. e quality of her life was improved from her ability to escape into a world of literature and fantasy, made possible by a simple gadget. 20

SEPTEMBER2012

A five year old girl with a variety of learning difficulties and autism wanted an iPad. After the wish was granted, her mother wrote to elaborate upon the improvement in her daughter’s life: "ank you very much for the iPad that Kids in Need have donated to my daughter Caroline (name changed). is will assist her with her learning as we can use visual aids which will help everyone including Caroline with communication difficulties. It will ease her frustration as we will be able to show her images of anywhere new, as well as a store of photographs, of people and places we have visited. It will also be great for her to play games and watch her favourite episodes of childrens’ programmes, by using You Tube. Many thanks once again." Once a year the charity organises a FUN DAY. Families who have been granted wishes, all meet up and celebrate together. Gemma added: “Donations are always hugely helpful, not only by donating money. We have various events coming up and we always need prizes to help us, so anything that we can use is always appreciated.” CURRENT OUTSTANDING WISHES SUBMITTED LAST MONTH INCLUDE:

12” Trampoline with safety surround – For child with Autistic Spectrum Disorder Xbox with games – Child with Selective Mutism Ipad – Aspergers Syndrome and Autistic (although there are many requests for iPads) Crelling harness for safe transport in car - Low functioning autism & profound global developmental delay. hat one person may consider being bric-à -brac, may be worth millions to a collector. We can’t all be experts and ascertaining the difference between what is valuable and what is rubbish, is a task for the trained eye and expert rather than for the layman. Particularly popular at the moment are Chinese objects. Recently a jade bangle with an estimated value of £400-£600 – eventually sold for £29,000 at Boningtons in Loughton. With clients around the world, bids were flying in at an exciting rate… However Boningtons already knew there would be a lot of interest. As soon as the bangle appeared in the catalogue, they were receiving urgent enquiries: the jade’s shade, whether treated etc. Currently, the most exciting antiques are Chinese and the experts at Boningtons strongly advise that if you have anything Chinese, have it valued. You just never know what it might be worth. Boningtons are very proud of their reputation as a major auction house. Shaban Munir, managing director stated: “Our auctions are live and because of our reputation, we have an extensive international clientele. Also our own in-house expertise, coupled with access to experts in the British Museum such as Dr. Iside Carbone, ensures a keen interest from our database of collectors.”* Another example of an exciting discovery was the lost work by Victorian painter, William Powell Frith. Having received an unsigned painting, Luke Bodalbhai, specialist picture valuer, was intrigued. He sensed this was more than just another Victorian painting and therefore made all the necessary checks. Eventually the painting was shown to Frith expert Mark Bills, Curator of the Watts Gallery, who endorsed the attribution to Frith and also stated that

the painting was probably exhibited at the French Gallery exhibition in 1863. Luke commented: “You just never know what’s going to come in off the street and that’s what makes it so exciting here.” Clearly inspired by his work at Boningtons, his enthusiasm is contagious as he talks of other premium objects in the auction world. A seemingly inconspicuous vase that used to sit on top of a bookcase, in a semi-detached house in Ruislip. It was valued at a few thousand pounds yet reached £43milllion. By the way, it was Chinese and had been made in the Imperial kilns during the time of Qianlong. Looking forward to the next auction on November 7th, the theme is e Krays. With a collection of over 80 pieces, including a guitar, easel and selection of paintings, for those who have a fascination with these most deadly of duos, souvenirs and objects owned by Ronnie and Reggie will be available at Boningtons, so please keep an eye on their website. But there is more to the brothers than most people realise. Recently discovered documents proved that the Krays donated £100 to the Aberfan fund. is disaster occurred on 21st October 1966 when a landslide in a Welsh village (Aberfan) killed 116 children and 28 adults. A letter acknowledging receipt of the Krays’ donation was sold last year (at another auction) for £110. Auctions, surprises and millionaires. Who knows when you might find that certain something, that could completely change your life? As Del Boy always said to Rodney: “is time next year, we’ll be millionaires” and then the infamous discovery of a Harrison watch in the garage…

Happy Antique Hunting! *Please see website for more details: www.boningtons.com

Design A FloatCompetition FOR THE LORD MAYOR’S SHOW

JPF FLOATS IN LORD MAYORS SHOW COMBINED

A

competition by the Jack Petchey Foundation is inviting young people aged 11-25 to create a design for one of its floats in the 2012 Lord Mayor’s Show taking place on Saturday 10th November which will be seen by over two million people. Lee ompson, Head of Events at the charity said “We want the design to showcase our work with young people so it’s got to be colourful, vibrant, youthful and full of energy. We are excited that this year we can make our work come alive in this way and it’s a great opportunity for creative young people out there to see their design come to life too. We want our bus to be the envy of London!” 24

SEPTEMBER2012

e design will be brought to life by professional graphic designers and will cover the entire bus. e winner will also have the opportunity to accompany the bus on the parade as it travels through the City of London in front of hundreds of thousands of people. Plus four fantastic tickets for the Grandstand at St Pauls. e design should be based around the four core values of the Jack Petchey Foundation: Encouragement; Motivation; Inspiration and Recognition. Lee ompson says “You don’t have to be an excellent designer or illustrator; it’s more about creativity in a big and bold design and being adventurous.” e judging will be done in conjunction with Dominic Reid OBE, Pageantmaster of the Lord Mayors Show. Closing date for the competition is Friday 21st September. Entries must be sent to Lee ompson, Jack Petchey Foundation, Exchange House, 13-14 Clements Court, Clements Lane, Ilford, Essex IG1 2QY or email lthompson@petchey.co.uk. ROYDON MARINA VILLAGE CUTTING THE COSTS OF CANAL BOAT MOORINGS

