An ‘Oak-Tree education’ has become a desirable choice for many families across Essex and North East London.
The Oak-Tree Group, comprised of Braeside, Coopersale Hall, Normanhurst and Oaklands all in the Epping Forest area, are known for their small, nurturing environments, outstanding education, personalised service, dedicated teachers and extensive facilities.
At this time of year, the focus is very much on those looking to sit the 11+ exam for entry into Year 7 at the Group’s two all-through schools.
We talk to Claire Osborn, Group Education Principal, about the schools’ strengths in teaching pupils from Kindergarten all the way up to Year 11, and the journey through 11+ exams.
Why are places in the Seniors at the Oak-Tree Group in such high demand?
There are many reasons why local families, and those further afield, are choosing an Oak-Tree education. For a start, we offer a wide range of subjects with a varied and challenging curriculum. The schools benefit from specialist teachers and specialist facilities, including Science labs, ICT suites, Art/Design Technology studios and Music studios.
The schools also have a reputation for having excellent success rates at GCSE. At Braeside in 2022, nearly all of the outgoing Year 11 students achieved 100% passes. At Normanhurst, the school celebrated an excellent set of GCSE results with 98% of grades at grade 4-9. Several part-scholarships are awarded annually for pupils entering Year 7 in areas such as Academic, Art, Drama, Music and Sport.
There is a culture of happiness across the schools
in the Group, with successful strategies in place for wellbeing and support. Happy, active, engaged children learn better, and they are encouraged to find what makes them happy and fulfilled alongside their academic studies. Beyond our extensive academic programme, we also provide an enriching range of clubs and activities, with opportunities to learn outside of the classroom.
What are the benefits of ‘all-through’ education?
The ‘all-through’ model is proving to be very popular. It is unusual to find a small local school that takes children from 2½ up to GCSE level at age 16 in an academic, nurturing environment. They provide the opportunity for continuity of education with smaller class sizes and more personalised learning programmes tailor-made to the pupil’s individual needs. Although many pupils transition from Year 6 to Year 7 internally, there are also a number of places available for external pupils to join these vibrant schools and become a part of the school community.
What happens at 11+ for external pupils hoping to join Braeside and Normanhurst?
Although many of our Year 7 pupils move up from the juniors, many also come from local independent or state schools. There are joint entrance exams in January and March, and each pupil is interviewed before places are offered. The induction process is smooth and our existing Year 7 pupils are friendly and accommodating to help make the transition as seamless and reassuring as possible.
11+ Entrance Exams will be held at Braeside (girls) and Normanhurst on Tuesday 17 January. Sit just one entrance exam to be considered for both of The Oak-Tree Group’s Senior Departments. Contact the schools directly or register for the exam online.

If it’s glamour you want, whether in Soho or in the City, Bob Bob Ricard is the perfect destination. The original Soho restaurant opened nearly 15 years ago, and was designed by David Collins Studio. Sister restaurant – Bob Bob Ricard City – opened nearly three years ago in the Leadenhall Building (aka ‘the cheesegrater’), and it retains all of the hallmark design and culinary features of Soho – including intimate booth dining, the signature French/British menus, and the now iconic ‘Press for Champagne’ button.
The City site has been designed by the flamboyant talent of Shayne Bradley, taking inspiration from the Royal Yacht Britannia and the modern-day super yachts. Every table has a booth, providing a sophisticated and intimate dining environment. There are also three private rooms, each seating up to 18 guests, with the full à la carte menu available for business or private dining.
From Caviar to Chicken Kyiv and Beef Wellington, the menus focus on luxury comfort food fit for any occasion. The intriguing range of signature French and English classic dishes reinvented with the finest ingredients also have a slight nod to eastern Europe. Other menu highlights include Chicken and Champagne pie; Lobster, crab and shrimp pelmeni; Truffle macaroni cheese; Châteaubriand; Salmon en croute with Champagne sauce; Steak tartare; Flaming crème brûlée flambéed at the table; and Tarte Tatin served with Calvados ice cream and caramel sauce.
Bob Bob Ricard City is open Tuesday-Saturday Noon-Midnight. (The restaurant will be closed from 25 December 2022 - 16 January 2023 inclusive) The Leadenhall Building, Level 3, 122 Leadenhall Street, London EC3V 4AB.

