FOODIES FESTIVAL – the UK’s biggest touring celebrity food and music festival series – returns to Essex, serving up a star-studded line-up of celebrity chefs and chart-topping music stars, including Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Five.

Known as Gastro-Glastonbury, Foodies will visit Hylands Park, Chelmsford from 23rd – 25th June. Featuring live cooking demonstrations from top chefs drawn from the ranks of MasterChef, Great British Bake Off and Great British Menu, plus top-rated Michelin-starred and award-winning chefs.

Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW), now in its 12th edition, will return to London in May.

Taking place across the whole of Clerkenwell, a neighbourhood renowned for its high concentration of architects and designers, the annual festival is set to offer its biggest programme yet –featuring more than 600 events and, for the first time, merging with its sister show, Design London.

Claridge’s - the legendary Mayfair hotel - often referred to as the ‘annexe of Buckingham Palace’, will be unveiling a series of special royal moments this May 2023.

Claridge’s Archivist Kate Hudson has searched through the hotel’s distinguished historical archives to unveil some of its most memorable royal moments and treasures. Showcased for all to see in Claridge’s Coronation Archive Windows, this display

will have a particular focus on royal coronations throughout the 200 year life of the hotel.

Global superstar Ellie Goulding is set to thrill fans as the headline music act in a concert performance during the AIG Women’s Open at Walton Heath this August.

For the very first time, live music will feature as part of a new, enhanced fan experience that looks to attract new and diverse audiences to the championship to enjoy women’s golf at the very highest level. BRIT Award winner Ellie Goulding will entertain fans on Saturday 12 August following the close of play.

Ginza St James’s boasts authentic Japanese dining that incorporates contemporary presentation with flair and professionalism, led by General Manager Richard Jayakody. The elegant restaurant features the main 70-seat dining room, as well as three distinctive counters for theatrical interactive dining –Sushi Omakase, Teppanyaki and Robata, each with eight seats. Private dining is also taken very seriously at Ginza St James’s, with three distinct rooms with capacity up to 12.

A Strong Start in Life

Choosing the Right Early Years Setting.

What are the factors to consider when choosing the right Early Years setting for your child? We talk to Mrs Gretchen Copeman, Head of Oaklands School in Loughton and former Head of Early Years and

Deputy Head at Braeside School, about how to find the right setting, and how the Oak-Tree Group goes above and beyond to create the ideal Early Years experience at each school.

There are numerous types of Early Years settings available and, while

most have similar offerings, my advice to parents would be to look at what makes a setting different and stand out from the crowd. Whatever type of Early Years setting you are looking for, there are a few fundamentals that should not be compromised.

A vibrant and varied curriculum

A good Early Years setting will provide a range of activities suitable for each child. Even from a young age, children should be encouraged to try new experiences in a supportive environment that encourages independence.

Activities in the Oak-Tree Group’s Early Years are broad and varied. We aim to encourage children’s social, creative, communication and listening skills, as well as their physical and emotional development. Children learn through play and we also encourage child-led learning. In both Lower Kindergarten and Upper Kindergarten classes, pre-reading, writing and number activities are taught, and the children are helped to discover and investigate through art, craft and environmental activities. Specialist teaching in a number of areas greatly enhances the curriculum, as do extra-curricular clubs and workshops.

A beautiful place to learn

When looking at a nursery or school setting for your child, the premises should play a big role in your decision making. This is where your child is going to be spending the majority of their time, so check whether the setting provides adequate space for children of different ages. All four schools in the Oak-Tree Group make the most of their locations. We take learning outside the classroom and into the local environment for Art, Topic/ Understanding the World, PE and more. Epping Forest is on our doorstep, which we make good use of on a regular basis. All Early Years areas have access to a dedicated outdoor space with age-appropriate activities and equipment.

Ratios, class sizes and flexibility

In nursery and school settings, small class sizes are very beneficial. Key workers talk to children about their learning and progress and we share this frequently with parents and carers. Independent Kindergartens like ours tend to offer smaller class sizes. Uniqueness can be celebrated and the individual needs of each and every pupil are considered. We keep our classes small and normally go beyond the statutory child to staff ratios, with additional staff available to support where required.

The next steps

Before you choose an Early Years setting for your child, you may have already started thinking about their next steps when they reach statutory school

age. Starting in Kindergarten in the Oak-Tree Group will help parents secure a place for their children in Reception and beyond. This saves them from having to go for further assessments and interview processes at age 4. Children move on to the next stage of their educational journey with their friends in an environment they are already familiar with and with staff who have comprehensive handovers from year to year. This is all hugely beneficial.

Tower Bridge will once again provide the stunning backdrop to the finale of this year’s Ford RideLondon-Essex 100, 60 and 30-mile challenge rides on Sunday 28 May.

The Ford RideLondon-Essex 100, 60 and 30 are the three mass participation rides that form part of the world’s greatest festival of cycling, and, for a second year, the routes will start on Victoria Embankment in central London and finish in spectacular fashion at Tower Bridge.