T

he average cost of mooring your boat along the ames is between £5,500 £6,500 inc. VAT per year for a 52’ boat. at seems to be a fairly reasonable figure when you consider that you are only a 30-45 minute commute to the office in the centre of London. Most people have a mooring in an area that is peaceful and close to parking and local amenities and not to far away from a station that takes you into London. All things considered this sounds like a cost effective way of having a base near to London without paying the exorbitant prices associated with the surrounding areas. Yes you still have to pay out for your season ticket, which will

26

SEPTEMBER2012

probably cost you in the region of £3,000 a year, but that is part of working in London or the surrounding areas. at works out at £9,500 a year, still less than renting a flat but its starting to add up! For nearly £4,000 a year less you can have exactly the same lifestyle! Roydon Marina Village is a 315 berth marina set on a tranquil 32 acre lake, within the Lee Valley Park, surrounded by stunning countryside. ere is a train station at the entrance of the park that is only 30 minutes from Stratford and 40 minutes from London Liverpool Street. Each berth comes with an electric hook up point, free water, free Wi-Fi, 2 parking permits and a host of other facilities.

Annual berthing fees are available from £1 per foot per week! at means that instead of paying £5,500-£6,500 per year for mooring your 52’ boat you will only be paying £2696.88 inc. VAT for the year! And to save you the time and hassle of moving your boat they will do it for you....for free! Impressed by the tranquil settings and excellent facilities many are still surprised to find they even exist in this rural part of Essex. Approached by a newly laid road along side

year round which is unusual for a holiday park as most licenses are for 8 or 10 months. e purchase of holiday homes is also becoming extremely popular as an alternative form of investment. Many people are already familiar with the purchase of hotel rooms as an investment and lodges are not to dissimilar. However it is not just investors that can benefit from owning a lodge at Roydon Marina Village. Many people are now buying holiday homes

the Stort Navigation, abundant with wildlife, the first glimpses of the park is an old mill, now converted into flats, and a weir pool. Follow the road around to the car park and you will find their hotel and “Henderson”, the on site bar and restaurant. Driving through the park you are greeted by the stunning vista of the marina, laid out before you on a 32 acre lake. Berth holders and visitors can relax and unwind in the waterside cafe and bar situated in the marina facilities building, which also houses the showers, toilets and laundry facilities. ere are also a range of luxury holiday homes on the park which are available to purchase or hire. e accommodation is available all

and sub-letting them to parks to use for the rest of the year. Not only does this ensure that your home is kept in top condition but also generates an income that is subject to a number of tax benefits. Staff are always on hand to show you around the marina and park and explain the different options that are available to you so feel free to call and arrange an appointment. ST JAMES__ 24/08/2012 12:45 Page 1

GENDER PRICING ALL’S FAIR IN LOVE, WAR AND INSURANCE PREMIUMS Have you ever wondered why women tend to pay less for car insurance than men, or why men get more bang for their buck when they convert their pension into an annuity? It is all to do with the practice of gender-based pricing used by insurers to calculate the premiums we pay. But it is a practice that is about to be outlawed thanks to a landmark ruling – a ruling that will soon affect how much you pay for insurance or get from your pension fund. e European Court of Justice in Luxembourg has ruled that using differences between men and women as a risk factor in setting premiums for car and medical insurance and pension schemes breaches EU rules on equality. "Taking the gender of the insured individual into account as a risk factor in insurance contracts constitutes discrimination," the court said in a statement. How it will affect you will depend on your age, medical condition and gender, although it is anticipated that more men than women will be better off as a result. If you have a teenage son you will be all too aware of the sky-high cost of insurance. If you have a daughter of a similar age, you’ll be relieved to learn that although it is still expensive, premiums are lower for young female drivers. Younger female drivers pay significantly less than their male counterparts because they are less likely to be involved in accidents and therefore, less likely to make a claim. But while the equalisation of motor premiums will make all the headlines because of its mass-market need, all insurance policies from life cover to private medical insurance will be impacted. With private medical insurance (PMI), for example, gender differences in medical conditions can explain why premiums tend to be higher for females aged 35 to 55, but they are lower for females than for males from the age of 60 onwards (ABI Research Paper 24 – e Use of Gender in Insurance Pricing). . With life insurance and pension annuities, the difference in premiums or benefits can be explained by differences in the life expectancy of men and women. Owing to their lower mortality risk, women benefit from lower premiums on life insurance, but because they will live longer they will get a lower annuity income from their pension.

e deadline may be around six months away, but people need to reassess their situation as soon as possible. Policies that are up and running before December 21 will not be affected by the ruling and so it may pay to review your situation now. e savings could be considerable, particularly once you factor in the length of the policy. Experts suggest that the cost of life cover and critical illness rates for both men and women could rise by around 25 per cent (ABI News Release, 1 March 2011). If this is the case, you could save yourself £6,000 by paying £200 a month on a 10-year policy rather than paying £250 a month. And while the beginning of Christmas week might seem a long way off people who want to revisit their critical illness, PMI or life insurance policies ought to get a move on because it is not just a case of signing on the dotted line. Medicals will have to be arranged and processed before an application is approved – and this could take up to three months. In short, an application submitted in September could struggle to beat the deadline. THERE IS ANOTHER REASON FOR NOT RESTING ON YOUR LAURELS. Insurers may start to change their pricing ahead of the deadline. Indeed, it would appear that motor insurers are doing just that. According to the latest AA Index, motor premiums for young male drivers fell by almost 1 per cent over the first three months of this year, while the cost of cover for young women increased by 4.8 per cent. e inability for insurers to use gender will not necessarily make pricing fairer, but it will make insurance more expensive for many and reduce pension income for many too. It’s why you should act sooner rather than later. Our red-hot sole mate CHRISTIAN LOUBOUTIN REVEALS WHAT MAKES A GOOD HEEL, HIS RED SOLE INSPIRATIONS, AND HOW FOOTWEAR IS CHANGING. LISA HAYNES SPEAKS TO THE ICONIC SHOE DESIGNER. You might not know much about Christian Louboutin the man, but his shoes are world-famous. Protected even, like a rare exhibit. Around the time I meet the Parisian heel designer, he's fighting a court case against a major high street brand which has 'imitated' his trademark red sole design. at Louboutin look started out 20 years ago as an experiment when he painted a sole with red nail polish, but it's gone on to