Luxe-for-less means that Champagne and wines are presented at remarkably reasonable prices. A decade ago, Bob Bob Ricard’s owner made the bold and customer-friendly initiative to cap mark-ups on fine wines at just £50, resulting in some of the best ‘bargains’ in the capital. Bob Bob Ricard is also the only restaurant endorsed by Château d’Yquem to serve their wine by the glass, and is responsible for selling 1% of the entire 1998 harvest. Champagne also features prominently at the restaurant, with more than 25 options available by the bottle, and nine by the glass.
Service is another crucial factor to Bob Bob Ricard’s enduring success. The front-of-house team mixes absolute professionalism with a friendly approach to its guests, always mindful that many customers are celebrating important occasions and keen to explore and enjoy the luxury treats on the menu

If you’ve yet to charter a private jet then there is no time like the present; but be warned, after a taste of the high life, you may never want to fly commercial again!
This unparalleled level of luxury and convenience has seen an increase in the number of travellers opting for this elite form of air travel
over commercial flying, going as far as choosing a private jet over the opulence of first class.
Sandbanks Jets however, have taken the experience to new heights as they continue to pave the way with their innovative approach to the industry and attention to detail, which can be encapsulated by their tag line, ‘The Ride of Your Life’.
“Imagine pulling up to the steps of your aircraft only to find that you are ‘Wheels Up’ 15 minutes later”
Imagine pulling up to the steps of your aircraft only to find that you are ‘Wheels Up’ 15 minutes later - This really is the epitome of effortless, luxury travel. From the first point of contact, the team at Sandbanks Jets will ensure your experience is above and beyond everything you would expect from choosing the aircraft to match your specific requirements to providing sumptous food and beverage options, you really do have the choice to travel the way you desire.
In a hugely difficult few years for the aviation industry, demand continues at record levels for private jet charter, with a substantial spike in enquiries. This is understandable when you consider the demand created post pandemic, and a new generation of social media savvy travellers. Private jets can often travel to destinations where scheduled airlines cannot go, depart at your
convenience, and you can enjoy the privacy of your very own aircraft without even setting foot inside a busy terminal.
Sandbanks Jets have carefully chosen a select group of partners with the intention of enhancing the customer experience, including teaming up with one of the most prestigious stores in the world, Harrods, to provide their onboard retailing. They have also been welcomed into ‘The Sunseeker Family’ by the prestigious Sunseeker London Group enabling them to work closely with mutual clients to offer luxury yacht charter and transfer opportunities. The all female team are not content at stopping there, as their ability to recognise what could exceed the client expectations now leads them to offer an exciting and delicious onboard catering experience that will be developed with Rick Stein Restaurants.
The four Directors founded the company after a decidedly average experience booking a private jet. They felt the casual approach they received did not justify the product being sold, and there was room in the market for improvement, attention to detail and innovation. The four friends Laura Green, Amanda McGivney, Lucy Redknapp and Alex Fellows all local to Sandbanks, set about creating the brand, Sandbanks Jets in 2020. Despite the uncertain times due to Covid-19 restrictions, Sandbanks Jets has seen exponential growth in the past 12 months and there are no signs of this slowing down.

Shah-Desai also recommends combining niacinamide and vitamin C.
She describes both as “powerful” antioxidants, saying vitamin C can have “a whitening effect on pigmentation and dark spots”, while niacinamide “enhances the prevention of pigmentation, [and] improves the whitening effect on brown spots”.
Dr Sabrina™ Perfect 360 Eye Illuminate, £90
The world of skincare is a crowded one, and it can be difficult to know what ingredients will give you the best results.
If you really want your skincare routine to work hard, it’s all about choosing the right combinations. “Combining ingredients means you can simultaneously treat and protect at the same time. This in turn can increase the effectiveness, which will then deliver greater and faster results,” explains aesthetic oculoplastic surgeon Dr Sabrina Shah-Desai (drsabrina.co.uk).
“Combining ingredients increases the effectiveness of the ingredient – certain ingredients work very well together, which gives enhanced results.”
Whether you layer individual ingredients or choose an all-in-one is up to you. However, ShahDesai urges you to make sure “the formulations are compatible and do not negate each other or irritate or aggravate skin”.
Plus, pre-formulated products have a few extra benefits. “Some people prefer products that have combined ingredients as they are easier to incorporate in a regime, do not negate each other and are sustainably packaged,” she adds. “Remember that using too many products can actually damage the moisture barrier and or cause other skin conditions (such as inflammation, redness and blemishes).”
If you’re looking to boost the effectiveness of your skincare routine, these ingredient combinations are a match made in heaven…
“Both of these ingredients have anti-ageing and anti-acne effects,” says Shah-Desai. GP and aesthetician Dr Ahmed El Muntasar (theaestheticsdoctor. com) also loves this combination.