A renewed partnership with Essex County Council means the routes will again enable participants to explore Essex, where sponsor Ford is also headquartered. A wide range of improvements have been put in place for 2023 following feedback and engagement on the 2022 event.

These include:

• improved start process using St James’s Park in central London

• improved local access plans for communities on the route

• increased provision of managed vehicle crossing points on the route

• improved communications with social care providers

• enhanced engagement programme with businesses on the route to help them plan ahead

• working with schools and community groups on the route to develop cycling and active travel initiatives around Ford RideLondon-Essex

At the festival, the County Durham-based artist will bring his distinctive public art – sponsored by 3D design software company, SketchUp – to St John’s Gate of the Order of St John. This site-specific piece, titled Gateway and measuring 6m (height) by 15.5m (length), will feature 27 giant spikes hand-sewn in a striking blue textile. It forms part of Messam’s ongoing art series taking over historic architectural sites – and inviting the public to examine their environment in a new light through its deliberately ambiguous shape and size.

Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW), now in its 12th edition, will return to London in May.

Taking place across the whole of Clerkenwell, a neighbourhood renowned for its high concentration of architects and designers, the annual festival is set to offer its biggest programme yet –featuring more than 600 events and, for the first time, merging with its sister show, Design London.

CDW 2023 sees a total of 12 exhibition venues across Clerkenwell including: Design Fields, Contract, Light, Project, Elements, British Collection, Detail, Platform, Ceramics of Italy, Old Sessions House (the festival hub), and two new additions – Catapult and The Garden.

While these unique venues will present over 300 design brands and emerging talent covering furniture, kitchens and bathrooms, materials and surfaces, textiles, decorative accessories, and lighting, an extensive network of more than 130 local showroom partners will host product launches, workshops and talks over the three days of the festival.

Headlining this year’s CDW Presents programme is a specially commissioned installation by British artist, Steve Messam – who exhibits internationally and is well known for his largescale, inflatable artwork reimagining our everyday surroundings.

In addition to Gateway, visitors will have the opportunity to experience Messam’s artistic treatment of the iconic telephone boxes –sponsored by Budvar. K6, originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott for the coronation of George V in 1935, is one of the most recognised telephone boxes; while K2 – also designed by Scott in 1924 – was the first national telephone box, many of which were initially installed in Clerkenwell. Spread over three locations, the former is located on Cowcross Street, and the latter can be found on Clerkenwell Road as well as outside St James’s Church.

CLARIDGE’S SET TO MARK THE CORONATION OF HIS MAJESTY THE KING

Claridge’s - the legendary Mayfair hotel -often referred to as the ‘annexe of Buckingham Palace’, will be unveiling a series of special royal moments this May 2023.

Claridge’s Archivist Kate Hudson has searched through the hotel’s distinguished historical archives to unveil some of its most memorable royal moments and treasures. Showcased for all to see in Claridge’s Coronation Archive Windows, this display will have a particular focus on royal coronations throughout the 200 year life of the hotel. Mementos include pages from Queen Victoria’s diary, celebratory fans created by the hotel in 1911 for the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary, and Claridge’s menus and cocktail cards created for the coronations of King George VI in 1937 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The showcase will also include treasures that have been collected over the years from a charming figural biscuit tin in the form of the royal state coronation coach.

Claridge’s Coronation Archive Windows will be open to view in the hotel’s lobby throughout May 2023, when the Mayfair hotel will also be proudly flying Union Jack flags across its entrance bringing a sense of pomp and ceremony to Brook Street.

Meanwhile, the hotel’s signature Claridge’s Crest Cake, will have an extra regal touch. The crown in the hotel’s emblem acts as a symbol of status and Claridge’s royal appointment, and so – for the week of the Coronation – will be flourished with gold leaf. Another legendary royal tale was that a few days before a notable royal occasion, when a harassed diplomat telephoned the hotel and asked to speak to the King, the response was “Certainly sir, but which one?”.

Ginza St James’s boasts authentic Japanese dining that incorporates contemporary presentation with flair and professionalism, led by General Manager Richard Jayakody. It has been a lovely month here at Atlantis Travel. The urge to travel is stronger than ever thanks to the easing of so many travel restrictions, and we are back to pre-pandemic business. With families eager to get together and makeup for lost time we have seen a huge increase in multigenerational holiday requests. These have included villas in the Caribbean, cruises around the Mediterranean, holiday resorts in Europe, our best-selling destination Dubai or bucket list destinations to the Antarctic, Galapagos, Costa Rica or Maldives.