become the brand's iconic stamp. "It immediately became a sort of sign of recognition, a signature, and women would come to me and say, 'It's like a vacuum for guys!'", Louboutin tells me. Despite the legal wranglings, he's far from seeing red when we meet. Me, clad in one of my favourite Louboutin perspex heel boots; him, wearing flat studded loafers flashing those scarlet soles as he

crosses his legs after warmly shaking my hand and offering me a chocolate biscuit. Louboutin, 49, is walking on cloud nine right now: there's a range of cosmetics in the pipeline for next year (Louboutin Red lips, anyone?), he's the top judge for Martini's Royale Casting (the new face of the brand will bag 12 pairs of Louboutins), and a retrospective exhibition at London's Design Museum is currently celebrating his two decades of shoe wizardry. From towering heels to studded sneakers and bejewelled pumps, it's like the best shoe shop in the world, only with 'Don't Touch' signs at every stiletto turn and security guards positioned near the wall of thigh-high boots. "It was hard to choose two hundred!" Louboutin exclaims when I ask him to pick out his favourite pair featured in the exhibition. "I mean some shoes, like the Guinness shoes (with heels constructed from actual cans) we no longer have - not one pair." He goes on to reel off the names of shoes as if they were his children, struggling to single out 'the' style deemed most iconic by Louboutin aficionados. "I mean lately the Pigalle..." he says, before hesitating, "probably. Between the Pigalle and the Lady Lynch - or the Fifi, which has a really high heel with a round toe." So what it is about Louboutin's vision that ensures his shoes are red carpet regulars, fashion industry favourites and capable of commanding upwards of £395 for a classic pair? "Balance. Proportion. And the cleavage," Louboutin replies succinctly, using shoe designer speak for the amount of toes flaunted. "Shoes can do a lot for a woman. ey can give this extra sense of femininity and empowerment." Louboutin's fascination with shoes dates back to when he was just 11 or 12 years old. He recalls discovering a drawing at an African art museum near his parents' apartment that displayed a woman's high heel vividly crossed out in red. "I sort of discovered creativity through that drawing," he says. His now inspirational image of the Fifties-style stiletto, which was intended to safeguard the parquet floor, was a sharp contrast to the Seventies trend for flat or chunky-heeled shoes. Louboutin's love of performance, cabaret and the showgirl later fuelled his glamorous vision. Although he doesn't name one specific muse, he regularly links up with burlesque performer Dita Von Teese at events. "Nobody wears shoes like a dancer on stage," he says. He cites art, architecture, landscape, travel and artefacts as areas from which he draws inspiration. Louboutin packs his suitcase and seeks out a hot climate to design his summer collection and, similarly, a cold bolt-hole to find focus for autumn/winter inspiration. e designer goes to extremes to achieve the right working environment. "I have a house in the country in France and it's often cold but if it's not cold enough I just turn the heat off then I'm sure to be frozen. "I'm quite influenced by the light and by the heat, so it's easier to imagine a super-light sandal when it's boiling outside than furry boots and vice-versa." Just as Louboutin's shoes range from flats to six-inch heels, his personality is full of light and shade, humour and sincerity. Discussing how foot sizes have become bigger during his career, he remarks: "I was just going up to a size 41 (UK 8), but now I have to go all the way to 43 - and then there's the trannies, which make me go all the way to a 47!" Although Louboutin creates flat shoes for men and women, it's the towering stilettos that have brought him worldwide fame.

Ash Parmar Q&A WITH “THE EXTREME MAKEOVER” COSMETIC DENTIST ASH PARMAR after” images – the emotional reaction at the reveal event was always my favourite! Next month, I have some very exciting news for everyone in Essex. Four lucky people will have a once in a lifetime opportunity to have the complete makeover of their dreams. is is the most exciting project I have ever been involved with. Watch this space…

CHANGING LIVES ON EXTREME MAKEOVER UK… As a cosmetic dentist, I am really privileged to have the ability to impact peoples’ lives in a profound way. Many times, I have seen tears of joy when we “reveal” to someone their new smile. Often, people are embarrassed and conscious of their smile and this can directly affect their confidence. is can then have an effect on their personal relationships and careers. I was one of the leading dentists featured on the three series of Extreme Makeover UK (on Living TV). is was a tremendous service that I offered as part of a team of top professionals offering the makeover transformations. In the last year, I have also treated four leading caste members from e Only Way Is Essex. I feel honoured to have been selected by the TV programmes to be the dentist doing the dental work. Due to my experience, I am also approached by the media as a key opinion leader on dental stories. So, how did I first get in to Extreme Makeover UK? Well, it was really inspiration from a leading American dentist called William Dorfman, who was the main dentist on Extreme Makeover in USA. I was in a seminar for 1000 dentists in Vancouver some years back. At the end of his presentation on Extreme Makeover, Dr Dorman received a standing ovation from everyone for his contribution in bringing cosmetic dentistry to the forefront, in the eyes of the general public. I remember thinking this would be really great to do in the UK. So, on my return to London, I approached 42

Because of the media interest on cosmetic dentistry at this time, I was soon featured in leading magazines and national newspapers such as e Times, Daily Mail, the Sunday Times supplement magazine and on is Morning (on ITV). At this time, I also set up my training Academy and began lecturing and training dentists both nationally and internationally. DO YOU HAVE PERSISTENT BACK PAIN, NECK PAIN OR SCIATICA CAUSED BY A HERNIATED DISC OR DEGENERATIVE DISC?