“The salicylic acid, which is a chemical exfoliant, helps to get rid of any spots (whiteheads, blackheads) and gets rid of the top epidermis,” he says. “Then the niacinamide comes in and hydrates and nourishes the skin underneath, so it doesn’t get irritated.”
e.l.f. SKIN Blemish Breakthrough Triple-Acid Resurfacing Serum, £14; Skin Proud Rise and Defend Kombucha Face Wash, £12.95
If you’ve got products with vitamin C and E but you’re not layering them up, you could be missing a trick.
“When combined together, vitamin C and E enhance the effects of each other and give fantastic results,” explains Shah-Desai.
“When applied topically, vitamin C is a powerful skin booster. It improves the appearance of your skin by reducing fine lines and wrinkles, repairs damage done by UV rays, stabilises collagen and gives dull skin a luminous glow. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that has anti-inflammatory
properties, and combats free radical damage by preventing oxidative damage to cells.”
Wild Science Lab Juice Boost Brightening Serum, £38; Cetaphil Rich Night Cream, £5.32 (was £7.99), Superdrug
Retinol is a powerful ingredient beloved by beauty buffs for reducing the appearance of fine lines, but it also comes with its issues – namely, the dreaded ‘retinol uglies’, when your skin reacts negatively to the product. Potential side effects of retinol include “redness, irritation and dry skin”, says Shah-Desai.
That’s why she likes layering hers with hyaluronic acid, saying it “helps to lessen the potential side effects of retinol… Hyaluronic acid is renowned for its ability to hydrate the skin, it
helps the skin hold onto water, which hydrates the outer layers of the skin.”
To combat the potential side effects of retinol, Muntsara recommends applying a peptide on top. “Retinoids help shed off the top dead layer of the skin, and then what the peptide will do is repair the skin underneath, helping to maintain a nice, healthy skin barrier,” he says.
Dr. Brandt Triple Active Retinol Overnight Renewal Cream, £59; Lacura Multi-Peptide Moisturiser, £6.99, Aldi; Q+A Hyaluronic Acid Facial Serum, £6.50, Sephora
“Retinoids help shed off the top dead layer of the skin, and then what the peptide will do is repair the skin underneath”
Applying vitamin C before SPF in the morning is a genius idea, according to Shah-Desai, as it “will help protect the skin from UV damage and free radical damage.
“Vitamin C helps to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, slows down skin ageing and reduces the appearance of brown spots.” The order is important here – make sure you apply vitamin C first, “to get the best benefits of these products combined”, she says. Muntasar is also a fan of this combination, saying: “Vitamin C gives you that daytime brightness and antioxidants for a nice glow, then the SPF on top of it protects your skin. There is some research that potentially shows that a good quality vitamin C oil might make your SPF work even better.”

Ear infections can be due to infection of the ear canal, commonly known as swimmer’s ear or due to infection of the middle ear.
What could be reasons for middle ear infections?
Middle ear infections could be due to hole in the ear drum. This could lead to water getting in and infecting middle ear lining. Another reason for middle ear infection could be cholesteatoma.
What is a cholesteatoma?
Cholesteatoma is an infection of the ear in which dead skin cells can grow and expand in the middle ear. As cholesteatoma is an expanding cyst, it can grow and damage hearing, facial nerve and/ or balance.
What are treatment options for hole in the ear drum?
It essentially depends on the symptoms of the patient and how it is affecting quality of life. If the hole is dry and does not have associated hearing loss it can be left alone. If you have associated hearing loss, ear surgery in order to repair the hearing or a hearing aid can help.
How is cholesteatoma treated?
Unfortunately, there is no medicine for cholesteatoma. The only treatment possible is delicately dissecting out cholesteatoma from the ear, sometimes with the use of Lasers and preserving the hearing.
Are there any advancement in ear surgery?
The good news is that with the advancement of endoscopic ear surgery, patients can have ear surgery in less painful and minimally invasive way, without external scars.
Mr Gaurav Kumar
Consultant Ear Nose Throat Surgeon entsurgeonclinic.co.uk
What is your experience of endoscopic ear surgery?
I feel pride in telling my patients that I have been performing ear surgery for the last 22 years. I have operated on more than 1000 ear cases and till date I have not had any facial weakness in my hands which is a known complication of ear surgery. After including endoscopic ear surgery and Laser in my practice I am able to perform complex ear cases with a good outcome.