Additionally, we have seen an increase in demand for adventure holidays, multi-centre trips and tailormade itineraries. The possibilities are endless. Not only have we had a very busy

month with holiday enquiries, but we have also had a busy month of travelling. We are certainly taking advantage of the more relaxed travel rules and our Karen travelled to Mauritius’ west coast with her family and had a wonderful stay at the Westin Turtle Bay Resort. We also had Katie and Donna embark on a weekend visit to experience Silversea’s brand-new ship in Lisbon the Silver Dawn, Sabrina took her family on the trip of a lifetime to Lapland and Melvyn took advantage of the unusually warm weather in Marbella. Spring/summer FASHION TRENDS

The catwalks are king when it comes to predicting the colours, cuts, fabrics and fashions that will dominate each season.

Looking at the spring/summer 2023 designer collections, there was an eclectic mix, with everything from floaty gowns and silky slips to laidback tailoring and utility-inspired separates.

Bold blues, retro denim and glitzy, party-ready looks offer lots of inspiration for the warmer months – that are not too far away now.

These are the eight most important spring/ summer fashion trends to have on your radar, as we head into the new season…

FULL SKIRTS

London Fashion Week favourites Richard Quinn and S.S. Daley turned up the volume with A-line skirts in luxe floral fabrics, as did Maria Grazia

From full skirts to Noughties denim, get ready for the new season with these key looks. By Katie Wright.

Chiuri at Dior, styling black midi skirts and dresses with sheer stockings.

Midi skirts are fast becoming a transitional fashion favourite for 2023, teamed with ankle or knee boots.

LUXE LINGERIE

The ‘underwear as outerwear’ trend is back in a big way this spring, championed by the likes of Christopher Kane, Victoria Beckham and hotlytipped London-based designer Nensi Dojaka, who all sent nightie-style dresses down the catwalk.

For a more sustainable take on the trend, opt for a vintage lace-edged slip.

Take a styling tip from the Christopher Kane runway and wear it with a pastel-hued cardigan.

UTILITY

Major fashion houses including Fendi, Balmain, Dior and Versace declared cargo pants a SS23 must-have – albeit soft, slinky trousers in pretty colours, rather than the starchy, beige kind.

Alternatively, why not try a cargo skirt or dress? Multi-pocket minis were seen at Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton and Coach.

SHEER

One of the biggest trends of the season, sheer fabrics were seen everywhere from Erdem, Victoria Beckham and Nensi Dojaka in London, to Prada, Fendi and Bottega Veneta in Milan.

Focusing mainly on eveningwear, diaphanous gowns and floaty cocktail frocks left little to the imagination, while sheer overlays gave clingy dresses an angelic aura.

UNDERSTATED TAILORING

What’s the opposite of a power suit? London Fashion Week designers answered that question with slouchy, oversized tailoring seen at Eudon Choi, Rejina Pyo and Eftychia.

Muted tones like slate, mushroom grey, mint and jade are versatile and ideal for the office.

BOLD BLUES

Finally, a rival to the ubiquitous pink that has ruled the runways (and the red carpet) in recent seasons – blue is back for SS23.

We’re talking statement shades like cobalt, royal and electric blue, used to great effect at Richard Quinn, David Koma and Alexander McQueen.

SILVER

Silver takes first place this season, thanks to the glitzy gowns at Dolce & Gabbana, Gucci and Jason Wu.

For a less formal take on the trend, try a silver maxi skirt teamed with a white vest as per the Michael

Kors catwalk, or the ‘jeans and a nice top’ look a la Nensi Dojaka.

NOUGHTIES DENIM

Love them or loathe them, low-rise jeans are here to stay, as decreed by designers at Givenchy, Ganni and Alexander McQueen. Another Noughties throwback, the denim maxi skirt, was seen on the catwalks at Burberry, Altuzarra and Masha Popova, and has already been adopted by many a street style star.

At a very young age I wondered what my purpose in this life was. I worked various jobs, which I would start with excitement, but as soon as I had mastered them, I would start seeking a new challenge. I craved constant learning and growth and wanted to push myself forward. I could not agree more with the quotes – ‘Never tolerate average’ or ‘Impossible is a state of mind’. I started my career in the construction industry 22 years ago, right at the bottom, as a bricklayer’s labourer and worked my way up. Within five years, I was put in charge of a small crew. The following 12 years took a lot of hard work, courage and effort and were very challenging but successful. From a site supervisor, I became a project director picking up a BA (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering, NVQ Level 7 in Construction Management, Membership of a Chartered Institute of Building and other qualifications.

My main and most enjoyable projects were marketing suites and show apartments for such industry giants as St George and Berkeley Homes.

As these projects were the developer’s flagships and showpieces for the quality of design and workmanship, they had to be completed to an immaculate level, and that is what I enjoyed most! After doing this for almost seven years, I had a huge hunger for a new challenge. I had tons of experience, knowledge, determination, and a massive will to create something unique. This is where Blackberry Build was born. It went through the stages and evolved into a unique project delivery company like no other. Now I’m glad to say that I’m thrilled with what I do as my ‘work’. It’s crazy; I like it so much I don’t even call it a ‘job’. I just enjoy it too much.”