I

f the answer is yes, the IDD erapy spinal decompression programme at Chigwell Osteopathy and Physiotherapy Practice is designed to help.

What is IDD erapy? Intervertebral Differential Dynamics (IDD) erapy is a non-surgical computerised spinal decompression treatment for chronic back and neck conditions. e Practice offers treatment for most back and neck pain with manual therapies but for some patients - particularly those who have disc-related problems - the IDD erapy treatment programme can do more to help their condition improve. IDD erapy is particularly suitable for the following conditions: ● Herniated or prolapsed (‘slipped’) disc ● Degenerative Disc Disease ● Sciatica ● Low back pain ● Neck pain

Robert Shanks

with a patient on the new IDD machine

Who can benefit from IDD erapy? Typical candidates for IDD erapy are people who have had back pain or neck pain for three months or more and find that it is having a negative impact on their lives. ● current treatment is not working ● want to stop taking painkillers ● seeking long-term pain relief ● want to return to normal daily activities

How does IDD erapy work? Many back pain conditions are located at a particular level in the spine. IDD erapy uses computer-controlled pulling forces at precise angles to gently distract (draw apart) targeted segments of the spine in order to take pressure off specific discs and relieve muscle spasm.

work and I couldn’t even do simple household chores.” She tried several manual treatments including osteopathy, acupuncture, facet joint injections and denervation but these only gave her temporary relief and she still suffered regularly with muscle spasms. After her first IDD session Rita felt that something positive was happening. After a series of treatments she is now free of back spasms and pain. She is back at work and able to do her daily chores again.

Will I be comfortable during treatment? Yes, IDD erapy is safe, very gentle and patients feel relaxed during treatment; they wear ergonomic harnesses to support their body whilst on the machine and remain fully-clothed throughout.

What does the IDD erapy treatment programme involve? Patients are fully assessed before embarking on a course of IDD erapy; this assessment includes a review of a current or recent MRI scan result. If scans are not available an MRI may be obtained in order to determine whether IDD is appropriate and to assist in a comprehensive diagnosis. Sessions begin with some infrared heat therapy on the affected area of the spine to ‘warm up’ the muscles and ligaments. At the end of the session some cold therapy is applied to minimize any temporary soreness which may be caused by muscles being worked in a new way. RITA’S STORY Rita, a 63 year old supermarket employee from Chigwell, injured one of the discs in her back back whilst lifting at work. As a result, she experienced extreme muscle spasm and stiffness in her back which made daily activities difficult to carry out; she found simple actions – even deep breaths very demanding. Rita says: “My back pain impacted on every aspect of my life; I had time off

44

SEPTEMBER2012

How many treatments will I need? Patients usually have a series of treatments spread over a number of weeks. As all conditions are different, some patients may feel a symptomatic improvement after a few sessions but for most, the long-lasting therapeutic changes are progressive and can be achived with a course of sessions over 6 – 8 weeks.

I have had surgery on my back in the past – could I still be a possible candidate for IDD? Patients who have had surgery can have treatment, provided that the procedure was not within the previous six months (to allow for complete healing) and there are no surgical implants. For an information pack or to book an assessment, please contact Chigwell Osteopathy & Physiotherapy Practice on 02085010937 www.spineplus.co.uk ■

ost of us have relaxed during the summer. Been on holiday, indulged ourselves perhaps just a tad too much. Resting and relaxation is just that – taking time-out during the holiday season to unwind, let all the pressures go, to pamper and indulge. But now the pressure is back. Back to school, university, work, or even to pursue a new career. When taking time out of the office or business, is when the big decisions are made. Difficult to see situations clearly when you’re very busy, but a breath of fresh air, outside the normal environment, gives a fresh perspective and sometimes, it’s at this point that we realise, we’re not actually where – we would like to be! Most resignations are submitted after summer holidays or Christmas. So having contemplated big decisions and acted upon them, it all starts again in September and ironically, is part of the build up towards the next break - Christmas. Getting in shape, feeling good, fit and active is a great start to the autumn. We really do have so many choices for really excellent gyms and leisure centres. Whether gyms with great facilities, or pampering areas for spa relaxation or beauty treatments for both men and women. Having spoken to many beauticians and professionals within the beauty industry, it is becoming increasingly noticeable that men are taking far more pride in their appearance and also enjoy facials and massage treatments, to help them feel good. And why not? Modern Man is Metro Man – we all feel better after a relaxing facial or massage. Stress levels are high and most people are juggling probably far too much. By taking care and enjoying some time to relax actually enhances productivity. So therefore is 46

GREAT BRITAIN'S MEDAL WINNERS POSING ON THE ROOF OF TEAM GB HOUSE IN STRATFORD, LONDON

ou're not alone if you've bounced up and down on the couch with excitement at watching the Olympic golds, and now feel inspired to try your skills on the trampoline, get on your bike or hit the ground running. Gabrielle Fagan asks experts for advice for sport newbies, so efforts end in golden health and not tears. You're not alone if you've bounced up and down on the couch with excitement at watching the Olympic golds and now feel inspired to try your skills on the trampoline, get on your bike again, or hit the ground running. Cycle sales are soaring, according to Pricerunner.co.uk, a shopping comparison site, which reports an 88% search increase for men's mountains bikes following the gold medal success of Sir Chris Hoy and Bradley Wiggins. Generally, most sporting bodies have experienced a hike in interest, including British Rowing which has had an enormous surge in traffic to its website - a tenfold increase in the regular number of visitors. at's all good news as new research says it's never too late to start exercising and only two-and-a-half hours of moderate activity a week could cut your chances of suffering a heart attack. Heart and circulatory disease causes one in three of all deaths in the UK. e British Heart Foundation-funded scientists confirm that exercise has anti-inflammatory effects, which can protect the heart, and the benefits will be felt even by those who start exercising in middle age. But you need to take care that you don't fall at the first hurdle.