In a career that’s spanned five decades, Demi Moore has delivered some powerful acting performances and become a style icon thanks to memorable fashion moments both on and off-screen.
The actor – who celebrates her 60th birthday on November 11 –signed to Elite Models as a teen, before taking acting classes and landing her first movie role at the age of just 19.
She went on to become one of half of the Nineties’ most famous Hollywood power couple, alongside husband Bruce Willis (the pair later divorced), and has had her fair share of movie hits and misses.
Here are some of Moore’s most iconic fashion and beauty moments from over the years…
In the 1985 movie St Elmo’s Fire, Moore played the party girl in a group of recent university graduates –complete with Eighties-style dresses, oodles of jewellery and voluminous, crimped hair. While not well received by critics, the coming-of-age drama – which also starred Rob Lowe and Emilio Estevez – was a big box office success.
Five years later, Moore landed a role in one of the biggest tearjerker films of all time, starring opposite Patrick Swayze in Ghost.
Playing artist Molly Jensen, Moore’s wardrobe consisted of boyish vests, shirts and dungarees, while her formerly long locks were chopped into a super-short crop – a look which daughter Tallulah used as inspiration for her own hair nearly 30 years later.
Wearing nothing but diamond jewellery, the seven months pregnant star was shot for the cover of Vanity Fair in 1991 by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz with the headline ‘More Demi Moore’.
Taken at the height of Moore’s fame, the controversial photo was widely parodied and discussed in the media, with some claiming it objectified the actor, while others seeing it as an empowering image.
In 1997, Moore embarked on a gruelling training regime to play the first woman to undergo Navy SEAL training in Ridley Scott’s G.I. Jane.
Bulking up for the role, Moore even shaved her long hair into a buzzcut on camera.
Courting controversy again in 1996, Moore became the highestpaid film actress in Hollywood when she starred as an FBI secretary-turned-exotic dancer in black comedy Striptease.
Donning a series of skimpy outfits – including feathered lingerie and a sparkly string bikini – Moore was praised for her raunchy dance performances, but the film was panned by critics.
“Moore became the highest-paid film actress in Hollywood when she starred as an FBI secretaryturned-exotic dancer in black comedy Striptease”
Moore made a return to the big screen in 2003 with Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle.
Appearing opposite Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu in the action sequel, Moore memorably emerged from the sea in a tiny black bikini.
Not long before the release of her bestselling memoir Inside Out, Moore surprised royal watchers in 2018 by attending the wedding of Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank.
Moore – who is said to be a close friend of Eugenie’s mother, Sarah Ferguson – looked elegant in a maroon Stella McCartney dress with matching fascinator, heels and a pouch bag by Gabriella Hearst.
Unique formula that creates a physical barrier proven to block COVID-19, colds and flu before they start. On-sale now.
Essex based BioSure Global develops, manufactures and distributes worldclass medical devices, and the team’s latest product could stop us being ill this Winter.
As the team behind the first CE marked HIV self-test back in 2015, BioSure has unique expertise in self-testing, and during the pandemic they developed and launched the first approved at home COVID-19 antibody self-test, which showed your body’s level of immunity. Customers were so eager to know if they were protected, that the company have expanded their product range to now include the brand new BioSURE PRO Protective Nasal Spray.
BioSURE PRO Protective Nasal Spray is proven, safe and effective for 6-hours per use. Its unique action creates a barrier in the nasopharynx that blocks the attachment of airborne viruses to prevent infections caused by rotavirus A (sickness and diarrhoea) RSV (common colds), influenzas (flu) and coronaviruses including COVID-19, before they even start.
CEO Brigette Bard confirms: “Nobody wants to miss out and be ill after the past few years –particularly not being well enough to see family and friends this Festive season. We have always been passionate about giving people products so they can feel
in control and we are looking at a behavioural change with people taking action before they catch an infection rather than reacting when they have symptoms. Prevention is always better than cure”
Suitable for daily use, for all aged 12 and over, BioSURE PRO costs just £14.95 effective for 6 hours per application and can be reapplied every 6 hours for continuous protection. With 400 sprays per bottle, it means there is 3 months supply if used daily, which equates to under 2.5p/hour of protection. It’s available nationally online at bebiosure.com, on Amazon and from 760 Well Pharmacies up and down the UK.
BioSURE PRO is not a medicine, is drug-free and uses natural and food safe ingredients which means it is safe for prolonged daily use, with no side effects or risk of long term dependencies.