SEPTEMBER2012

e inspirational haze period, which will be further fuelled and extended by the Paralympics (August 29-September 9), is a commonly recognised time when sport newbies or those returning to the gym run the greatest risk of a trip to accident and emergency. All that pumped-up enthusiasm is fine but there's a tendency for many to try to mimic the performances of those sporting icons, a standard far beyond the reach of the average weekend warrior, and the result can be injury and damaged motivation. Russell Bouwman, sport nutritionist at e Nutri Centre, says: "e key thing is to start slow. e idea that you need to be pounding the treadmill for hours to get fit or playing a high-intensity sport such as football or squash three times a week is a little outdated. "Starting slow, maybe by walking or an exercise class, minimises the risk of injury, builds confidence, as well as releasing some of those feel-good brain chemicals called endorphins. "e key is being consistent. As general health and wellbeing is increased, people can then move up to more active sport such as jogging, cycling or swimming if they wish." So on your marks, get set, go for an Olympics-inspired health strategy. GOLDEN TIPS ●

Harness Olympic inspiration and enthusiasm but use it to fuel more determination and consistency in training rather than suddenly pushing your performance beyond your capacity.

Remember Olympic athletes have professional trainers, doctors and coaches looking after them, as well as years of training to enable them to perform safely at those medal-winning levels.

HEALTH BEAUTY

While the hope for a medal keeps Olympians focused, you should have a specific goal in mind too. It could be increasing your time on an exercise bike or rowing machine in a gym to taking part in an event such as a charity run.

Get an assessment of your abilities and current physical standard from a trainer or a club coach if you're returning to sport after a long break, rather than relying on rose-tinted memories of youthful success.

If physically demanding, high-impact sports aren't suitable for you, don't be afraid to explore less demanding activities. Mental stimulation and exercise play an important role in improving brain function. Most clubs welcome new members and many offer taster sessions to allow you to try out an activity before joining.

Listen to your body. e body's ability to heal and recover can take longer as we age, which doesn't mean you need to halt exercise because of every small twinge, but don't ignore a pain or problem that persists beyond a few days. If in doubt, seek medical advice to prevent a short-term interruption becoming a long-term lay off.

A vitamin supplement can give your system a boost, which it may need if you're embarking on a new health regime. Russell Bouwman recommends BioCare's One-a-day Plus, £44.10 for 90 tablets, from e Nutri Centre. A multivitamin with added CoQ10 for energy, it may help with weight loss and recovery after exercise. BEST FOOT FORWARD Our feet bear the brunt of pressure when we exercise, so they need to be treated with care. With 26 bones and 40 joints, the foot is one of the most complex structures in the human body. Before you pound those pavements, make sure you have suitable running shoes, and ideally try to run on the more forgiving surfaces of a track or in a park so that the impact is less jarring on your feet and knees. "When running, the repetition of the foot hitting the ground causes damage to the tissue, resulting in a tight feeling in the sole of the foot," says Dave Wain, podiatrist from Carnation Footcare. He advises trying an orthotic insole, such as Carnation Footcare Powerstep Pinnacle, £47.10, from www.powerstep.co.uk and independent pharmacies. "Orthotic insoles can also be beneficial for runners that over-pronate, an inward rolling of the feet, as they can help to correct gait and, in turn, improve running technique," he says. If foot pain occurs after swimming, running or cycling, he advises using a Carnation PediRoller, £9.48, to help reduce inflammation of the affected tissue and strengthen muscles in the sole of the foot. "Make sure you rest as much as possible and if the problem persists, visit a podiatrist." Wain also stresses the importance of suitable shoes for cycling. "Cycling shoes must have a stable shank to efficiently transfer power from your feet to the pedals, otherwise you run the danger of pain or numbness," he says. :Identify foot problems with the Carnation Footcare Virtual Podiatrist, an online tool where after answering a few simple questions, you will receive a suggested diagnosis and recommendation for suitable treatment. For more information, visit www.carnationfootcare.co.uk

THE MUSCLES WITHIN When starting a new training regime, it's important to take steps to condition and strengthen your body in order to prevent injury and help boost performance. Footballer David Beckham and Team GB swimmer Liam Tancock are just a few of the athletes who've spoken about the benefits of pilates to develop core body strength. "But it's common that when we exercise, we focus on the muscles we can see in the mirror, ignoring the inner muscles," says Lynne Robinson, pilates expert and co-founder of Body Control Pilates. "e problem with targeting only the visible, superficial muscles is that we may be unaware we lack vital core stability, which is essential to protect our back and joints. "It's like building a house on sand which is at risk of collapse with such a poor foundation. Remember, even if you look as if you have a perfectly toned body, it doesn't mean that your core is good." For information on pilates, visit www.bodycontrol.co.uk A HEALTHY BREAK Holidays are a time for relaxing and lounging but we often pay the price on our waistlines, with an average weight gain of around 7lbs (3.23 kg) on an average two-week break - and even more on a cruise, where people gain around 1lb a day. But the 'fly-and-drop' break is giving way to activity holidays, according to research by Obsidian Retreat, a health restoration centre. "ose in their fifties are more likely to incorporate exercise into their holiday this year, with around 72% saying they'd take part in activities such as planned walks, aqua aerobics, a fitness class or tennis," says Andrew West, owner of Obsidian Retreat. "I think the sports fever which is sweeping the nation, thanks to the Olympics, is spurring people on to be healthier while they're away as well as once they get home. "ey're realising that they don't have to be beaten up at a boot camp, or sweating it out on hill climbing, they can relax and enjoy a healthy diet and a variety of activities which leaves them with more energy than they arrived with and they'll look better too." For more information, visit www.healthretreatspain.com IN THEIR FOOTSTEPS Try a new sport or improve your technique at a specialised centre. ere's an array of golden opportunities out there - you just need to make the first step. ●

olidays may be short but the memories can last for decades. Keep them alive at home with reminders of those far-away places in displays and decor touches. Gabrielle Fagan explores high street travelogue style. Let's be honest, a holiday isn't just about relaxing and getting away from it all, it also has status value. Exotic destinations - the farther flung or more unusual the better - give us instant holiday cred and most of us will have boasted about a break. But now our homes can do the talking because travelogue style is hot, whether it's walls and accessories displaying maps, or small touches which give the impression you're always on the move. So introduce a little wanderlust into your home - or satisfy the armchair traveller within - with a trunk full of travel treats for rooms. ● Wonder wall: Be bold and paper a wall with a Vintage Wall map mural, from £99 from bespoke textile and wallpaper printers Digetex (0161 873 8891/www.digetex.com). ● Armchair adventure: Lounge on a Maps cushion, showing a map of the world. £28 from John Lewis (www.johnlewis.com). ● Tray chic: Offer tea and sympathy to those who haven't had a break and serve it on a Photo Tray, on which you can mount nine photographs (holiday or otherwise!). £35 from Cox & Cox (0844 858 0734/www.coxandcox.co.uk). ● All packed up: Have trunk will travel! But even if you don't go anywhere, a hand-made vintage-inspired traveller's trunk is still decorative. From £35-£45 from John Lewis (www.johnlewis.com). ● Picture perfect: A photographic print, featuring your own photographs and personalised with your own title and captions, could be a brilliant way to display a collection of holiday memories. Personalised Polaroid Album Print from £80, by e Drifting Bear, from Not On e High Street (0845 259 1359/www.notonthehighstreet.com). Or list all your favourite places with a Classic Personalised Destination print, from £38, by Betsy Benn, also from Not On e High Street. ● Memory board: Pop tickets and trip 'to do' lists on to a Home Comforts pin board, decorated with a variety of destination stamps. £35 from John Lewis, available from August 31 (www.johnlewis.com). ● Postcard pretty: Text and tweeting may be the fashionable way of communicating that 'wish you were here' message nowadays, but postcards still have traditional charm. Paper a feature wall in Postcard wallpaper, featuring either a collage of the back of old postcards with messages, stamps and addresses; or one depicting vintage style destination photos. Postcard wallpapers available to order from around £54 a square metre from Purldeco (0203 110 0643/www.purldeco.com). ● Name drop trend: Mimic a transatlantic vibe without leaving home. A red New York cushion, £20 from Kenneth Cole's New York Home collection at House of Fraser (available August 31). Add pieces from his New York To China collection, featuring landmarks: Mug, £6, bowl, £6 (0870 160 7270/www.houseoffraser.co.uk).

GET THOSE JOBS DONE WITH A LITTLE HELP FROM DIY GURU JULIA GRAY. THIS MONTH: HOW TO DO THE ELECTRICAL WORK BY THE RULES AND KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE. BY JULIA GRAY

U

nless something goes wrong with your home's electrics (or you get them checked by an electrician, which you should do every 10 years), it's hard to know if they're safe or not, but this is something you don't want to take any chances with. Not only should old-fashioned fuse boxes, sockets, switches and wiring be replaced, but you may need to do electrical work as part of big home improvements, such as fitting a new kitchen, converting the loft, or changing the use of a room. While it may be necessary, changing the electrics can be very dirty and disruptive. If often involves gouging out plaster to create channels for the cables and taking up the floors, making it hard to continue living there while the work's being done. You can legally do some minor electrical work yourself (see www.planningportal.gov.uk or ask your local council's building control department if in doubt), but it's generally a good idea to get a qualified electrician in. e easiest option is to employ an electrician who belongs to a 'competent person scheme', such as NICEIC (you can search for registered electricians at www.niceic.com). ey can self-certify that their work complies with building regulations (Part P covers electrical work and applies in England and Wales). If your electrician doesn't belong to a competent person scheme and the work they've done must comply with building regulations, you'll have to pay a building control officer from the council to inspect it. In Scotland, the process is slightly different. You apply for a building warrant from your local council to do building work

54

SEPTEMBER2012

and any electrical work done under the warrant must be checked by the council or an 'approved certifier' (a registered installer). If you're unsure about the rules and regulations that apply to your part of the country, ask the council. You may want to draw up a contract with your chosen electrician, especially for big jobs. is should cover things like the work they'll be doing, the price they've agreed to do it for and how long it should take, so you have some form of redress if things go wrong. While you may need to pay the electrician upfront for materials (check the receipts), it's not advisable to pay them upfront for labour. If they want payment before the job's finished, the best option is to pay them in instalments when they meet agreed targets, so you're not paying them for work they haven't done. When they've finished, ask them for a certificate to prove that the work is safe and legal (building control can also issue this), which you may need when you sell your home. You shouldn't need planning permission to do electrical work, but you may have to apply for listed building consent from your local council if your home's listed. And if it's leasehold, you may need the permission of the freeholder, depending on the terms of the lease. PRODUCT OF THE MONTH Mixing your own paint colours is a great way to create a unique look, use up leftover paint or get the perfect colour if you can't find it in the shops. But using a paint stirrer is time-consuming and hard work, plus it's easy to leave unmixed paint at the bottom of the tin. Instead, use the Titan Power Paint Mixer (£2.99, Screwfix, www.screwfix.com) drill attachment, a very useful and inexpensive addition to your toolbox. You simply pour the paint into a big tub, attach the Titan to your drill, turn it on and mix away - the paint's mixed in minutes and with a lot less arm ache than with a stirrer. HOW-TO TIP Mould and mildew on walls and ceilings is unsightly and unhealthy, but it's common in kitchens, bathrooms and around windows that suffer from condensation. If it's a problem in your home, scrub the area with a specialist cleaning product (try Polycell 3 In 1 Mould Killer, £6.98 for 500ml, B&Q) to get the worst of it off, then use a specialist paint to cover any marks that remain. Ronseal Anti Mould Paint in White (from £18.98 for 750ml, B&Q) works really well and unlike a lot of specialist paints, it's water based, so it's nice to use and dries quickly. As well as covering mould marks, it prevents regrowth for up to six years and is ideal for kitchens and bathrooms because it's moisture and steam resistant ■