Brigette Bard confirms this is a game changer in keeping the country moving as we move into the winter virus season and are all feeling the pinch of the economic crisis: “All businesses and families are watching every penny and nobody can afford to lose time or money. Having a team member out, or losing income because of illness can really have an impact, so anything we can do to prevent that is essential”
Independently tested against most common flus, colds and COVID-19 delta and omicron variants BioSURE PRO prevented viral replication in cells treated with the spray vs a control group of untreated cells. Four times more subjects remained infection-free after a 6-day study period with testing against Delta variant
If the viruses can’t connect, they can’t infect! So just spray, protect and go! Find out more and get protected: bebiosure.com

As a young yet highly experienced firm, Blackberry Build is built on a foundation of outstanding artistry, unparalleled design skills and an ongoing commitment to premium quality.
At a very young age I wondered what my purpose in this life was. I worked various jobs, which I would start with excitement, but as soon as I had mastered them, I would start seeking a new challenge. I craved constant learning and growth and wanted to push myself forward. I could not agree more with the quotes – ‘Never tolerate average’ or ‘Impossible is a state of mind’. I started my career in the construction industry 22 years ago, right at the bottom, as a bricklayer’s labourer and worked my way up. Within five years, I was put in charge of a small crew. The following 12 years took a lot of hard work, courage and effort and were very challenging but successful. From a site supervisor, I became a project director picking up a BA (Hons) degree in Civil Engineering, NVQ Level 7 in Construction Management, Membership of a Chartered Institute of Building and other qualifications.
My main and most enjoyable projects were marketing suites and show apartments for such industry giants as St George and Berkeley Homes.
As these projects were the developer’s flagships and showpieces for the quality of design and workmanship, they had to be completed to an immaculate level, and that is what I enjoyed most! After doing this for almost seven years, I had a huge hunger for a new challenge. I had tons of experience, knowledge, determination, and a massive will to create something unique. This is where Blackberry Build was born. It went through the stages and evolved into a unique project delivery company like no other. Now I’m glad to say that I’m thrilled with what I do as my ‘work’. It’s crazy; I like it so much I don’t even call it a ‘job’. I just enjoy it too much.”
Richie says, “Blackberry Build implements everything I have learned
over the past 22 years in the industry and mostly the knowledge gained working with absolute industry leaders in the prime locations in London. Our company’s blueprint is based on military precision in programming and delivering projects, exceptional finish quality and the best possible customer experience. Not a single project takes off without an accurate programme of works. To lead Blackberry Build projects from the initial client meeting to the perfect completion and professional clean, we have a team of highly skilled, trained and experienced industry professionals – our project managers.
Every task on Blackberry Build projects is carried out by a master of the trade, seeking the highest possible outcome, and average is just not something we would tolerate. At Blackberry Build we execute the best customer experience possible, where our clients have complete peace of mind, full reports, confirmed dates, certification and guarantees. We
also have an excellent track record of delivering projects on time and budget and every review we have received is to the highest 5 stars.
Blackberry Build is a place where a client comes with an idea and leaves with a perfect house, which they will enjoy for many years to come. Most of the projects completed by Blackberry Build are getting valued well above the market value, due to the supreme quality achieved and the architectural solutions implemented. Our unique approach and customer experience is constantly praised among our clients.
Whether you plan to build a new home from scratch or renovate an existing property, the skills, experience, and knowledge of the Blackberry Build team allow you to transform your vision into a reality. We recognise that every project is unique, as is every client, which means that we spend time understanding your requirements, budget, and timeframes, in order to tailor our expertise to the demands of your individual project. From here, we can then piece together a detailed plan of action, which will be overseen at every stage by skilled project managers. This ensures that all works, regardless of their scale or complexity, are delivered on time and to the highest standards.

As autumn gets into full swing, the colours we’re pulled towards to build ourselves habitats that make us feel safe, cocooned and calm echo what we can see on the outside (in keeping with the vogue for the allnatural), but with a luxe twist.
With the countdown towards winter marching on, everything seems a bit more difficult. Getting used to, again, the darkness, the drizzle and the dropping temperatures. Let your home shoulder some of the wish-it-was-warmer burden and embrace what the season is offering – a palette of exquisitely rich indulgence, which brings glorious visual warmth to even the frostiest of days.
Sometimes it’s hard to really appreciate the beauty of autumn as the reality that summer’s gone sinks in. The glory of changing leaves on trees appreciated only for fleeting moments, curtains drawn across intense night skies, the odd splash
of sunlight rushed past in a hurry to seek shelter. These dark, rustic shades may seem a little glum when glanced at but complied into an interiors scheme the result is utterly sumptuous.