HOUSE GARDEN

I

have often said that we should emulate the prudent wealthy people of Tudor times who invested their money in tangible things like land, property, decorative arts and items of intrinsic value such as gold and silver. e production of artefacts made of the latter was, by the middle of the 16th century, strictly controlled and as proof of this the Goldsmiths’ Company had instituted a system of marking all items so made which revealed with individual stamps on the surface the quality of the material, the identity of the maker, the place where it was tested and the officer in charge of the testing. As it was an annual office this mark changed each year and, taking its form as a letter of the alphabet, became known as the Letter of the Year Mark or more recently simply the ‘Date Letter’. Originally it was called the Assay Mark - from the French word assai meaning examination - introduced under a statute of 1478 wherein the Goldsmiths’ Company was made liable to a fine if it marked any substandard silver. (A point here is that in this context the term goldsmith applies to silversmiths as well.) In 1545 the fourth mark was added, depicting a lion walking to the left with its right paw raised and known as the Lion Passant. It became known as the Sterling Mark as it took the place of the earlier King’s Mark to denote quality while the latter became recognised as the mark of the London Goldsmiths’ Company and Assay Office. e reason for the change was two-fold. Firstly by the mid 1500’s the coinage had become debased by approximately 50% which meant that a silver crown (5 shillings) had only half a crown’s worth of silver content. To prove the maintained sterling value and quality of wrought plate, that is items made of silver, the Lion Passant mark was introduced. Secondly, by this time and starting as early as 1378, Assay Offices had been established in various parts of the country, particularly at York, Newcastle, Lincoln, Norwich, Bristol, Salisbury and Coventry. While it was imperative that all

56

SEPTEMBER2012

John Bly

silver should be guaranteed to be of the sterling standard and marked as such it was impractical to expect silversmiths from these disparate places to travel to London to have their wares marked and so each adopted a different emblem to equate with the Leopard’s Head of London. All these towns and cities used a letter of the alphabet to identify the Assay Master but they did not all use the same sequence of letters. London used the first twenty letters in the alphabet excluding ‘J’ and when the run was exhausted the typeface or the shape of the background ‘shield’ was changed. In 1560 Queen Elizabeth I restored the value of the coin, a move which set Britain on a steady course to recovery for the best part of 100 years only to be decimated by our civil war (1642 – 1649.) Among the results of this were vast amounts of earlier wrought plate being melted down to pay for it, which in turn caused a shortage of silver for manufacture. Over time this affected the monetary supply to such an extent that by the 1690’s further legislation was necessary. Until the reign of Charles II all our coinage was made by hand, stamped by hammer and die and the edges trimmed with shears. Although trade was often conducted through barter or credit, cash transactions were

common enough and so, before parting with your coins it was only human nature to snip a little bit of the edge of each one. ese little snippets all mounted up - the original ‘every little counts’ – but it had already become a capital offence to clip coins and, with a fake die, forge your own money. However with an increased demand from working silversmiths these scraps could command as high a price as the coins they had been cut from, and with less risk of detection of the crime. So a new type of coinage was called for and a mill was set up in the Tower of London and powered by horses to produce perfectly circular coins. As a belt -and-braces measure an inscription or legend was engraved around the outer edge thereby making illegal clipping virtually impossible. But the authorities failed to see the problem with having both old and new currency in circulation at the same time. Obviously people hung on to the new with its full face value money’s worth, while spending and clipping - the old. Clearly the old coinage had to be withdrawn and the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of May 1697 were the final days for collection at the ten furnaces specially built behind the Treasury, which was then at Whitehall between the Banqueting House and the river. For weeks great piles of coins, mostly half face value and barely recognisable had been collected, melted down and cast into ingots. In one instance some £52,000 of face value coins were melted to produce just over half that amount of silver worth. But distribution of the new coins was slow and while all this was going on another factor became evident; the value of coin clippings to silversmiths had to betaken out of the equation. is was done by raising the silver content of wrought plate to a level above that of coin. Not by so much as to make the material too soft for use and durability but sufficient to be detected by the assay. e figures were a raise from 92.5% pure to 95.84% pure. It was known at first as the New Sterling Standard but – as it

was denoted by a stamp showing the figure of Britannia – it soon became known as the Britannia Standard. is mark replaced the Lion Passant mark and in London the Leopard’s Head was replaced by a mark showing a Lion’s Head in profile, facing to the left with a jagged neckline as if torn from its body. Heraldically this is called ‘erased’ and so the Britannia Standard in London is denoted by the Britannia mark and the Lion’s Head Erased. In all other towns and cities the Lion’s Head Erased is used in addition to their town mark. From 1697 until 1720 the Britannia Standard was obligatory but in the latter year the economy in England had recovered sufficiently for the government to restore the old Sterling Standard while retaining the Britannia Standard as an option which it remains to the present day. In the early days of the maker’s mark, people were less literate and initials meant little or nothing to most, so symbols were commonly used. ese might be a miniature image of the shop or tavern sign where the silversmith had his workshop, such as leathern bottle or a swan, a star or crescent moon. By the 17th century we see the first two letters of the surname being used and by the beginning of the 18th century the silversmith’s initials gradually became the norm. From the 1720’s it can be said without question that the manufacture and sale of English silver was the most proficiently run and tightly controlled of all industries, with the welfare and benefit of manufacturer, supplier and purchaser held in equal esteem. e four marks as described filled every requirement and would surely have survived unaided save for a change in taxation in the 1780’s and the Convention Hallmarks introduced in the 1970’s, nearly two hundred years later. When we’ve dealt with them we really will get onto the silver from the Channel Isles, Scotland, Ireland and other desirable categories where the present day equivalent of the prudent Tudor person should still be putting their money ■

THE OLYMPIC RANGE OF INDOOR AND OUTDOOR POOLS FROM ORIGIN. metre building, housing a 5.7 x 2.75 metre pool, and plenty of room for changing and gym equipment. All for £120,000. And for a limited time Origin will accept 10% VAT on that - as an incentive for you to be part of the Olympic race!