From the spicy paprika, chilli and cinnamon tones speckled across exhibitions at this year’s directional Salone del Mobile furniture fair, to the reds making their way into the spotlight balanced by flashes of deepest blue, green, and golden ochres, these
“These dark, rustic shades may seem a little glum when glanced at but complied into an interiors scheme the result is utterly sumptuous”
colours are the furniture equivalent of a warming mug of chocolate. Rich, luxurious, and just want you need after a wrapped-in-a-scarf walk, cold commute or snow-tipped trip.
Translating these autumnal hues into something you want to invite indoors is all about materials. This season, we’re looking to the 1970s for inspiration as we are (re)teaming autumn’s lush colouring with similarly luscious finishes – think lashings of velvet for upholstery, and high-shine for hard pieces, the overtly decadent feel balanced by the organic, warm tones. In our collection of
designer sofas and modern chairs, the combination of earthy, natural shades and tactile fabrics says two things: dive right in and bring a blanket, while glossy tables, contemporary storage pieces and statement lights nod to alluring retro 70s glam.
As standalone pieces, the burgundy, red and ochre designs make a bold statement. Sensual. Opulent. Hot hot hot. Place them in pairs and larger groups, and soon you’ll forget that such seasonal photogenic beauty comes with a fall in temperatures – you won’t even mind. Upholstered designs wrap around you, ready to share their anti-winter cosiness, while full on gloss reflects light around the room, adding a flash of energy to the space and reminding us it is ok to venture out. But definitely come back in here soon.

Nestled in a leafy village, this plot in a quiet conservation area was the perfect place to build a beautiful, luxurious home.
Designed in collaboration with our client to be an ‘arts and crafts’ style, this elegant house presents an extremely impressive appearance which also blends harmoniously with the style of neighbouring properties. Warm red brick and decorative tile detailing highlight the traditional elements of this style, and a porch entrance with a cream stone archway beneath a central gable, elevate the look. “An elegant home for our client to live, work and entertain in luxurious style”
When the Baker family initially approached Origin, they were interested in covering an existing outdoor pool. The family had been in discussion for some time, deciding whether or not the outdoor pool was worthy of undertaking as a project.
“We originally had an outdoor pool which was here when we bought the house, it was in a completely different position from where the indoor pool is now, away from the house and further away than was desirable. We knew we were going to stay at the house for at least another 10 years so, to us, an indoor pool was worth the investment.”
Once the Baker family had settled on the idea of an indoor swimming pool, they reached back out to Origin and the planning began. “We knew Origin did it all and after seeing some of their excellent recently completed projects, we decided
to go for it. With the original outdoor pool, we found it such a task having to ‘prepare’ it for the summer months and expensive to run as well even though we had taken the necessary precautions with a pool cover etc… With an indoor pool it’s a temperature controlled environment and the pool is protected by the building, making it instantly ready for spontaneous swims and family parties!”
The Baker family had done their research and had a strong idea of what their dream pool house would entail. Keeping in mind the budget the Baker family had put forward, it was Origin’s job to deliver a design that captured every element they wanted. As an active family, they longed for an athome gym. Origin kept this in mind and designed additional multifunctional space, separate from the swimming pool that could be used as a gym or potentially turned into an office in the future.
“Origin was great at keeping in mind the limits we had set and we loved working with a company that took our budget seriously and offered plenty of thoughtful and realistic suggestions throughout the whole process”
“The biggest benefit of the indoor pool is definitely being able to swim all year round. It’s invaluable for us, we use the pool house every day and not just for swimming. Someone is always in the gym or relaxing in the lounge area.” In order to enhance the family’s enjoyment of their garden, Origin centralised the Baker family’s key activities. Origin chose a new area of the garden off to the side of the main house for the pool house, keeping it close enough for connectivity and in a position where you can look out over the garden vista and enjoy the space.
“We loved the idea of an indoor pool as another space for entertaining, we like to have friends and family over for dinner and BBQs in the summer. The pool house works as a social hub, it’s the space everyone congregates around!”

“It was clear from the beginning Origin had earned their credentials as the indoor pool experts, our visits to completed projects confirmed this and made us feel comfortable and confident we were in safe hands. Origin consistently kept us up to date throughout the whole process, we’d have regular meetings to choose finishes which helped us make decisions quickly and move things along smoothly. We were very pleased with the quality of the products offered and the guys that came to work here during the construction process were very knowledgeable and helpful.
Origin excelled at communication throughout this process which is such an important skill for a company to master, especially when you’re entrusting them with a big project like ours. Everyone on site and in the office was approachable, we felt like we could talk to anyone and our questions would be heard. Even when it came to the snagging process, everything was sorted really promptly and to a high standard.”
“Origin know how to create something new in an existing setting and blend all the things you don’t think about like pathways, levels, views, security, and desired routes into the finished article so that it appears like it’s always been there at the end of the project – now that’s impressive”
Are you one of 70% of home owners in the UK incorporating a mineral felt flat roof? Mineral felt generally has a slow breakdown often allowing water ingress to cause unnecessary damage before anything can be visibly detected within the home.
A failing roof & the warning signs- look for signs of cracking around the roof edge, pipes, upstands and roof lights etc. Beware of blisters on the roof surface, during colder months they can become brittle and crack. The home-owner should also be made aware that insurance companies will no longer accept any liability for any external or internal damage caused by a leaking flat roof which is over 10 years old.
Further very important information: - all property owners please be aware when a flat roof is replaced there are Building Regulations that the homeowner and the contractor must comply with. Failure to comply can leave the homeowner open to major problems when selling the property. Please call for free information regarding the regulations.
In 1999, High-Tech Roofing first introduced the most advanced flat roof technology to the homeowner. Protan, based in Norway, has a pedigree in the design and manufacture of water-

If you want to keep your home feeling fresh and up to date then it is a good idea to plan ahead, we spoke to local kitchen design company Urban Myth and asked them what trends they think will be popular in 2023.
Nature inspired spaces are here to stay
The use of natural materials has increased considerably over the last few years, and this is a trend that is set to stay. As well as bringing a welcoming and warm feeling to your space this style is easy to keep clean and as a neutral tone it looks great mixed with any colour.
“The use of natural materials has increased considerably over the last few years, and this is a trend that is set to stay”
Peter Hill, Head designer at Urban Myth told us “Several customers are becoming more adventurous with their kitchen style, especially a scheme that layers up textures with the same colour, like our new showroom display in matt black and gold to create a moody vibe.
“While there will be a rise in and bold colours in 2023, certain spaces still call for a level of calm says Marzena Rodrigues, Senior Designer for Urban Myth, “and this is where pastels come back in, they are surprisingly versatile and can transform a space into something truly special” If you are looking at introducing colour in to your kitchen why not look at finishes and patterns in soothing tones like eucalyptus, mid-level blues, and soft pinks.”
Lighting is an important feature of a kitchen and one that Urban Myth encourages their customers to think about at an early stage, from task lighting to layered lighting, depending on how they want to use the room, there’s a growing interest in creating different moods for different activities.
According to a recent survey on Tiktok, the biggest kitchen trend this year was organisation and Peter agrees “The majority of our customers are looking to increase the storage space in their new kitchen and we have many options for interior organisation that maximise space and easy access to your provisions and kitchen equipment. For example the Flex cabinet solution that delivers full access to your corner cabinets leaving no space unused.

An overall Scandi design with Japanese influences and touches of French weave, Tranquil Nature is both beautifully balanced and effortlessly chic. This modern theme blends soft flowing shapes with a natural colour palette and chalky matt finish for a contemporary look that still feels organic. A raw, earthy colour palette of grounding neutrals, moss greens and charcoal seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor living to create a natural flow from home to garden.
Tranquil Nature features a wide range of Dobbies’ new outdoor furniture, with something to suit a variety of homes and budgets. The Ashton line features a six-seat dining seat and mini modular sofa set in a light neutral tone. New for SS23, Eve includes a stylish folding egg chair, suitable for balconies and small spaces.
An organic blend of calming nature and maximalist style, this Mediterranean sunset inspired theme brings together natural tones of brown and taupe and lifts them with vibrant pops of citrus and claret red for a contemporary feel.
Alps remains one of Dobbies’ top selling ranges, with the popular tan colour way returning for 2023 in modular sofa sets, bistro sets and on-trend hanging egg chairs options. The modern Cintra range is also back for SS23 with both lounge and dining varieties and is complemented perfectly by the all-new Palermo standing egg chair with its sleek wicker design.
A theme that embraces nature and all it has to offer, from the established allotment to the windowsill herb garden, Wild Heritage has gardening at the heart of its design. This allinclusive theme honours ageing materials and weathered beauty, drawing inspiration from the nature that surrounds us. Traditional forest greens, terracotta and light oak tones are highlighted with fig and vanilla for an ageless overall look.