The outdoor life - Origin style

F

or over thirty years, Origin has been building cutting edge designer indoor pool houses. Over that time, the sophistication has increased dramatically, to keep ahead of the changing demands of the company's customers. Since the earliest days, sales, planning and progress has always been monitored at director level, and the teams of designers and builders have changed little, giving a consistency which has become Origin's benchmark. As an example, meet the all new Olympic range - proving to be one of Origin's great successes. Several buildings are currently underway, and many more are on the drawing board. e range comprises four main models, e Olympiad, Marathon, Arena, and Challenger. To celebrate 2012 and Great Britain's Olympic moment the Origin team put together these pool house packages, inspired by this most historic of games. With an accent on healthy living the designers built in fitness must-haves, such as a well equipped gym, swim jets and an exciting alfresco feel. In the Challenger alone there is all the equipment necessary to train for a triathlon - so it is well within reach of Origin customers to get in some serious training for Rio in 2016! rough the use of cutting edge technology and the finest new materials Origin has managed to bring in the four new packages at record breaking prices - and have included many of the most exciting advances available to today's swimming pool buyer. Temperature controlled pool and surroundings - of course. An exterior finish engineered timber construction. A wide choice of exterior and interior finishes and colours - so your new Olympic Pool House will match in with the colour, surroundings and fabric of your home. e company has even selected ten big canvas styles to maximise the look of your interior, featuring the sort of imagery that will suit this truly life changing installation. OUTDOOR OLYMPIC TOO… For the past thirty years an important part of Origin's business has become the design and construction of outdoor pools as well as their trademark pool houses. It is hardly surprising, since the company's design and construction teams have made it their business to have a complete understanding of swimming pool technology. Although Origin is recognised primarily as the leading indoor pool house company it would have been a shame if the potential customers who preferred the alfresco freedom of swimming under the sun (or stars) had not been given the opportunity to share the knowhow gleaned from the Origin team’s long established expertise. To further celebrate London 2012 it made sense to develop a range of outdoor pools with the sporting flavour of the Olympic indoor pool range. Origin is introducing these high tech Olympic outdoor installations to complete the picture. Four generous sizes are available - 10 x 4 metres, 10 x 5 metres, 12 x 6 metres and 15 x 6 metres. e packages include a concrete pool chamber, tile patterned pool liner (with an optional mosaic tile), stone copings and pool filtration system. Features include gas, oil or electric pool heating for comfortable swimming outside throughout the year, underwater lighting, bubble cover and roller, and stainless steel steps. An Origin pool is built to be easy to clean, so you can spend more time relaxing, and less with chemicals and a mop. For a further investment it is worth considering one of the many advances in pool covers too. As you may have noticed, Britain’s weather can be unreliable – so the company has developed a deep knowledge of the quickest and easiest ways to protect the water from leaves, and make it safe and secure for younger members of the family. COUNTRY WISE… Barn living is the phrase currently on the lips of the Origin team. ese delightful buildings have a real rural feel, hiding the cutting edge technology of the company's state-of-the-art product. Because they fit so beautifully into the country landscape they are often easier to get through the planning stage, and happily take some of the lovely gentle colours that the designers have to offer. ere is nothing better than swimming in your own garden, outside or under cover. Choosing an Origin design, unique to you, is a reliable and trustworthy way to get exactly the pool you want, from a company with vast experience in this specialist area. Origin's brochures shows a wealth of the company’s finest moments, and are an easy way to understand the different features and strengths of the different models. Ring 01895 823366 or email info@originleisure.com for your brochure pack.

It’s a great introduction to an exciting new way of life… www.originleisure.com ■

DRIVING THE NEW AUDI A3

T

he all new Audi A3 has arrived at Essex Audi Centres throughout the region. is third generation A3 features new engines, new chassis, cutting edge new technology and lower running costs, putting it at the very forefront of the luxury compact sector. Beneath the skin the new A3 has aluminium front wings and bonnet, and a cast aluminium front subframe. Even items such as the centre armrest bracket is made from cast magnesium. Adding up the weight savings from these new lightweight parts does make a very significant improvement to the driving dynamics of the car over its already accomplished predecessor. In fact, on the road the new A3 moves with a nimbleness that is frankly astounding. rough bends the A3 demonstrates agility without a trace of understeer, making it a delight for the enthusiastic driver – even on the softest of the suspension settings.

62

SEPTEMBER2012

Less weight doesn't only help the handling, but it pays significant benefits in performance and economy too. A new A3 in 1.8 TFSi 180bhp petrol format delivers a real punch and will reach 62mph in 7.2 seconds. However, the model most people will buy is the highly efficient 2.0 TDI with 150bhp. With its quiet yet powerful all-new diesel engine, this model variant will rev freely to 5000 rpm and cruise almost silently at motorway speeds. And lets not forget that this model is a real winner with tax-payers thanks to its brilliant 106g/km emission figure. As a final note it is worth mentioning the effect that the new A3’s interior has upon the driving experience. With its top quality materials and near-perfect ergonomics the inside of a new A3 is a very nice place to be, making the driving experience very special indeed. But don’t just take our word for it – test drives are available by appointment with the Essex Audi Sales team. www.Essex-Audi.co.uk ■