Dobbies has built on the popularity of the
Florence firepit set with a new six seat option for 2023 and has brought back the much-loved Copenhagen and Rio wooden sets that offer fantastic quality for less. The good value Oliver Bistro is new for SS23 and has a modern, relaxed shape that encapsulates the essence of Wild Heritage.
Summer Colour celebrates the beauty and fun of bold colour and blends rich reds, pinks, Verdigris and digital lavender tones together to create a joyful collection that brings outdoor living to life. Bright ombres and vibrant graphical prints make this youthful collection pop, while chunky, playful shapes give it a cool edge.
The Juno bistro set was a hit in 2022 and returns for this year with a new four seat version, while the new colourway in the Nectar collection demonstrates a unique way to make a statement with bold colours in your garden. The new Bologna egg chair is also predicted to be a hit. The collections launch in Dobbies stores across the UK and online from Spring 2023: dobbies.com.

“Getting the right kitchen design for entertaining at Christmas requires forward planning to ensure your layout is perfectly placed. When thinking about key features and small details alike, it’s best to consider how you’d use the space, as this will help to inform your design.
“Remember, a kitchen is for life, not just for Christmas, so it’s important to ensure that the space meets your needs all year round, as well as during the festive season. If you’re a regular host, consider how you may like to use your kitchen for dinner parties and get-togethers throughout the year too.
“An island unit is the perfect location to host welcome drinks and exchange presents, as it offers a hub to display perfectly crafted beverages, along with space for family and friends to mingle while you continue food preparations.
“Don’t have space for an island in your kitchen? Consider incorporating an informal seating feature, such as a seating nook. Building a small bench into the surrounding units can really maximise floorspace and positioning a small table in front can create a truly versatile feature that will prove handy throughout the year. You don’t have to forgo storage either, you can integrate clever solutions beneath the seating and surrounding

zone – a great place to hide presents in the run up to the big day, as well as clutter that you’d prefer visitors didn’t see!
“Regular hosts can also benefit from an integrated bar area or wine cooler. A central location avoids the inconvenience of guests rooting through the main fridge to locate drinks whilst you’re busy cooking or entertaining.
“To guarantee Christmas dinner and other food preparations run smoothly, there are a range of features you can include into your design that will keep things organised and orderly. Internal storage and integrated appliances not only maximise space but keep surfaces clear from clutter too.
“Integrated carousels are excellent for convenience as they allow you to locate different utensils quickly without you having to scramble around at the back of the cupboards. Pan draws are another useful option as they provide the depth needed to store larger items whilst keeping them accessible, even amidst the busy run up to a Christmas gathering. Make the most of every inch of your cupboard space with concealed drawers, pull out wire shelves and storage baskets too.
“Smart appliances are a great option to keep timings on track, as they can be controlled through a smartphone. If you’re busy getting yourself ready or opening presents but need to pre-heat the oven, you can even do so with the click of a button.
“Discreet dishwashers also help keep a kitchen clean and tidy with minimal effort. Even for modest spaces, there are slimline options that provide a great solution.
“If your dining space is in your kitchen, a good cooker hood is an essential to remove smells and grease as you cook, so when you come to sit down for your Christmas dinner, you’re not left with lingering scents.
You can also order a brochure, book a free design consultation, or use Benchmarx’s handy kitchen visualiser tool by visiting: benchmarxkitchens.co.uk
“Innovations such as NEFF’s clear glass downdraft extractor are fantastic for a discreet look, as they don’t obstruct your view – meaning you can continue any conversations whilst tending to the hob.
“I’d also recommend considering whether you’d benefit from a warming drawer. If you’re hosting a large group, warming plates ahead of serving can help keep food hot as you plate up.
“Pendant lighting above your dining table is a great way of adding focused illumination and make that Christmas table layout sparkle. It’s always a good idea to also think about other ambient forms of lighting to set the mood, such as plinth lighting and spotlights, for a sleek, layered look.
“Make serving Boxing Day morning coffees easy by opting for an integrated coffee machine in your kitchen design. Some machines even allow you to enter your guests’ orders on your mobile device, and the machine will even start preparing the drinks – one less thing to worry about!
“As the evening approaches, incorporating wireless speakers around your kitchen will keep guests entertained into the night. Smart technology such as Google Hub can be used to control both music and lighting, so you can easily change the ambience from the convenience of your phone.
